Many beauty trends and styles have evolved over time, and for Melanie Zebron at Alkali, history is a huge inspiration for her work. She loves studying the past and analyzing how trends are reinvented throughout the years. It helps her create unique and incredible looks for her guests.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY AND HOW DOES IT TIE INTO YOUR LOVE OF HISTORY?

I honestly can’t remember a time when I didn’t love hair. When I was little, I would constantly beg my cousins to let me play with their hair. During college at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), I basically turned my dorm room into a mini hair salon for when my friends wanted to go out for a night on the town.

I majored in history, and I’ve always had a strong interest in beauty and fashion from the 50s to present day. Entering this industry was a natural step for me. I started my journey in 2014, as a makeup artist for Sephora.

In 2020, I completed cosmetology school and have been happily doing hair at Alkali ever since.

HOW DO YOU PERSONALIZE SERVICES FOR EACH CLIENT?

I personalize my services by learning about each client’s lifestyle. This way, I can make sure that the look they want fits into their daily routine. I think this is the key to clients really loving their hair.

For example, if someone is a wash and air dry kind of person, a high maintenance look that requires a styling commitment may not be the best fit for them. By getting to know my clients, I can explain why a specific look isn’t a good choice and recommend alternatives that are better suited for their routine. Ultimately, I want my clients to love their hair. But if you walk out with a look that you’re unable or unwilling to style at home, you won’t be 100% happy, no matter how beautiful the color or cut is. I work with my clients to ensure this doesn’t happen.

I’m also an advocate for product education. I educate my clients on which products are best for their hair type, color, and/or haircut, and

show them how to use the products to style their hair at home, when I’m not there to style it for them.

WHAT’S YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERVICE?

My favorite color service is balayage because it provides such soft, yet stunning looks that are also low maintenance. I also love razor cutting. It gives such fun texture and movement to the hair.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR AT-HOME HAIR CARE?

Invest in a good round brush and blow dryer. You’ll get noticeably better results when blow drying at home. If you color your hair, shampoo in cool water, it’ll help preserve your color!

OUTSIDE OF HAIR AND HISTORY, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN?

I love baking, cooking, vegetable gardening, and traveling. I’m also a huge sports fan—especially when it comes to Duke basketball.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE YOUR CURRENT AND POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW?

I have recently been bitten by the travel bug! I didn’t have the chance to visit a lot of different places growing up, so I love hearing about my clients’ favorite travel experiences and trip recommendations—good food and good shopping is always a must!

I also love watching so many of my close friends be total rockstars as moms.

Toddlerhood looks tough—but also like so much fun. You all make it look easy (even though I know it’s not), and it’s such a joy to witness your love and energy in action.

Another exciting thing this May—I’m gaining a mother-in-law! Gavin’s mom is just the coolest. She’s super down-toearth, absolutely loves her family, and is such a fun part of our gym community.

Everyone loves hanging out with her—I feel so lucky that I get to call her both family and a friend.

And yes—May is WEDDING MONTH! Gavin and I are getting married on May 31st, and I truly can’t wait. When planning, we both agreed we wanted the day to be low-stress, simple, and meaningful.

Our ceremony will be small and private, shared with just our immediate families, but don’t worry—we’ve got a fun, casual celebration planned afterward with all our people. Definitely not your typical wedding reception, and that’s exactly how we like it. I’m sure we’ll be sharing a few sneak peeks from the big day on our @forsythmags social media, so make sure you’re following along!

touch when he had a moment. That was the beginning of my journey with Encore Bank. Keeping It Real LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD I’m just laying it all out from the get-go: I hit sixty a few weeks ago!

Even hearing my inner voice say it sends shockwaves down my spine.

If you’re not there, it sounds ancient. (Baby, trust me when I tell you it comes fast and furious!)

If you have passed it, the angst sounds ridiculous. Just remember, I’ve never been here!

To say I struggled into this birthday is putting it mildly. I never imagined myself at 60! It SOUNDS and SEEMS so…let’s just say…“mature.”

But, after I laid my head to the pillow a few nights before that significant day, I sat straight up in my bed at 3:00 a.m.! It frustrated me that I couldn’t doze back to sleep. The longer I lay wide-eyed, the more I recognized God was dealing with me AND the crazy talk inside my head! (You realize, don’t you, that He overhears our every thought?)

Through my mind’s eye, God ran a reel recalling layer upon layer of blessing. He reminded me of ALL THE THINGS I enjoy now that prove far grander than anything I ever dreamed.

A THANKSGIVING PARADE of memories danced right through the darkness! The clock struck 5:30 a.m. by the time I recounted all the good things.

I sipped coffee against the fatigue yet felt overwhelmed with great gratitude and even excitement about the future. My distorted perspective truly transformed overnight.

It’s foolish to lament getting older when God’s absolute goodness has chased me down every

single day of my living! SO MANY situations sought to bury me, yet God used those very experiences to exponentially multiply my strength and resilience. Yes, I got knocked down, but I never stayed down!

I thank my JESUS that I’m healthy and wealthy in all the ways that matter most. I’ve traveled the world to see the grandest and the lowliest.

I’ve witnessed enough to know I have what the grandest cannot buy and what the lowliest cannot even imagine. I have everything I need and, truly, everything I want! My God is better to me than I deserve!

So, I’m coming out of the huddle ready to leave it all on the field in this final quarter of living. I know who I am, why I’m here and where I’m going.

God has given me the enormous privilege of getting where people are, feeling their struggles, then helping them rise from the ashes.

