The Wedding Checklist

nce you’ve chosen the date, the following serves as a general guideline for all the to-do’s as you count down to your wedding day!

10 – 12 months from the date • Announce your engagement to your parents, family, and friends. Update your Facebook status to “Engaged.”

• Think about your overall theme – are you dreaming of a rustic, country-style wedding or a posh, sophisticated event?

Do you dream of a traditional ceremony or are you looking for outside-the-box wedding ideas?

• Start working on your guest list.

• Pick the time of day / night for the wedding.

• Secure a church and / or reception venue.

• Choose your bridal party.

• Determine your wedding budget.

• Hire a wedding planner.

• Make a list of vendors (florists, caterers, musicians, etc.) and begin scheduling appointments.

8 – 10 months from the date • Begin shopping for a wedding dress (be sure to budget for alterations and undergarments).

• Shop and select bridesmaid dresses.

• Sign contracts and make initial deposits to reserve vendors for the big day.

• Start thinking about a honeymoon destination and work on travel plans.

• Have engagement pictures taken.

4 – 7 months from the date • Send ‘save the date’ notices to let guests know the date, time, and location of the wedding.

• Begin planning the rehearsal dinner.

• Schedule appointments for haircuts, color, wedding-day styling, manicures, pedicures, massages, and other beauty treatments.

• Register for gifts.

• Coordinate wedding transportation.

• Select and order attire for the groom and groomsmen.

• Purchase the wedding rings.

• Reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for out of town guests.

• Buy wedding-party gifts.

• Decide on and order wedding favors.

2 – 3 months from the date • Discuss photography wants with the photographer.

• Discuss the menu with the caterer.

• Meet with your wedding officiate to discuss ceremony details.

• Write your vows, if you choose to write your own.

• Mail the wedding invitations.

• Apply for marriage license up to 60 days prior to the wedding date.

1 month from the date • Schedule a final gown fitting.

• Confirm that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have everything they need and are aware of the schedule of events.

• Confirm arrival and delivery times from all of your vendors.

• Have your wedding program printed.

• Create welcome bags for your out-of-town guests and have them delivered to the hotel.

• Write thank you notes as you receive gifts.

• Confirm attendance of guests who have not RSVP’d.

• Provide caterer with the final head count.

Day of the wedding • Relax and enjoy your special day!

• How many stories of mishaps (or worse) have you heard from brides after the wedding?

and your quote should be, too. Please, please, please ask the wedding consultant about their background! Notably, how many weddings they have handled, their education, certifications, association memberships and the like...it really makes a difference!

• Why take a chance at your wedding, which is one of the most important days of your life?

So, if you just want numbers:

• How many weddings have you planned?

• Day-of-event coordination is usually a flat fee between $500 - $2,000

What about the cost? Some planners will provide you with a custom quote based on the specific items you need - don’t be afraid to ask questions as every wedding is unique

• Full service usually costs between 10% - 20% of your total budget

Remember these points to ponder when you’re considering the cost of a planner.

Creating a Realistic Wedding Budget

nless money is no object, every couple should have a budget for their wedding and stick to it. It is very easy to get caught up in the planning and find that you have exceeded your limit, with many items still to go. According to the experts, here is a basic breakdown of what you can expect to pay for each component:

• Reception: 48%-50% • Ceremony: 2%-3% • Attire: 8%-10% • Flowers: 8%-10% • Entertainment/Music: 8%-10% • Photography/Videography: 10%-12% • Stationery: 2%-3% • Wedding Rings: 2%-3% • Parking/Transportation: 2%-3%

• Gifts: 2%-3% • Miscellaneous: 8% • Just in case (to relieve the stress of the unexpected): 5% *If you are responsible for the honeymoon, your budget will need to be adjusted to include this expense.

Of course, these are just averages.

Adjustments will need to be made if your actual costs in any category exceed the percentages. In other words, if your overall budget is $20,000 and the reception costs are $12,000, you will need to reduce your spending on something else. It is important to keep an accurate cost sheet of each expenditure so you can make sure the only things you stress about on your big day are the small things.

