DECEMBER IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MONTHS SO MANY NEW MEMORIES TO MAKE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS!

I

HOLIDAY “GET TOGETHERS”

Getting to December, however, was another story. I cannot tell a lie—this issue of LKN was difficult, but was it worth it? Heck yeah! I couldn’t be happier about ending 2022 with this fabulous finale! Let us know what you think and please follow us on social media @lknmagazine. If you’ve missed an issue, check out our past issues online at lkn-magazine.com. You can also sign up for out monthly email newsletter to stay on top of the people, places, events and issues we cover.

WHAT’S NEW?

First up, we have some new partners (and more in the works)! A BIG welcome to our new collaborators and new members of the LKN dream team. I’m happy to introduce Kate Shaw, our brand-new graphic designer. No doubt you will see her ‘stamp’ on this issue, but we are just getting warmed up and our team couldn’t be more excited! We’d also like to introduce Robin Shupe, our editorial director and go-to for so much more. Check out more details on both amazing ladies on our ‘View from the Lake’ on page 46.

GETTING AROUND

As most of my friends and family know, I am directionally challenged (I can’t imagine a time before Google Maps). But I’ve really started to learn more about this area and its footprint — such a beautiful and growing community. I have really grown to adore the towns of Newton and Conover. And then on the other side of lake… Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville are few more of my favorite places! Previously, everything seemed so far away, and now I see that many of these lovely locales are just a hop, skip and a jump from each other. Our readers and advertising partners repeatedly tell us they are happy to head to a new favorite restaurant, a fabulous boutique, or whatever they’ve discovered while shopping and attending events in our community. And we

are honored to be a resource for our readers to find out about local events and local businesses! Speaking of…if you have an event coming up, please let us know. You can submit on our website and it’s free! Check out our current calendar of events on pages 76 – 81, don’t forget to check out our online events at lkn-magazine.com for those events that weren’t submitted in time for our December issue. So much to do over the holidays!

SHOP LOCAL!

Did you know that for every $100 spent at a small business, $48 is put directly back into the local economy? Some stats claim even higher than that! On the contrary, when you shop online at a national chain, less than $1 of that $100 goes back to the local economy. So, whether you need that perfect holiday party outfit or something for those that are hard-to-buy-for, please show our community some love and SHOP LOCAL! Need some ideas or inspiration? Check out our Holiday Gift Guide on pages 32 – 41!

INSPIRATION IN EVERY DETAIL

Pop into CoCo Couture in Cornelius, NC, and you’ll feel it right away: There’s a positive energy in every stylish detail and an unmistakable vibe making shoppers feel comfortable enough to venture outside their fashion comfort zone.

Having celebrated their fifth anniversary this past October, the upscale women’s boutique located at the heart of Lake Norman in Jetton Village is more than simply shopping. For owner, Candace Bongiovanni, it’s nothing less than her “dream job,” and for clients, it’s nothing short of magical, leaving the boutique with an outfit that embraces every detail of their personality.

“After being in the retail industry for over 20 years, my inspiration for CoCo Couture came after a trip to New York City during the holidays,” explains Candace. “After seeing the unveiling of all the window displays for the major retail stores, I was beyond enamored with all the sophistication behind the detail of putting together gorgeous collections.”

As we all know, feeling upbeat in a favorite outfit can change a moment, a day, and even a lifelong attitude. Fashion overflows with emotion, and Candace realizes curating a

wardrobe for a client can truly be life changing. Feeling beautiful translates to feeling confident!

“When a client calls to schedule a wardrobe consultation for a special occasion, I have just been invited into one of the most important aspects of her life,” says Candace. “She is entrusting me to create a look that both empowers and embraces her personality and her beauty!”

The boutique also offers two unique extras, including a concierge service. If you need a special occasion collection and can’t make it to the shop because of work commitments, they will deliver (locally) to your home or business.

Even more fun—maybe for you and a friend!—try their Wardrobe Consultation Service.

“We offer a complimentary service to our clients that includes coming in for us to curate a wardrobe based on their lifestyle and needs,” explains Candace. “Let’s say they have a special piece or two they really love in their wardrobe—we ask them to bring those pieces and let us implement them within the wardrobe we create.”

This helps give customers the best value for their money, and the shop’s seasoned consultants also offer suggestions on accessorizing those well-loved pieces. Schedule a session for you and a friend, and they will also have a bottle of chilled champagne ready and waiting!

Those close relationships with clients are rewarding, but also a responsibility, and one the entire CoCo Couture team takes seriously!

“I am so proud of the ladies who represent CoCo Couture—an amazing team of seven,” adds Candace. “We have such unique personalities within our team, and we all bring different designs and suggestions. It truly is a fashion house that far exceeds any other retail establishment that I have come across. We also strive for superb customer service, giving our clients a shopping experience that they are sure to enjoy and want to revisit!”

Just in time for the holidays, join the ladies at CoCo Couture December 6 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. for their Holiday Open House, complete with fun-filled gift ideas and special discounts.

From chic jeans and career outfits to casual dresses and even dressier options, CoCo Couture offers endless choices and stylish combinations, with sophisticated lines that include Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman, Susan Shaw, LYSSE, Alberto Makali, Brighton Jewelry, and Julie Vos jewelry. GIVE THE GIFT of BEING PRESENT

The holiday season has always been my favorite time of year, but more so now than ever as I experience the magic through the eyes of my seven- and four-year-old boys. Every year leading up to this magical time, I vow to myself that I will be in the moment, and fully present, to truly experience the joy. But, somehow, I exit the holiday season feeling like it completely passed me by without fully being in it. Despite my best effort, the holidays pass faster than you can say the word ‘Christmas’, and I’m always left feeling like I spent too much time focusing on finding the perfect gift, checking off my never-ending to-do list, and, of course, responding to the constant pings from my phone, when instead, I should have been experiencing it and taking it all in.

According to a 2010 Harvard study, we’re not fully present for almost 50% of our time, instead we spend most of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we’re actually doing. But, why? Why is it so hard to live in the present moment? Well, first, it’s human nature to be thinking about something else. We are evolutionarily hardwired to constantly think about the future (what we need to do) and dwell on that past (what did we do). Hundreds of years ago, human survival relied on planning and learning to survive. Now, it is merely preventing us from

being present. And, second, we live in a world dominated by smart phones – literally interrupting us – and distracting us from being present. So instead of actively being present, we are on auto-pilot, letting time pass without awareness or presence.

This season I’m shutting down my auto-pilot mode, and committing myself to being more present and aware of what’s happening (when it’s actually happening). While my initial motivation to be ‘fully present’ is to do the impossible—slow father time—there are some real benefits. These benefits include: better moods, more energy, and it allows you to better regulate your emotions. But above all else, it allows you to form deeper and more authentic connections – and to me, that’s the greatest gift of all.

So, what does ‘being fully present’ really mean? Well according to Headspace (a popular meditation app), being present means being focused on one thing—a conversation, a project, a task in hand—without distraction, without wanting to be somewhere else, without being in your head and lost in thought. While it sounds simple enough - it can be challenging especially in the chaos of the holidays. So here are a few ways I plan to ensure I stay as present as possible:

16 | lkn-magazine.com

How many of you have been in the middle of a conversation with someone and realize you have completely stopped listening, distracted by your own thoughts? Well, it happens to me way too often. Part of being present is giving the person you’re speaking with your undivided attention. Practice active listening by not interrupting, staying focused, asking questions, and listening without judgment.

ACTIVE LISTENING

For me, my phone is a constant distraction whether it be emails, texts, calls or social media—it can interrupt me from whatever I’m doing. So, for me, I’m going to make myself unplug, turning my phone off when I’m spending quality time with the people I love.

UNPLUG

There are so many benefits to meditation—it improves focus and attention, reduces stress and anxiety, reduces age related memory loss (the list goes on and on). But meditation teaches you to focus on your body and breath in that exact moment—this in turn is teaching you to quiet your mind and focus on the present moment. There are apps to help you on kick off your mediation practice like Headspace and Calm, and I plan to start with small 10-minute daily sessions.

MEDITATE

I’m a control freak at the core but this year when things don’t go as planned, I’m going to push myself to let it go. I plan to pause, take a few breaths, and enjoy the moment for what it is (rather attempting to fix it).

LET GO

I hope you’ll join me this season and let’s all give the best gift of all: being fully present with our families, friends, and loved ones. Happy Holidays.

CLARK - "Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?"

"Naw, I'm doing just fine, Clark."- EDDIE

This classic exchange from the movie Christmas Vacation spotlights the American tradition of gathering around the punchbowl filled to overflowing with (potentially spiked!) eggnog to ring in the holiday season. This sweet, thick, spiced liquid is the beverage of choice for many this time of year, and is a staple at bars, restaurants, and holiday gatherings throughout December. At every turn, iterations of eggnog abound…pies, cakes, popcorn, smoothies, cheesecake, coffee, ice cream, and even bubble gum all give a nod to this holiday classic. But where did eggnog originate and how did it become associated with Christmas?

