I’m beyond excited to feature my new friend Shannon on the cover, showcasing the coolest new boutique in Huntersville—MyMar Boutique and Bead Bar. We’re also thrilled to kick off a new series highlighting Western North Carolina artists. Our first feature is on Melinda Lawton Jewelry, and you can read all about her on page 40.
Exciting news for April: our 3rd Annual Boutique Crawl is on April 26th—mark your calendars and find all the details on page 34! This year, we’re proud to partner with NeoGenix Stem Cell & Regenerative Therapies as a presenting co-sponsor

A very special Happy Valentine’s Day to my sweetie—this marks our 44th Valentine’s Day together! Thank you for always being by my side.
Also, a Happy 35th Birthday to my baby girl and amazing business partner. Your love, support, and talent make everything we do together possible.
Finally, a Happy Birthday to our son Tanner… check out a few of our favorite pictures of him on page 82.
Thank you all for reading, and as always, please remember to let our advertising partners know where you saw them. Without our amazing readers and advertising partners, this magazine wouldn’t be possible.
WITH SO MUCH GRATITUDE, Keela

How would you describe your work?
My work is about painting meaningful reflections of nature, beauty and distinguished humanity, combining old world charm with modern day sophistication. The hallmark of my work is a distinctive palette rich with color, light and value. I love to create art that is beautiful, intelligent and classically skilled using oils and acrylics.
Bridging The Gap is a good example of my work combining my love for nature with messaging. In Calgary, Canada there is a large gorge where the right and the left cliffs are bridged by a giant heart-shaped rock. This painting was inspired during an election season when it was obvious to me that only a divine intervention could bridge the gap of vast differences in our nation. The painting’s imagery extends as a message of hope for every impossible situation that with God all things are possible.
Intermittently I divert to painting colorful abstracts. So, I would describe my work as classically refined with a wild side!
Which other artists most inspired you?
I am inspired by artists who are skilled in realism, specifically those who master chiaroscuro and light like Caravaggio, Rembrandt and John Singer Sargent. I am also captivated by Impressionists who convey their messaging using color and atmospheric dexterity like Monet and Cassatt.
Where do you find your best sources for inspiration?
Inspiration often comes to me in simple, but profound things that I enjoy…faith, family, friends, bird watching, people watching, sky watching, music, nature, gardening, and reading. Activities that draw me away from busyness and familiarity are a wellspring for endless messaging that inspires my paintings.
What is the greatest compliment you’ve received about your work?
Every compliment is a reward, but it is extra special when there is a genuine heart connection. One memorable highlight was when my painting, Covered in Red, spoke to the hearts of a couple who had suffered three miscarriages. The landscape depicts a large field of poppies sweeping the countryside of France that were planted as a memorial for those that died in WW1. The painting captures the visual story of redemption of life after death, of beauty from ashes. This husband and wife were overwhelmed with its messaging that spoke healing to their own hearts, and they bought it to celebrate their anniversary. Art has a way of speaking beyond words.
What are you working on now that you are excited about?
I am excited about pushing my expression through the elements of LIGHT and COLOR as seen in my recent heron painting, Love Is in The Air. North Carolina’s coast is home to flourishing egret and heron rookeries, and herons have a sentimental meaning for me and my husband since our first date. They always inspire a sense of awe, but the drama of this great heron with his full display of plumage really caught my heart. His unbridled joy speaks to me of freedom, and freedom is something this world longs for more of. A paintbrush full of extravagant color creating light out of darkness can be a powerful messenger.
What is one piece of creative advice you wish you had learned sooner?
No doubt I would be kinder to my younger self, have more fun and be less of a perfectionist. Though the drive towards perfectionism served me well in training my eye, it also resulted in insecurity, overworking pieces, and limited my presence in the public arena. My advice to all creatives today is GO FOR IT. Enjoy the journey, trust the process and press into fear.

It was such a pleasure when Justin and I got to bring our work home with us – quite literally – to create an incredible playroom for our oldest son, Brooks, who you’ve probably met at one of our stores!
Brooks celebrates his birthday on December 20th, so five days before Christmas, it’s extremely difficult to give him something special and make it feel different from a typical Christmas gift. While he had mentioned several times that he’d love to have his own mini refrigerator in his playroom, it didn’t dawn on me until a week before his eighth birthday that we should do a full-on playroom makeover for him – yes, including a candy and snack bar, mini fridge and, of course, a must-have extra large Lego area!
Fortunately, I was able to get my favorite carpenter out to the house on short notice to create a full built-in situation, and I also had a painter able to come over quickly. We stayed up all night one night organizing and getting ready for the grand surprise reveal, and it was worth every minute of lost sleep!
Since you’re probably wondering how we pulled this off in our own home, we posted a note on the door all week that said “Off Limits to Brooks Until His Birthday!” After the amazing reveal, he was so excited and came up and gave me a huge hug. Then, he said we were the best family ever!
This personal project also really spoke to a dream of mine at a young age. When I was little, I always wanted to decorate my own room and playroom, but sometimes, my parents put limits on what I could actually do. So, as a mom – even though I didn’t necessarily love those gamer neon signs or some of the slightly cheesy Minecraft accessories – I really wanted it to be special for him and not just an aesthetically pleasing designer space.
We feel it’s so important for kids to have their own spaces that are truly unique to them. It allows them to inspire their own creativity! And, Brooks couldn’t be happier in his personal space – after all, he does love his Legos and popcorn machine and all the things!

Thanks to her degree in musical theatre, Cassandra Howley Wood’s life has always been filled with beauty, fashion and design, and now as the owner of Buttercup Bride – as her website says – her days include “A touch of fabulous!”
That personal, almost magical, touch now awaits all brides-to-be who visit Buttercup Bride in Mooresville to find their dream wedding gown. Equally beautiful options for beloved mothers and bridesmaids can also be special ordered to complement your sizes and color needs.
Cassandra’s keen eye for design and passion for providing a truly personal experience are a winning combination, and don’t be surprised if you’re met with a dash of whimsical romance and dramatic glamour, as well! Those magical moments are wrapped in the ambiance of her charming boutique that emerged from a stroke of truly good luck three years ago.
“I love all things fashion, and bridal has always felt like the most exciting part of the fashion industry,” shares Cassandra. “I dreamed of opening a women’s boutique for years, and I wanted to be able to help all women, from petite to curvy, feel confident and beautiful. I truly felt I had the eye to help match every body type to the right style of clothing.”
The fortunate timing came in 2021 when Covid was still strong.
“The business inside of our building closed,” shares Cassandra. “My boyfriend (now husband) owned the building and offered me the opportunity to open my boutique! I knew it was off the beaten path a bit, so it needed to be a destination spot – and bridal is definitely a destination!”
Situated near downtown Mooresville, Buttercup Bride welcomes brides from both the Lake Norman and Charlotte areas, and is artfully designed to help clients embrace their own unique beauty. The dream behind Buttercup is a personal, luxurious experience, and Cassandra recognizes the privilege of guiding a bride to feeling her most beautiful on the happiest day of her life!
Cassandra is a recent bride herself, and she and husband, Sean, have a blended family of five children (four teenage boys and a nine-year-old girl) and two dogs.
“We aren’t a warehouse full of dresses or a bustling shop with brides bumping elbows,” says Cassandra. “Experience is our number one priority. Our staff truly cares for each of our brides – we don’t employ salespeople, we hire and train our staff to be honest, knowledgeable, caring and fun. We want every bride to leave having had the most magical and memorable experience.”
No matter your size or personal style, Cassandra promises a pampered experience beyond compare!
“I found my dream dress at Buttercup Bride and had the pleasure of actually working with the owner! She made me feel special at all times. I lost my mother two years ago, and it was definitely hard going wedding dress shopping without her, but the staff made it so easy! They also recommended an amazing seamstress who added custom sleeves to the already stunning dress. I couldn’t recommend them enough! Not only did I find my wedding dress, but my girls also found their bridesmaids’ dresses!” ~ BAYLEE E.
“I had a great experience at Buttercup Bride. The appointment was the most thoughtful and memorable dress fitting I had. My family and I felt so welcome at this shop. We were given wine and snacks in a perfect, no-pressure atmosphere. The gowns were beautiful and size-inclusive – this is a place where any bride will feel her most beautiful!” ~ SAVANNAH G.
“I had the most incredible experience at Buttercup Bride! I visited with my mom, and after a less-than-ideal experience at another boutique the week before, I was feeling a bit apprehensive. But, Emily turned everything around! From the moment I walked in, she
made me feel so comfortable and cared for. She pulled several dresses for me to try on, and I was blown away by how many I loved – it was almost impossible to narrow it down! I ended up with five dresses I absolutely adored, and Emily was so patient, even letting me try on my top picks again to make the final decision. The experience felt like a VIP moment – and the shop itself is absolutely adorable and welcoming. They truly have something for every bride, with dresses at all price points. I can’t recommend Buttercup Bride enough. Emily and the team will make you feel important, cared for and like the most beautiful version of yourself. A 10/10 experience!” ~ BROOKE E.
Buttercup Bride is located at 502 E. Center Avenue, Suite A, in Mooresville, NC, 704.512.1336. Visit buttercupbride.com to book your personal appointment or an appointment to select amazing dresses for your entire wedding party. The boutique is open Monday through Friday by appointment only, Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Follow Buttercup Bride on Instagram @buttercupbrideboutique for the latest details and trends!

