Head out on new adventures Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of adventures for everyone

Spring ‘Sasquatch Search’

Women’s sunset fire-lookout hikes

Come help search for Sasquatch in the Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass Saturday, April 1. We’ll use an interactive map during our search — are you up for a mystery hunt?

Ages 5 years and older are welcome to sign up (with parent or guardian supervision for minors). We provide transportation, map, interactive media, juice and snacks at the top of the hike. Wear weather-appropriate clothes and pack water, snacks, camera and necessities.

Women, join us for a series of hikes to fire lookouts and savor the sunsets! We’ll start out easy this spring and work up to hikes with rock scrambles later on.

Join us Sunday, April 2 for a short and moderately steep hike to Heybrook Lookout, where fun stairs invite you to climb up the tower.

We’ll be hiking a moderately steep, but short trail to High Rock Lookout Saturday, June 24.

The lookout is dramatically higher than its surroundings, giving you breathtaking views.

Ages 18 and older are welcome to sign up.

We’ll provide transportation, a guide and trekking poles as needed. Wear layers and hiking boots and bring comfy shoes for the drive.

Pack a headlamp (for hiking back after the sunset), extra batteries, water and snacks.

UW photo walk The University of Washington is known for its classical architecture and beautiful landscaping. Come with us Sunday, April 2 for a photo walk among blooming flowers in the “Quad.”

We’ll walk along Azalea Way, a three-quartermile path through the heart of the Arboretum lined with flowering cherry trees, azaleas and dogwoods.

All ages are welcome to sign up (with parent or guardian supervision for minors). We’ll provide transportation and instruction. Bring your camera, lenses, extra batteries and memory card and wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.

Bike ride among tulips Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to take a bike tour among the colorful tulips fields during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Saturday, April 8. No matter the weather, we’ll be enjoying the beauty and freshness of these dazzling displays.

Hike to Cape Flattery Cape Flattery is a nature sanctuary on the northwestern-most point in the continental United States, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the Pacific Ocean. In this setting, you’ll see dramatic headlands, sea stacks and deep, narrow coves where seabirds, whales and sea lions congregate. On the return trip, we’ll stop at Ruby Beach with views of Destruc-

tion Island.

Join us Saturday, April 8 for the drive out with a stop at the Longhouse Market in Blyn for breakfast and coffee!

All ages are invited to join us; minors must have parent or guardian supervision. Be prepared for rain and windy conditions and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Pack lunch, water and snacks for the day.

We provide round-trip transportation, an experienced guide and parking fees. We’ll be leaving early at 6:30 a.m. and arriving back about 7 p.m., so please make sure your family members are up for this very long day.

Walk through the tulip fields Let us drive you to the famous and beautiful Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Sundays, April 16 and 30. This month-long event is the secondlargest tulip festival in the U.S. and features tulip fields and display gardens on four tulip farms.

Ages 16 and older are invited to join us; minors must have parent or guardian supervision. We’ll provide round-trip transportation.

The fields might be muddy, and the weather might be chilly or rainy, so be prepared and dress in layers with a waterproof jacket.

Join whale-watching trip Come with us on a whale-watching trip Sunday, April 16. We’ll be touring the inner coastline by boat where whales migrate in the spring. We’ll be on the lookout for orca, humpback, minke and gray whales.

All ages are invited to join us; minors must have parent or guardian supervision. We provide transportation, tickets and other fees.

Be sure to wear warm layers with an outer rain jacket due to chilly sea conditions. Also pack water, lunch, snacks, binoculars and a camera!

Hike to Mashel Falls Explore three waterfalls in one hike Sunday, April 23 or Friday, June 2! The Little Mashel River Waterfalls area, contained within the gorge of the river, is a gem tucked away in the forest and includes an accessible alcove behind the middle waterfall.

Ages 10 and older are welcome to register.

Be aware that the trail near the falls is slippery and wet; wear proper footwear and rain gear.

Take Wilderness First Aid If you’d like to become certified in Wilderness First Aid, take our hybrid course Sunday, April 23.

