Hunt for Happiness Week 2025
By JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
Ah, happiness...
Beware of the glitter, glam and flash because it’s not the late model cool car, the gorgeous house, the extravagant vacations or the couture wardrobe that will sustain your happiness. Money can buy a great lifestyle, along with tantalizing comfort and luxury, but happiness? No, it can’t do that.
So, what does make people – you, me, our relatives and friends – happy?
Psychology Today cuts to the chase in these succinct words: “Happy people live with purpose. They find joy in lasting relationships, working toward their goals and living according to their values.” The happy amongst us, they add, also take pleasure and contentment from life’s simple pleasures and conclude that all of this is largely within our control. How cool is that?
Which brings me to “Hunt for Happiness Week.” Yes, it is a real thing, started in 2001 by “The Society of Happy People.” I love that these seven days (1/21 – 1/27 this year) commence after the holiday rush and fanfare when most of us have settled back into the routine rhythm of our lives. I also love that this week encourages us to focus on what has proven to foster happiness: living with a sense of purpose, fostering meaningful relationships, pursuing specific goals and, not the least of which, living according to our values. All of which are nurtured by our day-to-day choices and actions.
Can You Spot a Happy Person?
A happy person:
…is typically open to learning new things and is high in humility and patience.
…smiles and laughs readily, goes with the flow, expresses gratitude, practices compassion and exercises self-care.
…enjoys healthy relationships and is happy for other people.
…doesn’t feel entitled, has fewer expectations, isn’t spiteful or insulting, doesn’t play games or hold grudges.
…doesn’t fret over yesterday or tomorrow, isn’t a martyr or a victim and, DRUMROLL please:
…is generous with his or her happiness.
Who doesn’t want to be around a happy person? And, more to the point of what is within our control, why not commit to working on your own personal happiness?
The Society of Happy People explains that “Hunt for Happiness week is all about hunting for reasons to be happy. The general theme of everyone’s life is about finding happiness. Hunt for Happiness week is all about celebrating the little joys in life. It is not about being happy all the time; it is about making the best out of little things as much as we can.”
As a wise person noted: “It isn’t happiness per se that promotes well-being, it’s the actual pursuit that’s key.” So, what can you do to embrace the Hunt for Happiness Week? Read on!
Happiness-Cultivating Activities to Pursue this Week
• Revisit your sense of purpose. I know that my purpose has certainly shifted over time, while its core remains the same.
• Express yourself: tell others what makes you happy.
• Cultivate relationships: reach out to someone who has made you happy.
• Exchange ideas with someone close to you about how to increase the happy in your lives.
• Intentionally indulge in small pleasures and challenging activities.
• Set one or two goals and take concrete steps to progress toward achieving them.

Marzano Capital Group Time In, Not Timing
By MIKE MCGILVARY, AIF®, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Easier said than done right? We hope working with our team has made you and your family feel more confident during times of market sell-offs and headline risk (like recently!).
If you think about it logically, the “time in, not timing” theory applies to most goals. Retirement, health and fitness, college savings, your golf or tennis game, etc...
Small steps, like continuously adding to your 401k or non-retirement accounts during market sell-offs can make substantial differences over time.
In our opinion, the success of investment returns depends on your commitment to stick to the plan. Staying invested during times of market volatility can be unnerving, but if you look back at the more violent “market crashes”, patient investors typically came out the other side positive.
Staying invested and being strategic by shifting portions of your portfolio to buy quality stock and bond sectors when they are lower in price is what we try to achieve for you.
We are never going to be “All-in or All-out”. That is not a fiduciary way to manage client assets in our opinion, however please know we attempt to be as proactive as we can by keeping your assets diversified and making shifts throughout the years to hopefully help grow your asset base in a manner you feel comfortable with.
Thank you to all our clients over the years who have trusted our process. It is a privilege to help you reach your goals!

Bennett Funeral Service is all about treasuring family — not only as part of their dedication to operating a family owned business — but also for the families they serve, at a time when a respected, trusted source is most needed.
Established in 2013 by Robbie and Rhonda Bennett, the original location is still part of the Conover, NC community, while the main office in Newton opened in November of 2019. The Bennetts’ son, Kyle, and his wife, Lindsay Gilliam Bennett, also joined the business and are dedicated to the mission of creating a home-like atmosphere for the families they serve.
You’ll find local art adorning the walls of each room, and both the front and back porches of their building feature rocking chairs. When you’re facing overwhelming emotion or a difficult decision, there’s always a spot for a quiet, comfortable retreat.
“Being a family business allows us to better understand our community’s values and background,” shares Robbie. “We have a deep understanding of the nature of funeral service, as we have passed experiences down from one generation to another — and to our employees, who are seen as family members.”
Sharing a community spirit — shopping in the same stores, attending church together and involvement in the same local events and school outings — forms a bond that makes a valuable difference when navigating the passing of a family member.
team that local families can count on.
“Our employees feel inspired and empowered knowing their needs and concerns can be voiced directly to the owners, rather than lost in a more corporate environment,” adds Rhonda.
Voted Best Funeral Service in the Catawba Valley for 10 consecutive years and awarded Best Customer Service and Best Place to Work in 2024, the Bennett team is known for its attention to detail in helping families make plans that align with both their values and their budgets.
“With people having access to so much information via the internet, they come in with a lot of knowledge ahead of meeting with us,” Robbie explains. “They have accurate information, but also many misconceptions, so our first step is to educate them on all of their options.
Ultimately, we want to provide families with the funeral plan they want based on having a full understanding of reality versus fiction.”
Aftercare Director Sherry Jones follows up with all families after their services and connects them with Healing Hearts Aftercare — gatherings that are wonderful times of fellowship with a meal courtesy of Bennett Funeral Service.

Pre-planning your funeral is always a topic of conversation, offering the chance to relieve the emotional and financial burden from loved ones. Bennett Funeral Service conducts several pre-planning seminars throughout the year, highlighting the benefits of pre-planning and providing no-obligation consultation services. Pre-need counselors will commute to a family’s location or meet at one of the convenient office locations, or pre-planning literature can be mailed to you. Pre-planning has increased in popularity in recent years, and Robbie shares that nearly half the families they serve have some type of pre-planned arrangements in place.
The Bennett family is also dedicated to seeing that every veteran they serve (and their family) is provided a service that honors
his or her service to our country. They will help coordinate with the military and local veteran’s groups to provide military honors at the service and assist the family with necessary documents to provide the family with a flag, grave marker and possible burial or inurnment in a veteran’s cemetery.
From their family to yours, compassion will always be a top priority and one that truly makes all the difference!
Bennett Funeral Service is located at 7878 NC Highway 16 in Newton, NC, 828.465.2111, and in Conover, NC at 502 1st Avenue South, 828.465.2025. The Bennett family also proudly supports community efforts through The Corner Table Soup Kitchen and Back Pack Program, Carolina Caring and local school and community events.
“Bennett Funeral Service handled the funerals for both my father and mother. They are so impressive — professional, kind and very focused to ensure every detail is covered. Highly recommend and would absolutely use them again in the future!” - CHERYL H.
“Truly a class act! There is no other place I would want to do my mother’s arrangements than Bennett Funeral Service. They truly went above and beyond with all my mother’s wishes and made my family proud.” - JASON P.
“I’m a 30-year-old who lost my mother recently, and I chose to work with Bennett because I saw them care for my aunt and uncle. I live a county over and passed several funeral homes because I wanted to utilize their services. I am very glad I did. The team was very easy to work with during a difficult time. The Newton facility is immaculate and the staff is well polished. I highly recommend them.” - NEAL I.
Be Well Table HEALTHIER POTATO SOUP
By KATHARINE ROSENTHAL, RDN
Soup is the ultimate cozy dish, but it can sometimes pack in extra saturated fat. Try this lightened-up potato soup to get both nourishment and coziness!
