What does MWR do for you? Meet MWR employees who serve with you in mind

C

olette will be the first to tell you that JBLM libraries are not only places to learn and explore but also places to have fun and connect with others. As a military spouse, Colette has always wanted to be involved with MWR. “MWR has been part of my family life for the past 17 years,” Colette says. “Because of what MWR has done for us, I’ve wanted to work at MWR libraries and serve our military community.” Colette became a staff member at Grandstaff Library in October 2019, then a branch manager at McChord Library in October 2021. “I love that we get to serve our patron base with programs, materials and services that have value to them,” she says. “I also love the interactions — helping patrons find what they need and telling them about the other programs we offer. “Many people don’t know all we offer — 3D printing, Makerspace, youth programs — we’re so much more than storytime! Those who know our programs come back and it’s nice to see the same faces return.” As with any library that aims to stay relevant in its programming, JBLM libraries are constantly updating their services, databases,

6

books and programs. “My staff offers a variety of skill sets,” Colette says. “We learn to use new and different resources in order to bring them to our patrons, whether it’s learning how to do 3D printing or finding the right books for book club. There are so many new things that we can offer, and deciding what works here for us and the patrons takes time and effort, and it’s worth it.” During the initial COVID shutdown and ongoing COVID mitigation strategies, JBLM libraries learned to quickly adapt. Much of the adaptation came through online programming and remote learning resources. “When the world was restrictive, we went to social media and curbside service for patron engagement,” Colette says. “As a result, we offer plenty of opportunities and resource materials whether we’re in person or not.” Colette continues: “During that time a couple of years ago, I had to relearn algebra while my children were at home. My children and I used library databases to access programs for learning higher math and Japanese. I found our databases opened up a new world — from learning ancestry to playing chess! Knowing what you can access and utilizing it makes all

the difference — I didn’t realize how much is offered!” As with many of us, Colette learned how to thrive in spite of COVID restrictions. “I had to hone my skills while helping my children learn during remote schooling. JBLM library resources helped both me and my children. If there’s anything you want to learn, we have

incredible resources to use for your personal and professional growth.” As for working beyond COVID challenges, Colette says, “I look forward to the day when we can drop the masks. No matter what, I love what I do — the versatility, changing seasons, youth clubs — it’s an amazing way to serve others.”

Participants under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. The $25 cost includes instruction and practice outdoors. FEATURE

Going green is easier than you think By Patti Jeffrey o save the planet, we’re asked to go green. But what does going green look like in our everyday lives? Well, it’s as simple as buying a gently used flea market item, refilling your water bottle, washing your car at an MWR car wash or borrowing a book. Here are tips from MWR you can adapt to your own needs.

T

Turn junk into treasure One person’s trash is another one’s treasure at annual flea markets in the MWR Fest Tent each year. Curb your consumerism and leave room for more space and joy in your life. Clean out your closet, garage or attic, rent spaces and sell your gently used items for cash! If you’re looking for inexpensive items for your home, you’re doing the planet a favor by reusing flea-market treasures. For details on this month’s Spring Flea Market, see page 17.

It’s about acquiring less You can find a number of ways to reuse items rather than buying. When your first impulse is to go out and buy something you want, stop and assess whether you can find it somewhere else. Here are some examples:

• You never need to buy videos, video games, books or music. JBLM libraries cater to players and learners of all ages. Come out for family activities, play video games in spaces devoted to gaming, explore STEAM concepts, download e-books, e-audiobooks, e-music and e-movies! Join a monthly book discussion or bring your kiddos to storytimes at McChord Field and Lewis Main libraries. With access to 100,000 books, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music and video games, you’ll never need to purchase your own (or you can purchase used books at one of the seasonal usedbook sales the libraries hold). • Buy a used vehicle on base. What? Previously used vehicles? For sure! If you’ve worn out your own car, need to get one for your teen or need a back-up vehicle, spend some time at the POV lots at Lewis Main and McChord Field. For more information, visit JBLM.armymwr.com under POV Resale Lots. • Rent instead of buying outdoor recreational equipment. It’s all about renting and sharing what we already have, right? Instead of throwing away your cash by buying and storing all your recreational gear, see what Continued on next page.

JBLM.armymwr.com 15

you can find at Adventures Unlimited and Northwest Adventure Center, including outdoor party and game equipment.

