Happy June! This issue feels especially meaningful to me, and I’m so excited to share it with you.
There are some partnerships that begin as business and quietly grow into something much deeper. That’s been the case with Jacque and Nelson Bassett, who have been advertising partners with us since late 2022. I still can’t believe we’re approaching four years together.
Over that time, what they’ve built through JUELERYE | ARTISAN GALLERY & GIFTS has become so much more than a business presence in our magazine. It’s become a reflection of generosity, creativity, and heart for this community. Their work is beautiful, intentional, and always paired with a commitment to giving back in meaningful ways.
Jacque was also the one who first introduced me to The Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. I remember that conversation so clearly, and I had no idea at the time how deeply it would impact my life. Today, I’m honored to serve on their board and to witness the powerful, compassionate work they do every day for children and families who need it most.

our summer home, I’ve dreamed of creating spaces that feel calmer, more intentional, and less cluttered by the busyness of life and work. The moment Krystal said, “clean counters, clear mind,” I knew she was my girl. Not only am I excited to share Bee Organized with our community, but I’m also thrilled that she and her team are helping me finally tackle a project I’ve wanted to do for years.

And finally, on page 58, my heart is full as you’ll read a beautiful Father’s Day story written by my “baby girl” about her dad. Happy Father’s Day, Teej. We love you.
Father’s Day always makes me reflect on just how blessed I’ve been when it comes to the men in my life. My dad, “Papaw,” now in Heaven, and my stepdad, “Pop Pop,” have both been incredible examples of what a father and grandfather should be. Their love, steadiness, humor, generosity, and presence helped shape not only my life, but the lives of our children as well. What a gift it has been to love and learn from two amazing role models.
As I reflect on this issue, I keep coming back to one thought: I knew this magazine would connect me to people, but I never imagined how deeply those connections would become woven into my life. I feel incredibly grateful for the stories, the partners, the friendships, and the community that continues to grow with every issue.

When Sandy and Scott Plemmons founded Hoptown Brewing Co. in Mooresville, it was always their personal goal to find creative ways to give back.
“We knew we wanted Hoptown to not only be a place for people to gather and build community, but a place where we are an active example of what it means to truly be a part of that community, as well,” Sandy shares. “Our tagline is ‘[Be]er A Good Neighbor’ and we believe this wholeheartedly. It’s critical that we all look out for one another.”
In that very generous spirit, they created their popular blonde ale, appropriately named, Sip it Forward®. The popular craft beer has happily become the catalyst for their incredible Sip it Forward® initiative which has supported 20 local nonprofits and two Red Cross locations following Hurricane Helene, all since the brewing company opened in 2021. That’s a grand total of more than $100,000 donated.
“For this program to work, we wanted this special beer to be as easy to drink as possible. Nothing crazy or narrow in the ‘tasting profile’ that only a certain kind of beer drinker would like,” explains Sandy. “We then gave it a great price – right in line with our other craft beers –and made it both enjoyable and refreshing.”
Hoptown takes $1.00 from each pint of the blonde ale sold in the taproom and gives the buyer a special wooden token. Customers then select one of the four annual charities (nonprofits) on the brewery’s Sip it Forward® wall to choose where they want their dollar to go.
“We designed it so we don’t just ‘say’ we are donating $1.00 per pint, but we give the consumer a very tangible choice of where they want their money to go!” Sandy adds.
For new Hoptown customers who aren’t familiar with Sip it Forward® – simply asking the bar staff to recommend the lightest beer available will steer them in the right direction. Sandy says she’s yet to meet a customer who wasn’t tickled to be part of something bigger!
One of the amazing local nonprofits to benefit from the unique campaign this year is Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center in Statesville. A fully accredited 501(c)(3) organization that supports the investigation, prosecution, therapy and follow-up of reported child sexual abuse and assault cases in Iredell and Alexander counties – donations support the many efforts that take place daily at Dove House’s safe, welcoming childfriendly facility.
“True community partners don’t just serve their customers – they serve their neighbors,” shares Executive Director of Dove House Beth McKeithan. “We are deeply grateful for this local brewery, whose annual fundraising efforts continue to strengthen our organization and so many others. Their generosity proves that when local businesses give back, the entire community rises. We love Hoptown and are so grateful for all they do!”
At the end of the year, total amounts will be donated to the selected charities. Of course, you can donate even more by adding extra tokens to your bar tab at any time! Nonprofit applications, found online at hoptownbrewing.com, are accepted October 1st through December 31st each year. Four nonprofits are chosen and notified in January, announced to the public midFebruary, with the campaign year beginning on March 21st – the anniversary of Hoptown Brewing Co.’s opening!
“It’s pretty amazing what a community is capable of – and what kind of impact can be made right here at home,” shares Sandy.