Servings: 8
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 2 hours
Total time: 2.5 hours
Ingredients:
• 4 large russet potatoes
• Salt
• Avocado oil
• 2 sticks of butter
• 1 white onion, diced
• ¾ cup whole wheat flour
• 6 cups vegetable broth
• 2 cups water
• Celery salt, to taste
• ½ teaspoon pepper
• ¼ teaspoon basil
• ¼ teaspoon sugar
• 1 ½ cups milk of choice
• 4 slices of cooked bacon, chopped
• Chives, chopped
• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. While it heats, rinse and scrub the potatoes, then dry them off. Pierce each one with a fork a few times.
2. Rub a little avocado oil and sprinkle salt over each potato. Place them directly on the oven rack and bake for about an hour.
3. While the potatoes cook, crisp up the bacon in a medium pan.
4. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until soft. Stir in the flour, and cook for about three minutes.
5. Slowly pour in the chicken broth, water, celery salt, pepper, basil and sugar, whisking constantly until it boils.
6. Gradually add the milk until you get your desired soup consistency.
7. Cut the baked potatoes into bite-sized cubes and add them to the soup. Add one cup of the cheese. Let everything simmer for five minutes.
8. If you like a smoother consistency, use an immersion blender to blend the soup; you can also use a blender.
9. Serve the soup with crispy bacon, chives or cheddar cheese on top. Enjoy!

NeoGenix Stem Cell & Regenerative Therapies Following a Natural Path
Written By MARTIE EMORY
Photography By JEJ PHOTOS
When chronic joint pain puts a damper on your beloved daily activities – and casts a shadow on quality time with family and friends – the quest for even temporary relief can be a challenge.
Once you’ve reached the point where medicines are only masking the pain, and you’re anxious to avoid the surgery route, look to a natural alternative that reaches the underlying cause of your condition – NeoGenix Stem Cell & Regenerative Therapies. Ultimately, patients decide if regenerative therapy is a good fit for them – but the benefits are impressive and include no surgery, no medications and no downtime.
With locations in both Cornelius and Charlotte, Co-Founder and Director of Operations Niko Miles and Co-Founder and Owner Dr. James Altizer, welcome patients to become better acquainted with Dr. Richard Kuzma, DO, Medical Director at NeoGenix Lake Norman. Dr. Kuzma brings a fresh outlook to getting back to the activities you love most!
With a bachelors degree in bio-chemistry, a masters in biomedical engineering and a medical degree from Michigan State University, Dr. Kuzma has always been fascinated by the depth of healing our bodies can accomplish on their
own – and how much they can achieve with the assistance of medical interventions.
“Well before medical school, I was part of a biomedical engineering program that focused on figuring out what factors affect growth and development of specific cells,” he shares. “Specifically, there were studies about the way bone cells grew and developed and with what surfaces they preferred to attach. I learned there are so many specifics to each situation and that each one of our tissues/cells is happy to grow and develop if given the right stimulation. I came in contact with both Niko and Dr. Altizer through a mutual acquaintance and discovered our common interest. It was fantastic to find out they were not only doing patient care that addressed the whole patient, they were also well ahead of the understanding of stem cell patient treatment that I had at that time. After meeting the entire team, I had no doubts of the success of the future clinic and the grade A-level patient care.”
It’s not surprising that, even as a child, Dr. Kuzma loved science and the idea of “fixing things” to make them better! He is adamant that every patient is assessed at NeoGenix as an individual and given an honest assessment of their options, not only stem cell treatment. Sadly, that can include advising patients when they’re not candidates for stem cell treatment, due to the severity of their degeneration, and they are referred for surgery.
“We always have an open conversation about all the factors that can affect care which can include their other health issues, level of daily activity and what their ongoing joint pain is preventing them from doing. I would describe it as low pressure, friendly and honest communication – while we advise them on ongoing healthcare options.”
He adds that introducing patients to the idea of regenerative medicine typically involves a conversation that begins with the statement “our bodies have a great capacity to heal.”
“As we age, that capacity decreases little by little until those daily insults to knees, hips or backs start to add up,” he says. “We help restart that day-to-day healing by using your own cells.”
In 2016, Dr. Kuzma moved his family to the Charlotte area, working as a board certified family physician at Atrium Health. He quickly established himself as a trusted provider for many families in the Lake Norman area – and immediately grew to love the community. He is now comfortably settled into the Lake Norman area with his wife and their blended family of six children.
“It’s a 30-minute drive from the city, all the local parks, a short drive to the mountains and schools that are some of the best in NC,” he says.
It has been the perfect scenario for what Dr. Kuzma knew was his calling – having his own stem cell clinic. After months of stem cell and PRP training with Dr. Altizer (to complement his already expert injection experience), Dr. Kuzma was named Medical Director when NeoGenix Lake Norman opened in April of 2023.
NeoGenix treatments are endorsed by both amateur and professional athletes, and they work with the top physical therapists in the Charlotte area to provide ongoing healing. Rehab is an important part of the regenerative process, and physical therapy is essential to help with muscle weakness, incorrect muscle firing patterns and compensation issues. Regenerative therapies are generally successful for pain in joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments –with knees, backs and shoulders the most common ailments seen at NeoGenix. At your free consultation, you’ll receive a physical examination of your problem area, a review of your medical history and a review of your current diagnostic imaging, such as an x-ray
or MRI. If you don’t have current imaging, the doctors can order imaging or perform an ultrasound as part of the free consultation.
Enjoying a pain-free life may only be a phone call away! NeoGenix Stem Cell & Regenerative Therapies is located at 16147 Lancaster Highway, Suite 140, in Charlotte, and at 19475 Old Jetton Road, Suite 102, in Cornelius, 704.727.6551. Email info@neogenixstemcells.com for more information, follow them on Facebook and Instagram @neogenixstemcells, and learn more about their treatment and therapy options at neogenixstemcells.com.
Celebrating the Power of Walking THIS JANUARY 20th !
This upcoming January 20th joins all in recognizing the power of walking, especially outdoors, during “Take a Walk Outdoors Day.” While the cold January weather may dissuade many from venturing outdoors, it is vital for your physical and mental health, to throw on your comfortable shoes, and move outside. Physically, taking a walk outside can bring a variety of different benefits, from improving blood circulation, to reducing risks of lung cancer, to improving your skin and posture, the list goes on and on. Walking outdoors also can have several mental benefits, including boosting your morale and improving your social skills. While exercising for any amount of time can be helpful, it is important to aim to walk for at least 30 minutes. This can give your body the time to truly reap the benefit of this cardio. Ready to move outside? Read on for the top eight benefits for taking a walk outdoors and leave the couch behind to get outside!
Benefit #1: No experts required! People of all ages and abilities can enjoy the benefits of taking a walk outside. Walking is a simple enough activity where people of all fitness levels can participate. Whereas other exercises may seem more intimidating to those who are older, or have other health issues, walking is an activity everyone can begin with, and still includes many benefits, from strengthening your joints, muscles, and bones.
Benefit #2: Maintaining a healthy weight. It may come as no surprise that walking can help keep the scale from rising. According to the Prevention magazine article, “15 Major Benefits of Walking According to Experts,” walking starts by increasing your caloric burn. Regular walking can “help reduce fat and, as a result, improve your body’s response to insulin, according to research” by experts. If wanting to truly burn more calories, it is vital to include intervals, where you are speeding up your walk, as well as walking up and down hills. “Increasing your speed for small bouts of time during, say, a 30-minute walk allows you to
burn more calories than if you strolled at a moderate pace for half an hour.”
Benefit #3: Reduces the risk of breast cancer. According to the Harvard Health Publishing article, “5 Surprising Benefits of Walking,” one of the most interesting benefits is that this can directly help women develop breast cancer. An American Cancer Society study that zeroed in on walking, “found that women who walked seven or more hours a week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three hours or fewer per week,” the article states. “And walking provided this protection even for the women with breast cancer risk factors, such as being overweight or using supplemental hormones.”