THE EARLY YEARS: Eggnog, in its boozy state, has been around since the 13th century and was originally an English hot drink called posset - a mixture of milk curdled with wine or beer. Down the line it is believed that monks were the first to add eggs to the concoction and on occasion, figs. Posset was most prevalent among the elite due to the high cost of milk, eggs, and liquors like brandy and sherry. Hence, eggnog became the trademark drink of the British aristocracy and it was customary to raise a glass to prosperity and good health throughout the year.

CIRCA MID 1700S – EARLY 1800: In time, this creamy beverage made its way across the pond to America where farm and dairy products were plentiful. Due to the heavy taxes on brandy, early settlers modified the recipe, replacing traditional English spirits with very affordable rum. Colonists referred to rum as grog, and bartenders served rum in small wooden carved mugs called noggins. As time marched by, alterations of the drink’s name changed from egg-n-grog to eggnog, and it went from being a chilled drink consumed in cold months to a beverage specifically enjoyed at Christmastime.

EGGNOG RIOT OF 1826: A Christmas tradition gone awry… The place, West Point. The context, annual Christmas party. For obvious reasons, alcohol was banned from the premises, but on December 25th, 90 defiant cadets managed to successfully smuggle a large quantity of whiskey onto campus disguised as eggnog where, reportedly, a particularly raucous display ensued. The extent of destruction was significant and 11 of the most offensive partygoers were court-martialed and kicked out of West Point. Nonetheless, the soldiers (and plenty of civilians, too) continued to enjoy eggnog as the years rolled by. As one enlisted serviceman remarked, “Eggs are very plenty and very cheap, and lots of eggnog are to be drunk. The ‘boys’ are bound to do it.”

20TH CENTURY EGGNOG: The Christmas-sy libation was enjoyed by the affluent and ordinary U.S. citizens alike until Prohibition (1920-1933) put a damper on things. In time, however, homemade boozy eggnog made a (legal) comeback and ringing in the holidays was common practice everywhere. Even the U.S. White house was known to raise a glass with their guests at Christmastime. In fact, President Dwight Eisenhower, known for his commitment to innovation, came up with his own twist on the Christmastime cheer which included: one dozen egg yolks, one pound of sugar, and one quart each of coffee cream, whipping cream, and bourbon.

EGGNOG TODAY: Whether the liquid cheer is jazzed up a little (or a lot) for adult drinkers, there seems to be no middle ground –folks either love it or say bah-humbug to this yuletide beverage. Sales have actually shot up significantly across recent years with Americans consuming 54 million bottles of store-bought eggnog in 2020. Although the convenience factor of readymade eggnog cannot be underrated, there is truly nothing that comes as close to the taste of the original beverage as homemade. This holiday season, whether you opt for off-the-shelf or made-from-scratch, provide your guests an extra measure of festiveness by adding a dash of grated nutmeg, a dollop of whipped cream, and a cinnamon stick to your mug of eggnog. Cheers!

The Pink Boutique

THE BRIGHTEST SHOPPING SPOT AROUND!

If you’re lucky enough to know Kelly Avery, you know she’s all about the love.

Whether you’re her friend, family member, or cherished customer, that faith-based positivity is what keeps her going on busy days as an entrepreneur!

As owner of The Pink Boutique in Mooresville— which also happens to feature the largest ladies’ mobile boutique in the area!—Kelly’s love for people makes a visit to the warehouse a definite bright spot in anyone’s day. Her customers are never just customers—they become part of her family!

“If I can help somebody find a new look that makes them feel special, or a piece of clothing that makes them feel beautiful, then I love it!” she says, reflecting a major part of her overall business philosophy: Empowering women with fashionable, yet affordable choices.

“And yes, it’s possible to spend a reasonable amount on fashion, and still look and feel beautiful!” she shares.

You’ll also find Kelly’s favorite quote prominent in the business: “She is clothed with strength and dignity” (Proverbs 31:25), and not one

person leaves the boutique without knowing just how much Kelly appreciates them. She credits her strong work ethic to both her parents, who were an amazing business duo themselves, owning a racetrack in New Hampshire for over 30 years.

“They both taught me to work hard, be kind, be thrifty, and appreciate people,” Kelly says. “I work hard every day to make them proud. Since my mom passed, I lean on my dad for support, and we talk about the business every single day! He gives the best advice, and we always end up with “what would Mom say?” at the end of our conversations. He always reminds me to make people smile!”

When Kelly moved here from New Hampshire for a more corporate career, she realized she needed flexibility to spend time with her daughters, now 13 and 15. There’s never a dull moment with The Pink Boutique or the beloved Pink Truck—a community favorite, but she’s found the perfect niche.

The 40-foot truck, designed as an actual boutique with a large dressing room, two mirrors, even heat and AC, travels through the Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee, offering fun, stylish clothing in sizes small to 3XL. From tops,

bottoms, dresses, and jumpsuits, to outerwear, lounge wear, camis, curvy styles, shoes, and accessories, there’s truly something for every shopper.

“We travel around the Lake Norman area showcasing and selling our products, and we also offer private parties and fundraisers at schools, sporting events, festivals, and more!” explains Kelly. She always embraces the opportunity to give back, and partners with many nonprofits and businesses to provide visits from that hard-to-miss Pink Truck! Give Kelly a call if you’d like to host the Pink Truck at your home, workplace, or special event.

Kelly and her trusted helpers are busier than ever this time of year, with their “12 Days of Christmas” promotion, plus an in-store holiday event planned for December 10. Watch their website, Facebook, and Instagram pages for updates on holiday happenings including plenty of Facebook Live Sales. It’s a full life, and Kelly is thankful for the unique opportunity to remind women of their true beauty, and lift the spirits of everyone she meets!

“I do this for the love,” she says. There’s no better success than that!

THE Tastemaker

Meet Tyler Hampton, the tastemaker behind Hampton’s Men’s Clothing. All family businesses have to start somewhere, and the story of Hampton’s inception is quite a unique one! The business is that of the mother and son team, Jan and Tyler Hampton, both of whom had little experience in retail. Tyler inspired the dream and passion, and, Jan, being the loving and supportive mother she is, invested in Tyler’s aspirations. Though their beginnings were humble, the desire to become the best they can be has never wavered.

photography by CARRIE ALLEN

Hampton’s Men’s Fashions

Launched originally in downtown Davidson in 2014, Hampton’s opened in a small retail storefront owned by Tyler’s grandfather and Jan’s father, Dr. Donald Copeland on his 80th birthday! Being that Tyler was still a student at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the original focus was on a more preppy and collegiate clientele, but Tyler quickly recognized the need for a highend men’s store in the Lake Norman area, and his vision became clear. Upon graduation in 2016, Tyler and his mother agreed that it was time for the store to graduate as well.

Now in the exclusive Langtree Village in Mooresville, Hampton’s has elevated from the preppy-collegiate style into the luxury market and offers tailored clothing with distinction. Hampton’s offers garments for nearly every occasion, ranging from upscale golf apparel to bespoke suits and coats to the finest cashmeres from Italy. Many of the collections displayed in the store come from smaller, family-owned lines throughout Europe. “Quality stems from the tradition of passion fueling the brands; no one cares about the product more than the person whose name is behind it, which reigns true for our store as well,” says Tyler. The move to highend menswear filled a much-needed void in the lake area, and Hampton’s has developed a close following of happy repeat customers. Tyler is not just one of the owners and operators, but also the person who decides what styles and brands the store selects to carry. Tyler’s style icon is Steve McQueen—one of the luminaries who inspired him to create a store with the tagline, “For the man who has everything, we have what he doesn’t.”

“My style pulls from several facets: traditional English, luxurious Italian, and classic American,” he said. “For example, nothing feels as great on the shoulders as Neapolitan tailoring in a suit or coat, but I like to add other details to my personal jackets, such as hacking

(angled) pockets, a ticket pocket, and maybe just three functional buttons on the cuff instead of four, blending the Italian tailoring with more English and American inspired details.” I don’t do the same items every season, and I’m not afraid to take risks with brands and collections which may not yet have a US presence or even be known stateside,” Tyler said. “This season, I brought in an Italian cashmere line called Pashmere. One of my favorite pieces they have is a cashmere bomber jacket lined in beaver fur. It’s a beautiful piece you won’t see elsewhere— we have the only two in the United States.”

Whatever he chooses to bring into the store, Tyler said he first considers its style, with a focus less on trends and more on timeless pieces.

“I always tell people to view menswear as an investment,” he said. “On many occasions, women may wear things once, whereas men continue wearing their clothes for years to come.” The menswear you’ll find in Hampton’s is unique, but not necessarily from the trendy world of high fashion.

