You’re Engaged! Now What? save the dates, you will want to let everyone know the big news (and they will appreciate you for it!). Typically, wedding websites and save the dates have a six month lead time, while newspaper announcements are submitted two to three months out from your wedding date.

Finally - The engagement party!

Traditionally held as a way to introduce the two families together, an engagement party is the perfect opportunity to take a break from the planning and truly celebrate this special time together as bride and groom to be. The couple’s parents typically take the lead on this intimate event which could be a cocktail party, outdoor picnic, or even a honeymoon destination inspired soiree. Four to six months out is typical.

Helpful Tip: Your engagement party is another opportunity to test drive vendors before signing them on for the main event. Take your wedding cake for instance. Gaye of Branch Bakery in Yadkinville recommends cupcakes as a great go-to way to try various flavor combinations during your engagement party and see what resonates best with your guests.

Like many other areas of the country, Forsyth County has not always offered a lot for brides in the area of wedding and wedding reception venues. Ten years ago, there were only a few options for local brides, aside from the local country club or church reception hall. Luckily, that has all changed!

There is no real explanation for it other than the comfort, convenience and benefit of planning a wedding close to home.

This area is known historically as the home of Old Salem and the birthplace of Hanesbrands, Texas Pete and Krispy Kreme, to name a few. The history of an area is what makes it unique, so why not combine all the wonderful traits of Forsyth County while celebrating your special day at the recently opened historical masterpiece known as WinMock at Kinderton.

Situated between Winston-Salem and Mocksville, WinMock was once part of the estate of former R.J. Reynolds Tobacco president, S. Clay Williams, and was known as 12

WinMock Farms. It served as one of the largest dairies in North Carolina, and later as an 850-acre farm until being sold in the late 1980s for commercial development use.

Wanting to preserve the historical aspects of the property’s big, rounded red roof barn and give the people of Forsyth County a beautifully unique location for social functions, events, meetings and unforgettable weddings, Sterling Events Group decided to finance the restoration. “WinMock was created with nothing but events in mind,” said Tabatha Renegar, managing director. “The attention to detail is remarkable and years of eventplanning experience are being poured into WinMock. All that has been learned about what makes a venue top notch is transferring into this amazing space. WinMock’s beauty, charm and understated elegance speaks for itself.”

had reserved it as the location. They knew WinMock’s warmth, breathtaking architecture and high level of customer service would thrill their guests.

Aside from its beauty and charm, WinMock is very versatile. Whether your wedding is small and intimate for 50 guests or large and ornate for 1,500 guests, WinMock can accommodate. The renovated barn includes two dining rooms, eight meeting rooms, a luxurious, private dressing room for the bride, and a well-appointed groom’s room.

Outdoors, guests can enjoy two terraces which can host a combined 800 guests who will enjoy the spectacular rounded red roof backdrop of the barn. But that’s not all.

The second floor of the barn is the pièce de résistance, otherwise known as The Loft. With more than 5,000 square feet of space, The Loft is highlighted by 30-foot gothic arches and exposed wooden beams. Unlike most grand ballrooms, the one-of-akind design of The Loft allows for the absence of pillars and columns that normally take away from the space and maneuverability of a venue.

Perhaps the best feature of an event at WinMock is the freedom brides and grooms are given in the planning process. “Brides can expect to feel relaxed, not typically a word associated with weddings,” said Tabatha. “The venue options for ceremonies and receptions will give them an opportunity to truly customize their day.” Many locations force brides to use a specific caterer, only allow a certain number of photos, restrict alcohol to beer and wine, or eliminate the use of candles and rose petals.

Meet Jenna and Adam —April 16, 2011

bride wore a stunning dress from Dawn’s Bridal that was accented with her grandmother’s headpiece that served the dual purpose of being her ‘something old’ and ‘something borrowed.’ The traditional ceremony was followed by a gorgeous reception at .

Choosing a venue was a critical part of the planning process, because being sports enthusiasts, Adam and Jenna wanted a location that was reflective of their personalities.

dam and Jenna were together for six years when he surprised her with an engagement ring on June 5, 2010.

Adam, a med student at , and Jenna, a speech therapist, spent 10 months planning their wedding. They were committed to creating their personal vision so Jenna enlisted the help of her mother, Barb, to create their special day.

