Publisher Perspective HELLO OCTOBER! Oh, how I have missed the cooler temperatures! After one of the hottest summers on record, or at least one that certainly felt like it, I am more than ready to welcome fall. There is just something about this time of year in Lake Norman that makes me want to slow down a little, get outside, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy everything our community has to offer. Speaking of enjoying our community, one of our favorite events of the year is just around the corner! LKN Magazine’s 2026 Shop Hop is happening Saturday, November 7th, from 10 AM to 4 PM throughout Huntersville, Cornelius and Mooresville. This year’s event is all about getting out, discovering some new favorite local businesses and, of course, doing a little shopping along the way. The Shop Hop is self-guided, so grab your best friend, make it a girls’ day, bring your family or simply spend the day exploring on your own. We have a great lineup of local boutiques, specialty shops and womenowned businesses, along with fun surprises, special offers and plenty of opportunities to get a jumpstart on your holiday shopping. And the best part? There is no cost to participate! We are so grateful to Fidelity Bank, our presenting sponsor, and to all of the local businesses opening their doors and welcoming you in. Events like this are a great reminder of just how many wonderful small businesses we have right here in our own PUBLISHER Keela Johnson Keela@lkn-magazine.com EDITOR | STRATEGY & GROWTH Brooke Culler Brooke@ForsythMags.com CONTENT EDITOR Meghan Corbett COVER PHOTOGRAPHY Carrie Allen CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS* Ingrid Russell Photography Carrie Allen Jodie Brim Creative M. backyard. Turn to page 24 for all the details, including this year’s participating stops. We hope to see you out there! This month, we are also thrilled to feature Meg Brown Home Furnishings on our cover. We have had the pleasure of working with Meg and her team through our Winston-Salem publications, Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family, and it is especially exciting to now welcome them to the Lake Norman community. Their eye for beautiful, collected spaces and their approach to making a house feel like home make them a wonderful addition to our local business community. Be sure to turn to page 28 to learn more about Meg & Davin Brown and their Lake Norman story.

excited. I’m hoping this is the year we have a little more to cheer about on Sundays! As always, I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it together. From local businesses and community events to the people and stories that make Lake Norman such a special place to call home, there is always something new to discover. Thank you for reading, supporting, sharing and, most importantly, shopping small and local. - KEELA JOHNSON, Publisher, LKN Magazine

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month that is especially meaningful to me as a two-time survivor, as well as the daughter of a survivor. I can’t wait for you to read the beautiful story on page 62, “Stronger Together,” about Pam Boileau and the Healing Dragons of Charlotte and their incredible journey to France for the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission Festival. It is a story of friendship, strength, loss, gratitude and, most importantly, making the most of the life we are given. And if you are overdue for your own mammogram, this is your sign to schedule one!! Now let’s dive into football season! As a #1 Carolina Panthers fan, I couldn’t be more

Welcome Home

MY KIND OF WEATHER By KEELA JOHNSON

T

here are people who live for summer, and then there are people like me who start breathing a little easier when October arrives. Don’t get me wrong. I love summer. I love the longer days, the boat rides and, most of all, the extra visits from family and friends. But after what felt like one of the hottest summers I can remember, I am more than ready for October. I’m a spring and fall girl. Give me cooler mornings, comfortable afternoons and evenings when you can actually sit outside without melting, and I’m a happy girl.

And that means our screened-in porch is about to become my happy place all over again. There is something about this time of year that makes me want to linger over coffee and a late breakfast. The doors are open, music is playing, and yes, my computer may be on my lap or within reaching distance when an idea hits me, or I suddenly remember something I need to add to my calendar. I am that entrepreneur — the one who loves everything about what I do, every single day. It’s not for everyone and certainly not for the

faint of heart, but it remains at the very top of my list of favorite things to do. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to say that. And then there are the walks. We all love to walk, and fall means we can finally do it whenever we want. Early morning walks are wonderful, but there is something pretty great about being able to head out in the middle of the afternoon or after dinner without feeling like you’re walking into a wall of heat. Cooler weather just makes you want to be outside. Those are my favorite days. They are even better when our kids are home. Thankfully, our family has gotten pretty good at turning a visit into a team effort. Tanner is definitely our lead chef, whether he’s grilling, smoking or creating the main dish. And Rae is his amazing sous chef, right there beside him and always ready to help. Tanner, Brooke and Rae tag team on the side dishes, and every once in a while, I’ll contribute a side dish or dessert. I’m usually happy to take care of the appetizers and drinks. Gavin, Brooke’s husband, has a very important role, too. He keeps all the dogs in line and

entertained, and he is also our best — and fastest — food runner. With the grill sitting underneath the screened-in porch, there are plenty of trips up and down the stairs, and someone has to make sure the food actually makes it to the table! And then there’s Teej, my husband. He is our clean-up crew and an amazing host. Somehow, he can have that kitchen back in order before we’ve even finished clearing the tables. Everyone has a job. We just seem to have figured out what works for us. Our parents love the porch just as much as we do. In fact, they loved ours so much that they added one to their own home, and now they spend more time on the porch each day than they do anywhere else. Add a little cornhole, a deck of cards, a game of Rummikub or Mexican Train, and we have everything we need for an afternoon that somehow turns into evening. And then there are those first really cool nights. That’s when we move toward the firepit, make s’mores, pull on a sweatshirt and settle in for more conversation. Of course, if Teej is around, there will also be music. Lots and lots of music. He seems to believe every gathering is better with a soundtrack! I feel like fall gives us permission to slow down. September’s Welcome Home was about opening your door and not being afraid to entertain. I think October is about what happens once everyone walks through it. You sit. You talk. You eat. You laugh. You play a game. Someone puts on music. The dogs eventually settle down. And before you know it, hours have passed. Nothing extraordinary happened. And yet, somehow, everything did. Because home isn’t really about the house. It’s about the people who fill it. So, this October, I’m opening the doors, turning off the air conditioning and making room on the porch. Come sit a while. There’s always room for one more. Welcome home.

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE STOCK MARKET DROPS By BRANDON JAMES, FINANCIAL ADVISOR

W

hen the stock market drops, the instinct is to act: sell before things get worse, sit in cash until conditions stabilize, and buy back in when the dust settles. It feels logical, but it almost never works out that way.

Over the years, we’ve seen this pattern repeat across a variety of investors. They might have had solid savings, a long runway to retirement, and the discipline to contribute consistently. But when things got volatile, they panicked. They sold late and only got back in after most of the gains had already passed.

IS A FINANCIAL ADVISOR WORTH IT? Most people evaluate a financial advisor on their portfolio recommendations, investment performance, or market insights. Those things matter, but they’re not where the return on a good advisor relationship tends to show up. The real value is when a client wants to act and their advisor gently reminds them to slow down and think through whether they should. In every significant downturn we’ve seen, the clients who came out whole were the ones who stayed calm and stuck to the plan. Knowing what to do when the stock

market drops, it turns out, isn’t really about doing anything. It’s about having someone who helps you hold to your plan when holding feels hardest.