Every independently owned store is in some way a reflection of its owners. Nowhere is that more evident than in the high-end men’s store, Hampton’s, which represents Tyler and Jan’s ideas, vision, and business savvy!

When visiting Hampton’s you’ll find The 19th Tee Lounge, an indoor golf facility, right next door. It’s a comfortable lounge with a full bar and two golf simulators. Pay by the hour to swing your clubs at a vast variety of virtual courses, or become a member and join one of their leagues, all owned and run by Tyler and Jan.

Hampton’s Men’s Clothing is located at 120 Langtree Village Drive, Suite 105, Mooresville, NC. 704-230-4458. Plus, browse and shop online at HamptonsMens.com

SMART SHOPPING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season brings us good food, family time, decorations, parties, and Santa Claus. It also brings a great deal of stress for some people. One of the leading stressors of the holiday season is gift buying. There is a certain level of expectation (usually self-inflicted) that some people feel regarding buying presents and making sure they are giving everyone on their list that “perfect gift”. I would prefer the holiday season be filled with family, friends and making memories, but ultimately, shopping madness seems to take over for a lot of folks. Therefore, here are a few things you can do to make sure your holiday shopping doesn’t wear you down and break the bank.

HAVE A LIST AND IDENTIFY A BUDGET.

Make sure everyone is on your list that you intend to buy a gift for and then decide how much you will spend on each one of them. The list and the budget are the easy parts. Sticking to it can be the difficult part. Save receipts and keep a constant calculation of how much you are spending on each person. This will help you stay within the budget you created for yourself and ensure that you do not dip into other dollars that are designated for other things. More importantly, this keeps you from piling up unwanted credit card debt. It is frightening the number of parents who are willing to go into debt during the holidays just so their children will be able to open every gift on their wish list.

02

FIND THOSE DEALS!

Who doesn’t love a good deal? There are plenty of deals and specials this time of year. Finding things on sale can really help make your holiday budget a reality. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both days that you can capitalize on the best sales of the year.

SHOP ONLINE AND SAVE TIME (AND GAS).

Speaking of Cyber Monday, online shopping is becoming more and more popular as shopping malls and strip mall stores have begun closing their doors. Not to mention the impact the pandemic has made on in-person shopping over the last two holiday seasons. Be sure to do your online shopping early enough so you can avoid overnight shipping costs. Don’t forget to check out your favorite local stores and shops as they have made it convenient to do your shopping online while still supporting your community. One advantage of having gifts delivered to your doorstep is that it allows for more time for what the season is all about…quality time with family and friends.

04

HOW ABOUT AN EXPERIENCE INSTEAD OF A GIFT?

The gift of time is more important than material things because it creates a memory. If you polled a large number of people and asked them what they got for Christmas in year 2005 (or any year prior to last year for that matter), you would probably get a lot of guesses and “I don’t know”. However, that same group of people probably remember that weekend trip to the mountains, the tickets to a show or event, or even a membership to the local zoo or nature science center that you can enjoy all year long.

THE BEST OF EVERY SEASON

IN THE ULTIMATE SEASON OF GIVING, YOUR BEST GO-TO SHOPPING DESTINATION THIS MONTH IS SWEET GRASS. THEN, AGAIN, EVERY SEASON OF THE YEAR IS A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE AT THIS POPULAR MOORESVILLE BOUTIQUE: CHRISTMAS, MOTHER’S DAY, BIRTHDAYS, BABIES, AND EVERY LIFE MOMENT IN BETWEEN!

THE EXPERIENCE

Easy, but stylish, wrapping in their signature gift bag has you on your way in minutes, with a treasure that’s sure to please the recipient, and Sweet Grass owners, Michelle and Rich Harris, love sharing their appropriately named boutique. The name itself evokes a peaceful ambiance! Sharing that vibe with their regulars, new friends, and discerning visitors to the Lake Norman area, makes any challenge of owning a small business totally worth the effort.

The perfect retail duo with complementary skills (Michelle, the creative side, Rich, the business side!), both love meeting new customers and making them feel right at home. You’d be hard pressed to find many Mooresville residents who don’t jump at the chance to relax and unwind at Sweet Grass, while soaking in the week’s new inventory.

The Sweet Grass team of 10 (varying by season) knows one not-so-secret fact about their inventory: You won’t find anything in the shop that Michelle and Rich don’t personally love themselves. The selection is ever-changing, and even the gourmet food products they sell are personal favorites.

“We believe in what we sell, and we encourage customers to always shop local,” says Michelle. “Our shoppers also know we are here to guide them in a purchase, or simply to catch up on family news,” says Michelle.

Some of those family details – including birthdays, anniversaries, and personal “wish-lists” end up in a notebook of customer favorites and requests. It’s the kind of extra customer service that means everything to a husband out for last-minute gift shopping for his wife, or children hoping the staff knows something special their mother has admired in the shop.

IT’S ALL IN THE GIVING

Gift sales is definitely the shop’s largest category – even hard-tofind gifts for men – and the incredible selection, at various price points, always provides stellar choices. Michelle and Rich enjoy focusing on locally owned businesses, and love showcasing other area vendors whenever possible. Gifts can be personalized (often while you wait) including items such as acrylic frames and party cups, and the store offers local resources for both etching, embroidery, and custom engraving. Have your heart set on monogramming the perfect blanket for a new baby? Personalization is as popular as ever, and makes a cherished new item even more timeless. And there’s no more welcome baby or toddler gift than the softest toy ever from JellyCats.

The Sweet Grass gift selection really is endless, with unique

luxuries for everyone on your list. If you’re thinking self-care, long-time employee JoAnna Palazzolo (and a personal lifesaver to Michelle and Rich during their Covid shutdown and reopening!) is creative in her own right, and one of the local artisans Sweet Grass proudly sells. Her company, Love Square One, makes the most beautiful, luxurious coconut wax, wood wick candles—perfect for a gift for girlfriends, and definitely include one for yourself.

For your favorite foodies or culinary enthusiasts, holiday gift choices abound, including wine cups and tumblers (Corkcicle is always in stock!), kitchen canisters and decorative cookware, cookbooks, cocktail mixes and decanters, as well as fun serving pieces from Happy Everything. Try the Poppy Popcorn made in Asheville (let’s just say their Bourbon Pecan should be

part of your personal indulgence this Christmas!) And Chapel Hill Toffee goes in everyone’s stocking!

More personal choices, you’ll find stylish jewelry including Meghan Browne and inspirational Lenny & Eva, locally crafted Bonnie Boardman pieces, and on trend jewelry for women of all ages from Simply Iris. Plus, the absolute most comfortable LKN attire from LKN Local apparel.

Art and other home novelties from Two’s Company and Sugarboo Designs make ideal presents for friends or neighbors, and if you have a four-legged friend’s stocking to fill, don’t leave the shop without several choices of Flynn’s Favs Dog Treats.

Above all, impeccable customer care is important to Michelle, Rich, and their entire staff, who know their regular

shoppers (and extended family!) are what have brought the business so much success. Gratefulness here is in plentiful supply!

Here’s a question for you: When is it a good time to shop local?

CONSIDER THESE ANSWERS & CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE:

• Every day.

• All the time.

• Right now.

• On days that end in Y.

• When the sky is blue.

In other words—it’s ALWAYS a great time to shop local. Recent years have reminded us of the importance of supporting our small business community. And moreover, local retailers have engaged their customers in new ways, making it easier than ever to shop small. If holiday shopping convenience is a priority for you – you have local options. Check your favorite stores’ websites and social media accounts. They’ve gotten quite savvy at making shopping fun and convenient!

But don’t just stay online! Go! Visit the store! Local retailers are thankful when you come see them. After all—as great as Amazon is—they aren’t going to ask you about your day…They aren’t going to help you choose the perfect gift for your motherin-law…Amazon isn’t going to ask how she liked it next time you see them…

Maybe you aren’t even gift-buying. Perhaps you need a new outfit for an interview or a first date! Amazon isn’t going to ask you how the interview went, nor will they make recommendations about how to accessorize. They definitely won’t direct you to the awesome new hairstylist who can help tame those locks!

Most of all, Amazon isn’t going to light up with a smile when they see you coming! And seriously—isn’t it nice to see someone who is excited to see you?

At the heart of shopping local—you’re investing in the community. YOUR community. You’re supporting your neighbors. And if you shop in our local establishments frequently enough—you’re supporting your friends.

Doing a small thing like shopping local matters. It’s a give and receive situation… They have curated unique products and services…And when we show up and shop with them, we’ve given them the best gift—our support. It’s a circle of giving that makes our community a stronger and better place.

So shop small. Shop local. Support your community.

