This issue is very special to us… the cover and center spread feature images from Brooke and Chris Eagle’s wedding. Brooke Eagle is one of our Advertising and Marketing Assistants, as well as the daughter of publisher Keela Johnson. It was a beautiful wedding and we are proud to share details about her day with future brides. ry to remember that before you became a ‘bride-to-be,’ you were friends with the girls whom you have chosen as your attendants. Just as importantly, friends of the bride need to remember what an honor it is that you have invited them to be part of your celebration. With that being said, perhaps your friend has too much going on in her life to dedicate the appropriate amount of time and effort you are expecting of her.

Your wedding is probably one of the most important things in your life right now, but it may not be the case for her. Keep perspective and don't take it too personally. Changing the wedding date is not an option and more than likely, once you make that clear, she will adjust her schedule. If she is truly too busy to go dress shopping, don't push the outing with her. Just let her know when you plan to go and hopefully she can join you and the rest of the girls who are able to go. In the end, respect will win…and that’s a two-way street!

I recently got engaged and a friend of mine has gotten mad over a few issues, including the date I scheduled to go dress shopping, and she has also asked me to change my wedding date because it conflicts with her schedule. I'm not sure how to handle her. I don't want to become a bridezilla about it, because I want our friendship to endure beyond the wedding.

But her requests are getting unreasonable. Advice?

I am a supervisor to about 15 employees. I've decided to invite my employees, because they are all so excited for me, but do I have to invite their spouses? I'd rather my out-oftown guests have a guest to bring with them so they are not alone at the wedding, but these folks are all friends.

There are pros and cons to both short and long engagements…you just have to decide what works best for you!

Engagement…Short or Long?

Short Engagement (Less Than 1 Year) Pros: You don’t have tons of time to get stressed or second-guess your decisions.

You get another great piece of jewelry and, more importantly, a husband sooner!

Cons: The best of the best may be booked solid (especially in peak wedding season).

You don’t get to call your mate “fiance” very long. Guests may already have plans and will not be able to attend your big day.

Long Engagement (More Than 1 Year) Pros: Plenty of time to secure the perfect location, cake chef, dress, etc. You get to see how your fiance reacts to stressful situations such as planning a wedding, buying a house or moving in together, looking to the future, etc.

Cons: You can get sick of planning.

Decisions made early may seem stale by wedding day. The excitement wears off for your friends and family.

The Wedding Checklist

O

nce you’ve chosen the date, the following serves as a general guideline for 10 – 12 months from the date • Announce your engagement to your parents, family, and friends. Update your Facebook status to “Engaged.”

• Think about your overall theme – are you dreaming of a rustic, country-style wedding or a posh, sophisticated event? Do you dream of a traditional ceremony or are you looking for outside-the-box wedding ideas?

• Start working on your guest list.

• Pick the time of day / night for the wedding.

• Secure a church and / or reception venue.

• Choose your bridal party.

• Determine your wedding budget.

• Hire a wedding planner.

• Make a list of vendors (florists, caterers, musicians, etc.) and begin scheduling appointments.

2 – 3 months from the date • Discuss photography wants with the photographer.

• Discuss the menu with the caterer.

• Meet with your wedding officiate to discuss ceremony details.

• Write your vows, if you choose to write your own.

• Mail the wedding invitations.

• Apply for marriage license up to 60 days prior to the wedding date.

4 – 7 months from the date • Send ‘save the date’ notices to let guests know the date, time, and location of the wedding.

• Begin planning the rehearsal dinner.

• Schedule appointments for haircuts, color, wedding-day styling, manicures, pedicures, massages, and other beauty treatments.

• Register for gifts.

• Coordinate wedding transportation.

• Select and order attire for the groom and groomsmen.

• Purchase the wedding rings.

• Reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for out of town guests.

• Buy wedding-party gifts.

• Decide on and order wedding favors.

1 month from the date • Schedule a final gown fitting.

• Confirm that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have everything they need and are aware of the schedule of events.

