Do you ever run across things that you’ve written in the past and cringe at how it reads?
Maybe it’s a journal entry or a diary. Maybe it’s a Facebook post memory. have had this happen to me many times. Thank goodness our online magazine archives don’t go back 17 years – I’d be mortified if the public could easily access articles I wrote back in high school and college.
I’ve heard authors say this many times. The first book they wrote? They can’t stand to read it. Why does this happen? Because, as authors, they grow tremendously with each published book. I’d bet most authors would agree that their 5th book is way better than the first. This applies to so many other things in life. A professional baseball player likely didn’t have the game of his life during high school. A photographer doesn’t take the best photo of his or her career with the first camera ever purchased. You get better at things the more you do them!
Contrary to popular belief (and the highlight reel that we call “social media”), no one starts right out of the gate doing something perfectly. I have this topic on my mind because often I’ll get frustrated with myself when I can’t do things perfectly the first time. We must remind ourselves that practice makes progress with just about everything in life.
What’s something you are aiming to improve? Maybe it’s a sport or hobby. Maybe it’s something specific to your career. This is your public service announcement that YOU GOT THIS! Whatever it may be…I believe in you.
Our team is so proud to bring you our November issue! Our mission continues – to be a positively inspired, communityfocused magazine. We love keeping our community connected! One of my favorite things to hear is when readers tell us they “always see someone they know” in every issue of Forsyth Woman. Whether it’s a business owner they know, a writer or a friend pictured at one of our events, we love to hear it!
A few special highlights in this issue:
• Our holiday gift guide! Chock full of local, awesome gift ideas for the holiday season. Head to page 98.
• Small Business Saturday at Accent Prone! Make sure to visit ALL of your favorite local shops on Small Business Saturday on November 26th! More details on page 32.
• This month, we’ve featured MidTown Cafe and Dessertery on the cover! If you haven’t been lately, they’ve done a fabulous renovation! Go check out the delicious looking photos on page 68 and if you need a dessert for the holidays, they are already taking preorders!
• I’m so proud to announce that my brother has officially started a column! While neither of my parents are too big on cooking, somehow they have a son who is a beyond amazing chef. Check out the 919 Backyard BBQ column on page 50.
• One more brand-new column in this issue! Clean Living with Coach Jane. She kicked things off with a topic I absolutely love –the health benefits of gratitude! Check it out on page 56.
I’d like to close with a huge “thank you” to our graphic designer, Aron Daniels. This issue marks his last with us after many years. While we’re so happy for him and where he’s headed, we are certainly going to miss him. Aron, THANK YOU for sharing our passion and playing such an important role on our team. We’re excited to welcome a new designer to our team, Stefanie!
Wishing you a November filled with gratitude,

Keeping It Real
WHEN ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE
BY DR. DEBBIE LANIER
When all hell breaks loose in your life, what is your initial reaction? I'm not asking what you want it to be. Truly, what is your "go to" reaction?
Do you ever pray because you know you’re supposed to, but you don’t actually expect God to answer? (I’ve done that!)
This thinking causes us to pray puny prayers, quick prayers, routine prayers that never stretch us and never change the situation.
When the Early Church got news that Peter (one of their generals) had been thrown into prison for his faith and faced execution at daylight, they gathered to pray.
They didn’t look for God in a crisis moment. In fact, they didn’t have to look FOR God at all; they had already been looking TO Him. They simply doubled down in their HABIT of prayer. (By the way, your habits direct your days and determine your destiny!)
The Passion Bible notes that the believers gathered and “went into a season of intense intercession.” (Acts 12:5 tPt) The Greek translation for “intense intercession” means “to stretch tightly in prayer.”
If we truly want to see God move in our situations, we can’t merely offer up to Him panicked prayers in our distress. It requires a stretching beyond familiarity. It necessitates exertion that thrusts us right out of our worn-out, practiced prayers.
Intercession that brings real change propels us into personal, uncharted waters. We determine to extend and expand ourselves beyond our usual capacity.
Nothing about “intense intercession” is casual or ordinary. We’re not begging God to change His posture; the stretching is actually changing ours! It’s changing us!
THIS is the kind of passionate prayer that broke through this impossibility the Early Church faced. Because of this intense intercession, Peter miraculously walked from that prison cell in a completely unexplainable way. (You have to read it! It’s in Acts 12, and it’s SO good! SO GOOD!)
This real story about real people trusting the only REAL GOD proves ALL OVER AGAIN that the Lord bends down low to listen to our prayers. It reminds us that He delights in stretching us to become more like the people He created us to be.
Together let us “stretch tightly in prayer.” Let us choose to extend ourselves beyond our familiar, routine words that come out of our mouths on autopilot.
Let us lay our heart out before God and know that He cares about every detail. As we offer ourselves completely to Him, He offers Himself completely to us! It’s a beautiful thing! It’s a powerful thing! It breaks the chains and causes captives to walk free! Just ask Peter!
For comments or prayer, contact Dr. Lanier at PastorDebbie@HopeCommunityChurch.tv.
Manners They Never Go Out of Style
BY MEGAN TAYLOR
With each passing day and year, the world keeps changing. Our values and beliefs as a society fluctuate over time. Something that is important one decade may not be as important the next. Also, ideas, concepts, and traditions vary from generation to generation. Yet, there are common threads that still connect people within our communities. These threads are the spoken and unspoken rules of society that, no matter your age, you follow. One of these threads is manners.
Manners can be defined as “a person’s outward behavior towards others.” They are etiquette rules that show polite and respectful behavior. Manners are dictated by acceptable social norms. Like other values and beliefs, they can, and do, alternate based on cultures, social groups, and expectations.
Within our society, there are certain manners that people still find respectable to show and teach the younger generations to abide by, as well.
At the root of having manners is a general care and consideration for others. You are thinking outside of yourself for a moment and adding that “personal touch” to different aspects of life. With manners, you build empathy and relationships with others. They are social skills. For example,
saying “please and thank you” shows regard for others with appreciation and gratitude. Apologizing is an example of taking responsibility for your actions. Asking questions about others indicates your interest in other people’s lives. These manners are mainly spoken ones that we learn growing up, but there are also unspoken ones that are implied throughout society.
These unspoken manners may seem “oldfashioned” to some, but they are the etiquette norms that never go out of style. Again, they all relate back to having that general care and consideration for others. Some of these manners include not doing loud yard work in the early morning hours during the weekend, taking the time to send handwritten thank-you cards, putting away the electronics at dinner, and reaching out to those in need.
To help complete this list of spoken and unspoken manners, I gathered some feedback from our writers. Here’s what they think are the manners that should never go out of style:
• “Bringing a small hostess gift when invited to a party, holiday event, etc. Also, RSVPing. I think it’s common courtesy to let someone know if you
will or will not be attending. If they were kind enough to extend an invitation, take the time to acknowledge the invite and help them get a proper headcount.” - Taryn Jerez
• “Returning things you borrowed in a timely manner.” - Martie Emory
• “Holding the door open for people.” - Megan Black
• “Not overstaying my welcome as a party guest or house guest. Also, helping my host with chores or whatever I can. Lastly, saying ‘yes and no, ma’am’ and ‘yes and no, sir’ to my elders.”
- Karen Cooper
• “Being on time. If you are late, it sends a vibe that your time is more valuable than the person you are meeting.” - Keela Johnson
• “Two spaces after a period to help with reading.” Throwback to typing class!” - Melanie Lamm
Sometimes it can be hard to remember your manners, especially when life gets tough. But they can take you far in life. What manners do you think should never go out of style?

This month’s featured artist, Beth Glover, pursues unspoken and unseen glimpses of truth, beauty and strength through her abstract expressionist work. Whether on paper and canvas or transformed into fabric and decor items, Beth uses rich colors, organic textures and layers with natural shapes and an overall energy in gesture and momentum.
Beth Glover | Artist and Surface Designer
How would you describe your work?
Most of my original artwork would fall under abstract expressionism with some landscape and floral pieces leaning more into an impressionistic approach. I often use watercolor and mixed media – acrylics, ink, chalk, oil pastels – and like to explore using media in untraditional ways. My artwork and surface design work often include rich texture, movement (sometimes energetic but often peaceful) as well as colorful and organic shapes.
What influences your art most?
My artwork and creativity is most influenced by my faith and personal relationship with God and Jesus, and flows from an intuitive place. often start creating with just a feeling or a color in mind and allow my art to take shape from there. I often don’t know what the final product will be, but I love that feeling.
How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?
There was a time that calling myself “an artist” was a conscious effort. Now, feel confident stating the fact that I’m an artist. It’s not because have an art degree (I don’t) but I have fully embraced my identity, my creativity and pursued it diligently (and not without difficulty) over the last five years. My artwork holds more meaning and weight for me, too, now that I recognize myself as a lifelong artist.
You teach both private classes and academic classes as an art teacher, what do you enjoy most about teaching?
I’ve always been passionate about creativity and connecting with other people. I believe every human is creative and has the capacity to make art, and that beauty helps us to learn deeper truths from God. I started teaching as a volunteer for Arts for Life NC, a non-profit that serves children’s hospitals in North Carolina and it’s brought me so many opportunities since then. I’ve been able to teach children as young as 5, Alzheimer and dementia patients, all different experience levels of adults, host virtual lessons during the pandemic…Teaching allows me to empower others to discover their creative capacity. love encouraging and helping others to unlock their unknown creative potential or just helping them reimagine who they thought they were. I’m less concerned with perfect technique, and much more concerned with their belief in themselves as creators and encouraging them to explore and practice from that place of belief.
How do you carve out time to be creative?
When creating art became a business for me, found the business side of everything took much more time and energy than the creative and fun part. Sometimes set a small goal for myself, such as “Paint for 15 minutes” every morning - no matter what you paint - just paint. Recently, I decided to take a class in a medium I know nothing about! I took a handbuilding ceramics class and I fell in love with it! I had never done any 3D artwork or sculpture before, and it really brought me so much joy and enabled me to access my creativity in an entirely new and playful way.
What are you working on right now that excites you?
I am prepping for the upcoming Ardmore Artwalk on Saturday, November 5th (11:00am to 4:30pm!) love doing local shows like this because I get to connect with people about art. Since taking my ceramics class, I am really excited to offer different ceramic handbuilt ornaments this year as well as my signature gold leaf ornaments, which I shared last year!
What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?
I would encourage my fellow artists to take time and be patient as you figure out what makes your art unique. You have to make a lot of bad art so you can find the good art! Keep something of your artmaking for yourself and don’t monetize everything, because it does change if you look at all your creative work as a commodity.
If you are interested in learning more about Beth Glover or where to find her local work or upcoming classes you can follow her on Instagram @bethglover.art, head to her website bethgloverart. com or take part in the November 5th Ardmore Artwalk. Beth and her work will be located at 2368 Elizabeth Avenue for the Ardmore Art walk

Why Small Towns Matter (so much)
BY RENEE SKUDRA
For the past several years when I feel a need for a geographical (and spiritual) reprieve, I get into the trusty 2002 Toyota and head for Kernersville, my family’s personal oasis. take the long way from Greensboro, heading down W. Market Street, and enjoy passing the airport with all its impressive planes, going under an old bridge and by two roundabouts, stopping momentarily in Colfax to give the Bichon Frise a chance for a leisurely stroll. With not much of a specific plan in mind, we engage in what an Italian friend calls “dolce far niente”- the sweetness of doing nothing. Moments later we have entered Kernersville and, passing Whit’s Frozen Custard, say out loud “See you in a couple of hours,” savoring the thought of a chocolate treat later .
Approaching Kernersville, we pass by a very old brick building with a gathering of vintage automobiles in the lot. We stop to take a photo, inspecting a green weather-beaten, but still regal, vehicle and feel as if we are frozen in a 1940s moment of time and a history no longer much in our grasp. From there we take a short walk in the Paul Ciener Botanic Gardens and check out some unusual blooms; we find a quince plant growing, something we have never seen or heard a word about. It is much like finding a quiet little treasure when doing so was the last thing on your mind. The garden is a bastion of peace and I say a little prayer thanking God for His omniscience and even the smallest beauties which are here on all of nature’s grounds.
On this particular Saturday, focused on finding the unexpected, which Kernersville always delivers, we come upon a Vintage Thrift Faire on the grounds of Kerner’s Folly. Even though the heat is blazing, I find what I always do in this lovely city: its denizens are so polite and eager to chat. I recall a quote from Jorie McDonald in the May issue of Southern Living– “There are three things Southerners take very seriously: fried food, college football, and good manners.”
When we drop by Musten & Crutchfield to pick up some locally produced items, the owner comes up to me and starts talking. He personifies the habits of the heart and small town hospitality that is apparent everywhere.
Still looking for the unexpected, while walking downtown, we happen upon the earliest known building in Kernersville –the Spears House at 307 S. Main Street. Its architectural loveliness stops us in our tracks and we take a photo of my son in his well-worn, beloved University of California, Berkeley t-shirt, holding his dog. A Kernersville friend has told us not to miss the iconic 1925 Pinnix Drugstore Colonial Revival building, erected on a lot previously owned by the Sapp family who had a dry goods store there. The style and plain brick veneering and its large show windows hearken back to a former history when the building was also home to the telephone company and the town’s post office. Although the drug store closed in 1986 it still contributes mightily to the historic district’s feel of days-gone-by.
Bent on exploring the city more, we stop at the library, disembark and suddenly see a beautiful spotted fawn on the lawn adjoining the building. A passerby remarks to me that Kernersville has many deer, and bears as well. Suddenly I am gratefully in the thick of conversation. I remember a remark by the writer Sylvia Plath who said, “I love people. Everybody. love them, think, as a stamp collector loves his collection. Every story, every incident, every bit of conversation is raw material for me.” As we are speaking, am taking mental notes to include his reflections in an upcoming piece. A second later my son who has gone ahead with his Bichon Frise, yells out “Mom, there’s a little lake here!” Again, the unexpected has occurred and we move close in, better to observe the Canada geese and their rambunctious goslings.
After a stop at Whit’s for dessert on the ride back to Greensboro, I think about a Southern neighbor’s words about being “worn slap out.” I now know that the expression means “super exhausted” and it ably describes our own now-weary state. A day spent in reach of a grueling sun has made us hot but put in high relief the sparkling beauty of Kernersville and the gentility of its citizenry. Homeowners spend a significant amount of time and money inside their homes to ensure there is a desired ambiance and proper task lighting, but thoughtful consideration for exterior illumination is equally important.
Professionally designed and installed architectural and landscape lighting is an artform that becomes an asset to any upscale home and will increase its value far beyond the cost of installation. When considering the ever-increasing daily stress and the hassle, expense and uncertainty of vacation travel, it begins to make perfect sense that more people are choosing to invest in their homes and spend their recreational time in their own backyards. Whether considering adding landscaping features, hardscaping, gardens, pathways, decks, arbors, cabanas, or pools, lighting these spaces is an integral part of creating a resort-like experience for entertaining.
Whatever the reason may be for adding outdoor lighting, more sophisticated homeowners are using the services of professional outdoor lighting specialists to enrich their outdoor spaces and to make them more usable, more enjoyable, and more beautiful as evening falls.
Castlelights, the Triad’s premiere, awardwinning architectural and landscape lighting company has been designing, installing, and servicing low voltage landscape lighting systems for over 20 years. They have extensive experience and expertise to know what works well, stands the test of time, and looks great. There are many options available to homeowners, but Castlelights has earned an exemplary reputation and is well respected in the industry because of the exceptionally high quality of work and products (manufactured in the USA) that are as durable as they are attractive.
Tim Burge, owner of Castlelights, and his associates are hands-on and treat each project as though it was their own property. “It’s personal,” says Tim. Castlelights will always stand behind their work.
7 REASONS TO CONSIDER AN OUTDOOR LIGHTING SYSTEM
• Aesthetic Appeal – exterior lighting creates ambiance and adds a touch of elegance to your home and property
• Safety – highlighting steps, walkways and revealing potential trip hazards will help you and your guests safely navigate your property after dark.
• Home Security – illuminating dark areas of your property will deter a potential intruder, home invasion attempts and/or negate other malicious activity that could be conducted unnoticed under the cover of darkness.
• Accent – outdoor lighting becomes an integral part of the landscape plan and emphasizes favorite architectural and landscape features.
• Visibility – provides lighting to an area that is typically dark and uninviting.
• Functionality – purposeful and decorative lighting makes it possible for you and your guests to further enjoy outdoor interests such as cooking, dining, and other recreational activities later into the evening.
• Increase Property Value – Studies show that professional outdoor lighting can add up to 20% of the perceived value of a home. Further studies indicate that 50% of potential homebuyers claim that outdoor lighting is an important feature to consider when buying a home.
Granted, there are many homes in the area with exterior illumination, but hundreds of satisfied customers agree that homes with the Castlelights touch stand out above the rest. Whether it is a brand new project or an older system in need of a makeover, Tim guarantees, “Castlelights will showcase key focal areas, tie everything together and put a bow on it!” The difference lies in the strategic placement of soft lighting around the home and landscape features by carefully crafting every aspect of the project. Outdoor lighting designs by Castlelights have a luxurious feel and exhibit an artistic flare that accentuates details that likely go unnoticed during the day but come to life at night. The result is always as beautiful as it is functional!
The unwavering commitment to excellence, high-quality standards, stellar service, and remarkable products are complemented by Tim’s creativity, passion, and enthusiasm to guarantee that every outdoor space looks amazing. Tim shares that he sometimes drives around town looking at lighting systems with the same sense of wonder others experience when looking at brilliant holiday light displays. It is not uncommon for him to hop out of his vehicle to replace a burnedout bulb or tweak a lighting fixture to ensure the visual impact of a Castlelights system is optimized.
Whether the desired exterior lighting system installation is primarily functional or destined to become an inviting atmosphere with incredible ambiance, Castlelights will help determine the best system for the homeowner’s needs and preferences.
Beautiful outdoor lighting creations begin with Castlelights. Look no further than Castlelights for “Outdoor lighting for YOUR Castle.” The lighting experts service Winston Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and surrounding areas. They also service most other areas in North Carolina and select areas in Virginia and South Carolina. Call them today at (336) 5054913 to see what they can do for you.

