appy 10th birthday to our sister publication, Forsyth Woman magazine! Doesn’t seem possible, but yes, you are ten years in the making and what a ten years it’s been! While Forsyth Family has only been around for the last eight years, I’ve watched you from the start. You’ve blossomed into a beautiful community resource that women and men who dare to admit it look forward to each month. There are so many wonderful things about doing the job we do, but having folks approach you as you put the new issue in the stands each month with great anticipation is like getting a big warm hug. You like us, you really like us!

Publisher Keela Johnson is like the sister I never had, and besides being an amazing friend that gave me the opportunity of a lifetime (publishing Forsyth Family magazine), she’s also been a wonderful mentor. I’ve never met anyone with more drive and passion. Have a cause? Get Keela on your side and amazing things will happen! Girls’ World Expo

his year, iHeart Media is bringing the power of the Girls’ World Expo to the Triad! On Sunday, September 20th, the Millennium Center in Winston-Salem will host the Girls’ World Expo from 12−4 p.m. This event is a phenomenal way to encourage young women to be strong and confident in a world where the sky is the limit!

“It was clear that there is an absolute need to have an event like this for these young women,” said Carolyn Carver, Senior Vice President of Sales for iHeart Media, Inc. “There is nothing like this event anywhere in our region. Our company sees and values the importance of connecting with our youth today, as these are our leaders of the future. We are looking forward to providing this avenue for these young women for many years to come.”

The event will showcase successful women and include many valuable lessons for girls in our community. “Our keynote speaker is Kim Roberts from Crumley Roberts,” said Carver. “We have other prominent female leaders in the community that will be heading up other seminars during the day. The seminars have been designed specifically around what the girls in the Triad want to know about. We have a confidence seminar; a money matters seminar; a “What are boys really thinking?” session; a parent-specific session; a cyber bullying (social media responsibility) session; and a trend-setting and healthy girl panel. It will be a jampacked day with a ton of great information for the girls and their parents.”

Ten Girls of Merit are selected from the nominations. The girls are honored at a catered brunch courtesy of the Millennium Center the morning of the Girls’ World Expo. Families of the chosen Girls of Merit will be in attendance to support and honor their Girl of Merit.”

Reaching out FOR SUCCESS

By Martie Emory hen new students and their families first visit The Piedmont School in High Point, they immediately are drawn to the “family feel” of this unique—and warmly welcoming—learning opportunity.

“I think this is one of the greatest assets of our school,” says Kori Mackall, Director of Communications. “So many of our students come to us feeling defeated from their previous academic struggles, and it’s amazing to see how almost instantaneously they begin to let their guard down and open up.”

The school is geared towards young people who simply learn differently, and Kori says that once students finally feel like their environment mirrors their individual needs, success is right at their reach. “That’s when the blossoming really takes off, both academically and socially,” she says.

From its popular KinderAcademy to a newly added 9th- and 10thgrade online program, the school hopes to add one high school grade level each year, while staying true to the philosophy of small classes and individualized goals. For the new high school students, there will be a rigorous curriculum of face-to-face classes of the core basics— English, math, history and science—along with electives and certain online classes mediated by an on-campus facilitator.

For all ages at The Piedmont School a teacher/student ratio of 1:6 is the norm, a crucial element for students with ADHD and other learning disabilities. For this new school year, the staff expects 70 students from Kindergarten through 10th grade, with the youngest class focused on students who appear to be at risk of learning differently and not quite ready for a traditional classroom setting.

most tender developmental years. “When students enter The Piedmont School they can immediately take a breath,” he says. “They feel relief from fighting the system and enjoy a place where they are accepted and encouraged to learn and grow.”

With much of their success based on a unique approach to learning, reading, writing and math are taught at all levels via visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic methods. Skills are taught in smaller components, which is especially crucial for shortened attention spans, and the smaller class size allows for learning—and succeeding—at each individual’s pace.

In addition to their countless success stories in the classroom, The Piedmont School is also known for fostering a bond within the community. With a variety of activities such as charity runs, fundraisers and donation drives for several local non-profit groups, they also teach the value of building relationships outside of school.

“We value our community partners very much,” says Kori, speaking of both fellow educators in the area and the school’s wonderful advisory board. “Just like the support they give us, we try to teach our students the importance of giving back to their community.”

Past students—now college graduates—are perhaps the most faithful cheerleaders of what The Piedmont School has to offer, as are current parents. Terri Davies, mother to a rising fifth grader, says that upon entering The Piedmont School family, her own family breathed a huge sigh of relief.

“We knew this school could bring out my son’s talents and help him use them to his potential,” she says. “He has grown so much over the last three years and we can’t imagine him being educated anywhere else. He absolutely loves school, which is a testament to the wonderful staff!”

Children’s Home Society Touching Families with Love By Martie Emory

I

t’s no coincidence that the Children’s Home Society’s website uses the words “transforming” and “thriving” as it takes readers through the history and much-respected success of the organization’s purposeful bonding of families.

Children are always at the heart of their work.

“Our mission at CHS is to promote the right of every child to a permanent, safe and loving family,” says Alicia Bowles, area director for business development and advocacy. “There really is no greater satisfaction than creating and strengthening families.”

If we were writing this in the 1970s, the Children’s Home Society would have been known primarily for placing infants with adoptive parents, and the majority would have been Caucasian infants. But in the last 20 years, they’ve seen a decrease in infants placed and an increase in the number of children in the care of the Department of Social Services. These children in need of a place to call home range all the way up to the age of 17 and are often part of sibling groups. Their ethnicity is also much more diverse.

Thanks to offices in several cities across North Carolina and a large, talented state-wide staff, CHS serves nearly 20,000 children and their families annually, a truly amazing statistic and a powerful accomplishment. Their work never strays from the core values of compassion, integrity, excellence and innovation. Besides what they are most known for—adoptions and foster care—they also house one of the most respected networks of family support services in the state.

Families in crisis are often referred to the CHS programs, and some come on their own when they feel the daily stress of parenting becoming too much; when they face a challenging family situation, such as teen pregnancy (the society also offers teen-pregnancy prevention programs in local middle and high schools); or find themselves at the point that “family preservation” is much needed in order to insure their children never set foot in foster care. For new adoptive families, there are also programs to help them adjust to their “new normal.”

The children and their needs are many, and CHS is continually searching for caring, nurturing foster parents and potential adoptive families, lovingly referred to as “resource families,” since they provide what the children currently in care need most. They routinely host information sessions in Forsyth County and also rely on community support, with 30 percent of their funding coming from private contributions, local special events and the enthusiasm of the society’s many business partners, who also value the importance of fostering families.

For Brian, Nisa, Isaiah and Joshua McMillan the Children’s Home Society was nothing less than a lifesaver. Their story is a happy one, as both

Isaiah (now five and on his way to kindergarten) and Joshua (a lively two-yearold) have been with Brian and Nisa since birth. Although theirs was a fairly routine and speedy case, both would stress patience as you start down the adoption path, since by its very nature, and with the involvement of the court system, the road can seem daunting.

“Our advice to perspective couples who are looking to adopt is to be very patient and open-minded, but to also take good care of one another,” says Brian. “The process can be very emotional at times, and couples have to be there both mentally and emotionally for one another.”

Along the way the two faced the inevitable calls about possible adoption opportunities that never materialized, and that’s when the emotional roller coaster can be overwhelming.

“Our faith in God and our love for each other, grounded in the belief that parenthood was in our future, helped comfort and sustain us during those stressful times,” says Brian, who says he and Nisa couldn’t have been more impressed with the love, compassion and professionalism they felt from the CHS at every turn of their journey.

“They are able to balance the needs of the children—which is their priority—with the emotions and questions of potential parents, all at the same time,” says Brian.

“When we look at families like the McMillans, they make us smile,” says Alicia.

“We are so pleased that we are able to touch their lives.”

As for Harry and Ron’s decision to make a duo a trio and include Hermione, “There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.”

Standing Up to a Draco Malfoy On the train, Harry and Ron are confronted

by Draco Malfoy and his friends, Vincent Crab and Gregory Goyle. Draco immediately insults Ron and then tries to persuade Harry that he would be a better friend. And Goyle tries to take something that doesn’t belong to him, namely a Chocolate Frog. Harry and Ron recognize Draco and his friends for who they are, bullies.

How many years does it take Harry and Ron to fully understand Draco? Would you agree, about seven? Throughout the books, there are countless examples of Draco’s animosity toward Harry; however, as readers, we know he is jealous of Harry’s likeability and fame. We also know extensive details about Draco’s life and how his story ends. (Yes, there is great value in analyzing the “Why?” and “What would I do?” in fictitious relationships.)

Before you rule out a potential friend, do not assume you know him or her. But if

you have truly met a Malfoy, it is better to gravitate towards kinder friends.

Sometimes, it takes classmates years to form an understanding, and not necessarily a friendship, between one another.

Friends Will and Can Say “No” to You! “Don’t you call me an idiot!” said Neville. “I don’t think you should be breaking any more rules! And you were the one who told me to stand up to people!”

“Yes, but not to us,” said Ron in exasperation.

Friendship is well defined as “individuals who support one another”; however, in the circumstance of Harry, Ron and Hermoine breaking obvious school rules to leave Gryffindor tower, this decision puts Neville in a difficult position. Readers applaud Neville’s courage and loyalty in confronting his friends and risking, perhaps, the loss of their friendship. While Hermione wavers, Neville stands firm on his principles.

Always remember, the same qualities we admire in our favorite fictitious characters hold true in real life. Only you can decide whether you will do the right thing or follow your friends. Time and again, Harry and his friends face their fears, prove their bravery, and grow as moral characters and leaders.

n the last months of his life, Ryan Wood inspired a hashtag that went global, #Pray4Ryan, #PrayForRyan. His story touched the lives of millions, including celebrities and athletes such as Brad Pitt and Chris Paul. Sadly, Ryan passed away in 2013, but thanks to the efforts of some local friends, his memory lives on through the Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre.

James Gardner went to school with Ryan and they bonded over a love of football. Since they were both unable to play their sophomore years, they spent time together, watching games and practice sessions, and getting to know one another.

James, his father, and other volunteers began building the amphitheater in October, 2014, working diligently on weekends through April, 2015.

On August 9th, the amphitheater was officially dedicated—named for Ryan, but honoring the lives of twelve other students who had passed away unexpectedly and tragically. “It was a wonderful experience to see so many come together to remember our friend, and to know that his name will live on for future generations,” said James.

“We have other plans for the amphitheater down the road, but for now, the original vision is complete. While we’d like to eventually add lighting, an irrigation system and more plants, for now, I’m very pleased that the Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre is open to the public and for the community to enjoy.”

After Ryan’s death, James wanted to do something for the community, as well as honor his friend’s memory. The vision was an amphitheater—a place that could be enjoyed by many and used for a number of purposes, including theater performances, picnics, weddings, and as an outdoor classroom and more. The location chosen was Clemmons Elementary School, where Ryan was once a student.

Indeed, the area is quiet and peaceful, and an ideal place to reflect.

The Ryan Wood Memorial Amphitheatre is located at: Clemmons Elementary School 6200 Bingham Avenue Clemmons, NC The Amphitheater is only accessible by walking down a nature trail, “Mother Nature’s Way” or from the football fields and playground.

The project began in 2014. “Everyone was on board,” shared James.

“While we had to get permission from the school and the Village of Clemmons, obtain permits, and follow other steps in the process, we had everyone’s in addition to Ryan, the Ryan Wood support.”

Memorial amphitheatre also remembers: “Funds were raised through donations, and many companies donated supplies,” said James. “We also received grants and donations from the town and school PTA in order to make the project a reality.”

Participate in a Citizen Science Project by “Adopting” a Butterfly at SciWorks SciWorks Special Events & Marketing

T

his summer, for the third and final year, SciWorks is embarking on a “citizen science” project with the Adopt-and-Release-a-Butterfly program. What is “citizen science?” It is the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the general public, typically as part of a collaborative project with professional scientists. The program at SciWorks allows visitors to symbolically “adopt” a monarch butterfly for $25, which they or someone they designate will then release on Sunday, September 27th, 2015.

Each butterfly will be tagged with a unique research number, and the adopter will receive an adoption certificate listing that number, as well as two free individual admission passes to the release and an “I Adopted a Butterfly at SciWorks” car magnet.

