Welcome BACK to the Fort Outpost newspaper

I

had several other ideas about this column before things in Europe started happening.

Watching the news coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine made me think of many things: the displaced people in Ukraine, all those who are suffering, even folks far away from the conflict who are worrying about loved ones, and what it would all mean for students at Fort Vancouver.

While it may seem like the fighting in Eastern Europe is far enough away to have little or no effect on our daily lives, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

As the School for International Studies, Fort Vancouver High School not only has a number of students with roots in both Russia and Ukraine but also a community of caring, compassionate teachers and staff. Pay attention as they will continue to make daily connections to what is happening globally, ensuring that you

see your relevance in the world and have the opportunity to understand and think critically and empathetically for other human beings in need.

Put yourself in the shoes of a classmate who may still have family in a city like Kyiv, or a classmate who’s family is from Russia. Decisions have been made that are out of their control but both groups of students are suffering because of those decisions. We need to stay strong and continue to support one another in our community knowing that what we do at Fort will trickle out to families globally.

So if you have friends at school with connections to Russia or Ukraine, take a minute to make sure they’re doing alright.

This is the perfect time to learn a little bit about the cultures of your classmates and practice the social emotional skills you’ve been learning about.

Student Poll: Masks

Hey trappers! The mask mandate was lifted on March 14th, PI day. Almost a month later, we checked back in with our students to see the ratio of how many are still wearing masks, and how many aren’t wearing masks. Luckily, we got some good data, and also some interviews with students.

We spoke with students at Fort Vancouver High School about equity and what they thought needed to change.

Let’s start with the data. SCIENCE!

So yeah, it looks like the majority of our student population is wearing masks.

We got information from 1/10 of the school, so I feel like this graph is pretty accurate.

This month features art and photography students.

Now, onto the student interviews. I interviewed students who said yes and no, and compiled the most popular answers. Let’s start with yes.

Students who said yes said that wearing masks made them feel safer, more focused, and they felt that they were able to focus more strongly on school work. Especially with more variants on the horizon, it gives them more peace of mind. A lot of them also agreed that, at least for them, they’re ok with taking off their masks in other areas, other than school, as long as nobody is nearby.

March was Women’s History Month and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has been making history since she stepped on the national stage.

ASB Corner There’s so little school left, but the ASB has so many things for you to do and take part in.

Students who said no stated that taking off their masks made them able to socialize easier, and they like seeing people’s smiles. A lot of them also said that they feel like when they had masks on, they felt that they couldn’t connect with others as easily, or see their emotions easier. They said that they didn’t like the inconvenience of having a mask on, but they also said they would remask if things got really bad again.

But, just remember trappers, no matter what choice somebody makes, always remember that others have feelings too, and it is a personal choice. Please don’t ever make someone feel like they have to abide by your opinion. In this world, we have to remember to stay together.

quity is always a problem. You can never fully pin down this problem, because it is very hard to control a population of people, and someone will always be mistreated. So, we asked you, the students, what problems you might be having with the school and several themes kept coming up: transportation, different opportunities, racism, and more. It’s not all bad, though, because students have things they like about this school, too. They feel like they usually have someone to talk to, and they feel that teachers are focused on helping students.

First, let’s talk about problems.

Different Opportunities Some students feel like they aren’t getting the same opportunities as other students. This is actually backed up by an equity audit done in the district, which details many of the problems the students feel like they are having. Problems like lack of transportation, disabilities, and poverty. It states that in order to fix these problems, the Vancouver School District should increase the budget for lower class students to make them more included, like offering rides and buses for clubs in order to meet transportation needs, help students who are in extreme poverty and can’t afford to come into schools some days, and more.

It sucks because you can see the problem, but everyone else thinks it is normal.

Ideas for increasing the budget for these students include decreasing the amount of money that is being put into other resources such as the ‘Rainy Day Budget.’

It’s important to help students gain access to these opportunities before it’s too late for them to benefit from them.

Other Inequalities

this is kind of a teacher job, and that’s fine, but students should have more places to go in a time of need.

