alk to him about it. It can be very frustrating and overwhelming when you feel that you are planning your wedding without the input of your partner – after all, you value his opinion most. He may feel that his work is now done (he proposed, right?). Involve your fiancé in things that he may have interest. If he loves music, ask him to talk to you about songs that he wants to incorporate into the day.

Perhaps he could give his input to the menu and drink selections of the event (who doesn’t love talking about food and drinks?!). In the end, your wedding is a celebration of the two of you and letting him know that you want to plan this together is important to you. What’s important to you should be important to him, too, but he may not realize this unless you tell him.

Ever since he proposed, my fiancé has had no interest in our wedding plans. Do you have any suggestions on how to get him involved?

SVP’ing to a wedding is a big deal.

Not only because a wedding is such an important event to the bride and the groom, but also because, logistically, planning a wedding can be very intensive.

The hosts of the wedding are negotiating contracts, working on seating charts and estimating quantities all based on their guest list and the RSVPs that are returned to them. That being said, always be prompt with your response as a courtesy. But, we understand, things happen! As soon as you realize that your RSVP is late, contact the couple via phone, apologize and let them know if you are able to attend their event.

Oh, no! As I was clearing off my desk, I noticed that the RSVP for a wedding I am invited to was never mailed. It’s now late. What do I do?

W

hen Carrie Hayes and Eric Bjorkquist were planning their March 30, 2013 wedding, they knew a few things they wanted to make their day special: a local setting, a gathering of family and friends, North Carolina barbecue, and Elvis. “We wanted our wedding to reflect those things and activities in our lives that we love and enjoy. Eric and I like to travel the state, following The Bar-BQue Trail, so Bibs Downtown was our caterer.

Having our family and friends with us was important so we chose WinMock at Kinderton, a local, intimate setting for our wedding ceremony and reception. Eric and I made our day extra special by having a surprise appearance by Taylor Vaden, an Elvis impersonator,” said Carrie. “From a young age, I have been a huge Elvis fan. Although a surprise appearance from ‘Elvis,’ courtesy of my mom, was hard to keep under wraps, the look on my face was worth it. To be able to dance with Eric, my dad and Elvis all on the same day was a dream come true,” Carrie recalled.

The couple’s theme of surrounding themselves with the love of family and friends, continued up until the moment they rode away to begin their new life together. “We left the reception in my grandfather’s restored 1990 Ford Bronco, much like the one that Eric drives. Our day was truly our day and we loved every minute of it,” Carrie stated.

The Wedding Checklist

10 – 12 months from the date • Announce your engagement to your parents, family, and friends. Update your Facebook status to “Engaged.”

• Think about your overall theme – are you dreaming of a rustic, country-style wedding or a posh, sophisticated event? Do you dream of a traditional ceremony or are you looking for outside-the-box wedding ideas?

• Start working on your guest list.

• Pick the time of day / night for the wedding.

• Secure a church and / or reception venue.

• Choose your bridal party.

• Determine your wedding budget.

• Hire a wedding planner.

• Make a list of vendors (florists, caterers, musicians, etc.) and begin scheduling appointments.

8 – 10 months from the date • Begin shopping for a wedding dress (be sure to budget for alterations and undergarments).

• Shop and select bridesmaid dresses.

• Sign contracts and make initial deposits to reserve vendors for the big day.

• Start thinking about a honeymoon destination and work on travel plans.

• Have engagement pictures taken.

4 – 7 months from the date • Send ‘save the date’ notices to let guests know the date, time, and location of the wedding.

• Begin planning the rehearsal dinner.

• Schedule appointments for haircuts, color, wedding-day styling, manicures, pedicures, massages, and other beauty treatments.

• Register for gifts.

• Coordinate wedding transportation.

• Select and order attire for the groom and groomsmen.

• Purchase the wedding rings.

• Reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for out of town guests.

• Buy wedding-party gifts.