“The decline of butterfly populations, particularly the monarch, has been in the news quite a bit lately, and our butterfly programs in the last three years are examples of ‘citizen science,’ in which the science experiment is actually being conducted by the visitors to SciWorks,” says Paul Kortenaar, SciWorks Executive Director. Details about the release date and location of these monarchs will be sent to Monarch Watch, a research program at the University of Kansas. Any tagged butterflies that are later recovered at the overwintering grounds in Mexico—or at other places along their migration path—can help provide scientists with important information, including specific routes, timing and mortality.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a partnership with the National Wildlife Federation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to provide resources and programming intended to help save this iconic butterfly, whose populations have, according to research estimates, plummeted by as much as 90% in recent years. Monarchs have suffered for a number of reasons, including pesticide use, logging in their overwintering grounds, and development along migration routes, but particularly harmful is the loss of their only larval host plant, the milkweed, which has been all but

By offering Butterfly Day, on Sunday, September 27th from 1 to 4 p.m., SciWorks staff hope to be a part of that process. Visitors will enjoy a variety of activities including tips for butterfly gardening and identification, facepainting and crafts. At 3 p.m., everyone who adopted a monarch will count down and release all 100 butterflies at once. “The mass

release is a wonderful experience, and it can even be quite moving,” says event coordinator Ally McCauley. “We have some folks who have adopted a butterfly each year; it’s become a family tradition. Other people have adopted a monarch to commemorate a birthday, graduation, or anniversary, or to remember a loved one.” All activities (excluding butterfly adoptions) are included in museum admission. In the event of rain or high heat, however, the release may be postponed; call (336) 767-6730 if weather looks questionable.

aekwondo is known worldwide as one of the oldest martial art forms. It began over 2,000 years ago in Korea. The word taekwondo, by definition, provides insight into the overall purpose of the discipline—Tae (foot), Kwon (hand or fist), Do (way of life or path)—that is, “to put one’s fist under control.”

Along with this discipline of self-control, TRU Taekwondo incorporates Trust, Respect and Understanding. Just as the history of Taekwondo is rooted in Korea, TRU Taekwondo is rooted in Winston-Salem and commended to its students.

TRU is an important concept for the school itself, not simply the name of the school.

It speaks to the purpose and mission that guides the instructors and students. The “Trust” factor expands to the community and surrounding environment; “Respect” becomes second nature and an integral part of the student’s daily life; while “Understanding” is two-way communication vehicle for the instructors, the students and their families.

Students come to TRU Taekwondo for a number of reasons. Some want the physical exercise; some want to challenge themselves to earn their Black Belt; others see the benefits of self-discipline via martial arts; while some need a stress-relief outlet.

Parents also recognize the confidence and focus gained as a result of taekwondo training. Enrolling their children to gain taekwondo skills while learning respectfulness, focus and confidence, are seen as important attributes in every phase of life. In some cases, the entire family joins the TRU family and incorporates TRU disciplines into their lifestyle.

TRU Taekwondo has a variety of classes at all age levels. Some students are challenged with ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, or anger management.

Parents have observed improvement in focus and increased social adjustment in their children involved with TRU Taekwondo.

All incoming students go through an assessment as part of the enrollment process.

Each person has a private class session with their parent(s) and instructor to discuss the expectations of the student and family. Sharing the goal for the student is one of the important components of TRU, along with assessing the physical and emotional abilities of the potential student. The Masters at TRU Taekwondo strive to ensure that families and students achieve their goals and then set a higher goal. A partnership agreement is signed to confirm expectations.

All of the instructors at TRU Taekwondo have earned their Master level (4th- degree black belt). TRU is pleased to have over 50+ students who have earned a Black Belt; many of them assist the Masters during classes on a regular basis. Some of

the younger Black Belts assist the Master working with the Super Kids class (4- to 6-year-olds). The average class size is around 15 students and the overall atmosphere is nurturing with positive, focused training.

TRU Taekwondo is affiliated with over 15 schools in Forsyth and Davidson counties. They are asked to conduct seminars as the new school year begins, as well as just before testing time to help students focus and prepare.

Through the Summer Camp program, students are encouraged to give back to the community. One day per week is devoted to a service project to help the community. In addition, theme days focused on specific competencies that foster growth and development (such as kindness, self-control and leadership) are part of the program.

TRU Taekwondo’s Peters Creek location offers an after-school program. Students are picked up from school and participate in a variety of activities up to 6:00 p.m. Registered teachers oversee the program and are available for tutoring, if needed. Students get their homework done. There are craft activities, games, Taekwondo classes and snacks provided. The after-school program also promotes service projects. The event kicks off with the 5K at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Buddy Walk and Family Fun Day, 9 a.m.−12:30 p.m.

Registered participants will receive a Buddy Walk T-shirt, food and drinks, and access to carnival games, inflatables and crafts. The event will also feature a talent show, music, train rides, an information/resource area and raffle drawings with tickets ranging in cost from $1 to $10. Last year, more than 1,000 people came out and participated, with proceeds going to support the programs PDSSN provides for families and the community. Those include Next Chapter Book Clubs (which promote adult literacy), No Limits II Dances and a parent education and support group that is open to families of children with any type of disability.

The PDSSN also provides resource notebooks for families affected by Down syndrome; offers

community grants and conference scholarships; and hosts a New Parent Celebration, Ladies’ Nights Out and Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome (D.A.D.S.).

For the last thirty years, the PDSSN and its members have worked to “ensure that individuals with Down syndrome in the Piedmont area are valued, included, and given the opportunities to pursue fulfilling lives” by providing emotional support, educational opportunities, advocacy and training to parents, education and health care professionals, and members of the community.

McNeil and Kelly Cronin, who both serve on the board, say, “PDSSN has connected us with so many great friends and fellow advocates within the community. As parents, we all want the best for our children, and the PDSSN has helped us provide the very best for our daughter, Quinn.”

Breakfast Club 30th Anniversary High School Archetypes Today

ait! What? That was 30 years ago?! Judd Nelson, 55, told The Today Show. “Now I’m, like, that kid’s Dad.” Indeed. Let that sink in. It seems like yesterday to me. The Breakfast Club has become an iconic coming-of-age movie that resonates with many generations. We can relate. We remember our high school archetypes, the Criminal, Athlete, Brain, Princess or Basket Case. I’ll bet you even remember their names. I know I do.

And I remember the angst, the social posturing, and the d r a m a.

We are older and wiser now. Archetypes are a thing of the past. Right? Not really, some variation of social sorting exists in every aspect of society.

Maybe that was practice for us, but for others it was war. Choosing your friends, your fashion, and your lunch seat: these were critical decisions. They could make or break your high school experience. The Princess or Brain maneuvering through this minefield required cunning and strategy.

But what about now? I wondered if times have changed. With technology, social networks and global economies, surely we have evolved, haven’t we?

Well, not so fast. I polled my favorite millennials at game night. Here’s what I discovered…

First, I am pleased to inform you that we are still “cool.” We had the best movies. “Classics” like The Breakfast Club, Say Anything, Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, Clueless, Mean Girls and, of course, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Classics? Ouch!

As for the stereotypes, the labels may have changed but the faces are basically the same.

The Brain (Smart Kids) Alive and quite well. He or she has moved a little higher up the food chain. Today it’s cool to be smart. This is a larger group, frequently multicultural, and very tech-savvy.

The Athlete (Jocks, Sports, Bros) Rarely Valedictorian, but they now have much higher GPAs. This is largely due to stricter athletic requirements. They are still very popular and still move in packs.

The Princess (Popular Girls) Still the most attractive people we have ever seen. Intelligence is optional (or kept well-hidden). Their single matriculation goal is to look good (expensive and trendy). Many have their own Youtube Fashion Tutorial channel. Hovering nearby are the Plastics (Un-original, Wanna-be, Try-too-Hard). They are exact replicas. Popular by association.

The Criminal Often extremely intelligent, but they still major in academic bare minimums and minor in ISS (in-school suspension). They are resourceful! If contraband is what you need, they can “hook you up.” While their trademark look of disdain and apathy keep some away, others are still attracted to their “bad-boy” charm.

The Basket Case (Alternative, Emo, Goth) Is deliberately unconventional, intentionally invisible, and maintains a small circle of close friends.

There is some variation in groups and stereotypes depending on the size of the student body, but one thing remains constant: the teenage quest for identity. I recommend every parent watch The Breakfast Club with their teens.

It is fun to remember those times and it may even prompt some good conversations. We might say, “Be yourself, and don’t worry so much about what others see,” or we could let the movie say it for us.

or the past 30 years, Kersey Valley has been encouraging area visitors and residents to “Live Your Adventure!” For the past 30 years, countless people have; and this year marks many new additions and improvements to family favorites for generations.

“To be celebrating 30 years in business verifies to me that no matter how many times I heard ‘No,’ or ‘When will you focus on a real job?’ with enough passion and creativity dreams do come true,” said Tony Wohlgemuth, President of Kersey Valley, Inc. “We wanted to create something big to remember the 30thseason milestone. We decided to open two new attractions, the High Ropes Course and the Escape Games.”

“The High Ropes Course is an acrobatic workout that you’ll never forget,” said Wohlgemuth. “Our course contains beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of fun. And if that wasn’t enough, we also have a 34-foot high rock-climbing wall. The course is designed to challenge participants and groups of all

ability levels. Watch and learn from others, with more of a challenge as you go higher. It is designed for ages 10 and up who can reach at least five feet to operate the Smart Snap safety system. The weight requirements are that guests have to weigh less than 250 pounds and be in good physical condition. The course has three levels of difficulty across more than 50 challenges.” It is not to be missed!

The Escape Games can be just about anything you want them to be, from fun and historical to exciting and unnerving! “The Escape Games is our newest and most exciting attraction of the year, thus far,” said Wohlgemuth. “Imagine being locked in a room with no way out until one of you

can solve the puzzles to find the key! Step back in time in our Western Saloon room or try your luck in our Creepy Autopsy room. Come bring your friends, and join us in a nice, enjoyable game of clue-finding, or crank up the difficulty to see if you can escape in record time. It is a fun way to get your family, friends, or office group to work together to find a solution to escape the room through teamwork.”

Themed showpieces like those in The Escape Games are Kersey Valley’s specialty! “We have been creating themed environments for 30 years at Spookywoods,” said Wohlgemuth. “I knew we could take this new gaming concept to a higher level with our talented staff. For Spookywoods, we built a Haunted Manor that is the entrance to the main attraction.”

Even if a challenging ropes course or a spooky trip through the woods does not interest you, there is still plenty to do at Kersey Valley for people of all ages! “We have attractions that cater to young kids with our K-6th grade school field trips with the Gem Mining, ‘Bee Educated,’ Botanical Planting and Maize Adventure corn maze,” said Wohlgemuth. “The teenagers love the outdoor Kersey Valley Laser Tag and High Ropes course. The Kersey Valley Zipline is a perfect getaway for parents and even older adults. The escape rooms are great for the guests that may not want that physical activity-type attraction.”

Kersey Valley is open 365 days a year by reservation for the zipline, laser tag, escape games and high ropes course. Spookywoods and Maize Adventure open the last weekend in September and run through the first weekend in November.

can see the signs as well as the parents (the honeymoon phase which occurs after an outburst, the time of harmony, and the increasing level of tension rising to the ultimate explosion of violence in verbal and/or physical lashing out).

What characteristics do children living with domestic violence generally share? Some signs may be more apparent than others. Anxiety, distrust (especially toward the abuser’s gender), secretiveness, withdrawal, depression, or anger are a

omestic violence and children is a combination with farreaching impact on children’s lives and the decisions they make down the road. It is estimated that three to four million children (from ages three to 17) are at risk each year of encountering domestic violence in the US. In most cases, the victim is a female with a male abuser. Children face these encounters in a variety of ways.

Seeing: Unfortunately, some children see first-hand the assault on their parent. The violence, anger and verbal/physical abuse suddenly happening has got to be mind jarring. Many children end up hurt trying to protect their parent by either getting between them or just being close enough to get caught in the assault.

Hearing: If a parent realizes that violence is imminent, they may tell their children to go to their rooms and not come out until they are told it’s safe. Honestly, hearing but not really knowing what is happening may be worse than seeing. The imagination of the unknown is so intense, one cannot fathom how a child would feel in such a situation— hiding in his or her room, perhaps hearing screams and hitting sounds and unable to do anything, combined with wondering if the abuser is coming after them next.

