Angela Cassar DDS Dr. Cassar has lived in Forsyth County since relocating to the Carolinas in 2005. Although she has spent most of her career working in North Wilkesboro and Mt. Airy, Dr. Cassar’s ultimate goal was to open her own practice closer to her new home in Clemmons. This goal was achieved on October 22, with the opening of Clemmons Comprehensive Dental Care.

Dr. Cassar is an experienced dental practitioner who works well with children and adults, and performs most dental procedures including cosmetic fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, implant restorations, as well as dental extractions, root canals, and removable appliances. She prides herself in making her patients appointments as comfortable and painless as possible, while performing thorough and complete dental care.

Ashley Carter RDH Some of you may recognize Ashley Carter. She is no stranger to the field of dentistry. Upon graduating from West Forsyth high school, Ashley immediately entered into the dental hygiene program at Guilford Tech Community College, where she received the Golden Scaler Award. Since becoming a registered dental hygienist, Ashley worked at the same group practice in Winston-Salem for the majority of her career. After meeting Ashley, we knew she would be a great asset to our dental practice, where she could continue to provide thorough, comprehensive and compassionate care to patients.

Ashley is a very outgoing, fun and energetic person, who’s goal is to make her patients’ dental appointments as pleasant as possible.

Keara Sanders CDA Keara Sanders graduated from the dental assisting program at Wilkes Community College in 2003 where she received the Phi Theta Kappa and National Vocational-Technical Honor Society awards upon graduation. She started working as Dr. Cassar’s dental assistant in June of 2005, and hasn’t looked back since! Keara is a certified dental assistant, and has expanded function training in coronal polishing and nitrous oxide monitoring.

In addition to this, Keara recently has taken continuing education courses for monitoring patients under conscious sedation. She works well with kids, and is very gentle and compassionate with all patients.

Heather Swaschnig, Patient Care Coordinator After relocating to the area from Idaho with her husband, Heather Swaschnig recently joined the staff of Clemmons Comprehensive Dental Care.

She brings not only an extensive and impressive work history focusing on quality customer service, but also a friendly disposition, and bright smile that is very welcoming to patients. Heather is involved in scheduling patient appointments as well as making financial arrangements to ensure that patients are able to get the care they need in a timely fashion. All About Retinal Detachments There are several sight-threatening conditions in the field of ophthalmology and a detached retina is one of them.

This is a condition I see several times during the year and, unfortunately, some patients wait too long to be seen to prevent vision loss.

A retina becomes detached when it becomes separated from its underlying tissue. There are a few signs and symptoms that everyone should be aware of that would indicate a retinal problem. Seeing sudden spots, floaters, and flashes of light are warning signs of a detached retina.

You may have sudden blurry or poor vision. Another sign that must not be missed is a shadow or curtain occurring from the top or side of field your of vision. These signs can occur as the retina is pulling away from its supportive tissue. The lifetime incidence in normal individuals is 1 in 300 and rises to 1 and 20 if you are moderately nearsighted (over -5.00 Diopters). Up to 50 percent of people who experience a retinal tear will have a subsequent detachment. Causes of retinal detachments include high levels of nearsightedness, injury, diabetes, vascular tumors, eye surgery, and certain systemic diseases.

Some celebrities that have experienced retinal detachments include basketball player Stoudemire, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, and martial arts expert Alan Belcher. Its also speculated that Theodore Roosevelt had partial blindness in this left eye because of a boxing injury that resulted in a retinal detachment.

Treatment most often involves surgery. Surgical procedures used to treat retinal detachments are scleral buckling surgery. This is the most common type of repair and it involves attaching a small band of silicone or plastic to the outside of the eye. This band will compress the eye inward, reducing the pulling of the retina and allow the retina to reattach to the interior wall of the eye. This surgery may be combined with vitrectomy which involves removing the clear jelly like fluid from the back of the eye, which can be replaced with clear silicone oil or gas to push the detached portion of the retina back. Another treatment is called pneumatic retinopexy. In this procedure, the surgeon will inject a small bubble of gas into the posterior chamber and push the detached portion of the retina back to its underlying tissue. If there is a tear in the retina, the surgeon may use laser or a freezing probe to attach the retina firmly and to seal the tear.

Surgery is not always guaranteed in reattaching the retina and the odds for success depend on the location, cause, and extent of the retinal detachment.

