WHAT GENERATION ARE YOU?

What separates Baby Boomers from Generation X, and what are the special characteristics of Millennials? And hey there Gen Z and Alpha babies…welcome to the party! What is the cutoff for each generation, and what stage of life are the different generations in right now?

FIRST, LET’S LOOK AT A BREAKDOWN TO CLARIFY WHO’S WHO:

• GREATEST GENERATION: Born 1901-1924. There are very few still alive from this generation.

• SILENT GENERATION: Born 1925-1945. They are currently between 78 and 95 (23 million in the U.S)

• BABY BOOMERS: Born between 1946 and 1964. They are currently between 57-75 (71.6 million in the U.S.)

• GEN X: Born between 1965 and 1980 and currently between 41-56 (65.2 million in the U.S.)

• MILLENNIALS: Born between 1981 and 1996. They are currently between 25 and 40 (72.1 million in the U.S.)

• GEN Z: The newest generation, born between 1997 and 2012. They are currently between 9 and 24 (nearly 68 million in the U.S.)

• GEN A: Alpha generation starts with children born in 2012 and will continue at least through 2025, maybe later (approximately 48 million in the U.S.)

THE GREATEST GENERATION: Going back to the early part of the 1900’s, the Greatest generation are those born before 1928. This is the generation that fought and won World War II. Sadly, there are not many remaining from this group. This generation’s characteristics include personal responsibility, humility, work ethic, frugality, commitment, integrity, and self-sacrifice.

THE SILENT GENERATION: Next came the Silent generation which describes adults born from 1928 through 1945. These are children of the great depression and World War II, and their “Silent” label refers to their image as conformist and civic-minded. Time Magazine coined this term in a 1951 article describing the emerging generation of the time. Some characteristics of this generation would be traditional values, emphasis on values such as hard work, loyalty and thriftiness, financial prudence, respect, determination, and resilience.

THE BABY BOOMERS: The oldest members of the Baby Boom generation were part of the spike in fertility that began in 1946, right after the end of World War II. Its youngest members were born in 1964, shortly before a significant decline in fertility that occurred after the birth control pill first went on the market. The Boomers grew up in a time of prosperity and an absence of world wars. Some were the Flower Children; some took LSD and protested the war in Vietnam. Unlike their parents who grew up during the Great Depression, Boomers

became great consumers. They were the generation that experienced unparalleled national optimism and prosperity, The Cold War, fear of a nuclear attack from Russia, bomb shelters and hiding under a desk at school. They also were there for the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

GENERATION X: Generation X describes those born from 1965 through 1980. As children in the 1970s and 1980s, a time of shifting societal values, Gen Xers were sometimes called “latchkey kids” due to them returning as children to an empty home and needing to use their own key. Because of this, Gen X kids often had less supervision than other generations. This was a result of increasing divorce rates and increased participation of women in the workforce before there was widespread availability of childcare outside the home. As adolescents and young adults in the 1980s and 1990s, Xers were called the “MTV Generation” sometimes being characterized as slackers, cynical, and disillusioned. However, in their midlife during the early 21st century, research describes Gen Xers as active, happy, and achieving a work–life balance. This generation has also been credited as being entrepreneurial and productive in the workplace.

MILLENNIALS: This generation is largely made up of the children of the Baby Boom generation. Their name refers to the first generation to come of age in the new millennium. One belief about Millennials is that they were raised to think they could become anything they dreamed of and found out that wasn’t exactly the case when they began looking for a job. The Millennials grew up in a time when most homes had an internet connection and a computer. Millennials came of age in a working world that exhibited explosive growth in online companies such as Google, Facebook, SalesForce.com, LinkedIn, EBay, and so many others. They have been the beneficiaries of a revolution in the way we work, including widespread acceptance of flextime, working from home and freelancing.

GEN Z: Generation Z, born from 1995 to 2010 pretty much arrived with a tablet and a smartphone under their arms. Gen Z is the first social generation to have grown up with access to the Internet and portable digital technology from a very young age and have therefore been called “digital natives.” Gen Z grew up more supervised, more protected than prior generations. Generation Z tends to live more slowly than previous generations at the same age. Research shows that they have lower rates of teenage pregnancies; and though they do consume alcohol, they don’t do it as much and are more hesitant to try other drugs. They may have less “in person” and “face to face” contact with others due to more time connecting via smartphones, and they have less experience with teen jobs and earning money in high school. Generation Z teenagers are, however, more concerned than older generations with academic performance and job prospects.

As for the most recent generation, those born after 2010, they have been designated the ALPHA GENERATION. Who will they be? It won’t be long before we have a whole new set of defining characteristics to talk about and learn from.

LET’S BE REAL

We are not a “one size fits all” society.

We don’t all walk the same way, speak the same language, listen to the same music, have the same social circles, or have the same jobs.

We don’t dress the same, have the same strengths, read the same books, and we all are not inspired by the same people.

We also shouldn’t be doing the same workouts, eating the same foods, sleeping the same amount, drinking the same amounts of water, having the same opinions, spending the same amount of time at work or at play.

We are not a “one size fits all” community.

Every one of us is different. Each one of us on our own journey. Everyone with individual visions and goals.

So I often wonder, why is it when the newest “fad diet” or workout plan arises, it seems that the majority of us think we need to jump on the bandwagon ASAP?

“Did you hear, Stacey lost 15 pounds in 5 days on the water diet! I have to try it!”

I have clients and people in the community asking daily, “what diet do you think is the best?” “What workout program would help them lose the most weight?”

My answer. If what you are doing right now is working for you, continue. If not, ask for some help and shake things up. We all may have similar visions of a healthy lifestyle, but our goals/steps to get there look quite a bit different.

The ONE thing I will promise you is that when it comes to your health and overall well-being, diets are never the answer. ( ≥ Key in Keto, South Beach, Adkins, Low Carb Craze, juice cleanses, The Master Cleanse, you name it, etc.....)

What works for one, may work for another, but it may not. And that is ok. The more exciting news is that YOUR journey will shift and change, have highs and lows. What worked for you last year may still be working, or you may have hit a plateau. Time for a change. And that is ok too.

Here is the solution. ASK for help if you need it. The right professional with YOUR health at heart will guide you in the right direction for you.

Choose YOUR path. Choose what works for YOU . Choose something you can feel great about and commit to.

MY PATH HAS CHANGED MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS. BUT CURRENTLY, HERE IS WHAT I FIND WHEN IT COMES TO FITNESS AND NUTRITION, TO BE WORKING BEST FOR ME IN 2023!

• Spend at least 5-10 minutes (try for more) each day in prayer/ journal/reflections

• Daily workouts and walks during my workday to stay moving

• Surround myself with active people

• Attend hot yoga at least 1x per week

• Sauna at least 1x/week

• Drink at least 1/2 my body weight in water every single day

• Eat slowly and not after 7pm

• Never eat until I feel full. Always stop before that.

• Limit coffee to 2 cups per day (1 cup is mushroom coffee)

• Pay attention to macros and the way my body reacts to different amounts

• Move my body and hit 13,000 steps every single day

• Limit my wine intake. Drink better wine, less of it.

• Incorporate probiotics, ACV, vitamin D, fish oil daily

• Eat 90% - lots of veggies, lean protein, healthy fats

• Foam roll for AT LEAST 5 minutes daily

• Have a bedtime routine and get at least 7 hours of sleep per night

What does your path look like for the rest of this year? What areas might you need help with? Let me hear from you. Contact Lindsey at lindsey@LindseyFisherNC.com or connect with her on social media @LindseyFisherNC

FINDING PEACE & CONNECTION

First generation farmer, Devery Bellingham— owner of Aurora Flora in Mooresville—admits she hasn’t always had a green thumb. But after reading stories of cut flower farms around the country, and realizing there were literally endless varieties being grown, she knew she’d found a new passion.

“Things went from curiosity, to hobby, to obsession, and now a career!” says Devery. “I began my gardening journey in Texas, where my husband was going to school. We have only been in the Lake Norman area for two years, but now we are here to stay!”

As a busy mom, she also needed a creative outlet. So, she planted seeds!

Visit the farm in Mooresville (named for Devery’s daughter) to pick your own rainbow of pretty flowers, and you’ll immediately feel the warmth of Devery’s love for all things in bloom. The field is a quarter of an acre, there will be hundreds of blooms to choose from and navigating the space is easy.

“We are small and quaint, not a big, commercial, multi-generation farm,” she explains. “I grow all the seeds myself, plant them myself, and tend to the flowers myself. I like the variety we have on the farm, where people can actually create an arrangement with different textures and dimensions, rather than having one type of flower.”

You don’t need to bring a thing—except maybe a water bottle. Devery provides the container, the water, the flower clippers (to borrow—and only adults get to clip!), as well as instruction. She does remind visitors to wear sensible shoes! There are two container options: An individual cup that holds 20-25 stems for $20.00, or the “bulk” bucket which holds 60-75 stems for $60.00.

“Most everyone chooses the cup size, but occasionally people request a bulk bucket so they can DIY their flower arrangements for a bridal shower or baby shower, or if they want to make multiple arrangements for friends,” she adds.

Connecting with the community has been Devery’s favorite part of starting this new venture, along with nourishing her own soul.

“When I first started growing flowers, my favorite part was being able to give them to friends and neighbors, and I craved to reach more people. Flowers instantly brighten someone’s day. They can be considered an ‘extra’ for many, and I think that’s what makes them so effective in

boosting moods—they can be considered a nonnecessity, but are really so much more! To me, flowers mean dignity, and can be the beautiful ‘extra’ in your day!” adds Devery.

She loves hearing stories of who customers are buying flowers for, and finds joy in making bouquets for special occasions.

“The most common comment I get when people visit the farm is ‘thank you for creating something so beautiful,’ and ‘this is exactly what I needed.’ I feel honored to be able to give something like that to the community—a relaxing moment of peace, bonding, and fun.”