Observation: Even if a child does not see or hear the violence, observing the aftermath can be just as troubling. Seeing bruises, cuts, blood and broken or otherwise damaged furniture and having to ask what happened this time. Made-up situations are useless.

The kids know.

Awareness: Assuming that children are unaware of what’s going on around them is futile. Children are tuned in to the atmosphere of the household (who’s happy, tense, mad, etc.). If domestic violence incidents occur on a regular basis, it’s likely the children are already expecting an outburst even before the parents. They

few to be aware of, if you suspect a child may be in a domestic violence situation.

Children living in this type of environment are likely to feel a sense of abandonment. Parents living the cycle of violence can become so centered on either surviving the incidents, or trying to avoid or keep the situation from escalating, that those endeavors take priority over everything else. Their children’s needs for physical, emotional and psychological nurturing are neglected or ignored completely.

Children may act out, may turn to alcohol or drugs, can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or turn to self-injury as coping mechanisms. A large number run away to get away from the violence.

Sadly, the environment they’ve lived in goes with them, and if help is not available to them, the cycle will likely continue. Children who see/hear/observe abuse with no attempt to stop the violence begin over time to accept that behavior as a normal relationship and may, later in life, repeat the same patterns.

What can be done to break the cycle? Action on the part of someone a child trusts (minister, school counselor, doctor, relative) encouraging the child to talk about what’s going on in their home life.

Keeping secrets has probably become a way of life, but talking can be the door that opens to hope for these children.

The cycle has to be broken. No one should be destined to a life of domestic violence. Call your local hot lines for information on ways to help.

Classical Music: Little Known Facts

eptember is classical music month. While the beauty and grandeur of the classics is without question, there are some obscure, little knownS facts that are attributed to the composers or classics in general. So, for the “Did you know that…?” fans among us, here goes. . . .

• A violin is made of more than 70 different pieces of wood. Dogfish skin was used to sand violins in the 18th century.

• Franz Liszt had numerous requests for locks of his hair. So many, in fact, that he got a dog and sent pieces of its fur instead.

(They were their generation’s rock stars.)

Lunch Box Dilemma

ith busy family schedules, it’s hard to be consistent when packing your children’s lunches. Many families struggle with making packed lunches, even though we know it may be healthier and save money. Check out these tips from the experts at Brenner FIT to solve lunch-packing dilemmas.

“I just can’t get to the grocery store.”

It is challenging to make time to go shopping. Try designating one day of the week to shop. Even setting a specific time during the day can help you follow through.

“There’s no time in the morning to pack lunches.”

Pack lunches the night before. Get your children involved. You may be surprised that your kids can pack their own lunches from food you provide.

“We don’t know what to pack.”

Leftovers can be your friend, and they are so easy to pack. If you prefer typical lunch foods, planning ahead can make it easier. Plan five to six lunch options you and your kids enjoy. Then you can rotate two to three of those lunch ideas throughout the week. Also, get your children involved in planning. They are more likely to eat their lunches if they have a part in planning.

“We want to make it healthy, but aren’t sure how.”

A simple way to make your lunches healthier is to model them after the balanced plate. This means a quarter of your plate should be lean protein; one quarter, whole grains/starchy vegetables; and one half, fruits and/or non-starchy vegetables. A mix of three to four food groups for your lunch helps fill you up and keep you satisfied until the next meal.

Grandparenting

from a Distance

G

randparents have a reputation for providing wonderful stories, unconditional love, far too much candy, and giving grandchildren ideas on how to get into mild mischief, much to their parents’ dismay.

A parent will look on in shock as the same people who made them earn their money are suddenly digging into pockets to find bills and coins for their grandchildren.

Children always know that no matter how much trouble they may get into, rescue and comfort is unfailingly available at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house.

But what if that house is far away? Unfortunately, it is no longer as simple as “over the river and through the woods” to a grandparent’s home.

These days, many families must maintain longdistance familial relationships. There are many reasons for this, including job transfers, military families, young adults choosing to settle in their college towns, the global business economy, and even the weather.

Many elderly people have difficulties with extreme heat and cold, and relocate to milder climates.

Most would acknowledge that there are important benefits of multigenerational family relationships. It gives children a link to their cultural and family histories. Children who can rarely sit still will sit on a grandparent’s knee for hours, listening to stories about their pasts. And frankly, being spoiled by a grandparent makes a child feel special and valued.

Care packages are also an excellent way to make a child feel special, particularly if you include things that the child is interested in and enjoys. It is essential that a grandparent know what television show or movie is

Thankfully, there are many ways to maintain contact. Phone calls, letters, e-mail, weekend and summer trips are great ways to do this. However, thinking outside of the box can excite a child and further the relationship even more. It is important that a grandparent keep up with technology. You can be sure that growing children will do so!

How many times have parents and grandparents had to ask a child how to work a certain program, system, or even a cell phone? Kids are tech-savvy, and in order to maintain contact, it should be a priority for grandparents to learn a few tricks themselves. Luckily, there are scads of easy ways to do this.

Texting, for example, is a great way to keep in contact with teenagers. You will rarely find a teenager without their phone plastered to them. Short texts asking about their day or sending a joke are favorable ways to keep grandparents in the front of the teen’s mind. Another example is learning how to video chat.

Of course, it is a nice way to speak to a teenager, but even younger children get excited to see Grandma and Grandpa on the screen. A grandparent can make video chatting extra special by reading books, singing songs and playing games with a child.

There are countless unique ways to show love across the miles. Plant a bush or a tree at your home when each grandchild is born. Take pictures of it each year to send at the child’s birthday to show how it has grown with them.

Invent simple, secret word codes and send letters in code. Keep up with pop culture (as much as possible without pulling out your hair) and chat with them about it. This may all sound like a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the end, both for the grandparent and the grandchild. Rudy Giuliani put it best when he said, “What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance.

The Home Maze

& Pumpkin Patch at The Farm at The Children’s Home

This year, The Farm at The Children’s Home will host their first The Home Maze & Pumpkin Patch from September 19th through November 1st, 2015. The maze is designed in the shape of The Children’s Home logo of a barn, child and horse in the sunshine.

Maze 411 Entry to The Home Maze & Pumpkin Patch is $10 for ages 12 and up, $7 for seniors over 65, and for kids, ages 4−11. Kids three and under are admitted free. Discounted group rates available for schools and community organizations that schedule a trip during the week.

Concessions will be available on site for purchase.

Hours of The Home Maze & Pumpkin Patch are September 19th through November 1st: Saturdays, 10 a.m.−6 p.m.

Not Your Average Maze Always with an eye on sustainability, the farmers at The Farm at The Children’s Home chose to create The Home Maze not out of the usual corn crop, but of sorghum. You may be familiar with “sorghum molasses,” but sorghum is also a grass and grain that can later be used to feed the animals on The Farm.

“Sorghum was chosen because, unlike corn, it is non-GMO. The community has expressed to us that it wants The Farm to use organic growing practices as much as we can. Planting a GMO crop like corn would not have been in keeping with this philosophy. As a bonus, we can feed the sorghum to our cows afterward and keep that feed source non-GMO as well,” said Shannon English, Business Director at The Farm.

The Maze will feature a game in which maze-runners must find checkpoints and complete game activities along the way. Successful maze-runners will complete the tasks at each checkpoint. “The object is to solve a puzzle while completing the maze, so having a large group can either help you or hinder your team’s progress, depending on how good your teamwork skills are,” explained English.

Additional Activities Your toddlers won’t be left out! Let them toddle through the Toddler Hay Maze and enjoy the Cow Train. Take family pictures at the special Photo Cutout. Choose a pumpkin and see how far you can launch it with the “Pumpkin Chunker!” Parents can also enjoy the Parent Hangout while their kids take on the maze challenge! (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.)

Pumpkins & Produce Pumpkins of all sizes will also be for sale at The Farm during The Home Maze operational hours, as well as fall produce grown on the farm, including kale, broccoli, beets, cauliflower and carrots.

ow many of us are aware that Sunday, September 13th, is National Grandparent’s Day? I know I wasn’t, until I met Debbie Linville. Those of us lucky enough to have close relationships with our grandparents know how special those relationships can be. The strong, committed, never-faltering love a grandparent gives is unparalleled, and no one knows this love better than Debbie.

“With each passing year, I am more keenly aware of just how influential my grandparents have been in helping shape the individual I am today,” said Debbie. “Their unwavering belief in my ability to accomplish anything I set out to do, and their unconditional love and support have been a common thread in the tapestry of my life. I spent most weekends as a young child at my grandparent’s home. I remember those carefree days as ones bathed in love and sprinkled with laughter—listening to tales from the good old days, catching lightning bugs in a jar, playing dominoes and pick-up sticks, running through the sun-kissed sheets hanging on the clothesline and playing croquet in the backyard. I realize my experiences (beautifully simple and ordinary) may not mirror those of every child, but oh, how I wish that they could. I believe that loving, devoted grandparents play a critical, necessary and highly beneficial role in the lives of their grandchildren. Whether it is for an occasional visit, Sunday lunches, or a permanent living arrangement, time spent together is a very special thing!”

Debbie, author of two new books focused on sharing the love of grandparents, learned a great deal of her storytelling ability from her grandfather. “My grandfather, who passed away last year at 97, was larger than life; and the stories he told were larger still,” said Debbie. “With each tale (no matter how exaggerated), he lovingly passed along a piece of our family history with the unstated directive that I do the same with my grandchildren. My grandmother, whose hands are never still, always doing for others, has helped shape my life in profound ways. Through the years she has shared important truths and afforded me a window seat on her life, so I could better understand what it meant to love others well in the midst of the daily part of living. These two books are a tribute to my grandparents in appreciation for the selfless investment they made in my life… each in their own way. It is my hope that the words I have penned to honor my grandparents will also honor grandmothers and grandfathers everywhere.”

The first book, titled, Grandma’s Handgrown Love – Growing Love, Hand in Hand, tells the story of Debbie’s grandmother’s love of gardening and how that love translated into memories in other areas. “The fact that her name, Hyacinth, is a beautiful flower, made this an obvious choice as an author. The pulling together of a lifetime of memories into a single bouquet at the end of the story was important to me, as was my desire to show the hands of the grandmother and grandchild aging through the years. Just as she once held my hand as a toddler (with my wobbly legs and shuffling feet), at 96 (with her wobbly legs and shuffling feet), it is my turn and my joy to hold her hand.”

rowing up in Maryland, Dr. Elisa Stein always knew she would be a physician. Her grandfather, a prominent specialist in Ear, Nose and Throat and Ophthalmology, was her most influential inspiration. He dedicated himself to caring for his community and strived to provide access of care to all. Dr. Stein also credits her colleagues for encouraging her to pursue a surgical career. “During my eight years of training, there were many women surrounding me that I considered mentors. They demonstrated how to balance family, professional success, leadership and teaching.”

Dr. Stein’s rotation in surgery as a third-year medical student sparked her interest in becoming a surgeon. So, after five years in general surgery, Dr. Stein completed a three-year fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Every Kid Needs to Know

avigating new circumstances is tough as a kid. Childhood can often be filled with uncertainty and awkwardness. There are a few basic skills, however, that can help any child feel more comfortable when he or she encounters new situations and enable them to meet the demands of any social encounter. Here are a few things every kid needs to know.

1.Every kid needs to know the magic words “Please” and “Thank you.” These words are common courtesy and really cannot be overused. No child has ever been accused of being too polite.

2.Every kid needs to know how to make eye contact. This one can be hard for kids who are shy, but eye contact is not only a way of showing welcome and respect, it’s also the very first connection people make with a potential new friend.

3.Every kid needs to know how to talk to an adult. Linguists call this code-switching, which basically refers to one’s ability to modulate tone, topic and familiarity based on the appropriateness of the situation. We all do it, but knowing how, when, and why can be tough for a kid without explicit instruction.

4.Every kid needs to know how to wait his or her turn. Games are a great way to teach kids patience and turn-taking. Most children have built-in fairness radar and understand the need for taking turns, even if they are not overly fond of doing so.

