Publisher Perspective HAPPY APRIL, HAPPY SPRING, AND HAPPY EASTER!

TThis month, we’re embracing all things happy. And goodness knows, we have a lot to be joyful about—early spring topping my personal list! There’s nothing quite like blooming trees, vibrant flowers, and the freshest, greenest grass to lift the spirits.

March brought sunshine and incredible events, including our 4th annual Women on the Move Conference (WOMC) in Winston-Salem at the stunning Legacy Stables and Events. Watching my daughter and her amazing team pour months of dedication into this event has been inspiring. It was a gathering to remember, filled with empowerment, connection, and purpose.

Here in Lake Norman, we’re gearing up for our 3rd annual Boutique Crawl—an event close to our hearts. You can find all the details and how to sign up on page 56. We promise an unforgettable day with an exciting pregame hosted by Symphony Park Luxury Living and NeoGenix Stem Cell and Regenerative Therapies. Expect exclusive savings at every store, laughter and fellowship with your friends, and prizes all day long. We can’t wait to see you there!

Art Speak MANNY A. MALDONADO

This month, we are delighted to feature the art of

How would you describe your work?

I use acrylic paints to fuse together the styles of impressionism and sketching. My brush strokes are bold and loose while my sketching is free flowing and intricate. I use a vibrant palette and a playful interplay of colors to evoke the everchanging mood of nature. Each brush stroke and each sketch capture a fleeting moment, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the dynamic beauty of the landscapes I paint.

My end goal is to create a visual experience that transports the viewer into the heart of these scenes.

What sets me apart as an artist is my freedom and refusal to conform. As an impressionist, I specialize in landscapes, animals and buildings, but I always paint what I want, the way I want. I don’t stick to traditional rules or expectations – I use whatever colors feel right to me at the moment.

Even though my paintings are beautiful, there’s a sense of rebellion beneath the surface. I’m not afraid to break the rules and push boundaries because that’s where my creativity thrives. My art is a reflection of who I am: bold, unconventional and unapologetically true.

Which other artists inspire you?

Artists that have inspired me include Banksy, Carol Marine, Jeff Weir, Mike Yoshiaki Daikubara, Ten Hundred, Detour 303, Monet and Jed Dorsey.

Where do you find your best sources for inspiration?

I find solace in pursuing outdoor activities. Fly fishing, camping and hiking have become an integral part of my life, allowing me to connect with nature’s wonders. These adventures are even more special when shared with my wife and our two dogs, Dodger and Remy.

What is the greatest compliment you’ve received about your work?

It’s when someone feels an emotional connection to my work. It can be hearing that the painting evokes a memory, inspires someone or makes them see the world differently.

What are you working on now that you are excited about?

I teach an online landscape painting course called PAINT WITH FREEDOM. I invite all to check it out at paintwithfreedon.com.

I’m also excited about creating quality over quantity and entering in as many Plein Air events as I can this year. I’m also working on a western series that includes landscapes and wildlife. Eight of my paintings are heading to Jackson Hole in August.

What is one piece of creative advice you wish you had learned earlier?

Some days are filled with doubt – wondering if you’ll ever succeed or if your art stands out in such a competitive field. Rejections and slow progress can be discouraging, and making a living from your work often feels like an uphill battle.

It’s so important to have people in your corner. Surround yourself with friends, mentors or fellow artists who believe in you, even on days when you don’t believe in yourself. Their support can help you push through the tough times and keep going.

The journey isn’t easy, but the struggle is part of what makes growth and success so rewarding. Focus on your own progress, trust your process and don’t let comparisons hold you back.

Marzano Capital Group The Value of Financial Advice

There’s growing evidence of the value that financial advisors bring to the table, beyond investment management. This concept, often referred to as “Advisor Alpha,” has been championed by Vanguard and does a great job illustrating the many hats a financial advisor wears.

Our goal for you, whether you’re our client or not, is to get the most from your relationship with a financial advisor. A strong relationship with a holistic focus is a great starting point for making the right financial decisions. Let’s delve into a few key Advisor Alpha concepts:

1. Personalized Financial Planning

At the heart of Advisor Alpha lies personalized financial planning. A comprehensive approach that encompasses your financial goals, risk tolerance, and life circumstances can make a substantial difference in your financial outcome. This goes beyond generic investment recommendations, addressing specific needs such as retirement planning, tax efficiency, and estate planning.

2. Behavioral Coaching

One of the most critical aspects of Advisor Alpha is behavioral coaching. Financial markets can be volatile, and emotional reactions can lead to decisions that negatively impact long-term investment success. Advisors play a crucial role in helping clients navigate these turbulent times, providing the emotional support and customized guidance needed to stick to their long-term financial plans. This helps prevent costly mistakes like panic selling, which can derail financial goals.

3. Tax Efficiency

Tax implications can significantly affect your investment returns. Skilled financial advisors can create tax-efficient investment strategies that minimize tax liabilities and maximize after-tax returns. This involves strategic asset location, tax-loss harvesting, and understanding the tax implications of various investment vehicles. By optimizing for taxes, advisors can add significant value, enhancing your overall investment portfolio’s efficiency.

4. Cost-Effective Implementation

Costs matter, and minimizing investment costs is a straightforward way to improve net returns. Financial advisors can identify costeffective investment vehicles, negotiate lower fee structures, and employ strategies to reduce transaction costs. This cost-conscious approach ensures that more of your money remains invested and compounding over time, contributing to greater wealth accumulation.

5. Estate Planning and Wealth Transfer

Advisors can help ensure that your legacy aligns with your values and objectives, developing strategies to efficiently transfer wealth to heirs or charitable organizations. This

includes navigating tax implications, setting up trusts, and coordinating with legal professionals to create a comprehensive estate plan.

The value of financial advice extends far beyond picking stocks or timing the market. Advisor Alpha encompasses a holistic approach to financial planning, offering personalized advice, behavioral coaching, tax efficiency, cost-effective implementation, and estate planning.

By leveraging the expertise of a skilled financial advisor, you can navigate the complexities of personal finance more effectively. In the journey toward financial security, having a knowledgeable guide by your side can make all the difference.

Rock Barn’s Jackson Course A MUST-PLAY FOR GOLF PURISTS

For those who appreciate a well-designed golf course that values precision over raw power, Rock Barn Country Club & Spa’s Jackson Course is an essential stop. Designed by Tom Jackson, this North Carolina gem has earned national recognition, recently being ranked No. 3 in the country by GolfPass for its layout. That ranking isn’t from industry insiders—it comes from the golfers themselves, making it an honor that speaks volumes.

Jackson proves that a great course doesn’t need excessive length to be challenging. Rolling fairways, undulating greens, and a mix of risk-reward holes keep players engaged from the first tee to the 18th

green. Tipping out at just over 6,427 yards, it forces players to think their way around rather than rely on distance alone. Jackson’s design incorporates rolling fairways, well-protected greens, and risk-reward opportunities that demand both strategy and execution.

The course starts out with a par-5 that leans left—tempting players with an uphill bold line off the tee and hazards strategically placed as you near the green. Meanwhile, the par-3 6th requires pinpoint accuracy, proving that length is no substitute for skill. The par 5 10th offers a challenging approach to the green, surrounded by water. Each hole presents a fresh challenge, making this course as engaging as it is scenic.

But Rock Barn is more than just golf. The resort’s European Spa is a destination in itself, offering a full suite of pampering packages designed for ultimate relaxation and recovery. The highlight is its hydrotherapy circuit, a rejuvenating experience that includes a cold-water plunge, soothing grottos, and a therapeutic mineral pool—all designed to relax muscles, boost circulation, and promote overall well-being. Whether unwinding after a round or indulging in a full spa day, the experience is second to none.