Founded by Jacqueline and Nelson Bassett, Juelerye | Artisan Gallery & Gifts has quietly become a destination for those drawn to artist-made work, meaningful gifts, and the experience of discovering something truly unique.
Located in historic downtown Mooresville, the gallery is filled with extraordinary works from artisans across North America, each selected for both the beauty of the work and the story behind it.
While Juelerye has continued to evolve in downtown Mooresville, the story began more than ten years ago in Cornelius as a small multimerchant space. Over time, Jacqueline and Nelson refined their vision and gradually evolved the concept into the deeply personal gallery experience Juelerye is known for today.
Their professional backgrounds also quietly shape the way they approach the business. Jacqueline has spent much of her career in sales leadership and is also a certified business and life coach, while Nelson brings experience in data analysis and operations. Together, they balance creativity
with strategy, intuition with structure, and vision with thoughtful execution.
“In many ways, Juelerye reflects how Jacqueline and Nelson move through life together,” Jacqueline shares. “I’m the gas, and he’s the brakes. I tend to see what can be, always dreaming, imagining, and pushing forward. Nelson brings a steady, grounded perspective. He asks the right questions and makes sure what we build is thoughtful and lasting.”
Within that balance, the two have created a gallery that is entering its fifth year in business this month and continues to resonate deeply with visitors from across the region and beyond.

“This is the foundation that shapes how we choose the artists we represent, how we create experiences in the gallery, and how we make decisions each day,” she explains. “There’s a rhythm to it, balancing vision with steadiness and creativity with care, that draws people in. I believe our clients feel that.”

Even the name reflects that philosophy. Juelerye is derived from Old French, meaning precious ornaments. Yet the gallery offers something beyond beautiful objects. It offers connection, discovery, and conversation.
“Everything in the gallery is artist-made, and we spend a great deal of time sharing the stories behind each piece, so a purchase feels personal and connected,” Jacqueline says. “Even just a few specific artist details or moments from their lives can completely change the way someone experiences a piece.”
Many of the works represented at Juelerye become part of someone’s story, celebrating a milestone, honoring a relationship, remembering a loved one, or simply bringing beauty into everyday life. It’s a responsibility Jacqueline and Nelson carry with great care and intention.
One of the comments Jacqueline and Nelson hear most often from visitors is simply, “We’re so glad you’re here.” To them, it reflects the relationships and sense of welcome they’ve hoped to create through Juelerye.
“Several of our customers from out of state make a point to visit whenever they are in the area, which has been both humbling and exciting,” Jacqueline shares. “We recently sent a commissioned piece of art to a client in Texas, and we’ve shipped jewelry and gifts across the country and internationally. One of our regular customers even takes pieces with her when she travels abroad to give as gifts, which has always felt especially meaningful to us.”
Among Jacqueline’s favorites in the gallery are Houston Llew Spiritiles, enamel on copper artworks known for capturing life’s milestones, friendships, travels, and celebrations through meaningful words and imagery. The collection is especially beloved for the emotional connection it creates between the giver and recipient.
Community involvement also remains an important part of the Juelerye story. Through local art events, client relationships, and support of organizations such as Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center, Jacqueline and Nelson continue to find ways to give back. Most recently, they helped raise more than $42,000 in support of Dove House and its mission.
Beneath the gallery’s welcoming atmosphere is also a deeply personal sense of purpose.
Jacqueline and Nelson continue to honor the memory of Jacqueline’s son, Ryan, who passed away in 2016. Ryan, who was diagnosed with the genetic syndrome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, was known for sharing joy freely and believing that anything was possible. His spirit continues to inspire Ryan’s Place, a loving community in Mint Hill dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities through respect, integrity, and empowerment.
That spirit has also inspired meaningful collaborations within the gallery, including a special “Cup of Wonderful” created by one of
Jacqueline’s artists, with proceeds supporting 22q-related causes and awareness.
More than anything, Juelerye is about connection. It’s about discovering pieces that carry meaning, stories that stay with you, and experiences that remind us beauty still matters in everyday life.
Jacqueline and Nelson hope visitors leave with more than something beautiful to take home. They hope they leave with a story worth carrying with them.