• Decide on and order wedding favors.

nce you’ve chosen the date, the following serves as a general guideline for all the todo’s as you count down to your wedding day!

2 – 3 months from the date • Discuss photography wants with the photographer.

• Discuss the menu with the caterer.

• Meet with your wedding officiate to discuss ceremony details.

• Write your vows, if you choose to write your own.

• Mail the wedding invitations.

• Apply for marriage license up to 60 days prior to the wedding date.

1 month from the date • Schedule a final gown fitting.

• Confirm that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have everything they need and are aware of the schedule of events.

• Confirm arrival and delivery times from all of your vendors.

• Have your wedding program printed.

• Create welcome bags for your out-of-town guests and have them delivered to the hotel.

• Write thank you notes as you receive gifts.

• Confirm attendance of guests who have not RSVP’d.

• Provide caterer with the final head count.

eddings and insurance aren’t two topics one normally likes to put together in the same sentence, but since the average wedding has a price tag of around $27,000, it’s a smart investment. Consider these FAQs about wedding-day insurance: • What does it cover?

Wedding day insurance can cover those unforeseeable situations such as weather, damage to attire, gifts, etc., as well as the cost of the wedding should the event need to be cancelled due to circumstances beyond your control.

• Why should I budget for this?

No one can predict the future.

Even if you aren’t planning an outdoor wedding, things happen.

What would you do if, the day before your wedding, a pipe broke at your reception hall, leaving the facility flooded? Or, if you were in an accident the week before the wedding and on crutches?

• Aren’t my vendors covered?

More than likely, yes. But, your vendors have to look out for themselves, too. If your wedding has to be rescheduled due to that faulty pipe, the caterer will have already invested money in the food they planned to prepare for your guests.

• How much is wedding insurance?

Like any other policy, the price depends on you and how much coverage you think you need.

Do your homework. Decide if it’s right for you. Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but with so much money being spent on your perfect day, you’ll probably plan easier knowing that you have a safety net in the event anything goes wrong.

Emily Hunter and Clayton Naylor

A

fter a romantic proposal at the top of the lighthouse on Cape Hatteras, Emily Hunter and Clay Naylor began planning their September 22, 2012 wedding, making sure that the ceremony focused on the importance of family. “Having our family and friends with us, helping with the planning and on the day of the wedding, meant so much to us. We were married at First Baptist Church in Mocksville, where many of Clay’s family have been married, making it a very special place to us,” said Emily. With a garden feel and pink and butter cream yellow adorning the church, guests at the wedding were seated as instrumental versions of Disney love songs played, setting the tone for the day. “Family is very important to Clay and me, so we honored our parents and grandparents during the ceremony by giving them a rose and a kiss. Before we said our vows, our friend Philip sang “Tupelo Honey”the first song we had ever danced to while we were dating.” The reception at the Red Barn in Tanglewood was wonderful with catering by Visions Catering, and we got a surprise when ‘Legends of Beach’ band performed our favorite beach songs,” Emily recalled.

Guests were treated to Jelly Belly jelly beans in a monogrammed box with the newlyweds’ initials to take home at the end of the evening. “Even with a few things that didn’t go as expected, the day went just as it should have and we enjoyed every minute. I had decided that I was going to take the day as it came and not sweat the small stuff.

How to Budget Your Wedding Dollars

he average wedding costs $27,000. And while that seems like a lot of money, without proper planning and budgeting, it can disappear very quickly! Much will depend on your personal priorities. Even before you’ve begun price comparisons, you may already know that a phenomenal dress will mean more to you than flowers, while a fantastic band may mean more to your fiancé than extra hors d'oeuvres on the menu.

So, while these are just some averages, they will help serve as a framework for you as write your budget: 22

• 45% for the reception venue, catering, and wedding cake • 10% for photography • 10% for flowers / decor • 10% for music / entertainment • 10% for wedding dress and groom’s tuxedo • 5% for transportation • 4% for invitations and programs • 3% for your ceremony site, if it is different from your reception • 3% for bridal party gifts, wedding license, and other miscellaneous expenses Once you have budgeted, don’t forget to include details like the cost of alterations when you go dress shopping, or the money you need to set aside for tips! Whatever you do, be sure to check your expenses against your budget often to make sure you stay on track!

