Publisher Perspective

Is anyone looking forward to March 20th?! Yes, the first day of spring! I couldn’t be more excited… I have missed my paddle board rides more than ever this winter. I have things to do, people to see… and so many places to go!

First adventure for me will be to paddle over to one of our new advertiser’s amazing restaurant, THE LANDING . It’s probably a 1.5-hour paddle, but oh, the fun along the way! If you haven’t been there since the remodel, you are missing out! See story on page 34—you are in for a treat! Our family has so many memories from time there with our kids, family and friends. The kids were toddlers when they were introduced to the arcade at The Landing… they would have happily eaten there every single day. Now that they are grown, it’ still a favorite spot, and the first place they go to take their friends to eat. We are so happy to welcome The Landing to our family of advertisers!

This month’s cover story is on MODERN FABRIC AND CHARLOTTE VINTAGE , and I can’t wait for you to read more about both of these dynamic, successful companies that are also eco-friendly. They trusted our business model and vision very early on and are another example of clients turned friends. Check out their story on page 30.

And check out the story on page 60 about our FIRST ANNUAL TOUR DE BOUTIQUE in Lake Norman! We are so excited to bring this ubersuccessful and FUN event to this community—it’s a win-win for local businesses and shoppers. Lots more info on this event coming soon on our social media.

Please be sure to mention LKN Magazine to our advertisers when you visit them, so they know you saw them in our publication. The advertisers make this magazine possible, and for that we are so grateful! Nothing makes my heart happier than supporting local and our amazing community.

Happy spring, my most favorite season of the year!

Happy reading, KEELA JOHNSON, Publisher

3 BENEFITS OF POWERINGUP YOUR 401(K)

The contribution limits for 401(k) plans increase for tax year 2023. For those looking to max out their plans, the most you can contribute will be $22,500—an increase of $2,000. For workers over the age of 50, the catch-up contribution increased an additional $1,000 to $7,500 per year. Now is great time to power up your savings plan and reap these benefits:

GET THE FULL COMPANY MATCH

If you aren’t contributing enough to get the full company match, you are missing out. A company match is a benefit offered by some employers where they will match a certain percentage of the contributions that their employees make to their retirement savings plan, such as a 401k. With a company match, you can save more money for retirement without using additional money out of your own pocket. This can help you save more money towards your retirement goal.

TAX SAVINGS

Contributions to your 401(k) are made on a pre-tax basis, meaning you don’t pay income taxes this year on money you contribute. This can help lower your overall tax bill. The money you contribute to a 401k will grow tax deferred and not taxed until you withdraw it in retirement. This means that your savings can grow tax-free until you need it, potentially leading to a larger nest egg.

FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE

Increasing your retirement savings may ensure that you have enough money to support yourself during your golden years. When you have more saved for retirement, you have more control over how and when you use your savings. This can give you the freedom to make choices about your retirement lifestyle, such as where you want to live and how you want to spend your time. Knowing that you have saved enough for retirement can provide financial confidence and help you enjoy your retirement without worrying about financial insecurity.

Wherever you are today, and whatever age, look for ways to increase the amount you are saving for retirement. Having a plan can help tremendously, and changes can be made more easily. If you’re starting from scratch, new to investing, or want a second look at your plan, give our office a call today.

the Shoulds

RELEASING THE "SHOULDS"

Many of us “SHOULD” on ourselves a lot. Whether it’s about our health, as in:

• I should eat better

• I should exercise more

• I should lose 15 pounds.

Or about our “OBLIGATIONS” :

• I should call my step-mom already

• I should bring some flowers over to my sick neighbor

• I should donate to the food bank more often.

Or maybe for you, it’s some other type of “SHOULD,” one that’s focused outward, toward other people:

• You should apologize to her

• You should have gotten a dog by now

• You should try my hair stylist.

Right now, torpedoed by a barrage of shoulds, how do you feel?

I feel “crappy.” That’s because when I direct a should inward, it rarely motivates or inspires me to act. Instead, it drags me down, making me feel guilty or deficient. Directed outward, those shoulds, however wellintended or gently-delivered, come across as judgment.

I notice that certain people in my life stir up the knee-jerk-should reaction. Case in point: my stepson and his girlfriend recently engaged in the first-time home-buying experience. The apple not falling far from the tree, the house was circa 1910 with a serious cool factor that redeemed its need for a serious restoration. As Dean and I sat eating soup on a chilly winter night, our shoulds spewedv forth with abandon:

They should spring for the more expensive mold inspection; they should tackle the kitchen first; they really should do their homework before they jump right in for God’s sake!

In fairness, our private shoulding was based on love, concern, experience, and the strong desire to spare these millennial first-timers from the pitfalls we had encountered. I admit: all of that shoulding was cathartic. Then we put the lid back on and reached out from a place of enthusiasm and helpfulness:

Did your realtor have any suggestions regarding the inspection? We know you guys are concerned about health. Are you thinking about maybe springing for the serious mold inspection? Not saying that you need to, but it ended up saving us quite a bit in the end.

If shoulding on yourself or others is a habit you’d like to lose, consider these tips:

A couple of years ago, I decided to lose my should by not saying ‘I should’ or ‘you should.’ By reframing those habits of mind and tongue, I felt intentional and empowered—which was so much better than feeling burdened, guilty, or judgmental. I realized that I was on to something. Of course, it wasn’t as if overnight, I could change a lifetime habit reinforced by culture and familiarity. Which is why I made dropping the shoulds a goal to work toward That approach was a far cry from my 16- year-old self who read an article, then decided she should put down the salt shaker forever. Somewhere along the way, I realized and then accepted that while some changes can be made overnight, the majority of them take time and no small measure of selfdirected kindness.

• THE SELF-DIRECTED SHOULD: Replace it with a concrete action you can take to reach the goal or express the value that matters to you. (I think I’ll take a ten-minute walk to add some steps to my day.) Give yourself an Atta Girl! For losing the guilt-driven should.

• THE OTHER-DIRECTED SHOULD: Replace it with a thoughtful question and relate what you say to the other person’s goals or values. (“I know you’ve been lonely since Kim moved out. Have you considered getting a pet?”) Give yourself an Atta Girl! for eliminating any suggestion of judgment.

ABOUT

A BOW OF Gallantry

Springtime in the South is off to the races! Whether you’ll be attending Keeneland’s Spring Meet races, keeping it local at Queen’s Cup, or going all out at The Derby, there are countless opportunities to don your best colorful ensemble. You may see some wild, ridiculous looking outfits at the races, but not to worry; I’m here to help you avoid that catastrophic offense!

For the ladies, it’s all about the hats. For the men, however, the jacket is king. Several factors will play into whether a particular coat is proper for the occasion: fabric composition, internal construction and tailoring, pattern, and color all play a role. My personal favorite fabric composition for the spring and summer months is a blend of cashmere, silk, and linen. The cashmere provides an exceptional softness, the silk ensures a proper drape while remaining lightweight, and the linen allows for incredible breathability. I know you’re probably thinking “cashmere, in the summer?!” Absolutely… cashmere is actually a temperature-regulating wool that’s incredibly lightweight but provides warmth when needed. Plus, when used as a spring-summer sportcoat fabric, it’s not the lofty cashmere you may be imagining. In terms of internal construction and tailoring, the more handwork a jacket has in it, the softer and lighter it will feel. Nothing feels as great as Neapolitan tailoring on the shoulders! Lastly, pattern and color are equally important. Don’t be afraid to go bold here for these occasions… but do so tastefully. This spring, the colors to wear will be oranges, purples, and aquamarines. These are all great colors to wear, and super versatile for other occasions.

When it comes to styling these jackets, I always like to add details you won’t see on most others.

Hacking pockets, which originated for ease of access while mounted on a horse, are a staple on any jacket I may wear to a horse race. They are angled instead of being cut straight across, and this gives a distinguished look seen generally only on custom coats. Fun linings, coordinating buttons, and different lapel styles are also great customization options when considering your new go-to spring jacket. When designing the inventory for my store, I add several of these features to many of our ready-to-wear jackets, so if custom isn’t an option but you’d still like to look the part, we have you covered!

Perhaps the most important part of your outfit is complementing that of your date. Truly matching is a bit much and lacks individuality; complementing is perfection. This should be achieved throughout the entire outfit, and not just the accessories. I have guys come into the store often looking for ties to match dresses their wives are wearing, but the ties won’t necessarily go with the suit or coat they’re wearing. It’s a noble and appreciated effort, but we want to make sure you look tasteful and knowledgeable in your efforts.

Spring style is a great opportunity to break out of your comfort zone and add something you may not normally consider. The colors are versatile, fabrics are purposeful, and the best part is you’ll show that you know what you’re doing as opposed to looking like you’re rushing a fraternity in the boring old navy blazer and khakis. Stop by Hampton’s sometime and we’ll be happy to help you assemble your ideal spring and race-ready wardrobe… you don’t want to look careless when cashing in the big ticket!

If you have any questions or a topic you’d like to see addressed, please feel free to contact me at Tyler@HamptonsMens.com

Love Languages

THE 5 LOVE LANGUAGES

Physical Touch: Not as Sexy as it Sounds

Welcome to part three in the Love Language article series. I hope that you have enjoyed learning more about words of affirmation and acts of service. As refresher, The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate is a 1992 book by China Grove, N.C. native, Dr. Gary Chapman. The book outlines five general ways that romantic partners express and experience love, which Chapman calls "love languages." According to Wikipedia, the book sold 8,500 copies in its first year, four times what the publisher expected! The following year it sold 17,000, and two years later, 137,000. It has been on the New York Times Best Seller list since August 2009. A new, revised edition of The Five Love Languages was released on January 1, 2015.

THE FIVE “LANGUAGES” ARE: WORDS OF AFFIRMATION ACTS OF SERVICE

PHYSICAL TOUCH GIFT GIVING QUALITY TIME

So, let’s get physical! (And if you picked up on the Olivia Newton John reference there, more power to ya’!)

