Happy Mother’s Day! I’ll start by sending love and appreciation to my amazing mama. Having a mom like her has been such a blessing. We love her dearly and thank the Lord for her presence in our lives. Her grands, and greatgranddaughter, love her to the moon and back.

May is such a big month for us and for so many in our community. Lake season is officially here, and our family is beyond excited! Real Estate Broker Ayla Johnson has lived in the Lake Norman area since the age of one — and has grown to love literally everything about the lake!

“I know the Lake Norman area extremely well because I have spent so much time here — and in the surrounding areas,” she shares. “A lot of my free time is spent on the lake with my family and friends, trying new restaurants in the area, and exploring all the different towns and communities close by.”

Ayla began her career in the field of real estate with a passion for working with people and building new relationships.

A vibrant pesto chicken rice bowl layered with juicy chicken, fluffy rice, crisp vegetables, and a bright basil pesto for an easy, flavor-packed meal.

Servings: 4

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

• 2 1/2 cups chicken, shredded

• 1-17.3 ounces microwavable brown rice

• 1/2 cup pesto

• 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved

• 1 medium zucchini, quartered and sliced

• Parmesan cheese, shredded

• Avocado oil, for cooking

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• Fresh basil, for garnish

Instructions:

1. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of avocado oil. Add the zucchini and cook for 4–5 minutes, until tender and lightly browned. Season with salt and pepper.

Big on style, but overflowing with small town charm, The Twisted Tulip Boutique in Denver, NC is a labor of love for mother/ daughter duo Cindy Rubick and Danielle Barnett.

The two first opened the brick-and-mortar version of The Twisted Tulip Boutique in October of 2019. It was an obvious business direction for both, as Cindy has always, always loved fashion, and Danielle had plenty of boutique experience to bring to the new venture. What began quietly as an online store in March of 2019, with the two showcasing their inventory via their own videos, is now a thriving small business – always with a keen eye on trends they know customers will love.

“Our business was a simple idea,” shares Danielle. “We wanted to create a place where quality, authenticity and community come together. What began as a small vision turned into a shared dream – offering products we truly believe in and a shopping experience that feels personal, not transactional.”

Long before Dynamis, this land was known as Highland Orchards, where apples, peaches, and grains thrived in the Brushy Mountains. The soil was fertile. The elevation mattered. The land knew how to produce.

That story reaches further back.

North Carolina was once a leader in American wine, long before California came to define the category. Native varietals flourished here, and the state’s wines were recognized well beyond its borders. The Mother Vine on Roanoke Island, still alive today, stands as the oldest cultivated grapevine in the United States, a reminder that this region has always had the conditions to produce meaningful wine.

That history didn’t disappear. It waited.

When the property was first explored as a vineyard site, what stood out wasn’t just its past, but its potential. The elevation, soils, and rhythm of the climate suggested something more, a place capable of producing wines with structure, balance, and identity.

BREAKING THE STIGMA: TEACHING KIDS THAT IT’S OKAY TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

Kids experience big emotions, just like we do, and it’s important to create a home where mental health is a normal and safe topic. By opening up the conversation early, you can teach kids that their emotions matter and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

HOW TO NORMALIZE MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSIONS AT HOME

A great first step to breaking the stigma is making mental health a natural part of daily life by talking about feelings regularly. You can do this by:

• Sharing your own emotions with your children in a way they can absorb and process. You can say things like, “I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today. When I feel this way, I like to take a deep breath and relax for a minute.” You can also express when you’re feeling angry but maintain a calm tone. Allowing your children to see how you properly handle every emotion can help them open up when they feel those emotions, too.

• Encouraging your children to check in with themselves. You can guide them to do daily check-ins or reflections so they are aware of their emotions.

• Use activities the family already enjoys as conversation starters like books, movies or TV shows. If a character is

sad or frustrated, you can ask, “What do you think they’re feeling? Have you ever felt that way?”

When kids see emotions being acknowledged and discussed openly, they learn that it’s normal to talk about how they feel.