A Guy's View on Bridal Shows

A

s a guy, you want to support the love of your life, but you don’t know a Vera Wang from a Monique Lhuillier (those are bridal gown designers - thanks Google!). And… don’t all those floral arrangements basically look the same? Despite your ignorance, many reasons abound for you to attend the Bridal Show at BB&T Ballpark.

• Two words: cake samples.

OK, four words: LOTS OF cake samples.

• You can play with the chocolate fountain. Some vendor is bound to have one.

• You can discuss titillating bachelorette parties with vendors of that stripe while your fiancée peruses boring stuff like flowers.

• You can discuss the relative merits of various rap and hip hop emcees with the DJs in attendance.

• You can indulge your feminine side. It’s OK to admit you have one. Really.

• You can find out if any area hotels have cool stuff like heart-shaped Jacuzzis in their bridal suites.

• Five more words: Lots of finger food samples.

• If you make it through the event without scowling, frowning, or rolling your eyes, your bride-to-be will be likely to express her gratitude.

• And finally, you can tell your friends later that you spent the weekend at the ballpark.

FAQ: Invitations

W

hen it comes to knowing what needs to be asked in regard to invitations, the best first step to take is to ask the experts.

Few people know more about invitations than the wonderful women of Note Worthy, so we went straight to the source to compile a list of the most frequently asked questions.

What do I say on my invitation?

That depends on a lot of variables such as the hosts, location, time, formality, etc. Luckily, all of our invitation experts are trained on how to word your invitations, reception cards and reply cards.

We also have several etiquette books to fall back on if there are any particular questions.

How long does it take to order invitations?

Typically the process takes a total of about three weeks. We recommend an appointment so that you can come in and sit down with an invitation expert and look at all your options. That process can take up to two hours or longer, especially if you haven't looked before. Once you decide on your invitation suite and place your order, we will send you a digital image proof within 2-3 business days. It's important to approve the proof as soon as possible to prevent the delay of the actual printing and shipping of your invitation. You can make changes (a fee for a new proof is involved) and once you are happy with the final product, your invitation suite ships in two weeks!

How much will my postage be?

We don't know the exact amount until all the pieces are printed and you have assembled one complete invitation. Some of the invitations we already know will require additional postage up front because of size or paper weight. We suggest that our brides take one assembled invitation to the post office to have it weighed and measured for the exact postage. This should help you avoid buying the wrong postage amount.

Do you offer calligraphy?

We have several vendors in town that we recommend and we will be happy to refer you.

Elizabeth Garner and Calen Butler

T

here’s no doubt that bride Elizabeth Garner knows about bringing spice to life since her family’s business is TW Garner, makers of Texas Pete Hot Sauce.

The Garner family has a long history and love of Winston-Salem, so when Elizabeth Garner and Calen Butler decided to get married, they knew that the city of Winston-Salem would play a major role. “We both grew up in WinstonSalem and most of our family and friends are from the area, so keeping our wedding local was important to us. The celebrations surrounding our wedding were at Forsyth Country Club, Piedmont Club and Graylyn. Getting married at Centenary United Methodist Church was very special because the church is dear to our hearts and because Elizabeth’s father is buried there,” said Calen. But the location wasn’t the only remembrance of family in this wedding. “There was a piece of Elizabeth’s father’s dress shirt stitched into her dress since he is no longer around to walk her down the aisle. This was her ‘something blue.’ My family was also honored by Elizabeth as she carried the rosary that both my mother and grandmother walked down the aisle with on their wedding days,” Calen commented.

Making the ceremony and reception a little extra special were the favors of custom-made bottles of Texas Pete for the guests that they could take home and have as a fond memory of Elizabeth and Calen’s wedding.

