Welcome BACK to the Fort Outpost newspaper

I

had several other ideas about this column before things in Europe started happening.

Watching the news coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine made me think of many things: the displaced people in Ukraine, all those who are suffering, even folks far away from the conflict who are worrying about loved ones, and what it would all mean for students at Fort Vancouver.

While it may seem like the fighting in Eastern Europe is far enough away to have little or no effect on our daily lives, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

As the School for International Studies, Fort Vancouver High School not only has a number of students with roots in both Russia and Ukraine but also a community of caring, compassionate teachers and staff. Pay attention as they will continue to make daily connections to what is happening globally, ensuring that you

see your relevance in the world and have the opportunity to understand and think critically and empathetically for other human beings in need.

Put yourself in the shoes of a classmate who may still have family in a city like Kyiv, or a classmate who’s family is from Russia. Decisions have been made that are out of their control but both groups of students are suffering because of those decisions. We need to stay strong and continue to support one another in our community knowing that what we do at Fort will trickle out to families globally.

So if you have friends at school with connections to Russia or Ukraine, take a minute to make sure they’re doing alright.

This is the perfect time to learn a little bit about the cultures of your classmates and practice the social emotional skills you’ve been learning about

COVID Chaos

At some point, all students will have to get a job, be it after college, high school, or even having a job already. The struggle of keeping up with school and a job can seem daunting to many people but from the experiences of students with jobs, it isn’t as bad as one would think.

Comfort your friends, stay in contact with them. Try your hardest this year, because with enough effort anyone can get through these difficult times.

These students often work on school days and not just weekends or breaks but from their experience, they can keep up with school work effectively while still working. The places that these students work most often are supermarkets and fast-food restaurants. Around half of the students that are working will continue their working at the same location after high school while the other half will go to college and work at a different job.

Of the students that don’t have a job already, many of them wanted to get a job before graduating. The drive for these students to make money is a diverse mix but much of the reason is to have money to spend. The other common reason was to pay for college or a car.

BOXING CLEVER

THE CHAOS OF COVID Covid. It has been a YEAR though. Things have broken, things have been lost, and people were lost. But people should take a second for the people here. I’m worried about the students and staff. I am going to talk about the effects of covid, grades, social, emotions. Interviews with teachers and counsellors who will share their thoughts. A story from an anonymous student too.

Isaac Dennett Editor in Chief rades, they dictate it all. Jobs, colleges, even simple things, and bigger things too. Immigration requires good grades. Kids have lost their grades. Tough year for all. “[It] definitely impacted my grades in school. I used to be on top of everything but have fallen so much behind” Kids have said this, and if you are beating yourself up, don’t!

Get support from classmates and friends over the phone, work together on assignments, you can do this. But, there is a point where you can’t do much else. You shouldn’t hold yourself responsible for this. Take the good parts and do the best you can on the bad. Friends have had a whole different turn.

Some people haven’t been able to see their friends outside of school. Depending on who you are, this part might not even apply to you. For me at least, I know I already spent a lot of time on the phone playing videogames with my friends. But some of you out there have had different problems. “Not being able to see my friends “ “Covid caused my grades last year to

be terrible and has made my high school experience turn into something different than I thought it would be.” But, you are like everyone else. Everybody is having this problem, but there are other options! Try to have fun with your friends cause right now it will mean more than anything.

Emotions. We all have them, no matter how much somebody may try to have them. Some kids, a lot actually, have been feeling very depressed and sad.

I used to feel that way too, but I invested myself in things. If you are feeling depressed, doing things helps. One student said “anxiety and horrible grades with a little sprinkle of depression” If you are feeling this way, you just need a plan. Plan out your next few days, for a sense of purpose. I promise you, it will make your time worth it.

Teachers care too. They watch and help their students that are having a hard time. It is harder to tell though when a student is going through something especially hard right now, because masks can hide your emotions, and having one larger wave of feeling in a sea can make it harder to help a student.