PHRASES YOU CAN USE TO ENCOURAGE OPENNESS

Sometimes kids don’t open up because they don’t know how or they fear being judged. Here are some simple phrases that create a safe space for honest conversations:

• “It’s okay to feel sad, mad or worried. Your feelings are valid.”

• “You don’t have to keep this to yourself. I’m here for you.”

• “You’re not in trouble for feeling this way. Let’s talk more about it.”

• “I love you no matter what, and I want to help you work through this.”

These words reassure them that their emotions are valid and that they won’t be criticized for expressing how they feel.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

Your children will learn by watching how you conduct yourself. If they see you being open about emotions, they’ll be more likely to do the same. Model self care by taking time

to rest, meditate or journal, and they will see these habits as healthy ways to cope in difficult times. And, don’t exclude them from your coping and healing process if you find a healthy and age-appropriate way to talk about your feelings. There will be times you have to lean on a friend, therapist or family member, and showing them that asking for help is normal will help them combat so many things that could materialize into mental illness later on. Through your actions, make sure they know that seeking support is the best thing to do.

WHEN IT’S OUT OF YOUR CONTROL

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you may notice your child is struggling in ways that go beyond what you can help with at home. If you see signs of persistent anxiety, depression or dramatic changes in behavior, seeking professional support may be the best course of action. Let your child know our brains can get physically sick just like any other organ in our body and that getting help from a counselor or therapist isn’t a punishment or anything of which to be ashamed.

Breaking the stigma around mental health starts at home. By creating a space where emotions are valued, encouraging open discussions and leading by example, you can help your child grow into a confident, emotionally healthy individual. No one should struggle alone, so instill in them that it’s okay to ask for help.

THE SECRET TO STUNNING HANGING BASKETS

At the garden center, spring is in full swing, and you’ve likely noticed the abundance of gorgeous hanging baskets on display. While they may look effortless, many people find it surprisingly challenging to keep their baskets full, vibrant, and blooming all season long.

The most common issues are improper placement, inconsistent watering, and lack of fertilization.

It helps to remember that plants are living things, just like us, and they need the right environment and nutrients to truly thrive. Here at the shop, we like to keep things simple when guiding customers, so here are a few key tips to help your hanging baskets look their very best.

First, it’s important to know whether you’re choosing a sun-loving or shade basket. Sun baskets often include varieties like scabiosa, lantana, purslane, million bells, petunias, and geraniums. These need at least five hours of direct sunlight each day to perform well.

Shade baskets, on the other hand, are typically filled with begonias, impatiens, New Guinea impatiens, fuchsias, or torenia. These plants prefer morning sun or filtered light and should be protected from the hot afternoon sun, especially after 12 p.m.

Another key to keeping your baskets blooming is deadheading. This simply means removing spent blooms by pinching them

off just behind the flower head. When a plant starts producing seeds, it believes its job is done and will slow down or even stop producing new blooms. Regular trimming encourages fuller growth and continuous flowering.

Watering is where most people run into trouble, specifically under-watering. Hanging baskets dry out quickly and typically need to be watered daily, sometimes even twice a day during hot or windy weather. An easy way to check is to stick your finger into the soil up to your second knuckle. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. You can also lift the basket; if it feels light, it needs hydration.

When watering, avoid spraying over the top of the plant. Instead, gently lift the foliage and water the soil directly using a soft shower setting until you feel the basket become heavier. Keep in mind that wind can dry baskets out just as quickly as heat, so be sure to check them more often on breezy days.

Finally, don’t forget to feed your plants. Hanging baskets are what we call “heavy feeders,” meaning they require regular nutrients to keep producing those beautiful blooms. Because they’re planted in a limited amount of soil, nutrients are quickly depleted. We recommend fertilizing at least once a week with a high-phosphorus fertilizer to keep them looking lush and full.

One last simple tip is to rotate your baskets every few days to encourage even growth on all sides.

With just a little extra attention, your hanging baskets can go from struggling to absolutely stunning and stay that way all season long.