Sources 1. DALBAR, Inc. (2025, March 31). Investors missed the best of 2024’s market gains, latest DALBAR Investor Behavior Report finds. PR Newswire. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ investors-missed-the-best-of-2024s-marketgains-latest-dalbar-investor-behavior-reportfinds-302416023.html

THE COST OF REACTING These patterns show up in the data, too. DALBAR has tracked the gap between market returns and what investors actually earn for decades. The numbers are consistent: investors who reacted to market conditions accumulated roughly 22% less total wealth over a 20-year period than those who simply held their position.1 The shortfall traces back to the moves made when markets got rough. WHY KNOWING BETTER ISN’T ENOUGH The investors in the DALBAR data who underperformed the market weren’t, on the whole, people who ignored financial fundamentals. Many of them knew the standard advice: stay the course and let the market recover. What they couldn’t overcome was the feeling, in a moment of genuine volatility, that doing nothing was the same as being reckless. A falling market generates more engagement than a stable one, and the gnawing sense that “this time it’s different” can be hard to ignore when your own savings are on the line. 80S AND 90S TRENDS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK By ELISA WALLACE COPPEDE

W

hile fashion trends always seem to repeat themselves, when it comes to the 80s and 90s trends showing up recently, fashion is not the only area affected. Interior décor as well as lifestyle changes are also pulling from these decades, led by the young Gen-Zers. The best thing about these new/old trends is that it is a true nod to a simpler time, where life just seemed to flow.

Life in both decades seemed to be so much easier than the decades after the dawn of the digital era. The 1980s, often dubbed the “Reagan Era,” was a time when everything seemed incredibly cheerful, and this reflected in the music, movies and fashion that accompanied this decade. Whereas the 1980s seemed to drip with peppy positivity, the 1990s, also known as the “Grunge Era,” was the yang to the 1980s ying. This decade was characterized by a spunkier and more edgy vibe of the Gen-Xers who were in their prime. Before we can discuss the lifestyle choices that are beginning to pop up across the nation from both decades, let us first focus on the fashion taking over faster than a “Saved by the Bell” episode. 80s/90s Fashion Trend #1: Bubble Skirts! Straight out of the movie Sixteen Candles, this fashion trend features a less poufy version of the popular bubble skirts and dresses worn to the prom by 1980s teens, including my own sister. The bubble skirts of 2026 offer a sleeker vibe, which helps make these skirts look more modern. These dresses and skirts, often paired with simple

26 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

flats and a sleek jacket, offer a fresh look. 80s/90s Fashion Trend #2: Handkerchief Tops and Dresses. This trend is something Nicole Kidman wore best and features a great look that draws attention to toned shoulders. Millennials may be the generation to wear this trend best, as Britney Spears also featured these tops in several of her videos from the early 2000s. 80s/90s Fashion Trend #3: Platform Wedges. The cult classic clothing catalog “Delia” would be thrilled to hear about this fashion trend making a reappearance! Platform sandals, wedges and even sneakers are making a huge comeback this summer. Chunky and easy-towear wedges were seen all over the runway during NY Fashion week and can be paired with slip dresses or oversized jeans, giving it an effortless and cool 90s feel. 80s/90s Home Trend #1: Burnished Metal. Home décor is also taking a cue from the vibe of the perky 1980s and chill 1990s. Anyone who has been to Target recently will see that the brass look of the 1980s is back in a big way. However, this variation has a more burnished, “grunge” vibe. The good news is, if you have any old brass lamps or furniture, you can still get use out to them. 80s/90s Home Trend #2: Geometric patterns. Full House would be proud to walk through the home furnishings catalogs of 2026, where geometric patterns are everywhere. The significant difference with these patterns, however, is that they are less primary colors like red and orange, and more pastel or muted colors, with vibrant borders and edges. Rather than wallpapering an entire room with

a loud geometric pattern, consider finding a few throw pillows featuring these patterns and livening up your living space. 80s/90s Home Trend #3: Country Chic. Today, this look is called “rustic” and features sturdy furniture and chairs. Several home furnishing stores feature baskets and farmhouse style dining sets for purchase. Mason jars, twine and natural fabrics are also making a big comeback, with the entire look being “handmade” and easy to replicate. 80s/90s Lifestyle Trend: Saying goodbye to social media. Spearheaded by Gen-Z, what is now “a quiet revolution” is happening. This group is leading an initiative to say “adios” to all the social media giants. According to the CNBC article, “A ‘quiet revolution’: Why young people are swapping social media for lunch dates, vinyl records and brick phones,” this movement has popularized as a protest in response to AI. “Account manager Matt Richards, 23, deleted all his social media apps from his phone last year and was surprised to find that his life changed for the better,” the article stated. Like most GenZers and Millennials, Richards grew up using smartphones and iPads. At the same time, follow @megbrownhome on Instagram to catch a delightful, down-to-earth glimpse of home as it should be – a place that’s full of love, laughter and always some surprises. You’ll find the real life home of Owners Meg and Davin Brown to be a shining example of blending quality furniture with the ongoing experience of creating a lifestyle. “Our own house has a revolving door,” Meg shares, with complete honesty. “Family, neighbors or

friends could easily walk in at any moment. I love to cook and love having a full table, so it is important for me to have lots of social spaces for friends to gather. When we designed our home, we chose livable styles and fabrics that could go from a kids’ movie night to an impromptu dinner party.” So, what does your life at home look like? Are you frequent party hosts? Are kids and pets the real center of attention at your house? When you turn to Meg, Davin and their entire design team, they more than understand the assignment! Combining her spirited interior design style and his savvy knowledge of the furniture industry has been a successful equation since the two opened the business in Bermuda Run, NC in 2006 – just around the time LKN Magazine’s sister publication, Forsyth Woman, was also launched! In 2020 came an onsite warehouse, outlet and a sleep shop, with an outdoor furniture patio added in 2024. By 2026, Meg Brown Home Furnishings was opening in Mooresville, NC – a logical choice as the Lake Norman community continues to grow. This new, discerning customer base has joyfully embraced the promise of quality furniture and superb design expertise while learning what makes this fun showroom so inviting. The brands Meg and Davin carry offer the finest craftsmanship and fabric choices, so whatever style you lean towards, there are endless options. “When thinking about design, we encourage our customers to choose pieces that will become part of their story for multiple phases of their lives – pieces that will last,” Meg explains. “For example, we have two boys, a dog and a cat. We offer lots of performance fabrics in the store, but for our own primary sitting area, we just went with a cotton stripe. We always break the rules and wash it, but if it’s dirty, we figure what do we have to lose? We say there are no bulletproof fabrics – some are just better than others; but any fabric or leather will need to be vacuumed, cleaned and fluffed regularly to keep it looking good.”