Many have fond memories of a particular flower from their grandmother’s garden, and Devery enjoys educating visitors on what local flowers are in season.

“While you can always find roses and lilies at a grocery store, locally grown flowers are completely dependent on climate and weather,” she explains. “The types of flowers available differ from week to week, sometimes month to month. Our blooming season is from May through October (until frost comes). We have sunflowers every week, so that’s a staple. No one leaves the U-Pick area without at least one or two sunflowers in their cup!”

Reservations are required for U-Pick, to ensure everyone has plenty of blooms to choose from— and you’ll love that it’s never too crowded. Once a ticket is purchased online, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Aurora Flora is typically open by appointment on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, but can vary due to weather and flower inventory. Stay tuned to their website— auroraflora.net—and social media @auroraflora.lkn—for weekly hours posted every Monday, and for any schedule updates. Email devery@auroraflora.net for more information and don’t forget to tag them with photos of your beautiful bouquets!

AURORA FLORA
“When someone gives flowers to me, it says, ‘I honor you. I see you. I’m thinking about you.’ I have loved being part of people’s special moments—watching mothers and daughters picking flowers together, and husbands and wives finding peace and connection in the flower field.”

The ultimate golf experience

...CLOSE TO HOME!

If you’re ready to tee off for a new adventure, Tempo Golf Club in Huntersville has arrived just in time!

Those who know owners Matt and Kristen Wilson well, can definitely feel the kindred connection between their new business and their vivacious personalities.

“Anyone who knows us will tell you we love activities!” says Kristen. “We are always planning, designing, or building something, and we want to create memorable experiences for our friends, family, and everyone we meet along the way!”

The two built Tempo Golf Club based on the love and spirit of golfing, inviting all levels of experience and abilities to join in the fun. They also found inspiration from daily life—mainly the many obstacles that can get in the way of spending time on the course! Both Matt and Kristen have marketing backgrounds, and share the ideal vision for what makes this concept work so well.

“There are often too many reasons making it difficult to get out there and play,” says Kristen. “While outdoor activities are certainly beneficial to the mind and body, it isn’t always practical. Limited time or availability, weather conditions, or hectic family schedules—there’s a list of reasons in the way!”

Matt and Kristen have lived in Huntersville for three years, after deciding in 2015 to try out a new city as their home.

“We landed in Charlotte. Later, we were blessed to become pregnant with our daughter, and decided the LKN area was the perfect place to start our family,” says Kristen. “Community, neighbors, and friends are really important to us. We feel grateful to have found a great community—The Greens at Birkdale Village—for our daughter to experience.”

Golf, it seems, has played an integral role in their relationship from the start—with Matt taking Kristen on golf dates as often as possible. And as the story goes, when Kristen was six days overdue with their daughter in February of 2021, she told Matt there was an open tee time at Birkdale, and she invited him to golf—while hitting every bump with the cart to “get things moving!”

“It was a cold, rainy day, but we were ready to meet our little one—Parker—who arrived soon after, safe and sound!”

Whether you are a scratch golfer trying to shave a stroke off your handicap, or someone who has never picked up a club, Tempo Golf Club has an activity just for you.

“We are one of the first, most accurate, and most fun golfing

TEMPO GOLF CLUB

experience in the greater Lake Norman and Charlotte area!” says Matt.

The simulators offer 500+ courses from around the world—including the beautiful course in Augusta, GA!—along with an array of fantasy courses and practice scenarios. Picture yourself with a few friends having a cold beverage right here, while visiting a beautiful course you might not otherwise get to experience—without ever leaving Huntersville.

The club offers four professional golf simulator bays and one augmented reality putting area. Golfers can receive real-time feedback with images, video playbacks, and data on each swing.

“The augmented reality putting green offers similar play environment and training, with ball path tracking, data to improve your short game, and other fun things like tic-tac-toe and PuttPong—we want to make sure golfers of all skill levels can enjoy their time here!” Matt adds.

Guests can book tee times in hourly increments, sign up for weekday business memberships, and request private events. The team is also planning to create regular leagues and monthly competitions, and partner with local instructors to make lessons available.

“We want to be positive, contributing members of the community,” says Kristen.“We hope that by creating an approachable, communityfocused business, we can bring the great game of golf to even more people.”

For these new business owners, community is everything! Their mission to make this popular, low-impact physical activity accessible and enjoyable for all is a win-win for golf enthusiasts living anywhere near the Lake Norman area!

Tempo Golf Club is located in Huntersville at 10410 Arahova Drive, Suite C. Visit their website tempogolfclub.com to schedule a tee time, and follow them on Instagram @tempo_golfclub for events, promotions, and updates. Email info@tempogolfclub.com, or call 704-274-5946 for more information. Hours are Monday through Thursday

“Sometimes getting out to play is tough, as golfers know all too well. Tempo Golf Club hopes to change that for youth, for ladies, for pros and bros, for everyone, and for you. The course is undefeated. You cannot win golf. You cannot score zero. But you should sure as hell try!”

THE DAYLIGHT ROOM:

AN ALL-NEW PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO IN CHARLOTTE

studio photos by CARRIE ALLEN, portrait by ARIEL PERRY PHOTOGRAPHY

Carrie Allen, a Charlotte-based photographer, has been capturing headshots and branding photos professionally for seven years. Her lifelong passion to meaningfully connect with people has paved the way for the growth—and the self-fulfillment—of her career thus far.

And while she’s been keeping busy with new and returning clients, she’s been working towards a new goal behind the scenes: opening a studio of her own. Her new studio—The Daylight Room—is the first of its kind in the Charlotte area.

“The new studio is a love letter to the greater Charlotte community—and especially the photography community,” shares Carrie. The Daylight Room opened for rentals starting in June, and Carrie says her primary goal for the studio is to anticipate the needs of clients and renters alike, so that any time spent in the studio—no matter what the project or occasion—can be focused on creating

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL FIND AT THE DAYLIGHT ROOM:

• The studio is a pristine all-white space, including white ceilings, white walls, and matte white epoxy floors.

• With 1288-square-feet of working space, it’s one big, beautiful room, brimming with possibility.

• The fully equipped space is optimized for both natural light and artificial lighting.

• All studio furniture and props are curated, minimalist, and modern.

• The location is safe, convenient, and easily accessible, plus there’s free on-site parking and the bonus of elevators for loading in and out.

• The Daylight Room will be community-focused, so activities will include photography events, workshops, and other exciting opportunities for local creatives and free-thinkers to meet together.

STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING WEALTH & ACHIEVING FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

The desire to achieve financial independence and establish lasting wealth is something that resonates with everyone. It may sometimes feel like an unattainable dream, but with the right strategies and mindset, considerable progress can be made towards your financial goals. Here, I will share practical and effective strategies we implement with our clients to help them build wealth and work towards their financial goals.

First, it is essential to set clear and specific financial goals. Whether it is saving for a down payment on a house, paying off debt, or retiring comfortably, having tangible targets keeps us focused and motivated on our wealth-building journey.

Creating a budget and sticking to it is the foundation of sound financial management. By tracking our income and expenses, prioritizing savings, and being purposeful with our spending, we can take control of our finances and allocate funds towards wealthbuilding activities.

The most crucial step is prioritizing saving and investing. Saving should be a non-negotiable habit, and a portion of our income should be allocated towards savings and investments on a regular basis. Automatic transfers to our investment accounts can help ensure consistent contributions.

It is important to minimize debt and manage credit effectively. High-interest debt can hinder our wealth-building efforts, so it is crucial to prioritize paying off debts, starting with those carrying the highest interest rates. Responsible credit management, such as paying bills on time and keeping low credit card balances, will save us on interest payments and maintain a healthy credit score.

Embracing the importance of lifelong learning and upskilling, we make a valuable investment in ourselves, empowering personal growth, and opening doors to new opportunities. By staying updated on industry trends, seeking professional development opportunities, and expanding our skill set, we open doors to better job opportunities, higher income potential, and increased financial stability.

Professional guidance from a financial advisor or wealth manager is also worth exploring. They can provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific financial situation, optimize your investment portfolio, navigate complex financial decisions, and develop a customized wealth-building strategy.

Building wealth and achieving financial independence requires discipline, smart decisionmaking, and a long-term perspective. Remember, building wealth is a journey, so let us stay committed, be patient, and take comfort in knowing that each step we take brings us closer to our financial aspirations.

BRIGHTER

WHERE SPARKLING FIRST IMPRESSIONS BEGIN!

WHEN BRIGHTER SMILES OF DAVIDSON DEBUTED LAST JANUARY, IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG FOR THE GOOD NEWS TO TRAVEL—AND THE SPARKLING REVIEWS TO START ROLLING IN!

“ Let’s be honest: A beautiful smile not only presents your equally beautiful soul and personality to the rest of the world, but that shining flash of confidence can also be life changing!

With a personal passion for helping other people see their best selves, and embracing her avid interest in beauty products and services, owner Jasmine Egoavil introduced Brighter Smiles of Davidson to the community at the start of 2023.

Currently the only mobile whitening company around the Charlotte area, the business is a welcome blessing for busy moms and businesswomen, who are already juggling daily appointments, with little space left for personal time. Jasmine offers the finest professional mobile services, and is poised to travel to a client’s home or office. But on the flip side, she’s a working mother also, and knows sometimes a getaway for your own pampering is necessary! She also offers local clients the chance to meet at her own home office if they need a change of scenery.

Tapping into her Business Management degree and real-life experience, Jasmine felt she could come up with a cost-effective approach to teeth whitening that also offers quality and easy accessibility. She is inspired daily—by her work, and by her clients’ enthusiasm. “I love seeing the immediate transformation my clients undergo when they see brighter teeth. They can’t stop smiling all the way to their car!”

