MOTHER NURTURE –

INVESTING IN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THAT L AST A LIFETIME by I V E Y G A S K I N B A K E R

I have considered starting (and have started) multiple small businesses over the years. I had a health coaching business, I wrote a book that I nearly published, sold art on Etsy and published a podcast for a season. I’ve also drawn up business plans for a pork sandwich food truck, an auto repair business with a three-way give-back mission and that’s not everything. I have countless interests and not enough free time. Professionally, I’m a financial planner for a family owned business in Charlotte and my husband is a plastic surgeon in Charlotte and Huntersville. Both of our careers are highly technical and extremely regulated. They are not the kind of businesses where you can bring your kids to work. Oh, and we have three energetic, bright and curious sons (ages 8, 5 and 18 months).

I’m an 80s kid, and the last generation to grow up without social media until we were (almost) mature enough to handle it in college. Girls were mean, but it began at sleepovers and ended in the lunchroom. I played an instrument, one sport and worked a variety of jobs from age 12. I was always outside. I went to one of the best public schools in Charlotte where I took some academically hard classes mixed in with creative ones. I was a decent student and got into a great college without much fear of acceptance. College prepared me for a meaningful career in an industry where I feel a great sense of duty and purpose. My parents were involved in my life serving as a constant positive influence. I wasn’t anxious nor depressed, and life was not that stressful. This was the case for most of my classmates. Sadly, this is not the story of today’s typical teenager. Every generation seems to have their challenges. Without getting into all of the statistics and “issues” that occasionally get me down, it’s a tough time to raise kids. I think about my three sons constantly. Sure, I’m thinking about the current (rather simple) issues they face daily but, more than anything, I’m thinking about who they are as human beings and projecting that out to adulthood. I’m thinking about every small interaction they have with adults and children or in their physical pursuits and academic coursework and how that might mold who they become. Because I’m a financial planner, trying to educate 20-somethings about why retirement planning is important, it’s just how I think. In a two-career household, we have little hands-on time with our sons. Those few waking hours we spend together are crucial. It’s 2024 and I have a business that is actually happening, serving multiple purposes. It originates from a happy memory. In 2013, I was newly married to a medical student that had very little free time for me. I was raised by a green thumb mother and wanted to give gardening a try myself. So, I spent my summer in a 10 x 20-foot vegetable garden in a home we were renting. This garden both rewarded and humbled me. It required me to be accountable to something. It required research, patience and back-breaking hard work. My children are too young for a formal working arrangement outside the home, but they have endless energy and lessons to be learned. Thanks to LKN Magazine, I’m inviting you along for the ride with me throughout the course of this year. I’ll share actual business details, how I intentionally engage my children and, ultimately, how our garden performs, all with a best financial principals undertone. I hope you enjoy and, further, I hope you engage with us and share your garden experiences as I share mine. Let’s get digging.

A CONVERSATION WITH MOORESVILLE FORD’S JEFF SHOE I am with Jeff Shoe of Mooresville Ford. He grew up here where he attended Mooresville High School and played football for legendary Coach Perry Pearson. His dad started the Ford dealership in 1961, and Jeff took it over in 2000. I first met Jeff in 1989 when I was an assistant basketball coach for Bob McKillop at Davidson College. As a supporter of the athletic program, Jeff gave me a car to drive. It was a used Ford Taurus, white with crushed red velvet seats…and a cigarette burn on the front seat. I took that thing everywhere in search of players for the program. Now, Jeff and I work together through my executive coaching practice. I work with men and women looking to continue their leadership development through a peer advisory program I chair at Vistage Worldwide. What makes Jeff Shoe a significant figure in the Lake Norman community to highlight? Jeff is a classic southern gentleman and a native of Mooresville. Through all the success he has achieved in the car business, it hasn’t impacted his personality. He has remained a humble man of faith that is quick to serve his community. I am blessed to call him a “friend.” I caught up with Jeff at his dealership off East Plaza Drive where we discussed family, faith, Ford and a few other things!

M AT T : Great to see you. Mooresville Ford has been an important part of the Lake Norman business community for many years. You support and lead many initiatives in the area like the North Carolina Racing Hall of Fame event in downtown Mooresville this fall, numerous chamber events including being the title sponsor for their annual business luncheon. Talk a bit about those and others you support, and why it’s so important to you to do so. J E F F : I watched my dad spend his life constantly supporting our community. He just cared. Being supportive of our community is Mooresville Ford’s way of giving back and keeping my dad’s caring compassion alive. We contribute to a number of nonprofits in the community in addition to those you mentioned. Others include being title sponsor of the 2023 Christian Mission Turkey Trot and working with the Mooresville Graded School District. One of the ways we support the school district is by providing the Teacher of the Year with a vehicle. M AT T : If you could go back in time and relive one event as a youngster growing up in Mooresville, what would that be? What was that moment like for you? J E F F : Mooresville was a simple, quiet town to grow up in. High school was fun, and my closet friends today are the people I grew up with. That’s pretty special to me. From my late teens to my early 20s, a lot of my free time was spent on Lake Norman. No crowds whenever you were on the lake, weekends or not. Peaceful and fun. M AT T : How has Mooresville changed from that time? How has it stayed the same? J E F F : I guess the popular answer to how it has changed would be a question. Where did all the traffic come from? The Mooresville-Lake Norman area just isn’t a secret anymore. Our wonderful community has been discovered. As for how it has remained the same, our downtown area still has some of the

charm it had decades ago. That area has been re-vitalized with many new businesses and leaders. It’s a joy to still see smiling faces downtown. M AT T : Besides your mom and dad, who made the biggest impact in your life and how? J E F F : Matt, for most of my early and middle years in this business, it was mainly my dad. I watched how he treated people. He cared for our employees and customers alike. I learned the true meaning of perseverance from him. There were plenty of tough, lean years in a younger Mooresville. In addition to my dad, my business partner, Junie Michael, has made a big influence in my life. Like my dad, he taught me the true meaning of success. He is a man of integrity and ethical business practices. These two men influenced me greatly, and I’m most grateful for them. M AT T : Did you always dream of following your dad and becoming the Ford dealer in Mooresville, or was there a pivotal event that led you to where you are today? J E F F : After I graduated from college, I thought I’d work at the dealership for a few years and see how things might work out. It wasn’t long after graduation that it became clear to me that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a Ford dealer. In 2000, my dad retired, and Mr. Michael came on board. We became partners at that time. M AT T : What are some of the challenges in taking over from your dad, and how did you manage to overcome those difficulties? J E F F : I think one of the biggest challenges I encountered was earning our employees’ respect. I believe you do that by showing up every day and also by always having their backs. It is essential to support them in every way possible. Mooresville Ford would not be where it is today, a President Award winning dealership, without our dedicated team members. We are proud to have many team members who have been with us for decades.

