As I sit down to write this Publisher's Perspective, I find myself reflecting on a significant milestone in my life. In May of 1984, my husband and I got married! Fast forward 40 years, and here we are, living our best life and feeling blessed through the journey and all we have learned along the way.

With summer on the horizon, we can hardly wait for days filled with boating adventures, jet ski rides, paddle boarding, long walks, and simply being happy, healthy and enjoying the sunshine. What brings us the greatest joy is having more time with our children, their significant others, and grand pups for visits, complete with cookouts and lots of time spent out on the water. I'm especially grateful for Tanner's passion for grilling, it’s always a special treat!

In the pages of this issue, you'll find a ton of engaging, local content! We're thrilled to showcase Arden 55+ in Huntersville, a haven of comfort and community for your loved ones. Turn to page 28 to learn more about this beautiful community!

If you haven't yet discovered The Emerald Necklace, allow me to extend a personal invitation. Turn to page 36 - it's a must-add to your summer to-do list!

I also invite you to delve into the heartfelt story on page 24, "Family Ties," featuring the journey of Tina Carusillo and her loved ones. At LKN Magazine, we're committed to championing worthy causes, and I encourage each and every one of our readers to join us in supporting Tina's cause. Mental health awareness is a cause close to our hearts, as each of us has been touched by its challenges in some form. It's a reminder of the importance of education and support in navigating these struggles, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the Mental Health Association and the generous table sponsors for their unwavering commitment to aiding those in need. We pray that this organization will break all kinds of records this year and can make an impact on the mental health crisis in our community and beyond.

Before I sign off, I want to take a moment to wish a Happy Mother's Day to my sweet mama, a beacon of love, compassion, and strength in our lives. Through her unwavering devotion to her roles as LKN Ambassador, Deacon of her church, and the best mama and Mamaw...she fills our hearts with boundless love and admiration.

Wishing you a May full of days filled with laughter, love, and cherished moments with those who matter most. Here's to an amazing summer ahead!

MOTHER NURTURE INVESTING IN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THAT LAST A LIFETIME

I designed t-shirts for the kids this winter as we embarked on this business adventure. My oldest son calls them our “swag.” One of the shirts says, “We grow things. Curiosity. Vegetables. Humans.”

We (the kids and I) call the seedlings our babies.

We mother our baby plants. In the same way a mother gets excited when her child accomplishes something or learns a new skill, we get excited when our baby plants grow. I was recently equally saddened when something went wrong with my seedlings.

Me, texting my husband, after doing a deep dive on some of my seeds and their progress, “I have identified so many problems. I was filling

In trying to be a good mother, exposing my children to this huge new world of growing plants, I’m the one learning the most. Many years out of my own formal education, that’s currently my favorite part of this adventure. I crave garden knowledge and remain curious beyond my time capacity for curiosity. (I do also have a career in finance to focus on.) I’m learning how important the environment and care is for each of these plants. You need to follow the steps on the back of the seed package, but WOW, there is so much more to learn to be successful. Sure, seedlings need constant attention in the early stages, but they also need to be left alone to do their thing. I just transplanted many seedlings after this interesting step called “hardening off” where you set the seedlings outside for a few hours a day for a few days before being officially placed in the ground. Evidently, they need to experience “the real world” a little before they go out on their own. I hear a lot of “Mom, I’ve got it” these days. This “hardening off” step speaks to my soul as a mother in this helicopter mom world.

This garden is teaching my household so many real, beautiful lessons. Lessons of responsibility, curiosity and patience. We are responsible for how we care and feed these living things, just as we intentionally care and nourish ourselves. We remain curious, seeking answers to questions or in exploring new things. But above all, be patient, and allow the result of the hard work to bloom in its own time if we give each plant what it needs.

Caring for something beyond yourself finds its way back around and feeds each of us. Mothering is in our nature. This is loudly showing up in my young boys as our souls want to care for something. Nurturing gives us purpose. To the plant mothers, business mom-bosses and human mamas, Happy Mother’s Day. We’re all raising something; let’s make it count.

PEAR, PROSCIUTTO AND BLUE CHEESE CROSTINI

The drizzle of honey and saltiness from the blue cheese and prosciutto create the perfect sweet and salty flavor!

Servings: 24

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 5 minutes

Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1 baguette, sliced into 24 thin diagonal slices

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 2-3 pears, sliced into 24 thin slices

• 4 ounces prosciutto, very thinly sliced

• 4 ounces blue cheese

• Honey

• 4 thyme sprigs

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the slices of baguette on a baking sheet and lightly coat with olive oil. Sprinkle some salt on top. Bake for 3-4 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown and remove. The slices will start to get firm as they cool.

2. Cut the blue cheese into thin ½-inch pieces or into crumbles.

3. Cut the prosciutto into thin pieces (24 pieces) to drape over the baked baguette slices (crostini).

4. Layer the prosciutto, pear and blue cheese on each crostini. Drizzle honey over and garnish with a small piece of the thyme sprig. Enjoy!

Recipe Tips:

• For more flavor, put garlic or herbed salt on the baguette before baking instead of regular salt.

THE DOWNFALL OF A THROWAWAY SOCIETY

Thanks in part to mass production, the invention of plastic and the rise of disposable products, we have become a throwaway society. This bad consumer habit, where what is produced mostly ends up in the landfills, is driving the global crisis we face today. The average American dumps about 1,000 pounds of trash in the local landfill each year, and predictions are that, globally, we will reach 2.2 billion tons by 2025. One highly visible landfill contributor is the furniture industry. Americans buy an abundance of “fast furniture” – inexpensive, poor quality and easy to obtain and abandon. This “buy, toss, replace” furniture buying mindset has resulted in 12 million tons of furniture and upholstery fabrics getting dumped into landfills last year alone (EPA).

TEXTILE RECOVERY & RESALE

At Modern Fabrics, Co-owners Ewa and James Powell and Store Manager Debra Worthy are committed to providing customers high-quality designer textiles rescued from the cutting room floors of domestic luxury residential and commercial furniture factories. When the Powells opened their doors in 2007 as an online fabric reclamation business, they believed there was vast potential for textile recovery and resale, and they were right! The following year, they added a brick-and-mortar store and, over the years, their reach has been remarkable. From New York, Dallas and California to Italy, Denmark and Japan, they provide customers with fabulous fabrics and leathers from the most sought-after furniture companies. Ewa shares, “We step in between the manufacturer and the landfill – our business is literally built on waste. The numbers continue to rise, but we presently divert more than 15,000 pounds of designer fabric and leather each month, and then pass these amazing textiles on to our savvy, eco-conscious customers at discounted prices.”

“While we are a small mom-and-pop company, as we grow, we aim to lessen our impact on Mother Earth.”

REUPHOLSTER OR REPLACE?

Debra states, “We have many customers come into the store wanting to update their home and trying to decide if they should replace or reupholster Grandma’s old chair or their well-worn sofa.” The primary reason most furniture pieces are reupholstered is because people simply cannot imagine parting with them (e.g. fits the space perfectly, sentimental value, comfortable, love the style, family heirloom, etc.). In addition to the connection and comfort factors, there are a number of other important considerations in the reupholster-or-replace debate.

MODERN
FABRICS

• Construction: If it is “fast furniture,” it is most likely a lowquality product made with soft materials like plastic or particleboard and isn’t substantial enough for the reupholstery process. Higher quality pieces have a stable construction and are made of hardwood (e.g. ash, oak, maple, etc.), so giving them a facelift makes great financial sense. Simply put, Ewa notes, “Whether it is made in the US or abroad, the level of craftsmanship and quality of materials from decades past is almost always superior to furniture made today.”

• Cost: Individuals can quickly discern that the price they will pay for a quality piece of furniture in a retail store is greater than or equal to the price of the material and labor required to reupholster a beloved piece of (better) furniture. With a savings of 60-80% off list price ($24-$32 per yard) for top quality designer fabrics and leathers, the choice to give that mid-century modern armchair a makeover is an easy one.

• Customization: “When you reupholster, you get exactly what you want with premier quality textiles – ‘that’ couch with ‘that’ fabric will be unique,” Debra explains. Modern Fabrics contracts with various high-end furniture manufacturers across the US, and all of the sorting is done by Ewa on a weekly basis to ensure the textiles for online orders (kept in the warehouse), as well as inventory in the Huntersville store are the “best of the best.” Not only are the fabrics and leathers highly curated, they are also the same textiles currently seen in luxury lifestyle magazines. “Reupholstering allows customers to choose from thousands of options and mix textiles to customize pieces to fit their décor. For those who are overwhelmed by all of the choices, we are happy to help them pick out the perfect fabrics,” says Ewa.

• Convenience: After the fabric/leather decision has been made, the furniture is picked up from the customer’s home, sent for upcycling and, three weeks later, the reupholstered piece is delivered to the customer’s home. Ewa is proud of the fact that she has secured the best and most affordable upholsterers in the US and that they charge 1/3 of the average national price – she happily passes that savings along to her customers. The entire process is quick and hassle-free.

• Conscience: Modern Fabrics, an environmentally conscious “steward of exquisitely designed textiles” makes these otherwise discarded fabrics (frequently only offered to

designers and professionals) accessible to the public at very affordable prices. If you are thinking about updating your furniture, look no further than Modern Fabrics. You are guaranteed to love the results, AND you will feel great knowing you are contributing to a greener society. Bonus...it is easy on the pocketbook!

“Rather than manufacturing more and more, we want to encourage designers and DIYers to utilize existing sources of textiles before resorting to consuming more raw materials.”

BUILDING YOUR BEST LIFE

ARDEN 55+

Frank Lloyd Wright said, “The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes.” And, while this can most certainly be true, there is one caveat: “Futures don’t make themselves; you have to create them.” (Author Unknown). Healthy aging can be a beautiful time of continued growth in all aspects of life – physically, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually and socially. Studies demonstrate that lifestyle choices impact successful aging, and it is the mission of Arden at Huntersville to provide a space where 55 and better active adults can grow and flourish in a vibrant and welcoming community. The name “Arden” comes from the Latin phrase, “Great Forest” and, like a forest with its tremendous variety of flora and fauna, Arden at Huntersville prides itself on being inclusive and accessible with intentional “forest nods” to the brand at every turn. For example, the naming of amenity spaces like the “Green Room” (where residents come together to enjoy gatherings, celebration, events, clubs and each other’s company) symbolize new beginnings and growth. It’s Arden’s mission to let the residents shine. When doing so, our communities come to life. Our Green Room is named and dedicated to our residents because they are the stars of the show. Arden at Huntersville is dedicated to empowering residents’ lives through possibility – if they can dream it, Arden 55+ can make it happen. Empty-nesters, retirees and preretirees who are ready to start an exciting new chapter in life will find themselves surrounded by neighbors who share many of the same interests, activities and experiences...paving the way for wonderful friendships to blossom.