Pair all of this with on-site lodging, dining and world-class hospitality, and Rock Barn isn’t just a great place to play—it’s a place to stay. For those looking to experience one of the nation’s top public course layouts while enjoying resort-level luxury, the Jackson Course at Rock Barn delivers in every way that matters. Dynamis Estate Wines

Sharing the Journey from Soil to Soul

AAn easy drive from Charlotte and the Lake Norman area, Dynamis Estate Wines is a true luxury experience blending Old World techniques with modern technology.

The beautiful setting speaks for itself, perched at an elevation of 1,640 feet above sea level, the highest in this vineyard-specific region. This is where climate ripens the grapes slowly and evenly, to produce authentic perfection. The altitude provides cooler nights and a longer growing season, allowing the grapes to develop complexity and balance, while the rocky terrain challenges the vines, leading to lower yields but more concentrated wines.

Within mere minutes of speaking with the Dynamis team of Sales & Marketing Manager Amanda Benoit, Vineyard Manager Joseph Geller and “The Winemaking Duo” of Katy Kidd and Matheson Worrell, you’ll feel the passion and expertise each brings to the table.

“What inspires us is the ability to create memorable experiences for our guests and wine club members,” explains Joseph. “We’re more than just a winery – we’re curating moments that

allow people to connect with our land, our wines and each other in meaningful ways.”

The passion of the Dynamis team is fueled by the estate’s stunning beauty which has been farmed for more than a century and the knowledge that each bottle reflects the essence of that history.

In 2019, winemaking duo Matheson and Katy launched Dynamis Estate Wines with a bold vision – to redefine the quality and experience of North Carolina wine. From their very first vintage, they crafted The Mountain – a Cabernet Sauvignonbased Bordeaux blend that set a new benchmark for the region. Their commitment to excellence didn’t stop with the wine, as they pioneered a luxury tasting experience, offering guided, seated tastings that were ahead of their time for North Carolina.

Dynamis officially opened its gates in the summer of 2022, introducing a new era of winemaking in the Blue Ridge foothills. With a relentless focus on quality and an uncompromising approach to craftsmanship, Matheson and Katy continue to shape Dynamis into a world class wine destination, elevating North Carolina’s place on the global wine map.

Continued on page 30.

Continued from page 29.

“At Dynamis Estate Wines, our commitment to excellence extends beyond winemaking – we are also setting a new standard for viticulture in North Carolina, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in this region,” says Joseph.

“Focused on Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, we farm with precision and intention, ensuring each grape reaches its full potential,” shares Katy. “The Mountain’s rocky soils and rolling hills are the foundation of the vineyard, providing excellent drainage and sun exposure that enhance fruit ripening. These natural elements create the ideal conditions for our wines to develop deep complexity, bold structure and refined balance, allowing us to craft wines that rival the best.”

“Whether it’s guiding someone through a tasting in our vineyards or hosting a private event with Blue Ridge Mountain views, we’re inspired to bring out the best in what we offer,” adds Joseph. “If choosing one word to describe Dynamis, it would be powerful. From the bold, mountain-grown wines to the striking landscape, everything here leaves a lasting impression.”

The truly exceptional wines begin in the vineyard and are meticulously cultivated to ensure every bottle embodies the unique character of the terroir. From sustainable farming practices to precise harvest timing, the process is intentional.

“We follow a premium production model, aging all our wines in 100% new French oak to enhance complexity, structure and elegance,” shares Matheson. “With this dedication, we are elevating North Carolina wine one bottle at a time, crafting world class wines that showcase the potential of our region and create a sensory experience – one that connects people to the land, the moment and each other.”

Unique to Dynamis, winemakers Matheson and Katy’s partnership is truly a collaboration. This savvy winemaking duo is the heart and soul of the winery, with a shared vision that’s behind the brand’s success.

“Working side by side, Matheson and I have transformed Dynamis into a standout on the North Carolina wine scene, where every bottle tells a story of passion, precision and artistry,” shares Katy.

The Dynamis approach to hospitality is as distinctive as its quality blends. “We don’t have a traditional wine bar – instead, we offer

Geller

immersive tastings that provide a deeper understanding of our wines and the land that shapes them,” says Joseph. “Every moment here is crafted with intention whether it’s a weekday tasting or a Wine Club event.”

Of course, the most luxurious way to enjoy the specialties at Dynamis Estate Wines is

Joseph
– Vineyard and Orchard Manager
Katy Kidd and Matheson Worrell –

by becoming a Wine Club Member. There’s no cost to join, but membership requires a one-year commitment and four club orders per year each season (winter, spring, summer and fall). Dynamis offers a three-bottle club (wines are chosen by the winemakers and usually include two reds and one white), and a six bottle “custom” club which allows you to customize your order. Club members receive $20 off Estate Tastings (retail $55, club price $35), $20 off Tours (retail $85, club price $65), and two complimentary tickets to each pickup party in February, May, August and November (a $400 value for all parties).

“For our Wine Club members, inspiration comes from the relationships we build. It’s about offering exclusive access to wines and experiences that make them feel truly part of our family. Crafting the ‘Dynamis Experience’ is about giving people something unforgettable every time they visit,“ says Joseph.

While taking in the breathtaking Blue Ridge views, Wine Club members enjoy premium wines, expertly catered cuisine and live music at exclusive gatherings. Beyond the festivities, they are treated to intimate presentations by Joseph, Katy and Matheson, who share insights into the vineyard and winery, offering a behind-the-scenes look at each vintage, current releases and exciting new wines on the horizon.

“Members can always pick up their wines at the quarterly parties, but if they can’t make the party, they can pick up at the lodge,” explains Amanda. “If they miss a party, we offer a complimentary tasting with bread and olive oil plate, so they don’t miss out on their club benefits. We can also ship wines if they can’t be picked up.”

The Tasting Lodge is open Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Reservations for members or the general public are recommended but not required. The lodge is for guests 21 and over with no pets allowed. The Dynamis Guided Bus and Walking Tour is open to the public – six or more people are required for tours, and times can be requested Thursday through Sunday.

Alex a Mano Jewelry Inspired By Nature and The Human Connection

Alex a Mano – “Alex by Hand” – couldn’t be a more appropriate company name for an artist who truly loves connecting with her materials.

Alex Sulikowski tells us she’s especially fond of metal and how it transforms with fire, softening, bending and taking shape under her hands.

“I also love my tools – especially ones used by other jewelers before me. I think about the hands that held them, the stories they created and I feel part of something bigger,” she shares.

Alex moved to the United States in 2000, but carries her varied cultural background with her – like “layers of a story that continue to unfold.”

“My Croatian and Polish roots instill in me a deep connection to craftsmanship and resilience – both of which are woven into how I approach my work,” she explains.

“My Argentine upbringing, filled with color, warmth and a strong sense of community, has given me a love for nature and handmade traditions. These influences are reflected

in my metalsmithing – there’s an Old World quality in my approach, a respect for traditional techniques and a passion for storytelling through jewelry. But, beyond the craft itself, my pieces are more than just adornment, as they celebrate connection, memory and personal history. My heritage has shaped how I see and value those moments, and I pour that feeling into every piece I create.”

Even during her years as an educator, her hands were never still – whether she was arranging a space or working on a creative project.

“I loved teaching, but discovered when I was creating, time seemed to disappear. Hours would pass in deep focus, my hands assembling and transforming any material that came my way,” she adds.

The moment that truly brought it all together occurred during a trip back to Argentina, when she reconnected with her childhood best friend.

“We reminisced about the tiny jewelry kiosk her family owned when we were young – and how we spent hours dreaming about having our own treasure-filled boutique. That conversation unearthed something in me, reigniting a long-buried passion. Inspired, I taught myself the art of beading and, before I knew it, took a leap of faith and opened my own jewelry store in Boston, while still

working a fulltime job,” Alex shares. While running the shop for nine years, one thing became clear – she felt most alive there, creating, bringing ideas to life and sharing something meaningful with customers. It was then that she understood – art wasn’t just something she loved; it was the path she was meant to follow.

With a mix of perfect timing and new possibilities aligning, Alex and her husband, Don, moved to Charlotte in 2017.