HEARTY WINTER SALAD WITH GINGER DRESSING by K AT H A R I N E R O S E N T H A L

Simple winter salad recipe with arugula, wild rice, goat cheese, sweet potatoes and cranberries with a flavorful ginger dressing. Easy to make and special enough for a party! Servings: 6 Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 70 minutes Ingredients: • 1 cup wild rice, rinsed • 2 medium sweet potatoes, diced • 2 T olive oil • 1 cup pepitas • 5 oz arugula • 4 oz goat cheese, crumbled • ½ cup green onions, sliced • ½ cup dried cranberries Ginger Dressing: • ½ cup olive oil • 2 T rice vinegar • 2 T dijon mustard • 2 T grated fresh ginger • 2 T reduced-sodium soy sauce • ½ tsp black pepper

green onion and dried cranberries in a large serving bowl. Mix well. 5. Drizzle the dressing on individual servings so, if you have leftovers, the salad does not become soggy. Recipe Tips: • Try out wild rice microwavable pouches to cut down on time. You can find these at some grocery stores. • This hearty winter salad is packed with high-fiber ingredients - wild rice, sweet potatoes, and arugula help with digestion and balancing cholesterol and blood sugar levels. • To make this salad more balanced add a protein. Salmon, chicken, or chickpeas would all be great additions!

Instructions: 1. Start by cooking the wild rice. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the rinsed rice. Bring to a simmer and cook for 40-60 minutes or until the rice is tender (check the packaging of wild rice for exact instructions). Remove from heat, drain the rice and return to the pot. 2. While the rice is cooking, roast the sweet potatoes in a preheated oven (425 degrees). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the cubed sweet potatoes on the pan and drizzle with olive oil and salt, and mix well. Roast for about 25 minutes or until tender. 3. For the dressing, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk together. 4. Assemble the salad by combining the arugula, wild rice, roasted sweet potatoes, pepitas, goat cheese,

WHEN EVEN THE NAME REFLECTS EXACTLY WHAT YOU’RE D R E A M I N G O F, YO U K N O W YO U ’ V E S T E P P E D I N TO T H E RIGHT BOUTIQUE! It may barely be January, but for any girl with an eye already on prom season, now is the time to start shopping for that once-in-a-lifetime dress. Ideally, this high school milestone event should be the beautiful, relaxed experience you’ve always envisioned. But, Dina Haugstatter, owner of The Perfect Dress in Mooresville, discovered otherwise several years back when she and her own daughters were shopping for prom dresses. What she remembers most – long lines, crowds and disappointing styles – brought her full circle to opening The Perfect Dress, along with her daughter, Brooke, in September of 2021. After opening pop-up prom shops together in 2020 and early 2021, and seeing the real need for a quality shopping experience, the savvy mother-daughter duo tapped into Dina’s background in bridal and fashion. The two were determined there was a better model for showcasing stylish prom dresses in an inviting setting. It became their goal to have shoppers feel comfortable and beautiful – no matter what their size, shape or personal style. Happily, the perfect location also presented itself, and now, a popular destination in the charming, historic Merino Mill, this stylish boutique is definitely where prom dreams are realized. Yes, shopping for spring has already begun! Watch the boutique’s Instagram page for details on their Prom Kick-Off Fashion Show on Saturday, January 6th, and catch some exciting early glimpses of what’s being seen on the spring runways! “Spring collections are definitely about ruffles and romantic florals,” said Dina. “The color gold is trending for 2024, as well as metallic and high shine. So are bright colors such as pink and fuchsia, and Barbie-inspired dresses that align with upcoming fashion trends.” While that “perfect dress” does exist here, Dina and Brooke feel strongly about the overall experience as well – and you’ll feel pampered from the first moment you walk in. They promise the personal, one-on-one attention needed to find the dream dress that suits your personality. A popular bonus at The Perfect Dress – the boutique also keeps detailed records for each local high school, so making a dress purchase on the earlier side keeps your choice unique to you!

“Would highly recommend The Perfect Dress. Lovely staff, very helpful. Dina, the owner, helped me find the perfect dress, and the selection was unbelievable. It was also nice to support a local female-owned business.” - J E N N I F E R F.

THE PERFECT DRESS

Especially excited for this new year, Dina is thrilled to share how the boutique plans to give back to the community that has been so supportive of their small business from day one. “I’m so happy to say we will now have a platform where a portion of our prom dresses sold will go towards a scholarship fund,” explains Dina. “All high school seniors who purchase a prom dress with us will qualify to fill out a scholarship application. At the end of the prom season, all applications will go through a voting process in order to select the best scholarship candidate – or candidates – based on how much money we raise.”

sized girl, I really struggled to find a good selection of dresses in any other store, but they had plenty of options for me to choose from in all different colors and styles – and none of them looked dated. They went out of their way to help me find this dress I have fallen in love with and helped find a way to make it fit even better!” - C H L O E H .

This initiative means everything to Dina and Brooke, in keeping with their goals to put the most positive spin possible on shopping for your unforgettable prom night. Client testimonials tell you all you need to know about visiting The Perfect Dress! “This is the best dress store I have ever been in! The owner is so sweet and personable and tends to every need, concern and suggestion. I went there as a last hope to find my prom dress, and they did not disappoint! They have such a variety of dresses, and the owner and her daughter helped find ‘the perfect dress’ for me and suggested what colors and styles I would look good in. The atmosphere is so pretty and inviting! The wonderful people made it so easy to find my dress, and I will 100% travel the three hours back to this place for every dance I have! Best place ever!” - S Y D N E Y V. “Today I decided to go to The Perfect Dress to find my senior prom dress. I have looked in countless stores and nowhere compared to The Perfect Dress. GET YOUR YEAR OFF TO A GREAT START by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. Is that because the task feels onerous or because I fail at keeping them? Which the chicken, which the egg? Either way, my “problem” with resolutions is that they so often feel like corrections: • ●I am too flabby…I will exercise more • ●I eat too much crap…I will stop buying Lay’s Classic potato chips • ●I am cranky with the people I love…I will suck it up, push it down and put a fake smile on my face Sorry, but that’s as far from inspiring as it gets. Why would anyone look forward to the New Year with a list of “resolutions” like that? Instead, I start from an entirely different place, one that mirrors my approach to housework: when Thursday rolls around and it’s time to scrub down the bathrooms, I envision the end goal - a clean, well-ordered home - which makes it so much easier to get cranking. Now, as the New Year rolls in, instead of stressing over fixing myself and dreading what that would require, I get excited about imagining the kind of year I want to create and the actions I want to take to bring that year to life.

