Forsyth Central senior Jake Scharff led the school’s DECA chapter for a year and a half while also competing on the varsity boys golf team. Scharff plans to major in cybersecurity at the University of Georgia.

DECA was senior’s place in Central ‘family’

Jake Scharff had been eager to attend Forsyth Central High School, partly because he’d be reuniting with most of the friends he grew up with, but also because he’d heard about the “family feel.”

Still, Scharff wasn’t initially sure where he fit within that “family.” First, he tried the school’s STEM program, but “it just wasn’t me,” Scharff said.

Midway through the year, Scharff was introduced to DECA, the popular organization that prepares students to become leaders and entrepre-

neurs in the fields of marketing, finance and hospitality and management.

Scharff had found his fit.

“That was my niche,” Scharff said.

Scharff dove into the organization with enthusiasm. He loved DECA competitions, particularly the role play events where individuals or small teams were given problem scenarios and had 10 minutes to develop a business plan to solve it and present it to judges.

“I loved being able to think on my feet,” Scharff said.

It became clear to Scharff that DECA was helping him develop confidence and meet new peo-

ple, and he wanted it to do the same for more students, so Scharff ran to be club president his junior year.

Scharff won, and he made it his mission to grow the club’s membership while also providing more opportunities for members to get involved. He helped decide the club’s community service projects and designed marketing materials and campaigns. He developed regular seminars and a three-week “training camp” to help members practice for role play competitions.

“I never imagined I would be the president of a club of over 500 kids,” Scharff said. “To have

that opportunity was insane.”

At first glance, Scharff ’s immediate future doesn’t seem to fit with his DECA background. Scharff at one point wanted to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, and he sat in on a cybersecurity class, and a discussion about using technical computer skills to prevent Russian hackers from interfering with American elections captured his attention.

“That was so cool to me,” Scharff said, “how you can use something people wouldn’t necessarily think of to defend the country.”

Scharff now plans to attend the University of Georgia and

major in cybersecurity, but he also sees a scenario where his involvement in DECA will be beneficial for his future.

Scharff plans to complete a program at Georgia that allows students to get an undergraduate degree and master’s degree in five years; Scharff wants a master’s in business administration. He might start his own cybersecurity company one day, he said.

“I could still build off the things I have learned in high school through DECA and marketing to put myself in a situation where I could do two things I wanted to do,” Scharff said.

Lambert senior Felicia Ling plans to major in public health at the University of Georgia and become a neonatologist after interning at Northside Hospital Forsyth’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit this school year.

Internship clears up future for Lambert’s Ling

Felicia Ling knew she wanted to be a physician even before she joined Lambert High School’s HOSA club, an organization that promotes careers in the health care industry. She had been leaning toward pediatrics, mostly because she loves children, she said.

Ling’s future became much clearer after an internship at Northside Hospital Forsyth this school year.

Out of 100 applicants, the

Lambert senior was one of 30 who were accepted for the three-month internship. She spent three months in the hospital’s Women’s Center and rotated between its labor and d e l ive r y, p o s t p a r t u m a n d Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) departments.

“It was so eye-opening,” Ling said.

The NICU made the biggest impression on Ling. Her role was fairly hands-off — she mostly shadowed doctors, nurses and technicians and gave crying babies pacifiers or helped change beds — but

Ling was moved by the journey the babies made to full health.

The experience crystallized for Ling her plans for the next several years. She’ll attend the University of Georgia in the fall and major in public health and then enter the Peace Corps after graduation. Ling hopes her experience in Peace Corps will lead to international work for a while, but when she’s ready to “settle down,” Ling wants to go to med school and become a neonatologist and work with premature babies.

“I just fell in love with the

idea of giving someone a second chance almost when they didn’t have it,” Ling said.

“They came into this world with so many challenges that they didn’t ask for.”

Ling added: “They’re the next generation of people, so we have to do everything we can to protect those young kids.”

Aside from HOSA, Ling was involved in a variety of things at Lambert. She lettered four years in track and field, competing in five different events, and played flute in the marching band, including the

past two years as section leader.