“It was the fresh start we didn’t even know we were looking for – a blend of creativity, nature and a fast-growing community. It quickly became home, a place where we could build our life together and, for me, fully embrace my passion for metalsmithing.”

A vintage tool lover, Alex discovered Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts by chance while visiting a favorite antique mall in Mooresville. While exploring downtown, she was immediately drawn to the gallery’s beautifully curated selection.

“Each piece felt intentional, elevated and full of character – exactly the kind of space I aspire to be part of!” Alex shares. “Meeting Jacque was serendipitous, as she instantly reminded me of my days as a shop owner. She has an incredible eye for artistry and a deep passion for supporting makers. I felt an instant connection and was also captivated by the sign outside her gallery: “Enter Curious, Depart Delighted.” It perfectly embodies not only the spirit of Juelerye but also the way Jacque connects with people, making them feel welcome and part of something special. I’m grateful to have my work in a space that values craftsmanship and community as much as I do.”

Alex finds inspiration in all connections – to nature, to materials and to the people who wear her jewelry. She finds fulfillment in knowing her work can bring someone joy, boost confidence or serve as a tangible reminder of something meaningful in their life. While every piece holds a story, there are a few that feel especially close to her heart. One is “The Broocket” – a brooch/locket she designed as a tribute to her parents and her own journey.

“It represents gratitude, heritage and belonging, and it’s deeply personal. It’s one of the few pieces I kept for myself. But, in truth, my favorite piece is often the one I’m about to make – the excitement of bringing something new to life never fades!”

Visit alexamano.com for more information, or reach Alex at 781.504.5705. Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts is located in Mooresville at 112 S. Main Street, 704.728.0460, and at juelerye.com.

A SOUTHERN GARDEN

For the Lazy (or Busy!) Gardener

April is a great time to get out there and get your hands in the dirt! It’s the ideal time to plant because the frosty mornings have usually gone, and it’s a month or two before it becomes scorching hot. If you’re anything like me, a truly lazy gardener, the best plants to plant are those that do not need a ton of upkeep and tend to thrive in the southern sun all on their own.

For beds located in full sun or full afternoon sun, there are a few trees and flowering plants that will grow into a beautiful array of colors without being high maintenance. Many of these you will also spot along the highways of North Carolina. Just think, no one is babying these plants after they have been planted, right? We don’t see teams of state workers along the highways every year watering, trimming, and cleaning up the planted beds. They thrive on their own and for the lazy (or too busy, if that sounds better in your mind) gardener, those are the plants we need.

Daylilies are a fantastic choice. They come in all sorts of colors ranging from deep burgundy to the peachiest of peaches –something for every person’s color palette. They can be tall or short in stature so there’s room to layer them and still have plenty of variation. They have enough greenery to spread around so they are a great choice when you have space to fill up.

Daylilies are perennials, so they keep coming back and providing a punch of color year after year. They

take on full summer sun and do well with the watering time that mother nature provides. They are hardy enough to be split up after a few years of maturing, so they make a great plant to pass on to family and friends. I have daylilies that are over 60 years old from generations passed down.

Crepe Myrtle trees or shrubs are also sun loving, low maintenance plants that offer color and height variety. The trees are often shaped prior to purchase so there’s little trimming that’s required up front. However, to keep a Crepe Myrtle small and ornamental, it will require some trimming once it reaches the desired size. If you have a large open space, these trees can grow very large over time if you let them, spanning fifteen feet wide and twenty-five feet high. Too often these poor ornamental trees will go through something I call crepe murder! That’s when you see one that has been trimmed too much and it’s just a sad trunk – that isn’t necessary to keep them small. An annual trimming and cutting back to the size you prefer will be enough to keep your tree at a desired size; no need to hack all the limbs down to the base. Dwarf Crepe Myrtles will only grow to a height of four feet and semi-dwarf can grow to a height of eight feet. Depending on what you need and where, there is a Crepe Myrtle that will probably suit your needs. They come in white, pinks, reds and purples which may be why they get the nickname “lilac of the south.” Once they are established, they are quite drought tolerant, making them an excellent choice for those on the lazy, or busy, side when it comes to yard work.

The Iris family is another very hardy, sun loving flower that will be an easy addition to any garden. These are not full of foliage, they are more upright in stature and don’t require a large amount of space, so they can be a nice filler, but their flowers are impactful, and they have plenty of variations (hundreds!) to keep things interesting when planted in large groupings! Irises are tuberous, which means they can also be divided and moved easily. They do not require a ton of water to survive the summer, so let Mother Nature take care of the watering.

Sedum plants, which can either be flowering or simply pretty foliage, are an easy growing, drought resistant plant. There are hundreds of these in the genus so a standout for me is the Mr. Goodbud or Stonecrop variation. They are tall, ranging from twelve to twenty-four inches in height and they have massive flower heads that span up to six inches wide. These plants have extremely strong stems, so even with their expansive burst of color, they aren’t going to flop over like the dreamy, pillowy, peony does. The Mr. Goodbud is a vibrant pink bud that bursts open to a purple pink. Sedums are ideal for any full sun garden and even potted plants that you do not want to have to fret over.

If you aren’t keen on yardwork or watering plants for hours, you don’t have to give up the idea of having some bold and beautiful colors around this summer!

Living Life Accent Prone FROM WEEKEND RETREAT TO DREAM HOME:

A STUNNING LAKE HOUSE TRANSFORMATION

There’s nothing we love more than taking a client’s vision and watching every detail fall into place – especially when it’s a beautiful home right here at the lake!

For nearly a decade, this particular design client’s home was just a weekend getaway –but then the couple retired to Lake Norman full time. Their décor had worked well for short stays, but it felt dated and, as they explained, lacked the functionality they needed and wanted for their everyday lifestyle.

I immediately knew we wanted to create a casual modern vibe! We all agreed we wanted the outside setting – the lake, of course – to

be the star, which meant not incorporating any overwhelming colors or bold prints inside.

Our clients’ initial inspiration for the space actually began during a visit to our new store in Huntersville, where they couldn’t take their eyes off a pair of stunning Rothko chairs in a beautiful shade of butterscotch. The combination of beauty and comfort sealed the deal for the chairs, launching the dream of transforming their breakfast nook into a combined game room and dining area. Avid gamers, the couple had a wonderful dining table that seated eight but wasn’t the right fit for their current gaming nights that only required cozy seating for four. So, finding the perfect sized table that blended with those amazing chairs was next on the list!

As we all know, it’s human nature that, once you update one space, you start to see how much those adjoining rooms need a refresh! So, we moved to the living room next, where our clients completely fell in love with an incredible Four Hands sofa. While it looks like a classic, stylish couch, all three seats recline, creating the perfect blend of comfort and function for their living space. I also love that its clean lines look so modern.

But, my favorite piece in the living room is the oversized marble coffee table – it is absolutely gorgeous, with a super thick marble top and modern wood base. My favorite design style has always been rustic modern, where we mix raw woods with modern lines. I think we accomplished

that here at the lake, using lots of linen, raw woods, marble, leather and pretty natural textures.

Now, for what turned out to be everyone’s favorite finishing touch – the gallery wall! Incorporating family photos always makes a space feel more personal – but sometimes it feels like overkill with lots of little frames sitting around. We love organizing them in a clean, seamless gallery wall which modernizes the look, and creating the gallery in timeless black and white, versus noncohesive colors, makes it feel more like art!

This happy project ended with clients who are pleased beyond words! They had a vision of what they really wanted all along – and loved it once they found all the elements. It just took a touch of our expertise and encouragement to pull everything together! Until next time, Cheri

If we don’t have the perfect pieces for your vision –either in Huntersville or at our Kernersville location – we’ll help you find them!

THINGS WEDDING GUESTS THINK BUT WON’T SAY

Weddings are beautiful celebrations of love, but as a guest, there are often unspoken thoughts. While couples plan their big day with the best of intentions, here are some common things wedding guests might be thinking, but won’t openly express.