Active recreation, guilt-free Save gas while you travel to adventures in the great outdoors this spring. You’re already used to carpooling to work or school, right? Here’s another way to save gas — sign up for group trips with the outdoor adventure program. Sit back and relax while your guide drives the group on spring trips, such as kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and whitewater rafting. Another bonus is that you get all your equipment provided along with round-trip transportation (pages 8–11). Golf at Audubon-certified golf courses. Did you know that JBLM has two Auduboncertified golf courses? Both Eagle’s Pride and Whispering Firs golf courses go to great lengths to preserve the natural environment and beauty or the surrounding areas. When you golf at either location, you can take pride in your support of going green on these environmentally friendly courses. Stay lean and green with JBLM races. Along with human-powered outdoor adventures and golfing, enjoy the many fun runs that we’re offering year-round! Sign up now for the ShamRuck & Run (see details on page 19). Look for other upcoming races this spring and summer. For the complete schedule, visit JBLM.armymwr.com under races. Other ways to stay lean while you’re going green are to join a free fitness class (find the schedule at JBLM. armymwr.com), join intramural sports (page 19), volunteer to be a youth sports coach (page 40) and swim laps at Kimbro Pool.

Cleaner car care Have you ever seen a neighbor doing car care in the driveway? Any used fluids, such as oil, antifreeze or lubricants, must go into hazardous waste instead of the trash can (or even worse, down the drain). All the birds, fish and wildlife in the local area are affected by these decisions every day. A simple and smart choice is to change your oil at an MWR Auto Center. All you do is book a spot at the Auto Center at McChord Field. For a small fee, you can rent a stall or lift and change the oil in a warm, dry place and have the staff safely dispose the used oil and other fluids for you. Even more, you can tap into staff members’ expertise on how to better maintain your vehicle. Call McChord Auto Center at 253-982-7226 for more information. Also remember to wash your vehicle at a car wash that recycles used water. MWR offers two car washes, one at McChord Field next door to the auto center and one at Lewis Main located by the DuPont Gate.

FEATURE

Turn healthy thinking into healthy living By Erin Rice, Chelsea Long & Kellie Jorgensen ow has your New Year’s resolution been coming along? If you’re like many of us, you’ve made it through holiday parties and have set personal goals to lose weight, eat healthier and exercise more. Regardless of where you stand today, it’s never too late to head down the path to health and wellness. Once you get started, you’re on your way to a more positive lifestyle and better quality of life. Here are some tips to remember throughout the process: Six months: Experts say it takes at least six months of consistent behavior change to transfer into a habit. If you can hit the five-year mark, you’re even less likely to relapse. Relapse is common: Relapse is most common in the first few months, so don’t give yourself a hard time if it happens. It’s perfectly normal to hit barriers on your journey to health. Stay positive, pick up where you left off and continue on. If you start to lose motivation, find an exercise partner, a wellness program or a fun goal to reach, such as a JBLM 5K fun run or intramural sport (see page 19).

H

When boredom strikes: Oftentimes, we find ourselves in a daily rut. Be open to change! Find a way to make your routine enjoyable by trying a new recipe, changing your running route, taking a free fitness class (visit JBLM. armymwr.com for the current schedule) or asking a family member to join you. Reward yourself with positive incentives: Set small goals and reward yourself — a new pair of shoes for walking the next 5K, for example. Choose prizes that align with your goals, and avoid those that deter them (junk food), as this can trigger a relapse and have the opposite effect of what you’re trying to achieve. Once your goal has been achieved: Sometimes we don’t credit ourselves and recognize the small successes that lead up to your bigger goal overall. Take a step back to recognize and reflect on the small steps that lead to overall goal achievement. Setting a goal and achieving it is monumental, no matter how small or large it may be. Now that you’ve reached your first goal, it’s time to set the bar higher for yourself. Plot out your successes ahead instead of