“When thinking about design, we encourage our customers to choose pieces that will become part of their story for multiple phases of their lives – pieces that will last.” -MEG BROWN, OWNER While the Mooresville location is decidedly smaller than the original Bermuda Run store, there’s an intentional focus here on the interior design side of the business. If the Meg Brown team is designing your space, you’ll immediately notice their attention turned towards what “real life” designs you want to accomplish. They specialize in creating custom plans that are tailored to the client’s specific style – and home measurements – before seeking out the best pieces of furniture to complement those dimensions. The Mooresville design team – that’s Leah, Bree and Melanie – do a wonderful job teaming up on projects – from a single room to an entire house. Meg Brown Home Furnishings has also completed multiple large-scale full home projects in Winston-Salem, Sea Island, GA, Linville, Blowing Rock, Charlotte, several coastal locations and, of course, the Lake Norman area. Since the new store’s opening last summer, the Lake Norman community has enthusiastically embraced Meg’s zest for life and affection for comfortable spaces that are meant to be loved, as well as the chance to access some of the best names in the industry: Sherrill

Furniture, Lee Industries, Vanguard Furniture, Hooker Furniture, Hancock & Moore, Woodbridge Furniture, Dash & Albert Rugs, Fibreworks Rugs, and Currey & Co. Lighting. (Side note: These are some of the very same brands Davin’s grandfather, Clyde Hendricks, sold back in 1966 at Hendricks Furniture in Mocksville, NC). Meg Brown Home Furnishings in Lake Norman features a wide variety of styles, fabrics and customization options, allowing clients to special order pieces that are tailored specifically to their personalities. FALL FUN AROUND LAKE NORMAN By JULIE PARRA

F

all is in full swing by the time October arrives around Lake Norman. From picking the perfect pumpkin and taking fall photos to attending local festivals, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the season.

Whether you’re planning a family outing, spending the day with friends, or looking for a festive date idea, October is the perfect time to explore some seasonal favorites close to home. VISIT YOUR LOCAL FARM A day trip to your local farm is the perfect way to enjoy a classic fall tradition. Starting on October 1st, Carrigan Farms in Mooresville brings back pumpkin picking, where visitors can take a tractor-drawn hayride out to the patch and choose a pumpkin right off the vine. Whether you’re searching for the perfect jacko’-lantern or picking out a few to decorate your front porch, the farm grows acres of pumpkins each year with plenty to choose from. Carrigan Farms also offers apple picking through part of October. Similar to pumpkin picking, visitors take a hayride out to the orchard to pick a half-peck bag of apples before making a stop at the petting zoo. Between the orchard, hayride, and pumpkin patch, it’s also a great opportunity to take photos and capture a few fall memories along the way. EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS October is one of the best times to spend more time outdoors as cooler temperatures and changing leaves bring a new look to the area. A local favorite is Lake Norman State Park in Troutman, where wooded trails and paths along the water make it a great place to spend a crisp fall morning or afternoon. Bring some friends, pack a picnic, and take some time to enjoy the seasonal views along the way. On the other side of the lake, Latta Nature Preserve in Huntersville offers another beautiful setting for a fall hike, with wooded trails and views of Mountain Island Lake. Whether you prefer a longer hike or an easy walk, October is a great time to lace up your shoes and enjoy the changing scenery close to home.

32 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

FAMILY FESTIVITIES October also brings plenty of festivals to enjoy with family and friends, starting with the Renaissance Festival in Huntersville. Beginning on October 3rd and returning every weekend through November 22nd, the festival transports visitors into a 16th-century-inspired village with costumed characters, live entertainment, artisan vendors, games, food, and live jousting. Whether you go for entertainment, shopping, or to try one of the famous turkey legs, it’s a great way to spend an entire afternoon. Another fall tradition that locals look forward to every year is Laketoberfest, returning October 10th to Bailey Road Park in Cornelius. The community festival features live music, food, local beer and wine, and plenty of activities for children, making it an easy outing for the whole family. With so much happening throughout the month, pick a few favorites and make a day of it. Search for the perfect pumpkin, take in the changing leaves along a local trail, or gather with friends and family at a festival. However you choose to spend October, there are plenty of ways to make the most of fall around Lake Norman.

ASK BETTY BEE As much as we love the change of seasons, there’s no denying a bit of pre-holiday stress always sneaks in! Bee Organized Lake Norman’s popular company mascot, Betty Bee, has some thoughtful advice for all that decorating – and un-decorating! Dear Betty Bee, Autumn has arrived and, suddenly, my calendar is filling up with Halloween parties; and I know Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here long before I’m ready! I love seeing decorations in my home, but the thought of pulling everything out, setting it all up and then putting it all away again feels overwhelming. Is there a way to enjoy this time of year by making that task a little less daunting?

BETTY BEE SAYS: There’s something magical about opening those holiday storage bins and seeing the treasured decorations you’ve loved for years. But getting everything out, untangling, dusting off and deciding where it all goes, plus – eventually – putting it all away? That’s another story! One thing I’ve learned is that seasonal decorating doesn’t have to happen all at once. You can make the process much easier by giving every step a little thought before you rush to get started. Take a moment to notice which decorations you actually enjoy using. If something is broken, if the lights no longer work or you find yourself putting the same decoration back into the bin year after year without using it, it may be time to let it go.

Don’t feel like you have to figure it all out yourself. When The Bees of Bee Organized help clients unpack and set up their seasonal decorations, we also help them make note of items that have potentially reached the end of their life. We’ll even help you find a replacement, making that one fewer thing on your to do list. Take pictures! Here’s another little trick we love: Once everything is decorated exactly the way you like it, snap a few photos of the finished spaces. Next year, you won’t have to remember where the serving pieces looked best, how you arranged the mantel or which decorations belong in which room of your home. Simply look at the pictures and recreate what worked before! Simplify the process when it’s time to put everything away. Group all

your family’s festive decorations by category, and give each holiday its own designated storage space. Then, next year’s decorating will be a little easier to approach!

Ready to

And, if you’d honestly rather skip the storage bins, ladders and tangled holiday lights altogether, The Bees can help with that, too. We can help transition your home beautifully from Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas – then carefully pack everything away when each season is over. You and your family can focus on enjoying all the benefits of your favorite décor, minus the challenging, exhausting part!

If you need to take a break from all that yardwork, take a trip into downtown Mooresville to see the 44th annual Artoberfest exhibit at Mooresville Arts at the Depot! We are so grateful that Paul has dedicated his time and expertise to select winners for the show. The winners will be announced during the Artoberfest reception on Friday, October 9th from 6pm to 9pm.

For more information about Mooresville Arts’ mission, exhibits, art classes and special events, please visit mooresvillearts.org.

RETIREMENT: IS EVERYDAY SATURDAY?