• Confirm arrival and delivery times from all of your vendors.

• Have your wedding program printed.

• Create welcome bags for your out-of-town guests and have them delivered to the hotel.

8 – 10 months from the date • Write thank you notes as you receive gifts.

• Begin shopping for a wedding dress (be sure to budget for alterations and undergarments). • Confirm attendance of guests who have not RSVP’d.

• Shop and select bridesmaid dresses.

• Provide caterer with the final head count.

• Sign contracts and make initial deposits to reserve vendors for the big day.

• Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Something old symbolized the link to family and the past; something new, a transition from being single to being married. Something borrowed foretold that, by borrowing something from a happily married couple, good fortune would also be that of the newlyweds; and something blue harkened to a tradition in ancient Israel, in which blue was the border of the bride's dress to represent purity, constancy, and fidelity. The concept of the bride wearing something to fit each category originated in Europe to ward off evil spirits.

t would be difficult to find a bride who didn't know of certain traditions, but would she know how they got started? Many popular wedding ceremony and reception traditions are traced back to ancient Egyptian and European customs.

Popular acceptance has allowed many to continue.

Here are a few of the most common ones and their origins.

• Wedding ring. This dates back to early man tying plaited circlets around the bride's wrist and ankles to keep her spirit from running away. Since Roman times, the ring has been worn on the 3rd finger of the left hand believing that the vein from this finger runs directly to the heart. The circle represents everlasting love.

• Bouquet toss. In England, it was believed that a bride was lucky on her wedding day, and sometimes guests would tear at her dress for a souvenir piece of good luck. Tossing the bouquet was the bride offering a good luck souvenir so the guests wouldn't bother her dress.

Bridesmaid Duties

esides dressing up and hoping to catch the bouquet, there’s the serious matter of being a bridesmaid – your role leading up to the big moment. A few important tasks: • Host a bridal shower as a group and present the couple with a gift for their new home.

• Record who gave what at bridal showers while the bride enjoys gushing over the gifts.

• Give your opinion when asked, or just friendship when the bride needs that more than another idea.

• Offer to drop off swatches of ribbon or fabric to the florist or cake designer. Run errands or return calls when the bride is overwhelmed.

• Help address invitations and/or announcements if you’re blessed with beautiful penmanship.

• Be prompt for your own dress fittings.

• Take the bride out to lunch for a muchneeded break.

• Join the bride and groom in the receiving line if they ask.

• Be gracious, no matter what the situation. Mingle at the reception with guests from both families.

Amber Brennan and Ryan DeLeo

R

elaxed, laid-back, vintage and Southern are the words Amber (Brennan) DeLeo uses to describe her September 22, 2012, wedding. “With family in North Carolina, Philadelphia and Connecticut, we had several places we could get married, but we decided to show our northern guests all that NC has to offer,” said Amber.

Amber and Ryan gave their wedding several touches that were all their own. “We are beer enthusiasts so we featured beers from regions that were special to us at the reception and served foods that are our favorites. We also had five different flavors of wedding cake for dessert,” Amber commented.

But it was something else that the couple did that set their wedding apart.

“We made donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in honor of my mother who has MS, and the Bone Marrow Foundation in honor of Ryan’s friend. We gave bracelets to everyone that said ‘All you need is love.’

Honoring those in our lives was important to us,” stated Amber.

Along with great tunes from every genre and a photo booth, a good time was had by all, including the newlyweds.

“No matter how stressed I felt during the planning of the wedding, on the day, I put all of it behind me and let myself enjoy it completely. I wouldn’t change anything, except taking leftovers after the reception when we left. When the hotel’s fire alarm woke us up in the middle of the night, all of a sudden I was starving and had nothing to eat!”

The Top Five Regrets of Brides

o matter how long you have been planning your special day, there will inevitably be something about your wedding you wish you had done differently.

After you check off everything on your to-do list, you need to tackle what NOT to do. To help you get started, here are the top five biggest wedding day regrets: 5. Not creating a list of photos for the photographer to capture, or a list of songs for the DJ or band NOT to play.

