“Many individuals who are performing plastic surgery now do not understand the complex anatomy for aesthetics, and that can be a problem,” explained

Common reasons for this abdominal excess can include multiple pregnancies, the loss of elasticity in the skin and sudden, extreme weight loss.

The Timeless Lift is a facelift, or rhytidectomy, that can remove most of the visible signs of aging on the face and neck area. With the Timeless Lift, excess skin is removed, and the muscles lying just under the skin are tightened.

The Timeless Lift can be done as part of other cosmetic procedures, including eyelid lifts, forehead lifts and nose reshaping. Ideal candidates are age 40 to 60 with well-defined bone structure, relatively high skin elasticity and thin facial skin.

Dimple creation, also called dimpleplasty, is a new trend in cosmetic surgery, and Dr. Chang performs many Timeless Dimple procedures each month. Although women make up the majority of requests, the procedure is also popular among men, who want the “Mario Lopez” look.

Natural dimples are actually muscle defects in the cheek where skin is stuck to underlying tissue. While some dimples persist through adulthood, many fade away as a child grows up and the defect disappears due to maturation of the cheek muscle.

Dimple creation consists of making a tiny incision inside a patient’s cheek.

There are no cuts on the outside of the face. A small piece of cheek muscle is removed and the remaining muscle is attached to the underside of the skin with a dissolvable suture. The incision on the inside of the cheek leaves a permanent indentation in the skin, creating the dimple. fort bend

The Timeless Dimple is an advanced modification of the original procedure made to be more predictable. “Dimples can be more personalized,” said Dr. Chang.

he stream of bad news seems endless. The debt downgrade of the U.S., unemployment and home foreclosures, the election and now the fiscal cliff. Maybe we buy into it by listening to media outlets and think what they’re telling us is the sole truth. Maybe we only listen because it sells. Nevertheless, we’re constantly fed bad news and because of that we’re fearful when it comes to investing. The current economic state can related to a disease or illness. We have symptoms of the disease, the disease itself and a reaction to the news we’ve just been given. No one has ever had a heart attack and run a marathon days later. It takes time to recover, train and prepare for the event. Just a few short years ago, our economy had a proverbial “heart attack”.

Even though we’re still trying to recover, some think we should be at the starting line tomorrow for the gun to go off.

Currently, we are in an environment that is beneficial for all politicians. By prolonging this fiscal cliff issue, it creates more anxiety and hysteria which will ultimately result in constituents saying “just get it done.” Two years from now on the campaign trail, they can say they solved the problem. However, we can’t run our businesses or lives on cri-

America faces a long term problem that requires a long-term recovery program. In the mean time, as investors we deal with daily issues and take a shorterterm approach. The typical reaction to this “disease” is to liquidate the portfolio and go to cash. In essence, this is what I consider the bunker mentality. What people don’t realize is they’re cannibalizing their own accounts. Liquidating the portfolio is not in their best interest. Let’s look at a few examples I’ve seen. Client J had a $10 million bond portfolio ten years ago, netting the client about $700,000 in annual income. Because of where interest rates are today, this client is now only earning $350,000 on that bond portfolio. Their standard of living has been cut in half.

While this isn’t a direct result of their actions, it helps us realize the market we’re living in. Another example is that of Client L. They panicked when the market declined in 2008 and cashed out. They’ve been sitting in cash ever since, effectively earning nothing on their money. Yet they still need to live and receive monthly distributions. With interest rates near zero, this client has been consuming 4-5% of principal annually. To this day, they have not invested and are cannibalizing the

account because they aren’t earning anything on their money. The result is 15-20% decrease in their principal by being “safe.”

There is always some reason not to invest and there is always an “I told you so” story. Playing it safe in money markets and C.D.s is creating its own horror story as time goes on. Develop your investment goals and stick to them. This will help you through the unknown and uncertain times. Having no plan is equivalent to have little chance of success.