By JEAN MARIE JOHNSON Thinking ahead to retirement, many of us: Imagined that every day would be Saturday – unencumbered and ours alone to define. Thought that once we crossed the finish line, time would be more malleable – ours alone to fill. Hoped that the constancy of emailing, texting and zooming would be ours alone to determine. Ours alone looked like a future where every day would indeed be Saturday once the rest was blessedly behind us. SELF CARE, CAREGIVER OR BOTH? Well, here’s a reality check – while illness or chronic limiting conditions aren’t inevitable as we age, they are commonplace. In fact, the National Council on Aging notes that nearly 95% of adults 60 and older have at least one chronic condition, and nearly 80% have two or more. The most common of these include: • Arthritis • Heart disease • Hypertension • Cancer • Type 2 diabetes • Dementia • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • Depression • Hearing loss • Cataracts and refractive errors • Back and neck pain • Osteoarthritis And yet, few talk about the practical and emotional aspects of preparing for a stage in life that will likely require:

42 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

• a great deal more and different forms of self care • assuming the role of caregiver for a partner or family member • doing both, simultaneously. My tell me the truth girl inquiry – not to mention my own lived experience – tells me that the checklist that framed your everyday for the past, oh, 40 years or so will suddenly or eventually be populated with a whole new set of urgencies and to dos, so get ready! TRUISM #1: NOT EVERY DAY IS SATURDAY Not every day is Saturday in retirement when managing chronic limiting conditions is in play. I’m sorry, but there you have it. That’s because most of the work of “managing” takes place on familiar terrain – ye old Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That’s something you know well, so, plan to tap into the same skills that made you effective in managing your professional work – project management, time management, being proactive and having the mindset of a team player. Trust me, you will need those front desk people, schedulers, nurses and therapists to help you navigate the healthcare system as you face new and ongoing challenges. Show your appreciation for their role in your journey and always treat them well. Also, be sure to use a calendar system that works for you, whether that’s your ubiquitous phone or a ginormous desk or wall calendar. Trust me, you will need to refer, coordinate and juggle – especially if you are tending to your own issues as well as those of a loved one.

TRUISM #2: YOUR “TRIBE” MATTERS MORE THAN EVER You know the mantra: “It takes a village.” Almost always, when you are there for a neighbor, a neighbor will be there for you. Ensuring that you have people to reach out to for emotional support and for practical hands on help will be key to your sanity! Our people all live elsewhere which is why our home is filled with Hallmark greeting cards and small “thinking of you” gifts. These, along with the “call me when you need me” help from those nearby is priceless. TRUISM #3: TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF IS KEY TO YOUR HEALTH AND PEACE OF MIND I know, we get really tired of hearing this. But, this wise counsel is both spot on and timeless. While self care is individual, common actions you can engage in include things like: • Eating healthy foods • Working out regularly • Taking time to relax • Journaling • Being with friends • Making time for your special hobby • Finding peaceful solitude I “trick” myself into “working out regularly” by doing a 10-minute online video. Because 10 minutes? I can do that! Or take “being with friends.” I have a standing call with a dear friend in Massachusetts every Saturday afternoon. It’s a “date” that only an emergency can interrupt. While every day may not be Saturday in retirement, you can equip yourself for an awesome journey ahead.

Kristin Johnson Speaks REFRESHING INSIGHT FROM HER NEW BOOK: I’M AVAILABLE: HOW TO RECEIVE AND LIVE YOUR UNIQUE PURPOSE Written by MARTIE EMORY, Photography by M. GIOELI PHOTOGRAPHY

E

ngaging speaker and Winston-Salem author Kristin Johnson loves sharing this short, sweet and relevant message: Available people change the world! It’s a message that came to her over and over again in the middle of the night, when she woke up daily – for months – to write and reflect in the wee hours of morning! She ultimately realized the power of opening hands to be available for whatever God calls over the course of a day or season of life. Her first book, I’m Available: How to Receive and Live Your Unique Purpose, debuts on October 15th. The book is designed to encourage her readers to pause and reflect on what it means to be available for all the things that can lead them towards a meaningful life. Kristin shared, “This is something I’ve been learning, too. My daily motivation begins with one simple practice. Before I put my feet on the ground, I quietly say, ‘Good morning, God. I’m available.’ It helps me stay grounded in any and all of the hats I wear every day. It’s been a deeply humbling experience to write a book about receiving and living your purpose.” I’m Available: How to Receive and Live Your Unique Purpose is bursting at the seams with practical wisdom with a comfortable approach, written for anyone who has ever wondered if there might be more to life

experience as less of a writing project and more an exercise in obedience. “In many ways, writing I’m Available: How to Receive and Live Your Unique Purpose has become an exercise in availability itself, and I hope the message extends beyond the pages of the book,” she notes. “Beyond the book, I’ve partnered with a manufacturer to take the lessons of the book beyond its pages and into a wearable accessory to remind readers every day to pray, ‘God, I’m available today.’ The bracelet will be an optional add-on to take the message of the book into a daily reminder that can be worn every day.”

than simply keeping up with the smallest details and longest agendas. Just as she leads seminars, emcees corporate galas, speaks to community groups and offers personal coaching, Kristin writes with both humor and honesty. If your own personal journey finds you slightly more focused on striving just to “keep going” rather than receiving opportunities that might be right in front of your face, I’m Available: How to Receive and Live Your Unique Purpose is designed to encourage people to become more available to their life and its true purpose.

“My hope is that readers close the book feeling encouraged. Not because they suddenly have all the answers, but because they realize they don’t have to,” she shares. “Purpose isn’t something we have to force. Sometimes it’s something we learn to receive.” Kristin’s book is available for pre-order on September 15th and will debut on October 15th. Stay up to date on the launch of her book and bracelet (including a planned book signing), as well as speaking engagements, workshops and upcoming events at KristinJohnsonSpeaks.com. The 2026 Wedding Edit

WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S EVOLVING Weddings in 2026 are less about performance and more about presence. After years of curated perfection and Pinterest pressure, couples are redefining what a meaningful celebration actually looks like. The result? Events that feel deeply personal, thoughtfully designed, and rooted in experience rather than expectation. Here’s what we’re seeing in Lake Norman and beyond: EXPERIENCE OVER EXCESS Guest counts are becoming more intentional. Rather than inviting everyone they’ve ever met, couples are prioritizing connection. Smaller lists often mean elevated experiences: multi-course dinners, custom cocktail moments, immersive décor, and meaningful ceremony elements. It’s not about being extravagant. It’s about being memorable. MULTI-DAY CELEBRATIONS Rehearsal dinners are evolving into welcome parties. Sunday brunches are replacing rushed goodbyes. Weddings are becoming fullweekend experiences that allow couples to spend genuine time with their guests. In a world that moves quickly, slowing down is a luxury. DOCUMENTARY-STYLE PHOTOGRAPHY The stiff, overly posed wedding album is fading. Couples are gravitating toward photographers who capture movement, emotion, and candid in-between moments. The trend leans nostalgic — images that feel lived-in, not staged. Authenticity is the new aesthetic.

RETHINKING TRADITION More couples are choosing: Mixed-gender wedding parties • Private vows before the ceremony • Non-traditional seating arrangements • Thursday or Sunday weddings • Outfit changes that reflect personality •

What’s fading? Obligatory traditions done without intention. Bouquet tosses, rigid timelines, perfectly matched everything — couples are asking one question before keeping any tradition: Does this feel like us? THE THROUGHLINE: PERSONALIZATION The strongest trend of 2026 isn’t a color or a dress silhouette. It’s confidence. Couples are designing weddings that reflect their values, their culture, their humor, and their real lives. Signature drinks named after pets. Handwritten notes at each place setting. Live painters. Surprise performances. Private moments carved into busy timelines. In 2026, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s presence. Because long after the trend cycles shift, what remains isn’t the napkin fold or the seating chart font, it’s how the day felt. And that’s something worth curating carefully.

