Hard to Say Goodbye
METROPOLIS
As young gorilla Gus grows into silverback status, he may present a challenge to father Elmo, meaning one of them may have to go. B Y
Bright sun and bold shadows reach across the rocky terrain of the Fort Worth Zoo’s gorilla habitat as the troop begins their day. The harsh lighting chisels their deep-set, expressive eyes and muscular frames, as if carving the powerful primates to life. The scene seems to echo a growing contrast within the troop’s dynamics — an inevitable change that could be as harsh as it is heartbreaking. Today, however, is just another day. Bright greens and carrots are scattered across the habitat ground for the gorillas’ morning meal. Elmo, the veteran silverback and leader of the zoo’s western lowland troop, sits on his favorite rock slab, calmly surveying his domain. Elmo’s rich brown eyes glint in the sunlight as he slowly turns his massive head from side to side. Nearby, the focus of the troop’s impending shift is already in motion. Gus, a playful, chest-thumping 10-year-old, is revving up for his latest round of mischief-making. He gently bops his little brother Bruno on the head, a move that sends the much smaller gorilla into somersaults of joy. Ever the showman, Gus recruits his close companion, Bukavu, to assist in an epic tag-team game. The two gorillas then circle around Elmo, encouraging the patriarch to play. Underneath the playful antics, a more serious side of Gus is emerging. He’s becoming a silverback, an adult male gorilla. Gus is showing unmistakable signs of becoming a mature adult, said Linda Roberts, supervisor of the World of Primates and a 35-year veteran of the Fort Worth Zoo. He has well-rehearsed the powerful gorilla stance to express when he’s upset. He makes deep, rumbling sounds. Gus also “calls” — a specific vocalization — when he wants you to come back, Roberts said. “All these are things that adult males do,” Roberts said, “so he’s at that real in-between stage.” Gus is changing physically, as well. He’s packing on muscle, and a soft silver-gray outline is becoming noticeable across his back, edging him closer to silverback status.
Elmo, now in his mid-30s, could face a challenge from his son, Gus, as the younger gorilla evolves into silverback status.
These subtle changes carry weight because in the wild, there is room for only one silverback to lead a troop. Gorillas typically live in families with a dominant silverback who supervises and protects several females and their young. The same is true for gorillas in zoos. As Gus continues to grow, he could one day challenge Elmo, the father who has watched over him throughout his life and comforted him when he cried as an infant. Elmo and Gus’ daily routine still includes playing, but even their play is taking on a deeper meaning.