Benefit #4: Reducing joint pain. Numerous studies have found walking to help lower the pain associated with arthritis. According to the Havard article, “Walking protects the joints—especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them.” By walking up to five to six miles a week, walkers can avoid forming arthritis in the first place, the article states.
Benefit #5: Can improve mood. Research shows that only ten minutes of walking outdoors can raise your spirits. According to the Prevention article, “regular walking actually modifies your nervous system so much that you’ll experience a decrease in anger and hostility.” Dr. Melina B. Jampolis informs all that walking outdoors “can be particularly helpful during the colder months, when seasonal depression spikes.”
Benefit #6: Strengthening social skills. When you make your walks social, and enjoy walking with a neighbor, friend, coworker, or family member, you feel connected, which in turn can raise your spirits. By socializing outdoors, you can catch up on whatever is going on within your life, as well as the life of your walking partner, helping both feel valued.
Benefit #7: Helping improve heart health. One of the best ways to strengthen your heart is by lowering your blood pressure. Research shows that for every 1,000 steps you take, “you could lower your systolic blood pressure by .45 points,” the Prevention article states. For older adults, “every 500 additional steps taken daily was associated with 14% lower risk of heart disease, stroke or heart failure.”
Benefit #8: Sleep with come easier. One of the best benefits of walking outdoors is that it coincides later with helping your body calm down for a good night’s rest. Physical activity boosts melatonin, which will help the body snooze better at night. Research shows that those who are more sedentary do often experience tougher times falling asleep at night, than those who are exercising.
The Turtle’s Shell Local Love Meets
One-of-a-Kind Gifts
By MARTIE EMORY
When Mary Harrington and her husband, Doug, were looking for something fun to dive into that would engage with the community and also make good business sense, Mary’s love of home design and décor took center stage. The Turtle’s Shell opened last August in Sherrills Ford and has become – just as Mary hoped – the absolute “go to” spot for locals to gather and, of course, shop!
“We’ve been blessed by the reception of folks visiting us around Lake Norman and feel confident that by getting to know our customers and listening to their ideas, we can make The Turtle’s Shell a fun place where people stay awhile, but also find that ‘special something,’ no matter what the occasion!” Mary shares, adding they didn’t create The Turtle’s Shell to necessarily compete with other boutiques, but moreso, to fill a gap in the Sherrills Ford area. “We’ll continue to grow and adapt to provide the unique inventory folks in the area need and want.”
The boutique was a logical step, as Mary says friends have recognized her love for unique gifts and design through the years and often asked for her help in decorating which partly inspired the business.
“I have always been the one who was somewhat obsessed about having a nice home with unique and fun items around,” she shares. “It’s not necessarily a great painting or a piece of antique furniture that completes a room. Sometimes it’s that little glass bird on the side table or that cool, unique picture frame – it’s the little things.”
The creative process for Mary and Doug began with art, specifically acrylic pouring on home items – canvases, wine glasses, charcuterie boards and ornaments, and they became part of the Denver Farmers Market on Saturdays. Since the family lives “between” Sherrills Ford and Denver, they recognized a niche in Sherrills Ford for a smart, fun home and gift shop. Always with an eye on community, they designed a business plan that also includes women’s apparel and an infant and toddler section, so gift options are plentiful.
Owner, Mary Harrington
“My grandmother owned a children’s boutique in Winston-Salem in the late 70s and early 80s, and two of my aunts owned a home décor store in Reynolda Village,” shares Mary. “No wonder this is a true family affair!”
Another tradition carried on from their time showing at the Farmers Market, The Turtle’s Shell also loves giving local artists a place to show their creations.
“At least four of our former Farmers Market friends have items in our store – all handmade,
including EB Designs in Wood (hand-crafted cutting boards), EDONN Designs (handmade candles, wax melts, lotions and sprays), Victoria Soaps, Simply American Dog Treat Company, Angie’s Door Décor (wreaths) and Tom Ogburn Sculptures,” Mary shares.
With endless shopping options surrounding the Lake Norman area, what sets The Turtle’s Shell apart? Here’s Mary’s view!
“We live right here with our customers! This is a very diverse area, and we want to provide affordable products for everyone but also showcase ‘one-of-a-kind’ items for folks looking for something out of the ordinary.
We have fun, and we want the store to be a popular place to ‘hang-out’ and browse through a well stocked inventory. It’s fun to see a customer looking and looking…and looking, and then you realize they’re trying to find that ‘one thing’ for someone special. Having conversations with customers, learning about their friends and helping them find gifts they feel will give them a smile or lift their spirits…that’s the fun part!”
The Turtle’s Shell carries popular MUDPIE items, including women’s and children’s apparel, along with UMGEE. Mary also spends time looking for unknown brands that might be new to customers.
“I really look at the quality and uniqueness of things to add to the store,” she says. “We want it to be fresh, almost weekly, for folks coming back to shop regularly.”
Daughters Lindsay and Madison, both 20-somethings, love to add their opinions on what’s trending and what fashion lines would sell well. Lindsay also helps Mary and Doug with marketing – carrying on that family connection.

Beating the Winter Blues in Lake Norman A Humorous Guide to Surviving the Chill
By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER
Winter in the Lake Norman area is a bit like the awkward cousin at a family reunion – not exactly what you were hoping for, but it’s here, and you have to make the best of it. Sure, the summer months offer an abundance of sunshine and opportunities for outdoor fun, but when the temperature dips and the lake freezes (well, sort of), you might start wondering if it’s time to move to a beach in the Bahamas. But, fear not! Here’s a humorous guide on how to beat the winter blues in Lake Norman without booking a one-way flight somewhere tropical.
Embrace the Off-Season Charm
Lake Norman might be the “Carolina Riviera” in summer, but in winter, it transforms into a serene, quiet haven. No crowds, no traffic (except for the rare person who forgot they were supposed to stay in their winter hibernation) and plenty of space to stretch your legs. Instead of lamenting the lack of boat traffic, why not grab a pair of ice skates (even if there’s no real ice) or your winter boots and enjoy the stillness of the lake from the shore?
Soups, Soups and More Soups
Let’s be honest, winter is really just an excuse to eat more comfort food. And, nothing beats the winter blues quite like a steaming bowl of soup. Head to a local Lake Norman favorite like The Blu Star Grill for a warm, hearty bowl of their signature shrimp bisque or soup of the day. Or, for those who prefer staying cozy at home, spend an afternoon in the kitchen perfecting that “from scratch” soup recipe. Luckily, our “Be Well Table” column has a healthier potato soup recipe on page 22, so be sure to follow her for more recipes. Bonus points if you make a mess in the process – nothing says “I’m embracing winter” like flourcoated countertops.
When you’re not shivering in your house and wondering why you didn’t invest in more blankets, why not dive into a good book? You could join one of the many book clubs at the local library or create your own virtual one with friends. The colder months are the perfect excuse to finally read War and Peace or The Twilight Saga, no judgment. Just make sure to tell everyone that you are “exploring classic literature” when you log onto Zoom.
Winter Wine Tasting: For the Vino Enthusiast
Wine is an obvious go-to for staying warm and content, and luckily, the Lake Norman area has several excellent vineyards offering winter wine tastings. A short drive away, the lovely Dynamis Estate Wines is a perfect way to spend an afternoon sipping on a rich red or a crisp white while marveling at the winter landscape.
Grab a blanket and your comfiest pajamas, and settle in for a movie marathon. Whether it’s cheesy rom-coms or feel-good classics, winter is the perfect time to indulge in a cinematic binge. Of course, no movie marathon is complete without a mug of hot cocoa and maybe a slice (or 10) of banana bread. Need some suggestions? Little Miss Sunshine, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and The Sound of Music are a few picks to brighten your winter spirit – or at least enough comfort to make you forget about that cold wind.
