an you believe it’s already August? It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming sunshine, vacations and long lake days, and now we’re shopping for school supplies and settling back into routines. I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and found time to make a few special memories along the way.
Before I jump into this month’s issue, I wanted to share something that’s brought me so much joy. I hope you’re enjoying our ASK BETTY BEE column (see page 25). For my July birthday, I decided to treat myself to something a little different... an organization project with BEE ORGANIZED LAKE NORMAN. I can honestly say it has been life-changing for Tim and me. Our home feels calmer, more functional and so much easier to enjoy. I can’t wait for our family and friends to see the transformation, and I know the grand pups will be over-the-moon with all their newfound space to play! Sometimes the best gifts aren’t things at all, but the peace and joy they continue to bring long after your birthday has passed.
businesses that make Lake Norman such a special place. Speaking of schools, one of the things I love most about the Lake Norman community is the way we come together to help our neighbors. As students head back to the classroom, many local children in our community will face food insecurity on the weekends. That’s why I’m excited to share BAGS OF HOPE’S 6TH ANNUAL BACK-TOSCHOOL FOOD DRIVE. Turn to page 56 to learn how you can help, whether it’s filling a grocery bag with much-needed food items, organizing your neighborhood to participate, dropping off donations or making a monetary contribution. Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, helps ensure a child has food to eat when they’re away from school. Together, we truly can make a difference.
As summer winds down and a new school year begins, we wish all of the students, teachers and school staff an amazing year ahead. Whether you’re sending a child off to kindergarten, moving one into college or simply enjoying a little more quiet around the house, here’s to new beginnings, exciting opportunities and another wonderful season in our Lake Norman community. Thank you, as always, for supporting the local businesses that make this magazine possible. Every time you shop locally, dine locally or recommend a hometown business, you’re helping strengthen the community we all love. Enjoy these last days of summer, and here’s to making August a month of kindness, connection and community. Happy reading, and I’ll see you in September!
This month’s issue is packed with inspiring stories, delicious recipes, spotlights on local small business owners and so much more. One story I am especially excited to share is our cover feature on JOSH GRAHAM, his family and his incredible team. I won’t spoil the story (it begins on page 28), but after years of hard work, perseverance and unwavering support from the community, JOSH’S FARMERS MARKET has finally found its forever home. It’s one of those stories that reminds us why we love sharing the people behind the

EQUIPPED FOR THE FALL GROWING SEASON By MARTIE EMORY
I
f lawn renovation is inching its way to the top of your to-do list, you’re right on time this month!
Late summer and early fall are ideal times for both homeowners and landscaping professionals to begin preparing their lawns for the fall growing season. Whether you’re renovating a backyard lawn or maintaining much larger commercial properties, Cooke Rentals offers professional-grade lawn renovation equipment to help homeowners and contractors achieve healthier, greener lawns this fall.
EARTH & TURF 410SP & 415SP Topdressers are used to spread compost, sand or topsoil evenly over the lawn – and these make an excellent companion to the aeration and over-seeding processes. Top-dressers help improve seed germination and overall lawn health – and are ideal for leveling or lawn renovation projects.
“Our most popular rentals during this time of year are our professional lawn aerators, along with the necessary equipment used for overseeding and topdressing,” shares Tyler Cooke. If you’re a novice lawn owner, you’ll soon be learning the finer points of how core aeration helps relieve soil compaction, allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root system, while creating the perfect environment for over-seeding. Following that aeration with both topdressing and proper fertilization will help you achieve thicker, healthier lawns throughout the entire fall season. Cooke Rentals offers professional-grade equipment for every step of the lawn renovation process, even making it easy to achieve professional results at home What are the key lawn care rental products at Cooke Rentals that you need to know?
STINGER GT30 (30”) STAND-ON CORE AERATOR (the company’s most popular request) is a professional stand-on core aerator with a 30” working width and seed hopper attachment. It’s ideal for both residential and commercial properties, as it relieves overly compacted soil, allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the root system. It also creates ideal seed-to-soil contact for over-seeding. STINGER 36” STAND-ON CORE AERATOR Professional is perfect for bigger properties that need larger, more full productivity, with professional stand-on operation and seed hopper attachment. This product is excellent for larger residential and commercial lawns.
RYAN 19” WALK-BEHIND AERATOR is a compact design for smaller-sized home lawns and gated backyards. It is easy to transport and operate, yet produces professionalquality core aeration.

MEG BROWN HOME FURNISHINGS BRINGS DECADES OF EXPERIENCE TO MOORESVILLE By CAROLYN SHORE-PETERSON
S
ome businesses begin with a business plan. Others begin with a lifetime of experience and a shared dream.
For Meg and Davin Brown, the foundation for Meg Brown Home Furnishings was built long before they ever opened their first showroom in Advance. Together, they combined generations of furniture knowledge, creative design experience and a willingness to work harder than anyone else to create a business centered on one simple goal: helping people love where they live. BUILT ON EXPERIENCE AND HARD WORK Furniture has always been part of Davin Brown’s life. He grew up learning the business while working for his grandfather at Hendricks Furniture before later joining his uncle at Boyles Furniture. Meg brought a different perspective,
22 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM
designing furniture settings for advertising photography featured in national magazines. “We thought it would be a good combination to open a furniture store,” Meg said. It proved to be exactly that. Those first years required determination and sacrifice. The Browns handled nearly every aspect of the business themselves. Both worked the showroom floor, while Davin personally made deliveries until the company grew enough to hire additional employees. “It was a lot of hard work from the start,” recalled Meg. That willingness to do whatever needed to be done established the work ethic that continues to define the company today.
As the Lake Norman community continues to grow, the Browns say they’re eager to learn alongside their new customers and continue evolving to meet local needs. A TEAM APPROACH While beautiful furniture may attract customers, relationships are what keep them coming back. The Browns have always believed that creating a warm, friendly, low-pressure atmosphere is just as important as offering quality furnishings. “We always try to create a warm, friendly, lowpressure environment,” Meg stated. “We hope we have done that at our new location.” That same collaborative spirit extends behind the scenes. “We always try to work as a team. Many times collaborating on projects helps bring more ideas and an overall better result,” said Meg. Whether helping someone furnish an entire home or simply select the perfect accent piece, every client benefits from the combined experience and creativity of the entire design team. LOOKING AHEAD Although the Mooresville showroom is still new, the Browns are excited about becoming part of the Lake Norman community while continuing the customer-first philosophy that has guided them since opening their doors.
GROWING WITHOUT LOSING THEIR VALUES
For Meg and Davin, success has never been measured simply by the furniture they sell, but by the relationships they build and the homes they help create.
As customer needs evolved, so did the business. The Browns began by carrying numerous smaller furniture brands before expanding into many of the industry’s most respected names. They also broadened their offerings, adding an Outlet and Sleep Shop in 2020 and introducing an Outdoor Furniture Patio showroom in 2025.
After decades in business, their mission remains refreshingly simple: treat customers fairly, listen carefully and always do the right thing. Sometimes, that’s the most timeless design of all.
Despite those additions, one thing has never changed. “We just try to make the customer happy. Some are easier than others, but we always want to be fair to the customer and do the right thing,” Meg commented. That philosophy has earned the trust of generations of homeowners who continue returning for new homes, remodels and growing families. A NATURAL NEXT STEP For years, expanding beyond Advance wasn’t part of the Browns’ plans. That changed after a conversation with a longtime customer from Mooresville who encouraged them to look at the tremendous growth taking place around Lake Norman. The location made sense. It was close enough to
be supported by their existing warehouse while allowing them to introduce their brand to an entirely new community. Knowing the Mooresville showroom would be considerably smaller than the flagship Bermuda Run location, the Browns approached it differently. Rather than simply duplicating their larger showroom, they carefully curated pieces that showcase a wide variety of styles, fabrics, finishes and customization options, allowing customers to special order furnishings tailored specifically to their homes.
Whether you’re furnishing a single room or designing your entire home, Meg Brown Home Furnishings – Lake Norman offers timeless style, personalized design expertise, and quality furnishings to make every house feel like home. Located at 702 Brawley School Road, in Mooresville, NC, the showroom is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed Sunday). For more information, call 704.360.2143 or visit www.megbrown. com. Be sure to follow Meg on Instagram @megbrownhome, where she shares a delightful mix of home inspiration, cooking adventures, and her signature sense of humor about everyday life.