Gus could one day be moved to another facility because he’s becoming a silverback, an adult male gorilla. Just as in the wild, a zoo gorilla troop has room for only one dominant male.
“He and Elmo, they do great,” Roberts said. “They play. They have a good time. You hear them ‘laughing.’ They’re rolling around, and they’re wrestling. But it’s not entirely play. It’s a precursor. It’s testing.” One day, the play might turn a little too rough, Roberts said. And that could spark a standoff or worse, a fight. Elmo, now 36 years old, still barrels around the huge outdoor habitat with stunning power and speed. As the leader of the six-member gorilla troop, the musclebound 400-pound silverback may not easily surrender his throne. “For now, everything’s wonderful, but we’re aware that eventually, one day, it won’t be like that,” Roberts said. As a result, zoo staff are closely watching for signs of a power struggle. Before that happens, Gus may be moved to another facility, with a group of other male gorillas close to his age. The setting is known as a “bachelor group” (of gorillas). Bukavu, who is 7, may join Gus in the move, Roberts said. A bachelor group gives maturing young gorillas the chance to develop skills needed to live with other adult gorillas. Among those skills are creating friendships through play, learning to negotiate power, avoiding conflict, and expressing dominance, said Kristen Lukas, Ph.D., director of conservation and science for Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and chair of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP). “I have 20-plus years of experience studying bachelor group dynamics and leading teams that skillfully form and manage bachelor groups in zoos,” Lukas said. “I can say, without a doubt, that male gorillas in bachelor groups can form long-term bonds with one another and benefit greatly from being managed socially during their formative years.”
Roberts has already seen a tense silverback dynamic before. And so has Elmo. In 1993, Elmo was 3 years old and living with an adult male named Kambula. Like Elmo, Kambula was “a laidback gorilla,” Roberts said. When Elmo was 13 going on 14, he started having standoffs with Kambula. “One day, they were squaring off in that yard,” Roberts recalled. “Neither one would run and turn their back on the other to go inside, and I called a curator that was here at the time. I said to him, ‘So, do we separate them now, or do we wait until we have to stitch somebody up?’ ” Eventually, Kambula refused to go outside if Elmo was present. The zoo said staff decided the two gorillas could no longer be together for safety’s sake. Permanent separations and goodbyes of any kind are difficult for staff, as well as zoo members and visitors who connect with the animals by watching them. Still, changes and losses are inevitable. “It’s heartbreaking,” Roberts said, “and when you come into this business, if you don’t know it before you start, you’ll learn it rather quickly.” One example is Jameela, a baby female gorilla born at the zoo on January 5, 2024. A team of zoo staff and human medical experts performed an emergency cesarean on Sekani, who developed a serious blood pressure condition while carrying the baby gorilla. Sekani did not accept the baby gorilla, named Jameela. Other female troop members also rejected the infant, despite around-the-clock efforts by zoo staff. In March 2024, Jameela was moved to the Cleveland Metropark Zoo, where she was successfully integrated into the western lowland gorilla troop. “We were heartbroken,” Roberts said. “It felt like a failure to us because we couldn’t get our girls to take her, but you can’t make them take the baby.” When Jameela’s move to Cleveland was announced, the community responded to the Fort Worth Zoo’s World of Primates staff with an outpouring of support, cards, and gifts. Hundreds of visitors also came by to see Jameela one last time after the zoo announced her departure. In a different way, Gus’ birth on December 5, 2015, also marked a time of uncertainty. No one knew how Elmo and the rest of the troop at the time would respond. “We were all nervous, because they never saw a baby, and we were wondering what Elmo was going to do,” Roberts said. “But Elmo was beautiful.” He stayed close to Gus’ mom, Gracie, and every time Gus cried, Elmo would make a comforting, rumbling sound, Roberts said. The bond between the gorillas is felt by visitors, too — especially those who show up year after year, camera in hand. “I have been watching Gus since he was 5 days old,” said local photographer Sharon Martin. “He was my first western lowland gorilla baby to photograph. I loved him from that first moment and have loved watching him with all his milestones.” Gus’ interactions with the rest of the troop, continued on page 5

meat, said Bas Huijbregts, the World Wildlife Fund-U.S.’s African species conservation director. The exact number of western lowland gorillas is not known, as their dense rainforest homes make them difficult to count, Huijbregts said. Disease is another threat to their survival. In the early 2000s, Ebola “caused more than a 90% mortality rate, which resulted in the western lowland gorilla becoming a critically endangered species,” Huijbregts said. To help protect them, WWF and its partners have created successful conservation efforts by working with logging companies to protect apes
from poachers, minimize disease transmissions, and improve land-use planning to help protect their habitats, Huijbregts said. Later at the zoo, in an afternoon of sunny, unseasonably warm winter weather, Gus showed perhaps another sign of growing up. Striking a dignified pose, he took a seat on Elmo’s favorite rock slab and watched the rest of the troop. For a moment, Gus looked a little less like a prankster and a lot more like a young silverback. “It’s sad, but you do the best you can while you have them,” Roberts said. “We know we’re not going to keep them forever.” l

