by Patti Jeffrey

T

he frenzy of media tours has wound down, the escorted VIPs have made their rounds, myriad photographs and videos have been seen and stored — and finally the Warrior Zone is settling down to its fundamental mission.

“We can now more fully focus on providing Service members and civilians a place to get out, kick back, relax and socialize,” says Elizabeth Thunstedt, Warrior Zone manager. “It’s the best alternative we can think of to staying by yourself in your dorm or barracks. And it’s free!” If socializing could be seen at its best, then the Warrior Zone at Lewis North is doing its job. According to Thunstedt, most nights are packed with adults mingling in the sports lounge or on the heated covered patio, shooting pool, playing shuffleboard, listening to music videos, vying with others in gaming competitions or watching movies in the theater. Any social barriers outside the walls fall away as off-duty Soldiers, Airmen and civilians find the same interests in sports teams, games, movies and other recreation.

Food and games are ready-made parties The Warrior Zone is more than a year old now, and it’s finding overwhelming success pairing recreation and food for parties.

For instance, the recent Kentucky Derby/Cinco de Mayo/UFC party provided patrons a good time all day and evening, and the first Steak Night on the Patio was such a hit that all the steaks sold out before the evening was done. “It’s a really successful marriage of eating, drinking and having fun,” Thunstedt says. “We’ve made parties not only out of televised sports but also out of gaming tournaments with other Army, Navy and Air Force rec centers.” The food that’s offered at patio parties and sports parties is different than the regular menu, according to Rene Ockimey, food manager. She says she also likes to introduce new specials, such as wraps and the new BOSS sandwich, and then adds them to the menu if they prove popular. “I like to keep the menu fresh to keep customers’ interest,” says Ockimey. Hint: You can look forward to more patio parties with barbecued meats or seafood, and come out for lunch on the patio every Wednesday with off-menu specials.

Drop by any night for planned activities The Warrior Zone plans activities six days a week (plus Sundays when football season starts). Mondays are open mic nights on the patio, Tuesdays are pool tournaments, Wednesdays are Texas Hold ‘Em nights, Thursdays are gaming, Fridays are doubles pool tournaments and Saturdays are gam-

ing tournaments. All start at 6:30 p.m., except the Saturday tourneys, which start at 2 p.m. Sign-ups are a half-hour before the event. New events are being introduced continually, such as the new open mic nights and doubles pool tournaments. To find the latest, check out their updates at facebook.com/JBLMWarriorZone. Also see page 8 for more August parties. “If there’s one thing we’d love to keep seeing happen, it’s for Service members to keep on reaching out, getting involved, taking a break from their day, getting a healthy meal and mixing it up with others at the Warrior Zone,” Thunstedt says. If that’s the case, the Warrior Zone’s mission is being accomplished — hooah!

Volunteer for BOSS Better Opportunities for Single Service members volunteers give back to their community. Through recreational events, helping with other organizations and seasonal projects, BOSS volunteers help improve the quality of life for many in the JBLM community. Recognized Armywide for its success, the JBLM BOSS program has been renamed to include the Airmen of McChord Field and is the first in the Army to include members serving in other military branches. The Warrior Zone is BOSS headquarters with both a Soldier and an Airman rep. Volunteer your time by calling the BOSS program at 253-967-5636.

Whatever you want, the WZ has it all — from patio parties and barbecues on the covered patio with overhead TVs to weekly Texas Hold ‘Em and pool tourneys, plus all the gaming, movies and eating you can stuff in on your off-duty hours. a calm and connected parent. Plus, get tips and tricks to strengthen your marriage and opportunities to spend quality time with your new bundle of joy.

