What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate.

Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

Since I can remember, MWR has been a part of my life. My mom was an active duty Army Service member and my dad was in civil service. Growing up an “Army brat,” there were MWR services at all our duty stations on the mainland (Fort Gordon, Ga.; Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Huachuca, Ariz.), overseas (Karlsruhe, Germany; Camp Zama, Japan) and even back home on Guam. There were child care services, youth activities and lots of Family events that we participated in with MWR. My favorite experiences were travel and leisure opportunities while overseas. While stationed in Germany, we were able to go sightseeing on English-speaking tours with MWR that included the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden. Later, while stationed in Japan, we went on MWR-sponsored trips to Tokyo’s Disneyland and Roppongi. We were fortunate to have MWR experiences because the rates for these adventures were within our budget.

As an adult and Service member, I appreciate MWR for programs available to my Family and me. My husband has been a Seahawks fan since he was a kid and, when we first moved to JBLM, we were blessed to afford tickets to games through MWR! We also were able to attend a Mariners game, and our favorite annual event is Oktoberfest that we try to attend every year (if I’m not on duty).

Last year, we took our daughter to the Parent-Daughter Dance and we had an amazing time! Throughout the year, MWR offers a wide variety of services and events that are free or affordable for all Service members, their Families, DOD civilians and retirees. When we’re consumed by the hustle of day-to-day work and activities, it’s great to unwind and leave the planning to MWR for the fun stuff.

What MWR means to me is “Opportunities for Memories” — Service members sharing in special moments with Family! The opportunities that MWR provide us are affordable in budget and priceless in memories!

Sharpen your swing with golf pro

By Patti Jeffrey eet John Eisentrout, resident pro at JBLM golf courses. He’s at your service to help you improve your game.

John became a golf pro in 2011 and has played on the NGA (Hooters), National Pro, Mackenzie, Golden State and Gateway and Web.com tours.

“Golf is a variable and demanding sport to master,” John says. “You can’t control what happens a lot of the time, so what I want to do with my students is make it fun and allow them to master little successes before I take them further down the road. Success makes students want to come back, and if I can get them hooked on golf, that’s my success.”

John first became hooked on golf after he took The First Tee golf lessons when he was 16 years old. He found that the program taught good character development with groups of youth. From that and many other golf experiences, he knows how to instruct golfers as young as age 3 and as old as age 89.

“I’m flexible in my approach to teaching,” says John. “I interview players on what their goals are. Some only want to improve one skill because they have limited time. Others want to become better scratch players and are willing to spend as much time as they can to get to their goal.”

With kids, John focuses on making the game fun and improving athletic skills, such as hand-eye coordination and sequencing. His goal is to avoid injury through repetitive motion and to equip them with athleticism that can carry over into other sports they may experience as they grow up.

With older adults, John might focus on freeing up their bodies that may have lost flexibility so they can once again have full range of motion to successfully improve their game.

It’s about managing expectations and giving students a genuine sense of accomplishment, according to John. “For instance, 90 percent of new golfers never shoot 90 or better — if you’re a beginner and I can get you to break 90, you’re a success. I focus on playing well and developing you as a golfer.”

When John came to JBLM to teach, he was pleasantly surprised with JBLM Service member students. “I find military students easier to teach — they take instruction well and practice what I assign in between sessions,” John says. Their attitude goes well with his mission to inspire beginner golfers in a program that grows skills, builds character and increases mental toughness.

Earn Fitness Challenge points for races Have you heard of the JBLM Fitness Challenge? It’s a program for 2019 that promotes a healthy lifestyle while encouraging you to join races throughout the year by awarding points.

Whenever you sign up for a race, you can “opt in” to receive points toward prizes — the more you participate, the more prizes you earn: • Gold-level participation is 800–950 points.

• Silver-level participation is 650–799 points.

• Bronze-level participation is 500–649 points.

All participants who reach qualifying levels will be acknowledged and entered to win the grand prize at the capstone event at the Fitness Resolution Fair 2020.

These qualifying races are held Saturdays.

Each race has a set number of points: • April 6: Awareness Run 5k (100 points).

• May 11: Down & Dirty Mud Run 5k (100 points).

• July 20: Freedom Run 10-mile/5k (150 points).

• Aug. 17: Pacific Pathways Sprint Triathlon (150 points).