Indulge in this creamy, high-protein whipped hot chocolate – a cozy treat that’s perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth while keeping you fueled!
Servings: 2
Prep time: 10 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
• 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
• 1 T cocoa powder
• 1/4 cup powdered sugar
• 2 cups milk of choice (I use cow’s milk)
• 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
Instructions:
1. In a medium metal or cold glass bowl, add cold heavy whipping cream, chocolate protein powder, cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Beat on high until the mixture starts to form soft peaks. Be careful not to overwhip – the whipped topping will sink if you do!
2. Warm the milk in the microwave until it becomes hot. Add milk to a mug and top with the whipped protein hot chocolate. You can put it in a piping or Ziploc bag and cut the corner of the bag with scissors to make it look fancier with a piped swirl!
3. Top with marshmallows, chocolate chunks or sprinkles!

When it comes to personal finance, one of the most common—and frustrating—answers you’ll hear is, “It depends.” Whether you’re asking about the best way to invest, how much you should save for retirement, or how to minimize your tax burden, the response is often the same. And while “It depends” might seem like a copout, it’s actually the most honest and accurate answer anyone can give.
Financial Advice Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
The reason “It depends” is the answer is simple: your financial situation is unique. General guidelines can be helpful, but true financial advice needs to be tailored to the individual. What works for one person may not work for another, and the right financial strategy for you depends on a variety of factors—including your age, income, lifestyle, risk tolerance, family situation, and future goals.
For example:
• “How much should I save for retirement?”
It depends on when you plan to retire, how much income you’ll need, what kind of lifestyle you envision, and what other sources of income (like Social Security) you’ll have. For one person, contributing 15% of their salary might be enough. For another, it may fall short.
• “Should I buy or lease a car?”
It depends on how often you drive, how long you plan to keep the car, your financial priorities, and even the terms of the deal. For some, leasing might make sense if they like driving a new car every few years. For others, buying and driving the car for 10 years could be the better choice.
• “How should I invest my money?”
It depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial goals. A portfolio that’s perfect for someone in their 30s, focused on long-term growth, could be too risky for someone in their 60s, who’s prioritizing income and capital preservation.
In today’s digital age, it’s easy to turn to Google for quick answers. A simple search can give you information on almost anything— investment strategies, tax tips, savings guidelines. But here’s the problem: Google doesn’t know your specific situation. While it can provide general information, it doesn’t consider your unique financial picture.
For example, you can Google “How much should I have saved for retirement by 40?” and you’ll likely find a broad recommendation—say, three times your salary. But that advice may not be right for you if you plan to retire early, live in an area with a high cost of living, or have a pension. Generic advice can be useful, but it’s no substitute for tailored guidance that takes your personal circumstances into account.
We understand that hearing “It depends” can be frustrating. After all, you’re looking for a clear answer! But the truth is, giving a blanket response to a complex financial question would be disingenuous. We could tell you to save 20% of your income or invest aggressively in your 30s, but without understanding your goals, those recommendations wouldn’t be meaningful.
That’s why working with a financial advisor is so important. We take the time to understand your specific situation, your financial goals, and your concerns, so that we can provide advice that’s truly tailored to you.
In the end, “It depends” isn’t a copout—it’s an invitation to dig deeper, to ask the right questions, and to create a financial plan that fits your life.

Sometimes a true life passion returns just when you need it most!
For Shannon Mahoney, creating her new lifestyle business – Mymar Boutique & Bead Bar – has provided the absolute perfect venture to introduce a new chapter in her life. Her charming new bead and charm bar in Huntersville can only be described as a lifelong dream for Shannon, whose love for the art of beading has finally come full circle.
The story of her landing in the Lake Norman area begins with Shannon and her former husband, Mike Tope, launching their own jewelry brand – Raintree – in 2012. Both savvy entrepreneurs, they quickly secured a national presence for their Vermont-based, family owned business named for the Pennsylvania farm where Shannon grew up. The brand’s strong success was a product of their many years of combined experience in custom jewelry design and manufacturing.
Fast forward to 2024, when they began to seek a better quality of life for their family and a local landscape more suited to small retail businesses. As a result, Charlotte, NC became their new home.
“North Carolina checked all the boxes,” says Shannon. “We loved that there are four seasons, so much culture and it’s easy to get anywhere in the country from our local airport hubs.”
As fate would have it, North Carolina has proven to be the perfect place to restructure their jewelry business, as well. The two separated in 2024, with Mike carrying on the more couture lines of Raintree and Shannon opening this new business that promises a super fun experience for all who visit as well as a comfortable landing spot for Shannon and her three kids.
“As a child, I always dreamed of having my own bead store,” she shares. “It’s an ideal way to get started with crafts if you have no experience. Plus, beading is so much fun and not at all overwhelming if you’re a novice!”
While Shannon was always captivated by the art of beading as a childhood hobby, she chose a more traditional college route until a favorite mentor convinced her to pursue the art path she truly loved. She was also trained in gold smithing and watchmaking, and found a career with well known watch manufacturers, including Rolex, while always keeping up with her jewelry designs on the side.
Shannon was also determined that her new business in the Lake Norman area would be something that worked well for her personally. The boutique’s hours allow flexible time to pick up her children and bring them back to the studio while she works with customers –truly a single mom’s dream scenario – and also incredibly fun for her kids.
“This is the business that makes sense for me right now,” she adds, excited to blend both the entrepreneurial and artistic worlds she loves so much
Family is definitely a priority at Mymar, which delights her daughter, Riley, 12, who enjoys
creating art with her mom – and who has even inspired Shannon to try her hand at painting! Her younger siblings, Rockford and Rexton, love the joyful mood at the new business, and it’s not surprising that Mymar is set up to host the best kid-friendly birthday parties, complete with a mini-kitchen, as well as beading classes for the younger set. There’s a kids’ corner for safe, creative play while parents shop; and for adults, Shannon loves to promote the shop for celebrating bachelorette parties and girls’ night out gatherings, and, of course, plans to host plenty of “Bead & Sip” events!
from Paper Source, candles handmade in France and beads from around the world.
Besides a focus on beading and charms, the adorable boutique also carries unique clothing and home accessories, other distinctive jewelry pieces and a curated collection of some of Shannon’s favorite specialty items. You’ll discover handmade clothing from Artists & Revolutionaries, stylish stationery
A true bonus for locals, the cozy space is also an open studio. If you purchase beads here, feel free to settle in and use the studio tables and tools to craft your own jewelry. If you’d prefer to bring your own beads, the tables and tools are easily available to rent.
In perfect time for Valentine’s Day, Mymar will introduce their Ever After Jewelry Bar with 14k gold, silver and gold-filled bracelets, anklets and necklaces available to weld on
for a clasp-free perfect fit. Each can be personalized with charms, initials, diamonds and gems – and the jewelry bar will be available for private parties. It’s a stylish and meaningful way to celebrate with your bestie, partner or family member.
The boutique is also an ideal shopping destination for other easy-to-love Valentine’s Day gifts including, of course, bead kits!
Make plans to gather here soon with your kids or best girlfriends, or plan an afternoon for yourself nurturing a new creative hobby! Mymar Boutique & Bead Bar is located at 9526 Rich Hatchet Road, Huntersville, NC, 704-237-4356. Boutique hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with Sundays and Mondays available for special events. Visit mymarnc.com for more information and details on beading classes, and follow @mymarnc on Instagram for boutique news and event updates.