Continued on page 30.

Continued from page 29.

“STARTING FRESH AND EMBARKING ON NEW BEGINNINGS CAN BE LIBERATING REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU ARE IN LIFE – WITH THE RIGHT MINDSET AND DETERMINATION, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!”

Planned 55+ communities continue to grow in popularity, and industry experts anticipate this trend will persist as many of the nation’s 73 million baby boomers will be “on the move” over the next decade as they downsize, change geographic location, relocate to an active adult community, etc. The 2020 US Census Bureau revealed that older adults are projected to outnumber children under age 18 for the first time in US history by 2034. Think about that for a moment! By 2050, nearly onequarter of Americans will be 55 or older. The data clearly shows that one of the top reasons older adults are making the move to a 55+ active community is their desire for a streamlined, maintenance-free lifestyle and a sense of belonging that comes from living amongst others at the same life stage. Active seniors want a robust social life, and they enjoy having calendars full of enjoyable and exciting opportunities to experience in a safe and peaceful environment. Arden 55+ is committed to ensuring residents are involved and active while having fun! “Living your best life yet” is more than a slogan at Arden 55+ – it is at the core of their holistic approach to building an inclusive, innovative, active adult rental community that fosters a sense of community. With more than 8,000 square feet of amenity spaces, there is something for everyone!

A sample of the plentiful community amenities at Arden at Huntersville for value-seeking 55+ adults:

• On-site fitness center

• Outdoor saltwater pool

“CREATE SOMETHING, JOIN SOMETHING, BE SOMETHING AND DO SOMETHING, ALL AT ARDEN AT HUNTERSVILLE.”

relationships and find fulfillment in all they do.” Exceptional customer service and a laser focus on building community is what sets Arden at Huntersville apart from the rest. Call today for an appointment and experience the difference yourself!

“AT ARDEN AT HUNTERSVILLE, WE ARE MORE THAN A BUILDING TO LIVE IN – THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT BREATHES THROUGH THE WALLS AS SOON AS YOU ENTER.”

NAHLEENA RYAN, REGIONAL MANAGER

Arden 55+ boasts 129 single level apartment homes with a variety of one- and two-bedroom floor plans to choose from – all with an open concept and intentionally designed interiors. When you step across the threshold, it is immediately obvious that the kitchen is ideally situated. In this highly digital era, studies have shown that people crave a break from screen time in exchange for present-moment awareness and more face-to-face time with others. The “new living room” provides a space to step away from electronic media and, according to the experts, time spent in the kitchen is good for overall physical, mental and emotional health. And, because food and conversation go together, the revival of the kitchen as the heart of the home is more than just a nostalgic nod to the past – it is a research-backed “must.” The large adjacent living area ensures there is plenty of room for gathering with family and friends for game night, special occasions, dinner parties, etc. Arden 55+ sought suggestions from a focus group to ascertain the most important community

amenities to include and, likewise, valuable input was collected regarding home interior amenities as well.

A sample of the many thoughtfully incorporated amenities are:

• Kitchen islands*

• Stainless steel appliances

• Granite countertops

• Shaker-style cabinetry

• Expansive closet space

• Pantry and linen closets*

• Seats in every shower

• Double vanities*

• Soaking tub in secondary bathrooms

• Washer and dryer included

• Plush carpet in bedrooms

• Patios and balconies

“WE ARE A NEW COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVE FOR 55+ ACTIVE ADULTS.”

A BOW OF GALLANTRY

In the first edition of A Bow of Gallantry, I addressed the topic of having your own “personal style,” but since then, I have inadvertently ignored that particular subject. This is not in relation to its importance; rather that I, like many others in the clothing industry, tend to focus on mainstays of the wardrobe and getting people to dress better overall instead of developing or pushing the boundaries of their personal style. We all have our favorite articles of clothing; personally, sportcoats top the list due to the versatility and individuality which can be expressed with them; the different colors, patterns, and fabric blends create nearly endless possibilities and significant visual interest. A great coat is an easy way to enhance an otherwise casual outfit or add some flair to a trouser and dress shirt, but let’s not forget where you can truly insert fun and individualism into your ensembles: the accessories.

When was the last time you took pride in your shoes, belt and buckle, watch, cuff links, neckwear, pocket square, or any of the various accessories designed to accentuate your style? Women do this constantly with bags, belts, scarves, and jewelry… Look at the emphasis they put on these adornments; much of the time, they end up being the outfit while the clothing itself is simply a base. The voguish man follows suit. I am an avid proponent of complementary efforts between men and women when out together. The lady, of course, will be the main attraction, but the man shouldn’t look disheveled while she is elegant. Ask your wife or girlfriend… I can assure you: she notices.

The welcome resurgence of men caring about their appearances has caused this category to grow exponentially. No longer do your accessories need to be basic and boring… a truly unique item or style can even be a conversationstarter with a random stranger; this has happened to me numerous times. Unsure of where to start building your collection? The options are truly endless, especially when factoring in custom items…

• Belts in sophisticated exotic skins and hand-finished leathers by LEN Lifestyle

• Silver buckles, money clips, bracelets, and cufflinks by Clint Orms Silversmiths & Engravers

• Exotic knives, pens, and bracelets by William Henry

• A simple and versatile dress watch by a reputable manufacturer

• Ties and Pocket Squares by Seaward & Stearn; Neckerchiefs by Ruth Graves Designs

Aside from the aesthetic benefits of accessorizing well, several of these items are eternal in durability and style, and they will gain significant sentimental value when passed down as heirlooms. What would it mean to you to receive your father’s or grandfather’s alligator belt and monogrammed silver buckle or money clip? These investment pieces are the perfect additions for enhancing and expanding your personal style as well as ensuring that your legacy carries on for

generations to come. They also make incredible gifts… Graduation and Father’s Day are right around the corner!

While the mainstays and necessities are always important, equally so is your individuality and the pieces you use to embrace it. After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

THE NEVER-ENDING PURSUIT OF MONEY

What would it be like to be ultra wealthy? Would it mean homes in Hawaii and Paris? Do you envision sailing a luxury yacht across the Mediterranean? What about chartering a trip to space? While it is fun to imagine, this is not the reality for most of us.

You might have heard the term “Ultra High Net Worth” (UHNW) before. It is a term for those who have north of $30 million in net worth. There are currently 142,990 UHNW individuals in North America1 out of 369 million in total2. That is less than one-tenth of 1% (.03% to be exact).

There simply are not that many people flying private, sitting front row at sporting events or buying private islands…contrary to what we see on TV or in social media. So, why do we sometimes feel the desire for more, even though we are doing just fine financially?

The mindset of accumulating wealth is deeply ingrained in most of our psyches. It is important in the sense that we all have goals and want to retire comfortably, but it can be dangerous in its extremes. Let us take a moment to understand some of the psychology behind why this happens:

• Social Conditioning: From a young age, we are bombarded with messages that equate success with material wealth. This fosters a mindset where financial achievement is seen as the ultimate marker of success.

• Comparison Culture: Social media and the digital age have amplified our exposure to the lives of the affluent, often presenting a skewed reality that glamorizes wealth and luxury. This constant comparison feeds into the desire for more.

• Economic Insecurity: For some, the pursuit of wealth stems from a place of economic insecurity during their upbringing. This drive, while initially motivated by a quest for stability, can evolve into an endless chase for more.

• The Illusion of Happiness: There is a widespread misconception that more money directly correlates with more happiness. This can lead people to prioritize wealth accumulation, often at the expense of other aspects of well-being.

• Fear of Missing Out (FOMO): Witnessing peers or counterparts achieve financial milestones can trigger a sense of FOMO,

propelling the urge to amass wealth in order to not feel left behind.

• Seeking Validation: Accumulating wealth is often viewed as a means of garnering respect, admiration and validation from others. This external affirmation becomes a driving force, overshadowing intrinsic motivations and self-worth.

• The Hedonic Treadmill: As people acquire more wealth, their expectations and desires adjust upward. For example, it might have once felt aspirational to sit in first class, but having experienced that many times, you set your sights on flying private.

You have probably heard that additional wealth does not equate to increased happiness. It is so true, but we can all use a reminder from time to time. The same holds true for habits that help us practice contentment. Here are a few to get you started:

• Cultivate Gratitude: Regularly acknowledging what you are thankful for can shift your focus from what is missing to what is present.

• Embrace Simplicity: Simplifying your life can help clarify what truly matters, reducing the noise of material desires and fostering a deeper appreciation for the essentials.

• Invest in Relationships: Strong connections with family and friends are a cornerstone of happiness. Invest time and energy in nurturing these bonds.

• Pursue Passion: Engaging in activities that resonate with your interests and values brings intrinsic joy and satisfaction.

• Give Back: Contributing to the wellbeing of others through acts of kindness, volunteering or philanthropy can provide a sense of purpose and happiness.

As we navigate our financial journeys, it is vital to remember that the true essence of wealth lies in well-being, not in the endless accumulation of money. The moments of connection, the pursuit of passions and the acts of generosity are what truly enrich our lives. By finding contentment in what we have and who we are, we can escape the neverending pursuit of money and embrace a life filled with genuine happiness and fulfillment.

“As we navigate our financial journeys, it is vital to remember that the true essence of wealth lies in well-being, not in the endless accumulation of money.”

THE GEM IN OUR OWN BACKYARD:

EXPLORING THE EMERALD NECKLACE

Has the “beaten path” of crowded roads and traffic lights started to get to you? Good News: There is an easy way to get off the beaten path without leaving town. The Emerald Necklace is a greenway and trail network with a footprint in Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville. When complete, it will run 13 miles and connect to multiple local parks and commercial centers. With just two sections left to complete the loop, this local gem is ready and waiting for you to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life – no plane ticket or road trip required.

“The Cornelius greenway system connects people from where they live to where they work, recreate and congregate,” said Cornelius Parks and Recreation Director Troy Fitzsimmons, who reports that the project is 77% complete.

LINK BY LINK

Greenways are all about connections – between neighborhoods, parks and businesses. As it turns

out, building a greenway is no different. It’s all about connecting various sources of support with a vision and then turning it into a reality. Link by link, the Emerald Necklace has grown in length thanks to support from the Towns of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville, the NC Department of Transportation, Mecklenburg County and the Carolina Thread Trail.

Cornelius Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Scott Higgins reports that an important planned greenway section and linear park in the Smithville to J.V. Washam Elementary School sector is back on track to be built, thanks to renewed funding and county support. A planned multi-use path across Westmoreland Bridge over Interstate 77 is also in the works, as well as a connector greenway between the Northern Regional Recreation Center and the Caldwell Station Creek Greenway.

“These greenway additions will be extremely valuable for those users that now find commuting across town problematic,” said Higgins.

