all is the time of year when the weather turns and daylight seems to fade earlier and earlier.

The cold weather keeps many people inside but brief glimpses of the leaves in beautiful colors and the sunrises with crisp blue skies combine to create amazing views that keep people going through this dark time of year.

As we stop to enjoy these moments we should also remember that others may be struggling this time of year as well. Reaching out to help others can be just as rewarding as the beauty nature provides.

The Fort community is excellent

at reaching out to those in need as evident through events such as our Community Clothes Closet, and Thanksgiving Dinner Drive Through.

If you know someone who is struggling or in need check in with them, there are resources available throughout our Fort community and people willing to help. Give grace and understanding to others who may seem out of sorts and take care of yourself and others as we weather this Winter season together.

PSAT/NMSQT FORT STUDENTS

Achievments of our Fort Vancouver students!

H

ello all! Last year, our class of 2025 took the PSAT. The PSAT is a practice SAT students can take as sophomores.

I recommend everyone takes it for practice, potential scholarships, and just because there shouldn’t be a reason not to.

The PSAT is not required to apply to most colleges, and the SAT is phasing out as well, but both can still make you eligible for a lot of scholarships. Even if there may not be as many that you can get from the PSAT, it is a very important practice to have for

the SAT. One of the biggest challenges for the SAT can be the stress from being in an environment where every action you make matters. Every question’s answer is important to getting a better grade.

The PSAT can help you lessen the stress by giving you some insight into how the test goes, how hard it is, and just being more familiar with the process. The scores came back at the end of last year (https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home).

Students who get placed in the top 10 percent get automatically placed into a program for the NMSQT scholarship. This scholarship then has you retake the test this year, and students who do well will apply for the scholarship, and get it for very little work in total.

This is one of the reasons I think everyone at our school should take the PSAT, no matter what. If you do well, it’s free money!

Also, students who win the NMSQT scholarship can also get a larger scholarship from sponsors. For example, you can get a massive scholarship from WSU! For more information, reference the NMSC website. (https://www.nationalmerit.org/)

he survey on the opinions of the new schedule was surprisingly split evenly.

The three options are if people like the new schedule, don’t like the new schedule, or have mixed opinions. Each of those groups had around 33% of people choose one of those options. Unsurprisingly, the reason why people liked the new schedule would be that they get to sleep longer. The dislikes of the new schedule had a range of different opinions.

Many people had difficulty with existing schedules, be it work, picking up siblings, or sports.

FALL SPORTS RECAP

Fort Vancouver High School Trappers

T

he fall sports seasons include cross country, boys tennis, boys golf,football,volleyball, slow pitch softball, cheer, girls swimming, and girls soccer. Here is a summary from Athetic Director James Ensley.

Cross country: Pretty good season, 2 girls qualified for state; boys and girls placed very well.

Boys tennis: Did really well, Andrew qualified for state and he placed in 4th place in league overall they did great job.

Boys golf: 2 golfers they both did a great job hopefully we can get more golfers next season.

Football: Was a rebuilding year. They got a win at the start of the season and then competed for the rest of the year.

Volleyball: Good season. Had their first league win against Woodland; a great group of girls and they really improved.

Slow pitch softball: Won 3 games this year. They had a full time team we used to combine with Skyview but we had enough for our own team, new coach this year and the girls had a wonderful experience.

Cheer: Had a great season they ended up cheering for multiple sports and did community service. They went to both away and home games to make sure the support was there and the coach did a great job Girls swimming: Had girls qualify for districts this year, had a fun time, and continue to do better.

Girls soccer: Had 2 full teams for the first time with JV and Varsity, multiple wins including against Bay and had multiple successes on and off the field.

The History of Halloween

H

alloween was originally a Celtic holiday from Samhain, and was a pagan religious holiday to celebrate the end of summer and the harvest. People would wear costumes to scare away ghosts and dance around a bonfire. Pumpkin carving, or originally turnip carving, was used to ward off evil spirits and protect people. While there are many ways it could’ve started, trick or treating could’ve started from three different ways; Celtic’s leaving small offerings out to give to spirits but then people started dressing up for offerings, or trick or treating came from a practice that involved people asking for food and giving prayers in return. The final way trick or treating could’ve been created from a German-American tradition where children would dress up and call their neighbors so see if they could recognize them, being rewarded with treats if they could not recognize the kids.