What I can best see here is that sometimes, our school isn’t very inclusive. This problem is bad, and LGBTQ+ students get to live it every day. Like I talked about earlier, some students aren’t getting included in well when so many cultures exist at our school. A lot of you probably know a religion or culture a family member is in that isn’t very inclusive to some of the student population. I don’t really have a good answer for this problem either. It’s very hard, and right now, our schools aren’t the safe place for everyone they were promised to be. So talk about this trappers, what do you think the best way to solve this problem is?

So, that’s what I noticed while asking my own questions about equity. I noticed several flaws, and the potential of our school if we fixed them. All of them boiled down to this. Stop saving away, and start using the money to benefit the students who need it the most. But, students otherwise think that they can manage going to school, as long as we fix these problems, as one said. So, try to discuss this, and keep learning trappers.

Report System I went to discover, or better understand the reporting system of our school, due to some complaints from students. This, in my mind, ties into racism and harassment. A student gave an example of something that happened to them. They said another group of students was harassing them constantly, and that when they went to report it, nothing happened.

So, I went out to go find out why our report and justice at school is flawed. I got some good responses. In an interview with some teachers and counselors, they said they do their best, but let’s start at the beginning. One, a student has a problem. They go notify a teacher or some other adult, and ask for help. If it’s more serious, they pass it up to the counselors, or to someone similar. This part wasn’t very clear on who deals with it. They follow through with the student, and they do an interview. This happens often, and because of this, there are a lot of problems. They can’t get to all of them with so much on their plate sometimes, and the unclear nature of what could have actually happened. How do we fix this?

I asked several people what they thought the best answer was, and it was unanimous. Get more people to deal with the problem. In fact, I don’t know why they don’t do this already. We need more counselors, that way they can have a more personal connection with the student, instead of having 400+ on their plate. I bet you half of you guys don’t even know who your counselor is, maybe more. This could majorly solve the problem, because they could know the student better. Right now,

Women’s History Month

By Amy Nguyen For March, we’re featuring Congresswomen

A

lexandria Ocasio Cortez, also known as AOC, is a democratic congresswoman and represents New York’s 14th district which is made up of parts of Bronx and Queens..

AOC was elected into the House of Representatives in 2019, being the youngest to be sworn into the House of Representatives at the age of 29 which also makes AOC the youngest woman to be elected into the House as well as being the youngest Latina to be sworn into the House. AOC was born and raised in the Bronx and is of Puterican descent. AOC graduated from Boston University and has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and International Relations.

AOC had an internship at the office of Senator Ted Kennedy during the Congresswoman’s internship she saw the heartbreak of families being separated

by ICE, this lead the Congresswomen to organize Latinx youth in the Bronx and eventually in the U.S, which also lead to AOC working with the National Hispanic Institute and worked as the educational director. Before running for congress, AOC worked as a

AOC also worked as a volunteer organizer for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 election. While volunteering, AOC expanded her activism and electoral skills. AOC ran for congress in 2018 and was sworn in in January 2019.

AOC has done many things that have made a change, one them is the Green New Deal which would be a ten year plan, gives millions of people a job opportunity which has good pay, union jobs, reducing air and water pollution, and fighting the climate crisis, which today has over 115 co-sponsors.

AOC also introduced over 23 legislations.

The congresswomen is very popular for firing questions in committee hearings. In September floods hit the congresswoman’s district, AOC worked with President Biden to get one of the fastest FEMA declarations.

In October of 2020, AOC played Among Us with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar live streamed on Twitch which has over 400,00 views.

Between the Lines

The library is full of knowledge and fun, so let’s look in between the lines and see what books are popular this month and the librarians recommendations. Let’s look at the three newest books.

PICKING UP THE PIECES Newman, a master carver and sculptor turned storyteller, takes you behind the scenes of his multi-panelled, three-dimensional traveling art installation that tells the story of Canada’s residential school story.

THE CHEMISTRY OF FOOD In this book, you can learn the science behind the food and explore the chemistry within the meal, how nutrition works, what creates flavor, and why texture is important. What better place to learn the fundamentals of chemistry than in the kitchen? Get recipes, learn things related to a food career path, and more.

FRESH FRUIT, BROKEN BODIES The most popular/read book right now is about migrant workers, by Holmes Seth.