Jordan Gonsalves, an active member of Boy Scout Troop 301, has organized a family variety show as part of his Eagle Scout Project. The Rainbow Room Revue is scheduled for January 20th, 7 pm at the newly renovated Sugar Land Auditorium on Lakeview Drive in Sugar Land.

Gonsalves, a vocal major at the High School of Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, has been performing in front of audiences since second grade. Jordan said, “I have been part of several events, shows, galas and corporate events for as long as I can remember. I am so excited that I can use my talents and leadership to make my own dream come true. I have always been inspired by the parable of the talents from the Bible, and I believe that this is my time to apply it to my own life. ” Currently, Gonsalves is the director of the Imani Gospel Choir, which provides a safe and energetic environment where students can experience fellowship and share in their love of gospel music. He is also on the student council at HSPVA and an associate editor for the school’s newspaper.

Weight Loss Resolutions

A

wonderful thing happens in January every year. People commit to new fitness and weight loss programs as part of their new year’s resolution. Why is this so wonderful? It increases awareness about the importance of diet and exercise and improves the health of those involved. Unfortunately, most people fall off of the proverbial wagon after the first month or two.

The Problem with Traditional Weight Loss Programs The problem with many weight loss systems is that they cater to the masses without considering individual need.

They use a “one size fits all” approach.

This approach works for some but leaves many to ponder why the weight will not come off the way it used to.

Most diet plans are based on Calorie consumption. Not enough thought is given to the quality of the Calories being consumed. For example, there are a number of companies that provide Calorie controlled meals. This concept works well for portion control; however, the quality of the food being used is poor and as the age old adage goes – “You are what you eat.” Chemicals, radiated foods, ultra pasteurization, processing, lack of nutrient density, genetically modified foods, cloned meats, unidentified food intolerances, etc. all taint many of these so called “healthy foods”. Many of these factors can cause internal inflammation when ingested leading to an increased risk for cancer, heart dis-

ease, diabetes, weight gain and more.

As if that were not bad enough, weight loss is not just about Calories. The concept of the Calorie is based on the amount of heat a food generates when it is burned in a sealed chamber. Although Calorie estimation can be useful, it does not take into consideration the affect that food can have on hormone levels. To make things even more confusing, different foods can affect people’s hormones differently. For example, some people do not tolerate carbohydrates very well. For these individuals, carbs cause excessive insulin production which in turn tells the body to store fat.

This can happen even if the individual is not “over eating” on Calories.

Exercise Programs Exercise is also a critical and key component for successful weight loss.

The common perception is that performing cardiovascular exercise is enough to help a person with weight loss. This concept is not entirely true. Cardio is over rated as a form of exercise. Although it helps tone blood vessels, it does very little for muscle tone. The key to weight loss with exercise programs is achieving adequate lean muscle mass. I am not talking about working out with weights to become Herculean. Many fear that this will happen, but it is just not true.

The fact of the matter is that muscle utilizes energy. The more tone your muscles, the more energy your body expends while at rest. Additionally, maintaining solid muscle tone as we age has

been shown to increase the life span.

A common problem with exercise is time. People typically do not want to take an hour or more daily to go to a gym and exercise. I recommend The ten minute rule. Everyone has at least ten minutes to give to exercise. The key to this rule is that the exercise must be intense. Try the following exercises: push-ups, pull ups, lunges, and squats. Perform two sets of each exercise within a ten minute time frame. Don’t worry if you can’t perform a lot of repetitions of these exercises when you first get started. The key will be consistency over time. If you do it daily your body will get stronger and build lean muscle mass. As this happens you will notice your clothes fitting better, your energy increasing, your sleep improving, etc. Do not weigh yourself on a scale. As you lose fat, you will gain muscle. Therefore, your weight may not fluctuate as much as you want it to. Weight is not as important as body composition.