GROUND IT

GIVE IT MOMENTUM

Whether you use a vision board, create a collage, work from a spreadsheet, or write long hand in a brand spanking new journal, the important thing is to start from a place of aspiration and intention. You might choose an overarching theme for the year, such as “Compassion and Connection,” or “Bad -Ass Adventure.” Or maybe it is simply a word such as “Joy” or “Family.” If you need more, go ahead and write a brief paragraph.

From the “template” you’ve just created, begin to lay out one or two actions in each category that will get you moving in the direction of the year you want to have. Hint: I find using a garden analogy helpful, thinking in terms of actions that simplify or “weed things out,” as well as actions that are generative, that “plant seeds” for what I want to have or experience. I also think in terms of “nurturing” because what gets my attention is what I ultimately manifest.

C R E AT E A F E W K E Y C AT E G O R I E S This might include relationships, lifestyle, work and career, home, finances. These categories will change from year to year depending on your theme. January 2018 was the beginning of our first full year here in North Carolina. My theme for that year was “A new chapter, a fresh start.” My key categories included: “beautiful new home,” “new friendships,” “slower but still active lifestyle.”

C H A L L E N G E YO U R S E L F At this point, you will have a fairly rich image in place for the year you want to have, where you want to focus, and a few specific actions that support that image. Bravo! Now you need to vet it to ensure that what you’ve laid out is really what you want to go for. You do that by asking: • Does this vision for the year excite and inspire me? • Does this vision reflect who I am and support who I am becoming? • What can I change, scrap, or add to make this even more of what I want? • Is this vision too “safe”? Do I want to include more actions that will allow me to grow or develop myself in some way? • Have I focused enough on self-love in the form of self -care – spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical? Here’s to your beautiful year!

NEW YEAR, NEW LOCATION by M A R T I E E M O R Y

When Jasmine Egoavil began researching a permanent location for her business, Brighter Smiles of Davidson, she knew she wanted to find a convenient, accessible and welcoming space for her clients. “I searched for a place that worked best for their schedules, where they could get their teeth brightened,” Jasmine explained. “My days were getting booked up so quickly, I knew I needed a location where I could have multiple chairs and offer more whitening appointments on any given day.”

Brighter Smiles of Davidson will still offer mobile services on Fridays and will continue to attend pop-up events and collaboration events throughout the community. “I love getting to meet new people and giving them the ability to ask questions about teeth whitening, clearing up any issues that may have them apprehensive about the process initially,” Jasmine explains. Plus, she absolutely adores seeing glowing brides and confident grooms on their wedding days, showing off their fresh pearly whites!

With her passion for helping other people see their very best selves, Jasmine introduced Brighter Smiles of Davidson to the community at the start of 2023. Now, tucked away in the bright new space, customers are able to relax with music or watch their favorite binge-worthy show, as their time under the LED light flies by. Jasmine is thrilled with customer feedback, which applauds the comfort of the studio. For Jasmine, it was an efficient move as well.

“A lot of people who come see me are uncomfortable showing their teeth in pictures and, as a result, they end up not smiling in family photos,” she explains. “I can happily say that many clients have come back for touch-up sessions saying they are grateful to have found our services, because it gave them their confidence back – along with a beautiful smile!”

“With scheduling clients at 15-minute intervals, I am able to focus my attention on each one individually and still fit more appointments in each day,” she adds.

For patients with super sensitive teeth, Jasmine goes to great lengths to make sure sessions are pain free! Her gentle whitening treatment is made for those patients with sensitive teeth,

and she also offers a desensitizing gel that helps to strengthen enamel. “I use only high-quality products made in the United States that are FDA approved and safe for your teeth’s enamel,” she shares. “Sourcing the best and most effective treatments for clients is important to me as well as always keeping up with the newest industry techniques.” Brighter Smiles of Davidson is conveniently – and happily – located at 16623 Birkdale Commons Parkway 103A Suite 13, in Huntersville, NC, and you can reach Jasmine at 561.886.8081. Appointments are available Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. If you’re ready to book an appointment with Jasmine, visit linktr.ee/brightsmilesdavidson or brightersmilesdavidson.glossgenius.com. Remember to follow Brighter Smiles of Davidson on Instagram @brightsmiles_ davidson to stay up-to-date with any pop-up events. Jasmine also offers group discounts for bridal parties and ladies’ nights out, so gather your girlfriends or co-workers and arrange a self-care outing!

DEALING WITH SAD: Seasonal Affect Disorder by JEN OLENICZAK BROWN Every year, it happens like clockwork: the sun starts to set at what seems to be mid-afternoon. You make dinner, clean up, and are ready to go to bed, so you look at the clock and realize the horrific truth: it’s only 7 pm.

But it’s so dark. Your energy is zapped; you feel meh…and it’s so dark! For years I had no idea what happened to me in the late fall and winter months. Every year I would start feeling exhausted, upset, and ready to go to bed earlier than ever before. In the beginning, I didn’t talk about it with people, because like most mental health struggles, I felt the stigma around conversation. The more I talked to people…the more I realized that this is a pretty normal thing. This change of seasons that results in a sort of depression, otherwise known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects more than 20% of Americans. Often called casually the “winter blahs” SAD can be a major depressive disorder that is four times more common in women than in men. While I’m not a medical professional, and people should see their doctor if they are experiencing symptoms of SAD, we don’t openly discuss mental illness enough – and should. The stigma disappears when we openly discuss! According to American Family Physician, SAD includes symptoms like: • A change in appetite (especially a craving for sweet or starchy food) • Weight gain • Heavy arms or legs • Drop in energy • Fatigue • Oversleeping • Difficulty concentrating • Irritability • Increased sensitivity to social rejection • Avoidance of social situations For me, it was the drop in energy more than anything else. Like I mentioned, as soon as it got dark and cold outside – or even cool! – I would immediately notice a dip in my energy that would last until that first week of beautiful spring weather when things warmed back up. Which makes sense, because this winter depression is believed to be caused by a lack of sunlight.