Between all three, Ling gained an appreciation for working with others and connecting with people in a genuine way, she said.

“The school’s filled with 3,000 students, and it’s easy for you to feel alone,” Ling said. “... The biggest thing is making connections, learning to talk to other people deeper than a, ‘Hello, how are you?’

There’s 3,000 stories in this school.”

Lucy Malone plans to take her experience in leadership roles and use it on the set of a Marvel movie. She chose that goal after joining the North Forsyth High School’s A/V Technology & Film pathway.

Malone finds her path at North Forsyth High

Lucy Malone wants to work on the set of a Marvel movie one day.

It’s a far different vision than Malone had for her future when she entered North Forsyth High School four years ago.

For the longest time Malone saw herself pursuing a career in the performing arts. Born and raised in Forsyth County, she’d been in theater since elementary school at Silver City. But by her junior year at North Forsyth,

Malone sensed that wasn’t the right path anymore.

For a while, she considered being a teacher. Malone’s friends often told her she’d make a great one.

On a whim, Malone took audio/visual technology and film and was hooked. The class made music videos and filmed the school’s morning news show. She enjoyed the creative process of video editing and the collaborative work in North’s broadcasting class.

“I really enjoy directing people,” Malone said. “I think I’m

pretty good at seeing where we need to be and getting everybody toward that end goal.”

Malone had plenty of experience in leadership positions at North. She was class president her junior and senior years, and class treasurer as a sophomore.

She was also president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and SkillsUSA clubs.

Malone also participated in the global poverty-focused club Simple Charity, a small femaleonly Bible study called GRITS (Girls Raised In The Spirit), performed in Cantamus, the

school’s all-women’s choir, and volunteered in special education classes.

Oh, and Malone was the school mascot for three years.

“It was way too big for me, but they let me do it anyways,” Malone said. “And it’s so hot.”

Malone’s mom had always encouraged her to get involved at North, and though juggling several activities was tricky at times, Malone overall found it rewarding.

“There are so many opportunities here,” Malone said.

Case in point: the school’s

A/V Technology & Film pathway. Malone found it and with it a plan for her future. Malone crammed in levels 2 and 3 of the pathway this school year to complete it in preparation for when she attends Kennesaw State University in the fall.

“It’s so cool that there are so many different jobs in the industry,” Malone said. “You can run sound, you can run the cameras, you can direct, you can be in front of the cameras.

So it kind of played into what I’d been doing before with performing.”

South’s Stepp bonds with special needs students

Jefferson Stepp’s main interests entering South Forsyth High School were basketball, video games and hanging out with friends.

Then one of Stepp’s friends introduced him to their little sister with special needs.

Something moved Stepp, and that year, as a sophomore, he started volunteering in South’s special education department.

His involvement over the next three years left an indelible impact on the now-senior and changed his perception of those with special needs.

“I thought [special needs kids] were all going to be the same,” Stepp said, “but no, they all have different wild personalities that I love.”

Stepp’s involvement was fairly basic at first. Unfamiliar with the special needs community, Stepp modeled his interactions after one of the teachers, Jon Arant.

“He was just completely normal,” Stepp said. “That’s how I decided to be.”

Stepp quickly grew more comfortable. He started accompanying one student, Felix, around the school as they delivered mail to classrooms.

“We just walk around and talk about how his day’s been,” Stepp said. “He loves soccer.

He wants to be a ref for his little brother who plays soccer.”

Stepp’s involvement with the school’s special education department culminated this past school year when he was an integral part of an ambitious project to help Carter Johannessen and Carli Walters, two of South’s special education students, travel to and attend the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, N.C., through Dream On 3, a sports nonprofit organization providing kids

with special needs an opportunity “to live out their ultimate dream,” according to its website.

Stepp and a handful of other students were tabbed to be a part of the school’s Junior Dream Team that planned activities related to the project.