He allows me to help folks find their truest selves and their deepest purpose. From there, as every part of their being awakens, they truly find their reason for running this race!

What about you? Do you know WHO you are? Do you know WHY you’re here? Do you know WHERE you’re headed?

These questions keep us up at night but are really not as difficult as they seem. Just look in the right place…to the ONE who created you, pulsates purpose into your very being, then leads you to your forever home!

Don’t waste another year, not even another day! You were made for greatness, and it’s time to start living your best purpose! In the words of a good friend, “Don’t die old! Die empty!”

I know I’ve got SO MUCH MORE to accomplish for God’s Great Name! He’s dreamed BIG for me, and I’m leaving it all on the field. I’ll slide into home base KNOWING my life here mattered.

I’ve GOT to! My generations depend on it! The generations of those I lead depend upon it! OUR generations are entirely too important to settle for less!

May it be said of us as we cross our finish line, “I glorified You on earth [LORD] by completing down to the last detail what You assigned me to do.” (John 17:4) THIS is success!

Don’t start “this year” or “this month.” START TODAY! There’s no one like you. Make sure you leave your mark because…you’ve got one to leave!

Easing Oral Surgery with Trusted Care

hen it comes to a positive dental experience, there’s nothing more important to patients than a solid relationship with professionals who are firmly focused on personalized care.

As a multi-disciplinary practice that includes preventive treatment, restorative options, pediatrics, orthodontics and oral surgery, University Dental Associates got its start in Winston-Salem in 1997. While most oral surgeries can be completed in less than an hour, the mere mention of surgery always evokes a few anxious moments – one reason Matthew Schiavone, DMD, MD feels the patient/provider relationship is so important.

“I will take as much time as the patient needs to provide information and calm their fears,” he explains. “For some patients, it’s only five minutes; for some, it’s as much as 45 minutes.

I take time to answer all their questions — and I’d like to think they leave here remembering a positive experience, while gaining trust in me as their provider.”

Dr. Schiavone joined the practice in December of 2023, admiring their focus on patient comfort and the camaraderie of the other dentists. “It’s very appealing to patients,” he adds, noting the entire team collaborates well together. “We can offer streamlined care where, if there’s a concern, I can reach out to another dentist quickly.”

With oral surgery, there can often be misconceptions based on previous experiences where a patient felt traumatized, and Dr. Schiavone makes gaining trust with new patients a priority.

“Typically, pain is their biggest fear,” he shares. “Sometimes a patient comes in with an immediate need for treatment, and we do offer conscious and deep sedation if necessary. But, it’s ideal if the process can begin with an initial consultation to discuss fears or concerns beforehand, where we work to build a relationship.”

The practice of oral surgery includes conditions such as issues with wisdom teeth, facial pain and misaligned jaws, as well as treatment for accident victims with facial injuries, reconstructive and dental implant surgery, and care for patients with tumors or cysts of the jaws.

For Dr. Schiavone, wisdom teeth extractions, dental implants and bone grafting procedures are the most common surgeries he performs. He is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and graduated summa cum laude from the College of William and Mary before earning his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his MD from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where he graduated with honors. Dr. Schiavone completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Rutgers University Hospital. Also conversant in Spanish, Dr. Schiavone is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Simply put, concentration risk is having too much of your net worth tied up in one investment. The investment could be an individual stock – we see this a lot with equity compensated folks that receive stock options.

Another example could be real estate which is also common.

At Marzano Capital Group, our general rule of thumb is to have no more than 10-15% of your net worth in any one investment or asset class. This can be a challenge as everyone’s situation is different, but here are three ways you can help mitigate wealth concentration in our opinion: 1. Take the emotion out of it! We have seen many folks become attached to a certain company stock and subject themselves to more risk than they really should in our opinion.

Tiramisu Crepe Cake with Espresso Mascarpone Whipped Cream

Tiramisu crepe cake is thin vanilla crepes layered with an espresso-infused mascarpone whipped cream and cocoa powder for a deliciously unique showstopper dessert!

Servings: 15 Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

For the Vanilla Crepes: 1 ½ cups Whole Milk 3 large Eggs 2 T Olive Oil ¼ cup Granulated Cane Sugar 1 T Vanilla Bean Paste 1 ½ cups All Purpose Flour Note: Double the recipe for a tall crepe cake.

For the Espresso Mascarpone Whipped Cream: 12 oz. Mascarpone Cheese, softened 2 shots of Espresso (about ¼ cup) 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract ½ cup Powdered Sugar 2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream For Garnishing: Cocoa Powder Shaved Milk Chocolate or chocolate of choice 2 cups Whipped Cream for piping

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Vanilla Crepes: 1. In a large bowl, beat the milk, eggs, olive oil, sugar and vanilla for one minute. Add a pinch of salt and the flour to mix until smooth.

2. Rub a nonstick skillet with olive oil or butter. Place over medium heat for 2-3 minutes.

3. Using 1/3 cup batter per crepe, add the batter to the center of the heated pan. Move around the pan to help the batter spread evenly in a circle until it looks like a thin crepe. Use an offset spatula to help spread the batter as needed.

4. Cook the crepe for two minutes on each side. Remove with a spatula to a plate.

5. Let the crepes cool completely before adding the whipped cream.

For the Espresso Mascarpone Whipped Cream: 1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add the softened mascarpone. Beat until smooth, then add ½ cup heavy whipping cream. Beat on medium low speed until it begins to get fluffy. Continue adding ½ cup heavy whipping cream until light and airy.

