WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Professionally, passing bar exams in 2 states within 2 years was a proud achievement. But I’m actually most proud of making the decision later to leave my law practice to strike out as an entrepreneur in direct sales. Leaving a “regular” job to work with a new, unproven company was a bold choice that has paid off in all aspects of my life. In my personal life, raising my 2 sons to be kind, confident, generous kids is my proudest achievement, and it is definitely a work in progress!

This is one of my favorite quotes. The month of November always has me thinking about gratitude a little more than usual. I believe that it’s nearly impossible to be grateful and sad at the same time. What are you grateful for? Do me a favor and think of three quick things. I have a feeling it will boost your mood even if just a little bit.

One of my very best friends got married on October 9th! (Congrats Kara and Harry!) Crazily, THREE of my closest friends have gotten married within the last twelve months. I’m grateful to have been a part of each of their special days. And speaking of weddings, our Fall | Winter 2021-22 issue of FW Engaged is on stands now! If you or someone you know is getting married, be sure to pick up a copy.

This issue is one I’ve been (not so patiently) waiting for. Jodie Brim is a shining beam of light, and I am blessed to know her. The second you meet her, you’ll immediately know that you won’t forget her.

Simply being in the same room as this woman feels good for my soul. Read more about Jodie Brim and her team on page 60.

Why the Alzheimer’s Association? You may or may not have had the pleasure of knowing Kelly Groce (my papaw, Keela’s dad). He was Forsyth Woman’s #1 fan and delivered magazines for us for many years. He passed away in 2019. While he was never officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, we knew something wasn’t quite right for a couple of years before he passed.

If you or someone you know has had dementia or Alzheimer’s, you know what we’re talking about.

It’s a scary and humbling experience for both the person experiencing the memory loss as well as family and other caregivers.

We miss him so much and since he couldn’t be with us to celebrate 16 years, we wanted to raise money to honor his memory (sorry about that unintentional pun, Pawpaw) and help those who currently are— or will— suffer from this terrible disease. We have set a lofty goal of raising $16,000 for this cause that is near and dear to us and we’re well on our way!

Some guys buy red corvettes when they reach a certain age, others might get a tattoo or grow a beard. Not Brent Peters.

Instead, Brent started making chocolate!

Started in 2007, Black Mountain Chocolate was the first bean-to-bar Chocolate Factory in the Tarheel state. Since then they have been producing fair-trade chocolate, created from the cocoa bean in small batches at their Visible Factory.

Black Mountain Chocolate’s first factory was founded in the town of Black Mountain and then moved to the Arts District in WinstonSalem in 2014. Although they enjoyed the Trade Street location, there were big plans underway for Black Mountain Chocolate and a move to downtown’s beloved Bailey Party was just the ticket! (dare I say… “golden ticket” ?) Black Mountain Chocolate is now open and significantly expanded at 450 N Patterson Avenue, just under the iconic smoke stacks of Bailey Park and inside the Coal Pit alongside Incendiary Brewing and Cugino Forno.

Every Saturday afternoon, guests to Black Mountain Chocolate can delight in The Makery, a drop in area where visitors are taken through the process of chocolate making, get to view live demos, and even sample BMC chocolate. It’s an edutainment experience that brings a new level of enjoyment to visiting the Chocolate Bar. Seems like choosing chocolate over a shiny sports car was the right choice for Brent and Millie! Roasted Cocoa Beans from Black

Mountain Chocolate are now being used by every major brewery in the area such as Foothills, Fiddlin’ Fish, Hoots, Incendiary and Radar.

Plans for the future include a new website and virtual, self-guided tours of Black Mountain’s Chocolate Factory.

Cheesy Ground Beef & Veggie Hotdish Servings: 6 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Total time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb. ground beef, or ground bison • 1 cup corn, frozen or fresh • 2 large tomatoes, chopped • 1 large broccoli floret, chopped • 5-6 rainbow fingerling potatoes, thinly sliced • 1 cup whole milk • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 4 tbsp. olive oil • 2 tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped • 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1/2 tsp. black pepper INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 425F. 2. In a large skillet over medium high heat, add in 1 tbsp. olive oil to heat up for 1 minute.

3. Add in the ground beef, corn, chopped broccoli, and salt to sauté for 8-10 minutes.

4. Transfer the mixture to a 9” x 9” casserole dish. Add a layer of chopped tomatoes.

5. In a saucepan over medium high heat, add the remaining olive oil. Stir in the flour, then pour in the milk. Whisk until smooth, and there aren’t any more lumps. Mix in the shredded cheese, black pepper, Dijon mustard, and chopped parsley.

6. Pour the cheese mixture over the beef mixture.

7. Top with a single layer of thinly sliced potatoes.

8. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Let cool 8-10 minutes, then enjoy warm!

Keeping It Real RESUSCITATING OUR DREAMS

It was a brand-new day with endless possibilities. I remember like it was yesterday.

I tried convincing Mama for weeks that I was old enough to wear makeup. I was, after all, a sixth grader—time to “level up”! Besides, everyone else was doing it.

(Remember that argument, the one that comes back to bite us, moms?)

Despite my compelling case, Mama said, “No. The time will come soon enough.

No need to rush things.” (Your mom, too, huh?) I soon realized she wasn’t budging. I had to take matters into my own hands.

That morning, Mama left for work ten minutes before I had to be at the bus stop. Finally, my chance!

I raced to her makeup drawer and surveyed the dazzling treasure. So many possibilities, so little time. I grabbed the powder…or blush…or…I’m not really sure what it was. I just stroked my face as fast as that brush could fly. The mirror told me I finally looked like middle-school material.

It was about time!

I rushed to the bus stop with newfound sassiness. As I arrived, my friends noticed. (I knew they would!)

Surely, my transformation dazzled them, too.

The cool eighth grader took a second look.

Can you believe it? I surely blushed. His reaction forever lives in my memory. He smiled and sighed, “Tangerine face!” Everyone broke into laughter, and my newfound confidence shattered. As we trekked to school, my hot tears erased the "tangerine." Talk about a devastating morning!

The funny thing about childhood, though, is that our stumbling does not paralyze us, for the most part. Children unknowingly bask in the gift of resilience. They get knocked down but almost instinctively get back up. They just keep going! It’s what they do!

The next morning, I decided to avoid that alluring treasure. Oh, I still experimented, just not two minutes before the bus stop.

I learned from my mistakes. The misstep didn’t stop me. It served as an invaluable experience to help me get it right next time.

What happened to us? We were once little people with big dreams and irrepressible spirits. We fell down, but we never stayed down. We rose from the ashes, dusted off our bruised selves, and kept going.

Somehow along the way, though, we stopped getting up. We became paralyzed by the fear of stumbling, so we just stopped pursuing our aspirations altogether. What a tragedy! It’s like adulthood has become the place where dreams come to die.

What are your dreams? Has it been so long since you dreamed that you no longer remember? Maybe you have forgotten the deepest ambitions of your heart, but I promise, God hasn’t. Did you know He’s the designer of dreams? You’re here because He dreamed you. He imagined you, and He loved what He imagined.

Oh, I pray this Truth settles in your heart. This Designer of Dreams is actually the One who embedded dreams in your heart. Now, some of your dreams may not have been His plan for you. They did not bear His fingerprint.

But others of them? They certainly do. Those hopes and dreams you’ve aborted? God didn’t abandon them; you did. (I did.)

Isn’t it time we resurrect some of those buried dreams? Sure, you may falter at first, but who doesn’t? Stop fearing the repercussions of stumbling more than you believe in the Designer of your dream. Use the staggering as fuel to propel you forward.

Why don’t you excavate the hopes God embedded within you? Dig up those goals from the graveyards of your life. Dust them off. Offer them back to the Dream Weaver, and then…get going! You have it in you!

for Facial Plastic Surgery Lifting Spirits!

The eventual loosening of skin is inevitable with age, but key factors such as genetics, sun exposure, stress and diet can definitely accelerate the process. A face lift is designed to remove excess skin and fat, while repositioning the skin, muscle and deeper tissues.

Of course with work schedules ever changing, patients are interested in minimizing downtime even more, and often ask about a mini-lift or a weekend face lift.

BEFORE Once upon a time it was only when we glanced in a shopping mirror – now it’s a Zoom meeting or a FaceTime chat that brings what we each label our “problem areas” to light!

With more people working from home the last year or two, the “sightings” are even greater, as we see ourselves in a variety of lighting – some flattering and some, not so much!

You might not have expected facial procedures to be so popular during pandemic times, but as practices reopened, surgeons – including Dr. Neal Goldman of the Goldman Center for Facial Plastic Surgery – are seeing a renewed interest in neck lifts. Obviously, recovery time was a prime reason for the rush – as anyone working from home has had the luxury of more private recovery time. Wearing a face mask due to Covid has also proven an excellent way to cover any bruises as your face heals!

With so much time focused on the face, the eyes and neck area are coming more into focus. For most people, those are the key areas they’d most like to improve.

“I’ve been taking care of aging faces in Winston-Salem since 1999,” says Dr. Goldman. “People always ask if a face lift or neck lift is the only answer for lifting jowls.”

AFTER If you’re wondering about the term “jowls” here’s the scoop. “As we age, the soft tissue and skin of the lower face begin to descend. Fillers are temporary treatments that can work for early signs of jowling, but the most fool-proof method – a lower facelift with an experienced surgeon – really provides the best and most long-lasting results,” Dr. Goldman explains.

He and his staff use computer imaging to project the patient’s face and neck area from all angles, and then address – as honestly as possible – any potential limitations. Their goal is to give patients a clear view of what they can realistically expect.

“Most of the center’s face lift patients are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, but many people begin to examine their necks while still in their 40s,” says Dr. Goldman. “It is not about the patient’s age, but rather about his or her overall health and outlook on life that makes for a good candidate.”

Ever considered adding Kansas to your vacation destination bucket list?

Here’s how to spend seven days in the Sunflower State.

Day 1: Topeka, KS

Since Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is counterintuitively in Missouri, pick-up your one-way rental car after getting off the plane and drive an hour west to Topeka, the capital city of Kansas. After checking in to your hotel, spend your first day in Kansas exploring Topeka, making sure to check out tourist hotspots such as the Evel Knievel Museum and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. If you get hungry, cross the Kansas River and stuff yourself with comfort food at The Wheel Barrel restaurant. Order its award-winning Monte Cristo sandwich and a craft beer before devouring a dessert soft pretzel to cleanse your palette.

Day 2: Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

An hour and 15 minutes southwest of Topeka sits Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, with 11,000 acres of protected prairie lands with hiking trails, guided tours, and catch-and-release fishing. Surprisingly, Tallgrass Prairie is only four percent of its former 170 million-acre self, most of which has been transformed into farmland. Visitors luckily don’t need a permit to access the 40 miles of hiking trails and explore the preserve. Keep your eyes peeled for bison while hiking, and be sure to keep a safe distance if one crosses your path.

Day 3: Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery

On your third day in Kansas, drive southeast to relax and unwind at the beautiful Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery in Paola, KS. As the largest vineyard in Kansas, Somerset Ridge is home to over 9,000 vines, as well as the award-winning Lucky Dog hard cider. Note: If you visit www.somersetridge. com before you head west, you can book a $10 reservation ahead of time, which includes seating and your first beverage. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, many visitors enjoy a picnic on the vineyard grounds (although no outside food is permitted on weekends). Snack on charcuterie, participate in a wine tasting, or check the online calendar of events for information on live music and food truck schedules.

Day 4: Atchison and Aviation Less than an hour northeast of Topeka is the smaller town of Atchison, KS. In Atchison, tour the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum to learn more about Amelia Earhart’s life before her mysterious disappearance during a flight at age 39. If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air, take a walk along the Atchison Riverwalk, following the Missouri River before making the drive back to Topeka.

Day 5: Wichita, KS Check out of your hotel in Topeka and drive a little over two hours south to the city of Wichita. Downtown Wichita is packed with family-friendly tourist attractions. Take the family to the Old Cowtown Museum, the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, and the Exploration Place, a science museum for kids and adults alike. Where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers meet stands the 44-foot tall Keeper of the Plains statue, which was donated to Wichita by Native American artist Blackbear Bosin in 1974.

Day 6: Fort Larned National Historic Site If you haven’t had your fill of historical sightseeing for the week, drive two hours east to Fort Larned National Historic Site, an army post from the 1860s and 1870s open to the public for annual living history events, ranger-guided tours, and picnics. Established in 1859, Fort Larned was originally created to protect Santa Fe Trail traffic from less than friendly American Indians, and became a staple for American and Native American history. Visible at Fort Larned are ruts along the Santa Fe Trail, which serve as reminders of the hundreds of wagons passing through the famous Southwest trade route.

Day 7: Depart Wichita After a week of history, wine, and prairie land, return your one-way rental car at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT). If you have an extra hour or two before boarding your flight, grab a beer with breakfast at the airport’s River City Brewing restaurant while you plan your next adventure.

Get Thyself a Dog Already!

I am a crazy-ass animal lover. And, in my experience, we get far more than we give when we welcome an animal into our life. In fact, there is quite a bit of science-based and anecdotal evidence that suggests getting a dog - or another pet - after the age of 50 or 60 is a grand idea.

Seniors also report that their pets provide a welcome distraction from pain which, for some, is another type of “constant companion.” And, another study reported that a pet owner who looks into their pet’s eyes for at least five minutes can experience a release of the “feel-good” hormone, oxytocin. Ah, yes!

But above all else, the best reason for getting a pet is the incomparable, steady companionship they provide. Some call it “unconditional love” another term for “priceless.”

EXERCISE AND DIET

Okay, so on a more personal level, here are a few more very good reasons to have a pet:

First, there is the research: the Mayo Clinic found that dog owners are more likely to exercise and eat well, resulting in better cardiovascular health than those without a canine companion.

MORE LOVE, LESS STRESS And speaking of companionship, a recent National Poll on Healthy Aging revealed that 88% of people who owned a pet (not a dog, per se) said that their pet helped them enjoy life, while 86% said that their pet helped them feel loved. Yes, loved. Similarly, 79% reported experiencing less stress because they share their life with a pet.

These findings may confirm what you already intuitively know, or they may provide further incentive to consider bringing a pet into your life. Given that more than 40% of seniors experience chronic loneliness, having a pet to love and to care for is worth exploring.

PURPOSE Having a pet to love and care for gives many seniors a sense of purpose. With feeding, walking, grooming, and staying on top of vet visits and possibly meds, seniors have something to focus on, keeping their “cognitive muscles” engaged.

ROUTINE Along with all of that comes another benefit: a routine. Anyone who’s ever had a dog can attest to how their animal’s “paw watch” keeps track of time better than any other device, hands-down. If you are a reluctant daily walker, Fido can help for sure!

MEET AND GREET Dogs, in particular, support social engagement.

With Fido prancing on his lead, he’s the icebreaker that even a shy or reserved senior can count on.

And, with the need to get him outdoors part of the daily routine, repeated opportunities to engage with others emerge.

Concerned about your ability to care for a pet?

Are unsure about the long -term expense?

Don’t want to experience grief should they pass on?

That’s understandable. So, take it slowly, and consider the following next steps: • talk to seniors like yourself who have pets and ask them about the pros and cons • offer to dog-walk or pet sit to get a sense of what spending time with a pet is like • volunteer at a shelter or rescue… but beware because you may just experience love at first sight!