STATEMENT FLORALS & BOLD PALETTES Neutrals will always have a place, but 2026 is embracing color. Think rich greens, warm terracottas, unexpected blues, layered textures, and organic installations that feel artful rather than symmetrical. Florals are less “centerpiece” and more “environment.”

The two plan to marry at Drew’s family’s farm — also the place where he proposed — followed by a reception at Allison’s aunt and uncle’s farm nearby!

Joyful Journey

CHASING LIGHT AND PLASTER A TRIP ALONG THE BEN LONG FRESCO TRAIL Written By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER, Photography By JOHN C. NELSON

tart or end this journey on October 10, 2026, when the Festival of the Frescoes takes over the picnic grounds of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs, NC. Whether you treat it as your launchpad or your finish line is really a question of temperament. Start there, and you get an entry mobbed with color and noise before the trail goes quiet and contemplative. End there, and the festival becomes a reward, a homecoming after days spent alone with painted saints in empty churches. Either way, the festival is the trail’s beating heart, so build your itinerary around it. Since 1983, the Festival has been less an art opening than a country fair with a soul: rummage tables, dulcimer music, kettle corn, a silent auction, and volunteers who’ll tell you the fresco stories better than any placard. Step inside Holy Trinity and you find “The Last Supper,” completed in 1980. Christ and the apostles rendered with the shadow of Renaissance masters, painted directly into wet plaster the way Michelangelo worked the Sistine ceiling. Fresco is unforgiving:

pigment and plaster cure together in hours, so a mistake can’t be painted over, only replastered and restarted. Benjamin F. Long IV, a Statesville native who apprenticed nearly eight years under Maestro Pietro

Annigoni in Florence, brought that discipline home to Appalachia, and the farmers and mill workers who modeled for him are baked, literally, into the wall. If you’re starting here, drive seven miles to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Beaver Creek School Road in West Jefferson, where Long painted his very first fresco, “Mary Great with Child,” in 1974. Two later additions joined it: “John the Baptist,” wild-eyed above the door, and the monumental “Mystery of Faith” behind the altar, where a broken Christ and a risen Christ share the same wall, the same instant. St. Mary’s is open daily with a selfguided audio program, so there’s no rush. Continued on next page.

eventually found its way into marble lobbies and city halls. Together, these seven locations hold eleven frescoes across the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, more than enough to fill three unhurried days. If you’re saving the Festival for last, run this itinerary in reverse: Charlotte or Statesville, then Wilkesboro, Morganton, Crossnore, Blowing Rock, and St. Mary’s, arriving in Glendale Springs on October 10 with six other frescoes behind you. Walking into the festival grounds after that is a different experience, less an introduction than a culmination, the country fair feeling like a well-earned exhale. PRACTICAL NOTES: most sites request calling ahead, since these remain working churches, Continued from previous page.

From Ashe County, the trail properly opens up. Head south on the Blue Ridge Parkway toward Blowing Rock, where Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church now houses two frescoes with an unlikely history: “The Good Shepherd” and “Psalm 23,” originally commissioned in 2006 for a hospice chapel in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and relocated to Rumple only in 2022. They’re the newest stops on the trail and the most recently installed anywhere in the state.

a school chapel, and a municipal building, not museums. Bring cash for festival vendors, since the bakery table sells out early. Donations at every stop help maintain lime-plaster walls now standing five decades. I know from experience that October makes an ideal trip, because NC16 and NC-88 between Glendale Springs and West Jefferson run through some of the High Country’s most vivid leaf color, ridges catching fire just as the light through each church window catches Long’s saints. By the last stop, whichever end of the trail that is for you, you’ll understand why locals don’t call this an art trail. They call it a way of seeing the mountains, through stone, through story, and through a Florentine technique one homesick North Carolinian brought back to paint his own people into eternity.

Continue toward Avery County for the E.H. Sloop Chapel at Crossnore School, home to “Suffer the Little Children,” painted for a campus built to serve mountain children in need, fitting, given its subject. Then drop south to Morganton, where the Municipal Auditorium holds “Sacred Dance and the Muses,” a rare secular Long fresco, proof the technique wasn’t reserved for sanctuaries alone. A worthwhile detour east lands you at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro, home to “St. Paul’s Conversion” and “St. Paul Writing His Epistles.” For those with an extra day, Long’s frescoes continue into Charlotte, at the Bank of America Corporate Center, and Statesville, his hometown, evidence that a mountain art form

BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS TAKE ON THE WORLD Celebrating Strength, Friendship and Life By CAROLYN SHORE-PETERSON

T

he setting alone was unforgettable. Along felt like an accomplishment before they ever even the shoreline of Lac du Bourget in Aix-lespicked up a paddle. Bains, France, thousands of breast cancer “We, more than most, don’t know if we will be survivors gathered as dragon boats moved across the water and the French Alps rose in the distance. able to attend,” Pam commented, referring to They had traveled from around the world and recurrences, treatments and the reality that some represented different ages, cultures and walks of friends may not be there when the next festival life; yet they shared two important things – they comes around. “To know that we could attend was were breast cancer survivors and they loved a triumph in itself.” dragon boating. For Pam Boileau, a Cornelius, North Carolina resident and luxury real estate broker with Ivester Jackson/Christie’s International Real Estate, arriving with members of Healing Dragons was difficult to put into words. “We were awestruck by the sheer beauty of the venue,” Pam said. “But to know that almost everyone at the site was a survivor made us breathless.” Held every four years, the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) Participatory Dragon Boat Festival brings breast cancer survivor teams together for several days of paddling, education, fellowship and celebration. For Pam and her teammates, making it to France

HOW HEALING DRAGONS BEGAN Healing Dragons of Charlotte began in 2009 with Randy Crow and his wife, Lori, and an unexpected experience in Florida. Randy wanted to try dragon boat racing, but the only open seat was on a cancer survivor boat. The team welcomed him, and he returned home determined to create a similar opportunity in the Lake Norman area. Randy and Lori believed in the idea so strongly that money they had saved to remodel their kitchen instead went toward a boat, trailer and equipment. With help from local nonprofits and enough survivors interested in paddling, Healing Dragons of Charlotte was born. Pam joined in 2011 after watching dragon boat racing at the Asian Festival on Lake Norman. A former competitive swimmer and lifelong water enthusiast, she didn’t know anyone on the team. “I loved the mission and was ready to get out of my comfort zone and try something totally unique and different,” stated Pam. What she found went far beyond a new sport. “We know that we could reach out to any of our BCS sisters for help or a listening ear, and they will be there for us in a second,” Pam commented. THINGS CHANGE WHEN THEY GET IN THE BOAT One thing people may underestimate about Healing Dragons is just how strong these women are. “Some of us don’t look athletic. We have a few members who have difficulty navigating swaying docks, getting into boats or carrying equipment,” said Pam. Once they’re on the water, however, something changes. “When we are in the boat and following the various commands given by our coach or steers person, we are magical in the water,” Pam stated.