Recent social media posts about disgruntled wedding guests are numerous and include complaints like couples charging guests to attend or demanding expensive gifts. The idea of being appreciative for what you get or the old saying of “it’s the thought that counts” seem to have gone out the window. But, there are a few areas that are particularly sensitive to wedding guests.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS ARE EXPENSIVE

A wedding in a tropical paradise or a historic European city sounds magical and romantic, but for guests, it often means spending a small fortune. Flights, hotels and time off work add up quickly. If you’re having a destination wedding, be mindful that some guests may have to decline due to financial constraints.

A CASH BAR SHOULD BE KNOWN AHEAD OF TIME

Guests love an open bar, but if you’re having a cash bar, let people know in advance so they can come prepared. No one likes the awkward moment of realizing they don’t have cash on hand when it is time to order a drink.

LONG GAPS BETWEEN THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION ARE FRUSTRATING

A long wait between the wedding ceremony and the reception can be a buzzkill. Guests may find themselves with hours to kill, often in an unfamiliar area. If a long gap is unavoidable, consider providing refreshments or a suggested activity nearby to keep guests entertained.

KEEP THE VOWS SHORT AND SWEET

Your love story is beautiful, but lengthy vows can test the patience of even the most devoted guests. Keep vows heartfelt yet concise – your guests will appreciate it.

OUTDOOR WEDDINGS WITHOUT SHADE ARE BRUTAL

Sunburn, overheating and sweating through formal attire are real concerns. If your wedding is outdoors, consider providing shaded areas, fans or even cold refreshments to keep guests comfortable.

VAGUE DRESS CODES LEAD TO CONFUSION

“Dressy casual” or “festive formal” can be open to interpretation. Guests don’t want to show up over- or underdressed, so be specific about attire expectations. If in doubt, examples or photos can help guide your guests.

IF YOU SAY “NO KIDS,” DON’T MAKE EXCEPTIONS

When you specify “no children” on the invitation, but then allow some guests to bring their kids, others will notice – and they might not be happy about it. If you want a child-free event, be consistent with the rule you established.

RSVP ONLINE, PLEASE!

I for one, could keep Hallmark in business, because I love sending cards. Cards and letters are a throwback to an age when people took time to share their feelings, but in today’s fast-paced life, RSVPing online is the way to go. Mail-back RSVP cards are charming, but your guests might find them inconvenient, especially if you send the invite out and the RSVP gets misplaced before it is returned or gets lost in the mail.

A LONG FIRST DANCE CAN FEEL ENDLESS

Your first dance is a special moment, but if it drags on too long, guests may start shifting in their seats. Keep it to a reasonable length or invite others to join in after a short while.

IF GUESTS LEAVE EARLY, DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY

Not everyone can stay until the last dance. Some guests have long drives home, early work commitments or just get tired. It doesn’t mean they don’t love and support you – they just need to head out a bit earlier.

At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating your love, but keeping these guest considerations in mind will ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience for everyone!

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD…REST HARD

For years, our family has lived by the mantra: Work hard, play hard.

It’s an impactful mantra – one that has shaped our approach with our kids in school, sports and careers. Push yourself, grind toward your goals and then celebrate the wins. Hustle, then have fun. My daughter even referenced this mindset in her nursing school interview last week, reinforcing how deeply it has been ingrained in our way of life.

Admittedly, there’s something we missed. An essential element that is often overlooked in our culture of constant productivity and achievement.

Rest Hard

Not just take a break or get some sleep, but truly recharge – mentally, emotionally and physically.

In today’s world, there is a growing recognition of the importance of the pause. More and more, we see examples of rest being woven into high-performance lifestyles:

• The rest day from an intense workout, essential for muscle growth and injury prevention.

• Team-building activities that strengthen workplace relationships and increase engagement.

• Date nights with a spouse – not just for fun, but for deep connection and presence.

• Midday walks, offering fresh air and a mental reset to improve focus and creativity.

• A pitcher’s day off to allow recovery and avoid longterm damage.

Yet, despite these signs of progress, our culture still glorifies the hustle. Why do we continue to glorify sleepless nights and packed schedules? We equate exhaustion with dedication. We wear burnout like a badge of honor.

And, what does it cost us? Burnout, disengagement and stress-related illnesses that take a toll on our health, relationships and even our success.

How do we identify the impact of rest in our lives?

• In Business: The most successful entrepreneurs and executives don’t just work harder – they work smarter. And, part of working smart means knowing when to rest. Bill Gates takes weeklong “Think Weeks,” retreating from distractions to read, reflect and strategize. In reality, rested minds make better decisions. When you’re constantly running on fumes, creativity, problem solving and visionary thinking suffer.

• In Relationships: When was the last time you were too drained to engage in meaningful conversation? When we don’t rest, we don’t connect. Fatigue leads to short tempers, shallow interactions and emotional distance. Intentional rest – whether it’s carving out uninterrupted family time, stepping away from work emails or simply allowing space for solitude – replenishes our emotional reserves. The best relationships aren’t built on busyness; they thrive on presence and energy.

• In Team Building: The best teams don’t just push hard – they recover well. Companies that prioritize mental well being, flexible schedules and genuine recovery time have lower turnover and higher engagement. When employees are encouraged to step back and recharge, they return more focused, creative and productive. A well-rested team is an innovative team.

Be the change! Work hard, play hard…and normalize resting hard.

I still believe in hard work. I still believe in playing hard. But, I also believe just as strongly in resting hard. It’s not laziness; it’s strategy. It’s not weakness; it’s wisdom.

If we want to thrive in our careers, relationships and personal growth, we must break the cycle of glorified exhaustion. Let’s normalize the pause, value recovery and embrace the truth that rest is not a reward, it’s a requirement.

Your body, your mind and your success depend on it.

FACE OR EMBRACE THE DAY?

Just the other day, my lovely neighbor and I were chatting over the fence when she said:

“You look so nice. Heading out somewhere?”

“Me? No, nothing planned.”

“Well, you look great.”

“Thanks. It’s just me being me, I guess.”

She smiled...because she “gets” me.

It was sweet of her and in her nature to extend genuine compliments, but this time, it caused me to look at myself and ask “How, exactly, was this ‘me being me?’”

Well, for one thing, I was wearing a pair of short but dangly earrings which I recall picking up at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I guess they shimmered amidst my faux blond hair. Plus, instead of my Tuesdaytypical, neutral-leaning gray, black, white or cream casual top, this one was chartreuse – one of my favorite colors. Other than that, a dash of lip gloss. But, for puttering around the house on a “typical Tuesday,” I guess I was a smidgeon upgraded.

And, with that came the realization that there are days that I face and days that I embrace. It’s an attitude – a primary orientation rooted in the idea that the 24 hours ahead are either something to get through or something that I welcome with positive intentions and expectations.

EMBRACE THE DAY AHEAD WITH A HUG

Earlier this year, during the contemplative and planful month of January, I challenged myself to embrace every one of the 365 days ahead. On the surface, that sounds “praiseworthy.” But, it’s no small feat when the challenges and rough spots in life come with that 24-hour package. That’s when hugging the day ahead matters the most, when a prayer of supplication or a moment of gratitude gifts me with the strength I need to make whatever’s ahead more bearable.

EMBRACE THE DAY: MAKE IT A HABIT!

There are so many ways to embrace your day. Only you know what will get you on track to experience a joyful unfolding of your 24 hours. I want

to emphasize that this intentional approach isn’t reserved for the idle or the retired. When I was showing up at an office every day, I made a point of embracing that time and that space by bringing in a bouquet for my desk on Monday, arguably the hardest of workdays. I also took a 10- or 15-minute walk outside as part of my workday, whenever possible. And, at least once a month, I treated myself to breakfast at a local diner (very much a New England thing) before heading to the office. In these ways and more, I embraced my workdays, and in the process, reminded myself that I was and am the She-Captain of my experience.