On the Road Again: Mexico New
BY AMY HILL
While it might be surprising to some, New Mexico is packed with noteworthy nature and history, making it difficult to narrow its highlights down to just a seven-day itinerary. Here’s how to spend a week in New Mexico, also referred to as the “Land of Enchantment.”
Day 1: Arrive in Santa Fe
To see the most out of New Mexico, suggest flying into Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) and arranging a one-way rental car for a departure out of Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), a clever play on words given New Mexico’s desert climate. Santa Fe is an art-enthusiast’s best friend, as downtown Santa Fe is home to numerous art galleries, as well as art festivals. There is also no shortage of top-of-the-line authentic Mexican food in the downtown area, which is where you’re likely to get the best feel for the city’s culture.
Day 2: Bandelier National Monument
Around 46 miles west of Santa Fe is Bandelier National Monument in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Bandelier National Monument preserves the homes and settlements of the Ancestral Puebloans, with humans believed to have settled in the area 10,000 years ago. Visitors can view ancestral pueblo homes and petroglyphs, along with choosing between a plethora of long and short trails to hike. Many trails include ladder climbs that add an exhilarating challenge for families. It is ideal to visit Bandelier in the spring or fall, when New Mexico temperatures are not as extreme.
Day 3: Drive to Ruidoso
Wake up early and drive three hours south to the village of Ruidoso in the Sierra Blanca mountains, notorious for its summer horse races at Ruidoso Downs Race Track. Quaint Ruidoso has a fair share of nature mixed in with unique local cafes and restaurants. Stop by Noisy Water Winery for a wine tasting, or grab lunch at The Village Buttery for soup, salads, sandwiches, and a slice of their famous buttermilk pie.
Day 4: Tour Fort Stanton Historic Site
An interesting historic site 30 minutes outside of Ruidoso is Fort Stanton Historic Site, which served as an internment site for German merchant seamen during the Great Depression. With some buildings throughout the site dating back to 1855 and the American Civil War, the camp that initially housed German war prisoners and Japanese internees was later used by mob-threatened JapaneseAmerican families as a place of refuge during WWII. From 1960 to 1995, Fort Stanton was transformed into a low security women’s prison, as well as the State Hospital for the Developmentally Handicapped. General admission is currently free for children and only $7.00 for adults, making it an affordable day trip from Ruidoso.
Day 5: White Sands National Park
One of New Mexico’s biggest tourist attractions is White Sands National Park, sitting a little over an hour south of Ruidoso. What makes White Sands a stunning nature-lover’s destination is its rare gypsum sand dunes that can often be mistaken for snow by the naked eye. The dunes cover 275 miles of New Mexico’s desert in the Tularosa Basin, and are excellent for sledding down their powdery white sand in plastic snow saucers. Perfect for families with children of all ages, White Sands can be hiked, driven and picnicked by, or ridden by horseback with proper permits.
Day 6: Drive to Albuquerque
Ahead of your flight home the next day, drive from Ruidoso nearly three hours north to the large city of Albuquerque to spend the night. It’s hard to be bored in New Mexico’s largest city packed with Native American history, the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, and nearby Petroglyph National Monument.
Another family-friendly activity is riding the Sandia Peak Tramway, which transports passengers to the top of Sandia Peak via a 2.7 mile tram ride. At the top, riders are subject to stunning mountain views, trailheads, skiing during the colder months, and dining with a view.
Day 7: Fly home from ABQ
After spending the night in Albuquerque, return your rental car at ABQ ahead of your flight home. Grab a latte at Black Mesa Coffee Company after clearing security in Concourse A, or fill up on green chile chicken soup at USA Today-featured Comida Buena before boarding your flight home.

WOMEN BUILDING HOMES, COMMUNITIES AND HOPE
BY DEBBIE LINVILLE
Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County recognizes the critical role women play in their communities and their specific barriers to home ownership. Statistics confirm that female-headed households are more than twice as likely to be cost burdened compared to all U.S. households and single mothers are one of the groups more likely to experience barriers to opportunities in the country.
Even though there have been great strides made toward closing the gender wage gap, women earn on average 84% of what men earn and continue to face a unique set of challenges to accessing safe, healthy, and affordable housing. During the height of COVID, the cultural role of women and the uneven caregiving responsibilities were amplified. Work, schooling, and care for elders took place in the home for many women, and without a place of their own, it was hard! As Lauren Davis, Chief Advancement Officer, shared, “Homes are far more than a shelter.” Habitat for Humanity understands that helping families, especially those headed by women, build or improve places to call home is a critical, tangible way to build a strong and stable community, brick by brick, street by street.
That’s why Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County created The Hammer Society (formerly Women Build) to bring together passionate community leaders to help fellow women build a better future. The Hammer Society was initially composed of a few Habitat staff and board members, but within the first six months,
the group had reached 50 members and it continues to grow. Members of this dynamic and inspiring group pool their personal giving to collectively sponsor and build homes for local families, while regularly gathering for networking and volunteering events to connect with like-minded women.
With the quick growth of The Hammer Society, just one year after the group was unveiled, they learned that their efforts would soon help Whitney Butler and her family build a place to call their own.
FIRST HOMEOWNER
Whitney Butler, who will purchase the first home sponsored by The Hammer Society, could not be happier or more grateful. Whitney started trying to buy a house for herself, her three daughters and her mother a few years ago, but the overheated real estate market made it impossible for her to compete with other buyers for homes that were affordable and in decent shape.
After meeting certain income, credit, and rental history qualifications, Whitney was selected as a future homeowner and began the process of earning her “sweat equity” hours by helping to build her own home, volunteering in the ReStore, and attending financial education and home ownership/maintenance classes. Upon the closing of her home, Whitney will begin paying an affordable mortgage back to Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County.
Whitney shares, “This is a wish come true. Finally, we will have the space we need! This is the first time we will have more than one bathroom and I’m looking forward to having a yard where my daughter can have a basketball goal.”
“You put a lot of work into the program, but it is so worth it. I really love everything that Habitat is doing in our community.”
~Whitney Butler
THE HAMMER SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP
If you are interested in joining this philanthropic community of passionate, dedicated women, membership is available at the following levels and can be paid in annual, quarterly, or monthly installments.
• Empowerment Level $5000
• Self-Reliance Level $2500
• Stability Level $1000
• Hope Level $500
• Strength Level $250
With the vision of a world where everyone has a safe, healthy, and affordable place to call home, Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County’s homeownership program removes barriers to opportunity, success and health that might have been part of a family’s life for years, if not generations.
Across Forsyth County, there is a shortage of affordable housing solutions available to households whose incomes are at or below the poverty guideline, or 30% of the area median income. Many of these households are severely cost burdened, spending more than half of their income on housing, often leading them to having to sacrifice necessities like nutritious food, healthcare, and reliable transportation.
Through partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, families can experience the security of owning a home rather than renting; the comfort of knowing one’s neighbors and seeing children play in their yards; the stability of putting down roots in a community; and the long-term investment that helps build personal wealth.
Habitat helps families break down barriers to a brighter future every day.

A Strong Community to LEAD the Women of our Future
BY JOY NELSON THOMAS
As the founder and executive director of LEAD Girls of NC, a Winston-Salem-based nonprofit focused on developing selfawareness, confidence and leadership skills in young girls, I’m immersed in this work, yet even found myself struck by a statistic from the National Report on the State of Self-Esteem: 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough or do not measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with family and friends. At LEAD, we recognize the critical importance of supporting, encouraging and mentoring at-risk girls to help them see their value and know they absolutely do measure up.
This mission and our work would not be possible without a strong community of women here in Forsyth County stepping forward with their time, talents and treasure. When started LEAD, I self-funded the organization for its first six months as we built a network of board members, donors and volunteers.
Now, six years later, LEAD has grown from serving 66 girls per year to more than 350. We’ve expanded our in-school programming facilitated by LEAD’s professional staff to nine middle and high schools across the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district. Within these schools, we’re also working with more grade levels to further grow the number of girls we serve. In the community, we’re hosting record numbers of girls and their parents at our community programs such as the Fall Expo and summer fashion entrepreneur camp. And, in late 2022, we’ll grow our physical footprint as LEAD moves to larger office space where we can host group activities and other events.
This exciting momentum would not be possible without our dedicated LEAD volunteers, advocates and donors. As LEAD expands to serve even more girls, we know our community of support also needs to grow. If you have a passion for our mission, please consider becoming a LEAD volunteer and supporter It’s so inspiring for our young girls to see the amazing women involved with LEAD. Your belief in them and in LEAD energizes us to do even more. Our girls will change the world! www.leadgirls.org.
After participating in LEAD Girls of NC programs, participants reported…
90.0% said they have a number of good qualities. 79.0% said they are satisfied with themselves.
Joy Nelson Thomas is the founder and executive director of LEAD Girls of NC. A graduate of Salem College, Joy lives in Winston-Salem with her family. Outside of work, she loves family time at the lake, hosting large family dinners and her new-found love of gardening.
The Winston-Salem Arts, Cultural, & Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame
BY MEGAN TAYLOR
When you think of a walk of fame, usually something resembling the Hollywood Walk of Fame pops into your mind. This historic landmark in Los Angeles, California, features stars and names of famous people in motion pictures, television, radio, recording, live performance, and sports entertainment. It is an honor that many performers aspire to. More than 2,700 five-pointed stars are placed on a 1.3 mile long Walk of Fame. Millions of people visit them and try to find the star of their favorite “star.” Many places throughout the world have created their own version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, such as the Music City Walk of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, and right here in Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem is known as the City of Arts and Innovation, and has been for a while, but it wasn’t until 2014, when the city council voted unanimously to grant the Camel City with this title. Our city is known for the arts thanks to its many major art institutions, landmarks, and performance venues. The list includes the Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), the Sawtooth School, and of course, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), where well-known performers have attended and graduated.
In addition, we have the Arts Council and Trade Street has been designated the Arts District. In the heart of downtown, Trade Street is full of art studios, galleries, shops, and restaurants. The monthly gallery hops have become favorites of many locals. As for the Arts Council of WinstonSalem and Forsyth County, it originated in 1949 and was one of the first of its kind in the nation. This creation showcased our city’s dedication to art and celebrating it in all forms. Innovation also came into the art world of Winston-Salem through the development of the Art-o-mat machines. Old cigarette-dispensing machines were reinvented to dispense small pieces of art. Now, residents and visitors can always keep a little bit of the City of Arts and Innovation in their pockets. These machines are placed at various locations throughout the town. Lastly, The Stevens Center, the RiverRun International Film Festival, the National Black Theatre Festival,
and the Gears and Guitars Fest all celebrate the performing arts and welcome visitors to attend their shows.
Arts are alive and well within Winston-Salem. Many artists and performers have crossed through our city’s streets and as a way to commemorate the many contributions these people have made, the city created the Arts, Cultural, and Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame at the Benton Convention Center. Since 2016, artists have been recognized for their arts and entertainment industry accomplishments. Nominations are taken for honorees. Modeled similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, if accepted, honorees are given bronze stars with their name and induction year. This past July, a ceremony was held to induct the newest list of honorees, which included Howell Binkley, George Hamilton IV, Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin, and Anne Kesler Shields. Other artists with spots on the Walk of Fame are: John Ehle, Earline King, Stuart Scott, Sam Moss, Maya Angelou, Alvin A.C. Stowe, and Norman Johnson.
Applications for the 2023 honorees have not yet opened, but information on how to nominate an artist can be found online at: https://www. cityofws.org/486/Walk-of-Fame. If you would like to nominate a person, keep in mind some of the general criteria: the nominee must have exhibited excellence in their field for at least five years; made distinguished contributions to the community; have been a resident of Winston-Salem for at least five years; and have made a significant contribution to the arts or entertainment industry in the fields of music, dance, theater, writing, visual arts, motion pictures, television, or radio. Criteria may change as the next year’s nominations are open.
Winston-Salem has a long history of the arts and people come from all over to help us celebrate our artistic accomplishments. The WinstonSalem Arts, Cultural, and Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame is just one of the many ways these achievements are immortalized and will always be remembered. So, the next time you are at the Benton Convention Center, be sure to take a walk towards Cherry Street and take a look at the stars of the artists who have changed our community.

Design Elements
One of the benefits of working with a designer is the endless possibilities available to you as a consumer. Our years of experience have led us to the top manufacturers in the industry who specialize in custom-made furnishings. We spend days at the furniture markets in High Point and Atlanta, searching for the best of the best when it comes to custom furnishings.
“I love that sofa, but wish it were a different color.” I’m sure most of you can relate to that feeling of finding that near perfect accent piece, but it’s covered in an outdated fabric, or it’s just a tad too big. Custom-made furnishings allow you the freedom to choose. Our knowledge and resources combined with your vision will ensure a look that is truly one of a kind. We can customize fabrics that speaks to you, a color that reflects your personality, and a durable finish that suits the needs of your family. Hickory White offers a custom dining table program where you can choose a base, tabletop, size, and finish. Hickory Chair offers made-to measure upholstery as well as case goods. Other manufacturers have also gotten on board with custom size needs. Choose your fabric, finish, and specify the dimensions down to the inch. Case goods can be painted in multiple finishes, with the option to choose your style of hardware and sizing.
In addition to our manufacturers who offer customized items, we have established relationships with local craftsmen and artisans who can make virtually anything. Our custom cabinet makers can build a bookcase to fill a large space, or a built-in bench with drawers underneath. Woodworkers can carve an ornate headboard based on a photo of a family heirloom. Upholsterers can craft a custom settee destined to be a conversation piece. A faux artist can travel back in time to create an antique chest that looks a hundred years old. Many clients come to us exasperated after searching endlessly to complete their vision. “I know what I want, I just can’t find it!” Don’t settle for almost perfect. If you can’t find it, we can make it!
Visit us locally at June DeLugas Interiors, Inc. five days a week. We are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or make an appointment for other times. Enjoy the upcoming holidays with your family.