“I achieved great results with Jasmine’s gentle whitening service, and the best part is there was very little discomfort and sensitivity—nothing compared to the pain I experienced with white strips in the past. I got the same result in a single session as I would have gotten with an entire box of strips. I have very sensitive teeth and this is a game changer for me! Can’t wait to go back, so glad I found her!”

July 2023 | 29

She finds immense joy in helping clients feel confident with their appearance—and seeing them proud to show off their smiles. No matter the setting they choose, Jasmine’s clients know the importance of finding someone they can trust and rely on to deliver the best results. She is known for being a perfectionist, and that’s a skill that translates well for her clients.

“I started Brighter Smiles of Davidson because our smiles are one of the first things we use to introduce ourselves to the rest of the world, in every situation,” Jasmine explains. “That smile should leave a lasting impression on those you meet every day! I’ve seen people reluctant to smile in social settings or in photos, and I’ve always felt that is such a shame.”

Jasmine is proud to say she has researched and found the most effective products to bring your teeth to their brightest shade possible—and can complete the process in a little over one hour. Her goal is a happy client who likes what they see in the

mirror, making them eager to schedule an appointment for their next touch-up!

“I use only high-quality products made in the United States, FDA approved, and safe for your teeth’s enamel,” she happily shares. “Sourcing the best and most effective treatments for clients is important to me, as well as always learning and keeping up with the newest industry techniques.” You can be assured that the products Jasmine uses are the latest and greatest!

Brighter Smiles of Davidson also offers group discounts for bridal parties and ladies’ nights out (gather your friends or co-workers!), and she partners with other local professionals to offer facials, spray tans, Botox, and permanent bracelets as add-ons to any party. You can also book a “couple’s whitening” appointment before your wedding day.

“My smile has never looked so good! Jasmine came to my house to set up, so l didn’t even have to step away from work too long. Convenience and results both get five stars, but Jasmine being so accommodating, knowledgeable, and fun gets eight stars!”

When she made the decision to relocate from Palm Beach, FL, to Davidson—with her two daughters—Jasmine envisioned a simpler, more authentic way of life, and all three jumped at the chance to truly enjoy North Carolina’s beautiful weather! She has enjoyed getting to know neighbors around the community, and adventuring around the Lake Norman area—all while building an amazing client base and sharing her skills with so many.

“The best feedback I’ve received from many of my clients is that I’ve made them feel comfortable with a process they were initially very uneasy about,” says Jasmine. “Many people I see have never had their teeth whitened, and they feared what would happen to their teeth—especially if they had a high level of sensitivity. I pride myself on taking time to explain all aspects of the process, what results they can realistically expect, and any aftercare instructions they need to follow.”

If you have questions about the whitening process, or you’re ready to book an appointment with Jasmine, visit linktr.ee/brightsmilesdavidson or brightersmilesdavidson.glossgenius.com. Remember to follow Brighter Smiles of Davidson on Instagram @brightsmiles_davidson, to stay up-to-date with any pop-up events throughout the summer!

BRIGHTER SMILES OF DAVIDSON
“Jasmine is great! She explained the process to me and made me feel comfortable. I have gotten my teeth whitened before and no one took the time to explain the process and make sure I was comfortable. She has a really cool tool to show your tooth shade before and after the process, and Jasmine really cares that you see results. She is very professional and sweet, and her room set-up is so nice! I will definitely be going back for maintenance.”

FIRE ROASTED SALSA & FLANK STEAK TACOS: A SIZZLING SUMMERTIME COMBO

If you’re a fan of bold flavors and a touch of heat, you’ve got to try this fire roasted salsa with some flank steak tacos. This recipe brings together the smoky goodness of fire-roasted vegetables with tender marinated flank steak, resulting in a mouthwatering taco experience. Whether you’re hosting a summer cookout or simply want to elevate your Taco Tuesday, these tacos are a must-try.

LET’S START WITH THE STAR OF THE SHOW.

The fire roasted salsa. Begin by grilling 10 halved Roma tomatoes, 4 tomatillos, half a white onion, 3-4 jalapeños, 2 habanero peppers (for those who enjoy some heat), 5 Serrano peppers, and either a cubanelle or poblano pepper. Grill them until they acquire a tantalizing char, typically around 10 minutes.

Once the vegetables are grilled, combine them in a blender with the juice of half a lime, a capful of apple cider vinegar (ACV), 1 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp cumin, salt and pepper (to taste). Add the peppers, either deseeded or with seeds for an extra kick, along with half a bunch of fresh cilantro. Blend the mixture for about 30-45 seconds or until you reach your desired consistency. The result is a robust and flavorful fire roasted salsa that will awaken your taste buds. You can store this salsa in the fridge for up to 5-6 days and will make a couple of mason jars worth of salsa.

NEXT UP IS THE FLANK STEAK MARINADE.

In a bag, combine the juice of half a lemon and half a lime, ½ cup chopped cilantro, ¹/³ cup soy sauce, 2 Tbsp minced garlic, ½ Tbsp chili powder, ½ Tbsp cumin, ½ Tbsp paprika, 1 Tbsp black pepper, 1 tsp dried oregano, and ¼ Cup olive oil. Place the flank steak in the bag and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This allows the flavors to infuse into the meat, tenderizing it and enhancing its taste. Flank steak is a great, cheap cut of beef that will feed 2 people for around $9-10. If you are feeding four or more you may want to get a couple of steaks.

After marinating the steak, it’s time to grill it to perfection. Place the flank steak over blazing hot coals on your grill (propane or pellet grills work fine too, just make sure it is HOT) and sear it for approximately 3 minutes per side. This will give the steak a beautiful crust while keeping the inside juicy and flavorful. Cook the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of around 135°F, allowing it to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

To assemble the tacos, start by slicing the flank steak against the grain. Begin with one cut down the middle, following the grain, and then proceed to cut smaller pieces against the grain. This technique ensures maximum tenderness and easier eating. Load up some charred flour tortillas with fresh guacamole, chopped white onion, the sliced flank steak, and generous spoonfuls of the fire roasted salsa. Finish it off with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for an extra burst of flavor.

These are guaranteed to impress your family and friends with their incredible flavors.

RAY SINGLETON’S Message of Life,

Born and raised in Charleston, SC, Ray graduated from Winthrop University, and later received his M.Ed in counseling from there as well. Loving the area, he decided to make Charlotte his home, and soon met his wife, Roslyn. If the names are familiar, a video of him serenading his beautiful wife before her second brain tumor surgery went viral in 2020, resulting in a heartwarming appearance for the two on the Ellen DeGeneres show in both 2020 and 2022. Roslyn had been first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2013, but had been clear for six years, until a second tumor emerged.

No stranger to live entertainment, Ray also appeared on America’s Got Talent in 2021 — again serenading his wife and her incredible strength through difficult times. He says his songs for her were initially intended simply to make her smile.

When Ray lost his lovely Roslyn in November of 2022, he vowed to continue her legacy by devoting his own life to spreading a message of positivity around the world. She still inspires him every day. “I feel her all around me! She’s everywhere,” he says. “Roz was my biggest supporter in anything I did. She would come to my shows, listen to me practice the same song all day every day, and tell me how good I sounded.”

His love for her keeps Ray inspired to continue singing, performing, and reaching out to others through the magic of music. “I feel connected to her when I’m singing. I believe she can still hear me singing to her, all the way up in heaven!”

Though he’s been singing his entire life, Ray says he’s a “newbie” in the public speaking arena, and is still discovering how he wants his speeches to flow. “I gained notoriety by singing, so I understand that’s a powerful tool when looking to bring out the emotions in an audience. I want people to really feel after they hear me speak or sing!” he explains.

Listen to his message, even briefly, and you’ll see Ray is a firm believer that ‘things don’t happen to you, they happen for you,’ and that positivity is a daily choice. (Some of us, he

points out, have to make that choice several times throughout the day!)

“I’ve found that I simply feel better when I choose optimism,” says Ray. “When I choose to see the silver lining in a situation, I can still find positivity because of my attitude of gratitude. I’m grateful for my life, my family, the time I got to spend with my beautiful wife before God took her back to heaven, and the wonderful experiences I’ve had so far in this short life. I feel more productive when I’m positive, and I feel like I attract more positivity by being positive!”

& Play’ because that’s what we do! And every single time, IT’S A PARTY! ”says Ray.

That’s what Roz would want.

As an entrepreneur, Ray also represents Helping Hand Funds Recovery, LLC, an asset recovery firm that he started a year ago. “We assist individuals and businesses in filing claims that are open with their county after the foreclosure of their property. I not only run this business, I teach others how they can get involved as well. He also plans to hold Master Classes on the topic in the future. (Visit www. helpinghandfunds.com)

His message may also remind us that yes, life is tough! It can be unfair, unfavorable, and unforgiving. “But positivity is a personal choice, and I choose it as often as I can!” he adds.

About his music: Ray and his core bandmates have been together since their college days. “We’ve played small open mic events on and around the campus, we’ve played music festivals in Rock Hill and Charlotte, and been regulars at countless pubs and bars around the city as ‘in-house’ entertainment.”

Their repertoire includes music videos, weddings, birthday parties, any type of gathering that needs awesome music! “Our name is ‘Pull Up

Often asked for his best life advice, Ray is all about honesty. “The facts are this: We are all going to die. What we do with that information now is what’s important! Are you more grateful for your family, your loved ones, your friends, and all the opportunities afforded you? Life is absolutely not promised! If you have the chance to wake up, you have the opportunity and responsibility to ENJOY every single second. Choose to live!”

LESSONS LEARNED

ABOUT TO CELEBRATE HER 95 TH BIRTHDAY ON JULY 17, VIVIAN CARSWELL BLACKMON LEARNED STRENGTH AND PERSEVERANCE AT AN EARLY AGE, GROWING UP IN A SMALL COMMUNITY KNOWN AS

“I grew up in a loving home with generous neighbors who raised a generation of strong, thankful people,” she reflects.

Vivian always shares she was born on a hot summer day during the Great Depression, when hardship was simply a way of life.