Physical Touch is the most misunderstood of the love languages because it extends past just your relationship with your partner. If physical touch is the language you “speak,” you are likely expressing yourself through touch with friends, family, and in some cases even strangers. Not in a sexual way or even an emotional way but a partner with even the slightest hint of insecurity may be quick to misinterpret your innocent communication.

So, let’s back up. The physical touch love language is defined as a nonverbal love language people use to let others know they are cherished. The physical nature of this language leads some people to think it’s simply about satisfying sensual needs, but desiring physical touch is usually more about feeling appreciated and safe than it is about sex.

NOT SURE IF THIS IS YOUR LANGUAGE? HERE ARE SOME OF THE SIGNS THAT IT MAY BE:

• You’re comfortable with public displays of affection, even in front of large groups.

• You feel alone in a relationship if you’re not able to express or receive physical affection.

• You like to get massages on a regular basis and love the occasional foot rub.

• You pride yourself on being a good hugger, and you like sitting close to others.

• You look forward to kisses and intimacy with your partner more than anything else.

Did you read those signs and think, nope, that’s definitely not me but that sure sounds like my spouse! Then knowing how to be a good partner with someone whose language it is can go a long way to enhancing your commitment to each other.

START WITH

SOMETHING I

CALL THE TRIPLE H APPROACH: HANDS, HUGS, & HOLDS!

• Walking the dogs together? Take your partner's HAND for a portion of the journey. It’s a small thing but can feel big to a person who might be craving the feel of your touch.

• HUGS at the door ALWAYS! In my house, it’s an unspoken and strongly adhered to rule: nobody leaves the house without a hug and kiss goodbye. Again, a small gesture but it makes the giver and receiver feel cherished.

• HOLD them. Is your partner venting about a bad day? Take them in your arms. Are they celebrating a great day? Put your arms around them as you cheer! Just sitting side by side binge-watching Season 4 of Ozark? Get a hold of your partner’s feet and rub them.

In my home, I am happy to say that this is a language we both speak! My husband and I are almost annoyingly affectionate which resulted in ample eye rolls and EWWWWs from our son when he was a kid. While physical touch has a reputation as the most misinterpreted love language, in my opinion, it’s the simplest language to learn. After all, what could be easier than reaching out to hold the hand of that cherished person who shares your days with you?

JOYFUL JOURNEY

Pilot Mountain State Park

Welcome, LKN readers, as we journey this month to the Triad region of North Carolina. Located in Surry and Yadkin counties, Pilot Mountain State Park rises majestically 1,400 feet above the valley floor of the gently rolling NC hills. The Native Americans called it “Jomeokee,” meaning “great guide” or “pilot.”

A visit to Pilot Mountain State Park is a journey through the rich geological and cultural history of the Piedmont Triad. The park is known for its Big Pinnacle, a monadnock and the westernmost peak of the Sauratown Mountains, that can be seen from all directions in the park. Pilot Mountain has guided centuries of travelers, from nomadic Native American tribes seeking food and shelter along the Yadkin River to Moravian immigrants establishing a new home in the Carolina backcountry.

An interesting side note is that Pilot Mountain was the likely inspiration for “Mount Pilot” in Andy Griffith’s television show. Griffith was born in the nearby town of Mount Airy, which was the model for the small town of Mayberry in the popular long-running show.

Joyful Journey

BRIEF HISTORY

Joyful

Journey

“History is a symphony of echoes heard and unheard. It is a poem with events as verses.”

Pilot Mountain is known to geologists as a quartzite monadnock, a lone survivor of the erosion of millions of years that wore the surrounding peaks of the ancient Sauratown Mountains down to flat lands. Pilot Mountain is capped by two prominent pinnacles from which visitors can see across hundreds of miles of the Piedmont Triad and to the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia.

According to the state park’s website, the mountain was mapped in 1751 by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson, father of President Thomas Jefferson. Pilot Mountain became North Carolina’s 14th state park in 1968, due in large part to the efforts of a group of local citizens. Prior to that time, the mountain was a commercial tourist attraction, not unlike a part of Grandfather Mountain, that achieved non-profit status in 2009. Although, Grandfather’s owner, Hugh Morton, had a stewarding nature and worked to maintain the conservancy of the land.

The Pilot Mountain Preservation and Park Committee proposed the establishment of Pilot Mountain as a state park in order to protect it and the surrounding area from further commercial development. Working with the conservationminded owner of the property, Mrs. J.W. Beasley, the group secured options on the land and raised matching funds that made it possible to purchase the land with federal grants. In further support of the park, the committee acquired more than 1,000 acres of land along the Yadkin River that was added to the park in 1970. Additional acreage was later acquired, bringing the park to its present size of 3,703 acres. Today, Pilot Mountain stands as a monument to the desire and concern of citizens dedicated to preserving the natural resources of North Carolina.

RECREATION

“Enjoy wholesome recreation to reduce stress.”

Inviting outdoor enthusiasts to a vast array of activities, Stone Mountain State Park offers everything from hiking and horseback riding to rock climbing and camping, with accesses on both the rugged terrain of the mountains and the Yadkin River. The NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail also traverses both park sections.

A seven-mile woodland corridor joins two sections of the Pilot Mountain State Park, each section offering a variety of opportunities for outdoor fun. The mountain segment, which

includes the two pinnacles, contains most of the visitor facilities. If you hike the 3-mile Grindstone Trail to Little Pinnacle Overlook, you get a close-up, eye-level view of Pilot’s knob. The more primitive river section centers around the meandering Yadkin River, which I will talk about more in the Unique Features section below.

Rock climbing and rappelling are favorite activities at Pilot Mountain for experienced climbers. Climbing is permitted only in designated areas. Climbers must register with the park by obtaining a permit at the park office.

ACTIVITIES AT THE MOUNTAIN SECTION

• Hiking (14 miles)

• Picnicking

• Rock climbing

ACTIVITIES AT THE RIVER SECTION

• Hiking (14 miles)

• Horseback riding (9 miles)

• Paddling

UNIQUE FEATURES

“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”

CHIEF SEATTLE

A hidden gem for hiking, paddling, horseback riding and camping is the Yadkin River Section of Pilot Mountain State Park. This oftenoverlooked section is about 20 minutes south of the main park, tucked away in a secluded area where shoals and small islands dot the Yadkin River. It is connected to the main park by a 6.6-mile stretch of the Corridor Trail. In this secluded section of the park are several hiking trails, including the Horne Creek Trail, Ivy Bluff Trail, Yadkin Islands Trail, Yadkin River Park Trail and the Bean Shoals Canal Trail.

In the early 1800s, the Yadkin Navigation Company attempted to construct a 3-mile canal around Bean Shoals to allow shipping vessels on the Yadkin River to bypass the rocky shoals.

Massive stone retaining walls are still visible that line the riverbank here, yet the company mysteriously abandoned the project in 1825. This was also the site of the Shoals Ferry and a railroad depot, making the river crossing a hub of commerce in the late 1800s.

Explore the park’s 2.5-mile riverfront by canoe or kayak along the Yadkin River Canoe Trail. The park riverfront is one of the most scenic sections along the 165-mile trail which follows the course of the river, passing through five reservoirs to the confluence of the Yadkin and Uwharrie rivers and is part of the Mountains-to-Sea trail.

Other features of this river section of the state park include a paddle-in campsite, fishing island, picnic area and kayak/canoe launch, although the park does not offer rentals. Anglers can reel in sunfish, crappie, and catfish, but will need a state fishing license and must obey the regulations of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

Adjacent to the park sits the 113-acre Horne Creek Farm, a living historical site maintained by the state of North Carolina that’s like stepping back to 1910 when family farms dominated the landscape. The site features the family’s original farm house, a tobacco curing barn, a corn crib, adjacent fields under cultivation, and even a heritage apple orchard. Through programs ranging from old fashioned ice cream socials to an annual corn shucking event, Horne Creek Living Historical Farm provides a unique opportunity to learn about our rural past. Admission is free.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

I hope this article inspires you to take a trip to Pilot Mountain State Park and take advantage of the beauty, amenities, and activities available at this unique rural state park. I always enjoy my visits to Pilot Mountain State Park, because the awesome views, meandering trails, and the additional Yadkin river section keep me going back again and again.

Safe Travels, Robin

Pilot Mountain State Park is located at 1792 Pilot Knob Park Road Pinnacle, NC 27043. Park, visitor center, and park office hours vary by month. FUN, FITNESS & FAMILY TIME

6:00 AM WORKOUTS PROTEIN BITES.

I am a morning person. Beginning my workout between 5:00 - 6:00 a.m., five days a week. If it is the weekend, it is still a morning workout but a bit later. It is usually at my gym, or a run or yoga. I find that my body functions best at this time of the morning. There is something about that fresh air on your face before the sun rises. It is peaceful and invigorating. Ask me eight years ago if I would get up at 5:00 a.m. to workout ONE day a week, and I would have said you are crazy!

But now, I love it. I look forward to it even, and I am addicted. Addicted to a good workout. Addicted to waking up to the potential of each day and thanking God for the ability to do so. Addicted to getting my blood moving. Addicted to doing something good for my body before the sun comes up. Addicted to starting my day on a positive note with an open and fresh mind. Addicted to the process and my routine. Addicted to my coffee “treat” each morning as I spend time in reflection before the day begins for everyone else in my house. Addicted to my post-workout coffee snack.

A question I get a lot and was reminded of when someone asked me recently—do you eat before you workout? The answer is that I used to. However, things change and now I find that I don’t need to eat until after I workout. The only thing I have before my workout is a LARGE cup of lemon water. Every single morning. Addicted. Or, call it routine. This is what works for me. You have

to find what works for you and you may need a little pre-workout bite of a good carb/protein combo.

There are days that I have to adjust; schedules change, life happens but for the most part, this is my routine—addicted to my little morning ritual of an energizing workout followed by hot coffee and a snack to start my day. 99% of the time this is something I make on Sunday for the following week—either my almond bars, protein bites or paleo banana bread. This week it is banana bread, because I had some very ripe bananas; and if you know me at all, you know I am passionate about not wasting food!