Robert also recently appeared with IFBB Pro Michael Spencer, Drug-Free Athletes Coalition Pro Derek Davis and Tina “the Titan” Brown at a JBLM posing clinic promoting the upcoming 2019 JBLM Bodybuilding Championship.

Get started at JBLM competition JBLM’s Bodybuilding Championship may be small compared to other shows, but it’s a perfect venue to introduce bodybuilders to the stage. “Many first-timers are ready physically but have stage fright,” Robert says. “Getting on that stage with the support of everyone, including those you’re competing with, changes your mind about how well you can do on stage.”

Participants from ages 15 to 65 competed in last year’s show, proving that bodybuilding knows no age limits. The competition is also a proven stepping stone for larger competitions and turning pro. “The 2018 JBLM competition relit the fire for me to train extra hard for the North American Championships in Pittsburg, where I took first place,” says Robert. “After competing at JBLM, I felt more relaxed and calm for the finals.

“Training for my first professional show can be intimidating because it’s much more competitive,” Robert says. “But I’ve learned from all the amateur shows how to be the best version of myself. I learn something from every competition I’m in.”

By Brittany Catanzaro efore spring fever hits, learn the skills of sea kayaking through the Outdoor Recreation program. Classes are for beginners and seasoned kayakers to learn or brush up on paddling skills and rescue techniques.

Classes are held at Keeler Pool or Kimbro Pool on the third Tuesday of each month. ODR instructor Brad Hinton has been teaching kayakers for 10 years and offers outstanding experience in teaching you proper skills in kayaking and rescuing.

Evergreen State is home to numerous locations to explore our beautiful waters. We live near salt water, which grants us the opportunity to choose from numerous islands and beaches to explore.

Learn beginning to advanced skills You can sign up for five kayak skill classes.

All classes include kayaks, paddles, life vests and rescue tools.

The first class is the buddy rescue, which includes: • Effective ways to use and control the paddle.

• Proper fit and adjustment to the kayak

you’re a solo kayaker! One technique is using a paddle and rope to get back in your kayak.

Another technique is just using your body to get back in your kayak.

The third class teaches you advanced rescue techniques. You’ll master recovery techniques and muscle-memory exercises for the roll.

The fourth class covers multi-day kayak trip preparations (for example, what to bring and what to wear). This class also covers T-rescue.

The fifth class covers the Eskimo roll and focuses on perfecting your roll.

Get out with others on paddle trips

ODR provides four-day kayaking trips around the San Juan Islands. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and meet new people who have the same interests as you while strengthening your kayak skills.

The trip includes kayak gear, transportation and delicious breakfasts and dinners. Dinners include steak and salmon.

You can expect to learn about proper camp planning, tides and navigation on this trip.

On the last day, the instructor takes a back seat while students take over and use the skills they learned.

• Buddy-rescue techniques demonstrated by the instructor and practiced by the students.

• How to empty water from your kayak after it has flipped over.

The first class is important for kayakers to be able to efficiently rescue others or yourself and get back in the kayak after someone has flipped over.

The second class is learning self-rescue, which is how to properly get back into your kayak by yourself after you’ve flipped out of your kayak. This is an important class if

Constant change can build resiliency, respect for others

By Cindy Arnold, CYS marketing liaison hen reflecting on the life of a military child, the word “change” is often one of the first things that comes to my mind. My father was in the Air Force for 20 years, and I always like to say that my mother was, too — she supported him and two children during all the moves and change that occurred.

This year’s Month of the Military Child theme — “Military Kids Can!” — is exactly what every military Family learns, that military kids can: • Learn that things change and that’s OK. • Find that moving can be fun and you learn a lot each time.

• Respect diversity and difference.

• Discover that constant change builds resiliency, new friends, new schools, new — everything!

This resiliency creates tools for building your new life each time, and all of these challenges help you gain insight into who you are.

As you become an adult, you’ll find these skills that you cultivated as a child are invaluable. I know that I have.

Celebrate Month of the Military Child

By Dr. Crosby, FOCUS Project n the Families OverComing Under Stress Project, whenever we ask military children about the challenges of being in a military Family, they often say that PCS moves and their parent’s absence for trainings or deployment are the hardest aspects. However, when asking these same children about the positives of being in a military Family, these same topics are often identified. So, how is it that a PCS move or a parent’s absence can have any positives for a military child?

We know that military children develop the strength of being resilient. But what does that really mean? When military children experience a PCS move, they’re often pulled away from their friends and activities, but they also demonstrate an ability to naturally improve their social skills while making new friends in their new town.