That said, this notion of embrace isn’t exactly a cultural norm. We Americans are known for our results-focused, goal-driven orientation. I am that way as well. At the same time, we can soften the edges by embracing each day. Here are a few ideas for you to consider or reconsider:

CENTERING

Meditation and Prayer

Yoga and Movement

Morning Mantra or Journaling

CONNECTING WITH NATURE

Sit outside for a few minutes

Walk your neighborhood

Feed the birds

INTRODUCING SIMPLE PLEASURES

Take yourself to breakfast

Buy flowers for your desk

Wear that bright lipstick

GENERATING JOY FOR OTHERS

Find “their good”

Smile from your heart

Celebrate their small wins

Put words to your kind thoughts

There is one more thing: Be a model for others by setting the example for embracing each day. It matters. I once had a boss who liked to start the day by doing a mini juggling routine in his office – you know, colorful balls and batons and such. That not only put a smile on the face of the staff, it also set the tone for a great work day ahead.

Gray Divorce UNDERSTANDING THE GROWING TREND AMONG OLDER ADULTS

Divorce is often associated with younger couples, but in recent years, an increasing number of older adults are choosing to part ways. This phenomenon, known as “gray divorce,” refers to the divorce of couples aged 50 and older. While divorce rates among younger generations have generally declined, the divorce rate among those in their 50s, 60s and beyond has risen sharply. In fact, according to research from the National Center for Family & Marriage Research, the divorce rate for individuals aged 50 and older has roughly doubled since the 1990s.

So, why are more and more older couples divorcing?

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO GRAY DIVORCE

Longer Life Expectancy – As people live longer, the prospect of spending decades in a marriage that no longer fulfills them becomes a reality. When couples in their 50s or 60s feel that they’ve outgrown their relationship or have different life goals, they may be more willing to call it quits. Individuals may have more years ahead of them to pursue their own happiness, especially if they no longer feel connected to their spouse.

Changing Social Norms – Divorce has become more socially acceptable, and the stigma once associated with ending a marriage has

diminished. For many older adults, divorce no longer represents failure; rather, it may be seen as a new beginning. As society’s views on divorce have evolved, people are less likely to stay in unhappy marriages out of a sense of obligation or societal pressure.

Empty Nest Syndrome – Many couples find themselves reevaluating their relationships once their children have left home. With the “parenting” phase of their lives over, they may feel they have little in common with their spouse or that they’ve drifted apart over the years. This phase of life, often referred to as the “empty nest” phase, can be a time of reflection, and some couples decide to part ways after realizing they’ve outgrown their relationship.

The Rise of Individualism – Modern society increasingly values personal fulfillment, and older adults may feel that they deserve a better quality of life in their later years. For some, this means pursuing new passions, hobbies or relationships that are more in alignment with their current desires. A growing emphasis on self care and self actualization has led many to reevaluate their marriages and seek out happiness outside of them.

THE IMPACT OF GRAY DIVORCE

Emotional and Psychological Effects – Gray divorce can have significant emotional and psychological effects. For many older individuals, the end of a long-term marriage

can bring feelings of loss, loneliness and uncertainty. Older adults may also experience challenges in redefining their identity after decades of being a part of a couple. The emotional toll can be compounded by concerns about the future, such as navigating retirement or managing health issues alone.

Financial Strain – Financial considerations are a major concern in gray divorces. After decades of accumulating assets together, dividing them can be complex and emotionally charged. Many older adults find that their retirement savings, pensions and other assets need to be split, which can leave both parties with less financial security. In some cases, one partner may need to return to the workforce or delay retirement in order to make ends meet.

Impact on Children and Extended Family –

While adult children may not experience the same upheaval as younger children, gray divorce can still have emotional consequences for them. Many adult children feel a sense of loss when their parents divorce, particularly if they’ve been married for a long time. Additionally, grandchildren may find themselves caught in the middle of family dynamics, which can create tension and confusion.

Opportunities for Growth – Despite the challenges, gray divorce can offer opportunities for personal growth and transformation. Many individuals who go through a gray divorce find that it gives them the chance to explore new interests, build new social networks and even start new romantic relationships. For some, the end of a marriage opens doors to new experiences that might have been impossible while still in the relationship.

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF MARRIAGE

Gray divorce is part of a broader shift in societal attitudes toward marriage and relationships. As life expectancy increases, and as older adults prioritize their own well being and happiness, divorce among older couples is likely to continue to rise. However, it’s essential to note that while gray divorce can be difficult, it’s also reflective of changing expectations about marriage and personal fulfillment. Couples are no longer staying together out of obligation or societal pressure; they are choosing to live authentic, meaningful lives, even if it means ending a marriage that has spanned many years. As more individuals in their 50s, 60s and beyond seek new paths for the second half of their lives, gray divorce will likely continue to play a significant role in shaping modern relationships.

Stop Overcomplicating Things! Keep Your Goals Simple, Clear and Achievable: Success with Smart Goals

As the first quarter of the year comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect and plan ahead. The beginning of a new year often comes with resolutions, fresh goals and new strategies!

You wonder, how long does it last? Studies show nearly 92% of people will not follow through on a resolution. As I dug deeper, I found out there is actually a concept called “Quitter’s Day.” Right, I was thinking the same thing...and guess what? It’s actually the second Friday in January! Yes, just two weeks.

I believe it’s because, as time passes, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of everyday life, drop the plan and forget to reassess. Here’s why planning at the end of the first quarter is crucial and how you can set yourself up for success in the upcoming months using SMART goals.

Review Your Goals and Progress

By the end of March, you’ve likely made significant strides toward your New Year’s goals – or perhaps, you’ve encountered obstacles. Some may have even quit! Don’t quit. This is your chance to assess where you stand and adjust if necessary.

1.Stop and revisit your goals.

Revisit the objectives you set at the start of the year. Are they still relevant? Have your priorities shifted? Sometimes, after a few months, our initial goals might need tweaking to better align with current circumstances or changing priorities. Don’t be afraid to adjust your goals to reflect what’s most important right now!

2. Assess your progress.

Have you achieved the milestones you set for yourself? If not, what barriers did you face? Analyze what’s worked well and what hasn’t, so you can course correct.

3. Monitor key metrics. Whether in business, personal finance, fitness or other areas, track your progress toward your goals. These measurements help identify trends and pinpoint areas where improvement is needed.

Set SMART Goals for Q2

One of the best ways to set yourself up for success in the next quarter is to define SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound objectives. SMART goals give you clarity and focus, helping you stay on track and achieve more. Here’s how you can apply SMART goals:

1. Specific

Be clear and precise about what you want to achieve.

2. Measurable

Your goal should have quantifiable criteria.

3. Achievable

Set goals that are challenging yet realistic. If your goal is too ambitious, you might lose motivation. Be sure your target is something you can reasonably accomplish within the set timeframe.

4. Relevant

Ensure your goal aligns with your broader objectives and long-term vision. Ask yourself, “Will this goal move me closer to my larger purpose?”

5. Time-bound

Set deadlines for your goals. A clear timeframe creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused.

Setting SMART goals for Q2 will help you break down your larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks, making progress easier to track and measure. Remember, the key is not to overcomplicate things. Keep your goals simple, clear and achievable so you can stay motivated and make steady progress toward success.

Using the 5 Love Languages with Family

The Bible tells us love is the greatest (1 Corinthians 13:13), and it is the foundation of every healthy relationship. Dr. Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages introduced the idea that people interpret and feel love in different ways. The book turned into a phenomenon in recent years and helped many people learn more about their significant others. While the book focuses on romantic relationships, love languages can transform family dynamics by helping us understand how to love our parents, siblings, children and even close friends.