2. Add the powdered sugar to beat for 30 seconds, just until smooth.

3. Fold in the vanilla and espresso.

To Assemble: 1. On a cake plate, add a crepe. Add a generous layer of the whipped cream, then dust with cocoa powder. (Optional: Brush each crepe with an extra espresso or strongly brewed coffee.)

Continue the layering process until all crepes are used.

2. Pipe the top of the crepe cake with extra whipped cream, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with shaved chocolate.

3. Cover and store in the fridge for at least one hour prior to serving. Enjoy!

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES an antipasti platter, cheese fondue and chocolate fondue for dessert. That chocolate fondue was a favorite of customers for 10-15 years. The first week, we introduced dinner entrees and were packed at night, both as a bar and a restaurant. We were one of the only restaurant-bars in downtown.

We started offering live music, and we were the place to be! The Charles Green Band played every Thursday night those first few years. The vibe at night was such a great scene of all different ages!

We attracted so many types of people that it really felt special. I’ll never forget it.

SPEAK TO HOW WINSTON-SALEM WAS AND IS THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THE BUSINESS. In the early days, there were a lot of low-interest loans for small businesses downtown. Plus, we always loved the vibe of the Arts District. The neighborhood was built by an early group of art lovers and even the pioneer restaurant owners, Vivian H. and Stephanie of Sweet Potatoes. It was the right spot for 6th and Vine.

WHAT WAS THE VERY FIRST CONCEPT FOR THE RESTAURANT AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED, IF AT ALL? We initially thought 6th and Vine would be a crowded lunch space with panini sandwiches, small plates and, of course, wine. For appetizers, we started with

Wow, just one challenge? There are too many to share. We’ve experienced flooding, had electricity go out in the middle of a shift, had a patio full of people when it starts raining, etc. But, my biggest challenge is also my greatest joy – staffing! I’ve made so many amazing friends and worked alongside some fun, hardworking people. I would never have survived this business without having some of my best friends, and now my daughter, as managers. We have been in business more than 20 years, and we tell stories of those first 10 years like it was yesterday. The regular customers also make it feel like a family there. I have some that have been coming for 20 years. I will say that being a female business owner has been interesting! I’ve had so many people disparagingly tell me, “I could tell you how to run a restaurant.” I once had a liquor rep trying to sell me a certain liquor and say, “If you’ll just shut up for a minute, I’ll tell you.” (I asked him how he thought his sales technique was working – he was escorted out after that one.)

WHAT IMPRESSION DO YOU HOPE CUSTOMERS COME AWAY WITH WHENEVER THEY DINE THERE? Our place has always been approachable. I hope customers have an amazing experience with food and wine and friends. so cultivated and unique, so you can have “fine dining” food in an approachable atmosphere. We’ve always tried to make wine accessible, and we also have amazing cocktails and plenty of beer for those who don’t feel like wine.

WHAT IS AN ANECDOTE THAT EPITOMIZES WHAT IS ENJOYABLE ABOUT THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY? Again, just one? In our 20 years, we’ve had so many engagements, one couple organized a “flash mob” of actors to pretend like servers and then break out in dance, we’ve had countless celebrations and a few weddings in our midst. It’s really all about a place to spend time with people. From a business owner’s point of view, there is one particularly poignant story. I had an employee who started as a dishwasher, moved to prep and then to the grill. He came back to visit me and my dad one Monday when we were fixing things. This employee became a forklift operator and then a manager. He said that, growing up, he never thought he would be good at anything; no one ever encouraged him enough to be more. He said I was the first person to ever tell him “keep learning, keep trying

new positions, you can do anything.”

That gave him the confidence to believe in himself. That’s the story that makes it all worth it.

WHAT DO YOU ENVISION FOR THE FUTURE OF DINING IN THIS CITY? This city has so many different dining establishments. The beauty of this city is that most of our restaurants are not chains, they are built by entrepreneurs with a dream. That’s what makes WinstonSalem special, and I hope that continues.

Serenity Floyd | Polymer Clay Artist This month’s featured creator, Serenity Floyd, is a young polymer clay artist whose whimsical creations spark wonder! Her playful designs bring her imaginative world to life with each piece crafted with a gentle touch and meticulous attention to detail.

How would you describe your work?

My work is super playful with whimsical touches that bring forth a childlike type of excitement.

I see my work as an extension of myself, coming directly from my imagination. It is a place where I can dream up combinations such as a raccoon keychain toting along his favorite item at the time, a worm, while on the greatest adventure of his little life. I find that my work is truly a reflection of wonderment. The medium of polymer clay calls for a gentle touch and great attention to detail which can be difficult to manage.

What influences your art?

Mainly my imagination! I believe that I have always had quite a vivid and wandering imagination which leads me to build these characters in my mind. While they are typically something familiar to the eye, such as a badger, I add playful elements to each character to make it its own – full of vibrancy and quirkiness.

How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?

I have learned so much since first starting out, but my favorite experience is taking the leap to be an artist vendor at pop-up markets and festivals. I have grown from only posting my art online to selling in person and now sharing the stories behind my most favorite thing to dedicate my time to – my small business. The joy and fulfillment I’ve gained from each market experience has been lovely. Seeing how much my art means to others has transformed how I value my work and view my creative abilities. While my artwork is still very much directly related to my life, I now see that my pieces and the story behind them are able to invoke joy and happiness in the lives of those who purchase my art.