I interviewed several teachers, and I will include notable things. “Right now, things are harder than ever.

I think that student’s morale is harder than ever, which is why I try to be more social and funny than usual.” Several teachers are doing this to lighten and relieve some of the stress that is being put on students right now. “I think it is harder to connect with students right now, but some things haven’t changed. I am still there for my students, and they can still come to me for help. I try to make a lot of work time so I can walk around and ask my students how they are doing, and do my best to connect with them. It just means we have to try harder right now to help students out.” Remember guys, you still have people there for you.

I also interviewed some of the counsellors. Counsellors see the most students. They said that grades have been lower, but all of the counsellors are personally doing their best to reach out to their students and make a success plan. In an interview, they had a message for you, the student. “You still have time.” In Ms Riordan’s office, she has a poster up that says, Excuses are like buttholes, they all stink. And it’s true, I think most of you out there, if you can’t fix it now, can still try harder and do your best later.

Below is a story from an anonymous student, they wanted to share how they felt, so other students don’t feel as alone. This story will show you that we need to get together as students and comfort each other right now.

“It broke my structure of succeeding in school. I stopped having my best interest in school and made me think of dropping out and just finding a job. I stopped shining like I used to. Maybe, it is not covid to blame for bringing me back down, but entering high school from middle school.

That transition was like from being valued in school and knowing your place to being lost and feeling out of place. I used to be a good student and a good example for the people around me with my positive attitude towards learning and accomplishing my goals. Now it is like I’m doing work, but it does not have value to it. I’m like a spider building a web that is easy to break. At first seeing people wearing masks all the time made me feel like they were hiding something and being suspicious. Now, without seeing people smile, there is nothing to keep me alive and thriving. Sports was another problem, I was not doing any last year because my grades were not good even though I later on fixed them. Now when I do wrestling it is hard to have Secret Santa.

People would be there to practice and then others won’t be, I never get to see my team together or have the schedule full of matches. Other schools have been closing wrestling, leaving us with no one to compete with. It’s sad because this year it is someone’s last year to wrestle. I’m seeing my counsellor once a week, just to keep myself away from dropping out and to believe that I have a value in life.

I don’t want to blame covid, because it is not like it was an intentional cause of some sort. I don’t feel safe going to school, knowing that many of the students and staff have covid and are quarantining. I go to school instead of staying home and doing it remotely, because at home I’m at my comfort zone. School is a major print in my life that will affect my future. With all of the stress and doubt that school has left a scar on me because of covid, I don’t think that is something I want to continue doing. I thought about if my problems were because of covid or school in general. It is kinda both. If there was no covid there was no masks, no going home when you have symptoms, no covid testing, full sport schedules, no social distancing, no remote learning, more hands on projects, more students going to school, more smiles to see, and finally I would meet up with my friend that lives in Oregon. This will make students safer to go to school. This would make me enjoy life better and who knows maybe have all A’s like I used to. Traveling would not have been a problem and going to public places. For people to go to doctor appointments or hospitals would have not been so difficult. I hope this has been worth my time sharing with you.”

Some students are going through a tough time, but I do believe that someday this will be pseudonormal again. I think that together we can overcome this year, this terrible year. Comfort your friends, stay in contact with them. Try your hardest this year, because with enough effort anyone can. Belief and believing in yourself is half the challenge.

re you confused with xello? Many people share that opinion. It can be a mess sometimes. But, this guide is going to help guide you through the process, and maybe teach you some new tricks.

You might want to do this right away when you first log in (through classlink!), and you should. Make sure to do all the things on the right column. They are very important! These are the core lessons that might help you find a career path for the future.

In this column on the right, you can see many columns, but in the My Plans section, you can see the course planner. Here you can plan out what classes you want to take so you can see the credits you still need, and to see what options you have. You also go to this section when forecasting, so you can prepare it early. That way you don’t have to worry about it then!

In this picture, you can also see more lessons. Here you can see more of what might help you for the future, career wise.

It’s also rather fun in my opinion to learn about different jobs.