Spring Is Just Around the Corner…
When all else fails, remember that winter doesn’t last forever. We are mere months away from sunny spring days, outdoor concerts and barbecues by the lake. So, when you’re feeling down and out, just remember – Lake Norman’s sunny days are patiently waiting. Until then, keep your spirits high with the knowledge that, even if you’re wearing five layers of clothing, you’re still living the dream.
Winter in Lake Norman doesn’t have to be an endless cycle of gray skies and shivering indoors. With a little creativity, a lot of comfort food and a sense of humor, you can survive – and even thrive – during the chillier months. After all, the best way to beat the winter blues is knowing how to turn the cold into an opportunity for cozy adventures, fun activities and maybe even discovering a new winter hobby. So go ahead, embrace the winter weirdness and remember – spring will be here before you know it.

A Break Up Letter, With Love, to New Year’s Resolutions
By TARYN JEREZ
Dear New Year’s
Resolutions,
There is something I’ve got to get off my chest.
From elementary school essays and college dorm vision boards to Facebook posts and journal entries into adolescence and adulthood you’ve been there… reminding me of the year ahead, the person I want to become each January. You’ve played such an important role in my life for so many years, that it pains me to tell you that… I think it’s finally over between us.
• It’s not you, it’s me. You see, that person I want to become each January? The one you remind me about every year? I’m already her. Sure, I may not be the best version of her every single day, but I show up and I do my damndest. Of course, I know you do, too. I’m not saying you’re at fault here, you’re just doing your job - reminding each of us to do better, to reach higher, to go farther this year. I mean, that’s great advice!
• I think I just need space right now. It’s been a difficult few years for the human race if I’m being honest, and while I love the idea of “reaching higher” I think a lot of us are just fine with reaching next to us or just slightly across from us right now. I don’t know if anyone’s ever told you this, but you can really put the pressure on. Maybe timing just isn’t your thing but the end of the year mid-holidays really is one hell of a time to throw the whole “new year, new me” mantra in our faces.
• I love you, but I’m just not in love with you. I’ve always loved dreaming up what the new year will hold and challenging myself to dig deeper into what I want the next 365 days to look like. I love you for the gentle reminders and the added accountability. Even the publicity you bring with you every December and January is really something to behold. There are whole industries obsessed with you, using you in their marketing ads to help coax people into buying their products or subscribing to their services just to keep up with whatever resolution they committed to. You’re impressive, I’ll give you that.
• We’re both looking for different things, really. This year, I’m reminding myself that January 1st isn’t special. There’s nothing scientific about starting a goal in January that says we’re any more likely to achieve it. In fact, it may be hard to hear this, but I think you make it more likely NOT to for some of us. I don’t need you to remind me that the turning of the calendar is my chance at a fresh start, because every day is a fresh start. So this year, I’m not looking to walk hand in hand when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, but I hope you’ll still cheer for me anyway.
• You’re going to make some lucky girl really happy someday…It’s just not meant to be me. I greeted the new year with my head held high about every little thing I accomplished (and didn’t) last year. Keep reminding people of what’s possible and be there when they need you. I’m keeping my eyes set toward the future each day and I’ve got my sunglasses ready because I know it’s going to be bright.
Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.

The PJs & the Parsnip
By JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
Ishould forgive myself. After all, it was two days before Thanksgiving. I had things on my mind. What to bring to the neighbors...who hadn’t I reached out to yet...and how would a particular, personal burden resolve...or would it? And so, I struggled at the self checkout with weighing the green beans and trying to find the code for the lone parsnip I just had to have to round out that night’s vegetable medley. It wasn’t going well. Glancing at the line forming behind me, I imagined each anonymous face and easily conjured their annoyance: Come ON, lady. It’s SELF CHECKOUT and you only have two items. Could you please get on with it?
Well, apparently, I couldn’t.
And it was at that precise moment that I noticed the woman at the head of that serpentine line. She didn’t seem in the least annoyed. It was more like she was just going with the flow. Because finding a barcode on a vegetable couldn’t hold a candle to noticing a fashion moment, I engaged:
Oh wow, did you get those PJs from Soma? I just bought the same ones, on sale!
Honestly, I don’t know, my grandma bought them for me last year when I was in the hospital.
The young employee responsible for getting the self checkout folks like me through the line politely interrupted:
Ma’am, the parsnip? It’s $1.25.
Oh yeah, that’s great. Thanks.
I gathered my beans and my parsnip, snatched my receipt, quickly thanked the employee and headed out.
It was only when I was cruising down the road towards home that those few moments flashed back to me. In the few minutes it took me to get there, I realized with a sunken heart that I could have made something different of the whole thing. I thought about that woman, much younger than me, in those familiar PJs. Her hair was very short, and she was wearing fluffy slippers or something equally comfortable. I had no idea what her hospitalization was about or what she might have been struggling with in the present. But, I do know that I wish I had had the presence of mind to be there with her – stranger to stranger – in the moment. I realized that it might have gone like this:
Oh wow, did you get those PJs from Soma? I just bought the same ones, on sale!
Honestly, I don’t know, my grandma bought them for me last year, when I was in the hospital.
Aww, how sweet. I hope things are going okay for you now.
Why is it that we seem to know the “right” or better things to say long after the moment has passed? It kills me, and it happens more than I like to admit.
Being there for people, in a caring way – whether we know them or not – matters to me. It matters to many of us. We don’t always have the “right” words, but our intentions are sincere and that’s what others pick up on. I realized, after the fact, that “being present” this year means paying as much or more attention to the people and emotions around me as it does to the problem or parsnip in front of me.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FIND A LOST DOG?
By CAROLYN S PETERSON
Speaking from personal experience, being able to reunite a lost dog and its owner is a rewarding feeling, but it’s not always an easy task. Sometimes, for various reasons, you may not be able to catch the dog and in this case taking a picture and posting it on social media with a description, can many times, lead to the owner actually seeing the post and contacting you. If you see a loose dog and feel you are prepared and are able to help, and it’s safe to do so, there are a few tips to help you find the owner as quickly as possible.
Since I am always on alert for any animal I may see that is lost or in distress, I have a few items that I keep in my car. I have treats, a water bowl, bottled water, a leash, in case I do need to get a lost dog out of a dangerous situation or just to safety inside my car. Remember, your safety is of the utmost importance in any rescue situation.
Safely Catch and Contain the Dog
Should you feel your safety isn’t in danger, there are a few steps to help you safely catch and contain the dog.
• At all times, approach the dog calmly and encourage them to come towards you. Try to read the situation and assess if the dog is injured, which would make it more aggressive simply because it is in pain. Dogs are less intimidated if you turn your body sideways and continue with slow movement.
• Offering a treat, pouring some water in the bowl, if you have one, may entice the dog to move closer. Don’t try and chase the dog, as this can scare them to run possibly toward an unsafe area like the road.
• One trick that can work in your favor is to open your car door and invite the dog to ‘go on a ride’ in an excited voice. Every dog that I have fortunately been able to save and rescue out of the road has always jumped into my car and seemed happy to be out of danger.
• If you can’t safely approach the dog or the dog is hurt and in pain, speak calmly to it and call your local animal control for assistance. If you have a leash and can slip it over the dog’s head, that can assure the dog doesn’t run away while you wait for help.
• Should the dog be transportable to a local animal clinic in your car, it’s a good idea to have the dog scanned for a microchip as a first step in locating the owner(s).
Collars and Microchips
In a perfect world, the dog would have a collar or be microchipped, hopefully both. With either one, reuniting the dog with its family happens quickly, unless the dog was dumped and abandoned.