22 Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS March 2022

along the way. Set your overall goal and identify steps and benchmarks to hit along the way that lead up to goal. For those goals you haven’t achieved yet: Sometimes we set the bar too high and lose motivation altogether. We blame ourselves for being inadequate and say destructive things like, “I failed again and ate that cookie. I should just give up on my goals altogether.” If this is the case for you, try setting smaller goals for yourself and rewarding the positive changes you’re making. If you need help with setting goals or increasing your motivation, join an established wellness program or find a lifestyle coach. Maintain your new habit: Success starts from accomplishing small goals that lead to

bigger goals. Take a big goal (running a 5k), and break it down into smaller attainable goals that lead to success (running three times a week). Ensure it’s attainable and realistic for you. Work with someone experienced/educated in your interest area to gain proper insight. Have fun: As with many things, we welcome challenge and change. However, everyday life can provide obstacles that sometimes make our goals difficult to reach. To succeed in changing behaviors, make it fun! Do what you enjoy. Get out of your comfort zone and try new activities. You may meet others who have similar goals and interests while you’re at it. Always remember, it’s never too late to start or make changes in your life! It’s always a process and a worthy journey.

MWR Question of the Month

30 Joint Base Lewis-McChord FOCUS March 2022

JBLMmwr

We asked our Facebook followers: If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do? Here’s what many of them said: Jessica: Play the lottery! Julie: An Olympic figure skater. I’ve always loved how beautiful it is, but don’t have the talent for it. Robin: I could say “end world hunger.” That’s too easy. How about, “Find intelligent life in another galaxy.” Jennifer: Build a time machine. Patty: Explore. Hayley: Live my best life. I know it sounds cliché, but so many things stop us in our tracks “just in case.” If I knew that I could do all that without failure, then that’s what I would do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m trying now — it’s just hard going all in with all the unknown! Jennifer: Go to college. I never felt like I could afford financially to fail so I just never jumped in. Deborah: Run around the world! Ellie: End COVID. Kimberly: I would open an animal sanctuary where most of the animals would be certified as therapy animals. I would work with people who suffer from PTSD and other anxiety and stressor disorders and use the animals

in animal-assisted therapy. I’d love to finally be able to impact those who are suffering and make a difference. Jason: Be a success mentor similar to Darren Hardy. Maria: End cancer! Moja: Skydive! Chrysta: Open up an allwomen’s gym with child care. Angela: Be an actor (who has steady work!). Kayla: Start a small business. Gina: Discover the cure for all kinds of illnesses. Denise: I’d be a Olympic diver. Courtney: Make everyone financially stable. Erin: Open a group home for foster children where they don’t have to leave when they age out of the system. Ashley: Cure cancer, stop wars, end world hunger and cure COVID. Kateri: Open an animal shelter and women’s and children’s shelter, work to end food insecurity, build affordable and quality, energy-saving housing for low-income families with community gardens and programs for children, be a surgeon, oncologist, midwife

or obstetrician-gynecologist. If I knew I couldn’t fail, literally anything I could think of. David: Make homemade tortillas. Courtney: Work with marine conservation and own a dog sanctuary! I want to help all the animals I can before I die! Cindy: My kiddo says “Be President”! Neth: Run around the world with my family. Kathi: Go on a diet. Teresa: Write all the papers and take all the tests in ILE without studying or doing any research. Carman: Solve world poverty. Priya: Find a cure for COVID so we can all move forward with our lives. Melinda: Help people all around the world in raising communities and helping schools. Linda: End racism. Rachael: End abductions of all forms and all ages! Lilith: Heal Earth and save humanity. Elsa: Save the endangered species, therefore helping save our environment as well. Jeanne: Spread kindness throughout the world.

Wash cleaner at MWR car washes Did you know that dirty wash water from commercial car washes get sent to wastewater treatment plants? That’s true with MWR car washes. If you wash your car in the street or driveway, the water goes untreated into the storm drain and ultimately into a nearby body of water. Only the rain down the drain — that’s why we recommend using MWR or commercial car washes.

MWR Staff Pick Each month, hear what staff members across MWR like best about our services!

Rachael Courtesy photo

My favorite MWR program is Outdoor Recreation. I enjoy the wide array of rental items that they offer — anything from snowshoes to travel trailers. I’ve enjoyed staying in the cabins; when we have family visiting they can stay there, too. Waking up in the morning to look over

American Lake is a truly amazing sight. It’s also convenient to rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, walk it right down to the water and take off. The Northwest Adventure Center offers many items for purchase and classes that you can sign up for; learning to SCUBA dive was my favorite class. They offer fishing tackle, hunting equipment, clothing, hiking gear and much more in the retail store.