How do you carve out time to be creative?

As a full time college student and artist, it can be hard to sit down and create on a regular basis. With my ever-changing schedule, ideas often pop into my head randomly, so I set aside time after classes to create a small vision board and bring those ideas to life. More often than not, this time sparks other ideas within my mind like fireworks going off, and then I am off to creating. It is not so much that I carve out time to be creative, but rather, I meet the opportunity with an open mind and run with it when I find open times within my schedule.

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your pieces and why?

One of my favorite designs is of an original character keychain, Jack, that I sketched one night before falling asleep. I had this little feeling that it would be the design that would lead me to continue pursuing an entire business in polymer clay art.

This was the first design that led me to see polymer clay in a new light with new possibilities. I just had so much fun dreaming up the life that Jack would live, activities he would do, friends he would make and so the design came to life.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Currently, I am working on manufacturing more items for my shop.

My dream goal for this year is to manufacture plushie keychains in the design of one of my shop’s best selling original characters. This is a big commitment but definitely the right step in making my shop more accessible and diverse for my audience.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?

Make art continually for yourself. It can be extremely easy to get wrapped up in the obligations of sharing your art with others on social media or to sell it, and while those things are amazing and admirable, it can become taxing. To those just beginning their art journey, take time to create for yourself, just for fun and with no restraints.

Regardless of how it has been molded by my genetic predisposition, my upbringing and the full panoply of my experience, I own it. It’s MY self esteem. If the term itself feels a bit aloof or daunting, think of it as positive self regard, self confidence, self assurance or self respect. Then, choose to make a critical investment in it.

FIVE “T” VERBS FOR INVESTING IN YOUR SELF ESTEEM

Turn Kindness Inward Many of us were taught to be kind to others, right? So, take that well-honed skill and turn it inward. It can be harder than it sounds if we are unconsciously in the habit of putting ourselves down, of seeing ourselves as “less than” or “not enough.” Which, in turn, may make us feel unworthy of our own kindness. Start with asking yourself: What makes ME happy? Write it down and remind yourself of these happiness stimulators. Then ask: What sweet gesture can I extend to myself? Put a hard STOP to the comparisons habit, and don’t forget that social media posts paint a selective picture of the lives of others.

Consider embracing this mantra: I commit to treating myself with the same loving kindness that I extend to those I cherish.

Take Good Care You already know what to do and where to turn for fresh input, but it can feel so daunting! Recently, I decided to focus on just one thing – sleep – which has

never been my strong suit. But, by lovingly coaxing myself to close the book or pause the documentary, I am improving my sleep which makes me feel more alive, alert and triumphant. Yay, self esteem!

Tend to the Positive Choose your mirror wisely. Think about all of the positive things you’ve heard from others, about you. No, not the perfunctory, obligatory ones. I’m talking about what the people who know and love the real you say about you. I have a couple of friends who have consistently told me how much they admire my inner strength and my ability to listen at a deep level. I value that feedback, which in turn helps me to value myself just a bit more.

Tap Into or Build Your Relationships and Networks Most of us have a small, often diverse core group of people we hold close to our hearts. You know who they are. When I am struggling with a self esteem demon that is related to the past, I can (and do) turn to one of three women who are intimate with my story. We can speak shorthand, and they know how to help me reset my thinking.

If I’m grappling with this business of aging, there are three other women I tap into who are there for me. And, when the going got really rough a few years back, there was short term therapy that helped me to process what was getting in the way of my self esteem. Trust that when you are there for others in ways that really count, they will be there for you.

Try Something New It should be a no-brainer, but we tend to forget how important trying new things is to building and sustaining a healthy self esteem. So, think back to being a child or to your work portfolio or parenting changes and challenges. You did it, right? You have the ability at every age and at every stage to dip a toe in the water of the new and unfamiliar. It can be something really simple, like trying an online Tai Chi class or an exotic and unfamiliar recipe. That’s how you give your self esteem a boost.

From Family Farm to Conservation Project in Walkertown, NC

As urban expansion continues, each untouched piece of land we’ve grown up loving is often clear cut, exposing a bare field with very little protection for the animals that once called that area home. Natural landscapes, farmlands and forests are disappearing at an alarming rate to make way for residential projects, threatening local ecosystems and agricultural resources. But, for Tracie Bullins, the land she grew up on, now lovingly called The Patch, is being handled with care to preserve it for not only wildlife, but for generations to come, as well.

A LOVE OF LAND AND NATURE

The early days of The Patch, Black Angus and Hereford cows roamed the land.

Eventually, Tracie Bullins’ father enrolled the property in the Forsyth County Farmland preservation program. This agricultural land is protected from development, along with maintaining open and rural spaces while conserving soil and water sources.

“In 2023, my husband and I built a home on my family’s property and moved our family of five to the land where I grew up.

We have four generations on this farm.

After seeing the abundant wildlife that had made The Patch their home, I knew I had to do more with the land that would

incorporate the woods and pond to keep the wildlife here but also attract more species. Farmland is traditionally viewed as a place to grow food and raise livestock. The concept of transforming a farm into wildlife conservation is relatively new,” said Tracie.

“The Patch is home for several herds of deer, flocks of wild turkeys and a variety of other animals such as fox, coyotes, raccoons, opossums and countless bird species like blue herons, kingfishers, woodpeckers, quail, diving ducks and songbirds. All of this wildlife roam, forage and nurture their young as we actively implement measures to safeguard them during their time on the land, aiming to provide them with a safe and flourishing habitat. Not only do animals and nature need land like The Patch, people benefit from the unspoiled land, too,” Tracie commented.