A WAY TO UNWIND

We know the many physical and emotional benefits of being active and getting outside in green spaces, but it’s not always easy to carve out enough time for a camping trip or even a day hike. Greenway systems like the Emerald Necklace are literally in our own backyard, making it much easier to build a refreshing bike ride or midday walk into our busy schedules.

Plus, the Emerald Necklace winds its way around several havens for foodies, craft beer aficionados and boutique fans. Now you can easily get to your favorite spots and feel great about how you got there.

EAT, PLAY, SHOP

The Emerald Necklace is open to walkers, runners and cyclists (including electric bikes). Commercial centers that are currently connected include Antiquity Shopping Center and Magnolia Plaza in Cornelius and Birkdale Village in Huntersville. Downtown Davidson is easily accessible from the Emerald Necklace, as well as Birkdale Landing and Northcross Shopping Center in Huntersville.

The small business community in our Lake Norman towns is just as much of a gem as the Emerald Necklace. Whether you’re looking for the perfect ensemble at a local boutique, craving some fresh sashimi or ready to catch the latest movie on the big screen, you can do it all while enjoying the Emerald Necklace along the way.

For a map of the Emerald Necklace, visit Cornelius. org/park or get a paper map at the Cornelius Office of Parks and Recreation, 21445 Catawba Avenue or the Lake Norman Visitors Center, 19900 West Catawba Avenue, Suite 102 in Cornelius.

MIXING DIFFERENT DESIGN STYLES TO CREATE A UNIQUE AND PERSONAL HOME EMBRACING ECLECTICISM:

If you’re anything like me, you understand the struggle of committing to just one favorite design style. I adore the sleekness of modern lines combined with the warmth of vintage textures, the iconic mid-century modern accents and a touch of traditional flair. Design styles are not one-size-fits-all, and neither is your home. I revel in the diversity of styles, yearn to mix and match with boundless creativity and strive to curate a space that encapsulates my eclectic taste.

Gone are the days of matching furniture sets and strict adherence to one design style. Today, homeowners are embracing the mix-and-match approach, where midcentury modern chairs cozy up next to a bohemian rug, or a sleek industrial coffee table is paired with a traditional Persian carpet. The result? A curated and creative space that is uniquely yours.

The key to successful eclectic design lies in the art of balance and cohesion. While it may seem chaotic to combine elements from various styles, there are some principles to keep in mind to achieve a harmonious look. Here are five ways to craft a cohesive and eclectic space.

1. Color Palette Cohesion

Start by selecting a cohesive color palette that ties the different pieces together. Whether you opt for a monochromatic scheme or a complementary mix of hues, having a consistent color theme will create a sense of unity in the room. I personally like to start with a neutral base. A warm white wall is the perfect versatile backdrop for incorporating a mix of styles and colors.

2. Mix Different Furniture Styles

Combine different furniture styles such as a modern sofa with vintage chairs or a traditional coffee table with contemporary bookshelves. A plush velvet sofa can be juxtaposed with a rustic wooden coffee table; while a sleek metal lamp adds a touch of modernity to a vintage-inspired space. The pairing of contrasting furniture styles is a sure way to craft an eclectic space.

3. Play with Patterns and Textures

Introduce an array of patterns and textures through throw pillows, rugs, curtains

and artwork. Mixing floral prints with geometric patterns or velvet textures with woven materials adds depth and visual interest to the room.

4. Curate a Gallery Wall

Create a gallery wall featuring an eclectic mix of artwork, photographs and mirrors in varying sizes and frames. Blend a contemporary piece with a traditional floral print or ornate mirror. Mixing different artwork styles allows you to showcase your personality and create a space that tells a story about who you are.

5. Add Personal Touches

Infuse the room with personal touches that reflect your individuality and experiences. Incorporate your favorite vintage vase from a flea market or a modern sculpture you got at your local retail shop. Family heirlooms and travel souvenirs mixed and matched within your space make a home feel like yours.

Eclectic design is about celebrating the beauty of diversity and creating a home that is as unique and multifaceted as you are. By mixing different design styles, textures and colors, you can transform your space into a visually stunning and personality-filled oasis. So go ahead, embrace eclecticism, and let your home be a true expression of who you are.

Remember, there are no wrong answers in eclectic design – only endless possibilities and the freedom to express yourself. So dare to mix, match and create a space that is uniquely yours.

Until next time, Cheri

AURORA FLORA

WE ALL CRAVE A MOMENT OF PEACE. BETWEEN JUGGLING OUR KIDS’ SOCCER PRACTICES, DANCE REHEARSALS, AND PTO MEETINGS, WE’RE LUCKY IF WE TAKE ANY TIME FOR OURSELVES.

Five years ago, as a lonely young mom lost in the grind, I began searching for ways to feel connection and peace in my otherwise chaotic world. One fateful day, I discovered specialty cut flowers could be grown from seed and not just any flowers. These were flowers beyond the roses, mums and baby’s breath typically found in the grocery store.

That summer, I bought three little packets of flower seeds to experiment growing with my children. Miracle of miracles, our seeds sprouted and grew! That summer, my kids and I cut bouquets for friends and neighbors, and my life was, in the literal sense, changed forever.

Truly, nothing compared to seeing the joy on friends’ faces when presented with our homegrown blooms. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about growing pretty flowers anymore.

My hobby for growing beautiful cut flowers turned into passion bordering obsession, and together with my family, we created Aurora Flora U-Pick Flower Farm.

We’ve only been in business for one year, and the best part has been seeing loved ones gather together in a moment of peace, finding connection in a beautifully curated place. I love seeing couples hold hands while they pick a bouquet, mothers and daughters strolling among the blooms and best friends taking a much deserved ladies night, snapping selfies among the wildflowers.

Aurora Flora is certainly different from other local farms. I had never grown a thing before discovering cut flowers, which makes us the opposite of a multi-generational farm that has teams of employees and heavy machinery and equipment. We are small and quaint, growing everything with our hands on our small plot of land.

We grow flowers in all colors, shapes and sizes. Zinnias, snapdragons, cosmos and celosia are fan favorites. We plant more than 300 sunflowers every week because almost every customer leaves with at least one in their cup. New to us this year are dahlias, which are a cottage garden favorite, and those you definitely never find in a grocery store.

Creating this uniquely beautiful space has been a dream come true. Providing flowers for others’ special occasions and for the everyday moments has been an honor. While many see flowers as a non-necessity and something “extra,” I see them as a way to say “I love you. I honor you. I see you.”

Flowers are more than just beautiful, they are a life force.

The U-pick garden opens after Mother’s Day and is open for picking most weekends May through September. Reservations are required to be sure that there are plenty of blooms to choose from and so that it’s never too crowded. Reservations can be made on our website at auroraflora.net. You don’t have to bring a thing, we provide your cup with water and the flower snips so that you can snip until your cup is full! You can also email devery@auroraflora.net for more information!

Dear Mom,

From the countless sacrifices you've made to ensure my well being and happiness to the unwavering encouragement you provide in all of my endeavors; your comforting presence in my life is truly a blessing beyond words. Your selflessness knows no bounds, and your strength inspires me daily to strive for the best version of myself. Every day, I cherish the memories; from cleaning consistently scraped knees and helping me plan my wedding to watching you with your grandkids. The ups and downs, the lessons and learnings, you have been there through it all, and the appreciation that we do show is never enough.

Love,Lindsey

Dear Moms, Grandmothers, Great Grandmas, Moms in Heaven and Moms We Have Lost Too Soon,

We see you. We feel you. We hear you.

You have made an everlasting imprint in our lives and on our hearts. We recognize that you have done your absolute best with all that you have. We thank you for shaping our world.

In this world that often undervalues the work of mothers, it's essential to recognize the immense significance of your contributions. Whether you work outside the home or have dedicated yourself to full time caregiving, you have played an indispensable role in shaping the future and enriching the lives of not only us (your children), but your tribe of women and those around you, as well.

Dear Kids,

From the moment you came into my life, you brought a depth of love that I never knew was possible. The joy of watching you grow, learn and discover the world around you has been the greatest gift I could ever receive. You have filled my days with laughter, my heart with pride and my soul with an unending purpose.

Every smile, every hug and every "I love you, Mom" reminds me of the incredible blessing it is to be your mother. Your kindness, energy and spirit inspire me each day to be the best version of myself and to cherish every moment we share together.

As I look back on the memories we've created, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and thank God for granting me the privilege of being your mom. You have taught me the true meaning of unconditional love, patience and selflessness.

Keep being the shining light to the world around you.

Love, Mom

The legacy of strong moms traces back through the history of time, with countless examples of maternal resilience and fortitude. In ancient civilizations, mothers were revered as goddesses, symbols of fertility, protection and nurturing. Demonstrated maternal strength has been a central theme in mythology and religious traditions.

Your tireless efforts from the late night feedings to the countless sacrifices made for your family’s happiness and well being is the utmost definition of resilience.

You have worn all of the hats. From COO to taxi driver, from nurse to chef, you do it all. Today, we celebrate you and want you to know that if one of your hats is a little crooked, it is okay to take it off. You deserve to be celebrated, honored and over appreciated for all that you do. Take a breath today and just recognize the bad a$$ mother that you are.

With love, All Moms Everywhere

Throughout history, mothers have shouldered immense burdens, facing adversity with grace and determination. Whether tending to their families on the homesteads of early America, leading revolutions for social justice or navigating the complexities of modern life, mothers have been the bedrock of strength and stability in times of upheaval and uncertainty.

Moreover, mothers have and continue to possess an innate ability to multitask, juggling a myriad of responsibilities with finesse and grace. Their unwavering dedication and selflessness serve as a beacon of inspiration for all.

This month, take the time to celebrate the strength, resilience and boundless love of mothers everywhere. From the dawn of civilization to the present day, mothers have been the unsung heroes of humanity, embodying the true essence of strength and sacrifice. Let us honor their legacy and express our heartfelt appreciation for all that they do. Happy Mother's Day!

SMOKED PORK BELLY

This recipe is one that was all over the internet not too long ago, and I was late to the game on trying out. It turned out to be amazing and is probably my favorite meat I’ve ever smoked!

Instead of cubing up a pork belly slab like you typically would for some pork belly burnt ends, we just cut it into two even slices – to speed up the process and let it cook more evenly. Just like you would for a brisket, we cooked it all the way to an internal temperature of around 197-203°. You can find these pork belly slabs at Food Lion in their smoking meat cooler – and for around $20-27, they are awesome!

Ingredients:

• 1 pork belly slab

• Meat Church Holy Cow BBQ seasoning (or your favorite BBQ rub, a simple salt pepper garlic works, as well)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the smoker to 250°.

2. Slice pork belly slab in half – or four sections if you have a larger piece. I typically get the Swift pork belly from Food Lion which is perfect to just slice in half.