Perhaps you read the title of this piece and thought “I need to read this.” Or maybe you scratched your head and said out loud “What? Retirement is supposed to be stress free!”
As much as we’d all like stress to be an experience we can leave behind in our hectic, working life, it’s not that simple. A surprising 56% of folks literally lose sleep because they are stressed out just thinking about retirement.
Here’s a little more sobering news:
When measured in terms of 43 stress-inducing life events, retirement ranks number 10! Research indicates that is more stress than the changed health of a family member or one’s personal financial situation. But why? Often because it’s not just about exiting the workplace. It’s about the many concurrent changes that accompany doing so. Things like creating a new daily routine, struggling with a post-work identity, missing the social life and connections built in the workplace, a frightening health diagnosis, or even a late in life divorce from a long-time spouse.
Social worker Robert Laura who counsels retirees explains that, “Many of these things are difficult to deal with. But it’s also why we should be teaching people about resilience and positive psychology instead of just asset allocation and stock market returns.”
I couldn’t agree more. Please read on.
MANAGE YOUR RETIREMENT STRESS
If you are experiencing retirement stress, the first thing you can do for yourself is to accept that this stress is normal.
I know, if you buy into what all of the ads suggest, you may think there is something “wrong” with you. There isn’t, so please let that go! Then reach for tactics you can put into place every day that will help to relieve your stress so that you can enjoy your retirement:
• Ask “What do I want this stage in my life to be about?” Listen to “what comes up” for you and focus on the feelings and experiences you want to have instead of the “things.”
• Tap into the expertise you need. This is no time to be a lone ranger. Engage or reengage with a financial planner, your health care provider and others who can help you get foundational matters in shape.
• Allow yourself time to adapt. Retirement is a big change in every respect. Respect that and give yourself the latitude to experiment with new habits and routines. You will learn about yourself in the process.
• Try new things. Being retired is a new experience. Dip your toe in the water and do something different. Or do as one of my friends did – she picked up a long-abandoned interest with great gusto. For her it was playing the banjo!
• Embrace the great outdoors. You’ve heard it before because it is true: you’ll get an immediate mood boost when you spend time in natural surroundings.
• Get moving! Same here: exercise of any kind has a positive impact on your sense of well-being as well as your physical health. Remember those experts I mentioned? Your health plan likely includes FREE access to gyms and other resources. Take the first step and see where it leads...
• Make some plans. Staring at a blank calendar or one strewn with doctor appointments can make anyone’s stress soar! Be sure to intentionally add coffee dates, museum visits, golf outings, or whatever floats your boat.
Most of all, remind yourself that you can manage retirement stress, especially if you keep in mind that retirement is a work in progress that takes time to perfect!

As we head into the new year full of excitement and filled with goals and good intentions, make sure to pay attention to the impact that your environment plays in your life. The spaces we inhabit play a significant role in shaping our mental and emotional health. From the cluttered corners of our homes to the vast expanses of natural landscapes, every element of our physical environment impacts how we feel, think and even interact with the world around us. Among these, outdoor spaces, particularly those with natural beauty, hold a unique power to enhance emotional well being.
Our surroundings can either soothe or stress us, and the science behind this is compelling. Research has shown that time spent in peaceful outdoor environments can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and enhance overall mood. This is because nature stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging relaxation and calmness.
Beautiful outdoor spaces offer an antidote to the modern day hustle. Here are some ways these spaces can positively influence emotional well being:
1. Stress Reduction: Immersing oneself in nature has been found to decrease cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. Sitting outside with the sun on your skin surrounded by sounds of nature can bring about noticeable improvements in mood and energy levels.
2. Boosted Creativity and Focus: Time spent outdoors enhances cognitive function. Studies suggest that natural settings replenish our attention, making us more creative and focused upon returning to daily tasks.
3. Connection to Something Greater: Nature has a unique way of reminding us of the vastness of life. Watching a sunrise, hearing birdsong or feeling the wind can ground us, providing perspective and fostering a sense of gratitude.
4. Physical Health Benefits: The emotional benefits of being outdoors are intertwined with physical ones. Activities like walking, gardening or cycling in beautiful environments encourage movement, which releases endorphins – the body’s natural mood elevators.
You don’t need to live near a national park to experience these benefits. Here are some practical ways to incorporate beautiful outdoor spaces into your life:
• Enhance Your Immediate Environment: Transform your backyard or balcony into a mini sanctuary with comfortable seating, beautiful accents, plants and personal touches like fairy lights or water features.
• Visit Local Green Spaces: Explore nearby parks, botanical gardens or nature trails. Even urban areas often have hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
• Make it a Routine: Commit to spending a few minutes each day outdoors, whether it’s sipping coffee on your porch or taking a stroll during lunch breaks.
In a world filled with digital distractions and urban chaos, the need for serene, beautiful spaces has never been greater. Prioritizing time in outdoor environments isn’t just a luxury; it’s a vital component of emotional well being. Whether it’s a lush garden, a quiet seating area or a swing in a hammock, these spaces offer us a chance to pause, breathe and reconnect with both nature and ourselves.
So, the next time life feels overwhelming, step outside. Let the beauty of the world around you remind you of life’s simplicity and splendor. Sometimes, the path to inner peace is right out your back door.
If you are looking for inspiration in creating an inviting outdoor space of your own, please stop in to see us at The Garden Room. We specialize in helping individuals create beautiful and calming outdoor spaces. Whether you’re looking for the perfect lounge chair, unique garden decor or expert advice, we’re here to assist you in transforming your outdoor area into a personal sanctuary.

There’s nothing like a warm pot of chili when the cold weather hits. To take it to the next level, I love adding a smoky depth of flavor by cooking the chili on a smoker.
Smoked ground beef, combined with a perfect blend of classic chili ingredients, brings out the essence of fall. Whether you’re lounging on a chilly day with your favorite football team or entertaining a crowd with minimal effort, this recipe lets you spend more time enjoying company while the chili practically cooks itself.
I’ve seen a lot of buzz online—on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook—about this “over-the-top” chili. After trying it myself, I totally understand why it’s a hit. While it was trending on social media, I couldn’t find a clear step-by-step recipe, so I decided to freestyle—and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I had a blast playing around with some of my favorite seasonings, and I hope you’ll enjoy this smoky twist on a fall and winter classic as much as I did.
Ingredients:
• 1 onion, diced
• 3 cloves of garlic (minced)
• 2 Tbsp olive oil
• 1 jalapeño, diced (or two if you like heat)
• 2 bell peppers, diced
• 2 cans of diced tomatoes
• 2 cans of Rotel (fire-roasted and hot are my favorites)
• 1 can of navy beans or great northern beans (drained)
• 1 (or 2) can of red kidney beans
• 2 lbs. of 80/20 ground beef (or 93/7, whatever your preference is)
• 3 cups of beef broth
• 1 packet of Fire & Smoke Society Chili Homestyle seasoning
Instructions:
1. Preheat your smoker to 275-300°F (lower temperatures will give a stronger smoky flavor if you have extra time).
2. Sauté the garlic onion, jalapeño, and bell peppers in a Dutch oven with a splash of olive oil until softened.
3. Add the tomatoes, Rotel, beans, and seasonings into the Dutch oven. Stir well.
4. Then add your beef broth, stir well.
5. Simmer on low while you prepare the ground beef. Form the beef into a dome-shaped ball (flat on the bottom) to sit on the grill grate (or wire rack) above the Dutch oven.
6. Season the ground beef with a sprinkle of chili powder, cumin salt, and pepper. (Whatever you like)
7. Place the Dutch oven in the smoker and position the beef directly above it, either on the rack or on a wire rack/grill grate placed over the Dutch oven.
8. Stir the chili every 30 minutes or so to ensure it doesn’t reduce too much or burn.
9. Cook the ground beef on top until it reaches an internal temperature of 145-150°F. Once done, crumble the beef into small pieces and mix it into the chili.
10. Stir the chili well, and continue smoking for another 30 minutes to an hour, stirring occasionally to incorporate the flavors.
11. Once the chili has reached your desired thickness and flavor, remove it from the smoker and serve. I recommend topping it with shredded cheese, fresh avocado slices, and using Frito scoops instead of a spoon!

In a year filled with an immense range of emotions for the talented artisans who call Western North Carolina home, brilliant jewelry designer Melinda Lawton takes every opportunity to remind folks how important it is to support small businesses.
“Shopping small has been our motto for the past several months – especially given the impact of Hurricane Helene – and will continue to be in the coming year,” Melinda shares. “We need tourists to come visit our area. Don’t hesitate! All of the artists and craftspeople here need your support as we are all in the process of rebuilding our businesses and lives!”
Melinda moved to this beautiful North Carolina destination in 2011 and opened her store – Sweet Magnolia Gallery – in 2013. It’s quite a change from her 30 years as a designer for film and television in Los Angeles but offered the perfect chance to be closer to her family and their strong Southern roots.
While her own business escaped physical damage during the hurricane, a large collection of jewelry she had just dropped off at the Grand Bohemian Hotel Gallery in Asheville right before Helene hit, is still unaccounted for.
“The gallery had more than 10 feet of water rushing through the lobby. They are in the process of rebuilding, and my prayers are that the Biltmore Village area once again becomes the vibrant destination it once was – we are all helping each other as best we can. My studio business in October, November and December was down more than 50% from last year, and I’m sure that’s the case for many businesses in this area.“
Despite the year’s challenges, Melinda is more inspired than ever to create one-of-a-kind designs that women find empowering.
“Because my jewelry is made with love, I do believe the women who wear it can feel the energy those pieces bring to their lives,” she shares. “My designs are born from a deep well of inspiration and gratitude, and I feel so blessed to be able to work with beautiful gemstones, often taking cues from those gems as to what they want to be! My designs are vintage-inspired, and I am obsessed with
all things old. My home is filled with antique items I use every day.”
Melinda says she’s currently “in love with creating rings,” and started her own line of one-of-a-kind rings during the pandemic.
“Since then, I’ve had so much fun creating them,” she adds. “I also just made a pair of earrings with beautiful Ethiopian Opal briolettes from the Welo mine. Welo Opals are known for their vibrant play of color, and I paired them with Blue Green Zircons, Rubellite tourmalines and diamonds to match the colors they give off. I call them ‘Ethereal Dream Earrings,’ and I’d
definitely say they would make a beautiful Valentine’s Day gift for some lucky woman!”
When Jacqueline Bassett, owner of Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts in Mooresville, discovered Melinda’s unique designs, she knew they belonged in her beautifully curated boutique. Juelerye proudly presents many stunning pieces of Melinda Lawton Jewelry, and last fall featured Melinda at the Mooresville Gallery Crawl, where clients met the artist and saw firsthand the exquisite details of her designs.
Jacqueline also wears a lovely Melinda Lawton ring herself – a cushion-cut Apricot Tourmaline surrounded by Champagne Diamonds and two round green sapphires.
“I’m so thankful to have my jewelry represented by Juelerye and many other galleries around the country,” shares Melinda, who was recently accepted into an amazing Jewelry Gallery in Paris and St. Tropez. “Another recent proud moment came when Stevie Nicks bought several pieces of my jewelry when she was in Greenville for her concert, and a guest of the Grand Bohemian Hotel!”
You can join the ongoing efforts to support beloved Western North Carolina artists as they rebuild their businesses. Visit Sweet Magnolia Gallery, Studio/Store of Melinda Lawton Jewelry at 1406 Greenville Highway in Hendersonville, NC, 828.697.2212. Follow Melinda’s continuing creative journey at melindalawton.com, and watch for Valentine’s Day inspiration and the arrival of amazing new pieces on Instagram @melindalawtonjewelry.