For younger kids, use picture labels on bins for sunscreen, goggles and pool toys, with everything at their height. For older kids, assign simple expectations like resetting the “drop zone” each evening or managing their own laundry basket.
5. Keep Systems Simple and Sustainable: Find easy-to-maintain solutions that fit your family’s real-life routines – bins without complicated lids, hooks instead of hangers and clearly labeled baskets.
“Above all, give yourself grace,” shares Krystal. “Organization should support your life, not add stress. To help routines stick, keep them simple and fun. Consider turning a quick daily “reset” into a five-minute game before dinner or bedtime. When systems are simple, kids are far more likely to stay consistent.”
Year round, Krystal says cabinets, pantries and garages are consistently at the top of most families’ to-do lists. For many homeowners, the ultimate goal is actually parking cars in their garage!
“It’s one of the most impactful changes we see, going from garages packed wall-to-wall with boxes to newly functional spaces where clients can finally park their cars again,” she adds. “Beyond the physical results, there’s a powerful emotional shift. Given the chance, how many of us would take a do-over—not an adjustment but a complete reset, a chance to shed the past and its labels, a life entirely new? (Be honest! Most of us wouldn’t hesitate!)
I didn’t realize it then, but growing up, I got a small taste of remaking myself.
At home…in church…people knew my story. They watched my family unravel. My father left. My mama started carrying the weight of raising four children with limited resources. That reality shaped how people saw me.
In school, though, most people didn’t know my story. I wasn’t “the girl from the broken home”; I was simply…me. I could participate, achieve, and belong, out from under the shadow of what I had walked through.
In hindsight, what felt like opportunity was also an escape. I wasn’t just staying busy. I was searching for a version of myself untouched by pain and shame.
Many of us know that longing. The desire to move forward is real. But the past has a way of lingering, doesn’t it, warping our thoughts while influencing our decisions and direction
too? It tries to own who we are because of who we used to be.
We want a new chapter but keep running into old narratives. (Can I get an AMEN?!)
What I didn’t realize then but know in high definition now…real transformation doesn’t come from erasing the past. It comes from being reshaped right here in the present.
God speaks to us as powerfully as He spoke in ancient times. He urges us with these words: “Rise to your feet!” He seeks to do a purifying work in us in THIS season! As we allow Him to have His way, God promises… “I am remaking you… into a people invincible.” (Micah 4:13)
We can feel so overlooked and worn down that “invisible” seems more fitting than “invincible.” I hear you!
Study God’s process described in Micah. Remaking occurs through refinement, through pressure and stretching, in seasons that feel uncomfortable, even unwanted. In such seasons, NONE of what you’re facing is punishment. It’s preparation!
The language of threshing and refining feels unfamiliar to our technological age, but I promise, it speaks to where we are. Anything that cannot sustain what lies ahead must be removed. Not everything we carry is meant to continue with us. (Read that again! WHEW!)
Stop saying, “Why is this happening to me?” Start asking, “God, what are you building in me for my next chapter?” He’s not doing something to you; He’s doing something worthwhile in you!
If you give Him free reign to do the work, your internal growth will steel your capacity to stay steady through hard things. God is not building in you a life free from challenge. He’s developing a depth in you that no longer shakes at what used to break you! You’ll gain strength not determined by circumstances. You’ll carry confidence not rooted in what others think. You’ll possess endurance that weathers life’s storms with courage.
Y’all! THIS is what it means to be REMADE by God Himself.
You’re not stuck, and you’re surely not what you once were. As you are refined and remade by God, you become someone stronger than you’ve ever been!
Will you allow God to remake you? He offers a far better “do-over” than you’ve ever imagined! I’m living proof!

Fear, insecurity, approvalcraving…they shape our lives and limit our capacity to grow into all God dreams for us. Refinement burns away those things that can’t go where He’s taking us. This separation doesn’t diminish us! It strengthens us!
Friend, we must reframe how we process difficult seasons. What feels like loss may actually be freedom. What feels like pressure may be development. What feels like delay could be intentional preparation. With God’s help, we become more stable, more grounded, and more capable of carrying what comes next.
The moment I read this piece from Dr. Debbie Lanier, I literally stopped in my tracks. It met me exactly where I was that morning, exhausted, emotional and needing the reminder that God is still in the business of remaking lives. I immediately knew these words were meant to be shared.
I have a feeling many of you may need this message, too. Because the truth is — every single one of us longs for grace, growth, healing and yes… sometimes even a do-over.