pushed away from the launch and paddled toward the starting line, the boat grew quiet. A few tears fell. Some softly spoke the names of former teammates who had died, while others whispered, “We made it” and “Just ride along with us.” Those words carried the weight of the journey. Treatments, cancer recurrences, family, work responsibilities and financial concerns had made the trip uncertain for some. Now they were in France, carrying the memories of teammates who couldn’t be beside them. FLOWERS, PRAYERS AND GRATITUDE For Pam, the Flower Ceremony was the festival’s most emotional and spiritual tradition. Dressed alike, participants gathered along the shoreline, creating a sea of pink from above. Music played as they waited to enter the water and release flowers. Some prayed for friends who had died, others for women still in treatment, while many quietly gave thanks for their own lives. “It is magical,” Pam recalled. “It is forever life changing.” The following day brought heartbreaking news. Former teammate Angie had died after her breast cancer returned and spread to vital organs; she had passed during the Flower Ceremony. The news made an already meaningful tradition even more personal and reminded the team why every opportunity to gather, travel and paddle together matters. MORE THAN A SURVIVOR Pam understands how precious life is. She is a two-time breast cancer survivor, first diagnosed in June of 2005 and again in 2023. Her mother died from metastatic breast cancer, and her daughter, Kim Harkness, was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in 2018. Yet Pam has never wanted cancer to define her life. She prefers another word: thriver.

Healing Dragons has successfully competed against community and club teams, including those without a cancer-survivor designation, and has won numerous medals.

Her experiences have deepened her faith, strengthened her gratitude and reinforced her desire to help others. Her message to women facing breast cancer is simple – life is for living, and cancer does not define it.

In France, however, racing was only part of the experience. Along with several races, the festival included educational seminars, medical Q&A sessions, wellness classes, concerts and a Parade of Nations. “We were just so happy to be there together,” Pam said.

For Pam and the Healing Dragons, France was a chance to live that message, to race, laugh, pray and paddle alongside survivors from around the world. Cancer may be part of their stories, but there is still plenty left to write. And this was only the beginning of their story.

“WE MADE IT”

WHAT TO SAY WHEN SOMEONE RECEIVES A DIFFICULT DIAGNOSIS By REBECCA STEVENS

M

y husband and I recently found ourselves on the receiving end of a very difficult diagnosis that seemed to come – to us at least – straight out of nowhere. As with all of life’s hardest experiences, there are rich and meaningful lessons that God has to teach us if only we’re willing to open our hearts and minds to be receptive to the message.

One takeaway from all of this is that wellmeaning friends and family are often left speechless in terms of knowing what to say and, bless their dear souls, they seem to feel the need to say something. So, please allow me to put the words in your mouth. Consider rehearsing the following simple but heartfelt script until it springs from your lips almost effortlessly. “I am so sorry. I can only imagine how hard this is for you. I care so deeply about you that I’m hurting with and for you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.” That’s it. Four short sentences that say all that needs to be said. You may or may not want to accompany your speech with a warm hug if you are fairly certain that it would be appreciated and appropriate. But then it is time to zip your lips and to allow your friend the opportunity to speak from her heart if she wants to. You can perhaps fill any void that might occur with bringing to mind the following list of thoughtful and compassionate reminders. 1. Recognize that the patient and her loved ones may be in a state of shock for several days after they receive the diagnosis. Give them plenty of grace if they are not able to

64 64| LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

answer all of your questions as they were probably too overwhelmed to remember everything that the doctor said. They will probably be able to tell you what the immediate next steps will look like, but that may be all that the doctor felt that the patient could handle hearing at the outset. And, if your friend should say something that seems completely out of character for her, remind yourself that people who are caught in a whirlwind of turbulent emotions can’t always rely on their normal filters to keep their tongues completely in check.

4. Be attentive. The patient or her loved ones might give you valuable clues as to how you can help them. In our case, thoughtful friends listened carefully to how terrified I am of driving in downtown Charlotte traffic and were quick to offer to drive us to and from appointments with specialists. I was beyond grateful because I can now channel the emotional energy that I would have wasted on white-knuckling it to those appointments into arriving calmer and better able to focus on all that the doctor has to say.

2. The patient and his loved ones don’t need to hear how your Great Aunt Sally had the same ailment and how she coped with it. Unless you happen to know of any highly promising and cutting-edge treatment options that will offer these newly diagnosed people genuine hope and encouragement, telling them your personal stories accomplishes very little. It’s also wise to remember that many conditions vary widely from person to person, so this patient’s experience may be vastly different from anyone else’s.

5. Don’t feel that you need to “keep a stiff upper lip” for the patient and her loved ones. If your compassion for them moves you to tears, they will be blessed to know how much you care and comforted to know that they need not be embarrassed by their own tears. Romans 12:15 (ESV) reminds us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.” To my mind, the Apostle Paul’s advice was spot on.

3. Refrain from trying to tell the patient and his loved ones that everything will be just fine. They are painfully aware that everything won’t be fine, at least not for the foreseeable future. You will also want to refrain from trying to tell your friend that their condition isn’t all that bad. They will undoubtedly react by trying to force a pained smile through clenched teeth while thinking, “If it isn’t so bad, would you want this same diagnosis?” The most loving thing to say if you know that the patient and his loved ones are people of faith is to simply remind them that you will be praying earnestly that God will comfort them, sustain them and give them peace in the difficult days ahead.

My prayer is that I have left you with helpful words to say when a friend suddenly suffers a knockout blow that sends them reeling into an unknown abyss. But know that it’s also never wrong to just sit in silence with your friend while you hold their trembling hands. There are times when actions truly do speak louder than words. In times like those, it is important to remember that many people must process their pain in silence. One might even wonder if these fragile ones desperately need others to silence their voices to enable them to tune their ears to the still, small voice of God. I for one can think of no more priceless gift to offer a hurting friend.

919 Backyard BBQ GROUND BEEF BROTH BOWLS By TANNER JOHNSON

F

or October, I wanted to share a new recipe I’ve been seeing all over the internet that definitely hits the spot with the cooler fall air starting to creep in: Broth Bowls. They’re really simple, full of flavor and very versatile.

INGREDIENTS: Ground Beef: • 1 lb. ground beef (96/4; if using fattier beef, you’ll just want to drain the grease) • 1 bell pepper • 2 tbsp. honey • 3 tbsp. soy sauce • 2 tbsp. rice vinegar • 1 tbsp. sesame oil Broth: • 3 cups chicken broth • 1/2 cup whole milk • 2 tbsp. sriracha (less if you don’t like too much heat) • 1 tbsp. tomato paste • 1 tbsp. soy sauce • 2 tsp. honey • 1–2 cloves garlic, minced

66 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make your rice however you like. 2. Dice and sauté the bell pepper, seasoning with salt and pepper. Remove from the pan and set aside. 3. Brown the ground beef in a pan over medium-high heat until crisp. 4. Add the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar and sesame oil. Stir until the beef is nicely coated. 1. Cook for a few more minutes, then add the diced pepper back in and stir it all together. For the broth: 1. Whisk together the chicken broth, tomato paste, soy sauce, sriracha, honey and garlic. 2. Simmer for a few minutes, about 5 or so. 3. Reduce the heat and stir in the whole milk. Let it cook for a couple more minutes over medium-low heat. 4. Add your ground beef and rice to a bowl, then pour in the broth and add whatever other toppings you desire! 5. I like to add avocado and cucumber slices. Enjoy!

to understand why the USPS wanted to pay him homage. Marianne, my wife, and I were fortunate enough to be part of the entourage to make the trip to Portugal. It is beautiful and the climate is mild. It borders Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. When we arrived, they housed us in a beautiful hotel with a lovely pool. It was obvious that this was a popular vacation spot for Europeans. Our homage began the next day by bus which gave us the opportunity to see the countryside. I asked about all the trees I saw that seemed to have their barks taken off them. I learned that they are Cork oak trees, and they are native to Portugal. In fact, they are the most common tree in Portugal. Some of them were red and I learned that this was a sign that they had just been harvested. They peel the bark of the trees every nine years. It was an unusual sight. We arrived at the school in Sarges. Not sure what I expected but it was 800 years old. I couldn’t help noticing that it had the points of a compass cut in the stone in the courtyard. But that was about it. There was no sign of the great work that had been accomplished there years ago.