But Vivian’s family also learned from an added struggle: both of her parents, John Esper Carswell and Minnie Fowler Carswell, were severely handicapped. Her father was blind, and her mother endured crippling rheumatoid arthritis, preparing the way for many, many valuable lessons for their eight children— four boys and four girls. All adapted, with the older siblings often caring for the younger ones— in a time of no electricity and no indoor plumbing.

Despite their handicaps, Vivian’s parents were blessed with amazing strength, and the activities and farm work they accomplished together were incredible. What valuable inspiration for their large family, who learned the power of a positive attitude, and the gift of finding the beauty in simple, daily life.

“One luxury we did have was Saturday nights,” recalls Vivian. “We would have popcorn balls, peanut butter crackers, and occasionally Pepsi! We listened to the radio— the Grand Ole Opry— I liked country music before it was cool!”

A Lake Norman resident since 1973, Vivian’s daughter, Kay, tells us her mother enjoyed watching the lake “fill” as it was being constructed. Today, Vivian lives— and still paints and writes poetry— in the waterfront house at Lake Norman that she and her husband built. Her own bustling family— three childvren, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 10 great, great-grandchildren— grew up with the same life lessons Vivian has carried in her heart for over nine decades: Loving, learning, and always finding that inner strength when you need it most!

To give a hug

To make someone’s day worthwhile

It may be to bake, paint, or sew

To spread the gospel wherever you go Or to sing and make music, letting the spirit soar

Things I Like About the Lake

The wild geese break

The silence of the dawn

Wakes me up

With a great big yawn!

In time to see the sun come up

It looks like a giant buttercup

To hear the birds sing

From tree to tree

And what a beautiful melody

And butterflies with their wings spread wide Ziz-zazzing through the sky

To watch the fish

And the bugs they catch

The baby ducklings

So newly hatched

Flowers with their heads held high

Waiting for some bee to come by

To see the birds as they nest and mate

They sit on their nest and patiently wait

To hear the frogs to their mates call Nature at work, holds me in awe

Fireflies with their beaconing light

Looking for lovers in the night

What a wonderful world this would be If we could all live in the same harmony

RIDING WITH PASSION & INSPIRATION

If you’re a budding bike enthusiast or maybe a more seasoned cyclist, you’ll find plenty of camaraderie at Blood, Sweat, Gears Bicycle.

Owner Keith Isenberg started in the industry in 1996 while attending college in Pennsylvania, where he learned the finer points of bicycle service and repair. After graduation, Keith pursued a career in web development, but his passion for cycling kept circling back to inspire him. After seven years of training and learning the industry from companies such as Cannondale, Trek, Shimano and Rockshox, he opened Blood, Sweat, Gears in 2007. Even now, as a small business owner, Keith is an avid cyclist, racing his road, mountain, and cx bicycles—riding almost every day of the week!

“We are small, we live locally, and I think that sets us apart,” says Keith. “It’s normally only me and Cameron in the shop, so you get to see the same people when you come in!”

Cameron Moss, fellow mechanic and cyclist, began cycling in high school just for exercise, but after his first group ride, he was hooked! He worked as a bike mechanic for the U.S. National Whitewater Center in 2009, while attending UNC-C, and since graduating, has continued to pursue his own passion here at Blood, Sweat, Gears. He loves all cycling, including road, mountain bike, and cyclocross races.

However, the true guiding light behind Blood, Sweat, Gears has always been Keith’s mother, co-founder of the shop,

and also a cyclist—Robin Isenberg. Robin passed away August 9, 2015, after battling ovarian cancer for three-anda-half years. The annual Robin’s Ride for Hope honors her memory and her influence, while raising awareness for the most silent cancer of all.

“She is such an inspiration, and still very present in the shop,” says Keith. “She helped so many people in this community with her passion for cycling, and will be remembered fondly by those whose lives she touched.”

One of Keith’s own favorite memories is he and his mom often caring for Keith’s infant daughter there in the shop.

“We took turns playing with her, and most people don’t get that experience with their mothers—it’s one I treasure!”

This year’s edition of Robin’s Ride for Hope—partnering with the Town of Mt. Holly and Teal Butterfly, the non-profit supporting ovarian cancer awareness— will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023, beginning at the Mt. Holly Farmer’s Market, 226 S. Main Street, in Mt. Holly, NC. The race will include 20K, 50K and 100K routes with rest stops, with preregistration $25, and day-of registration, $30. Registration will open at 7:00 a.m. that morning, and the ride will start at 8:00 a.m.

A reflection of both Keith and his mom, Blood, Sweat, Gears has always pursued a commitment to quality, service, and level of products—seen in their impeccable selection of bicycles and

accessories. They stand firmly behind every sale, including these services with the purchase of any new bicycle:

• Lifetime adjustments, inspections, and safety checks ($50 value)

• Free basic tune-up after six months ($125 value)

• Free bicycle fitting (priceless!)

Blood, Sweat, Gears also offers repairs, bike fit, custom wheel building, and a kids’ trade-up program. Keith is also proud to be part of the first National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) team—for grades six and up—in Lincoln County. NICA is a non-profit that promotes high school mountain biking across the United States.

“We are currently a composite team, which means we have multiple local schools involved to form a single team,” explains Keith. “The end goal is making mountain biking popular enough among middle and high school kids, that every school has its own team.”

For all your cycling needs, and for the finest local service around, visit Blood, Sweat, Gears Bicycle at 108 Killian Farm Road in Stanley, NC. Reach them at 704-822-8803, on Instagram @bsg_lkn, or online at bloodsweatgearslkn.com where you can also register for this year’s Robin’s Ride for Hope. Shop hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, closed Wednesdays and Sundays.

ARE

YOU

PREPARED FOR SEVERE WEATHER?

Severe weather can come at any time in the year—whether it be an ice storm, tornado, heat wave, etc. Sometimes we have advanced notice, allowing us time to get ready, but there are also times it can catch us off guard. When you only have a moment’s notice to get ready, the key is to always be prepared for severe weather in multiple ways. When preparing for severe weather, there are several things to keep in mind, such as creating a communication plan, an emergency kit, and getting your home ready.

First, build an emergency kit that stays in a safe and accessible place in your house.

IN THIS KIT, YOU SHOULD INCLUDE:

• A three-day supply of non-perishable food and water. The American Red Cross suggests one gallon of water per person. This is to be used for drinking and hygiene. Don’t forget water bottles for drinking. Also, purchase a camping set for dishes or use paper plates.

• A battery-powered or hand crank radio. There are also solar options for radio available. A NOAA Weather Radio, such as a Midland, is best. A NOAA Weather Radio gives direct information from the National Weather Service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These radios can be purchased online or through major retailers.

• Portable lighting and extra batteries. Multiple flashlights, camping lights, and headlamps are great when there is no power.

• A first aid kit, medications, and medical items. If possible, ready a cooler for medications that need to be refrigerated. In addition, add to your first aid kit, N-95 masks disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, personal hygiene items, bleach, and trash bags. Include baby wipes and diapers, if you have young children.

• Copies of all important documents, including maps of your area, proof of address, birth certificates, insurance policies, bank account records, family and friends contact information, medical records and information, etc. Store these documents in a waterproof and fireproof box for safe keeping.

• A multi-use tool

• Duct tape

• Extra cash

• A rechargeable phone charger

• Lightweight, waterproof, and fireproof blankets

• Extra clothing for all members of your family, including rain gear and shoes

• Pet supplies

• A whistle for notifying emergency officials closeby

• Everyday items you’ll gather at the last minute

For winter, add a shovel, ice scraper, and snowbrush to your kit. Update your emergency kit at the start of every season to be sure that your batteries are still working and everything is in date. Also, take a quick look at your kit right before a weather event rolls in.

Second, have a communication plan in place for your family and practice that plan until everyone knows it by heart. This plan is designed to inform all of your family members what to do and where to go during emergencies and in case you are separated.

• Decide on a safe meeting space. This room will vary depending on the weather event. For example, choose a basement or interior room on the lowest floor with no window for a tornado or a tree in your front yard if your house is on fire (this place should be outside of your home). Also, confirm a place to meet outside of your neighborhood in case you are separated while evacuating or cannot return home. Always remember to pair children with an adult in these situations. Don’t forget to gather your pets and keep them safe, as well.

• Part of your communication plan should additionally include a contact person, outside of your household. Make sure that all of your household members have the contact person’s phone number and home address.

• Tell your family where the emergency kit is kept and what is inside.

• Lastly, practice this routine at least twice a year. Go through how to get out of the house safely and how to get to your safe room inside your home. Also, drive your evacuation route and to your meeting spot outside of your neighborhood and prepare alternate routes in case your first route is impassable.

Finally, get your home itself ready for severe weather. Secure loose objects outdoors, close windows and doors, wrap your pipes, and keep trees and branches trimmed near your home.

Severe weather can be scary, stressful, and impactful. However, the more prepared you are for severe weather, the less stressful it can seem. Take the time to build your emergency kit and plan. It is well worth it and you’ll be glad you did, if you ever need it.

Just like traditional schools, learning outside the daily classroom is usually a welcomed break for any student. Thumbing through the issues of this magazine, it’s easy to see that there are so many great opportunities for fun and excitement in the Lake Norman area. This includes outings with your kids that can present great educational value.

HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF WHERE WE HAVE GONE ON FIELD TRIPS OR TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF RESOURCES RIGHT IN THE AREA WE CALL HOME TO ENRICH OUR LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

1. The NORTHERN REGIONAL RECREATION CENTER IN CORNELIUS offers PE classes for students who school at home on various weekday mornings. There is a small fee involved, but they recently changed the registration process that allows you to register and pay only for the classes you attend. So, if you have plans in place that require you to miss a class, you can just skip registration for that date! There are also other fun activities and classes we have participated in there including game night and a kids’ cooking class.