While critics hate it, the fans of the video game series absolutely love it. When a security guard is hired at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria, he soon discovers that there may be a secret to the old animatronics, and maybe they get just the tiniest amount of quirky at night.

OUTPOST 1973 FORT ALUMNI DAVID MARTEL AND SUE BIRD DEALT WITH A TORNADO DURING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE. THIS INTERVIEW IS ABOUT THAT TORNADO, THEIR NEW SCHOOL BUILDING, AND EVERYTHING THEY ACHIEVED..

O

n April 5, 1972 in the Vancouver and Northeast Portland area, a tornado swept through the area.

The weather was normal with only one difference at 11:00 in the Willamette Valley area, strong showers from the coast were approaching the area. The showers made their way West up to Portland and Vancouver, thunderstorms occurred in Tigard and Tualatin area with strong thunderstorms with high wind that was going 60 or 50 mph. According to the National Weather service “Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air, extending from a thunderstorm, which are in contact with the ground. Tornadoes develop when wind variations with height support rotation in the updraft.”

How did the tornado impact you mentally?

Sue: So, I was talking to David when we were getting here thinking back 50 years, it happened so suddenly students were trying to help each other instead of thinking “oh I might get hurt if i help them”.

David: I was in typing or business class facing towards the student parking, the clouds turned an eerie color. We went over to the elementary school and half of it was demolished and students were under desks. We helped them out until the firefighters and ambulance came. The teachers told us to stay back but we had to help them. Sue and I lived across the hill and we were deciding to go back home to see if anything happened at home. Luckily our homes survived. We had an assembly a week later when the governor came down. It was a pretty major thing. It happened our junior year and our next senior year things were calmer.

The first reported touchdown of the tornado occurred in Portland, near Marine drive and NE 33rd Street, it eventually moved up North to Vancouver and its second reported touchdown was on Highway 14, then to the Mcloughlin Heights neighborhood. The tornado headed towards the other side of the Mcloughlin Heights neighborhood towards the old Peter S Ogden elementary school and Fort Vancouver high school which is where Parr Lumber is, leaving 6 dead and 300 hundred injured. 70 of those injured were students of Peter S Ogden elementary school.

You said you were a part of Key Club, swimming, Alki yearbook staff, how did you handle both academics and extracurricular activities?

David: I sold all the ads so every year it was the local business that I sold too.My adviser would give them to me and during my free time I asked local businesses and would go up and down main street. The school would send them. If we had enough money we would ask our advisor if our yearbook could be in color. I strictly advertised them and sold many so we could have them in color. They took pictures in

What was your favorite memory of high school?

Recently the Class of 1973 had a reunion. How did it feel seeing everyone from high school back together, knowing that everyone now has their own lives, jobs, and even families? color, it was really fun and easy. It was repeatable. They had to buy a yearbook for the school so I asked them if they wanted to resign their contract. We met twice a week and shared a class with the journalism club.

Sue: I wasn’t able to attend but it was fun to reconnect with others and see what they had done with their life. It was nice to see them have careers and professions helping the community.

When you were editor of the school newspaper how did you run it?

David: Nothing was being planned and we asked around if there was gonna be one nobody knew, we had a 10 and 20 year reunion before.

There were 300-400 in our senior class back then.It took a year to plan it, they helped plan the dates and chose to do it on the columbia river.

One person focused on posting on facebook, I networked and asked if they contacted this person. We did a spreadsheet last year to see how many people could attend. Had a buffet dinner, we wanted extra money for decorations and tried to find old teachers. We tried finding a price that wasn’t too much. We had a class treasurer that was handling money and chose $73 since we’re the class of ‘73. 130 people came which wasn’t bad, we tried begging some to go and they would say they didn’t like high school. There were 2 MCs and unfortunately we found out 50 of our classmates had passed away. We had a memorial table for them with candles and pictures of them. Another one of our classmates scanned out our yearbook and created name tags for us. They invited a classmate from the year infront of us and behind us to help out. Everyone had their different opinions on decorations and what they wanted there.It worked out fine it was really fun. Ceila Moore, the one running, contacted the school and someone from the video production got paid to record it and edited the video which was 2 hours long.