Offering medical aesthetic services from its new location in the heart of Cornelius, NC, Uplift Skin & Body Medspa is the perfect blend of modern luxury and southern hospitality.
Owner Dr. Trupti Patel knew this lovely historic house – built in 1911 and enhanced with an incredible wraparound porch –would welcome clients with just the vibe she envisioned.
“You know that feeling when you walk into a place, feel welcomed and instantly exhale? That’s what we’ve created here,” she explains. “We wanted to strip away that sterile feel you get at some medspas, so we’ve created intimate treatment spaces that feel both elevated and approachable.”
Dr. Patel says her team of four is united by a simple truth: This business isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about transformation.
“Those moments when a busy mom finally prioritizes herself or when someone’s outer results ignite their inner confidence – that’s what drives us,” shares Emma Dusterhoff, manager and aesthetician. “Every treatment
is an opportunity to create not just physical changes, but emotional ones, as well. That privilege of being part of someone’s journey keeps us passionate and focused,” emphasizes injector Sarah Stokas.
Signature treatments include advanced skin tightening and contouring Morpheus8, SkinPen micro-needling, customized medicalgrade facials and precision Botox. For 2025, Uplift will be introducing a collection of packages that include their most popular treatments and skincare options that are perfect for those dipping their toes into medical aesthetics for the first time, for brides to be or for those looking to elevate their current routine.
“What sets us apart is we are patients, too, and if it’s not ‘worth it’ to us, we know it’s not worth it for you,” Dr. Patel explains. “We wanted to create packages that ensure results and align with investment. Every treatment recommendation comes from a place of medical expertise and genuine care. We’re not interested in selling treatments –we’re invested in outcomes and experience. Our clients choose us because they know we prioritize results over revenue. We know the investment will be worth it through education, transparency and proven results.”
“We want you to feel amazing and experience luxury because you deserve this!” says
Nevaeh Dudas aesthetician and patient care coordinator. Dr. Patel continues, “At Uplift, we’re dedicated to you feeling good about what’s in the mirror, as well as the process behind it. I want our own moms who have never even thought about aesthetics to be able to come in and feel they are in the right place. Our patient testimonials prove that.”
“Coming from Emergency Medicine, patient safety is hardwired into everything we do,” Dr. Patel explains. “Sometimes that means tough conversations about different treatments than what a patient initially wanted, or with parents requesting aesthetic procedures for their children that are developmentally inappropriate. This medical-first mindset often surprises people in aesthetics, but it’s non-negotiable for us.”
Great results start with safety. Dr. Patel also notes that while the medspa industry is growing quickly, with endless options available, it’s so important to know who is doing your procedures, injecting your face and giving you advice. Providing an amazing experience at Uplift with your health in mind will always be one of our most important values – health – not simply your skin.
“When you visit Uplift Skin & Body Medspa, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and step into a tranquil space, experience a nonpressuring approach and receive care from providers who are just as invested in your results as you are.”
They are located at 21016 Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, NC, 704.604.5654. Learn more about their services and book your appointment online at upliftskinandbody.com, and follow them for updates and inspiration on Facebook and Instagram @upliftskinandbodymedspa.

Honestly, I can’t count the reasons why I love my sister as much as I do. But, I can zero in on one: her kindness. As a medical social worker, her kindness touches patients, their families and those who care for them while navigating the complexities of the healthcare system. My sister’s kindness isn’t something she turns on when she pulls into work and puts the brakes on when she leaves. Instead, it is integral to who she is. On our recent sisters’ weekend in Connecticut, she shared that she was planning to bake a cake for the staff at her hair salon to commemorate her 10th anniversary as a customer. Wait...she’s baking for them? Who does that? It’s kindness, pure and simple, bringing to mind the wise words of Kirpal Singh: “Kind hearts are the gardens. Kind thoughts are the roots. Kind words are the blossoms. Kind deeds are the fruits.”
If a kind heart is the garden, how do we cultivate it so that it bears the fruits of kindness? By adopting the characteristics of kind people, by being:
• empathetic
• a good listener
• sociable
• generous with what we have
• charitable
• helpful
• courteous
• open-minded
• caring and nurturing
And by:
• canceling our judgmental thoughts
• being mindful of our words
• being intentionally kind with our deeds
How would we be different, “better,” if we did so? The American Psychiatric Association notes that kindness can increase happiness and self-esteem, while decreasing stress and emotional reactivity. And yet, we tend to limit our acts of kindness because we underestimate their value. On the receiving end, people see greater value in the warmth of the gesture and the positive social interaction that we, the givers, do. And, one more thing – you may have observed that kindness can be contagious. People who receive acts of kindness are likely to be more generous themselves. That makes sense because helping others and being kind are proven to reduce stress, improve our emotional well-being and even benefit our physical health. Another way to say it? Doing good does you good. It feels good to be kind!
While all 365 days of the year are ripe with opportunities to express kindness –such as baking an unexpected cake in appreciation and gratitude, February 17th is celebrated as Random Acts of Kindness Day. How will you express the kindness that is in your heart?
HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE, THOUGHTFUL WAYS THAT YOU CAN SHARE THE FRUITS OF KINDNESS:
Reach out:
• Call, send flowers, mail a handwritten note or inspirational quote.
• Contact someone you haven’t seen in a while and arrange to meet face to face.
• Send an interesting article to a friend.
• Invite neighbors in for a casual get together.
• Engage in conversation with a clerk or receptionist.
• Volunteer in your community.
• Reach out to spend time with someone who is experiencing loneliness.
• Get to know your new coworker.
• Listen to that coworker who is having a bad day.
• For heaven’s sake, say good morning!
• Smile, wave or say hello to people you pass every day. Encourage someone:
• Tell them why you are proud of them.
• Support them in getting active.
Offer help:
• Run an errand for a neighbor.
• Walk your friend’s dog.
Express appreciation:
• Tell friends and family members how much you love and appreciate them.
• Give praise to your colleague for something they’ve done well.
Offer support:
• Make someone laugh.
• Send someone a joke to cheer them up.
• Send someone a picture of a cute animal.
• Put a surprise note or drawing on someone’s desk.
Share what you have:
• Take your stuff to Goodwill.
• Make and send a care package to someone who needs it.
• Donate to a charity.
Be gracious:
• Give up your seat, wherever you are.
• Let someone get ahead of you in line.
• Take a minute to help someone who is lost.
• Hold the door for someone.
• Let a fellow driver merge into your lane.
• Pick up trash in your neighborhood.