Although the concept of painting furniture might sound simple at first, the process takes much more preparation and precision than one would initially expect. After teaching classes in a small studio prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Renee asked her to teach monthly furniture painting classes upstairs at The Barn.

For many, furniture painting is a way to relax while being resourceful with old furniture.

Debbie has a keen eye for determining which of her students need a little extra advice during the painting process, and which students prefer to paint solitarily and get “into the zone” during the class.

In the future, Debbie and Renee hope to host “lunch and learn” cabinet painting classes, in addition to monthly furniture painting classes.

Dr. Leslee Battle, An Intentional Leader

The creation of an intentional leader can start with a simple decision made as a teenager. Dr. Leslee Battle, Interim Dean for the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), made the choice as a senior in high school to attend WSSU, partly because of the nursing program and partly because her mother wanted her closer to Lenoir, North Carolina, her hometown.

This simple, commonsense decision started Dr. Battle on a leadership journey that currently affords her the opportunity to lead over 1,500 graduate and undergraduate health sciences students, along with faculty and staff, on their individual paths to improve the health of the citizens in our North Carolina communities.

These WSSU healthcare graduates “Enter to learn and depart to serve” and will make immeasurable contributions to the health and well-being of thousands of lives. Harnessing and growing this type of positive potential requires a strong, intentional leader. Dr. Battle has prepared for this challenging role since high school!

Not many high schoolers in Lenoir, NC, thought about college. Furniture factories were the main employer when Dr. Battle was in school. But she had intentional family members who took her to college football games and tailgating and on visits to college campuses, providing exposure to what college could feel like besides sitting in a classroom from 9:00-5:00. Sometimes all it takes is a little glimpse of what could be! While at WSSU as an undergraduate student, Dr. Battle majored in nursing and joined the Army Reserves, another intentional decision that prepared her for the current role as Interim Dean. After

graduation, she stayed in Winston-Salem and worked at Forsyth Medical Center (FMC), initially as a staff nurse and charge nurse. Within only five years, she moved into leadership positions, including care coordinator, head nurse, and nurse educator. She cultivated her leadership skills in the Army Reserves and at the FMC. It did not take long for her talents to get noticed by administrators at WSSU, and she was recruited to join the faculty as a part-time clinical instructor. She joined the faculty to teach full-time in the nursing program while staying part-time at Forsyth and while continuing her education and raising a family. After 22 years at FMC, Dr. Battle transitioned solely to WSSU after earning tenure status.

The leadership skills gained in the Reserves and as a nurse supervisor come in handy as Dr. Battle continues to lead several different academic healthcare disciplines through a global pandemic, hiring freezes, budget cuts, and an about-face from in-person to virtual teaching.

The programs she oversees are educating the frontline healthcare workers who have been battling the Covid pandemic since March 2019. Who better to lead healthcare education during a pandemic than a militarytrained leader?! During her tenure as interim dean, Dr. Battle has worked toward revitalizing communityengaged healthcare services that were limited by the pandemic and is focusing on the transition from a “School of Health Sciences” to a “College of Health Sciences.” Envisioning a restructured school requires creativity, innovation, and trust in strategic planning.

She has arrived on her leadership journey exactly where she is needed, whether she intended to or not.

As a Winston-Salem resident and WSSU administrator, Dr. Battle is aware of community partners who can assist WSSU in improving the health of our region and is cultivating collaborations that improve student resources and support local community needs near the WSSU campus. She strives to bring attention to the disparity in resources available to HBCUs when compared to other regional institutions and is working hard to close the gap. But it takes a community and a society to recognize the inequity and work together to ensure all students at any school receive the education they deserve. With leaders like Dr. Battle at WSSU, this means that our local healthcare systems can hire the healthcare professionals that they deserve and provide the quality care that you deserve. Good intentions make good decisions!

HOST A PIE SWAP

JOIN A TURKEY TROT

Did you know the synonym for “November” is “pie season?” Okay, so maybe that’s not true. But it is the perfect month to host a pie swap with family and friends! It’s much like a cookie swap. Invite some pie-loving friends over to have a taste of each one’s homemade pie, along with enough recipe cards to share your seasonal delights.

Walk, run, or a little bit of both. You don’t want to miss out on this favorite, seasonal run. If there is no Thanksgiving race near you, try keeping the tradition by grabbing a few friends and family to run at a local park or in the neighborhood early that morning. And don’t forget to treat yourself to a big slice of creamy pumpkin pie later!

HOLIDAY MOVIE MARATHON

START A JOURNAL

It’s never too early to bring out the nostalgic holiday movies that you’ve been watching since you were a child, and maybe even throw in a few new ones! Invite your friends and/or family over to make hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn for a cozy night in with the classics.

Spending 10 to 15 minutes to write down your thoughts, goals, feelings, or observations is perfect for both a relaxed rainy evening and a productive morning. Journaling may help you control fears, concerns, and problems you may be facing, as well as improve your mood. Whether it be one simple sentence describing how you feel or a mindful self-reflection after an exhausting day of work, this day-today writing is an opportunity for positive self-talk and identifying any negative thoughts.

CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET Feeling confident and put together can make or break your attitude for the day, which all begins in one place - your closet. The goal of any closet clean-out is to create the right foundation for your style that concentrates on finding pieces that fit your body with the right balance of color to inspire you.

A few questions to ask yourself as you try on each piece: 1. Does this fit me?

2. Is this an essential piece?

3. Have I worn it in the last six months?

TIS’ THE FESTIVE CHEESE BALL Last month, we threw on our overalls and headed to the pumpkin patches. But this time, we’re staying inside the kitchen to see who can make the most festive fall-inspired cheese ball. Start off with the cheese base of 16 oz cream cheese, 2 cups freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese, 2 chopped green onions, 1 tsp. hot sauce, 1 tsp.

Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 tsp. garlic powder. Lightly grease your hands to form the mixture into 2 cheese balls (set aside in the fridge in cling wrap until ready to use). A few ideas to give you a heads up are to use crushed pecans and pretzels for a turkey or crushed nachoflavored chips with a bell pepper stem for a pumpkin. Once you have your design, scoop onto plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least one hour before serving with your favorite crackers.

And just like that, you’re on your way to a healthier and happier you this autumn season!

This month’s featured artist, Carolina Corona, transforms colorful acrylics and watercolors into mindful representations of how she sees beauty in the natural world with all of its elements. She shares her desire to spread awareness of Earth’s resilience and power while encouraging others to protect and appreciate it.

Carolina Corona | Owner of Corona Fine Art, Painter, and Art Instructor How would you describe your work?

I am constantly inspired by nature, and my work reflects the beauty of my surroundings. My work also embraces the concept of women in nature and discusses freedom through the natural. In addition, my paintings depict images from my travels in detailed and colorful acrylic and watercolor strokes. I enjoy exploring nature and combining rich color with variety in line and shape to depict the immense diversity in the natural world.

What influences your art most?

My work is influenced by nature most of all. My desire is to bring awareness to the diversity of the Earth and spread an environmentalist message. Nature’s beauty is my daily inspiration. I am in awe of the Earth’s resilience and power. People and culture also inspire me. I’ve done commissioned portraits of locals and also of my family.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

My art has allowed me to grow in many ways, continuing my education about the world around me. Studying nature’s wonders and developing a deeper connection with the Earth has allowed me to find peace in the most turbulent of times.

My passion for art and the environment has also inspired me to do pro-bono work with multiple local organizations. Through this work, I’ve met people with similar goals to mine, and I have learned from their experiences. Teaching one-on-one art lessons has allowed me to meet new people from different backgrounds than mine. Even though we’re different, we’re connected by one similar goal: Art.

You are a big advocate for practicing mindfulness as a form of art and self-care. Can you tell us a little more about that?

I recently hosted a mindful collage workshop at the Stokes County Mental Health Association. The purpose of this workshop was to help individuals connect with their inner wisdom and get to know themselves better through intuitive art making, without any art experience. I also post nature journaling videos on my youtube channel, Corona Fine Art, with tips on how to use this as a tool for relaxation and self-care. I will be continuing to do workshops like this because I want others to be more in touch with their creativity, to practice mindfulness, and to develop a deeper connection to the Earth.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

Before starting my own business and dedicating more of my time to making art, I wasn’t able to fully exercise my creativity because I was spending all of my time on my previous job. When I started my art business, I was able to be creative every day and continue learning new things. Nowadays, I have time to be creative and make art every day.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I am always working on sharing my art with others. I offer my original and archival products through my online shop, scheduled studio visits, instructional videos, in-person one-on-one lessons, group workshops, cataloging of art collections, mindful art workshops, and much more. I want to provide the community with opportunities to be engaged in the arts without feeling pressure to create a “beautiful” piece of art or feeling fear of failure. There is always something new for me to learn and explore, new people for me to meet and get to know, and that is what excites me the most!

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

My advice to fellow artists, especially the ones just starting out, is don’t give up; everything is possible with hard work, perseverance, and resourcefulness. If art is what you want to do, you need to find time to create and express yourself regardless of what others say.

Some say nursing is a calling. It can be a demanding, thankless job in some ways and the feeling of being “called” to serve as a caregiver keeps many nurses going after a particularly hard day. For me, I do believe it’s a calling. It must be! As a nurse myself, I have seen how many moments we spend in a day on back-breaking, dreadful tasks that would make anyone else throw up their hands in defeat. But not a nurse. The nurse will return the next day and the next day…for three or four - 12 hour shifts in a week….to do it all again. Because this is just what nurses do….AND because there are other moments in between that make the most difficult ones worthwhile.

The quiet moments. The moments where we know we are making a difference in a life, in a family. Sometimes those are harder to find than they should be.

You may have your own image of a nurse…dressed all in white with a tidy white cap on her head. But nursing is much more than that. There are many more possibilities for a nurse nowadays. With the field constantly evolving, there are many different opportunities for a skilled nurse with a degree. The demand for nurses is continually growing, and the nursing career path offers valuable benefits such as a competitive salary, varied opportunities, the ability to travel, education reimbursement…among many others.

There are currently more than 3.8 million registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. Of all licensed RNs, 84.5% are employed in nursing. The federal government projected that more than 200,000 new registered nurse positions will be created each year from 2016-2026. So despite the large numbers of RNs currently working, a nursing shortage still exists, and experts expect it to worsen as millions of baby boomers age.

Nurses are not just working in the hospital! They can be found in your doctor’s office, your children’s schools, your local drug store clinic, and at the local college, teaching a new class of aspiring nurses.

Even in the hospitals, nurses have various roles from Bedside Nurses to Case Managers, Infection Control Nurses, Diabetes Experts, Cardiac Nurses, Nurse Midwives, Oncology Nurses, Clinical Nurse Managers,

CRNAs, Nurse Practitioners, Travel Nurses, Psychiatric Nurses, Nursing Directors, and many more! The faces of nurses are everywhere, and the opportunities for nurses are vast!

What’s changed for nurses?

On the plus side, the opportunities are more plentiful and varied and the pay has definitely improved! In the early days of “trained” nursing, around the mid-1880s, 22 nurse-training schools had been established in the United States, which followed Florence Nightingale’s principles.

Graduates could expect to earn about $4 a week, plus room, board, and tips. However, the profession still lacked prestige because, like domestic servants, nurses had to be on call 24 hours a day.

Some of the not-so-great changes to the nursing profession include sicker patients who need a higher level of care, shorter hospitalizations, and shorter training periods for new nurses. Add to this the nursing shortage and the recent pandemic, and you have a lot of overworked, exhausted nurses who are questioning their career choice. We can only hope the good ones hang in there! The best-case scenario would see them being rewarded for their efforts and changes being made to help make their workload more manageable. I’m not sure if or when we will get there, but it’s a dream all nurses have.

In the meantime, if you happen to know or care about a nurse, make it a point to let them know you see what they’re doing and you appreciate it, that you admire them, that you love them….whatever the case may be.

You can’t imagine how much of a difference this can make in the life of a burnt-out, exhausted nurse. To the person who will drop everything to care for you and your loved ones…let them know you care about them, too. And if you are a nurse, always remember this….

Planning for a Year of Beauty and Wellness in 2022

It’s November so there’s a high probability you’re in super planning mode trying to get ready for the holidays, New Year’s and beyond. Right? And that’s great. Because right now is really the perfect time to start planning – and scheduling for – a year of beauty and wellness in 2022. We asked the five boardcertified plastic surgeons, medical aestheticians and a Patient Care Coordinator at Forsyth Plastic Surgery and The VISTA at Forsyth Plastic Surgery for their help with planning – and here’s what they had to say.

NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2021

Checklist:  If you’ve never been to a plastic surgery practice like Forsyth Plastic Surgery, first things first: schedule an initial consultation. Haiden Gilley: “Our office has an entire team of Patient Care Coordinators to help with this so you can call OR (and this is new) simply schedule an appointment online on our website: forsythplasticsurgery.com.

We can answer questions and get you started.”  If you’re an established patient, schedule all of your recurring appointments for the entire year. This will help you plan and budget for your beauty appointments, and help maintain your look. For example: o Schedule four Botox appointments (Botox generally lasts about three to four months or slightly longer). So call and book appointments, say for example, for January, April, July and October. Dr. George Lawson III: “Take note of how many units of Botox you’re receiving during your treatment (our nurses record this as well). While every patient is different, in general you may want around 20 units for frown lines, 20 units for crow’s feet and about 20 units for forehead lines. This can help you maintain that nice, smooth look all year round.” o Schedule any other regular injectable appointments like Juvéderm brand products.

For example if you know you like to get a Juvéderm Voluma chin injection every year in April, go ahead and schedule that now.  If you’re planning a cosmetic surgery in 2022, figure out what might be a good time for you to have a relaxed and stress-free recovery period.

Then go ahead and make your consultation well in advance of that so you can plan, get your financing in place if necessary and get ready! Dr. John A. Fagg: “Many patients tell us after their final post-surgery check, ‘I wish I had done this sooner.’ So we’re always happy when a patient is ready to come in for a consultation. We are all board-certified plastic surgeons at Forsyth Plastic Surgery and we put the best interest of our patients first.”  Make an appointment for your annual skincare consultation. Gina Racca: “If you haven’t had a skincare consultation with a professional, licensed aesthetician in over 6 months, it’s time to make an appointment with one. Your skin changes over time and you need to be proactive about choosing products that are going to give you the results you’re looking for.”

Dr. Leslie Branch: “It’s never too early to see us so we can make sure you are ready for your big day. For example, if you’re interested in a breast augmentation plus a chin injection, we can help you create a timeline so on event day, you’re looking and feeling beautiful and confident.”  Consider microblading or permanent makeup in 2022. Kinsley Nix: “Our practice added microblading in 2021 and it’s been incredibly popular. We can fill in sparse brows, give you a perfect permanent eyeliner and tint lips for a very natural look. This saves time and keeps your makeup application look more consistent.”  See if your plastic surgeon has satellite offices. JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2022

 Schedule laser appointments. Dr. Andy Schneider: “The winter is the perfect time to come in for a laser appointment, whether it’s for an IPL or CO2 resurfacing. There’s less sun this time of year so it’s really the perfect time for some skincare corrections.”  Schedule a miraDry consultation for a sweat-free summer!  Plan a CoolSculpting consultation or additional cycles. Gina Racca: “CoolSculpting can take up to 3-6 months to see the full benefits, so January and February are great months to get started and begin getting ready for summer.”  Book a CoolTone consultation and begin to firm up your abs, fanny and thighs for spring break and the summer ahead.  Wellness: Start and continue an exercise program. On December 1st, Carolina Vintiques will be celebrating its one-year anniversary at its new Clemmons location at 2550 Lewisville-Clemmons Road. After four years in a mill house off of Stratford Road, Carolina Vintiques owner Shelle McCollum decided it was time to expand her shop. She knew her new location needed to provide her and her team with adequate room to paint, along with an easier layout for carrying large pieces of furniture in and out of the store. Shelle passed by her new Clemmons location daily before biting the bullet and calling the property home to Carolina Vintiques.