One Man’s Perspective: PORTUGAL The President was available to see us By CHARLIE SCHULER

A

while back, the United States Power Squadron, USPS, aka Americas Boating Club, ABC, decided to go to Portugal and pay homage to Prince Henry the Navigator. His reputation is renowned through the USPS. One of the goals of USPS is to teach safe boating, from the very basics right up to celestial navigation. Prince Henry was born in Portugal in 1394, and he made his reputation as a navigator

because he started a school of seafarers in Sarges, Portugal. This school developed many of the tools used for navigation such as the Quadrangle and the Astrolabe. These preceded the sextant that we know today. The Astrolabe was invented by the Greeks in 225BC to tell time and to help locate celestial bodies. The compass was invented by the Chinese in 206BC and improved for navigation in the 13th century. Prince Henry encouraged seafarers, cartographers, and scientists to attend his school and they worked together to develop new trade routes, tools for navigation, and even the sailing vessel they call the LATEEN design. The Lateen sail, triangular shaped, allowed sailing vessels to sail into the wind and not just broadside, or downwind. Latitude and Longitude are techniques used to determine any spot on the earth. Celestial navigation is where you sight a heavenly body and measure the angle it is to the horizon. Couple this with the exact time and you can get your location on a line. Two different sightings will improve the accuracy of your position and three even more. This can bring you to within yards of your physical location. John Harrison is credited with building the first marine timekeeper to be accurate enough for marine use. You need the exact time to determine your longitude. The exact latitude can be determined from your celestial sight. It is easy to understand the significance of the work done by Prince Henry the Navigator and

when we came by to honor Prince Henry the Navigator. The palace was magnificent and the President very gracious. He was pleased that we had made the trip and our honoring Prince Henry.

Global Positioning Service has made finding your location easy, but the sexton and celestial navigation will never die. There are 24 satellites in the sky, and they are vulnerable to many things, such as electricity, space junk and so on. The military needs celestial navigation and the USPS taught this to the military in WW II. They continue to teach celestial navigation to the sailors who want to sail out of the sight of land. I used the sextant when we sailed to Bermuda from Raritan Yacht Club in New Jersey. It worked well and we got to where we wanted to go.

Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center: REHABBER

FROM APPRENTICE TO LICENSED

WHERE THE WILD GET A SECOND CHANCE Written By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER, Photography By CWCC STAFF

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” — DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

T

ucked into 140 acres of protected forest in Iron Station, NC, the Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center (CWCC) has spent years quietly working at the intersection of veterinary medicine, ecology, and community service. Since settling into its current location in 2019, the center has built a reputation for treating injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals, all while tackling cases so unusual they read more like medical mysteries than routine rehab stories.

A FOREST BUILT FOR RECOVERY CWCC’s site isn’t just a building, it’s an ecosystem. The property includes a wildlife hospital and care center, a welcome center for visitors, and a network of outdoor rehabilitation enclosures spread across the protected land. That layout is intentional: wild animals recovering from injury or illness need more than medical treatment.

70 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

They need a way to gradually relearn how to survive outdoors before they’re released. Staggered, tiered rehabilitation spaces let animals move through progressive stages of recovery, from close medical supervision to more naturalistic, semi-wild conditions. Almost all of CWCC’s adult and reptile patients are released back where they were found, but many of the babies are placed at other release sites entirely, a deliberate strategy to spread populations out and keep any one area from becoming overcrowded with newly wild neighbors. Running all of this is a lean team of six staff members, four of whom are licensed wildlife rehabilitators. It’s a small crew for the scope of the work, which is part of why CWCC leans so heavily on volunteers, interns, and apprentices to keep operations running.

One of the more compelling parts of CWCC’s story is how it grows its own talent. The center offers volunteer opportunities, internships, and apprenticeships, with the apprenticeship track built for people serious about pursuing wildlife rehabilitation as more than a hobby. That path recently paid off: one of CWCC’s apprentices earned her wildlife rehabilitation license and has since joined the staff as a seasonal wildlife rehabber becoming a full-circle moment the whole team celebrated. For anyone considering getting involved, the main requirement is simple: volunteers must be 18 or older. Continued on next page.

Continued from previous page.

THE CASES THAT STICK WITH STAFF Ask CWCC’s team about memorable patients, and the stories pour out, each one a small case study in resilience. There was Opera, a raccoon whose facial injury had begun healing in a way that threatened her eyesight, as tightening scar tissue interfered with her ability to blink. Dr. D’Amelio devised a specialized wound-dressing technique, the first time the team had tried this approach, that let the eye heal without being swallowed up by scar tissue. Opera regained her vision and was eventually released back to the property where she was found, where she still visits the family who rescued her. Then there was Voldemort, a snapping turtle hit by a vehicle, arriving with severe facial injuries

and shoulder fractures so extensive the team initially doubted he’d survive. Veterinarians, including outside turtle specialist Dr. Greg Lewbart, collaborated on a plan involving temporary nasal tubes and close monitoring. Snapping turtles’ unusual physiology worked in Voldemort’s favor, giving him alternate ways to breathe while his face healed. He eventually passed every survival test from eating and submerging to behaving normally, before returning to the wild. And this year, the nighttime skies over CWCC are especially busy. Twenty big brown bat patients were recently released, all had roosted together in the center’s specialized Bat House as they learned to fly, catch insects, and grow up. While the bat house is currently unoccupied, the house holds babies raised from neonates, mother bats with their offspring, and adults healing from injury, all awaiting a second chance at being wild. Last year, that program took on

an especially high-stakes patient: a Tricolored Bat, a species currently proposed for the Endangered Species list.

GETTING INVOLVED As the days shorten and autumn settles over the Carolinas, CWCC is stepping out of the forest for McDowell Nature Center’s 17th Annual Nature at Night Festival, Saturday, October 17, 5:00–9:00 PM with live animals, hands-on crafts, guided night hikes, wagon rides, s’mores, and food trucks. It’s a rare chance to experience the natural world after dark, the hours when raccoons like Opera and CWCC’s bats are most active. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to share stories from the rehab floor and explain how the community can help the next Voldemort or tricolored bat get a second chance. Can’t make the festival? CWCC’s doors are open year-round to community members, businesses, and organizations, whether it’s a percentage night at a local restaurant, a trivia fundraiser, a workplace donation drive, or an idea of your own.