Every third Monday in February, Americans celebrate President’s Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the nation’s past leaders. But, while the holiday has evolved into a day filled with mattress sales and car discounts, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the true significance of the day – and, perhaps, have a few laughs along the way.
President’s Day, as we know it today, was originally established to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Washington’s birthday, February 22nd on the Gregorian calendar, was initially recognized as a national holiday in 1885. However, when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in 1968, President’s Day was moved to the third Monday in February, ensuring a long weekend for American workers.
While it was originally intended to celebrate Washington, the holiday now serves as a day to honor all U.S. presidents – whether they’re remembered for their legendary accomplishments or, let’s say, their lessthan-stellar moments in office. The result? A holiday that doesn’t necessarily focus on one person but rather celebrates the quirky, colorful and sometimes downright strange history of the presidency itself.
For instance, did you know that President William Howard Taft, the 27th president, was rumored to have gotten stuck in the White House bathtub? At 330 pounds, Taft’s love of food was legendary, and the story goes that he was once unable to extricate himself. Although this was only rumor, not fact, President Taft did indeed need to travel to Panama to inspect progress on the Panama Canal. Prior to the trip, he had a bathtub custom built and installed for himself on the USS North Carolina. The tub measured seven feet, one inch long, 41 inches wide and weighed one ton. Taft’s
“bathroom troubles” may not make for the most glamorous legacy, but they certainly add a touch of humor to the history books.
Or, consider President Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, who had a bit of a temper. It’s a fact that Jackson once had a duel with Charles Dickinson, a man who had insulted him. While the deadly duel two years earlier between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton is the most famous in American history, Jackson was a frequent dueler among the prominent politicians of the dueling age, which lasted up until the Civil War era. The future president survived Dickinson’s first shot, but Jackson’s pistol jammed. In a breach of the code duello, Jackson re-cocked his pistol and killed Dickinson. Jackson’s toughness became the stuff of legend – though, let’s be honest, most people would have stayed away from any duel if they knew it involved such bad manners and poor judgment.
President’s Day also provides the perfect opportunity to explore some of the more unusual hobbies and quirks of U.S. presidents. For example, President John Quincy Adams had a rather interesting way of starting his day – he enjoyed an early morning swim in the Potomac River, often without his clothes. Talk about a daring start to the day! His morning routine must have given new meaning to the idea of “early risers” and “streaking” in the 19th century.
President Calvin Coolidge enjoyed horseback riding for exercise, and when the secret service asked
him to give up his rides, in the interest of safety and time, he acquired an electric horse for the White House. He would ride it up to two to three times a day, and the mechanical horse had two variable gaits, “trot” and “gallop.”
While the holiday may have started with a more somber and serious tone, today, President’s Day is largely recognized as a time for great deals and sales. Americans flock to stores, both physical and online, to snag everything from appliances to clothes, and yes, even mattresses.
But, don’t let the commercialization fool you. Despite the mattress ads and car dealership promotions, President’s Day is still a time for many to reflect on the history and legacy of America’s leaders. It’s a reminder that, while the presidency may have its ups and downs, it also provides some hilarious and eccentric stories that make this holiday anything but boring.
So, this President’s Day, whether you’re basking in the glow of a mattress sale or reading up on the more humorous aspects of U.S. history, take a moment to raise a glass to the oddities, mishaps and triumphs of our presidents. They may not always be perfect, but they sure make for an entertaining bunch. In the end, it’s not just about commemorating the great leaders; it’s about enjoying the ride through American history – flaws, fun facts and all. Happy President’s Day!

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be reserved for only the people in relationships, am I right? It’s for everyone, so ladies, if you are wanting to celebrate with your favorite gals, keep reading for ideas on how to throw the ultimate Galentine’s Day party!
The first thing you need to decide is where you’re hosting. Are you renting a room out at a restaurant, outdoor space or are you hosting in your home? Wherever you choose, you’ll want to add some glam to your space! This can be done pretty easily and inexpensively. Snag the $1, $3 or $5 festive decor items at the Bullseye Playground in Target, and then head over to the Dollar Tree for any festive disposable items you’ll need such as plates, napkins and cups. Also, anytime you can light some candles and add fresh flowers to your tablescape, it’s immediately next level.
What’s a party without food? I suggest hosting a brunch or an appetizer and dessert party. If you do brunch, keep it simple with heartshaped pancakes and waffles, a mimosa bar, lattes and a fruit tray. If the party is in the evening, prepare some charcuterie boards, chocolate fondue and a candy bar. Pinterest is your best friend for finding ways to dress up the food items to fit the Galentine’s Day theme!
I’m creating the music playlist ahead of time with some love-inspired classics to set the vibe. I’m going for girly, flirty, whimsical and fun! Some of my favorites, you ask? “Lover” by Taylor Swift, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain, “Love on Top” by Beyonce, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper and “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None The Richer. You could even make your spotify playlist shareable to allow your guests to add their favorites, as well!
What’s everyone wearing? Whether it’s a pajama party, an athleisure vibe or a bit fancier, I’d encourage your gal pals to dress in festive colors like reds, pinks and white. This will make
for super cute photos, of course, and it just adds to the fun! Speaking of photos…if it’s in your budget to rent a photo booth, then go all out! If not, create your own photo area with some decor and fun props. Set up the tripod and camera to get photos of everyone before the party ends.
We’ve covered location, decor, food, music and dress code, but what about activities? This all depends on your budget. If you have room in your budget, maybe you invite someone who does permanent jewelry, a gift that keeps on giving. Not your thing or what
you’re going for? No problem! Other ideas include watching a classic romcom, making Galentine’s cards for one another, DIY flower bouquets, playing board games, spa night treatments or maybe you get a little wild and pull out that karaoke machine!
There are so many different directions you can go, but hopefully, this article helps spark that creativity in you to get started on planning your own ultimate Galentine’s Day party. Now, grab your besties and get to planning! Anytime the girls can get together, it’s bound to be a good time. Happy planning!

Love month has arrived which means you have two weeks to finalize your Valentine’s Day plans if you haven’t already done so…and let’s be honest, that’s probably most of us! I used to expect my husband to plan our Valentine’s Day each year; and then one year it dawned on me that the holiday is for us, so we started the tradition of taking turns, and this is my year to plan.
Depending on the stage of life you’re in, your plans might look different than years prior. For instance, maybe in past years you’ve done the fancy dinners out and jazz bars, but this year you’re new parents and leaving the baby with a sitter isn’t an option. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you’re intentional about spending time with one another. Check out these ideas below.
1. Go Out for a Nice Dinner
There’s not a thing wrong with keeping it traditional, y’all, and who doesn’t appreciate a good excuse to buy a cute new outfit? I listed some of my local favorites below. Make those reservations QUICK!

• Epic Chophouse
• 131 MAIN
• North Harbor Club
• On the Nines Bistro

2. BoatYard LKN

This is one of my favorite places to go for a relaxed date in a beautiful location. Share some food, get a wine flight, listen to live music and take a walk hand in hand alongside the creek on their property. Sweet and slow, can’t go wrong.
5. The Pit
Feel the need for action and speed? Head over to The Pit Indoor Kart Racing, and race some go-karts together! They also have arcade games, axe throwing, black light mini golf and more. Sure to be a good time.
6. Slumber Party
Date night in, but make it intentional! Throw on some cute pajamas, order your favorite pizza to be delivered, pop the champagne, light some candles and enjoy a slow down together. Talk about life, dreams and love, and then snuggle up for a movie or play a board game!
7. Lake Norman State Park
Feel like moving your bodies and being outside? Head over to Lake Norman State Park for a hike and picnic lunch together!
8. Valentine’s Day Brunch at Home
Who says the celebration of love can’t start early? Allow yourselves to sleep in a bit, then get up and prepare a brunch at home together! Throw it all on a charcuterie board for a cutesy presentation, play some lovely tunes and don’t forget a mimosa bar and coffee!
9. Lake Norman Antique Mall
If you’re into antiquing, you could spend hours walking around Lake Norman Antique Mall. Find a gift for your loved one or turn it into a fun scavenger hunt! Don’t forget to grab a latte at Defined Coffee beforehand!
10. Dynamic Ballroom
Do you love to dance? Or does it make you nervous? Get out of your comfort zone a bit, get your groove on and set up a dance lesson together or join a group lesson at Dynamic Ballroom!
There are so many options for fun together in the Lake Norman area! Create some space to spend intentional time with your significant other whether it’s on Valentine’s Day or not! Time together is the best time.

