Fired Into Creativity
Inside the Arts & Crafts Center at Joint Base LewisMcChord, a warm hum of creativity fills the air. Paint-splattered brushes, worn and loved by adults and children through multiple masterpieces, sit in jars ready to be used. Pale, unfinished ceramics line glass cases and shelves, waiting to be transformed in the kiln into keepsakes that can be passed down for years to come. Jars of glaze and samples glitter like jewels on the shelves. Even for those unfamiliar with these mediums, the Arts & Crafts Center invites you to sit down, let go of your worries and just create. For Service Members and their families, this place isn’t anything like those bigbox craft stores – it’s a refuge, a classroom and a bridge between creativity and resilience.
The Arts & Crafts Center is home to many brilliant mediums. Everyone from enthusiastic military spouses to professionals trained in various fine arts make up the staff, all eager to help you find the perfect outlet for self-expression or relaxation. That might mean learning how to create your own journal through bookbinding or simply breaking out acrylic paint and connecting with your inner Bob Ross.
Still, one of the biggest allures of JBLM’s Arts & Crafts Center is its thriving ceramics workshop, which has grown into one of the most popular outlets for artistic expression on base. Participants can choose from a wide variety of ready-to-paint pottery pieces – anything from mugs and bowls to larger statement pieces like casserole dishes and pie plates. After glazing their pieces, patrons leave them in the hands of skilled staff members, who fire them in the kilns. The finished products emerge glossy, durable and one-of-a-kind – perfect for holiday entertain -
Creativity
ing or gifting to loved ones.
A Hands-On Tradition
Ceramics have a long and storied history, with roots stretching back to ancient civilizations. From origins in China to Native communities, the traditions of creating and glazing stoneware have stood the test of time due to the durability and utility of the craft. Beyond practicality, the decorative quality of these pieces has meant moments of human history have been immortal -
ized through this medium. Even the most mundane pieces are a link between past and present – a reminder that craftsmanship and creativity endure, even in times of change. And in military life, times of change are constant.
Inside the Arts & Crafts Center, you can choose from affordable projects to take on. The shelves are stocked with glazes in dozens of colors – shimmering blues reminiscent of winter nights,

earthy browns that nod to autumn harvests and deep greens that mirror the evergreen forests that make the Pacific Northwest so special to those living on JBLM. Staff members use their training and vendor guides to help people decide on techniques and color combinations to achieve a desired effect. What makes the process almost magical is that the glazes often look entirely different than what the kiln produces – and even that result may vary depending on the firing temperature. Dull grays might emerge as vibrant magentas, while murky browns may become cobalt blue. Gritty glazes filled with chunks of glass go into the kiln and come out with blossoms of color with hardly any effort on the artist’s part. With the guidance of the Arts & Crafts staff, you’re free to experiment and be surprised by the outcome. This unpredictability is part of what keeps families coming back. For military children, it can feel like a science experiment and an art project rolled into one as they learn what 1,800 degrees Fahren heit does to their creations. For adults, it’s a chance to slow down, immerse themselves in the process and create something lasting.
Functional Art for the Holidays
While mugs, bowls and whimsical
gnomes are popular year-round, the fall and winter seasons bring a surge of interest in pieces with a culinary twist. Casserole dishes, pie plates and serving trays are among the most popular options to impress dinner guests or present as heartfelt gifts. Many families find joy in preparing holiday meals in pieces they designed themselves. A glazed pie plate in autumnal hues might hold pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dinner, while a casserole dish in Seahawks colors might be just the thing for a sports fan’s holiday table. The customizability is endless, offering affordable, handmade options with personal touches that store-bought products can’t replicate. Each brushstroke carries meaning, especially for military families far from home or frequently on the move, transforming a simple
ceramic into a keepsake.
Resilience Through Art
Beyond the artistic and practical aspects, the ceramics program plays a vital role in supporting the resiliency and morale of Service Members and their families.
Military life often comes with long deployments, unpredictable schedules and frequent moves. For Service Members, it’s easy to slip into the mindset that these creative outlets aren’t open to them or that it won’t help with stress relief. However, studies show that art programs are valuable for
mental health and stress management.
JBLM Arts & Crafts participates in a program that provides free art kits for service members, ranging from leatherworking to cross-stitch. These kits are a great way to take your mind off work and maybe pick up a new hobby. The facility also hosts group classes and sessions, building camaraderie among participants. Units and squadrons can schedule workshops as team-building exercises, while spouse and community clubs, parents and other community groups can gather for ceramics or other classes to socialize and create together. Continued on next page
A Creative Hub
While I am a personal fan of the undiscovered wonders of ceramics and the fiery allure of the kiln, Arts and Crafts has so much to offer. Woodworking, framing, engraving and other visual arts programs give you a chance to broaden your horizons and commission or create something special for yourself or your friends and family. These programs reflect a broader commitment to supporting quality of life on base. They provide affordable, accessible resources that military families might not otherwise have. In a world that sometimes overlooks the benefits of art programming, it’s easy to miss exactly how beneficial facilities like this are to communities. It is truly special that we have access to these programs here on JBLM. When Service Members move on, they’ll
always be able to cherish the engraved plaque of Washington state, the custom picture frame showcasing the unit that deployed together or a mug decorated by a child that becomes a parent’s favorite morning coffee cup. These objects become touchstones of memory, resilience and creativity. They are timeless.
The Arts & Crafts Center is more than just a facility. It’s a place where community and creativity intersect, where tradition meets innovation and where Service Members and their families find strength in art. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy their services during your time at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, especially this holiday season. Make your masterpiece today – and watch it stand the test of time.