You must be enrolled by Monday, April 10 in order to complete the online portion of the course before you go on our field trip portion and complete the final assessment.

This course is open to ages 16 and older and costs $125 for the course. Once you enroll,

you can immediately begin the online learning.

The hands-on outdoor training is coordinated by a Base Medical Certified Instructor. The final exam must be passed with an 80% or higher score in order to become certified.

Learn fly fishing on trip Learn fly fishing on one of two overnight trips on the Yakima River May 4–5 or May 18–19.

These guided trips are walk-and-wade or, for an extra cost, drift boat fishing.

The trip includes flies, tippets and small tackle items, fly rods and reels, a shuttle service while fishing in the Yakima Canyon and beverages.

Pack waders and boots, personal clothing, food and water and overnight camping gear (you’ll be sent a packing list). If you don’t own these items, check out renting your gear through Northwest Adventure Center.

Coffee & kayaking Our backyard is the Puget Sound — let’s discover marine life on an early morning kayak paddle Sundays, May 7 or June 11. Bring your favorite morning beverage, water and waterproof bags for personal items and wear sunscreen.

This trip is open to ages 18 and older. We provide the kayaks, paddles and trip leader.

Explore Victoria, B.C. Hop on the ferry and spend the day exploring Victoria, B.C. by foot Saturday, May 13.

Enjoy a bite to eat at a local restaurant or check out the local shops within walking distance of the ferry terminal, close to major Victoria attractions. Stop in the Royal B.C. Museum, take in high tea at the Empress Hotel (reservations recommended) or visit China Town.

Photography 101 Every good photo begins with the right exposure. As adept as modern cameras have become, they aren’t perfect, and they’re not good at making artistic decisions.

Elevate your picture-taking from good to

great with a general understanding of the three elements of exposure: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. This hands-on course meets at Russell Landing Marina Saturday, May 20. Bring your DSL camera, lenses, extra batteries and memory card.

Explore Puget Sound Welcome to the Pacific Northwest where it’s only 45 minutes or 40 miles to do anything you want! Come with us Saturday, May 20 for a full day of exploring what this area offers.

We’ll take a ferry ride on Puget Sound, check out the Olympics and discover gems along the way! Depending on the time, we might stop for dinner on the way back.

The trip is open to all ages (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). We’ll provide transportation and ferry tickets. Bring a camera, pack a lunch, water and snacks and wear layers.

Hike to scenic waterfalls Join us for a scenic hike to Snoqualmie Falls and Franklin Falls Sunday, May 21.

We’ll take you to Snoqualmie Falls where we’ll head out on a paved trail with interpretive signs describing what you’re seeing at this historic site. The hike is short and easy with

one steep stretch as you’re hiking back.

The three-tiered Franklin Falls is an easy two-mile jaunt, great for beginners.

Ages 10 and older are welcome to join with parent or guardian supervision. We provide transportation and a guide. Pack lunch, snacks, water and your camera. Bring a rain jacket and wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.

Kayak to Hope Island Hope Island State Park in the South Sound is only accessible by boat. This island jewel is covered with old-growth forests and saltwater marshes.

We’ll kayak to the island Sunday, May 21 and Saturday, June 17 to spend the day exploring.

The round-trip kayak is approximately four miles.

The trip is open to ages 14 and older (with parent or guardian supervision for minors).

We provide transportation, guide, kayak, dry bags, safety gear and neoprene footwear (if needed).

Pack water, food, appropriate non-cotton clothing, sun-shielding hat and sunglasses (cotton is a bad insulator and will chill you if you get wet; quick-drying clothes are a must).

See Bridal Veil Falls

Looking to climb mountains in the Pacific Northwest? We’re offering mountain-climbing trips throughout the 2023 climbing season!

You must be in excellent physical condition in order to be part of the climbing team.

Contact us early if you want assistance in your training program.

• Summit Mount Hood May 26–27. Mount Hood is an excellent place to learn fundamental mountaineering skills; no prior experience is necessary. Our goal is to help you summit with a bit of education, training and encouragement along the way!