Settle Into Your Newly Constructed Home Just in Time for the Holidays with Kayla Berry Realtor/Broker
BY AMY HILL
Ready for a new home, but not sure where to start? As one of the top producing realtors in the triad, Kayla Berry Realtor/Broker has a passion for assisting prospective property sellers and buyers. If you’re thinking of placing your home on the market, you’re in luck. Kayla believes that now is the perfect time to sell your home, as buyers are hungry to get their property under contract. While the market has shifted, inventory is still low and offers are still competitive. If you’re in the market for an upgrade, Kayla and the Banner Team at eXp Realty in Winston-Salem may have just the skill set you need.
Those who attended the recent Winston-Salem Home Builders Association’s Parade of Homes in October likely caught a glimpse of The Banner Team’s newly built homes for sale in one of Clemmons’ most coveted housing developments, The Terrace at Havenbrook, as well as King’s Gentry Farm neighborhood. If you’re ready to sell, but can’t seem to find a listing that catches your eye, there is no need to be concerned. Following a tumultuous pandemic-era housing market, frustrated buyers are finding the housing market’s inventory to be shockingly low. In such a competitive market, Kayla’s expertise and inside scoop on the newest homes for sale are much needed. Fortunately, new construction is on the rise, allowing clients to have control and customize their homes as desired. Kayla works alongside Arden Homes throughout the Triad to remedy the current inventory crisis for clients, with their collaboration in selling properties in The Terrace at Havenbrook providing stunning homes with brand new finishes for first-time home buyers, families, and residents of all ages and backgrounds. Kayla and the team at The Banner Team Properties work diligently to find unique floor plans tailored to fit the lifestyles and preferences of all prospective homeowners interested in calling The Terrace at Havenbrook their new neighborhood.
Growing up with realtors for parents, Kayla has always had an eye for real estate. At only eight years old she was accompanying her mother, Jerri Banner, to open houses to distribute brochures and help sell homes. In 2015, Kayla joined The Banner Team as an assistant, which inspired her to earn her broker license. She began taking classes to earn her license when she discovered that she was pregnant, and questioned whether she should continue working towards her goal. Two years later, however, Kayla earned her license in 2017, and was ready to jump start her career in real estate with The Banner Team.
While the education Kayla received during the pre-licensing process was great preparation for her career, she highly values hands-on experience and believes that she learns the most on the job. Kayla and her fellow team members at eXp Realty offer the best marketing available to sellers and are notorious for their top-notch technology. The team’s lead generation is unmatched, using a targeted marketing approach to reach buyers. Kayla explains, “We’re able to get your property in front of endless amounts of buyers in our area, in addition to advertising your property on all of our social media platforms.”
The Banner Team, founded by Jerri Banner, is staffed with professionals specializing in areas such as new construction, residential properties, and more. Kayla’s relationship with her colleagues, including her mother, is one of her favorite aspects of her job as a broker. Although many individuals may cringe at the thought of working so closely with a parent, this is far from the case for Kayla. According to Kayla, “My mother is our team leader and is a wonderful mentor to the agents on our team.” Kayla never hesitates to ask her fellow team members questions about their past transaction experience, which has helped her gain knowledge in order to sharpen her real estate skills and provide her clients with the best advice for snagging their dream home.

Over the past 33 years, Brookridge has provided a setting for seniors to enjoy retirement and receive quality health care if needed. “Live the life you deserve” is more than a slogan at Brookridge. It’s an ideology that is woven into every decision. The commitment to offer the most gracious and comfortable state-of-the-art lifestyle for every resident across the continuum of health care services has earned Brookridge the reputation as one of North Carolina’s most respected providers of long-term care year after year.
Forward-thinking, relevant, and innovative, Brookridge is continually evolving to enrich the quality of the senior living experience. Recently, extensive renovations were made to all common areas and the 137 independent living units on campus – a gorgeous, contemporary facelift that left no space untouched. Carefully thought-out decisions on everything from reconfiguring and expanding existing activity and living spaces to selecting the “just right” color scheme and lighting fixtures reflect Brookridge’s commitment to stay current with the needs and desires of older adults today and in the years to come.
Life at Brookridge is all about living well – from quality care to quality activities designed for a happy, healthy, and active lifestyle.
INDEPENDENT LIVING AT BROOKRIDGE
alternative dining venue and easy access to the beautifully landscaped outdoor patio where foodie happenings like the recent “sweets and champagne” take place, makes this a popular spot to eat and raise a glass!
• Independent Living Units: Continually updated to align with new standards, independent living units have recently been given a complete overhaul - new kitchen and bathroom cabinets, granite countertops, and remodeled shower/tub areas. Five spacious apartment floor plans are available, which can be customized with residents’ preference of paint colors, luxury vinyl tile flooring, carpet, and cabinets. Likewise, Brookridge offers a variety of garden home floor plans, tailored for residents with their choice of cabinetry, flooring, and paint color scheme selections and once returned to inventory, two of the three tiers of garden homes will receive an additional renovation step beyond the scope of the mainstream makeover–removal of walls for a more open floor plan.
• Exterior Makeover: The recent renovations to all common areas and independent residential accommodations were complemented by carefully planned, fresh landscaping decisions. Removal of older trees to reveal gorgeous views of the property, new exterior lighting to add another layer of ambiance and safety, and tasteful plantings to enhance the natural beauty of the 46 wooded acres of Brookridge campus were the perfect finishing touch.

Traveling to a new country can be overwhelming, and common sense can fall by the wayside when travelers are overwhelmed with exciting new sights, foods, and cultures to explore. Sadly, failing to prepare for worst case scenarios can quickly backfire, making your highly anticipated trip take a dark turn. Here are a few safety concerns to consider and suggestions on how to mitigate your risks while traveling internationally.
THEFT OR LOST ITEMS
Pickpocketing is a common trip-ruiner for unsuspecting travelers everywhere, especially in major international tourist hubs such as Barcelona, Paris, and Rome. With no shortage of tourists to practice the tricks of their trade on, professional thieves abroad are so slick that even seasoned travelers sometimes fall prey to being scammed or robbed. In extremely crowded, unfamiliar territory, it is necessary to take safety precautions in order to prevent your important documents, money, or expensive valuables from being swept away. While there are a multitude of anti-theft daypacks and travel bags on the market, my personal favorite is the pricey, yet highly secure Loctote Flak Sack (www.loctote.com).
Loctote’s Flak Sacks are cut-resistant, lockable, and RFID protected, making them nearly impossible for pickpockets to break into. What’s great about Loctote is their bags’ abilities to be locked to stationary items such as chairs for added security while dining in restaurants or traveling on busy trains. I carried a Flak Sack Sport throughout southern Italy and was never once concerned about the personal belongings on my back while taking metros and wandering down bustling streets.
Less costly precautionary measures include never flashing expensive jewelry, accessories, and smartphones, as well as carrying money and valuables in front or internal pockets (no back pockets, please). Additionally, always pack physical photocopies of passports, IDs, insurance cards, and other important documents in case an unfortunate trip to the U.S. Embassy is necessary.
ILLNESS AND INJURY
There is nothing worse than waiting months for a major trip, only to get sick the second you land in your destination. Depending on the country or city you’re traveling to, pharmacy hours and access to over-thecounter medications can vary. To be safe, stock up on cold and flu remedies, anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory medications, and firstaid items before leaving the country and carry them with you in your carry-on luggage. Be sure to pack extra doses of your prescription medications in case of unexpected delays or difficulties returning home. If you want to be ultra-prepared for health concerns abroad, shop around for travel insurance that includes emergency medical care, and check with your current U.S. health insurance provider to see what’s already covered in your current plan.
I’ve heard countless stories of travelers who unexpectedly experienced “airplane ear” or even a rupturing of their eardrums mid-flight due to air pressure changes. If you happen to be experiencing allergy or upper respiratory symptoms a week or two ahead of your trip, visit your doctor and have your ears checked out before stepping onto the plane. Purchase earplugs, take decongestants and nasal spray, or use chewing gum to help your ears adjust to air pressure changes and prevent pain or hearing loss.
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Another mistake travelers often make, especially in 2022, is an over-reliance on technology. Even with an international phone and data plan (which I highly recommend), there is no guarantee that your destination or accommodation will have adequate cell service or a fast wireless internet connection. Print physical copies of your hotel reservations, train tickets, and bus tickets to prevent any technology hiccups. I also strongly advise travelers to invest in a portable power bank (Anker is an excellent brand) to charge phones, cameras, and tablets on the go. Depending on the size of the power bank, airlines might prohibit them from being included in checked luggage due to safety concerns, so pack it in your carry-on to keep it in the cabin with you throughout the flight.

WEATHER = CHILI
BY TANNER JOHNSON
There’s nothing like a warm pot of chili once the weather starts to get colder in early fall. You can take it to the next level with the smoky flavor that I love by cooking it on a smoker.
Smoked ground beef mixed into the perfect blend of classic chili ingredients is a great way to embrace the spirit of fall. Enjoy this on a chilly day while your favorite football team is on TV, or when you are entertaining a large crowd and wanting to exert minimal effort, so that you can spend some more quality time with your company.
I saw a lot of different people online from Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook raving about this over-the-top chili, and after trying it myself I now understand the hype. Although it was popular on social media, I struggled to find an actual step-by-step recipe, so I ended up freestyling it and could not be happier with the results. I had fun playing around with some of my favorite seasonings for this recipe, and I hope if you try this at home that you will also enjoy this smokey take on a fall and winter classic.

1 onion diced
1 jalapeño diced 1 bell pepper diced 2 cans of diced tomatoes
1 (or 2) can of stewed tomatoes
2 cans of Rotel (fire roasted and hot are my favorite)
INGREDIENTS INSTRUCTIONS
1 can of navy beans (drained)
1 can of red kidney beans
½ can of black beans (drained)
2 lbs. of 80/20 ground beef
Cackalacky® Pepper Powder seasoning
Chili powder
Cumin Cayenne pepper
Salt and Pepper
1. Preheat smoker to 275-300° (lower if you prefer more smoke flavor and have more time) use a vertical pellet smoker. Any smoker will suffice, you can even do this in the oven, but you’ll miss out on that smoky flavor.
2. Sauté onion and peppers in Dutch oven with some olive oil until softened.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients into the Dutch oven.
4. Season with some pepper powder, chili powder, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper (and any other seasonings you may like).
5. Stir up and simmer on low on the stove while you get your meatball formed and seasoned.
6. Form ground beef into a round, dome
like shape (flat on the bottom) to sit on the grill grate above the Dutch oven.
7. Season beef with pepper powder, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
8. Put the Dutch oven into the smoker, then place the ground beef directly above the Dutch oven on the rack above if your smoker allows or place a wire rack or extra grill grate on top of the Dutch oven directly for the meat to sit on.
9. Stir chili every 30 minutes or so to make sure it doesn’t reduce too much or burn.
10. Let the ground beef cook (on top) until the internal temperature is around 145-150°.
11. Take the meat and crumble it up into small pieces, place it into the Dutch oven.
12. Stir to blend into the chili.
13. Continue smoking for at least another 30 minutes to an hour if you have time. Stirring a couple of more times.
14. Pull it out and enjoy some delicious homemade chili! We like to serve it with some shredded cheese, fresh avocado slices, and use Frito scoops instead of a spoon!

Remaining Grateful in the Hard Times
It’s safe to say we know our lives will not be filled with positive and prosperous moments every single day. There is negativity and evil in the world that fights against our best efforts and some battles are harder than others. As I keep maturing and gaining more victories under my belt, I’ve noticed one important detail. From the very beginning, the battle is already won! No matter how tumultuous, God has already fixed the fight in our favor. Oftentimes, our unique battles are aimed to prune us and make us stronger for the next fight. It can sound exhausting simply realizing we will be fighting against forces our entire lives, but we have one thing that makes it bearable and keeps a smile on our faces through the toughest times. That’s grace.
We don’t truly know why humans were tasked with living an earthly experience before we move on to be with the Lord - and even that sentence is debatable but that’s not the point today. One thing know for sure is that we were not sent to Earth to live toxic and oppressing lives. He doesn’t even want us to live mediocre lives. The Bible tells us that He wants abundance and peace for our lives and “has plans to prosper us, not harm us” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). But God always gives us the option to choose our fate. He will never be forceful with His will.
So if it’s easy to choose to lament over your challenges, can it be just as easy to choose gratefulness?
My answer is yes.
Some may argue it’s easier said than done, but if you set up your days to always see God working in your life, it will become second nature to smile at the challenges that come your way because you know it’s already handled.
Keeping a track record of your answered prayers is an extremely effective way to remember that God is always listening to you. Look back on these often and you’ll see how your stress and worry about the outcome was pointless because God prevailed. Going forward, allow that to bring you serenity and confirmation that you will not fall without getting back up stronger. And who doesn’t want to be stronger? It’s almost a mind trick, but it can truly transform your mindset to welcome the challenges and get excited for what victories you’ll gain from the next battle.
Abiding in God makes it easy to remain joyful in the toughest times. The Bible has answers to every problem we will face in life, including business,

relationships, mental health, family and anything else. Immerse yourself in a good study bible that’s easy to comprehend so you can find scriptures easily to help you combat your obstacles. I recommend the Life Application Study Bible.
I write all of this to say, God loves you no matter what you do! You are no better or worse than the person who chooses to complain and lament. But how easier would your life be if you remained grateful at all times? Think about this scripture going forward: “Consider how the wild flowers grow…Not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today,
and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you?...” (Luke 12:27-28 NIV)
Do your best to remain grateful in the hard times and at all times. have faith in you.

BY MACK MOORE
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 120 million homes older than five years and in need of energy-efficiency updates. The largest portion of a home’s energy demand comes from the heating and cooling of the interior.
With as much as 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy lost through its windows, energy efficiency is often a driving factor in calling Budget Blinds of North Winston-Salem & Mt Airy for window treatments. Upgrading to fashionable window treatments and saving energy is a win-win for clients who choose Budget Blinds’ products for their home.
Today’s window coverings are more than decorative— Budget Blinds shades, shutters, blinds and films currently offer homeowners many options for cooling their homes and reducing heat loss, making summer and winter less of a strain on the energy budget.
Mack Moore, franchise owner of Budget Blinds of North Winston-Salem & Mt Airy, says, “Customers often enjoy the added benefit of energy efficiency when purchasing window treatments. Every home is different and dealing with temperature as well as solar rays can be difficult.”
Choosing energy-efficient window treatments provides increased insulation, offering protection against heat loss during the winter and heat gain during the summer. Many Budget Blinds energy-saving options are:
• Cellular shades are designed with honeycomb-shaped pockets or ‘cells’ designed to enhance a home’s energy efficiency by keeping air from escaping or entering a home. Inert air is a poor conductor of heat, helping honeycomb shades create an effective temperature barrier between the window and the room. Another benefit of these shades is that they block the damaging solar rays from a home, particularly in winter when there is little natural shade from trees.
• Shutters are designed to make rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Budget Blinds wood and composite wood shutters act as effective insulators. Because the shutters fit tightly in window frames, they also block the transfer of heat through air movement or convection, creating a barrier between outside temperatures and your home’s interior.
• Window film deflects 99% of damaging UV rays, reducing heat gain and protecting your furniture, fabrics and carpets caused by exposure to sunlight. Insulating window films are most effective at blocking certain wavelengths of sunlight, making them useful in warm, sunny regions and for south- or west-facing windows. Window films also prevent interior heat from being lost through windows to the outside — stopping as much as 50% of radiant heat transfer in winter and 60% of heat absorption in summer.
• Draperies can be so much more than interior decor statements. Budget Blinds offers a variety of fabrics and styles when increasing energy efficiency around windows. Draperies with lining and interlining - blackout lining protects from summer sun and heat, while thermally-lined drapes shut out the cold – are now fashionable parts of a room and very different from the insulated drapes of yesteryear.
Like shades and shutters, draperies are only efficient when they’re closed. However, if they’re used in conjunction with another window covering, such as a honeycomb shade or a wood blind, you can let sun in during daylight hours and effectively shut out colder air at night. Floor-to-ceiling drapes that fold back against the wall allow drapes to seal off the window, preventing drafts and loss of heat through convection.
• Since every home is different, Budget Blinds’ motorization options allow your window treatments to become energy-efficient, as they can be set on timers to maximize or minimize heat gain as needed. Automated window coverings can allow a homeowner to set times for the opening and closing of blinds and shades, and coordinate with HVAC thermostat settings to get the most energy savings from window treatments.
Mack Moore understands energy efficiency and can help clients choose the best options for their homes and provide design consultation to blend energy savings with up-to-date home fashion. Many times, a simple discussion with the homeowner to repair or replace existing blinds or add window film is all that is needed to make a home as energy efficient as possible.