Choosing Your Wedding Party

electing your wedding party can be tricky…very tricky!

Feelings can get hurt, budgets can be blown and decision-making can get out of hand quickly. Here are a few simple steps to take to avoid the headaches: • Pick the magic number. Small wedding party? Large wedding party? Make that decision first, and it may make the selection process a lot easier!

• Bridesmen and groomsmaids. I believe this is self-explanatory, and yes, completely acceptable!

• Consider other roles. If there is someone you would like to be a part of the day who is too young or too old to be in the wedding party, cannot afford to buy a dress or rent a tuxedo, consider other roles such as readings, greeters or program attendants that can be easily altered if necessary.

• Avoid obligatory invites. If you find yourself saying, “Well, I was in her wedding, so…” stop yourself immediately! This is your day, and you deserve to have exactly who you want in your wedding party…whether or not that includes your former co-worker whom you haven’t spoken to in a few years.

There are a number of reasons you’ll want to invest in bridal portraits. Namely, it gives you the opportunity to work with your photographer some more before the big day (assuming you’ve also worked together on your engagement sessions). It also gives you the opportunity to enjoy that fabulous dress just a bit more! While your photographer will undoubtedly take some pictures of you alone at the wedding, bridal portraits give you the opportunity to enjoy your time as a bride without the pressure of guests waiting for you at the reception.

When should I schedule them?

Your bridal portraits should be scheduled 4 – 6 weeks before the wedding. If you want to have a portrait framed and displayed at the reception, this gives your photographer enough time to edit your images and for you to choose your portrait.

Choosing a Veil

By Meghan Corbett eils can range in length from around 20 inches to as long as 108 inches, so figuring out what is right for you can be a challenge, to say the least. Veils can be expensive, and in most cases, the longer the veil, the higher the price. To make the right choice, there are several key elements to consider.

• Your dress – If your dress has a lot of detail on the back, a veil that covers it all up is not for you. Consider a shorter veil or a long, sheer veil that will allow special details to show through.

• Your style – Have you always been creative with your style? Try a fascinator or birdcage veil. Do you consider yourself to be traditional and sophisticated?

Think along the lines of a long, flowing cathedral veil that will extend beyond the back of your dress for extra drama down the aisle.

• Color – You want your veil to match your dress.

An ivory dress needs an ivory veil. Some brides try to get creative with bright trim or colorful veils, but most regret it when they see the photos.

• Your face shape and body type – Some styles of veils will elongate a round face or add height to flat hair.

Additionally, a long veil will help to lengthen brides with a large bust while larger body types are better suited to narrow veils that will avoid extra width.

• Consider wedding location – If you are getting married on the beach, a long veil dragging in the sand is a bad idea; but if you are getting married in an ornate church, a long veil can highlight a gorgeous stone aisle.

Kierston Kahrs and John Hendricks

S

imple, elegant, and do-it-yourself, ‘take me out to the ballgame” wedding…Not quite, but when the groom is a Major League baseball recruiter, a little bit of the game has to be part of your special day.

After dating for eight years and having an engagement of over a year, Kierston and John knew just what they wanted their wedding to be. “We have supportive family and friends, so staying within our community was important to us; we didn’t want anyone to miss the wedding,” recalled Kierston. With the setting of The Messinger Room in Salisbury, NC, the couple chose the rich colors of purple, brown, bronze and gold for their January 5, 2013 wedding, and Kierston added her personal touch and graphic artist’s talent to the preparations.

“I made the invitations that we sent to our guests and I also was my own florist. Making the bouquets and boutonnières gave our attendees a great take home gift. Bringing the

‘do-it-yourself’ to our wedding really made the day a little extra special” Kierston said.