This book examines the everyday lives and suffering of Mexican migrants in our contemporary food system. Holmes shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care.

War hits home at fort

Russia-Ukraine The history of Russia and Ukraine has always been connected. When 2 come from the same seed, nothing can truly be separated. I feel like facts are needed for you guys, trappers. I compiled some information, so you could untangle and understand, and do your best to help out, right now.

What can you do?

Be careful. Do your due diligence first, as many people, sadly, have taken up to creating fake charities and scamming people. I made sure to check these ones, but if you find more, please check.

We are going to start with history, and I’m going to keep it as simple as I can. In the 20th century is where all of this started. This tension has been gearing up for over 50 years. I’m going to start where the conflict with Russia first started. What sparked this all off was the Russian Civil War, which was started due to doubts of stability.

In 1918, Ukraine declared independence from Russia, but this was short-lived. Soviet forces later overthrow this new, independent Ukraine. Ukraine is then turned into the Ukraine Soviet Socialist Republic, and is then subsumed into the Soviet Union. From 1939, till 1944, Russia annexed a lot of the land to the west of Ukraine, which now makes up Western Ukraine. In 1991, Ukraine declared independence, and at the same time, the Soviet Union was dissolved. Later, in 1994, under the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine gave up some of its artillery that it had, in order for a commitment from Moscow to respect the independence of Ukraine.

Razom for Ukraine. A nonprofit collecting donations to help aid and provide medical supplies, humanitarian aid, and more. Has been open since 2013.

GlobalGiving. They now have a Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, and are using it to give refuge to Ukrainian Refugees.

Doctors Without Borders. They have been working to help people, even in huge crises like this. They provide medical care.

UNICEF. They are giving supplies for education, families, and children. They bring water, protect children and families, and more.

Now we are hopping into more recent years. In February of 2014, there were protests. People were angry, and rightfully so, saying that Ukraine’s leadership had turned towards violation of human rights, and saw government corruption and abuse of power. Fast forward through events, and Russia has new leadership. Fast forward to 2019, President Zelensky is elected. He tries to make peace with Russia. It fails.

There are tons more too. Make sure to help, as these people are in a dire situation. Please remember that they all have feelings too, and they are in trouble. Do your best to help support Ukraine, and always remember, the ultimate goal, should always be peace.

And now. As Russia tries to stop Ukraine from drifting away to NATO, and starts a war. Many people, Ukrainians and Russians alike, don’t want this, and this is truly the fault of a power hungry government. I have a list, if you want to help.

ASB Corner

There are about 2 more months left of the 2021-2022 school year and we’re so proud of you all! Here’s what ASB is bringing to you these last few months: Everyone has been patiently waiting, and now prom is finally set for juniors AND seniors. The date is Saturday, May 21st, 2022 from 7pm-10pm. The venue and theme will be released very soon. Remember all the traditional assemblies we missed during homecoming week? Color War? Competition Tuesday? Well, we’re doing all of this the week of prom!

Monday (5/16) is ‘Monochrome Monday’. Wear one solid color.

Tuesday (5/17) is ‘Sports Day’. Wear your favorite sports jersey! This is also the day of Competition Tuesday assembly where seniors go against freshmen and sophomores go against the juniors in fun games.

Wednesday (5/18) is ‘Color War’. Freshman are silver. Sophomores are green. Juniors are pink. Seniors are yellow. This is the day of our color war assembly. There’s going to be times to set up for the color war assembly, so make sure to stay up to date through our ASB instagram.

Thursday (5/19) is ‘Anything but a Backpack Day’. Bring anything appropriate to carry your belongings EXCEPT your school bag. Have a small bucket?

A little cart? Bring it to school!

Friday (5/20) is ‘Crazy Red vs White Day’. This is a little different than our traditional Crazy Red & White day. Underclassmen will wear white and upperclassmen will wear red. This is the prom assembly where the prom court will be announced.

We hope to see everyone participating and showing your school spirit!