CLEAN LIVING WITH COACH JANE
A little about me:
WHO AM I?
Hi! My name is Jane Daniel. I am a proud mom to three healthy boys, a lover of the great outdoors, a forever student, health nut, exercise enthusiast and native of the Triad. I am also a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
WHAT DO I DO?
I am a holistic health coach with multiple certifications in all things related to health, nutrition and exercise. In 2015, I received my first certification as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I haven’t stopped taking classes since then and hope I never will! The areas I’m most passionate about are my training in Ayurveda, Polyvagal Theory, Female Hormone Optimization and Weight Loss, and most recently the Journey of Intrinsic Health. All of these have one thing in common; the body has the ability to heal itself if we allow it to do so.
I’m super excited to have the opportunity to share all things health for the lovers of Forsyth Woman magazine!
The Health Benefits of Gratitude and Tips for Making it a Daily Part of Your Life
According to scientists, gratitude is a deep feeling of appreciation…having the propensity to see the glass as half full. There isn’t a one size fits all approach to practicing gratitude. However, research psychologists Robert Emons and Michael McCullough have found that gratitude results from recognizing that you have obtained a positive outcome and that there is an external source linked to this positive outcome.
Studies have shown that gratitude makes positive impacts:
• Alleviates symptoms of depression and anxiety
• Enhances sleep quality and duration
• Supports greater cardiovascular health
• Reduces inflammation
• Improves responses to stressors
• Boosts social, family and romantic relationships
Writing down what you are grateful for in the morning is a great way to start your day or at night before bed to calm your mind for a dreamy sleep. I love the apps Gratitude365 and Journal for my journaling. Sending a quick text or email to someone you are appreciative of is another way to reap the benefits of gratitude. Reflection and awareness of your appreciation are the keys to reaping all the benefits of gratitude.
A trick love to do on my morning walk or daily commute is to find “glimmers” throughout my day. Glimmers are little bits of happiness that are experienced; the more glimmers you acknowledge, the more they illuminate other glimmers.
Ways to Implement your Glimmers:
• Create a feel-good playlist for driving to work or waiting in the carpool line
• Diffuse your favorite essential oils
• Get in touch with nature, notice the beautiful color and sounds that surround you
• Curate your social feeds with people, places, and groups that bring you joy
• Ritualize your coffee or tea making process; use a mug that brings back wonderful memories
Healthy Tips on Thanksgiving Day
On to some practical tips for navigating the holidays while enjoying family and friends. The average American gains EIGHT pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s but you don’t have to be this statistic!
Try these helpful tips when enjoying a big meal with family and friends:
• If you love strength or resistance training, have a great workout before your meal using big muscle groups like legs and back. Your muscles are starving for glycogen which means your muscles will use up the calories instead of your fat stores!
• If you aren’t sure what will be served, offer to bring a healthy side. Roasted Brussels sprouts and bacon are a crowd favorite!
• Arrange your plate in a healthy way!
1. Prioritize protein. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient compared to carbs and fats. The thermic effect is greater, too; the body uses approximately 20% of protein’s calories to break it down into usable energy. This means that a 500 calorie serving of beef tenderloin only registers as 400 calories!
2. Add above ground vegetables. Above ground veggies are full of fiber and water, increasing your feeling of fullness. Extra credit if you consume lots of color in these veggies. Our hunger hormone leptin, which is the “put the fork down” hormone, says, “I’m good” when color is consumed. Each color of the rainbow has different phytonutrients which research has shown to satisfy leptin.
3. Have 4-6 bites. If you only have a dish once a year at Thanksgiving, go ahead and have 4-6 bites of it …your grandmother’s sweet potato casserole, your aunt’s twice baked potatoes, or that delicious homemade chocolate pie. Enjoy and savor every bite!
• Walk! Instead of hunkering down on the sofa after a big meal, go for a walk with the fam. A “postprandial” walk will help lower blood sugar, reduce bloating and gas, and improve sleep!
The bottom line is that a “flex” meal even once a week is not going to derail your weight loss/maintenance efforts. The issue arises when you have a slow drip of “this and that” every day between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Be mindful of what you are consuming, express gratitude, and move as much as possible during this time of year.

Erika Taylor is the creator of Tayloringstyle Blog and founder of Taylor Your Closet, her personal styling business. Her love for style, writing, and helping others came together to produce a business that makes day-to-day styling attainable for women from all walks of life. She tailors each of her clients' wardrobes so that they can save time putting outfits together, feel confident in what they wear and conquer whatever the day brings.
This month we’re shopping for outfits at Accent Prone in Kernersville. Owned by the husband and wife team of Cheri and Justin, Accent Prone is the local place to shop for eclectic fashion and furniture. In fact, they have a wonderful selection of clothes, accessories, and gifts. With the Holiday season just around the corner, you can definitely go there to find all kinds of gifts for nearly everyone in your life!
Let’s get into the looks! This first one has all a great mix of all the things I love, neutrals + versatility. This ribbed v-tank is the perfect ‘winter white’ that you can layer and pair with so many pieces. I styled it with these wide-leg distressed jeans, a tan pair of lug boots & quilted Z-Supply jacket. For a warmer look, you could easily switch out the tank for a similar color long sleeve top or turtleneck.
Let’s take a moment for this hat and brown quilted jacket. Both can be styled in so many ways! This hat would pair with a sweater dress (mini or midi) and taller boots, denim jumpsuit and booties, or with flare jeans, a ribbed sweater and western boots. This quilted jacket can also be worn with leggings and an oversized (or more fitted) flannel, lighter denim and a graphic tee or with a leather pant and fitted long sleeve top.
*Style Tip: You can really switch up a look by switching out denim and/ or adding accessories (shoes, hat, jewelry).
As you can see, this is another type of look you can pair back to the hat. I’m telling you ladies, versatility in your closet is key! We could elevate this look even more by adding a longer brown jacket and switching out the lug boots for a pointed toe bootie.
Ladies, when in doubt about your outfits, keep it simple. One thing I tell all of my clients that I’m styling is that you can almost never go wrong with a white or black top and jeans. Of course this type of look will not work for a formal event, but for most day-to-day, more casual lifestyle events, this is a very simple styling tip that sometimes we overlook.
However, especially in the cooler temps, you can easily add layers like this beautiful cream shacket, and yep - the hat and tan lug boots!
This next look, we simply switched out the jeans to a black, wide-leg distressed denim and added this must-have fall hat. This look with a brown or black western bootie is chef’s kiss, perfecto. As I mentioned earlier, you could easily swap the tank for a long sleeve or turtleneck top.
For this next outfit, we are elevating the black distressed denim with this gorgeous blouse. It can be worn fully tucked in, how have it, or with a nice little French front tuck. This color is so beautiful on all skin colors and can dress up a simple pair of denim or trousers.
It is no secret that Accent Prone has excellent staples that can be added to your closet, but you should also know that they have some great gifts that you can give this holiday season!
Whether it’s for your mom, friend, sister, grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law, or yourself, ABLE genuine leather bags from Accent Prone make great gifts and are always a best-seller. Plus they have gorgeous jewelry, including e-Newton and Little Words Project bracelets and more!
Happy shopping!
They say to leave the best, or coziest, look for last and this Z-Supply outfit should go in the dictionary for cozy. This jacket is reversible. My mind was just as blown as yours probably is right now. It is from their active line and one reason why love it so much is because of how versatile (and warm) it is! I paired it with the Z-Supply V-neck you saw in the last look and with these cozy wide-leg sweatpants. Cozy up with this jacket, wear it to your workout classes or even throw it on with a pair of jeans.
XO, Erika Taylor

TAKE SAFETY INTO YOUR OWN HANDS WITH TEDDY ’ S TACTICAL
BY AMY HILL | PHOTOS BY PHOTO ARTISTRY BY MELINDA
With days only getting shorter this fall and winter season, there’s no better time to stock up on self-defense and prepare for fewer hours of daylight than the present. Those looking to defend themselves, their families, and their homes without the hefty responsibility of owning a firearm have no shortage of self-defense options when shopping with Teddy’s Tactical.
Teddy’s Tactical is the newest venture from Pam and Jack Welker, local familiar faces with numerous years in the food and beverage industry under their belt, as well as experience in managing their consulting company Uptown Hospitality Group. After purchasing a Byrna SD (Self Defense) device for Pam in 2019, the duo was amazed by the number of family and friends who also wanted one for their own protection. As a result, Pam and Jack launched Teddy’s Tactical in July 2022 as an Authorized Byrna Dealer, and have become passionate about sharing less-lethal self-defense alternatives ever since.
Teddy’s Tactical supplies top-of-the-line, less-lethal self-defense weapons that protect and deter threats with just the right amount of strength. A Byrna device appears similar to a gun, but is filled with non-lethal projectiles, such as hard plastic pellets or pepper (oleoresin capsicum) pellets. Unlike owning a gun, Byrna SD owners can relax without the responsibilities and hoops to jump through. Because background checks are not required, purchasing a Byrna is a quick and seamless process for users 18 and older. A perfect birthday or Christmas gift for husbands, wives, young adults, and the elderly, Teddy’s Tactical customers can sleep well knowing that their family and friends are safe in Byrna’s hands.
While Byrna devices seem like guns to the naked eye, they are lightweight, easy to use, and less intimidating for individuals not yet comfortable with carrying or operating a firearm. What makes Byrna Launchers so unique are their portability and method of operation. Powered by CO2 cartridges, these devices shoot .68 caliber kinetic and chemical irritant projectiles at targets up to 60-feet away. Although it is recommended to aim away from targets’ heads or necks, especially at close range, a variety of projectiles such as
Byrna Pepper balls for standard protection, Byrna Kinetic balls for target practice, or even Byrna Max balls consisting of pepper and tear gas, allow users to decide the level of effective, yet non-lethal, impact they choose to have on potential aggressors. These chemical projectile balls are launched at speeds of up to 300-feet per second and explode upon impact to cause eye and throat irritation, making them just as effective at deterring threats if a Byrna user misses their direct target.
Teddy’s Tactical provides customers with a multitude of color variations, accessories, and equipment for Byrna owners. Waistband holsters, cartridge and projectile refills, and foldable target traps are only a fraction of the accessories available to clients. New customers will benefit from investing in the Everyday Byrna SD Starter Kit, which includes a Byrna SD Launcher, one sling bag, a 5-round magazine, 5-count pepper projectiles, and an 8g C02 canister. Unlike selfdefense pepper spray, which puts users at risk of accidentally spraying themselves rather than their aggressors, Byrna SD users are deliberate with their aim and pulling of the trigger, with the device utilizing manual safety features to prevent unintended launches.
Teddy’s Tactical invites those interested in purchasing Byrna products to test out the product in-person before making a purchase. With Byrna SD devices being simple to aim, load, and store, novel Byrna users will be hitting targets in no time. Named after a friendly 10-month-old Bernadoodle (no pun intended), Teddy’s Tactical is passionate about individuals having the right to defend themselves and their loved ones. As authorized Byrna dealers, the Teddy’s Tactical team encourages potential customers to contact them with any questions or inquiries they may have about Byrna products. Visit Teddy’s Tactical online at www.teddystactical.com to read more about the products sold, watch tutorials on how Byrna Launchers operate, and to read the latest news stories about crimes that likely could have been prevented if victims had been equipped with the proper self-protection devices.
Call Teddy’s Tactical at (336) 506-8822 or email info@TeddysTactical. com to test out your Byrna before it’s too late.

Coping with Uncertainty
recent pandemic taught us more than we ever wanted - or thought we needed - to know about getting through uncertainty. Some managed better than others, turning to healthy coping mechanisms, while others succumbed to harmful activities and substances. Some came out stronger for the experience while others remain shaken, wary, untethered.
We weren’t alone in our uncertain isolation, and we are still here, thanks in large part to our ability to cope with the new, the unknown and the inherently uncertain. When we step back, we realize that we know this place well because we’ve spent our lives amidst uncertainties large and, thankfully, small. A baby cries, not knowing when it will be soothed; a child wonders if she will make the team; a teen frets about being accepted into college; a young wife wonders if they can make ends meet; a woman is anxious about her cancer returning. The stakes can get pretty high, can’t they?
RETOOLING
Uncertainty accompanies us at every turn, making us feel as if we have no control at all in this life. And it’s true: we control very little, except that is, how we cope, how we manage, and how we carry on. So here’s to all of us for trying, for doing our best. And maybe, with a few refreshed tools in hand, we can make a greater peace with uncertainty. Here are my top picks from the insightful sources I’ve tapped into; some of them may surprise you.
JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
SIX TOOLS FOR DEALING WITH AN INTENSE MOMENT OF UNCERTAINTY
Acknowledge that you are experiencing uncertainty and that, right now, it is getting to you. Make that okay by being compassionate with yourself.
Be mindful of your breath. When we are anxious and stressed about what’s uncertain in our world, our breathing becomes more rapid and shallow. Work on slowing it down and deepening it.
Move around. Doing so creates a physical interruption that helps to reduce stress and quell anxious thoughts. Even better, get outside to take in the natural beauty and fresh air.
Reach out to someone you know will listen to you with kindness, not judgment.
Focus on the present. Instead of catastrophizing, begin to train your mind to refocus its attention on the present. The more you do so, the less uncertainty will get the better of you.
Take the reins of what you can control. Take one positive action that’s aligned with your values or your goals. Perhaps you extend a random act of kindness or simply weed the garden – both of which you control!
THREE TOOLS FOR THE LONG HAUL
Challenge your need for certainty. Remind yourself that many good things transpire unexpectedly while we are catastrophizing or fearing the worst.
• Adopt a stoical, realistic view of certainty. In other words, make peace with the fact that life is one wild journey of joy and pain that rides on the wings of uncertainty. Reflect on how you have traveled through all of it, mostly intact!
• Know your triggers. Maybe listening to the news, getting lost in social media posts, or that weekly call to your ever-anxious Aunt Bertha triggers your uncertainty fears. Plan ahead by modifying your exposure to triggers because doing so is largely within your control.
• Proactively take good care of yourself. You know the drill: a healthy diet, enough exercise, ample relaxation and positive relationships are key to supporting your ability to manage uncertainty.