36 | lkn-magazine.com

So how do we deal with this? Again, as I mentioned, I’m not a medical professional – but there are some things that help me get through these nasty winter months, and I’m more than happy to share with all of you! Talk to People I’ve been through a lot with my depression, both serious and seasonal, as well as my anxiety. The absolute worst thing I did across the board for all of it? Keep it to myself. The more I talked about it with my family, close friends, and therapist, the better I started to manage what I felt so ashamed about. Shame is an incredibly nasty emotion – talk about what you’re struggling with to people you love and trust. I promise they won’t judge you. Sunlight, All the Sunlight Also, wear sunscreen. Real talk: I try to get outside in the sunlight as much as possible during these months. Even if that “get out” is setting up work in a sunny part of my home, I make sure it happens whenever possible. I’ve also invested in what’s called a “happy lamp” – a light that emits vitamin D like the sun! It’s pretty concentrated, so I only use the happy lamp for 30 minutes a day…otherwise, I feel like I’ve just had a pot of coffee. Eat and Drink Well What I eat is directly related to how I feel – if I’m skimping on food or eating junk all day and drinking that pot of coffee that I think I need, I end up feeling so much worse than if I take time to eat food that I enjoy AND is good for me. For example, this morning I wanted to drink another cup (pot) of coffee – but I knew how much better I would feel if I drank water. Fast-forward to writing this for all of you, and I’ve drunk several glasses of water and feel much better (and hydrated). This doesn’t mean I deprive myself of treats! I just make sure I take care of my body and my mind. And again, please see a doctor if your symptoms aren’t helped by things you can do. I am also on a regular anti-depressant that allows me to commit to these coping techniques! Stay well and good luck!

When you eat probiotics, you’re adding microbes to your gut. Probiotic foods include kefir, kombucha, miso, sauerkraut, aged cheese, sourdough bread, yogurt, pickles and kimchi. Many people choose to take probiotics every day, while some might just use them periodically or whenever they feel the need for a little gut support. Find which way works best for you. You might think that once you have established good gut flora that it can then be left to its own devices. In reality, our lifestyles are now so challenging for our microbiome that many of us need to give it extra care on a regular basis. How To Make Prebiotics and Probiotics Work For You Before you start taking prebiotics and probiotics, there are some things to keep in mind in order to make sure they’re as effective as possible. Make sure your probiotics are kept cold in the refrigerator…heat can kill them because they are living organisms! You don’t need to refrigerate prebiotics. Also, antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in your gut…not just the bad ones. So, it’s worth replenishing the good bacteria with prebiotics and probiotics after you’ve finished your treatment.

THE INS AND OUTS OF PREBIOTICS Food Can Help Make All the Difference Making a change in your diet can help boost your prebiotic and AND PROBIOTICS probiotic intake, but eating the wrong things (like high-sugar Prebiotics and probiotics seem to be everywhere these days. On the aisles of the stores where we shop, talked about in magazine articles and overheard in conversations relating to health. These supplements come packaged as powders, gummies, pills and drinks and make big promises to improve digestion, boost the immune system, lower blood sugar and more.

and high-fat foods) can feed the bad bacteria in your gut and give them an edge over the good bacteria. Do Probiotics Help IBS?

Gut health, in general, is a hot topic almost everywhere you turn, and prebiotics and probiotics seem to be at the center of the discussion. Even though you may have heard about their benefits again and again, you may not know how each functions in maintaining a happy, healthy gut. Here are some basics to get you familiar with what prebiotics and probiotics can do to help your tummy.

A systematic review of trials in people with irritable bowel syndrome found that probiotics seem to improve the symptoms of this condition. However, the studies caution that it is unclear how significant the benefit may be or which strain of probiotic is most effective. The prebiotic type and dose may significantly impact symptom improvement and exacerbation. As a matter of fact, some evidence suggests higher doses of prebiotics can even negatively affect IBS symptoms. In any case, you may have to do some trial and error to find out what works best for you.

Prebiotics

Other Ways Probiotics May Help

Prebiotics are specialized plant fiber that act as food for good bacteria in the gut. This stimulates growth among the preexisting good bacteria. A lot of gastrointestinal problems can stem from not having the right level of good bacteria in your digestive tract. Prebiotics can be found in fiber-rich foods like green bananas, asparagus, artichokes, oats, soybeans, apples, garlic, onion, barley and wheat bran.

Some evidence suggests that in addition to improving gut health, probiotics may also do the following: • Improve mental health, such as symptoms of depression. • Decrease gestational diabetes. • Limit incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia. • Lessen the likelihood of vaginal infections. • Reduce eczema flares.

Probiotics Probiotics are living strains of bacteria that add to the population of good bacteria in your digestive system. They are live microorganisms found in fermented food that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide health benefits.

With all the hype out there, it’s important to be diligent in researching any product you may be considering. Better yet, get recommendations from people you know…and always remember to talk with your doctor before taking any new medication or supplement.

C H A R L O T T E B L U E G R A S S A L L S TA R S by R O B I N S H U P E K E L L E R Happy New Year, LKN readers! I hope that everyone enjoyed their Christmas holiday and was able to spend quality time with family and friends! Now, the music scene is wide open this holiday season, and I got to enjoy the best live music collaboration this side of the Mississippi. To start the New Year right, we will begin with the Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars and, although only one member is in the Charlotte city limits, all but one member, Jake Joines, is within a 30-minute drive. My introduction to the band was through the lead guitarist of the four-member team. Direct from their EPK... charlottebluegrassallstars.com/epk. Formed in October 2022, Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars is a genre-defying powerhouse hailing from the heart of Charlotte. This unique collaboration brings together a diverse ensemble of musicians, each drawing from distinct musical backgrounds, including rock, blues, classical, jazz and jam band influences. United by a shared passion for Bluegrass, they’ve woven a tapestry of sound that defies traditional boundaries and expectations. C H A D A N D R E W H A R R I S (Guitar) Chad’s mastery of the guitar and soaring vocals and harmonies create a captivating sound that is both soulful and powerful. His inventive and melodic playing elevates the band’s music to new heights, adding a touch of magic to every performance.