6.Every kid needs to know how to lose gracefully. If your child is playing sports, this is a great opportunity to teach them resilience and graciousness (granted, you ignore the other parents screaming on the sidelines). Kids can’t win every time, but they also don’t have to pitch a fit when things don’t go their way.

7.Every kid needs to know how to accept a horrible gift. It’s going to happen. Someone at some point will wrap in brightly colored paper a gift no child would ever choose and hand it over with cheerful oblivion. Every kid needs to know how to grin, bear it, show appreciation anyway, and donate later.

8.Every kid needs to know how to shake hands. Kids may be reluctant to touch a stranger, but this common form of greeting is a must for good manners.

9.Every kid needs to know how to be discrete. That means asking probing questions in private. It’s normal for kids to be curious; however, setting some boundaries can save parents and those around them from embarrassing moments.

10.Every kid needs to know how to say “I’m sorry.” Let’s face it, everyone makes mistakes, and kids are going to make their fair share. It’s how they learn to handle those mistakes that will determine how much they can grow from them.

5.Every kid needs to know how to take a compliment. That means saying “Thank you,” or “You’re so kind,” and maybe even paying a compliment in return.

A Father’s Perspective

After all, that’s when the flowers, plants, and trees start to bloom; when nature’s animals come out to play and everything seems to come alive. However, when you’re a kid growing up, fall is the time of year when everything starts new, because that’s when school starts back. And with this new season come some of the same “old” problems, the main one of which is stress. The start of the new school year can be incredibly stressful for our children. Being bombarded with new people to get to know, new subjects, projects, homework, tests, grades, extracurricular activities, sports, friends and more, to go along with the simple psychology of growing older, is enough to make anyone stress out.

Along these lines, I saw a book recently entitled, Will You Still Love Me If I Don’t Win? A Guide for Parents of Young Athletes (Taylor Trade Publishing, 2000), by Christopher Anderson. Just as the title implies, the book provides insight for parents on how to use emotional training to go along with the physical training our children receive when participating in sports. It would appear that the intent is to boost their confidence on both achievement and personal levels.

Although the book is focused on young athletes, the concept could also apply to any child.

I know when I first saw it, I thought, how true the title is. I’ve personally seen children who strive to achieve and succeed only for their parent’s approval. And each time I witness this, it makes me cringe at what they must be feeling and going through. Don’t get me wrong, I want my children to do their best and achieve as much as they can in life, but I never want them to think my love is based in any part on their

success level. When you’re a parent, this is your first real introduction to “unconditional love.” And unconditional means just what it says, without condition. The problem arises when children don’t realize this, and think their parents are disappointed in them because they made a bad grade in school, or made a poor decision, and think that disappointment directly affects their love for the child. We know it’s not related in any way, but often the children don’t understand this.

That’s why it’s so important to separate the action or event from the relationship with our children. Knowing that, although we want their best, we can’t always expect the best results, because they’re only human, just like us.

I know one that of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn as a parent is to understand that, unfortunately, sometimes we have to let them fall (metaphorically) to allow them to understand and learn from their misfortune. I’m bad about giving my children proactive advice on what to do or not to do to avoid something we don’t want to happen. Initially, I just thought it was part of being a good parent and offering guidance to my children. That is, until one day, when my teenager, after hearing some of my proactive advice, recommended that sometimes I just needed to let him make his own mistakes, so he could learn from them. That’s a pretty impactful statement coming from such a young person, but it worked.

I got the message, and now I’m careful to restrict my advice only to when it’s needed. He appreciates it, and as far as I’ve witnessed, he seems to be learning pretty well on his own.

So, as we each adjust to the new season, remember that whatever happens, it’s not the end of the world; and let our children understand that as well. Then, hopefully, they’ll do fine and both sides can breathe easier and enjoy life a little better with less stress in the process.

f you pay attention to commercials at all, you can probably name at least one drug for hair loss, one for migraines, two for allergies, three for depression and countless prescriptions for a weak bladder. Unfortunately, these prescriptions—and many others—come with a price tag. If you care to experience a shock that leaves you slack-jawed, try filling a few prescriptions without having prescription drug coverage.

Most agree that medication prices are higher than ever before. Even generic medication costs have risen. For those who are insured, deductibles, coinsurance rates and copayments have increased, making the patient’s out-of-pocket portion quite alarming. So who is to blame? Pharmaceutical companies? Insurers? Government regulations? It pretty much depends on whom you ask, as they all point fingers at each other. No matter who is at fault, the result is that patients are paying more than in years past for their medical needs. Unfortunately, this has forced some patients to accrue a great deal of debt, while others forgo the medicines they need—putting themselves at great risk. For people with serious health problems, it is literally a life-or-death issue.

An excellent and easy way to offset these costs is the use of prescription drug savings cards. There are a plethora of cards available, through many different companies and groups. Some cards have eligibility restrictions, such as age or income limits. Some cannot be used by people with health insurance. Many can be quite beneficial, while others reduce rates very little, if at all.

All of this can be frustratingly confusing, especially for a sick consumer trying not to empty his or her bank account to feel better. Adding to the problem is the fact that a few of these “discount” cards are nothing more than scams, charging a monthly or yearly fee without providing the discount needed.

It is important to note that membership groups such as the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the American Automobile Association (AAA) offer their own free prescription discount cards to their members.

Ultimately, attempting to slog your way through the miry bog of drug costs and discount offers can cause you to pull out your hair in frustration, which only results in the need for one of those pattern baldness prescriptions. It is a vicious cycle. The most important tip of all is to do your homework. There are truly impressive discounts available to those who look for them. While perusing for the best prices, remember that there are too many free options available to be forced to pay a fee. None of us wants to go broke trying to save money. Doing so can result in the side effects of confusion, anger, sadness and continued financial strain. And really, who needs more side effects?

Small Stories for a Big World

I

n my life, I have had the good fortune to meet many remarkable people. Often, they are men and women who help children in one way or another.

Some work with children struggling with learning how to read. Some coach track teams. Some make sure that children with mental or physical challenges have what they need as they go through the day.

Whatever their focus, these people have a number of traits in common. All of them treat the children and everyone else they meet along the way with respect. When they come upon a child who gives himself a hard time, they do their best to point the child down the path that leads to an understanding that each of us is special. They will say that they get as much as, if not more than, the kids get from their time together.

When I am around such people I feel refreshed.

One such person is Art Blevins, the supervisor of the Hanes Hosiery Community Center. For more than 25 years—with the help of other special people—he has been making Hanes Hosiery a place where young people want to spend their time, because they know the people there will take care of them.

When those young people grow up, many come back and thank Art for what he did for them over the years. In my imagination there exists an institution called the Bank of Goodwill. There, people’s thoughts of appreciation or gratitude for what someone has done

become deposits to a person’s account. Art’s balance in the Bank of Goodwill makes him a rich man.

Knowing what Art does for children and how he treats people in general, people are inclined to say, “Yes,” when he needs something. Over the years, business people have provided T-shirts, trophies, Chik-fil-A coupons, hot dogs and pizzas for such enterprises as the annual “Hang the Net” basketball extravaganza, which Art “retired” from this summer after 25 years.

The first time I met Art, I received one of those trophies. It served as a thank you for being the sole adult participant in a hot-dog-eating contest for kids at the recreation center. Art made sure that one of the younger contestants would win by serving me foot-long hot dogs while the kids gobbled regular ones. Afterward, the winner asked whether I would swap trophies because my thank-you trophy was bigger than his champion trophy. I told him, “No,” because mine had my name it. Whenever that has come to mind in the years since, I wish I had peeled off the plate with my name on it and made the exchange.

If you spend any time around Art, you can’t help but notice how modest he is. I know he understands the importance of serving others, but I can’t see him ever suggesting that what he does is a big deal.

It is, though.

In just a short time, you may discover listening is difficult when particular sounds are not heard clearly; and perhaps you have missed the meaning of the sentence. Feeling frustrated? It may feel similar to being immersed in the culture of a European country where you only recognize a few key words.

Further, imagine how difficult it would be to try to have a conversation or listen to a story!

If I asked you to convey what you heard, would you feel comfortable responding, or need time to “process”? With this example, you now understand how someone with a language or learning processing disorder (LPD) feels.

Parents initially believe the problem is connected to audiology, since some children around the age of three become sensitive to sounds like a blender or mixer, sirens or unexpected crashes or bangs. In fact, the ear and its functions are intact and working properly. The problem stems from how the brain processes and interprets information. Young children often have difficulty speaking clearly and pronouncing sounds correctly. For instance, the word

“dat” may be used instead of “that,” or “free” replace the number “three.” But during the most important years of learning, a child will sometimes not be diagnosed until the age of six or seven. The good news is that children do respond well when early interventions are in place; however, this does not eliminate the need for testing and treatment of older children and teens. An audiologist will perform the necessary tests, combining listening at rapidly increasing speeds with levels of noise, to determine what a child needs to hear well. For every problem that exists for a child with LPD, there are ways to ease problems and frustrations at home and in the classroom.

In Noisy or Crowded Environments Noise and sound emanating from a variety of locations can distract a child and cause him or her to lose focus. Thus, parents might want to create a basic signal or word to ease a child through bustling environments. In a classroom, some children have difficulty separating background noise from spoken words.

Imagine listening to a radio and having static interfere with a specific program. For a child with APD, it could be the sounds of water filtering into a fish tank or noise coming through an open window; therefore, children need

to change the acoustics of a room by sitting in the front. Ear buds, too, will help a child to eliminate distracting sounds when working independently.

Participating and Understanding Conversations Develop a signal to focus your child before giving “small chunks” of simple directions.

These could be as simple as a smile and direct eye contact.

Also, use words that identify the main point. For instance, instead of stating, “Go get ready for school,” say, “brush your teeth, get your backpack, and put on your coat.” Repeating the same schedule day after day will help a child listen and remember several directions at once. In addition, a child will need to repeat the information to show he understands.

Reading Retaining information is one of the challenges of learning to read.

One modification would be to assign reading in small sections.

Following along with the text and listening to an audio book could help a child connect hearing language with seeing the spelled text.

A few strategies are: • highlight main ideas; • convey thoughts into a tape recorder; • record main points on a dryerase board.

Writing When writing, a child who has had difficulty mimicking sounds and exchanging key letters in words may run words together or drop suffix endings. Errors are not likely to be identified unless a child can restate what he hears.

In lieu of a tape recorder or using graphic organizers, he or she might greatly benefit from having a trusted partner. (How do we learn unless our mistakes are discussed, and we take the time to correct them?)

Formulating Thoughts and Communicating Similar to most students in reacting to each other, adults can create a wonderful relationship when a child with APD feels comfortable asking that statements or directions be repeated. And, it is perfectly normal for time to pass without a response. This is because the child needs time to process in order to fully understand.

The road is long when a child has difficulties hearing, processing, understanding, learning and communicating. It is hard to imagine how learning can take place if our ears are full of water.

How isolating it could be; yet, when early intervention takes place, a child can blossom and make the day’s struggles into a pathway toward independence.

he words are spoken, “Okay, I’m leaving. Bye!” As the door is halfway opened, painful screams are heard somewhere close by. A dad or mom will wonder, “What just happened?” While we are aware of “separation anxiety,” another term to understand is “object permanence.” It means that you exist even when you are not in sight. Before their first birthday, children become aware that you do leave and are somewhere beyond them, which results in anxious feelings of separation. Now that you have disappeared, your child will react, through tears and screams, if only to prevent you from leaving. We know tearful or tantrum-based goodbyes are a perfectly normal part of child development; yet, we cannot help but feel heartbroken by our child’s panic. We know we can say, “Daddy and Mommy are coming back,” but until the child believes it, there are ways to make the “goodbye” less traumatic.

Start Early Not every child experiences separation anxiety; however, your child does need practice being away from you. Start by developing a consistent routine by transitioning your child to a baby sitter or a child caregiver professional. Since children love to interact with their environment, parents can begin by establishing a level of trust.

Start with greeting the caregiver alongside your child, and also welcoming any children in the room by name.

Explaining the Routine Comforting a child is part of parenting; therefore, start the routine either at bedtime or at breakfast, explaining what the day’s adventures will hold. While this allows children to understand what to expect, it also provides a “next” during difficult moments. Once children understand that new adventures are fun, they, too, will learn to appreciate all types of experiences. In addition, it’s okay for parents to say, “I know you will miss me. I will miss you whole bunches, too!”