Currently, Shelle shares her floor space with seven vendors who make each section of the store unique.

Each vendor renting space in the store paints their own furniture and displays their products with their own flair. Although the store is home to various vendors with individual styles, the inventory at Carolina Vintiques blends beautifully together without seeming cluttered or overwhelming, as many antique shops struggle with.

Carolina Vintiques isn’t just an ideal shopping spot for a girls’ day out. While passersby might initially assume that mostly women shop at the store, the location is quite popular among male customers as well. According to Shelle, “It’s a huge compliment when men comment on how enjoyable our store is. We have so many couples who come to shop and find something that catches both of their eyes.”

I remember it like it was yesterday - the first Thanksgiving that I volunteered to help cook. My culinary skills have improved over the years, but this was a time when cooking just wasn’t my thing. My mother prepped the turkey and dropped it off at my house with detailed instructions on when and how to put it in.

This was the extent that I was allowed to help. I was notorious for burning water. I still don’t know why my mother trusted me with the turkey. Perhaps since she prepped it and all I had to do was place it in the oven nothing could possibly go wrong.

Ha. Ha. Once the turkey was placed in the oven, my daughter and I went about our morning watching the parade as we always did. When all of a sudden..

What’s that smell?

Is that smoke?

Before I knew it the house began to fill with smoke and all the fire alarms were blaring in our ears.

I sprang into action and got my daughter and dog out of the house.

All I remember amongst the chaos was my daughter yelling “Momma! Save the turkey!”

I can look back on this and laugh now. I remember, though, the feeling of pure panic. If I ruined the turkey, I feared I would single handedly have ruined Thanksgiving. Thankfully, I only used a too shallow pan to put the turkey in and grease had dripped onto the oven. A rookie mistake. When the smoke cleared, the turkey was indeed saved and put into a bigger pan.

Thanksgiving was saved that year and we had a nice laugh around the table talking about my culinary mishap.

It makes me think about how much we juggle on Thanksgiving.

is going to bring that no one likes, but everyone eats and raves about how good it is.

She proudly sits at the table rattling off her recipe as everyone secretly shovels the food to the family dog who does, indeed, love Aunt Susie’s stuffing.

Thanksgiving isn’t really about the food (okay - maybe a little bit) or the endless amounts of dishes and hours on your aching feet you spend to prepare a meal and ensure it comes out hot and on time. It’s about the family. The laughter around the too small table that precariously sits people all crammed together.

The rubbing elbows, passing of food, and the thousand conversations that all seem to overlap each other. It’s about the unbuttoned pants and football games, as you wait for the coveted turkey sandwich from leftovers. Thanksgiving is about family, the ones that are here and those that have passed on, blessing our lives, and making sure that through even the most chaotic of events, that the turkey is saved.

So, as you strategically plan your Thanksgiving holiday, worry how it all will get done, and already feel your back and feet beginning to ache, remember that you’re not just creating a wonderful meal, you’re creating memories. And at the end of the day, no matter what happens, always save the turkey!

End of Year Financial Planning Tips

As we approach the end of 2021, the team at Marzano Capital Group wants to put emphasis on a handful of important items when it comes to your personal finance. Please see below for some helpful year-end financial tips!

1.) BENEFIT CHANGES AT WORK:

The window for open enrollment and workplace benefits typically lands on November 1st. It is important to know what changes may affect your healthcare coverage and retirement plan benefits. Employers may change certain aspects of your healthcare insurance or retirement plan, so please do not gloss over those.

2.) BENEFICIARY REVIEW:

Performing a beneficiary review on your financial accounts is always a great idea! In the event something unexpected were to happen to you, it is important that your assets transfer to the ones you currently intend them to go to. Make sure your retirement plan at work, additional investment accounts, bank accounts, and life insurance policies have the proper information listed under beneficiary designations.

3.) BE AWARE OF GAINS AND LOSSES:

As an investor, you should be cognizant about how much you have realized in gains and/or losses inside your non-retirement investment accounts.

It is a financial advisor’s duty to help try and grow your assets but it is also important to be prepared for any taxable consequences. Know that measures may be taken in certain cases to try to achieve this in a more taxefficient manner.

4.) REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS:

If you turned age 72 during 2021, you are now considered Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) stage per the IRS. This means you are required to take dollars out of your retirement accounts this year and every year moving forward. Please make sure you do not overlook this, as the penalty can be rather steep if you do not take your RMD. Your investment team should help you keep up with this. It may be time, at this stage, to consider consolidating your IRAs at one custodian to help keep up with what amount you must withdraw. Also, if you have charitable intent, please speak to your Financial Advisor, as you may want to look at using all or part of your RMD to fund the charitable causes you support!

5.) ACCESS RISK:

Last but certainly not least, please take time during your year-end portfolio review to ask your investment professional about the risk level of your investments. Your team of investment professionals should utilize tools that clearly articulate this to you. It is important to know roughly how much downside and upside you can expect in different market conditions.

The Thanksgiving Hunt

It was so cold I couldn’t feel my toes. Or my hands. But my adoring boyfriend, Elijah, decided that to have an impressive first Thanksgiving at our new home, we had to hunt for our own turkey. With guns.

I wasn’t cut out for this life. I’d rather go to the grocery store, but we lived in the middle of nowhere. No gas station for miles. Woods everywhere. And I’d be the first to die. No questions asked.

As I trekked through the woods, my boot got stuck in the snow.

In the distance, I heard rustling. “What’s that noise?” I huddled closer to Elijah. “It’s BigFoot.

I knew he was real.” I whispered as Elijah put his finger over his mouth to quiet me.

“Did I get it?” I scurried out of his arms and ran forward. No turkey.

“Huh? Well, I guess he must have gotten scared.”

Elijah shrugged.

“Darn!”

“Hunting isn’t always guaranteed. We might have to come back out tomorrow.” Elijah took my gun from me and pulled his jacket tighter against him.

“Nope. We are getting a turkey today!” I said loudly. Then the sound of clucking, or squealing, I don’t even know how to describe that sound, ended my rant.

“What the--?” The turkey I had just tried to shoot was coming at us at full speed.

“Oh, my god! He’s angry.” I hid behind Elijah.

His bright green eyes stood out against the massive snow that was falling in huge flakes.

Elijah lived for this life. Me? I was a city girl through and through. But love was love and mine was a country boy who stole my heart and I’d do anything for him. Like hunting for turkey in the middle of a blizzard.

Elijah pointed the gun at him, and the thing weaved like he was trained in special ops or something.

“Patience, Em.” He brushed a kiss to my cheek, instantly warming me.

I couldn’t help but start laughing uncontrollably.

My gravestone would read:

“I think we better run,” Elijah said, grabbing my hand and taking off at a sprint. Glancing back, the turkey was hot on our heels.

“Look.” Gently he turned my chin to the direction of a turkey. “You can make this shot, babe.”

Here lies Emma Sampson.

“Nope, you do it.”

“Come on. It’ll get away. Just aim. And shoot.”

He steadied my hands as I stared at him.

“What the heck is so funny right now? That turkey is deranged.”

“You’re supposed to be shooting us a Thanksgiving turkey not looking at me.” He chuckled.

“We are running from a turkey!” Losing my footing, I fell right into a snowbank.

I steadied the gun and focused on the turkey. I could do this. Because this was my life now. A girl plucked from the city and transposed into the country, all because she fell in love.

With a steady hand, I released my finger from the trigger, the backfire sending me flying against Elijah.

“I got you,” he whispered against my ear.

“I can’t get up!” I screeched as I looked around for the killer turkey that was terrorizing us.

“I got you.” Elijah stopped and bent down, his knees sinking into the snow. He glanced around.

“I think he’s gone.” Brushing my hair that was sticking out from my hat, he smiled down at me.

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a ring box.

“Oh, god.” I covered my face with my hands. We had talked about marriage. A family. Which is why

we bought our first home together in the beautiful countryside. So, Elijah proposing wasn’t the problem, it was the fact that my butt cheeks were getting frostbite and there was a turkey on the loose that wanted to kill us.

“I tried to think of a thousand ways to ask you to marry me, Em. I’ve carried this ring with me daily for the past month. But seeing you get all worked up over missing the turkey, watching your cute self struggle to get out of the snow bank, this is us. A city girl and a country boy, trying to make it work when they’re so different.”

Pulling out the ring, he placed it on my finger. So many sparkles.

“Will you marry me?”

Before I could even open my mouth to respond, which was a yes, the killer turkey came back, and this time took a chunk out of Elijah’s butt.

“The turkey just assaulted me!” Elijah danced around in the snow as he rubbed his injury.

The turkey just stood there, glancing between us, ruffling its feathers. The poor thing just looked a little mad. I kind of felt bad for him.

“I think he just needs a hug.” Elijah glared at me as I maneuvered myself onto my knees.

“Hey, little guy, I’m sorry I tried to shoot you.” I opened my arms.

My ring sparkled and happiness filled my heart.

Everyone deserves love. Even a turkey. He waddled right into my arms, apparently accepting the peace offering.

“I just got my girl stolen by a turkey.” Elijah chuckled.

“So, about that answer…”

“What do you think, Billy?”

“You named the turkey that was supposed to be our dinner?” Elijah shook his head.

“Don’t say those things around him. He’s sensitive.”

I covered Billy’s ears. Standing up, I stood on my tiptoes, my lips close to Elijah’s.

“It’s a yes, by the way.” I smiled before crashing my lips onto his.

“Phew.” Elijah let out his breath. “Thought maybe you went and fell in love with Billy.”.

“Seems he likes us.” Elijah reached out his hand and Billy pecked him.

“Or just me.” I giggled as I touched Billy’s head. “Let’s go home, fiancée.”

Elijah and I walked through the woods with Billy trailing behind us. I got not only a fiancé today, but Billy the turkey who almost was Thanksgiving dinner and now a member of the family.

You can spruce up your stuffing and go from good to gourmet simply by adding your fav herbs like rosemary, sage, and thyme. Enjoy creative, herb-inspired ideas to celebrate Thanksgiving - or for any time you have a hankering for the herbalicious!

Much more than garnishes that gorgeously glamorize your cocktails and mocktails, herbs can take center stage in the flavor department.

Combine the sippable with the savory and creatively craft your beverages with fresh herbs. Here are some fun sippable ideas:

MINT CRANBERRY POMEGRANATE MOJITO: Try a combination of fresh mint, gin, and tonic; rum and sparkling water/ seltzer; cranberry and pomegranate juice; grenadine; or mint simple syrup.

FOR HERBAL TEA LOVERS: Steep peppermint, spearmint, and/or lemon balm in hot water to refresh and soothe your senses.

With no stimulants like caffeine, you won’t miss any sweet slumber.

While sipping and savoring your herbflavored and herbgarnished beverages, also consider adding them to your main dishes and side courses. Here are some recipes to herbify staple Thanksgiving dishes, like adding fresh herbs and Herbes de Provence to your turkey and fresh mint to your cranberry sauce.

ROSEMARY LEMON BALM MARTINI: Try a combination of fresh rosemary and/ or lemon balm; citron vodka; rosemary and/or lemon; simple syrup/honey/ maple syrup; Cointreau/gin/Triple Sec; or lemon juice and zest.

SAGE CITRUS HONEY BOURBON: Try a combination of sage/honey/ orange/lemon simple syrups; bourbon; orange and/or lemon juice; orange/ citrus bitters; or honey/maple syrup.

HERBES DE PROVENCE CITRUS TURKEY Ingredients: • 1 15-pound turkey • 1 orange, cut into wedges • 1 lemon, cut into wedges • 1 onion, cut into wedges • 6 sprigs fresh rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano • 2 Tablespoons dried savory, marjoram, and lavender (optional) • 1 Tablespoon olive oil • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil or butter • 1 Tablespoon honey or maple syrup, optional to add sweetness • 1½ teaspoon each lemon and orange zest • 1½ teaspoon grated ginger, optional • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth • 3 green tea bags, optional for health benefits • 1½ teaspoon Sea or Himalayan salt • 1½ teaspoon ground black pepper • 1½ Tablespoon soy sauce, optional for gravy

Instructions Position rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rinse and dry turkey; place into a large roasting pan.

Assemble orange, lemon, onion wedges, and tuck half the sprigs of fresh herbs in and around the turkey cavity.

Slather turkey in melted coconut oil or butter.

Pour broth along the sides and in the turkey cavity, then drizzle with olive oil.

Add green tea bags, submerged in broth.

Combine Herbes de Provence, salt, spices, grated ginger, lemon and orange zest and sprinkle on turkey.

Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to marinate before roasting.

Cover with foil and roast for 20 minutes, then add the other half of fresh herb sprigs.

Roast for another 40 minutes, reducing the cooking temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cut an incision in the skin of thigh to determine when thoroughly cooked.

Let stand for 30 minutes.

In a pan, prepare gravy with the broth from the turkey, gradually whisking in flour to thicken.

Add in soy sauce (optional).

Dip a spoon into gravy mixture to test taste and adapt, as needed.

“WHY JESUS CAN’T I GET THIS

THING RIGHT?”

Scott Schuler was a man on a mission… to figure out how to get beyond the mechanics of Christianity and pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ. He and his wife, Lory, have navigated the hard roads of life, seeking solutions to the various challenges, and finding that faith often seemed easier to talk about than to actually live out.

According to Scott, “I was a miserable Christian. I had a hard time navigating all the rules and trying to be ‘religious.’ I looked for resources to help me navigate things but never found what I was looking for. I read so many books trying to figure out how to get beyond the complexities of it all. Because the truth is – the decision to follow Jesus is simple. But doing it is hard.”

Scott wanted a book that he could read in tandem with his Bible to help him grow closer to Jesus and mature as a believer. He wanted a resource to foster his faith development and encourage him on his walk as a Christian.

After reading countless books that always fell short of his expectations, Scott decided to write it himself. “The journey started with a whole lot of journaling and studying,” he said. “In the process, I earned a Ph.D. in Christian Counseling and extensively traveled around the world, including missionary work. As I began to grow and share what I was learning with other believers, God showed me how my studies could impact others’ lives. My new book, ‘Why “I recommend this material if you want a relationship above all other relationships with our savior, Jesus Christ. The Time is NOW: LEADing the Next Generation of Women LEADers

Winston-Salem is the hardest city in which to escape childhood poverty in the United States.* Despite this distressing statistic, how do we ensure that our young women have the tools they need to break down these barriers and become the next generation of leaders?

LEAD Girls of North Carolina is on a mission to help girls beat these odds by providing young girls with the tools they need to overcome barriers to success and thrive.

This one-of-a-kind organization cultivates the next generation of women engineers, nurses, business owners, and LEADers.

Through this nonprofit’s work with local atrisk girls, we are changing the trajectory of their lives and breaking the cycle of poverty and disenfranchisement for our girls.