Catchy Tips for Fishing

CATCHY TIPS FOR FISHING LAKE NORMAN

BEFORE VENTURING OUT TO FISH ON LAKE NORMAN TO CATCH THE “BIG ONE”, YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE NOTE OF THE TIPS OFFERED UP BY ONE OF THE MOST WELL-KNOWN ANGLERS IN THE AREA—CAPTAIN GUS.

Before venturing out to fish on Lake Norman to catch the “big one”, you might want to take note of the tips offered up by one of the most well-known anglers in the area.

CAPTAIN GUS

Gus Gustafson (Capt. Gus), a longtime owner of a fishing guide service known as Lake Norman Ventures, also known as “Fishing with Gus”, has helped people enhance their experience catching fish for many decades.

Gustafson’s fishing career spans over 60 years. At the lake’s inception, he watched the bulldozers knockdown trees along the Catawba River that eventually formed Lake Norman.

Even though it’s a man-made lake, the waters of it start in the Appalachian Mountains, wander along Interstate-40 creating Lake Norman, eventually. The water travels to South Carolina ending up at Charleston, South Carolina.

“I watched the developers flood the Catawba River to create Lake Norman,” Gustafson said. “In fact, in 1961, I was catching catfish, before they flooded it.”

Even though he knows where everything is under the waters of Lake Norman, fish patterns can change, he said.

“You have to stay on top of your game if you are going to catch fish,” Gustafson said. And the more you fish and the more places you try, the better fisherman you are going to be.”

HISTORY OF LAKE NORMAN FISHING

For the first ten years, the fishing on Lake Norman was pretty good. Just about anybody that wanted to catch fish could do so. As the population on the lake matured, it got tougher to catch fish.

“All of a sudden, it took people that really understood fishing to be able to catch a lot,” Gustafson said.

He added, “The more you know about the individual species, habitat, spawning and eating patterns of the fish, the more you will know about fishing in Lake Norman.”

Because developers bulldozed all of the topsoil, as a result there are no weeds in Lake Norman.

So, there is no grass for fish to hide in. That is

Gustafson offers guided fishing tours at FishingWithGus.com. Holiday shoppers can find a Christmas gift idea such as a guided fishing trip on that website. For more fishing tips, Capt. Gus can be reached at gus@ lakenorman.com. He also answers phone calls at 704-617-6812.

FIVE LAKE NORMAN FISHING TIPS

To help people fish this lake, Gustafson says he tells folks that in order to catch fish on Lake Norman you have to learn where the fish are feeding. How do you do that? It all starts with a topographical map. Here are the top tips the veteran angler offers up for our readers.

First off, if you don’t know anything about fishing, fish docks, lake points, and any channel or shoal markers on the lake. All are set in 10 feet of water and are adjacent to deep water. Also, watch for seabirds diving for bait fish. The birds tell you exactly where the fish are without the use of a fish finder.

Use a topographical map to identify the lake’s creek channels, river channels, and old roadbeds. The fish use these pathways as their interstate highways and secondary roads much like humans travel. Where a creek channel or landmass comes to a point, that’s where the fish come up and feed, go back into the river and move on. Also, learn to fish edges, ledges and drop-offs. The map tells you where all of these spots are located.

Slowdown your boat and your bait. Some boats go 80 mph. “I don’t know a single fish that can swim that fast,” Gustafson laughed. A fast boat tends to make people fish fast. The average bass swims about 10 miles per hour (mph). Use lures that ‘match the hatch’, meaning lure colors that are the same as the color of the fish. Most Lake Norman fish are gray, silver or black in color. In addition, dominant colored lures such as blue and green are also effective.

For newcomers, study the maps, get on the lake with somebody else, and watch where other people are fishing. If they are in a bass boat more than likely they are bass fishing. If they are in an aluminum jon boat more than likely they are fishing for crappie or white perch. And, if they are pulling lures behind the boat they are angling for catfish or trolling for hybrid-striped bass. So, circle these spots on your map. Fish go back to their same spots all of the time.

The best time of the day to fish is between one-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunrise. This is when the largest amount of fish are caught. On a cloudy day that timeframe lasts longer. Don’t go fishing on the weekends and during a full moon.

That’s an impressive trio of opportunities for families, who can experience the exciting world of the performing arts together.

“We believe exposure to live theatre is a life-transforming experience, and we seek to provide diverse quality programming to the community at a reasonable cost,”says Cathy Banner, Executive Director. With seven Main Stage productions and two smaller Black Box Theatre productions each season, families can fully engage in the many perks of having live theatre in their community and enjoy the fun of participating in play productions together.

The Main Stage productions include one allyouth show, and at least one family show with roles available for all ages! Non-traditional, diverse casting is also encouraged in all theatre productions, and each of those presentations takes place at the group’s state-of-the-art facilities at the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton. While collaborating with the City of Newton, the Green Room Theatre also presents Shakespeare in the Park in the late summer or early fall, and hosts a variety of “field trip” opportunities for children during the school year.

Then there’s education—where The Green Room also stands above the crowd! The group offers weekly after-school acting classes for grades K-12 each semester, featuring a variety of topics. “Sprouts” is a program designed for preschoolers ages three to five, and the class line-up also includes “Limitless Theatre for Exceptional Actors” for young adults with special needs. For summertime fun – and learning! – there are week-long summer Shakespeare drama camps for youth, and last August, the group held its first-ever Musical Theatre camp. With heartfelt thanks to a grant from the United Arts Council of Catawba County, another series of classes and

workshops for adults will take place during the current season. Among those will be a special effects makeup workshop, and an improv and comedic timing workshop. So, moms and dads, time to revisit those acting dreams!

As part of The Green Room, a troupe of adult actors known as The Green Bean Players presents classic fairy tales, folk stories, and fables, perfect for ages kindergarten through sixth grade, and they tour each summer throughout Catawba county and the surrounding areas. Over the past 20 years, these productions, as well as several other shows each season, have been offered to area students as school field trips. The troupe is thrilled to provide this opportunity to attend live theatre to so many local children who might not otherwise have that experience.

For the 2021-2022 season, total participation among all the exceptional programs of The Green Room surpassed 28,000, and all signs point to 2023 being their busiest and most successful performing season yet!

View from the Lake Bill Norberg: True Life Inspiration!

In November, Bill celebrated his 100th birthday, with a festive gathering of friends and family at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, where he has been a member for many years. Bill is quick to add he’s always been active in his church, doing a bit of everything except preaching!

Arriving at this 100th milestone has been humbling for Bill, and maybe a bit of a surprise.

“I cannot visualize myself being 100 years old,” he laughs. “I don’t feel it, and don’t intend to act it!”

Having lived at the lake for 42 years, there’s certainly evidence of what we all know about lake life. The natural flow of the water is the key to relaxation! Bill officially retired in 1984, and says he has taken things very easy, only doing what he really wants to do. During those early retirement years he wasn’t hard to find!

“My biggest joy was going out on the lake during the week when no one else was there,” says Bill. “I’d take my sailboat or my homemade canoe, a portable radio, and a magazine, and I was in heaven!”

Through the years, Bill has also stayed active doing interviews with schools and civic organizations regarding service in World War II, as well as attending veterans’ and Navy functions.

“I served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, from start to finish, aboard the aircraft carrier the USS ENTERPRISE,” says Bill. “I saw much action.”

Of course, he does credit good genes as well for his 100 years and

the wonderful, lifelong friends he’s made at church and through the American Legion and the Lion’s Club.

“Life is really worth living when you have good friends!” says Bill, lending sage advice.

Bill also proudly talks about his two sons, one daughter, 11 grandchildren, and 28 great- grandchildren, some of whom live nearby and are always there when he needs a hand.

Cherishing so many memories through the years, Bill does enjoy telling a story or two.

“In the 1930s I lived in Massachusetts, near a Finnish community, where a dance band named The Blue Jackets often played. I created my own dance to The Blue Jackets theme song, and have still been known to show that off occasionally!”

Now a resident of The Dorchester & Manor retirement community in Pineville, he’s enjoyed getting back into a favorite hobby: creative writing! Bill says the weekly Friday classes at the community center are great for keeping inspired, and he is frequently found at his computer – creating and telling stories, as he has since first starting writing in the seventh grade!

Keeping yourself surrounded by best friends and creative interests seems like excellent life advice. And, of course, always with a view of the lake!

WORLD CUP SOCCER

Okay, I know you just had a huge binge at the end of November. You consumed so much that you became numb and probably fell asleep.

No, I’m not talking about the Thanksgiving meal; I’m talking about watching football. If you’re a sports fan (and even if you’re not), your Thanksgiving meal was likely accompanied by football from noon (looking at you, Detroit Lions) through the afternoon (that’s you, Dallas Cowboys) all the way to midnight. The Friday and Saturday after seeing you gorge on college football’s rivalry week games, and Sunday into Monday brought the weekly slate of NFL games.