ASK BETTY BEE This month — as the calendars and clocks tell us change is in the air — we turn to Bee Organized Lake Norman’s wise company mascot, Betty Bee, to share the finer points of facing a new school year with grace and a sense of calm!
Dear Betty Bee, School starts soon, and I’m already feeling overwhelmed just thinking about getting everyone back into a routine. How can I get my family organized before the chaos of fall begins?
BETTY BEE SAYS: Oh, friend, if your mind is already spinning with school supply lists, extracurricular activities, sports schedules and everything that comes along with the excitement of a new school year, you are not alone! The transition from slow summer days to hectic school year routines can feel like a big adjustment. The good news? A few simple systems can help your family feel more prepared and, hopefully, focused on making busy days run a little smoother. Here are a few of my favorite back-toschool organizational tips: Create a drop zone. Give the backpacks, lunch boxes, shoes and sports gear a home right near the door. When everything has its place, busy mornings suddenly seem much easier.
Give kids ownership. Start by giving each child a labeled bin, or use pictures on bins for younger children who aren’t reading yet. When kids know where their things belong, they can help keep spaces organized and less cluttered. If getting your home and family ready for the school year feels overwhelming, professional organizers can help establish systems that work for your family’s unique needs. From entryways and kitchens, to homework areas and playrooms, they are trained to troubleshoot your most hectic areas. There’s no doubt the new school year will bring busy mornings, full family calendars and plenty of new memories. With a little preparation and the right organizational systems in place, your home can be ready to support your family through this season of new possibilities!
Set up a school paper system. Create one Here’s to a wonderful school year filled central spot for permission slips and other with learning, personal growth and important school forms that need attention, endless happy moments! so they don’t even get a chance to take up - Betty Bee valuable space on the kitchen counter.

JOSH’S FARMERS MARKET
HOME AT LAST
Story Written By MARTIE EMORY, Photography By INGRID RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHY
Welcome to an exciting new chapter for Josh’s Farmers Market – something you know as a Lake Norman tradition – that has finally found its forever home! The story of two young boys selling homegrown cantaloupes has evolved into a small business owner’s dream. It’s equally a dream for local shoppers – their incredibly loyal customers – as the word is out that this beloved part of the Lake Norman community has established its permanent residence. Newly opened on approximately four acres near the Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville, the 6,700-square-foot indoor market has been enthusiastically showing off its new setting since opening in late June. The big red barn, and American flags proudly waving out front, are a joyful sight! “It’s been overwhelmingly crazy, but in the best way!” shares Owner Josh Graham. “We are amazed by all the traffic. It’s wonderful to finally have a location that is all ours!”
For more than 35 years, deliciousness at its finest has blended with community and camaraderie at its absolute best, and Josh is more than thankful this seventh move will be their last. Local families have continued to follow the hometown hospitality of Josh’s Farmers Market, even as it operated from a variety of different locations through the years – building the treasured customer relationships that have been instrumental in nurturing what you find at Josh’s today. Regulars have always flocked to the market for fresh produce that takes center stage there – including seasonal favorites always in plentiful supply. From juicy peaches, watermelon and berries in the summertime to apples, oranges and other seasonal selections, customers know they can count on freshness and quality, no matter which favorite they purchase. Their outstanding dairy products include cheese, hand-dipped ice cream and glass-bottled milk, local meats (including ribeyes and filets), mouthwatering baked goods such as hot biscuits with jam, apple pie, sourdough bread and donut holes, and the finest seafood North Carolina has to offer. Continued on next page.

It’s no secret fresh seafood at Josh’s Farmers Market has developed quite a following as locals rave about the quality of every delicious option Josh sources directly from the North Carolina coast each week. Follow them on Instagram @joshsfarmersmarket to see what’s making its way here – King crab, snow crab legs, shrimp, salmon, yellowfin tuna, grouper, flounder, scallops and more. (Hint: Arrive early, and don’t be surprised to find a line of local seafood lovers has already formed!)
To go with that delicious seafood, you can count on finding a variety of fresh vegetables, including corn, tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, squash and potatoes – all from local growers. The updated version of Josh’s Farmers Market also welcomes visitors to experience some new features, including the Bean Catcher café that’s even introduced a special featured drink – The Graham Slam! “I’m usually a black coffee guy,” shares Josh. “But this iced combination of chocolate, caramel and hazelnut is something special!” To complement your favorite coffee, there’s always something warm and wonderful being created by in-house baker