MAKING STRANGE CONNECTIONS

Every year, by the grace of God, I fly home to Connecticut for several days in the early part of December. In the few short years since I’ve relocated, we’ve established a cherished tradition—Sisters’ Christmas—and carried on with the decades-old tradition of “B-Family Christmas.” It all happens within a whirlwind of days filled with joy, abundance, indulgence, shared confidences and oh-so-much love.

One couldn’t ask for more. But this year, even before the festivities began, “more” is just what I unexpectedly received. Deplaning, I was aware of an extra dose of seasonally inspired spring in my step. The fact that my travels went smoothly was a relief, but it was the conversation with two strangers who occupied the middle seat, to the right of my preferred window seat, that made the difference.

On the packed Greensboro to Charlotte flight, a younger woman sat next to me. One of us complimented the other on our cool, holiday inspired nails, and that simple nod to indulgence sparked our conversation. It turned out that she, too, was off for a sisters’ Christmas celebration. Talk of sisters led to talk of birth order, children, and somehow, almost inevitably, the tricky business of aging. Our conversation took on a life of its own, carried forth by topics of shared interest and concern, then dwindled, naturally. But just as we were about to land, this “stranger” turned to me and said:

“You know what I’m really terrified of?”

“What?”

“Menopause. I’ve heard so many bad things and I don’t know what to expect.”

“I get it, believe me. And by trusting myself, I got through it. Trust yourself. You will, too.”

That conversation stayed with me as I made my way to the next gate with time to spare. I sensed that something meaningful had transpired, and that maybe my seat partner needed to speak to her fear in a safe, anonymous place, with a safe, caring stranger.

I have since learned from research on connecting with strangers that many of us underestimate the “well-being benefits” of this type of interaction.

“We tend to think that close others—friends, romantic partners, and family members—are our biggest sources of connection, laughter, and warmth. While that may well be true, researchers have also recently found that interacting with “weak ties”—people that we don't know very well— actually brings a boost in mood and feelings of belonging that we didn't expect.”

Further research confirms that this effect also holds true for introverts who underestimate the good feelings they’ll experience from interacting with people they hardly know or don’t know at all!

But I digress.

On the longer flight that would whisk me to the snow-dusted hills and valleys of my home state, I hunkered into my preferred window seat. Within minutes, a guy in a Harley tee shirt and a baseball cap settled in with a wrapped hamburger in tow. I wish I could recall how our conversation sprung to life, but regardless, we talked for the better part of two hours. He was in the process of the unusual relocation back to the Northeast which is always intriguing to me. As one thread led to another, I learned that his grandfather fought in the Second World War, just as my dad had, and that they were both from Eastern Europe. At some point, we exchanged first names and contact information. I don’t expect I’ll reach out to him. Nor do I expect that he will reach out to me. But extending ourselves in that way just felt right. It “acknowledged” the connection we had made.

I know well the dangers of talking to strangers. We all do. And yet, we can do so in environments and situations that our gut tells us are safe. Why? Because doing so enriches us. It reminds us that we are all connected—simply by virtue of being human. And if you ask “the experts”, they will add that by developing the habit of talking to strangers, we stand to:

• Improve our health

• Become happier

• Enhance our sense of belonging

• Increase our empathy

• Get “unstuck” from our own patterns of thought & perception

That’s more than enough for me...

BEAUTIFULLY SUSTAINING S

Modern Fabrics co-owners Ewa and James Powell were indeed ahead of their time with recycling fabric. “Our company saves the earth, one yard of fabric at a time!” Ewa explains. With every purchase of their discontinued designer textiles, customers join the couple’s reclaiming efforts, geared towards reducing waste. The reclaimed fabrics they sell are from the finest luxury furniture companies in the United States— remnants that would otherwise be discarded and headed straight for a landfill. That makes every day Earth Day at Modern Fabrics— a salute both businesses will be celebrating this year on April 22!

At the core of Charlotte Vintage Furniture’s creative efforts is the mission of upcycling well-loved furniture and home accessories. “It’s a smart, simple idea, and encourages shoppers to embrace sustainability in their everyday lives,” says Katrina Teague, who co-owns the store with her husband Stan. Connoisseurs of Mid-Century Modern furniture and décor— a passion developed while decorating their own home— Charlotte Vintage Furniture is exclusive to modernism, which sets them apart in the Lake Norman and Greater Charlotte area.

Get to know more about these two amazing businesses— both built on rescuing and revitalizing wasted products— and both with an eye on the future. Each hopes your future home will include a “re-loved” piece or two, chosen from a combination of their creative retail efforts!

CHARLOTTE VINTAGE FURNITURE & MODERN FABRICS SHARE MORE THAN SIMPLY SIDEBY-SIDE RETAIL SPACE IN HUNTERSVILLE. THEY ARE ALSO KINDRED SPIRITS WHEN IT COMES TO SAVING THE EARTH!
March 2023 | 31

Numbers tell the story, and Katrina and Stan offer these startling statistics: The EPA counts over 12 million tons of waste generated by the furniture industry each year, with 80% going straight to the nearest landfill— and “fast furniture” is contributing to this disturbing trend.

“Furniture from the 1950s to the 1970s has stood the test of time— just like quality fabrics,” says Stan.

The store has been a true hands-on labor of love for Katrina and Stan since both retired from their earlier careers. They settled into their historic Huntersville location in March of 2022, after selling MCM treasures from a warehouse location and, before that, enjoying a successful online business.

“We love guiding clients towards a perfect sofa or decorative accessory in the store,” says Katrina. “It’s like finding the final puzzle piece to a family’s new home. Being right next to Modern Fabrics also gives our clients the chance to find a chair or sofa they love at our store, and walk next door to choose the perfect fabric for reupholstery.”

We feel strongly about investing in iconic pieces that appreciate over time,” says Stan. “We’re drawn to the aesthetic of clean lines and minimal embellishment.” Katrina describes their roots in modernism philosophy as less of a style, and more of a way of life. “These pieces are solid, functional, and respectful of the environment,” she says. “They are made of real

wood and real steel— always a better quality, plus these pieces hold their value.”

Katrina and Stan find most of the items they sell themselves, scheduling a week-long buying adventure at least once every quarter, with some side trips, auctions, and estate sales mingled in between. Inventory changes weekly, so if you see it and like, buy it! They are also ramping up their consignment business, in light of recent demand. “We offer a 360-degree opportunity,” says Katrina.

Charlotte Vintage Furniture has become a true shopping destination for repeat customers. And when it’s time to handle a relative’s estate, they often turn to Katrina and Stan for advice.

“Look closely at those vintage pieces that bring you happy memories and particular joy,” says Katrina. “Preserve them and pass them along to future generations! We see a fair amount of regret from people who immediately sell everything from a parent’s home.”

Enjoy meeting Katrina and Stan on your own shopping adventure at Charlotte Vintage Furniture, located at 15435 NC-73 in Huntersville, NC, 704-727-0362, and online at Charlottevintage.com. Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m.4:00 p.m., and military and first responder discounts are offered. Follow them on Instagram @charlottevintagefurniture, or email either katrina@charlottevintage.com or stan@ charlottevintage.com for more information.

Here’s some food for thought: Lake Norman has 520 miles of shoreline. Since Modern Fabrics opened their doors 15 years ago, they have saved approximately two million yards of fabric from going to the landfill, that’s over 1,100 miles of fabric! That’s two trips around Lake Norman!

At Modern Fabrics you can buy designer drapery and upholstery fabrics that have been rescued from cutting room floors— at 50-75% off their retail price. Ewa travels far and wide to source the fabrics you find in the Huntersville location and in the online store (modern-fabrics.com), and each bolt has a unique story behind it.

Her finds are often in the most obscure locations, and she brings them home for lucky customers who know the value of exquisite textiles. Meanwhile, Debra Worthy manages the day-to-day Huntersville store operations. With countless years of design experience, Debra will advise you on what fabrics are best-suited for your project, and what colors and patterns will complement your space.

The perfect companion business model to their retail neighbors, Ewa and her Modern Fabrics staff continually remind customers of the quality of vintage furniture. “The older the furniture, the better it’s made. If you already own a piece you love, and it’s comfortable and fits your space,

you should definitely recover it,” she adds, pointing out bolts of fabric from linen, wool, and tweed, to rich velvet and mohair.

The Modern Fabrics team can connect you with expert workrooms in the Lake Norman area, and they will gladly walk you through the entire upholstery, pillow, or drapery-making process.

“As a modern society, we always buy, buy, buy, but we don’t create!” says Ewa. “But an older piece of furniture that’s recovered with love and care, now that tells a story. Choose a classic sofa or chair from Charlotte Vintage or your grandmother’s house, then select the fabric from us. You’ll have something in your home that is truly one-of-a-kind.”

Both Charlotte Vintage Furniture and Modern Fabrics are celebrating anniversaries in March, so stay tuned for details on their social media pages!

The Modern Fabrics family can’t wait to meet you, at 15435 NC-73, Huntersville, NC, 704-740-9676. Shop their online store at modernfabrics.com, email service@modern-fabrics.com, and follow them on Instagram @modernfabrics. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

to a New Lease on Fun!

If you’re a regular at The Landing on Lake Norman, you definitely know that glorious feeling of being tucked away in a remote cove of a secluded beach, where cares simply drift away.

No worries if you’re a newcomer —getting here is easy by land or by lake. Once you’re here, there’s no shortage of fun and fabulous food, with both indoor and open-air dining. And for the entire family, there’s built-in entertainment!

“The Landing is about having fun and enjoying life,” says new owner, Dustin Keith, of the popular Lake Norman spot that first opened in 1993.

Having owned Aquaventure Boat Club for 14 years —and operating a fleet of over 50 boats for use by private members —Dustin had dreamed of having his own place on the water, rather than just leasing boat slips. And he’d always envisioned the perfect laid-back “hang out” around the lake.

“I had been eating at The Landing with my family for years,” he explains. “I knew it was a sign when I found out it was for sale. It was something we prayed about, and felt it was exactly right for us.”

Combining excellent food, festive drinks, and all the elements of a true kids’ paradise, Dustin realized another personal vision.

