5 TIPS FOR DISCOVERING THE CAREER THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

A

re you at a juncture in your career where you are thinking about making a change? Or maybe you are just starting your career or getting back into the workforce and trying to figure out which direction to go. Discovering the career that’s right for you can be difficult.

The average person spends 1/3 of their life at work – over 90,000 hours in a lifetime! That’s a lot of time, so we want to choose something that fits in with our gifts, talents and preferences that we will enjoy.

There are so many options that it can be challenging to land on a particular career choice. Below are five tips that may help provide some direction in discovering your next career.

1. Identify your interests Interests are activities that you enjoy doing, lose all track of time as you are involved in doing them, and you look forward to doing them again.

Ask yourself these questions:

• What activities attract and hold my attention?

• What types of work have I enjoyed doing in the past?

• What industries or functions appeal to me? What industries or functions don’t appeal to me?

• Do I enjoy working more as part of a team or more independently?

• What types of work do I dislike that I should avoid?

2. Get clear on your strengths Ask yourself, “What am I really good at?” and then ask others for their feedback. Reflect on your work and academic achievements as data to make this assessment. Examples of strengths might include things like writing, data analysis, organization, and innovation. Then, recognize those things that you aren’t good at and consider this information as well.

There are a few assessments that can assist in getting clear on your strengths including the Working Genius and CliftonStrengths. The Working Genius identifies six types of work activities and helps individuals identify types of work that bring them fulfillment and those that bring frustration. CliftonStrengths provides information on your top five areas of strength out of 34 strength themes.

3. Clarify your core values As you are exploring career options, it’s a good idea to clarify your core values, the things that are most important to you in how you live and work. As you think about potential careers, using your core values as a lens can be advantageous in choosing a path and an organization to work for.

4. Identify your deal breakers As you choose a new career, there are likely some things that are nonnegotiables for you. Perhaps you have an interest in a particular career but you know that it won’t provide the opportunity for you to work from home – and that’s one of your deal breakers. Therefore, you can eliminate that option from consideration. Asking the following questions can help you think through your deal breakers: • What hours are you willing to work?

• What is the maximum amount of time you are willing to commute each day?

• Are you okay working nights/weekends?

• Are you willing to travel?

• Do you want to work from home?

5. Gather information on different careers Once you work through the items above and have narrowed your preferences, it’s a good idea to do additional exploration on the different career options that could potentially be a fit. O*Net, www.onetonline.org, provides a wealth of information on various careers. In addition, talking to people in those jobs of interest to gather more information is a great strategy. You might even explore opportunities to shadow them!

Working through these five tips will help you in discovering the career that’s right for you. If you would like additional assistance, engaging a Career Coach to guide you through the exploration and search process can be advantageous.

Bennett Funeral Service The Privilege of Honoring Veterans

amily means everything at Bennett Funeral Service – whether it’s the family who built the business or the families they serve daily.

Eligibility for military funeral honors will be verified by the veteran’s DD-214, or discharge papers – and those funeral honors are free of charge. At minimum, eligible veterans are entitled to the folding and presenting of the American flag to the next of kin, and the playing of “Taps” by a bugler or recording. These honors are performed by an honor guard detail that consists of at least two members of the Armed Forces.

The Bennett team also helps families communicate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to arrange for a Presidential Memorial Certificate, expressing the nation’s recognition of the veteran’s service.

Eddy Caldwell, U.S. Army Veteran, served from 1969-1971 with 2/327 Infantry during the Vietnam War. “We fought for freedom, and we stand for the American flag, the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.” He reminds veterans that, during the National Anthem, they should give the “Hand Salute” instead of placing their hand over their heart. “The Military Salute is a gesture that marks those who have served in our nation’s armed forces.”

Charlie Miller, U.S. Army Veteran, served from 1966-1968 during the Vietnam Era. “I’m from a family with a strong tradition of military service including my father, a WWII veteran, my oldest brother who served in Korea, and another brother and I both served during Vietnam and were in the Army. Drafted straight out of high school, I was stationed in Germany because my brother served in Vietnam. I’m currently an active member of the American Legion Post 544 and the Honor Guard, and provide Military Honors for men and women who have served our country. It’s a privilege to provide honors for those who have passed on.”

the Vietnam Era. “I was honored to serve in the United States Army. Everyone should take the opportunity to serve their country, as it allows you to learn respect for your country and fellow man. If I were younger, I would serve again.”