“We are losing our children, and the time is now! We must provide a space for our girls to navigate challenges and learn alternatives to fighting and negative choices. We must be willing to listen and give a safe space for our girls to find their voices and dream again,” says Joy Nelson Thomas, the founder and executive director of Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams (LEAD) Girls of NC. LEAD is dedicated to providing the tools and resources that low-income/ at-risk preteen girls must have to become productive citizens and active leaders in their communities. Using an evidence-

Through programs at Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and our community LEAD Program, LEAD challenges girls to look to the future and envision a world where women are at the forefront of innovation and impact. And it’s working! Girls who participate in LEAD programming are 90% more likely to report being more confident setting goals, working better with others, and being motivated to do good things.

More than 87% of girls report feeling connected to their families, and 78% feel more connected to their community.

On average, 2 in 3 girls report doing better academically after completing our leadership program. This impact is paving the way for these future leaders.

LEAD has provided girls and their families the tools and resources they need to overcome the challenges of the past two years and emerge stronger than before.

At-risk girls in Winston-Salem have been impacted greatly by the pandemic when their development and mental wellbeing are so critical. Despite confronting generational poverty, food insecurity, and social and family issues, girls participating

Participants were led through several workshops, helping our girls and their families navigate social anxiety amplified by the pandemic, rebuild self-confidence, and cultivate interests in STEM fields.

“I’ve never really known what I want to do when I grow up, but LEAD has taught me that I have options and I can set goals for my future and actually accomplish them. I’m happy to know I can make a plan and do something exciting with my future,” said LEAD Girl, Sofia.

Unlike November 2020, I am hopeful the Covid virus will not keep me, or you, from gathering with friends and family this year. As this season of Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of all the blessings in my life and am thankful. Being a part of this wonderful magazine is one of those blessings and so are you. A Guide to Europe’s Christmas Markets

No one celebrates Christmas quite like Europe. With its charming, romantic, fairytale-like towns, there is no better background for stringing Christmas lights and freshly fallen snow. While local Christmas parades and ice skating at Rockefeller Center are beloved Christmas traditions for Americans, why not broaden your horizons for the holidays and catch a flight to Europe’s most beautiful cities next Christmas season?

Commencing just before Advent during the last few days of November, Christmas markets typically run during the weeks leading up to Christmas, with some running over into the first few days of January. Keep in mind, if you’re planning on heading to some of Europe’s most popular Christmas market hotspots, book your accommodations around six months in advance, as many other tourists likely share the same idea. While hotel prices might not be nearly as high as the summer months, expect a spike in prices closer to the holidays, with a drop in early to mid-January.

Germany is one of the most notorious countries when it comes to the Christkindlmarkt. In Bavaria, Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is one of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in Germany, with 180 stalls lining Nuremberg’s Main Market Square. Locals and tourists sip on mulled wine, grilled sausages, and German Spekulatius cookies (almond spice cookies).

would be complete without Lebkuchen, or classic German gingerbread.

Nuremberg’s Bavarian neighbor Munich is another Christkindlmarkt icon, and also home to attractions such as the famous Hofbrauhaus and Oktoberfest. At Munich’s Christkindlmarkt, visitors and locals participate in the Krampus Run, an alpine region tradition of over 500 years. Unlike St. Nicholas, Krampus is a horned, “funny devil” who gains respect from naughty children by using fear. With over 400 participants, Krampuses can be seen parading through Munich’s pedestrian zone in extravagant (and quite heavy) costumes, costing anywhere from 1,800 to 2,500 euros each.

The Czech Republic’s stunning city of Prague is a year-round sight for sore eyes, but becomes even more mesmerizing in December. Prague’s Old Town Square market is one of its better-known Christmas markets, bustling with roasted hams, sausages, smoked meat dumplings, pancakes, and most importantly, Czech beers. Another option for cold visitors is grog, a warm combination of rum, water, sugar, and lemon. Families can pet farm animals and admire the market’s nativity scene in wooden stables.

In Switzerland, Zurich’s stunning Old Town is the ideal location for a Christmas market, along with charming Bern. Attendees at Swiss Christmas markets snack on roasted chestnuts, fondue, and raclette, a Swiss alpine cheese usually served melted with bread or potatoes. The Bern Starsmarket is a culinary paradise, with 60 huts serving up delicious treats and hot beverages.

Vienna, Austria, hosts Magic of Advent musical concerts to celebrate the season, along with a 32,000 square-foot ice skating rink for locals and tourists alike. The Christmas market in Rathausplatz is the most popular Christmas market in Vienna, with an impressive spread of 150 stalls selling Austrian glass ornaments, beeswax candles, and wooden toys. Salzburg’s market is much smaller than Vienna’s, with 100 stalls nestled in its Old Town. Along with hot chocolate and mulled wine, Austrian Christmas markets are known for Weihnachtspunsch, which is

Once again, the holiday season is upon us! Many of you may have already begun to decorate, shop and prepare for a joyful season with friends and family. However, for many in our community, the holidays are a time of anxiety and worry. Especially for families with young children who are struggling financially, out of work, or even homeless.

Knowing how important it is for a child to receive a new toy at Christmas, the Twin City Santa (TCS) event was formed in 2002 by volunteers who wanted to make a real difference, right here at home, and it is still a 100% volunteer driven event. In a little less than two decades and with outstanding community support, Twin City Santa has provided more than 40,000 toys to children here in Forsyth County. It is through our continued support and financial giving that they are able to make such an impact on the littlest members of our community.

“In the beginning, Twin City Santa served several purposes: first and foremost, to get toys to deserving kids, but we also wanted to get people downtown and encourage philanthropy among a generation of younger people,” said Wake Wagoner, one of only a handful of volunteers that are making this year’s TCS event happen.

Now in its 18th year, the Twin City Santa Annual Toy Drive and Semi-Formal, for guests 21 years old and up, will take place at The Millennium Center on Friday, December 3rd. There are so many ways that you can support this vital event and cause! Perhaps you and yours are looking for a way to kick off the season with flair? Then the VIP PASS is for you! Types of People You Meet at the Movie Theater

THE INDECISIVE COUPLE You’ve purchased your movie ticket at the window outside the theater and are looking to grab a Diet Coke to sip on throughout the movie at the concessions stand. You stand in line behind a seemingly nice couple, who are having a difficult time deciding what to order – although there aren’t that many options in the first place. The husband wants a large popcorn, but the wife thinks that’s “too much” and wants “light butter,” much to the husband’s chagrin.

While the happily married couple thinks it’s cute to the concessions employees and people waiting behind them that they are having a playful argument over a simple popcorn combo, you’re less than amused.

Their antics are cutting into the possibility of getting the very last row in the theater to yourself, as more and more people pile into the building.

THE CLINGER When you’ve finally purchased your Diet Coke, you are relieved to find that no one has inhabited the row in the very back of the theater.

Because you’re considerate and crippled by social anxiety and the thought of having to squeeze past someone to run to the restroom mid-movie, you choose an end seat for easy aisle access. A few minutes after you’ve gotten comfortable, you’re relieved to find that not many others are actually going to be joining you for the movie, as there are many open seats. As soon as you begin to relax, a family with two small children walks through the doors and decides to sit in the seats directly in front of you. Why, out of all the open seats in the theater, did this family want to sit so closely to you? Do they not understand that you don’t want to stare at their second grader’s hairbow during the movie? Would it be rude if you discreetly moved down a couple of seats?

THE LATE ARRIVALS Life isn’t fair, so you decide to accept your fate as sitting behind a potentially noisy family throughout the movie and seek solace in your Diet Coke. You’ve made it past the previews and are about 10 minutes into the movie when another family comes straggling through the loud theater doors and distracts everyone as they try to decide on a seat in the dark.

Fortunately, they decided to sit nowhere near you – unlike the family in front of you with no concept of personal space.

THE TALKERS As the movie starts getting good, the children in front of you are starting to get restless (which you predicted). They begin asking their parents questions and are quickly losing their ability to sit still. This isn’t even a children’s movie, you think to yourself. You hold in your frustration for as long as possible, even as the children leave dirt on the seats in front of them by kicking and rubbing their dusty shoes all over them. And for the parents? They don’t seem to mind at all.

How dare they find their own children endearing?

Why did they have to buy their children candy with the crinkliest wrappers?

Boldly, you let out an audible sigh, hoping the parents will catch on.

Your sigh falls on deaf ears, however, and you are left to stew in silence in the back of the theater.

THE EXIT STAMPEDE The movie is coming to a close as you hear people packing up their belongings before the closing credits roll across the screen. Since you’re not in any hurry, you don’t mind waiting until the movie actually ends before making noise and gathering your things.

Almost immediately after the closing credits begin, families race to the exit and leave their empty popcorn bags and drinking cups in their seats for a poor theater employee to clean up before the next showing. You can’t figure out why everyone is in such a rush to leave the theater. Was the movie that bad? Even the family in front of you couldn’t wait to leave. As for you, you’re content sitting in the back row until the theater has cleared out and you can exit the doors in peace.

How the Women Behind Starboard Accounting & Consulting Prioritize Passion and Profififit

WORK LIFE BALANCE ISN’T A NUMBERS GAME

“When I hired fellow mothers, it was because I know that women are talented and capable and need some flexibility in their life. We’ve all gradually phased back into the office while our team supports one another’s workloads, clients, and family needs,” Kerri shared.

Prioritizing their passion for family values and worklife balance is what creates some of the best client relationships they could ask for. “Providing flexibility and allowing our staff to show up powerfully at work so they can take things off our clients’ plates and show up powerfully for their own family is everything! Our multifaceted team overlaps in services with everyone doing bookkeeping and two active payroll members, so there’s always someone who can jump in and serve clients at any time.”

Nearly six months before the coronavirus pandemic began, the women behind Starboard Accounting & Consulting decided to add a room to their office to create a shared flexible workspace where they could bring their kids. This included adding a big couch, an area rug, play items, a table and chair set, and desks to help their staff continue to work when life happens. After all, any working parent knows that children get sick, and school closures occur while Mom and Dad still have a job to do.

“Little did we know what a fortuitous decision that would be,” shared Kerri Stewart, Founder and President of Starboard Accounting & Consulting since 2008.

“When quarantine happened in 2020, there were days where there were more kids than there were adults in the office! We thought, ‘How are we going to get all of our work done?’ But our team figured it out without skipping a beat. We even took turns having one of us take all the kids to the playground next door!”

Kerri first launched the business in 2008, when she was 27 years old before starting her family but knew she needed a plan for an eventual maternity leave. “I knew I needed to have team members to help fill in when the time came, and it really made me think about the kind of team and company culture I wanted to establish. So often, women feel like they have to choose between family and career, and it’s simply untrue.”

The Starboard Accounting & Consulting team is made up of eleven employees total, almost all with children of their own running from the youngest at two months old to the oldest in their twenties. As a matter of fact, in the last year alone, there was quite a baby boom in the office!

Kerri welcomed her third baby in September, Accounting Manager Amy Keegan had her second baby in March, and Payroll Manager Kris Reynolds had her second baby in July - that’s three separate maternity leaves all in less than one year!

While some businesses may have been ill-equipped to handle the logistics of this, the Starboard team had processes in place to make sure their clients had everything they needed and that they could still provide a superior client experience and results.

Their goal is to be personable, flexible, and empowering to their clients. From QuickBooks consulting to setting up bookkeeping and payroll services, the Starboard Accounting team does all of the leg work, getting clients confidently ready when it comes time to file end-ofyear taxes.

“We’re not a bunch of old men in suits!” Kerri laughed. “ This isn’t your grandpa’s accounting company and clients recognize that immediately. People are comfortable asking us the tough questions, letting us break down what a CPA firm may be asking for into daily “speak” and taking the mystery out of bookkeeping, payroll, and overall accounting.

“We are really flexible with how much or how little we do for our clients, so we can literally take the pieces that are causing the most frustration or confusion off your plate, but you keep the things that fall in your zone of genius.”

Kerri and her team see how many business owners come in with full plates and families of their own and truly feel honored being able to help provide services and encouragement to give them time back. When her own team leaves for the day knowing they are making an impact both in the office and at home, it’s incredibly rewarding. “You can have both. You can pick your kids up from school every day and go above and beyond for clients and get the work done. It just takes a little creativity some days, and I’m proud to say we’re very good at it.”

The Pain of Losing a Friend

We used to do everything together, waiting impatiently for Friday night to rush home and change into our pajamas. We’d meet at my house and order bad take-out, drink way too much wine, and watch reality TV mixed with vampire shows - it was our thing. You’d be so patient as my daughter would ask you to read her stories and play with her dolls and you gladly did it - all with a smile on your face.

We’d gossip, sleep, eat way too much chocolate and there was nothing we didn’t share with each other. We were best friends. Thick as thieves. And I thought nothing could tear us apart. I had waited a long time for a friend like you. Someone who understood the complexities of my life and was willing to see beyond it. Who knew my family wasn’t perfect but was willing to see beyond that in order to help me better myself.

You helped me realize my worth.

Then life got in the way. Our job that once had us working together had me moving on to a larger university. Our Friday nights turned into ‘once in a whiles,’ cramming in small talk when we could, and scheduling phone calls like we were business partners instead of friends. Slowly our friendship began to unravel, piece by piece.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss those Friday nights.

Those conversations and you always being there for me. You gave the advice I didn’t want to hear and the encouragement to pursue bigger and better things. To not remain stagnant and complacent when I had so much to offer.

I thank you for that.

Now, we are distant strangers. Exchanging fewer and fewer messages and I can’t remember the last time we spoke on the phone, but that’s okay because I hold onto the memories and cherish every one of them. Just like I cherish our friendship.

I moved away. Pursuing those lofty dreams that you stuck in my head and urged me to go after. I’ve found the love you knew I would and you - you’ve done amazing things, too.

Everything you ever wanted for yourself, it’s coming true. I wish I could be there - celebrating each thing with you, but for now, know that I am proud of you. Happy for you.

While we’ve both accomplished so much, our friendship has drifted over the years. I can’t just pick up and head to your house like I used to. Or pick up the phone and talk for hours, but I am and will always be your biggest fan. Cheering you on every step of the way. Every accomplishment, every milestone. And when something doesn’t go right or you need someone to talk you off that ledge, I am here.

I always will be. Because the pain of losing a friend forever is simply too much to bear. Our friendship will never disappear. It may look and feel different, but a bond like we share will never falter.

Being Authentic At Work

We’ve been hit by messaging for the past few years to BE OURSELVES. At this point, I think some folks got this down pat – they show up and are unapologetically themselves.

It’s what we should strive for right? Well… most of the time. What about at work?

I don’t know about you, but I have never fully been myself at work, and I think that’s ok. Too often, I think we are giving so much of US to everything we do - know what that leads to? Burnout, exhaustion, overwhelm, and more. You have to save something for yourself, and this is why I’ve been overjoyed with the amount of rejection of “the hustle” that’s been happening.

How do you balance your authentic self and the person you need to be at work? Read on for a few tips to get you started on your path to being authentic at work:

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SHARE? The first thing you need to do is determine what you want to share. Please note: this doesn’t mean that you should run and start sharing these things immediately! This is simply the FIRST step of figuring out how much of you to share.

Once you have those main ideas, think about this: your work is not your family. Yes, you can love the people you work with and truly enjoy spending time with them outside of work. Think about your family - most of us will excuse things they have done or said because they are family.