“I wanted to recreate some of the amazing little restaurants and marinas my family and I had visited while boating in the Abacos,” he adds. “I was also a commercial pilot before I opened Aquaventure Boat Club, so I wanted to somehow incorporate an aviation theme into the restaurant as well.”

In other words, Dustin dreamed of the place where you can take two hours out of your day, kick back and relax, and feel like you’ve escaped reality for a bit. To complement that, the overall theme has evolved into fast casual dining with a chef’s touch!

“We offer a wide variety of cuisines with something for everyone,” says Chef Drew Moseley. “Some of the new favorites on the re-designed menu are definitely the Queso Birria Street Tacos: braised chuck roast in an aromatic blend of Hispanic ingredients, served on a seared corn tortilla with mozzarella cheese.”

The roasted Brussels sprout basket with bacon and balsamic glaze is also a crowd favorite, as well as hand-cut filets and ribeyes butchered in house, grilled at a searing 500 degrees, and basted with rendered beef fat. The staff is also currently working on a signature drink—appropriately named the Crash Landing!

“All of our food is scratch made in-house, with a lot of love from our wonderful staff,” adds Drew.

The Landing WELCOME

The Landing

Both Dustin and regular customers say they’ve never seen a restaurant their kids loved more than The Landing. There’s an enormous sand pit to play in, a tropical Sno shaved ice stand right on the water, a pirate-themed arcade featuring video games and vending machines, and the perfect spot to feed fish right there on the dock.

“We occasionally light camp fires and make s’mores while hosting movie nights, too!” adds Dustin. And who can say no to a ride on the Tiki Boat Water Taxi (kids of all ages, included!) The return of live music to The Landing has also been a priority, so Dustin and Drew (who has experience as a musical artist) plan to have live music every Thursday and Saturday this coming season. Plans are also underway for a Pig Pickin’ and an incredible Oktoberfest celebration!

“I believe the culture for small business at Lake Norman has always been really positive,” says Dustin. “It’s a place where with a little vision and a lot of hard work, I have been able to create a destination that I think makes a difference in a lot of families lives.”

Arrive by land or by boat, and come enjoy the amazing food and fun The Landing has to offer Lake Norman residents! The restaurant is located at 4491 Slanting Bridge Road, Sherrills Ford, NC, 828-478-5944, and online at landingatthelake.com. Follow them on Instagram @thelandingatthelake for event updates and menu specials. Hours are Wednesday through Friday 4:00 p.m.9:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Home Heart & Soul THE DESIGN OF EVERDAY Life

You’ll feel instantly comfortable when you walk into the lovely Home Heart & Soul—partly because you’ll be greeted by adorable shop dog Enzo —and also because the boutique is set in an actual home. That’s what sets this unique shopping and design experience apart!

Built in 1927, this landmark house on the historic east side of Cornelius is where owner Lori Savio curates home décor and fine gifts, displayed just as you would in your own home.

Both Enzo and his talented owner take their roles very seriously!

“The merchandising and placement of our home decor gives people insight into what I can do in their home,” says Lori. “It’s a segue into my business, which includes design consultation, custom window treatments, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, and everything in between. We truly are a one-stop shop for everything you need to create the perfect home.”

It’s easy to see why her business philosophy, summed up in a single phrase, is “love where you live and make it your own!”

“The design business is always evolving,” explains Lori. “I pride myself in creating spaces that not only reflect my client’s personality and lifestyle, but change the way they use their home. I love having the opportunity to go into people’s homes and make a difference in the way they dwell and live each day.”

Lori stepped right into the design world out of high school, and encouraged by her father who worked in the furniture industry, she was able to secure a job as an assistant for a small design firm in Florida. She took community college classes and studied at the Art Institute of Florida, finding her true passion and discovering her intuitive gift of color coordination, scale, and knowing exactly what a space needs.

“Some things you can teach, but that gift I believe is something you are born with,” says Lori. “I started my business at age 25, and have been in that same industry now for close to 40 years!”

For many years, this charming Cornelius location was a multi-merchant home décor store, where Lori previously leased space for her design business. At the time, she was living in South Carolina, and working to build a clientele in the Lake Norman area. When she learned that business would be closing, Lori found it was the perfect time to begin her own new retail adventure here as well.

Having recently celebrated seven years in the current location, Home Heart & Soul encompasses both Lori’s design business and her retail store, and she leases space to other woman-owned small businesses. The distinctive lines in the store are not sold elsewhere in the Lake Norman area, and she’s proud to feature handmade, one-of-a-kind décor and gifts made by local and nearby artisans.

“I source my decor and furniture directly from manufacturers, and have a private label line of custom upholstery,” adds Lori. “We also create solid wood furniture for clients by using our amazing upholsterers and finishers. If you can imagine it, we can create it!”

Some of her favorite home decor and fine gift lines are Vietri, Pampa Bay, Anne Neilson Home, and Laura Park Designs, and she has also developed signature candle scents for every season with another local woman-owned business (@bellsboxcollective) in Old Town Cornelius. Another perk of Home Heart & Soul is their gift registry —where you can create the home of your dreams by registering for dishes, flatware, glasses and all the essentials needed for entertaining, but also lamps, pillows, rugs, accessories, art, and even furniture. There’s a QR code, as well as a direct link and page on the website for navigating the registry —whether you’re refreshing your current home, or just starting out! You can now shop online at the website, as well as in-store.

With an eye for detail and a heart for authentic results, Lori adds impeccable customer service to her game plan for every home project. Come shop at Home Heart & Soul and see your own dream home unfold!

Home Heart & Soul is located at 20901 Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, NC, 704-892-4743. Follow them online at homeheartandsoul.com, and on Instagram @homeheartsoul. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Monday by appointment.

THE INTRICACIES of THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

According to grammarly.com, the word “sequoia” is often considered to be the most beautiful word in the English language with “euphoria” coming in as number two. Other polls and websites found that the words “sibilance” and “labyrinth” are the most beautiful. As you can see, there are many different versions and opinions on what word deserves this accolade. However, we can all agree on one thing - the English language is beautiful and unique.

Have you ever read or heard a line that stops you in your tracks because of the melody of the words? The English language is made up of millions of words that are created through a combination of letters and sounds, that at times may not even seem possible. Did you know that “enneacontakaienneagon” is actually a word? It can be defined as a shape with 99 sides. These expressions all have a purpose, a meaning. Some are direct and to the point, while others are poetic. Words can be used figuratively or literally. Threaded together, they are turned into memorable sayings, sentences, paragraphs, stories, and much more. They give details and open doors to new worlds and forms of communication, positively and negatively. In the end, let’s face it - words have power. They are magical and have the ability to change perspectives and thoughts.

The English language has always fascinated me. I guess that is why you can say I am an English Language Arts teacher. I love guiding students and myself to a deeper understanding of a sentence or paragraph’s meaning. This can oftentimes be challenging, as English is one of the more difficult languages to learn, compared to the Romance languages, such as Spanish and French. It is a blending of Anglo-Saxon dialects, Latin words and dialects, and dialects from southern Denmark and the Netherlands. Add in structure, grammar, phonemes, odd rules, and inconsistencies - the language is tough. For example, the word “be” and “bee” both sound the same, but are spelt differently with two different meanings. A person can go their entire lifetime without knowing all of the words in the English language. Yet, there are a few fun facts that help show the intricacies of the language.

• “I am” and “Go!” are the shortest complete sentences.

• A pangram sentence consists of all 26 letters of the English language.

• Just to add to the complexity of the language, there are ghost words. This type of word was created due to a printing error in the dictionary and is nonexistent.

• A new word is added to the dictionary every two hours, making 4,000 new words by the time the year ends.

• Crutch words have no meaning or provide no value when added to a sentence. We repeat them often. Examples include “honestly,” and “basically”.

• Pilots have to use English to speak and identify themselves, no matter their native language.

• The most commonly used letter is “e”. 11% of the language is just this letter.

• Currently, only two words end in “-gry” - “angry” and “hungry”.

• Also, there are only four words with the ending “-dous”hazardous, horrendous, stupendous, and tremendous.

• “Long time no see” is said to be a literal translation of a Native American or Chinese phrase (origins unknown) and is not grammatically correct.

• The word “happy” is used three times more often than “sad,” making English one of the happiest languages in the world.

• 67 countries have stated that English is their official language.

• Some of our words were invented by William Shakespeare. This list includes blushing, birthplace, lackluster, bandit, swagger, uncomfortable, and many more. We can also thank Shakespeare for phrases, such as “in a pickle,” “love is blind,” and “wild goose chase”.

The English language is full of twists and turns. It is composed of words that take our breath away with individualized sounds. So, the next time you read something, whether a book, magazine article, or a short description, stop and reflect on how a few simple letters can create such meaning and take on a life of their own.

Laura Rizzetta

As Executive Vice President of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce, Laura Rizzetta has plenty of chances to promote lake life on a daily basis—and her first instinct is always to celebrate the beautiful sunsets.

“That’s my favorite thing about the lake,” she says. “I also love the small town feel of downtown Cornelius, and how connected Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson have become.”

One of Laura’s Chamber of Commerce duties is developing small business assistance programs, a crucial element in expanding the communities around the lake. She also coordinates education programs, event sponsorships, and marketing activities.

Originally from New Bern, NC, Laura spent 27 years in the banking industry and moved to the Lake Norman area from Columbia, SC, in 2014. She’s the proud mother of three grown children: Drew Nicole who lives in Asheville with her husband and Laura’s two grandchildren, Kate and Henry, a son, Mark, who lives in Columbia, SC, and daughter, Ellie, who lives here in Cornelius. When she’s not talking about the finer points of our area, Laura is a fan of crafting, hiking, reading, and spending relaxing hours at her mountain house—which definitely includes quality time with her two dogs, Lucy and Zoey.

Having lived in the Mooresville area for over 30 years, Leslie Reid speaks from the heart when she shares thoughts on living near Lake Norman.

