Giving Back for the Holidays His idea to donate time and resources to a local resident whose roof was in desperate need of repair came to fruition just a few days before Christmas, Mr. & Mrs. Oscar & Emma Bravo, residents of Forsyth County were selected from a list of candidates provided by The Fuller Center for Housing to receive a new roof at no cost.

Other companies ultimately joined Hopewell in the project. Superior Distribution, a roofing and building materials distributor, offered their products. John and Leanne Frix at Lookout Dumpsters, a local rolloff dumpster company, and Bobby Scoggins at CRS Roofing Supply also donated to the Roof of Hope project.

The process, from concept to completion, lasted several weeks.

The construction - only a day.

Chamber promotes superior quality of life for all I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve in a position that has been held by many of our community’s distinguished leaders. By virtually every measure, we live in not just one of the greatest communities in Georgia — but one of the greatest communities in the nation.

In Forsyth County, our unemployment rate has decreased to 3.5 percent. In 2017 we saw 27 new and existing companies create nearly 1,400 new jobs and more than $167 million in new capital investment. Forsyth County continues to lead the state in population growth and job growth. In addition, Forsyth County’s world class schools are internationally recognized.

It’s easy to see why our community continues to be at the top of the most important lists in the country that measure prosperity and quality of life.

Outstanding communities and economies do not develop by chance. They are built on the foundation of leadership and relationships. We are blessed to have both of these in Cumming and Forsyth County.

The Chamber is an integral part of facilitating those relationships and fostering strong leaders.

The plan will establish how we will substantially increase the commercial investment in Forsyth County and accelerate the pace of our work in creating a more balanced tax digest that will in turn ensure that our property taxes stay low and that we can continue to fund the infrastructure that drives our economy and quality of life. It will also lay out a plan for how we will significantly expand our footprint with technology firms and further develop our reputation as the home for technology firms in Georgia.

The partnership with the City of Cumming, the Forsyth County government and the school system make us a strong player on a global stage. The Chamber will continue to work with leaders of Cumming and Forsyth County to facilitate the process of business interaction with our local government to ensure it is clear to the region and the nation that we have the most business-friendly community in the country. Cumming and Forsyth County have already taken strong steps in that direction and I thank them for their continued support.

The Chamber is our community’s venue to channel the incredible collective resources of great business people to create economic opportunity. Act 1 The Tam’s Backstage story starts with a little history. And we believe that the history makes Tam’s Backstage even more unique and interesting.

Full of charm and character, Tam’s Backstage is located in the historical Cumming Public School building in the heart of downtown Cumming. The building was originally constructed in 1923. At that time, the building served as Forsyth County’s only school! Teachers “commuted” to Cumming by horseback each week.

They would stay across the street at the Brannon-Heard House (then a boarding house) and travel back home on the weekends.

The structure has seen a lot of change in its lifetime to say the least. The Historical

Society of Forsyth County recounts that the school house was rebuilt in 1927 after a fire destroyed the interior. Also, the school transformed itself as needs arose and served as a primary grade school, middle grade school and in its final operative years as the headquarters of the Forsyth County Board of Education. In 1999, the City of Cumming acquired the school.

“From the wooden floors to the exposed brick walls, our building still speaks to its deep history,” explains Kelly Tam. “In fact, in 2000 the building was named to the National Register of Historic Places.”

In addition to Tam’s Backstage, the Cumming Public School building is now home to The Cumming Playhouse and The Historical Society of Forsyth County.

The two met working in the restaurant business many years ago – we’ll just say it was “back in the day.” From server, to general manager, to area director, they have grown up in the restaurant industry and know it inside and out. When the couple started their family,

Kelly stayed home with the kids, and Brian got involved with opening new restaurant concepts in the Atlanta area. As their kids reached middle and high school, Kelly started a catering business serving Forsyth County and surrounding areas.

One of her regular clients was The Cumming Playhouse.

In 2005, The Cumming Playhouse asked Brian and Kelly to consider opening a restaurant in the lower level of the school building that would serve theater attendees. The Tam’s jumped at the opportunity and began developing their concept. Initial ideas included a “school house” theme serving upscale sandwiches, soups and salads. However, as they spent time in the space they realized that its wine cellar feel lent itself to a completely different concept.

Act 3 Enter Tam’s Backstage. Tam’s Backstage has a cozy, vintage atmosphere that builds off of its close connection with the Playhouse, located just upstairs. The scratch kitchen offers a flavorful blend of American cuisines punctuated with a northern Italian flair.

“We wanted to create a dining experience that featured the playhouse connection as well as the history of the building,” says Kelly. “There really isn’t another restaurant in the area like ours. Not only do we enjoy having theater-goers dine with us, but also families, couples on date night, and even the business crowd.”