Do you want to excuse a colleague for saying something rude? Throwing you under the bus for not getting something done? Report you because they are upset with you?

No? Then remember that work isn’t your family, and look at that list again – if that makes you edit a bit, fantastic.

On the flip side, as much as some of us might want to never share anything about our lives at work – we probably should. Studies show that trust is built between people by sharing experiences and stories. It doesn’t have to be your life story – it’s ok to share weekend plans or exciting moments.

If you’re stuck, look at what other people share. Minus the folks that are obvious oversharers and the ones that share nothing, and you’ll get a baseline understanding.

BOUNDARIES What are the questions and topics that you won’t touch at work? My husband and I don’t talk about marriage at either of our works by choice: people can get a little gossipy, and we want our marriage to be just that – ours.

When people in my field start bashing a significant other or making comments about spending time with a spouse, I usually smile and nod to show empathy – but don’t offer anything on my side, even if we were in a moment of “UGH” (because we ALL get there!).

Now, this doesn’t mean that someone won’t directly ask you! You need to decide how much you want people to know. It’s YOUR choice, in the end, to share what you want to share – and not share things you’d rather not!

WHAT IF… You’ve got what you want to share – and what you don’t want to share.

You’ve established your boundaries.

And now someone asks you a question you aren’t comfortable answering.

This is why your boundaries are important to establish before the moment! Think back to what you want to share at work – and if this is something you don’t, you have a few options. You can ignore it and change the subject – this one might feel awkward! You can say, “No thank you.” This might also feel a little weird!

(Being direct always feels strange at first!) Or you can give a benign and basic answer – a smile, laugh, and move topics to follow – and move along. Most people will get the point!

The thought of being alone – or perhaps, alone again – this holiday season, may be weighing you down with feelings of sadness and despair. While others are anticipating the joyful reunions and celebrations to come, you are hurting inside. If you are inclined to minimize or dismiss your pain, please consider a healthier approach: be kind to yourself by planning ahead. Mental health and wellness professionals suggest adopting a few specific strategies to help combat your feelings of loneliness and isolation at this time of year.

HONOR YOUR FEELINGS Depending on your particular circumstances and ways of coping, you may notice feelings of anger, sadness, depression, or even jealousy. As opposed to pushing them down, or feeling bad about having them, name them. This is how you can start to take control of your experience. Instead of defaulting to telling yourself “I’m fine”- when you’re really not - say “I’m feeling very sad right now.” Then move to the next strategy.

SHARE YOUR FEELINGS Almost always, there is someone who will understand. Reach out to that person.

Acknowledge how you feel and hear them out, as well. The mere act of doing so will help you to feel “less alone.” But don’t leave it there. Make a point of talking about your loved ones, or about a holiday tradition or a specific memory you cherish. Doing so will help keep positive feelings fresh in your heart and mind while reinforcing the connections you have with others – even if you can’t be with them. And speaking of connections…

this really works! My close friends and kin were eager to think outside of the box in order to connect with me when we found ourselves isolated during the 2020 holiday season. But don’t wait until the hectic day before Thanksgiving or until Christmas Eve. Folks have already made their plans by then. Call a few weeks in advance. Suggest a time when you can talk by phone or get together on Facetime. If you don’t know how to use Facetime, Zoom, or another platform, get help in advance so that you are prepared.

Here’s a major tip: be flexible. Do your best to accommodate their schedule. For example, maybe you connect a few days before the actual holiday. And finally…

MAKE A PLAN FOR THOSE DAYS OF CELEBRATION Imagine that you have employed all of these strategies and it is now Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. Without a specific plan for how you will spend your time, you are likely to experience loneliness and sadness. Instead, literally map out your day. Maybe you’ll eat a “fancier” breakfast, play a game, watch a favorite movie, or help someone else who may be lonely by calling and sending some good cheer.

INITIATE A “WORKAROUND” That’s right, reach out to your loved ones and suggest a way to connect over the holidays, even if you can’t be together in person.

Why We Complain

“Would you stop complaining already?”

“Complaining never makes anything better.”

“Whine, whine, whine!”

“Nobody likes a complainer.”

• The Venter – she’s the one who isn’t trying to solve anything; she just wants to be heard and to have her feelings validated, as in my personal example. Once she gets that attention, she can usually let it go.

We’ve heard these thumbs-down statements and perhaps have made a few of them ourselves. And yet, most of us complain. I do, and I sometimes get tired of hearing myself, or I’ll preface a whining complaint with “I know I’m complaining but, I can’t BELIEVE this. I am beside myself. Blah, blah, blah.” Truthfully, a vent like this one helps me blow off steam that a meditative, deep breathing exercise might have also accomplished. Honestly, though, I sometimes feel guilty once I’m spent. Should I? Should any of us feel guilty about complaining?

• The Sympathy Seeker – he’s the one who wants to be heard – and often – while usually emphasizing how much worse off he is than you. It’s the “I bet you can’t top this” type of complaining that gets attention and can provoke competitive storytelling.

THE UPSIDE OF COMPLAINING

I felt a wee bit vindicated when psychologist and author Robert Biswas-Diener asked, “If complaining is so awful, why is it so prevalent?” The answer is that “complaining is simply expressing dissatisfaction.” I like that definition because it’s an observation, not a judgment. It invites us to consider complaining without any “stuff” attached to it. With this neutral mindset, we can better understand why we engage in a behavior that has such a bad rap.

THE DOWNSIDE OF COMPLAINING

Mental health folks observe that personality, age, tolerance for conflict, and “image” are all factors in determining how and how much we complain. I would add “family of origin” and even “upbringing” as influencers. Individual factors aside, you may recognize: • The Chronic Complainer – for her, complaining is a habit of mind and mouth. She always finds something wrong and can’t seem to notice a silver lining anywhere. For her, the glass is never more than half full, while she tends to ruminate and dwell on setbacks instead of steps forward. Her complaining habit may have re-wired her brain to the point that it is ingrained. Instead of feeling a sense of release or letting go after complaining, chronic complainers may experience higher stress and anxiety levels.

Remember, this isn’t about judging. It’s about understanding...and seeing ourselves.

Complaining can be a good thing. If we are complaining because we’re feeling stuck, we may be able to clarify our thoughts and feelings just by verbalizing. We might feel a sense of release (it’s off my chest), validation (I’m not crazy; he gets it!), and our listener may offer a perspective that helps us see things differently or have an insight that allows us to identify a way forward.

Complaining can also be toxic. If we become fixated on “the problem,” we may never move toward a solution. We may find ourselves in a cycle of negativity and seek out others who are similarly stuck. The other outcome is that, besides feeling miserable ourselves, complaining may push others away, leaving us feeling lonely and isolated.

Here’s my take: there is a place in our lives for responsible, purposeful complaining, the kind that seeks light at the end of the tunnel. But complaining that reinforces the darkness and keeps us stuck does us - and those around us - no good.

West Forsyth High School senior Emma Cate Burhans carries a full plate of academia, athletics, and philanthropy, while simultaneously making time for her friends and family. From a young age, Emma Cate has felt called to lead others and set a positive example for youth in her community. As co-president of West Forsyth’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Emma Cate’s faith plays a major role in her life and inspires her to help others in need.

Emma Cate and her co-president of FCA are responsible for organizing club meetings, coordinating guest speakers, and planning transportation and music for FCA services. Throughout the school year, she and her fellow club members participate in large events, including the Special Olympics, to help those in need.

In addition to her role in FCA, Emma Cate is also a member of other academic and service clubs at West Forsyth High School, including National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Girls Service Club, and Anchor Club. Club members give back to the community in various ways, such as writing cards for first responders, nursing homes, and caretakers, along with collecting nonperishable food items and children’s clothing for donations, and maintaining the school’s clean campus by picking up garbage on the property.

One of the most influential experiences in Emma Cate’s young life was when she took part in a mission trip with Calvary Baptist Church.

During the three-day mission, she and fellow church members organized the Kids Extreme mission, which allowed underprivileged children in the community to fellowship and sing with Calvary Baptist

Additionally, Emma Cate and her peers took the children to a Winston-Salem Dash game, where they were able to connect with the children, build new relationships, and share the gospel with them. Having the opportunity to provide children with a positive example and plant the seed of the gospel in their lives was touching to Emma Cate, and she is forever grateful to have been involved in making a difference.

Since faith is such an important aspect of Emma Cate’s life, she intends on continuing to help the community when she attends college. In fact, Emma Cate feels compelled to lead both spiritually and professionally, as she plans to study business or marketing after graduating from high school. She has always looked for leadership opportunities in high school, and her role in FCA has further solidified her desire to lead in college. She hopes to become involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (also referred to as “Cru”), and serve as a mentor for middle and high school students.

Outside of volunteering, Emma Cate excels in sports as one of the co-captains for her varsity volleyball team, in addition to holding a role in West Forsyth High School’s Student Government Association (SGA). When she has a rare moment of free time, she enjoys being with friends and family. A simple girl at heart, Emma Cate is happy spending time with her loved ones no matter the activity. Whether it’s hiking, taking a walk at Tanglewood, or sitting at a restaurant, she savors every moment with her favorite people.

Native to Clemmons, Emma Cate has a long list of favorite local hot spots she likes to frequent.

When asked to narrow her list down to her absolute favorite local boutique, she named faith-based Hip Chics Boutique as her go-to spot for apparel and accessories. As for local restaurants, she prefers snacking on Tex-Mex at The Porch Kitchen and Cantina.

Currently, Emma Cate is enjoying her senior year of high school and is looking forward to where life takes her next. If she could travel anywhere in the world, she would catch a flight to the beautiful country of Greece. The islands, ancient sites, and foods of Greece are fascinating to her, in addition to it being the film location of one of her favorite movies, Mamma Mia!

My drive to bring my tangible self into the fullness of my conscious self makes me, me.

I’ve been regularly referred to as a “force of nature,” which I now wear as a badge of honor. I say “now” because I was socialized to believe that women should be demure and docile, and so being described as something powerful was an idea I struggled to accept about myself. I like to use the space I take up in society to lift up others around me. Whether in work or in life, my goal every day is to be a support to those who need it. I feel like most of my inspiration to evolve and to do better comes from doing work with and for queers and others who belong to other marginalized communities.

What makes you YOU?

I was raised by beautiful people who allowed me to believe that I was great just as I am and who gave me a strong spiritual foundation that has truly framed so much of my decision making in life. I also believe African American culture has shaped so much of who I am. I see myself as creative and draw upon the many assets and blessings from my ancestors for resources throughout every aspect of my life.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the wisdom of my children Kalonji and Karoline-Kellie. I spent and continue to spend so much time educating them on who they are, the many ways in which they can contribute to our world, and the importance of purpose, mission and community. When I hear and see how they respond to worldly events and even events in their own personal lives I am most proud.

What keeps you going when things are tough?

Faith. I see the work I do as a continuum of work that has taken place in the past and the work that will be required in the future. Though it often feels as though we have so far to go to achieve change, I hold that in tension with how far we have come and I am encouraged to keep going.

What keeps you up at night?

Really nothing. I sleep well at night.

Sleeping well is one way I measure my self care and mental health. 90% of the time I sleep throughout the night and wake up ready to jump into action.

What are you most proud of?

I’ve put in the work to grow and develop who I am as a person. Much of this didn’t occur until my mid-thirties. I had to learn how to move my identity away from who I was in proximity to others (a partner, a mother, etc.) to who I actually am. The pandemic changed me as I know it did many others, and it forced me to face some uncomfortable truths about myself that could have broken me. When faced with that reality, I chose myself, perhaps for the first time in my life. We aren’t always given permission to put our needs ahead of others and that’s a fail on society. It’s okay to see to your own needs.

What keeps you going when things are tough?

I draw a lot of motivation from my partner and children. My partner manages to both challenge and support me in ways that are absolutely necessary for my personal growth. They are also really killer with book recommendations (need a horror suggestion, let us know). My children are the purest reflections of myself, which can be equally annoying and amazing. Watching them grow into their own character, personality, and identity reminds me that we are all constantly evolving and should be support systems for one another, even during times of literal isolation.

Feeling the unconditional love and support of my family during some of the most trying years of my life absolutely carried me through and kept me going, especially considering how challenging life has been for them as well.

What keeps you up at night?

If it’s not the four cups of coffee I’ve had throughout the day (shout out to Camel City Coffee and Coffee Park Airstream), it’s usually me remembering awkward interactions I had throughout the day. Ever say “I love you” to a client when hanging up the phone? I’m also an incredibly Type A personality with multiple calendars and notebooks, so I like to plan ahead and organize what I’m going to do the following day. Sometimes I try to work out a budget that will allow me to buy that 13-foot skeleton from Lowe’s, so I focus on only the most important things as you can see.

You May Have Never Heard Of

A film can get overlooked for any number of reasons and still be perfectly wonderful to watch.

Some movies don’t get the credit they deserve for various reasons, and because of that, hidden gems may get overshadowed by the big blockbuster films. Below are some films which may have been a hit with critics but never really found much of an audience. They’ve been forgotten, neglected, overlooked by many…but that doesn’t mean they won’t WOW you if given the chance!

TAKE SHELTER (2011) Curtis (Michael Shannon) is a working-class husband and father questioning whether his terrifying dreams of an apocalyptic storm signal something real to come or the onset of an inherited mental illness. He lives in a small town in Ohio with his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), and daughter, Hannah, a six-year-old deaf girl. Curtis channels his anxiety into obsessively building a storm shelter in his backyard and mostly keeps his fears of what his dreams may signify to himself. This is a haunting tale of a character crumbling under the weight of real-life problems. Using suspense and atmosphere with chilling effect, Director Jeff Nichols creates a powerful psychological thriller that will stay on your mind long after the movie ends.

THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE (2017) This film tells the true story of how Jan and Antonina Zabinski rescued hundreds of Polish Jews from the Germans by hiding them in their Warsaw zoo during World War II. The movie takes place in 1939, Poland, home to Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski (Johan Heldenbergh). Jan is the caretaker at the Warsaw Zoo, which flourishes under his and his wife’s supervision. When the Nazis invade Poland, Jan and Antonina are forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. The Zabinskis covertly begin working with the Resistance and take action to save the lives of hundreds from the Warsaw Ghetto.

PRELUDE TO A KISS (1992) When you marry someone, you promise to love that person forever - no matter what! But no one could have expected what happened to Peter (Alec Baldwin) and Rita (Meg Ryan) in this quirky romantic comedy with a surprising twist. Youthful Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan are great in this strange, early ‘90s film that seemed to get lost somewhere along the way.

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) Casey Affleck leads an all-star cast – Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler – in this highly acclaimed and heartbreaking film about a private Boston janitor, Lee Chandler (Affleck), whose life is transformed when he learns his dead brother has made him the guardian of his 16-year-old nephew, Patrick. Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea, the fishing village where his working-class family has lived for generations, where he is forced to deal with his difficult past.

WONDER BOYS (2000) In this film, starring Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, and Robert Downey Jr., a college professor (Douglas) and award-winning novelist (Downey, Jr.) struggle during a single weekend to pull together a life that has suddenly spiraled out of control. Frances McDormand and Katie Holmes are also great as the female leads.

THE SPANISH PRISONER (1997) When rising corporate star Joe Ross (Campbell Scott) meets wealthy and mysterious Jimmy Dell (Steve Martin) at a tropical resort, it sets off a series of events that leaves the audience shocked and amazed. Dell initially offers to help Ross protect his new business invention, but everything is not as it seems.