He seamlessly weaves intricate melodies that not only pay homage to the roots of Bluegrass but push the boundaries of the genre, as well. J A K E J O I N E S (Dobro) Jake’s nimble fingerpicking and soul-stirring solos on the dobro provide the backbone for Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars’ sound. His instinctual understanding of the genre shines through in his playing, and he brings an undeniable passion to every note. His rich and resonant tones perfectly complement the band’s overall sound, lending depth and texture to their music. I was lucky enough to enjoy this band and several other local bands that we will cover in the coming year, with next up, the Ladies Roundtable from the 2nd Singer Songwriters’ festival in Statesville November 16th-19th at the Arts Council building at the Old Jail in historic downtown Statesville! Go out, LKN readers, enjoy the local music scene and take in live music to support local musicians! Happy New Year, and look out for my February Music Stage group!

HOW TO SUPPORT THE CAREGIVERS by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N

For nearly a decade, my devoted yet weary mom cared for my father, 24/7, until he passed at age 47. She simultaneously juggled an apartment crowded with kids and pets, cooked, cleaned, and did her best to navigate the confounding Veterans Administration (VA). She walked everywhere, except when she took three busses to get to the VA several towns away. It was the early 1970s, and support for caregivers was not part of our cultural consciousness. This is a serious subject. Many, if not most caregivers have families, jobs, outside commitments. Not to mention, the same need for a fulfilling and balanced life just as the rest of us. Beyond feeling for them, we often want to do something, to help out in some way. The challenge is that we often don’t know how. Barry J. Jacobs, writing for the AARP notes that “not all help is helpful” and encourages us to think beyond dropping by with the well-intentioned casserole. “Logistical, financial and especially emotional support are vital to bolstering caregivers who are struggling with extended caregiving. But in order to make a genuine difference, these efforts need to be carefully tailored to the particular caregiver’s circumstances, personality and preferences.” I know that my mom could have used a boatload of help. But the point of looking at yesterday is to gain insight into living better and doing better today. Here are several specific ways you can support a caregiver in your life. Be sure to tailor your help to their needs.

Be there Empathize with the caregiver’s situation. Offer support by saying something like, “I know that you have a lot on your plate and I am always here to listen.” Or, “Caregiving isn’t easy. Just know that I am a text or a call away. I mean it.” Don’t give advice unless it is asked for. Ask for specific ways you can help You might say, “I also want to be a pair of hands, so please tell me how I can be of help.” You may have to be persistent about this because the caregiver may just wave you off. If so, you might add “Let’s brainstorm together,” or “How about just one specific thing I can do right now for you?” Offer to help in specific ways The more you know about the caregiver’s situation, the easier it will be to suggest concrete actions you can take to lighten their load. “Let me take that bedding over to the laundromat for you. I know you haven’t had the time and it gives me some reading time.” Substitute “cut the grass,” “walk Fido,” “do the food shopping” or some other task. Help them to build a support team Offer to help them create a short list of people who might help in a variety of ways. This strategy can be very effective when family and close friends live nearby. Just engaging in this thought process can make the caregiver feel less alone. Encourage them to take a break Many caregivers have lost the time and “freedom” to do the small things for themselves that translate into meaningful self -care. Whether it’s perusing the garden center, getting her nails done, or going to a yoga class, that break from the hands-on work of caregiving can be priceless. Spend time with them Being a caregiver is often a lonely and isolating experience, even without a pandemic. Extend yourself. Offer to come by with coffees for the two of you, or to engage in some other activity the caregiver would enjoy.

OPER ATION DREAM COACH by M I K E M C G I L V A R Y, A I F ® , F I N A N C I A L A D V I S O R It is a new year, and our team has already had the opportunity to review with the many investors we serve at Marzano Capital Group. The depth of these client conversations has been robust, and we view investor meetings as a privilege. I, along with the rest of our team, have been asked a very similar question from prospective clients that reaffirmed the continued need to educate on how our firm strives to add value. “What makes your firm different?” We enjoy being asked this because we feel strongly about our process. To answer the question, it would be appropriate to focus on three high level themes: 1.

Dream Coaching: Understanding how you envision your ideal life is a huge part of how we can add value. We sit across the desk from many clients that have never had a discussion surrounding their life goals. Retirement has to be a part of it, but living the type of lifestyle you want NOW can be an even larger part for some. Having these open architecture conversations is a very enjoyable part of our job and helps better create a roadmap for your situation!

2.

Three Cs of Communication: Clear, consistent and concise provide the foundation of our communication goal with clients. We strive very hard to make sure investors understand the nature of our investment management process. A large part of this is making sure we communicate clearly and proactively.

3.

Your Go-To Call: Most of our clients lean on us for more than just investment management. We pride ourselves on making sure we connect you with the right folks. We will do everything we can on our end to make sure you’re as financially bulletproof as possible, but if you need a loan/ line of credit, tax planning, estate planning, etc., we can make sure to point you in the right direction and be involved in these meetings to advocate on your behalf if you would like.

“We look forward to continuing to serve our current clients and welcome the opportunity to serve prospective clients.”

Being independent and working for our clients is our number one priority. We will do our best to make sure you can feel this during our discussions and planning sessions. We look forward to continuing to serve our current clients and welcome the opportunity to serve prospective clients. Please feel free to reach out to us anytime if we can be of assistance! The information provided here is for general information only and should not be considered an individualized recommendation or personalized investment advice. The investment strategies mentioned here may not be suitable for everyone. Each investor needs to review an investment strategy for his or her own particular situation before making any investment decision. All investing involves risk including loss of principal. THE POWER OF TOUCH by K A R E N C O O P E R The Science of Touch Research demonstrating the need for human touch is extensive. Babies literally cannot survive without human touch. Skinto-skin contact with the mother during the first hour after birth has been shown to help regulate temperature, heart rate, breathing and decrease crying.

there are other spa treatments to try like a manicure and pedicure or any treatment that sounds appealing. Getting a pet can be a good way to satisfy the need for touch as they mimic some of the benefits of human touch. Studies show that oxytocin levels peak in dog owners when they cuddle their pets.

Touch is important all through our lives. It is a big part of how we interact with others. We shake our co-workers’ hands, hug our loved ones and high-five our friends. We bond through physical touch.

Video chatting can be the next best thing to touch as interacting with others can ease some of the symptoms of touch starvation.

Skin happens to be our body’s largest organ. It sends good and bad touch sensations to our brain. When we are engaging in pleasant touch, like a hug with someone we love, our brain releases a hormone called oxytocin. This makes us feel good, increases our bond with the other person and can lower our feelings of anxiety and fear. Human touch can help regulate sleep and digestion, improve our immune system and even fight infections!