Football gluttony! (I admit—guilty as charged.)

However, this month of this year, we turn our attention from football to futbol. In the U.S., we call it soccer, but in the rest of the world, it is known as futbol, or—wait for it—“the beautiful game.” When it comes to the most popular sport in the world, it’s no contest: American football finishes a distant second to the game you actually play with your feet.

The men’s World Cup is played every four years and has been since 1930. (The ninth women’s World Cup will play in 2023.) Nations compete fiercely to host the World Cup, with Qatar winning the bid to become the first Arab nation ever to host. Hosting involves building or retrofitting large

stadium venues. Matches become one of the toughest tickets in the world—and the host nation automatically makes the field. Hosting is not without controversy, as there are often allegations of bid-rigging and a track record of labor abuses in host nations. Expect some legitimate protests, and headsup: the U.S., along with Canada and Mexico, is slated to host the 2026 tournament.

HERE ARE A FEW FAST FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD CUP:

THIRTY-TWO TEAMS have been competing for two years to qualify (the 2026 field expands to 48).

“GROUP PLAY” features eight pods of four teams. Winners of the pods go on to a single-elimination playoff. The most difficult of these pods is invariably labeled the “GROUP OF DEATH.” Dramatic, just like futbol itself.

Normally the cup is played in June-July, but the desert heat of Qatar has pushed it to NOVEMBER 20-DECEMBER 18 , an unprecedented shift.

It’s a bit of a stereotype, but STYLES OF PLAY can reflect cultural norms. Latin American teams can play an improvisational

style featuring individual brilliance and flair, whereas European teams tend to play a very structured, organized style of futbol.

FUTBOL FEATURES A DIFFERENT VOCABULARY: What Americans call uniforms are now “kits;” the field is the “pitch.”

THERE ARE UNIQUE CUSTOMS:

Players walk onto the field holding the hands of children. Faking injury is generally accepted as part of the sport. I used to mock this one, until I remembered how much I watched and enjoyed professional ‘rasslin’ when I was growing up. Now, I’m used to seeing a player who has been slightly tripped to look like he’s been taken down by enemy fire, then be carried off on a stretcher and return to play within about 30 seconds, as if the whole thing never happened.

So, if you’ve never watched soccer/futbol, grab a knowledgeable fan (friend, kid, grandkid) and watch together. If you are already a fan of the World Cup, as I am, prepare for some hard decisionvs. Personally, I have tickets to the UNC-State football game, which is scheduled at the same exact time as the U.S.-England World Cup match.

These things call for prayer!

There’s nothing like a slow cooked ham when the holidays roll around. This is a delicious recipe to feed a large crowd for a holiday party, a family gathering, or any occasion that you want to impress guests. Most of the spiral cut hams from the grocery store are pretty large so expect a lot of leftovers or have plenty of people to feed when you cook this!

With this recipe I typically cook on a pellet smoker, so I can set it and forget it while preparing the rest of the food for the perfect holiday meal. But, you can also cook this on a low heat grill or even in your oven.

Smoked Spiral Ham

• What you’ll want to get at the store is a Bone-In Spiral Cut ham. Depending on how many mouths you have to feed or leftovers you want - pick the right size ham: estimate about ¾-1lb per person. They come fully cooked so all you’re doing in the smoker (or cooking device of your choice) is reheating it, getting some smoke on it (if using a smoker), adding an awesome blend of seasonings, and covering in a sweet sauce to really take it to the next level.

• Preheat cooker to 250°

• Season ham all over with Spice and Tea Exchange®️ Cinnabar Smoke Spice Blend or if you can’t find this use your favorite pork seasoning/rub (think Sweet Heat seasoning that may have some cinnamon and brown sugar for the sweet and spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and/or marjoram for example.) You could also make your own by combining a Cup of Brown Sugar, ½ tsp mustard powder, ½ tsp cayenne pepper, ¼ tsp onion powder, 1 tsp paprika, and some cracked black pepper and salt to taste.

• Place your ham in the cooker on a pan and let cook for 3-4 hours, and you’ll want the middle of the thickest part of the ham to read 140° when done.

• Once your ham is temping around 130135° it’s time to add the sauce.

• For the sauce I love using a mixture of Texas Pete Honey Mustard and honey. Around 1.5 Cups of honey mustard and a few tablespoons of honey. If you’re not a big fan of honey/honey mustard you could also do a maple bourbon type of glaze.

• Glaze the sauce all over the ham with a brush, and turn your cooker up higher (broil for 2-3 minutes in an oven) or 400-500° degrees in a smoker for a few minutes to set the glaze.

• Pull the ham, let it rest 10 minutes before slicing. Slice a circle around the bone and it should easily fall apart, then slice through the ham along the seams which are the natural breaks (fat) in the ham.

One Man’s Perspective: Schooner

The 93-foot schooner, AMERICAN EAGLE, was built in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1930 as a fishing vessel. The schooner is a unique vessel with two or more masts, with the aft mast equal or higher than the foremast. Purchased by the current captain in 1984, she was refitted and launched in 1986 as a cruiser in the Windjammer fleet. AMERICAN EAGLE’S first big outing was the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. This was a huge celebration with more than 60,000 boats of every description in the harbor. It was special for us because we were there with our family of 11 aboard the 34-foot O’Day sloop for three days and three nights.

While we only saw the AMERICAN EAGLE, from afar back then, this past August we were privileged to see the EAGLE up close and personal. Marianne and I, along with her brother and our son and his wife, had the opportunity to spend four days and nights aboard this beautiful vessel. Marianne asked me what the agenda was for the trip, and I replied to her that it all depended on which way the wind blew.

O

in Rockland, Maine and sailed through the harbor and out into the open waters. It was heavenly! The captain got the passengers involved with raising all four sails and properly storing the lines. We carried a sailing dory (small, shallow lightweight boat) and a longboat as our dinghy. As we sailed, they served up a beautiful and delicious lunch. The schooner sailed well into the afternoon, and I couldn’t help but notice the crew, periodically, wetting down a FULL box of live lobsters!

Sure enough, we reached a remote island with a typical Maine beach, and the captain lowered one of his huge anchors with an all-chain rode. Rode, also known as anchor cable, is what connects your anchor to the boat. Someone came from ashore and pulled their longboat alongside the schooner and asked for six oarsmen. I was among the first group, and Marianne was the first of three “supervisors.” They had a crew member with an oar to help with the steering. Remember, we had six inexperienced rowers. We made our way to the beach where they had brought a big pot and plenty of wood. It didn’t take them long to get the fire going and the water boiling. In the

The night sky was magnificent without the city lights. The bright moon was waxing and would be full in three days.

Our family boarded the AMERICAN EAGLE on a Sunday after 6 p.m. and slept on board that night. We were given a tour of the vessel including the safety features. There were bunk beds in each cabin with a sink, mirror, and a 12volt car type connection to charge your phone. They pointed out the location of two heads, or ship’s toilets, and a single shower on board.

We awoke to a fantastic sunshine-filled day and the smell of fresh coffee and honey buns. All meals were served on deck, and the weather cooperated wonderfully. If there was inclement weather, then we would all have to gather in the galley. This would be cramped because we had a full ship of 26 passengers and six crew. By the way, the galley used a real wood-burning stove. It was very cozy and authentic!

We set sail the following morning from our dock

meantime, they made two more dinghy trips to get the rest of the passengers and crew.

Can you imagine 77 pounds of lobster prepared for you? It was the perfect way and place to eat lobster. Dinner included all the sides with corn on the cob and dessert. The little bit of leftover lobster would show up in tomorrow’s lunch salad. YUM!

The next day was similar, although without the lobsters, but they launched a sailing dinghy. This was a three-passenger gaff-rigged lapstrake dory. Lapstrake is a method of boat building where the edges of hull planks overlap each other. Marianne and I got in for a sail, but the wind makes its own decisions and died on us. We still had a ball that day!

The following day brought us to a new harbor and a new adventure. After anchoring among other boats, a green hull gaffed-rig Maine sloop was pointed out. They told us that she was 110 years old. Hard to believe, but we had anchored off the Wooden Boat School and the Magazine Wooden Boat location. All were looking forward to rowing ashore in the morning and taking a tour.

One other thing we have always loved about Maine is that the people you meet are different than our normal circle. They come from everywhere and may have made names for themselves in politics, government, education, or writing. They love the outdoors and are strong environmentalists. If you are together for four days on a 93-foot schooner, then you will get to know a lot of interesting folks. Very interesting and enjoyable!

We are sailors, and we loved our time sailing on the AMERICAN EAGLE schooner and working together to move a 43-ton vessel with two massive wooden masts, bigger than telephone poles with four sails, through the water to our goal. The night sky with the full moon was a perfect ending, and the food was first class. It was a FANTASTIC time that we will always treasure!