extraordinaire, Jayme Walker – most notably her irresistible cinnamon rolls. Also a popular attraction in the new space, be sure to check out the pineapple coring machine, already getting rave reviews from customers. While gathering goodness for your own family’s table at Josh’s Farmers Market, you’ll love celebrating every new season with friends and neighbors here. This coming fall promises to be extra special in the new place with the return of the popular Fall Festival! Local families know the excitement of watching for pumpkins, mums and autumn décor to show up, and soon after, anticipating when the market will transform into a traditional holiday destination where you’ll find fresh-cut Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, festive gift baskets, handcrafted treasures and the ever popular log reindeer. Every aspect of Josh’s is also a positive nudge for other small businesses in the area, as the market works closely with local growers and showcases specialty items from more than 40 local vendors. That’s a large part of what makes the market so authentic.
This brand new facility represents not only growth for the business, but also a long-awaited opportunity to establish a permanent home where future generations of Lake Norman families can continue the traditions born through the years at Josh’s Farmers Market. Josh’s own family includes wife Alicia and five children – Lucas, 21, Eli, 19, Clary, 18, Carrigan, 12 and Cassie, 10 – plus Josh’s parents, Debbie and Gary, and his mother-in-law, Linda Hepler, who are always part of the conversation! With a brand new view and some fun new additions, Josh’s Farmers Market is better than ever. “We are all about bringing people together,” shares Josh. “That vision will never change!” Josh’s Farmers Market is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., and Friday through Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Visit them at their new home – 142 Joe Knox Avenue in Mooresville, NC – online at joshsfarmersmarket.com and on Facebook and Instagram @joshsfarmersmarket. Victory Lanes
ENDLESS PLAY FOR EVERY AGE By MARTIE EMORY
I
f you’re seeking year-round fun – where there’s truly something to entertain every member of your family – this is your sign to get to know the vibrant Victory Lanes Events & Entertainment Center in Mooresville, NC.
The very definition of a family destination, Victory Lanes introduces you to endless ways of playing, socializing and connecting with family and friends in an atmosphere that delivers pure joy and endless smiles. One of those smiles can always be counted on from Sam – the six-year-old grandson of General Manager Paul Kreins – who loves to officially greet guests! His love for the excitement here comes naturally, as his grandfather, Paul, has been immersed in the bowling industry for years. Most recently as a professional consultant with under-performing bowling centers, fate led Paul to Lake Norman, where he became the general manager of Victory Lanes in 2012, purchased it in 2018 and revitalized it to the lively venue you see today.
30 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM
“My mission is to make Victory Lanes a valuable community gathering place and a premier family entertainment destination,” he shares. Every level of bowling expertise is welcome here with 40 championship lanes available to book online. Always with family in
mind, Victory Lanes also offers the Stars of Tomorrow youth league where skill and confidence are built from a young age. “Organized youth bowling is perhaps the only youth sport where participants earn scholarship funds from the time they first throw a bowling ball until they graduate high school,” shares Paul.
For more serious bowling enthusiasts, you’ll want to follow Victory Lanes on social media to stay up to date on some impressive upcoming events. “In April of 2027, 20,000 women bowlers will be with us for the USBC Women’s Open Championship,” Paul explains. “That means nonstop bowling for 100 days, seven days a week, that will have a $25 million economic impact on the community.” In 2019, Victory Lanes hosted the U.S. Open, the most demanding professional bowling championship in the world. Larger tournaments are typically booked several years in advance and, thanks to the reputation and personal connections Paul has built within the industry and the success of the new Victory Lanes, tournaments feel confident placing their biggest events in their capable hands. But, don’t let the venue’s obvious love for bowling and league competition fool you; there’s so much more to Victory Lanes that brings fun, food, music and games (and maybe some low key competition between family members) to your plans. Most recently, Wobbly Putt Miniature Golf opened on the grounds, adding another fun challenge for families sharing quality time. Open seven days a week, this state-of-theart family entertainment center also tempts you with an upscale billiard room and arcade as well as a full service pro shop. There’s no better place to meet for corporate team building, fundraising or gathering for school or family reunions, and separate meeting rooms are situated right beside the venue’s full service kitchen. For more relaxed gatherings, dining in the cleverly named Wobbly Butt Tap Room & Eatery is a must. Enjoy a full menu and bar, with live music and shag dancing on select nights and live comedy via The Comedy Zone every third Wednesday. It’s always a treat when the 20-piece LKN Big Band drops by for a round of music and dancing which is likely to get you in the mood to plan your own party or special event here. There’s treasured family lore attached to the Tap Room’s name, and regulars of Victory
Lanes know the story of the “original” Wobbly Butt himself, Leroy, the most distinguished dachshund! In 2017, Leroy received a little sister named Addie-Jo, and in 2020, their family decided they wanted to take the love of their dogs, and a fondness for good beer, and merge the two into an experience unlike any other. Wobbly Butt Brewery was born, where every beer was named after either the legendary Leroy, Addie-Jo or labeled with other dachshund nicknames. And yes, every beer was given the “Dachshund Stamp of Approval” – as Leroy and Addie-Jo “booped” each batch before bottling. Sadly, sweet Addie-Jo passed away in 2023, a day in July known as The Dark Day to the Victory Lanes family. The ever-resilient Leroy eventually
welcomed a new brother, Ryder, who you may see onsite from time to time. At Victory Lanes, there’s no doubt that family (two-legged and four-legged), good beer, delicious food and unmistakable camaraderie are taken very seriously! THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HEAT ON OUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH By ELISA WALLACE COPPEDE
C
onsidering August is the month known for extremely hot weather, it is vital for all to fully understand the effects extreme heat can have on our physical and mental health. Particularly the effect it can have on our most vulnerable populations – our younger and elderly loved ones. Statistics alone are sure to terrify anyone; with the Centers for Disease Prevention reporting that there were more than “1,500 heat-related deaths nationwide for the 2025 season.”
While as of 2025, severe cold remains the leading mortality risk, dying from extreme heat is still on the rise, especially this summer, where we all saw temperatures reach the upper 90s at the end of May. While it remains to be seen whether the summer of 2026 will break the records of last summer, one thing can be sure. No matter how hot the piedmont will be, it will be hot enough to cause profound effects on all and possibly irreversible damage to certain populations if precautionary measures are not taken. How exactly does extreme heat affect one’s physical and mental health? According to the article, “How heat affects the mind,” by the American Psychology Association, excessive heat will first attack one’s physical well being. “The physical consequences of heat, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, are well known.” While heat stroke and heat exhaustion sound similar, they are different in a few ways. Heat exhaustion is the precursor to heat stroke, the more severe and dangerous heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion occurs when your body loses excessive amounts of salt, causing significant harm to your body such as sweating, clammy skin, a fast yet weak pulse, muscle cramps, headache, nausea, dizziness and even fainting. One thing to note though, is when heat exhaustion occurs, your mind is still intact and those suffering from heat exhaustion can often still converse. According to the Centers for Disease Control, heat stroke occurs when, “the body’s temperature regulation fails completely, causing core body temperature to rapidly rise above 104°F (40°C).” When a heat stroke occurs,
32 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM
• your body is unable to regulate your core temperature, and sweating is unable to occur. Sadly, when a heat stroke occurs, “the body temperature can rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes,” eventually leading to permanent disability or death if immediate emergency treatment does not occur. Symptoms of heat stroke include a confused mental status, slurred • speech, hot dry skin, profuse sweating, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
Another simple step is to stay in an airconditioned location as long as possible. If this is not an option, go to a nearby store or public space like a library to get out of the heat. When temperatures rise, simply going into the shade may not be enough.
• While physically extreme temperatures wreak havoc on one’s body, hot temperatures can also have devastating effects on one’s mental health. The article, “4 Effects of Heat on Mental Health,” by UCLA • Health, explains how more than 50% of Americans find themselves more anxious. However, the effects on one’s mental health are not limited to simply being worried. • Specific heat-related factors can lead to severe depression through increased substance abuse, medication inconsistency, poor sleep and poor serotonin levels, all brought on by extreme heat. Irritability and aggression are two other mental health effects brought on by feverish temperatures. Studies show, “...from 2021, rising temperatures can increase the number of violent crimes, including homicides, sexual offenses and assaults.” What is even more shocking is how in, “...seven [unnamed] U.S. cities, each time the temperature rose five degrees Celsius (nine degrees Fahrenheit), there were up to 5% more sex offenses the following week.”
NEVER leave children OR animals in cars unattended during hotter temperatures. Even a quick trip inside to get some milk could lead to a heat-related illness.
All this said, there are simple things you can do to avoid putting yourself or those you love in a negative heat-related situation. •
Stay hydrated! Make sure water is always on hand. If you or someone you care about is not crazy about water, try infusing it with an electrolyte packet or simple lemon or fruit, anything to make it more enticing.
Schedule outdoor activities sensibly. If you do not have to be outside for an activity, do not.
Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors as they may have a situation where air conditioning is not happening. Finally, stay up to date with elevated temperatures daily by keeping up with the news. Do not find yourself, or someone you care about, in a situation where heat can negatively impact you and your physical and mental well being.
David Franceschelli
A NOVEL APPROACH TO LIFE AT THE LAKE By MARTIE EMORY
L
With both novels, David captures the essence of small town intrigue. His leading protagonist, fictional prosecutor and assistant district attorney Blake Moretti, teams up with seasoned investigator Ralph Morgan as the two fully immerse themselves in unsolved mysteries. Giving new readers a glimpse into Blake and Ralph’s world, where the waters of truth are often clouded by secrets and lies, has been a dream come true for David.
ife on the lake is a beautiful thing, and local novelist David Franceschelli is navigating his newest career path with a mix of the sweet serenity and subtle nod to mystery those beautiful waters evoke.
Introducing Denver, NC’s resident homicide prosecutor turned author – bringing what he calls “real world legal gravity” to the Lake Norman literary scene! Fully embracing his move to Lake Norman after retiring in 2014, David has found endless inspiration as he turned his talents to the wonderful world of fiction writing.
Legendary literary columnist Vick Mickunas recently featured David’s work on Book Nook – an author-inspired interview program on Dayton’s public radio station WYSO – elaborating that David’s “encyclopedic knowledge of what it’s really like to prosecute killers makes his fiction read with a gravity and subtle nuance that is enthralling.”
Having grown up in the heart of the Finger Lakes region – Auburn, New York – David admits a strong love for the water has always been in his blood. “After retiring, my wife, Debbie, and I were looking for the perfect place to settle down,” he shares. “Lake Norman felt like home, allowing me to return to the lake lifestyle I loved as a child, just with much better weather!” David’s thoughtful transition to writing suspense novels is a natural extension of his earlier career. A graduate of the University of Dayton School of Law, he spent 31 years as an assistant prosecutor for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office in Dayton, Ohio. “Working in the Violent Crime Division, I prosecuted more than 200 murder cases – including 15 death penalty cases – and handled some of the most high profile, coldblooded murder cases in the county’s history,” David explains. “These intense, real world experiences heavily inspire the grit and suspense in my storytelling.” His first novel, Misty River (the first in the Blake Moretti Thriller Series), debuted in February of 2024. David’s latest release, Whispers From Dark Waters, is the second in the series, just recently published in June of 2026. “Lake living provides a powerful contrast of tranquility and mystery that directly shapes my fiction work,” he adds. “I actually considered using Lake Norman as the