When the skies turn gray and the chill sets in at JBLM, nothing lifts spirits quite like gathering around the table. Food
menu was crafted with a simple but thoughtful inspiration: What dishes feel rooted in the essence of the season yet remain craveable any time of year? The centerpiece – balsamicfig chicken thighs – balances sweet and tangy notes that recall crisp autumn evenings. A spiced apple-rum empanada follows, offering cozy flavors wrapped in flaky pastry. To finish, a fall sangria sparkles with cider, cinnamon and ginger, each sip bringing warmth to gray Pacific Northwest days.
Together, the recipes tell a story of familiar comfort with fresh twists—seasonal flavors designed to surprise, delight and bring people closer. Whether shared with family, friends or that special someone, this menu is as versatile as it is memorable, making it a perfect addition to your holiday table.

the month of October, Better Opportunities for Single Service Members transforms familiar spaces into twisting, haunted mazes full of surprises, jump scares, and eerie ambiance.
The labyrinth is more than just a haunted house – it’s a showcase of our service member volunteers’ endless ingenuity and creativity. Volunteers come together to help with construction, acting and design, contributing to a shared experience that is as much about camaraderie as it is about the scares. For attendees, it’s an opportunity to laugh, scream and bond with friends in a safe, festive environment. And for families, BOSS has thought of you too! Every year they also offer a “not so scary” option so the kids can get in on the fun as well. And if the Labyrinth of Horrors sounds like something you might be excited to help with, don’t hesitate to get involved by signing up as a volunteer. You can help build, design and perform in the labyrinth – who wouldn’t want a chance to terrify their friends! To contact BOSS, call 253-967-5636.
If frights aren’t your style, don’t worry. JBLM still offers plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween and autumn more gently. Costume contests, seasonal movie nights, library events and craft workshops at Arts & Crafts provide
alternatives that are family-friendly while still embracing the playful spirit of the season.
While JBLM offers plenty of activities right on post, the surrounding communities of the South Sound also celebrate fall with their own traditions. Service Members and families are encouraged to exolore the area, which not only supports local communities and businesses, but also provides them with a deeper connection to the Pacific Northwest lifestyle.

And at JBLM, MWR is ensuring that every member of the community has the chance to engage, experience and enjoy life to the fullest.

The Instructors Who Move JBLM

For many people, the new year comes with the familiar promise of resolutions.
“This year, I’ll get fit. I’ll try that new class. I’ll finally stick to a routine.” At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, those goals aren’t just loft wishes scribbled in a journal – and they’re not relegated to the beginning of a new year. They are opportunities are waiting in the form of dynamic group fitness classes designed for both Service Members and their families.
JBLM’s thriving Sports, Fitness and Aquatics program runs a total of seven fitness centers, with four currently offering classes that vary from the mindful calm of yoga to invigorating cardio kickboxing. You can always count on MWR to provide programs that combine expert instruction, community support and a chance to reconnect with fitness in ways that feel motivating and sustainable.
And while January’s Fitness Resolution Fair is a cornerstone event for introducing our classes and instructors, the lineup of offerings
is designed to help people stay engaged all year-round.
360 Fitness Goals
Fall and winter are critical months for maintaining physical readiness, especially for active-duty Service Members. Between unpredictable Pacific Northwest weather, holiday schedules and long duty days, it’s easy for physical training to slip into a routine that feels stale. This applies to family members as well, especially when it can feel confusing to figure out where to start or pick up where you left off in concerns to your physical fitness journey. Group classes help break up the confusion and monotony, making it possible to invest in your own wellness and stay active.
The team that makes up our group fitness instructors is just as diverse as the community they serve.