THE Reluctant Traveler

Somewhere along the line, my Christmas spirit seems to have hopped off the Santa Express without me realizing it. I still put up the tree and its familiar ornaments and lights, a crab pot Christmas tree twinkles outdoors, greenery adorns the house inside and out, and I tie red ribbons around the necks of my canvas Canada goose decoys, but as the holiday itself inches closer, I can barely detect a live coal in the holiday fire that once burned bright.

It wasn’t always like this. When my brother and I were young we were so exited on Christmas Eve that we took turns singing Christmas carols to each other in the room we shared until we fell asleep. Surely my parents were busy, otherwise how could they sleep through that racket? When my own daughter was young, I was a Christmas maniac, buying too much but enjoying her reactions all the same.

Oddly, I have no memories of any Christmas morning when I was a child. Not a one. And I find that disconcerting. I still have a few of the gifts I received—books (Chip Hilton and the Hardy Boys) and metal cars from train sets (plastic had not taken over the world 60-odd years ago). The actual hoopla of the mornings is gone though. I do have one photo that is framed by my bed of my brother and me on one of those mornings, each of us dressed in new cowboy outfits and packing cap pistols (surely you remember those), posing amid the debris of other opened gifts. Santa was generous that year when he was 5 and I was 7.

The only thing that dampened the day back then was that my brother Sam and I, in short order, would be hustled off to one set of grandparents or another. Not that we didn’t love our grandparents, but we wanted to remain with the treasures that Santa Claus had bestowed upon us. All of our wheedling and begging was to no avail. We never stopped trying, but all of our words and hopes landed on cold, barren ground.

The best part of the holiday for me was that, unless Christmas had fallen on a Saturday, my dad and I would be quail hunting the next day. When I was younger, I’d just tag along, but as I grew older, I joined the hunt and those days became memorable. Prior to the holiday, my dad and I had wandered the woods, either squirrel hunting or later looking for mistletoe to shoot from the tops of the trees for my mother to use as decoration.

By the time quail season opened, we had a good idea of where the birds were. In those days, the early to mid-1960s, it was a rare day when we couldn’t find bobwhites. The little brown and white birds were everywhere, often in places you would never think they would

be. I still feel sorry for people who have never been startled by the wing beats of a covey rise while they are walking a field, in the edge of the woods or someplace completely unexpected.

Often some of our neighbors joined us on our quail hunts, men named Malvin and Allan and Sweet, among others. (I can’t remember Sweet’s real name, but he blew in occasionally from Raleigh, stayed in a cabin and entertained people on a piano. He was a sophisticate by Granville County standards.)

Our lives, like those of other country people, were quiet, simple and routine, watching for the changing seasons, taking joy in them and what the outdoor life might bring. Christmas was the great change in the year, a time of excitement and anticipation, and yet I don’t remember the climax of the whole thing, the great unwrapping. I can picture it—a quick peek to check for snow, then Sam and I rushing into the living room with its awful 1950s burgundy walls (it must have been from an artistic phase of my mother). We stand for a few seconds, struck silent at the bounty, and then begin tearing open gifts.

Later we’d make the grandparents journey, as inevitable as no snow. Some people, I believe, are destined to travel on major holidays. I’ve always been one of those reluctant travelers. Perhaps it’s some preordained thing. I’m still holding on to the hope that one Christmas, just one, I can spend the entire day at home gazing at the tree. Maybe that’s what it will take to bring a Christmas snowfall.

NC STATE PARKS: STONE MOUNTAIN

“Nature itself is the best physician.”

As we continue our state park adventures, we arrive at Stone Mountain State Park that is divided between Wilkes and Alleghany counties of North Carolina. The stone mountain itself cannot be seen upon entering the park that shares its name, but the incredible 600-foot granite dome is well worth the visit. But this incredible stone dome is only one of the many scenic enticements that will demand your attention during your time at this must-visit state park. Stone Mountain State Park with its cascading waterfalls, meandering mountain streams, forests abundant with diverse wildlife, and scenic hiking trails are a few of the many reasons to make the trip.

BRIEF HISTORY

“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.”

NC State Park: Stone Mountain

According to NCpedia.org, the stone mountain within the park “is light gray, medium-grained biotite granite developed from magma several miles deep in the earth. As erosion removed the overlying granitic rock, the resulting release in pressure caused the rock mass to move upward and intrude into older surrounding rocks sometime during the mid-Paleozoic era, 200 million years ago. Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock within the park are similar in structure. The proximity of these plutonic features to the Blue Ridge escarpment is of unusual geologic interest. As a result. Stone Mountain was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1974.”

was donated, and its value was used as the state’s matching fund for grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Appalachian Regional Commission supporting purchase of the initial land for the park. Since then, Stone Mountain State Park has grown to become one of the largest units in the state parks system. Its combination of highly significant biologic, geologic, scenic, recreational, and archaeologic resources make it one of the premier units of the system.”

RECREATION

UNIQUE FEATURES

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

– LAO TZU

Although the 600-foot dome of Stone Mountain is an obvious unique feature, it is far from the only one. In addition to the significant scenic value of Stone Mountain, there is also Wolf Rock and Cedar Rock. The fact that you can rock climb and rappel in the winter, due to the south facing dome that has full sun all day making it quite warm, is quite an enticement for experienced climbers, although not recommended for beginners.

The state park website lists the numerous activities and amenities as:

CAMPING

• Tent sites (including backpacking sites) • Trailer and RV sites (some with electric and water hookups) • Group tent sites

Dump station

Showers

Firewood

ACTIVITIES

Hiking (20 miles)

Horseback riding (10 miles)

Picnicking

Rock climbing

AMENITIES

Amphitheater

Picnic shelters

Bathhouse

Horse trailer parking

Another unique feature of the park is its magnificent waterfalls. The park includes four major waterfalls: Stone Mountain Falls, 200 feet in height; Middle Falls, a series of low cascades; Lower Falls, 25 feet in height; and Widow’s Creek Falls. The northwestern vistas, a panoramic look at the Blue Ridge mountains, are the most scenic in the park.

AT THE END OF THE DAY

“Allow nature’s peace to flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.” – JOHN MUIR

Stone Mountain State Park has over 14,000 scenic acres to explore and enjoy with about 20 miles of moderate to strenuous hiking trails and 10 miles of horseback riding trails. You can also test your fly-fishing techniques with over 17 miles of designated trout waters.

Stone Mountain State Park is one of the largest parks in the state and one of my favorites in the NC park system. My hope is that you take the opportunity to visit this unique and amazingly beautiful state park and enjoy an unforgettable experience that will keep you coming back again and again.

NCpedia goes on to say that “long before becoming a state park, Stone Mountain was settled by families of English, German, Irish, French, and Scots-Irish descent who built the log homes, farms, mills, churches and schools needed for self-sufficient communities. A restored 19th century mountain community, the Hutchinson Homestead, is located within the park.”

“Stone Mountain State Park was established in 1969 when the efforts of local citizens led to the acquisition of 1,463 acres of land. Part of the land

Mountain State Park is located at 3042 Frank Parkway, Roaring Gap, NC 28668. Park, visitor center, and park office hours vary by month. For more information visit their website at NCParks.gov/state-parks/stonemountain-state-park or call (336) 957-8185.

SHARING Food, Hope, & Love

With hearts full of love, volunteers at the Lake Norman Food Mission feel they are feeding both body and soul, with their efforts to provide food to those in need.

An agency of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, and also a major ministry of Denver Wesleyan Church in Denver, NC, Senior Pastor Johnny Houser says his group is ever thankful to God for allowing them to be used for giving to others, especially during the holidays.

“We have 30 volunteers who are here at different times of the week, and several from other churches in the area who come and help,” he explains. “This goes along with our mission statement: ‘Love the Lord with all your heart, love your neighbor as yourself.’ We believe it is important to not only worship on Sunday, but to show our love to God and each other at all times.”

While their church is relatively small, Pastor Houser says volunteers see their group efforts

“The scheduling helps us plan, and make sure everyone receives some food,” says Pastor Houser. “We are giving out food three days a week for the first two weeks of the month, and two times a week the last two weeks of the month.”

Lake Norman Food Mission often distributes over 50,000 pounds of food per month, which can feed over 1,000 people.

“We started off 15 years ago in just a little closet here in the church, with a few canned goods just in case someone came around and needed food,” says Pastor Houser. “Over the years we built two rooms for a freezer and a refrigerator. As more and more people needed food, we started using classrooms to store canned goods.”

But with God’s blessing and overwhelming financial support from their congregation and the community, the mission recently began the grading process, preparing for a new 5,000-square-foot building—the new home for Lake Norman Food Mission.

as a blessing, because God provides everything they need to operate.