Bridal Shower Etiquette

By Meghan Corbett tiquette is a funny thing. Some people have absolutely no idea how things “should” be done, but the real question is, who came up with these standards anyway? While some lines have blurred through the years, some elements of proper etiquette have remained constant. Below are a few of the “musts” to avoid a slap on the wrist from Ms. Manners:

• Every person on the shower guest list should also be on the wedding guest list.

• Invitations should be mailed 4-6 weeks before the shower.

• The mothers of the bride and groom should not host the shower. Sisters of the bride and groom can host as long as they are part of the wedding party.

• The bride should have registered for gifts by the time guests receive shower invitations, and registry information can be printed on or included with the invitation.

• There should be some type of entertainment, food and beverages. Food and beverages should be appropriate for the time of day the shower takes place. Entertainment should be taste appropriate for the guests in attendance.

Skin Care the Month Before the Wedding

he most important thing to remember is do not do anything new the month before the wedding.

T

If you have never had a facial, do not get one right before you walk down the aisle.

If you have never had a spray tan, do not get your very first one the week of the wedding. If you have always wanted to try a certain brand of make-up or facial cleanser, wait until after your wedding day to try it for the first time. This is true for just about any element of skin care and/or tanning you can think of doing to prepare for the big day.

Think of it like cleaning your house.

When using a new cleaner, you are always supposed to “test it” on a small, hidden area of whatever you are cleaning to make sure it doesn’t stain or cause discoloration.

You are under so much stress the month before the big day, there is no guarantee your skin will react positively to new treatment.

The best advice is to always practice a healthy skincare routine. Always remove make-up before going to bed, moisturize your skin daily and make sure to use sunscreen or lotion with SPF before spending time outdoors.

Setting the Stage With the Perfect Invitation

By Meghan Corbett edding invitations can be extremely complicated. They can also be very expensive. Hopefully, you have plenty of time to get all of your invitation ducks in a row as it can take time to find the right invitation for your wedding. Consider the following factors:

• Wedding colors.

• Size and shape of invitations (don’t forget about added mailing costs).

• What information must be included on invitation?

• Shop around for professionals who can address your envelopes/print your RSVP envelopes.

• Don’t just double check – triple and quadruple check EVERYTHING! • Weigh and stamp at least one completed invitation at the post office to make sure you buy the right stamps the first time.

If you purchase your invitations at a stationery shop or place that specializes in invitations, they can help with all the details. Make sure you are aware that your invitations can drastically vary in price based on the features you select.

For example, added cost will accompany heavier cardstock, square-shaped envelopes, engraving and professional calligraphy.

Try establishing a budget per invite beforehand, so you won’t get your heart set on a format that is out of your price range.

Postage Pitfalls

hen you choose your invitations, there are lots of things to consider, but one aspect you may not think about is postage.

Here are some postage pitfalls to avoid:

W

• Odd shapes, such as square or vertically addressed envelopes, are subject to a 21 cent non-machine surcharge.

• Embellishments, like jewels, that prevent an envelope from lying flat, may mean the envelope cannot be machine processed. In addition to the extra cost, the post office will stamp “non-machinable” on the outside.

• Post card style response cards are cheaper because they can be sent with a 34 cent stamp, but must meet the minimum of 3.5 x 5.5 inches.

• For heavier envelopes, you can purchase two 49 cent stamps, but post offices actually carry a 70 cent wedding stamp - just request it.

• Account for the weight of any ribbon, embellishments, response cards, maps for out of town guests, or gift registry cards you intend to include. If it weighs over an ounce, it’s subject to additional mailing charges.

Remember, you can always stop by your local post office and have a sample envelope weighed so that you can calculate your total cost and avoid these postage pitfalls.