• Do you sometimes feel that you have too much on your plate, and you have no idea how you will get it all done?
• Do you feel more driven by what’s urgent than by what’s really important to you?
• When you saw the title above, did you identify with the word overwhelmed?
If there was even one “yes” among your answers, you’re hardly alone in that feeling. Many psychologists, counselors and other thoughtful observers of 21st century society think people today are more overwhelmed than those who lived in past generations. I agree, and I think one reason we’re more chronically overwhelmed can be explained in just two words – too much. For example, many of us are all but drowning in:
• Too much information. Every day, we are exposed to hundreds, sometimes thousands, of bits of information from emails, texts, phone calls, junk mail, voice mail, meetings at work and advertising on billboards, TV, the internet and radio. This relentless flow of information distracts us, interrupts our train of thought and forces us to decide, often dozens of times a day: Should I respond now, save it for later or ignore it? Each piece of information eats away a tiny chunk of our time and depletes a bit of our finite daily reserves of emotional and mental bandwidth.
• Too much stuff. Not everyone has too much stuff, of course. Some don’t have enough; others have enough to be comfortable; and some have way more than they need. It’s fair to say though that no matter which category people are in, many – perhaps most – want more stuff. That’s because, in our culture, we place a high value on material things. There is nothing inherently wrong with owning stuff. It’s just that many possessions come with invisible strings attached. When we have too much stuff that we must insure, keep clean, update, polish, paint, maintain, organize and/or store, stuff can be more of a burden than a blessing. The time-draining responsibilities that go with owning so much stuff often contribute heavily to our sense of being overwhelmed.
• Too much bad news. Most of us are mentally and emotionally “wired” to process tragic news perhaps a few times a year. Thanks to high speed worldwide newsgathering, we now hear about some kind of tragedy just about every day. The relentless flow of heartbreaking news from all over the world also contributes to our sense of being overwhelmed.
All of this is in addition to the normal things we all have to manage – grocery shopping, getting gas, laundry, bills, cleaning up the kitchen, answering emails, doctor appointments, relationships with family and friends, and so much more.
Clearly, the pace and intensity of daily life has dramatically increased in our generation. We can get so over-busy and overwhelmed that we look like the poster child for what some have called “full plate, empty life.” Needless to say, “full plate, empty life” is not the life God had planned for any of us! Once we recognize this, the question becomes, how can we stop living so stressed out and overwhelmed? The final chapters of this faith-based mini-book are devoted to answering that question, helping readers find balance, sanity and a more meaningful life. The focus is first on discovering what we’ve each been uniquely created and gifted to do, and then making changes and choices to align our lives accordingly.
Overwhelmed urges readers to set priorities consistent with their purpose, set boundaries to protect them and use their time and talents to do meaningful, enjoyable work that also brings honor to God. When we live in ways that are in sync with how we’re made and gifted, we are more insulated from many of the things that might otherwise overwhelm us.
When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Psalm 142:3 (NLT)

This story is about being run over, not by a car or other wheeled vehicle, it’s about being run over by a boat. Let me go back to the beginning of this story. There was a lady who lost her husband in a divorce. But she got the boat, a nice sailboat about 40 feet in length. And she made up her mind that she was going to sail down to the Exumas this year, even without her husband. She had to hire a licensed captain. She found one willing to take the trip for a few months and return to the Jersey Shore. He said that he was an alcoholic and had to go to the AA meetings
is noted for 3 hurricane holes. These are well protected areas with up to 360° protection from the wind. This is where most of the boats go. Our plan was to continue to the Georgetown Yacht Club, which really isn’t a Yacht Club. It’s just a place to anchor. And everybody who knows about the place tells other boaters that is not worth going there. There’s not much beach, the entrance is tricky and shallow, and it’s just not welcoming. There are no buildings there. And fewer boats. That’s why we were heading there.
We’ve never been in the Exumas when we didn’t see at least one boat sink. There are absolutely no markings in the area. We ran into a problem on the way down because we were using the Yachtsman’s Guide, and this says you want to line up the pink house up with the blue house and then continue on a magnetic heading of 045 degrees. We couldn’t find the houses. They must have painted one of them. Anyway, we worked our way in, avoiding the coral heads and slipped into the town of Georgetown. Then we continued south and made a right turn into our anchorage. We like this area. It is a little bit south of Georgetown, but you can still get there by dingy. At 5pm everybody brings out their homemade conk horn and starts blowing. This means happy hour on the beach. I don’t think we missed a single one. Anyway, back to the story. We took our dingy into Georgetown and we ran across Captain Joe. He was the commercial captain who was running the boat for our lady friend. He said that he came into town last night to go to an AA meeting. After the meeting was over it was quite dark, in fact, pitch black. As he was leaving to go back to his boat, he heard
the engines start on another boat, an inboard, powerful, with two engines, and no lights. They make their runs back to the states with drugs and no lights. He had a flashlight, and he shined it in the direction of the sound, but it was too late because the boat ran right over him. I said you’re kidding. He said, “No I’m not kidding. Here look at my slicker (a long loose oilskin rain jacket)”. It had skid marks from the bottom of the boat as it ran over him. He said “I just stopped, I was in my inflatable and this thing just tore off and came right at me. Before I even knew what was happening this boat was gone. And there’s the marks on my slicker.” I could not believe it. I said, are you hurt do we need to take you to a hospital or something? He said “no, no. I’m fine, I ducked down real low, and I was in the inflatable.” I said wow what a story. Who would believe this?
I guess we stayed about four months down in the area. The water is just magnificent, I mean you can see 30 feet down with no problems at all. We got our fill of bananas, coconuts, sunshine, and lobsters, time to go.
We anchored out on the flats, got a good night’s sleep, and arrived in Florida just after the sun was up. After we cleared customs, we decided to go up the waterway because we wanted to stop in Savannah and see our friend. We checked into the Savannah Marina and lo and behold the dock master is the captain we met down in the Exumas. He was the captain of the lady’s boat and now he was dockmaster here in Savannah. We shared some good times while talking about boats. Eventually, we got to the incident that he had when he was down in Georgetown. Before I knew it, he got up, went into his closet, opened it up and pulled out his slicker that had skid marks from the boat on the back of it. I couldn’t believe it. He brought it with him. He had survived being run over by a boat and it didn’t even put a hole in the slicker. But there it was, and here we are, talking about it. And that’s how to get run over by a boat and survive.
Dear Dr. Keith,
I’m a 28-year-old woman who’s been dating my boyfriend for more than three years. We’re both in the hospitality industry and met while working at the same property. A few months after we started dating, he got a promotion that would require him to move to Portland, Oregon. Since we were going to attempt a long distance relationship anyway, I accepted a promotion that would require me to move to Charlotte. When my boyfriend and I met, we talked about what we wanted in a relationship. We discussed the future regarding marriage, children and goals, and were in sync. We fell in love and committed to our current long distance relationship. Our differences started to rear their ugly heads quite quickly. I’m not much of a drinker, and he likes to drink a little too much. He’s more of an introvert than I am. He’s obsessed with playing video games where I prefer hiking, biking and other outdoor activities. I’m close with my family; he’s not. I was clear with him that I wanted to be engaged within a year of us committing to each other; it’s now been more than three years and no engagement. The distance wasn’t an issue at first. We made sure I’d go to Portland or he’d come here at least every other month. We get along great when we’re together, however, the situation has become more difficult as time has passed. We used to talk or text every day, now, maybe three times a week. He’s been going out frequently with co-workers drinking until early in the morning. He’s been reprimanded multiple times for being late to work, and we’ve been fighting a lot. I only know this because these are things he’s told me; who knows what he hasn’t been forthright about? When I first met him, I was sure he was the man I was going to marry, but now I’m not so sure. He’s not the same man I fell in love with, however, I don’t want to fail him. He recently told me that if this is going to work, one of us has to move, and it’s not going to be him. Do I take a chance, give up my wonderful job and city that I enjoy to honor my commitment and see if we have a future together, or should I let go of the man I love?
~ Cynthia M., Charlotte
By KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
Hey Cynthia,
Congratulations on finding a job and city that you enjoy. That in and of itself is a challenge for most people. If you’re truly honest with yourself, this relationship has many red flags that are quite large. The question you need to ask yourself is, “Did I fall in love with the man or the illusion of what I think the man, and relationship could be?” It’s never a good thing to want something so badly that it blurs your judgment. The old saying, “Love is Blind” is true because love is blinding at times. Long distance relationships rarely survive; they’re generally unsustainable. You need to invest time in getting to know someone, especially if you’re going to commit to raising children and spending the rest of your lives together. That’s a challenge when you’re not sharing the daily routines of each other’s lives, the good, bad and ugly. Throughout my life and in my career, the relationships I’ve observed that have been successful are based in love, friendship, good communication and commonality. Your differences will become more challenging as your relationship progresses. Unfortunately, many people get married for the wrong reasons: family pressure, peer pressure, time clock ticking and religious beliefs instead of love. Many people in those marriages are unhappy, unfulfilled and too many end in divorce. Relationships are not about
sacrifice, they’re about compromise and, more importantly, they are about negotiation. One year has become three, drinking until all hours of the night, problems at work – all of these aren’t behaviors of a responsible person. If you think marriage is the solution for his issues, there’s a good chance you’ll be disappointed. I don’t believe it’s a good idea for anyone to let a man, woman or relationship get in the way of their dreams. The right partner will support those dreams. We all have idealistic and realistic views and choices. If you look at your situation realistically, he’s made it obvious, he’s not ready to grow up and commit. In marriage, do you want to have a partner or raise an adultchild? Are you willing to give up the wonderful life you’re creating here for what may be an illusion? Thoughts to ponder, your choice.