Once Again, Common Sense Applies People are different and unique. No one diet is right for everyone. The same can be said for exercise. No one program is right for everyone. If you are having problems with weight loss, know what your options are. You might not be responding for a number of different reasons. Specialized genetic and laboratory testing can help you identify what type of diet and exercise program will work better for you. Put the odds in your favor before you get frustrated with a lack of progress.

ongtime Fort Bend residents and philanthropists Robert C. (Bob) and Carole Brown were recently honored as Fort Bend Rotary’s 2012 Humanitarians of the Year. At an event benefitting the Fort Bend Rotary charities, the Browns were toasted by friends and family members including daughters Jody Noirot and Trudy Onofrey and Herb and Emelia Appel.

For over thirty years, the name Brown has been synonymous with giving in Fort Bend with virtually every community service organization. A businessman in the communications industry for a number of years, Bob has been active in service on several community boards including Child Advocates, Fort Bend Corps, Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Parks Youth Ranch and Sugar Land Heritage Foundation.

He is currently Chairman of the Board of the Greater Fort Bend EDC. Carol has devoted several years to the Fort Bend community serving as board members of organizations including the Fort Bend Republication Women’s Club, the American Heart Association and The Women’s Center. She has worked on many ground-breaking fundraising events benefiting Texas War on Drugs, part of former First Lady Nancy Regan’s “Just Say No” drug awareness initiative, along with Operation Rainbow and The Oaks at Rio Bend.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

T

he three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug.

Approached out of the blue by the Wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 Dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield.

Their journey will take them into the Wild, through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs and deadly Wargs, as well as a mysterious and sinister figure known only as the Necromancer.

One of the special aspects of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey are the reunion of characters that take place. Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, Christopher Lee as Sauman, Hugo weaving as Elrond and an extremely brief cameo by Elijah Wood as Frodo. It’s also necessary to add

William Kircher as Bifur, Graham McTavish as Dwalin, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, James Nesbitt as Bofur and John Callen as Oin.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the Goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even

that Andy Serkis once again works his on screen brilliance as Gollum. The characters are all entrenched in their fandom and once again, the on screen chemistry is outstanding. Journey contains a spectacular amount of special effects, and the fantasy levels are at an all-time high. The action sequences are certain to keep even the most ardent viewers on the edge of their seats.

One of the few negatives in the film comes from the writing. Peppered throughout the film are a number of cliché one liners that, although intended to be funny, are simply not. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of another series of three films, and with the first installment, Peter Jackson and his team are off to a fine start.

Focus CareS The Kazmierczak’s: Giving Back Together

J

erry and Ginny Kazmierczak can trace their volunteering efforts all the way through their 39-year marriage when Ginny volunteered at the Cancer Hospital in Buffalo before their kids were born, through Parent Teacher Associations and Boy Scouts, and into their retirement.

“I guess you could say that as long as we’ve been married, we’ve always done something, either through community organizations or something through our church,” said Jerry, who volunteers as the treasurer for Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.

In addition to Habitat, where Ginny is a worksite volunteer, the Kazmierczaks are also involved with St. Laurence Church, where they help prepare engaged couples for marriage, volunteer with the music ministry, and contribute to any other “opportunities that pop up.”

“Faith is really what it’s all based on,” said Jerry. “We believe that God put us here to do more than just go out and have a good time. There’s a lot more to life than that. We know that Jesus told us many different times in the Bible, and in many different ways, that you need to help the little guy, you need to help your fellow

man. And we believe that sincerely.”

Ginny is also on the Board of Directors at Wellsprings Village, a program that houses and educations homeless and abused women. “At any given time there are probably 40 to 48 women living in the village. They basically get to turn their life around and go out and live successfully.”

While Jerry acknowledged that there is “so much need” when it comes to non-profit organizations, he said they were drawn to Habitat and Wellsprings Village because they aren’t “giveaway programs.”

“In both cases, you’re helping people help themselves,” he said. “In Well-

springs Village, you provide the women with the education and the training to pull themselves up, and under Habitat you they work alongside families to build them homes.”