AVANT TESTING

D

o you speak two or more languages? Are you good at speaking them? Do you need high school credits? If 1 or more of these questions are a yes for you, then read this article! In this article, I am going to talk about the benefits of AVANT, how to take the AVANT, and some details about it.

AVANT is a test offered by the school district. By taking this test, you can get up to 4 high school credits! You score the amount of credits for the score out of four you get. So, even if you are not fluent, you can get one or two credits. If you get four credits, you also get a license on your high school diploma that says you can speak two languages. It is called a stamp of bi-literacy!

So, you are sold on the idea of taking this test. But, you don’t know how. That’s fine!

By talking to your counsellor, you can find out if the AVANT test is right for you. Your counsellor will help you figure that out, the next time for taking it, and help you prepare for it.

The AVANT is a test composed of four parts. You can take it for a language of your choice, but the largest percentage of people who take it take it for Spanish. You don’t take these parts in any particular order, it’s up to you, but I’ll list them in order of what I remember.

Reading is first. You read a paragraph, and later some larger texts, and answer some questions. Reading is the easiest part of a language in my opinion, so you should take that first.

Next is listening. You listen to some audio, and then answer the questions.

Next is your choice, but I recommend speaking. You are in what I like to call ‘Spanish brain’ and you are ready. You have a prompt, and then you speak about it. If you don’t remember the word, describe it in Spanish, extra points for never dipping into English.

Last is writing. This one should be less stressful, cause you have more time. You write an essay about something the test gives you. That’s the test! In my opinion, it won’t be too hard if you know the language alright, it can be very forgiving.

That’s the AVANT! You now have extra credits on your transcript, and if you want, you can take extra electives. Good Luck!

THESE DISNEY BOOKS HAVE A NEW DESTINY A SERIES OF “WHAT IF?” STORIES GIVES THE BACKSTORY BEHIND MAJOR VILLAINS AND AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE OF EVENTS IN THEIR LIVES There’s a new section at the library! The Disney-oriented area contains the backstory of villains, original stories, and time warps! If you want to know more about the alternate timelines some stories could’ve had, then this is the place!

Some of these are a must read. If you couldn’t tell from when I talked about it earlier, the ones with alternate endings are my favorites. Make sure to ask about them, and read them to find your favorites.

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off.

The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

Black History Month By Amy Nguyen February is Black History month, also known as Black Appreciation month.

lack History month is where Black history and achievements are celebrated. Black History month isn’t just celebrated in the U.S it’s also celebrated in other countries such as Canada which is also celebrated in February while Ireland and the U.K celebrate it in October.

It was created by Carter G. Woodson who was dedicated to celebrating the historic contributions

by Black people which led to Black History month.

Black History month is in February because both Fredrick Douglas a leader in the abolitionist and former slave and Abraham Lincoln who thought and taught that slavery was wrong were both born in Febuary.

Black History month was recognized in 1976 by President Ford.

Black History is American history, Black people have played a very important role in America’s history such as culture, art, literature, politics, and so much more. Happy Black History month!!

Amy Nguyen interviewed Zay Q- Do you ever feel like being Queer make you less Black?

A- I don’t personally feel like that.

But other people when they find out I’m queer in their eyes they will think I’m less Black.

Q- What’s your favorite part of being both Black and Queer?

A- The acceptance because I feel when I’m in a group of queers I feel more accepted and I don’t have to hide that my homosexuality.

Q- What are the challenges you face from being both Black and Queer?

A- It’s the fact that a lot of Black people won’t accept that I’m queer. I feel like I already face a lot of oppression from being Black and that I have to hide that I’m queer.

Q- Do you ever feel like you have to pick between identifying as Queer and Black?

A- Yeah definitely especially when I’m around another group of people.

Q- For those reading this, what would you want them to take away from this interview?

A- That because I am different than you are doesn’t make me truly different and it doesn’t affect my personality. I’m still a person and people should understand I am who I am.