This story of corporate espionage will keep you guessing until the very end.

ELSEWHERE (2019) Bruno (Aden Young) is still mourning the death of his wife and still very attached to the home they built together. When his in-laws evict him, he will go to almost any length to find a way back. Also starring Parker Posey.

LABOR DAY (2013) Labor Day stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin as two strangers drawn together under impossible circumstances. What begins as an innocent encounter over a long holiday weekend soon becomes a second chance at love.

the country. Called “Marco Polo,” the group relies on communication among members through video-posting, in a walkie-talkie-like fashion. Bottom line, I don’t think I could have gotten sober without the support of these women, with many of whom I have established extremely close friendships.

I know from my training in social work that it takes about 21 days to form a habit and about 90 days to make it stick. The more time I put in, the more confident I became that I could actually do this sober thing.

Here are some of the things I did in that first month: mani-pedis with my daughter and grandkids, along with almost daily visits; connected daily with my Marco Polo group; made plans to attend the Sober Sis retreat in Fort Worth; and made lunch plans with new sober sisters. I drove to San Francisco with a sober sister to meet another to celebrate our successful 21-day reset.

“Before I stopped drinking, I spent hours on the internet searching to see if I really had a drinking problem—more times than not, with a glass of sauvignon blanc in my hands. And, of course, the internet makes it possible to find a source to support any opinion under the sun, no matter how outrageously unscientific it might be. Just the fact that I was looking on the internet to see how “bad” my drinking was should have been my first clue, right? Nope, because I could always find a reason for concluding that things weren’t THAT bad, whatever “THAT” means.

I ignored that small voice inside that was telling me the truth the whole time; I refused to listen, because I just wasn’t ready. Until I was. Now I listen to that voice every day and I can feel in my head, heart, and body that alcohol has lost its grip on me.

How did it happen? Well, I did something that was in stark contrast to my usual modus operandi when things went south, which was to retreat, wallow in self-loathing, hide in my house, and drink. This time I reached out and asked for help.

I cannot adequately describe the emotional pain I was in for the first three months of my sobriety. My marriage was falling apart. I was so full of guilt and shame that I was physically sick. And in the middle of all this, my brother Bob suffered a massive heart attack and almost died. He was in a coma for weeks and in the hospital for what seemed like forever.

Three things kept me going: my children, my grandchildren, and that voice I heard on my last day one, when I was literally down on my knees in the bedroom of the Lake Tahoe cabin—the voice that quietly, but clearly, said to me, “Peggi, you are done— and you are going to be okay.”

I had to get uncomfortable, doing the things that I never would have seen myself doing before.

It was time to get busy. I totally immersed myself in everything sober by journaling every day, reading books, listening to podcasts, and then journaling some more. When the Sober Sis Reset program started, I had nineteen days of sobriety under my belt and poured myself (irony duly noted) into the daily lessons. The program also included being put into a group of about 25 women from all over

At about 90 days AF (alcohol free; this acronym took some time to get used to), I started posting observations about my new alcohol-free lifestyle on social media. I wrote about the incredibly dumb-ass things I had routinely done to hide my drinking, things no normal drinker would ever consider doing (or would have to do). I also posted observations on how my life was improving as my AF days added up. I had no plans about how long I would continue posting. I was living day-to-day, and the posts just made me feel connected and accountable to my recovery community. Although my family was supportive of my sobriety, they really weren’t into talking about it. I noticed how my writing was resonating with so many others. So, I kept posting. Every day. This book, one I never knew I would write, is the result of all those posts.”

Peggi’s book is raw and courageously written. We get to live in her skin through one of the toughest times in her life as she comes to grip with her overuse of alcohol to control her emotions and deal with the stresses of life. You will see yourself on the pages as she shares her deepest emotions and thoughts about what she experienced and her family as well, as she embarks her journey of recovery.

She bravely walks us through all the ups and downs of getting to the other side of alcohol and does so with wisdom and humor in equal doses. Painful to read at times, one cannot help but feel drawn into her story of love for oneself in the darkest of times and experience the joy as she finds the joy of living without alcohol. Peggi shows us that it takes hard work to get sober and stay there by candidly sharing her personal journal writings of her own journey to sobriety.

A must read. You will find it hard to put down and on it’s pages and in Peggi’s words, you will find the hope and strength to get to the other side of alcohol.

Coping with Grief

We humans mourn the loss of many things: relationships, homes, jobs, pets, and of course, our loved ones. I have experienced every one of these losses and yes, I know what grief is. We each experience this intense emotional pain in our own way, feeling a sense of shock, anger, disbelief, guilt, and overwhelming sadness. We may move from one feeling to another and back again because grief is unpredictable. We need to find ways to help us cope.

SUPPORT FROM WITHIN YOUR CIRCLE Whatever you do, resist the urge to withdraw. It doesn’t matter how “strong” you are, you will find comfort in being with others. Reach out to those who care about you and accept their love, support, and help. Don’t push them away; instead, tell them what you need. It might be help with practical matters, or a welcoming shoulder to lean on. Remember that the people who care about you want to be there for you. While they may not always “have the right words to say,” trust their good intentions.

SUPPORT FROM OUTSIDE OF YOUR CIRCLE Because grief is a personal, yet universal, human experience, being with others who are grieving can be very comforting. They understand; they are trying to cope just as you are. Even if you are “not a joiner,” or if “groups aren’t your thing,” consider a bereavement support group. You can start by simply googling “grief support groups near Winston-Salem NC.” You might also reach out to a local hospice, your own primary care physician, your place of worship, or a funeral home for suggestions.

SELF-CARE While taking care of your physical and emotional needs right now may be difficult, doing so will help you to cope with your grief: • Acknowledge your pain. If you try to avoid your feelings you are likely to prolong your grieving process. If you tell yourself how you “should” feel, you will deny your honest experience. If you allow others to tell you what you “should” feel, or when and how you “should” heal, you will become angry.

In other words, accept the entire array of your emotional experience without judgment or embarrassment.

• Express your feelings “creatively.” After losing her husband, my friend joined an evening art class where she channeled her pain by drawing images of autumn leaves. After losing my beloved papillon, I created a scrapbook of her life.

Perhaps you sew, strum guitar, sing, or write poetry. The how is less important than the fact that you are pursuing a constructive outlet for your feelings.

• Keep to a routine. After the initial days of grieving, it is important to reestablish some normalcy to your days. So, go back to the gym, attend your book club’s chat, or play a round of golf. You will find comfort in the familiar.

• Don’t let yourself go. Neglect won’t help you. Do the best you can to eat right, sleep, exercise, and minimize the use of drugs or alcohol to numb your pain.

MANAGE INTENSE GRIEF IN THE MOMENT A relative refers to it as a “grief meltdown.” When it strikes, it can feel as if you’ve been punched in the stomach. It’s that bad. Experts suggest these simple actions to help you get through it: • Take a few deep breaths to immediately decrease stress and anxiety.

• Take a shower to relieve depression while increasing your energy level.

• Stretch to help you to release tension.

• Drink a glass of water to help deliver oxygen throughout your body and to maintain blood pressure.

Woman’s Club of Winston Salem Transforming Lives in the Community for Over 100 Years

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS In 19th-century America, the expectation of women was to tend to the domestic duties of the home while the men were away at work. But in time, after suffragists first rallied in1848, women began to slowly stake their ground outside the home. Many created women-only clubs where professional and non-professional women gathered to socialize, network, and educate themselves. The first women’s only club formed in 1868 and consisted primarily of NYC women writers - Sorosis (from the Latin word sorror, meaning “sister”).

As times progressed, women’s clubs began emerging all across the country. In 1890, 63 separate women’s clubs came together to officially form the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), dedicated to community improvement through civic engagement, fundraising, and volunteer service.

On May 27, 1902, the North Carolina Federation of GFWC was founded at Salem College in Winston-Salem. Seven clubs formed the nucleus of GFWCNC, three of which resided in Winston-Salem: Sorosis, Round Table, and Embroidery. As the country’s oldest, female-only educational institution in the United States, it was the perfect choice. Twelve years later, under the leadership of Mrs. (Katharine) Howard Rondthaler, the Woman’s Club of Winston Salem (WCWS) was established and doubled its membership from 160 to 321 in the first two years. Interest in joining WCWS continued to soar as evidenced by the headline in the Winston-Salem Sentinel “How Can One Get Membership in the Woman’s Club?” and by 1923 membership reached its peak at 555.

In 1924, the decision was made to purchase the “Cicero Tise House” for $67,500 to serve as the headquarters of the WCWS. Sadly, the economic boom of the Roaring Twenties rapidly gave way to one of the darkest eras in America’s history. Not only did WCWS have to relinquish the national and state federation memberships, but the clubhouse loan proved to be more than active members could carry, too. Thanks to the generosity of 21 community members, the debt was reduced from $23,700 to $6,000 in 1935 and the deed of title was transferred to the Winston-Salem Foundation.

The economic growth of the post-war economy allowed WCWS to once again take up membership in the GFWC-NC and GFWC, as well as make the final payment on the Woman’s Clubhouse in 1945. Decades passed, times changed, and membership dropped to the point that WCWS could no longer meet the necessary expenses of keeping up the clubhouse. In 2000, WCWS made the decision to turn the house over to the Winston-Salem Foundation and they made the decision to sell it; allowing the WCWS to use the interest on the money to give to non-profit organizations…in keeping with WCWS’s objective “to promote and encourage education, literature, the sciences and arts.”

PROMOTING EDUCATION AND AREA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS Early on (1907) GFCW began awarding scholarships and in 1956, GFWC-NC established a permanent scholarship fund. One such scholarship was the Lucy Bramlette Patterson Award for Excellence in Creative Writing (established in 2002). This annual scholarship is given in memory of Mrs. J. Lindsay Patterson of Winston-Salem, the first President of GFWC-NC (1902-1905) and a former Winston-Salem Sentinel columnist whose themes centered on women’s rights and opportunities. How fitting! That same year, a historical highway marker commemorating the centennial of GFWC-NC was erected near Salem College which reads: Volunteer service group promoted suffrage, education, and other social, cultural changes.

GFWC-NC is the “oldest, largest, charitable, service organization of women in North Carolina” so it is no surprise that the members of WCWS, under the leadership of President, Mrs. Phebe Kirkman (2002 – present) voted to use accruing interest from the sale of the clubhouse to establish their first endowed scholarship. The historical significance of Salem College in the formation of GFWCNC made it the logical choice. 2011 marked the 92nd year of WCWS and the completion of a most ambitious project – $100,000 commitment to Salem College.

The following year, a second endowed scholarship was established at Forsyth Technical Community College and by 2021, WCWS had impressively met that financial goal. Additionally, the WCWS contributes yearly to the scholarship fund at UNCSA and supports many important projects in the community such as the Forsyth Public Library, WS Rescue Mission, and Boys and Girls Home of NC. Each month WCWS hosts a luncheon speaker from an area non-profit organization (e.g. Second Harvest Food Bank, Winston-Salem Salvation Army, and Dress for Success) and gives an honorarium to a non-profit of the recipient’s choosing.

On a sunny Friday afternoon in late September, I drove the backroads of Clemmons to take a trip to RayLen Vineyards & Winery, a secluded gem in rural Mocksville. While slowly driving down the one-lane road lined with grape vines to the winery, any work week stress I might have been experiencing slowly dissipated. To soak in the location’s serenity, I snagged a refreshing fruit punch wine slushie to unwind in the late afternoon sun.

Founded by Joe Neely in 1999, RayLen Vineyards & Winery is currently owned by Joe’s wife Joyce, alongside their daughters Rachel and Helen, who also served as inspiration for the winery’s iconic name. During my visit, I spoke with RayLen’s marketing manager, Micah Habershaw, to learn more about the winery’s background and amenities. Having worked at RayLen for almost five years, with years of previous experience working at a vineyard in Virginia, Micah is an omniscient, friendly face whom frequent visitors know and love.

The view overlooking RayLen’s farmlands and vineyards is nearly as impressive as the winery’s vast selection of blends. According to Micah, RayLen’s most beloved wine among customers is the Category 5, a robust red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. After taking a bottle home for myself, I understood why Category 5 was featured on the Today Show as one of the best finds outside of Napa Valley. It might be wise to stock up on bottles of Category 5, as this 2019 blend only improves with age.

As for Micah’s personal favorite, he prefers RayLen’s Petit Verdot, a red blend awarded a gold medal for the 2021 Great American International Wine Competition. For those with a sweeter palette, RayLen’s fruity Riesling won a double gold medal at the NC State Fair, and was named a top sweet wine in San Francisco Chronicle’s Wine Competition. As a red wine novice with a preference for white wines, I was excited to learn about RayLen’s new Fizzy Rosé wine, a sparkling rosé blend and just one flavor in RayLen’s new selection of fizzy sparkling wines. Fizzy sparkling wines are packaged in cans as well as bottles, making them the perfect poolside beverage or tailgate treat.

RayLen has a really great connection to its community, a very strong family presence, and is known for its approachable atmosphere. In fact, RayLen has become a hot spot for retirees, couples in search of a romantic getaway, and book club members looking for the perfect spot to hold regular meetings. The team at RayLen has been able to grow with its regulars for over two decades, and is now able to serve wine to children who were in diapers when the winery was first founded. The location also attracts passersby driving along I-40, many of whom have never visited a winery before - although RayLen is truly a tough act to follow.

With a full-time team of five, the staff at RayLen keeps a busy schedule with daily wine tastings, weddings, and weekend events. Visitors flock to Friday Night Live at RayLen, with live music and food trucks every other Friday night. Visit the winery every other Saturday night for live music and food trucks in the vineyard, and keep your eyes peeled for Jazz Sundays this fall. Surprisingly, RayLen has hosted around 130 events over the last year, ranging from charcuterie and candle-making workshops to sip-and-paint sessions. As a dog-friendly winery, RayLen has also hosted adoption fairs and fundraisers for the Davie County Humane Society. Horticulture students from local community colleges learn a lot from RayLen’s farmers, who play a huge role in cultivating the winery’s highquality products. Recently, RayLen added strawberry plants, and looks forward to incorporating honeybees to the property in the near future.

Since RayLen Vineyards & Winery is a community-minded facility, being climate conscious is also on its long list of priorities. Visitors notice the winery’s large solar panels upon arrival, and are excited for the property’s upcoming installation of electronic vehicle charging stations. In an effort to support local businesses, local artisans and craft makers will be lining the property at RayLen’s Fall Market this November, which will feature up to 100 vendors with food trucks and live music on the lawn. The Plague of Perfectionism

Perfectionism is truly the root of so many awful things.

Think about where it comes from: studies show the root cause is basing your self-worth on your achievements. If your parents were highly critical, rigid, had high expectations, or shamed you – you probably struggle with perfectionism.

perfectionism will help you increase your skill set and make moves in the right – whatever that is – direction.

It’s important here not just to brush off and say “Yeah, yeah I have progress, whatever,” but to actively track that progress and see how far you’ve come.

And that’s just where it comes from! Perfectionism can hold you back immensely. The anxiety that comes in when you’re experiencing moments of perfectionism can be jarring at best and completely stop work and progress at worse. So how do we handle the plague of perfectionism in our lives?

Read on for a path to get you started.

