What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

DEBBIE DE SPAIN is an artist, class instructor and expert customer service representative who works at the Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field (see pages 10–11).

I’m an artist who, through chance and happenstance, became part of the MWR team by way of the Arts and Crafts Center almost nine years ago. What I thought back then to be merely a job allowing me to utilize some of my creative abilities, I now know to be so much more.

MWR is an opportunity to meet people from all over the United States and the world united in their overall goals, but diverse in their individual needs: • From fulfilling someone’s desire to learn to paint or draw to “rescuing” someone who overestimated their ability to reupholster their dining room chairs.

• From instructing a Service member how to frame medals and photographs to getting the privilege of hearing the stories behind the items being featured.

• From taking a simple plate engraving order to figuring out how to mount and display some unidentifiable piece of equipment that has sentimental value.

Every need and every person I encounter bring about creative opportunities for me.

Sometimes it’s the opportunity to work with large groups of people in venues such as the annual Kids’ Fest events or monthly Wine and Canvas classes.

Other times, I get to work one-on-one with an individual participating in the amazing Resiliency Through Art program the Arts & Crafts Center offers. Whether the setting is large or intimate, every day I get the chance to share what I know and out of necessity learn something new.

As a result of my time with MWR, I’ve become more than a creative person earning a paycheck. My life has been enriched by my talented and professional co-workers, along with the dedicated military community we serve. I’m truly honored to consider myself a part of this great and evolving society of people.

Hiking with your dog How to make hikes enjoyable for everyone

By Loren Drummond, Washington Trails Association iking with a dog — and being a great dog ambassador on trail — can bring new joy to how you experience Washington’s wilderness. But it adds layers of complication and responsibility, too. Whether you’ve hiked with dogs for years or are just starting out, we’ve got hints for picking great trails and tips for ensuring your four-legged buddy stays safe and shows the best side of dogs on trail.

Choosing a hike Before choosing where you’re going to hike with your dog, take their size, age and overall fitness into account. Practically any breed of dog can hike, but they need to train as much as you do. Ease in with short hikes and minimal elevation gain.

Next, you need to be aware of where you can and can’t hike with your dog. On most state lands (state parks and Department of Natural Resources) and national forest lands, you and your dog are good to go. Washington’s national parks and a few ecologically sensitive areas — the Enchantment Lakes Basin, Mount St. Helens National Monument and some alpine areas near Mount Baker — are off-limits.

Dogs’ biology makes them more susceptible to overheating and dehydration than human hikers, so in summer, consider how much of the hike is shaded by forest canopy, and if there are creeks and lakes along the way.

Tools for success (and safety) Before hitting the trail, you’ll want to add a few items, like canine first aid supplies, to your Ten Essentials packing list. Don’t count on finding water along the trail; pack enough for the entire day.

During hunting season (which starts in August), dress your dog in bright colors (ideally hunting orange), and make absolutely certain they stay on-leash.

On many lands and trails across Washington, dogs are required to be on leash, even if they are trained for voice control. The patchwork rules can be confusing, so when you and your pup head out on a trail, it’s best to assume that leashes are required.

A leash is also your most reliable tool for keeping dogs safe on the trail. Leashes prevent overexertion injuries and can avert an accidental encounter with hazardous wildlife or situations, such as crossing a fast stream or going off a cliff.

Trail etiquette and dogs You may have the friendliest pup in the whole world, but other hikers and dogs don’t know that. Yield to other hikers, horses and bikers, pulling quietly to the side of the trail.

(It’s also a good idea to coach kids how to act around unfamiliar dogs.)

Finally, be sure to pack out or bury your dog’s waste. Even better, have your dog pack it out (don’t leave a bag of poo alongside the trail, even if you mean to pick it up on the way back).

Better together Properly hiking with your dog — taking on the additional responsibilities and risks of bringing your buddy with you — can be a bit of a challenge. But when it comes down to it, those extra burdens that make a great, safe hiking dog don’t end up feeling like burdens at all. Because your dog, an ambassador for all of their kind, does more than give dogs a good name on trail. Their enthusiasm, good nature and unapologetic ecstasy on trail will deepen both of your experiences in the outdoors.

Being your best while you discover the great outdoors

By Kaweka Stoney he Pacific Northwest has everything a lover of the outdoors could want — mountain ranges, rugged coastlines, lakes and dense forests for hikers new and experienced to set out and discover. With increased wilderness foot traffic comes an increased need for trail awareness and etiquette. Now more than ever, hikers of all levels need to be sure you’re aware of the rules for hiking safely on trails.

Learn trail etiquette and basic outdoor safety By taking the time to learn a bit more about the wonders of Mother Nature and the best way to preserve those wonders, we all can do our part to conserve and respect these incredible gems we think everyone should experience.

Hikers and backpackers should welcome the opportunity to become better outdoor enthusiasts and take pride in the fact you can confidently travel in harmony with your surroundings.