“I feel like we have a slice of heaven here,” she says. Leslie recently joined the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce as Vice President of Investor Relations Development, having previously worked as the Director of Pet Pilgrimage Crematory & Memorials in Mooresville.

Born in Atlanta, GA, and a graduate of the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!), Leslie knows first hand the strong sense of community that makes the Lake Norman area so special. While her two children now live in Charlotte, they were both raised on the waters of Lake Norman.

Leslie is dedicated to hiking, kayaking, running, and yoga—and anything she can participate in that includes her beloved dog, Remy.

“Our area is a great place to raise kids and pets!” says Leslie. She also loves being surrounded by so many small businesses that offer flavor and flair to the Lake Norman area.

As for that slice of heaven she mentions, Leslie is quick to point out the mountains to the west of us, and the coast to the east—pretty perfect on all accounts!

Karen Koutsky

Like most of us, Denver resident and Tai Chi instructor Karen Koutsky had to shift gears a bit in 2020, in order to continue following her passion.

Her free, daily Tai Chi Zoom class was launched March 18, 2020, when the country went into a pandemic lockdown. Karen had previously taught in-person classes at Denver Health and Fitness.

“It was a way to connect with former in-person class attendees in the Lake Norman area,” says Karen. “Denver Health and Fitness promoted the online option to their members, and everyone was invited to share the Zoom link with family and friends. It quickly grew by word of mouth!

Still going strong, Karen reached a milestone by completing her 1,000th Tai Chi Zoom class on Wednesday, January 18, 2023! Quite a feat—and she has no plans to slow down.

“Because of the community we’ve created, class will continue indefinitely,” Karen says. “While many have done hundreds and hundreds of classes, new people are welcome to join any time, because Tai Chi is slow, repetitive, and easy to follow!”

Beloved as a great boost for the immune system, Tai Chi also offers many other health benefits. As of this writing, more than 500 people have signed up for the seven-day a week, half-hour class, with an average of 50 people attending at 9:00 a.m. daily.

A Lake Norman resident for the past eight years, Karen spent three decades in the high-stress world of television news, and found Tai Chi the perfect outlet to nourish her mind, body, and soul.

“I discovered Tai Chi online, and instantly thought everyone can and should be doing this!” she says.

Besides her focus on Tai Chi and meditation, she winds down by

enjoying watching nature around the lake. This laid-back lifestyle suits her, and she’s also learned to play the mountain dulcimer—joining a group called Denver Sweet Strings.

As for celebrating 1,000 classes, live every morning from her living room in Denver, Karen says she never saw that coming! “I was surprised when we hit 100!”

Denver resident and Zoom attendee Kate Cameron has been a major “influencer”—spreading the word and recruiting new class members. While most are local, a few are from as far away as Oregon and Arizona.

“Every time the Tai Chi class meets it’s a celebration of community, connection, and healthy practices,” says Kate. “The class promotes strength, flexibility, balance, and general health. Karen is a delight as an instructor, bringing commitment to joy and a Tai Chi practice in each and every class!”

Paula Hartman, from The Villages of Denver, started Tai Chi pre-Covid with Karen at Denver Health and Fitness, and has been in class for most of the 1,000 meetings! And when Karen had surgery last fall, classes were able to continue, thanks to Paula jumping in and leading the group.

“Karen’s Tai Chi class began as something intriguing for me to discover a new kind of exercise,” Paula explains. “Not only is Tai Chi about the body’s energy, but over the past five years it has become a community of support and well-being. Karen has faithfully -- and very positively— maintained a means for people to come together for healthcare, and to have fun!”

Truly blending health and community, Karen and her class end each session saying ‘Haola’ (‘How-la’)—meaning “All is Well!” What an inspired way to move on with your day!

BLACKENED SALMON

For this month, I wanted to share a delicious healthy recipe that is on the weekly lineup every week in our house—Blackened Salmon. I’ve tried grilling salmon, smoking salmon, even baking in the oven and air frying but blackening it is by far the best tasting way in my opinion.

This isn’t really BBQ or grilling and can either be done on a cast iron skillet (or nonstick, stainless steel, whatever you prefer) or a griddle. I love cooking this recipe on my Blackstone Griddle. Any chance I get to cook outside and have less dishes to clean up inside after, is a win in my book. I’m able to blacken the salmon and cook veggies on the side all on one cooking tool and just have one thing to clean up afterwards.

For this recipe, I like getting a pretty large wild caught salmon filet but farm raised works fine too. In my opinion, wild caught tastes much better.

BLACKENING SEASON INGREDIENTS

• 1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika

• 1 teaspoon light brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• ¾ Tablespoon garlic powder

• ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

• ½ teaspoon dried thyme

• ½ teaspoon dried oregano

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Mix seasoning ingredients together in a small bowl.

2. Pat salmon dry with a paper towel, leave skin on.

3. Rub salmon down with some olive oil to help the seasoning stick.

4. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture all over the salmon filet evenly and pat it down nicely so the seasoning sticks.

5. Heat skillet/griddle to high heat—no cooking oil needed.

6. Once your cooking surface is nice and hot (a good way to confirm is to drop a tiny bit of water on and you want to see it dance around) place salmon skin side up and let cook for 3-4 minutes.

7. Flip salmon (skin side down) and cook for an additional 6-7 minutes or until your desired internal temperature is reached (I like pulling it around 130-135° internal)

but it’s okay if you want to take it all the way up to 145° internal.

8. While I’m blackening the salmon I like to cook some diced up zucchini with some salt, pepper and soy sauce on the griddle.

9. Serve the salmon with some white rice, veggie of choice and add more soy sauce, sriracha or some Japanese BBQ sauce to elevate the flavors even more. My favorite sauce for this meal is Bachans Hot & Spicy Japanese BBQ sauce (the regular Bachans is great too, and this sauce can be found at Costco and some other stores, such as Ace Hardware, Academy or local butcher shops).

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE: AMAZON RIVER

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN SOMEONE MENTIONS THE AMAZON RIVER? FOR ME, IT’S KIND OF A DARK RIVER SURROUNDED BY A VERY HEAVY JUNGLE; LIKE I HAVE SEEN MANY TIMES IN TARZAN MOVIES.

What we found was a huge River, over 4,000 miles long and several miles wide that passes through three countries, Peru, Columbia and Brazil. It can be a couple of hundred feet deep, to only two feet under the keel of our cruise ship at times. They use river pilots to travel the river because of the shifting sand bars. We were able to go up the river to a city called Manaus. This is a real city with a population of more than 100,000 people. This city is about 900 nautical miles up the river.

Shifting sandbars can be a real problem on the river. In fact, when we entered the Amazon River from the ocean, we had to wait for high tide. And as we made our way up river, the river pilots made us anchor one time because they did not want us crossing the sandbar at night.

We anchored at Manaus, Brazil for three days. This gave us the opportunity to take the Tender boat ashore and transfer to different excursions. One excursion put us on a boat with two decks... we toured the river, then transferred to a smaller vessel. This brought us off the river and into the marsh land. We came into an interior lake where all the houses were floating. We then transferred to smaller motorized canoes. We took a trip around the lake and saw jungle vegetation, exotic birds and heard bird calls. We even saw water lilies that were more than 3 feet in diameter. What really blew my mind was when I saw a lightbulb in some houses. There was no sign of electric power or poles anywhere else.

While on the river, we were so excited to see the famed pink river dolphins. They are really pink, and I am not sure why, there are too many varied tales explaining them.

There were many tankers and freighters at anchor in the harbor waiting to be unloaded or loaded.

The city looked prosperous with some tall buildings and some construction going on. The people were friendly, but most spoke Portuguese and no English.

My view of the Amazon River was restored after we left Manaus. We started going east on the river, remember, we are on or close to the Equator. We anchored off of Boca De Valeria, Brazil, and tendered ashore. This is what I expected. No tall buildings, in fact, no permanent buildings. There was just a church, a schoolhouse and about 90 locals looking for a dollar. Many of them had pets that I had never seen before i.e., sloths, parakeets, parrots, miniature alligators, and all they wanted was a dollar if you took their picture. We were told in advance to have plenty of dollars available.

The people seemed very happy. The kids all seemed happy and playing. They all were very polite, had beautiful smiles, dark skin and were great, maybe because they closed the school while we were there.

It was easy to see why Brazil had done well in the World Cup.Every child was practicing, and they were good. One small boy had the ball, and no one could get it away.

It makes you wonder how they can be so happy and content and not have any modern conveniences. Or is that the answer?

HOW TO DIFFUSE AN ESCALATING SITUATION WITH Grace

Conflicts are a part of life. Nothing can be smooth sailing all the time. If everyone had the same ideas, beliefs, and goals, and agreed all the time, what would be the fun in that? Our differences make us stronger as a group and a lot more interesting.

And yet, sometimes our differences can create division. Maybe a regular conversation goes off the rails and turns into a heated argument. Maybe a slight misunderstanding ends up in a cold war where two longtime friends just stop communicating. How do we handle this? How do we navigate this tricky territory and get back to the good place? It’s

WORK TO IDENTIFY the real reason behind the problem and stay in control of your language, your tone, and your body posture.

ACKNOWLEDGE that the other person’s point of view is important (they may have a lot invested in their reason for standing up for their views), but humbly ask them to consider your perspective.

REALIZE THAT THERE DOESN’T NEED TO BE A WINNER, sometimes sharing your ideas can be the whole point. If you point this out, the person fighting so hard to win the argument may look at it in a different light.

important to understand how to diffuse an argument before it gets too out of hand so that the relationship does not have to suffer the fallout.

First off, resolving any conflicts requires humility, empathy, and compassion. You must be willing to consider the other person’s thoughts and feelings and not just think about your own. This is a skill you learn over time and with practice.

HERE ARE SOME WINNING WAYS YOU CAN DEESCALATE A SITUATION BEFORE IT BECOMES OUT OF CONTROL:

If there is something keeping you and your friend, colleague, partner at odds, ask if there is a GOOD TIME to talk it through with the goal of coming to a resolution. In this scenario, try to convey your feelings with compassion for the other person’s point of view. Ask questions about how they are feeling and what you can do to make them feel better.