3. Trim any uneven edges or ridges that are too tall or thin to make for an even cook.

4. Season all over with BBQ seasoning –let the seasoning stick to the meat for 15 minutes or so before throwing it in the smoker.

5. Place on the preheated smoker and let it go for an hour or two, then you’ll want to spritz it a couple of times with some ACV/water mixture.

6. Keep it on the smoker, checking periodically until it feels incredibly tender and a temperature probe slides in like warm butter. This usually happens around 195-200° internal, but you can bring this cut up to even 205-210°.

7. Once you reach that desired tenderness/temperature, pull it off the smoker and let it rest/cool down. I do this by wrapping it in butcher paper and then wrapping a towel around and placing it in a cooler.

8. You can let something like this rest for an hour or so while you get the rest of your food ready. After resting, I slice it up into thin long slices that look like brisket, then place on a charred tortilla with some taco toppings!

A LEGACY OF FAMILY, QUALITY AND COMMUNITY

Nestled in the heart of Lincolnton, North Carolina is a cherished institution that stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of family, hard work and dedication. For more than six decades, the family owned Carolina Furniture Mart has been a cornerstone of the community. “We’ve served more than three generations of families with quality furniture and unparalleled service,” said Owner Bud Boyles.

Boyles has spent a lifetime in the furniture business. He got his start when he was just 18 years old. The youngest of 10 siblings, Bud grew up on a farm in Lincoln County. He spent 12 years learning the business from the original owner of Carolina Furniture Mart before venturing out on his own. “I had a store in Hickory, known then as the Furniture Capital of the World, but Lincolnton has always been home,” Boyles said.

He eventually bought the Carolina Furniture Mart from the original owner’s grandson. Today, at 82 years old, he resides just a quarter of a mile from his childhood home. Bud and his wife, Pat, still pour their heart and soul into the business, working tirelessly six days a week. Their passion for helping people and their love for the furniture industry are the driving forces behind their enduring success.

Carolina Furniture Mart boasts an impressive 80,000-square-foot showroom, offering a diverse selection of furniture with more than 70 lines to choose from. One of its distinguishing features is its collection of high-end design accent pieces at bargain prices. Unlike many other furniture stores, Carolina Furniture Mart prides itself on its ability to deliver quality products without the hassle of lengthy waiting periods.

Longtime clients David and Phyllis McConnell say the customer service is only part of the reason they keep coming back. “Carolina Furniture Mart is all about family,” said David. “They have the best prices without sacrificing quality. If they don’t have what we are looking for in the showroom, they will find it. In one of our houses, they furnished everything except the flat-screen TV.”

Carolina Furniture Mart has achieved a delicate balance, managing to stay relevant and provide contemporary styles even as it continues to embrace the good old-fashioned values that Bud Boyles used to build the company.

“They go beyond the norm to help me and my clients with their furniture needs,” said Interior Designer Gail Beaver. “I can always count on their knowledge and support in finding

what I need to order for any budget. And, their delivery staff is the best. They know how to handle furniture, and you couldn’t find a more courteous group of guys.”

In an era where more people crave purpose in what they buy and where they work, Carolina Furniture Mart provides for both customers and employees. Some staff members have been with them for more than 25 years, a reflection of the nurturing and supportive work environment they have cultivated.

While other furniture retailers have struggled to maintain success, the Boyles’ family legacy continues to thrive. The Boyles’ sons, Stuart and David, now lead the family business alongside their parents. All four grandchildren have worked at the store, with one now employed full-time and another lending a hand on Saturdays.

For the Boyles family, Carolina Furniture Mart is more than just a place of business – it’s a labor of love, proof of their unwavering commitment to each other and their community.

JUELERYE

PROUDLY SHARING THE KENT STETSON COLLECTION

Step into downtown Mooresville and uncover Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts – a haven where passion, creativity and, above all, joy infuses every corner. From the moment you arrive, you’re embraced by an infectious sense of joy that begs to be shared. More than just a destination – it’s a cherished secret you eagerly pass on to friends, knowing they’ll spread the joy, creating a ripple effect of happiness throughout the community and beyond.

“We are driven by meaningful relationships – with both our artists and clients,” says Gallery Owner Jacqueline Bassett. “When it comes to finding new artists for the store, I always strive to discover unique, handmade pieces that resonate with our customers and complement our existing offerings. That’s why I spend significant time researching and reaching out to new artisans.”

When she first discovered the Kent Stetson collection, Jacqueline immediately saw fantastic gifts and fun conversation starters that could pair with any outfit! “Kent’s work immediately caught my eye when I discovered him through social media. His commitment to handmade, eco-friendly designs made in the USA aligned perfectly with what we look for, and I knew his pieces would tie in beautifully with our store’s aesthetic.”

Jacqueline was drawn to the whimsical touch Kent brings to his designs and was thrilled when he reached out earlier this year and offered to do a trunk show at the store. She knows – from personal experience – clients will fall in love with his collection when they join the boutique for a Kent Stetson Trunk Show on Saturday, May 18th from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., with a preview on Friday, May 17th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

“For example, when I discovered his handbag featuring a rubber duck, I knew it was the perfect gift for my friend who adores her Jeep and the quirky culture surrounding it,” Jacqueline adds. “When another friend – a lover of shoes and wine – celebrated her 60th birthday, Kent’s clutch featuring a white wine design and 3D cork was an absolute hit!”

Each bag is handmade from Kent’s Rhode Island studio, where he sews and crafts each piece, finishing with his signature.

“I started this line in 2003 after discovering that my paintings sold really well when I cut them up and sewed them into bags,” shares Kent. “From there,

– ARTISAN GALLERY & GIFTS

we started incorporating photos and various themes, and we now have a unique and fun ‘going out’ bag that corresponds to clients’ favorite things and will beckon your tribe and prompt conversations around the things that interest you.”

The line has developed a worldwide following of collectors, some with as many as 100 pieces in their own private collection.

“I sell to a few hundred boutique, resort and museum stores throughout the world, and we only partner with those who can tell the true story of my collection! We don’t sell on Amazon or to big chain stores, working exclusively with boutique businesses, and we avoid selling to multiple stores near each other. Juelerye has a beautifully curated selection of fine American handcraft, so their team really understands how to stage my collection in a way that respects how special it is.”

Kent says when he’s doing his best work, he likes to think he’s channeling the person who will use the piece.

“I want someone to feel the bag was made just for them, so I look for themes, motifs and patterns that aren’t already in the collection. We can also do something personal with someone’s own photograph – a dog or a favorite place, for example – as the origin point of the design.”

Kent Stetson creations are instantly recognizable with their distinctive envelope shape, saturated color and often, a 3D element attached to the bag, which has become Kent’s signature.

“Our customers have a discerning eye for handbags, and this one is its own style,” he adds. “I believe our pieces are a wardrobe staple that belong in everyone’s closet — to make a simple outing or a more formal event just a little more special!”

Experience the joy of Juelerye for yourself by visiting them at 112 South Main Street in Mooresville.

Mark your calendar for the upcoming Kent Stetson trunk show on Saturday, May 18th from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., with a preview on Friday, May 17th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Can’t make it to the event? No problem! BRIGHTER SMILES – BRIGHTER YOU

What’s in a smile? As it turns out, quite a lot! Your face is one of the first things people notice about you, and a gorgeous smile can make a big impact. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 92% of adults agree that an attractive smile is important, but only 50% of Americans say they are satisfied with their smile. The lack of “smiling confidence” can be due to a number of factors, but teeth discoloration is the most frequently reported reason. Because a smile showing off those bright, pearly whites is so important, it comes as no surprise that professional teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure in the US today.

There are many professional teeth whitening options available in the Lake Norman and Greater Charlotte communities, but there is one that stands out above the rest – Brighter Smiles of Davidson. Owner Jasmine Egovail knows the power of a brilliant smile and is passionate about helping others present their very best selves to the world. Brighter Smiles is a BBB accredited business and boasts a Google 5-star rating. Although the industry does not require licensure, Jasmine sought out and obtained professional certification and training from the very best, Dr. Catrise Austin (“nationally renowned dentist to the stars”) to provide clients with confidence in the outcome of their whitening sessions.

AFFORDABLE

Because of the effectiveness of the teeth whitening procedure, the cost is considerably less than Jasmine’s direct competitors in the area. A typical “maximum solution concentration” session elsewhere is 20-30 minutes in length and costs $150-190. At Brighter Smiles, the 60-minute teeth whitening session is only

$170 – 1/3 the price others charge for the same amount of treatment time. For those who want a more gentle and gradual treatment, the cost is $120. Jasmine offers a desensitizing gel that helps to strengthen enamel and numb teeth for clients who want an extra pain-free level of assurance.

My teeth were looking yellow from coffee and tea, and I was over it. It was $500 at my dentist office, so I saved a lot of money and got phenomenal results! ~ VICTORIA G.

EFFICIENT

Jasmine’s clients see the same results in a single, 60-minute session as they would after two to three sessions at other locations. The difference lies in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide used at Brighter Smiles. Another layer of efficiency lies in the number of whitening stations in the studio. With three chairs, Jasmine is able to provide treatments to multiple clients at one time.

I am so very pleased with my results from Brighter Smiles. Jasmine is organized, efficient and kept me informed during the entire process. ~ KELSEY G.

EFFECTIVE

All of the high-quality whitening treatment products are made in the US and are FDA approved to be safe for tooth enamel. Depending on the age of the client and the condition of the teeth, it is possible to take 10-15 years of staining off in a single session! The timeframe between initial treatment and touch-ups varies according to individual circumstances (e.g. oral hygiene, diet, black coffee, red wine, nicotine, etc.), but the norm is six months.

Jasmine transformed my teeth to gorgeous pearly whites! She was top-notch when it came to service, attention to detail and overall determination for outstanding results! ~ CARMEN C.

COMFORTABLE

Upon entry, clients receive a warm welcome by Jasmine as they are ushered into the studio which exudes an atmosphere of calm and restoration. Clients relax as they listen to music or watch a favorite show under the LED lights; helping the time pass very quickly. The studio is not the only comfortable aspect of Brighter Smiles of Davidson – the new membership payby-the-month program is easy on the wallet, as well!

“Her space is absolutely adorable, and it was the most comfortable I’ve been during a teeth whitening experience! Watched some ‘House Hunters’ and, before I knew it, my 60 minutes was up!” ~ TAYLOR H.

ACCESSIBLE

Brighter Smiles is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday, by appointment

only. The mobile service grassroots beginnings of Brighter Smiles continue today. Jasmine understands it is a challenge for some of her clients to find time to come to the studio, so she continues to make house calls on Fridays. For a small travel surcharge, Jasmine happily “takes the show on the road” to client’s homes, businesses and whitening parties of all kinds: birthday, bachelorette party, college reunion, ladies’ night out, etc. Bonus – host a whitening party with five or more paid treatments, and the host’s whitening treatment is free!