Instructor
Gema, U.S. Air Force Spouse Ret.
Class: Zumba
Gema has been a Zumba instructor since 2020, during the COVID lockdowns. She loves to dance and share that enjoyment with her students. Her energy and confidence are contagious, inspiring a loyal following. “Just try, and I will show you that you will have fun,” Gema says. “You gotta try, and you will feel better for it.”
If your class was a genre of music, it would be: Latin club – high tempo and high energy, just like me!
Rhachel, U.S. Army Spouse, Ret.
Class: HIIT, Strong Nation and Zumba Rhachel was inspired by fellow instructor Annie. “Some people change the world, and some leaders change the people who change the world,” she says. Rhachel leads by example and encourages participants to try different classes until they find the one that fits best.
If your class was a genre of music, it would be: Island music – it’s a vibe!
Susan, U.S. Army, Ret.
Class: Zumba
Susan is inspired by the people who come to the gym every day. Everyone has had a first class or first lesson, and it’s okay to be afraid to start something new. What matters is what you do after that. Susan is the epitome of energy, creating a space where mistakes aren’t bad. “Yoda said it best…Do or do not, there is no try,” she says.
If your class was a genre of music, it would be: Latin music, but also Hip Hop, K-pop and anything with a beat to get you moving.
Spotlights
Maxine, U.S. Air Force Spouse
Class: Barre and Pilates
Maxine has always had a passion for health and wellness. She has been practicing barre for five years and is certified in Barre, Pilates, TRX, SurgeFit (HIIT), and as a Chronic Disease Educator, teaching fitness for fall prevention and cancer patients. She loves the military community for its sense of resilience and camaraderie. Her advice: introduce yourself to your fitness instructors – they love sharing their passion, especially with newcomers!
If your class was a genre of music, it would be: Pop – or anything by Pitbull!
We have a diverse and talented group of instructors that keeps JBLM’s fitness community energized and inspired. In addition to the above instructors, we have even more amazing individuals lending their expertise to our community. Rino, a Grandmaster of Necopa-Balintawak Eskrima, brings decades of martial arts expertise and a passion for helping students of all ages and backgrounds master the art of stick fighting. Caitlin, a U.S. Army veteran and ACSM-certified strength trainer, combines her military experience and powerlifting knowledge to build confidence, proper form and personal strength in every participant. Annie, a longtime Zumba instructor, motivates students with high-energy Latin beats and a focus on mental as well as physical transformation, while Emily, a civilian volunteer, encourages
fun and healthy living in her Cardio Strength classes, helping students enjoy the journey rather than stress over numbers. Birgit, a former military spouse, has been teaching Yoga Flow for more than 10 years, guiding students in mindfulness, balance and stress relief. Ivy, a yoga and Yoga Sculpt instructor, shares the transformative power of mindfulness in her classes, inspiring participants to push past their limits with humor and encouragement. Finally, Andrew, a certified TRX, Spin and Strength Training instructor, motivates participants through discipline, old-school music and a focus on personal fitness journeys. Together, these instructors reflect the dedication, energy and community spirit that make JBLM’s group fitness programs a hub for connection, wellness and fun. Continued on next page
The Social Factor
One of the biggest draws of JBLM’s group fitness classes is the social connection. Many participants admit they might not push themselves as hard alone, but the energy of being in a class alongside others creates accountability and motivation. Military spouses, in particular, often cite the classes as a way to build friendships in what can otherwise feel like an isolating environment. If you haven't had a chance to get out and meet people, letting go of your inhibitions and having fun in your Zumba class is a great way to meet people and create lasting relationships.
That sense of belonging is no accident. Instructors like Annie, Emily and Ivy infuse their classes with team-oriented drills, partner exercises and group challenges, encouraging camaraderie while helping participants move toward their fitness goals. Caitlin and Andrew bring discipline and structured workouts, while Rino, Birgit and other instructors emphasize mindfulness, balance and skill development. Together, these instructors reflect the dedication, energy and community spirit that define JBLM’s fitness culture.
Setting Resolutions That Last
At JBLM, fitness resolutions aren’t limited to Jan. 1 – they’re about building sustainable habits throughout the year. Staff and instructors encourage participants to focus on progress, not perfection. Maybe your resolution isn’t to run a marathon. Maybe it’s to make it to two classes a week or to do something you've never done before, like learn Stick Fighting! With year-round classes, supportive instructors, and peers who motivate and cheer each other on, service members, spouses and family members have everything they need to stay active, connected and committed to their personal goals.
Looking Ahead: Changes and Resolution
With the new year and the Fitness Resolution Fair approaching in January, JBLM is gearing up to welcome both longtime participants and newcomers eager to kick off the new year strong. Not sure where to start? Try a variety of classes until you find the one that clicks—the right instructor, workout style, and community make all the difference.