• Conquer Mount Baker June 23–25.

Mount Baker provides a fantastic climbing experience both novice and experienced mountaineers can enjoy.

This mountain is considered the perfect introduction to mountaineering and the best glacier training experience in the U.S. • Climb Mount Rainier July 30–Aug. 1.

Join us to attempt to summit one of the taller mountains in North America, the iconic Mount Rainier! We’ll climb 9,000 feet on snowfields and glaciers, travel short distances on rock and possibly cross ladders. Registration is based on schooling and experience — the more training and climbs you’ve accomplished, the higher the chances of getting on the roster.

• Also take the Alpine Rescue Course April 15. We’ll cover all the basic skills required to arrest a fall, build a solid snow anchor and extricate a climber from a crevasse, plus more methods using various gear.

Come explore the amazing sheer rock-faced 100-foot Bridal Veil Falls fed by Lake Serene at Mount Index Friday, May 26 (the start to Memorial Day weekend). The forested trail has a moderate incline over 4.1 miles with scenic views.

Ages 16 and older (with parent or guardian supervision) are welcome to join us. We provide transportation, guide and spikes (if needed).

Pack water, lunch, snacks, a rain jacket and a camera. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy hiking shoes.

Take rainforest photos Come explore the Quinault Rain Forest in the Olympic National Forest with us Sunday, May 28.

We’ll ride the 30-mile loop road around Lake Quinault and visit waterfalls, streams and exquisite rainforest growth to take landscape photos.

Keep an eye out for Roosevelt elk, black-tail deer, bald eagles and other wildlife while we walk on short trails into the rain forest.

All ages are welcome to sign up; minors must have parent or guardian supervision.

Hikers must be able to navigate the mainly flat trails on their own.

We provide transportation and instruction.

Pack your camera, gear water and food and wear waterproof shoes and wet-weather gear.

Sign up for photography clinic Learn about photography and put the concepts you learn into practice during several field trip shoots at our photography clinic June 2– 4! This is a good option for beginners just learning about photography or intermediate photographers looking for an excuse to shoot more.

The course consists of classes and field trips over three days in the greater Tacoma and Seattle area.

We’ll cover photography subjects and techniques, as well as the basics of photography.

Topics include wildlife, landscape and urban photography, getting to know your gear, elements of exposure, light, post-processing, ethics of photograph and much more!

Participants younger than age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We provide transportation and expert instruction. Bring your DSL camera gear and wear sturdy walking shoes with appropriate clothing for the weather.

Go whitewater rafting Beat summer heat with us on the cool water of the Wenatchee River on our whitewater rafting trips Saturdays, June 3, 10 and 17; Sundays, June 4, 11 and 18 and Monday, June 19.

Trained instructors will guide you in rafts that hold 4–8 people as you paddle through class-III waves and rapids. Consider making a weekend out of your journey and stay overnight in Leavenworth!

You’ll be driving to Leavenworth and meeting us at the public boat launch or Dryden Dam. Participants younger than age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We provide wet suits, booties, personal flota-

tion devices and instructions. Wear clothes you can get wet in and bring a change of dry clothes, lunch, water and waterproof sunscreen.

Camp & rock climb at Vantage Come with us for an unforgettable weekend June 10–11 climbing the towering basalt columns of Frenchman’s Creek at Vantage overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. We’ll camp on the sagebrush steppe and explore these special places while we get to know our growing community of climbers.

You must be comfortable tent camping in cool overnight weather. We provide climbing instruction and equipment and group cooking equipment. You need to pack all meals and weather-appropriate clothing. Bring your personal climbing and camping equipment if you wish. If you don’t have camping equipment or tents, you can rent gear from Northwest Adventure Center.

Hike the famous Ape Cave Head to Mount St. Helens with us to explore the Ape Cave Sunday, June 25. Travel deep into the underside of a 2,000-year-old lava flow to scramble under and climb over volcanic

To become a lifeguard student, you must be age 15 or older. You’ll need to schedule an in-water pretest at least two days prior to the first day of class. The pretest consists of a 300-meter front crawl or breaststroke swim, two-minute tread using legs only and a timed brick retrieval.