If you're someone who struggles with feeling tired and sluggish during the day, you might be interested in learning about coffee naps. This unique approach to combating mid-day drowsiness involves taking a quick nap immediately after drinking a cup of coffee. But does it really work? Let's explore the science behind coffee naps and how they might benefit you.

A coffee nap, also known as a caffeine nap, is a method of taking a quick nap (typically around 20 minutes) immediately after consuming a cup of coffee. The idea is that the caffeine in the coffee will take about 2030 minutes to fully enter your bloodstream and begin to have its stimulating effects. How it Works: PREEMERGENT HERBICIDE

P

reemergent herbicides are a type of herbicide that is applied to soil before weeds have a chance to germinate. These herbicides work by forming a barrier in the soil that prevents weed seeds from sprouting and growing.

The active ingredient in preemergent herbicides typically targets enzymes that are essential for plant growth. When a weed seed attempts to germinate and grow, it takes up the herbicide from the soil, which then interferes with the plant’s ability to produce necessary proteins and enzymes for growth. This causes the weed seed to die before it can emerge from the soil and establish itself.

Fescue lawns become challenging as the preemergent barrier needs to be worn off prior to aerating and overseeding the lawn. This leaves the lawn susceptible to weed invasion in the fall. In the fall, Poa Annua germinates in all grass types and begins to show up in late winter and early spring. Given this cycle, it has become one of the more difficult weeds to prevent. Even though preemergent herbicide can target this weed, the timing of the application is required in the fall, which eliminates the homeowner’s opportunity to perform an important aeration and overseeding.

Preemergent herbicides are particularly effective against annual weeds, which complete their life cycle within a single growing season and rely on seeds to reproduce. By preventing these weeds from germinating, preemergent herbicides can significantly reduce the number of weeds that appear in each area.

It is important to note that preemergent herbicides must be applied before weed seeds have a chance to germinate, which typically means they are applied in early spring before soil temperatures rise and trigger seed germination. Preemergent herbicides have residual effects that last for several weeks to several months in the soil. The goal of the residual is to create a barrier that extends through the germination season of a particular target weed. The most common use of preemergent herbicide is to prevent summer crab grass.

This weed germinates in April and begin to appear above ground May-September. Timing the application of a preemergent before germination which also resides in the soil through August is important to maintaining a crabgrass free lawn.

The fallacy of preemergent is that they prevent all weeds from germinating. Depending on the type of grass you have, professionals have 3-4 product options to choose from. Each product has a similar list of weeds they prevent, with a few caveats, but some weeds can overcome this protection and germinate despite a properly applied preemergent barrier.

Although they are not perfect, preemergent herbicide is an effective preventative solution to weed control. Used appropriately in concert with post emergent herbicides, lawns can be maintained weed free, while reducing the stress on the grass plant and the environment.

2. They focus on what’s within their control. There will always be factors outside our influence, but successful people focus their energy on what they can control. For moms, that means choosing how they respond to unexpected challenges, staying present and modeling resilience for their children.

3. They trust their preparation and take bold action. Success under pressure isn’t about luck – it’s about preparation. Moms know this instinctively. They plan ahead, anticipate needs and, when the moment arrives, they take action with confidence and courage.

To summarize one secret to thriving under pressure, it’s this – invest in self awareness.

Moms, leaders, executives and athletes who understand their strengths and limits can navigate stressful situations more effectively. This awareness helps them: •

919 Backyard BBQ CHIMICHURRI CHICKEN

1. Once the chimichurri is made, get your chicken thighs out, pat them dry and season with your favorite seasoning. The chimichurri is going to add a lot of flavor, so I usually just hit them with a little salt & pepper or SPG (salt, pepper and garlic).

or this month, I wanted to share a new recipe I’ve been doing for a while but have recently seen gain popularity on the internet – Chimichurri Chicken! I have written an article previously sharing the chimichurri recipe, but I’ll go over it again and we’ll put a new twist on it. Chimichurri is typically used for red meat, but I’ve found it tastes great with chicken, too!