The ceremony was held at on April 16th. When the bridesmaids and groomsmen appeared, the ladies were dressed in dark purple dresses while the men wore black pinstriped suits with pewter vests and ties. The

Barb shared, “We decided on the smashed potato bar with fixings in martini glasses, which was a huge hit.

We also had a fajita station and an oriental stir-fry station; people are still talking about the asparagus and asiago in phyllo dough.”

The bride and groom danced their first dance to “Wonderful Tonight,” by Eric Clapton and in the words of Jenna, “It was perfect.” She had hoped to create a wedding where the details were so seamless, she could enjoy her day. accomplished. Creating ‘The Brady Bunch’ in Real Life

Step-families or blended families were not so much the ‘norm’ back when ‘The Brady Bunch’ hit television screens in the ‘70’s, but today, 65% of remarriages include children from previous relationships. While everything doesn’t always go as smoothly as Carol and Mike Brady made it look, with forethought, patience and understanding, blended families can be a blessing.

Adjusting to Growing Pains When Jennie and Terry Hess decided to get married and blend their families, they were fairly well prepared for the growing pains and changes ahead of them. “Terry and I dated 3 years before we got married.

With 5 children ranging in age from 9 to 15, we hoped that they would see how much we loved each other and embrace that each parent was happy.

We knew they would have concerns, but we wanted them to know that the step-parent was their parent’s new partner, not a replacement for their other parent,” recalled Jennie.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall Before taking that walk down the aisle, Jennie and Terry made sure 20

they were on the same page in coparenting. “We decided to be a united front with house rules, but to allow each parent to discipline their own children as much as possible. There are times when the step-parent needs to step in for support, but we emphasize respect for each other, above all else. Without the two of us being of the same mind, everything would fall apart,” commented Jennie.

A Sound Foundation At the foundation of any blended family is the marriage of two people who have decided to commit to each other and to the new family they are forming. For the Hess family, the love of Jennie and Terry are the base of their family.

“Overall, the transition of blending my three children, Mack, Madeline and Charlotte, with Terry’s children, Claire and Christopher, has gone well. We really do feel the children see our love and want us to be happy.

We have learned how to specifically help each child, as they are all different with their own personalities, and they all know that our love as a parent for them individually has not changed at all. We still spend time doing what is important to them one on one, but we balance that with blended family time,” Jennie said.

So, although TV sitcoms can make the merging of families look simple, at the heart of any blended family is a couple who has made a commitment to loving each other, the children, and the role of stepparents.

You have thought about the dress, the reception, your guests, invitations, and the cake, but have you thought about how you want to look in your pictures?

Once you have that golden number in your mind, you need to decide which elements of your wedding you deem the most important. There are dozens of online wedding calculators that will allow you to estimate how much you can spend in each area without exceeding your budget, but like everything else, even the best laid plans can change, so be prepared to make sure you don’t overdo it!

Some brides focus on the dress, some on the invitations, some on the photographer and some on the reception. You have to decide what is most important to you. Once you find an area or two in which to splurge, there are creative ways to minimize costs in the others without your guests catching on!

If you decide to go all out on hiring the best photographer with the highest price tag, consider making your own save the dates using paper and ribbon from a local craft store or going to a sample sale to find the perfect dress at a deep discount.

Should you decide to splurge on invitations, you might consider making your own bridesmaids bouquets with flowers you ordered from a wholesale store to match your professionally done bouquet and centerpieces.

No matter where you place importance, there will be other areas where you can save. Even if you don’t have a single creative bone in your body, chances are that someone you know does and wants nothing more than to help you with your big day.

So, set a budget everyone involved is comfortable with, leave room for those unforeseen additions and let the deposits begin!

hen it comes to your wedding day, the goal is to not only look stunning to everyone in attendance, but to take your groom’s breath away!

When you choose your gown, consider the following suggestions: Don’t worry about trends, as much as what works for your unique body type.

Necklines can make the difference! For example, a wellendowed woman may find a sweetheart neckline works better for her figure than a bateau line.

One-shouldered dresses should be considered, especially by those who want couture styling.

Consider your venue before you shop for your dream dress!