• If the dog is wearing a rabies tag, the number listed is unique to the animal and to the veterinary clinic where they received the vaccination. You can call the vet and have them look up the owner information in their system. If there is no form of ID on the dog, the best bet for being reunited with the owner(s) is through the local animal shelter, as that is the first place an owner would look. Your local animal shelter has a website where the dog’s photo and the area where it was found can be uploaded.
Spread the Word
The more people know about the dog you have found, the better. Taking the old-fashioned route of making fliers with a picture of the dog and any contact info for yourself is a way to spread the word. Make sure to get owner identification confirmed before you let the dog leave with anyone. You can also keep some details to yourself, like if there is a scar on the dog’s foot, so only the actual owner would be able to tell you that information.
These steps can be valuable in helping a scared and lost dog, or cat, find its way home.
A Conversation with Mrs. Sharnetta Clark-Gordon Local Author of Sparks of Miracles
By CLAIR CROW
Not too long ago, I had the privilege of meeting with Sharnetta Clark-Gordon over a cup of coffee. It wasn’t long into our conversation before I realized ClarkGordon is a woman who wears many hats and does so beautifully. Aside from being a wife and a newly empty-nester, she is a business owner, voiceover artist at WHIP Radio, Mary Kay consultant, NC notary and, most recently, an author. Clark-Gordon is the author of the book Sparks of Miracles which is a collection of stories from various people who have experienced their own kind of miracle.
Clark-Gordon shared with me “I felt like I’ve always had a story,” but it wasn’t until the pandemic hit in 2020 when she began to dig deep and think about what she wants to share with the world through authoring a book. She described herself as a mouthpiece for the Lord and her gifting as her voice; whether it be writing, speaking or singing. Being a woman of faith and a believer that “we are magnets of miracles,” she felt led to write about times in her life when she experienced a miracle in hopes that folks who read it might be drawn closer to Jesus despite whatever pain they may be experiencing. She invited a handful of other people God placed in her life to share their miracle stories within the book as well, referring to them as co-authors. Her prompt for them was, “Give me a ‘but, God’ moment.” The stories the individuals shared within the book are personal, unique and touching.
Clark-Gordon describes Sparks of Miracles as an easy read, written as if the person sharing their story is talking directly to you. There are photos within the book as they apply to the stories shared, as well as reflection pages throughout to prompt readers to write
down what they learned and if they know someone who might benefit from reading that story. Since having the book published, ClarkGordon has been encouraged by friends to write a second book as they too have miracle stories they would like to contribute. She is not opposed to the idea, should the Lord make it clear to her to do so.
So, what is Clark-Gordon’s miracle story? I encourage you to read her book for more detail, but in short, she is an
overcomer. She is a woman of gratitude even in the hardest times. She is kind, devoted and resilient. One of the battles she has faced is one that is all too common, but even still, not often discussed openly – infertility. The Lord answered her prayer of becoming a mother many years ago, even if it looked differently than how she originally planned. Ultimately, she and her husband were blessed to adopt three beautiful children who are now grown and thriving. She shared, “He chose me to rear those children,” and she is grateful. I wondered out loud if perhaps she and her husband are her children’s “miracle.” She smiled, hoping that maybe they’d see it that way too.
At one point during our conversation, ClarkGordon shared that she nearly backed out of sharing her story with me saying, “Who wants to hear my story and what I have to say?” Thankfully, a friend encouraged her to meet with me instead of giving in to doubt. I’m so thankful she sat with me that morning and shared her story. I left feeling inspired.
If you too would like some inspiration and want to support a Mooresville local author, you can pick up Sparks of Miracles at Fred and June’s Books in downtown Mooresville or purchase on Amazon. ClarkGordon hopes her book will encourage, uplift and be a tool to provide hope to those who feel lost. She especially would love to see her book be a blessing to those in nursing homes, prisons and shelters.
The Perfect Dress Celebrating as Prom Season Begins!
By MARTIE EMORY
What could otherwise be a drab, boring month, January seems to come alive with promise once girls begin envisioning prom night – and the dream dress that will mark their high school milestone event!
At The Perfect Dress in Mooresville, Owner Dina Haugstatter has a personal mission to make sure that shopping for your prom gown is the enjoyable experience it’s meant to be, offering personal attention to every girl who trusts her boutique with this important moment! When she and her daughter, Brooke, opened The Perfect Dress in 2021, their own stressful shopping memories were fresh on their mind – along with a vision of offering their clients in the Lake Norman area an entirely different experience.
“We want every girl who shops with us to feel beautiful and comfortable, no matter their shape or dress size,” shares Dina.
This season, there’s something new, as The Perfect Dress is especially thrilled to offer their own exclusive new line of prom dresses, and Dina can’t wait to greet you with some amazing new options!
“We wanted to take a few of our bestselling designs and make some modifications to improve the overall look,” says Dina. “By creating our own line, we are able to help keep the costs down for our customers, while giving them something that no other store anywhere will have.”
Her first – and most important – words of wisdom: shop early, for two major reasons! You’ll get the best selection to choose from, plus you can have “first dibs” on the dress you love for your individual high school. The boutique maintains a record of all dresses bought during prom season and will only sell that one style once per school, so no two girls have the same dress.
(Note: They may sell the same dress in a different color, but never two of the same shade.)
From what Dina has been fortunate to see so far, the 2025 prom season will be one to remember!
“For the trendiest styles on prom night, you can expect to see a dazzling array that combines elegance with a modern flair,” she shares. “You’ll notice metallic and pleated fabrics, intricate beadwork on fitted bodices, statement-making corset tops, floral patterns, backless designs and, of course, strapless designs. Satin continues to be one of the biggest hits for prom season as it drapes perfectly against the body curves, making your every move even more graceful.”
For spring and summer weddings already on the calendar, The Perfect Dress also delights in dressing mothers of both the bride and groom in gorgeous gowns. This year’s trends for mothers appear to be blending timeless elegance with modern flair. That means bold colors, intricate necklines and both shimmering and metallic fabrics, but the biggest trend for moms seems to be pretty florals!
“We suggest our mothers give themselves six months lead time to order their dress,” says Dina. “This allows for more options to be available, and most dresses can be specialordered to a particular size and color. The key is having enough time for expert alterations.”
Dina also suggests that if you want to combine elegance and playfulness with a touch of vintage charm, opt for a bow-style gown. And, as always, ruffles will continue to create a fun, flirty and playful look.
Be sure to add Saturday, January 11th and Sunday, January 12th to your calendar when The Perfect Dress will host their Prom 2025 Kick-Off & 5th Year Anniversary celebration!
“The first 50 girls to purchase will get to spin our prize wheel for a chance to win several different prizes,” says Dina. “There will be refreshments as well as models showcasing all the new styles!”
There’s much to look forward to as prom season will arrive in a flash with plenty of reasons to celebrate in stunning style!
The Perfect Dress is located in the historic Merino Mill, at 500 S. Main Street, Suite #116, in Mooresville, 704.978.9928, or visit them online at theperfectdressnc.com, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @theperfectdressnc. Dark Water Creatives The Power of Visual Content
By MARTIE EMORY
Always inspired by the world around him, Spencer Douglas loves the way people respond to his company’s unique name – Dark Water Creatives. The name was inspired by the idea of mystery surrounding dark waters. There are secrets waiting for their reveal – just as every brand has a unique story to tell – Spencer has a mission to bring those stories to life!
“My business has evolved significantly over the years. I started with portraits and event photography before transitioning into the commercial world,” Spencer explains. “During that phase, I had the opportunity to work on projects with nationally recognized brands like HomeGoods, NCAA, Hairitage by Mindy, and C4 Energy, among others. It was also during this time that I introduced video into my services.”
But, Spencer was discovering that his true passion was elsewhere.
“The more opportunities I had to collaborate with local businesses, the more I found that’s where my heart was. Working with large corporations was exciting – seeing your work out in the world is always rewarding – but it often lacked a personal connection. You rarely see the measurable impact of your work on the business itself.”