Ingredients:

• 1/2 C finely chopped parsley (curly – not Italian) • 3 cloves garlic • 2 red chili peppers (de-seeded and split in half) • 1/2 C olive oil • 2 T red wine vinegar • 3/4 tsp. dried oregano • 1 tsp. kosher salt • 1/2 tsp. crushed black pepper • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper • 4-5 skinless/boneless chicken thighs Note: If you’re using a blender/food processor, you can leave the parsley off the stem whole, chop garlic cloves in half and chop red chili peppers in half. If you’re making this by hand, you’ll need to finely dice/chop all ingredients above.

2. Once the chicken is seasoned, spread the chimichurri sauce on both sides with a basting brush.

3. Place them back in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or so for the seasoning and marinade to lock in.

4. Now, you can either cook these in the oven, on a skillet or, my preferred method, over some charcoal!

5. Get the coals rolling hot, throw them on the grill and let them cook for about three or four minutes before flipping them over.

6. I like to flip them on both sides two to three times and, depending on thickness of the thighs and how hot your grill is running, they should only need about 10-15 minutes max to get fully browned up and reach that internal temperature of 165 degrees.

7. Once they are fully charred up and at the correct temperature, pull them off and enjoy!

WONDER OF THE SEAS

C

ruising on a cruise ship is a great way to travel. They treat you like royalty. But it is not without mishap. I remember our first cruise. We were working at that time, and we decided to take a cruise to Alaska. We found one departing from Seattle, Washington, that met our criteria. Our sons’ in-laws lived there, so we gave them a call and they invited us out a day before to stay with them.

We got up in the morning and they brought us to the port. We could not find the ship. There was nobody there. Finally, someone told us that the Coast Guard did not approve the ship for passenger service because they didn’t complete the repairs in the engine room after they had a fire. Our hosts did not want to hear this because they were leaving for Germany the next day. They offered us their house to stay in as we looked for another cruise. This was before cell phones, so the cruise company had called but there was no way you could reach us. The cruise company went bankrupt and paid $0.10 on the dollar. We were fortunate enough to have paid by credit card.

We got all the money back and scheduled the

cruise with another cruise line. We identified an option departing from Seattle, Washington, that met our requirements.

We have cruised often since then, but our most recent cruise was different. This was with the Royal Caribbean Cruise line on their ship, the WONDER OF THE SEAS. It is one of their largest cruise ships and we were curious what it was all about. The WONDER OF THE SEAS is 1,188’ long, 210’ wide and has a draft of 30’.

She can serve about 5,700 passengers with a crew of about 2,300. Most of the cabins have balconies, half facing the ocean and half facing the park. Yes, I said park. They have a beautiful park, including a Zip line in the middle of the ship. We were on the 14th deck, and there were two more above us, housing 2,867 cabins. She is BIG! But she will accommodate you beautifully.

Her crew is International and very friendly. We spoke with people from China, Indonesia, India, England, Italy and Puerto Rico. They normally work 7 months on and 2 months off.

The entertainment on cruise ships is normally very good. We only had one case where they had the entertainer put off the ship. He had a huge problem with his language. This was not the Royal Caribbean problem. We saw an ice show which was outstanding. In fact, we liked it so much, we saw it twice.

I was able to take a tour of the ship. It was very impressive. I never saw so much stainless steel as they had in the galley. And everything was spotless. I did not go into their freezers though; it was too cold for me. But the laundry was impressive. Just think of the cleaning every day for the sheets, towels, tablecloths and uniforms.

While the experience was glamorous it wasn’t without its mishaps. We were joined on the cruise by our close friends who traveled with us, to honor my wife on her eighty fifth birthday, and we did, but following dinner, Mr. D had a heart attack and was taken to the Infirmary. They stabilized him and planned the best way to proceed. A possibility was to helicopter him as soon as possible. But he started to improve, and they finally decided to airlift him and his wife from St. Thomas to Fort Lauderdale, Fl where he could receive the necessary hospital care he needed. We are happy to say that Mr. D has two stints in him and is doing fine. They said he was not eligible for additional surgery.