“We are thankful for the grocery stores that help us with food donations,” he adds. “We pick up at seven different stores each week, and at Second Harvest of Metrolina once a week (the organization is an approved agency with Second Harvest.) Individuals and other local organizations also donate food and money to help us provide for those in need, and we receive some funding through grants—but mostly from individuals who have a heart for helping.”

This devoted group serves a broad area on the western side of Lake Norman, and their number of families continue to grow. Some simply walk in seeking food assistance, and those who have been in once can make an appointment to come the next month.

Believing it is always a blessing to be a blessing, the group is always looking for new volunteers. If you are interested, send a message through the Denver Wesleyan Church Facebook page, email denverwesleyanchurch@gmail.com, or call and leave a message at 704-483-0469. Denver Wesleyan Church is located at 2381 N. Highway Business 16, Denver, NC, and volunteers work on Monday mornings from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and Wednesday afternoon from 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES…

A SPICY PAST!

No confectionary treat symbolizes the holiday season quite like the spicy, candy-laden, edible gingerbread house. The modern-day U.S. Christmas tradition of gathering friends and family members to assemble and decorate these fantastical houses actually has roots (pardon the pun) in China. The ginger root srigavera (Sanskrit) is translated “root shaped like a horn” - a fitting name for its unusual appearance. It was first cultivated in ancient China about 5,000 years ago as a tonic to treat countless illnesses including common digestive ailments, a practice many in the healthcare industry still use today to reduce nausea. From there, ginger made its way along trade routes to India, Asia, and Africa, and by the 1st century, it arrived in Europe. Food historians generally agree that it was the Greeks who discovered the spice’s usefulness as a preservative, but there is great debate about who lays claim to the first known gingerbread recipe. Some say credit goes to the Greeks around 2400 AD, while others insist it originated in France in 992 AD. Interestingly, the term gingerbread initially meant preserved ginger and did not apply to the scrumptious desserts we enjoy today.

Reportedly, the popularity of the ginger spiced biscuit-walled houses (lebkuchenhäuschen) soared on the heels of the (not-so-Christmassy) Grimms’ original fairytale of Hansel and Gretel, in which the little boy and girl stumbled upon a house made entirely of treats deep in the forest. Exactly how the link was established between this fairytale where two children almost got cooked and eaten by the witch until they turned the tables and cooked her instead, and the beloved Christmas tradition of decorating gingerbread houses, remains unclear.

Gingerbread houses arrived in the New World with the German settlers, and Americans have been practicing increasingly complex and recordbreaking feats of confectionary engineering ever since. The former gingerbread fairs of Europe in the Middle Ages paved the way for our “sweet and spicy” U.S. gingerbread house competitions of today. In 1992, a small group of locals from Asheville, N.C., built a few gingerbread houses to usher in Christmas at Grove Park Inn as a one-time endeavor, but three decades later it has become one of the nation’s most celebrated and competitive holiday events. The Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, holds

Around the turn of the 15th century, German bakers began making hard gingerbread cookies that were often shaped like animals, kings and queens, gilded with gold leaf. These heavily adorned gingerbread treats, known as “fairings'', were served at medieval fairs across Europe and became synonymous with all things “fancy and over the top.” However, it would be another 2,000 years before the ornamented gingerbread houses we are familiar with came onto the scene in Germany.

the title of the “nation’s biggest gingerbread house.” This nearly 2,500 square feet marvel is 60 feet in length, 42 feet wide, and over 20 feet tall at its highest point. To put this into perspective, the house (which required a building permit) consists of 1,800 pounds of butter, 1,080 ounces of ground ginger, 7,200 eggs, 7,200 pounds of flour, 3,000 pounds of brown sugar, 225 gallons of molasses, and 22,304 pieces of candy for decoration. Wow!

Gingerbread Houses...A Spicy Past!
“When they came nearer, they saw that the house was built of gingerbread, and roofed with cakes, and the window was of transparent sugar.”

CARING FOR KIDS FACING CANCER

AS ITS CATCHY NAME SUGGESTS, THE COOL KIDS CLUBHOUSE IN HUNTERSVILLE IS OPEN TO THE MOST INCREDIBLE KIDS AROUND. IT’S A MISSION HONORING KIDS WHO ARE FIGHTING CANCER IN THE VERY BRAVEST WAY!

Events and outreach coordinator, Rachel Armstrong, shares how the Clubhouse smooths the road traveled by these children, in a loving, fun, relaxed environment. The goal is to also serve them emotionally, socially, and academically – including free online tutoring for those who have missed school due to treatments.

“We currently serve over 200 families in North Carolina,” explains Rachel. “We know children require support during and after a cancer diagnosis, so they don’t need to be currently undergoing treatment to be a Cool Kid. We ask that children only have proof of a diagnosis, whether it be past or present, from a provider or a social worker.”

WHAT MAKES COOL KIDS SO EXCEPTIONAL?

“We continue to serve our children throughout their entire cancer journey.” says Rachel. “We serve them during and after their diagnosis and treatment, which sets us apart. Most organizations don’t continue to support pediatric oncology patients once they are deemed cancer-free. People don’t realize the lingering side effects that come with a cancer diagnosis, even for the family.”

“The care packages always put smiles on the kids’ faces, filling them with excitement and hours of fun. It warms our hearts to see our kids happy and playing together. We are so grateful for [Cool Kids Clubhouse’s] support during this grueling battle.”

64 | lkn-magazine.com

There’s no age limit for their programs, so “Once a Cool Kid, always a Cool Kid!”

Originally founded in Maryland in 2006 by Chris Federico in honor of his mother, the Cool Kids Clubhouse opened in North Carolina in 2020, in honor of Olympic gold medalist and now Board Member, Dan Jansen. Jansen lost his sister Jane to leukemia in 1990, and founded his own Foundation in her honor.

One favorite tradition at the Clubhouse is Smile Celebrations, led by Smile Coordinator Terry Flowers. A “Smile Celebration” might commemorate a birthday, graduation, or end-of-chemo celebration, and drop-off days are scheduled periodically to give Cool Kids parents a much-deserved day off.

“We know a cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect the child, but the whole family,

including siblings,” explains Rachel. “Our monthly movie nights can really range from playing board games to making crafts, depending on what mood the kids are in!”

For a wonderful way to support these amazing kids, consider donating to their “Smile Boxes.” These are care packages the group uses for Smile Celebrations, and also sends to children in local hospitals. Kids have the opportunity to share their favorite color, movie, TV show, sport, gaming system or other favorite toy, so each Smile Box is personalized for a specific child.

Donate through the website at CoolKidsCampaign.org/North-CarolinaClubhouse or through their Amazon Wish List, via the Cool Kids website. Drop-off donations are accepted at the Clubhouse in Huntersville.

You can also complete a volunteer interest form on the website. The group hosts dozens of events throughout the year, ranging from those Smile Celebrations, to community awareness and fundraising events, and none are possible without the community’s support! Volunteers must be 16 years or older, but younger volunteers are permitted if a parent or guardian above the age of 18 is also present.

The Cool Kids Clubhouse is located at 9601 Holly Point Drive, Suite 102, in Huntersville, NC. 704-997-5701.

SIMPLE PLEASURES:

LIVE MUSIC & THE BEST CRAFT BEER AROUND!

If you’re a fan of craft beer and amazing wine, Novel Taproom in Newton should be your official new gathering spot with friends! What sweetens the experience is their reputation as the best small live music venue around, focusing on regional and national acts, as well as some of the best local bands.

Novel Taproom opened in June 2020, right in the middle of Covid, but the idea had been swirling in the heads of owners Jeff and Sandy Allen for quite awhile.

“I had this idea for the last nine years, but couldn’t find the right spot in Charlotte,” explains Jeff. Looking to market and support local breweries, he expanded his location search to the suburbs of Cornelius, Matthews, and Huntersville. But four years ago he was visiting Hickory for a business meeting and stopped in Newton to have lunch.

“I started snooping around town and found the old fire station in Newton might be available,” says Jeff. “But while negotiating with the city on that location, I was even more struck by the building next door.”

It was indeed a process to seal the deal, but he was finally able to acquire the charming building that has become home to Novel.

“The incredible history and ambiance of the building makes it unique,” says Jeff. “And not only do we have the best selection of craft beer in the area, but we have separated ourselves by the quality of live music we host every week.”

Jeff and his staff thoroughly (and enthusiastically!) research every beer on tap, and they love having the chance to promote lesser-known breweries in the area. He says the menu is on a constant rotation, giving customers lots of options.

“We also include many regional and national breweries,” says Jeff. “We have a total of 30 taps at the moment, and put up two to eight new beers every day. When our outside bar is complete, we will have a total of 46 taps.”

In case you’re wondering, Jeff’s favorite is Reptar Juice New England IPA from 26 Acres Brewery in Charlotte, which he brought over when Novel Taproom opened. And it’s the all-time number one selling IPA there now – and one you definitely need to sample!