He discovered that working within the community and with locally owned businesses was much more fulfilling.
“The work I create for these businesses can have a profound impact on their growth and success. High quality, consistent visuals can truly be a game-changer – it elevates their appearance, helps them stand out and connects them with their audience.”
In 2021, Spencer rebranded and officially launched his business – a one-stop shop for visual content. Dark Water Creatives offers a full range of photo and video content services, from large-scale video productions and brand photography to social media content.
Continued from page 56.
There are two elements Spencer feels sets the business apart – using a strategic and tailored approach and comprehensive video and photography services.
“I don’t just create pretty visuals,” he explains. “Dark Water Creatives is strategically driven, blending our marketing expertise with a deep understanding of your business to create content that aligns with your goals. I start every project with a discovery phase to understand your needs, objectives and audience, tailoring our work to maximize its impact.”
Spencer knows that cookie-cutter content doesn’t work.
“Before I pick up a camera, I spend time learning about each client – who they are, what they stand for and what makes them unique.”
And, unlike many other companies, Dark Water Creatives offers both videography and photography under one roof. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or a nationally recognized brand, they provide cohesive, high-quality content without the need to hire multiple companies or juggle separate projects.
For the creative Spencer, one of his favorite parts of the business is the very beginning of a project – when he sits down with a client to discuss their vision and how Dark Water Creatives can help.
about creating videos or taking photos, but it’s also about capturing the passion and excitement of the people behind the scenes. We have so many incredible businesses in this area, and I’m constantly inspired by their creativity, dedication and uniqueness. It’s a privilege to be part of their journey and to help them connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.”
Spencer also loves teaching new clients why authentic visual content matters.
“In a world where consumers are constantly inundated with similar products and services, decision-making often boils down to perception and gut feeling. Most customers rely on visual cues to make choices. A strong visual presence isn’t just nice to have – it’s what sets businesses apart and helps them thrive.”
For businesses seeking fresh, engaging content on a consistent basis, Dark Water Creatives has a Content Club with monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly sessions. This is especially important for businesses looking to stand out on social media.
“There’s something so energizing about those initial conversations where we get to plan, strategize and bring their ideas to life. It’s not simply
“At Dark Water Creatives, we hear this sentiment all the time from our clients’ customers: “I just wish I knew about this place sooner.” It’s a universal feeling – wishing we knew what something truly was before ever engaging with it,” Spencer explains. “Brand photography and video are relatively small investments that yield enormous returns.“

The Mystery of Waiting HOW GOD WORKS WHILE WE WAIT
By DEBBIE BARR
Waiting is hard. No one likes to wait. When we are stuck in traffic, standing in a long line at the grocery store or watching the seconds tick by when our phone call is placed on hold, waiting feels like a huge waste of our time. But, as much as we dislike waiting, we all understand that waiting is just a part of life. And that is by design – God is not in a hurry.
God has woven a time of waiting into nearly every aspect of the natural world. A garden is one example. After you plant seeds in the ground, no matter how excited you are to see the rewards of your work, you won’t be harvesting anything the next day or even in the next few weeks. You wait and wait and wait... and on the surface, it looks like your garden is a failure. Nothing is happening. But, something actually is happening! Below the ground, where you cannot see it, nature is unfolding just the way it is supposed to. The seed coats are splitting open; moisture is causing the seeds to germinate; and they are beginning to
grow. And, one day, green shoots pop through the ground, and you realize that the time you spent waiting wasn’t wasted; it was necessary.
That’s how waiting works in our lives, too. Whenever we are waiting, God is working in ways we cannot see.
Waiting is a mystery to us; we wonder, why does God, who loves us dearly – and could instantly answer our every prayer – so often instead make us wait? In this faith-based mini-book, I shared six reasons why God may sometimes make us wait for his answers; but before I delved into those reasons, I felt compelled to first say that though waiting can be frustrating, disappointing and irritating, God is never playing with our lives. Lamentations 3:33 assures us that God “takes no pleasure in…throwing roadblocks in the way” (The Message). In other words, when God makes us wait for his answer, we can be certain that because of his strong love for us, there is a wise purpose for the wait. Our faith challenge is to trust that God is, in fact, delaying in order to ultimately do what’s best for us. That’s the hard part!
Because God’s timing is always perfect, never too early and never too late, he wants us to allow his perfect timing to guide our lives. Yet, when he wisely pushes the pause button to pace us so that things happen for us at the right time, we so often misunderstand, resist and forge ahead. It’s hard for us to accept that anything that slows us down could actually be positioning us to receive a blessing, right on time.
Isaiah 64:4 plainly tells us that God “...works for those who wait for him.”
That’s why when waiting is all you can do, it’s the best thing you can do. Waiting on God is never a waste of time. The key message of The Mystery of Waiting is simply this – if we are waiting, God is still working and always for our good.

One Man’s Perspective WELCOME TO SAC
By CHARLIE SCHULER
SAC stands for Strategic Air Command. This is where I was assigned after the war was over. The Korean War ended July 27th, 1953. I was transferred from flying as a gunner on B-29’s to becoming a refueling operator on KC-97’s. Our primary job was to refuel B-47 bombers. They were physically about the same size as our KC-97 with four jet engines and swept back wings. They were flown by three people and the refueling port was on the B-47 just in front of the pilot. He had a great view of the refueling operation.
We were assigned to open up Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln, Nebraska. Eventually we had about 20 tankers and I was assigned to the standardization crew. We had to check all the other crews twice a year. I checked out the boom operators and this included questions that I had come up with plus a little troubleshooting, like adding a problem affecting their hydraulic system so that the boom would not extend and retract. We also checked them out on an actual refueling mission. I enjoyed the job. There was a lot of flying and most of the time we’d spend about 10 hours in the air a couple of days a week.
We did have one incident that I recall. We were checking this crew, and the engines were at full throttle getting ready for takeoff. The pilot released the brakes and as we roared down the runway all four engines started blowing up and flames were everywhere. The
pilot pulled back on the throttle and we all got out quickly. The fire trucks were there in a hurry and got the situation under control. We were all okay, just shook up. After a thorough investigation it was determined that someone had put water in the alcohol tanks. Alcohol is squirted into the cylinders to add power to the engines during takeoff. Water doesn’t compress, thus the reason why the cylinders were exploding and causing fire.
Being in SAC meant that you had to have about 1/3 of your planes in the air at any one time in case of attack. It also meant that you spent three months out of the year someplace else. Particularly out of the country. I remember our first trip was to load up the aircraft with all kinds of physical equipment, and troops and we would fly them to Goose Bay, Labrador.
Goose Bay temperature was 40° below zero when we arrived, that’s cold, probably the coldest I’ve ever been. We had to put heaters on all four engines so that you could start them up again when we were ready to fly. If you spit, the spit would freeze before it reaches the ground.
They issued us parkas with fur around the hood, heavy gloves, and heavy pants. The fur was to protect our face.
The cabins were not much to look at, but they had a potbelly stove which we kept burning continually.
One of the missions that I remember was when all our planes were in the air, refueling B-47’s over the North Pole. As we reached the refueling point, I noticed that the Northern Lights were so bright and brilliant, if you looked up from your instruments it would look like you were crashing into the ground. It was difficult for all to make and keep the connection. There were many breakaways. A breakaway is vwhere you make a disconnection. The pilot of the B-47 releases the clamps, and you retract and fly the boom up and out of the way. After many tries, we did get all our fuel transferred to the B-47. It was quite a job, and we used a lot of fuel.
They had decided that we would have to land at Reykjavik, Iceland. This would be an emergency landing since Reykjavik was in the middle of a blizzard, but we landed anyway. As we landed it was obvious that some of the guys didn’t make out well. The planes were sliding off the runways and on to the snow. After we slowed down the pilot asked for the refueling operators to go outside and wing walk, so we didn’t hit anything, because they couldn’t see the end of the wings. We did and believe me it was cold.