You can never tell what may happen when you travel but go for it. I think that’s why they have travel insurance.

Dear Dr. Keith, I’m a 23-year-old male in need of some guidance. I’m in my senior year of college and will be graduating soon. The first couple of years of college are a blur, and I’m not sure how I made it through personally and grade wise. It was party central, and I wasn’t making the best choices regarding alcohol and drugs.

I used them as an escape. They helped me to cope with my social anxiety and the pressure of getting good grades and pleasing my parents, unnecessary pressure I put on myself. My parents have always been supportive and allowed me to be myself, maybe too much freedom and sometimes enabling. I wasn’t learning from my mistakes because I knew they would bail me out with no consequences, and they did. They enabled me to continue down a slippery slope, thinking they were being good parents and helping me. In reality, and with good intentions, they were crippling me. That’s not the issue anymore because I’m making better choices and in a better place thanks to Allie, my girlfriend of a couple of years. Since we met, we have become inseparable. We don’t live together; however, we might as well be. She’s encouraged and helped me to clean up my act. Drugs are no longer an issue, and I’ll have an occasional cocktail. I’m making better choices in all areas of my life thanks to her.

She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Here’s the issue. Allie has secured a job in New York after we graduate and is going to move in with a couple of her friends who are already living and working there. I’m in the process of looking for jobs and have been offered a position in another city more than a thousand miles away. It’s a great offer in a career I covet, however, I’m terrified of regressing and falling back into old self-destructive habits without her. She thinks it will be good for us to separate, experience dating other people and start our new lives with no obligations to each other. I know deep inside she’s probably right and ultimately this will be a good thing; however, I’m struggling to accept it. Is this her way of breaking up with me and letting me down gently? I keep searching for opportunities in New York and haven’t accepted the current job offer yet. The company is pressing me for an answer, or they’ll move on. My time to make a decision is short, however, my knee jerk reaction is to say “no” and keep looking so I can be with Allie. Do I give up what could potentially be my dream job in a city that I like, or do I sacrifice that to be with the love of my life? I have yet to discuss this with Allie because I’m afraid of what her answer will be; I’m fearful of being rejected. I’m struggling to imagine my life without her. Please help.

Even people in negative or abusive relationships struggle with them ending; unfortunately, the fear of being alone overpowers reasonability the majority of the time. You give Allie a lot of credit for the positive changes in your life, however, you’re the one who has implemented the strategies necessary to facilitate them. Granted, she might have been the catalyst, but you’re the one who did it. You have proven to yourself you were and are capable of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Though it may be challenging at first, you have to prove to yourself that you can do it without her. You have to believe you are capable. It’s your responsibility to take care of yourself and become the best version of Peter that you can possibly be.

That’s the greatest gift you can give to your parents and those you love, especially to yourself. Doing so will keep you on the right path and help you create a good life for yourself. There are those who will say at 23 that you’re too young to really know what love is. I don’t believe it’s as much of an age thing as it is experience.

However, I do know that it’s vital to get to know and love yourself before you can truly know and give love. You have to learn to love yourself; it’s key to a happy and healthy relationship. You now have the opportunity to really get to know yourself, what you like and what you don’t like without the influence of someone else. She has that same opportunity. Even if you decided to try maintaining a long-distance relationship which is challenging anyway, it’s difficult to go from consistently seeing each other to what I call vacation dating. As I’ve said before,

it’s not the mistakes in life that are hard to live with, it’s the regrets. You mentioned you received a job offer you described as your dream job right out of the gate. Some people don’t find that in their lifetime, and giving that up might be a regret. Why pass up a sure thing for an illusion of what you think could possibly be in New York with Allie? She was the one who initiated the conversation about splitting up, and you never mentioned if you agreed to it; however, she may have her mind made up already.