FIND COMMON GROUND. In any disagreement, there is bound to be something to compromise on or common ground to settle on. It is better to sit together and discuss the challenges while agreeing on the specific points. Work at it until you find these common areas.

We all know that during a heated argument is not the best time to solve a problem and for that reason, there are techniques that have been developed to help you learn to argue more productively. One of these techniques involves shifting your focus from the words and behaviors of the person you are arguing with to your own words and behaviors. You are the only person you have control over and all you can do in these moments of intense conflict is soften your approach and move to a more humble, vulnerable and open position.

LISTEN MORE THAN YOU TALK. Start off the conversation with the goal of letting the person speak their piece. If you find the conversation veering into an area that is not productive, speak up and suggest a reframing of the conversation to get back on track. When the other person talks, make sure they know you heard what they said. You can do this by mirroring what they said back to them.

If you’ve spoken out of turn or spoken harshly, SAY YOU’RE SORRY. Saying you’re sorry and asking for a chance to do better can stop an argument in its tracks. Doing this as soon as you realize it’s necessary will get you back to a good place in the relationship and give you the opportunity to make things better.

It’s easier said than done, but when you find yourself in the midst of an argument, tell yourself to RELAX Try to calm yourself down by taking some deep breaths, leaving the room or counting backwards from 10. From a different frame of mind, you can address your friend, colleague or partner from a more loving place, with a calmer voice, and one that does not instigate or provoke them so much. From this position, your brain is functioning better, you are more centered and there is no doubt you will respond more warmly and your conversation will be more productive and less adversarial.

TWO QUESTIONS THAT CAN

TRANSFORM YOUR MARRIAGE

And devotion comes from framing your desires, talking to your spouse about what you both hope to become in this area of serving, then moving towards one another with intentional acts of service that produce intimacy and connection.

It had been three difficult years, yet as I tied the last knot on the rope, thinking, “I will not give up on us, on her,” something shifted. I realized I couldn’t change her, but I could change myself. I can change how I move toward her. I can change how I respond and not react. I am in control of what I can do daily to love her fully. I made a decision that night as I lay inches from her, yet felt miles apart. I knew what I must do.

The next morning, as she walked into the kitchen I asked her, “How can I serve you today? How can I make today better for you?” It was not met with excitement, yet these two small powerful questions would transform our marriage, and I believe they can do the same for you when asked and acted upon daily. You see, marriages don’t die in the big moments; they don’t become beautiful overnight. It’s in all the small moments, the small daily decisions, the small acts of service, and the small questions asked that can lead to a marriage falling apart or prepare a marriage for the BIG moments that inevitably will come. If I looked at all the small moments in your marriage, how you serve one another, your intentionality, then what picture would it paint, what would it reveal and say about your marriage, where it has been, and where it’s headed? Everything we do weaves through our marriage, knitting us together or pulling us apart.

Learning to serve one another is one of those threads that will knit you together and be a catalyst for healing in your marriage. Here is where you start, with a desire and devotion to serve your spouse. Desire first, then devotion to invest in one another daily. And desire and devotion are not the same thing. You can have the desire to work in and on your marriage, great. Yet desire will only produce change if it’s married with devotion.

Here is what we know to be true and have seen when working with couples in this area. Successful marriages do consistently what others do occasionally. I’ll say it again, successful marriages do consistently what others do occasionally. It means having an everyday marriage with a commitment to be an everyday servant. Let’s break down the last sentence: an everyday marriage is one where you work to improve your marriage daily. You commit to serving, loving, and pursuing one another in small and big ways. An everyday servant is someone who looks to serve their spouse each day intentionally. You look for ways to move toward and invest in your spouse each day- not only on the days when there is something you want or need, to butter them up to soften the blow of your mistake!

It does not have to be complicated; it implies lifting your head and seeing your spouse’s needs. Becoming an everyday servant is asking the question, “How can I best serve you today?” If that’s cleaning the kitchen, helping him with a project or picking up the kids for her, you do it, happily. Listen, I’m just like you; life happens. I get busy and, at times, self-focused. What I’m about to say sounds terrible, but it would be easier to take a bullet for her, because that’s a one-time thing. Bang bang. Done. Compared to doing the dishes every day, helping with the laundry when I’d rather be doing something fun for me. Serving is not always easy or what comes naturally. Yet, over time we can build a habit of serving our spouse, and soon they will ask you“How can I make today better for you?”

A March to Remember

A MARCH TO REMEMBER

HERE’S A TRIO OF REASONS TO LOVE THE MONTH OF MARCH:

• Weather: “In like a lion, out like a lamb”

• Sports: March Madness

• Celebration: A day when everyone is Irish!

But wait, there is so much more. As we were poignantly reminded during the pandemic, knowing how to create our own meaning and conjure our own fun is a skill that we can draw on at any time. And guess what? Ranging from the significant to the silly and everything in-between, there is something good to honor or indulge in every day of March 2023.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Here’s my thought: get a jump-start by going out and buying a large calendar or downloading and printing out a template. As you peruse the Days of March, decide which you will have some fun with or spread some special joy on, and mark that on your old-time calendar. Now take things a step further by making it a family affair. When you do, you’ll teach the kiddos a valuable life lesson in how to create meaning and joy. You’ll also make it a March to remember. Spoiler alert: lots of food-related ideas in this rich sampling of days!

Tour de Boutique

WHAT IS THE LKN TOUR DE BOUTIQUE?

The team at Forsyth Magazines knows a thing or two about shopping, and more specifically, shopping trips. Since 2010, we’ve hosted over 15 shopping events! We love turning a regular Saturday into an extraordinary Saturday with a non-stop, shop-til-you-drop adventure! The LKN Tour de Boutique is a self-guided tour of 10-12 local boutiques. These boutiques roll out the red carpet!

We all know the value and importance of shopping locally. It helps stimulate the local economy, creates jobs, and brings tremendous value to our community. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that you won’t want to miss!

IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?

Tour de boutique is a self-guided tour, so you can shop at your own pace.

WILL THERE BE ROUTE OPTIONS?

Yes! We will provide shoppers with several route options depending on which side of town they would like to start.

DO YOU HAVE TO VISIT THE STORES IN A CERTAIN ORDER?

No! You are welcome to go rogue and create your own route. Our routes are purely suggestions to give you some added efficiency.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

$50!

WHAT DOES THE COST INCLUDE?

Your $50 registration fee includes an LKN simple modern 40 oz Trek tumbler cup plus a swag bag with some other goodies and coupons. (And you may even be one of the lucky ones with a hidden gift card!) There will also be exclusive specials, giveaways and/or discounts at all participating boutiques, door prize tickets, and most importantly, a day full of fun and quality time with your girlfriends!

WHEN WILL YOU RELEASE A LIST OF PARTICIPATING STORES?

Stay tuned to social media—@lknmagazine on Instagram and Facebook.

WHAT TIME DOES IT START?

Many stores adjust their hours to accommodate

the Tour, although 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. is the typical time frame. Since it’s self-guided, you can shop at your own pace and spend 20 minutes in one store and an hour in another. We will be sure to communicate open and closing times of each boutique with participants before the event.

ARE YOU REQUIRED TO VISIT ALL THE STORES?

No, it is not required, but the more stores you visit, the more chances you will have to win door prizes!! You can enter a drawing at every store that you visit, and we have a special GRAND PRIZE that you can only enter when you visit all the participating stores.

DO PEOPLE USUALLY SIGN UP WITH FRIENDS OR INDIVIDUALLY?

BOTH! We have seen three generations sign up together (mother, daughter, granddaughter), we’ve seen groups of friends, co-workers, sisters, cousins, AND, absolutely, people can sign up individually. We know some people prefer shopping alone, and that is totally fine! We can assure you the stores will make you feel welcome all day long!

SHOULD WE MARK OUR CALENDARS NOW FOR THE FALL TOUR DE BOUTIQUE IN WINSTON-SALEM?

Yes! The tentative date for the fall tour will be on October 7th, in Winston-Salem.

“In a world where everyone is shopping online, it was awesome to go to actual stores with your best friends and be treated like VIPs while doing it!” - Meredith

“My friends who started the day out not knowing each other, became friends by the end of the day! We had a blast!” - Emily B.

“Tour de Boutique introduced me to stores I didn’t know before I moved to NC. Now I’m a regular of the stores and the Tour de Boutique! Love the customer service that local boutiques offer.” - Barbara M.

I RETURNED TO ITALY: Here’s What Changed

In November 2021, I took a two-week solo trip to Southern Italy, which lived up to every expectation I had after nearly three years of planning (thanks to COVID-19). Almost exactly a year later in November 2022, I returned to southern Italy - Matera and Lecce, to be exact - because Italy continued to tug at my soul. Although I wasn’t exactly entering the country with the rose-colored, inexperienced glasses I had been wearing the year prior, making a repeat trip to two special Italian towns carried new adventures.

Italy

The Language. Whether it was the mediocre attempts at practicing Italian that I made sparingly in my free time using textbooks and apps like Duolingo over the last year, or my obsession with researching places to see, how to get around, and most importantly, reading local restaurant menus in Italian, I found that my ability to speak and comprehend the language had somehow improved. I was better equipped to order a coffee and carry on basic conversations with locals than I was during my first trip. In fact, a large motivating factor for me to return to Italy (and take more trips in the future) was my desire to embark on a language-learning journey. Although I am nowhere near fluent in the language, I was impressed by how things seemingly “clicked” in just 12 months of minimal language-learning effort.

My Confidence. The anticipation and excitement I felt before my first trip to Italy was unmatched, and quite honestly, made it hard for me to function as an adult and focus on anything else in my life. As each day passed and my trip became closer, I felt more and more like a child on Christmas Eve night. This time around, I was less antsy and more level-headed about what to expect. I was no longer nervous about using the trains to get around, and when I did accidentally miss a train connection enroute to Matera and ended up temporarily stranded in the small city of Gravina in Puglia, I was far from panicked. Thanks to my previous experience in the Puglia region, in addition to my fervent (and sometimes manic) research habits on Google Maps, I knew Gravina had quite a few sights to offer in the short two hours before I could take another train to Matera. I was also astounded by the kindness of a young girl at the train station in Gravina, who spoke just enough English to be able to tell me which connection to take on the next train, as well as a friendly elderly man I encountered on the street who chuckled after

he saw my failed attempt at petting a street cat. While the “highs” of this Italy trip were not quite as high as they were in 2021, my slower itinerary and mental clarity allowed me to more deeply immerse myself in the culture and reality of life in Southern Italy.