In general, the most important things we reveal through touch are authority and intimacy. For example, the handshake… it’s an opportunity to have an extended moment of touch with someone we may not know very well. We want to convey in this moment something about ourselves. Perhaps that we are strong but not overly strong, and we are warm and friendly, as well. The right eye contact and facial expressions must accompany this form of touch, and we can say so much without speaking a word. Touch can be a powerful tool. It has been shown that more touchoriented teachers, doctors and managers get higher ratings. Of course, there is always a line that can’t be crossed, and we must be aware of that line.

Effects of Touch Starvation What happens when touch is lacking in our lives? A few things that can happen are stress, anxiety and depression. As a response to stress, our body makes a hormone called cortisol. This can cause our heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension and breathing rate to go up which negatively impacts the immune and digestive systems. Lack of touch can lead to poor quality of sleep and worsen health overall. How to Increase Touch in Our Lives Now that we know how important human touch is, we want to make sure we get enough of it! If there is no one around to hug at the moment, we need to get in the habit of looking for alternate ways to get the therapeutic benefits of touch. Massage therapy is a great place to start. It has been shown to increase attentiveness, ease depression and enhance immune function. If massage therapy is not the right choice,

Touch as Communication

Maybe the most important time to communicate via touch is when someone needs consoling. Research shows that touch is the best way to comfort someone during a difficult time. If you ask people how they'd comfort someone in this type of situation, they tend to list pats on the shoulder or back, hugs, holding hands and other kinds of touch more than anything else. Touch can convey the message that a grieving person is not alone. It can also tell a joyful person they are being celebrated by others. Why is touch such an important part of our language? Maybe it’s because there are times – during intense grief or fear, but also in ecstatic moments of joy or love – when only the language of touch can fully express what we feel.

CELEBR ATING LOVE by M A R T I E E M O R Y In keeping with their heartfelt love for all things Christmas – as well as a strong passion for community – The Red Barn Marketplace in Denver invited local businesses to join their third annual “Walkin’ Around the Christmas Tree” event during December, to support a truly exceptional cause. Joining with the popular home décor and gift shop not only gave participants a chance to showcase their local business, but also provided a stellar opportunity to give back – with donations this year going to the amazing Aiden’s Light Mission Fund. “It’s all about LOVE, spreading love throughout our communities!” said Owner Laura Seagle. “Our tree event helps to provide a little bit of love to those parents who have lost their child, and God has called us to love one another just as he loves us!” That love has also spread worldwide, thanks to Aiden’s Light. “We are incredibly touched that The Red Barn Marketplace supports us with this beautiful event,” said the founders of Aiden’s Light. “We were brought to tears walking into it for the first time last year – overwhelmed, honored, humbled and so incredibly grateful. This fundraiser tremendously helps us support underprivileged children, both locally and abroad, in so many ways. We send soccer balls to communities all over the world, where children have never seen a soccer ball, let alone have one of their own. Our donations are allowing a basketball court to be built at an orphanage in Kenya where these children could never dream of such a thing. We believe the words of John 1:5 which state, “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness shall not overcome it.” Restoring that light – with Jesus – is what nudges Aiden’s Light Mission Fund to continue making the lives of suffering children a little bit better. Inspired by the mission’s work of love and giving, and the Denver shop’s huge passion for supporting local, 12 beautifully adorned Christmas trees were showcased in a large tent outside the shop for a week

in December, with a 13th, extra-special Golden Tree provided by The Red Barn Marketplace. Customers purchased $1 tickets to bid on their favorite decorated tree and $5 tickets to bid on the Golden Tree – winning gift cards and other prizes associated with each small business and the presents placed under each tree! “We have always had a variety of sponsors for this event,” said Kerrie Carter of The Red Barn Marketplace. “Chick-fil-A of Denver has been with us all three years, and one year, they sent soccer balls to Kenya in honor of Aiden, while their tree was decorated with soccer balls and cows. Southern Oncology once invited their patients to make ornaments for their tree.” This year, distinctively decorated trees represented the following local sponsors: Chick-fil-A Denver, Hoop Klip, Gone Country, LKN Realty, Dink to the Brink, Ridgecrest Garden Center, LKN Magazine, Dance Expressions, Westport Pickle Ball Club, State Farm Insurance/Agent Rich Lyon, Mission Farms Event Venue and C.S. Sales/Daybreak Outdoor. From pickleball-themed ornaments and a local realtor’s holiday motif to traditional sparkling holiday elegance and novelty designs including nutcrackers and candy cane dreams, each tree earned bids towards an impressive final total raised of $4,000! The Red Barn Marketplace sends heartfelt thanks to the community – for sharing the love and light! Look for gifts and unique home décor to start your new year off in style by planning a visit to The Red Barn Marketplace soon! The shop is located at 1612 N. Highway 16 in Denver, NC, 704.966.1358. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @theredbarn__ marketplace. For more information on the work of Aiden’s Light Mission Fund, visit aidenslight.com.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR TREE SPONSORS!  The Red Barn Marketplace extends its deepest gratitude to all the wonderful tree sponsors who made our 3rd annual Christmas tree fundraising event a tremendous success! A special shout-out to these incredible small and locally owned businesses who not only dedicated their time but also generously contributed an array of amazing items. Your support has been invaluable in helping us raise an outstanding total of $4,000 for Aiden’s Light.

G4G MINISTRIES

SERVING NEIGHBORS IN NEED by MARTIE EMORY

“LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU” – JOHN 15:12 In 2008, a few employees from Holland Transfer Company in Statesville, NC, borrowed a grill, visited a local men’s shelter to cook a meal and enjoyed fellowship next to some of their neighbors in need. Given the heartfelt response of those they served – and their gratefulness at being acknowledged – these volunteers knew they had found their true calling. By 2009, G4G Ministries (“Grill 4 God”) was able to purchase “Together, we can make a a van and a professional pull-behind grill. Since that simple difference, by helping our beginning, the faith-based 501(c)(3) organization has provided more than 100,000 meals in the Statesville area! Now with a steady neighbors see that they following of volunteers, the group is steadfast in their commitment to glorifying God by serving and ministering to those in need, both are loved and can have physically and spiritually. The Mobile Grilling and Ministry Impact a relationship with God, Team partners with other agencies throughout North Carolina to provide a hot meal, prayer time and the opportunity for the to provide hope in what community to connect with ministries who work diligently – right in they might perceive as a their own backyard. “Partnering with G4G is an excellent opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself,” explains Executive Director Brad Bullock, Jr. “Together, we can make a difference, by helping our neighbors see that they are loved and can have

a relationship with God, to provide hope in what they might perceive as a hopeless situation.” Every free meal served includes the ministry’s “secret recipe” grilled chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, bread and dessert. Volunteers are always needed to assist with meals by prepping chicken, grilling, serving, praying and cleaning up after the meal; and the team hopes you will spread the word about G4G Ministries throughout the community by sharing this vital mission with your own church group, civic organization, small group or business. Besides financial gifts to keep the growing ministry strong, G4G is always in need of basic supplies such as paper towels, cooking spray, grill lighters, disposable latex or nitrile gloves (sizes XL and XXL), fresh or frozen whole chickens, Bush’s Original Baked Beans and Clorox wipes.