especially Winifred (one of the female gorillas), and his joy and fascination with simple things like a stick or a rock have been fun to watch over the years, Martin said. “Watching him grow and become a big brother to Bruno and a buddy and cousin to Bukavu — every moment has been special,” Martin said. “It does make me sad to think someday he’ll leave the zoo, and I won’t see him on my visits.” Aside from the joy the animals bring to others, they play an important role in conservation and education. One goal is to spark an interest for future scientists, veterinarians, animal care specialists, keepers, conservationists, and others, said zoo spokesperson Avery Elander. “It’s building that connection, fostering that appreciation. Through the breeding program with our gorillas or any of the other animals, the zoo also is keeping a genetically diverse, healthy population of animals alive for future generations.” In the wild, western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, based on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). That means the animals face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Populations have plummeted due to commercial hunting for bushmeat, diseases, and habitat loss through logging, farming, and expanding human settlements, says the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Nearly 80% of western lowland gorillas live in unprotected areas, making them vulnerable to poachers, who primarily hunt gorillas for their

For starters, y’all, it’s “Paddy,” not “Patty.” The correct abbreviation for St. Patrick’s Day is “St. Paddy’s Day,” derived from the Irish name Pádraig. “Patty” is short for “Patricia,” or it refers to a burger. Not that a burger sounds bad, but I digress. Now that I’ve learned ya, let’s dig in. Food-wise,

Hours are 11am-midnight Mon-Wed, 11am-2am Thu-Fri, and 10am-midnight Sat-Sun. The Irish Nachos at J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill (400 E Abram St, Arlington, 817-274-8561) are world famous (it’s true), so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, visit anytime you like. Those wanting to party should head there on Tue, Mar 17, from 11am ’til close for J. Gilligan’s 47th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Block Party. Corned beef is not technically an Irish tradition, as it was too expensive for the locals to eat back home. Irish-American immigrants found it affordable in the states, and now it is a thing. Static Wait. Wait. Hold that image. I know what you’re thinking. That’s the young counselor, the lone survivor, alone in a canoe at the end of the movie. That’s Camp Crystal Lake. Kevin Bacon and all the other counselors are dead, but she’s survived. She’s dazed, in shock, but she’s made it. She’s made it. And then … Chh, chh, chh … ah, ah, ahhh. SlashFilm.com says Friday the 13th “remains one of the most shamelessly entertaining slasher franchises of all time,” but the 1980 B-movie original was arguably the best and a nice challenge to John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). If we’re keeping score, Halloween now boasts 13 iterations, Friday the 13th 12, and their illegitimate lovechild, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), nine. But Michael Myers was more discreet, a lone gunman so to shriek. Friday the 13th’s Jason and Elm Street’s Freddy actually faced off (pardon the weird pun) in Freddy vs. Jason (2003). In the end — but not the end of the original Friday the 13th — they all amounted to a lot of dumbness with gratuitous helpings of blood. Which is where we are today.
• the year the Obama administration’s negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program produced a deal.