One word: Macarena. Two words: Puppy Love.

4. Letting friends/loved ones tackle big responsibilities like videography or cake baking to save money. There are many budget-friendly, professional options.

3. Allowing others to pressure you into things you don’t want, or talk you out of your selections.

Behind the Scenes: Cakes!

ur cover-bride, Brooke Eagle, had a very specific vision for her wedding cake. We talked to her cake designer, Christina Johnson of Creative Cake Designs, to learn more about the process of designing and building a wedding cake.

Where should she look for inspiration?

Her wedding dress, invitations, and color swatches are just a few starting points.

Wedding consultations go much smoother when the bride comes prepared.

When a bride has too many ideas, how can she refocus?

When we find a bride with too many ideas, we try to help narrow them down by learning about the theme of the wedding.

Is it fun and funky or classy and elegant?

What is her overall vision for the day?

A baker can help put into perspective what might make the most sense for her wedding.

What should a bride bring with her to help you interpret her vision?

We highly recommend that a bride browse the internet and magazines to find what she likes and doesn’t like in wedding cakes. Build a Pinterest board of cakes you like and send the link to your bakery.

How much notice should a bride give a bakery?

It honestly depends on the weekend.

Some weekends are booked almost a year in advance while others are wide-open until a week before. Traditionally, the three-day weekends book up the fastest.

How much should a bride budget for her wedding cake?

The more elaborate, the higher the rate will be. It will depend on the bakery and the amount of labor that goes in the design.

Tell us about delivery… what happens the day of?

Depending on the cake design, most of our wedding cakes are in the cooler until right before delivery. For taller designs, the last tier or two may be assembled onsite.

Behind the Scenes: Wedding Planners

No matter how many family members or close friends offer to help, you have to choose the people who share your vision for the big day. For many couples, this begins with the perfect wedding planner.

“Partnering with a wedding planner could be one of the best decisions you make…aside from choosing your groom/bride, of course!” said Kristin Johnson of The Perfect Pair. “A planner will listen intently to the vision for your day and then carefully help you select your wedding team, based on experience.

Think of it as listening to a really great song; everything is coordinated, the instruments work well together and everything flows.”

The right wedding planner can anticipate your every move, and will always be one step ahead of your concerns. “As life goes, your wedding day will most likely

present opportunities for last minute changes and possibly a mishap or two,” said Johnson. “We love a good challenge and find opportunity in fluctuating circumstances. A planner worth her weight in gold is always prepared with alternate plans and is ready to execute them flawlessly if and when necessary. Planners protect the couple, the families, the wedding party and guests from unnecessary stress.

And as always, make sure you are happy before you sign anything! “Before you sign a contract with a planner, make sure you both share the same dream for your wedding day,” said Johnson. “Brides, you should feel comfortable to have open and honest communication with your planner, from style preferences to family dynamics and budget. If the communication and expectations of each party are realistic, there should not be disagreements in decisions made. It’s your day to shine! It’s the planners’ day to make sure you shine!”

f you’re a Pinterest fan, there’s no need to tell you there are tons of ideas available at this site. For wedding planning, this is a fantastic place to start envisioning your wedding before meeting with bakers, dressmakers and coordinators. You can prepare a storyboard of your vision to share with your vendors. The adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is definitely true. Showing your florist, baker, etc. what you have in mind, as opposed to simply describing it, is much more likely to result in what you intended. Below are some tips to help you get started and plan your special day.

• Give yourself a timeframe to build your boards, with enough time at the end for implementation. In other words, the sooner the better.

• Pick your top three to five favorites. Go to their home sites and capture the details (availability, price, delivery time, etc.). nce in a while an online dating site produces a couple meant for each other…such was the case for Erica Nail and Luke McMahon. “We met online through ChristianMingle.com in the fall of 2009 and had a long distance relationship between Raleigh and Winston-Salem. After Luke’s proposal in July 2011, we decided on a wedding date of May 18, 2012,” recalled Erica.