FINDING ITS PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY

While The Patch is now a refuge and home to wildlife, Tracie has seen it address something missing in some people’s lives.

“As our communities take measures to expand roadways and housing options, this decreases the amount of undisturbed land for people to connect with nature and

take a time out from life and exhale from their daily stressors. The Patch has a completely unobstructed view of sunsets which is hard to find today. A little more than a year ago, I had a friend, who is a photographer, ask me if she could refer a colleague of hers to use our property for a maternity session. The beauty of the land, with the tall grasses, lend themselves well to photo sessions. Ultimately, I want to share the natural beauty and serenity of our home and all the views with others. From first birthdays to engagements and maternity photo sessions, The Patch is a beautiful place to capture those special times in your life,” stated Tracie.

Planning and Building Your Best Stage

Building a home is a daunting task.

The actual planning, construction, procurement of materials, labor, and certifications can be messy, even with the best-laid plans. Oh, I haven’t even mentioned the emotional swings that occur during this timeframe. And I won’t, for now.

A significant advantage of going through the building process for the first time is the lack of awareness of potential pitfalls. Not knowing about the unforeseen obstacles, mistakes (however honest they may be or not), and necessary timeline adjustments allows for an abundance of optimism and anticipation in the beginning. Energy and eagerness, combined with visions of achievement and barefoot strolls in a finely manicured lawn, protect our sanity, for a while.

All of this said, and speaking as someone who’s gone through it, it’s really not that difficult, once you’ve done it. Expectations become measured, experience becomes reason, and effort becomes discretionary.

What I mean by that is, you now have an understanding, a broader scope of the process. You learn to accept weatherrelated disruptions, human error, and your own reactions with a sense of calm. Sounds a lot like life and the various stages we all go through.

We make choices—big, life-altering choices— driven by our needs, wants, and desires. I’m not referring to everyday decisions, such as choosing between natural and engineered hardwood flooring. I mean the significant ones: choosing a career path, finding a life partner, setting financial goals. Once we make these choices, we develop plans and take deliberate steps to make them a reality.

It’s a simple process: decide, plan, build.

As my wife and I look ahead to the second half of our projected centenarian lives, we find ourselves doing a lot of planning— mapping out the stages yet to come.

With exposure to retirement communities and senior living through work and family, we’ve gained valuable insight and understand that finding a community that complements our social, health-conscious, and adventurous lifestyles is a must. Travel, security, and

Trying New Things: Cold Plunge and Sauna

On this month’s edition of the Trying New Things column, we are diving into our most ambitious activity yet. I had very little experience and even less knowledge about cold plunges and saunas but was fortunate enough to try both at Washington Park CrossFit. WHAT IS IT?

A cold plunge is a small bath with temperatures ranging from around 60°F to as low as 40°F. Some cold plungers can last around 30 seconds, while others can hold out for as long as 10 minutes.

A sauna is a small heated room, around 150°F to 200°F where participants are meant to sit, stretch and sweat in dry heat. Depending on the temperature of the sauna and the experience of the user, the length of time spent in a sauna ranges from 5-30 minutes.

At Washington Park CrossFit, the cold plunge and sauna were conveniently set up side by side, and I was given an allotted amount of time to jump back and forth.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF?

This is the question I pondered before I convinced myself to jump in. Why would someone put their body in such an uncomfortable position? Are the health impacts of cold plunging and saunas worth it?

In short, yes. Thousands of studies have found that cold plunges and saunas can assist in muscle recovery, soreness, inflammation, sleep and even mood. It’s worth noting that most accounts say that both plunges and saunas grow easier with time.

INSIGHTS & IMPRESSION

My first stop was to try the cold plunge. For the sake of accurate reporting, I stayed in for six minutes which was absolutely as long as I could bear.

Immediately after plunging in (I did not wean myself in, just right to my chest to start), it was painful. It took around a minute to grow comfortable with the temperature, then at around two minutes, it started to feel kind of good. Strange to enjoy what I would have considered to be a form of torture prior to trying, but nonetheless, the rest of the six minutes traded off for around a minute of pain with a minute of comfort.

Then, I jumped right over to the sauna. I had some experience with saunas in college – the morning after we stayed out a little too late, my friends and I went to the sauna and sweated out the hangover (yes, it works).

Sauna after cold plunge was a different experience since the heat brought me back to feeling a normal temperature in around 10 minutes.

BEGINNER FRIENDLY?

After getting through the initial “this has to be some sort of sick joke” narrative, it was all in all a short amount of time and made me feel great. Mental walls aside, this activity is an effective way to recover and is not physically straining if done responsibly.

It is really easy to stay in a sauna too long and go from feeling completely fine to woozy with heart palpitations in a matter of seconds.

As I mentioned in Trying New Things: Hot Yoga, trust your body when it tells you it’s had enough.

DID I FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING OUT?

I was absolutely 100% aware that I was in the cold plunge and sauna while I was in them.

This is not exercise in the way yoga and crossfit were, but it certainly is not for the faint of heart. In less than 20 minutes, I had put myself through a difficult yet rewarding challenge. Be sure to head over to Washington Park CrossFit and try their cold plunge and sauna for a recovery after a CrossFit class.

If you can’t quite wrap your head around this one, it’s alright! I will continue to try new health and fitness initiatives so you don’t have to and, hopefully, one of these activities will bring back the joy of working out!