BALANCE THE GOOD AND THE NOT GREAT

SELF-AWARENESS

If you’re never celebrating any of the things that you’re succeeding in – how are you going to get better at the things you’re struggling with? This isn’t encouraging you to be all sunshine and rainbows all the time – this is encouraging you to understand that you need to focus on your “grows” – things that you need to improve on – and your “glows” – the things you do well.

Congrats! You’ve already done the first step: understanding that you don’t want perfectionist tendencies all the time.

Self-awareness and practiced mindfulness can raise your understanding of your perfectionism – and when you understand it, you can not only see when and where it shows up, you can answer one of the biggest perfectionism questions: when does it help me and when does it harm me?

This question seems like it should have a black and white answer – but it doesn’t! Looking at something as helpful or harmful, depending on the situation, is a much easier place to start than trying to get rid of perfectionism altogether. For example, there will be some things I am thrilled to tap into my perfectionism for – and others, it just holds me back.

It’s all about determining if in that specific situation – does perfectionism help what you’re trying to accomplish or do, or does it hold you back and harm progress?

PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS This was one of the hardest things for me to grasp: when you work on something for an extended period, sometimes frustration sets in when you’re not “nailing it” soon.

Tracking progress over perfection in the situations that you’ve determined are not served by

Too often I see people talk about all the things they have to improve on and none of the things they already do well or are seeing improvement on.

This is a trap.

An easy trick: balance this on a one-to-one. Have one grow for every one glow. That way you’re realistic and not tearing yourself down or ignoring all the progress you could be making.

MISTAKES ARE OK This is easier said than done right? A mistake might not feel ok – but what about constructive feedback? If you get some feedback on something that isn’t quite right, how do you respond? If you find yourself getting defensive and making excuses for your feedback, you’re doing it wrong. That feedback is there to HELP you – someone isn’t pointing out your mistakes for the sake of pointing out mistakes!

Next time you get some constructive feedback, do one of two things: say thank you and digest it, or ask questions about it (if you don’t fully understand) then say thank you and digest it.

You don’t have to follow the feedback to a ‘T’ – you should appreciate that someone took the time to try to help you get better at something.

My Self Esteem? I’m All Over It

Let’s be completely frank: getting older and being retired can do a number on a person’s self-esteem. Yes, it’s great to own your own time, and to feel good about having made it to “this stage in life.” But every rose has a few thorns and this particular branch might also include feeling less significant, less capable, and okay, less attractive.

If you’re feeling down just reading this, please don’t “cancel” me. Studies show that self- esteem dips between the age of 60 and 70, but keep reading because there are several powerful things you can do to regain or maintain a positive sense of yourself.

REJECT NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES Be adamant about not buying into the prevailing BS about what it means to be “old,” a “senior citizen,” a “retiree.” YOU decide what is true for you, period.

And while you are at it, take a good look around. Go to a local park, be a voyeur at the Y, or attend an event. You will observe many older people in the swing of things, enjoying life. Let them be your inspiration. Need a science-based nudge?

Consider that Yale School of Public Health found that “encountering positive messages about aging—instead of negative stereotypes about being ‘over the hill’—can enhance the mental and physical well-being of older individuals.”

LOVE WHO YOU ARE RIGHT NOW You’ve gotta love yourself, period. If you focus on what’s not there, or what you’ve lost, this will be a lot harder to do. Challenge yourself to list 12 great things about who you are right now. Go ahead, start with “older and wiser” (because you know you are!) and then keep going. Consider the positive things that people say about you, such as “you’re so much more easy-going now” and add that characteristic to your list. The more authentically-robust your list is, the better!

CHOOSE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE At this point, you know what works for you - and what doesn’t - when it comes to your diet, your physical activity, and your sleep. Yes, the discipline good health requires can be hard, I know. So, aim for success instead of perfection, missing the mark, and then feeling worse about yourself. Start with a small goal for each of these key areas. Make sure that it is something you are willing to commit to and reasonably confident that you can achieve. Mark your successes and, little by little, add another goal.

STAY CONNECTED We are social creatures by nature, and this is not the time to pull away from engaging with others. In fact, people who have supportive, loving relationships with friends and family experience higher self-esteem and overall happiness.

Whether it’s joining a group where you live, getting involved in your church, or just inviting a neighbor to join you for coffee, take that first step.

Then, commit to one or more forms of regular contact because it is the continuity that creates the connection.

Making a Difference in Our Community & Around the World

The Rotary Club of Clemmons, part of Rotary District 7690, was chartered in 1993 with the hard work of 10 local individuals and now numbers close to 70 members. Rotary International has over 1.2 million members worldwide and is present in nearly every country.

Many of us have heard of Rotary, but what exactly do they do locally and internationally?

AT ITS HEART, SERVICE ABOVE SELF

The motto of the 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide is ‘Service Above Self,’ and that exemplifies the group’s spirit of giving and working for others. The Rotary Club of Clemmons actively supports a number of charitable organizations and activities both within our community and across the world. Organizations like the Clemmons Food Pantry, the Boy Scouts, Cancer Services, the Salvation Army, and MakeA-Wish foundation have received gifts of cash and service, raised and coordinated by the Clemmons Rotarians; members are also tutors as Southwest Elementary school, and chaperones accompanying WWII veterans to Washington, DC to visit the WWII Memorial for the Triad Flight of Honor.

Bruce Bullings, President of Rotary Club of Clemmons, said, “This past year with COVID, our members were able to partner with the Food Bank to distribute food boxes to over 300 families in need, supplying them with much needed food for the holiday season. Clemmons Rotarians have a real soft spot for kids. Each year we host a high school speech competition where students raise awareness of the perils of drug and alcohol abuse. In the summer, we send dozens of kids to Camp Hanes, and provide college scholarships to graduating seniors from West Forsyth High School. We annually host kids for a holiday dinner and tour of the Tanglewood Festival of Lights, and sponsor the leaders of the future at the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference.” But the giving of the Rotary Club of Clemmons reaches across the world to help others, too.

“Each member comes to Rotary with a skill, talent, and love. Our financial persons, John Crouch, CPA, and Teresa Lindsay, CPA, help guide our financial well-being as well as keep a watchful eye on our profits and expenditures. Our past Presidents and the Board of Directors, whom I turn to for guidance due to the ever-changing thoughts ahead to create a sound foundation for upward and forward movement of the Rotary Club of Clemmons, are great sources of support and knowledge. Bill McClain, keeps us abreast of the underserved communities in our city and how best to help meet their needs. Don Timmons has a heart for veterans and works tirelessly to aid veterans through ‘veteran coffees’ and sharing information to better their way of life. Purity Ruchugo’s SISTER2SISTER has been an instrumental part of our club for many years uplifting the women and children of Kenya, while providing a safe haven in the region.”

As 2021 comes to an end, The Rotary of Clemmons has upcoming events scheduled for the community. “On November 7th, TOAST-The Totally Outstanding Awesome Stroll Through Tanglewood, is coming up with food trucks, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Disney characters, music, vendors all with a great stroll through 1.5 miles of the lights of Tanglewood. Our effort, Hand n Hand, is a partnership with YMCA of NWNC, GIDE, and AGAPE Faith Church, where we pick up 300 kinds from underserved communities and feed them dinner, provide a gift bag, and ride them through the Tanglewood Festival of Lights. We’re looking forward to 2022 and continuing to give back,” Bruce said.

“We’ve helped build a school in Jamaica and a drinking well at an orphanage in Kenya.

Through the Saving Little Hearts of Nicaragua program, we’ve provided assistance to children requiring open heart surgery and wheelchairs to orphanages. We are also strong supporters of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio,” Bruce commented. It seems that each member of the Rotary of Clemmons has a heart for a special group of people and they join to reach those individuals.

It seems that over the last year or so, everything has changed, especially our circle of interaction with others and this has been true for those in Rotary as well. “I’m very grateful for those in Rotary and how together we amplify our efforts, but over the past 20 months, my gratitude for Rotary has grown. During quarantine, our networks shrunk to mainly our families and some co-workers; Rotarians had another network to turn to for purpose and social interaction. Rotary had to evolve and pivot; meetings were virtual, yet we stayed connected. I became a Rotarian because I wanted to give something back to my community, I continue to be a Rotarian because it gives me so much more,” stated Bruce.

A Fresh Look at Abundance

I am plagued with a persistent hankering for Lay’s potato chips. Fortunately, I can usually reel in the urge to dive into that yellow bag of lusciousness. But coveting my friend’s PERFECT hair is another story - it’s me running amok on the dangerous precipice of envy. Maybe I’m being dramatic, but I don’t want to covet anything or envy anyone. What I want is to appreciate every bit of the unique abundance I already have.

PRACTICES THAT CULTIVATE ABUNDANCE

Abundance isn’t measured in net worth, house size, titles, degrees, public adulation, or, alas, the condition of one’s hair.

Actually, it’s a mindset and a perceptual choice that allows us to: • Perceive more opportunities than limitations in the life we live • Appreciate what we already have • Avoid comparing ourselves with others • Embrace change because we believe we will be fine

Consider all that you have Go ahead, challenge yourself to list 100 people, experiences, things, insights, lessons for which you are grateful. Or, start at A and end at Z. Example: a great Apartment; mastering Zoom. However you get there, you will be amazed at how much abundance fills your life.

If that isn’t a recipe for abundant inner peace, I don’t know what is. But how do we get there?

Spruce up your thinking Consciously recall the challenges you’ve conquered and the support that is always available to you from, well, you decide: a higher power, your family, friends, the universe. Tell or remind yourself that you are supremely capable of living an abundant life.

Stop comparing!

This might be a deeply-entrenched habit that is hard to break.

Remember that there will always be people who have more of this or more of that, than you. But “more” isn’t the measure or the goal.

How often do you hear people say that constantly striving for more and better has made them miserable? Spend time with the idea that every human being experiences abundance in a unique way.

Remember that you get to define what meaningful abundance looks like for you. Tip: Take your cues from your “A to Z” exercise!

Move in the direction of the life you want The pandemic caused many of us to reconsider the life we really want. It’s personal, and it should be. It’s also fluid, not static. It takes courage, maybe even a measure of “bad-assness” to put a stake in the ground for the life you want. You may find yourself procrastinating or questioning your ability to do so. I get that.

Start with one area of your life and create a greater sense of abundance there. For example, let’s say that your cup runneth over with material things and you feel suffocated by all of that “stuff.” Maybe you decide that you can create a greater sense of abundance by clearing out and living more simply. That idea turns the conventional notion of abundance on its head, but it makes perfect sense. With one “win” under your belt, move to the next opportunity.

Up your generosity Some say it’s better to give than to receive. Or, that the greatest beneficiary of gifting is the gifter. Something shifts from the inside when we open up to others in a spirit of generosity.

My mom was a materially-poor woman by most American standards. But she lived every day of her life with enormous generosity. She gave from her heart as well as from her meager pocketbook, believing that there would always, somehow, be enough. Because she had defined abundance on her own terms, she was absolutely right.

Annual Craft Village: 51 Years and Counting

Just in time for holiday home decorating, Davie Craft Association is celebrating its 51st Annual Craft Village this year on Friday, November 12th, and Saturday, November 13th. With a new location at Davie Parks & Recreation, familiar to some as the former Davie High School Gymnasium, Davie Craft Association is excited to be hosting over 50 local artisans and vendors, baked goods, food trucks, and live music to keep the tradition alive.

With 51 years under its belt, the Annual Craft Village is essential to Davie County residents and craft-lovers of all kinds. In 1970, the Davie Craft Association was founded and sponsored by the County of Davie, and was run by individual crafters and board members. Due to its popularity in the community, crafters and board members continued Davie Craft Association operations after the County no longer sponsored it. With the organization’s meetings previously being held in the National Armory in Davie County, the organization was asked to move locations after the Armory was needed by the National Guard following the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.

Since then, Davie Craft Association has called the B.C. Brock Gymnasium on Main Street its home. With the Annual Craft Village being held in a larger facility at Davie Parks & Recreation this year, the extra space will allow for even more vendors than in previous years. The organization is very pleased with the layout of this year’s venue, making for an easier entry process for visitors and a well-designed floor space for vendors.

How do local artisans sign up to participate in the craft show? To outsiders, the competition is stiffer than it may seem. In fact, prospective vendors must first present their designs and crafts to a jury of eight members of the Davie Craft Association for inspection prior to being invited as a vendor for the Craft Village. The craft show’s jury ensures that all crafts and products sold at the event are high quality and authentic to the artisan, rather than being resold by a major retailer. Interested

in presenting your crafted goods to the Davie Craft Association to become a vendor at this year’s Annual Craft Village? Follow Davie Craft Association on Facebook and send a message to find out more information on how to get involved.

Each year, the Craft Village sees approximately 1,200 visitors in just two days. Every $1 entrance fee is donated to the Retired Teachers Program of Davie County, which adds to teachers’ retirement funds.

Davie County teachers collect fees at the door, in addition to running the bakery inside the event. At the bakery, expect to find delicious cakes, cookies, pies, jams, and more made by participating local vendors available for purchase.

Marvel at the stunning ornaments, handbags, jewelry, florals, soaps, and crocheted and knitted wearable items for sale. At the end of the craft show, all vendors donate five percent of their earnings to the Davie Craft Association, which funds a scholarship presented to a Davie High School senior each year who shows a particular interest in art-based or designfocused career paths.

In addition to baked goods and crafts, visitors can enjoy live music by local artists and dancers. Food trucks will also be making an appearance at the Annual Craft Village, so bring your appetite along for the ride.

Doors are open from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12th. On Saturday, November 13th, event hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Davie Parks & Recreation is located at 151 Southwood Drive, Mocksville, NC. Parking at the event is free of charge, with only a $1 entrance fee at the door. TASK #5 Money Fakers

Dollars in the wrong direction are never a good look. Money coming in will help you achieve your goals but make sure each transaction is earned from the offers you want to be known for. What you are selling should be priced to help you grow and become profitable while also feeling aligned with what you want to be selling! Stop working on things that aren’t getting you anywhere just because it’s money for money’s sake. Focus on creating offers and having prices that are clearly making an impact.

There is power in prioritizing! Remember, you create goals as unique as your business, so what you put on your plate should be just as unique and purposeful. Don’t waste time on empty tasks that aren’t moving you forward.

This month take inventory of everything you are doing with your time by creating an average to-do list for one week. Include every task you can think of and get it all down in front of you. Challenge yourself to look for empty tasks and identify which of the five types mentioned above you are most susceptible to.

You have recently

BY MEGAN TAYLOR finished a wonderful book and are wondering what to read next. You want something similar to what you have just read, maybe keeping with that novel’s genre, author, etc., but don’t know where to start. Let me introduce you to the concept of read alike books. These novels are similar to others in content, theme, and genre. They can also be T.V. shows, movies, authors, or celebrities that resemble the characteristics of a book’s plot. For example, if you enjoyed reading The Hunger Games, you may like the Divergent series. For this month’s “Writers Who Read,” here are my top read alikes for popular book choices.

If you like author and YouTuber John Green, then you may like The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

If you like the British drama Downton Abbey, then you may like Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christi

Author John Green may be best known for his YouTube content, such as the educational channel Crash Course series which focuses on teaching humanities and science courses to kids. However, he is also well known for his book, The Fault in Our Stars, and his podcast, The Anthropocene Reviewed.