One Man’s Perspective FAVORITE MEMORY

Iwas asked what my favorite memory was. That’s a tough question; I have so many. But as I thought, the Exuma’s kept coming to mind. The Exuma’s are the southern islands of the Bahamas. We wintered there three years, four months at a time because we loved them so much.

The water is so clear that you can see the bottom at 30’. You can check your anchor, see the fish, especially starfish, and magnificent corals with their varied colors and the fish that they feed. The weather is something you dream about. We go far enough south that it has never been below 50 degrees with a daily average in the 80’s. All of this is just inviting you to jump in and swim. We did that daily and especially enjoyed our Joy Bath. This is what sailors do to bathe. Jump in and get wet. Get out of the water and soap down with Joy soap. Back in the water to rinse all the soap off, then out again to dry. No salt on the body. When we got back to the mainland, a hairdresser told Marianne that her hair was beautiful. Marianne said she washed it in Joy soap and salt water.

We have been looking for the Green Flash as long as we have been sailing. The sun can be coming up or going down below the horizon. It is the green ray in the spectrum of light that last appears just before total darkness. The Geen Flash is very quick, about 2-3 seconds at most. This was a perfect place to see it. Clear skies and a clear horizon. Nothing to impede the view. And I saw it. It was spectacular. It only lasts a few seconds, but it is real and I saw it. The next day our son was with us, and I told him this story. When he looked, he saw it and he turned to me and said,” You mean that?”. I said yes and I guess it doesn’t mean anything to him now.

Bananas are plentiful. You can walk under a coconut tree and just pick them up. When you do, you shake them and listen to hear the liquid inside. If you don’t hear any, the coconuts are not good.

We learned how to prepare conch in every way possible, and it was delicious with cocktails. You always knew when it was Happy Hour, because all the conch horns started blowing. Yes, we had made one as well. You take the conch out, and you cut off the end of the shell. Let it dry in the sun, and you

we had to get a plastic pipe that would fit over the throttle of the outboard engine. Then we would have a length of line attached to the bow ring. This permitted you to stand in the middle of the inflatable, hold the line attached to the bow and control the outboard. It worked great!

We would use our 42’ Tayana sailboat to travel to various locations. Set the anchor. Then hop in the dingy to do our exploring. It was a great life, and I am so pleased that God let us do it and gave us such wonderful memories.

I’m a 63-year-old married woman who recently received a diagnosis of stage four cancer. I haven’t shared this news with anyone, including my husband, because I don’t want to burden them with my troubles. Throughout my life, I’ve been the strong one in my family, taking care of everyone, often at the expense of my own well-being. My husband and two adult children have accused me of being controlling, and as they’ve grown older and started their own families, they’ve distanced themselves from us. My husband and I tolerate each other and have remained together out of a sense of obligation to our children, not out of love. In my mind, divorce was never an option, and he felt the same way. However, we’ve been living separate lives for a very long time. I’ve gotten used to being alone, but I never felt truly lonely until now. I’m still working and fill my spare time with various activities and spending time with friends. I’ve been the person people turn to when they have problems, seeking advice or guidance. I don’t understand why my family doesn’t do the same. I suppose that’s a different issue for another time.

I’m writing because I’m terrified to share my diagnosis with my family and friends. Will they be available for emotional support? Will they even care? I’ve never wanted to be a burden, but the fear of the unknown paralyzes me. It’s not death that scares me; I don’t want to die, nor am I ready. My concern is the disappointment and hurt I’ll feel if they abandon me. Will my illness and need for my family’s support drive them further away? Trust me, I’m aware of my mistakes. I’m certain my husband and children perceive me as overbearing at times. I’ve been telling them what to do instead of listening and offering them advice. I don’t enjoy it, but I understand their need to distance themselves from me. They view my input as control, while I see it as caring. Naturally, we disagree, which terrifies me. Will they be willing to help, or even want to? Can they forgive me for pushing them away, even though my intention was always good? What can I do to open my heart and allow them to support me, even though it’s going to be a challenge for me? Regrettably, it took this diagnosis for me to gain clarity. I hope it’s not too late. Please help…