Goodbyes Are Important!

Trust is the key for children to believe in the notion that Daddy and Mommy will return.

Children should not be tricked into thinking a toy or playtime with another child will alter the “disappearance” of Daddy and Mommy.

Research has proved that children adapt to their situation if they have the opportunity to see their parents physically leave and are given the chance to say goodbye. Parents can spend a minute or two with their child in his/her environment, playing “peek-a-boo” or reading a book. If actions and tones are consistent day after day, these rituals will help provide your child (and you) with a feeling of security.

Changes Will Be Noticeable Separation anxiety is a challenge for both the child and the parents. Eager to see their child after either a brief or long separation, parents hope the connection hasn’t changed; however, arriving to full trust takes time. Some children may regress by engaging in behaviors parents have never seen before, such as thumb sucking or having bathroom accidents. Never fear, parents—this, too, will pass.

Older Children Experience Anxiety This may be the first time two- or three-yearolds leave the routine of home and attend a half-day preschool. It can be an anxious for parents as well as a child; yet, the same rules apply. Preschool teachers will be there to assist in the transition of welcoming a new student into the classroom environment. Hang in there! Transitions take time; but soon, you’ll be amazed at how well your child is able to give great hugs and warm sentiments, and then, he or she will be off to greet a classmate and start playing.

Routines Teach Children Responsibility

s a former teacher, I was giddy with excitement to attend my first parent conference. Beyond learning about my daughter’s educational accomplishments, I was curious to hear the teacher’s assessment of her personality and character as a rising kindergartener. You see, there’s more than just an aptitude to learn lessons in a classroom; children must listen and comply, follow through with directions, and be an active member of the classroom.

As parents, we know our children’s strengths and weaknesses, talents and gifts. Through guidance, praise and routine, we encourage our children to learn those valuable, simple lessons that will be ingrained under the banner of responsibility.

Before a child can say, “Mommy, I help!” there is a keen desire on to her part to follow in your every footstep. She may want to hand you a dish from the dishwasher or aid in emptying the clothes from the laundry basket.

These are signs that perhaps your child is ready for something more than just the completion of daily routines, such as brushing teeth, getting dressed, eating a meal and leaving the home.

Many preschoolers are skilled enough to assist with household tasks. With repetition, children will be happy to follow older members of the family by taking utensils, plastic dishes and cups to the sink. If clothes are left on the bathroom floor, introduce a hamper. Since cleaning up messes is a rule in a classroom, encourage your child to gather items, such as peanut butter and bread, in preparation for making lunch. Every single routine helps a child experience his or her “part” in the family dynamic.

Using the word “we” can make some tasks appear less daunting, and avoid associating tasks with a reward. Before long, parents will rejoice in hearing, “Look what I did by myself!” without any reminders.

Imagine all the other acts your child is witnessing just by being a passenger, or at home with a parent. She is learning how to engage in conversations and when to use polite wording such as, “It is nice to meet you,” “Thank you,” and “You are very welcome.” Your child is watching you follow through on those little everyday 64 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

commitments and, for example, keep your promise to spend time at the park or buy a sibling new shoes. Every interaction in the neighborhood and community, or participation in community service, will also directly influence your child’s own role in the outside world.

While kindergarteners can assist with basic kitchen tasks, such as setting the table or meal preparation, or folding laundry with supervision, or cleaning their rooms, responsibility can be assigned gradually. Mary Stevens-Jones writes, “My son at a young age loved helping. He would separate the dark and light colors of laundry and help me prepare meals. My daughter, on the other hand, became distracted and abandoned tasks.

They both needed something different. He could work independently, and she loved it when he would help and encourage her. I can now see how those initial characteristics have formed the teens that they are today, with different, yet amazing, skills.”

As parents, the question arises for us, “Should we interfere and save our child from experiencing disappointment?” It would be so easy to take her— again!—the book she needs for class, or the sneakers for this evening’s basketball practice.

Parenting is indeed hard. Too often, the most memorable lessons stem from simple mistakes and forgetfulness. When children are held accountable, they begin to understand responsibility.

By high school, teens facing living apart from the family may need to learn how to establish monthly and annual routines. Living within a budget and paying bills on time are just as important as showing a teen how to continue maintenance on a vehicle. As challenging as it is to establish a household of one, young adults need preparation and to understand consequences before they go out into the world.

An 18-month-old child who can drop his sippy cup in the sink is praised by an observing parent. A youth who begins a community service project because it makes him feel good may be commended as an outstanding citizen. Teaching responsibility encourages today’s youth to become tomorrow’s self-starters and leaders.

Grace Shore, a sophomore at Starmount High School, plays three sports a year; namely tennis, basketball and track. She is, in fact, a student who is choosing to play sports over down-time and evenings with friends. Like most student athletes, Grace agrees there is a fine balance that comes with the promise of being a member of the team.

She says, “I would rather play than just come home from school. I like the momentum of staying busy. At the high school level, my teachers are much more strict than most. On a game day, I have to turn in work or projects before school starts, if I want to play. Coaches and teachers communicate to make sure all the student athletes are not slacking. We all know that playing means getting great grades. It’s shameful to be kicked out for failing. I had to learn time management. I knew what I had to do to give my all to the sport.”

In today’s world, the expectations are much higher for students to achieve more at a younger age, and with higher levels of stress. Kenny Morphis, Head Gymnastics Coach and co-owner of Salem Gymnastics Sports Center, is constantly asked one question, “How will my child be able to spend so many hours in the gym and maintain her grades?” In working in upper-level gymnastics for over thirty years, Morphis has learned three facts about student athletes.

1.“Athletes either will crave more time in the gym or will move onto another activity. When a talented athlete is paired with a sport they love, they grow in so many ways

3.“Pulling a child out of a sport for low grades is not recommended.

First, talk with the teacher and coach to determine what the student athlete needs. Don’t assume more free time will lead to better grades.”

Erinn Thompson, a former student and college athlete, speaks from experience and with pride on the topic of sports and its need for growth and education. Thompson writes, “Much purpose comes from sport, especially at the middle- and high-school levels. Education provides an individual with what they need to serve their role in society; the same education provides an athlete with the basic understanding of any game and the fundamentals involved. Without education, an athlete is without foundation; if extra-curricular sport is prioritized over education, a student- athlete’s multi-dimensionality can be compromised. We are just that...student-athletes. The value of education always ranks first.

Knowledge is what allows every athlete to compete and succeed in the athletic arena; the source of that knowledge is education, which carries the student athlete into the next chapter, ‘outside the lines.’ It is a time when each of us is forced to discover who we are, independent of athletics.”

The Senior Year of High School...

fter a year of strain comprising countless deadlines, a rigorous academic year, and planning for life beyond high school, the outlook may appear brighter under that grand title of senior. For many, it is the best year of all; however, there are many new circumstances seniors will need to anticipate.

A Year of Final Moments Reaching the top of the ladder will lead to many bittersweet moments. It will be a year of final experiences and nostalgic goodbyes until you, too, must climb down and give someone else the top position. It will be important for students to remain focused and make each moment count.

Your Grades Still Matter You have spent many years working toward this very moment and are looking forward to the next big life event, graduating. Students will need to keep in mind that life beyond high school is greatly influenced by this last year. While seniors may believe that letter of acceptance is final, colleges will rescind the invitation if their final transcript shows a sharp change in performance. (This also includes extracurricular activities, clubs and volunteer work.) Therefore, devise a viable plan of action to maintain strong grades. “Senioritis” will arrive when you least expect it. Consider this year a pre-college test. Next year, you will need a few tricks up your sleeve to help balance the new freedoms of college life with those early morning classes five days a week.

Time Management Will Be Key Before students agree to one more responsibility, especially increasing the number of hours working or volunteering, first consider answering the following questions.

• How many evenings can you sacrifice with your current class schedule?

• Will you have time to continue all of your extracurricular activities and clubs?

• Have you looked at the requirements and deadlines to complete your college application?

• As a junior, you dreamed about having time to enjoy social outings, spontaneous moments with friends, and time at home with the family.

Is there time in your schedule to have fun?

Students may need a written plan to organize the weekday’s events, and visually see how much time is left for family, friends, fun and self.

College Schedule The year will be full of big decisions, and the most challenging may be choosing a college or university. It may be wise to consider creating a checklist for the college planning process and entering specific tasks and deadlines on your calendar.

Here are two suggestions.

• Finalize the college list and, if possible, visit the top choices to determine whether a school is right for you. Experiencing campus life and attending a class has helped many students make that final decision.

• Writing the essay may feel daunting, but students cannot put off this particular task. Instead, spend a few days writing down thoughts and considering each paragraph. Beyond the planning, your words need to come from the heart and convey the impression of you as a memorable individual.

Spend Time with Family As a senior, you will have places to go and great things to do.

Keep in mind, as you call out, “See you later, Dad and Mom,” or wave goodbye to your younger siblings, that your time living at home is limited. College freshman are often surprised by how difficult it is to come home for a weekend, especially if the drive extends beyond two hours; so keep your promises and spend quality time with each member of your family, especially the younger sibling who thinks of you as their hero.

Yes, make this year count. Next year, you will be reminiscing about more than just high school days and classmates. You’ll soon wish you had more time with your family, so enjoy being at the top. In the blink of an eye, your new title will be “college freshman.”

here are many addictions out there.

Some people are addicted to drugs, some are addicted to food, some are addicted to alcohol and some are addicted to items or activities many of us never knew existed. Obviously, some addictions are more well known than others, and because of this, they typically receive more attention and have greater access to assistance. When a loved one has one of these less-talked-about addictions that can be dangerous, it is vital for family and friends to be supportive and find constructive ways to help.

When Sandie Mauk discovered that her daughter, Grace, was cutting herself, she was in shock. Along with her husband, Paul, Sandie knew she had to get informed and do whatever was necessary to help her daughter.

“When Grace was cutting, she had been reaching out to other young girls who were cutting,” said Sandie. “Her heart has been bent toward helping others since even before her father and I knew what was happening. I decided to share her story primarily because I needed to let some people know what we were dealing with, so we could have some support.

Originally, I asked Grace if I could write to a small group of friends called My Sistas, whom I had been writing to for several years, because I knew they would love us well and pray for Grace. Grace said I could do that, and I gave her the e-mail before sending it to the Sistas, so she could delete or change anything about that she wasn’t comfortable with. She chose not to change it at all. Shortly after the e-mail went out, I asked Grace if she thought it would be helpful to others if the e-mail was made more public on my blog. Again, she agreed, and I posted the original letter to the blog on cowbird

Taking things a step further, Sandie and Grace now want that story shared with even more people, so awareness can increase. “There are several goals I hope will be accomplished by sharing in Forsyth Family,” said Sandie.

“I want to honor Grace’s courage to be publicly seen as a former cutter. I hope other girls (and boys) who cut are encouraged by Grace. I want other parents to be aware that this is happening, and it isn’t just happening to the kids that act like they are struggling with life; even if everything seems calm on the surface, there can be turmoil below that no one sees. I want people to see God’s redemption in this story.”

Grace’s father was also taken aback by the news of Grace’s cutting and now has beautiful advice for others dealing with this addiction.

“I was shocked, saddened, worried and felt like an utter failure as a parent for not being more in tune with how my daughter could be struggling to this degree under the same roof and not having any clue,” said Paul. “I was concerned for her safety and fearful for how to address it. You cannot carry your struggles alone. You were never meant to. You need to share with someone whom you feel safe with.

Recognize it is a family issue to wrestle with...you are not the only one impacted by this. There is help, and it is a coping strategy of which better ones can be developed and discovered.”

Grace is described by her parents as a perfectionist. “She always performs well,” said Sandie. “Her father and I never worried about

her grades, because she never seemed like she was struggling. But inside, she worried that even making a B in a class would mean she was a failure. She made everything look normal and calm while she was really in turmoil inside. I think like with so many of the struggles our kids are facing, whether it’s performance, grades, relationships, identity, whatever, the conversation has to start and end with ‘I love you.’ Seek out strong counsel from professionals who know what they are dealing with. Grace had a wonderful counselor named Kristin Reiners with Kinderton Counseling, who helped her learn to deal with the cutting. My best advice to someone who is cutting would be to put the blade away, and go tell someone you trust. Tell your parents, a teacher, a friend, a friend’s parents or a school counselor. Tell someone until someone helps you get help, if you can’t do it yourself.”