“Without the support of sponsors, donors and dedicated volunteers, helping our neighbors in need of nourishment would not be possible,” adds Brad. “These neighbors – our brothers and sisters in Christ – may not walk into your church on Sunday morning, but they will certainly meet you under a tent for food and fellowship, love and prayer.”

For more information on G4G Ministries and how you can become involved, visit G4GMinistries.com, email info@ g4gministries.com or call 704.380.3708, and follow them on Facebook @ G4GMinistries. G4G Ministries is located at 22227 Salisbury Highway, in Statesville, NC.

In addition to serving meals locally, G4G Ministries also hosts an annual Golf Tournament in the Statesville area, with proceeds benefiting their continued mission to care for neighbors who may feel they have been forgotten. “Please see the website for a list of our growing partnerships,” adds Brad. “We are always looking for partners with a passion to feed and serve those suffering from food scarcity, poverty, violence, addiction and homelessness.”

PART 2

BUILDING CHILDREN'S SELF-ESTEEM T O C OM BAT C H I L DHO OD OBE S I T Y by K E I T H O ’ N E I L L , P H . D . , C . H T. In Part 1 of this article, we discussed the decline of family meals at “The Breakfast Table” and “The Dinner Table” and how it contributes to childhood obesity. We highlighted the critical role of self-esteem and emotional support in children’s lives and the consequences of its absence. In Part 2, we will delve deeper into the long-term impact of low self-esteem, provide guidance on building children’s self-worth, and underscore the importance of reviving the traditions of family meals.

TEACHING SELF-WORTH

T H E R A M I F I C AT I O N S O F L O W S E L F - E S T E E M

Teach Values: Instill values like responsibility, honesty, loyalty, and respect in your children. Show them that kindness and intelligence are attributes to be celebrated, not ridiculed.

Low self-esteem in childhood has far-reaching consequences. It is a root cause of childhood obesity, as children may turn to food to fill the emotional void. Additionally, children with low self-esteem are more vulnerable to bullying and may struggle with issues of fitting in and finding their place in life. This sets the stage for a cycle of self-doubt that can persist into adulthood. E A R LY D E V E L O P M E N T O F S E L F - E S T E E M The majority of a child’s self-esteem is developed in their formative years, particularly before the age of five. Therefore, it is essential for parents to take an active role in nurturing their child’s self-worth. Emotional support, quality time, and open communication are key ingredients in this process. T H E P O W E R O F F A M I LY M E A L S Family meals not only provide an opportunity to monitor the nutritional content of children’s diets but also allow parents to observe their children’s self-esteem. Signs of emotional issues, such as lethargy, overeating, or a lack of willingness to communicate, can be spotted during these shared meals. However, to notice these signs, parents must prioritize spending time together as a family.

64 | lkn-magazine.com

To combat low self-esteem and its associated problems, parents should focus on instilling self-worth in their children. Here are some key principles to consider: Lead by Example: Live your life with integrity so that your children look up to you as role models and aspire to emulate your positive qualities.

Handling Success and Failure: Teach your children to be good winners and gracious losers. Practicing humility and resilience will help them navigate life’s challenges. Embrace Uniqueness: Encourage your children to embrace their individuality and appreciate what makes them unique. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries and enforce them consistently, teaching children about the consequences of their choices. Love Unconditionally: Ensure that your children feel loved and accepted unconditionally, fostering their sense of self-worth.

Childhood obesity is a complex issue, and its roots go beyond diet and exercise. Low self-esteem is a significant contributor, and the decline of family meals plays a pivotal role in this crisis. It is the responsibility of parents to address this problem by nurturing their children’s self-worth and providing emotional support. By rekindling the traditions of family meals, we can help our children grow into healthy, confident, and self-assured individuals, mitigating the problems of bullying and obesity. It’s time to take action and make self-esteem a priority in our children’s lives.

JA N UA RY : H U M A N T R A F F IC K I N G AWA R E N E S S M ON T H by E L I S A W. C O P P E D E What is a severe life-threatening problem that affects every country in the world? Human trafficking. According to dosomething.org, a website dedicated to helping young adults volunteer, promote social change, and conduct civic action campaigns to make a real-world impact on causes they care about, “internationally, only about .04% of survivors of human trafficking cases are identified, meaning that the vast majority of cases of human trafficking go undetected.” How many international human trafficking cases does this translate to? “Internationally, there are between 20 million and 40 million people in modern slavery today,” the website states. What is even more shocking is that many of these cases occur in the United States, not a far-off country. “In 2018, over half (51.6%) of the criminal human trafficking cases active in the US were sex trafficking cases involving only children,” the website states. Why is this a business that continues to flourish? Just like all supply versus demand industries, this business continues to move on because the profits are so high. “Human trafficking earns global profits of roughly $150 billion a year for traffickers, $99 billion of which comes from commercial sexual exploitation,” the website reports. With numbers as terrifying as this, it is vital to properly educate ourselves on human trafficking, as well as learn how to prevent future cases from happening to loved ones. Since there are a great number of myths out there about human trafficking, it is first important to be able to distinguish between truth versus myths. Take time to educate yourself this January and learn and read on to learn all about the dangers of this far too common “business.” Human Trafficking Myth #1: Only women and girls are victims of human trafficking. This is absolutely a myth in that this industry does not only seek women and girls. One study estimates that as many as half of trafficking cases are male. What types of males are most vulnerable to becoming trafficked? According to the Polaris.org website, which operates the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline, “this percentage may be even higher, but male victims are far less likely to be identified.” Also, LGBTQ boys and young men are particularly vulnerable to trafficking, so it is vital to note this.