Friday the Trumpteenth
• when Sandra Bland died in jail after a Texas state trooper arrested her because she argued with him for giving her a traffic ticket for failing to signal a lane change.
• the year the world finally achieved an agreement on addressing climate change.
If this administration has you feeling like the last survivor of Friday the 13th, you’re not alone.
This Friday will mark the second Friday the 13th of the 2026 calendar year, which is interesting but also scary, especially since the last time a calendar year featured two Friday the 13ths in a row was 2015. To wit, 2015 was: • the first year since the middle class developed that the majority of America was no longer part of it.
• the first year that gun deaths became as common as traffic deaths in the United States. • the year that more Mexican immigrants were leaving the United States than entering it.
• the year when white supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed nine members of Charleston’s historic Emanuel AME Church (including a senior pastor and a state senator) during a Bible study session because he couldn’t get laid. (A girl he was interested in fell for a Black guy.)
• the year Donald J. Trump formally announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential election at a campaign rally and speech after descending a golden escalator in the Big Apple’s Trump Tower.
By the end of Trump’s first presidency, rational, sane Americans resembled the lone survivor unmoored on Camp Crystal Lake — shocked, appalled, and dazed — but they made it. Trump had further gutted the American middle class, was closer to aiding and abetting gun violence than eliminating it, reversed several environmental regulations, withdrew from the aforementioned climate change accord, and implemented an inhumane family-separation policy for migrants, even though more were leaving than arriving. He also appointed three conservative barf bags to the U.S. Supreme Court, and, when his reelection bid turfed in 2020, his batshit supporters perpetrated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The sane U.S. citizenry survived it — but only just. Trump’s most underrated achievement was actually helming the first presidency since Herbert Hoover when a sitting president was
defeated and his party lost its majorities in both chambers of Congress. Biden wasn’t great, but at least he managed to avoid being an international disgrace with pedophile files in his closet. Today, as the second of three Friday the 13ths of 2026 approaches, our politics are a sad sequel of MAGA asininity, and Trump has doubled down on dumb and bloody. Plus, a large contingent of the ignorant cretins who voted for him is suddenly acting as surprised as any of the stupid characters who served themselves up on platters for Jason, Freddy, or Michael in all their ridiculous sequels. MEMO TO TRUMP VOTERS: You didn’t cast ballots for nuanced drama, heady action, clever comedy, or an inspiring adventure narrative. You bought tickets for naked greed and shameless perfidy, a cast of bad actors and a budget devoid of meaning, conscience, and integrity. You wanted torture porn — and you got it. Enjoy the climax. It won’t be redacted. — E.R. Bills

The Trauma Ray Carnival is “a for-locals-by-locals kind of event,” said Magnolia Skate Shop owner Bobby Wilson, who raised about $80,000 in 2022 to help with the construction of the Near Southside’s first and only skate plaza.

the 2024 LP Chameleon and a number of earlier recordings dating back to Trauma Ray’s formation in 2018. Recorded by Mario Cernadas and mixed and mastered by Corey Coffman, Carnival was released in February by Dais Records, the independent New York/Los Angeles label that also put out Chameleon. Carnival is as heavy and hypnotic as everything else the band’s done, but it has a creepy, nightmarish, funhouse vibe that shows there’s more to Avila and company than traditional cosmic nodding. “At first,” said Perez in a press release, “I thought [Carnival] was gonna be really bad and rushed, and now I feel like it might be my favorite thing we’ve ever done.” Carnival, Avila added, is “the most collaborative we’ve been, where everyone was both handson and hands-off. You can really hear each person’s influences in almost every song in a very unique, non-biting way.” l The Trauma Ray Carnival presented by Magnolia Skate Shop Noon Sat w/Trauma Ray, Empty Shell Casing, Ozone, Defcon 1, and Spurred at Fire Station Park Skate Plaza, 1616 Hemphill St, Fort Worth. And there will be skaters. Magnolia Skate Shop owner Bobby Wilson raised about $80,000 in 2022 to help with the construction of the neighborhood’s first and only skate plaza, the site of numerous other events, most notably low-rider get-togethers. The Trauma Ray Carnival, he said, is “a for-locals-by-locals kind of event, just trying to do something sick for our Fort Worth community.” From playing the shop’s grand opening eight years ago, Trauma Ray are now almost always on tour between writing and recording. Avila, bassist Darren Baun, drummer Nicholas Bobotas, and guitarists Jonathan Perez and Coleman Pruitt generate more than 243.3K monthly listeners on streaming platforms. Starting at noon, the Near Southside will be rocking and rolling with some heavy shoegaze and lots of ollies — plus food, drink, and carnival games — as part of The Trauma Ray Carnival. Presented by Magnolia Skate Shop at Fire Station Park Skate Plaza, this free event is mostly a community celebration but also a party for Carnival, the new EP by the namesake band. “Since it’s our event, I guess we feel pretty good,” said Trauma Ray frontman Uriel Avila. “I just wanted to give back to Fort Worth and put the event together for the bands and things we care about in our area.” The bill also includes Empty Shell Casing, Ozone, Defcon 1, and Spurred. Food trucks like Kelly’s Onion Burger and more will be on-site, plus there’ll be a dunk tank with mini carnival games and assorted local vendors.