After we made it off the landing strip and on to the parking area we unloaded and headed towards the barracks. Got warm, or warmer, then they took us to the cafeteria so that we could eat. I felt like I was in heaven. All the women serving were blonde haired and beautiful. I decided I loved Iceland.
ASK DR. KEITH
By KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
Dear Dr. Keith,
I’m a 30-year-old man who recently got married to a wonderful woman who’s helped me straighten out my life. When we met, I was in a dark place and alcohol was my escape. I was a functioning alcoholic with a successful contracting business, however undeserving I felt.
Despite my efforts to sabotage myself, the business and my life, I’ve been fortunate to maintain good business relationships due to the quality of my work, which was becoming more difficult because of my drinking. I started showing up late, missing deadlines and becoming unreliable. Drinking became my coping mechanism to escape the negativity, physical and mental abuse of my parents. Growing up, home was a living hell for me. I was ridiculed, criticized and constantly told what a loser I was and that I’d never amount to anything.
Fortunately, my friend’s father took me under his wing and hired me to work with him remodeling homes. He became my mentor, helped me find my passion and start my own company, much to the dismay of my parents. They wanted me to go to college, saying no child of theirs should do manual labor. The hypocrisy is disheartening to me. Neither one of my parents attended college and couldn’t afford to help me if I chose to go. Thanks to my wife, I’m sober now and my business and life are good, however, the feelings of selfdoubt, unworthiness and worthlessness from the programming of my parents still linger.
Here’s my issue. My wife’s family invited us to celebrate Thanksgiving with them, and we’ve accepted the invitation. My parents have offered to pay for my ticket to fly out to their house and spend Thanksgiving with them, excluding my wife. My warped sense of obligation, as an only child, has left me feeling guilty and confused. I want to be with my wife during the holidays and declined their offer. Now, they’re angry and refusing to answer my phone calls.
Did I do the right thing? Could I have done things differently?
~ Stuart K., Charlotte
Hey Stuart,
Congratulations on becoming sober, and always remember the only drink you have to quit is the next one. We can always do things differently; that doesn’t mean it’s better. When there’s change in family dynamics, such as a marriage, death of a loved one or disagreement on how a situation should be handled, drama tends to follow. It’s your choice of whether or not you allow it to affect you and your choices. Holidays are occasions that need to be negotiated between you and your wife. It’s good to consider family traditions, however, it’s okay to start your own traditions. You are a grown man, and your only obligation is to yourself and your family. Your wife is your atomic family and needs to be your priority. Wanting to be with her during the holidays is the right decision, regardless of what your parents think or want. Offering to buy you a ticket and suggesting you leave your wife at home is just another form of control and manipulation. This can only happen if you allow it. By saying “no” to their request, you set a healthy boundary which is a great first step. It’s not only important to continue to set healthy boundaries with your parents, and others like them; it’s also vital for you to move beyond their negative programming, maintain your sobriety, develop a healthy relationship with yourself and build a strong bond with your wife. I’ve said it before, college is not for everyone. You’ve been fortunate to find something you’re passionate about that can
support your lifestyle, and that’s a blessing. Many people graduate from college without direction or passion and end up in a job that they dislike. This negatively affects all aspects of their lives. You’ve avoided making that mistake. Be grateful and proud of what you’ve accomplished, and allow yourself to enjoy what you are creating. We were not put in this world to meet the expectations of others. It sounds like your parents had unrealistic expectations of you which is their issue, not yours. They’re possibly not capable of appreciating you and your talents because their lives haven’t turned out the way they expected, projecting their resentment and bitterness on you. They can’t be happy for you because they’re not happy with themselves. Saying “no” to your parents was the right thing to do. Moving forward, minimizing your time with them will allow you to focus on the important things, your sobriety, marriage and life.

NOURISHING ONE-POT COOKING
By SUSAN BOYOUNG BAILEY SCHABACKER
With the start of the new year and the chill of winter, it’s time to stay cozy with comfort food. Savory, warming, one-pot dishes are ideal streamlined meals to simmer and enjoy. Combine your favorite fresh and dried ingredients. Add in antioxidant and polyphenol rich teas and make the most of spices and herbs; and there’s nothing as comforting as curling up with a warm, hearty meal that nourishes the body and soul.
Start by exploring the world of one-pot wonders, dishes that come together seamlessly in a single vessel, infusing deep, robust flavors. Favorite soul-satisfying stews are the perfect antidote to the blustery weather outside. Hot, comforting, one-pot meals are the perfect solution for busy weeknights when you’re craving something hearty but can’t spend hours slaving in the kitchen. Easy-to-prepare dishes combine a variety of fresh, wholesome ingredients cooked together in a single pot or Dutch oven, resulting in deep, complex flavors and minimal cleanup.
As an added benefit, one-pot wonders are not only simple to prepare, but also make excellent leftovers, so you can enjoy delicious, wholesome meals throughout the week with minimal effort.
Experiment with a variety of spices that elevate the taste of your dishes and offer a wealth of health benefits. For a rich, earthy flavor, try stirring in a blend of ground cumin, smoked paprika and chili powder to chili or stew. The cumin lends intoxicating earthiness, the paprika imparts a subtle smokiness and the chili powder provides a gentle heat that gradually builds.
Fragrant herbs like rosemary, thyme and bay leaves make wonderful additions, infusing the dish with an herbal complexity that complements the spices beautifully.
And, here’s a nourishing tip for a tea-infused twist. Brew a pot of chamomile or ginger tea and substitute this as the liquid in your soups and stews. Tea lends a soothing, slightly sweet note that balances the heartiness of the meal.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to layering spices, herbs and teas into cozy
comfort foods, allowing you to curate unique flavor profiles that will warm both the body and the soul on a chilly day.
One favorite delicious and nutritious onepot meal is a savory beef and vegetable stew, brimming with tender chunks of beef, earthy root vegetables and a rich, aromatic broth. Simmered to perfection in flavorful broth, the tender chunks of beef pair beautifully with an assortment of vibrant veggies like carrots, potatoes, onions and peas, creating a well-rounded and nutrient-dense meal.
Or, for a vegetarian option, try a vibrant, veggie-packed curry made with creamy coconut milk, fragrant spices and an assortment of nutrient-dense produce such as spinach, chickpeas and sweet potatoes. Or, consider a butternut squash and quinoa chili, featuring the natural sweetness of roasted squash, the protein-packed goodness of quinoa and a blend of warming spices that give it a delightful kick.
And, for a cozy, comforting dish on a chilly evening, you can’t go wrong with a hearty chicken and wild rice soup where chicken breasts, wild rice and fresh herbs and spices meld together in a creamy, velvety base. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started, but add herbs and spices to taste.
ONE-POT CHICKEN AND WILD RICE
Ingredients:
• 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
• 1 cup wild rice
• 4 cups chicken broth
• 1 onion, chopped
• 2 carrots, chopped
• 2 celery stalks, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
1. Brown the chicken in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add a little oil and brown the chicken on both sides. Remove and set aside.
2. Add onion, carrots, celery and garlic, and sauté until softened.
3. Return chicken to the pot. Add the wild rice, chicken broth, thyme, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.
4. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
No matter which meal you choose to make, easy one-pot wonders allow you to enjoy a delicious, well-balanced meal with minimal time and effort, making them the perfect solution for busy home cooks looking for a nourishing, hassle-free dinner.
Trackside Talks FEATURING LOWLINE LIVERY DESIGN
By CLAIR CROW
One thing longtime NASCAR fans and new fans alike have in common, if I were to guess, is that they notice the paint scheme of the cars. The wrap on each racecar is important for a number of reasons. It displays the driver number and team partners. It draws attention to the car first, driver second. Some are busier with lots of texture, others have a cleaner look and others have a retro feel to them. A cool car scheme may not actually make you go faster, but it can make you “look fast doin’ it” according to Dillon Crow, owner of Lowline Livery Design.