Upon successful completion of the pretest, you’ll receive the blended learning online content and directions (which include training, pocket mask and certification). You must complete an online course (approximately seven hours) prior to the first day of class. Expect a physically strenuous class with skills work both in and out of the water.

At both Lewis Auto Center and McChord Auto Center, you’ll find workers and volunteers who have decades of experience between them, as well as a clean and safe environment to get your work done.

The ultimate goal of the auto centers is to provide education and peace of mind for our Service members and their families. They’ll provide you with the skills to be more independent and give you honest information and feedback about your vehicle.

Self-help is the goal JBLM auto centers don’t provide services like your traditional auto shop because the goal isn’t to solve a problem for you but to teach you to solve the problem, allowing you to become more self-sufficient and empowered throughout the project.

At each bay, you have access to a full toolbox as well as nearly any tool you can imagine available for checkout at the desk.

At McChord, come in for a full vehicle inspection followed by suggestions of what to work on first, knowing that you and your vehicle are in good hands.

Advice is always free, and so is Wi-Fi to access YouTube tutorials and other tools to help throughout your project as needed.

You can find online access to Chilton auto repair manuals, which provide detailed information about your vehicle as well as a breakdown of complete service, repair and maintenance information in a user-friendly format. The Chilton manuals can be accessed through the MWR libraries online resources page at JBLMlibraries.com.

If you’re less experienced, call McChord Auto Center to schedule a car-care class that covers maintenance such as oil change or brakes.

More than just an auto shop McChord offers more than just maintenance and repair services; they also offer vehicle welding at an hourly rate and act as a disposal site.

Lewis, which is open one day a week on Saturdays, offers a quick lube service and three-hour projects, with a 20% discount for ranks E1–E4. For engine maintenance, Lewis is an ideal location for Army Service members.

Some disposal services offered at both locations are tire, battery and engine, which allow you to start and finish your project all in one place.

Free inspection & oil change MWR auto centers are here to serve the people who make the commitment to serve every day. The team of employees and volunteers are honored to do so. Dealing with a deployment is stressful enough, which is why the auto centers are here to help.

A special service offered at McChord Auto Center is the maintenance inspection for deployed spouses.

When you bring in a copy of your spouse’s orders to McChord Auto Center, you’ll get a free vehicle inspection by appointment, so you know if there’s any work that needs to be done on your vehicle or if there’s any upcoming maintenance that will be needed.

Both auto centers offer a free oil change for deployed spouses. Bring in a copy of your spouses’ orders by appointment for this service and your own supplies (oil and filter).

Take a walk with curious birders

By Patti Jeffrey ave you noticed that every time you get outside, birds are everywhere?

Birds can actually help us make an easy connection with our natural world. Look closer and you’ll soon find that spotting bird species also can thrill us with the hunt for elusive treasures, much like geocaching.

Start a new adventure by going on a birdwatching walk at Eagle’s Pride Golf Course.

For 10 years, birders have gathered monthly to walk around the wilder parts of the golf course, trying to spot birds they’ve not seen before.

Organizer Denis DeSilvis says, “This is a good place to go for birding with knowledgeable people. We have a unique area — a forest bordered by a prairie and wetlands.

And the best time to watch birds here is April through June during breeding season.”

Denis should know — his education includes a bachelor’s degree in zoology and master’s in wildlife ecology. He says, “When I was in fourth grade, I wanted to be an orthinologist and I’ve had bird feeders since I was a kid. I’ve been birding here since 1979; it’s a phenomenal area for birding.”

When you first start birding, Denis says that you naturally want to spot species by sight.

But most of the group’s identification comes through hearing their songs and calls. “We try to track them down and see them,” he says, “but sometimes we can’t since the trees are 80–100 feet tall.”