Following the wedding, guests were treated to classic rock and oldies spun by The Charlotte DJ Company. “The songs we chose were ones that make you want to get up and dance,” commented Kierston. When guests took a break from the dance floor, they were treated to a baseball themed candy buffet. “With peanuts, a popcorn machine, nostalgic candy and Cracker Jacks, John’s love of baseball was part of the day and everyone enjoyed the baseball mugs we gave out as our guests’ favors,” commented Kierston.

Recommended To-Do’s: Break in your shoes. If you do decide on a new heel size, practice walking in them to ensure you’re comfortable.

Rough up the bottoms with sandpaper to avoid slipping, especially if you’re planning to use a runner down the aisle.

Your Perfect Gown

inding the perfect gown – yes, the one you’ve dreamed of since childhood – is not always the simplest task. That’s because one size does not fit all – neither does one style, one fabric or even one shade of white. Feeling like a princess as you glide down the aisle is your ultimate goal – and that means choosing the right look for your body type! Keep in mind these nuggets of fashion wisdom:

• Make peace with your body type – and remember that, even if you drop 10 pounds, your basic shape won’t change before the big day.

• White can also mean cream, ecru or offwhite and shades may vary. Find the right version of “white” for your skintone.

• Find the perfect undergarments for your dress style – and wear them for every fitting.

• Not everyone can wear strapless. If you have the figure for it, make sure it is fitted to perfection (no gaps up top!).

• If you’re large-busted, shy away from anything too revealing. Choose a sweetheart neckline over one that’s cut straight across, and remember that the right bra is a must.

• If you are pear shaped, try an A-line style gown – not a sheath. Look for a flattering Vneckline and a bodice with accents to draw the eye upward.

• Full figured brides will find A-line skirts or empire waists flattering, but make sure the gown is a good fit and not too loose. Extra fabric adds extra width. Satin and taffeta are ideal – don’t select anything too clingy.

• If your arms aren’t as toned as you’d like them to be, opt for long or three-quarter sleeves in a romantic sheer fabric.

• If you have the figure to pull off a glamorous strapless look, you may want to add an elegant bolero jacket or shawl to complement your ensemble.

• Taller brides: keep your embellishment to a minimum. Think sleek and sophisticated.

• Petite brides: remember a calf-length gown can make your legs look even shorter. Wear it long … or mini. Look for a natural waist, too, not a drop waist or empire waist that would look out of proportion.

• If you’re small busted, add interest to the “top” of your gown with ruching on the bodice.

• No matter what your size or style, move around in your gown (sit, stand, bend) during your fittings to make sure you are comfortable at every angle. Then, a smashing entrance on the big day is guaranteed!

Emily Smith and Dustin Jennings

or Emily Smith and Dustin Jennings, staying true to who they are as a couple was important as they planned their March 9, 2013 wedding. “Dustin and I are very relaxed and casual and we wanted our wedding to have the same feel, and share with our family and friends what makes us special as a couple. As a Clemson graduate, I wanted the color orange as part of our color scheme, which took a little convincing, but when it was paired with the color purple and wildflowers, everything came together beautifully,” recalled Emily. With the ceremony held at Emily’s home church, Lewisville United Methodist Church, Emily and Dustin added a few more sentimental touches to their special day, bringing their families close. “Our rings were carried down the aisle in an old family box and I wore my mother’s veil and mother-in-law’s pearl earrings.

Dustin’s brother was going to be a groomsman, but he is serving in Germany with the Air Force so we had the ceremony on Skype so he and his family could be part of the day,” Emily said.

The love of family was woven throughout Emily and Dustin’s special day. With WinMock at Kinderton as the gathering place for both rehearsal dinner and wedding reception, pictures of Emily and Dustin from childhood to the present were in the alcoves of the barn at WinMock. The weekend was one that reflected the warmth of Emily and Dustin, keeping the overall theme one of casual, relaxed elegance.

Videographers may be at the top of your potential chopping-block list, but you may want to reconsider.

• You may think, “We’ll just hold on to those memories. We don’t need a video of them.”