I wish you the best of luck in your journey towards healing. While it may be challenging, maintaining a positive attitude and diligently following your treatments increases your chances of overcoming this. Adversity often serves as a valuable teacher. Unfortunately, it took this diagnosis to bring clarity to certain aspects of your life, which is not uncommon. The first step is to forgive yourself for past mistakes and embrace the lessons they offer. There’s wisdom in every mistake we make if we choose to seek it out. It’s not uncommon for some couples to remain in unhealthy marriages, believing they’re doing what’s best for their children. Children are perceptive and can sense the constant bickering, apathy, and negative energy that are prevalent in troubled marriages. I’ve spoken to many adults whose parents were unhappily married and felt they would have been better off if they had divorced. This might be one reason why your children have distanced themselves from you and your husband. It would be beneficial to have an open and honest conversation with them about this.

The only aspect of our lives we can truly control is our attitude. Attempting to

control what others say, do, think, or feel is a futile endeavor that drains our time and energy. True control lies in the ability to release it when it serves our best interests. Now is an opportune moment to let go and concentrate on your healing. A good beginning would be to inform your family and friends about your diagnosis; they might surprise you with their supportive response. Embracing a life based on fear is detrimental, and attempting to control your future fosters anxiety, worry, and other negative emotions that hinder your healing process. You won’t know if they’re willing to help unless you ask. I believe that revelation fosters intimacy. Some people run towards adversity, while others run away from it. Whether they’re family or friends, you won’t know who they are until you let them know. Now’s a good time to be honest with them and yourself. You’ll need their help to succeed in your journey, and they need to know so they can decide if they want to join you. Don’t be afraid to ask for forgiveness and help; some may say no, while others may say yes. It’s better to know one way or the other. You’ll be able to focus on your healing while reconciling and nurturing relationships with those who are willing to forgive your past mistakes and support your healing journey…

HOW NAMI CHARLOTTE PEER SUPPORT IS CHANGING LIVES

Jennifer Gates first walked into a NAMI Charlotte support group three years ago, feeling isolated and alone.

Her adult daughter suffers from severe mental illness, and Jennifer was carrying the weight that so many caregivers know too well. Friends and family wanted to help, but they couldn’t fully grasp what it means to love someone whose illness must be managed day by day, year after year—in Jennifer’s case, that meant supporting her daughter through multiple diagnoses, more than 20 hospitalizations, and countless crises.

The journey was relentless. And Jennifer was exhausted.

NAMI became the place where she could exhale.

Through NAMI Charlotte’s family support groups, Jennifer found more than information. She found hope and connection with people who truly understood what she was going through. She learned how to cope without giving up, how to hold space for her daughter’s illness while still allowing herself to dream for her own life. NAMI helped her move from constant crisis mode to a place of steadier ground.

Today, there is progress. Jennifer’s daughter has been working steadily for more than a year. Their communication has improved, thanks to skills Jennifer learned in a NAMI Family to Family class. And Jennifer feels like she has a life again, “a life that is positive and wonderful,” because she has the resources she needs to support her on the journey with her daughter.

Jennifer’s journey from exhaustion and isolation to connection and hope mirrors the experience of individuals who find muchneeded resources, understanding, and above all—hope—through peer-facilitated NAMI support groups throughout Mecklenburg County. Meetings are offered separately for persons with mental health diagnoses and their caregivers, and specialized groups serve the mental health needs of specific communities, including suicide loss survivors, young mothers, neurodivergent individuals, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Group-based peer support such as Jennifer and others experience with NAMI Charlotte is widely recognized as a recovery-oriented and scalable complement to traditional mental health treatment. For family members like Jennifer, group-based support has been shown to reduce caregiver burden and improve family functioning, while individuals with mental health diagnoses report decreased feelings of isolation and stigma, increased hope, and improvements in self-efficacy and coping skills.