There is also a senior ice skating fundraiser at Mountain View Ice Arena (14313 SE Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver, WA 98661) on Friday, May 6th, 2022 from 7pm-9pm. There is a disco ball at 8:00pm. Tickets are $20 per person and a percentage of the proceeds go back to our FVHS class of 2022 seniors. Make sure you buy a ticket beforehand by using this link.

As many of you know, seniors have a senior party right after graduation. The senior party is June 13th, 2022 (graduation day). Seniors will get on a bus once the graduation ceremony is over and will be moved to a secret location. The bus will take you back to FVHS around 3am. Tickets are $25 until April 30 and will be $50 until May 22. Then tickets will be $75 until June 6. Make sure to purchase early for a better deal! In addition to senior stuff, the mural the seniors earned the opportunity to make by winning the canned food drive competition in December is being painted over Spring Break! The mural will be on the wall by the business office. Thank you again to everyone of all grades who participated in bringing food for our community. You made a difference. Good job!

TURKEY CUBAN SANDWICH

Recipes

A Cuban sandwich. Good for main dishes and is really

Spring has Sprung! Although, by the time the newspaper is released, it will have been that way for over a month. I am glad it is spring though! But, anyway, here are some sandwich and salad recipes just for you!

INGREDIENTS 8 slices of crusty bread 4 slices of swiss cheese 8 slices turkey 8 slices of ham 2 pickles, sliced lengthwise Dijon mustard Butter, at room temperature

PINEAPPLE MARSHMALLOW JELLO-O

INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat a panini sandwich press.

(make the day before needed) 1 Lg. pkg. lemon Jell-0 2 Cups boiling water 2 Cups 7UP 1 #2 can of drained pineapple (save the juice) 2 Cups mini marshmallows (or enough to cover the Jell-O) 2 Cups cubed bananas Mix ingredients together and put in the refrigerator.

The next morning.....

In a saucepan, combine: 1 Cup pineapple juice (if you didn’t get a cup of juice by draining the pineapple, you can use 7UP or water to make it a full cup.)

2 Tablespoons flour (Wondra works best, no lumps) 1/2 cup sugar 2 Tablespoons butter Cook over medium heat until thick.

Spread over the set Jell-O, and chill for one hour.

Spread all bread slices on one side with Dijon mustard. Top a slice of bread with swiss cheese, turkey meat, ham, pickles, and second slice of swiss cheese; top with second slice of bread, Dijon side down. Repeat to make a second sandwich.

Spread outside sides of bread with butter and toast in a panini press.

•

Slice in half and serve.

FUNERAL POTATOES 2 lb bag of frozen southern style hash brown potatoes 8 oz sour cream 8 oz shredded medium cheddar cheese 1 can cream of chicken soup Johnny’s Seasoning Salt Pepper Garlic powder 4 tbsp butter • • • • • •

Mix together the sour cream, cheese, soup and seasoning (to your taste).

Add potatoes and mix well.

Melt 2 tbsp butter and coat the bottom of a 9x13 baking pan.

Spread potatoes in a baking dish but do not mash down.

Add 2 more tbsp of melted butter over the top.

Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until the sides are bubbling.

KEY CLUB & AMBASSADORS CLUB At Fort we have a lot of clubs that students might not know about or don’t know what they do. There are a lot of cool and amazing things that these clubs do that are not seen by the majority of students at Fort, so here are a few great things about some of these clubs.

Key Club is a club that I’m sure at least some people have heard of, especially with a poster being up in the science hall, but not many people know what Key Club is about. Key Club is a program that gives students community service opportunities. Key Club allows students to gain leadership skills and meet new people with great ideas to help the community.

Key Club helps the community through public service events and builds skills that the student can use in life.

If you want to join Key Club meets bi-weekly on Wednesdays at 7 in the mornings and talk to Coreyanne Russell Student Ambassadors is a club that represents different cultures, ethnicities, genders, activities, and academic abilities.

Student Ambassadors are nominated at the start of each year by Fort teachers and staff. In the past they spoke at Global Youth Service Day but couldn’t this year due to COVID. They also are the tour guides for when special groups come to visit Fort. Student Ambassadors gain a large amount of leadership and social skills from talking to people and being able to help people.Though you can’t join this year if you are interested in it ask about it with your teachers next year if you can get nominated for it.