It was in February of 2020 when Lowline Livery Design was born. Crow, a graphic designer by trade, was looking for a way to merge both work and play, “a way to put design in motion.” A lifelong motorsports fan, Crow spent countless hours of his childhood sketching race cars and designing paint schemes in NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, a PC game whose paint booth Crow said, “occupied more of my time than laps on track.” Out of his natural talent, formal schooling and interest in motorsports came a small business venture that soon would open his world and change the trajectory of his life.
In the early beginnings of Lowline Livery Design, Crow was creating like crazy and showcasing his work on his social media, which led to making connections all over the map with others in the motorsports world. One of those new connections and now longtime friend was Joe Crowdes, fellow motorsports enthusiast and graphic designer. Still in the infancy of Lowline, Crowdes had heard a local Mooresville motorsport merchandising outfit was in search of a new designer, and he threw Crow’s hat in the ring. Crow says, “This is the part where I’m eternally grateful to Jason Bowles, founder of Swell Ink. He took a chance from 1,600 miles away, leading my family and I to Race City in October 2021 after working remotely from Denver, Colorado for 10 months.”
Continued on page 70.
Continued from page 68.
Crow has been consistently and tastefully building his business for the last five years, staying true to his brand while continuing to grow in skill and knowledge, cultivating personal and professional relationships within the motorsports community along the way. He has had the opportunity to create several paint schemes among other projects, but one of Crow’s most recent projects moved to the top of his favorites list. Good friend and owner of Alpha Vision Media, Shawn Brennan, contacted Crow to create a livery design for an Alpha Vision Media NASCAR truck that would race in Martinsville, VA in October of 2024. Brennan’s only direction to Crow was
to “make something cool.” Crow said, “I was allowed creative freedom to explore the brand’s flexibility and design something truly special for them.” Needless to say, I think all involved had a great weekend showing off their brand, skills and talents.
When Crow began Lowline Livery Design, it was one day at a time and see what comes. When asked what has come out of this business venture for him so far and if there have been any surprises, he answered “This venture deepens my childlike enthusiasm for racing. There’s nothing cooler than seeing your artwork at 190mph. As far as surprises go, I believe we have a big one in store for 2025.”
What started out as a childhood dream, Lowline Livery Design made a reality. Crow shares, “Blending your passion with your God-given talents sure can produce some satisfying results. You may even make your former self proud.” Not everyone has the ability to do what Crow has done. He took a chance on himself, and turns out, that was the right decision. As far as where Crow hopes Lowline will be five years from now, he says, “Hard to believe this venture will be 10 years old by then. I just hope to keep seeing my artwork at speed, regardless of the series.”
Of course I had to ask Crow who his biggest support has been along the way because we all know how important it is to have folks around you who believe in you and encourage you, right? Crow said, “My wife has been the driving force who pushes me forward in this venture. She encourages me to keep my head down and dig deep, in search of the next opportunity.” If you haven’t figured it out by now, it’s me. I’m the wife.
The absolute truth is, I’m inspired by my husband and his drive to pursue his dreams! He is ultra talented, a friend to many, hard-working, humble and not to mention, the best husband and dad to his one-year-old son. Fuller and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Lowline Livery Design! Check out his work on his Instagram @lowlineliverydesign or check out his website for more information: lowlinelivery.com.
Joyful Journey SUPPORTING NC HIGH COUNTRY RECOVERY
WHILE ENJOYING FAMILY FUN
By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER
When chronic joint pain puts a damper on your beloved daily activities – and casts a shadow on quality time with family and friends –the quest for even temporary relief can be a challenge.
After the devastating impacts of a hurricane like Helene, it’s essential to focus on recovery efforts and bring back tourism in a way that highlights the resilience and charm of the North Carolina High Country. Just a short drive from the Lake Norman area, a trip to the High Country will help build back revenue lost during peak leaf season. January offers many opportunities to help rejuvenate the local economy and attract visitors to the region through a variety of winter activities and events. Here’s a brief list of activities and events for January across the High Country towns, including ways to support tourism recovery after the storm. By promoting these January activities and events, the North Carolina High Country can not only bring back tourism post-Hurricane Helene, but can also ensure that the recovery is vibrant, diverse and community focused. Whether through outdoor adventure, cultural experiences or cozy getaways, the region offers something for every type of traveler.
East Lincoln Christian Ministry Carrying on a Mission of Love
By MARTIE EMORY
As shared by their current president, Laura Moore, “I believe God has placed us here for such a time as this.”
With humble beginnings in 1983 from a $500 donation by an anonymous benefactor, East Lincoln Christian Ministry was originally called Christian Cooperative Ministry of East Lincoln County, with a membership that included many area churches. In order to better serve the community, pooling resources and expanding their reach became the next goal, and Lincoln County offered the group the use of the property on Highway 16 adjacent to Triangle Elementary School – now Holy Spirit Church. A single-wide trailer was acquired, and the organization began collecting food and clothing for distribution. The early founders of this ministry had no idea how extensive their reach would one day become, and the countless lives they would change!
The ministry moved to a larger building on Pine Ridge Road in Denver, but due to rapid growth and widespread excitement for the mission, it moved to its current location on Catawba Burris Road in Denver across from the Rock Springs Campground.
After those years of amazing growth, their original mission still rings true: “To be a shared ministry of Christian men and women who are compassionate, caring and unselfish, and who share love with all who are in need.”
The Catawba Burris Road location now houses the administrative office and Crisis Ministry (providing for the needs of individuals on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.), the Food Pantry (serving Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.), Home Meals Ministry, and the Sales Department (offering good used clothing at very reasonable prices open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Please note, donations of good, usable items are accepted during those times only.)
Crisis Ministry provides assistance to all those in need, while treating them with dignity and love, and ELCM offers assistance according to set guidelines with needs reviewed on a regular basis. The Home Meals Ministry provides a warm, well balanced meal five days a week (excluding holidays) to individuals in the East Lincoln area who are homebound due to illness, disability, injury or advanced age. Physicians, home health services, family members, concerned neighbors and friends may make referrals at the hotline number, 704.483.9238. The Home Meals Ministry receives no federal funds, so recipients pay for the meals according to their ability to pay.
The Furniture Annex on Cedar Street in Denver (704.966.0498) offers furniture, home accessories, luggage, appliances (small and large), camping gear and sports equipment, all at reasonable prices. The Annex is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon and gladly accepts donations at that time.
The VITA Program (the white house with the red roof on Campground Road) provides IRS Certified Volunteers who can offer free tax assistance to individuals from late January through mid-April. Anyone wishing to assist with scheduling appointments, intake or preparation is asked to contact Jim at jimtaxelcm@gmail.com or by phone at 704.966.1696.
ELCM Family Fashions on Highway 150 in Sherrills Ford, opened in November 2022 and offers a large selection of new clothing for the entire family, home accessories, bridal and formal apparel, unique gift items and a huge selection of jewelry, all at very reasonable prices. They are open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
East Lincoln Christian Ministry is fully staffed by volunteers, so all funds are used for operation of the ministry. Remember, while your purchase is bringing joy to you, know that it is also bringing joy to many others!
Laura also shares other ways to serve as a volunteer, including the group’s annual golf tournament – their only fundraiser. Joining the Golf Committee offers you the opportunity to share the missions of East Lincoln Christian Ministry with local businesses who may wish to become involved.
East Lincoln Christian Ministry, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors that meets quarterly to monitor the activities, programs and services provided by each area of the ministry. If you would like to become a part of this unique 501(c)(3) ministry, please visit their offices at 4278 Catawba Burris Road, Denver, NC, or call 704.483.4415 – Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