Some churches may have certain dress policies and you certainly wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

Consider a wrap or a bolero if that would make the difference.

All dresses are customizable, but none are created specific to your measurements (unless you are willing to pay substantially more for that level of customizing!). Allow for alteration costs in your budget; ask for an estimate before you commit to buy.

Speaking of alterations, make sure you have all your undergarments and the shoes you will wear when you go in for fittings.

There’s something to be said for limiting your choices. Wedding dress shopping (in person or browsing through magazines) can be overwhelming! When you find the dress that you love and that looks great on you, stop, drop (your credit card), and buy. Move on to the next aspect of your wedding plans!

Most of all, stay open minded. You may be dreaming of a certain style, but find that another will suit you better.

First, how many guests you are thinking of inviting, which breaks down to about one attendant for every 40-50 guests, and second, how many attendants you want to ‘stand up’ for you. Remember – it is not necessary that the bride and groom have the same number of attendants.

The most popular choice for wedding attendants is close friends and family members. Don’t feel that because you were in a friend’s wedding that you have to choose that person to be in yours. Keep in mind that these people should be those that you have a close tie to at the time of the wedding.

Recent trends have been to have only siblings involved in a wedding, limiting the hurt feelings that can occur among other family and friends.

It is preferable to ask someone to be an attendant in person, but if that is not possible, over the phone is fine. In addition to scheduling a meeting early, it is equally important to come prepared. “It is best to pick a venue and color scheme before meeting with the florist,” said Amy Dunlap, owner of Amy Lynne Originals. “The florist can help figure out the style, but it is helpful to have these decisions made before the initial consultation.

Although most florists can accomplish any style, it is probably a better fit if you pick a florist that gives a first impression that coincides with the style you like.

I try very hard to listen to what the bride wants and then form my ideas around hers. I want to include a bride in the process, not just tell her what I think she needs. Everyone has their own authentic style, it is my job to work with the client to unveil it and then showcase it with beautiful floral designs!”

If you are not sure of what you want, there are others ways to prepare yourself for the meeting.

“Bring swatches, pictures and any other objects that will help portray your vision,” said Dahl. “You should expect five things from your floral designer: Quality, Creativity, Service, Cost and Convenience. By Meghan Corbett There are certain things that stick out at every wedding. Some are remembered because they were spectacular, and some are remembered because they were terrible. One element that can be looked back on by your guests for many years to come, for better or for worse, is the food.

Depending on the time of day in which your reception takes place, there are certain expectations as to how much and what type of food you should serve your guests. Luckily, this is another responsibility you can look to the professionals to handle – but don’t procrastinate!

“The single most important thing is to select a venue for wedding events as soon as possible after the engagement,” said Pam Welker, coowner of Catered Affairs at Deacon Tower. “We advise our clients to select a venue that suits their own tastes and needs, as well as those of their wedding guests. Based on the venue and budget, we advise clients whether to have a sit-down dinner, buffet or cocktail party. Another big factor is the time of day, and catering for afternoon weddings is often less expensive than evening weddings 40

that require a more formal dinner.”

It is important that, when selecting your venue, you have an idea about how many guests you are expecting. If you plan to have a small, intimate wedding, there are dozens of options to suit your needs, but if you think you will have several hundred guests, you must have a large venue and a caterer who can handle the event.

“Facility is a big part in accommodating the event the bride is picturing,” said John Fulp, managing partner of Noble’s Grille.

“To go along with facility, things that will have to be rented can be a big financial hit, such as tents for an outside event or anything the bride would want in particular. It is important that a caterer is flexible to the bride’s needs and makes the event exactly what she wants and not what fits the caterer.

Entertainment Ideas Guests Will Love

Everyone knows that the wedding day is all about the bride and groom.

It’s their day to celebrate their love, their unity, their relationship, and their future; it’s the party of a lifetime held in their honor. However, it is also incumbent upon them to entertain their guests. With the average wedding reception lasting four to six hours, and wedding etiquette dictating that guests remain until the bride and groom leave, entertainment can be a challenge.

