FWADA FALL GALLERY NIGHT 2014 1

FWADA is a unique arts organization in a unique American place. Few cities of Fort Worth’s size are privileged to command such a wealth of major art museums, and fewer still have such a vital community spirit. What truly sets Fort Worth apart, however, is the vigorous, longstanding, clearly defined cooperation between the museums, the university art galleries, the non-profit exhibition spaces, and the art dealers, all of which are full working members of FWADA. To fulfill its stated mission to stimulate interest in the visual arts through educational programs, art scholarships, and art competitions, FWADA organizes, funds, and hosts exhibitions of noteworthy art. It sponsors the Fall Gallery Night for members and friends, as well as Spring Gallery Night.

All these attainments have created a stable environment that produces a steady stream of top-notch talent, including major local artists who exhibit their work nationally and internationally. Newcomers are frequently dazzled by the quality of work being created in every medium and style. Their passion reinvigorates Fort Worth patrons who have become habituated to the riches that surround them, reminding them anew that the most authentic cultural connection they can make is the one that affords direct communication with the artists who interpret and illuminate the life experience they share through common background and interests. Although the city is justly recognized for its cosmopolitan worldview, it is the local artists and their devoted collectors who are the lifeblood of the Fort Worth art market.

The members of the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association are pledged to the maintenance of a high standard of ethical conduct and professional integrity, these businesses furnish a model that gallery associations in other cities might do well to emulate. Historic Fort Worth, Inc. Art Show & Sale at Preservation is the Art of the City (TR), an event of Historic Fort Worth, Inc will be held at the Fort Worth Community Arts Cetner. HFW’s 12th art show and sale features over 50 juryselected, local artists who receive the majority of each artwork sold. Styles and media vary, and many artists participate in a special section called Stories of the City. The 2014 featured artist is Dennis Blagg and honorary chairmen are gallery owners Pam and Bill Campbell, founders of Gallery Night. Proceeds benefit preservation programs at HFW.

Imprinting the West September 6 - October 20 With President Thomas Jefferson’s acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase, and the promotion of Manifest Destiny, Americans in the Eastern part of the country were skeptical about Native American’s ability to acclimate into a more “European” society. Artists were employed by geographical survey teams to accompany them into the Purchase and document the land and the people they encountered.

Images of Native American people and traditions were committed to a permanent canvas and used to illustrate their integration in a lifestyle that was more “organized”, thereby alleviating Easterners’ concerns. Consisting of 48 hand colored engravings and lithographs, Imprinting the West utilizes the work of such renowned artists as Frederic Remington, George Catlin, Albert Bierstadt and John James Audubon to create an appealing picture of the westward expansion to those living in the Eastern part of the country.

After Walker Evans examines the relationship of photography to sculptural objects using the photographs Evans presented in the 1935 MoMA exhibition African Negro Art as a conceptual starting point. The Evans images act as a catalyst for considering how cultural tropes and the notion of an authentic cultural experience is re-imaged, re-contextualized, and re-purposed through hybrid mediums of photography and sculpture.