When asked to describe his personal patient philosophy, Dr. Scurry offers two replies.

“I’ll always listen carefully to a patient’s story, so I can focus on that individual’s ‘chief concern.’

Sometimes a patient will say to a plastic surgeon, ‘Doc, what can you do for me?’ I always like to redirect this question more to the point of, ‘Well, how can I help you; what brings you to see us; what’s bugging you; what should we talk about?’ Once a patient can tell me something specific that’s bothering them, I’m able to give them some ideas and realistic options on how we may help.”

A Winston-Salem native, Dr. Scurry is a graduate of Reynolds High School, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest’s School of Medicine and Penn State’s Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency, and he also completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Scurry is Board-Certified

Aging Out Self-Sabotage

While many aspects of life in your 30s are made easier from age-earned wisdom and experience, some of us are still stuck in painful patterns preventing us from reaching our goals. Without proper intervention and introspection, breaking free of dysfunction costs valuable time – time that only seems to be ticking by more quickly by the day.

Although some may be reluctant to discuss going to therapy, I’m someone who sees no shame in opening up about mental health struggles. I discuss it knowing the risk of people labeling me as “unstable,” “overly emotional” or “crazy,” but it’s a risk I’m willing to take to walk in authenticity.

With years of therapy, countless hours spent researching relationship dynamics, personality disorders and a full degree in psychology, you’d think I would have learned something – or, at

least, be able to apply it. Knowing something on a cognitive level and integrating it into practice and deep understanding is something with which I struggle and something that causes me to repeat patterns and find myself chipping away at my future bit by bit. It’s almost as if a larger part of me wants me to fail, even if I’m not fully aware of it.

As a person of faith, if I’m frustrated, I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for God to watch me blindly overlook glaring red flags (and I mean glaring) in dating, like a bug attracted to light. How many times do I have to fall flat on my face, spend months in recovery and experience panic attacks before I stop dating sociopaths?

My inner child is screaming, “This time it will be different! I’m special to him.” However, each time I have the wind knocked out of me and experience betrayal and abandonment from unsavory characters I should have stayed far away from, I find myself back to square one – only a little more disappointed in myself.

MY HILL

Someone can have a great career, a fit and healthy body, travel to different countries alone and possess many talents, but still struggle with old habits dying hard behind the scenes. I’m in the grieving process of one of my old habits backfiring on me from opening and walking through a door I knew better than to walk through. As a result, my focus has been thrown off, I have to somehow pick my self esteem off the floor (again), and I have nothing to show for it. I’ve delayed my professional and relationship goals a little longer because I clung to trauma bonds and listened to my wounds instead of listening to wisdom. I can juggle many hats, but I can’t seem to get a grip when it comes to mastering my mind and fighting negative voices in my head.

God didn’t remove the thorn in Paul’s flesh, and he certainly isn’t removing my thorn of low self worth. Maybe a nice thorn keeps us humble and grounded and reminds us that not everything is in our control. All I can do is

get back up, try harder to follow God’s signs and value myself enough to stop self sabotaging in the future.

Focusing on what I can control each day, like burning a candle, spilling my guts to ChatGPT, taking a walk in nature, praying, cuddling my cat and keeping myself healthy are the only steps forward until I’m mentally back on my feet. The only bright side I can look at currently is that I have more tools and awareness of coping mechanisms now than I did before therapy and with the gained experience of going through multiple rounds of heartbreak. I understand the importance of radical acceptance now, although I still find myself struggling to accept defeat. I know what works and what doesn’t work now. Rebounding is a terrible idea. Revenge is a terrible idea. Leaning on God and finding ways to self soothe in the process are the only ways forward until the pain vanishes one day when I least expect it.

HARVARD HAPPINESS CLASS and Why You Should Take It

I grew up with a best friend whose parents were a Hollywood soap opera actress and an ear, nose and throat surgeon. It was rumored that they were richer than God and that their enormous mansion in Beverly Hills and string of Rolls Royce cars placed them in the crème-de-la-crème of movie star royalty.

But, I also knew that they were miserably unhappy and made their children so and that screaming and fighting with each other was a daily occurrence. As a line from a current country western song says clearly “happiness don’t live in bigger houses.” The three kids all left the home by the age of 18 and remained estranged from their mom and pop for the entirety of their lives.

Several years ago, I made a choice to re-invent my happiness wheel which was flat and shot through with holes.

I had a great partner, job, money in the bank and the trappings of success but was suffering from severe clinical depression. A colleague told me about the Harvard Happiness Class she had taken and how it had completely changed the emotional architecture of her life in a wonderful way. One day, I was having a conversation with a friend group, and we decided to send voice messages out of convenience. Usually, there’s always one person who chimes in late, and she replied with a voice message. The first thing she said was, “God is amazing that these conversations have been through voice messages because I’m driving. He just does all things well!” This got me thinking about how God perfectly aligns every little thing in our lives to keep us propelling forward with ease. We often forget that God is in our everyday tasks. It’s human nature to fixate on the bigger picture but, as the master planner He is, God knows all small things add up to the grander vision.

God gave you a glimpse of your destiny to motivate you and likely to keep you moving each day towards that vision but I want to challenge you to find God in your daily tasks because you cannot reach your goals without them. Be intentional for one day – how is God in the tea or coffee you make for yourself? How is God in the routine to get you and your family ready for the day? How is God in the route you take to work? How is God in the computer you use? How is God in the meals you prepare?