backdrop but decided to base the fictitious town of ‘Misty River’ in New York State because it allowed me to weave together three distinct chapters of my life.” That includes the physical setting and complex characters of his novels that draw heavily from his youth spent in New York, combining people and memories from a childhood nurtured near the Finger Lakes, his legal career alongside the finest professionals in Dayton and his current, quieter moments where he’s happily watching the herons and those incomparable Lake Norman sunrises. “While Book One (Misty River) centers on the Great Miami River in Dayton, Ohio, Book Two (Whispers From Dark Waters) bridges these worlds with a dark mystery originating in the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in central New York,” David explains.
If you’re searching for an excellent read to ease you into the fall season – and love a supremely well written thriller series – signed copies of both of David’s novels are currently available at CC’s Café and Catering located at 3740 NC Business 16 in Denver, NC. Cain Center for the Arts & Davidson Community Players Present Their First Collaboration:
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET still creating it here, with our people. We’re not flying in actors and directors from New York. That’s pretty special,” he adds. “The dream of both of our organizations is to create a nationally renowned arts ecosystem in Lake Norman.” Cain Center for the Arts is the region’s multidisciplinary home for performing arts, visual arts and community engagement. Since opening in 2023, the organization has presented world class performances, offered year-round arts education to the community and served as a creative hub for local artists and arts organizations.

A
hint of much loved nostalgia will be alive and well this month in Cornelius, NC as Cain Center for the Arts and the Davidson Community Players will co-produce the acclaimed Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet.
This renowned smash hit portrays an untold moment in American music history, capturing every emotion of the momentous occasion when legendary artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis gathered for a jam session in Memphis, Tennessee. With each of those four performers immersed in their own rising careers at the time, the experience portrayed on stage means lucky audiences will hear unforgettable hits such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Hound Dog.” If those treasured tunes ring a bell or stir a fond memory in your heart, visit cainarts.org to purchase your tickets now! Million Dollar Quartet will be performed at Cain Center for the Arts from August 8th until August 23rd. The first collaboration of its kind – where both organizations directly participated in this professional, locally produced piece of theatre – it marks the deepening partnership between the two, sure to lead to many more magical presentations for Lake Norman theatre enthusiasts. “From the moment we opened our doors, we’ve been committed to bringing world class performances to this community, while creating

a home where local arts organizations can grow and thrive,” says Cain Center Executive Director Justin Dionne. “Million Dollar Quartet marks an exciting first for us. We’re not just presenting great entertainment anymore, we’re now creating it for our audiences.” Justin shares he’s always felt Million Dollar Quartet would be a perfect fit for Lake Norman – a high energy storyline the local community will connect with immediately. “Knowing Davidson Community Players’ commitment to quality and to serving this region, it felt like a natural choice for our first collaboration. Together, we will create something truly special,” he adds.
Established in 1965, the Davidson Community Players is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the community by providing theatre experiences and education opportunities that inspire, challenge and entertain. The popular organization has been at the forefront of local theatre in North Carolina thanks to a commitment to artistic excellence and strong community engagement. “One of our biggest collective challenges is making sure local artists remain nourished both creatively and financially,” shares Steve. “We hope our efforts with DCP and Cain Center can play a role in demonstrating to creative people – especially young artists just out of college – that this is a city and region where it’s worth putting down roots!”
Executive Director of the Davidson Community Players Steve Kalaski notes many folks are surprised that theatre of this caliber is still described as “community theatre.” “At DCP, we believe as long as we’re doing work by and for the community – meaning all our artists have local ties and there are opportunities on stage and off for everyone – we can professionalize as much as we want,” shares Steve. “We have a 10-person staff with remarkable experience, and all of our designers and many of our actors identify as ‘professionals.’ The sky is the limit in terms of quality, and there is no rule that says ‘community theatre’ must be inherently less than top tier.” He also wants audiences to take pride in the fact that this show is a labor of love for the Lake Norman community. “Working together allows us to raise production values, offer more performances and pay our artists more equitable rates. But, we’re