Since nothing goes better with a good cold beer than live music, Novel Taproom offers just that every Saturday, and on at least two or three Thursdays a month. Sometimes the schedule varies just right, to include music each weekend night! The diverse musical lineup appeals to a range of tastes: plenty of classic rock, 90s rock, country, outlaw country, blues, and bluegrass. Jeff is also looking to add a new artist showcase during the week, and hopefully, a jazz series once football season winds down.

A rotation featuring several of the area’s best food trucks also greets customers three to four nights a week, completing the perfect ambiance for mingling or simply relaxing. Gather with friends at The Novel Taproom, located at 12 N. Ashe Avenue, Newton, NC, 704-576-0603. Hours are Monday through Thursday 3:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., Friday 3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m., Saturday 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Visit them online at thenoveltaproom. com and on Instagram @noveltaproom for specials, food truck information, and musical performance updates!

Relishing Retirement: The Case in Favor of a Busy Retirement

THE CASE IN FAVOR OF A BUSY RETIREMENT

A recent study found that 83% of retirees want to engage in activities that promote health and well-being. These folks are definitely on the right track because an active lifestyle is proven to reap physical, emotional, and social benefits.

REGULAR PHYSICAL EXERCISE HELPS TO IMPROVE YOUR:

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT CHOLESTEROL & BLOOD PRESSURE BONE DENSITY & STRENGTH MUSCLES & JOINTS IMMUNE SYSTEM MEMORY & MENTAL ACUITY SLEEP OVERALL MOOD & SENSE OF WELL BEING

Plus, when you “get out there,” whether it is to the gym or simply for a stroll around the block, you can create and nurture social connections—strangers, neighbors, the Amazon driver, maybe even the local dog walker.

But not everyone has a lifelong passion or dream to pull off the shelf, dust down, and embrace. In fact, a recent study found that while 92% of retirees prefer a less structured life, they also want to pursue activities and experiences that give them a sense of fulfillment. If that sounds like you, it may be time to embark on a process of discovery and possibilities you may not have considered.

ACTIVE PURSUITS

TRAVEL : Which may simply mean taking the next several months to explore what’s in your own backyard. Day trips and weekends may be just enough to stimulate your senses and enrich your experience.

ARTS & CRAFTS: Tap into what your crafty friend knows how to do and learn from them. Who knows? That wreath you make may bring you a fresh sense of accomplishment and rekindled creativity.

GARDENING: Join a club or tag along with a green-thumbed neighbor who would love to introduce you to their passion.

BIRDING: Put up a feeder, add a birdbath, then grab your binoculars and watch the magic in your own backyard.

GENEALOGY: Find out more about who you are. You are likely to find some surprises and answers as you study your family tree.

The evidence in favor of a retirement filled with ample movement is irrefutable. But there is more to “busy” than exercise alone. Many retirees want to embrace the activities and experiences they didn’t have time for during their working years. That makes sense because when we follow our hearts, we are much more likely to land in a life that brings us contentment, happiness, and joy. And isn’t that really the point?

When a friend closed her small business after three decades at the helm, she decided to pursue a lifelong dream to work in fashion. Now, while working part-time for a high-end retailer, she is also traveling and redecorating her home to suit her current lifestyle. Her “busy” translates into feeling fully engaged with a life she loves.

LANGUAGE: Give your brain a workout as you study a new language.

BOOK CLUB: If you like to read, this one is a no-brainer!

SET UP A STAND: Whether it’s at the Farmers’ or Flea Market, meet interesting people while making some cash.

TAKE ONLINE SURVEYS: Another one that keeps your mind active while keeping you engaged in current topics.

TEACH, TUTOR, MENTOR: Give back what you know. The reward is priceless.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT EXERCISE. • • • • • • • • •

FOR THE LOVE of THE LAKE!

It turns out two friends with a shared passion can create quite a buzz and so can their tee shirts!

“Anne McGraw and I started our business, LKN Local, because we were hard-pressed to find Lake Norman apparel that we wanted to wear ourselves!” says co-owner Larisa Kamp. “We wanted soft, flattering pieces that were cute and classic.”

The two friends checked their own personal favorite shirts, and since Bella + Canvas immediately stood out as a brand they both loved that’s where they started. As they have added other apparel companies to their product line, the focus remains on quality and comfort.“We also love fabrics that are garment-dyed, or vintage/ beach washed so they feel soft and lived-in,” says Anne. Who can argue with that?

This is a small business that prides itself on being designed and printed by LKN locals, for LKN locals!

“Anne and I became fast friends in 2007 when we lived in Maryland and were teachers at the same school,” says Larisa. (She taught middle school art and Anne taught second grade and technology). Nearly 15 years later, they are family for sure.

inviting. It’s a place equally perfect to relax and unwind or party until you are sunburned and out of beer!”

Echoing the same thoughts as most Lake Norman residents, there’s nothing better than a sunny afternoon boating with friends, or even some quiet time paddle boarding right at sunset. Something about the entire Lake Norman area and its surrounding communities evokes a true southern hospitality, a feeling Larisa and Anne hope shines through in their merchandise. Their business is a labor of love, and their talents are a perfect match.

love talking to people as they shop the booth, to see what styles and colors are most sought after.

It’s always been important to these creative entrepreneurs to keep their operations as local as possible, and while they aren’t currently able to print their own apparel, they sought out several women-owned businesses in Mooresville and Cornelius who source and screen print for them.

For both Larisa and Anne, being best friends and business partners is a blessing. “It never feels like work when we are together, even if it’s folding, tagging, or quality control,” says Larisa. Seeing friends and neighbors wearing their tee shirts out and about in the community is also thrilling!

Larisa, the artist, might sketch out a design idea on paper, then Anne, the graphic designer, will digitize that idea.“We then work together on composition and fonts, until we get something that’s just right,” says Larisa. “This part of our work is really fun!”

The two want their designs to appeal to anyone

This artistic duo truly loves living near the lake, and when thinking of a way to give back, they searched for organizations who were deeply committed to protecting the water and wildlife of Lake Norman. The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation and the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists were a perfect fit, and both receive a portion of their proceeds.

“Our shirts not only look good, but they also do good!” says Anne.

LKN Local apparel and home products such as fine art prints, note cards, and ornaments can be purchased via their website, LKN-Local.com, and assorted apparel and products are also available at many Lake Norman area retailers. Shipping is always available, along with free local delivery around Lake Norman.

THE LAST WORD ON LIFE AT THE LAKE

COOLER DAYS, LONGER CAMPFIRES

One of the great joys of shorter, cooler days is that it makes sense to have a campfire. In the summer when it’s still 80°F at night it’s not quite as pleasant. I don’t let that stop me from enjoying a roaring fire by the lake, but even I can’t argue with the logic that as it gets colder and colder campfires actually start to make sense.

I grew up in a tradition of large campfires. I can remember my uncles egging each other on to throw more and more wood on the fire until the thing got big enough to roast a cow. I grew up in Wisconsin, so that wasn’t entirely outside of the realm of possibility. At the very least everyone at those get togethers would have to pull their chairs 20 feet back while trying to cool their burnt shins.

My friend Russel once insisted on throwing his entire Christmas tree into the fire during his Fourth of July party. You can imagine how dry it was. I told him three times that it was a bad idea because those things explode into a fireball when they’re that dry. After my third warning, when he would hear no logic, I decided to step out of his way. If he wanted to turn his patio into an inferno, who was I to stop him? I only asked him to wait for a second so I could get my camera ready.

S’mores are one of the least practical campfire traditions. I’ve never seen a child successfully make one. Their process always includes waving a flaming marshmallow around on the end of a

stick, often while standing within inches of other kids also waving flaming blobs of gelatin. Then they declare that they are uninterested in the marshmallow after it’s extinguished and instead, they just want to eat the chocolate and find other things they can start on fire.

The campfire smoke is a factor, of course. It hangs around in the jacket you wore by the fire for a few days, to say nothing of getting it blasted in your eyes. At summer camp they’d tell us to say “white rabbit” three times in a row and by then the smoke would no longer be in your eyes. I can confirm that the only age group dumb enough to believe and try this out is 6th grade boys.

People in that same age group are also handy for foraging for more sticks to throw on the fire once it starts to die down. Even though they manage to find lots of tree roots instead of sticks and often trip and fall down right next to the fire while carrying armloads of sticks, it beats having to get up myself to forage myself.

I seldom need to buy firewood. Not because I’m cutting down trees and splitting wood. I wish. No, we occasionally rent our house out when no one is using it. People on vacation always overbuy two items: beer and firewood. One of the great ancillary benefits of renting out your house is coming home to a refrigerator packed with beer and a big pile of firewood in your garage. Cheers to campfire season.