The five love languages – Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch – remind us that love is a choice, and learning to speak someone else’s love language can strengthen bonds and respect. As a reminder, here are the five love languages:

1. Words of Affirmation: Expressing love through compliments, encouragement and kind words.

2. Acts of Service: Showing love by doing things that make someone’s life easier, like chores or errands.

3. Receiving Gifts: Communicating love with thoughtful presents that show care and intentionality.

4. Quality Time: Spending undistracted, focused time with someone.

5. Physical Touch: Conveying sensory love through hugs, kisses, caresses on the back or holding hands.

When applied to family life, these languages can help us better understand how each member feels appreciated and connected. The first step is to get everyone to take a free quiz to discover theirs and share with the family. Once, you’ve done that, here are ways to use them in your family:

1. Words of Affirmation: Building Each Other Up

Your kind words can change someone’s entire day. Oddly enough, the longer we’re around those we truly love, the easier it is to neglect kindness and uplifting affirmations. Compliment your child on their effort in school, sports or help around the house. Tell your sibling how much you admire their creativity. Leave sticky notes with uplifting messages on the bathroom mirror or in a lunchbox. These words remind family members that they are seen and valued.

2.

Acts of Service: Love in Action

For some people, actions speak louder than words, and those who identify with that will resonate deeply with this love language. If a family member ranks high with this love language, there’s nothing wrong with asking what types of actions they’d like to see. And, when they tell you, do it any chance you get. Help your parents by preparing dinner without being asked. Offer to help a sibling with a project with which they’re struggling. Even small gestures, like tidying up the living room or fixing something around the house, will show you care.

3. Receiving Gifts: The Thought That Counts

Some people enjoy receiving tangible expressions of love. Usually, it doesn’t have to be extravagant, just thoughtful. Giving gifts to loved ones who value this love language can make them feel appreciated because you took the time to find something they enjoy. Encourage family members to exchange small, heartfelt gifts on special occasions or just because.

4. Quality Time: Fostering Connection

In busy and ever changing family dynamics, undistracted time together is priceless. For those who simply want to see their family and friends, be sure to set aside time to gather. Family game nights, intimate nature walks or one-on-one “dates” with each family member will mean so much to those who value this love language. The goal is to give your full attention and create cherishable memories that can only happen when you’re together.

5. Physical Touch: Comfort and Reassurance

Virginia Satir, a world renowned family therapist, is famous for saying, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Friends and family who value physical touch can benefit from a warm hug, a playful nudge in times of laughter or holding hands during a tough moment. Physical touch can be especially important for young children or teens going through the highs and lows of life. Of course, respect the personal boundaries of each family member or friend, but don’t underestimate the power of touch to heal and connect.

Families can create an environment of mutual respect and understanding by learning and practicing each other’s love languages. It’s not about perfection but about being intentional with your love. Take time to discover what makes each family member feel cherished – you’ll not only strengthen relationships but also build a legacy of love that lasts for generations.

919 Backyard BBQ SMASHBURGERS

This month, I wanted to share a spring/ summer classic that is very quick and easy and sure to be a hit – smashburgers. They are super quick to make, so flavorful and you can make them at home on a pan or griddle for a fraction of the cost of a Five Guys, Smashburger, Shake Shack, etc.

These are great when cooking for a crowd with a limited amount of time to cook and, also, it only takes around 6-8 minutes total. You only need a few ingredients, but you can obviously tweak it to your liking and add anything on them! I love using the Snake River Farms American Wagyu ground beef from Harris Teeter for this – it’s only about $10 and so so good!

Ingredients (to serve two double smashburgers or four single burgers):

• 1 pound ground beef (80/20, American wagyu, whatever you like.)

• Hamburger buns (or eat it on a lettuce bun if you’re watching carbs) – I prefer brioche

• 4 slices of preferred cheese

• Cooking oil

• Seasoning of choice (I always use a salt, pepper and garlic seasoning – Meat Church Holy Cow is my favorite for a burger)

• Any other burger toppings you desire (I like adding a slice of bacon, some hatch chiles, butter lettuce and tomato)

Instructions:

1. Heat your griddle (or cooking pan) to medium/medium-high heat.

2. Unpackage your ground beef and roll it into four evenly sized balls.

3. Once the cooking surface is hot, place the meat onto the surface and then place a piece of parchment paper on top, and press down on the meat with a burger press (or spatula, whatever works). Make sure you smash it all the way down to get it very thin and evenly thick.

4. Season the (smashed) burger patty.

5. Let cook for 3-4 minutes.

6. Flip the burger and immediately top with cheese. At this step, if you’re using a griddle/blackstone and have the space to toast buns, you can butter them up and toast your buns while the cheese melts, or you can just toast them in the oven.

7. Let cook for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.

8. Pull them off, place on the buns and add the rest of your favorite burger toppings!

One Man’s Perspective DO YOU BELIEVE?

John 3:16 -18 in the New International Version of the Bible says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

This is interesting but it raises so many questions. What is the bible anyway? Just another book? Why trust it? It sounds like someone’s opinion.

I remember as a small boy my parents would take me to the country for our summer vacation. We lived in Brooklyn, and they felt it was important to get away. I would love it, and we would normally go to a small farm and eat plenty of eggs, fresh milk, and lots of fresh vegetables. It was special when I could lie in the grass and look up at the night sky filled with thousands of stars. I often pondered where they all came from and wondered about the order of them. I wanted to know more about them.

As I grew, I learned to love physics and the world that we live in. I learned much about math, the stars, electricity, weather, wind, water, gravity, pressure and so much more. And I learned that math could describe just about everything. Not only describe it but predict it. I love this world that we live in and as I thought about it, I love the creation of this world. The Big Bang is often described as being caused by electrons or particles interacting in some way. Yet they also say that outside of the earth there exists a complete vacuum – no electrons, no particles, nothing at all. To me, this suggests that the origin of everything wasn’t random but intentional, as though God spoke it into existence. And God in this view is the ultimate master mathematician.

The dictionary describes an accident as an undesirable or unfortunate happening which results in harm, injury, or damage. Our world is not an accident, it is in many cases predictable. You can predict the tides, you can predict the location of the stars, you can measure the rotation of the earth, and so on. Celestial navigation depends upon your knowledge of the stars and their location to get your latitude and longitude. Our world is not an accident. And I think I have always believed in God because of what I see around me.

The Bible is an amazing document it was started around 1500 BC and originally written in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. It’s been a bestseller for as long as I can remember. When we were in Israel I saw a copy of Isaiah from the Dead Sea Scrolls and it was compared with today’s version of Isaiah. It is almost the same. The Bible consists of 66 books written by 40 different authors. 2 Timothy 3:16 says “All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteous.”

But this did not make me a Christian. I had problems with the concept of Jesus being the son of God. I read and re-read the Bible and couldn’t understand most of it. I read lots of books where they would talk about God wooing you like a special courter. I read a number of books by C. S. Lewis; and then I read “More Than a Carpenter” by Josh McDowell. “This book talked about the Prophets and all the predictions they made, (over 300) where Jesus is the only one who could fulfill all of them.

Where are you in this story? Did you accept Jesus as a child? Are you fortunate enough to have been raised in a Christian family? Or are you full of questions? The questions are good! The Bible has the answers.

Is God wooing you?

Dear

I’m a 36-year-old woman who is struggling with the behavior of my in-laws, particularly my mother-in-law. She is the most self-centered, self-serving, negative and manipulative person I’ve ever met, and that’s a kind description. My husband continues to enable her behavior by constantly making excuses for her and living in denial. Her husband just walks out of the room or shuts down when she chooses to misbehave. She is constantly berating me, my parenting skills and my relationship with her son who’s afraid to stand up to her. His justification, “That’s my mom, it’s just who she is,” or he just ignores the behavior and doesn’t say anything to her.