Green’s style of writing, talking, and unique perspective are closely mirrored in the novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Author Stephen Chbosky brings the book’s main character Charlie to life through his high school experience. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age novel, written through Charlie’s letters. These letters provide a hilarious and contemporary perspective of trying to live life and run from it all at the same time. Readers are given little details to where Charlie lives, who the letters are being sent to, etc., However, readers do develop empathy for Charlie as he navigates new friends, drama, first dates, and new experiences that high school brings.

Set in the early 1900s, Downton Abbey channels the lives, challenges, and changes of the Crawley family as aristocrats in England. The program also gives insight into the lives of the servants of the house and the upstairsdownstairs interactions. If you are a fan of Downton Abbey and are looking for your next read, try Murder on the Orient Express. This classic novel is set on the Orient Express, traveling from Stamboul (also referred to as Istanbul), Turkey to London. Along with an ensemble of passengers, including a wealthy American and Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, travelers on the Orient Express are quickly thrown into a mystery when the wealthy American is found murdered at night.

Detective Poirot sets out to solve the case; however, the fellow thirteen passengers don’t make it easy as each is harboring a secret of their own.

If you like To Kill a Mockingbird, then you may like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith Two classics that people should add to their reading lists. Much like To Kill a Mockingbird, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a young coming-ofage novel set in 1912. Eleven-year-old Francie Nolan lives in the slums of Williamsburg, an area in Brooklyn, New York, with her family. Her neighborhood is culturally diverse, money is tight, but love is abundant and life centers around a tree in the courtyard. This tree, the Tree of Heaven, grows under any circumstance and it doesn’t matter whether it has been watered or not. Soon, the tree becomes a symbol for the neighborhood and Francie’s life. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a beautiful novel that connects family, growing up, and learning to overcome whatever challenges life throws at you.

Read alike books are the perfect extensions to novels you have recently read and loved. They can also be additions to stories you have watched or heard from podcasts, YouTubers, and more. It is always a good opportunity to branch out of your traditional genres and plots, but sometimes it is nice to stay in the comfort of our favorites.

Stay Young at Heart

If I asked you what you “should” do to stay healthy in your later years, you would probably say: eat right, stay active, exercise, manage my weight and my health, moderate or eliminate habits like smoking and consuming alcohol. And you would be right. We’ve heard this advice for a very long time, even if we sometimes struggle to heed it. Well, now you can add one more element to the prescription: stay young at heart. It’s not a big surprise, right? We know folks who have clocked some years and still have a spring in their step, a smile on their face and an enthusiasm that doesn’t quit. They’re not high on drugs. They’re high on life. They are also “onto something.”

The Harvard Health letter recently reported that older people who felt three or more years younger than their chronological age had a lower death rate than those who felt their age or older. Another study reported that those with a positive outlook about their future and their ability to function effectively lived the longest. Those who regarded aging as “no big deal” were able to “climb stairs, do housework, work full-time, go out socially, and do other activities associated with younger people.” These folks lived 7.5 years longer than those with less positive ideas about aging.

Here’s what I love about this: How we choose to think about getting older is on us. And when we choose to think in more positive ways, that shows up in our actions and, studies suggest, our longevity.

Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Ronald D. Siegel explains that, “Feeling younger or older itself seems to have an effect on our health… when people see themselves as old, they’re more likely to abandon physical challenges which feel difficult, such as, ‘I don’t think I should ski any more, I’m an old man.’

When people feel younger psychologically, even

if physical exercise is challenging, they’re more likely to pursue it… if we feel old, we’re likely to treat food with an ‘I won’t live much longer, I might as well enjoy this’ attitude which could lead us to eat unhealthfully. If we feel young, we may have more of a futureorientation that will lead us to eat with future health in mind.”

I don’t need more proof that staying young at heart begins with cultivating a younger state of mind. Here’s a great place to start: Monitor your thoughts and mind your words. If you find yourself frequently thinking about and talking about the past, shift gears.

Come back to the present moment and look for the good in the here and now. Or think about something in the near future that you are looking forward to.

Challenge yourself. It doesn’t matter how, but it’s important that you don’t allow yourself to get stuck in a rut of repetition. Try something that’s new, different, and maybe even outside of your comfort zone.

Take a baby step in this direction and, well, who knows?

Focus on something meaningful. After retirement, people who retire often focus initially on pleasure and excitement because now they are free! But that wanes and is replaced with a desire for more meaning and purpose. Consider volunteering, starting a long-term project, or even becoming the gardener you always dreamed of.

Set a few goals. If you feel aimless and have nothing to work toward, it is unlikely that you’ll feel young at heart or high on life. We all need something that stimulates and challenges us. And when we make progress, the sense of accomplishment is its own reward.

Amanda Benedict is the owner and designer of Blue Jean Boutique. “After more than 12 years in retail, I left my job to launch my own t-shirt and opened my own boutique,” said Amanda. “We just celebrated our one-year anniversary. I have been able to grow this business enough over the last year, and we are currently searching for a vehicle to launch a mobile boutique this fall.” Amanda has a bachelor’s degree in fine art from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “I’m a single mom with two young kids who love to go on adventures with me,” said Amanda. “When I’m not busy with the kids, I love to paint and work on new designs for the Blue Jean Collection.”

Kristal Provencher is the owner and creator of Daily Comfort by Kristal, natural skincare for the soul. “I went to the Elizabeth Grady school of Esthetics in Boston and earned my certification in 2011,” said Kristal. “As a little girl, I loved nothing more than spending my time with my Italian grandmother collecting herbs from her garden and enjoying the encouragement she gave me to create my own recipes. So, I suppose it was inevitable that one day I would take those tools and apply them to my background in skincare to create my own all-natural skincare line. REVEREND DR. LINDA P. MCRAE Reverend Dr. Linda P. McRae is the President/CEO of HOPE Counseling & Consulting Services, Inc. (HOPE), a clinical practice that provides programs and services that seek to promote hope and healing. HOPE opened in Winston-Salem in September of 2013. Some of the services that HOPE provides are mental health and behavioral health services, outpatient substance use disorder treatment, DWI/DOT services and mental health services in WS/FCS. She has degrees from Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, A&T and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro as well as a professional degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation. She is married to Rev. Ronald McRae (COO of HOPE Counseling & Consulting), and they have a blended family of eight children (four boys and four girls), six of which have graduated from college. In her spare time, Linda enjoys cooking and spending time with her 11 grandchildren.

Holes’ In My Shoes…A Cardboard Secret

To understand“Holes in My Shoes,” I have to bring you back to the year 1950. I’m seven years old, the middle boy of two other boys in the family. My parents both work; we have a live-in-maid from Poland and a fenced house located on a street corner in a small town. My elementary school was two blocks away; a new junior high school was a ten-minute bike ride from my house, where I attended as a ninth-grader. My high school was in the neighboring town where I took a bus to attend the last three years of high school. Both my brothers attended the same schools; my older brother was the smart one in the family.

Not that I understood the term middle class at age seven, but I guess that term would best describe our family.

My father would change cars for newer models periodically; he joined a golf and country club, and on special occasions, he would take the family there for dinner. Both parents’ families were from Brooklyn and for that very reason, we often found ourselves visiting relatives on Sunday. Those trips were the best of times when it came to family outings.

Because of the age difference between my brothers, we didn’t have much in common.

I was closest in age to my older brother…a three-year gap, whereas a six-year difference existed with my younger brother. Looking back now, it may explain why we have so little in common today. I said earlier that my older brother was the smart one. After high school, he was accepted to a toprated college…he dropped out two years later, got married and went to work for my parents. When I finished high school, I chose a junior college to attend, graduated, and transferred to a four-year state university.

Earning a degree in education, I went on to spend thirty-three years in one public school system.

Ok, I’m way ahead of myself…let me bring you back to 1950.

Although I have not lived in that corner house for some time, I can tell you everything about it, especially my bedroom on the second floor.

My bedroom, shared with my older brother, was down the hall from the maid’s room.

The only thing separating where I slept in my room and my parent’s bedroom was a five-inch wall.

Why is that important to know? That wall became a lifetime of lessons acquired that carried me into adulthood on how to deal with money, marital disputes, and a lesson in that as much as a seven-year-old wanted to help his parents resolve their money and marital problems, he couldn’t.

There were far too many nights while lying in bed that I heard them arguing…whether it was his time at the country club, losing at playing cards or at the racetrack, their business, or money issues in general. There was a growing sense that I could do nothing to help them. I was too young to work and couldn’t tell them that I was tired of going to bed crying after hearing them argue.

I decided that the only way I could help was when I first discovered holes in my shoes. They weren’t large holes but ones that would eventually grow in size and require repair… and that would cost money. I fixated on what needed to be done and came up with an ingenious and secret solution. I put small pieces of cardboard inside each shoe…problem solved until the holes got bigger and it rained. No matter how many times it rained or the size of the holes increased, I had another piece of cardboard in reserve. I took pride in saving my parents money and keeping my cardboard secret from them.

I don’t remember when my parents actually found out about the holes, the cardboard, or why I chose not to tell them my reasons for doing what I was doing. My guess is that our maid told them. My wife told me years later that my father once approached her and asked her what shoes I was wearing when we first

went out. She responded that she had not noticed and asked him why the question.

He responded saying that if it was his brown shoes, then those would be the ones that had holes in them and with cardboard stuffed inside to keep the rain out.

Lessons acquired at an early age are hard to break…some take longer than others. As for the cardboard in my shoes, that stopped after my parents found out. As for resolving marital disputes, that is not the job of children. When it comes to money disputes, that has taken me longer to address…it is still a work in progress.

Bearing Witness: The Gift of Self

This holiday season, many of us will “gather, celebrate and gift” with an extra heaping of joy. Travelling maskless (we hope!) to grandmother’s house and beyond, we’re feeling generous toward one another. Perhaps the gatherings will be larger, the presents more abundant.

Or maybe instead, our experience of the pandemic has reinforced that time together is the greatest gift of all, and we’re committed to making it meaningful, more intimate.

I have a bold suggestion: Make bearing witness your most precious gift.

In psychological terms, bearing witness refers to sharing our experiences with others, often in the communication of traumatic experiences. On the receiving end of a person bearing witness, a person feels empathy, support, and often a sense of catharsis. That’s because their experience is acknowledged as existing, as true. Zen teacher Jules Shuzen Harris explains that in bearing witness, you “become intimate with whatever is.”

Because the willingness to “become intimate with whatever is” is a gift of self, why reserve it for extreme or traumatic experiences? We can bear witness at any time and with anyone. If you’ve had a ‘tween or teen in the passenger seat while you’re driving, you may have noticed that they start talking. And the longer you steered that vehicle and kept your lips zipped, the longer they talked.

Most likely, you were bearing witness.

Or maybe, out of nowhere, a friend speaks from that deep place and you sense that she needs to be heard. So, you put a lid on your ideas and reactions, resist the urge to jump in with a parallel story, and simply listen from a place of deep receptivity.

Dr. Rose Kumar, founder of the Ommani Center for Integrative Medicine explains that, “Bearing witness is a gift we can offer each other at any time. In a world that is moving at warp speed, it is easy to forget that we matter… bearing witness is a sacred act.

It even changes the one who bears witness. It deepens and fortifies one’s soul. It makes one trustworthy.” That’s it, isn’t it?

We trust those who witness us by making themselves whollypresent to us.

Maybe the pandemic taught us a little more about how priceless our connection to others truly is.

Maybe it opened up a bigger, more receptive heart space within.

Maybe it made us a little more ready and willing to bear witness to each other’s experience.

BEARING WITNESS: A THREE STEP PROCESS Identify who needs you. If you are reconnecting with loved ones in person this season, you may have a sense of who may need you right now. You might reach out to this person with a simple “I just wanted to let you know that I am here for you if you want to talk.” Or, you may find yourself in conversation with someone and sense that your purpose in that moment is to bear witness to them.

Be there and be empty. Focus on letting go of your reactions, opinions, and “stuff.” Bearing witness is not about you, period. Focus on listening and learning about the other person’s truth instead of judging or “fixing.” As Shuzen Harris reminds us, “Bearing witness requires a kind of mental and physical surrender to the situation to allow it to fully enter into your consciousness.”

Serve the situation. After taking them and “it” in for a time, ask yourself this question: “How can I most acknowledge this person and their truth?”

Give a priceless gift this season and every season: bear witness to someone in your life.

Conversations with Your BFF How many times did you hear, ‘You better check that attitude’ when you were a teenager? But if you think about it, no matter your age, we all have an attitude. We all approach life, people, or situations with a certain way we are going to handle it. Since we all have an attitude, good or bad, how important is a good attitude in a successful life? I am so glad you asked!

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING AND A BAD ONE CAN REALLY IMPACT YOUR SUCCESS There are many factors that determine our success in life and some of those factors are out of our control, however, attitude is within our control. You have probably met people who feel like there has been some sort of a force field that has held them back their entire lives - roadblocks that were never surmountable.

It’s a pretty good bet that the force field is their own attitude.

WHAT IS ATTITUDE? Attitude is an all-encompassing term that defines your outlook and approach to life. It includes your inner thoughts and outward expressions. In the end, attitude determines everything you say and do - and what you say and do determines your success.

Attitude determines whether or not you pursue the opportunities you are given. Those with a pessimistic or self-defeating attitude won’t pursue the opportunities that are placed in front of them, thinking that failure is the only possible outcome. Those with a positive, hopeful attitude, though, will aggressively pursue every opportunity they are given, always entering it with an attitude that success will come. Attitude is part of a cycle. Think about it like this: those with a negative attitude are caught in a cruel cycle where poor attitude leads to failure and each failure leads to a poorer attitude.

For those with a positive attitude, this cycle is just the opposite.

HOW DOES ATTITUDE AFFECT YOUR LIFE? Attitude also determines how you relate to other people, and your relations with other people are one of the driving factors in whether or not you are successful. People are drawn towards those with positive, friendly, and inspiring attitudes. Think about it…don’t you prefer to work with positive people? When there’s a ‘Debbie Downer’ in the office, people tend to keep their distance. You’ll get more people on board any idea you have with a positive attitude.

IS TALKING TO YOURSELF OK? We all have a choice as to how we talk to ourselves. We can choose an inner dialogue of self-encouragement and self-motivation, or we can choose one of self-defeat and self-pity. Each of us encounters hard times, hurt feelings, heartache, and physical and emotional pain. The key here is to realize it’s not what happens to you that matters; it’s how you choose to respond. Positive self-talk pumps up your self-esteem and confidence and negative dialogue with yourself produces low self-esteem and stress.

ONE BAD APPLE DOES SPOIL THE WHOLE BUNCH Recent studies have looked at what happens when just one so-called ‘bad apple,’ a person demonstrating negativity and conflict, was introduced to an otherwise highlyfunctioning, productive group of people.

The results were internal conflicts that tended to spread up through every level of the group, decreasing the group’s ability to grow and adapt in a positive way. Just one person can cripple an entire group of people.

MAKING A U-TURN TO A BETTER ATTITUDE The only thing worse than having a bad attitude for ten years is having one for ten years and one day, but you can change and here’s how: • Repeat positive affirmations to yourself.

• Concentrate on smiling often during the day. It makes you and others feel better.

• Make exercise a priority for not only your body, but for your mental health.

• Watch your words and carefully choose positive thoughts to share with others.

Our lives aren’t a dress rehearsal; we only get one shot at this life and there’s no sense wasting it in bitterness and self-defeat. Instead, focus on building a positive, confident, and inspiring attitude. It’s guaranteed to add to and improve your own life and the lives of everyone you come in contact with, personally and professionally.