If shorter days and colder temperatures cause you to feel the winter blues, you’re not alone. It’s not uncommon to experience sadness, fatigue, loss of interest in usual activities, difficulty concentrating and a disruption in your sleep pattern during the winter season.
For some, this mood change is short-lived and easily managed with lifestyle adjustments. But, for others, the winter blues can turn into a more severe type of depression called seasonal affective disorder or SAD (more on this later). Regardless of the severity, there are things you can do to help conquer the winter blues.
Keep Up Your Sleep Routine
Sleep has a major effect on mood. Without adequate, regular sleep, our circadian rhythm can get disrupted, which also disrupts cortisol rhythms and impacts hormone production. To improve your sleep:
• Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
• Follow a regular bedtime routine that signifies rest, such as brushing teeth, reading, turning down the lights, taking a bath or drinking a cup of herbal tea. Whatever helps you feel most relaxed.
• Expose yourself to light as soon as you wake up.
Boost Your Mood with Food
One way to help improve your mood is to make healthy food choices. For example, eating protein with your meals can enhance mood and prevent sugar and carb cravings later in the day.
Including foods high in vitamin D such as fish, and vitamin D fortified foods like milk, orange juice, breakfast cereal and yogurt can help balance your mood.
You might also want to talk to your doctor about taking a Vitamin D supplement, especially during the winter months.
Staying active has been shown to boost mood and decrease the symptoms of depression and stress. Try to work up to 30 to 60 minutes a day of an activity you enjoy.
Seek Out the Sun
Getting outside daily, even for a few minutes a day, can make a huge impact on your mood and help target the specific symptoms of SAD related to a lack of daylight.
Being in the sunlight helps balance serotonin activity, increases melatonin production, balances your circadian rhythm and increases vitamin D levels, which can lead to an improved emotional state.
If you cannot get outdoors, move a chair, workstation or kitchen table next to a window that gets sunlight. Aim to sit in this location for at least one to two hours a day.
Loneliness and isolation tend to make the effects of the winter blues worse. That’s why your support system, which may include family, friends, neighbors and co-workers should be on speed dial. Finding a way to spend time with supportive people is key to boosting your mood. This may include walks outdoors, talking on the phone or virtual dates.
If lifestyle modifications and other basic self-care interventions do not provide enough relief from the winter blues, you may be dealing with a more serious case of the seasonal depression known as SAD, and it may be time to consider seeking professional help. Psychotherapy is highly recommended to treat depressive disorders and would likely benefit any individual suffering from SAD.
Unlike the winter blues, SAD affects your daily life, including how you feel and think. Fortunately, treatment can help you get through this challenging time. Treatments include light therapy, talk therapy and antidepressants.
Since the 1980s, light therapy has been a mainstay for treating winterpattern SAD. It aims to expose people with SAD to a bright light to make up for the diminished natural sunlight in darker months.
For this treatment, the person sits in front of a very bright light box (10,000 lux) every day for about 30−45 minutes, usually first thing in the morning, from fall to spring. The light box, which is about 20 times brighter than ordinary indoor light, filters out the potentially damaging UV light, making this a safe treatment for most.

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in West Jefferson, NC is a gem in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, offering a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs and nature lovers alike. From its rich history and breathtaking views to its diverse wildlife and unique features, the park provides an exceptional opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the region. Whether you’re hiking to the summit, enjoying a peaceful picnic or capturing the stunning vistas on camera, Mount Jefferson is a destination that will leave you with unforgettable memories. Make sure to visit this incredible natural area, and immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of one of North Carolina’s most scenic spots.
Mount Jefferson’s history is deeply intertwined with the preservation of the area’s natural resources. The land was first set aside as a state park in the 1950s to protect its unique ecosystem and to provide public access to its scenic vistas. Over the years, the park has become an important site for both conservation and recreation. The mountain itself is named for Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, due to his appreciation of the natural world.
This natural area is located in Ashe County, NC and is part of the larger Appalachian Range, an area known for its rugged terrain, diverse plant and animal life, and rich cultural history. The mountain’s highest peak reaches over 4,000 feet, offering visitors unparalleled views of the surrounding valleys and ridges.
Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of activities for people of all ages and fitness levels. Here are some of the most popular activities you can enjoy:
The park features several well maintained trails that cater to different skill levels. The Mountain Ridge Trail is a moderate to strenuous hike that leads to the summit of Mount Jefferson, where hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains that offers vistas as far as Tennessee from its overlooks and Luther Rock. For those seeking a shorter, more relaxed hike, the Spur Trail provides stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a perfect choice for families or casual hikers.
Mount Jefferson is home to a diverse range of wildlife, making it a fantastic spot for birdwatching and animal observation. Look out for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and a variety of bird species, including hawks and songbirds. The area is also a great place for butterfly watchers, especially during the summer months when various species of butterflies take to the wildflower fields.
There are designated picnic areas within the park, providing a perfect spot for a meal surrounded by nature. These areas are equipped with tables and grills, making them ideal for a relaxing afternoon with family or friends. Enjoy a leisurely lunch while taking in the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery.
The park offers incredible opportunities for photographers to capture breathtaking landscapes, wildlife and plant life. Whether you’re snapping shots of the vibrant fall foliage or the snowy winter wonderland, Mount Jefferson provides some of the most picturesque views in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Mount Jefferson is known for its striking natural features, which make it a unique destination for outdoor lovers. Some of its most notable characteristics include:
One of the highlights of the park is its rocky outcrops and ridgetops, which offer sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The summit of Mount Jefferson provides a 360-degree panorama of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the valleys below, making it one of the most stunning viewpoints in North Carolina. The park’s winding road to the summit hosts an annual downhill skateboarding event that is a huge draw to the area due to its altitude and sharp curves.
The park is home to a variety of plant species, including unique alpine and mountain plants. More than 700 plants call the park home, including the Dutchman’s pipevine, which is visited by the beautiful swallowtail butterfly and its distinct black-and-orange-spiked caterpillar. The area’s ecological diversity is a result of its varied elevation and climate which supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The unique high altitude ecosystem is one of the key reasons Mount Jefferson was designated as a state natural area, helping to protect its fragile environment.
The area around Mount Jefferson has long been inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Cherokee. The Blue Ridge Mountains were considered sacred land, and today, the natural area helps preserve this rich cultural history while offering visitors a chance to experience the land’s beauty and significance.
As the sun sets over the mountain, Mount Jefferson offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. Whether you’re taking in the colors of the sunset from a rocky outcrop or enjoying a quiet moment in the park’s picnic area, there’s something magical about the way the landscape transforms at dusk. The cool mountain air and quiet surroundings make for an ideal end to a day of hiking, photography or simply relaxing in nature.
We all have choices when it comes to food, especially snacks, and yet, the pull towards a choice that is less than healthy typically wins. While the desire to eat better is a need, the “want” tends to be in control. The choice of chips or candy may satisfy a craving; yet, it will not boost healthy skin and good health. In fact, research suggests a diet which includes processed or refined sugars will promote aging and damaged skin. Nutritious foods can taste fantastic! Use the suggestions below to help boost your health while continuing to snack.
Apples: Full of vitamin E, calcium, fiber, and a powerful source of antioxidants, this wonderful snack helps stop oxidation throughout the body and fosters cell functioning. The apple also keeps bones and muscles healthy, and the high magnesium content can lower your stress levels. A great snack, apple slices with a shake of lemon juice will eliminate discoloration.
Avocados: Packed with vitamins C, E, and K, which are vital to skin health, individuals who ate avocados proved to be much healthier than those who did not. As a great source to boost energy levels, researchers revealed avocado enthusiasts weighed less and consumed more fruit and vegetables. One great recipe is:
In a bowl, combine one chopped tomato, a few basil leaves, and a sprinkling of mozzarella shavings. Add salt and pepper and a drizzle of olive oil.
Spoon mixture into the avocado halves and drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Delicious!
Olive Oil: In addition to having vitamin E and K, extra-virgin olive oil contains antioxidants and is rich in healthy, monounsaturated fats.
Tomatoes: A powerful antioxidant, lycopene, is found in tomatoes, which helps the brain, and prevents damage to cells known to cause dementia.
Blueberries: One of the most delicious hearthealthy foods is blue. Rich in antioxidants and fiber, blueberries have the superpower to promote youthful skin, protect against sun damage, and boost memory. With each serving, this berry aids in the feeling of fullness and discourages the need to seek another snack. A second great combination is blueberries and strawberries! (Don’t forget to bring a fork and a napkin!)
Carrots: Rich in vitamin A, carrots are also responsible for cell growth, including boosting hair follicle growth.
Dark Chocolate: Health does not preclude chocolate; yet, containing 90% cocoa, dark chocolate is full of antioxidants and quite low on the glycemic index. As a sweetly nutritious treat,
it has the power to boost phenyl ethylamine levels and promote happiness.
Oats: While eating oatmeal for breakfast is nutritious, oats promote weight loss, lower blood sugar levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition to a great source of carbs, fiber, and important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, consider a creative snack featuring oats baked in muffins or granola bars.
Pumpkin Seeds: Fall, especially, is a great time to suggest pumpkin seeds as a healthy and vital snack for enhancing memory and thinking skills. It also contains magnesium to ease stress levels, and tryptophan promoting a good mood. Nutrition on the go, pumpkin seeds can be kept in a snack bag and easily transported in a purse, bag, or pocket.
Walnuts: An amazing superfood rich in antioxidants and heart-healthy, omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts are also high in protein and fiber to control cravings. Among its list of benefits, this particular nut features selenium to slow the aging process and promote circulation.
Preparation of a nutritious snack, whether in a sandwich bag or small container, can make a substantial difference in your focus and mood. Isn’t it nice to know many of your favorite foods can sustain the body, promote clarity and focus, boost heart health and weight loss, as well as give the skin a healthy glow? The options are indeed inspiring!