If you’ve never spent a June weekend in the mountains of western North Carolina, here’s the short version: the air is cool, the rhododendrons are still burning pink along the ridges, and somewhere nearby, someone is almost certainly playing a banjo or guitar. This region has always had music running through it like a creek that’s constant, natural, and completely unself-conscious. This June, that’s truer than ever. And with Father’s Day falling on June 21st, the mountains are practically giftwrapping themselves.
BOONERANG MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL, BOONE, June 19–21
Let’s start with the one that doubles as the ultimate Father’s Day weekend itinerary. Boonerang is a free, multi-day street festival that takes over downtown Boone every third weekend of June, and this year’s fourth annual edition is shaping up to be the best yet. The whole premise is a homecoming as artists with genuine ties to the High Country return to play for the town that shaped them, and the crowds that come to see them feel less like a festival audience and more like one enormous reunion.
The 2026 lineup is genuinely eclectic. Friday night, which happens to be Juneteenth, is headlined by Kaleta and Super Yamba Band, an Afropop act that promises to be a revelation on a mountain street stage. The Revelers, a Cajun outfit from Louisiana, are also on the bill, and getting Cajun music onto the streets of Boone has been a longstanding goal for the organizers. Beyond those two, expect Toubab Krewe a world music collective blending rock, African sounds, and jam, celebrating their 20th anniversary, Fireside Collective, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road, the Whitetop Mountain Band, the Junaluska Gospel Choir, and plenty more across multiple stages.
Saturday is the big all-day street festival. Sunday, Father’s Day, wraps things up with the International Day: a parade of nations, global food, live world music, and yes, a piñata. It’s the kind of afternoon that makes dads feel genuinely celebrated rather than just handed a card. Beer gardens are stocked by Booneshine Brewing Co., Lost Province Brewing Co., and Appalachian Mountain Brewery. Did we mention it’s all free?
HIGH COUNTRY JAZZ FESTIVAL, BOONE, June 10–14
The High Country Jazz Festival, now in its fifth annual run, kicks off June 10 and brings a polished, sophisticated vibe to the mountains. The anchor performances feature Grammywinning alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón performing with pianist Luis Perdomo, along with jazz legends Spyro Gyra, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and the Emmet Cohen Trio. Main headline shows are held at the Appalachian Theatre in downtown Boone, with ancillary events with lectures, exhibitions, and late-night jams, spreading into Blowing Rock venues, making for a lovely excuse to bounce between two of the High Country’s most charming towns.
If Dad leans more Miles Davis than mountain dulcimer, the jazz festival’s opening weekend is his moment. A pre-concert wine and cheese reception before the Miguel Zenón show on June 10 is the kind of elegant evening that says “we planned this for you” not “we grabbed a gift card at the last minute.”
If you find yourself closer to Asheville, the North Carolina Arboretum hosts its Music in the Mountains performances as part of its Spring Into the Arb series running through June. Local musicians perform surrounded by botanical gardens and mountain views, a gentler, more pastoral kind of live music afternoon, and one of the most underrated settings in the region.
Father’s Day angle: For the dad who appreciates a slow morning, a garden walk, and music that doesn’t require earplugs, this is your move.
What makes June in the NC mountains so special for live music, and for Father’s Day, isn’t just the quantity of events. It’s the feeling on the ground. You’re not fighting heat or humidity. The elevation keeps everything pleasant, and there’s a looseness to mountain crowds that big-city festival audiences rarely manage. People stay for the whole set. They talk to the musicians afterward. The guy next to you at the beer garden might turn out to be the one who played fiddle an hour ago.
Whether you make it to the packed streets of Boonerang on Father’s Day Sunday, a jazz set at the Appalachian Theatre, or strolling the NC Arboretum listening to music, June in these mountains delivers something increasingly hard to find: live music that still feels like it belongs to the place where it’s being played, and a Father’s Day worth remembering.

Summer around Lake Norman is one of the best times to slow down and enjoy time together. With longer days, warm evenings, and so many local spots to explore, date nights don’t have to be complicated or expensive to feel special.
Whether it’s a Friday night out, a slow Saturday morning, or a casual evening by the water, there are so many local ways to make the most of the season.
Birkdale Village is a perfect spot for a Friday night date. Start with dinner at places like North Italia or eeZ Fusion & Sushi, then take your time walking around and stopping into a few shops. After dinner, grab dessert from Kilwins or Morelia Gourmet Paletas before heading toward the plaza.
For a more relaxed end to the night, stop by Suffolk Punch Brewing and enjoy a drink on the outdoor patio near the plaza while listening to the live music performances on Friday nights. It’s an easy way to turn dinner into a full night out without overplanning.
MORNING IN DOWNTOWN
A morning in Downtown Davidson and a simple, walkable date. Start with breakfast at Famous Toastery

After eating, take advantage of the 1.5-mile paved walking loop around the lake, which passes through shaded green space. The trail makes it easy to walk, talk, and take your time enjoying the view. Make sure to stay until sunset, as Jetton Park is one of the prettiest places in the area to watch the sun set over the lake, making it the perfect end to a date night.

As summer approaches Lake Norman, a new name is championing conversation. One that re-defines being called a “Hippo” as someone who is competitive, community-focused, and a supporter of familyfriendly fun. The Lake Norman HarborHippos are quickly becoming a key point in everyone’s Summer season plans, and for good reason, they offer something meaningful for everyone.
At its introduction, the HarborHippos are a summer collegiate baseball team with a mission to support the development of young college athletes. The team provides players the ability to further hone their skills and gain valuable experience beyond the individual’s college campus. For many of these athletes, summer ball is an important step in their baseball journey, and Lake Norman is giving them a place to play.
But at its heart, the HarborHippos are more than just baseball. A strong commitment to community is woven into everything they do. Throughout the year, the organization actively supports local nonprofits such as Cool Kids Clubhouse, Bags of Hope, and the Lake Norman Humane Society to raise awareness, build connections, and support each organization’s honorable cause. The team partners with the non-profits groups for established service days attended by the players and staff alike, and host theme nights with proceeds going to these specific causes, like the All Star game on June 27 with a softball game to support Cool Kids Clubhouse. The HarborHippos are dedicated to making a positive impact far beyond the outfield.