Based on her own experience, Jennifer has become a tireless advocate for the power of peer support to be a game changer in the lives of individuals and families impacted by mental illness. “What I always say to people who come to a support group is ‘Keep coming back.’ It really does help.”

Kyle Cusick similarly champions the power of peer support for persons like himself who have a mental health diagnosis. When he first walked into a NAMI support group more than 20 years ago, Kyle had survived two suicide attempts and recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “It was a dark time in my life. I was searching for a way forward. The support group was a place where I felt seen, understood, and less alone.” Hope for the future began to take hold, and Kyle found his path forward. Like Jennifer, he kept coming back. Recovery wasn’t a straight line. But it was possible, now that he had resources and understanding to support him on his journey.

Jennifer and Kyle never stopped showing up to NAMI, through the hardest moments and into recovery. And as their own strength grew, they felt called to give back, undergoing training to become support group facilitators themselves.

Jennifer is currently helping to start a new family support group in Matthews, while Kyle is one of NAMI Charlotte’s most seasoned and dedicated

peer support group leaders, co-leading both virtual meetings and a support group that meets monthly in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte.

Kyle notes that helping others isn’t just about giving back—it furthers his own healing as well. After his suicide attempts, there were times when Kyle would wake up and quietly wonder why he was still here and what his life was meant to be. Now, these questions have an answer. Each time he connects with someone in his group, he feels it: this is why. This is why he got up this morning. To sit in that circle, to listen, to share, and to help someone else feel a little less alone.

“Because of my own experience, I can sit with someone in their hardest moments and truly understand in a way that few people can. I offer not only empathy but authentic hope. Showing up month after month, I demonstrate what it can look like to live with and manage a mental health condition over time.”

Jennifer puts it this way: “NAMI saves lives. It makes our troubled lives more manageable and even happy, including when times are hard. No one is alone here.”

Central Lake Norman Golden Boys A JOURNEY OF FELLOWSHIP & FUN

Founded by senior men for senior men, the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys bring together around 500 local members in fellowship, friendship, and genuine camaraderie.

Created in the spring of 2002, a small group of men whose wives were members of the local women’s Newcomers Club unexpectedly found their niche.

“At that time, the women’s book club within the Newcomers group had just read John Adams by David McCullough, and were going to meet and review that book,” shares Roy Bergquist, the group’s first president. “I had also read John Adams and asked the host of the meeting if I could attend. While at first she agreed, she was later told I couldn’t participate since it was a women’s organization. As a result, I asked around 20

men who I had met through other activities to meet at a local restaurant to discuss forming our own men’s club. From that group, eight men volunteered to be part of the organizing committee, and about 30 men joined the club within the first few months.”

From 30 to approximately 500 active members today, Roy estimates over the years the club has positively touched the lives of close to 2,000 men — building lifelong friendships along the way.

“Four ‘interest groups’ were formed at the beginning, including book club, fishing, cards and bike riding,” Roy shares. “As the membership grew over the years, so did the number of interest groups.

Even though most of the membership is retired, this unique men’s social club now

offers 30 different interest groups covering a wide range of topics and activities.

“Many of us have moved to this area from the Northeast or upper Midwest to escape cold temperatures, and the lake is certainly a draw!” shares Gary Moore, past president of the group. “Like me, many of the guys didn’t know anyone when they moved here, and the Golden Boys has been a great way to make new friends.”

Ninety-nine percent of new members join from connections with “sponsors,” and Gary is a good example. He was first introduced by a neighbor, who invited him to attend one of the group’s well-known breakfast meeting socials. He joined that very same day.

HONEY LIME SOY MARINATED CHICKEN BOWL

As the days get warmer, I naturally start leaning toward lighter, healthier meals. This month, I’m sharing one of my go-to favorites: Honey Lime Soy Marinated Chicken.

Paired with rice and fresh vegetables, it’s always a hit. You can easily switch up the sides, but I usually love it with Asian-inspired green beans, zucchini, and marinated cucumbers.

