impact on the physical and social environment,” Topham said. “Individuals working in corporate, non-profit, private consulting, and governmental agencies are all potential students.” The new initiative is unique among master’s level programs in North Texas because it addresses sustainability across a variety of academic and professional disciplines and focuses on the commercial viability of implementing sustainability practices. This program is available to students with varied backgrounds, with no specific previous education or training related to sustainability required. The current student population is primarily comprised of individuals from government, education, and non-profit backgrounds. It is expected that graduates of this program will be employed in a variety of sustainability related positions, including, but not limited to sustainability directors for organizations, social responsibility officers, and sustainability consultants. During the program, a variety of company sponsored projects and internships are available to students. The 36-hour, non-thesis program can be completed in 16 months. Classes meet Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. The existing cohort format is attractive to working professionals because it allows them to focus on one course at time. Additionally, the cohort format helps to promote enhanced collegiality since they go through

the program with same group of people. Program faculty members are comprised of individuals with a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds related to sustainability and/or specialized support subjects. The Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies– Sustainability Track is administered by the University’s Fort Worth Center. The Center is located in the historic Santa Fe Freight Building in downtown Fort Worth. Its mission is to serve Tarrant County by meeting working professionals’ needs for graduate programming and professional development. Fall cohorts start and attend classes at the Fort Worth Center and Spring cohorts start and attend classes in downtown Dallas. The Fort Worth Center is home to thirteen masters and PhD programs, representing 6 different colleges and schools at UTA. Programs include Executive MBA, Professional MBA, MS in Real Estate, MS in Healthcare Administration, MS in Information Systems, MS in Systems Engineering, MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Master of Public Administration, Master of Education, Master of Social Work, PhD in Urban Planning, and a PhD in Education.

he program leading to the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies – Sustainability degree is designed to develop advanced sustainability analysis and evaluation skills that are necessary to implement and document sustainable initiatives within the changing marketplace. The program coursework is focused on current and historical sustainability trends, financing and valuation issues, and governmental, regulatory initiatives. Embedded within the program are two project studio courses focusing on the US Green Building Council’s LEED Program and on High Density Development. Advanced Geographic Information Systems, quantitative analysis, social networking & communication strategies, evaluation research, budgeting, and grant writing are some of the core components of the program. Sustainability is a global issue as evidenced by our sustainability masters students that participated in a studyabroad trip to Australia and New Zealand during the winter session. Students were immersed in a process of experiential learning that gave them the opportunity to observe and interact with professionals engaged in sustainability practices by viewing actual projects and learning best practices. An example of one of the participating students’ blogs for the study abroad can be found at The program also offers a variety of local and regional site visit opportunities as well as bringing in featured speakers who possess expert knowledge in their field. One of the practical and applied application features associated with this program is a 5-week competition during the summer session that focuses on preparing a feasibility case study for a Sustainable Real Estate Adaptive Re-Use and Redevelopment project in Downtown Fort Worth. Students from other graduate programs at UTA and other universities are invited to participate in this competition. UT Arlington faculty and administration have worked together to design a program that meets the increasing demand for individuals with advanced sustainability analysis and evaluation skills, said Megan Topham, Director of Operations at the UTA Fort Worth Center. “This program is beneficial to anyone interested in the efficient and effective use of resources that minimize the