They met weekly starting in August to brainstorm the project’s two major promotional and fundraising events — a student-faculty basketball game in November and silent disco night in February. They created T-shirts and wristbands. They wrote a rap song and filmed a

music video. They started and managed a GoFundMe account.

A week after the silent disco, the whole school gathered for a pep rally to send off Johannessen and Walters.

“It was surreal,” Stepp said.

“We had talked about it and everything. When it actually happens, it hits.”

Stepp followed Johannessen and Walters’ trip on social media with equal parts anticipation and satisfaction. He saw Carter meet NBA players and get treated to hamburgers and Carli take pictures with NBA cheerleaders.

“They looked like they were having so much fun,” Stepp said.

The experience reinforced for Stepp a lesson he learned over the past three years of being involved in South’s special education department.

“It opened up my eyes to different parts of the world that I was blind to,” Stepp said. “...

As terrible as this sounds, I thought [special needs students] were all the same, like they didn’t have any kind of personality or anything.

“Then, when I met them, they filled a hole in my heart. I

love them.”

Stepp is heading off to Statesboro this fall to attend Georgia Southern University.

He plans to get his four-year degree, enlist in the Air Force and then attend medical school to become either a sports medicine doctor or a physician assistant, he said.

But when Stepp returns home for breaks next school year, he knows one group of people he’ll be sure to visit.

“It’s been a great ride,” Stepp said, “and I’m definitely coming back here to visit them.”

West Forsyth senior Mikhari Sibblis had a standout athletic career for the Wolverines in basketball, football and track and field. Sibblis will attend Lehigh University to play football on a full athletic scholarship.

Hard work pays off for West Forsyth senior

Mikhari Sibblis was trying to prove to West Forsyth High School’s football coaching staff that he was worthy of being a starter, so the defensive end was particularly eager for spring practice his sophomore year.

But on the first drill of the first day, Sibblis hit his hand awkwardly against another player and felt pain. It was broken.

That experience was only a minor setback for Sibblis. He went on to earn that starting position on the football team that fall as a junior and have a standout athletic career at West in basketball, football and track

and field.

But the process that spring and summer of getting back to full strength left an impression on Sibblis. He will attend L e h i g h U n i v e r s i t y, i n Pennsylvania, in the fall on a full athletic scholarship to play football, and he plans to major in biology and go into sports medicine.

“I remember the whole rehabilitation and all that getting back right over the summer,” Sibblis said. “It’s something I can look back on now and appreciate, so I’d want to be able to help people out if that happened to them.”

Sports anchored Sibblis’ time in high school. He saw his first varsity action ever as a sopho-

more on the basketball team and was a key contributor t h e r e a f t e r, h e l p i n g t h e Wolverines’ program reach the state playoffs a school-record three straight times.

One of Sibblis’ most cherished memories came in track, where he competed in the triple jump and contributed to the boys’ team’s region championship this school year, a feat Sibblis had come so close to accomplishing in both basketball and football.

“Finally getting [a region championship] meant a lot to me,” Sibblis said.

But Sibblis was a superior talent in football, where the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder became a disruptive force on defense

starting his junior year. He helped West reach the state playoffs in each of his years on varsity, highlighted by a firstround victory this past fall, the program’s first in six years.

After his junior year, Sibblis began to attract the attention of college coaches. That increased after he participated in an allstar game along with other top players in the state.

Suddenly, Sibblis was juggling his class work, sports and college recruiting.

“It was difficult at first,” Sibblis said, but he managed to balance it all.

“My mom would always tell me, academics are first,” Sibblis said. “I always made sure I had my work done, made

sure I would study, made sure I would make time for academics before sports.”

It worked. Sibblis maintained a 3.7 grade-point average and initially committed to play at Cornell University in the Ivy League. He switched to Lehigh after the school offered him a full scholarship in April.

Even after Sibblis had his dream to play college football come to fruition, he knew his work wasn’t done.

“It felt relieving for probably a day, and then I thought I have to get back to the grind and working out,” Sibblis said.

“Nothing’s guaranteed. I’ve had to work for what I’ve gotten so far, so I have to keep working if I want to succeed anymore.”