Odds are, you’ll be so nervous at your wedding that you won’t remember the words “I do,” much less all the activity going on around you…not to mention all the behind-thescenes action.

• You may think, “My old college roommate can just take the videos.”

Well, what do you remember most about that guy? His ability to take seamless, artful videos or his proficiency at beer pong?

• You may think, “No, really, my aunt/mom/sister is awesome at taking videos.

Planning the Ceremony

There are copious details from where and when, to outfitting the bridesmaids and groomsmen, to the registry, to the seemingly never ending list of reception decisions and on and on. But what about the ceremony itself? Consider the following when meeting with your wedding officiant: • Is he/she available for your chosen date and location?

• If you are marrying in a house of worship, find out if there are any requirements or restrictions that might impact some decisions.

What is the earliest/latest hour a wedding can be scheduled? Does the program need to be

pre-approved? Are there limits on photography or filming during the ceremony? What about music, candles, communion, readings, a unity celebration, an aisle runner, etc? Think of all the elements you hope to include and discuss them at the beginning so you aren't surprised if they are unacceptable.

• If marrying outside a religious venue, does your site allow the officiant more flexibility in the ceremony?

• Will there be a microphone so guests in the last rows can hear the ceremony?

• Providing the officiant with some personal anecdotes/information (nothing embarrassing) will allow him/her to make the ceremony more meaningful.

W

ith an ‘unofficial theme’ of ‘Bling in the Barn,’ Allie Wellington and Tyler Nunley incorporated their love of not only animals, but of North Carolina, with the wedding location of Adaumont Farm in Trinity, NC. “Having our wedding locally meant so much since many of our family and friends live in the area, but for those out of town guests, we wanted them to have a great taste of what North Carolina has to offer. Tyler and I felt the Adaumont Farm, owned and operated by Kyle and Pattie Petty, was perfect and fitting since we both have a passion for animals,” said Allie. Having the barn adorned in the colors of aqua, pink and green, brought the setting to life and made the day all that Allie and Tyler had imagined it would be. The couple’s wedding was made even more special by the touches throughout the wedding in honor of Allie’s father.

“My dad passed away 8 years ago, so we wanted to include him in memory as much as we could in the ceremony. We placed a rose in the chair where he would’ve been next to my mom, also putting my lucky locket with his picture inside in my bouquet and having a memorial for him in our wedding program,” Allie commented. After two years of planning, Allie and Tyler definitely had the wedding of their dreams and pulled off the ‘Bling in the Barn’ without a glitch, sending their guests home with a little bit of NC….mason jars filled with the ‘fixins’ for sweet tea.

hoosing the music at your ceremony is just the tip of the iceberg because you also have to choose how that music is played. Whether you hire a quartet, utilize a church organ, or put your trust in a newly burned CD, the earlier you and your fiancé make the decisions, the better.

Some aspects of weddings have become so predictable, they are no longer considered sweet and romantic, but dull and lacking the personality so many people enjoy in a modern wedding.

While certain ceremony classics, such as “Trumpet Voluntary,” are always beautiful, others - like “Bridal Chorus,” better known as “Here Comes the Bride” - are tired and remind most of us of the days we spent as children acting out our future weddings.

Citrus Mint Splash Ingredients 1 ½ cups sugar 2 cups loosely packed mint leaves, plus 8 large mint sprigs, lightly crushed 1 ½ cups water 2 cups loosely packed cilantro leaves, lightly crushed 1 cup fresh lemon juice 1 cup fresh lime juice Club soda Directions Combine sugar and large crushed mint sprigs with water in a medium saucepan.

Bring to a boil. Remove mint syrup from heat and let stand until cool. Strain and discard mint sprigs. In a large pitcher, mix two cups of mint leaves with crushed cilantro, lemon juice and lime juice. Add cooled mint syrup, club soda and stir. Strain into tall glasses filled with ice cubes and garnish each drink with a mint leaf. This recipe makes 10 cups; adjust servings as needed.