66 | lkn-magazine.com

Human Trafficking Myth #2: Human trafficking only occurs in “underground” or shady locations. This is another commonly stated myth about human trafficking. While many may think that this illegal activity occurs in seedy, drug-fueled spots, many of the victims of human trafficking are sought out in extremely common places. These spots include restaurants, cleaning services, construction sites, factories, and more. Human Trafficking Myth #3: Traffickers target random individuals whom they do not know. This is another false statement. Sadly, many victims of human trafficking often are “recruited” into the industry by romantic partners, friends, and even family members. Since there is a level of trust already there, it is easy to understand how so many young adults get lost in this trade. Human Trafficking Myth #4: Only runaways are vulnerable to human trafficking. While runaways can absolutely get caught up in trafficking cases, these are not the only individuals who may become “groomed” for this industry. According to Polaris.org, “human trafficking can happen to anyone.” However, it is vital to note that some people are more vulnerable than others. What are the risk factors that could make one more vulnerable? “Specific risk factors include recent relocation, substance use, mental health concerns, involvement with the child welfare system, and being a homeless youth,” the website states. Often traffickers know how to spot these individuals and can help create dependency quickly. Human Trafficking Myth #5: Trafficking victims are held against their will and cannot physically escape. This is our last “myth” to debunk. While this can occur in specific situations, this is not the case for all victims. Some victims become so dependent on their leaders that they lack the necessities needed to get out of the business safely (i.e., transportation, accommodations, jobs, etc.) Other victims become so manipulated, they do not identify as being under the control of another person. Please properly educate yourself on this horrible crime so we can prevent future victims!

8 GREAT MOVIES FILMED in NORTH CAROLINA by KAREN COOPER North Carolina (especially the Wilmington area) has often been called “Hollywood of the East.” Considering how geographically diverse our state is, it’s really no surprise that filmmakers choose it again and again for all or part of their filming locations. From the dense green forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the scenic waters of its many beaches, some of the most critically acclaimed films have been made right here in our fair state.

D I R T Y D A N C I N G (1987) Locations: Lake Lure Baby (Jennifer Grey) dreams of joining the Peace Corps. She is clearly not happy about spending the summer at Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills with her parents and prima donna sister whose main concern is whether or not she packed the right shoes. Everything begins to change when the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny (Patrick Swayze), chooses Baby as his new partner (out of desperation), and the two begin to fall in love.

D AY S O F T H U N D E R (1990) Locations: Charlotte Racing brings Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise) to North Carolina to race in the Winston Cup at Charlotte Motor Speedway. A rivalry turned to friendship between Trickle and Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker) leads to a tough decision. A potential injury results in a love interest with neurosurgeon Dr. Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman).

B U L L D U R H A M (1988) Locations: Durham and surrounding areas, Asheville Bull Durham’s Crash Davis (Kevin Costner), a twelve-year veteran in minor league baseball, is sent to Durham as the team’s catcher to educate their star player, pitcher, ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh (Tim Robbins). Comedy and a love triangle ensue as Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) is dedicated to her tradition of sticking with only one player a season, but also attracted to another.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, M I S S O U R I (2017) Locations: Sylva, Asheville, Black Mountain Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) decides to take things into her own hands after her daughter is murdered. She paints three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town’s chief of police.

T H E G R E E N M I L E (1999) Locations: Blowing Rock, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) had never encountered someone like John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a massive man convicted of brutally killing two young sisters. Coffey possesses the size and strength to kill anyone, but not the personality. Coffey also seemed to have an extraordinary, supernatural gift. Edgecomb begins to question Coffey’s guilt.

T H E L A S T O F T H E M O H I C A N S (1992) Locations: Chimney Rock James Fenimore Cooper’s classic novel appeared in 1826, sixty-nine years after the events of the French and Indian War that is its subject. In the 1992 film version, the last members of a dying Native American tribe, the Mohicans, Chingachgook (Russell Means), Uncas (Eric Schweig), and his adopted half-white brother Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) are living in peace alongside British colonists. When the daughters Cora and Alice Monru (Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May) of a British colonel are kidnapped by a traitorous scout, Hawkeye and Uncas must rescue them in the midst of a deadly military conflict which they wanted no part of: the French and Indian War.

C O L D M O U N TA I N (2003) Locations: Pisgah National Forest Based on the 1997 bestselling novel by Charles Frazier, Cold Mountain recounts the story of a wounded Confederate soldier (Inman) Jude Law at the end of the Civil War. Inman’s main desire is to get home to his sweetheart Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) with whom he has only shared a few moments, but to whom he still feels a deep connection. His journey is perilous and long and the people waiting back home do not have an easy time of it either. S A F E H A V E N (2013) Locations: Southport, Blue Ridge Parkway A young woman, Katie (Julianne Hough) with a mysterious past lands in Southport, North Carolina, from Boston where her bond with widower Alex (Josh Duhamel) forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her. GUESTS AT THE L AKE by R O C K Y T H O M P S O N The best lake houses are the ones with loads of extra beds and bedrooms that operate with a revolving door for friends and family to visit over the summer. That’s true whether it’s your house or a friend’s place. In fact, it might be better if it’s a friend’s place. But, if it is your house, there are a few things you can look forward to over the summer (I mean, besides the obvious that it’s great to see all your family and friends). For starters, you will never have to stock your beer fridge. When guests arrive, their first stop is always the grocery store to buy snacks, dinner and beer. And they always, always overbuy on beer. The thing with beer buying is that you never get it perfect, you always buy too much or too little. Since it’s better to have too much beer, everyone buys way more than they will drink, and when they leave, your garage fridge is still packed. The downside is that you have to drink whatever they leave, so you kind of work your way through the beers you like, onto the ones that are just okay, and then by the time you get to the ones you really don’t like, usually the next round of guests will arrive with a fresh restock. There are a handful of mysterious looking beers

82 | lkn-magazine.com

that have been floating around the back of my fridge for a few years. You will also never run out of firewood or s’mores ingredients. Everyone who arrives will bring fresh graham crackers, chocolate and piles of marshmallows. The thing you may run out of is s’mores sticks for the campfire since they tend to get left down by the firepit and covered in ants or marshmallow-crusted dirt and sand to later get thrown in the trash. Whoever came up with the idea of s’mores was a genius. And, whoever thought it’d be a good idea for kids to wave around sharpened sticks with flaming marshmallows was a madman. The secret to having so many guests and not going crazy is not doing too much. This comes easily to some hosts while others can’t help themselves and try to cook two hams and set up a dessert bar for every meal. Try to let go. Write your WiFi password on the wall somewhere. Make sure people know where the beach towels are stacked (and where the laundry detergent is) and set them loose. Bonus points if you can delegate a different family to be in charge of dinner each night.