As we head into June, you may have already planted beautiful container gardens—or perhaps you’ve been inspired by the gorgeous selections at RidgeCrest Garden Center—and now you’re wondering how to keep them looking their best all season long. Let’s face it, we all want that yard that turns heads!
Watering is the easiest—and sometimes hardest—thing to master. Always water in the early morning and aim for the base (roots) of the plants. Overhead watering can cause sun scald on leaves. Be sure your containers drain properly, as too much water can lead to root rot. Water consistently and thoroughly. The soil should feel cool and slightly damp to the touch, and when you insert your finger into the soil, a bit of dirt should stick when you pull it out.
Your plants are like new babies—they need to eat! The soil you planted them in only provides nutrients for a limited time. We recommend feeding heavy-feeding annuals at least once a week, while many perennials only need fertilizing once per season.
TIP THREE: DEADHEAD FOR CONTINUOUS BLOOMS
Deadheading spent blooms is key to keeping annuals looking gorgeous all season long.
When a bloom fades, the plant naturally begins producing seeds, signaling that its job is done. By removing those spent blooms, you encourage the plant to keep producing flowers instead of seeds. For plants like geraniums, follow the stem down to the next stalk and snap it off where they meet.
While we love our plants, insects do too. Treat your plants with an appropriate insecticide— organic or synthetic, depending on your preference. A systemic treatment absorbed through the roots can be especially effective in keeping pests away long-term.
You’ve invested time and effort into your planters—don’t forget to enjoy them! Take a moment to sit outside, walk around your home, snap a few photos, and truly appreciate your hard work.

A balanced, nutrient-dense bowl with fiber-rich quinoa and chickpeas, fresh vegetables, and feta, topped with healthy fats from olive oil and avocado for a satisfying, well-rounded meal.
Servings: 6
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
• 2 cups uncooked quinoa
• 1 can chickpeas, drained, rinsed
• 2 bell peppers, chopped
• 1 cucumber, chopped
• 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
• 1 red onion, diced
• 1 cup feta, crumbled
• Avocado to top
• Hummus to top
• Olive oil to drizzle on top
Instructions:
1. Cook quinoa according to package instructions.
2. While quinoa is cooking, chop the 2 bell peppers, 1 cucumber, 1 pint cherry tomatoes, and 1 red onion.
3. Drain and rinse chickpeas.
4. Once quinoa is cooked, pour into a large bowl and add the chopped veggies, chickpeas, and 1 cup feta.
5. Dish into single serving bowls and top with hummus and/or avocado, and drizzle olive oil on top. Enjoy!

Last month, I wrote an article titled “You’re Just Like Your Mom!” and this month, in honor of Father’s Day, it only felt right to write one for my dad. Similar to my mom, in some ways I’m just like him… and in others, we couldn’t be more opposite.
I’ve got his blue eyes and long legs— appearance-wise, it’s pretty obvious we’re related. I can be soft-spoken like him, and I definitely get my more introverted qualities from him too. But beyond the physical traits and personality similarities, there are so many deeper things I’ve learned from watching him my whole life.
One of the biggest lessons? The value of hard work.
That man works HARD. He owned a body shop for my entire childhood, and long days, weekends, and even holidays were just part of life. Looking back now, I realize how much sacrifice came with being a business owner, but as a kid, it was simply what he did. He showed up every single day.
The one exception each year was our Fourth of July vacation. He’d close down the shop for the week, and we’d all pack up and head to Lake Norman. To this day, some of my favorite childhood memories are from those lake weeks—tanning on the pontoon boat, being out on the water, and seeing my dad fully relaxed and happy. That man LOVES the lake. And it makes me so happy that the place he looked forward to escaping to once a year eventually became the place he got to retire and live fulltime. My parents have lived there for almost 10 years now, and it’s hard to get him to leave. As a fellow homebody, I get it.
I also vividly remember him always washing the dishes after dinner. At the time, I thought it was just part of his routine, but really, I