Scratching an Itch. Before and after my first trip, my life revolved around traveling or the pursuit thereof. My interests in anything else were on hold, which greatly impacted my financial and romantic decisions. After my second trip, I needed a bit of time to decompress, and didn’t feel an immediate urge to plan a third trip. As a matter of fact, I tried to start planning again weeks later, but nothing was piquing my interest like before. As unsettling as it is to think that something I have based my life around for the last four years is possibly losing its luster in my eyes, whether temporarily or permanently, it feels a bit freeing to no longer be a slave to the obsessive thoughts and irresistible urge to travel. If I’m being honest, part of me hopes the desire returns sooner rather than later, but a large part of me wonders if this is God’s way of opening me up to finding fulfillment closer to home.

Migranes

It comes as no surprise that the element that makes up 60 percent of the human body is often the answer to many health issues. While migraines often present themselves for a variety of reasons, being dehydrated is a very common reason for individuals. With society coming and going most of every day, the risk of not drinking enough water and not staying hydrated is actually very common. Bringing a reusable aluminum water bottle is a great way to keep water accessible and at top of mind throughout the day, since its always there. This is actually one of the simplest and least expensive ways to avoid migraines. If it comes down to a taste preference, including cucumber, lemon, melon or another infuser can help increase the desire to drink up.

TIP NO. 2 AVOID TRIGGER FOODS

When migraines are an unfortunate and ongoing part of a person’s life, there tend to be a few patterns that become apparent. One of the most noticeable patterns that can be identified is linked to eating and drinking habits. What’s good here is that once a food or beverage is realized as the culprit, avoiding those things and removing them from your diet can be simple. Over time, studies have proven there are some common migraine causing food categories for people prone to these headaches to avoid. These include processed meats and foods containing nitrates such as hot dogs, cold cuts and bacon. Also, items including MSG, fake dyes and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Too much sodium and caffeine have also been linked as triggers.

MANAGING MIGRAINES WITHOUT MEDICATION

5 Tips to Reduce and Relieve

The head throbbing starts, the aura around the eyes appears, and suddenly everything sounds louder and looks brighter than it should. A migraine has hit.

According to Migraine.com’s most recent statistics, the U.S. reports more than 38 million people suffer from migraines, with the majority

TIP NO. 3 GET ENOUGH SLEEP

of sufferers women: “18 percent of women compared to 6 percent of men.” While there are plenty of migraine medications out there to help ease the pain, sometimes simply making some changes in lifestyle and knowing what to avoid can be the best solution.

Here are five tips to help reduce and relieve migraines naturally:

Believe it or not, not getting enough sleep is one of the most common causes of migraines. It’s interesting to think that sleep is such a difficult thing for people to feel in control of, especially since it’s a necessary part of life. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Lifestyle plays a large part in sleep habits, but there are definitely things that can be done to try and get the right amount of sleep and increase the quality of those hours. Taking time to review each week’s schedule and create a planned schedule that includes bedtimes and wake up times can help, even if not followed accurately each night. The important thing is to aim to be consistent to avoid feeling depleted and exhausted.

TIP NO. 4 INTRODUCE ESSENTIAL OILS

While essential oils have grown in popularity in many American households in the last decade, not everyone knows the positive impact they can have on migraines. The most effective oil scents for migraines Peppermint, Lavender, Chamomile, and Spearmint. When the beginning signs start to present themselves, adding a few drops of oil to the temples or behind the ears can help to ward off the migraine from fully hitting. Additionally, mixing one to three drops of oil mixed with water into a diffuser can create a calming and healing effect in the atmosphere, and help side effects subside. Essential oil products specific for migraines, such as patches and rollerball sticks, are easily found in drugstores and online as well.

While migraines affect both men and women of different body types and body weight, there have been several studies that link both obesity and malnourishment to migraine patients. In 2017, a study was conducted by Dr. B. Lee Peterlin, Director of Headache Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore that proved this connection. Research during the study found that “obese people were 27 percent more likely to have migraines than people who were at a normal weight and those who were underweight were 13 percent more likely to have migraines.” Many migraine sufferers notice a difference in the frequency of their headaches and the severity once getting to a healthy

Napping is Good for You

THE BEST NAPPING HOW TO’S

IF YOU READ LAST MONTH’S ARTICLE “NAPPING IS GOOD FOR YOU,” OR HAVE PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED THE BENEFITS OF NAPPING, YOU MAY BE CURIOUS ABOUT NAPPING “BEST PRACTICES.” WHILE THERE IS NO ABSOLUTE LIST OF DO’S AND DON’TS, THERE ARE SOME SPECIFIC NAPPING HABITS FOCUSED ON “WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW LONG” THAT HAVE PROVEN EFFECTIVE FOR MANY. MORE SPECIFICALLY, YOU MAY WONDER:

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE A NAP?

Most experts suggest planning your nap between 1 and 3 pm. If you try to nap earlier than 1 pm you might find that you are not sleepy enough to settle into a nap. On the other hand, by napping after 3 pm you could jeopardize a good night’s sleep —something you don’t want to do! I have found that the best time for me to nap easily and well is just after eating a healthy lunch. This was a habit I developed while our mini poodle, Miss Noelle, was still with us. If I remained typing away at my computer after lunch, she—a bona fide napping expert — offered up a persistent stare that reminded me it was time for “our” nap! Keep in mind also, that your schedule, age, and medication use should be considerations. Getting the input of your doctor might be helpful.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO TAKE A NAP?

Yes, your very own bed is certainly an option, and certainly my favorite. Others prefer more of a “designated” napping spot, like a sofa, or a large, comfy chair. Either way, make sure it’s dark, on the cool side, and quiet. As lawn crews abound for many months of the year here, I often wear ear plugs to drown out that persistent noise. You might even add an eye mask or an essential oils diffuser to take your napping environment to the next level. I even know a few people who schedule naps —real naps! —in their cars on long trips. So, consider pulling over in a safe spot, getting cozy, putting on your shades and giving it a try!

Jeff Rodgers, DMD, a certified sleep expert with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Sleep and Breathing Academy suggests “For most people, the 20- to 30-minute ‘power nap’ is the sweet spot for boosting alertness and focus.” The Mayo Clinic recommends naps that range from a mere 10 to 20 minutes as these are less likely to cause drowsiness upon waking. They also suggest giving yourself a few moments of “re-entry” before diving into tasks or activities. But if it’s a “power nap” that you’re after, one that will boost your alertness and focus, go for those recommended 20 to 30 minutes of nap time. And take note if, when you exceed 30 minutes, you experience grogginess. If so, you’ll know to cut back on the length of your nap next time.

ANY VARIATIONS ON THE THEME?

Well, yes! It’s the “coffee nap,” which some folks swear by. Simply drink a cup of coffee just before settling in for your nap. By the time you wake up, the caffeine will have kicked in and you will feel refreshed and productive. As someone who has a rough time falling asleep, I think I’lI pass on this nap variation!

Loyal to Local: Untouchables

CELEBRATING FOOD & COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Amazing food and a fun, casual atmosphere is a given at The Untouchables in Denver, NC: that’s wings, burgers, and the truly incredible pizza that makes them famous. All that feasting is a wonderful way to bring friends and family together!

But there’s also deep-founded community spirit that circles around this local favorite spot, and owner Scott Gilleland takes that spirit and community camaraderie very seriously.

Scott began his career at The Untouchables as a busboy in 1987—four years after the restaurant opened in 1983—and as its owner, he is continuing the tradition of delicious cuisine and impeccable service the Lake Norman community has come to love.

Everything on the menu at The Untouchables is prepared in-house, following their own recipes—including their mouth-watering pizza crust which they make all day long! The freshest vegetables are cut daily, and their cheese is also ground and blended every single day. Besides those well-known wings, pizza, and delicious burgers, the lunch and dinner menu is also well-stocked with a popular salad bar, house-made salads and dressings, and fresh fruits and vegetables. That covers the taste buds of everyone in your dining party!

The much-loved restaurant also serves up good vibes around the community, and Scott and his staff are honored to support local organizations. That is an effort he’s been devoted to since the restaurant first opened. “I’m very proud we are able to support our local schools and churches through donations and hosting spirit nights at the restaurant,” says Scott. Police officers, EMS, and firefighters also receive discounts, as a way of showing appreciation.

The support and encouragement of a local business plays a big role when it comes to school improvements and inspiring students.

“The Bandys’ community is so lucky to have The Untouchables team in our corner,” says Brandon Harbinson, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of Bandys High School.

“The restaurant always steps in to provide opportunities to raise funds through spirit nights, as well as donating food to many of our programs. Scott and Hope are so good to us!”

Check out the list of Spirit Nights planned for the month of March—and mark your calendar to enjoy some wonderful food, while helping out within your community!

Self Care Calendar

3 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO CREATE A

SELF CARE CALENDAR AND WHAT TO INCLUDE

AS WOMEN WE ARE USED TO SCHEDULING ALL KINDS OF THINGS ON OUR CALENDAR. JUST THINK ABOUT HOW MANY THINGS WE INCLUDE ON AN AVERAGE MONTH FROM WORK DEADLINES, DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS, SCHOOL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES, FAMILY BIRTHDAYS, CHURCH SERVICES, VOLUNTEERING, AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE!

When was the last time you added a “self care” item to your calendar? And I’m not just talking about a haircut!

Real self care goes beyond just time spent on the things we consider “maintenance.” It’s about the things you spend time on that are for nobody but yourself and give you that mental break in your routine. The things that don’t feel like tasks but instead feed the soul and give us a momentary lull in the constant momentum that is life. PhD at Alliant International University, Anabel Bejarano, shares in her study “Self Care for Women: Now Not Later” that “women need to nurture themselves emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally.”