The skill of relationship-building is often key in adulthood; military children learn how to use their relationship skills effectively by navigating new social groups and personalities. They also learn how to engage in new activities and groups, if those in which they previously participated are unavailable at their new home.

Other strengths that military children develop from PCS moves are flexibility, variety and broadened perspectives. For each move, children learn about new cities, cultures, food and even countries. They meet children from different cultural backgrounds, live in a variety of geographical locations and get opportunities to visit sites that many civilian children don’t get to see.

Additionally, when a parent is absent for an extended period of time, military children develop the strength to show up. They take on new tasks at home (taking out the trash or watching their younger sibling, for example) and show they’re able to help out the Family in several ways. When they do this, military children establish a greater sense of responsibility and independence, which help provide a strong foundation for the teenage years and adulthood. Their resilience shines through their ability to not only overcome otherwise challenging situations, but also to thrive while doing so.

With so many strengths that military children develop from the challenges they may face in military life, April’s Month of the Military Child is a great time to sit down with your children and acknowledge their strengths.

FOCUS tip of the month Take a deep breath In April, many military Families begin preparing for the end of the school year, a PCS and the transition to warmer weather. As exciting as these changes can be, they also can be stressful.

Do you and your Family members have ways to manage emotions through these transitions? They can be as simple as taking slow deep breaths in and releasing slow breaths out. In the FOCUS program, we create activities around deep breathing and other emotionregulation tools in order to strengthen Family members’ abilities to cope with change. Don’t just get by, get stronger!

EAP tip of the month National Alcohol Awareness Month Drinking too much alcohol increases an individual’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer.

During April’s Alcohol Awareness Month, JBLM Employee Assistance Program encourages you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of drinking too much.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, 50 percent of roadway fatalities are due to impaired driving; in 2017, there were 25,619 impaired driver arrests. If you or someone you love is drinking too much, here are strategies to help cut back or stop drinking: • Limit your drinking to no more than one standard drink a day for women or two standard drinks a day for men.

• Keep track of how much you drink.

• Choose a day each week when you will not drink.

• Don’t drink when you’re upset.

• Limit the amount of alcohol you keep at home.

• Avoid places where people drink a lot.

• Make a list of reasons not to drink.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

Preventing child abuse & neglect – it is your business I

t can be far too easy to see something worrisome or suspicious, like possible child abuse or neglect, and say to yourself, “Somebody else will probably take action.” It may feel awkward to respond and seem like it’s none of your business, but the safety and well-being of children is everyone’s business. It’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are able to grow up safe and healthy.

If you see a parent under stress, you can step in and offer assistance. You can offer to watch their child for a short time to give them a break or simply be a supportive listener. If you’re a parent and need a break yourself, reach out to a friend, neighbor or babysitter and arrange for someone to watch your child to allow you time for self-care. It’s normal to get frustrated from time to time, and it’s important you ask for help when you need it.

There are resources that parents can access for professional advice and support. JBLM New Parent Support Program (253-967-7409) is a great resource for expecting parents and those with children up to 4 years old. Parents with children of all ages can contact Military OneSource (1-800-342-9647) for nocost, confidential non-medical counseling. Additionally, military Families can receive Family Resiliency Training from FOCUS (253-966-6390).

If you suspect that a child is being neglected or abused, it is your business to speak up. Your action could help save a child.

If you see an unsupervised child, take immediate action. Find the child’s caregiver or call local law enforcement for help. If you witness violence or believe someone is in imminent danger, call 911 or JBLM Military Police (253-912-4442) or Washington State Child Protective Services (1-866-363-4276), available 24/7. Making a report may just save a child’s life.

We know you’re juggling a lot. We’re here to help. Support is available through Military OneSource, JBLM Directorate of Personnel and Family Readiness (253-967-7166) and the DPFR Family Advocacy Program (253-967-5901).

Over the last 15 years, residents graduating from Madigan Army Medical Center’s general surgery residency program have passed the exam for board certification on their first attempt at a nation-topping rate of 97.6 percent.

“If you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you’re in the bottom quarter of Madigan in our annual in-training exam. That’s unheard of in any program. In any other program, you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you are doing very well,” Lt. Col. (Dr.) Vance Sohn, the residency program director and chief of general surgery.

McChord Library Join Novel Navigators book club Like to discuss current books? Join the Novel Navigators book discussion group for adults that meets the second Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m.