When you intentionally reflect upon how multiple things align to help you get to places safely and check off your to-do lists, it’s less likely to glide over small blessings, even when you have a rough day.

When I think about why I founded Perennial Peaces, it was to bring peace to people who wear what makes them feel unique and special. At times, I get frustrated because of the social media algorithms, or maybe the weather affected the turnout of a craft market, or maybe a sale on my website didn’t convert the way I had hoped. I know God called me to start my business, but He wants me to do things His way and He has sustained me even when I feel like I’m not growing fast enough. Instead of analyzing the number of orders, it’s much better to find joy in preparing the orders for shipping, realizing each box is connected to one of God’s children. One day, I may reach a period where preparing orders is overwhelming because there are so many, so training myself to find God in the small tasks will be something I can always lean on to get me through each day.

Proverbs 8:17 says we will find God when we diligently seek Him. There are so many opportunities to see how God is with you, so will you make it easier for your mind by abiding in His love and appreciating the small blessings? He always gives you a way out when the enemy tempts you into discouragement (1 Cor. 13). So, stay grateful and curious to find Him in everything you do. I have faith in you.

Have you noticed that we, as humans, tend to go negative? It is called the negativity bias, and it was instilled in us to keep us safe. In ancient days, we had to worry about lions, tigers and bears attacking us, but not so much now (although who knows after the last few years). But, we are wired this way and must work extra hard to maintain a positive attitude. Nobody enjoys working with or being around Negative Nelly, Naysayer Ned or Drama King Dave.

7 WAYS TO EXUDE POSITIVE ENERGY

Complaining – I don’t think we are conscious of how much we 1 Avoid complain. I did a no complaining challenge once and barely made it through the morning on the first day. Making a conscious effort NOT to complain is important to being a more positive person. A quote that I like from The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon is “Be a winner, not a whiner.”

More – This makes you feel better and makes you more 2 Smile approachable and appealing to others.

Optimistic – Sometimes we tend to look at things with 3 Be a glass-half-empty view and assume the worst. Make a conscious effort to see the good in situations and in people.

On Productivity and Performance – Focus on being 4 Focus productive and performing at your best. Try to let some of the other stuff go! It will serve you well.

Appreciation to Others – Thank others and let 5 Show them know you appreciate them as often as possible.

So, how can you avoid them if you interact with them regularly? This can be challenging, but you can set some boundaries around the time you spend with them. And, you can let them know that you want to focus on solutions, rather than problems, when they share their negativity.

This will help build relationships and goodwill.

Energy Vampires – Avoiding energy 6 Avoid vampires can help you to stay more positive. You know who they are at your work and in your life! They are the complainers, the naysayers and the drama queens/kings. They will suck your energy and leave you feeling more negative and depleted.

1. Once the chimichurri is made, get your chicken thighs out, pat them dry and season with your favorite seasoning. The chimichurri is going to add a lot of flavor, so I usually just hit them with a little salt & pepper or SPG (salt, pepper and garlic).

2. Once the chicken is seasoned, spread the chimichurri sauce on both sides with a basting brush.

3. Place them back in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or so for the seasoning and marinade to lock in.

4. Now, you can either cook these in the oven, on a skillet or, my preferred method, over some charcoal!

5. Get the coals rolling hot, throw them on the grill and let them cook for about three or four minutes before flipping them over.

6. I like to flip them on both sides two to three times and, depending on thickness of the thighs and how hot your grill is running, they should only need about 10-15 minutes max to get fully browned up and reach that internal temperature of 165 degrees.

7. Once they are fully charred up and at the correct temperature, pull them off and enjoy!

You know those days when you’re grinding away on the elliptical for an hour, but the results just aren’t showing up? I’ve been there, too, and I discovered something gamechanging – it’s all about your heart rate zones!

THE SECRET YOUR FITNESS TRACKER ISN’T TELLING YOU

Here’s something I tell all my clients – not all exercise is created equal.

The intensity – measured by your heart rate – completely changes what’s happening in your body.

“But Jane,” my client Jessica asked me last week, “I thought cardio was cardio. Isn’t any exercise good exercise?”

Well, yes and no. Your body actually uses different fuel sources depending on how hard you’re pushing, and this directly affects whether you’re burning fat, building mitochondria (your cellular power plants) or potentially even breaking down muscle.

YOUR HEART RATE ZONES DECODED

The Fat-Burning Sweet Spot (50-65% max heart rate) This is your leisurely morning walk, gentle yoga or casual bike ride with the kids. At this intensity, your body primarily burns fat for fuel – yes, really!

For a 40-year-old woman, this means keeping your heart rate around 110-120 BPM. It feels easy – you can chat the entire time – but it’s incredibly effective for fat metabolism and daily energy.

The “No Man’s Land” (65-75% max heart rate) This is where many of us live during our workouts – that moderate jog or spin class where you’re working but not dying. Here’s the truth – this zone (around 130-140 BPM for a 40-year-old) is actually the LEAST efficient.

You’re working too hard to burn fat effectively but not hard enough to trigger those amazing mitochondrial adaptations. It’s like being stuck in traffic – lots of effort, minimal results.

The Mitochondrial Magic Zone (80-85%+ max heart rate) This is where the magic happens. When you push to about 150-160 BPM (for our 40-year-old example), your body triggers mitochondrial biogenesis – essentially creating more cellular power plants! This makes you more efficient at everything, including burning fat later.

How do you know you’re there? Look for the 4 B’s & H’s: • You’re Breathless (can’t chat easily).

• Your muscles are Burning.