Do you really want to know if that’s true or enjoy the time you have left and separate amicably? In any relationship, if it’s over with one, it’s over – no matter how much you don’t want it to be. Do you want to take a chance and pass on your dream job to chase someone to New York who may not want you there? Unless someone is married, it’s usually not wise to uproot their life and move to maintain a relationship. More fail than succeed. Why replace a somewhat known, the dream job, with the unknown and gamble your growth and opportunity for uncertainty? It’s probably not in your best interest. Take the time to really get to know and love yourself, embrace the unknown, continue making good choices, and eventually you’ll find true love. Chances are it won’t be in the Big Apple.

RICKY “CARL” GARCIA OF LEGACY MOTOR CLUB

he month of May is National Military Appreciation Month – a special, set aside time to recognize and honor the men and women who sacrificially serve our country, both past and present, along with their families. NASCAR participates in many ways throughout the month to show honor, ending the month with the Coca-Cola 600, with each Cup Series car featuring the name of a fallen soldier on the windshield as part of their “600 Miles of Remembrance” tribute. There are several veterans who now work within NASCAR, and this month, we want to highlight Ricky “Carl” Garcia, frontend mechanic for the no. 42, driven by John Hunter Nemechek.

Garcia served in the U.S. Army for a little less than four years from 1997-2000 out of Fort Bragg, NC as a specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division – an airborne infantry division specializing in parachute assault operations into hostile areas. Garcia had an interest in serving our country from a young age growing up hearing stories from several of his family members who had served during both the Korean and Vietnam War eras. When asked

what it means to him to be honored as a service member of the United States, Garcia shared, “I don’t think people realize what it takes for kids to go do that, especially nowadays with all that’s going on in the world and higher chances that most of them could end up giving that ultimate sacrifice.” He went on to say, “It does mean a lot to me. I see a lot of soldiers around the track, and they’re providing more for our country now than I am, but that I used to do as well.”

Garcia recalled one of his favorite memories while in the service occurring during a month-long jungle training in Panama.

During that training, he parachuted out of a Chinook helicopter and landed in the Panama Canal, having to ditch his parachute quickly and make it to dry ground, only to be surrounded by elephant grass six feet tall and dangers of all kinds.

After Garcia’s time serving in the military, he was living in North Carolina and had just gotten interested in NASCAR when he happened to run into a man in the grocery store who was wearing a hat of one of the teams and struck up conversation. Turns out he was a cook for one of the race teams and invited Garcia to come help. Garcia then met the owner of the team and subsequently got offered a job as a tire changer for that team. He has been working in the sport since 2009 and with Richard Petty Motorsports, which is now LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, since 2018. There are skills Garcia used during his time serving that he applies to his job now such as “the leadership, learning to think on your feet and think ahead to prepare for the next move.” He added, “It translates over immensely because I’m always trying to be one step ahead. It’s all about time, especially at the race track.”

The Coca-Cola 600 will take place Sunday, May 25th at 6:00 p.m. at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I wondered what feelings come up for Garcia this time of year, and he said, “It brings up a lot of mixed emotions…stuff you miss from the past and being there. It also raises awareness for fans and those who don’t think about it on a day to day basis. It’s a little bit of a reminder that we’re blessed to be able to do what we do, go to the track and enjoy the race. Somebody had to sacrifice for us to be able to do that.”

Garcia was quick to share the main lesson he learned while serving is to “never take anything for granted; your time, people around you, waking up and being able to go every day, because those things can change in an instant.” As far as the legacy he hopes to leave for the next generation? He states, “Anybody can accomplish anything in life they put their mind to. Life is forever changing. I was disappointed when my time in the military

ended, but other doors opened, and new opportunities came up. Life keeps going on.”

The Tar Heel State is home to some of the most stunning and diverse botanical gardens, which are like nature’s own symphonies – full of color, texture and life. And, guess what? SARAH P. DUKE GARDENS (DURHAM) If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Is this heaven?” while admiring meticulously manicured landscapes, chances are you’ve been to Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Located on the campus of Duke University, this 55-acre paradise is a testament to the artistry of nature. My advice – invest your time and money in people – they are tangible. Remember you are a product of your journey. You may not have chosen it, but you do have a choice in how you make the journey.

Embrace it, remember it and don’t waste the opportunity to learn from it.