I bring all of the equipment to wherever clients are. All they need to provide is an outlet.

As the oldest United Aqua Group builder in the area, they specialize in designing and building spectacular swimming pools that are easy to maintain. Aloha Pools is here for the lifetime journey of your pool, including equipment servicing and renovation. Referral-based and customer-driven, Aloha Pools can enhance your backyard space with free form and geometric style swimming pools, along with spas.

As the first step, you’ll engage in a phone call with a member of the design team, to reflect on exactly what you’re looking for, a basic timeline of construction, and to schedule the design appointment.

“During that meeting, our designer covers necessary space requirements, land restrictions, elevation challenges, custom material selections and specific client wishes,” said Megan Bowling, sales manager. “We base the shape and size of the pool on what will fit the client’s vision, the overall look of the home and the elevations and drainage requirements of the lot. Our end goal is for the pool to appear seamless with the surroundings and the rest of the home.”

The Aloha team can also design and create your outdoor kitchen or fire features – everything needed for the ultimate entertaining experience at home. Aloha Pools is always open to a client’s creative ideas! The design of your project is highly customizable, offering you an array of options to choose from in terms of size, shape, depth, aesthetics and specialty features. To enhance your swimming pool you might consider luxury additions such as custom lighting, salt water purification, custom water features and more.

Business success always depends on multiple factors, and the reputation of Aloha Pools has been founded on moral and ethical standards that set them apart. Aloha Pools understands the greater Charlotte area is a big city, but a small community, and word of mouth has power.

The team believes each experience should be the best it can be. It’s no secret pool construction can be a trying time – and often messy. Aloha strives to communicate and move through the process as quickly as possible, without sacrificing quality. Aloha Pools will be available to answer questions and lend a helping hand after your pool construction is completed.

“We know most clients have been dreaming of this pool their entire lives,” said Megan. “From service calls to high end builds,

you’ll receive the same professionalism and quality. That lets us focus on the needs of each individual – and not simply producing a certain number of pools. It has never been about how many pools, it has always been about the quality of your pool.”

You can be sure the Aloha Pools tradition of excellence will continue, as the management team trains a new generation of pool builders – using the successful lessons learned through their business model – and adding the bonus of new energy and technology!

“Best thing about Aloha by far is the customer service. They are extremely responsive and answered all my questions during the installation process. I love that, when calling, I speak to someone directly in the office without having to go through a menu. It feels like a small business who cares about their customers, and I’ve recommended them to multiple friends. I did not feel any pressure to be upsold during the process, and I highly recommend this business.”

“I could not be more pleased with our results. From planning to construction to the finished product, they addressed all of our questions and brought the vision to reality. Top quality, beautiful result. Thanks, Aloha Pools!”

A SOUTHERN GARDEN, for THE LAZY (OR BUSY!) GARDENER

Now is a great time to get out there and get your hands in the dirt! It’s the ideal time to plant because the frosty mornings have usually gone, and it’s a month or two before it becomes scorching hot. If you’re anything like me, a truly lazy gardener, the best plants to plant are those that do not need a ton of upkeep and tend to thrive in the southern sun all on their own.

For beds located in full sun or full afternoon sun, there are a few trees and flowering plants that will grow into a beautiful array of colors without being high maintenance. Many of these you will also spot along the highways of North Carolina. Just think, no one is babying these plants after they have been planted, right? We don’t see teams of state workers along the highways every year watering, trimming, and cleaning up the planted beds. They thrive on their own and for the lazy (or too busy, if that sounds better in your mind) gardener, those are the plants we need.

Daylilies are a fantastic choice. They come in all sorts of colors ranging from deep burgundy to the peachiest of peaches –something for every person’s color palette. They can be tall or short in stature so there’s room to layer them and still have plenty of variation. They have enough greenery to spread around so they are a great choice when you have space to fill up. Daylilies are perennials, so they keep coming back and providing a punch of color year after year. They take on full summer sun and do well with the watering time that mother nature provides. They are hardy enough to be split up after a few years of maturing, so they make a great plant to pass on to family and friends. I have daylilies that are over 60 years old from generations passed down.

Crepe Myrtle trees or shrubs are also sun loving, low maintenance plants that offer color and height variety. The trees are often shaped prior to purchase so there’s little trimming that’s required up front. However, to keep a Crepe Myrtle small and ornamental, it will require some trimming once it reaches the desired size. If you have a large open space, these trees can grow very large over time if you let them, spanning fifteen feet wide and twenty-five feet high. Too often these poor ornamental trees will go through something I call crepe murder! That’s when you see one that has been trimmed too much and it’s just a sad trunk – that isn’t necessary to keep them small. An annual trimming and cutting back to the size you prefer will be

enough to keep your tree at a desired size; no need to hack all the limbs down to the base. Dwarf Crepe Myrtles will only grow to a height of four feet and semi-dwarf can grow to a height of eight feet. Depending on what you need and where, there is a Crepe Myrtle that will probably suit your needs. They come in white, pinks, reds and purples which may be why they get the nickname “lilac of the south.” Once they are established, they are quite drought tolerant, making them an excellent choice for those on the lazy, or busy, side when it comes to yard work.

The Iris family is another very hardy, sun loving flower that will be an easy addition to any garden. These are not full of foliage, they are more upright in stature and don’t require a large amount of space, so they can be a nice filler, but their flowers are impactful, and they have plenty of variations (hundreds!) to keep things interesting when planted in large groupings! Irises are tuberous, which means they can also be divided and moved easily. They do not require a ton of water to survive the summer, so let Mother Nature take care of the watering.

Sedum plants, which can either be flowering or simply pretty foliage, are an easy growing, drought resistant plant. There are hundreds of these in the genus so a standout for me is the Mr. Goodbud or Stonecrop variation. They are tall, ranging from twelve to twenty-four inches in height and they have massive flower heads that span up to six inches wide. These plants have extremely strong stems, so even with their expansive burst of color, they aren’t going to flop over like the dreamy, pillowy, peony does. The Mr. Goodbud is a vibrant pink bud that bursts open to a purple pink. Sedums are ideal for any full sun garden and even potted plants that you do not want to have to fret over.

If you aren’t keen on yardwork or watering plants for hours, you don’t have to give up the idea of having some bold and beautiful colors around this summer!

5 REASONS WHY WE ALL SHOULD LEARN SELF-DEFENSE

The statistics themselves should be enough to terrify anyone into wanting to learn how to protect himself or herself. According to the RAINN website, (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the numbers do not lie. RAINN, which is the nation’s largest antisexual violence organization, reports that “every 68 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted,” while “one out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).”

These statistics do not only involve females, “about three percent of American men – or one in 33 – have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.” Finally, the smallest victims harmed through violence are our youth. In 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies found compelling evidence to indicate that, “63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse.” As if these dismal numbers are not enough to make anyone’s head spin, there are other reasons why learning self defense techniques are crucial.

Reason #1: Your self confidence will get a bonus boost! While self-defense courses come in a variety of types, enrolling in a local martial arts class may be a wonderful way to start. Whether a child or an adult, anyone who participates in martial arts will talk about how much more confident he or she feels after a few lessons. Specific martial arts classes will guide students through skill levels that progressively get harder. However, as students progress, trust in their capabilities and their ability to overcome challenges increases.

Reason #2: Empowerment is part of the process! This can be a big part of why learning self-defense tactics is becoming so popular for women. According to the article, “Five reasons every woman should train in self-defense,” females who train in self-defense feel incredibly empowered and can manage any type of adversity which is thrown at them. By learning the skills of martial arts, these students have solid and confident energy, which shows all – including perpetrators – that they are a force of which to be reckoned.

Reason #3: Self-defense can strengthen our natural instincts. Part of learning self-defense moves and/or martial arts is being able to tap in and listen more to our natural instincts. Being able to strengthen our own judgment will help make the difference between becoming victims or victors. While part of this is developing and listening to your natural instincts, it can also mean being able to pay attention to your surroundings and being present in the moment. Prior to enrolling in classes, students may not realize how often they put themselves in vulnerable situations (i.e., sitting in cars in parking lots on phones, listening to air pods after leaving the gym late at night, rushing to get to work, not checking the car before hopping in, etc.).

Reason #4: Learning different tactical moves can strengthen the body and mind. Yes, learning self-defense moves is a workout! Not only for the body but, more importantly, for the mind. At the end of the day, these courses are a fantastic way to get exercise. After passing each level of training, the lessons become more physically demanding. This intense exercise can not only improve your mood, but can be part of the healing process, as well. This is especially true if the student is a former victim of a crime. By taking time out to do this physical and mental exercise, students can eventually recover from the psychological impact of the trauma.

Reason #5: It can be a family affair! One of the best reasons to enroll in self-defense courses is to not only learn the skills to help protect yourself from a possible unpleasant situation, but to train your family members, as well. Martial arts classes can start for children as young as three, therefore, it is a possibility that the entire family can be involved. Not only will it be comforting to know that you can defend yourself from an attacker, but you can also learn specific moves to help protect your children when needed. One of the best lessons one can take away from a course is learning how to use your body as a weapon. No one can take this away from you. Overall, enrolling in a course can help you and your family respond effectively in difficult and scary situations.

CASTING HOPE:

THE JOURNEY OF OPERATION NORTH STATE

On a sunny North Carolina morning, a group of “gym-rat” senior men sat around the old familiar breakfast table grumbling about the world’s “state of affairs.” It was a weekly scene for these gentlemen. They enjoyed a good meal, each other’s company, the weekly time they had on their hands after a morning run and the weekly brainstorms on how they could change things for mankind, before they headed back to their normal lives until the next breakfast meeting.

Terry Snyder was one of these gentlemen. The year was 2010. One particular morning’s conversation stirred a passion within Terry’s heart. They spoke on the many flaws that were happening within the V.A. (the United States Veterans Affairs) that played daily in the news headlines. For years, our veterans had suffered from extremely poor medical treatment to homelessness and depression, not to mention an astronomical number of suicides. There did not seem to be many options of assistance offered to our veterans who so desperately needed help. In such a modern thriving time, it was a tragedy to witness.

Terry had never served in the military, yet he felt an extreme urgency to “do something.” At breakfast that morning, he asked around the table, “WHAT are YOU doing?” “WHY don’t WE/US citizens help them?”

By the time they parted ways that day, Terry had challenged his friends to be a part of something that would positively impact as many veterans as he could reach.

And so came the fruition of Operation North State (ONS).

Terry knew that getting like-minded folks together in an outdoor setting could be both empowering and therapeutic for these men and women that so selflessly served our country.