With a dream of going to Italy, Erica and Luke decided to give their wedding an Italian vineyard feel by getting married at Raffaldini Vineyard in Ronda, NC, which turned out to be a dream location. “Before we were engaged, Luke and I visited Raffaldini, and upon overlooking the vineyard from the balcony, we knew this was the perfect location for our wedding. With a color scheme of Sangria and Champagne, we added special touches, including an antique arbor that we refinished ourselves, personalizing it with our names and wedding date, making the ceremony even more intimate,” Erica stated.

For Erica and Luke, their wedding day was about being able to spend time with their family and friends – not getting caught up in the whirlwind of a busy day, but in making special moments to remember. “We chose to keep things informal with dancing and a fun photo booth at the reception. Instead of the traditional guest book, we chose to have our guests pick one photo from the ones taken in the photo booth and place in a book with their personal message to us. We also gave our guests frames for their copy of the photo to remember our special day,” commented Erica.

ecause it’s easy to become overwhelmed at a bridal show, going in prepared is always your best strategy. You’ll take in a lot of information at the show, take home a bunch of marketing materials, and later, you’ll try to remember all the great ideas you saw at the show! To make the most of a bridal show, consider the following:

• Make a list of your top three weddingday priorities (i.e., photography, openbar, live band, flowers, cake, etc.).

• Bring a notebook or use an app on your smartphone to record notes of vendors you want to follow up with later.

• Make a list of all the types of vendors you’ll need for your big day.

• Try to find out if price packages are available a la carte or if they are allinclusive.

• Bring your fiancé or a friend to help you stay focused.

• Be sure to talk to a planner while you’re at the show!

• Look for vendors who listen to your vision and your needs. Do you feel that their personality will be one you can work with easily?

• Schedule appointments to follow up with vendors away from the chaos of the show.

ou have a beautiful wedding gown, but don’t forget those critical foundation garments that help keep it – and you – looking perfect throughout your big day.

This is one purchase that you will need to wait to make until you’ve selected your wedding dress. The style and cut of the dress will be important in selecting the appropriate bra to ensure a good fit and keep you comfortable.

• Once you’re chosen the perfect gown, ask what type of bra would be best. You may need a strapless, deepcut, push-up, or bustier style bra. Or, your dress may already have a bra built into the design.

• It’s a good idea to have a picture of your dress as reference (front, back and side views) for the fitter to help you select the correct style. Comfort is also important. You don’t want to be tugging at your dress or feel like you’re being poked. A well-fitted garment will take care of that.

f you are the mother of the bride, you will have plenty of things to think about on the big day – don’t make your dress be one of them!

• Start looking for your outfit as soon as possible. It may take longer than you expect to find what you envision yourself wearing. Do not limit yourself by a preconceived notion of a particular style or the stores you usually visit.

• Remember that pictures last a lifetime. That trendy dress might look good today, but will you be happy looking at it in pictures years later?

• Make sure the dress fits with the season, location, and overall feel or theme of the wedding.

• Think about colors.

ain and threatening skies could not dampen the wedding of Brooke (Johnson) and Chris Eagle, Jr. After all, many say that rain on a wedding day is good luck!

Quickly moving an outdoor ceremony inside, as raindrops start to fall and umbrellas begin to open, could make many brides upset. But neither Brooke, nor her groom-to-be Chris, were distracted from the importance of sharing their special night with family and friends, and making the evening their own. “We had a large wedding party, including 11 bridesmaids, 10 groomsmen, 2 flower girls and one golden retriever. Our dog, Gizmo, was there for the proposal, so he was our ring bearer at the wedding,” Brooke said.

A golden retriever was not the only unique and personal touch of the Eagles’ wedding. “Chris and I had our ‘first look,’ meaning we had a moment with just us

and the photographer right before the ceremony. This may have been my favorite part of the wedding. We also wrote our own vows, hearing them for the first time during the ceremony,” commented Brooke.