So, again, when was the last time you added a “self care” item to your calendar? What about an entire calendar devoted to it? Now we’re talking!

Here are three reasons why you need to stop what you’re doing and create a self care calendar for yourself!

#1 Prioritizing yourself is hard, putting it in writing helps. Think about how hard it was just to find time to read this article? Women tend to carry a lot each day and putting themselves first doesn’t always come naturally or feel like a priority. When you create a calendar that includes both big and small acts of self care it’s a lot more difficult to ignore. Being able to see your weekly work or family tasks right up with the tasks meant only for you helps them to have an equal playing field. Get your partner and family on board in advance if you know you’re scheduling something you need help on and making sure you aren’t needed during that time.

#2 What we plan, we have a better chance at seeing through.

Life has a way of shifting and shaking things up! So often parts of our day that we planned, such as working out, making tacos for dinner, writing pages of a memoir, etc. get moved around when other things happen. The appointments and reminders on our calendar, however, tend to feel a little more concrete than those other “to-do list” type plans. Schedule something around the same time each week and each month to make sure it happens.

#3 Self care can improve your day (your week, your month, or even your year).

While the immediate benefits of taking time to nurture yourself can often be felt, it’s even more important to realize the long term life benefits of actively practicing and incorporating self care into your life. Several studies show that women who make self care a regular practice may see benefits such as lower stress levels, lower body mass index, better physical wellness and a reduced risk of depression, chronic health issues, some cancers, and heart disease.

Here are 20 ideas to get started on your own self care calendar! Choose some ideas from the list and come up with some of your own and pick out a few dates and times on the calendar to begin scheduling these out with intention! Remember, the chances are that if you don’t schedule it in advance, it won’t happen!

1. Coffee at your favorite local spot

2. Go for a massage

3. Shop for something you don’t need

4. Apply a facemask

5. Attend a webinar/workshop of interest

6. Listen to a favorite album from your younger days

7. Bubble bath with the works

8. Pick a craft project off Pinterest

9. Meditate for 20 minutes

10. Go for an afternoon walk

11. Order takeout from your favorite place

12. Zoom coffee date with a friend

13. Take a daytime nap

14. Play a board game with girlfriends

15. Spend an hour in nature alone

16. Journal without an objective

17. Write a letter to your younger self

18. Take yourself on a date

19. Listen to a Ted Talk

20. Call an old friend and catch up

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT BEING Irish

It seems as if everyone considers themselves to be just a little bit Irish every year when March 17, St. Patrick’s Day rolls around. From the celebrations to the fanfare, St. Patrick’s Day is a favorite holiday for many people, including those who have Irish ancestry, such as myself.

My family lineage consists of ancestors coming to the United States from Ireland. This part of my family background has interested me most and inspired me to do some research to learn what it really means to be Irish. While digging, I discovered a few fun facts about my heritage, Ireland, and Irish culture in general.

So, as you celebrate St. Patty’s Day with a drink, soda bread, corned beef and cabbage, or whatever your fancy is, test your knowledge of the day and the culture that brought it to you with these facts below.

#1 St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and the person the holiday is named after, isn’t truly Irish. Sorry to burst your bubble, but St. Patrick was born in Great Britain in the 4th century. He was brought to Ireland by Irish pirates who kidnapped him and made him a slave. He discovered his faith while spending time in prison and escaped after six years. As stated in St. Patrick’s own writing, a voice spoke to him in a dream and told him to leave Ireland. He traveled almost 200 miles to the coast and went back to Great Britain. Then, he was told once again to go back to Ireland as a missionary. While there, he became a priest and incorporated traditional Irish rituals into his messages to help convert people to Christianity. He died on March 17, 460 A.D.

#2 More Irish people are living abroad than in Ireland. Today, it is said that about 70 million people claim to be Irish throughout the world.

#3 Only 9-10% of the country is a natural redhead. Commonly associated with being Irish is having red hair.

However, dark brown hair is actually the

#7 Nine signers of the Declaration of Independence had Irish ancestry. These signers were Matthew Thornton, James Smith, George Taylor, George Reed, Charles Carroll, Thomas Lynch, Jr., Thomas McKean, Edward Rutledge, and Charles Thompson.

According to the general public, an Irish person can be characterized as being strong-willed, fiery, loves a good time, and easy going.

1840s and destroyed potato crops and other crops, resulting in the lack of food and people moving elsewhere.

#5

Along with St. Patrick’s Day, the origins and invention of Halloween comes from the Emerald Isle. Going back about 2,000 years, Halloween is similar to the Celtic Samhain Festival, which is usually celebrated at the end of summer on October 31st. People celebrated the event with bonfires and fireworks. They also believed that ghosts would return to the mortal world on October 31st and fires were lit to drive away evil spirits. Costumes were worn to avoid being taken to the underworld from the mortal world. As more Irish people migrated to the United States, their Halloween traditions came with them.

#6 The United States has the most people of Irish descent. About 9.5% or roughly 31.5 million people have Irish blood in them in 2021. 118,539 people living in the United States claimed Ireland as their birthplace and Cook County, Illinois is the nation’s county with the largest Irish American population with about 431,436 people.

#9 The well-known Irish phrase “Top o’ the mornin to ya” isn’t really used any more. I know it is tempting to say (I almost typed it in another sentence in this article), but today, the phrase is considered to be more stereotypical and used when trying to imitate the Irish language—sorry, to again, burst your bubble.

There were many more facts about being Irish that I learned during my research. After reading my findings, I can easily see why people consider themselves to be Irish on March 17th. I think we can all agree that being (even just a little bit) Irish is fun and notable. When you have a moment, research your family’s ancestry and the fun facts surrounding it. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Small Business Spotlight: TBD

LOCAL BUSINESS RECAPS

LKN LOCAL

Owners Anne McGraw and Larisa Kamp love that their small business is designed and printed by LKN locals, for LKN locals! Long-time friends with complementary talents (Anne taught technology and Larisa taught art!), the creative duo started the business because they were hard-pressed to find Lake Norman apparel they wanted to wear themselves. “We wanted soft, flattering pieces that were cute and classic,” says Larisa. “We love fabrics that are garment-dyed or vintage/beach washed so they feel soft and livedin,” says Anne. Larisa, the artist, might sketch out a design idea on paper, then Anne, the graphic designer, will digitize that idea. “We work together on composition and fonts, until we get something that’s just right,” says Larisa. The two want their designs to appeal to anyone who lives around the lake – and loves it as much as they do – and many of their designs are born from customer feedback. It’s been important to keep their operations as local as possible, and they sought out several women-owned businesses in Mooresville and Cornelius who source and screen print for them. The two love living near the lake, and when thinking of a way to give back, they searched for organizations who were committed to protecting the water and wildlife of Lake Norman. The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation and the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists were a perfect fit, and both receive a portion of their proceeds.

A Merle Norman Cosmetics devotee herself since the age of 14, Celeste Driscoll first opened her studio in Denver, NC, in 2007, moved it to Huntersville in 2012, and is now proud to serve her valued clients from the new, larger studio she built in Cornelius in 2020. As a personally owned and operated business, Celeste is proud of her beauty consultants who are trained and dedicated to helping women always select the right products. That goal maintains the company’s mission of personal transformation, starting with its inspirational founder. “Merle Norman was a pioneer in franchising and women-owned businesses,” says Celeste. “I am proud to be part of a 92-year-old American company that has done so much for women! Our founder always believed what sets our company apart from others is our ‘Try Before You Buy’ tradition. Our consultants give makeup lessons, foundation shade checks, and consult on color matches, or simply show clients the best products for their skin and coloring.” Celeste’s favorite part of owning her Merle Norman Cosmetics studio has been the relationships she has formed over the past 15 years. “My hands-on business here in the studio is so important for many women who want to try something new. It’s a matter of seeing, feeling, touching, and trying on!” There’s also a 30-day money back guarantee, the Merle Norman assurance of every customer’s complete satisfaction with how each product makes them feel.

Merle Norman is located at 21030 Catawba Avenue in Cornelius, NC, 704-896-8222. Hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., closed on Sunday.

There’s not a more common tradition at the lake than going for a walk. From the dawn walkers following their dogs, plastic bags in hand, to the high-viz-reflectable-vest-wearing late evening powerwalkers, it is a constant parade of neighbors up and down the street. We live on a long peninsula with one road, so there’s only one path for that traffic to follow. We join this strolling superhighway just about every day, usually with the after-dinner meandering crowd.

Since the route and routine are the same every day, you get used to seeing the same things over and over, and checking in on progress. Here are a few of the walk highlights, in no particular order.

• Waving to fishermen just off shore and asking them the same question they get over and over: Catching anything?

• Walking past the one home that has an automatic robotic lawnmower tracing its way back and forth across the yard in a never-ending loop and observing how much their yard resembles the putting green at a country club that would never admit me.

• Walking to the large garden at the end of the road to see if the folks who tend to it have left any more jalapenos packing apocalypse-level heat in the “feel free” basket.

• My kids being surprised by the motion-detector-activated sprinklers that our neighbor setup to keep deer out of his garden.

• Seeing the massive flock of geese walking fearlessly across lawns of empty homes.

• Looking out for new home lots for sale and then looking them up on my phone to see how much people will pay for real estate on any given day.

• Spotting the one guy on the road that has a fancy sports car and seems to drive well over the posted 25 mph signs (my mom has claimed she is going to carry a sign of her own that says “25 MPH” on her daily walks to wave when she sees him).

• Checking in on new home construction progress and commenting critically on each builder’s choices.

• Spotting the small herd of deer that thrive on our little peninsula despite the fancy sports car that drives fast.

• Getting a wave from every person who drives past.

• Meeting anyone who has a dog.

• The mail lady pulling over to tell us she has one of our packages at the post office before giving our kids candy and dog treats.

Thanks for taking this walk with me. Hopefully, it wasn’t too long for you.