2. Take your students to a TOWN HALL MEETING where you live. Introduce them to the Mayor and Commissioners before the meeting starts. Typically, the agenda for the meetings are posted online a few days prior to the session, and you can pick a day where there is a lighter agenda. Ask if you can sign them up to speak during public comments for 2-3 mins about a matter that is important to them, or better yet to talk about something they love about their town.

3. BRING YOUR KIDS WITH YOU WHEN YOU VOTE. Even when they are only in the pre-k/kindergarten ages. Sure, they may not understand the details of it all quite yet, but they will feel the weight of the importance. When they are older, you can start to teach them all about the democratic process and government, etc. While they are young, having them see you exercising your right to vote matters.

4. Visit THE LIBRARY and get to know your librarians. If your town has multiple locations, try to go to each one at least once per season. Help your kids get their own library card. Make sure you have one, too. Of course, we all get busy and you may not get to the library all of the time, but you want to be prepared for when you do go. Besides, a library card is required for online access to the plethora of resources available. Movies, music, e-books and audiobooks can all be obtained with a library card!

5. Call YOUR LOCAL POST OFFICE. See if they can give you a ‘backstage’ tour of how their operations work. We did this with some of our other friends that school at home as a mini field trip. Watch some videos about the history of the postal service before you go. Practice addressing letters to

family members the next day. Receiving an actual letter or postcard in the mail these days can be a fun surprise!

6. Try the same thing with your POLICE DEPARTMENT Many will try their best to work you into their schedule to share how they operate their headquarters. If the kids are lucky, they might get a fun K-9 demonstration while they are there. Some will fingerprint the kids for safety. Fire departments may also offer mini tours of their facilities. (Hint: it’s always fun to bring cookies or other goodies to our neighborhood heroes, and baking those treats can be a fun lesson in itself too!)

7. OK, technically this is slightly outside of the Lake Norman area, but the CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY hosts S.T.E.A.M day events! We visited this past spring and had a great time. The fee was fairly reasonable. Our day included a fun activity, a spin around the famous Charlotte Motor Speedway, and even a visit to the winner’s circle! Visit charlottemotorspeedway.com/experiences/steam/ homeschool-days/ for more information.

When you think back on your own educational history, field trips are likely some of your fondest memories. This is your shot to do the same for your kids, too! There are so many other fun places to explore the opportunities in Lake Norman are plentiful!

I’m anxious to learn more about places you visited with your family! Visit our exclusive Facebook group and create a post sharing your experiences! Scan the QR code here, or search for ‘LKN Magazine Readers’ on Facebook to join today!

FROM THE BRIDGE TO BELIZE

As Mother Teresa often shared: “We can do no big things, only small things with great love.”

“That’s kind of who we are right now,” says Watchmen of the Streets founder, Heath Burchett. “We focus on doing the small things oneon-one in people’s lives. That’s what made Mother Teresa so great.”

Watchmen of the Streets is a Christian, non-profit founded in 2009, that shares faith, friendship, and hope for the future with the local homeless. There are always miracles happening along the way, and in the case of Ray Shore, a true life-long impact.

“We served Ray under the bridge while he was experiencing

homelessness,” explains Heath. “Even while he was homeless he would volunteer with us, and help his neighbors who were in need. Many times he refused things from us, saying someone else needed them more.”

Heath adds that the group of volunteers has gained a valuable, lifelong friend in Ray—and a truly faithful volunteer.

“The past three years Ray has been off the streets, and a caregiver to his father in Rock Hill, SC,” explains Heath. “Despite the drive, he comes to every fundraiser, event, and homeless outreach that he possibly can.

48 | lkn-magazine.com
Left: Ray, living under the bridge while experiencing homelessness. Right: Ray volunteering with Wathcmen of the Streets on their recent mission in Belize.

He says he wants to repay the debt he owes Watchmen of the Streets for helping him, as well as continue to provide for those in great need. To us, there is no debt at all—we love him and he is one of our strongest volunteers! Who would have thought back in 2013—or during the 10 years we served him—that he would be off the streets and now helping others all he can, while raising his own funds to go on a mission trip to Belize.”

The mission “From the Bridge to Belize” took place May 6 - May 13, and participants included Heath, Ray, Jessica Fischer, Kelly West, Miguel Chavez, and Lennox Barnett. The group served in several ministries that Watchmen of the Streets—Habit Missions set up in 2009, and handed over to local volunteers to oversee there on a regular basis. Those included the Homeless Outreach (feeding, hearing stories, and praying for folks in Belize City who live in terrible conditions on the streets), providing groceries, bibles, flashlights, and of course prayers, to impoverished families living in wooden shacks in San Mateo and London Bridges (areas most locals won’t even visit due to gang violence), the Youth Rally (where youth were able to reach out to teens involved with gangs, or those who don’t attend church, through dance, reggae, hip hop, singing and worship), and worship services, where volunteers led services with local volunteers in Belize to encourage and strengthen those crucial, ongoing relationships.

Throughout every endeavor Ray is a hope for many, and a definite “ray” of sunshine for all involved in the program! Even with his own struggles of anxiety and PTSD, he encourages all those around him— acknowledging that once you’ve been homeless, you never forget that feeling—no matter how hard you try.

Heath says it’s interesting—and surprising—to hear people say they have heard of Watchmen of the Streets, yet there are even more that say they have never heard of the organization, and never knew anyone did what his group does.

“We believe the items we hand out are absolutely needed for the survival of many of our friends on the streets, yet the most powerful things that lead to achieved hopes and dreams are the personal relationships we form with them,” he adds.

Watchmen of the Streets ministers to the homeless who live under bridges, on the streets, and in homeless encampments in the woods around the Charlotte area, and throughout N.C., S.C., and even other countries. Resources for housing, medical aid, addiction recovery, food, clothing, and spiritual guidance are provided, with aid being brought directly to camps, where relationships are formed and many prayers are prayed. For more information and how you can volunteer, visit watchmenofthestreets.com.

CELEBRATING THE SWEET & NUTRITIOUS SUPERFRUIT

Blueberries, with their vibrant hue and delightful flavor, are not only a beloved summer fruit but also a nutritional powerhouse. So much so that July is designated as Blueberry Month, a time to celebrate the abundance and health benefits of this small but mighty superfruit. This article will delve into the history, nutritional value, culinary versatility, and ways to enjoy blueberries throughout the month-long celebration.

HISTORY OF BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries have a long and storied history, dating back thousands of years. Native to North America, blueberries were cherished by Indigenous peoples who recognized their healing properties. It wasn’t until the 20th century that commercial cultivation of blueberries began, making them widely available to the public. Today, the United States is one of the largest producers of blueberries in the world.

NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE

Blueberries are a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These small berries are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. They are also abundant in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which give blueberries their deep blue color and offer numerous health benefits. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

CULINARY VERSATILITY

Blueberries are not only delicious but also incredibly versatile in the culinary world. They can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, both in sweet and savory dishes. Fresh blueberries make a refreshing addition to breakfasts like smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, and pancakes. They can be baked into muffins, cakes, and pies, adding a burst of flavor and natural sweetness. Blueberries also pair well with savory ingredients, such as in salads, salsas, and sauces. Furthermore, they can be used to make jams, preserves, and syrups, offering a taste of summer all year round.

HEALTH BENEFITS

In addition to their delicious taste, blueberries offer an array of health benefits. Research suggests

BLUEBERRY YOGURT PARFAIT

Enjoy this refreshing and nutritious blueberry parfait for breakfast or as a healthy snack.

• 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

that the antioxidants found in blueberries may help improve brain function, boost memory, and protect against age-related cognitive decline. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit overall health, including heart health. Blueberries have been associated with improved blood pressure levels and reduced risk of heart disease. Furthermore, their high fiber content supports digestive health, aids in weight management, and promotes a healthy gut microbiome.

CELEBRATING BLUEBERRY MONTH

During Blueberry Month, there are numerous ways to celebrate and fully embrace the goodness of this superfruit. Visit local farmers’ markets or pick-your-own farms to indulge in freshly harvested blueberries. Host a blueberry-themed party or picnic, incorporating blueberry-infused drinks, desserts, and snacks. Encourage family and friends to join in by sharing recipes and enjoying blueberryinspired meals together. Additionally, consider freezing some blueberries to enjoy throughout the year, as they freeze exceptionally well.

BLUEBERRY ACTIVITIES AND FUN

Blueberry Month provides an opportunity for engaging activities and fun with blueberries. Organize a family-friendly blueberry picking excursion, allowing children to experience the joy of harvesting their own fruit. Plan blueberrythemed crafts and games, such as making blueberry paintings, creating blueberry-inspired recipes, or playing a blueberry-themed treasure hunt. Encourage children to learn about the history, science, and nutritional benefits of blueberries through educational activities and books.

Blueberry Month is a delightful celebration of the sweet and nutritious superfruit that brings joy and health benefits to our lives. By embracing the versatility of blueberries in our culinary creations, exploring their rich history, and engaging in fun activities, we can fully appreciate and savor the magic of these tiny berries. So, let’s indulge in the goodness of blueberries and make July a monthlong celebration of their vibrant flavor and amazing health benefits.

8 GREAT MOVIES about AMERICA

To celebrate the Fourth of July, we went looking for films with a patriotic flair. Stories that make us want to wave a flag, set off fireworks, and cheer the birth of our nation and all the wonderful things it has to offer. So, pass out the sparklers and prepare to feel that all American pride!

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)

Set during the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII, Saving Private Ryan is arguably one of the most popular war epics. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring well-known actors such as Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, and Matt Damon, the film takes you on a rollercoaster ride as Captain Miller (Hanks) takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency, and courage.

THE PATRIOT (2000)

Peaceful farmer Benjamin Martin is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a merciless British officer murders his son. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is a widowed farmer, with a brave but violent military past. Although he has set his mind on being a pacifist, that all changes when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy. He forms a regiment of Carolina patriots, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort.