Different shades of the same color are quite attractive.

• The way candy is displayed on your Candy Bar can add a lot to the presentation – such as jars, bowls, vases, martini glasses – anything that suits your style.

• Tier stands are a creative way to display a variety of chocolates, cookies or fudge.

• Bride & Groom shapes dipped in white chocolate or chocolate fudge are a memorable conversation piece.

Katy Payne and David Stith

H

ometown girl Katy Payne always felt that she would move back from Charlotte, NC to Winston-Salem, but she never knew why until she met David Stith and they dated long distance for over a year. “David and I are both from the area so we knew we wanted to get married locally where all of our family and friends are. We are very family oriented and I am blessed to have had my mother and sister help me with all the wedding details. My wedding coordinators, The Perfect Pair Event Design, were great at bringing the day all together,” said Katy. With a theme of ‘preppy elegance,’ Katy and David chose the colors of navy and white for their May 18th, 2013 wedding. “My bridesmaids wore navy, groomsmen in black tuxes. Everything came together beautifully at the Broyhill Historic Event Center with navy and white table linens and mostly white flowers, accented with an abundance of candle light. The whole day had a classic and romantic feel, from beginning to end,” Katy recalled. Once Katy and David were pronounced ‘husband and wife,’ they joined their guests for ‘the biggest party of their lives!’ “Our reception menu was a reflection of us as a couple, with catering by Holly Tate and selections including sliders and shrimp and grits,” Katy stated. After dancing the night away to the tunes of DJ Todd Pegram, guests left the party with a keepsake of the day, a stemless wine glass engraved with the couple’s initial ‘S’ and wedding date as a remembrance of the special day.

ou have dreamed of having an outdoor wedding ceremony, but it is impossible to know if Mother Nature will be cooperative on your special day. When choosing a venue, plan for every weather possibility. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Can the reception site be arranged to handle the ceremony as well? If not, is there a hall, lodge, hotel, etc. near the intended site that might be able to accommodate your celebration at the last minute?

• Is there a place for the wedding party to stay fresh until the ceremony begins?

• Is there a room where guests can be kept cool/warm and/or dry while the site is changed from the ceremony to the reception?

• If the wedding and reception will be held outdoors, will there be a large tent?

Will the tent have sides in case of inclement weather? Will there be a way to provide fans, heat and/or lights? Has the area been treated for mosquitoes or other pests?

• Is there paved parking or a walkway to keep your guests from ruining their shoes?

• In case the thermometer decides to rise, plan to provide cold bottled water with a personalized label, hand-held fans and cold packs. Bright sun? Consider paper parasols.

Pray for the perfect weather day, but plan for the worst.

Hannah Van Zandt and Chase Ferrell

H

annah and Chase have a love that’s been a lifetime in the making.

Adopted from Romania, their families met at a conference of other Romanian adoptive families when they were 5 and 6, respectively.

During college, Hannah returned home from a five-month semester in London. Chase surprised her at the airport, and whisked her away to Reynolda Gardens and surprised her with a proposal.

They spent a year planning the wedding, which was held at Old Salem and officiated by the bride’s brother. Hannah shared, “We kept the wedding very casual and family oriented. Many people told us how genuine our wedding was, which was what we wanted it to be. The focus of our day was on our love story and the beginning of our life together, not how extravagant we could make our wedding.”

A special touch from the day was the planting of a gardenia bush in lieu of a unity candle. “Each of us added water and soil, a symbol of the start of our relationship together, and how much like the bush, a marriage requires the continuous addition of love to make it grow and flourish.”

Hannah and Chase’s family-oriented wedding was full of other special touches.

Hannah’s wedding set was her mother's original wedding band, as well as her father-in-law's grandmother's 2-carat diamond ring. Hannah’s other brother, who is currently serving in Afghanistan and unable to be there in person, recorded a message for the couple.