Above all, the person with the most insight into helping someone who is cutting is Grace. “The solution is not to take away every sharp object—that only drives to desperation,” said Grace. “You can take away knives at a dinner table, but it’ll probably never cross your mind to take away your daughter’s earrings.

Encourage trust and say, ‘I love you.’ Say, ‘I love you,’ naturally, not as scheduled reminders. Take the time to make it meaningful. Know that what you’re doing is not crazy. It’s been done for centuries, but that doesn’t make it the best option. Find someone you trust. Don’t ask them to take anything away from you. Ask them to be there when you want to hurt yourself. If your hands are busy talking to someone, they aren’t busy cutting. Cutting is a valid addiction. Don’t let anyone tell you that it isn’t. Cutting isn’t something to be taken lightly, or just be swept under the rug like it isn’t happening.”

Minute for Your Minister Masked Intentions Forever Family

By Tami Rumfelt I’m friends with a couple, we’ll call them Joe and Sue, who have opened their homes and hearts to foster children. They mostly take in newborn babies, loving and caring for them until a “forever family” can be found.

Joe and Sue go way above and beyond the job requirements of foster parents. They realize that these children’s adoptive parents are missing the first days, weeks, or months of their child’s life, and they do everything possible to fill in those blanks. They take tons of pictures every day and write down all of the baby’s “firsts.” When the babies they foster arrive at their permanent homes, they come with a scrapbook full of pictures and information chronicling their young lives.

This couple treats these little babies as if they were their own, even though they know that their time with them is limited. And, every late-night feeding, each cuddle and kiss, and even every diaper change makes it harder to say goodbye. But, Sue says, she knows that the babies have a loving mom and dad who long to bring them home, so she is able to let each little one go, knowing they are being sent into the arms of loving parents.

hen I was a sophomore at UNCChapel Hill, I needed another history credit, so I signed up for a class titled The History of Country Music.

I liked country music, but was mostly motivated to add this particular course to my load by the thought (and title alone), that it would be a much easier alternative to other history courses offered that semester. Was I ever wrong! Lesson learned: Don’t judge a class by its course tittle. Regardless, the class exposed me to some incredibly talented artists and musicians, as well their stories and histories, which forever shaped the art of music; it was a catalyst for a deep appreciation of the country music scene.

One family in particular who profoundly impacted the country music genre, was The Carter Family. In 1928 they recorded a song, “Keep on the Sunny Side.”

There’s a dark and a troubled side of life; There’s a bright and a sunny side, too; Tho’ we meet with the darkness and strife, The sunny side we also may view. [chorus]

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side, Keep on the sunny side of life; It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way, If we keep on the sunny side of life.

They lyrics were written by Ada Blenkhorn, inspired by her nephew. Though disabled, he desired to ride his wheelchair down “the sunny side” of the street and avoid the shadows of buildings along the way.

I remember studying this song in class, but also attached to these lyrics is a much deeper memory for me. As a little girl, I spent many summer afternoons hanging clean, damp laundry on the clothesline by my grandmother’s side, basking in the sun while she sang these words. After her stroke, when

she could no longer sing, we would hang laundry together and hum this and hymn tunes over and over again.

My grandmother taught me in life and in faith, that there are days you get to enjoy the sunshine and other days where you have to make the sun shine all on your own; but the good news is, there is always sunshine. You can never be without it, if you carry it within you. Therein lies the source of my hope in Christ as the light of the world, and the inspiration for future articles.

As one of the newest contributors to the magazine, I look forward to celebrating with you all the bright moments of life, as well as joining alongside you in those dark and gray moments, too. I encourage you all to e-mail and share some of your stories, as well.

I pray you can find bit of sunshine today, bask in it joyfully, humbly and gratefully. I pray it will encourage you and inspire you to share a little sunshine with others.

Genesis Kardia A Special Ministry for Special People

unrise United Methodist Church in Lewisville, NC, is a church that has always embraced the community they serve and tried to reach out to all people in whatever capacity was needed. So, when church member Jayne Koeslin felt that God put it on her heart to help make church services accessible to those with special needs, she knew that Sunrise UMC was the place to bring them to worship. “As followers of Christ, it is important for us to meet the needs of all. Those with special needs are often times ostracized by the culture where a person’s value and worth is determined by their ability to produce, what goods they can offer, or by what assets they contribute in the production/consumerdriven society, but at Sunrise, we believe all persons are of sacred worth and are precious in God’s sight,” said Jayne. The belief in the importance that all people have in a community and in a church is held

Filling a Need One Sunday, Katie Koeslin, a special-education teacher and daughter of Jayne, brought a young man with autism to church, since he wasn’t able to attend on a regular basis. They arrived early, hoping to acclimate him to his surroundings, but once the people began arriving, he became unsettled and was unable to stay. “This young man is not the only person who experiences this, or the only family that is not able to attend Sunday services, due to having a child with a disability that doesn’t have the ability to stay quiet or sit for a long

period of time. Offering a church service that would allow families to attend and not feel out of place if their child made a noise or had to get up was what I wanted to do,” Jayne recalled. So Jayne approached Sunrise’s current pastor at the time, Tim Roberts, about her idea and meetings with several families took place to plan on what the service would be like, knowing that it would evolve as time went on with God’s guidance. “We wanted a special name for our program so it could be easily recognized. After much prayer, we came up with Genesis Kardia; Genesis meaning ‘first’ and Kardia meaning ‘heart’—beginning a new journey to get to know our God,” stated Jayne.

The first year of Genesis Kardia looked more like a traditional church service, but with the young special-needs people of the church in the roles of leadership. “These young people have so many wonderful talents and skills that need to be recognized and used, and since this is their service, I want them involved. They greet, sing, play drums, read, do skits, serve communion and lead prayer. The service has changed a bit as we enter our third year. Last year, we read The Story by Max Lucado and Randy Frazee, making our way through three of the thirty chapters, breaking down the message and making it meaningful. We also do crafts and skits that connect with the message and sometimes make cards for the folks receiving Meals on Wheels,” Jayne commented.

Jayne is the first to recognize that this effort at Sunrise UMC involves many, including Katie Koeslin, a special- education teacher and leader of a group called Heart Sisters from Community Bible Church; Justi Cernak, special-education teacher for the deaf and hard-of-hearing; Linda Rephann, a step-parent of a young man with Down Syndrome; Amanda Worley, an advocate for people with disabilities; and Sunrise UMC’s new pastor, Rev. Jennifer Hampton.

Fulfilling a Calling It was early in her life that Jayne Koeslin began her love for specialneeds people. “I was four years old and my grandparents were a part of an Easter Seals camp in Iowa, called Camp Sunnyside, which first exposed me to people with special needs. It has always been my joy and love. In middle and high school, I volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Irving School Summer Program and a school for the blind. Later, I worked with United Cerebral Palsy, providing respite care for families in Wisconsin and have continued to be involved with special-needs people, either as a teacher or through respite care. I am currently attending Hood Seminary to become an Ordained Deacon, in order to continue my work with my special-needs population through a church setting after retiring from teaching. I am also a roller skating coach and on the Sports Development Team with Special Olympics,” said Jayne.

At Genesis Kardia’s core is the mission statement, “Coming together as one to grow spiritually in order to share Jesus’ love with others.” Jayne Koeslin and the leaders of Genesis Kardia will continue to serve the special-needs community at Sunrise UMC with the love, dedication and understanding that are at the group’s foundation.

mergency kits might inspire fear at the first mention of their name, but they aren’t necessarily tied to instances of disaster. Thanks to handy sites like Pinterest and Etsy, there’s inspiration for ways to create kits for both real emergencies or for those little emergencies that life throws at us daily. This column will explore ideas of items that could be essential for various types of emergency kits, so that you can be inspired and start your own. This month we’ll begin with an emergency kit for your fourlegged friends.

A sealed and waterproof container is recommended when packaging your pet emergency kit. You’ll want something that’s easy to grab and carry and won’t add too much weight to your kit. Some good options would be a Tupperware container with a handle or a waterproof backpack or bag.

First and foremost, it is essential that you include a first-aid book for pets in your kit, unless you have a veterinary degree. Our furry friends can’t take the same medications or the same doses of medications that we can, and small amounts of some things harmless for a human can prove lethal in small animals, so it’s important to know what’s safe for them before jumping into action.

In instances of emergency, it is important that you can contain your pet while keeping yourself and your pet safe. Depending on the size of your pet, you’ll want to pack a blanket or pillowcase that you can completely wrap their body in while keeping you safe from fearsome bites or scratching. Small animals can easily be placed in a pillow case with their heads sticking out to immobilize their legs and body, while larger pets will need to be wrapped in a blanket or towel and held.

Hydrogen Peroxide can be used to induce vomiting in dogs when they’ve ingested something potentially toxic. It is extremely important to remember that you should never administer any kind of emergency care to your pet without a vet’s guidance. On your next vet visit, let them know you are preparing an emergency kit and ask what dosage your pet might need in case you needed to administer it and were unable to provide professional veterinary care. Each pet is different and will have different needs.

Cornstarch is a handy tool if you regularly clip your pet’s nails at home. For those instances when you cut the nail too close to the quick you can dab at the affected area with a bit of cornstarch and it will help stop the bleeding.

Another handy item to include in your kit is children’s Benadryl or 25mg. Benadryl tablets (not capsules), depending on the size of your pet. The general rule of thumb is that your pet can have five milligrams per five pounds of body weight. So a 25-pound pet could have one 25-milligram tablet. Again, it is very important to discuss dosages with your veterinary professional before administering, and also ensure that your pet has no medical conditions or allergies that could be worsened by the medication.

An easy thing to overlook in an emergency would be a collapsible bowl and water bladder. Selecting collapsible items will save space in your kit and allow you to include other important items. Your pet will also need sustenance just like the rest of your family in the event of an emergency, so make sure to include a bag of healthy food.

lk We are frequently asked about fluoride and its role in healthy, young teeth. Fluoride is a mineral that offers protection from bacteria, sugars and acids that can be harmful to tooth enamel.

Children can get fluoride in drinking water and in toothpaste, but it is also found in many foods and beverages. Making sure your child eats a balanced diet with plenty of calcium and vitamin D is a great way to keep teeth healthy. Dentists may also recommend a topical fluoride treatment during dental visits at various stages of your child’s development for added protection.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control are all in agreement that water fluoridation is a safe and effective way to reduce and even prevent tooth decay. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a “smear” of toothpaste on children under the age of two twice each day. Children aged 2-5 can use a “pea-size” amount - and ALWAYS monitor your very young children when they brush...both for the effectiveness of the brushing and to monitor the amount of toothpaste used. Toothpaste is not meant to be ingested, and it can cause illness or be toxic if ingested in high amounts.

“Darla” thanked me for advice I had given at a previous conference she had attended. She said she had tried it on her husband, and it had worked! I panicked, thinking, “What did I say? Is he all right? Am I an accomplice?!” It seems she was at her wits end. For 17 years he was late for dinner. He didn’t call or apologize, and she didn’t even like to cook! Every night she and the kids waited for him to join them, then they’d fight through every cold meal. It was miserable.

“You said if what we‘re doing day after day isn’t working, we could choose to react differently, so I did.” Still holding my breath, I planned to search for his obituary as soon as I left. “One night, I decided I wouldn’t get mad anymore. I didn’t tell anyone about my plan. I kept dinner warm and didn’t call the kids until I heard him in the drive.” When she served dinner that night it was the first hot meal they’d shared in 17 years! Exhaling (only a little), I choked out, “So, how did that go?”

“It was great! I smiled the whole time.” Had to ask, “Why do you call this story ‘Goodbye, Earle?’” She laughed. “The kids were a little cautious, but HE was terrified. Took him a good 10 minutes before he ate. See, ‘cause I wasn’t mad, he was just sure I’d poisoned his food!” “I hadn’t, of course [big sigh of relief], but we’ve been happier ever since.”

T LOCAL MOMS Help Babies in Need

here is one universal truth that all moms know: we do everything we can to keep our babies healthy. Imagine having to choose between putting food on the table and buying diapers for your baby. That would be a tough choice. For some moms, this choice is a reality, and is one they have to make all-too frequently.

