Experience “living military history” with Joint Base Lewis-McChord at Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 15 at Cowan and Memorial stadiums.

With plenty of exhibits, food and free fun and entertainment for people of all ages, you don’t want to miss the festivities beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting until 6 p.m.

The origin of Armed Forces Day Armed Forces Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May to honor the U.S. Armed Forces.

The formation of the holiday was an effort supported by President Harry S. Truman and was announced by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson on Aug. 31, 1949. The holiday serves 6

as an educational program of sorts for the civilian community to expand the public’s understanding of the military.

Everyone in the Puget Sound community is invited to attend the Joint Base Lewis-McChord celebration.

Get active – walk or mud run At 8 a.m. avid walkers may register and begin the Volksmarch at Carey Theater, next to Cowan Stadium (for details, turn to page 17. Get downright dirty at the Down & Dirty Mud Run at 9 a.m. behind Soldiers Field House.

Travel back in time There will be both historical and modern-day military displays for children and adults alike to explore, as well as demonstrations and mock battles throughout the day.

“Living military history groups range from Renaissance swordmakers to Vietnam- and Desert Stormera reenactors,” said Kate Laverents, MWR Special Events director.

Visit a Revolutionary War-era encampment and encounter frontier cavalry, Civil War units, WWI reenactors with JBLM roots and more.

The Philippine Scouts represent the Spanish-American era and WWI, and the Buffalo Soldiers comprised the first permanent African American regiments. Also joining the festivities are Friends of Kilroy, the 2nd Connecticut Regiment of Militia Colonial Reenactors and the Puget Sound Military Vehicle Collectors Club.

mers and dancers, holds tradition in the highest moral regard, honoring a long history of symbolism. The group travels the region playing the music of inspiration, and they are visiting JBLM to honor all Soldiers and Airmen from the past and present.

Additionally, hands-on displays of equipment will fill both history buffs and others with delight.

Entertainment for kids The festival wouldn’t be complete without Kids’ World, which promises to be fun for children of all ages.

Kids’ World features a variety of games, rides and entertainment.

Also roaming the festival grounds will be stilt dancer Janet Rayor, a cappella group Flying Aces, Eric Haines,

Ron and Carol Browning keep history alive as they dress in period attire as Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Roosevelt. Learn about the life and times of the Roosevelt era at Armed Forces Day.

Musical & comedy stage acts The Main Stage will feature a number of musical and variety entertainment acts for your enjoyment.

• Buck and Elizabeth, regular entertainers at Armed Forces Day and a favorite of JBLM children and families, will take the stage at 10 a.m. and at 2 p.m.

• 2nd Edition’s popular folk music at noon • National entertainer and radio and TV personality Wayne Soares will be a laugh a minute at 1 p.m.

Child Care Office in Building 2013B. Thirty-nine children, providers, parents and FCC staff recently visited Lattin’s Country Cider Mill in Olympia as part of the FCC farm curriculum.

The children enjoyed a picnic lunch, a sheep-shearing demonstration and a tour to feed farm animals – chicks, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, quail, goats, pigs, cows and rabbits. The Down & Dirty Mud Run is Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at Soldiers Field House at JBLM-Lewis Main. Dress as your favorite super hero to be eligible for a “Down & Dirty” prize. The route is filled with hills, obstacles, and of course, plenty of mud and water. Hose off at the finish line, and check out the Armed Forces Day festivities at Cowan and Memorial stadiums.

The early registration deadline is Wednesday, May 5, and entry fees are $5 for active duty military, retirees and their family members; $10 for DoD employees; and $20 for civilians. Register after Wednesday, May 5, and add $10. Registration closes

You can do these exercises at home with minimal equipment. Give them a try to help strengthen and tone your body and reduce your risk of injury.

Please note, you should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen. Fitness assessments can be completed at the gym with a certified fitness trainer. Step 2

This is a challenging abdominal exercise due to its isometric position (muscular contraction is held), and it is very fatiguing on your body.

Step one: Have a partner stand in front of you, with your knees between their legs. Get set in a “lock up” position where your elbows touch the top of your knees. Contract your abdominal muscles.

Step two: Have your partner slowly rock you back and forth while keeping your abdominals contracted with your elbows staying in contact with your knees.

Try three sets of four to 10 repetitions.

Most exercises done on one leg require more balance, core stability and coordination than work done on two legs. This exercise challenges these components and improves upon weak points in traditional squatting. Use a bench or chair that is above 90 degrees.