Whether you’re a wristwatch lover or a necklace novice, there’s always something new to learn when it comes to finding the right piece of jewelry for yourself or your loved one. Why shop for sentimental valuables at a cold commercial retailer in the mall? When it comes to gifting family and friends with quality accessories for the holidays, or customizing a piece of jewelry to your liking, stick to Wingo’s Fine Jewelry - Clemmons’ own small-town gem.
Store owner Danny Wingo has been in the jewelry business since the age of 14. Decades later, Danny has only grown a stronger appreciation for jewelry, and an even stronger affinity for providing unmatched customer service. Major jewelry retailers in the Triad might have an excellent selection of gold, silver, and precious stones to peruse, but they often lack the warm, welcoming community atmosphere that Danny and his team at Wingo’s Fine Jewelry strives to create for everyone who walks through the shop’s doors.
While customers are able to shop for valuables such as engagement rings and wedding bands, Wingo’s also carries high-end watches, designer rings, pearls, and more. Danny and his team stay busy fulfilling custom jewelry orders from clients and working hard to find a design that will perfectly suit individual customers’ preferences. If you’re looking to customize a ring but have no clue where to start, Danny’s extensive knowledge of jewelry-making makes him a safe place to fall. Because all of Wingo’s custom pieces start off with a simple sketch, Danny sits down with customers and listens intently to what exactly they’re looking for. He sends sketches off to Wingo’s jeweler, who uses the sketches to create wax molds, which give customers a better idea of what their jewelry will look or feel like as a finished product. Being able to hold and try on a wax mold of a custom piece of jewelry helps customers determine whether they’re pleased with their design, with the helpful expertise of Danny and his team, or if their design needs a bit more fine-tuning before it’s ready for casting. The casting process is where the jewelry-making magic truly begins, followed by the application of hand-set stones, diamonds, and other intricate details.
Danny started fulfilling custom jewelry orders nearly 30 years ago and found a jeweler with a knack for hand-carving pieces of jewelry. To Danny, jewelry making is nothing short of an art - which pairs nicely with the decor found around the store. Lining the walls of Wingo’s Fine Jewelry are paintings for sale by the talented artist Phillip Philbeck, a resident of Marion, North Carolina. Ask Danny about one of Phillip’s paintings, and he will explain the techniques, paint style, and small details regarding each work of art in the shop with ease. If you don’t enter Wingo’s Fine Jewelry with an interest in art, you’re sure to leave with one.
Holidays are right around the corner, and Wingo’s is the prime Triad location for showering your loved ones with silver or gold. With multitudes of new merchandise in tow just in time for gift-giving season, Wingo’s houses popular paperclip necklaces, new Citizen watches, chains, and even bracelets to wow friends, family, and significant others. In need of an engagement ring, but need advice on where to start? With 42 years of experience, Danny has seen many engagement ring trends come and go, and has a keen eye for which diamond will be the perfect ring for popping the question.
Whether you’re in need of a new piece of jewelry, or you’re looking to size or appraise old items, visit Danny and his team for high quality products, outstanding customer service, and maybe even a newfound appreciation for art. Visit in-person in Clemmons at 2503 Lewisville Clemmons Rd., or call the store directly at (336) 766-8505 to speak to a team member. MasteringMindfulness
BY LESLIE SPEAS
Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—and accepting it without judgment. Scientific examination has validated that mindfulness is a key element in stress reduction and overall happiness. Researchers believe the benefits of mindfulness are related to its ability to dial down the body’s response to stress.
One powerful, yet simple, mindfulness activity involves conscious breathing. It engages the parasympathetic nervous system which calms us down. This keeps our stress hormones in check and quiets our busy minds. There are many different breathing patterns that you can use but I like square breathing. You simply breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold at the top for a count of four, breathe out for a count of four, and hold at the bottom for four. Try this pattern three or four times and check in with how you feel.
Meditation is a form of mindfulness that typically begins with your breathing. It involves sitting silently and paying attention to thoughts, sounds, and sensations of breathing on parts of your body, bringing your attention back when your mind starts to wander. Not sure how to do it? There are lots of great apps that can help, with Calm and Headspace being two of the most popular.
We are typically not consciously present. Our brain’s default mode is to be habitually lost in our thoughts—running a sort of internal narrative. As we’re going about our usual daily activities, our brains switch into this low-energy state, which is not mindful. When this occurs, try to refocus your mind on the task at hand. Set periodic reminders on your phone and take a mindful breath and refocus when your mind starts to wander. You can even put a rubber band on your wrist and snap it as a reminder. You will be more focused and productive!
Mindfulness doesn’t always have to take place when we are sitting quietly. It can happen with movement! Yoga and tai chi are great mindfulness activities as well as walking in nature. You can really be mindful with any type of exercise. Just set your intention and do your best to stay in the present moment.
There is so much adversity, negativity, and uncertainty in the world right now. It just takes a scroll through social media or a look at the day’s headlines to launch us into a negative spiral. Gratitude is a form of mindfulness that involves expressing appreciation for what we have. There are a number of activities that you can do to practice gratitude. A few suggestions include keeping a gratitude journal, writing a letter of gratitude or putting three things in a gratitude jar that you are thankful for each day.
One final mindfulness tip is to unplug periodically. Technology certainly isn’t a bad thing, as it allows us to navigate the world around us with greater ease. But it’s also important to unplug every now and then to focus on taking care of yourself. All that connection can be very distracting.
In conclusion, our world is a stressful place. Practicing mindfulness is the number one strategy that can help! Try some of the activities suggested to protect your well-being and live a more peaceful life.

The Evolution of a 35 Year Favorite
BY DENISE HEIDEL | PHOTOS BY JEJ PHOTOS
In 1987, a local family-owned cafe was the ultimate hot spot for incredible homemade desserts and exceptional service. Midtown Cafe & Dessertery founders Scott and Brenda Gerding built a loyal following through delicious cakes, pies, cookies, and other made-from-scratch baked goods. Initially located in Thruway, The Dessertery was often packed with people of all ages eager to enjoy a special treat… whether ending the evening, hanging out with friends, or just getting out of the house for a bit. The desserts were served with a signature bold coffee, and it was the first restaurant in Winston-Salem to feature an espresso machine.
Within a few years, Midtown’s growth had proved substantial, and they moved to Stratford Village, expanding into a full-service restaurant. The Gerdings utilized a tried and tested business model established by their family in Gatlinburg, Tennessee – “The Pancake Pantry.” Drawing on that experience, they brought the same kind of menu to Winston-Salem, offering all-day breakfast and a variety of lunch specials in addition to their classic desserts. Over time, hours were extended, and a dinner menu was introduced.
For 35 years, Midtown Cafe & Dessertery has been the go-to meeting place during the week and a favorite destination on the weekends. Nine years ago, the Gerdings
decided to bring on business partners with the plan to eventually transition ownership. Jeff and Stephanie Cayton were invited to share in the decades-long vision. With Jeff’s 25+ years of restaurant industry experience as a restaurant supplier, he was excited to contribute to the Midtown legacy.
Since the Caytons joined the business, many changes have occurred. The menu has expanded to include brunchstyle options, and the alcohol menu has expanded to include mimosas and flavored champagne flights. In addition, the POS systems (fka the cash registers) were updated and modernized, which proved to be instrumental in the survival of COVID. As the to-go business exploded during that time, the restaurant was ready to adapt to meet the needs of customers who still wanted their favorite meals and desserts through Doordash delivery.
Midtown Cafe & Dessertery may be well-established after 35 years, but it is ever-evolving to meet the needs and expectations of customers. The restaurant is noted for having the best, most wellrounded menu in the city. There is truly something for everyone, from the family dining with the kids to the friends sharing a meal…. from the business colleagues negotiating a deal to the college student working on a project. From sweet to savory – Midtown has it all covered.
While the menu may change from time to time, the key to success is a priority placed on great food, excellent hospitality, and service.
In 2022, the Caytons, now the sole owners of Midtown, decided it was time to give the restaurant a facelift. The dining room has been updated with new flooring, updated upholstery, and with the removal of some walls, the restaurant is more open and airy.
But the most significant change is the transformation of the Dessertery. It is now the restaurant’s focal point – a nod to Midtown’s earliest days when the desserts were the lone focus! The fresh look showcases desserts from all angles. In addition, the framed digital menu board brings a modern touch with that classic hometown look.
In addition to the Dessertery’s transformation, Midtown is also expanding into a full-service coffee shop. Coffee enthusiasts can choose from any number of signature coffees, espressos, or teas – whether they enjoy their beverage with a delicious dessert or grab their drink on the go!
So while the Dessertery has a new look – the biggest change of all is the big, shiny espresso machine that transforms that corner into the complete Dessert and Coffee Bar experience!
Midtown Cafe & Dessertery is centrally and conveniently located at 151 South Stratford Road in Winston-Salem. Their normal hours of operation are 7 AM – 8 PM Sunday – Thursday and 7 AM – 9 PM on Friday and Saturday. Call them at 336.724.9800, or visit them online at MidtownCafeWS.com. Stay up-to-date on special events and features by liking their Facebook page or following them on Instagram.

Five Hidden Gems of
BY AMY HILL
Itching for an Italian getaway, but looking to take the road less traveled? Below are five off-thebeaten-path vacation destinations to add to your Italian bucket list.
OTRANTO
Often unheard of, Otranto in Italy’s southern Puglia region sits at the very end of Italy’s “heel” in the Salento peninsula. A tiny town with limited accommodations, Otranto is perfect for honeymooners, families with small children, and those in search of a leisurely seaside vacation with calm, turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. Those uninterested in making Otranto an overnight destination can easily access the small town by car or bus from the city of Lecce for a day trip. Popular sightseeing spots in Otranto include Baia dei Turchi, a sandy beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing, along with the 15th century Aragonese Castle in Otranto’s town center. The Salento peninsula’s terrain is relatively flat, making Otranto pedestrian-friendly and easily accessible. Since Italians typically take their summer vacations in August, Otranto beaches are best enjoyed in June or early September to avoid crowds.
TROPEA
Arguably one of the most stunning beach towns in Italy, Tropea is a hard-to-reach summertime spot in Italy’s southern region of Calabria, nestled between Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. Tropea’s historic center sits atop a cliff overlooking miles of crystal blue views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. On clear days, onlookers can also spot views of Stromboli in the distance, an Aeolian Island home to an active volcano that is frequently visited by boat.
Calabrian cuisine is spicier than other regions of Italy, with Calabrian peppers being the region’s culinary claim to fame. To reach Tropea and explore nearby cities in Calabria, a car is almost necessary, as public transportation throughout the region can be sparse. The trek up and down from the historic center to the beach can be difficult for those with mobility issues, but there is limited parking available near the beach.
PITIGLIANO
While Tuscany as a whole is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, Tuscany’s remote hill town of Pitigliano is a picturesque day trip for those willing to make the drive. While you won’t find many options for dining, roaming the town’s streets and ancient Etruscan remains makes the trip well worth the drive to the top. Often referred to as “the little Jerusalem,” Pitigliano is heavily influenced by the Jewish community and is home to less than 4,000 inhabitants. Frequently overlooked by tourists in Tuscany due to its numerous hill town competitors, Pitigliano is an excellent pitstop while visiting Tuscany to escape the hordes of wine-hungry tourists.
CASTELMEZZANO
Hidden in Italy’s arid and less industrious region of Basilicata, Castelmezzano is known as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Although relatively remote, Castelmezzano and its neighboring town Pietrapertosa are surrounded by rocky mountains commonly referred to as the Lucanian Dolomites. Less than 1,000 inhabitants reside in Castelmezzano, with the destination being ideal for adventure travelers looking to hike,
rock climb, and try out the village’s high-speed zipline “Il Volo dell’Angelo” (The Angel’s Flight). Those looking to stay overnight in the village should expect less than luxurious living quarters, as options are few and far between with spotty wireless internet service. The surrounding views and nature, however, more than compensate for the village’s lack of tourist-friendly dining options and accommodations. The region of Basilicata is challenging to reach by train in comparison to more densely populated regions in Italy, but nonetheless possible with a bit of research. Most visitors choose to drive around the region for maximum freedom and convenience. Daytrippers from Basilicata’s better-known ancient city of Matera can reach Castelmezzano by car or organized tour in a little over an hour.
SYRACUSE
The Sicilian seaside city of Syracuse (or “Siracusa” in Italian) has a history rooted in ancient Rome and Greece, and is known for its ruins within the Archeological Park Neapolis. Many tourists choose to stay in the historic center on the Island of Ortigia, home to Greek ruins such as the Temple of Apollo, along with some of Syracuse’s best dining. In the summer, Sicily is almost unbearably hot, so it is best to take the trip down to Syracuse in the spring or fall for comfortable weather and lower shoulder-season prices. Syracuse is accessible by train from the eastern Sicilian city of Catania. Driving in busy Sicilian cities can be a daunting task for tourists unaccustomed to driving in bustling southern Italian traffic. Opt to visit most of Syracuse on foot to fully take in the culture and sights, as well as work up an appetite for delicious Sicilian cuisine and cannolis.

Top 10 Fall Beauty Tips from Five Plastic Surgeons and Four Staff Members at Forsyth Plastic Surgery
BY ELLEN BASSETT
Before you know it, we’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas together, heading out to parties and reuniting with friends and family members we may not have seen for quite some time. So we asked the boardcertified plastic surgeons and aestheticians at Forsyth Plastic Surgery and The VISTA for their Top 10 Fall Beauty Tips to help us look fantastic now and into the new year. And we think you’ll be interested in what they had to say.
Tip #1 - Don’t stop using your sunscreen.
As board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gil Kingman says, “Even though summer is over, it’s important to still think about sunblock. The sun can cause aging, wrinkling, redness and loss of elasticity, even in the fall and winter.” Dr. Kingman recommends finding a sunscreen that you like that’s not greasy and you don’t mind putting on every day. He says, “EltaMD is one we recommend and sell in our MedSpa The VISTA.”
Tip #2 - Plan recovery time after treatments.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andy Schneider says, “Think about when you’re going to be going to parties, what you’re going to be doing and when you’re going on vacation — and give yourself a couple of weeks to recover from anything we do, whether it be a small injection, a Botox treatment or a chemical peel.” Dr. Schneider also notes that many patients prefer to have their surgeries over the holidays when it’s easier to take time off work and not rush the recovery period. He says, “Just give yourself two to four weeks to recover — or whatever amount of time your doctor recommends — and plan your appointments or surgeries accordingly.”
Tip #3 - Get a fall peel.
Dr. Leslie Branch, another board-certified plastic surgeon at Forsyth Plastic Surgery says, “We have some medical-grade peels that can really kickstart your skin for the next season and can help prime your skin right before the holidays and Christmas. She also recommends medical-grade, clinicallyproven skincare products to help smooth skin texture, encourage cell turnover and correct pigmentation issues.
Tip #4 - Consider laser resurfacing this time of year.
As Dr. Gil Kingman says, ”This is a good time for people to consider a procedure like laser resurfacing because as the weather gets cooler they might be outdoors a little bit less and they’ll have more time to recover.” Dr. Kingman notes that laser resurfacing can be done under local anesthesia and he says, “It’s generally tolerated very well and after a little downtime, it can give some quite striking results.”
Tip #5 - Book surgeries in the fall for full recovery by next summer.
Dr. George Lawson III, another board-certified plastic surgeon at Forsyth Plastic Surgery says, “Fall is a great time to book surgical procedures. Our five boardcertified plastic surgeons and experienced nurses can guide you through a smooth recovery and have you ready for warmer weather in the spring and summer.” Dr. Gil Kingman agrees. He says, “A lot of the body contouring that we do is really good for any time of the year, but if you plan your procedure or treatment for the fall, you’ll certainly be set for beach season next year.”
Tip #6 - Start small.
Dr. Kingman says, “People who are new to plastic surgery may want to start with something small. For example, upper eyelids can be done under local anesthesia and can make a huge difference with a very short recovery time for patients with excessive skin around the eyes.”
Dr. John Fagg, another board-certified plastic surgeon at the practice says, “Whatever surgical procedure you’re considering, make sure the surgeon is board-certified. That’s really important.”
Tip #7 - Consider Botox or injectables to smooth wrinkles and add volume.
Dr. Leslie Branch sees great results with Botox and other injectables. She says, “Botox can really help smooth out wrinkles in your upper face. Fillers are great to add volume and help diminish fine lines and wrinkles on the lower face.”
Tip #8 - Book your appointments well in advance.
Trish Welch, Cosmetic Concierge at The VISTA says, “We’re booking patients all the way through the new year. It’s so smart to call and book your Botox or injectables early so you can get the days and times that work best for your schedule.” Dr. Leslie Branch agrees. She recommends patients go ahead and book their appointments and allow for 2-4 weeks of recovery time before any big event like a wedding or another important occasion.
Tip #9 - Look for budgetfriendly reward programs during the fall.
Danielle Lampky, one of the Cosmetic Concierges at The VISTA says, “I always recommend our patients sign up for rewards programs like Allē from Allergan or Premier Points from Obagi. Before the holidays you may find some special perks like double points. And these can really add up!”
Tip #10 - Discover some of the new lash and brow products that are new to the market.
Gina Racca, head aesthetician at The VISTA says, “Obagi recently introduced Nu-Cil for lashes and it’s been very popular to help thicken lashes and make them longer. They also have a new brow booster that we’re seeing great results with.” Kinsley Nix, another aesthetician at The VISTA says, “We also offer microblading for thin eyebrows and semipermanent makeup solutions for patients who want to have beautiful brows and expertly applied eyeliner that lasts all day and all night with no reapplying. It’s just so much easier if you have shaky hands or no time to keep perfecting your makeup.”
Timeless.