FORREST GUMP (1994)

This comedy-drama is an all-time classic and favorite of many. The film’s depiction of American history through the eyes of the main character, Gump has been viewed by some critics as the ultimate representation of patriotism, perseverance, and having empathy for others. The film earned Tom Hanks his second Oscar win.

THE RIGHT STUFF (1983)

This adaptation of the non-fiction novel by Tom Wolfe chronicles the first 15 years of America’s space program. By focusing on the lives of the Mercury astronauts, including John Glenn (Ed Harris) and Alan Shepard (Scott Glenn), the film describes the dangers and frustrations faced by those involved with NASA’s earliest achievements. It also shows their family lives and the personal crises they endured during an era of great political turmoil and technological innovation. Chronicling the early years of the U.S. expedition into the Space Race, this thrilling story of innovation and the American spirit takes us straight to the stars.

TOP GUN (1986)

Thanks to one very cocky fighter pilot named Maverick (Tom Cruise), 1980s America never felt better about itself—or its military might. Tom Cruise as Maverick is the grinning poster boy of red-white-and-blue independence (“I feel the need...the need for speed”), defying his superiors, teasing his rivals, and, of course, getting the girl.

RED DAWN (1984)

Set in an alternate reality where the United States has been invaded by the Soviets and NATO has been disbanded, this action film is about a group of teenagers trying to save their small Colorado town from the invasion. It stars many well known actors and actresses including Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Leah Thompson, and C. Thomas Howell. A remake of the film starring Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck was also released in 2012.

INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996)

In this heroic adventure film, strange phenomena begin to surface around the world and terror spreads through the major cities. As these terrifying events unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that a force of incredible magnitude has arrived. Its mission: total annihilation of planet earth over the Fourth of July weekend. In an attempt to stop the destruction an unlikely group of people is assembled to try to save the world. This blockbuster pretty much set the precedent for July 4th weekend releases ever since its debut.

MIRACLE (2004)

Miracle is based on one of the most iconic moments in American sports history. In the middle of the Cold War and during a particularly rough economic period in America, a ragtag group of ice hockey players came together to play as a team and took down the all-powerful Soviet Union team during the 1980 Winter Olympics and took home the gold. College coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) is at the helm and brings a unique and brash style to the ice. Brooks is able to unite his squad against a common foe, the heavily-favored Soviet team.

Shooting Star Necklace by LunaFlo London

SPARKLES FROM ACROSS THE POND to LAKE NORMAN

Like millions of people, I spent a good amount of time this fall watching season 2 of HBO’s The White Lotus While most people were marveling at the breathtaking Italian scenery and their favorite actors, I was (at least partially) fixated on the jewelry. More specifically, the Shooting Star necklace.

It just popped off the screen every time I saw it. You know when you see something that just makes sense for you? There was something special about it. The simplicity of the star. It wasn’t too small and wasn’t too large. It was a Goldilocks moment. It was just right for me. I began my search to see where I could get one for myself.

After some sleuthing, I discovered that the designer of the necklace is Charlotte Pearson (Charlie) of London, England. She is the founder and creative director of LunaFlo London, named after her two daughters. Charlie designed a wonderful array of pieces as seen on season 2 of The White Lotus, and she has shared with me that she is also going to be dressing the cast in her jewelry for season 3! Hailing from Hampstead, North London, Charlie studied jewelry design at FIDM in Los Angeles before returning to London in 2016 to establish LunaFlo London in 2017.

I decided to bring a piece of London across the pond to Lake Norman. To me, it was art. It had small details that I appreciated, down to the intricate filigree work on the back. It wasn’t surprising at all that it was designed by an artist. There is such a unique quality to it. I have some other pieces of jewelry with stars and this fits right in.

Think about your own collection of jewelry. Whether the stones or metal are authentic or synthetic, it is ALL considered ‘fine.’ If you are like me, you may go through periods where you are putting on the same pair of earrings, necklace and rings every day. They are likely the most readily available on top of your dresser or even pieces you seldom take off at all! I am here to encourage you to rotate it all a little more often, or to take things a step further, by not saving your favorites for special occasions only. At the very least, consider more of your everyday life events as special occasions.

For those of you who think about adding more sparkle to your life, consider this. For centuries, jewels and gems have been the center of great mysteries, dramas, supposed curses, wars, and love affairs. We’ve heard great stories about the Crown Jewels, which celebrities have the swankiest engagement rings, or who’s worn things on loan from Harry Winston, Cartier or Tiffany

& Co to gatherings of the Hollywood elite like the Academy Awards.

Recently, I have been exploring the history of such famous wearable art. Especially those belonging to Marjorie Meriweather Post. Once the wealthiest woman in the United States, she donated a large portion of her collection to the Smithsonian, which are still on exhibit today. These blinding, shimmering pieces of history will stay behind the glass and out of reach for most of us and that’s OK. Truthfully, is it realistic that these wearable masterpieces and tiaras are suited for everyday wear anyway? Not really. Would it be fun if they were? Yes! What if I told you, that in a way, they can be?

While reading the March issue of LKN Magazine, I was stunned at the remarkable “feel alike” I experienced when seeing the ad for Juelerye Artisan Gallery & Gifts. That particular month, the rings featured by SC artist Kristen Baird were bursting with green gemstones. The fun, playful green made me think of so many things; green gumdrops with glistening sanding sugar, green stained-glass windows, green marbles that I might have played with on a summer day as a child, green sea glass waiting to be discovered at the beach. But then, I realized what was triggering that twinge of recognition. The larger stones were distinctly reminiscent of those adorning the famous Post Emerald Necklace which features over 650 Indian-cut emeralds!

Have you ever had your goldilocks moment when you saw a piece of jewelry that was ‘just right’ for you? Pieces created by artists have such a personal flair which is usually why people so easily gravitate towards them. As I continue to learn about historic pieces, I find that a large majority were commissioned to be specifically made for someone for a special occasion by, you guessed it—an artist. Usually it was for a wedding, coronation, a victory in war, birth of a baby, etc.

But in today’s world, none of these reasons are needed to add sparkle to your life. Go. Browse what the local shops and artists of Lake Norman have to offer. Find your Goldilocks moment.

I’d love to hear about your favorite piece of jewelry or your experience when shopping local or falling in love with something created by a local artist. THE COMPARISON TRAP Your Marriage vs. Their Marriage

Your Marriage is Unique: Embrace It!

Picture this: You’re sitting with your friends, sipping on your favorite beverage and casually discussing relationships. As stories unfold, you find yourself comparing your marriage to theirs, questioning whether you measure up or if something is amiss. I vividly remember doing this early on in my marriage. I asked myself, “Why are they getting along so well?” or “My wife does not treat me that way; look how she loves to do things for him.” Comparison is a trap and a dangerous gauge for the health of your marriage. We live in a world saturated with social media, highlight reels and sound bytes, and we get pulled into the comparison trap from the moment we wake up. But, here’s the truth—your marriage is unique, and comparing it to others is futile, yet, we do it often.

In working with couples, we find the comparison game kicks into high gear when they are going through a rough season in marriage and under the influence of extreme emotions or insecurities. A fight with your spouse can spin you into a place where you think every other marriage is perfect. Or, maybe you and your spouse are in sync, and you walk in pride, telling yourself that you have more together than your best friend’s marriage after she called to seek your advice. You and I know nobody is perfect, and there is no such thing as a perfect marriage. Yet, it’s so easy to stray from reality. People who compare their marriage to others will rob their marriage of joy. Comparison is the thief of joy, and it can kill your marriage.

Let’s look at how you can break free from the comparison trap.

1. RECOGNIZE THE ILLUSION

First and foremost, it’s crucial to acknowledge that comparing your marriage to others is comparing apples to oranges. Each relationship is complex and a mix of personalities, circumstances and experiences, making it impossible to draw an accurate comparison. Remember, you only see the highlight reels of others’ lives, not their behind-the-scenes struggles. Go ahead and look over the fence. The grass may seem greener, taller and more lush, but what you don’t see is all the crap in the grass— trust me, it’s there.

2. EMBRACE YOUR UNIQUENESS

Instead of fixating on what your marriage lacks in comparison to others, celebrate what makes it special. Every relationship has its strengths and weaknesses, its own rhythm and dynamics. Take pride in the qualities that define your marriage, and learn to express gratitude for the unique aspects that bring you and your spouse together. Embracing your uniqueness will cultivate a deeper appreciation for what you have.

3. HAVE A HEART OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude realigns your heart. It realigns your perspective and changes how you see your spouse. When you choose to have gratitude for your spouse, it will shift you from comparison to connection. Where comparison pulls you apart, gratitude will bring you together. It breeds connection, and when you are connected, comparison will fade.

4. DON’T COMPARE YOUR SPOUSE TO OTHER MEN OR WOMEN

A number of months ago, I worked with a man who could not free himself from the trap of comparing his wife to other women. His inability to look at the gift that was in front of him and look past the problems to see the person was destroying his marriage. Every time you compare your spouse to another, you build a case against them for why you deserve better. You married your spouse with their unique strengths and personality. Don’t look to the right or left. Look straight ahead at the person you have been blessed with. You said your vows and made a sacred commitment before God and family. Your spouse will not always be your favorite person. There will be days you are not on the same page. But,

Continued from page 56.

the most dangerous thing you can do is compare them to another man or woman.

When I officiate weddings, I tell couples that their marriage is a beautiful tapestry woven from the threads of two unique individuals and two distinct lives. Comparing it to others is futile and can only breed dissatisfaction and disunity. Instead, focus on nurturing and celebrating the uniqueness of your partnership. When it gets tough, focus on what is right and good and what has brought you together. Be grateful for the person you are blessed to call your spouse and refuse to allow the current struggle or pain to turn your head away to look at the false reality around you. Embrace the beautiful imperfections of your marriage, and watch it thrive and grow stronger.