Snow Problem
Your Guide to Winter on Base
Winter in the Pacific Northwest is a season of striking landscapes, misty mornings, and the insatiably need to stay as cozy as possible. For newcomers to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, it can also bring a few unexpected surprises. While there is no shortage a green year-round in Eastern Washington, the second most common color you will see during winter is gray. From rainsoaked streets to icy mountain passes, shorter days and the onset of winter blues, the PNW winter requires a little preparation and mindfulness. MWR is here to help families, service members and newcomers navigate the season safely while they enjoy all forms of morale and recreation that support mental wellness.
Understanding the Pacific Northwest Winter
If you’re new to the PNW, it’s important to recognize that winter here looks different than other parts of the country. While snow may be rare on JBLM itself, the surrounding lowland receives steady rainfall, and mountain passes can quickly become treacherous with
snow or ice. Temperatures usually range from the mid-30s to low 40s, but damp conditions and wind can make it feel colder. Be sure to observe some the safety precautions listed above to make sure you are fully prepared for getting out and having fun this winter.
Seasonal Affective Disorder and Mental Health Awareness
Winter in the PNW can be more than just wet and cold – it can affect mental health, particularly for those unaccustomed to the region’s short, gray days. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression triggered by season changes, most commonly in fall and winter. Lack of sunlight during these months can also result in a deficiency of vitamin D, also greatly affecting mood and disposition. Its important to monitor your health and stay mindful of your body and mind’s needs, especially considering that PNW residents experience these disorders at a higher rate than the national average.
The good news is, that MWR provides ways to keep yourself healthy and maintain your
Driving Tips
• Slow Down: Wet and icy roads demand lower speeds. Black ice, especially on bridges and shaded areas, can be hazardous.
• Increase Following Distances: Give yourself plenty of space to stop safely.
• Avoid sudden Movements: Abrupt steering, braking or accelerating can lead to skidding.
Checking Conditions
• Mountain Passes: If you plan trips to the Cascades, check Washington State Department of Transportation updates before departure.
• Base Roads: Call JBLM’s Operations Center at 253-967-1733 for current road conditions.
• Weather Apps & Alters: Sign up for emergency alerts and keep a weather app handy for realtime notifications.
If you need a place to winterize your vehicle or some advice on how to best care for your automotives throughout the seasons, visit the MWR Auto Skills Center. For a full price list of services, visit their website or call 253-982-7226 for an appointment.
mental wellness. Here are some strategies to fight off those winter blues and places you can do that right on base.
1. Maximize Sunlight Exposure: Morning walks or daylight hikes are especially helpful, and Outdoor Recreation has hikes throughout the season that take all the stress out of planning and travel!
2. Stay Active: Physical activity can elevate mood and energy. MWR supports you with seven fitness centers on the installation, with three of those offering 24/7 access.
3. Social Engagement: Maintaining social connections prevents isolation. Look for events hosted by MWR!
4. Professional Support: Behavioral health services, counseling or therapy can provide additional support if symptoms persist. JBLM offers multiple programs and services for supporting mental health during winter such as Behavioral Health Services at Madigan Army Medical Center and McChord Field, the Family Advocacy Program, Chaplain Services and other community programs.