Sue: We ran it by doing it like the regular advertising newspaper is.

Brainstorm ideas, assign them and have a deadline, the editor goes through the articles and reviews them. Pre computer days we had typewriters.

How do you feel being the first graduating class at the new “Fort”?

David: I thought it was very special that it worked out that way for us and we were there for 3 years and graduated. We had good sports teams and a graduation ceremony in the gym. I was in a band but didn’t perform since I was graduating. It was very special, we had an in campus radio station and great equipment and piped into any classroom.

Sue: I would agree we were able to establish our traditions Do you have any tips for the current journalism members?

Sue: Plan for interviews with a pre-set of questions, add detail to story and descriptions, check facts, and review before submitting.

Fort’s Great Prevention Club Recognised in the Columbian

During the week of October 23rd to 30th, our Great Prevention Club planted tulips in the Fort Vancouver garden beds as a way to raise awareness for substance abuse.

Around 20 of the members worked together early in the morning on the 23rd to plant the tulips at the school’s flower beds near the front of the school. After hearing about the display of tulips from the group, the Columbian got some quotes from the club members.

“We’re out here planting tulips as a promise to our community that Fort Vancouver High School cares for its families and community by creating a space for our youth to be empowered and successful“ This occasion was to celebrate the beginning of the Red Ribbon week.

Red Ribbon week is the largest campaign Nationwide to support the prevention of substance abuse. These students wanted to show they care for the people affected by substance abuse.

The goals of the Great Prevention Club are to educate people about the harmful effects of substance abuse and guide more people to be drug free. They do this all year by hosting events like the planting of the tulips that either motivate people to become drug free or to spread awareness.

FIRST Peoples Assembly Students were treated to a cultural assembly focused on Indigenous Peoples Month. Performances included authentic costumes, dances, drumming and more. Clubs involved in presenting at the assembly included the Micronesian Melanesian, and Polynesian Pacific Island Club, the Black Student Union, Chiano Student Movement of Aztlan, and other Student Ambassaors.

My first recipe, Spicy Pot Roast with Oranges, Sweet Potatoes, and Calabrian Chile Gremolata originated from New England. The second recipe, Toasted Lamb Chops with Brown Sugar-rum Glaze, is a delicious savory (yet sweet) meal.

Spicy Pot Roast with Oranges, Sweet Potatoes, and Calabrian Chile Gremolata

Roasted Lamb Chops with Brown Sugar-Rum Glaze

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil, divided

2 heads garlic, peeled

1 (4-pound) boneless chuck roast, trimmed

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

4 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more to taste

2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves

1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste

2 tablespoons rubbed sage

•

2 oranges, divided

•

2 (2-pound) racks of lamb, frenched

1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced

•

1 tablespoon kosher salt

•

2 cups unsalted beef stock or water

•

1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper

1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled San Marzano plum tomatoes, crushed

Flaky sea salt, to taste

3 whole Calabrian chiles in oil, divided

•

1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

1 pound celery root, turnips, or rutabagas, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup packed chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

3/4 cup unsalted vegetable stock

After the roast is shredded and returned to the Dutch oven, let cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Gently reheat over low.

Roast lamb in a preheated oven until browned, 16 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven, and quickly brush the tops and sides of the lamb with about 1/4 cup glaze. Return to the oven, and roast until lamb reaches desired degree of doneness, 5 to 8 minutes with an internal temperature of 125°F for medium-rare. Transfer lamb to a cutting board, and let it rest for 10 minutes.

Cut lamb between rib bones to separate into chops, and arrange on a serving platter.

Sprinkle it with flaky sea salt to taste. Drizzle with about 2 tablespoons of glaze, and serve remaining glaze on the side.