So, the next time you gather with friends and sip your favorite beverage, don’t compare; celebrate your spouse and marriage!

I WILL STOP PROCRASTINATING…TOMORROW! FIVE TIPS TO STOP THIS LIMITING BEHAVIOR

Procrastination is a common struggle that affects individuals from all walks of life. It’s the art of delaying important tasks and falling for the allure of short-term gratification. While it may provide temporary relief, chronic procrastination can hinder personal growth, career advancement, and overall well-being. The good news is that change is possible! By understanding the underlying causes of procrastination and implementing effective strategies, anyone can break free from its grasp and embrace a more productive and fulfilling life.

RECOGNIZE THE ROOT CAUSES

To combat procrastination, it’s essential to identify its root causes. For many, fear of failure or success, perfectionism, lack of motivation, or feeling overwhelmed can contribute to procrastinatory behaviors. Reflect on your own reasons for procrastination and consider how they manifest in your life. Understanding the underlying factors will help you develop targeted strategies to address them.

SET CLEAR AND ATTAINABLE GOALS

Procrastination often thrives in the absence of clear goals. Establishing specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals can provide a roadmap for your actions. Break down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps to create a sense of accomplishment and momentum. Additionally, set deadlines for each step to maintain accountability.

DEVELOP EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

Time management plays a crucial role in overcoming procrastination. Start by prioritizing tasks based on importance and urgency. Utilize productivity tools such as to-do lists, calendars, or time-tracking apps to organize your schedule and stay on track. Additionally, consider implementing techniques

like the Pomodoro Technique (watch for more on this in the August issue), which involves working for focused periods of time followed by short breaks, to enhance productivity and prevent burnout.

EMBRACE THE POWER OF MINDSET

Procrastination often stems from negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs. Cultivating a growth mindset can transform your perspective and help you overcome procrastination. Challenge selfdefeating thoughts by replacing them with positive affirmations and empowering beliefs. Practice self-compassion and acknowledge that mistakes and setbacks are part of the learning process. By adopting a growth-oriented mindset, you’ll be more resilient in the face of challenges and less prone to procrastination.

BUILD ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS

Creating external sources of accountability can be a gamechanger when it comes to overcoming procrastination. Share your goals and progress with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor who can provide support and hold you accountable. MOUNT MITCHELL STATE PARK: Exploring the Majestic Peaks of the East

Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, Mount Mitchell State Park stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty and natural wonders of the region. Located in Yancey County 30 miles northeast of Asheville, Mount Mitchell State Park was the genesis of North Carolina’s state parks system. Home to the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, this state park offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a diverse and captivating mountain environment. Today, LKN readers, we will delve into the rich history, breathtaking scenery, recreational activities, and ecological significance of Mount Mitchell State Park.

“The mountains are calling, and I must go.”
- JOHN MUIR

BRIEF HISTORY

Named after Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a distinguished scientist and professor at the University of North Carolina, Mount Mitchell holds a significant place in American exploration. Dr. Mitchell accurately measured the peak’s elevation in the mid-19th century, eventually leading to the mountain being named in his honor. The area surrounding Mount Mitchell became North Carolina’s first state park in 1915, preserving its natural beauty for generations to come to explore.

RECREATION

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.”

MAJESTIC PEAKS AND SCENIC VIEWS

The centerpiece of Mount Mitchell State Park is undoubtedly the namesake peak, towering at an elevation of 6,684 feet. Hiking to the summit is a rewarding experience, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The Mount Mitchell Trail, is an exhilarating trek, allowing hikers to witness the breathtaking vistas along the way. Easy trails at the summit explore the Fraser fir forest, while a vast network of challenging trails—including the Mountainsto-Sea State Trail—extend into adjacent wilderness areas and lead to backpacking opportunities within Pisgah National Forest.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Mount Mitchell State Park boasts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park’s high elevation creates a unique habitat for many plant and animal species typically found in more northern regions. Visitors can encounter a variety of tree species, including spruce and Fraser fir forests,

while vibrant wildflowers grace the meadows during the summer months. Birdwatchers can spot species such as the dark-eyed junco and the black-throated blue warbler. The park is also home to larger mammals like black bears and white-tailed deer.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Mount Mitchell State Park offers educational programs and interpretive exhibits to enrich visitors’ understanding of the park’s ecology, geology, and cultural history. The park’s museum and visitor center provide a wealth of information on the region’s unique ecosystem, the mountain’s geology, and the fascinating story of Dr. Mitchell’s exploration. Guided hikes and ranger-led programs allow visitors to delve deeper into the park’s natural wonders while learning about conservation efforts and the importance of preserving this pristine mountain environment.

CAMPING AND PICNIC AREAS

For those wishing to extend their stay, Mount Mitchell State Park offers both camping and picnic areas. The park’s family campground provides tent sites and a limited number of RV sites, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquil mountain setting. Picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, offering a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal surrounded by nature’s splendor.

UNIQUE FEATURES

Besides being the highest point east of the Mississippi, each season brings its own unique charm to Mount Mitchell State Park. Spring showcases vibrant wildflowers and budding foliage, while summer invites hikers and campers to explore the trails and soak up the sunshine. Fall transforms the landscape into a tapestry of fiery

colors, attracting visitors from far and wide. Winter brings a serene and snow-capped wonderland, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”

After watching a beautiful sunset at Mount Mitchell, it is time to explore the surrounding area. Located in close proximity to the charming town of Burnsville and within driving distance of Asheville, Mount Mitchell State Park offers easy access to additional attractions in the area. Explore the quaint shops and local art scene in Burnsville, or visit Asheville’s vibrant downtown area, known for its eclectic restaurants, breweries, and the historic Biltmore Estate.

Mount Mitchell State Park is a natural gem that captivates visitors with its towering peaks, breathtaking views, and abundant wildlife. Whether hiking to the summit, camping under the stars, or simply enjoying a picnic in the park, this remarkable destination invites us to embrace the wonders of the Appalachian Mountains and appreciate the beauty of our natural surroundings.

Freedom from flaws: FINDING FACE WITH FAV FEATURES

In a celebrity centered culture where nipping and tucking and concealing our so-called “flaws” have become commonplace, and the beauty industry is raking in our hard-earned money, it’s time for a healthier perspective.

How boring would we be if we were just one color, look, shape, size, and gender? Counter adversity with diversity and be grateful for it. From the fairest pale to the darkest dark, egg white to black coffee, and every shade in between, there are no unworthy or ugly shades, shapes, or sizes.

Flaws that can be features.

No need to be browbeat, whether you have bushy brows, a la Brooke Shields and Arizona Muse, sparse hairs penciled in, or none at all.

And, no need to conceal that mole. Instead, regard it respectfully as a signature beauty mark. Marilyn Monroe and Cindy Crawford didn’t turn to concealer or have their moles removed. Instead, they embraced those “flaws” and turned them into iconic features of classic beauty.

No need to hide your smile with perfectly evenly spaced teeth. Mind the gap between your teeth (known as diastema) by embracing it with confidence. You may have been called “Bucky the Beaver,” at one time, but don’t let the bullies get you down. What do celebrities Arnold Schwarzenegger, Madonna, and David Letterman have in common? A notable feature is the gap between their front teeth in their toothy smiles. Lauren Hutton didn’t let this stop her from gracing multiple magazine covers.

And, for those tall and lanky ladies, made fun of as being awkward and unwieldy with the longest of limbs, from basketball court to catwalk, stand proud of being tall—while for the tiny and short, be proud of being petite. No need to look down on Thumbelina or Tinkerbell.

Finding face with fav features.

Here are some tips on fully accepting and appreciating who you are naturally and turning flaws into features.

Make a list of what you or others may perceive as flaws. Sometimes these authentic attributes can be our best features. Then look in the mirror or snap a selfie and verbally accept, affirm, and appreciate your whole self, including the flaws you’ve listed. Focus on one at a time and go through your list starting with the flaws you feel most self-conscious and insecure about. Instead of hiding, concealing, and fixing with a forensic nip and tuck, shift how you think and feel instead. You are more capable and empowered than you may realize.

See yourself as a unique work of art that doesn’t need to look like every other piece of art. Art appreciation can open important windows and doors in your mind and spirit. Remind yourself there’s only one version of you, with no carbon copy, and go forth with confidence.

Instead of covering up freckles, embrace them as being beautiful angel or sun kisses. Learn to love the skin you’re in and be proud of your natural beauty in its purest form. Go au naturel and focus on a skincare routine which can be simple as cleanse, exfoliate, tone, and moisturize. Tweeze only the stray hairs of your brows or let them grow.

Whatever your hair color, type and texture, let those locks be just the way they are. Also, forgo the heat styling, and let your hair air dry naturally. Keep your tresses healthy, clean, and conditioned. Instead of hair products laden with chemicals that can be endocrine-disruptors and harmful to your health, smooth some coconut, argan, or olive oil, and pamper yourself with a scalp massage. Add essential oils to the carrier oils for a luxuriating aromatherapy experience and breathe in deeply. Try whipping together some natural DIY hair treatments like masks, conditioners, and rinses that bring out the vibrance and shine.

Avoid analysis paralysis and judging yourself. Affirm your appearance in positive ways so you don’t see your self-proclaimed “flaws” as embarrassing, negative, or shameful.

Just think of all the time, money and energy you’ll conserve and gain back when you no longer try to “fix” them! Your thoughts are powerful, and it’s up to you to love and accept yourself.

CARE & SUPPORT THAT CONTINUES to GROW

SUPPORT FOR THEIR MISSION.

Co-founder, Jean Mims, has served in the ministry for nearly 38 years and shares what distinguishes the center from other resources a young woman may have.

“We exist only through support from local churches, businesses and individuals,” explains Jean. “We receive no funding from the government, but we are blessed that three fundraising events each year (including their banquet in May that exceeded their fundraising goals!) are successful enough to provide help, hope and resources to women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy.”