The traditional entertainment comes in the form of a DJ or a live band. If you’re a regular on the local music scene, it’s probably tempting to ask your favorite local performers to entertain at your wedding. However, performing at a club and performing at a wedding are two very different things. If the goal is to get your guests up on the dance floor, having familiar radio-friendly tunes is a must. Don’t worry – you can add a do-not-play list to your contract! We totally understand your aversion to “The Electric Slide” and “The Macarena.”

If you choose to hire a DJ or a band, be sure to see them live and in person before signing on the dotted line. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask to see footage of their work and ask for referrals! Word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools you can use when selecting your entertainment.

If you’re looking to step outside 42

the box and offer some additional and unique entertainment, here are a few fun and creative ideas: Hire a professional dance instructor for one hour, teaching your guests the basic foot work for swing dancing, the fox trot, jive, or perhaps the traditional beach-dance favorite – the shag. Join in the fun, or use this hour to get something to eat or finish up a photo session!

Let your guests play dress up! Visit the dollar store, vintage shops, Goodwill, yard sales – anywhere you can get a great deal – and buy fun props for your guests to use for photo ops! Whether you hire a photo booth or have a friend stationed at a “photo area,” your guests will enjoy hamming it up and you’ll have fun pictures to add to your wedding scrapbook.

Talk to the Arts Council! They can put you in touch with artists who might be available to offer caricatures to your guests (eh-hem, favors!) or performance artists who can contribute to the theme of your big day! Think Cirque du Soleil! A talented performance artist can emulate the feel and flavor of those exotic performances.

Think outside the box when planning your reception! Your guests are there to have fun and scheduled entertainment can help bridge gaps between traditional activities such as the cake cutting and bouquet toss. It’s also a great way to loosen up your guests, help them relax, and have the great time you want them to have!

Perhaps the two most surreal moments during the wedding ceremony: walking down the aisle to your intended, and being announced husband and wife. But what about the in-between stuff? There’s a little (or a lot, depending on the type of ceremony you plan to have) that happens in the middle.

In today’s world, the options for your ceremony are without limit. So many options are often viewed as a good thing, but it can also be overwhelming. When you plan your big day, so much focus goes into what you will wear, what your guests will eat, and how the centerpieces will be arranged.

But this...your ceremony...is what binds you together as Mr. and Mrs. and it deserves a great deal of consideration, too.

We have a few suggestions to make your ceremony beautiful and uniquely yours: 1. Think about other weddings you've been to. Was there a song that was particularly moving? Did you think the ceremony was too short or too long? What did you like about it?

2. Do you want to say traditional vows or do you want to write your own?

Choosing a venue for your wedding reception can be one of the most difficult decisions you make during your engagement. The reception will showcase your personality as a married couple, and you want your guests to have a great time!

In Forsyth County, there are many spectacular locations for the perfect reception no matter what theme, color pallete, budget, time frame or number of guests. However, just because a reception site includes the words “country club” does not mean your reception has to be ultra sophisticated with respectable music, or just because your reception takes place at a vineyard or garden does not mean you can’t have a liquor bar or fireworks. The most important thing to do after setting your wedding date and 46

picking a theme is to book your reception venue.

Some venues are reserved more than a year in advance, especially during “wedding season,” or the time between May and October, when the majority of weddings take place.

If you think you will hire a wedding planner, talk to them about local venues and have them make appointments for tours and information. If you plan to tackle the wedding yourself, don’t limit yourself to one style of wedding. Even if you have always seen yourself having a big tent outside surrounded by moonlight and fireflies, open your mind to indoor options. You may surprise yourself!

Also, make sure you know your budget before the search begins.

The reception typically runs about 50% of your total wedding budget, so it is important to have that magic number in mind when you visit reception sites.

Regardless of your style or opinions, this is a decision that is important to make together. It is not just one of the biggest days of your life; it is one of the biggest for your groom as well!

But wait! What about a place to live after you say “I do”? Buying a house for the first time can be unnerving, but Elizabeth Swicegood and her partner, Brenda Bellomo, of The Swicegood Group may be the ones to walk you through the big purchase.

“We specialize in going the extra mile,” said Brenda Bellomo, who works in the more changing aspects of the real estate market, while Elizabeth Swicegood’s marketing savvy and skillful negotiation skills are what set her apart from the competition.