The first Operation North State outing offered veterans the experience of a fishing tournament. A real deal fishing tournament…a boat, a competition, an emcee, prizes, all that goes along with a fishing competition, including bragging rights! Terry solicited local tournament anglers as well as “average joe” anglers to volunteer as “host boaters.” He drew in nearly 70 volunteers and veterans (along with their respective caregivers). The first annual Fishing Festival was funded 100% by donations and volunteers, at zero cost to the veteran participants. The camaraderie was more than what anyone could have anticipated. Between the veterans and the volunteers, the lifetime fellowship and friendships that were developed that day were astounding. The mental benefits this outing had among the veterans were inspirational. The sheer joy that this event brought to these folks’ lives was astonishing.

Operation North State Fishing Festivals have grown to five per year on freshwater lakes around the state and at least three saltwater fishing outings. All at zero cost to the veterans who want to participate. The relationships that have developed within the fishing community, the veteran community and host communities have opened even more opportunities for fellowship outside of ONS events. Cumulatively, ONS has been able to offer nearly 800 fishing opportunities annually. The fishing events were so much a success that it only warranted Terry to provide more ways

60 | lkn-magazine.com

to help. Operation North State not only added an annual golfing tournament and monthly cycling events, but it also added a snowboard outing, kayaking and gokarting. First aid classes have been added, and one of the veterans that attended was able to utilize what he had learned to actually save a life!

Far beyond the experience of the outings themselves, there is something that happens within the souls of these men and women that is hard to explain. It’s almost magical in some cases. What once may have been a man that barely got out of bed is now a man that finds purpose in the next day. From something that seems so simple, to go fishing or golfing…friends are being made, lives are being changed and positivity is being brought into lives that were once very dark.

Terry Snyder “did something.” One day, he made one decision to help. He followed through with that one decision. He made an impact on one life and then another…and that is how “we” change the world.

Information on Operation North State can be found on Facebook and on their website at OperationNorthState.com

I was asked to write this article and was honored. But more so stressed because I have had the honor to be part of the fishing events (as a host boater) and it’s so hard to put into words the impact that they have. These “outings” are lifechanging. I’ve felt it, I’ve witnessed it. I was changed just by the sheer privilege of taking out someone that fought for the country where I was born. I saw men that at the beginning of the day, seemed vulnerable and unsure, but at the same time, they were the strongest and most brave men I’d ever been around. Then, at the end of the day, after fishing, I witnessed the most phenomenal camaraderie. Laughing, relaxed men, confident even. It was like a switch. Lifelong friends were formed. Plans for more adventures were made. Wives, partners, caregivers all approached the host boaters, volunteers and especially Terry to express their gratitude and tell their individual stories of how their lives have been positively impacted since these outings. It’s magical to sit back and watch. It’s a blessing to be a small part of it all. It’s a mystery as to how it all unfolds, but it does, and it is beautiful.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE: UNLOCKING THE POWER OF COMMUNICATION THROUGH MOVEMENT

American Sign Language (ASL) is more than just a form of communication. It is a way to connect individuals through a system of gestures, facial expressions and movements. ASL is the primary form of communication for deaf individuals. It empowers them to express themselves, while having meaningful interactions with family, friends and coworkers. Many people learn ASL at a young age, usually in school, and it is taught through written and verbal language.

ASL is characterized as a visual-spatial language composed of handshapes, movements and facial expressions. Each gesture and expression conveys specific meanings, words and phrases. One of the most crucial aspects of this form of communication is facial expressions, along with body language. Each expression can be used to showcase a person’s tone, emphasis and inflection, like a person’s voice does. Body language helps to clarify what is being communicated.

There is no definite origin as to when ASL was created or put into use. However, it does date back to 1814 with Dr. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a minister from Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Gallaudet’s neighbor had a deaf daughter, Alice Cogswell. Wanting to communicate with her and having little luck with teaching Alice reading and spelling, Dr. Gallaudet went to Europe to study under Abbe Sicard, Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc, all who were deaf educators. After learning their methods and coming back to the United States, Dr. Gallaudet, along with the help of Clerc, opened a deaf school. Officially opening in 1817, today the school is known as the American School for the Deaf. It is recognized as being the first public free deaf school in the United States.

Like spoken languages, ASL continues to evolve and adapt over time, reflecting changes in culture, technology and society. Regional variations and slang construct the diversity and inclusivity of ASL. While mainly used by the deaf and hard of hearing community, this inclusive style of language is used by others throughout the world as it is proven to have many benefits and reasons for utilizing it.

One of the most important benefits of ASL is its inclusivity. Unlike spoken languages, ASL crosses hearing boundaries, allowing individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to fully participate in conversations, social activities, education, employment and other opportunities. Through using ASL, people and society are able to become more inclusive and accessible to people with various needs. A sense of belonging and equality is felt by all. In addition, by learning ASL, a person can strengthen his or her cognitive abilities and linguistic skills. According to researchers, becoming proficient in ASL is the same as becoming proficient in another language and can be considered as a form of bilingualism. Learning a second language can improve a person’s memory, problem-solving skills and cognitive function.

There are multiple reasons why individuals consider learning and using ASL. For deaf individuals, ASL is not just a language; it's a lifeline for communication. Through conversations, deaf and hard of hearing individuals are able to build social connections, gain self-advocacy and pursue opportunities as other individuals do. For hearing individuals, learning ASL promotes empathy, understanding and effective communication. Whether communicating with deaf friends, family members or colleagues, knowing ASL demonstrates respect for their language and culture while building genuine connections.

Lastly, ASL can be a valuable skill in professions such as education, healthcare and customer service. By incorporating ASL into your skill set, professionals can better serve deaf students, clients and patients, giving them equal access to information and services.

Today, ASL is widely seen in society. It is commonly used at sporting events, speeches, and in films and television shows. Celebrities including CJ Jones, Marlee Matlin and Nyle DiMarco are well-known for communicating through ASL. American Sign Language is a powerful tool for connection, empowerment and inclusion. By embracing ASL, individuals are creating a more diverse, equitable and accessible society where everyone, regardless of his or her differences, is celebrated and respected.

FROM ISLAND STRAY TO MOORESVILLE’S DARLING:

PAPI’S JOURNEY OF HOPE

photography and story by JAIME GATTON

Just a few months ago, Papi was roaming the Caribbean island of St. John with no home or family to call his own. On neighboring St. Thomas, 400 animals were crammed into a shelter meant to hold only 70.

While many humans dream of island living, it presents serious challenges for stray and abandoned animals. Like Papi, many dogs in the U.S. Virgin Islands have heartworm disease. Natural disasters like Hurricanes Irma and Maria – the two category five hurricanes that devastated the islands in 2017 – displace pets from their homes and families. Since the islands are surrounded by water, resources are limited. While island guests are potential adopters for shelter animals, the logistics and costs of traveling home complicate things.

Similar to stateside animal shelters, when USVI shelters face overcrowding, they have to make room. For the veteran four-legged shelter inhabitants, that could mean mass euthanasia.

Fortunately for Papi and his USVI friends, it meant a mass exodus.

On February 8th, animal advocates – including NC non-profit Ben’s Branches, St. Thomas’ Pets With Wings, Last Chance Air in Statesville, Whole Pet Vets in Davidson and Mooresville’s Lake Norman Humane and Piedmont Animal Rescue – worked tirelessly to transport 400 “coconut retrievers,” cats and “island hoppers” (bunnies) from USVI to the U.S. mainland. It was a miracle for the animals that were at risk of being euthanized exactly one week later.

The group of advocates emptied the overcrowded St. Thomas shelter and rescued homeless dogs like Papi from St. John and Tortola. Within 24 hours, all 400 animals were loaded in crates on Last Chance Air freedom flights, two of which were bound for the Statesville Regional Airport.

Rescues along the east coast – many, like LKN Humane, facing overpopulation crises of their own – offered to take in the island animals. Despite being full, when LKN Humane Director Dana Kelley received the call asking for help, she immediately agreed. “They said ‘We have this need,’ and I said, ‘Yes’...then I panicked the next day,” she said, smiling. LKN Humane took in 10 dogs, all of which were heartworm positive.

Treating heartworm is a grueling and expensive – but lifesaving – process. Through Whole Pet’s Global Outreach program, Dr. Nicole Sheehan and her staff not only took in cats and bunnies to adopt out to the community but donated services and medication for the local animals, as well, including spays/neuters and heartworm treatment. Piedmont Animal Rescue took in island cats and transported animals to and from veterinary care.

When the animals first arrived in Statesville from USVI, Dr. Sheehan and her team helped unload crates from the airplanes and made rounds to check on everyone. That’s when Sheehan first met Papi, a two-year-old American bulldog whose wagging tail excitedly thumped against the interior walls of his crate. “You’re here! You made it!” Dr. Sheehan exclaimed, her arms outstretched. “You are alive!”

But to keep Papi alive, he would need heartworm treatment, which meant keeping the fun loving, spunky bulldog calm for several weeks.

According to the American Heartworm Society, heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites and live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of infected animals (usually dogs). Easily preventable, heartworm disease can lead to lung disease, heart failure and organ damage that can affect a dog’s quality of life even after the parasites die.

Physical exertion during treatment could cause many heartworms to die at once, leading to blood clots in the lungs or anaphylaxis, both of which can be life threatening for dogs. The higher the heartworm load, the more a dog’s activity should be restricted, and Papi had a heavy load according to Emily Frammartino, veterinary assistant and hospital manager for Whole Pet Vets. His liver enzymes were also high – possibly an indication of heartworm damage – so he’s now on a daily supplement for liver health.

While Papi experienced a couple “down days” during his first heartworm treatment, Frammartino said he’ll recover just fine. “Once he’s through his treatment, he gets to be a normal dog and live a normal life,” she said.

Papi is currently living his best life in Mooresville. Nearing the end of his rest period post treatment, he’s anxiously waiting to run and play with his six foster siblings.

LKN Humane has coconut retrievers for adoption, and Ben’s Branches, which works with rescue groups and volunteers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, said 20 island pups still need rescue placement, foster homes or adoptive families.

Want to help? Follow the coconut retrievers’ stories and/or donate toward ongoing expenses to support those without fosters or families by visiting bensbranches.org or wholepetvets.com.

THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN SOONER

They say that as people get older, they get wiser. As people grow older, they reflect on their lives, the lessons learned and moments they enjoyed and regretted. This can turn into wisdom which is said to come with age. Sometimes, people discover lessons they wish they had known sooner; life hacks and bits of trivia that can help make their lives easier going forward. I have been alive for more than 30 years (I won’t give my exact age), and during those three decades, I have had a few realizations about things.

HERE ARE THE NINE THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN SOONER.

1. People will twist and turn stories for their benefit. No one knows the true story of situations, unless they were there. When recounting what happened, people will often “rewrite” and “retell” the story in their favor, often making themselves look better. Remember this when only hearing one side of the story.