“You’re taking someone in a position where they make almost enough money to make it but not quite enough, and you give them just a little of help to get them up above that threshold so they can take care of their family on their own,” Jerry said.

Although they both agree that their schedules can get hectic – Jerry volunteers between 20 and 30 hours a week, and Ginny volunteers about 12 hours a week for Wellsprings Village — Ginny said they were “blessed” to have a “good, solid marriage” and noted that it helps that they “enjoy working together.”

“It’s truly faith based, it’s what God put us on this earth to do, and it’s part of our marriage,” said Jerry.

Genny Li: Dancing Her Way to the Top

G

enny Li, a sophomore at Dulles High School, is full of grace and poise. She is an artistically inclined young lady who excels in both dance and music. In addition, Genny is an honor student who spends her free time volunteering with various organizations.

Genny’s favorite hobby is dancing. She has been dancing since the age of six at Golden Peacock Dance School. At first, Genny studied ballet and Chinese classical dancing. Now, Genny also takes modern classes. “I like all types of dance,” said Genny.

“Modern, ballet and Chinese classical dancing are all different in their moves and techniques, but I like the differing styles because they allow you to express yourself in unique ways.”

As one of the advanced students at the Dance School, Genny attends dance competitions. During the last competition season, Genny won many awards for her modern solo, “I Want to Dance,” as well as for her Chinese folkloric dance, “Prairie Dream.” At the Showstopper American Dance Championships in Houston in April, Genny won first place platinum in the open category, first place double platinum in the contemporary category and first overall top solo in the senior division. Due to her high rankings at this contest, Genny was invited to the Showstopper Finals in Galveston over the summer. At this contest, Genny claimed the title of overall top score in the solo senior division. As one of the youngest in her division, it was an honor and wonderful accomplishment for Genny to outscore her older competitors.

During the Stageone National Finals, Genny won first place in the modern category for her modern solo, first place in the open category for her Chinese folkloric dance and first place overall top solo in the teen division. For her high scores, Genny receives many trophies and plaques to commemorate her victories.

Genny’s passion and interest in her solos play a crucial role in her success at the competitions. She learned her modern routine in only three days during the summer, but continued to perfect it until competition season in the spring. “The hardest part of the dance was all of the leg lifts,” said Genny. “However, I worked on perfecting the dance moves, and then I was really able to express my emotions through my movements.” The piece “Prairie Dream” was a Mongolian Dance that involved many shoulder and hand movements that are characteristic of the Mongolian style. Genny describes the dance as very peaceful with pretty music.

The music that Genny dances to is very important to her since she is a musician. Genny has played piano since she was five years old and began playing the clarinet in sixth grade. She is currently a member of the Dulles High School marching band.

Between band and dance practices, Genny is extremely busy, but she makes her schoolwork a priority. She is an honor roll student and enrolled in the prestigious Math and Science Academy at Dulles.

Genny is not just a math and science whiz, she is also interested in the Spanish language and is member of Spanish Honor Society. Through this organization, Genny volunteers her time and talents to help elementary school students, who speak Spanish, with their schoolwork. Genny is also a member of YES and volunteers with various organizations to receive service hours.

Due to her skills in dance, music and academics, Genny is a multi-talented young lady. As only a sophomore, Genny has been named a top soloist in the nation and won a national dance title. Keep up the great work Genny. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Jody Noirot has joined the leadership team of AccessHealth (formerly Fort Bend Family Health Center), as the Chief Operating Officer for the organization. “We are extremely pleased to have someone with the knowledge and experience that Ms. Noirot will bring to AccessHealth. We are very fortunate to have her as a member of our team,” said Carol Edwards, Chief Executive Officer.