Picture: The big question here is, has Sinners had enough time to overtake One Battle After Another? I’m thinking not. In fact, I think the real-life killings of Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti will tip the scales in favor of the movie where the bad guy commands ICE agents to pursue the heroes. Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller would be a worthy winner on its own merits, but I think the temptation will be overwhelming to give this award as a middle finger to all the Steven Lockjaws at DHS. You can consult my Top 10 list to see which movies I thought worthy of this award. No Other Choice got lost because its distributor, Neon Releasing, had so many other movies to promote this award season.
22
Actor: Timothée Chalamet has now acted in eight Best Picture Oscar nominees. That’s as many as Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, or Audrey Hepburn managed over the course of their entire careers, and he’s done it before turning 30. I don’t care that he has come up during a time when there are more than five Best Picture nominees. It’s still amazing. Is it enough to get him the statuette for Marty Supreme? How about the fact that Best Actress winners have historically tended to be much younger than Best Actor winners? Does the young-man vote work for him, or does the old guard hold firm for Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another? Or do their constituencies fracture enough to allow Michael B. Jordan to sneak in for Sinners or Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon? I’m not calling this race.
Actress: Unlike the Best Actor award, this one appears to be in the bag for Jessie Buckley and Hamnet. I’ve got no problem with that vis-à-vis the other nominees, though I’d hate to see Sentimental Value come away with nothing, especially with Renate Reinsve being so great. We should really be up in arms, though, about Amanda Seyfried missing out for The Testament of Ann Lee and Tessa Thompson for Hedda (and for those movies being shut out of the Oscar nominations entirely). They gave Kate Hudson a nomination over those performances? Ridiculous.
Merrick Mor ton
SCREEN
Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson are among One Battle After Another’s awards contenders at the Oscars.
Supporting Actor: Another tough one to call. Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn were superlative in One Battle After Another, but a couple of old-timers who have been doing great work for decades might swoop in, between Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value and Delroy Lindo for Sinners. If it comes down to that, maybe Skarsgård has a slight edge over Lindo because he’s made more movies. On the other hand, if it comes down to Del Toro vs. Penn, Del Toro may have an advantage because of the more-than-faint possibility of Penn saying something heinous during his acceptance speech. There are too many variables in play here. Supporting Actress: Black actresses have won this category nine times out of the past 20 years, with no repeat winners. Doesn’t really make up for the lack of victors in the Best Actress category during that time, but it’s still mighty impressive. They can make it 10 for 21, but Wunmi Mosaku and Teyana Taylor may have the vote split here, and there’s also the fact that Taylor’s character largely disappears from One Battle After Another after leaving behind the “this pussy don’t pop for you” note. Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleeas are probably dividing the Sentimental Value constituency, too. This is probably going to Amy Madigan, who has been around quite a long time (it’s been precisely 40 years since her previous nomination) and who made such a vivid red-wigged villain in Weapons. Director: The way Oppenheimer felt like Christopher Nolan’s coronation, One Battle After Another feels like Paul Thomas Anderson finally getting his gold man after making quality stuff since the 1990s. The only threat to PTA will be Ryan Coogler, who’s still young enough to qualify as an up-and-comer but has shown astonishing consistency over the course of his five feature films. Will Benny Safdie be sitting at home stewing in rage because his brother Josh got his first Oscar nomination without him? It’s fun to think about.
Casting: For the first time in more than 20 years, here’s a new category! What does it mean? We can’t draw on previous wins to see what voters think the criteria should be. Does this go to Marty Supreme for Jennifer Venditti’s innovative use of nonprofessional actors? Is this for Hamnet because of the two leads? Or does Sinners get this for the superior quality of so many actors’ performances? (And if it doesn’t win Best Picture, does Coogler’s film snag this trophy as a consolation prize?) Or does One Battle After Another win this as a harbinger for a Best Picture win? Whoever comes out with this, we’ll learn something from it. l

TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/ activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose. Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/ or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/cid.