When you think of NASCAR or talk NASCAR with other fans, there are a few names that always come up because of their impact on the sport. Petty reigns at the top of that list. In the 2024 season, the Petty family celebrated 75 years in NASCAR. Lee Petty, a NASCAR pioneer raced in the first NASCAR Strictly Stock Series race in 1949, going on to accomplish numerous successes over the course of his career including becoming a 3x Grand National Series (previously Strictly Stock Series, now known as the Cup Series) champion. Lee’s son, Richard Petty, referred to as “The King” is the winningest NASCAR driver to this day with accomplishments that include seven championships and 200 wins, among many others. Richard’s son, Kyle Petty, and grandson, Adam Petty, who has since passed away due to an accident on the track, also had many successes in NASCAR. Kyle Petty continues to be involved in the sport as a racing analyst for TV partner NBC.
During the NASCAR 2024 season LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, the Petty family and race tracks around the country came together
to celebrate the Petty family’s 75th anniversary of being in NASCAR. Special art installations featuring Petty’s renowned cowboy hat, the feathered Charlie 1 Horse, can be found at 24 different race tracks, as well as at the Richard Petty Museum, NASCAR Hall of Fame and LEGACY M.C. Each location designed their own unique version of The King’s Hat to honor the Petty family. They are handcrafted by Tivoli Too Inc., measure six feet tall and five feet wide, weigh 950 pounds and are made of fiberglass and concrete. They are permanent installations and can be reskinned in years to come. Aside from serving as permanent tributes to the Petty family, they are landmarks for the fans to admire and use as a photo opportunity.
I had a conversation with Kyle Petty to talk more about the Petty 75 Campaign that ran all of last year as each hat was revealed throughout the race season.
“It was special,” Petty stated regarding how it felt for his family to be honored for accomplishing such a huge milestone. He added, “It was a huge honor to see my grandfather recognized again, my father recognized, myself and Adam.” The Daytona 500 that took place last February was the first hat reveal of the season. Kyle Petty, alongside his dad and cousins, Timmy, Mark and Ritchie, served as the grand marshals for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), where his grandfather won the inaugural Daytona 500 and where his father won his 200th race. Petty said, “There were moments like that all year long. It was surreal.”
Petty was very involved in the Petty 75 Campaign from start to finish but shared that
many people did so much to help make it the success it was. He went on to say, “LEGACY MOTOR CLUB stepped up and did so much for us with the hat program which was phenomenal.” He and The King attended the hat reveals throughout the season, met with fans for pictures and signed autographs. Petty shared that his dad enjoyed it very much. Laughing, he said, “Dad started strong, but during the summer months, he waned a little bit on me, but he ended strong,” adding “You know, he’s 87 years old.” Petty, his father and more than 40 members of the Petty family got to serve as grand marshals at Martinsville Speedway ahead of the second to last race of the ’24 NASCAR Cup Series season.
I asked Petty if he had a personal favorite of The King’s Hat sculptures. He said, “Everyone did what they were supposed to do. They tied the family to each one in their own way, and each one has different aspects.” He shared the one at DIS is special since it holds so many race career highlights for the Petty family mentioning how Russell Branham “drove the bus” on that one. After thinking it over, Petty said, “If I had to say one, I’d say the one at our museum because we picked all the photos for that one.”
“Everyone with the last name Petty who ever touched a car in any way, shape or form is on that hat, so I guess that’d be my favorite.”
We know the past 75 going on 76 years of Petty’s impact on the sport, but what does the future hold for them in NASCAR? Richard Petty serves as Ambassador for LEGACY M.C. driving more than an hour each way, once a week with his retired crew chief and fellow Hall of Famer, Dale Inman, to visit the shop and shake hands with each employee. He attends many races and makes sponsor appearances. Petty said, “and I still sit in front of the TV camera and run my mouth on Sundays, so who knows?” He went on to say that being a family from rural North Carolina, they know a lot of farmers, and many of those third and fourth generation farms are going strong. He said, “Our family farm grew race cars, and we’re still in business. As long as there are race cars, our family will be involved.”
Speaking of cars, I couldn’t let the interview pass without noting the iconic race cars that have come out of the Petty Garage and asking him which one is his dream car. He answered immediately after the question left my mouth saying, “The ’70 Superbird, the winged car, the one in the movie, Cars. That’s gotta be it. Nothing says NASCAR, nothing says Daytona, nothing says racing or Petty like that Superbird.” Just this last year, he was able to ship it to England and drive it in the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Petty said that when he started the car, “the crowd went crazy.”
The Petty family has had such a lasting impact and many successes in NASCAR, so I wondered what the biggest legacy is that he hopes he and his family will leave behind. Petty shared about Victory Junction, a NASCAR-themed camp created for children who are battling medical conditions and serious illnesses to visit and experience the joys of childhood amidst whatever they’re battling. The camp was inspired by a dream his late son, Adam, had. Petty stated, “It’s not our camp. It’s the kids’. A tragedy happened in our life, and we raised our hands and stepped up, but it’s not ours.”
To answer the question, Petty said, “I would say that I hope our legacy is that we are remembered as caretakers. Caretakers of the sport and caretakers of kids.”
The 2024 NASCAR season has ended, and the 2025 one will soon begin, marking the 76th year of the Petty family’s involvement in the sport. If you make it out to a race this season, be sure to grab a photo next to The King’s Hat or visit LEGACY M.C., the NASCAR Hall of Fame or the Richard Petty Museum to admire their versions of The King’s Hat.

Whether your Valentine’s Day plans involve date night with your sweetheart, a girls’ night with popcorn and champagne or any other combination you can dream up, now is the time to queue up a romantic movie or two on your streaming service. Here, we’ve selected eight of our favorite true love films which tackle the grand subject of love in thoughtful and enticing ways. As different as these films are, they all remind us that no matter the circumstances, love will prevail.
(1989)
Lloyd (John Cusack), an underachieving, kickboxing romantic, pursues cerebral beauty Diane (Ione Skye) as they both graduate from high school. The unlikely pair fumble through their discovery that they may just be perfect for each other. If a shameless display of affection does not equal a man blaring Peter Gabriel “In Your Eyes” on his boombox outside our window, then I don’t want it. This quirky love story is one for the ages.
Love is never simple in a Jane Austen narrative. In Pride & Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is a man in love with Elizabeth Bennet – but has a hard time making that known. In this adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) lives with her mother, father and sisters in the English countryside. As the eldest, she faces increasing pressure from her parents to marry. When introduced to the handsome and noble Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), sparks fly. Although there is obvious chemistry between the two, Darcy’s overly reserved nature jeopardizes the new relationship.
Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga join forces to play real-life couple Richard and Mildred Loving in this film about an interracial couple whose marriage would be the catalyst for invalidating laws prohibiting interracial marriage as their case is taken all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967. While the film does focus on the lawsuit, their faithful, defiant love is the heart of this story.
MOONSTRUCK (1987)
Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage) is the onehanded baker in love with his brother’s fiancée. Loretta (Cher) won a Best Actress Oscar for her role as the Italian American widow who accepts a marriage proposal from her bore of a
boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), only to find herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny. She tries her best to resist, but Ronny blames his brother for the loss of his hand and pursues Loretta relentlessly while Johnny is out of the country. That’s amore!
UP (2009)
In this Pixar film, Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old grumpy balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. Carl’s worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell has hitched a ride aboard the balloon-powered house. Adventures abound in this story about how far one would go for love.
(1995)
Emma Thompson wrote and starred in Sense and Sensibility. The film tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they navigate their way through 19th-century relationship issues involving Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman), Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant) and John Willoughby (Greg Wise).
Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) is traveling in Italy with her prudish aunt, Charlotte (Maggie Smith). Both disappointed at not getting the room with a view they had been promised, they are hesitant to accept the offer of Mr. Emerson (Denholm Elliot) and his son George (Julian Sands), staying at the same inn, to switch rooms so they may have a view after all. They do graciously agree. George is from the start an intriguing romantic interest for Lucy. Lucy does her best to resist her attraction to George. Let yourself be carried away with the beautiful scenery and this incredibly romantic love story.
What would a list of love stories be without The Notebook? Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams star as couple Noah and Allie, who begin a tumultuous relationship in the 1940s before the two are separated by her family and then World War II, though that’s far from the end of their love story. The older versions of their characters are played to a full-on weeping effect by James Garner and Gena Rowlands. “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”