ASB Corner Happy Spring Trappers! Here’s a few updates on what’s been happening in ASB and what we’re planning on bringing to a reality.

As you know, there was a food drive before winter break that was made into a class competition. Seniors won and we’re collaborating to paint a mural somewhere around our school that represents FVHS but also incorporates our 2022 seniors. Good job to everyone who participated and each class did well. Freshman had 108 points, sophomores had 1,091 points, juniors had 197 points, and seniors had 1,101 points. This made a huge impact on our community.

In addition, we are working on honoring our past athletes by creating a “Wall of Fame” and “Record Board” with some of our best athletes who have already graduated. If you know of anyone who has been in all-league and graduated 2010-2019, please contact us. If you haven’t already, sign up for a Spring sport and you could happen to appear on one of these in the future! There’s girls golf, girls tennis, fastpitch softball, baseball, boys soccer, and boys & girls track & field for the Spring season. No experience needed.

Unfortunately, there isn’t going to be a winter dance or a traditional non-formal dance this year due to COVID cases rising. However, there is going to be a prom primarily for the seniors then being opened up to juniors if there’s space left. SENIORS, there have been 2 surveys sent out by our ASB advisor (Owen Frasier) to your student email. Please respond to those, as your feedback is important to giving you all the best prom possible under these circumstances.

Our school also has a Unified team who consists of amazing special-ed athletes. Volunteers (some being within our ASB class) have committed their time to practice and play as a team with Ben Moore, Tayler Williams, and Wyatt Anderson. This is a great opportunity to connect deeper within our school and community. The games are a positive environment where we cheer on both teams. t’s the end of winter (almost) and we are getting ready for spring!

My favorite season. But my favorite sports season is winter, and it just ended. Let’s take an in-depth look at the Fort Vancouver swim team! Our school’s swim team combines with Hudson’s Bay because we don’t have enough people, but it does mean that we have a fun team.

Head coach Sarah Dunn has this to say about the season: “This year was definitely a good building year for our Fort team. Last spring, when the season was pushed to the end of the school year and reduced to only 5 weeks, we only had 3 guys on the team. I did a lot of recruiting this fall and it definitely paid off! This year we had 13 guys join the team: 3 seniors, 0 juniors, 3 sophomores, 8 freshmen! We’re going to have a strong foundation to start with next year and I look forward to building from there.

Season highlights: Our group of guys is unique. For the past several years, the team has trained with the Hudson’s Bay team, mostly because the 2 teams were small and could share the pool space. Eventually, one coach took over both teams and the teams basically blended into 1 big team.

We still score separately at meets and wear different colors, but we do everything together and I really think that’s what makes our team unique and a lot of fun! Ask any guy on the team- they just love the camaraderie we have. They’re all brothers. They all support each other, joke with each other, terrorize each other, but in the most loving way. When we show up to meets, everyone can see it- we have something special. Other coaches comment to me on how much fun our team has and what good spirit we have. I’m definitely proud of that. Our first-year swimmers did an amazing job learning the ropes- and there’s a LOT to learn in swimming. Lots of rules. They all learned all 4 strokes, turns and starts. Something I’m most proud of as a coach is when a firstyear swimmer takes on the challenge of doing a new race or a stepping up to take on a difficult race. That’s why we chose, last year, as a team, to make the varsity lettering requirement that you had to compete in 2 out of 3 of the following races at least once in the season: 200 IM, 500 free or 100 fly. I wouldn’t make this a requirement if I didn’t think people couldn’t do it. I know I can get first-year swimmers to the skill level needed to attempt these races, but it takes some confidence and willingness to take a risk on the part of the swimmer to try these events and I’m very proud of those who did. (Who did? Isaac Dennett, Brody Will, Jonas Catton, Braydon Johnson).

Fort placed 6th out of 11 schools (beating Bay, Washougal, Seton, RA Long & Hoquiam); Fort beat Bay in every dual meet; Fort gains wins over Battle Ground, Columbia River, Skyview, Washougal, Seton Catholic, RA Long, Hoquiam, and Heritage.

