ach year, real estate expert Frank Norton, Jr. delivers his economic forecast to Cumming and Forsyth County at a meeting presented by Alliance National Bank and hosted by the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce and the Lanier Forsyth Rotary Club. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear Norton’s expectations for 2014 and network with other business leaders.

The forecast will take place at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Forsyth Conference Center, located at 3410 Ronald Reagan Boulevard, Cumming, GA. Norton, president of the Gainesville-based Norton Agency real estate and insurance firm, is known for

giving accurate economic projections on communities across North Georgia. Norton became president of the Norton Agency in 1997 and today manages a vast network of associated businesses. He is also widely known for his excellent marketing strategies and keen business intuition. For the past several years, Norton has outlined growth and business trends for the community in his annual economic forecast. These predictions are based on a wealth of data collected by the Norton Agency’s Native Intelligence Report.

Partners in Education Forsyth County Schools Partner in Education, Georgia United Credit Union Donates to NFHS in “Kicks for Schools” Promotion

eorgia United Credit Union is excited to announce that North Forsyth High School is the first Forsyth County High School to win $2,000 in this season’s “Kick for Schools” football promotion.

Georgia United sponsors “Kicks for Schools” during football season to allow Forsyth County home teams the opportunity to “kick to win” money for their school.

The kicker is given four tries to kick a field goal from the five yard line, the ten yard line and two 20 yard kicks with each distance having a corresponding monetary value. The kicker can either kick three times from one distance or progress sequentially. The maximum amount that the kicker can earn from their three kicks is $1,000.

After the student’s third attempt, regardless of if he has made a field goal from any distance, he gets a chance to kick the “Money Ball”. If he makes the kick, Georgia United doubles the contribution to the school. $2,000 is the maximum that each high school can win in “Kicks for Schools.” NFHS wisely selected Colton Turner, a member of the Raiders football team, as their designated kicker. With Turner’s athletic skill NFHS was awarded the full reward amount!

Over the course of the 2013 football season all Forsyth County High Schools participated in the program and brought home the full reward amount. Forsyth County Schools salute Georgia United Credit Union for this $10,000.00 donation to local high schools.

In-Depth Supporting Existing Industries & Regional Recruitment in Forsyth County By: Tammy Caudell, Regional Project Manager, Georgia Department of Economic Development

I

n early November, Gov. Nathan Deal announced that Georgia is now the #1 state in the U.S. for business, according to Site Selection magazine. With more than 86 percent of business investment coming from Georgia’s existing industries and regional recruitment this year, it is clear that a significant factor in this successful ranking comes from the state’s ability to support companies that already call Georgia home.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD)’s Existing Industry and Regional Recruitment (EIRR) team works behind the scenes with companies in existing industries, providing them with all the tools they need to succeed. Whether it is planning the expansion of a new location or planning the expansion of a new headquarters, the EIRR team is able to provide lists of available buildings and sites and can facilitate meetings between the company, the community and multiple facets of the state government. By addressing concerns ranging from securing tax credits to mitigating environmental issues and producing the necessary grants, the EIRR team works handin-hand with Forsyth County to ensure that companies who locate to the region continue to experience growth in the region.

As the project manager and resident for the

region that includes Forsyth County – Region 2 – it is my job to address the specific priorities of the northeastern section of Georgia and provide economic development resources specific to the communities in the area.

Region 2 is very busy with activity these days and Forsyth County consistently has exciting opportunities regarding expansions and jobs in the Northeast Georgia region.

Economic development is a priority and the community leaders, including the CummingForsyth Chamber of Commerce, fully support this effort.

During Fiscal Year 2013, the EIRR team managed 74 percent of all locations and expansions handled by GDEcD. For Forsyth County in particular, the EIRR team has helped create 828 jobs and secure $54.5 million in investment in just over two years.

Forsyth County’s highly qualified workforce and welcoming economic development partners continue to attract companies from all over the world. One of Georgia’s major selling points for existing companies is the Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development (GRAD) Sites Program. Founded in 2008, the GRAD Sites Program allows for the EIRR team and state partners to identify sites across the

state that allow for expedited purchase and development by companies seeking to locate.

Local communities and economic development organizations submit potential sites to the state government. The state government then utilizes a third party reviewer to provide a report on the site’s acreage, zoning designation, transportation accessibility, ownership security, utilities services and wetlands, and stream delineation. When a company elects to locate on a GRAD site, the EIRR team is able to accelerate the leasing agreement. Nine GRAD sites across the state have created more than 3,000 jobs since the establishment of the program – a number that we look forward to growing along with existing industries in Georgia.

eople often ask, “What purpose does tourism serve in Forsyth County?” The Tourism Department of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce officially began in May of 2011. Anna Barlow, Director of Tourism, focuses on marketing the community’s best qualities to create a positive economic impact on the area.