2. Have high expectations, but don’t be disappointed when they aren’t met. We all have different versions and images of how people should act, and when they don’t act a certain way, we are left disappointed. Limit your expectations of others and what you expect of them. You can still look for the best, but give grace when expectations are not met.

3. “No” is a complete sentence. There are times when multiple requests and decisions to be made are thrown at a person. Many people wish to be people pleasers and say “yes” to all the things asked of them, however, that can get tiring and be impossible. Saying “no” isn’t selfish and is a complete answer. There are certain times when more explanation is needed, but most of the time, it is not. Also, you can be kind and helpful, but set boundaries and do not let yourself be taken for granted.

4. Failure is going to happen, and it is completely okay. Being a perfectionist can lead to burnout. It is important to

know that sometimes you will fail, and that is okay. Making mistakes is okay and a part of life. Don’t beat yourself up when this happens. Keep your eyes on your goal and turn it into a learning moment.

5. Listening is just as important as speaking, sometimes more important. Active listening can be hard to do but shows you are engaged and interested in the topic, person or conversation. A good rule of thumb is to spend at least 60% of the time in a situation listening and the other 40% talking. Absorb what is being said, and take it all in before asking questions or responding.

6. You can’t control everything, so let it go. If you can’t do something about a situation you don’t like, then don’t spend time worrying about it. In the end, all you are doing is hurting yourself. Focus on the things you can control and put your energy towards that.

7. Life can change on a moment’s notice, whether you like it or not. Change can be hard, but you are strong and can adapt to whatever life throws at you. Take it day by day. And, once again, focus on what you can and can’t control. In the end, keep in mind that one way or another, you’ll be okay.

8. Step outside of your comfort zone whenever you can. It can be scary at first to try new things. Start with something new and small. Before you know it, you’ll be expanding your comfort zone without realizing it.

9. Just be yourself. There will be some people you will like and there will be others you don’t. Be confident and trust who you are. There is no one like you, so why not be yourself?

No matter how old you are, you are able to still offer lessons and reflections to those who are younger. By taking the time to pause and meditate on what you have learned, you will realize there is no shame in getting older.

Dear Dr. Keith,

I’m a 57-year-old woman who’s been married for 32 years. My husband and I are both still working and recently moved into a gated golf community, our retirement home. We have a 30-year-old son who still lives with us. The initial plan was for him to move out on his own when we moved, however, much to the dismay of my husband, our son guilted me into allowing him to stay with us a little longer. Our son finished college and earned his degree. He has a wonderful job, so it’s not an issue of him being able to afford living on his own. I’m fearful he won’t be able to survive by himself, because he’s never lived by himself. He’s always lived with and been supported by us. I’m afraid if he leaves, we will see very little of him.

My husband has told me for years that I baby him too much; that I’m not doing him any favors by taking care of all his needs. I cook for him, make his bed and clean his room. I wash and fold his laundry. He has no responsibilities around the house, yet he is disrespectful, lazy and confrontational when we ask him to help us with chores. It’s easier to do them ourselves than to ask him for favors; doing so generally ends up in an unpleasant confrontation. He has the entire upstairs living space to himself and takes his dinner there instead of sitting down and conversing with his father and me at the dining table. He has very few friends and dates periodically. He’d rather be on his computer surfing the internet or playing video games and gets quite upset when we bother him. We’ve never charged him rent or asked him to help out with household expenses or groceries. We made it easy for him and gave him a good life. I’ve tried to be a good mother and friend. I’m not sure what to do. My husband wants him to leave; I want him to stay, however, things would have to be different. He’d have to learn to be grateful and respectful, and I don’t know if he can. I feel like I’m losing my son and my husband. I’m starting to resent my husband and my son. I’m feeling confused, lost and caught in the middle. Please help me gain some clarity.

ASK DR. KEITH

To become a parent is one of the most challenging and rewarding choices we can make, and the most important job you’ll ever have. The problem that I see recurring more and more is parents wanting to be their kids’ friend instead of taking on the responsibility of being their parent. They allow their children to be disrespectful, manipulative and irresponsible without consequences early on in their lives, and they carry those negative behaviors into adulthood. To be a friend is a poor choice; to become a parent is the right choice. Many parents are afraid their children will not like or love them if they’re held accountable or given consequences for their bad behavior, poor choices or being irresponsible. Sound familiar? If you choose to avoid setting healthy boundaries or enforcing consequences for poor behavior, your children will become disrespectful, defiant and irresponsible because there are no repercussions. If you choose to enforce healthy boundaries and hold them accountable for bad behavior, they may not like you for it, but they’ll learn to respect you. If you choose to raise children, run a business, develop a personal or professional relationship fear-based, you’ll set yourself up for failure. A parent’s job is to teach their children to become accountable, adaptable, responsible, respectful and resilient in a world that’s not fair; not everyone wins or gets a trophy. That’s right, I said it, not everyone in the real world gets a trophy – it should be earned. Healthy self-esteem is built through accomplishment, not given or gifted.

The one common thing I’ve found in healthy, successful relationships is that each one makes the other feel like they’re a priority. Does letting your 30-year-old son live with you make your husband feel like a priority when he’s made it clear he doesn’t approve? Has your son earned the privilege of staying with you with the constant contempt and disrespect he shows you both? Enabling is disabling and entitlement cripples, and I’ve seen it destroy many relationships. What are you afraid of? Is it becoming an empty nester, feeling unloved or being called a bad parent? In a healthy marriage, the wife should be the husband’s priority, and the husband his wife’s. If you keep putting your son’s needs above your husband, you’re sacrificing your marriage. Is it worth it? People become accountable, responsible, respectful and resilient when it’s required, and it hasn’t been required of your son. What should you do? Refocus your energy and attention on your husband and your marriage, and make them a priority. Learn to set healthy boundaries with your son. Discuss a plan of action to transition your son into a place of his own, and make him responsible for his living expenses and stop the enabling. He may resent it at first, but eventually, he’ll learn to respect it. He’s going to sink or swim, and that’ll be his choice. It’s your responsibility and time to fill the pool and throw him in without a life jacket.

DISCOVERING A HIDDEN GEM IN NC WINE COUNTRY

Love wine? Just a short drive, 40 minutes west of Winston-Salem and one hour from the Lake Norman area, you arrive in the heart of North Carolina’s premier wine country. The Yadkin Valley AVA is home to more than 100 wineries, but there’s one destination that rises above and legitimately delivers a “Napa Valley feeling,” and that place is Dynamis Estate Wines.

THE DYNAMIS EXPERIENCE

Located on a sprawling 1,500-acre estate at more than 1,600 feet above sea level – the highest vineyards in Yadkin County – Dynamis Estate Wines is more than just a winery; it is a luxurious and sensory experience! From the moment you arrive at the gate, it is clear Dynamis is special. A 2.5-mile private drive takes you up the mountain and through the natural beauty of vineyard contours until you arrive, now completely “transported,” to the Tasting Lodge. The vibe here is intimate and luxurious. The vineyard views are dreamy. A wine ambassador greets you by name and you settle into a comfortable, informative and tranquil wine-tasting experience.

Dynamis has 30 acres of gorgeous vineyards planted with Bordeaux-style varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. It has been said that “grapes like a site with a view” and nothing proves this more than vines growing on a mountain ridge. “There is something magical about the impact that elevation has on grapes,” said Vineyard Manager

Joseph Geller. “We have a gentle breeze that cools and dries the vines, and daytime temps stay relatively cooler up here. All this helps preserve natural acidity and aromatic complexity in our grapes.”

WINEMAKING

Dynamis’ mission is to craft premium quality wines without making any compromises. Unlike some wineries in North Carolina, Dynamis makes 100% of their wines from the grapes they grow on the estate. The Dynamis winemakers Katy Kidd and Matheson Worrell employ a natural and minimalist approach in the winery, working with the fruit as it is received from the vineyard, rather than manipulating wine by adding sugar, tannins, aromas and other additions in the process. “Our wines are all about our property and express the unique terroir we have,” said Katy. “We really want people to come up here and experience that and see for themselves.”

BEYOND THE WINE

While Dynamis prides itself on its wine-centric approach, they understand the importance of elevating the entire wine-tasting experience through food and special events. Complementing each tasting event are locally sourced, seasonally inspired small plates, paired perfectly with your chosen wine.

Additionally, Dynamis expands their culinary offerings with special events like the Sunday Supper Series and the educational Food and Wine Pairings. While many events at Dynamis are exclusive to Wine Club Members, the monthly Sunday Supper Series is open to all guests.

As summer approaches, you can be on the lookout for Dynamisgrown peaches, pears, apples, honey and pecans. You can find charcuterie boards and other small plates that include these locally grown items. Additionally, you will be able to purchase them fresh or small plates using these delicacies in the tasting room as they become seasonally available.

WINE CLUB

Dynamis has a growing and coveted wine club that fosters a community of like-minded wine enthusiasts with intimate events and educational opportunities. “We want to bring our members behind the scenes and into the winery to share with them the science and art of our process,” said Matheson. By joining the wine club, you can gain premier access to their exquisite wines, a luxurious brand experience and access to exclusive events hosted throughout the year.

EVENTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO

SUNDAY SUPPERS SERIES

The Sunday Suppers Series is a monthly culinary experience with the goal of fostering community while gathering around the table with a chef-cooked meal and a glass of wine. You are kindly greeted with a welcome glass of wine and seated with other patrons for an unforgettable dining experience. Upcoming dates are May 26th and June 23rd.

FOOD AND WINE PAIRINGS

Looking for more adventure with wine? This series is for you! Dynamis is excited to offer educational and delicious wine and food pairings featuring international cuisine. Discover how wine and cuisine harmonize to enhance your sensory experience.

GET READY TO VISIT!

Now is an exciting time to visit Dynamis Estate Wines. Operating hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

PEACE UNTO YOU

Just as I was about to wrap up our call with the customary “love you,” my girlfriend dropped a bombshell. We’ve known each other for a long time; her history was imprinted in the fabric of my mind and heart. Knowing this, she trusted that I’d be there with her as she grappled with a choice she regretted and an inner peace she felt she was losing.

The specifics are personal, and, for you and me, don’t matter. But inner peace – a priceless sense of being right with oneself – always does. There’s no place for smugness on this one. It’s deeply unsettling to be “off” on the inside; our foothold feels shaky, and we no longer trust ourselves to be and do what is right and true for us. It’s scary.

The beautiful thing is that we can work on building, strengthening and regaining the inner peace that is ours alone to nurture and cherish. Here’s how:

Self Acceptance...And Pursuing Your Best Self

For as long as you have breath, you are a valuable work in progress. Instead of fumbling your way through unmoored, be steadfastly intentional about defining your best version of you, the one you’re inspired to aspire to. That definition emerges when you take a deep look at your core spiritual beliefs, the values you live by and by simply envisioning the unique “footprint” you will leave behind in this life.