He doesn’t want to rock the boat because I believe he’s afraid of her. My husband continually tells me to ignore her and not take it personally, and that she’s always said that no woman would ever be good enough for him or his brother. Easier said than done; I take it very personally because the things she says to me in front of my husband are horrible, and even worse when we’re alone. We’re happy in our marriage and have no other major issues. Her son and I have two children together, a four-year-old boy and a daughter who just turned one. She hardly interacts with them and refuses to hold the baby. It’s obvious she prefers her grandson over her granddaughter, definitely favors boys. Whenever we have a party, and both of our parents are invited, I can count on mine to come early and help, however, it’s not the same with my husband’s parents. They’re constantly making promises they can’t keep and blaming us at times for inconveniencing them by not planning our family events around their schedule. Again, my husband will make excuses and apologize to them. As much as it hurts sometimes, I’ve become somewhat numb to her negativity, harsh words and poor behavior. However, the excuses and enabling from my husband are becoming more challenging, and I’m having difficulty holding my tongue. I feel he’s choosing his parents over his family, his mom over me. I’m losing respect and starting to resent him. Am I wrong to feel this way? I don’t want to become a nag, however, I don’t want it to negatively affect our relationship and push us apart which is the direction it’s currently going. Please advise.

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Sharon,

Family issues can be extremely challenging, however, they should never be hurtful. I don’t agree with the belief that some people embrace – when you marry a person, you marry their family. Ideally, we want to believe that we’ll be accepted by our spouse’s family with open arms, hopefully liking and eventually learning to love each other. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. The question you need to ask yourself is, if you weren’t married to your husband, would you choose to have his mother in your life? One of the greatest things we possess is our free will, freedom of choice. We get to choose who we have in our lives. The older we get, the more we realize the importance of surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people. Your only obligation is to yourself and your family, not your husband’s family. It’s not only okay, it’s vital to separate yourself from those who are disrespectful and hurtful to you and especially to your children, even if they’re family. As I’ve said before, I believe relationships are about compromise, not sacrifice. More importantly, they’re about negotiation, and it sounds like it’s time for you and your husband to come to some sort of understanding in regard to his parents. Your husband will continue to make excuses for his mother as long as you’re afraid to call him out; it’s a coping mechanism that’s helped him deal

with her throughout his life. Denial is powerful. You have to be honest with him regarding your feelings and let him know that his lack of perceived caring and inability to stand up to his mother is threatening your marriage.

Don’t assume he knows how you feel, assumption is the mother of all screw-ups. Also, he may be subconsciously trying to protect his father who has to live with her and is probably too scared to leave. Guilt is powerful, and your husband may believe he abandoned his dad when he chose to marry you. Your best weapon is open and honest communication and getting your husband to agree on setting healthy boundaries with his parents. You need to be a united front in enforcing them, and his mom will be the biggest challenge. She’ll probably try to make your life difficult, however, you don’t need to kill the fire breathing dragon, you just need to put out her fire and render her helpless.

Trackside Talks RACE DAY IN THE A

It’s officially April, and I’ve decided to let you in on a little secret. If you’re reading this on the first day of the month then, no, I am not fooling you. If you haven’t heard, there is one track on the schedule this year that you should not and cannot miss. This race is for race fans and non-race fans alike, but if you don’t currently consider yourself a fan and attend this race, I’m positive you’ll leave with a different point of view. So the big secret…

Atlanta. Motor. Speedway. Have you heard? It’s the hottest ticket you can buy this year. I can confirm because I was at the Ambetter Health 400 in February when Christopher Bell claimed the victory by finding himself in the right spot in a three-wide race to the finish against Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson. The race was intense and action-packed from the drop of the green flag with multiple cars wrecking, running three-wide much of the time, with tons of speed variations and maneuverability.

Many important folks in the sport had something to say about the speedway and, from what I’ve heard, it’s all positive.

The track was last reconfigured in time for the spring race of 2022 and, since then, as Corey LaJoie said on NASCAR’s Stacking Pennies Podcast, “It has aged like a fine wine.” His guest, Kyle Larson, added, “It is so fun.” Larson went on to share that for “pure entertainment value, it is tense” describing the track as a “good size being smaller, good corner radius with gaps and holes to fill and not a lot of grip.” If you combine all those elements, it’s no surprise the racing is top notch entertainment for both the drivers and the fans.

As AMS continues to add character, car handling becomes vital, putting so much of the race outcome back into the drivers’ hands. Bell’s winning crew chief, Adam Stevens, shared that with AMS being “a full mile smaller than Daytona, it allows things to happen really fast and there’s not a lot of places to hide.” YouTuber Eric Estepp seems to agree, sharing on his channel, Out of the Groove, AMS “balances the car, driver skill and luck perfectly – or as perfectly as any drafting, super-speedwaytype track can allow.” It’s a race where you’ll

see the best cars and best drivers able to race their way up to the front because there’s less gridlock and dependability on packing up with your teammates.

And, if those guys’ opinions aren’t enough to get you to purchase your ticket for the summer race, hear it straight from Dale Earnhardt Jr. who said on X, “Man this racetrack has something special. What these drivers are doing is so mentally tough,” later saying, “Fans, get your tickets for later this summer. It’s gonna be warmer and even more incredible. Saturday, June 28th.”

If the anticipation of the actual racing for some reason isn’t enough to lure you to the track in June, then let me tell you about the Fan Zone at AMS. I attended the race with my husband and 18-month-old son and had a blast. Anyone with kids out there knows a toddler needs to be kept busy to avoid meltdowns, and thanks to AMS’s Fan Zone, we conquered the weekend. The Fan Zone is free to all and located just outside of the grandstands. It is jam-packed with attractions and exhibits from partners of AMS. New this year was the Sea Lion Splash sea lion show which was awesome. There aren’t many animals cuter than sea lions in my opinion. Definitely a highlight! Returning favorites to the Fan Zone this year included Canine Stars and the Red Trouser Show, American Axes and a couple of different carnival rides. They have a food court with delicious food options, including Chipotle Mexican Grill’s mobile kitchen. There was an exhibit of historic race cars and even an opportunity to practice your skill racing AMS in a simulator. On top of all of that, there were a handful of driver appearances through Saturday and Sunday, including meet and greets with both Richard Petty and Michael Waltrip.

Have you bought your ticket yet? Make a weekend of it! Gather your best pals or bring the family. See you this summer at the AMS Quaker State 400 under the lights at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28th. Don’t miss it!

Full throttle, Clair

Joyful Journey RAVEN ROCK STATE PARK

This month, let’s take a journey to a North Carolina treasure that blends history, nature and adventure – Raven Rock State Park. With more than 4,800 acres of breathtaking scenery along the Cape Fear River, it’s a paradise for outdoor adventurers, history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. From its deep historical roots to its aweinspiring geological features, Raven Rock has earned its place as one of the state’s most cherished natural wonders.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY

Raven Rock State Park isn’t just a beautiful outdoor escape; it’s also a living piece of history. The park’s story began long before it officially opened its gates in 1969. The area, originally home to the Siouan and Tuscarora peoples, was a hub of indigenous culture. While walking the park’s trails, you can still find artifacts from these early inhabitants, a quiet testament to the rich history embedded in the land.

The park’s name comes from Raven Rock, a towering 150-foot cliff that looms majestically over the Cape Fear River. This cliff has stood the test of time, watching over the land as it evolved from a secret gem to a beloved state park. Today, Raven Rock offers visitors a deep connection to both nature and the past, with interpretive programs and exhibits that help tell the story of the land and its people.

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Whether you’re an avid hiker, cyclist, angler or camper, Raven Rock State Park has something to satisfy your outdoor cravings.

Hiking: The park features a variety of scenic trails, each offering a different experience. The Raven Rock Loop Trail, a moderate 2.6-mile hike, leads you straight to the park’s namesake cliff with stunning panoramic views of the river below. If you’re looking for more exploration, the trails along the river bluffs lead you through lush forests adorned with wildflowers like mountain laurel and bring you to unique landmarks such as Lanier Rapids, Fish Traps Rapids and the remnants of the Northington Lock and Dam.

Fishing: The Cape Fear River is teeming with catfish, bass and sunfish, making it a prime spot for both seasoned anglers and beginners. Whether you’re casting off the shore or from a boat, the peaceful waters provide the perfect setting for a relaxing day of fishing.