Pinecrest’s mission sinks in with Flanagan

Mary Flanagan came back from a mission trip to Mexico the summer going into her junior year at Pinecrest Academy with a clear challenge to herself.

“I was so touched by helping out in this community,” Flanagan said.

“I was like, ‘What can we do here at home?’”

The answer for Flanagan was the Mission Club, a student organization she started that school year to coordinate service events in the community.

They started by collecting supplies for victims impacted by hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. Later that school y e a r, M i s s i o n C l u b helped organize a carnival for a refugee community in Clarkston.

This year, the club held a drive for Operation Christmas Child, a “shoebox ministry” of Samaritan’s Purse that sends toys and household items to kids in need around the world.

F l a n a g a n ’s e ff o r t s model one of Pinecrest’s core missions — for students to “use their gifts in service to others.”

Perhaps it’s not surprising that Flanagan so easily embraced those values. She’s the last of her three siblings to go to Pinecrest, and she started from the very beginning in Pre-K3.

A l o n g t h e w a y, Flanagan recognized the unique close-knit community at Pinecrest. She became familiar and close with not just friends and school staff but also their whole family unit.

Once, when Flanagan

was in fourth grade, her family’s storage shed was destroyed, and with it all their Christmas decorations, including a cherished advent calendar. One day, while visiting her brother’s class, Flanagan noticed his teacher had the same advent calendar their family had just lost.

Flanagan told the teacher about the storage fire.

That Christmas, the teacher gave Flanagan’s mom, Madeliene, the principal of Pinecrest’s Lower School, the advent calendar.

“It was such a touching moment for us to realize they personally remember y o u ,” Flanagan said. “It’s not just about your academics here; it’s about the whole person.”

Even Flanagan’s future plans are influenced by this environment. She

McTyre made most of time at Horizon

Jake McTyre’s first day freshman year at Horizon Christian Academy was probably different than the typical one for a newcomer.

McTyre was just jumping into the K-12 private school on Sawnee Drive after attending Fideles Christian School for his middle school years, and at the beginning of the summer he knew only one other person going to Horizon.

That changed after McTyre joined the football team. During practices over the summer, McTyre got to know Horizon students from all grade levels. He ran with them, lifted weights with them, got tackled with them.

“It was cool to be a part of a team going in my first day,” McTyre said.

Sports continued to be an integral part of McTyre’s time at Horizon. He played football all four years and also tennis as a freshman and sophomore and soccer as a junior and senior. The soccer team was the state runner-up McTyre’s junior season.

McTyre recognizes he might not have had the opportunity to play three sports at a larger traditional high school.

“I’ve always enjoyed being on a team,” McTyre said. “It’s just fun. I love all the three sports I played. It was a huge part of high school for me.”

McTyre felt other benefits from Horizon’s smaller environment too. The pace of classes seemed to fit for every

student, McTyre said, and when he was flummoxed by certain subject material, the small class size allowed teachers to provide more individualized attention.

McTyre found that especially helpful in AP calculus, he said. It’s not a subject that comes as naturally for him, but it helped that his soccer coach, Dr. Chung Lee, taught the class. Lee was always available to help students after he completed the teaching portion of class.

“Him willing to give us all the individual attention helped keep that class a pace that’s good for everyone so that they can all succeed and really understand what we’re doing,” McTyre said.

Between the classroom and soccer team, McTyre got to know that Lee “is the same easy-going, fun-loving guy

everywhere he is,” McTyre said, but the senior got to know most of his teachers just as well.

“It’s like a small community; everyone knows everyone,” McTyre said.

“That’s really been a neat experience.”

That’s partly because McTyre wasn’t afraid to take make the most of his time at Horizon, and he plans to do the same when he attends the University of Georgia in the fall.

“Just embrace the opportunities you have here,” McTyre said. “It is what you make it. Play sports, get to know people, really take advantage of that individual attention you’re going to get and build relationships with these people.

“That’s what I’ve done here, and I’m really glad I did.”