Noirot is an experienced healthcare executive with over 15 years in healthcare administration. She has served various organizations as an Administrator, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer. Her most recent position was Senior Vice President/Administrator of OakBend Medical Center in Richmond, Texas, where she was instrumental in expanding several clinical programs, opening off-site services and the planning and operational opening of the second hospital campus. Her expertise is in healthcare program planning and implementation, project management, and the development of organizational patient satisfaction and clinical quality improvement initiatives.

Noirot has served on the Nursing Program Advisory Board for the University of Houston, Sugar Land Nursing Program and is a charter member of the University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing Honor Society. She is a past Board Member of the ARC of Fort Bend County and Advisory Board Member of the Mamie George Community Center.

T

he all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS proves once and for all that this is not your grandfather’s car. Aimed squarely at buyers of the BMW 3-Series, the ATS is a small, rear-drive luxury car that drives as well as anything the Germans can make. M edical F ocus Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s New Hybrid Operating Room First in the Nation with the Most Advanced Technology Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has completed construction on a new hybrid operating room that is the first of its kind in the nation. The hybrid OR incorporates advanced technologies with traditional surgery capabilities to offer patients a new range of diagnostic and treatment procedures that can streamline care and reduce recovery time and complications.

Methodist’s new hybrid OR is the first in the United States that combines the most advanced operating table created

by Maquet, a German company specializing in OR equipment, integrated with the latest C-arm robotic system for angiography from Siemens Healthcare, one of the world’s largest suppliers of imaging equipment. This combination of technologies allows patients to be diagnosed and treated more rapidly and with better outcomes for a range of conditions, including vascular, cardiac, orthopedic and neurological. In addition, specialists from multiple disciplines can now work together more collaboratively.

It is designed for flexible patient positioning. The C-arm system developed

by Siemens provides physicians with increased clarity and positioning for images, enabling more rapid and advanced interventions, such as treating abdominal aortic aneurysms.

According to Chris Siebenaler, Chief Executive Officer at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, “This new hybrid OR is a great example of how we are bringing leading medical innovations to our region. The safety and speed of this technology enables our skilled surgeons to provide more advanced care for patients, especially those requiring more

complicated treatments.”

Imran Mohiuddin, M.D., vascular surgeon on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, believes the new concept will bring many benefits for patients, “In the past, a patient undergoing an interventional diagnostic procedure would have to be moved to a traditional operating room if the need for an open surgery developed. The hybrid OR is designed to perform both types of procedures. This rapid access to whatever the patient needs can lower treatment time and complications. It is an innovative leap forward and I know my patients will benefit.”

The number of hospitals throughout the country developing hybrid operating rooms is expected to increase rapidly based on the development of new procedures and increased patient need for vascular, cardiac, neurological and orthopedic treatment.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Honors Outstanding Nurse with DAISY Award Gloria Wallace, RN, is Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s DAISY Award winner, a national honor that recognizes the contributions of extraordinary nurses.

Gloria was chosen for her extraordinary efforts in helping a family member find a patient. She has consistently demonstrated her ability to go beyond the standard of care for patients and their family members.

When a family member came to the hospital looking for a patient and was having difficulty, Gloria made a decision to help. She actively helped the family member by calling all of the units and accompanied the family member to the emergency room to look even further.

Gloria then called surrounding hospitals

to help locate the patient and found that the patient had been admitted to another hospital. Gloria helped locate the patient in spite of the fact that she was already off duty.

“Gloria’s sense of responsibility for her patients and family members extended far beyond the hospital’s walls,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “When she realized the family member was lost, she stepped up and did what she could to provide assistance. Her actions are a living example of the nursing unit’s motto, ‘Treat each patient and family as if they were your family.’”

Heart Disease Risks That May Surprise You Which of the following increases your risk of heart disease?

Some heart disease risks, such as smoking, are quite commonly known, but did you know that diabetes, sleep apnea or depression could also raise your risk of a heart attack? Read on to learn some surprising heart disease risk factors and tips to lower your risk.