Research shows that high-quality, early learning through Pre-K better prepares children for kindergarten, increases test scores, and results in higher graduation rates and college attendance. So, why is access to affordable, quality Pre-K not a priority in Forsyth County? Well, now IT IS, thanks to the efforts of The Pre-K Priority, a collaborative of over 80 local early childhood education leaders and advocates.
In 2020, The Pre-K Priority launched a community awareness and education effort funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to better inform families and the community about the importance of Pre-K for every four-year-old. The Trust also commissioned a Pre-K feasibility study by Forsyth Futures, which underscored key community concerns including affordability and access. As part of the survey, nearly two out of every three families responded that there were not enough available high-quality Pre-K slots. Rising costs were another issue.
Thanks to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, The Pre-K Priority will receive its first public funds in support of local Pre-K classrooms and educators. At their September 22nd meeting, the Commissioners approved a $3.7 million ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) grant request to Smart Start of Forsyth County on behalf of The Pre-K Priority for a two-year project supporting 30 Pre-K classrooms and educators with specific high-quality resources and supports that are currently limited or nonexistent. The project will impact 540 Pre-K students and their families in addition to 60 Pre-K educators.
“Smart Start of Forsyth County is proud to administer the approved grant funding on behalf of The Pre-K Priority initiative and the multiple local partners involved. We thank the Board of Commissioners for its investment in the children of Forsyth County,” said Dr. Louis Finney, President & CEO of Smart Start of Forsyth County.
The two-year project will involve several organizations in Forsyth County that are part of The Pre-K Priority, including Smart Start of Forsyth County, Family Services of Forsyth County, WinstonSalem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS), Child Care Resource Center, Latino Community Services and Forsyth Futures.
“It’s vital that every four-year-old in our county have access to high-quality, affordable Pre-K if we want to realize the educational and economic goals we’ve set for our community. These children are the future of our community, and we need to give them the best start in life possible,” said Traci Ross, CEO of Family Services of Forsyth County. Family Services has convened The Pre-K Priority since the collaborative was established in 2015 and runs the local Head Start program. Head Start has open enrollment for Pre-K (and other programs) year-round for qualifying families.
• Support parents and families of the cohort using evidence-based programs and engaging Family Advocates/ Specialists; and
• Track outcomes, monitor fidelity of implementation and develop an integrated data system to connect early childhood education networks in the community.
More than 2,700 children attend Pre-K in Forsyth County, including those who participate in the NC Pre-K Program, in the Family Services Head Start program, in WS/FCS classrooms and in private community child care centers. The project’s model cohort will represent this varied landscape with classrooms located in licensed, private/ independent child care businesses, Head Start, WS/FCS and community child care centers who participate in the NC Pre-K Program.
Over the last year, the Forsyth County Early Childhood Education Task Force partnered with The Pre-K Priority to develop and adopt 19 recommendations to serve as a roadmap for structuring an accessible, equitable, high-quality Pre-K system. This fall, the Task Force will issue a final report outlining the series of recommendations for expanding highquality Pre-K in Forsyth County, reflecting much of what will be piloted in the twoyear program funded by the ARPA grant.
The Pre-K Priority outlined six primary outcomes to improve Forsyth County’s Pre-K system that the collaborative expects to achieve with the ARPA funding:
• Establish a high-quality Pre-K foundation using the project’s model cohort of 30 Pre-K classrooms and educators;
• Address barriers within the Pre-K landscape and set standards for future expansion;
• Maximize the unique strengths and collaborative effectiveness of Forsyth County’s early childhood education partners;
- Invest in the development and retention of Pre-K educators through coaching, technical assistance and salary parity within the project’s 30-classroom cohort to help inform scaling those aspects across the full Pre-K landscape;
“Pre-K can be a community game changer, especially as we strive to achieve educational equity, but it will take a significant investment of local dollars to make this a reality. Receiving this grant is a major step and we look forward to demonstrating the value of high-quality Pre-K with this two-year project,” said Dr. Finney.
Forsyth County will now join a growing list of counties across North Carolina who invest local dollars in expanding access to high-quality Pre-K, including Mecklenburg, Buncombe, Durham, and Wake.

Enhancing Your Emotional Intelligence
BY LESLIE SPEAS
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand emotions in ourselves and others, and our capability to use this awareness to manage our behavior and relationships. Put simply, it is the intelligent use of emotions. Most jobs involve working with other people so using our emotions intelligently is important. And of course, emotional intelligence is critical to interacting with others outside of work as well.
Some people may have a very high IQ but low emotional intelligence. A vision of a nutty professor comes to mind - someone who is really smart but not particularly effective at dealing with others. The good news is that, unlike our IQ, we can improve our emotional intelligence by enhancing our understanding of ourselves and others.
Below are four elements that make up emotional intelligence with a suggested action step to help you improve in each area.
SELF-AWARENESS
This is the ability to recognize your emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior. Further, it involves an awareness of your values, strengths, and weaknesses.
Action item: One of the most effective methods for the development of self-awareness is to spend some time reflecting. Ask yourself questions like the ones below and really reflect on the answers and what they tell you about yourself.
• What is most important to me?
• What am I trying to achieve?
• What am I doing that is working?
• What do I need to change to be most effective?
• Why did react the way I did to recent situations?
What would be a better reaction in the future?
SELF-MOTIVATION
Emotionally intelligent people are always seeking to improve themselves. They have a growth mindset and see feedback and constructive criticism as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.
Action item: Seek out feedback from your boss, coworkers, friends and family to identify areas where you can improve. Use this information to modify your behavior in a positive way.
EMPATHY AND SOCIAL SKILLS
The ability to demonstrate empathy towards others is critical to emotional intelligence. This involves feeling what they feel, understanding what they say, and being attuned to social signals about what they need or want. Once we can demonstrate empathy and recognize the emotions of others, we can proceed to cultivate and utilize our social skills.
Action item: Work on actively listening to other people. This involves attending to the whole message the other person is trying to communicate by minimizing distractions; using appropriate body language; summarizing what they say periodically; and asking open-ended questions. We often begin formulating our response as the other person is talking and should try to resist the urge to do that as it negatively impacts our listening.
EMOTIONAL REGULATION
Have you ever felt that your reaction was the wrong one? Have you ever overreacted? Emotionally intelligent people are able to recognize and regulate their emotions.
Action item: When in a situation where you feel yourself getting stressed or upset, practice the pause. Step away and do some breathing, take a walk, drink some water, etc. Come back to deal with the situation when you are in a calmer state and can respond thoughtfully rather than reacting in the moment.
In conclusion, cultivating emotional intelligence is critical to our effectiveness at work and in life in general. It will likely be easier for some people than others, depending on natural talents and dispositions, but we can all grow in this area. Try some of the tips shared to elevate yours!

Recipients of Triad Business Journal’s Family Business Award in 2022, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery has been serving iconic Moravian baked goods to customers since 1925. With a deeprooted family history in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area, Wilkerson is the oldest name in Moravian baking and has perfected the craft of the thin Moravian Cookie, the beloved Moravian Sugar Cake, Lovefeast Buns, Hot Cross Buns -and even Carolina Cheese Straws.
The niche Moravian Cookie is surprisingly quite the challenging cookie to make, with the dough being rolled out to a paper thin consistency. In fact, the Wilkerson’s remember when Moravian Spice Cookies were often referred to as “glass cookies,” due to their tendency to shatter like glass when handled roughly. Today, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery barely blinks an eye at the task of popping these complex cookies into the oven multiple times per week, with the Wilkerson family’s century of expertise under its belt.
This month, Wilkerson Moravian Bakery will open two holiday shops, with one located at 3443 Robinhood Road, Suite P in WinstonSalem (stay tuned for details on the additional location). Customers often frequent their current Miller Street location, which the family plans to keep open throughout the rest of the year. Additionally, Triad locals can stay tuned for Wilkerson’s announcing of their new permanent location, expected to open in 2023.
Wilkerson Moravian Bakery will also have a booth at multiple holiday shows this month, including the Greensboro Holiday Market on November 4th - 6th, the Charlotte Southern Christmas Show on November 10th - 20th, and the Greensboro Craftsmen’s Christmas Classic on November 25th 27th.
You can enjoy free Moravian Cookie samples and free Carolina Cheese Straws samples at any Wilkerson location or show. As the Wilkerson family loves to say, Taste Tells the Truth ®, so they encourage you to try as many as you’d like.
Gift-givers love sending Wilkerson Moravian Cookies, Moravian Sugar Cakes, and Carolina Cheese Straws to family and friends throughout the holiday season. Notorious for their very thin Moravian cookies, Wilkerson offers these crispy sweets in a variety of flavors such as the traditional Moravian spice, sugar, lemon, sugared ginger, delicious chocolate, orange brandy, and customer favorite Blackbeard’s Cookie, a butter rum blend inspired by Blackbeard the Pirate, who lived on the coast of North Carolina.
The perfect sidekick to a warm winter cup of coffee, Wilkerson’s Moravian Sugar Cake is baked fresh daily and is best served warm out of the oven. In fact, the sugar cake is Wilkerson’s claim to fame, being the first product that put the Wilkerson family on the map of most-loved Moravian baked goods. Made with a yeast dough of pure butter, honey, potatoes, and combined with melted brown sugar and cinnamon, Moravian Sugar Cakes are shipped fresh from Wilkerson’s Bakery on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
Adding a savory snack to the mix, Wilkerson offers Carolina Cheese Straws for those with a saltier palette. Baked with top-notch extra sharp cheddar, butter, and a hint of cayenne pepper for a kick of flavor, the cheese straws are ideal for holiday party snacks and corporate gifting.
Wilkerson makes gifting even easier by providing nationwide shipping and easy online ordering. Keep your eyes peeled for brand new, vibrant gift boxes this year for Moravian Cookies and gift pack options such as the Holiday Favorites Gift Pack which includes Spice Cookies, Sugar Cookies and two Moravian Sugar Cakes.

Twelve Tips for Dealing with Anxiety, Stress and Worry
BY LESLIE SPEAS
Are you feeling anxious, stressed or worried? Or all of the above? I’m pretty sure you’re not alone. I will spare you the statistics but suffice it to say that many of us are experiencing one or all of these in our lives currently. These concepts are often confused. They are certainly BFFs but let’s explore how they are different.
• Stress is a physiological response connected to an external event. Stress happens in your body and is generally a shortterm experience.
• Anxiety is a sustained mental health disorder that can be triggered by stress. It happens in your body and your mind. It tends to be somewhat diffuse, and it doesn’t fade into the distance once a threat is mediated.
• Worry occurs when your mind dwells on negative thoughts, uncertain outcomes or things that could go wrong.
Stress, anxiety, and worry actually serve a good purpose if they’re not experienced in excess. They push us to make necessary changes in our lives. They signal when we may be in danger and inspire us to take action. However, too much of these things can negatively impact our minds, bodies, and overall health.
So, what can you do if you are suffering from an excess of stress, anxiety and/or worry? Below are twelve habits that can help you get back on track.
1. Get enough sleep: Most adults require at least seven to eight hours to be well rested and perform at their best.
2. Exercise regularly: Find at least 30 minutes, three times a week, to do something physical. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress.
3. Eat a balanced, nutritious diet: Healthy eating fuels your mind as well as your body. And skipping meals isn’t a good idea as regular nutrition will help regulate your mood.
4. Avoid caffeine and sugar: Avoid consuming too much caffeine and sugar. In excessive amounts, the temporary “highs” they provide often end in fatigue or a “crash” later.
5. Don’t self-medicate with alcohol or drugs: While consuming alcohol and drugs may appear to alleviate stress, it is only temporary. Don’t mask the issue at hand. Deal with it head-on and with a clear mind.
6. Practice relaxation techniques: These activities dial down the body’s reaction to stress. Relaxation techniques include meditation, prayer, yoga, deep breathing, guided imagery and tai chi.
7. Do something for yourself every day: Take time from the hustle and bustle of life for leisure time, even if it’s just 15 minutes.
8. Have realistic expectations: Know your limits and be realistic about what you can do. Learn to say “no” to work and commitments that don’t fit in with your priorities.
9. Reframe problems: See problems as opportunities through which you can learn and grow.
10. Don’t try to control events or other people: Many circumstances in life are beyond your control, particularly the behavior of others. Learn to accept what is, for now, until the time comes when perhaps you can change things.
11. Ask yourself “Is this my problem?”: If it isn’t, leave it alone. If it is, try to resolve it and, once it is settled, leave it alone. Don’t agonize over the decision and try to accept situations you cannot change.
12. Connect with others: Develop a support system where you can share your feelings. A friend, family member, teacher, clergy person or counselor may help you see your problem in a different light.

BEST OF WINSTON YOUR COFFEE SHOP CHECKLIST
New coffee shops are opening up with some frequency in Winston-Salem, but here are our tried-and-true favorites. Next time you need a caffeine fix or a place to do some work, try one of these local spots! (And make sure to follow us on social media @bestofwinston for more inside info on the local food and drink front!)
1. SAYSO COFFEE
Walking into Sayso feels like you’re walking into your neighborhood friend’s house, it’s that cozy and welcoming. With a brightly lit interior and a large outdoor area surrounded by an urban farm, Sayso is the perfect place to meet someone over a cup of coffee. They use Black & White roasters for their beans, and each drink is poured with care. While they only offer pastries on Saturdays (and often they disappear quickly!), you’re coming here for the coffee anyways, and it is 100% worth it. 400 S Green Street, Winston-Salem
2. ANCHOR COFFEE
Anchor Coffee in the Innovation Quarter is the second location for this small batch roaster out of Wilkesboro. There is true craftsmanship in each cup, and you can taste the difference. Their shop also offers locally-sourced snacks, merchandise, and beans for purchase. Grab a cappuccino and spend a morning catching up on work in their industrialchic location. 486 N Patterson Avenue, Winston-Salem
3. CAMINO BAKERY
Camino Bakery made a name for itself as one of the first successful coffee shops in downtown Winston-Salem, and there are now multiple locations in the city due to its popularity. Camino uses Counterculture beans for drinks, with a very seasonal - very tasty - rotating menu to accompany their regular offerings. If you want to meet a friend or do some people-watching downtown, Camino is the place to be. 300 S Marshall Street, Winston-Salem and 310 B W Fourth Street, Winston-Salem
4. LOUIE & HONEY’S KITCHEN
Although everyone associates Louie & Honey’s with their cinnamon rolls first (as you probably should!), their full coffee bar lineup is a worthy companion to their spectacular treats. Served in dainty, mismatched china pieces, each drink feels special. Savor your lavender and honey latte in their chic space, and make sure to treat yourself to that slice of cake you’re eyeing, too.401 West End Blvd, Winston-Salem
5. DOUGH-JOE’S DOUGHNUTS & COFFEE
Come for the doughnuts, stay for the coffee. At Dough-Joe’s, you just have to try both! Take your cup of coffee to-go and walk Reynolda Village and trails, or snag a spot - if you’re lucky - at one of their indoor seating areas. The ambience oozes calm, we love giving ourselves an hour to read and enjoy our time here. 114 Reynolda Village, Winston-Salem
6. BOBBY BOY BAKESHOP
Another bakery with outstanding coffee, Bobby Boy Bakeshop does not do anything sub-par. The exquisite attention to detail in everything they do from the gold leaf flakes on delicate pastries to coffee ice cubes for your cold brew is mind-blowing. Though Bobby Boy doesn’t have a huge offering of drinks, what coffee they do make is crafted to perfection. 1100 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem

Chai Crazed?
Here’sWhyChai:HealthBenefits,
BY SUSAN B B SCHABACKER
With exotic Indian heritage, masala chai is known as “spiced tea” in Hindi. Historically, chai stems from royal roots and is thought to be credited to a king in the noble royal court of India. Traditionally, chai was served both hot and cold. This sippable and savorable Ayurvedic ambrosia boasts a long list of health benefits.
CHAI’S HEALTH BENEFITS
• Both black tea and spices are rich in anti-aging and antioxidants, preventing damage from harmful free radicals.
• Anti-inflammatory action can alleviate chronic pain and muscle soreness, as well as reduce risk of developing inflammationrelated diseases like autoimmune disorder, IBS, and arthritis.
• Heart healthy, black tea is full of flavonoids that prevent buildup of plaque in arteries, reducing stress on the heart. Also, cinnamon is known to lower harmful cholesterol.
• Find your focus. . . The brain boosting properties of chai can amp up mental alertness, improve concentration, and enhance cognition, all without the negative side effects of excess caffeine.
• Tummy troubles? Soothing to the stomach, chai black tea can improve digestion and is supportive of gastrointestinal health.
• With antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties, chai can help combat common colds and illnesses and ward off bacterial baddies from invading your immune system.
• Peace out period pain. . . No need to be miserable with your monthly menstrual cycle. A research study concludes that ginger, which plays a main role in chai, provides more effective pain relief than over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. Another study has concluded that ginger offers a pain-relieving effect on both the duration and intensity of period pain.
• Say “no” to nausea. If you’re feeling queasy, a cuppa chai can help you nix the nausea and provide relief from morning sickness.
• Stay sustained. . . Reduce insulin resistance, increase insulin sensitivity, and maintain blood sugar levels with the help of cinnamon and ginger in chai.
DIY CHAI TEA
Classic Chai - Make your own classic chai with your black tea of choice (like Assam, Ceylon, Keemun, English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast or a combo), pu-erhs, oolongs, green teas (sencha, bancha, genmaicha, hojicha, gyokuro, or gunpowder), rooibos red tea, and/or honeybush. Add whole or ground spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, and/or black peppercorns. Other spices add variation and complexity of flavor such as fennel, coriander, and nutmeg.
Fall Flavors for Perfect Pairings With Chai – Try adding apple, orange, pumpkin spice, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, ginger, fennel, almond/amaretto, hazelnut, and pecan to your classic chai blend.
Ginger Orange Spice Chai Black Tea – Add fresh grated or ground ginger, orange zest, and orange flavor extract (optional) to your classic chai blend.
Dirty Chai (For Tea & Coffee Lovers) - Simply add some of your fav ground coffee to chai black tea. Adding a dash of cinnamon is a spice-alicious addition.

Analysis Paralysis?
BY MIKE MCGILVARY, AIF®, PARTNER, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
I personally have found in today’s fast-paced world of information, the feeling of analysis paralysis can set in on one’s saving/investment plan. Information overload if you will.
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with a potential client who owned a local business. This individual was interviewing potential investment advisors and I could tell they were very eager to learn all their options.
During our discovery conversation, I was able to uncover the root of their savings plan anxiety. The uncertainty was stemming from where they should start investing discretionary money and how they should start. They kept telling me they felt behind the curve and that every other potential advisor they met with recommended a Roth IRA.
A Roth individual retirement account is a great place to start in our opinion, but we strongly feel when an investor deposits funds into a Roth IRA, it should be invested for long term goals. This is exactly why someone in their shoes should meet with a person in my profession, to discuss shortterm and long-term goals.
Time horizon is where we as an advisory team like to start when helping folks design custom savings plans. The business owner looked at me for a second, and said, “Well, it is a top priority for my family to look at purchasing a new home in the near future.” I thought to myself, “Perfect, this gives me a starting point to start designing their family’s investment strategy.”
It turned out for this family, it made more sense to open a non-retirement account instead of a retirement account (such as a Roth IRA) based on shorter-term goals and cash flow. Again, investing for the long-term is a great option that we also recommend, but the goal most important to this family was to build a savings bucket to assist with a possible down payment on a home.
The point I am striving to get across is, we as a team want to learn and build these plans for you. Please lean on us if you don’t know where to start or how to start investing your hard-earned dollars. Client education is at the forefront of our process and we can’t stress this enough.

Healthy Tips to Avoid & Combat Ovarian Cancer
BY SUSAN B B SCHABACKER
Instead of refined white flour and white rice, opt for more nutrient-dense whole grains such as quinoa, buckwheat, millet, oats, and brown rice. Instead of sugary treats and artificially flavored fruit sodas, get your sweet fix from antioxidantrich fresh fruits like a bowl full of berries, pomegranates, melons, or mangos.
Ovarian cancer is the 5th highest cancer killer among women and is responsible for more deaths than any other reproductive system cancer. It’s estimated that one out of every seventy-three women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime. With Ovarian Cancer Awareness month this fall, know the facts, spread awareness, and get healthier by taking measures to prevent this deadly cancer. Here are some tips and tidbits to improve your overall health and lower your risk of developing ovarian and other cancers.
As with other cancers, prevention and early detection are important. Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries and fallopian tubes and can potentially spread to other organs in the lower abdomen and pelvis. Female hormones, when out of balance, can cause a host of overlapping issues, so the more balanced your hormones, the healthier you’ll be. Some red flags of a hormone imbalance are mood swings and PMS and inconsistent menstrual cycle which can be characterized by painful, irregular, or lack of periods, or heavy bleeding, clotting, or cramping. Other signs might include thyroid dysfunction, breast tenderness, lumpiness, or fibrocystic breasts, low libido, or decreased fertility. Your doctor can check hormone levels to help pinpoint imbalances. If your hormones are out of whack, don’t worry. There are natural ways to help balance your hormones and get healthier to help lessen your risk of developing ovarian and other cancers.
Several drops of beneficial hormone-balancing essential oil combinations can be added to a carrier oil like jojoba, apricot kernel, olive, coconut, argan, or avocado oil. Choose combinations of thyme, rosemary, clary sage, sandalwood, frankincense, ylang ylang, geranium, bergamot, and/or lavender. Add essential oil drops to a roll-on or squeezable bottle to carry with you on-the-go. Tag-team both health and beauty benefits as you moisturize your skin, add shine and tame frizzy hair and flyaways, nourish dry and cracked cuticles, while balancing hormones at the same time.
Detoxing to keep your liver healthy can help balance estrogen and other hormones. Helpful herbs to consider, some which are also stress-combatting adaptogens, are milk thistle, dandelion root and leaf, ashwagandha, schisandra, burdock root, and artichoke.
Alleviating anxiety of your adrenals, known as your body’s fight or flight “stress gland,” can impact blood pressure and cortisol. Try relaxation and stress-relieving techniques such as meditation; guided imagery and positive visualization; deep, diaphragmatic breathing; aromatherapy; reflexology; and massage therapy. Body conditioning (including tai chi, yoga, and Pilates) and energy healing practices (like qigong and reiki) can help balance hormones while aligning the mind, body and spirit.
Opt for a nutrient-rich diet with lots of cruciferous vegetables including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and leafy greens. Studies suggest that cruciferous veggies help suppress inflammation and activate immune defenses.
Focus on getting your protein and good fats from oily fish, legumes, soy-based foods, nuts, and seeds. Try fish like salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel, and trout. Try a diversity of legumes and lentils like chickpeas/garbanzo beans, peas, pinto beans, lima beans, black beans, and kidney beans. Add foods such as edamame, tempeh, and fermented soy products like miso and natto. Nuts and seeds make ideal energy-sustaining snacks, including whole, unsalted raw walnuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds.
Amp up your smoothies with antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory ingredients to boost your health. Smoothies are a great way to get your greens (spinach, kale, and fresh herbs) down by drinking them. You can boost your smoothies with flax seeds/flax meal, chia seeds, spirulina, maca root powder, moringa powder, ginger root, turmeric root or powder, black pepper (which enhances absorption and magnifies health benefits), fresh mint, coconut flakes, and cinnamon.
Make informed decisions about your lifestyle and eat well to stay healthy and thriving while reducing your risk of developing ovarian cancer.

The Real Deal with Candice Deal
ESSENTIAL OILS: USE SAFELY & REAP THE REWARDS
BY CANDICE DEAL
Essential oils are a staple in my home. I reach for them over and over again. When I need a pick-me-up or help winding down, they are my go-to! My first aid, wellness and beauty staples. They are throughout my home, dotted in cleaners, balms and diffusers. They are powerful little bottles! Because they are so powerful, a single drop can be much stronger than we think. It takes thirty to fifty roses to make just one drop of rose otto essential oil! We have to use them wisely, especially when we are using them on our bodies.
Safely using them for aromatherapy and topically is quite easy! Diluting the oils is the key.
Some brands may tout their oils as being safe enough to ingest but I simply don’t think it’s safe or necessary in order to reap the benefits of the oils. We can benefit from them without ingesting them and essential oils are not regulated enough to be taken internally!
AROMATHERAPY
Take a deep breath! Many oils can be beneficial just by inhalation. A quick sniff of peppermint can awaken the senses, while a quick sniff of lavender can calm the mind. To do this you can simply remove the cap and breath in the scent. Studies have shown that athletes who take a whiff of peppermint oil before a work-out can increase their physical output.
Diffusers are a fantastic way to enjoy the aromatherapy of oils. They use water to dilute and disperse the oils into the air. Some diffusers will run for six hours on a small amount of water. These are fantastic ways to help when you have a cold or stuffy nose. You can add some peppermint and eucalyptus to a diffuser to help open up your airways. Or find some of the amazing blends that brands premix for you. Some really great ones are focused on helping boost immunity, drifting you to sleep (something I
use every night!) and even ones for focus for those times where you feel like your mind is in too many places.
You can make your own diffuser in the shower by adding some drops of an oil to the floor or your hot shower. The steam will carry the essential oil scents through the air. Again, using the opening aromas of the eucalyptus or peppermint when you might be sick or stuffy, but citrus ones make for an uplifting morning with notes of happy scents and for night time showers, you can add in some lavender or one of the calming sleep mixes. In addition to the aromatherapy of the oils, when you are using your oils, certain ones carry the terpenes (the compounds responsible for the scents of most plants) from the plants that are power packed with benefits!
TOPICALLY
Almost all essential oils can be applied topically but they must be mixed into a carrier oil to dilute. Essential oils are so potent and powerful that some of them, if applied directly to the skin, can cause some irritation. Lavender may be one of the exceptions to the rule for most people. Lavender can be applied to burns, insect bites and stings without a carrier oil to
immediately soothe and calm the skin.
Topically essential oils can be applied to sore muscles for ache and pain relief, even for headache pain relief. A mix of jojoba and peppermint oil is a staple in my desk drawer to thwart any headaches from stress or extended computer screen time. Just a dab on the temples and base of the occipital bone helps relieve a headache faster than any medication that takes time to run through the body’s system. Essential oils are often found in many skin soothing butters, mixed with other carrier oils and
carrier oils can be any of your favorites. Coconut, jojoba, almond, castor; this list goes on and on.
Some essential oils, you will find are stronger than others! Take oregano oil for example. This is a very strong oil, it’s great for killing off bacterial infections and it is known to be a hot oil. When it hits sensitive tissues on the body, it will feel hot. One drop should be diluted to a tablespoon of a carrier oil due to its potency.
The key to experimenting with essential oils is to always start with less, give your concoction a try and then add more, slowly, one drop at a time. Less really is best!

a Small Percentage, but Making a Big Difference
BY WSSU PHOTO
January 2020 was a challenging time for anyone to start a new job, with Covid looming and hitting hard in March of that year. But that did not stop Etienne Thomas from making a noticeable impact at WSSU as the new Athletic Director (AD) in January 2020. Director Thomas represents a small percentage of female ADs at Division II schools, in which only 21% are female, despite the growing percentage of female athletes (47% nationwide). That percentage of female ADs drops to 15% in Division I schools, as reported in a 2020 article by USA Today. The percentage of Black female ADs is even smaller.
Director Thomas may be in a small percentage of females in athletic department leadership roles, but she has already helped to strengthen the athlete experience at WSSU, and she is grateful for the dedicated coaches and staff, many of whom also teach in the classroom as well as on the court, field, or track. She is especially proud of the 3.0 overall GPA for the entire group of student athletes as well as for the 3.0 football team GPA. She brags on the community engagement of WSSU athletes in the local K-12 education system and in the campus partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield.
What attracted Director Thomas to the WSSU was the rich academic and Championship legacy of the university and its motto, “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve.” “I am an adopted member of the “Ramily” and love the school environment,” she says. WSSU was not the first North Carolina university that caught her attention. Born in Iowa and raised in New York, Thomas wanted to come south and try her hand at being a “Southern Belle’’ at North Carolina Central University. She completed her political science degree in 3 years, studied law at the University of Iowa, and was on her way to becoming a sports entertainment attorney when she gained experience in compliance and athletic operations and started climbing the leadership ladder
in athletic departments. Thomas gained experience at The University of Iowa, North Carolina Central University, Saint Paul’s College, Howard University, San Jose State University, The University of Kansas, and Kentucky State University. Applying for leadership roles at many of these institutions meant she was sometimes the only candidate of color interviewing. Traditionally, athletic directors have been white men. This reality continues to this day, influencing pay for female ADs and perpetuating the racial and gender bias that prevents credentials from speaking for themselves.
“Stepping into a board room can mean being recognized first as a woman, then as a Black woman, then as an experienced, credentialed Black woman,” she notes.
Thomas recommends that young women interested in a career in leadership in athletic departments to first get experience through internships, volunteering in high school or college, youth sports or even work at sports complexes or coliseums. Explore schools with sports management degrees, but almost every college has some level of sports program to tap into to gain the necessary experience. She feels that a degree in a sports related major is not as essential as finding a mentor or faculty member who can provide guidance along their journey.
Thomas appreciates her leadership role at WSSU and acknowledges that Chancellor Robinson has created an environment where women leaders can thrive and feel supported.
She encourages anyone who wants to support the university and its students and sport programs to volunteer mentorships, internships, or post-graduate employment to students and graduates seeking experience. WSSU has a limited athletic budget and can benefit from annual donations of funds, time, talent, land, or other resources for scholarships, endowments, or planned giving. Thomas and her staff take an equitable approach to making the funds spread as far as possible for every sport and every student need, medical as well as academic. She urges the community to come to campus and support a sports event, see the Red Sea of Sound Marching Band, attend the October 1st homecoming game and parade, or support the cheerleaders. No degree of support is not too small. Etienne Thomas’s impact at WSSU is big! Events can be found at www.wssurams.com.