think it was his way of trying to get his hands clean after a day at the body shop. When you work with your hands like that, they carry the evidence of it. His hands were always rough and stained in a way that instantly told you: this is a hard-working man.
Another thing my dad taught me was the value of exercise.
For as long as I can remember, he rode his bike around town for an hour every single day around lunchtime. If you lived in Clemmons, you probably saw him biking at some point. It wasn’t negotiable, it was just part of his routine. Looking back now, I’m sure it gave him a mental break from work, but I also know taking care of his health mattered a lot to him. Especially during a time when people weren’t constantly talking about wellness and exercise the way they do now, I think that level of consistency is really admirable.
And speaking of health… my dad has always been extremely particular about what he eats. He loves a sweet treat just like I do, but overall he’s very disciplined with his diet. He doesn’t eat pork or red meat (despite my occasional attempts to convince him moderation is okay), and he’s always open to learning more about health. If I suggest he needs more protein or should start drinking electrolytes during the summer, he’s immediately on board.
He also taught me the importance of taking care of your things.
Some of our biggest arguments when I was younger were about me not keeping my car clean. My dad has always been meticulous about maintaining everything he owns. He’s basically the definition of the ideal homeowner, car owner, boat owner—you name it. While that trait maybe rubbed off a little more on my brother than me, I still like to think I’m pretty
good at taking care of my car and home… and that is 100% because of him. (Sorry, Mom) I sure do love that man.
Growing up with two entrepreneur parents and a dad who was so far from the stereotypical golfing, office-job dad gave me such a unique childhood experience…one I’m incredibly grateful for. Instead of taking me to soccer games, he took me riding dirt bikes. Instead of teaching me through long lectures, he taught me through his daily actions—the consistency, the hard work, and the quiet way he showed up every day.
He’s truly the best there is, and I’m so grateful he’s my dad.
This month’s column from Brooke Culler is especially personal. The dad she’s writing about is my husband, and reading her words reminded me just how much of the quiet strength behind our family — and behind our magazines — comes from him. While many of our readers know Brooke as the owner/ publisher of our Winston-Salem magazines and editor of LKN Magazine, they may not realize how much support her dad has given all of us through the years. We recently attended the District 26 conference in Columbia, South Carolina. District 26 is part of the national America’s Boating Club organization. While we were there, we had the opportunity to see a B-25 bomber. It was recovered from Lake Greenwood, SC on August 5, 1983.
The South Carolina Historic Aviation Foundation (SCHAF) was founded in 2011 for the purpose of preserving “this State’s valuable contribution to aviation- from its very beginnings”. Their landmark project is the restoration of a B-25C that was recovered after it crashed into Lake Greenwood, SC on D-Day, June 6, 1944, during a World War II training flight. It spent nearly 40 years underwater. The B-25C Mitchell bomber is a rare model and the only known airplane left in the state that was a part of the Columbia Army Air Base fleet. Their hanger is a museum open to the public for visits every second Saturday of the month from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Dave Moxley retired and started working on the restoration project in 2012. He made a presentation that evening at the club house and it was very interesting. There were about 10,000 B-25s made. Most in Kansas City and the rest in California. She was designed for both low-level and high-level bombing and strafing. Strafing means shooting at the ground such as buildings, troops and aircraft. Most of the B-25s were used primarily in the Pacific theatre along with all theatres in WWII. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle bombed Japan flying off an aircraft carrier on April 18, 1942, to show the Japanese that their outer islands were not safe.
There were many different nose configurations they could put on the aircraft, a 75 mm cannon, 50 mm and 30 mm machine guns and so on, depending on the assignment. They could carry a bomb load up to about 3000 lbs. This was a fighting machine.
Dave Moxley said that the restoration project was to bring the B-25 back to its original condition, but it would not fly. Too expensive. We went into the bomb bay, and it looked brand new. He pointed out that the partial bomb bay doors were built from scratch. The flanged holes in the doors are for both strength and reducing weight. A special metal cutting die was used to cut the holes and form the flanges. It looked original, but it was not.