The center’s relationship with a client typically begins with a pregnancy test and free ultrasound – the important tool that first introduces a mom to her baby, and may be the exact moment she chooses to parent. Clients always find team members to be friendly, educated and nonjudgmental.

Once a mother-to-be embraces her role, the pregnancy center also offers the HOPE Program – a year-long support initiative with monthly group meetings and ties to an incentive program where new mothers can obtain much-needed baby items.

“Our goal is to offer a hand up, not a hand-out,” says Jean. “Each HOPE Program meeting is hosted by a local church group that provides dinner and a time of devotion for our clients. We walk beside them every step of the way! Of course, the best thing about being involved is interacting with the precious babies!”

The center also offers adoption information for moms who may need to consider this as a parenting plan. They are not an adoption agency, nor do they coordinate adoptions, but information on this loving option allows a birth mother the opportunity to plan her baby’s family and future.

AS A FAITH-BASED MINISTRY, THE COMMUNITY PREGNANCY CENTER OF LAKE NORMAN BELIEVES THAT STEADFAST FAITH IS WHAT IT TAKES TO BELIEVE IN THE UNEXPECTED—AND TO EMBRACE THE WAY THE LORD HAS PROVIDED SUCH AMAZING

TO THE

“Since we were their local Pregnancy Center, we were the recipients of this generous gift,” says Jean. “In addition to our two current locations in Mooresville and Huntersville, this MMU will act as a third location!”

Having the mobile unit will allow the center to expand services into the community and increase the chance to offer free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. After dedicating the unit on April 1st, 2023, the group recently completed construction on a garage for storing the MMU with logistics and more firm schedules for the mobile unit set to be finalized over the summer.

“While our hope is to empower moms to choose parenting, and we don’t perform or offer referrals for abortions, we do offer a healing journey called Forgiven and Set Free for clients who may have had an abortion in the past,” adds Jean.

Above all, the caring team at the Community Pregnancy Center of Lake Norman is always there to help! Contact them to discuss your personal situation, ask questions or schedule an appointment. Their free pregnancy services are available for same-day appointments when available.

The North Center is located at 212 Caldwell Avenue in Mooresville, 704.664. HOPE (4673), and the South Center is located at 201 North Old Statesville Road in Huntersville, 704.727.0535. For updates on the mobile unit, follow the Community Pregnancy Center of Lake Norman on Facebook, or send your email address to contactus@lakenormancpc. org to receive their monthly newsletter. GROWING A BUSINESS…TWO AT A TIME!

Standing strong during the pandemic, the local full-service catering and event coordination company made a quick move to take over Queens Landing Marina in May of 2020, which meant taking over and upgrading the 3,000-square-foot commercial kitchen, changing the Boat Menu, and taking the marina to the next level with fine dining cruises. Even with Chef Alexander out for over four months with two major surgeries, his dedicated Culinary and Field Team still orchestrated 275 catering events by November! Then, more change arrived in mid-November 2022, when the Marina was purchased by an outside buyer, and the catering business and dinner boats had to relocate. Still, the entire team stepped up and did 80 holiday catering events in the first three weeks of December!

“It only took 24 hours to move everything to our back-up commercial kitchen, but we still had a 1,300-square-foot office, showroom, and supply storage at Langtree,” Chef Alexander explains. But this is a business owner who is savvy, resourceful, and always thinking ahead!

Now, with an even more exciting—and quickly expanding—catering business, Chef Alexander and his team have acquired a 4,000-squarefoot facility at the Talbert Pointe Business Park in Mooresville. The future is bright, and there’s a new business on the horizon.

“With 4,000-square-feet, we have designated room for a new mini showroom, wedding tastings, and plenty of storage for our future merger with a large, full-service (but yet to be named!) Charlotte-based wedding planning venue and full wedding event rental company. And, there will also still be wonderful space for yet another new venture,” says Chef Alexander. “The merger actually came about after the wedding planning company asked us to redesign a current building they own, as an event center in the new business district in South End Charlotte.

It was clearly a perfect match! The new space will also house the Lake Norman management office of Architectural Design Build Firm, focusing on architecture, construction, and 3D design projects for select, discerning clients. So far this year the design business has already signed five new clients.

Having lived near Lake Norman for 21 years, Chef Alexander is a Veteran U.S. Army Military Police Ranger, and former design consultant turned food consultant in 2011. Lake Norman Catering is known and respected for creating all kinds of events from weddings to corporate events and boat parties, and they have catered at over 18 Lake Norman area venues, and many in the metro Charlotte area. They truly do it all: event planning, catering, bar service, transportation, and overall hospitality coordination. Your menu is always in the very best culinary hands for everything from a fully plated, fine dining experience, to your own backyard barbecue bash for an intimate guest list, with vegetarian and vegan choices always an option. Chef Alexander has assembled a first-class, established culinary team, along with a large catering field staff flexible enough to accommodate thousands of meals at the same time!

Lake Norman Catering’s vision of food as artwork—always with unforgettable presentations—continues to delight clients for every kind of corporate or social event, along with service that is unsurpassed.

Consultations with Lake Norman Catering are available by appointment only, by calling 704-438-9777, or visiting LakeNormanCatering.com for an event quote. You can also learn more about the new business venture at LakeNormanDesignBuild.com.

UGANDA: PART 2

LAST MONTH WE SHARED SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR TRIP TO UGANDA. NOW WE WILL SHARE SOME OF THE TOURISTY THINGS WE DID ON THAT TRIP.

We took several trips into the jungle where the guide carried a 30-06 rifle (in case we somehow “upset” a gorilla or a wild elephant or a lion). We didn’t get very far into the gorilla park before we saw a family of gorillas in the trees. The young ones were having a fun time swinging in trees looking like they were playing tag, but the male gorilla was close by, keeping his eye on everything. I guess the kids got too close to us or they disobeyed daddy in some way, because he let out a roar and swung down near us. We all jumped back, a little scared, and I no longer wondered why the guide had the rifle with him.

ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE
72 | lkn-magazine.com

We got to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions. They gave us highpowered binoculars to watch a lion eating a gazelle that he had just ran down. There are so many unbelievable sights unique to Uganda. We got to travel to Murchison Falls National Park. The falls are spectacular and part of the country’s largest wildlife sanctuary. We saw the falls by boat, which gave us the opportunity to see much more wildlife, such as hippos, rhinos, crocodiles and unbelievable bird life. We even saw the birds that built their nest upside down. When the nest is finished, the female comes by to check it out. If she doesn’t like it, the nest ends up on the ground, and he must start over. Humm, sounds like some people I know.

One of the highlights for me was when we went to a very nice resort. These were classier buildings using bamboo and thatch, but this place was noted for its showers. I couldn’t believe it, but I was going to try. Sure enough, I got warm water on demand. Of course, I kept the man busy filling up the pot over the fire. We also slept under a net every night to reduce the chance of getting malaria. It took a little getting used to, but it worked. No malaria, thank God.

Then the kids had another idea. They wanted a library in the area, especially for the children. They had been getting books from friends in the States and setting them up on their porch. The children loved them, because books were in short supply, even in the schools. Brent and Donna brought the idea of a library to the King of the local tribe. He thought it was such a good idea that he gave them a building in the village to house the library. When we got back to the States, we got our church involved in sending books to Uganda as well. The Director of the Uganda National Library was at the Grand Opening and said that this was one of the finest libraries in Uganda and the only functioning children’s library in the whole country. The library project was very successful and is still going today.

Before we left Uganda, we went to church with the native people, and it was such a wonderful experience. They all wanted a closer look and maybe to touch the unusual visitors of their country. The children there are as happy as any place we have traveled to, and they continue to be grateful for the library Brent and Donna set up in their community.

Pray for Uganda!

HOW MUCH

WORK COULD A DOCK BE?

When we decided to relocate to the lake, my wife put herself in charge of the house and me in charge of the dock. Great, I thought, how hard could it be to get a dock? We didn’t want anything special, and docks look to me like nothing but fancy pallets. I figured it’d take a weekend and not cost too much.

Two weeks later I started making phone calls. The first guy who I managed to get on the phone hung up on me when I told him my budget. He didn’t even take the time to laugh in my face, he just hit the “end call” button and went on with his life.

The next guy who I got on the phone asked my budget, and I said something that I thought would be astronomically high. He said their docks start at three times my budget and the wait time to get on their project list was a year long anyway.

So, I chose to go a non-traditional route—I’d build it myself. A few minutes of research online helped me find a few “dock in a box” kits. I sketched out my dock on a piece of graph paper, scanned it, and sent it to Duke Energy for my permit.

That’s when I found out you need to have a building permit in order to apply for a Duke Energy dock permit. And even though the woman who worked at the permitting office in my county was very polite, she made it clear that my graph paper drawing did not meet the minimum requirements. She said I’d need

“Engineer-stamped plans” to get my building permit.

And that’s when I found out there’s an online cottage industry of engineers willing to put their stamp on just about any engineered plans for a low fee of $100. So, I sent two of these engineers my graph paper drawing. Even in the fast-andloose gray market of buying engineer stamps, these guys wouldn’t even have anything to do with me.

Just when I thought my dreams of owning a reasonably priced dock had been destroyed by red tape and bureaucracy, I discovered that when people build huge beautiful new docks, they sell their old junky docks on Craigslist. I found one, and the woman who I ended up buying an old floating dock from even said her “dock guy” would install it for me at a reasonable price. I discovered it’s a lot easier to get building and Duke permits when the dock has been floating in the lake for 15 years.

In the end her dock guy’s price was reasonable, at least compared to what new docks cost. This dock guy no-showed for three appointments. Then he came to my house when I was away and installed the dock in the wrong spot using pylons that were about 10 feet too long and had to be cut down to size later.

I’m sure there’s a good life lesson in there somewhere, but the only one I learned is: “Don’t put me in charge of building a dock.”