Ingredients: CHICKEN + MARINADE

• 2 chicken breasts, butterflied

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 tablespoons honey

• 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons soy sauce

• Juice of 1 lime

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 1/2 tablespoon dried oregano

FOR SERVING

• Jasmine rice

• Fresh vegetables (green beans, zucchini, etc.)

ASIAN MARINATED CUCUMBERS

• 1 pack Persian cucumbers (about 5)

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil

• 3/4 tablespoon soy sauce

• 1/2 tablespoon sugar

• 3/4 tablespoon rice vinegar

• 1 tablespoon chili oil

• 1/2 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions:

1. MARINATE THE CHICKEN

• In a bowl, mix olive oil, honey, soy sauce, lime juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and oregano. Add chicken and marinate for at least a couple of hours, preferably overnight.

2. PREPARE THE CUCUMBERS (BEST IF DONE AHEAD)

• Slice cucumbers at an angle to your preferred thickness.

• Toss with salt and refrigerate for 20 minutes to draw out moisture.

• Drain and lightly rinse, then return to a bowl.

• Add sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, rice vinegar, chili oil, and sesame seeds. Stir to combine and refrigerate until ready to serve.

3. COOK THE RICE & VEGETABLES

• Prepare jasmine rice according to package instructions.

• Bring water to a boil and cook green beans until tender.

4. GRILL THE CHICKEN

• Preheat grill. Cook chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F, then remove and let rest (it will continue to cook slightly).

5. FINISH THE GREEN BEANS

• After boiling, sauté green beans in a skillet with a little sesame oil, soy sauce, chili oil, salt, and pepper until slightly charred.

6. ASSEMBLE

• Slice the rested chicken.

• Build your bowl with rice, vegetables, and chicken. Top with marinated cucumbers for a fresh, flavorful finish.

As part of its heartfelt mission to foster a love for the arts throughout the Lake Norman area, Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, NC, hosted a magical black-tie evening on May 1 — A Night on the Stage: An Evening of Giving.

Featuring fabulous food, entertainment, and live private performances, all proceeds from the evening will support the center’s efforts to provide exceptional visual arts, performing arts, and social experiences within the community.

Executive Director Justin A. Dionne shares how Cain Center’s community impact programs are nurturing neighbors in life-changing ways.

“Our journey in community impact began in 2018 with a simple but powerful idea: to bring the arts directly to our local schools and ignite creativity where it begins. Over the past eight years, that commitment has deepened and expanded into a growing network of community programs designed to serve and uplift the Lake Norman region. We believe the arts are not a luxury, but a vital part of a thriving community. By removing barriers to access, we strive to ensure that every individual, regardless of background, can experience the joy, connection, and transformative power of arts and culture.”

Community Music Lessons may be the most recognized way Cain Center spreads a love for the arts. The Community Music Program, in partnership with Learn Music, began in 2020 and offers local students ages seven to 18 the opportunity to receive lessons in voice, guitar, piano, or drums at no cost as part of a nine-month program. When the program ends, students who have completed all requirements

are able to keep their instrument—fostering a continued, and hopefully lifelong, learning experience.

Cain Center for the Arts also partners with Neighborhood Care Center in Cornelius, a faith-based nonprofit that provides resources not otherwise available to community members. Scholarships are offered to

Hinds’ Feet Farm in Huntersville, NC, is one of Cain Center’s partners, offering art therapy day programs for participants diagnosed with a TBI (traumatic brain injury) or an ABI (acquired brain injury).

“Our partnership with Hinds’ Feet Farm is rooted in the belief that the arts can be a powerful tool for healing, expression, and

If you’re looking for a summer camp experience focused on art education, you’ve chosen the right place to keep those creative juices flowing. With everything from bucket drumming to ukulele, ceramics, clay animation workshops, cartooning basics, and more, Cain Center offers creative camp opportunities for children and youth ages four and up. A variety of interests are included in this year’s exciting summer camp lineup, along with the convenience of weekly morning and afternoon sessions. Plus, around 10% of campers are typically eligible for scholarships.