THE ART OF SAYING “NO” – IT’S A COMPLETE SENTENCE By JOY NELSON THOMAS
I
met my match – she’s comfortable saying “no,” she’s unapologetically herself and she says stop saying sorry.
WHY IS IT SO HARD TO SAY? We’ve learned that our worth depends on being needed. We over explain because we fear judgment. We say “yes” because we crave approval. Being liked is different from being respected. Sometimes discomfort means you’re standing on your ground where it matters. It’s time to step into your power by unlearning a lifetime of people-pleasing. PRACTICING THE “POWER NO” Try it out: “No, I’m not available for that.” And, stop there – no explanation needed. “No, thank you.” “No.”
Wow! I want to be her.
Let it be simple. Let it be firm. Let it be enough.
In a world that often demands women to be agreeable, available and accommodating, one of the most revolutionary things a woman can say is “No.” Not “No, because I have something else,” or “No, I’m sorry, but…” just ”No.”
Write it! Feel it, owe it!
Did you know that no can be a complete sentence in context, particularly in conversation? While it’s just a single word, it can stand alone as a complete response because it implies a full idea. For generations, women have been conditioned to soften their boundaries, tiptoe around discomfort and prioritize others’ feelings over their own instincts. Whether it’s at work, in relationships or within family dynamics, the pressure to be everything to everyone can be relentless. But, what if you gave yourself full permission to say no unapologetically, boldly and without explanation? NO IS A COMPLETE SENTENCE Saying no is about honoring your energy, time and truth. When women learn to say no, they’re not just protecting their peace, they’re redefining their worth. They’re declaring that their needs are not secondary. That their comfort matters. That their life isn’t up for negotiation. “No” is a boundary. It’s a filter. It’s a declaration that you are not available for every ask, every burden, every expectation.
44 44| LKN-MAGAZINE.COM
At first, it might feel awkward or even guilt-inducing. But, over time, it becomes a radical form of self-care. You start to trust your inner voice. You realize that every “yes” to someone else is a “no” to something in your own life. MAKING SPACE FOR YOU! Ironically, the more confidently you say no, the more space you make for authentic yeses. Yes to rest. Yes to creativity. Yes to relationships that nourish instead of drain. Saying no doesn’t shut the world out – it helps you invite the right things in. Until next time...let this stay with you. “No” is not a rejection, it’s a direction. It’s a path to alignment, authenticity and self respect. “No” is not a weakness. It’s a sentence. A full stop. A full truth. So, to every woman reading this – try it. Say it. Practice it. And remember, you don’t owe anyone an explanation for protecting your peace. No. Period.

5 COMMON MONEY ARGUMENTS – AND HOW TO NAVIGATE THEM AS A COUPLE By JON MARZANO, AIF®, MANAGING PRINCIPAL
M
oney is one of the most emotionally charged topics in any relationship— even for couples who usually communicate well. Over time, many partners encounter similar financial disagreements. Understanding the most common points of tension can help you manage them with empathy, clarity, and teamwork.
1. SUPPORTING ADULT CHILDREN Wanting the best for your children is only natural, but financial support can become a sticking point when one partner believes it’s time to promote independence while the other wants to continue helping. These disagreements often involve tuition, home down payments, monthly allowances, or paying off adult children’s debts.
about priorities can help each person feel heard and respected.
while the other focuses on saving for retirement or long-term security.
4. HIDDEN SPENDING Financial secrecy—whether it’s hiding debts, purchases, or accounts—can seriously damage trust. Discovering undisclosed spending often leads to resentment and a sense of betrayal.
Tip: Align on shared financial goals. Collaboratively creating a roadmap that balances immediate enjoyment with future planning helps avoid misalignment and builds a stronger partnership.
Tip: Commit to financial transparency by scheduling regular money check-ins. Honesty fosters trust and prevents small secrets from turning into bigger problems. 5. CONFLICTING FINANCIAL PRIORITIES Couples often differ in what they view as worthwhile financial goals. One partner may value experiences and lifestyle upgrades,
FINAL THOUGHT Disagreements about money are common— but they don’t have to be divisive. With open communication, empathy, and a willingness to compromise, couples can use these challenges as opportunities to grow closer and build a financial future that reflects both partners’ values.
Tip: Have an honest conversation about your expectations and values. Set clear, mutually agreed-upon boundaries that balance generosity with fostering responsibility. 2. INHERITANCE AND ESTATE PLANNING Few topics stir up emotion like discussions about inheritance. One partner might prioritize leaving a legacy to children, while the other leans toward charitable giving or putting conditions on how money is passed down. Tip: Talk openly about estate planning and align your decisions with shared family values. A financial planner or estate attorney can help mediate complex conversations and ensure both partners’ wishes are respected. 3. DIFFERENT SPENDING HABITS Even financially secure couples can clash over how money is spent. Conflict often arises when one partner is a saver and the other a spender—especially when lifestyle choices are involved, like dining out, travel, or luxury purchases. THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST ONLINE SCAMS? SHOP LOCAL.
H
ave you noticed how difficult it has become to know who—or what— to trust online?
Every day, consumers are bombarded with social media advertisements promising incredible deals, miracle products, luxury items at unbelievable prices, and services that seem too good to pass up. While many online businesses are legitimate, stories of scams, counterfeit products, stolen credit card information, fake websites, and sellers who vanish after receiving payment have become increasingly common. Most of us know someone who has experienced it firsthand. Perhaps they ordered a product that never arrived, received an item that looked nothing like the photos, or discovered unauthorized charges on their account after making a purchase. In a world where almost anyone can create a website or social media page in minutes, it can be difficult to separate trustworthy businesses from those simply looking to make a quick dollar. Fortunately, there is a solution that has been strengthening communities for generations: shopping local. When you choose to do business with a local company, you’re not purchasing from a faceless website halfway around the world. You’re supporting people who live in your community, attend local events, cheer for the same schools and sports teams, worship in local churches,

and invest their time and resources right here where we live. Local business owners have something incredibly valuable at stake— their reputation. Unlike an anonymous online seller who can disappear with the click of a button, local businesses rely on relationships and word-of-mouth referrals. Their customers are often their neighbors, friends, and fellow community members. They know that providing excellent service isn’t just good business; it’s essential to earning trust and building long-term success. One of the greatest benefits of shopping local is accountability. If you have a question, concern, or issue with a product or service, you know exactly where to go. You can pick up the phone, stop by the business, or speak directly with someone who is invested in making things right. That level of accessibility and personal service simply cannot be replicated by most online retailers.
local businesses creates a positive ripple effect throughout the community. Local business owners hire local employees, support local charities, sponsor youth sports teams, contribute to community events, and often collaborate with other small businesses. The dollars spent locally tend to stay local, helping strengthen the economic foundation of the entire region. Here in Lake Norman, we are fortunate to be surrounded by passionate entrepreneurs, family-owned businesses, skilled tradespeople, talented artisans, and dedicated professionals who work hard every day to serve our community. They are the people sponsoring the events we attend, donating to local causes, and helping make this area such a wonderful place to live. The next time a flashy social media advertisement catches your attention or an unfamiliar website promises an unbelievable deal, consider pausing for a moment. Before clicking “Buy Now,” ask yourself if there might be a local business that offers the same product or service.
Shopping local also allows consumers to make more informed decisions. Instead of relying solely on polished advertisements and carefully curated online reviews, you can meet the people behind the business. You can see products in person, ask questions, receive expert guidance, and gain confidence in your purchase before spending your hard-earned money.
You may discover something even more valuable than a great purchase: a trusted relationship, exceptional customer service, and the satisfaction of supporting the people who help our community thrive.
Beyond the personal benefits, supporting
Shop Local. Support Local. Trust Local.
In an age where trust can sometimes feel hard to find, shopping local remains one of the simplest ways to buy with confidence.