Hannah and Chase created a wedding that was based on the beginning of a marriage, not how big the wedding could be. As Hannah beautifully said, “We got married because we love each other, not because we wanted to plan a wedding.”

re you planning to buy some items for your wedding reception, thinking that you’ll use them again? Or are you planning to rent most of them?

These are important questions that will impact your wedding budget quickly.

It is increasingly common to rent, simply as a cost control measure. Let’s take a look at a few expenses.

• Linens: The quality will drive up the cost whether purchased or rented. If an overlay is planned, the cost likely doubles.

• Rental: Basic napkins start at around 0.25/each; table covers, $20/each • Purchase: $23 for a dozen napkins; $9 for a round table cover • Place Settings: Again, in many cases, basic place settings may be part of the contract with your reception site. Rented separately, a place setting can range from $5 to $10 per person and up for more elaborate settings. Purchasing is probably not practical unless your reception is informal and picnictype settings are deemed appropriate.

• Reception Tables and Seating: You may want to ensure that this expense is included in the cost of the reception site. Rented separately, the average price varies depending on the type of chair and size of table.

• Round tables with seating for 8 rent for around $75/each (including chairs) • Basic, folding chairs rent for $3/each; wooden, padded chairs for $3/each; ballroom chairs for $8/each Bottom line, unless an item is something you will use in your normal routine, rental is probably your best choice, with inclusion in contract even better.

Brittany Hutchens & Austin Groce

W

ith a theme of ‘vintage chic’ and the rich colors of berry and charcoal, Brittany Hutchens and Austin Groce made their wedding day their own with unique and personal touches. “One of my bridesmaids, Holly Reavis, and I made my bouquet and cake topper, which were made of brooches from both Austin and my family and friends. It was a way for us to have a reminder of their love for us in our home.” The couple also decided to have the wedding ceremony at the Broyhill Event Center, for a very sentimental reason. “As a 7th grade math teacher at Forbush Middle School, I knew it was meant to be when I walked into the Broyhill Center and found out it was once an elementary school, and being the first outdoor wedding there made it extra special.

One thing that was reflective of us as a couple was having Chris Hauser, our Associate Pastor at South Oak Ridge Baptist Church, officiate the wedding because of the impact he has had in both our lives and in our faith.”

So with family and friends by their side, Brittany and Austin became husband and wife on June 1st, 2013, and as she looks back she has some good advice for future brides. “Try to enjoy the whole day. Yes, it is an important time of your life, but don’t stress yourself out over the little things that no one will remember. And make sure you surround yourself with people that support you and lift you up! Make this a joyous time to remember!”

A Note on Thank You Notes

or many brides and grooms, yes, I said grooms, writing wedding thank you notes may seem like a daunting task, but it is a necessary one. However, if you follow a few notes and pointers on the process you can soon ‘make note’ that your ‘notes’ are done.

Here are some basic wedding thank you note etiquette rules: • Although the general rule is that you have 2-8 weeks to write a thank you note, it is best to send the notes out within two weeks of returning from your honeymoon.

• Take turns writing the notes with your groom and make it a time of reflecting on your special day and the wonderful memories you have.

• Make sure to write legibly and on high quality stationery, specifically mentioning how much you appreciate the gift. If the gift was monetary, do not mention the amount, just state that you will use it to purchase items that you, as a couple, really want.

As long as your gratitude is sincere and your message is timely, your note is sure to be received warmly.

Steps to Changing Your Name

he decision to change your name after the wedding is a personal choice. Below are some of the steps you’ll need to take to officially become Mrs. NewName.

• Stop by the Social Security office, taking a copy of your marriage license with you.

• Visit the DMV and get your driver’s license updated.

• Let your employer’s Human Resources Department know of your new name and provide any documentation they request.

• Contact the following to make sure your name is updated on all your important mail and documents: Utility providers, i.e., electricity, phone, water Bank and lending agencies Insurance company, including any beneficiary information Vehicle registration Voter registration Magazine subscriptions, newsletters, etc.