• You’re getting Hot. • The effort feels Heavy.

THE WORKOUT RECIPES THAT ACTUALLY WORK

So, what does this mean for your weekly routine?

1. Daily Movement in Your Fat-Burning Zone – Get in 30+ minutes of walking or other easy movement most days. This is where your body is happily burning fat while keeping stress hormones low.

2. Strength Training 2-3x Weekly – Please don’t skip the weights! Muscle is metabolically active tissue that burns calories even when you’re Netflix binging. Plus, it gives us that toned look we’re after.

3. Short Bursts of High Intensity 1-2x Weekly – This doesn’t mean marathon HIIT sessions. I’m talking about 15-20 minutes total with intervals like: • 30 seconds all-out effort (hill sprint, burpees, kettlebell swings) • 90-120 seconds recovery (until heart rate drops to around 120 BPM) • Repeat 5-10 times 4. Minimize the “No Man’s Land” Cardio – Unless you’re training for a specific event, limit those 45-minute moderate cardio sessions. They often spike stress hormones without the powerful adaptations of higher intensities.

CALCULATE YOUR PERSONAL ZONES To find your zones, use this simple formula: 220 - Your Age = Max Heart Rate For example, at 40 years old: • Fat-burning zone (60-65%): 110-120 BPM • “No Man’s Land” (avoid): 130-140 BPM • Mitochondrial magic zone (80-85%): 150-160 BPM

SARAH’S TRANSFORMATION

My client, Sarah, was spinning her wheels with hour-long moderate cardio sessions five days a week. She was exhausted, her body wasn’t changing and her energy was tanking by 3:00 p.m. daily.

We switched to daily 30-minute walks, two weekly strength sessions and one 15-minute high-intensity workout each week.

Within a month, she had more energy, was sleeping better and noticed her clothes fitting differently – all while spending LESS time exercising.

MAY 23-24 GEARS AND GUITARS FESTIVAL 2025 Downtown W-S. Join us for Streets of Fire on Friday night as we light up the night along 4th Street in downtown Winston-Salem for drag race-style street sprints! JUNE 16-20 CREATING A CHARACTER

Little Theatre of W-S, 419 N. Spruce Street in W-S. We can be a fictional character or a real person. In theatre, we get to explore all of these characters. Through movement, expression and dress-up, campers will create their very own character. There will be a character showcase at the end of the week.

Campers will learn how facial, body and vocal changes can affect a character.

IT’S OKAY IF SOMEONE DOESN’T LIKE YOU

Not everyone will like you, and that’s okay.

This can take a long time to accept, as it did me, but once you do get a grip on this fact, it is very liberating. I no longer feel the need to prove myself or seek validation from those who don’t appreciate me for who I truly am. You aren’t meant for everyone, so pick your “tribe” carefully, and focus your energy on them.

THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO TRULY VALUE YOUR COMPANY AND OTHERS WHO VALUE WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM…KNOW THE DIFFERENCE Some people appreciate you for your presence, your energy and who you are as a person. Others, however, keep you around only for their benefit – whether it’s for favors, support or opportunities you provide.

Recognizing the difference has been eyeopening and has helped me to set clearer boundaries with people.

RESPECT YOUR OWN BOUNDARIES BY NOT OVERSHARING Not everyone deserves access to your innermost thoughts, struggles or personal experiences. I used to think that being open and vulnerable with people would deepen our connections, but I’ve learned that some individuals use what you share against you.

Protecting my personal stories and only confiding in those I trust has helped me maintain emotional well being and avoid unnecessary hurt.

Life is a constant journey of growth, self-discovery and learning. Along the

way, I’ve discussed with my BFF lessons that completely changed or shifted my perspective, making me more at peace with myself and the world around me. These five realizations, in particular, transformed how I navigate relationships, set boundaries and protect my energy. So, what are those five lessons? I am so glad you asked.

YOU CAN’T CONTROL SOMEONE ELSE’S NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR

For a long time, I believed that, if I tried hard enough, I could change or influence how others treated me. The truth is, people will act how they choose to, regardless of how much kindness or patience you extend. I had a sister-in-law, operative word is “had” who, no

matter what I did, she treated me poorly. I couldn’t do anything right in her eyes, and one day I went to my ex-mother-in-law and just said, “I have no idea what I’ve done or how to fix things with….” My motherin-law said, “The only thing within your control is how you react to her. Letting go of the need to ‘fix’ her negativity will feel like a weight is off your shoulders. Don’t take her actions personally; at the root of her behavior is jealousy and seeing in you things she wished she saw in herself.”

That advice freed me up, and I no longer take anyone’s actions personally, and I no longer waste my energy trying to change what isn’t mine to change. On a side note, the only thing I miss about being married are my in-laws…there were good people; the rest of the family, not so much!

PEOPLE WHO ARE CRUEL AND MEAN TO OTHERS ARE UNHAPPY WITH THEMSELVES

It is easy to take rude or hurtful behavior personally, but I’ve realized that those who go out of their way to be unkind are often battling their own inner turmoil. Happy, confident people don’t feel the need to tear others down like my ex sister-in-law. To be as resentful and miserable as she was to me for 30 years, there was something seriously missing in her because happy people seek happiness with those around them, not misery.

These five lessons have helped me and my BFF reshape how we approach life and relationships. They have given us the power to let go of what doesn’t serve us, focus on genuine connections and set boundaries that protect our peace. If you are on a similar journey, I hope these realizations can help you find the clarity and freedom you deserve.