THE “TEMPERATUREOXYGEN SQUEEZE” Why Lake Norman’s Striped Bass Have a Tough August By ROBIN SHUPE KELLER
I
f you’re out on Lake Norman in August and notice fewer striped bass biting, or worse, see some floating on the surface, you’re witnessing one of the lake’s most studied and persistent natural phenomena. It’s called the temperature-oxygen squeeze, and it happens almost every year. Although I rarely write about fishing, because I know so little about it, when I saw a news article about this phenomenon, I immediately wanted to know more about it. So, the following is what my research turned up. I would like to share with our readers a genuinely interesting science story that plays out on Lake Norman every August, regardless of weather conditions in any given year.
A LAKE WITH THREE LAYERS By midsummer, Lake Norman isn’t one uniform body of water, it separates into distinct layers. According to the SC
Department of Natural Resources, this annual phenomenon occurs when the top layer, called the epilimnion, is warm and holds the most oxygen. Below it sits the metalimnion, a middle layer where the thermocline forms and oxygen is scarce. Beneath that is the hypolimnion, a deeper, cooler layer that still has some oxygen, at least early in the season. Striped bass, one of the lake’s most popular sport fish, are caught in the middle of this arrangement. As a Wildlife Resources Commission biologist has explained it, the fish prefer to retreat to that lower, cooler layer in summer, but as surface water heats up, the middle layer above them loses oxygen and effectively acts as a lid, trapping them below. Stripers generally need water cooler than about 78 degrees, and as summer wears on, that comfortable zone keeps shrinking from both directions, too warm above, too little oxygen below.
A Recurring Problem Since the Mid-2000s This isn’t a one-off event. Wildlife officials say fish kills tied to this squeeze have occurred on a frequent basis since 2004, and Lake Norman has seen at least four major striped bass kills since then, including one year when roughly 7,000 fish died. One contributing factor is unique to this lake: an unauthorized introduction of river herring, a forage fish, tends to congregate in that same lowoxygen pocket, and stripers chasing them down get trapped and run out of oxygen with the herring. Lake Norman’s particular layout adds another wrinkle. Because two power stations discharge water into the lake, sometimes exceeding 100 degrees, that heat mixes with already warm summer water, and since hot water holds less oxygen, it can intensify the squeeze fish are already experiencing. A FISHERY THAT’S ADAPTED Rather than fight a losing battle, wildlife managers changed strategy. Since 2012, the state has shifted toward stocking hybrid striped bass, a cross between striped bass and white bass, because the hybrids can tolerate water exceeding 90 degrees and survive on much less dissolved oxygen than pure stripers. Locally, anglers often call them Bodie Bass, and the easiest way to tell them apart from a white perch is the broken horizontal lines along their sides. GOOD NEWS FOR ANGLERS The squeeze hasn’t ended striper fishing on Lake Norman; it’s just changed how people fish it. Local fishing guides note that in summer, stripers concentrate in deep, cool, oxygenated water, which becomes the key to finding them this time of year. And during the warmest stretch of the year, the state eases up on the books: from June through September, Lake Norman has no minimum size limit on striped or hybrid bass, though the daily creel limit of four fish, combined, still applies. So, if your favorite striper hole feels a little quieter in August, the fish aren’t gone, they’re just hiding from a squeeze that’s been part of Lake Norman’s summer rhythm for at least two decades.

HOPE STARTS WITH A MEAL Bags of Hope is working to ensure local children have enough to eat every weekend—and the community can help. By NICOLE FIEHLER
B
ags of Hope is a local nonprofit fighting childhood food insecurity by providing weekend food bags to more than 900 students in 35 schools across the Lake Norman and greater Charlotte area. In Mecklenburg County, 1 out of 6 children live in food insecure homes and 47% of CMS’ 143,000 students receive free meals. While students may receive meals at school, they might fail to have enough food at home on the weekend. Bags of Hope helps bridge the gap by providing meals and snacks to cover students from Friday afternoon through Monday morning, helping students return to school wellfed, focused, and ready to learn. Since becoming a nonprofit in 2017, Bags of Hope has grown every year to meet increasing need. During the 2025–2026 school year, the number of students served each weekend increased from 800 in September to 930 by year’s end, thanks to emergency funding received during the holidays and again in the spring. The organization distributed a record 32,537 weekend and holiday food bags, providing 284,907 meals to local children. Bags of Hope plans to serve 950 students each weekend during the 2026–2027 school year, but demand continues to outpace resources. 8 schools, representing more than 300 students,
remain on the waitlist. Businesses, foundations, and individuals can help by sponsoring a school or students to ensure more children have reliable access to food on weekends. Continued on next page.

“Hunger doesn’t take a summer break”, Executive Director, Ashley Nydish shared. “The children and families we serve still need reliable access to food when school is out. Thanks to a recent generous food donation, Bags of Hope can provide weekend food bags for nearly 500 students this summer for the very first time. While we’re celebrating this milestone, we also know the need in our community continues to grow. Every child deserves to return to school healthy, nourished, and ready to learn. We’re committed to serving every school and every student who needs us, but we can’t do it alone. It takes neighbors, businesses, churches, foundations, and community partners working together to make that possible. If you’re looking for a way to make a real difference in a child’s life, I invite you to reach out and learn how you can help us provide hope—and food—to even more local children.”

BACK TO SCHOOL TRADITIONS, LAKE NORMAN STYLE By JULIE PARRA
W
hile August can feel busy, it also marks the beginning of new traditions. Whether you are sending your child off to kindergarten, helping a high school senior prepare for their final first day, or packing a college student for a new adventure, it’s often the little moments that become the memories families remember most.
Before the busy schedules take over, slow down with breakfast together. Local favorites like Famous Toastery, Linden Bakery, or Summit Coffee offer a chance to enjoy one last relaxed morning before everyone heads in different directions. Sometimes those conversations over pancakes or coffee become just as memorable as the first day itself. For high school seniors, August is the start of a year filled with milestones. Before football games, homecoming, and college applications fill up the calendar, consider scheduling senior photos. Scenic spots like Jetton Park, Fisher Farm Park, or Downtown Davidson provide beautiful backdrops while capturing this exciting season of life close to home. Back to school season also looks a little different for families getting ready to send a student off to college. Before move-in day arrives, spend an afternoon shopping

together at Birkdale Village, where you can check off dorm essentials while enjoying lunch or sweet treats along the way. Looking for something more unique? Local boutiques, antique stores, and vintage shops throughout Davidson and Cornelius are great places to find one of a kind decor that helps a dorm room feel a little more like home. Once everyone settles into a new routine, don’t forget to celebrate the little victories. Making it through the first week of school is enough reason for a family pizza night at Alinos Pizzeria or Brixx Wood Fired Pizza or an ice cream stop at Handles or
Brusters. Those simple traditions often become the moments children look forward to every August. Whether your family is celebrating a child’s first day of kindergarten, a high school senior’s last first day, or sending a student off to college, Lake Norman offers countless ways to make the season memorable. From breakfast before school and senior photos to dorm shopping and well earned ice cream after the first week, it’s often the simplest traditions that become the memories families cherish the most.