BREAKING FREE FROM SOCIETAL EXPECTATIONS: DEFINING SUCCESS ON YOUR OWN TERMS By JOY NELSON THOMAS

S

ince we were kids, we’ve all heard the same script – get good grades, go to college, find a stable job, buy a house, get married, raise children and retire comfortably. Those things aren’t bad at all, but they can make us believe that success looks the same for everyone. The truth is that success is personal. It’s different for each of us. I’ve learned that “checking the boxes” doesn’t always lead to joy. Sometimes it leads to burnout, emptiness or even resentment. We end up performing for people instead of truly living. Here’s what I know now – success isn’t about society’s definition. It’s not even about our own ideas of what we think life should look like. Success is about walking in the plan already written for us. What if you stopped holding on so tightly to your own plan and started trusting His?

When Our Plans Don’t Go As Planned We love to make timelines for ourselves. Where we should be by 25. What we should have by 40. What life should look like by retirement. And, when things don’t go that way, disappointment sneaks in. But, what if that detour was re-direction? What feels like a delay is often protection or preparation. The turning point comes when you find the courage to let people down if it means being free. One of the hardest parts of this journey is realizing that not everyone will get it. And, that’s okay. Sometimes faith looks like stepping out when it doesn’t make sense. Other times it’s choosing rest when the world says hustle harder. Now is the Time to Chase Freedom When you stop living under pressure, you step into freedom. Freedom to do work that matters to you. Freedom to slow down. Freedom to put people before

74 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM

achievements. Freedom to build a life you don’t always need a vacation from. In the end, success isn’t about how close your life comes to checking society’s boxes. It’s about how fully you’re living out your calling. So, give yourself permission. Permission to pivot. Permission to grow. Permission to choose joy. Permission to let go of what no longer serves you. The life you’re building is yours. And, that’s success. Until next time, enjoy the journey, and let’s stop performing and start living.

W

hat if making different choices in what we eat could make a big difference in our health? That is the heart of my Mediterranean Lifestyle Class. When my family began following the Mediterranean way of eating, we quickly learned that it wasn’t about making drastic changes overnight. It was about making better choices, one meal at a time. We discovered that simple swaps and mindful decisions could become everyday habits, and those habits made a tremendous difference in our health. One of the most important changes we made was choosing extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as the exclusive oil we use. We use it for cooking, roasting, sautéing, and making homemade salad dressings. We will talk about why EVOO is such an important part of the Mediterranean way of eating, how to find a good quality EVOO, how to choose one that fits your needs, and what to look for when shopping. During the class, we will also take a closer look at healthy bread and sourdough. Bread doesn’t have to be something you avoid when trying to eat healthier. Learning about ingredients, preparation,

MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN STEW

Serves: 4

INGREDIENTS: • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 2 stalks celery, cut into bite-size pieces • 1 carrot, peeled & cut into bite-size pieces • 1 small onion, diced • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 can low-sodium chopped tomatoes • 24 ounces low-sodium chicken broth • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 bay leaf • 1 1/2 pounds chicken breasts • 1 can kidney beans, rinsed & drained DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the celery, carrot, and onion. Sauté until the onion is soft, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Stir in the tomatoes with their juices, chicken broth, tomato paste, basil, reserving some for topping, and bay leaf. Add the chicken breasts, pressing them down so they are submerged. 3. Bring the stew to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer uncovered until the chicken is cooked through, turning as needed. This takes about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken breasts. 4. Remove the cooked chicken from the Dutch oven and place it on a cutting board to rest. Remove the bay leaf. Add the kidney beans and allow them to simmer while you shred or chop the chicken. 5. Return the chicken to the Dutch oven and simmer on low for another 5 to 10 minutes. 6. Taste the broth and add additional salt and pepper if needed. Top with fresh basil and serve with whole grain or sourdough bread. RECIPE NOTES: • Add additional chicken broth if you prefer a more soup-like consistency. • Consider doubling this recipe. It makes great leftovers for the next day, making it an easy option for a busy weeknight meal.

JOYFUL MOMENTS OF THE FALL SEASON By HALLEIGH MILLESON

A

fter the hot days of summer, I am always looking forward to the cool days of the fall season. Even though days begin to feel shorter, time is filled with driving to pumpkin patches, baking sweet desserts, wearing comfortable sweaters and enjoying time being outside in the cool air. I have always viewed fall as a calming, peaceful season. With fall comes the reminder that change is inevitable but beautiful as seen in the leaves turning colors on the trees surrounding us. Fall is filled with joyful days and, below, I share what I look forward to the most during this season. Fall Baking: One of my favorite things about fall is baking delicious fall desserts. I love making homemade pumpkin bread, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, s’mores cookies, snickerdoodle cookies and a warm apple crisp topped with vanilla ice cream. There is something calming about spending time baking and being able to enjoy a homemade dessert. When I was younger, I was never a huge fan of pumpkin-flavored foods but, as I’ve gotten older, I have come to enjoy the taste of pumpkin during fall. Whether you are making cookies for yourself to enjoy or making a loaf of pumpkin bread to take to a family gathering, the fall season brings many delicious recipes to bake. Fall Coffees: I love going to local coffee shops on the weekends and getting iced coffees to enjoy. During the fall season, it is always

delightful to get coffees that typically have pumpkin, cinnamon, maple and hazelnut flavors. Many coffee shops will have seasonal menus that have delicious fall-flavored drinks to choose from. Enjoy meeting a friend for coffee, getting a coffee to enjoy while you run your weekend errands or bringing a coffee to work with you. Fall Outfits: Even though I love wearing t-shirts, shorts and sandals, I always look forward to wearing fall outfits. I enjoy wearing ankle boots during the fall, and I love wearing both ankle boots that have a flat heel and a low high heel. Sweaters are another essential piece of a fall wardrobe. There are so many comfortable, soft sweaters that can be worn with a pair of jeans and ankle boots. Cardigans are my go-to when I do not want to wear a heavy sweater with my outfit. Fall themed earrings are my favorite accessory to wear. I have a pair of pumpkin clay earrings with flowers on them. There are so many cute pairs of fall earrings to choose from that complement any outfit. Fall Home Decor: Another activity I love during the fall season is decorating my home with fall decor. Being able to put pumpkins outside my front door, lighting vanilla pumpkin candles, watching a movie at night with a cozy orange blanket and setting out fall-themed decorations make my home feel ready for the fall season. It always makes me happy putting out fall decorations and moving decorations around to find the right spots to place the decor. I love having decorations out when I have family or friends over for dinner or

a movie night. Since I am living in my first apartment, I have been slowly buying a few decorations for each season. Simply having a few decorations out for fall helps me to appreciate the season while it’s here. Baking a fresh batch of s’mores cookies, sipping on a caramel coffee, wearing fallthemed earrings, picking out a pumpkin to sit outside my front door and lighting a vanilla pumpkin candle are some of my favorite parts of fall. As time moves quickly, remember to slow down to enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of fall. I hope that this article will give you ideas of seasonal joys to fully enjoy during the fall season.