The average baby goes through 6−10 diapers a day, which adds up to an average cost of up to $100 per month. Since WIC vouchers or food stamps do not cover diapers, this high-ticket item can become a financial burden for some families. Some moms have to make the difficult decision of keeping their babies in diapers longer, or to use fewer diapers each day, or even have to resort to reusing old diapers, to using old cloths, or even using rags. This greatly increases the risk of sickness and infection for the baby, the prevention of which that family will most likely not be able to afford on many levels.

With over half of the children under the age of 6 in Forsyth County living in low-income households, local moms, Valerie Glass and Carrie Scott, saw the dire need for a Triad-based diaper bank to help keep babies healthy. In the fall of 2010, these gracious moms started the Piedmont Diaper Bank.

They worked with local agencies to provide diapers for families in need.

The Piedmont Diaper Bank quickly gained support through diaper drives and donations. Within two years they had collected over 100,000 diapers!

And they’ve already crossed the 500,000 mark in 2015!

This year, they merged with the Diaper Bank of NC as part of a statewide effort and became the Diaper Bank of NC–Greater Triad. Along with the Triangle chapter and the Lower Cape Fear chapter, the Diaper Bank of NC now has three branches to serve NC. “This merger is a wonderful opportunity for our community,” said Carrie Scott. “As part of this organization, we boost the capacity to serve local families.”

“Becoming Diaper Bank of North Carolina−Greater Triad offers the best of both worlds,” added Valerie Glass. “We will be part of a strong statewide movement to address diaper needs, while continuing our day-to-day work with Triad families.”

All of the hard work these busy moms have tirelessly put in was rightfully recognized this past March. Valerie and Carrie were honored with the Outstanding Service Award from the Outreach Alliance for Babies, Inc. Valerie and Carrie recently achieved another goal they had set for the Diaper Bank. Through their efforts, Governor Pat McCrory designated September 28th–October 4th, 2015, as Diaper Need Awareness Week in NC. This is an incredible opportunity for the entire state to hear about the ongoing diaper needs of low-income families.

The need for diapers will never go away. Babies will continue to be born, and those babies will need their parents to help keep them healthy. And sometimes, those parents will need a little help from their neighbors to fulfill that need. That is where you come in. You can even use it as an opportunity to teach your own children about helping others. Encourage your kids to hold a diaper drive with their friends at their school or church. Susan G. Komen® was started by a single family. In 1980, Nancy Brinker promised her sister, Susan Komen, that she would spend her life working to eradicate the disease that ultimately claimed Suzy’s life.

Today, Susan G. Komen is not just an organization, but a family that provides help, love, support, and makes an IMPACT at the local level.

The Komen Northwest NC family celebrates all the challenges that survivors overcome, and cry together for those that lost their battle.

This is a family that dresses up in crazy outfits to promote the Race for the Cure or draw attention to the importance of early detection. This is a family that cries together when one member is hurting. Most of all, the Komen Northwest NC family is one that is there for each other. The family covers an 11-county area, with its headquarters on Burke Street in Downtown Winston-Salem. Family members are always gathering at headquarters for meetings, support, assisting with questions on breast health resources, or for directing women to the many grantees the family funds for free mammograms, sharing ideas for fundraisers, or just providing a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on.

The extensive Komen Northwest NC family works together year-round to serve the village that is the local community. In 2014 alone, $505,000 was granted to local organizations to provide no-cost mammograms, diagnostics and other non-treatment support services for individuals in need. These grants, made possible by the generous supporters and partners of the Komen family, served over 28,000 people right here in Northwest NC last year. Thirty-two breast cancers were detected that may have not otherwise been found. The Season When it came to defining the highlight moment during the 2014 season, Coach Hicks deliberated, “Wow that is a tough one! There were so many great moments with those guys.

Winning the Forsyth Cup and CPC 4-A Conference championship for the first time (in school history) was huge. Beating Hough in the semifinal game, who had knocked us out the previous year in overtime, was another highlight. The turning point of the season, however, was when we lost to North Davidson. We were on a ten-game winning streak and the boys were on ‘cruise control,’ so that loss was a wake-up call for them. We went on to win ten games straight and the State Championship.”

The Championship They clearly left the best moment of the season for last as they shut FF09-15out Raleigh Broughton (two-time state champions), 1-0 in the NCHSAA state 4-A men’s soccer championship, held at Dail Soccer Field on the campus of North Carolina State University, in Raleigh no less. MVP of the game and senior captain Ethan Wells scored the lone goal in the 59th minute on a perfectly timed cross pass from his younger brother, freshman Noah Wells. What makes this even more special is that in the previous two seasons Ethan participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Program, but then decided to return to play his senior year with his younger brother. It was a decision that would result in one of the most memorable moments in Reagan sports history.

Hicks was also quick to point out the support for his team throughout the season. “Our Reagan students were awesome throughout the playoff run. It was a great day [winning the championship] for our program and the school; and I am glad that so many people got to be a part of it.”

What They Take away from the Success When asked how he thought this success will impact the team in their preparation and response for the upcoming season, Hicks responded, “Success in what you are trying to accomplish breeds belief. Belief is the most powerful thing to build in a team. This year’s team believes, and they have tasted what it is like to be the last team standing. They are hungry and have been working hard to prepare. They know that every opponent will give us their best game, and we welcome that challenge.”

For the players’ perspective, Noah Watkins, who played outside back on the championship team, sums it up best. “This past season of soccer was incredible. We had high expectations for ourselves, but never imagined we would experience the success we did. I’ve never been a part of something like it. We became more than just a team. We were a family. We are a family. We always will be. The memories we made on and off the field as a team during the amazing road to the championship are unforgettable. They will hold us together all our lives. I'm blessed to have been a part of that team.”

A Meeting of Minds Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors

s the calendar turns to September each year, more than 40 authors and thousands of readers converge at Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors in Winston-Salem.

Bookmarks 2015 begins on Thursday, September 10th, with a Keynote Opening event featuring global #1 bestselling author of books for all ages, David Baldacci. His newest book, The Keeper, will be released just in time for the Festival.

This ticketed event will be held at RJ Reynolds Auditorium and will be followed by a book signing.

Writing and reading events continue the next day with author visits to schools throughout the Triad area and ticketed Eat and Greets, featuring bestselling authors and chefs.

All Festival events are free on Saturday, September 12th, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts and surrounding area on Spruce Street. Authors and illustrators of international, national and regional renown will offer their unique perspectives across the spectrum of topics and audiences. The shared literary experiences engage community members of all ages through readings, storytelling, panel discussions, book signings and more.

Compassion

arenting is hard. Kids don’t come with how-to manuals. And when it comes to parenting our kids, one size does not fit all. All clichés. And all-too true. “Parenting Perspectives” explores various parenting topics from the perspective of two parents who are at (By Stacy Leighton) I LOVE this column! Parenting Perspectives is like virtual coffee with dear friends and everyone’s invited. In 300 words or less, we get to share our values as demonstrated by our children, the message we send out into the world. In that, I can think of no greater joy.

Compassion is the cornerstone of our family’s values. Different but akin to empathy, altruism and generativity, compassion “literally means ‘to suffer together.’ The feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.” (greatergood.berkeley.edu) It takes a lot of guts to be that vulnerable. I mean, who wants to “suffer”? It’s a gamble for sure, but one with a huge payout.

I witnessed this while chaperoning my son Tucker’s fifth-grade Washington, DC, field trip. As we marched our ducklings past the Capital, I noticed a homeless man with a sign asking for money.

Except for us, I’d wager none of the small-town rural students had actually seen a homeless person. Some stared, some whispered, none stopped, except my son. A few people behind him, I watched him dig into his pocket for the meager spending money I had given him at the beginning of the week. He’d been saving it for something special. Tucker smiled and handed all of it to the man, who smiled in return. I watched and waited.

His peers chided him for being foolish. “You can’t give him money!” “Give it to ME!” and, “Man, you are dumb. He’ll probably buy booze with it.” I was just about to get involved when I heard him say “I don’t care what he uses it for. He needs it more than I do. I did it because it makes me feel good.” Out of the mouths of babes, message sent.

different stages in their parenting career. This month, Lisa and Stacy both explore the topic of compassion. Lisa is a mom to a 5-year-old daughter and felt privileged to have two years with her son. Stacy is a mom to a 24-year old daughter and 19-year old son.

(By Lisa Doss) Well before our children learn to walk, lessons of compassions are displayed through the most genuine acts of love. When tears or a panicked facial expression are seen by parents, it is instinctual for them to hold their child with great enveloping arms of protection.

It’s so easy to soothe with gentle words, sounds or song, and offer kisses of healing. Through these actions of comfort, our daughters and sons know they can run to us with urgency, and we will be there to love and understand. In fact, there is a greater message that children are learning through observation and practice.

On my daughter’s fifth birthday, the family gave her “friends and sisters of Barbie” for her new doll house. (It’s a shame I can’t locate brothers of Barbie or grandparents, too.) I loved witnessing the dialogue between the dolls that, in my daughter's imagination, represented the daddy, mommy and sisters. I heard what was important to her, as well as words such as “please,” “thank you” and “I love you.” I couldn’t help but smile.

Her little brother and two dogs have taught her wonderful life lessons about sharing, showing kindness and gentle actions, and saying words of apology when it’s necessary. As a parent, I feel it’s so nice to witness these random exchanges in public, especially among strangers. Since losing her little brother in March, my daughter gravitates towards younger children; however, in July, she attended a half-day camp through Salem Gymnastics with a group of kids, mostly boys, who were much older. They didn’t dismiss her youth, but graciously included her in the conversations. I silently thanked them for showing compassion towards a child who is secretly mourning her brother.

In the places where we least expect it, or in times of real need, we hope we are instilling great examples that our children can value and use today, and in the days and years to come.

Parents: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible theme), is to raise happy, healthy members of your community, imbued with the tools needed for self-regulation. This message (and not your child) will self-destruct in 5 seconds.”

Set the Groundwork Respect, Routines, Rituals and Rules: When we model and require respect, our children will emulate that behavior and appreciate its value. We establish routines and rituals to provide a sense of security, the cornerstone of self-esteem. Our rules are set, as clear and concise as they are few in number. After all, it’s hard to win the game if the rules keep changing.

Logic and Reason We’re not born with it, so it has to be learned. Avoid lectures. Instead, ask your child thoughtprovoking questions, then wait for him or her to process their answer. This dialogue helps to guide them towards a better choice.

Success is achieved when your child has his/her own “Ah ha!” moment, because when they own it they rarely forget it.

Provide an Alternate of Choice 3-year-olds and pre-teens (same thing, only taller) are often called the Great Debaters. It’s more about “the win” than, well, anything else, a never-ending chorus of “Yes, you will,” and “No, I won’t.” By giving an alternate choice you allow them to control their decisions while you control the outcome. Example: “Do you want to wear the blue shoes or the brown ones?” You got them to wear shoes, so it’s a winwin.

Non-verbal Cues Discussions are not always an option.

Need to quell an inappropriate behavior on the spot?

Practice non-verbal signals with your child. Maybe it’s a look that freezes any child at 50 paces, a silly word or sound. A popular Southern-ism is “Eh-heh.” Belles, we know that means “Straighten Up!” My personal favorite, as it eliminates the risk of publically humiliating both you and your child, which, incidentally, never ends well.

Distraction/Re-direction It’s simple neuroscience really (oxymoron?!). Emotional responses happen in the limbic system, judgment and logic in the frontal lobe. The idea is to move from one to the other before attempting resolution. A change of scenery or subject is all it takes. “What do you think we should make Daddy for dinner? I’m thinking frog legs and chicken feet.” It’s okay to be nonsensical, you may be surprised by how painlessly simple this trick is. Note: This works for us too, if you begin to feel emotionally overwhelmed, distract yourself, go for a walk, or call an old friend. Table any decisions or confrontations until you are once again calm and rational.

Proximity Worried your child might misbehave if you have company, or if you are distracted? Much like non-verbal cues, your physical “nearness” will remind them to check themselves. Not a threatening menace, but a loving reminder. Try pairing a genuine grin with a gentle rub on the back. That’s as extreme as it gets.

When Punitive Action is Required Forget “Time Out,” it’s not a place where we reflect on our poor decisions; more often, it’s where we plan retribution for our incarceration. Bad idea.