early everyone has heard of the Titanic. The RMS Titanic is remembered for many reasons. On its maiden voyage across the North Atlantic, it struck an iceberg and sank. Today, it lies about 12,500 feet, or 2.4 miles, beneath the ocean’s surface. More than 1,500 people died, and over 2,200 passengers and crew were on board, including servers, laundry workers, and cooks. The ship was also famous for its size. At 882 feet long and 95 feet wide, it was more than 100 feet longer than any other ship of its time. And It took 10 years to build. Many believed it was “nearly unsinkable” because

TITANIC of its watertight compartments along the keel. However, those compartments were not sealed at the top, allowing water to spread from one section to the next. Another factor in the disaster was the captain’s decision to keep the ship at full speed despite iceberg warnings in the area. The RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship, not Royal Majesty Ship as many believe. Most of these facts come from the TITANIC show which we attended in Charlotte, NC. When you enter the event, they give you a Boarding Card. This shows you that the RMS Titanic is a cruise ship with four individual, coal fired engines and the flagship of the WHITE STAR LINE,
First class lived up to its name and included well-known passengers such as John Astor, the wealthiest person on board, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Titanic designer Thomas Andrews. The all perished in the sinking of the Titanic. A grand staircase led to their quarters. First-class amenities also included fine dining utensils, a smoking room, and a room reserved for gentlemen. As we toured the second-class and third-class quarters we found they were not that bad, but not comparable to first class. It bothered me when I saw an Iron gate to keep the classes from mixing. Overall, she was a beautiful ship, and we pray for the lost souls who perished when she went to rest on the bottom of the ocean on April 15, 1912.

KEEPING RELATIONSHIPS INTACT IN A DIVIDED WORLD. By KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
I
want to express my gratitude to everyone who takes the time to read my column. Many of us share similar life experiences that are challenging and require guidance from an impartial third party. My intention is for this column to provide you with a fresh perspective that can assist you in navigating through these challenges. Typically, I respond to specific emails I receive, but this month, I decided to address a common issue that has become prevalent in our society. I’ve received multiple emails about this, and I’ve touched on it, but I’ve also avoided it because of the negativity it brings. Hopefully, addressing it will foster open and honest communication and help mend some broken relationships. I’m referring to the destruction of families and friendships due to differences in political or religious beliefs. First, let me provide some insight into how our subconscious mind operates. It’s quite literal and doesn’t distinguish between positive and negative attention; all it perceives is attention. Tabloids are so popular because negative stories get the headlines and, as a society, we enjoy a trainwreck. We generally don’t want it, but we tend to gravitate towards it after it occurs. The fear of missing out overrides reasonable thinking and directly influences our thoughts and decisions. The more we focus on negativity, the faster objectivity fades away. Be cautious about cutting people out of your life, especially when you eliminate individuals with great character simply because they don’t share your beliefs or agree with you. That’s the beauty of good communication and conversation. If we’re open minded, we can gain new perspectives and insights that may not have occurred to us, enabling us to make better decisions in our lives. At the very least, we become informed, allowing us to engage in intelligent and respectful conversations, which are becoming increasingly challenging for various reasons. Be cautious not to mix beliefs, feelings and facts. Beliefs are beliefs, feelings are feelings, but facts are facts. When we manipulate facts to support our beliefs or feelings, we’re deceiving ourselves. It’s crucial to educate ourselves and obtain
64 | LKN-MAGAZINE.COM
accurate information to engage in intelligent debates and conversations. Remember, every story has three sides: your side, my side and the truth that lies somewhere in the middle. Social media is not a reliable source of facts. Videos and audio can be manipulated to alter the reality of a message, and AI is a powerful tool for manipulation. When conducting research and engaging in conversations, especially when you disagree, try to keep your emotions in check. When we become emotional, we become reactive and tend to make poor choices. Allowing this to happen can lead to biased and skewed views, essentially out of balance. Additionally, avoid associating with people who only share your beliefs or agree with everything you say. This can lead to inflexibility and narrowmindedness. When you surround yourself with people who only share your beliefs or agree with everything you say, your feelings and beliefs become your identity. This is why people get upset when challenged or questioned; they perceive it as a personal attack. When we repeatedly hear about someone, we tend to believe it, even without any evidence. Consider people you’ve met in life you avoided due to their reputation and rumors, only to find them completely
different and wonderful once you got to know them. The rumors were simply not true. Politically, there are good people who don’t share your beliefs. Is that a valid reason to end a relationship? Our actions and beliefs don’t define us; it’s our heart and character that truly matter. Cutting people of great character from your life simply because they disagree with you or have different beliefs would be a loss for you, not for them. Why eliminate individuals who, in the past or potentially in the future, could bring joy and positivity into your life, especially when it comes to things beyond our control? I long for the days when, out of respect, we refrained from discussing politics or religion. However, those days are long gone, and with the constant bombardment of negativity and misinformation from television, the internet and social media, we’ve become increasingly judgmental based on political and religious beliefs rather than our heart and character. When it comes to embracing your political beliefs or fostering positive and respectful relationships, which would you choose? Ultimately, do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?

comes with running a household. The family home and beach condo became too painful to keep, and she eventually sold both. Many of the family’s belongings, including wrapped Christmas gifts from that final holiday season, remain untouched in storage. Yet amid the heartbreak, her sons showed remarkable resilience. Lucas, then 14, seemed to grow up overnight, helping around the house and looking after his younger brother. Sam found comfort in family, sports, and his faith. For Emily, holidays became especially difficult. “I used to love Christmas. Now I spend most of the season just waiting for it to be over,” commented Emily. To this day, she doesn’t put up a Christmas tree. Through it all, one thing carried them forward: family. “I could not have done this without them,” Emily stated. AN UNEXPECTED REUNION In 2024, Emily reconnected with Steve, a former high school boyfriend, while participating in activities surrounding their 30year class reunion. After exchanging messages, they agreed to meet for lunch.
HOPE AFTER HEARTBREAK
The moment she saw him, she recognized the same bright blue eyes she remembered from high school. When he hugged her, she unexpectedly began to cry. “It was still so painful. That hug felt incredibly comforting,” said Emily.
A Journey Through Loss, Love, and Life’s What began as friendship slowly became something more. Unexpected Second Chances By CAROLYN SHORE-PETERSON
On December 26, 2021, Emily Nelms’s life changed forever. Her husband, Brandon, had been hospitalized with COVID and was fighting for his life in the ICU. Emily spent countless hours at his bedside, holding his hand, and reassuring him that when he recovered, they would finally move to the beach, a dream he had always cherished. Then a doctor walked into the waiting room and spoke four words:
“We were best friends,” Emily said. “Every year of our marriage was happier than the last.” Married for 16 years, the couple shared two sons, Lucas and Sam, and a life centered around family. Brandon coached youth sports, attended every wrestling match, and loved spending time at Carolina Beach, where the family created countless memories fishing, crabbing, and simply being together. “He was one of those people who made you want to be a better person,” Emily recalled. For the first time since Brandon’s death, Emily had someone to share daily conversations with, discuss parenting decisions, and simply do life alongside. “I didn’t realize how much I missed that connection,” Emily recalled. Opening her heart again wasn’t easy. She worried about her sons, wrestled with guilt, and questioned whether she could truly love someone else after losing Brandon. Eventually, she realized that loving Steve wasn’t replacing the love she shared with her late husband. “It wasn’t a diminishment of what Brandon and I had,” Emily said. “I believe Brandon would have wanted more for me than simply surviving.” Continued on next page.