Even with the change in plans due to the rain, Brooke and Chris wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding. “Our setting of WinMockwas beautiful, with attention to our theme of ‘rustic elegance’ in every detail. Everything was perfect, primarily due to the wedding coordinators, The Perfect Pair. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them,” Brooke stated.

At the end of the night, guests left with great memories and a ‘doggy bag.’

“We gave out doggy bags that contained two bone shaped cookies, in honor of Gizmo – one for the owner and one for the dog. We also made a donation to the Forsyth Humane Society,” said Brooke.

Meeting with photographers in person at a bridal show can serve as an informal "pre-interview" before you decide if you want to have a more in-depth discussion with them.

What kind of questions should the bride be prepared to ask? Pricing (including deposits and payment terms), number of hours included, different package choices, and what is/is not included in each package are all important questions to ask. Additionally, ask to see a portfolio of their work.

Are Engagement Shoots and Bridal Portraits really necessary? Yes! The engagement shoot is PERFECT for the bride and groom to get to know the photographer and his/her style. The same goes for bridal portraits... it is a great opportunity for the bride to get to know the photographer as well as have a photo shoot be 'all about her!'

How much should a bride budget for her wedding photography? Remember, besides your wedding rings, your photography is the most important tangible reminder of your wedding day, so don’t forget to budget at least 12% of your total wedding budget to cover photography. orget the traditional wrist corsage and single blossom boutonniere. Using your imagination and wedding theme, you can design some fabulous corsages and boutonnieres.

In Honor Of: Include something special in a corsage or bout as an in-memory-of or in-honor-of token (perhaps a small item of jewelry or a charm reminder).

Non-Traditional Floral: Try wild flowers, succulents, herbs, baby’s breath or ferns (Pinterest is a great source for ideas).

Wedding Token: Include a special charm for each wedding attendant suitable for key chains or necklaces and personalize as a wedding memory. Give braceletinspired corsages (sterling or beaded).

or Candice Slate and Christian Covington, the charm and history of Old Salem was the perfect setting for their dream wedding on June 30, 2012. “Chris’ family is Moravian and it was important to us as a couple to honor that by having the ceremony at Gray Auditorium at the Old Salem Visitor Center,” said Candice. Family was a central theme throughout this couple’s wedding.

“Chris’ father designed our beautiful wedding logo, which we featured on many decorations throughout the event. My mother-in-law and brother-in-law, Annette and Matthew Covington, played a special music selection as a prelude to the ceremony, in addition to arranging the pieces played throughout the evening by the string quartet, Elegant Ensembles. My mother made sure every detail was perfect and hospitable to our guests, from special hand towels and mints in the restrooms, to welcome bags packed with local treats for the out-of-town guests. Our day was made extra special because of everything that our family and friends contributed,” Candice commented.

here are many ways to give your wedding that personal touch while saving money at the same time!

use apples with a slight slit to put a card with your guests' name and table number; for spring, make streamers using ribbons and flowers to add a soft and whimsical touch. Using branches, create a tree and have guests write a message they can tie onto it for the couple.

• Save-the-Date announcements are very popular. Use your theme, colors, or pictures to make your own. Great ideas can be found online. If you order them, you can save money by assembling them yourself (if needed).

• Donate money to a favorite cause and then make your own wedding favors to highlight it. For example, make a donation to a pet organization, and have dog or cat shaped cookies as the favor.

• Design and print your own wedding programs. For a summer outdoor wedding, consider making the program a fan.

Look on-line for a multitude of ideas, use your imagination, and be creative.

Pomegranate Champagne Punch 1 ½ cups pomegranate juice 1 cup pear nectar ¼ cup Grand Marnier 1 bottle (750 ml) champagne Mix all ingredients in a large pitcher then slowly add champagne.

Decadent Chocolate Martini 6 parts vodka 1 part chocolate liqueur Chocolate curls for garnish Mix and enjoy!

