B

eaver Toyota opened in Cumming a little more than four years ago, but the reputation they’ve already earned makes them a community staple.

Their formula of good people at the helm, a great team running the show, and a fantastic environment makes this place different from your usual dealership. There’s something special here, and you’re going to want to experience it for yourself.

It starts with Linda and Mike Beaver. Veterans in the car business and hailing from Oklahoma and Texas, respectively, they traded life out west to helm Beaver Toyota in Cumming (and two other dealerships here in the southeast).

Back in Texas, they were known as the “Turnaround Couple,” as they’d take underperforming dealerships or bankrupt operations and get them back in the black. Their personal reputation also precedes them.

They’re people of faith who believe in spirituality – of any kind – as the foundation for doing good business. Both created a track record for success, and allowed them to win out against more than 100 big-dog dealership networks to run Toyota’s Cumming spot.

“Salt of the earth – that’s the kind of people they are,” said Cheryl McFadden, director of community partnerships. “That’s critical to our culture, here. There are all kinds of religions under this roof, yet we all come together as a team in spirit and spirituality to have each other’s back, and to grow each other into better people, into an even better culture. That is what leads us.”

It’s led to an incredible team across several departments under the direction of general manager Patrick Abad. He asserts a daily goal to be the best version of themselves every single day, but 22 | BEST OF FORSYTH | 2022

together, building each other up to improve as a group.

“A new car is going to cost about the same no matter where you shop,” said McFadden. “The community can make a decision of where they want to buy that new car based on how they feel about the connection they have doing business with us. That’s what sets us apart. People come here because they want to do business with us. People want to do business with people that are good people. That’s a natural thing.”

For that reason, Abad consistently challenges his teams with questions like, How do we rise above and make our customer experience better? How can we be better community partners? How do we strive to improve upon ourselves? How do we become a better team as a whole? They ask those same questions, repetitively, every day.

The Beaver Toyota culture is edified further by weekly messages in the showroom from the in-house chaplain, group sessions to identify and resolve weak links, teambuilding through charity work in the community, and more.

McFadden noted that, in addition to that long list of questions, they include answering how they can reach out to the community in creative ways to ignite partnerships that celebrate coming together. It’s an idea that’s intrinsic to the Beaver Toyota dealership, as the Beavers built its campus with the community in mind.

The building includes two community rooms: a 14-seat executive conference room and an 80-person seminar room. It’s dedicated to the community as a meeting space when nowhere else is available — something that came in handy once the pandemic hit.

“It’s beyond just writing a check,” said McFadden. “If we can serve our community in meaningful ways that bring them together, in ways that are outside the box and get more people thinking, then we feel like we have started to really make a difference.”

What happens on the floor is pretty outsidethe-box, too.

“A lot of stores have a defined process for working with customers, but what makes us unique is the fact that we don’t try to define it,” said Abad. “We believe that every customer is different, every customer wants to go through a different experience, and every customer is at a different point in their journey.”

While some people have done a lot of research, others have no idea. Abad stresses that they want to find out where people are on their particular journey. Once they understand that, then his team can build a unique process for that specific customer resulting in an experience that the customer is more comfortable with, and makes better Patrick Abad, general manager of Beaver Toyota. use of their time.

“We want to be the best, yes. But it’s deeper than that,” said Abad. “We want to become the most respected automotive dealership in this industry because of who we are as people and how we operate as an organization.

“My thing for 2022 is to build and develop a selfless service culture (a BADASS culture, if you’re into acronyms),” he said. “If we surround ourselves with happy people who care — they don’t have to be good car people. We can teach them how to take care of customers, how to sell cars, how to service cars, how to work on cars, how to detail cars, how to park cars … but if they’re happy people who care, we can be successful. Because it will show.”

The numbers prove that it does. “This is a culture where you put everybody else in front of your own needs,” said Abad.

“It’s the customer first, the company first, your neighbor first, your teammate first, knowing that it will eventually come back to you in success.

“The goal for 2022 is to do a great job giving back to our community,” said Abad. “We have a responsibility as a successful business in this community to keep giving back. We have to take our people, go out, and make an impact.

We have to be the hands and feet.”