Eleven days after entering the hospital, Steve walked out. “There are so many words and yet no words to describe what it felt like to leave that hospital with him,” Emily stated. The experience reinforced a lesson both had learned through hardship: tomorrow is never guaranteed. That realization led to a decision. On June 18, the couple will exchange vows in a simple courthouse ceremony attended only by their parents before celebrating with a getaway to the Grove Park Inn. Continued from previous page.
FACING THE PAST AGAIN Then, just as Emily began embracing a new chapter, life delivered another devastating challenge. The day after Christmas in 2025, Steve became critically ill and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed severe bilateral pneumonia, heart failure, and kidney failure. He was admitted to the ICU. The same ICU. The same hospital. Just two doors away from the room where Brandon had died four years earlier. “Oh my God, it was awful,” Emily said. As she walked those familiar hallways, fear consumed her. Every drop in Steve’s oxygen levels brought panic. Every test felt like a potential turning point. Then something unexpected happened. One of the nurses recognized her. The nurse, Liz, remembered caring for Brandon and remembered how young Emily’s sons had been at the time. The reunion became a reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, human connection matters. For 11 days, Emily rarely left Steve’s side. “I was terrified every day,” Emily recalled. CHOOSING HOPE After several agonizing days, doctors finally identified the cause of Steve’s illness and

“We didn’t want to spend more time waiting,” Emily commented. “Life is uncertain, but what we feel for each other isn’t.”
“Hope means trusting that life can still surprise you,” said Emily. “The worst thing that ever happens to you doesn’t get to decide how the rest of your story ends.”
Today, Brandon’s memory remains an important Her message to others facing loss is simple: part of Emily’s life, woven into the stories she “Never mistake the chapter you’re in for the shares and the sons they raised together. ending. Mediterranean Made Simple
THE STORY BEHIND SUMMER’S FARE By SUMMER FAIR CARTER cookbook, it grows with you—recipes can be removed, replaced, or added as your family’s favorites evolve. Friends began asking if I would make one for them, and before long, their friends were asking too. What started as a personal project soon became the foundation for Summer’s Fare. Since my name is Summer Fair Carter, the business name felt like the perfect fit—a play on my middle name, Fair, and the delicious fare I love creating and sharing. For 25 years, my greatest joy was being a stay-at-home mom, raising our three sons, Logan, Dylan, and Dalton. This August, our youngest heads off to college, and my husband and I officially become empty nesters. As one chapter closes, another has opened in the most rewarding way.
S
ometimes the most meaningful journeys begin with an unexpected challenge. For me, it started with my husband’s health.
When my husband learned his LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides were alarmingly high, his cardiologist encouraged us to adopt the Mediterranean way of eating. Like many people, I was not exactly sure what that meant, so I began researching. The more I learned, the more I realized this was not another fad diet—it was a lifestyle centered around fresh, wholesome foods and simple ingredients. We made significant changes overnight. We switched to only using extra virgin olive oil, eliminated processed foods, dramatically reduced sugar, avoided seed oils, eliminated red meat and high-saturated fat dairy, and built our meals around fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like poultry, and wildcaught fish. We also started cooking everything at home, allowing us to control the quality of every ingredient we served. The results were remarkable. In less than a month, my husband’s cholesterol numbers improved so dramatically that even his cardiologist wanted to know what we had done. That experience changed the way our family thinks about food. Every meal became an opportunity to nourish our bodies, and that philosophy continues to guide our lives today. As I experimented with recipes, I wanted a better way to organize them than stacks of paper tucked inside kitchen drawers. I created Mediterranean Life: A Customizable Cookbook, filled with family favorites, each featuring a photo and easyto-follow instructions. Unlike a traditional

a customizable cookbook, a growing business, and a calling. I genuinely believe food can either be the best form of medicine or the worst form of poison. My hope is to inspire others to make choices that nourish their bodies, strengthen their families, and bring joy back to the table—one meal at a time. To learn more about my classes, Mediterranean Life: A Customizable Cookbook, or private events, visit www.summersfare.com, email hello@summersfare.com, follow Summer’s Fare on Facebook, or find me on Instagram @summers_fare. I’d love to help you discover just how delicious and rewarding the Mediterranean way of eating can be.
Today, I teach Mediterranean cooking classes, Mediterranean lifestyle classes, and sourdough workshops that show healthy cooking does not have to be complicated. Through my own journey, I learned how to recreate many of our favorite recipes using clean, wholesome ingredients while preserving the flavors we love. I enjoy helping others discover they can do the same. Each class participant receives recipes on the same photo-filled templates used in Mediterranean Life: A Customizable Cookbook, allowing them to build a personalized cookbook that reflects their family’s favorite meals. I am fortunate to teach at Lake Norman Olive and Vine, host classes at Lincolnton Suites on Main, and offer private cooking experiences for groups. I am especially grateful to have my wonderful daughter-in-law, Holly, helping me grow the business. Sharing this journey with family has made it even more meaningful. This June, Summer’s Fare celebrated its first anniversary. Looking back, I am amazed that a simple desire to improve my husband’s health has grown into a business dedicated to helping others embrace healthier living without sacrificing the joy of gathering around the table. When I am not teaching, you will usually find me exercising, reading, traveling, cheering on my Florida Gators during football season, or spoiling our two pugs, Luke, and Moose. If there’s one lesson this journey has taught me, it’s that meaningful change often begins with one simple choice. For our family, that choice was to prepare cleaner meals. That single decision became a healthier lifestyle,
FRUIT SALAD • • • •
INGREDIENTS: 1lb green or red grapes, cut in half 1 pineapple, cored and chopped 1-pint of fresh strawberries, sliced 1-pint of fresh blueberries
DRESSING: • 2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil • 1 lime, zested and juiced • 2 TBSP local honey DIRECTIONS: 1. Wash all fruits, cut into bit sized pieces and place in large bowl. 2. In small bowl, whisk the extra virgin olive oil, zest and juice of the lime and local honey. 3. Pour over the fruit and stir to combine. This is great as a refreshing dessert after dinner, a snack, or even over-steel cut oats. NOTE: You can use any seasonal fruits you like. The best part is this extra virgin olive oil dressing. Always try to get extra virgin olive oil into as many dishes as you can since it is so amazing for your health.