Bellomo suggests you start by interviewing a prospective agent to find the one who will help you achieve the results you deserve.

Often, first-time home owners respond emotionally to a home but a good realtor will steer their clients to a good value. For example, resale is a key factor to consider, as many young couples will sell their first home within three years. Bellomo tells clients to purchase a home with the eyes wide open, recommending a property that needs decorating updates, rather than major remodeling. New homeowners don’t always know what repairs are crucial and what aren’t, so it is highly advised to have a home inspection done.

Financing is another issue. First, shop around for a good mortgage 56

broker or lender.

In this market it is easier to find good deals, so why not take advantage of it?

Second, realize the lender wants to see twelve months of cancelled rent checks, three months of bank statements, two years of W-2 forms, and some form of identification. The lender will take your financial information and crunch the numbers to tell you how large a mortgage you can qualify for.

Based on the mortgage lender’s numbers, you will become “prequalified” for a particular home.

Bellomo says buyers should look for several things when they go to buy: 1. Curb appeal.

2. Three bedroom, two bathroom home or, for condominiums, a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom home.

3. Adequate-sized rooms.

4. Good yard.

5. Floor plan that flows. Avoid floor plans that have “empty” rooms that you don’t know how to use.

6. Copy of covenants and restrictions, a legal document laying out what is and isn’t allowed in the neighborhood.

A Little Advice from the Mother of the Bride

I love being the mother of three girls, umm… women. They are my best friends. Like most little girls, one of their favorite activities was playing dress up — especially when they went to visit their grandmother, Honey. She always had plenty of fun clothing and accessory items to turn them into brides. I watched them in their “wedding gowns” and pictured them all grown up and getting married for real. If only, when the time came, it would have been as simple and inexpensive as pulling items out of a closet. Having now gone through the process three times, I have some advice to keep it

that costs $2,500, don’t compromise your budget. Find places to save elsewhere. Also, put money into a miscellaneous category. This will help when you are hit with the unforeseen, but inevitable, extra costs.

The minute the date is set, book the church, or venue, and reception site. Popular places get booked months, sometimes a year or more in advance. If not reserved early, you may find that you have to change the date to get that special location.

Then it’s time to start locking down other facets: the photographer, the florist, the caterer, the cake designer, the musicians, etc. A good notebook-

By Denise Tucker and Meghan Corbett Review contracts and double check with vendors to ensure that you and they are on the same page; prepare your tip envelopes – be sure to remember your officiate, chauffer, bartender, and anyone else you recognize through gratuities.

Create an itinerary of the day and make sure everyone who plays a role in the wedding has a copy, including your vendors. Make sure phone numbers and contact names are on the list!

If you’ve planned an outdoor wedding, be sure you’ve made a contingency plan in the event of rain. And have some fun, colorful umbrellas on hand! If it does rain, don’t stress out – in some cultures, rain on a wedding day is a sign of good luck!

Prepare an emergency “day-of” kit that includes a sewing kit, deodorant, hair spray, feminine products, etc… whatever you think you (or your bridesmaids) might need!

Find a few moments of downtime every day – even if only for fifteen minutes where you can relax and unwind.

Have a plan in place for eating at your reception. If you are having a buffet-style dinner, it can be hard to find time to eat while speaking to guests, so have your venue set up a

table for you and your groom away from the reception, so you can sneak a small plate before your guests know you’ve arrived!

Get a great night’s sleep. Use homeopathic remedies if you’re restless – warm milk, relaxing music, hot bath… Avoid sleeping pills as they may leave you groggy on your wedding day, especially if you’re not accustomed to taking them.

Make appointments to have your gown and bouquet preserved after the wedding!

Make sure you plan and pack for your honeymoon trip like you would any other. Don’t leave your make-up or any daily necessity at home because it was in your emergency kit – you’ll miss it! And if you are flying to your destination, make sure you have everything you need in your checked luggage so you don’t have to throw away a whole bottle of sunscreen just because you threw it into your carry-on at the last minute! Also, if you’re changing your name, as tempting as it will be, don’t make your reservations in your married name! Though you will be legally wed, your name won’t be legally changed until you submit your paperwork to the Social Security Administration.

Breathe… and remember: this is about joining your life with the one you love best.