Fort also beat Bay in our first annual Red vs. Gold intersquad meet. I’ve decided to make this an annual tradition. Each team chose a line-up of some serious and some not-so-serious races to compete against each other in. We will do this every year as a bit of friendly rivalry.

Lastly, Fort had one swimmer qualify for state. Tarik Kurta will compete in the 50 free & 100 free. He is currently ranked 5th in the 50 and 11th in the 100.”

Tee off with the Girls Golf Team! Go to the driving range and hone your skills. Improve yourself during games, and find your favorite way to play. Softball has been scientifically proven to be harder than baseball, but in different ways. It is told to be a more complicated and strategic game than baseball. It is also less competitive, so join softball for a more slow and less competitive and chill experience. Practice your skills, and learn the way of the field.

Are you interested in tennis? Face off with others in the tennis court with the Fort Team. Add to your skills, discover your new favorite sport in tennis. Nothing like a little Crock Pot cookin' The crockpot, it’s actual term slow cooker, is a cooking device.

Picking up steam in the 1940’s, it was made under a NAXON lead engineer, Irving Naxon, for cooking bean meals. The Rival Company bought NAXON, acquiring the patent for the slow cooker. It was then redesigned to cook entire family meals in the 1970’s, innovating the tech and boosting its popularity. If you have a crock-pot, here are some recipes given by my mom just for you! She has won slowcooker and chili competitions! I think these recipes will serve you well.

Mom’s Award Winning Meat and Bean Chili

Pig’s Pulled Pork

Known by my family as the best chili ever tested, and known in our local community, this chili is known for lasting for days, while being amazing. It always produces more than needed, which is good because you are going to be wanting leftovers for days.

This is so good for picnics. Although, it’s good for birthdays too. My dad makes this every birthday and it is SO GOOD. Barbecue goodness that leaves you feeling satisfied.

1 lb. hamburger 1 medium onion, chopped 15 oz. can kidney beans, undrained 15 oz. can ranch style beans, undrained 15 oz. can pinto beans, undrained 14 ½ oz. can Mexican stewed tomatoes, undrained 15 oz. can tomato sauce 1 envelope dry chili seasoning mix 3 tbsp. brown sugar 3 tbsp. chili powder Steps Brown hamburger and onion together in a nonstick skillet Combine all ingredients in a 3.5 quart slow cooker. Mix well.

Cook on Low 8 hours, stirring occasionally.

Makes: 10-12 sandwiches Prep. Time: 10 Minutes Cooking Time: 12-20 Hours Ideal Slow Cooker Size: 4-5 Quart 2 onions, sliced 4-5 lb. pork roast 5-6 whole cloves 2 cups water 16 oz. bottle barbecue sauce Steps Put half of sliced onions in the bottom of slow cooker. Add meat, cloves, and water. Cover with remaining sliced onions.

Cover. Cook on Low 8-12 hours.

Remove bone from meat. Cut up meat.

Drain liquid.

Return meat to slow cooker. Add chopped onion and barbeque sauce.

Cover. Cook on High 1-3 hours, or on Low 4-8 hours, stirring two or three times.

Serve on buns.

Kool Kielbasa and Barbecue Beans Sausage and beans. A combination of delightful flavors leaving you satisfied. I recommend this one for smaller parties though.

2 15 oz cans black beans, drained and rinsed 2 15.8 oz Great Norther beans, drained and rinsed 1 15.25 oz can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 onion, diced ½ cup barbecue sauce ¾ cup ketchup 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp mustard 1 tsp chili powder 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar ½ cup maple syrup ¼ cup molasses 1 14.5 oz can chicken broth ½ lb bacon, cooked, cut into bite size pieces 2 lbs Kielbasa, cut into bite size pieces Steps In a large slow cooker, add all of the ingredients except for the kielbasa and stir gently to combine.

Place the kielbasa on top and cover with the lid.

Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. Stir in the kielbasa before serving.