Dear Dr. Keith,
I am a 70-year-old man who lost my wife to a heart attack a few years ago. This isn’t a “woe is me” story. I was happily married to her for more than 25 years, and together, we raised a wonderful daughter who recently got married. This was my second marriage. I was happily married for 15 wonderful years before my first wife succumbed to her battle with cancer. Together, we raised two amazing sons. I’ve been blessed in my life to experience the joy of a loving and supportive marriage, not only once but twice. However, with both marriages, I’ve endured the pain and grief of loss.
I’m fortunate to have children who live nearby and want me to be an integral part of their lives. They’re all married and have given me a couple of grandchildren. I cherish my time with them, and they’re incredibly welcoming. However, I sometimes feel like I’m intruding on their family time. I don’t want them to feel obligated to take care of me. I’m generally in good health, financially stable and active. I play golf and work out regularly. I’m in decent shape, especially for my age, and I’ve recently started playing pickleball. Most of my friendships over the past few years have been with my wife’s friends and their spouses, as couples. I didn’t bond individually with the husbands and haven’t kept in touch with them. Most of my time was spent with her when she was alive, and I’m comfortable being alone. My kids are worried that I spend too much time alone and are always inviting me to dinner or on family outings. I believe they feel the need to take care of me, but I don’t want to be a burden to them.
Here’s my dilemma. I’ve had an incredible life and was lucky to share parts of it with two remarkable women. I’ve been blessed with children who love and care for me and prioritize my well being. However, I’ve endured the long and painful passing of my first wife and the sudden death of my second. While I’m doing well being alone, my children’s attempts to fill my time aren’t enough. I’m feeling lonely. I enjoy having a partner and being married. Is it selfish of me to want to start dating at my age? I’ve been fortunate twice. Would I be tempting fate by potentially giving marriage another chance? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Henry,
You’ve been fortunate to have met and shared your life with two wonderful women and experience successful marriages with both. It’s a challenge for most of us to find one great love, let alone two, in a lifetime. Considering your age, I don’t think you’re too old to find love again. I’m not a fan of putting limits on things. Age limits and time limits hinder our ability to tap into what could potentially be possible. Are you tempting fate? Absolutely, you are. We all tempt fate whenever we take on new challenges because nothing in life is guaranteed. The question you need to ask yourself is, will you regret doing something or not doing it? It’s not the mistakes we make in life that are difficult to live with, but the regrets.
When seniors ask me if it’s too late for them to find love, I like to share the story of Paul and Audrey. Both of them were happily married and lost their spouses to illness later in life. Each had given up on finding love again. They were introduced while volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Paul was 87 and Audrey was 80 when they met. They started dating and got married quickly. They were married for seven years before Audrey passed away. Paul told me, “I don’t like comparing my marriages. They
were different, but both great. However, the last seven years were the best of my life.” So, it’s never too late to find love. It may be different, maybe even better.
I’ve never been a fan of living a life driven by fear. At a healthy 70, you have many good years ahead, and the choice of how to spend them is entirely yours. Whether you choose to be fearful or fearless is entirely up to you, but please don’t let loneliness dictate your path. Now would be an excellent time to discover something that brings meaning to your life. Consider taking a part-time job, exploring a new hobby or perhaps relocating to an active senior community. This move could provide you with the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with others during your twilight years. Avoid rushing into finding another wife. Instead, focus on cultivating friendships and relationships that are free from drama and bring you joy. Maybe love is in the cards, maybe not; you’ll know. These connections should enhance your life, not be a necessity. Prioritize developing a strong bond with yourself, so you never experience loneliness. Remember, you’re on the back nine of your life, and it’s entirely up to you whether or not you shoot a great round.

Jetton Park is one of the most popular spots around Lake Norman for a reason. The paths along the water, the open green space, and the shaded areas make it easy to spend time outside. Whether you are going for a stroll, meeting a friend, or just sitting by the lake, it’s one of those go-to spots that always feels relaxing. The lake views make it especially nice in the summer, and it is an easy way to enjoy the outdoors
explore. This park is an amazing option if you’re looking for a hike, bike ride, or just a change of scenery. The various trails make it easy to choose something that suits your pace, whether you want a quick walk or a more leisurely afternoon outside. It’s the perfect spot when you want to spend a little more time outdoors.
Ramsey Creek Park is another good spot to spend time by the water. The open space and lake views make it perfect for a relaxed outing. It’s also one of the best places to watch the sunset, which makes it a great way to end the day outside. Whether you stop by after work or spend a little longer there in the evening, it’s one of those simple places that always feels worth the visit.