The Candy Cane Cocktail 1 candy cane, crushed 2 oz. strawberry vodka Dash of crème de menthe 2 ½ oz. cranberry juice Ice cubes Wet the outside rim of a chilled martini glass and rotate in the crushed candy cane to create the perfect garnish.

In Our Own Words…

M

y engagement period was not always the happiest time of my life. While I was thrilled to be marrying the love of my life, I often felt overwhelmed and quickly learned that compromise was a huge part of the planning.

The best advice I received was, “Decide what is most important to you, and don’t compromise this.” Early on, my husband Brad and I decided that we wanted our vows to be special, but choosing vows can be a big stressor.

Deciding on the right words and creating our vows caused anxiety for both of us, which we did not need at the time.

So…we did the next best thing: we stole them. Well, not exactly. I found a couple of wedding websites that listed vows people had used. I copied some of the phrases, edited them, and added some new words. Ultimately, we made the vows 58

our own with the inspiration from a variety of wedding vows from many couples.

Once the big day came, everything fell into place, and I felt lifted up on love.

When it came time to say our vows, I felt like Brad and I were in a bubble, just the two of us, looking into each other’s eyes, smiling and meaning each word. It was as if it was just us and God in that beautiful arboretum. Halfway into our vows, the pastor choked up as she attempted to read the words that we were to repeat. I saw family members wiping their eyes, and I could hear my bridesmaids sniffling behind me.

Looking back, I feel so pleased that we preserved such an important part of our wedding, the vows, for ourselves. We made the vows our own, they sang true to who we were, and they moved people to tears in their authenticity and profound meaning.

Megan Southern and Joshua Helmly

n August 2, 2012, Megan Southern and Joshua Helmly not only shed tears of joy over winning an all-expensespaid wedding, but also for the ‘one in a million’ path they have travelled, hand in hand, since the birth of their son.

Having been together for five years, Megan and Joshua welcomed their son Jackson into the world on February 22, 2012. Following several medical crises, Jackson was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer, affecting ‘one in a million’ children. Because of Jackson’s condition, much of his life has been spent in and out of the hospital and in need of constant care. “Jackson needs a kidney transplant, but has to be cancer free until May 2013 to have the surgery. Our lives are all about Jackson, so planning our wedding wasn’t a priority or possible, until we entered a contest sponsored by ‘We Thee Wed,’ a 60

non-profit group which organizes wedding professionals to give away a free wedding – and we won!” said Megan.

The couple, surrounded by family and friends and with little Jackson in tow, said ‘I do’ in Kernersville, NC, at the Harmon House. “Our wedding was a wonderful time of celebration and a look into the future that Joshua and I always knew we would have together, with Jackson happy and healthy. We are so very blessed to have had this opportunity to share our story and our lives with such generous people,” Megan commented.

• Don’t fear the bridal registry.

Today’s wish-lists extend beyond the dining room table. Think garden gadgets and bar accessories.

• Choose your groomsmen wisely (i.e., responsible, friendly, with manners in tow).

• Run interference between your families, if needed. If not, be thankful you don’t have to.

• Give your busy bride-to-be some time off. Whisk her away to the beach or mountains for a couple of days with no wedding talk allowed.

• Treat yourself to some relaxing male bonding – golf, camping or just an afternoon on the lake with the guys.

• Be prepared: rehearse your toast to the bride, organize travel documents, deliver the rings to the best man in advance.

• Be early on the big day. Period.

The Unity Ceremony: A Honored Tradition

T

he lighting of the unity candle, symbolizing two people becoming one, is a time honored tradition, but today’s brides are finding new twists on this tradition to make it unique.

Sand Ceremony With the sand ceremony, two small containers of different colored sand are poured together by the bride and groom into a larger vessel, symbolizing unity.

Many brides like the sand ceremony because they can choose sand to match their wedding colors.

Wine Ceremony Similar to the sand ceremony, the wine ceremony consists of the bride and groom each having a glass of wine, pouring a portion of the contents of each glass into one glass, and then taking a sip.