Better to “do” than to “stew.” You’ve been clear about misbehavior consequences; now you have to follow through…every time. Punishments should be helpful to you, not hurtful, so I am a big fan of manual labor. Try yardwork, housework, or pet care. Seriously, who wouldn’t like a little extra help? Tailor the “chores” to suit your child’s age and development.

BONUS: You’ll have something you can praise them for (something you both really need right now), and they’ll have new life skills they can be proud of.

Staying Connected with Gra ndpa rents

H

ow close do your children live to their grandparents? Can your daughter open the front door and walk a few blocks to Grammy’s house when she wants to show her a picture she just drew? Or would your son have to catch a few planes just to let Grandpa know, face-toface, that he had made the school basketball team?Over the years, the concept of families living in close proximity to each other over a lifetime has started to change. It’s not always a given that grown children will move back to their hometowns once they get married and/or have children of their own. But what effect does this have on families? How do we make sure that our children are connected and known by their grandparents that they may see only a few times a year?

And how do we maintain that age-old concept that it “takes a village to raise a child,” when that village can be spread over several hundreds of miles?

Here are some of the few ways we try and keep our children connected with their grandparents:

Skype or Facetime In my opinion, one of the greatest things to come out of the current influx of social media is Skype and/or Facetime. Both allow my children to have face-to-face contact with their grandparents any time they want.

It’s great for younger children who sometimes don’t have the patience to sit and listen to grandma on the phone, and it gives them the ability to actually show their grandparents what they’ve been up to lately. My kids’ grandparents always get a tour of our house and an introduction to any new toys or artwork when we talk to them via Facetime.

Visit with them as much as possible Nothing can trump actual one-on-one time with a grandparent when it comes to making memories. Grandparents are willing to read piles of books, play with play dough, attend kids’ sports games and many other things just to be close to their grandchild. We try and give our children ample opportunities to make memories with their grandparents. This may be as simple as a day visit that includes a trip to the ice cream store or something as elaborate as a multi-generational family vacation.

Whatever the event, we feel that actual, in-person contact with grandparents is the best way to make and preserve memories.

Grandparent camp Although going out of town without children (especially if the children are young) can be a daunting idea, it can be made much easier if a grandparent is willing to watch your children. Although they know it will be exhausting, many grandparents will jump at the chance to spend a few uninterrupted days with their grandchildren. It also means that you get to have a few uninterrupted days as well, something every parent needs! Sure, the schedule may not be kept, the house will get messy, and your kids will be spoiled, but memories will be made, and your parents and your children will grow even closer in the process.

Become pen pals My grandparents (my children’s great-grandparents) live a long distance away and are in their late 80s. Although they are in good health, it is hard for them to take long trips to see us. As a way to keep 94 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

in touch, they have started writing letters and sending cards to my children. My kids love receiving letters from them and then dictating ones to me for us to send back. It provides a connection between them that is often hard to forge with great-grandparents. I’m planning on saving the letters so that they’ll have a reminder later in life of the sweet things their great-grandparents said to them.

Healthy Zucchini Recipes

By Kristi Marion Zucchini Bread This longtime favorite gets an extra boost of nutrition from applesauce, whole wheat flour, and optional raisins and nuts.

3 cups shredded zucchini (2-3 medium zucchini) 1⅔ cups sugar ⅔ cup unsweetened applesauce 2 tsp vanilla 4 eggs 1½ cups all-purpose flour 1½ cups whole wheat flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1.2 tsp ground cloves ½ tsp baking powder ½ cup nuts and/or raisins (optional) Directions: 1. Move rack to lower position so that the tops of the loaf pans will be in the center of the oven. Heat oven to 350º F. Grease bottoms only of 2 (8 x 4-inch) loaf pans, or 1 9-inch loaf pan, or one 24 regular-size muffin pan with cooking spray.

2. Shred zucchini and press out water between paper towels.

3. In a large bowl, stir zucchini, sugar, applesauce, vanilla and eggs until well-mixed.

4. Stir in remaining ingredients except nuts and raisins. After well-mixed, add optional nuts and raisins and stir.

5. Pour into two 8-inch loaf pans or one 9-inch loaf pan.

6. Bake 8-inch loaves for 50-60 minutes. Bake 9-inch loaf 70-80 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. If baking muffins, fill ¾ full and bake 20-25 minutes, or until tops spring back when touched lightly. Cool on cooling rack for 10 minutes.

7. Loosen sides of loaves from pans with a knife and place on cooling rack. Cool completely for 2 hours before slicing. Wrap tightly and store at room temperature up to 4 days, or refrigerate for up to 10 days, or freeze.

ids may find zucchini hard to spell, but easy to eat! Zucchini is a healthy vegetable now in season that is easy to “hide” in recipes for those picky eaters, and makes a healthy addition to salads, snack foods, sweets and more.

Pick some up from your local farmers’ market or perhaps from your own home garden and cook up these delicious dishes.

Zucchini Pizza Boats These are a great option for your gluten-free family and friends.

6 small zucchini (2½ lbs.)

1 Tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic, finely minced salt and pepper 1 cup marinara sauce 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese (6 oz.) ⅓ cup finely shredded parmesan cheese (1.4 oz.) ½ cup mini-pepperoni slices 2 Tbsp fresh chopped oregano, basil, or Italian seasoningup the carb and fat content of a regular pizza recipe.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400º F. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or silpat liner.

2. Slice each zucchini into halves lengthwise. (If using a medium to large zucchini, scoop out the seeds.) Line them up on the baking sheet and pat the inside dry with paper towels.

3. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil and garlic and brush it lightly onto the zucchini.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

4. Spoon 1 Tbsp marinara onto each zucchini, leaving a small rim of the zucchini bare.

5. Sprinkle mozzarella evenly onto the zucchini, then the parmesan. Top with pepperoni.

6. Bake 10-12 minutes. If you wish to have a softer zucchini, bake them a few minutes longer. Remove and sprinkle with oregano/basil/Italian seasoning. Serve warm.

Zucchini Beany Quesadillas (Kids don’t just love eating it, they love saying it!)

2 tsp olive oil 1 medium zucchini, unpeel and diced small ½ small brown onion (optional), diced ½ tsp chili powder ¾ tsp ground cumin 1 15-oz. can of white beans (navy, cannellini, great northern) 1½ c. shredded mozzarella 6 8-inch tortillas (flour or corn) Directions: 1. On medium-high heat, heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the zucchini, onion, chili powder and cumin, and gently stir frequently until softened, about 12 minutes.

2. Stir in the beans and heat through.

3. Sprinkle 2 Tbsp of cheese onto half of each tortilla. Top with bean mixture and top again with cheese. Close each tortilla in half.

4. Heat the tortilla until golden brown and the cheese inside is melted.

5. Cut in halves and serve with optional guacamole, sour cream, or salsa.

aria and Neil Shaw find that after almost 28 years of marriage, their creativity is one thing that binds them together. Neil and Maria Shaw lived in Southern California for 15 years before moving to Winston-Salem for Neil’s job. He now works for BRIJ. Maria cares for their children: Justin, age 23, Lauren, 20, and Matthew, 15. Both Neil and Maria are creative people, with a love of music, and Neil loves to sketch, while Maria loves to paint.

In their free time, Neil and Maria combine these arts, working together to create beautiful, vivid paintings of various artists, primarily in acrylic. “We work as a team—Neil is the sketcher, and I’m the painter,” explained Maria.

“Our family loves music, so we paint our favorite singers. I grew up listening to Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Neil and our son Matthew love the Beatles, Queen, and Michael Jackson.”

Maria’s personal favorite is their painting of Bob Dylan.

Neil sketches the musicians in his free time. “I can't draw, and he has no patience with painting,” explained Maria. “On the other hand, I love to paint.”

Their first collaborative work was a large painting of The Beatles Abbey Road in 2009, though Maria notes that their work has improved drastically over their years of working together. Last year was a prolific year for them, as they created 24 paintings featuring musicians and family members.

The Shaws just completed a painting of Mick Jagger, and are now working on a colorful portrait of Michael Jackson.

The couple has found that working together artistically is not only a fun hobby to enjoy, but it also strengthens their marriage, by their contemplating ideas together and appreciating each other’s gifts. “We do this for fun, and it’s a great way for my husband and

me to work as a team, working through concepts, each great at what we do and acknowledging the other’s talent,” said Maria.

Though they create together for the fun of it, the Shaws have sold several works to friends. Three of their paintings are currently for sale at the Frame It! Shop at Sherwood Plaza on Robinhood Road in Winston-Salem.

Maria’s creativity is not limited to the canvas. She also aspires to be a book author, and has upwards of 30 manuscript drafts. She was concerned about her son’s distaste for reading when he was in fourth grade, and she set out to write books he and others his age would be interested in, as well as adult fiction. She has just completed a trilogy that is now being edited.

On moving from Northern California, Maria says, “The people here are simply awesome. We love the fact that they put Jesus foremost in their lives and what you see is what you get, for the most part…. We love the seasons here, too, but I do hate the bugs….” We can all relate!

The Amulet of Samarkand, Book 1: Bartimaeus Trilogy

This novel is very different from the other magical books you have read in the past. It begins with a young boy named Nathaniel, who becomes a magician’s apprentice. Sadly, Mr. Underwood, who is stern and sometimes cruel, cannot see the intelligence and ability in young Nathaniel; so, Nathaniel decides secretly to summon a powerful 5,000 year old djinni (genie). Of all the characters in the story, readers will find great humor and sarcasm, and interesting information about history, from the djinni, Bartimaeus. Trouble occurs when Bartimaeus is commanded to steal the Amulet of Samarkand from a powerful ministry magician. This story is not just a page- turner for children; adults, too, will enjoy the engaging story with many interesting and complex characters. When the trilogy is complete, readers can still enjoy one last story, The Ring of Solomon, which focuses on the earlier adventures of the witty Bartimaeus.

Unwind

By Neal Shusterman Genre: Young Adult Age Range: 12−17 years old Reviewed by Rebecca Olsen No one between the ages of 13 and 18 is safe. When pro-life and pro-choice factions start a world war over the sanctity of life, the ending result is a compromise that allows parents to have their teenage children “unwound.” When Connor gets into trouble one too many times at school, his parents sign the order to have his body divided and sold to the highest bidder. While not technically death, this reallocation of organs allows society an excuse for what it practices by fulfilling a need once met by organ donation. Connor manages to escape, only to find himself joined by other “unwounds” in a battle to survive intact until their 18th birthdays. Shusterman manages to tackle such a very serious subject in an engrossing way. This is a very thought-provoking look at what happens when society loses sight of the value of human life.

e all have our favorite place to dine in Winston-Salem. Though there are many great options in and around our area, many of us have that one place we go back to again and again. For an increasing number of those who call the Triad home, that place is Stratford Station Grill on Stratford Road. This loyalty and consistent support from the community has led owner George Kortesis to this year’s 17th anniversary. “We opened in August of 1998,” said George. “We are family-owned, and we make everything fresh.”

In the late 90s, “fresh” wasn’t really a word that was synonymous with the best food available, but it was an important element to a successful business for Stratford Station Grill. Serving fresh food and sourcing local products was the plan from the start. “A local bakery makes our cakes, but the cheesecake we serve is our own family recipe,” said George. “We serve everything from breakfast to seafood, pastas to sandwiches. We offer beer and wine, children’s and seniors’ menus, as well as breakfast all day.”

In addition to breakfast, Stratford Station Grill offers extensive lunch and dinner menus.

Lunch items include homemade onion rings and fried zucchini strips, Angus burgers, sandwiches, subs, wraps and entrees like shrimp Alfredo and chicken parmesan. Dinner favorites include Angus choice rib eyes, pork chops, Alaskan white fish, vegetable plates and daily dinner specials. “Our salads are very popular with the regulars, and our chips are homemade,” said George. “We offer hand-cut steaks and more than 12 vegetables, served daily. We also have a sweet potato chip with a cinnamon sauce.”

Stratford Station Grill’s “breakfast served all day” is a huge part of its appeal to repeat customers. “We serve breakfast all day because customers ask for it,” said George. “Our biggest seller is the Train Wreck Scrambler which includes eggs, peppers, onions, ham, sausage and hash browns, baked with cheddar cheese. We have different styles of French toast, two kinds of hash browns, chunky or shredded—both