Step one: On one leg, slowly lower yourself onto the bench, using a mirror to monitor form. Be sure your knees are not going past your toes.

Step 2

This interesting exercise improves pulling strength and helps tone biceps and upper back. All it requires is a towel and a pole.

Step one: Loop a long towel around a sturdy pole, holding both ends.

You can make a knot to give you a better grip. Lower yourself into a squat. The deeper the squat, the more challenging the exercise.

Step two: Stand up. Too challenging? Stand up with both legs. As you master the exercise, lower the bench. Advanced move: Don’t use a bench.

Step two: Pull yourself forward, keeping your heels on the ground.

Finish the exercise by pushing to bring yourself back to the starting position.

Try two to three sets of five to eight repetitions on each leg.

Try two to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions.

It’s easy to check out children’s books at Book Patch or McChord Library.

Reading and research are made easy with free services at Joint Base LewisMcChord libraries. Access the online catalog (from the libraries or at home!), full-text research databases, online tutoring sessions, as well as e-mail and the World Wide Web at the JBLM libraries.

Patrons can check out books, videos, magazines, tapes, access reference materials and receive materials from other local libraries through the inter-library loan program. All you need is a DoD ID card to check out materials!

JBLM has four libraries available for service members, retirees, students, civilian employees and family members: Grandstaff, Book Patch, Crittenberger and McChord, plus the Book Shelf at the Wilson Hi-Tech Recreation Center.

Celebrate Children’s Book Week Celebrate a love of reading and learning with Children’s Book Week at Lewis-McChord libraries! Stop by Book Patch and McChord Field libraries any time during the week to celebrate a love of books! Book Patch Library will be celebrating with a special story time and craft event on Wednesday, May 12 at 3:30 p.m. Children’s Book Week began in 1919, and in 2008, the Children’s Choice Book Awards began. Every year children, teachers and librarians vote for their favorite stories at bookweekonline.com.

Story times Regular story times are offered at Book Patch Library Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and the first Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. The McChord Library offers story time with a craft inside the children’s library each Thursday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Gaming stations and more JBLM libraries now offer in-house use of gaming systems, and some games may be available for checkout.

Popular movies, e-books and audiobooks, music and more are available at all locations, and language learning and test prep materials are available for students. Teens can get into the Manga section and teen station at the McChord Field Library. Be sure to check out Playaways (available at all locations) and paperback deployment kits at Grandstaff Library.

Video messenger Available in Grandstaff and Crittenberger libraries, video messengers are portable recording studios that help keep families in touch with their deployed Soldier or Airman. Soldiers and Airmen may record messages for their families, or read a book to their children on video before deploying. Additionally, video messengers are available in Afghanistan and

Quilts for Kids The goal of Quilts for Kids is to make comfort quilts for children who are having difficulties with a parent(s) being deployed. The volunteer group meets at Grandstaff Library Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. No quilting experience is required. Monitor your credit with help from Financial Readiness The information on your credit report impacts the rates you pay on loans and credit cards and may cause you to lose your security clearance if it shows you are far behind in your debts. Read your credit reports at least once per year to be sure that the information in each report is correct. FRP will: • Print all three credit reports free of charge (if you have not accessed them in the last 365 days).

• Walk you through each report to be sure all of the information on your report is correct.

• Write letters to your creditors in the event any information on your credit reports is incorrect.

• Follow up with you once you begin to receive responses from your creditors.

Educational & career opportunities Furthering your education

Ready to enroll in college courses? Registration for the summer term opens this month. Counselors are available at Stone Education Center on JBLM-Lewis Main (253-967-7174) and Madigan Army Medical Center (253-968-2707).

Counselors can also advise on the GI Bill, test prep programs, tuition assistance and scholarships. For reserve tuition assistance information, call 1-800-347-2734, ext. 3140.

Computer access, a CD-ROM research library and CAC pin reset are available at the Technical and Academic Resource Center, which is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (253-967-2171).

The on-site bookstore returns all generated profits to the community (253-964-8185). Stop by the Education Center’s Battle Bean coffee shop for locally roasted coffee and specialty drinks, salads, bagels, sandwiches, chips and other goodies.

It was a good use of space inside the American Lake Community Center with the exception of it was a little hard to move around if someone had strollers. It was fun, and I think the kids really enjoyed having this event.”