Scream-Free Parent Event Over coffee and pastries Thursday, Aug. 15, learn the five truths every parent needs to know. Scream-Free Parenting is the principle-based approach that’s inspiring parents everywhere to truly revolutionize their Families. Moving beyond many of the child-centered, technique-based approaches, the Scream-Free way compels you to focus on yourself, grow yourself up and calm yourself down. Based on the national best-seller “Scream-Free Parenting,” the message has appeared regularly on nationally syndicated TV shows. Despite all of the challenges we face every day, Scream-Free teaches us that by staying both calm and connected with your kids, you begin to operate less out of your deepest fears and more out of your highest principles, revolutionizing your relationships in the process.

This event is from 9–11 a.m. at the North Fort Chapel, and free child care is available. Registration is required; call 253-967-5901. The first 100 attendees will receive a free book.

Make your marriage stronger Scream-Free Marriage introduces new concepts about marriage, teaching couples how to embrace their separate selves as a profound vehicle for strengthening a marriage. This class is discussed during eight sessions — Thursdays between Aug. 8 and Sept. 26 from noon–1:30 p.m. Don’t let your busy schedules keep you from committing to this opportunity; if you miss a class you can catch up with a workbook and book that are provided. Call 253-967-5901 to register or for more information. Bring your lunch to

2013A N. 3rd St., Room 102 and enhance your marriage.

Children’s Groups Ongoing support programs are offered for military children to interact and play with peers while parents connect. These drop-in groups don’t require registration. Infant Play Group provides a laidback atmosphere for parents and infants to begin socializing; held Thursdays at the Raindrops & Rainbows Play and Child Center at 1 p.m. Play Morning is a music-based group for children (to age 5) to sing, dance and play musical instruments. Play Morning is held Fridays at Raindrops & Rainbows Parent and Child Play Center from 10–11 a.m. and the Escape Zone from 10:30–11:30 a.m.

cam artists defraud millions of people each year. Using phone, email, postal mail and the Internet, they trick people into sending money or giving out personal information. Service members are attractive targets for consumer predators. They know you’re required to maintain good finances. You’re easy to find, so lenders are confident they can collect debts you owe. Your military pay represents a steady income that could be garnished. Military Families often start young, leading to big money management decisions by first-time decisionmakers. Deployments, change of duty stations and emergencies may lead to unplanned and unique financial difficulties without adequate resources to resolve them. Your loyalty to your service leads marketers to tie their pitches to the military, a strategy called “affinity marketing.” Here are few steps from the Federal Trade Commission that can help you avoid fraud: 1 Wiring money is like sending cash — once it’s gone, you can’t get it back. Con artists often insist that people wire money, especially overseas, because it’s nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or trace the money. Don’t wire money to strangers, to sellers who insist on wire transfers for payment or to someone who claims to be a relative in an emergency. 2 Don’t send money to someone you don’t know. It’s best to do business

Savvy consumer Tip No. 2: When shopping online, stick to sites you know and trust. Consider a payment type that provides protection, like a credit card.

with sites you know and trust. If you buy items through an online auction, consider a payment option that provides protection, like a credit card. Don’t send cash or use a wire transfer. 3 Don’t respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial information, whether the message comes as an email, a phone call, a text message or an advertisement. If you get a message and are concerned about your account status, call the number on your credit or debit card or your statement. 4 Don’t agree to deposit a check from someone you don’t know and then wire money back, no matter how convincing the story. By law, banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. You’re responsible for the checks you deposit — if a check turns out to be fake, you’re responsible for paying back the bank. 5 Read your bills and monthly statements regularly — on paper and online. Scammers steal account infor-

mation and then run up charges or commit crimes in your name. If you see charges you don’t recognize, contact your bank, card issuer or other creditor immediately. 6 Remember there’s no such thing as a sure thing. If someone contacts you promoting low-risk, high-return investment opportunities, stay away. When you hear pitches that insist you act now, guarantees of big profits, promises of little or no financial risk or demands that you send cash immediately, report them to the FTC. 7 Know where an offer comes from and who you’re dealing with. Try to find a seller’s physical address (not just a P.O. Box) and phone number. Do an Internet search for the company name and website and look for negative reviews.