The month of June tends to draw people out of the house for a myriad of reasons. The heat finally committing as summer begins, lends itself to the fact that the longest days of the year make it feel wasteful to stay indoors. Whatever the reason, the piedmont and coastal area of NC in June becomes a kind of outdoor living room, and the soundtrack is excellent.
Father’s Day lands right in the thick of it every year, the third Sunday of June, and whether by design or happy accident, the state’s music calendar tends to fill the surrounding weeks with exactly the kind of events that make for a good outing with someone you want to spend time with. Not the curated, ticketed, big-production kind of outing, though those exist too, but the kind where you spread a blanket on a lawn, crack open something cold, and let the music do what music does: make the afternoon feel longer than it is.
WENTWORTH, June 12–14
The Piedmont gets the month started right with one of its most distinctive events. The Charlie Poole Music Festival, held on the campus of Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, honors the legacy of Charlie Poole, a cotton mill worker from the community of Spray, NC (now Eden) who became a foundational figure in early American string band music. The man crafted his first banjo from a gourd. That’s the kind of origin story this festival is built around.
Across three days, the event presents stage shows alongside more than 20 musicians’ competitions, old-time fiddle, claw hammer banjo, bluegrass band, fingerstyle guitar, capped by the Grand Champion Banjo Award, a $1,000 winner-take-all prize for old-time, three-finger, Charlie Poole-style playing. Past lineups have included Americana heavyweights like Dom Flemons and John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Food
trucks, boondock camping, and impromptu jam sessions fill in the rest. It’s the kind of festival where the competitions on the second stage are just as worth watching as the headliners on the first. Roots music, taken seriously and played joyfully, the Piedmont at its best.
WILLOW OAK PARK BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL, ROXBORO, June 18–20
A few days later and about an hour east, Roxboro hosts the Willow Oak Park Bluegrass Festival, a family-style event co-presented by musician Lorraine Jordan and her band Carolina Road. The format here is generous: bands typically play two full sets per day, workshops run alongside the stage shows, and a jamming tent stays open for anyone who brought an instrument. The Lonesome River Band and Carson Peters and Iron Mountain anchor the Thursday lineup. Father’s Day falls squarely in the middle of this one, which makes it a natural gathering point, the kind of festival designed less for spectacle than for settling in.
CAPE FEAR BLUES FESTIVAL, WILMINGTON, June 12–14
Down on the coast, Wilmington delivers the Cape Fear Blues Festival, now in its 29th year. Put on by the Cape Fear Blues Society and hosted at The Rusty Nail Saloon, the festival mixes local, regional, and national acts in an intimate club setting alongside an outdoor beer tent and vendors’ market. Friday tickets run just $10; Sunday is free. Blues festivals have their own particular demographic energy, a crowd that skews toward people who have lived enough to appreciate songs about it. There’s an ease to these events, a lack of pretension, that makes them some of the most enjoyable live music experiences in the state.
For those willing to take a ferry, Ocracoke Island opens June’s music season with the Ocrafolk Festival with musicians, storytellers, artisans, and local food spread across Silver Lake Harbor in the heart of the village. It’s intimate, it’s idiosyncratic, and it requires a little effort to get to, which tends to selfselect for exactly the right crowd. June weekends on the Outer Banks don’t get much better than this.
The piedmont and coastal NC, June music calendar isn’t trying to compete with stadium tours or mega-festivals. It’s doing something quieter and more lasting by keeping traditions alive, giving communities a reason to gather, and offering anyone paying attention a month’s worth of reasons to get outside and listen. Father’s Day is just one more good excuse.

Ice cream lovers, rejoice — your favorite dessert may come with more perks than you think.
Sure, no one’s claiming a triple scoop waffle cone is the secret to eternal health, but enjoying ice cream in moderation can actually offer some surprising benefits for both your body and your mood. And honestly? Sometimes happiness counts, too.
First things first: ice cream is basically the unofficial mascot of joy. Think about it — birthdays, beach vacations, summer nights, breakups, celebrations, late-night cravings… ice cream somehow shows up for all of life’s biggest moments. There’s a reason for that. Eating foods we genuinely enjoy can trigger the release of dopamine, also known as the “feel-good” chemical in the brain. Translation? Ice cream literally has the power to brighten your day.
And let’s not ignore the nostalgia factor. One bite can instantly transport you back to childhood summers chasing the ice cream truck, sticky fingers after Little League games or family trips for a post-dinner cone. Few foods create memories quite like ice cream does.
Believe it or not, ice cream also contains nutrients your body can use. Since it’s made with dairy, many varieties provide calcium, which supports strong bones and teeth. It can also contain protein, vitamins and minerals like phosphorus and vitamin B12. Is it kale? No.
But does your mint chocolate chip deserve at least a little respect? Absolutely.
There’s also something to be said for the mental health benefits of treating yourself. We live in a world obsessed with “clean eating,” counting macros and labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” But having balance — and allowing yourself to enjoy dessert without guilt — can actually help create a healthier relationship with food overall.
Plus, ice cream is social.
Nobody says, “Want to go get a plate of steamed broccoli together?” But ice cream? Ice cream brings people together. Dates, family outings, girls’ nights, celebrations with coworkers — there’s something universally fun about gathering around a cone, cup or milkshake.
And let’s discuss the endless flavor possibilities. Whether you’re loyal to classic vanilla, adventurous with lavender honey, committed to cookies and cream or firmly convinced chocolate peanut butter should win awards, there’s truly a flavor for every personality. Ice cream is customizable happiness.
Another underrated benefit? It forces us to slow down. You can’t really rush an ice cream cone in July unless you enjoy wearing it. Eating ice cream encourages us to pause for a few
minutes, sit outside, enjoy the moment and savor something simple. In today’s nonstop world, that alone feels therapeutic.
Of course, moderation matters. Eating an entire gallon while watching reality TV at midnight every night probably isn’t what nutritionists would recommend. But a scoop here and there? That’s part of living.
At the end of the day, ice cream isn’t just dessert — it’s an experience. It’s comfort, celebration, nostalgia and joy all rolled into one delicious frozen treat.