Leave alone what you find and pick up what you bring. For instance, don’t pick up and take any natural feature you find along the trail —

you might disturb rocks that could result to a rockslide. Never leave any trash on the trail — it may lure wild animals to go toward the trail and increase the risks for those coming behind you.

Hiking safely in the Pacific Northwest If you’re a beginner, it’s important to conduct some research and know what it will be like before you hike. Do whatever you can to have a full grasp of what you’ll be encountering. By researching about your trail, you’ll be able to know what kind of clothes and shoes you need to wear. Pay attention to necessary supplies you need to pack. Most important, know the amount of food and water to bring so you have extra.

For example, deciding to take a three-day hike without undergoing any cardio exercise in years is certainly not the best choice! Don’t make the same bad decision by going on a solo hike without having any experience and preparation for it. Even if you go with someone else, you must always let other people know about your destination and when they should expect your return.

Check the weather before hitting the trail When planning for hiking, it’s important to check the weather of the area where you want to hike. Knowing what the chances of rain will be and what the temperature is will help you to decide what clothes you’ll wear for your trip.

By checking the weather, it also will tell you whether it’s a good idea to go out that day. If the weather’s not that good but you still want to hike, look for a location where the weather will least impact you.

Proper dress is key for a safe hiking trip Proper hiking clothes will keep you safe if you wear the right type and combination. See to it that you dress in layers and have rain gear so you can adapt to the temperatures of the surroundings as they change. Lightweight,

waterproof jackets can be the difference between getting a little wet and having to end the hike.

Join Commander’s Cup paintball Join the fun and competition of the JBLM Commander’s Cup League Paintball Tournament. This one-day event is being held Saturday, Aug. 11 starting at 10 a.m. at the paintball field off Vancouver Road at Lewis North.

Prepare for the new school year

Good attendance equals student success

By Antoinette Walker, School Liaison Officer ost of the local school districts surrounding JBLM continue to put an emphasis on student attendance.

Attendance matters because we want students engaged all day, every day. One local school district is working on positive attendance incentives. “Here On Time” weeks, “do not” be tardy day, technology passes and spirit sticks are just a few ways the school district is working to encourage regular attendance.

According to the research, “Attendance today, Achieve tomorrow,” conducted by Attendance Works, good school attendance produces: • Elementary students who read well by the third grade.

• Middle schoolers who pass important courses.

• High schoolers who stay on track for graduation.

• College students who earn their degree.

Attendance Works also reports that too many absences — excused or unexcused — can keep students from succeeding in school and life. How many is too many? Ten percent of the school year (18 missed days or two days a month) can keep students off track.

Even more, Attendance Works reports that chronic absence is a powerful prediction of achievement because it measures the amount of instructional time a student has missed over the course of the school year. Research findings have documented the positive relationships between time and learning.

Instructional quality and other factors are important, but this finding is clear: More time spent by the student in intentional learning environment equals more learning.

A third grader at a local school said, “You have to go to school so you can get good grades so you can go to the right college to get the right job.”

EAP tip of the month Summer safety & emotional health As you enjoy this season of warmth and sun, remain mindful of physical safety and emotional wellness. Traditionally, we’ve focused our attention on 101 Days of Summer Safety Memorial Day weekend throughout the Labor Day weekend. However, we encourage you to pay close attention to your body’s response and alert system for as long as the weather dictates.

Practical tips you already may be practicing include: • Hydrate frequently throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

• Be aware of the location of community cooling centers.

• Maintain beach, pool and boat safety.

• When hiking or traveling, limit direct sunlight, wear sunglasses and protect your feet.

• When riding your bike, be sure to make eye contact with each driver.

• Never drink and drive.

Oftentimes, along with increased heat, we may experience a change of mood. According to researcher Dr. Marsha Linehan, a feeling becomes a mood after it has remained unchanged for approximately 10 minutes. If happiness and joy is the response you experience, great — enjoy it! If you notice agitation or frustration, be sure to tune in to your body’s emotional warning signs.

See Museum of Glass Mobile Hot Shop The Mobile Hot Shop from Museum of Glass will be at McChord Library Thursday, Aug. 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2–5 p.m.

This fully equipped glassblowing studio will spend the day on base giving those who cannot make the trip to the museum a unique opportunity to learn more about the science and process of glassmaking by seeing the glassblowing process first-hand.

Get job training with Microsoft Military Program Staff members from the Pierce County Public Library are at McChord and Grandstaff libraries the fourth Wednesday of each month at noon to explain the benefits of the Microsoft Military Program.

Pierce County Library staff members are also available from 11 a.m. to noon and 12:30–1:30 p.m. to answer individual questions. Once you enroll in this free program, you can take Microsoft certification tests for the office specialist and technical assistant certifications. Tests are free and study materials are available.