Peace With The Past...And The Next Right Thing

Forgive, forgive, forgive. Acknowledge that you did the best you knew how to do. Then, turn your forgiveness outward. Instead of holding onto hurt and resentment, consider what you can do right now that is aligned with that “best self” you aspire to be. Someone hurt me a long time ago, and I felt betrayed. But, in the here and now, I focus on how I can extend forgiveness and love to this person, even though that trust still bears a small crack. By keeping the focus on my choices, I reinforce that I can trust myself. That gives me a great deal of inner peace.

Clean Up What You Can...And Learn From Your

Mistakes

Take responsibility for the hurt or harm you may have caused. Be deliberate and generous in owning your actions and sincerely apologize. Actions like these are cleansing; they replace angst,

hurt and ugliness with a fresh sense of inner peace. But, don’t stop there. Take a good look at the whys behind your actions. Start to understand what triggers you to be and to act in ways that don’t support the vision you hold for yourself.

Pause When Your Buttons Are Pushed...Then Choose Your Response

And, when a button of yours is pushed, rein in your habitual reaction by creating a space before responding. Maybe that means not texting someone back immediately or saying “I don’t know how to respond. I need to think about what you just said.” Remember that we can’t take back what we put out there, so speak mindfully. Consider your truth, the other person’s feelings and perspective, as well as your relationship. It does take practice!

See Perfectionism For What It Is...And Then Decide Where You Will Put Your Energy

I’m taking a hard stance on this one – inner peace is unattainable when grasping for the carrot of perfectionism is in play. Why? Because there is always something better just beyond what you are trying so hard to attain. More wealth, more beauty, more success, more health, more happiness, more, more, more... don’t allow yourself to be snared in this trap. Instead, get clear about what is enough and how you want to be in this life. By acting accordingly, you will find peace.

Observe How You Cope...And Embrace Positive Coping When Things Get Tough

No one can completely dodge difficulty or sorrow. Those experiences come with this human journey no matter who you are. So, take some time to consider your current coping mechanisms and how they have served you. And then – because you have a clear sense of the person you aspire to be – do a little housekeeping. Focus on incorporating more positive coping skills when the ride gets a little rough.

ENHANCING YOUR NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL SELF

Entrepreneur Morgan Hagan loves to share a favorite quote: “You only live one life, so romanticize it and do everything with intent.”

She’s accomplishing that goal every day with her growing company, SheCo Esthetics, in Mooresville, NC. Morgan believes SheCo isn’t just about esthetics, but it’s also a place women can go as a “home away from home” – where they find what allows their inner soul to shine brighter and even more beautifully! And, her intentions are to build the business into so much more.

Morgan officially started her career in 2020 but opened her own business six months ago thanks to incredible, unconditional support from her family and friends! She specializes in lash extensions, brows and recently added dermaplaning to her repertoire, and she’s looking to add treatment-based services such as chemical peels, LED therapy and microneedling.

“When I was in high school, I did my senior project on makeup, and I have had lash extensions since I was 16!” said Morgan. “I struggled with self image and knew I wanted to help those who felt the same way. I wanted to approach being an esthetician as a means to enhance one’s beauty – rather than change it!”

Morgan says she’s most inspired by feedback from her clients.

“I have had many women approach me after their services with a child-like excitement because I was able to change something so small about their daily routine. It’s like healing their inner child the same way I did with myself.”

“This is so much more than a beauty industry for me,” she added. “It’s waking up and feeling your best. It’s creating a safe space to be yourself and approach your life with one less thing to feel unconfident about. Just as working out might be that for you, or cleaning your house, or being praised at work. It’s motivating!”

It’s true that new clients often need a gentle nudge. “One big misconception is that lash extensions cause damage to your natural lashes,” said Morgan. “When you have a lash artist who has been licensed and certified, this should never be an issue. Always find a reputable source and, if you ever have concerns, always ask for a second opinion.”

Book with Morgan by sending her a direct message or visit one of her social media accounts that will link you straight to her booking site. SheCo hours are by appointment only, 9:00 a.m.5:00 p.m. throughout the week, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Fridays and 9:00 a.m. - noon on weekends. With her referral program, refer a client and, with their paid session, you get credit and so do they. SheCo Esthetics is located at 144 Marketplace Avenue in Mooresville, NC, 704.572.2359. Follow SheCo Esthetics on Facebook and Instagram at SheCo_Esthetics.

HAPPY CLIENTS DELIVER THE BEST REVIEWS!

“Morgan is the absolute best! She listens to you and breaks down every little detail when explaining the process, whether it’s for your lashes or brows. Go see Morgan! She won’t disappoint! - SAMANTHA S.

“Morgan is not just talented, but she’s also incredibly kind. She took the time to understand exactly what I wanted and made sure I was comfortable throughout the process. My lashes look so natural, yet glamorous, and I receive so many compliments. Her attention to detail stands out, and she educated me on how to maintain my lashes – and follows up to see how I’m doing after appointments where we try new styles. I highly recommend Morgan to anyone looking for beautiful lashes and a wonderful experience! - CAMERON

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE:

BIBLE IN SIX WORDS

A while back I was asked to lead a group through the Bible in one year. I thought about this, and I know there are sixtysix books. I didn’t realize that there are 1,189 chapters. This equates to 18 chapters per book. If we worked on this for 35 weeks at 6 days per week, we would have to cover 6 chapters per day. That was our goal, 6 chapters per day for 36 per week, and 35 weeks with discussion on Sunday. This is flying through the scripture but exposing them to the Bible. We could and would do it. But there was one more thing I wanted to do and that was write a six-word summary for each book. The following is just that.

OLD TESTAMENT:

Genesis: Gods beginning, humans fail, start over.

Exodus: Slave without God, rescued by God.

Leviticus: How to live with God spiritually.

Numbers: God’s law strict, God’s character gracious.

Deuteronomy: God uses Moses, liberate, guide, lawgiver.

Joshua: Joshua conquers, divides land, renews covenant.

Judges: Judges lead without God, anything goes.

Ruth: Matriarch of the King, Jesus Christ.

1 Samuel: Samuel anoints, King Saul, King David.

2 Samuel: King David, a tool of God.

1 Kings: Story of Kings by the prophets.

2 Kings: We all sin, God forgives us.

1 Chronicles: 1 Chronicles, whose who in Israel.

2 Chronicles: People sin, God punishes, remnant remains.

Ezra: Ezra teaches Gods law in Jerusalem.

Nehemiah: Send me, Wall built, God wins.

Esther: For such a time as this.

Job: Keep the faith, God is steadfast.

Psalm: Praise God in song or poetry.

Proverbs: Wise sayings to assist our living.

Ecclesiastes: There is a time for everything.

Song of Songs: Sweetest love between man and women.

Isaiah: Isaiah could see Jesus in future.

Jeremiah: God says you will be punished.

Lamentations: Jerusalem is gone, pray to God.

Ezekiel: Show me Lord, I’ll show them.

Daniel: I bow to no other God.

Hosea: People destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Joel: All is lost, Locusts are coming.

Amos: God will restore His people, Israel.

Obadiah: Don’t gloat over misfortune of others.

Jonah: God cares about us including Nineveh.

84 | lkn-magazine.com

Micah: Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly.

Nahum: Even Nineveh had time to repent.

Habakkuk: The righteous live by the faith.

Zephaniah: God says evil will be punished.

Haggai: Build God’s temple, then build yours.

Zechariah: Victory comes from Spirit, not power.

Malachi: The best is yet to come.

NEW TESTAMENT:

Matthew: Jesus used parables to teach us.

Mark: Jesus’ life, from beginning to end.

Luke: Parables and miracles of Jesus life.

John: Jesus the Messiah, son of God

Acts: Record of acts of the Apostles.

Romans: Faith in Christ leads to righteousness.

1 Corinthians: Equal in Christ, different in gifts.

2 Corinthians: Paul justifies himself before the Corinthians.

Galatians: Saved by faith, punished by law.

Ephesians: Put on the armor of God.

Philippians: Rejoice in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Colossians: Do not worship anything but Christ.

1 Thessalonians: Keep the faith, Jesus is coming.

2 Thessalonians: Avoid laziness, continue what is good.

1 Timothy: Christ saved me, why not you?

2 Timothy: Trust Holy Spirit to guide you.

Titus: How to be a Christian leader.

Philemon: Paul, in chains, pleads for love.

Hebrews: Sacrifices unnecessary, Jesus paid the price.

James: Christians should live like Christ lives.

1 Peter: We die, God’s word is forever.

2 Peter: Grow in knowledge, resist false teachers.

1 John: Jesus is the son of God.

2 John: Walk in love as Jesus said.

3 John: Imitate what is good, not evil.

Jude: False teachers lead to sinful lives.

Revelations: God wins, God is in control.

The Bible is the word of God and I quote 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”

May God Bless you.

THE LAST WORD ON LIFE AT THE LAKE

SEE YOU SOON CHUCKLES

About six months ago, we took off from the U.S. for Australia and left our dog, Charlie, with my brother-inlaw, Chris. It turns out that Australia is one of the most difficult countries on Earth to bring your dog. There’s no rabies in the entire country, and they’re working hard to keep it that way. The upside is that if one of the gigantic bats here, known as fly foxes, that more resemble pterodactyls bites you, you don’t have to worry about getting rabies from them. It’s a small consolation.

When we found out we’d have the chance to live overseas for a while, we looked into bringing our dog and discovered a byzantine world of red tape, rules and expenses that would take us about three months to sort out. Turns out that it’s taken closer to 10 months. Before we could even start the process, we had to do multiple vet visits, exams, photos of Charlie having his microchip scanned and two blood tests sent to a special lab at Kansas State University that took months to send back results. Then, it turned out one of our vets in New York had listed his color as “yellow” on an official form, so we had to do it all over again. By the time we had

that all done, we found out there was a four month wait to get a reservation at the dog quarantine facility in Melbourne, Australia. So, a long wait later, we’re finally in the final stretch of bringing this guy to the other side of the world.

Since we left, Charlie has been terrorizing my brotherin-law. Seldom a day goes past that my wife or I don’t get a photo of a chewed up belt, shoe, wallet or slipper. Chris has two other big dogs and a dog door they use to go into the yard. Charlie is the only one who uses that door to drag clothes, dog beds, shoes and anything he can reach on the counter outside. Once or twice, he tried to drag the couch cushions out, but only succeeded in getting the pillows outside. Chris is, understandably, eager to get Charlie on the plane.

If all goes well, Charlie will soon be on the other side of the world eating kangaroo meat, which I didn’t believe they actually fed to dogs until I saw it myself in the grocery store.