Clemmons Food Pantry has been a stalwart beacon of hope in Forsyth County for nearly 20 years. From a small Sunday school project at Clemmons United Methodist Church to the proud owners of a new building, the Clemmons Food Pantry and its volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide supplemental groceries to local residents. Without judgment, we welcome everyone in our community.
When COVID-19 struck in 2020, the plans were in motion to build the new Clemmons Food Pantry. Although many places in the community closed their doors, the pantry remained open and adapted new protocols for operation in order to never stopped serving food.
We were very fortunate. The government began putting emergency food and community funding into the economy. We were flush with food and grant opportunities as we made the investment to create a larger and more functional space for our clients. As COVID kept coming around in new variants, the new Clemmons Food Pantry was built, and the facility was relocated.
Thankfully, the pandemic has been declared over. But, with that, there is large drop in government-supplied food and eligible grant money.
BY STEVE ELLER
As Clemmons Food Pantry looks to the holidays during new times of record highprices and supply chain disruptions, we have found ourselves with shelves emptier than we would like to see and donations and grant opportunities at record lows.
Clemmons and Forsyth County have always been generous to us as we have grown and touched so many lives in the area. In these new times, we wanted to remind everyone of the many ways you can make a difference to those in need in Forsyth County.
Neighborhood Food Drives – Ask your HOA or create your own. Many students need volunteer hours and service projects, and a neighborhood food drive of nonperishable goods is an easy, fun project. The pantry can help you get set up.
Church, work and school food drives are also easy and challenging ways to brighten the holidays.
If a food drive is more time-consuming than you would prefer, consider donating as a memorial gift. Many offices will pool their resources to support the community during the holidays.
As the end of year approaches, there are other ways to donate to the pantry.
Gifts of stock: You or your broker may transfer stock to Clemmons Food Pantry. The donor is entitled to a charitable deduction for the full (appreciated) value of the stock and pays no capital gains tax. To transfer stock, you or your broker may contact Clemmons Food Pantry, and they will walk you through the process.
IRA charitable rollover: A donor of at least age 70 ½ may transfer from an IRA to the Clemmons Food Pantry annually. While there is no traditional charitable deduction for the rollover, the amount transferred does not count as regular income and is not taxed, so it functions, in effect, as a deduction.
It also satisfies the minimum distribution requirement of the IRA. To initiate a charitable rollover, contact your IRA plan administrator and provide instructions to transfer the funds to Clemmons Food Pantry.
Please visit clemmonsfoodpantry.org for more information, or call the pantry at 336.331.4332 for any assistance you may need. Clemmons Food Pantry is blessed to be in a generous community, and we appreciate your consideration as we face new challenges.

5 Ways your web presence can “wow” in your brand
This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.
There are so many places to show up online these days, it can be difficult to feel like you’re checking all the boxes! Overcomplicating what it takes to build a stronger web presence is what’s getting in the way of growing your business online.
Permission to change that?
I promise that your best web presence is found when you are present. It’s not about being everywhere or doing everything, but choosing a few key areas digitally to show up and really be present with your audience of future, present and past customers.
Here are a few intentional tips to help add some “wow” to your web presence.
BUILD BRAND RECOGNITION.
Ask yourself, “What am I sharing in the digital world to make me memorable?” There are so many oversaturated markets and competitors, what steps are you taking on your website, social media, advertisements that help you stand out? It’s easier than you think! Start by checking if you’re using the same profile image across all online platforms and even your business card. Next, work on honing your brand voice! The way you speak in videos, write your blog posts, deliver your sales copy should all sound like it’s coming from the same brand. Last, enable brand guidelines for your business to ensure that yourself and any team members or contractors involved are keeping all your visuals, voice and any other aspects of your brand consistent.
SIMPLIFY YOUR WEBSITE.
Your website is your cornerstone content, the place you want the most visitors because this is where you drive them to conversions, sign-ups and sales! Stand out without the bells and whistles and focus on what’s really going to “wow” leads. Can viewers understand the who, what and how of your business? Find opportunities to clearly state these things throughout multiple pages. Can someone access you and your offers? You want it to be easy to see who this business is run by so you can build trust and connection. Show a clear way to schedule a consultation or buy from your shop.
SHARE VALUE.
Before someone even buys from you, your web presence should be giving them value! Are you giving away the “good stuff”? I’m not talking about deep discounts. Are you focusing on giving them something for coming your way that helps them see how valuable your business is? On social media it can be a quick video with tips you know your audience will benefit from. Your website could include helpful blog posts that instruct, entertain or encourage your reader. What ways are you creating in your online presence that invites your audience or customers back? It’s all about relationships and adding valuethat’s where buyers come from!
BUILD TRUST AND AUTHORITY.
You want to become the “go to business” in your audience’s eyes for whatever problem you’re going to be the solution to. Finding multiple ways to share testimonials and reviews are going to be your trust gaining gold. This is the social proof you need to gain trust and excitement over hiring and buying from you. If you have existing reviews, make sure you’re incorporating them into your web presence. Repurpose them across your website, social media posts, service or pricing guide, Instagram stories or reels, inside a blog post and more! At the end of the day reviews are just a storytelling tool and people love a good story! Don’t forget to reask often and share how to leave you a review often! People may love working with you but get busy, it’s your job to follow up and remind them how and where to leave a review.
Hustle & Heart Challenge
This month challenge yourself to take a closer look at where you’re showing up online. Where is there a current opportunity to add a little more “wow” factor? Create a list of 3 things you’re going to improve and add some dates to them for accountability to get them done!

Shining A Bright Light On The Teen Mental Health Crisis
BY ABBIE MERHOFF, FOUNDER, FITNUT
Teens in America are in the midst of a mental health crisis. Adolescence is a time when youth are struggling to fit in, emotionally and socially. They are vulnerable to bullying, social ostracization, family dysfunction, problems in school, and trauma, any of which may trigger a mental health issue.
The proportion of adolescents who have experienced a major depressive episode has steadily risen in recent years. The emerging mental health consequences of COVID-19 have added urgency to the need to find and treat adolescents experiencing depression.
Nathan Copeland of Duke Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences notes, “We have seen a nearly two-fold increase in depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms among children and adolescents.” Copeland added that, “Nearly 25 percent of kids are experiencing anxiety that’s impairing them.”
While using social media to stay connected to their social communities can be positive for teens, extensive use of social media also carries risks. Social media use can negatively affect teens by distracting them, disrupting their sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.
One local parent shares, “Parenting teens today can’t be compared to any past generations. No matter how hard we try to protect their developing brains, they see things on screens we were never privy to in our younger years. It changes the actual wiring of the brain.”
Winston-Salem based licensed therapist Debbie McCaffrey comments, “Research abounds supporting the fact that anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and other mental health concerns are on the rise among teenagers. The contributing factors are many, but one thing is certain - teens everywhere are hurting. Now is the time for adults to take an active role in
the lives of the teens in our community and family by opening the conversation about their mental health. A simple, “I care about you and I’m wondering how you are doing,“ is an easy way to engage young people in this important conversation. As adults, it’s part of our job to provide a safe space for teens to share what’s really going on in their hearts and minds.“
There can be a negative stigma associated with the topic of mental health which prevents many students and families from coming forward to get the help they need. Mental health stigma can lead to discrimination, whereby adolescents with mental health issues are treated differently or poorly because of their condition.
We invite you to join us as we expose the great need in our community to help our teens know they are loved and that there are people willing to listen and help them.
The mental health epidemic, especially in adolescents, only receives attention when a tragedy occurs or a life is lost. The Stroll into Light event recognizes that each person is fighting their own battle every day. Whether that is anxiety, depression, or any mental health related issue, no one person should feel alone in their situation. As a community, we must support each other and advocate for peoples’ stories to be heard. At this candlelight event, each attendee will receive a candle to reflect and walk side by side in the spirit of hope. For families and friends who have possibly lost a loved one to mental illness, they will have the chance to release a lantern into the sky in remembrance. A Stroll into Light will also have an optional time of prayer, and there will be an opportunity to receive hope from individuals who themselves have risen from the darkness to walk in the light of life!

Celebrating a Colorful Autumn
BY SUSAN B B SCHABACKER
Celebrate a festive fall with a cornucopia of colors with DIY arts and crafts of beautiful blooms, pretty pine cones, and lovely leaves. From decoratables for your house to wearables for you and your loved ones, share and wear handmade gifts.
Whether you’re indoors or out, gathering materials from the great outdoors or from a craft store, enjoy an artful autumn. Savor nature’s scenery in this splendid season of fiery fall colors. This is an ideal time to take a breather, get fresh air, and go on a nature walk to collect materials.
Create a festive fall matching garland/hair piece, necklace, bracelet, earrings, and ring with a combination of whole chai spices (cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, black peppercorns, and cloves) for tea lovers – or choose acorns, pinecones, and coffee beans for coffee lovers.
Fall is perfect for tie dyeing clothes and scarves using nature’s ingredients and colors. The benefits of natural colorings
instead of synthetic chemicals are many. You can even grow your own dyeing garden (it’s edible, too!) or shop at your local farmers market for the natural components below. If you do grow your own garden, use naturally biodegradable, nutrient-filled produce as compost to keep you and your plants, flowers, and trees nutritiously sustained.
Skip the Rit and experiment with these natural dyeing ingredients: Yellow = turmeric, dandelions; Orange = oranges, carrots, curry; Purple = beets, red cabbage; Pink = rhubarb/ hibiscus; Red = strawberries, tomato paste, and berries; Brown = carob powder, tea, and coffee; Black = activated charcoal; Green = spirulina, matcha, herbs (like parsley), and moringa powders; and Blue = blue spirulina.
To tie-dye fabric, mix together one cup salt with 16 cups water and 4 cups vinegar, bringing the solution to a boil. Then, reduce heat and simmer fabric in mixture for 1 hour. Run fabric under cold water and wring out.
Bunch some of the fabric, twist, and wrap a rubber band around each twist as many times as you like to any of the sections. Then, soak the material in the natural dye until it reaches the desired shade in any of the colors. You can pour homemade color concoctions into sprayable bottles or pour dye over fabric. When ready, carefully cut off rubber bands and line dry fabric after dying.
Fall calls for lots of candles.
Using an old CD as a base, glue a candle in the center, then arrange acorns, mini pinecones, dried orange slices, and whole chai spices (cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, black peppercorns, and cloves) along the base and to the outside of the candle.
Also using CDs, create cool coasters with real pressed flowers, herbs, and leaves.
Some pretty pressables include pansies, Johnny Jump Ups, violets, shrub roses, strawflower, chrysanthemums, marigolds, calendulas, zinnias, lavender, and chamomile. Gather flowers, herbs, and/or leaves and press
within the pages of a big, heavy book, tucking the flowers between two tissues or paper towels. Place something heavy on the book and wait patiently for up to two to four weeks as the flowers dry. Paint the CD base with acrylic paint or cover it with a tissue paper collage. When the base is dry, arrange the pressed flowers on the coaster, glue down, and top with two coats of clear varnish.
Fall is a time to curl up with a cozy book and readers rejoice with festive fall bookmarks. Cut out a base shape such as a rectangle or fall leaf on cardstock or construction paper. Lay out pressed flowers, herbs, and/ or leaves, then glue down using as little glue as possible. Tip: water down white glue and use a soft brush to adhere. For variety, add poetic words, either handwritten or printed from tissue papers, newspapers, magazines, or books.

Veterans & Loneliness
How Feeling Disconnected to Society Affects Those Who Served
BY CAROLYN S PETERSON
The decision to enter the armed forces for our country is one that is not made in haste or without understanding of the responsibilities and the consequences that could lie ahead. It is without a doubt, one of the greatest ways to support our country, yet when a veteran leaves active duty, they often feel disconnected and alone, because they do not fit into the new ‘normal’ they live in daily. Unfortunately, many fall through the cracks and rarely seek help for struggles leading to not only isolation, but depression and in some cases, suicide. Knowing how to meet veterans where they are and offer them the help they need to address their loneliness and other battles is a focus of mental health agencies today.
A BIGGER BATTLE AT HOME
The statistics are staggering when you read that as many as twenty veterans per day commit suicide. While mental health professionals have focused on depression, loneliness has long been ignored as a factor possibly leading to debilitating mental health issues.
A recent study by Yale University found that loneliness was a top predictor of depression and the development of suicidal thoughts, along with physical disability.
Understanding loneliness and the effects on not only mental health, but physical health as well, has long been studied. There is a clear connection between loneliness and the risk of high blood pressure, mental decline, depression, and early death. As humans, we want to belong and be part of something bigger than ourselves. Veterans have that sense of belonging when serving, but when their service comes to an end, the isolation often begins and they fall into a deep hole of how to connect outside of their military roles.
MILITARY VERSUS CIVILIAN LIFE
Disconnection
Loneliness has been described as ‘the discrepancy between the social relationships we have and the social relationships we wish to have.’ Think of times when you have been in a crowd, yet felt lonely. It’s no surprise that it can take time for a veteran to readjust to the civilian world.
Military men and women, when in service, have a strict and regimented schedule, and serve in a group or unit who have the same purpose.
But veterans, once in civilian life, report disconnection to their family, friends, and activities, a lack of structure and purpose, and little support from institutions.
When in the military, especially during deployment, a service person is placed in an environment where they are ‘issued’ colleagues, friends, as well as a social life with those whom you serve with, bonding through shared experiences. With the discipline in military life, things make sense, you have a hierarchy with rank and rules to help with understanding your place in the system. A lack of structure can lead to isolation and loneliness for veterans.
Relationships
For the relationships that veterans return home to, many of those do not survive reunification. Statistics show that enlisted first line military supervisors have the highest divorce rate of any profession for those under 30, with 30 percent of couples divorcing. Mental health professionals believe this may be due to service members having to become adjusted to a different structure of life and that may not be compatible with old relationships. As the divide between the veteran and their family and friends grows, so does loneliness.
FIGHTING THE ENEMY OF LONELINESS
Assimilation back into society for the veteran is not a light switch that can be flipped to ‘get back to normal.’ For the veteran, it is suggested that you be patient with yourself and be open to the possibilities that are out there for you. Start doing activities that make you feel more whole and help you integrate into the civilian world. Try activities that honor your service, like volunteering for veterans’ causes where your experience and knowledge is valued.
No matter what you are dealing with, connecting with people who share your struggles is always a positive. Research online groups that help veterans get involved in civilian life through addressing the challenges of depression, loneliness, or physical disabilities.
More than anything, again, take your time and be proud of your service and know that you are appreciated and supported in finding your own ‘new normal,’ so reach out and let others help you and thank you for all you’ve done and accomplished.

Conversations with Your BFF
Recently, my friend and I were cleaning out our individual homes, doing the purge pile, the donation pile, the ‘What was I thinking when I bought that?’ pile, and we both happened upon our wedding dresses. This discovery, for both of us, ground our cleanups to a halt and she called me and said, ‘What did you do with your wedding dress?’ I laughed and said, ‘You know, that’s a good question which I was going to ask you.’ After a bit of a discussion, said to her, ‘I am so glad you asked!’
NO ONE PLANS TO GET A DIVORCE
Not one second as walked down the aisle of my church on my wedding day did it cross my mind, ‘What if this doesn’t work out?’ I had no doubt this would be my lifetime partner, but well, that fell through some 20 years into my fairy tale and separation followed with divorce nipping at its heels. With almost 10 years of my divorce in the rear view mirror, I still have yet to deal with the tangible wedding memories like the professional photos, the VHS video tape, the scrapbook, and yes, the dress. Each item is shoved away somewhere in my house, but for some reason the dress is haunting me more so than the other things.
Over a year ago, I took my engagement ring and made a hell of a beautiful ring out of it and the memories of a failed marriage are no longer part of it. Instead, I see the ring on the hand of a woman who has been through some tough, sad, and disappointing times, filled with nights of tears, but she came out the other end happier, healthier, and so much stronger. So, what about that dress? Not like I can fashion that into a cocktail dress, nor would I want to. So what are my options?
FROM TRASHING IT, TO BURNING IT, TO DONATING IT
BY REBECCA COOPER
My friend didn’t ruminate on her dress like did. She put it in her car and took it to the dump, and another friend who we surveyed said that she burned hers. Not a tear was shed in either case I was told. But the lamenting romantic writer in me struggles with the outcome of mine.
I have been told that, if the divorce was amicable, which mine was for the most part, if you have a daughter, you can refashion your dress for her wedding day, as long as you don’t believe in bad karma associated with it. But there are also other options, too!
There are groups across the country that take old wedding dresses as donations and either give them to military brides who can not afford a dress or if the style isn’t too dated, you can also consign your dress. Either way, it gets the dress out of your sight and it will be used by someone who definitely needs it more than you do.
I think it is safe to say that my divorce is forever, so it is probably time to do something with that wedding dress and all the other stuff left behind. Truthfully, I still haven’t decided what to do with mine, but I am moving closer to making the decision, so in my book, that is a positive step forward.