Diabetes. Diabetics run twice the risk of having heart disease or a stroke as nondiabetics. In fact, diabetics without a previous heart attack have the same future risk as non-diabetics with history of a heart attack! “People with diabetes or prediabetes have above normal blood glucose (sugar) levels,” says B. Keith Ellis, M.D., board certified interventional cardiologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Over time, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, resulting in vascular disease. It’s important to carefully monitor your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and work with your doctor to keep them under control.”

Kesavan Shan, M.D., board certified diagnostic cardiologist also on staff, further advises, “If you have prediabetes, you can lower your risk of adult-onset diabetes 60% by losing 7% of body weight (15 lbs. in a 200 lb. patient) and exercising at least 30 minutes daily, five days a week.”

Poor sleep. Sleep apnea is a disorder that affects at least 12 million Americans, typified by insomnia, snoring and daytime fatigue. Most sufferers have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where tissues in the throat collapse and obstruct the airway, causing blood oxygen levels to drop. The sleeper awakes enough to cough or gasp for air, then falls asleep again with the cycle repeating throughout the night. “Sleep apnea puts extra stress on the circulation

and raises the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure and diabetes,” says Dr. Shan. Sleep apnea is associated with obesity, chronic nasal congestion, large tonsils or other airway blockages. A sleep study is used to diagnose the condition.

Mental health. Depression and stress can also raise the risk of heart disease. Dr. Ellis adds, “ a study of 63,000 women found that those with depression were 50% more likely to die of heart disease than women without the condition, even when other risk factors were taken into account. To combat depression and stress, experts suggest exercise, turning to friends and family, relaxation techniques and seeking professional help, if necessary.”

Challenge Number One –

Be Quiet and Listen erhaps Martha Beck put it best. When asked about her favorite quote, it was not from some journal or complicated literary work but a simple and yet so very true life lesson from none other than Winnie the Pooh!

Here’s what Beck said: “Winnie the Pooh. There is a scene in which he, Piglet and Rabbit get lost. Rabbit, the frantic intellectual, keeps steering them in circles. Then he leaves, and Pooh tells Piglet, ‘Let’s go home.’ ‘But Pooh,’ Piglet asks, ‘Do you know the way?’ ‘No,’ says Pooh. ‘But there are 12 pots of honey in my cupboard, and they have been calling me for hours. I could not hear them properly before, because Rabbit would talk, but if nobody says anything, I shall know where they are calling from.’

All I ever do is help people quiet their rabbit minds until they hear the pots of honey speaking to their tummies. That’s the way to our destinies. Follow what is sweet, delicious and calling.”

This month’s life lesson in Living the Sweet Life is a small reminder to stop and wait for your inner voice to speak. At certain times of the day, it is buried and can barely speak at all, while in our quietest moments, it can be heard. Last year, the year flew by.

It came in with the same warnings as each year does, but somehow, I wasn’t paying attention and so every month flew in, and I was taken with it covered up in work and play and parenting and the like. But, I wasn’t paying attention.

Soon, it was fall again, and alas, Thanksgiving and then Christmas.

I allowed my time to be so filled with activities that the quiet of my own mind never happened, and the inner voice never got heard. It was in these last few weeks before Christmas when all the things that could be done had been – presents sent, cards written to loved ones and the planning of what would be a huge year for my company all done – that my inner voice began to speak.

Clear goals and living in the moment is what I heard. “Meat and tatters” as my Daddy would have called it with his distant voice still heard so loud and clear. Thank you, Daddy. What do I want specifically to happen this year? Where am I going? Where are my pots of honey calling from?

So, therein lies my January challenge to you. Sit quietly for a few moments each day, and listen to the inner voice. Let her or him have a say in your thing called life.

Find yourself inside yourself so to speak. It may tell you to go back to school. It might reveal a creative burst that enables you to see more clearly that special gift only you can share with the world. One thing is for certain, your voice will call to you, and you must be ready to hear what it has to say. The keys to your Sweet Life are already inside of you. Listen, and let it lead you to the pots of honey!