Since 2011, the Tourism Department has created Cumming-Forsyth County’s official visitors’ guide and pad map that is distributed to all state welcome centers in Georgia, local community centers, the Sawnee Welcome Center and local hotels.

These publications play an integral part of the community’s Sports Tourism initiative. Barlow regularly travels to three tradeshows each year, two of which are sports industry tradeshows.

The sports travel industry is the largest tourism market for Forsyth County. Barlow targets tournament organizers in baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, running, swimming and more in hopes that they will bring their events to Forsyth County.

The Tourism Department also reaches out to the leisure traveler by partnering with the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department and the Forsyth C o u n t y Pa r k s Fo u n d a t i o n . T h i s partnership promotes the vast recreation opportunities in our area including Sawnee Mountain, the Big Creek Greenway and Lake Lanier just to name a few.

The Tourism Department is an

additional sales arm for local hotels, restaurants, shopping or anything that a visitor would need while in the area for recreation or tournaments. The tax revenue that is generated from hotel sales is paid by the visitor, not a Forsyth County resident. This tax goes back into the community to promote economic development, bringing new businesses to the county and helping to close the existing tax digest gap.

In 2012, Forsyth County’s Tourism Industry supported 1,500 jobs, generated $134.33 million in direct tourism spending, created $5.42 million in state tax revenues and generated $3.85 million in local tax revenues. On an average day in Forsyth County, visitors spent $368,027.00 on a tourismrelated expense. (Examples of tourismr el at ed expenses i ncl ude: spor t tournaments, swim meets, races, hiking Sawnee Mountain, meeting at the Forsyth Conference Center, traveling up Hospitality Highway, special events, medical tourism, etc.) The Tourism Department generated room night leads to Forsyth County hotels that account for an economic impact of $873,642.00 from January to November of 2013.

In 2014, the Tourism Department is very excited that Forsyth County along with other communities will host the Triple Crown Nationals on CBS Softball in July. Economic Development Report

I

n 2013 the national economy experienced sluggish growth; however, the local economy in Forsyth County thrived at an accelerated pace.

All of the community’s major industries continued to grow during 2013. In particular, the fastest growing industry sector – health care –continued to flourish. This year Forsyth County was ranked by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s County Health Ranking system as the “#1 Healthiest Community in the State of Georgia.”

Additionally, the local manufacturing sector experienced resurgence.

International giants such as Dieffenbacher and Smithfield experienced corporate expansions that are forecasted to generate nearly 60 new jobs and $11 million in new capital investment. Additionally, this year the Chamber of Commerce formally established a Manufacturing

Society to support the needs of the 500 manufacturing companies who make up the community’s manufacturing sector.

In terms of overall economic performance, since January of 2013 Forsyth County has participated in six business recruitment projects that are collectively forecasted to generate approximately 372 new jobs and $18.2 million in new capital investment.

Additionally, since the start of the year the Chamber of Commerce has successfully participated in ten corporate expansion projects, which are forecasted to yield roughly 151 new jobs and $25.1 million in new capital investment. In total, the combination of this year’s business recruitment and corporate expansion projects are forecasted to bring over 500 new jobs to the community while generating nearly $45 million in new capital investment.

Record-Breaking Numbers for the SBSC in 2013

h i s y e a r C u m m i n g - Fo r s y t h County’s small business sector continued to flourish. In 2013 the number of clients that the Chamber of C o m m e r c e ’s S m a l l B u s i n e s s Development Center assisted increased by 39 percent- totaling 376 clients. The SBSC also participated in the recruitment of such retail projects as Panera Bread Company’s new $4 million location in Lakeland Plaza and the Hampton Inn’s $1.1 million renovation on Buford Highway. In addition to assisting with recruitment projects, this year the SBSC held six Lunch & Learn events, serving over 180 business owners and managers. In August the Chamber held the 2013 Business Expo. This is the largest business to business event in the

community with 66 vendors and more than 1,300 in attendees. The Business Expo provides an environment for businesses to enhance their relationships, research the market for leading products and services and learn about the most innovative business practices among other local businesses.

Forbes recently named Forsyth County the seventh fastest-growing county in America. This growth applies to the business community as well. The SBSC’s numbers grow every year and we hope your small business can be a part of that.