Tree Ceremony This ceremony involves a tree in a medium pot, into which the parents of the bride and groom place soil from where the couple grew up. Then, the couple takes soil from where they will be living after the wedding and add it to the pot. Eventually the tree will be planted in the couple’s yard.

o matter how long the engagement, your wedding planning has undoubtedly been going on for years. As soon as you met the love of your life, decisions about your big day were being made whether you were aware of them or not. You want your guests to enjoy your wedding and remember it for years to come, but the decisions you make reflect your taste and personality, so no one should enjoy this day more than you and your new spouse! Here are some tips to help you throughout the reception: • Designate bridesmaids to “relieve” you from lengthy conversations to move around the room, take restroom breaks, eat and drink water.

• Use your wedding planner/ photographer to your advantage. Ask them to set aside a space away from the reception where you and your new husband or wife can sit down, grab a bite to eat or simply be alone for a few minutes during the reception. Your photographer can steal you away by simply saying, “You are needed for photos.”

• Do not be afraid to excuse yourself if there is something you need/want to do such as greet close friends, freshen up, take a breather or check on an element of the reception.

Your First Dance

or the bride and groom, the first few hours after the wedding are full of firsts. The first kiss… The first bite of shared cake… And the first dance. The first dance was traditionally a waltz, but couples today choose from a variety of dances, including choreographed and elaborate dances, designed to entertain their audience.

Some tips to make your first dance special and memorable: 1. Plan. If you and/or your groom have two left feet, plan ahead by scheduling dance classes at a nearby dance studio.

You’ll feel much less pressure after a few classes.

2. Practice. Even if you don’t visit a professional dance studio, regular practice to your planned first dance song will help!

3. Dress the part. Brides, wear your wedding shoes and a long skirt while you practice. Grooms, wear a suit jacket and your dress shoes as well. Not only will this help you break in the wedding shoes, but it will give you a feel for your posture and for navigating a long skirt or train.

4. Prepare. The band or DJ that is…

Make sure the band has a copy of your song, so they can familiarize themselves with the tempo at which you expect the song to be played. Alternatively, if you want to get on and off the dance floor quickly, talk to your DJ about shortening the song, or providing an invitation for your guests to join you at a certain point in the song.

5. Have fun. Be prepared to laugh.

It’s not about perfect footwork, but about being in the arms of the one you perfectly love!

Relationship With Your New In-Laws

aving a healthy relationship with your in-laws is extremely important. Not only will it make married life happier and less stressful around the holidays, it will be a necessity once you have children who will want, and need, to spend quality time with their grandparents.

One of the biggest mistakes most of us make is trying to be what we think our future in-laws want us to be. Your fiancé fell in love with you for a reason, and

hopefully, it was because you were yourself and not some creepy imposter.

If you have fun, loving in-laws, thank your lucky stars and breathe a sigh of relief! If you are unlucky enough to get unreasonable, overbearing in-laws, pick your battles and realize that your spouse chose you and was stuck with them!

No matter what category you fit into, your family has just doubled in size, and either way you slice it, that is a blessing!

hen all the wedding chaos is over and you and your spouse begin your new lives together, it can be really exciting (and also stressful) to learn about all the new traditions you will adopt.

Where will you watch fireworks on the Fourth? Which week is set aside for the annual beach trip? When is Christmas dinner, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? Instead of forcing each other into old traditions, why not start some of your own together?

Once you have a family of your own, it will really help to have yearly traditions already set.

• If you spend every Easter at a specific church service followed by a big lunch and Easter egg hunt, you won’t have to feel bad when you turn down offers to go elsewhere and choose between your family and your spouse’s.

• If you plan an annual trip during Labor Day weekend, you can ask others to join you instead of traveling from one place to another every holiday to see as many people as possible.

But before you trash every tradition you grew up with, find common ground among your traditions and keep them strong. Your families will really appreciate seeing their traditions carried on, and your children will get the same joy out of them as you did growing up!