Camping: Escape the hustle and bustle of modern life with a night under the stars at Raven Rock. Whether you’re pitching a tent in the woods or enjoying the comfort of a camper cabin, the park offers an authentic outdoor experience. The campground allows visitors to truly unwind and reconnect with nature, making it a perfect weekend getaway.

For those who prefer to saddle up, there are bridle trails for horseback riding, while cyclists can explore the park on dedicated bike trails.

NATURE’S MASTERPIECE

What truly sets Raven Rock State Park apart are its stunning geological features; the most iconic being Raven Rock itself. This massive crystalline structure, with its rugged beauty, serves as a reminder of the forces that shaped the landscape over millions of years. Along with the ancient hardwood forests and thriving ecosystems, the park provides a window into the geological history of the region.

One of the park’s most enchanting spots is Lanier Falls, where the Cape Fear River cascades over a series of rock ledges, creating a soothing, rhythmic rush of water. The falls are a peaceful place to pause, breathe and take in the natural beauty surrounding you. It’s the perfect spot for reflection or simply to let the wonders of nature wash over you.

WHY RAVEN ROCK MATTERS

Raven Rock State Park isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage. It’s a place where history, adventure and beauty come together to create an unforgettable experience. From the stories etched in its rocks to the vibrant life thriving along its trails, this park offers something for everyone – whether you’re in search of adventure, peace or a little bit of both.

The main access and visitor center for Raven Rock State Park is 3009 Raven Rock Road, Lillington, NC 27546, and the Moccasin Branch Access is located at 814 Moccasin Branch Road, Lillington, NC 27546. Park, visitor center and office hours vary by month. For more information, visit their website at ncparks.gov/state-parks/raven-rock-state-park or call 910.893.4888.

Balancing Breakfast For Your Family

Bacon, cinnamon rolls, sausage, muffins, pancakes, cereal, toast with jelly…do any of these make their way into your family’s breakfast routine throughout the week? Breakfast is great for sending your kids off to school with a full stomach and ready to learn, but if you’re not careful, some of these common breakfast foods can be high in fat, sugar and carbohydrates. Consistent consumption of these foods every morning can influence their health. Take cereal as an example. Most cereals marketed to children are high in sugar with very little fiber or protein. This means that your child will eat it and momentarily feel full, but what’s happening inside of their body is an increase in blood sugar that then rapidly decreases. Your child will be hungry again sooner, and they may not be able to pay attention for as long as they would have if their breakfast contained more filling nutrients. And, the same rule applies to us adults! Our breakfasts need to be high in nutrients, as well.

How do you provide breakfasts that will last longer and improve health? Pay attention to the number of food groups you and your family consume at breakfast, and look for foods that have fiber and protein. Fiber is a nutrient that is not absorbed and helps to lower blood sugar and fill us up. You can find fiber in fruits and vegetables as well as grain products, even some cereals! When looking at the food label, aim for at least three grams of fiber per serving of food. As you start looking at fiber on the nutrition label, you will notice the difference in quality of nutrients in some of your favorite cereals. Protein is also just as important as fiber. Protein is digested much slower than carbohydrates as it passes through our bodies which keeps us fuller longer and keeps our blood sugar stable. The average adult should be aiming for at least 100 grams of protein per day. If you eat three meals a day, that’s around 25-30 grams of protein at each meal (plus protein in your snacks) to get to 100 grams. That cereal you’re eating at breakfast probably has very little protein. You’ll get protein from the milk you put with your cereal, but you may also need to add boiled eggs or a side of nuts to help you increase your protein intake.

Here are some nutrient-dense breakfast ideas that your whole family can enjoy. Get your kids in the kitchen with you as you put some of these breakfast foods together. A few can be prepared ahead of time and then heated up in the morning. Others are quick enough to throw together before school and work! They include several food groups and can be higher in protein and fiber!

Breakfast Banana Split: lengthwise, topped with Greek yogurt and sprinkled with high fiber cereal. Add additional fruit on top, if you’d like!

Protein Pancakes: Use a pancake mix that is higher in protein and fiber. Top with blueberries and have scrambled eggs on the side.

Homemade Egg McMuffin:

One piece of Canadian bacon, a slice of cheese and scrambled egg whites placed inside of a toasted whole wheat English muffin. It’s a homemade version of a popular fast-food breakfast.

Muffin Quiches:

Scramble eggs and mix with vegetables of your choice, such as onions and broccoli. Add in a touch of milk and shredded cheese. Pour into sprayed or lined muffin tins and top with paprika. After baking, you’ve got mini quiches that can be reheated for breakfast throughout the week.

Parfait: Layers of flavored Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and high fiber cereal. This one is similar to a breakfast banana split, but the presentation is fun!

Aria’s Pride Sharing the Journey of Pediatric Cancer

As they reflect on their own personal journey with pediatric cancer, Rachael and Mike Ryan of Huntersville, NC most remember the support they received from friends and family during their young daughter’s courageous battle.

“Aria was diagnosed with infant acute megakaryoblastic leukemia on Thanksgiving Day of 2021, when she was five months old, and passed away at the age of 13 months in August of 2022,” shares Rachael. “She began chemotherapy treatment at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital immediately after diagnosis, and we stopped our own lives to be with Aria in the hospital.”

That’s when friends and family stepped in to make life even possible while Aria was receiving care, offering their time, love and unconditional support. Friends created a GoFundMe to lessen the stress of not working – in order to be with Aria – and also started meal trains when the family returned home from the hospital.

“We received gifts, cards and gift cards while in the hospital, so we knew we had strength in numbers behind us,” adds Rachael. “Friends helped take care of our dog when we had long days at the hospital, and we certainly knew how lucky we were to have this kind of support. That’s one of the things we want other families to experience – even if they don’t have the family and friend resources

nearby. Aria’s Pride wants you to feel supported and know you’re not alone!”

Rachael and Mike were inspired to carry on their young daughter’s memory and mirror her incredible strength.

“No family should face childhood cancer alone,” says Rachael. “We know firsthand that every family deserves a supportive community of compassionate and caring people. Aria faced every day with strength I never thought imaginable. For me, as her mother, I always want to know, why Aria? Why did we, as a family, have to endure this? My only explanation is that we are meant to do something with our experiences. Knowing how hard she fought through all her difficulties gives me strength in my daily life. She truly was inspiring, and I am so proud of her. I hope Aria’s Pride gives at least one other family a bit of inspiration and hope in their cancer journey.”

The Aria’s Pride team also provides Holiday Cheer Care Packages to families who spend time in the hospital during the holiday season.

“During Aria’s extended hospital stays, we spent many major holidays – and other life events – right there in the hospital. She was diagnosed on Thanksgiving, and we proceeded to spend her first Christmas and Easter in the hospital,” Rachael shares.

Holiday Cheer Care Packages include snacks, food delivery gift cards and gifts for

the patient, but also something for family members, siblings and caregivers. Rachael and Mike are hopeful these bring a bit of comfort while encouraging families to spend these precious moments together.

Even during her short, eight-month cancer battle, Aria had an impact on all those who knew her. In addition to the efforts of Aria’s

Pride to help families in similar situations with financial assistance and connections with counseling services, the Hemby Children’s Hospital is now home to “Aria’s Library” – a free library accessible to patients and caregivers being treated at the hospital. Located in the waiting room, the library contains new books for patients and gently used or new books for caregivers. Most are donated – there’s a wishlist on the website for those who want to purchase – and some organizations host book drives.

“Aria loved to read, and it was something we did every night before going to bed, including when we were in the hospital,” says Rachael. “We’ve gotten great feedback from hospital staff sharing how much patients enjoy picking out books.”

As strawberries were Aria’s favorite food, Aria’s Pride will host its Second Annual Strawberry Fundraiser at Sweet Grass Boutique in Mooresville, to be held this year on Tuesday, May 13th. Also, stay tuned for details on the Second Annual Aria’s Pride Pickle Ball Tournament in August at the Talbert Recreation Center in Mooresville –date to be announced soon!