Consider the following for each of the seasons: • Autumn/Winter Chrysanthemums (pompom or button), carnations, dahlias and daisies are the most reasonably priced flowers at this time of year.

Although higher-priced, consider flowers such as hydrangeas which have larger blooms so not as many are needed. Also consider using seasonal berries, greenery and fruits.

• Spring/Summer Most everything is available, but certain flowers will always be pricier. At the lower end of the cost spectrum, consider daisies, carnations, daffodils, gladiolas, sunflowers, tulips, spray roses and irises.

• If cost is not an issue, other popular wedding flowers include roses, orchids, calla lilies, peonies and gardenias.

• Your florist can offer suggestions and options to keep the cost down without losing your vision.

he wedding cake is often the centerpiece of the wedding and one of the most talked about part of the reception afterwards. Everyone loves a great wedding cake! But did you know that there is a ton of tradition and history baked into it?

Why do the bride and groom feed each other cake? It’s meant to symbolize their commitment to provide for one another.

What do all the layers of a wedding cake mean? For most modern day couples, those layers usually boil down to personal preference and style, but traditionally, the top layer represented the couple. The bottom layer represented their new family, and the 46

middle tiers represented the number of children the couple hoped to have.

What is a groom’s cake? The groom’s cake is largely a Southern tradition and is generally designed according to the groom’s hobby or interest. It is usually served at the rehearsal dinner.

Are we really supposed to eat year-old cake on our first anniversary? Well, if you freeze it correctly – it will be fine. Eating the top layer on your anniversary is a great way to remember your special day! However, in Britain, the first layer is saved for the first child’s christening!

• The ideal solution is to let your attendants choose a style that suits them personally – but all from the same color and fabric. Or follow trend with an ombre effect – wearing varying shades of the same color.

• After meeting your bridesmaids, the bridal salon experts can offer color and fabric options that would enhance the group as a whole.

• Give your girls even a bit more leeway and have them choose different gowns, but all from the same designer so there is still some uniformity.

Alternatives to Cocktails

any couples choose to refrain from beverages containing hard liquor at their receptions due to cost, religious beliefs, venue restrictions, etc. Regardless of your reason, there are some great alternatives to cocktails that will satisfy your guests and eliminate the concern that can arise when alcohol is involved. Below are some great recipes for yummy non-alcoholic cocktails to serve during cocktail hour or throughout the reception.

Mint Lemonade/Limeade Ingredients: 1/2 cup sugar, 4 1/2 cups water, 3 1/3 cups fresh lemon or lime juice (about 8 lemons or limes), 1/4 cup chopped mint Directions: Combine sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring 64

until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and cool. In a 2 1/2-quart pitcher, stir remaining 4 cups water, syrup, lemon or lime juice and mint. Refrigerate.

Blueberry Pomegranate Bellini Ingredients: 1/3 cup pomegranate juice, 1/2 cup all-natural blueberry jam, 1 bottle non-alcoholic champagne or sparkling cider Directions: Heat pomegranate juice until hot but not boiling. Add jam and whisk until smooth.

Remove from heat and strain mixture over a pitcher. Let syrup stand until completely cooled. Refrigerate until ready to use. To serve, pour two to three teaspoons of the syrup into champagne flutes and top with non-alcoholic champagne or sparkling cider. Serve immediately.

re you taking one last look at the wedding budget? Did you forget anything? Look again!

• Hair dressers and make-up artists are usually tipped at the same level as if at their salons – 15 to 20%.

One important item that can easily be overlooked in the planning process is planning the tips for those working with you to create your dream wedding.

• Delivery and set-up staff: $5 to $10 per person.

Below are some suggestions, but they are not all-inclusive by any means. As you make decisions on who and how much to tip, keep in mind that the purpose of tipping is to acknowledge superior service.

• As a first step, check all your contracts to confirm whether a gratuity has already been included.

• Musicians: $15 to $20 per person.

• Driver: If not part of the contract, usually 15 to 20% of total.

• Business owners are not generally tipped.