The group has encountered surprises over the course of walks. “We identified a northern harrier raptor, which was totally unexpected for this location,” says Denis. “And few months ago, we found almost 50 varied thrushes — an unusual amount — and in the exact same

spot the next month, we had 120 robins. Why there? How does this happen?

“A red-tailed hawk has nested several years

by Hodge Lake, the only natural lake on the golf course,” Denis continues. “You usually see them eating voles and other small mammals, but we found they’ve been eating earthworms for their protein! We’ve also seen other unusual breeding birds nesting on or by the lake, including Bullock’s orioles and grebes.”

national database that provides real-time data about bird distribution and abundance. Denis also sends results to all participants to add to their own records.

Over time, the group has drawn 250 folks all the way from Snohomish to Vancouver, Wash., according to Denis. “This is a gorgeous place, and the golf staff is amenable to us,” he says.

“Come out and see the forest. If you’re new, we have experts who can help you learn to identify bird calls and species. We’re an easy group to associate with and we have a good time.”

How to join Curious to join a walk? The group meets every third Thursday of the month at 8 a.m. at Eagle’s Pride Golf Course’s driving range (building 1514). Group experts will show you how to listen and look for different species. If you have binoculars, bring them. Dress in layers on cool mornings, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and snacks.

Anyone is welcome to join. You don’t need a base pass and you can just show up — no registration is needed. If you have questions about the walk and accessibility, call the trip leader at 253-843-0663.

Did you know Eagle’s Pride Golf Course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary?

Eagle’s Pride Golf Course is not a small birding site: It consists of about 540 acres that include the three nine-hole layouts. Of the acreage, about 60% is forest or undeveloped land. It’s a very spread-out area, and our bird walk takes us along a 3.2-mile trek, crossing or paralleling just a few holes of the course.

The habitat is mixed, with Douglas fir, Garry oak and vine and big-leaf maples predominating the overstory, with an understory typical of Northwest forests. It’s a nice place to bird for forest and edge species.

Registration is easy It’s easy to register your family in Child & Youth Services to access before- and after-school programs, child care, youth sports, Hillside Youth Center and more.

Once you arrive at JBLM, you should register your children as soon as possible with CYS to take advantage of all the programs offered during the school year and beyond. Find a registration checklist at JBLM.armymwr.com under Parent Central Services. Call 253-966-2977 for an appointment.

If you need child care, you can place your family members on the waitlist at MilitaryChildCare.com even before you register at JBLM’s Parent Central Services. You’ll manage the waitlist by checking in once a month to reconfirm your request. You’ll receive reminder and placement offer emails to help you see where you are from month to month.

If you only want to register for youth center programs or youth sports, you won’t need to register at MilitaryChildCare.com.

Register with MilitaryChildCare.com.

Register from anywhere in the world at MilitaryChildCare.com to request care at a CYS center at JBLM and get placed on the waitlist.

• Once registered, the site provides an anticipated placement time based on family priority, spaces available for specific age groups and requested location. This is only an estimate — placement times can fluctuate both down and up.

• Parents are responsible to manage the waitlist and are required to reconfirm request every 30 days.

• MilitaryChildCare.com generates all notifications — placement offers and reminders — via email.

• Once offer is extended by the site via email, parent must contact Parent Central Services by phone or in person within two business days to make an appointment to complete enrollment requirements.

• It’s important to remember that MilitaryChildCare. com is a waiting list management data system that allows you to manage your own wait list. It does not enroll you at JBLM CYS. You’ll need to go to Parent Central to register (step 2).

• Contact information for home and work.

• Two local emergency contacts.

• Official shot record from your physician or medical facility.

• Full month of most recent LES or pay stubs or proof of full-time student.

the “Start New Registration” button to expedite registration.

• All paperwork must be completed prior to the child’s enrollment.

• Registration appointments are recommended by not required.

• Public computers are available at Parent Central Services and staff is available to assist with MilitaryChildCare.com registration and WebTrac preregistration.

• If you’re enrolled at Parent Central prior to being offered a child care space, you can start care right away once you’re offered a space from MilitaryChildCare.com.*