How to Take an Outfit from Day to Night This Holiday Season

By Charlotte Parris, Co-Owner of Mainstream Boutique It's the most wonderful time of the year! That is a line from one of my favorite songs that reminds me of the next two months of parties, luncheons, and holiday festivities. If you have kids, it can mean school activities, holiday plays, sports events, and visits from relatives. It can make your head spin trying to keep up with all of the fun, but deciding what to wear shouldn't be stressful. The last thing you need is to worry about what to wear and whether you will have time to change. There are several wonderfully simple ways to change a daytime outfit into a nighttime one.

Accessories!

Accessories are the easiest way to dress up or down an outfit. Smaller jewelry is typical for daytime wear. At night, you can change into larger, dangly earrings such as the popular chandelier earring. Complement that with a chunky, flashier bracelet or a multi-layer, longer necklace and you’re ready for any evening event. Another great accessory is the scarf. Jazz up your outfit with a lacy, vintage scarf or one of the new studded scarves for an edgier evening look.

The right shoes and bag can really change your look. Higher heels or tall boots are common during evening events and pair nicely with a small studded, embroidered, or sequined clutch. Remember not to overdo the jewelry and accessories. After-hours events are often formal or dressier affairs where a simple look is more elegant. When in doubt, go with less.

Makeup!

Always freshen your make-up before going out. At night, wear smokier eyes with more dramatic liner and shimmery or darker eye shadow.

There are some great glitter eyeliners available to help your eyes really standout. Experiment with colored mascaras to truly rev up your style. Lipsticks during the season tend to be brighter with some shimmer or sparkle. Don't be afraid to be a bit more daring, but practice a few times before the big event.

What to Wear?

Sleeveless dresses are very popular this winter. For day, wear this look with a blazer or structured jacket. At night, use a large scarf or shawl for added warmth or combine a sleeveless dress with an edgy, short, fitted jacket. During the day, your favorite maxi-skirt is perfect for work or running around town with a dolman top or blazer. When you're rushing off to an evening event, change into a glitzy camisole and cardigan combo or pull the skirt up to make a dress.

Add a wide belt and shawl or sequined jacket and you’re set for a night on the town. The little black dress is perfect for day and night. Wear this outfit with a jacket, small earrings and pumps during the day. After work, you can leave the jacket behind and add larger earrings, a sparkly necklace and heels. Now you're on your way! Blouses that are conservative in front and exposed in back are great for this season. Add a vest or jacket over the blouse for day, hiding the plunging back. E MBRACING THE G IFT By Dr. Debbie Lanier The magic of Christmas . . . its enchantment overwhelms the senses, doesn’t it? The sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes, the warm embraces of those we love . . . each have a way of diverting our attention from the worries of the world. For that night, it’s as if the holiday wraps us in a warm blanket, reassuring us that all is well.

Some of our sweetest memories are of Christmases gone by. We remember the laughter of loved ones no longer with us. We recall the “life” exuding from cherished moments around the table. As we watch the classics, we find ourselves reminiscing about another time and place, don’t we? How is it that the sights and sounds of Rudolph so easily transport me back to 1972? All over again, I become that enthusiastic little girl in footed pajamas, captivated by the red-nosed reindeer? For all the young chicks, that’s when you tuned into CBS at 8:00 that one special night of the year or you missed it entirely!

As I reflect upon the sweetness of those times, I find something strikingly peculiar. With the abundance of gifts I’ve received through the years, for the life of me, I struggle to recall even a dozen of them by name. Of course, there are those presents that live in infamy, like the year I got the new Shaun Cassidy album. You know, “Da Do Ron Ron.” (Again, young chicks, look him up. He was hot!) I played that song so many times Christmas Day that my brothers threatened me within an inch of my life if I dared even hum it again.

Seriously, when I think about it, as great as the gifts were, that’s not what sticks. It’s really the moments that matter. Maybe it’s because Christmas was never supposed to be about gifts we give one another. There’s nothing wrong with it. In fact, giving feeds my joy. I’m simply saying that a fixation on presents was never the essence of Christmas. Somehow, its emphasis got misplaced. For you see, the true magic of Christmas lies in the MIRACLE of the season.

Did you just hear that? The God who carved the mountains with His fingertips and scooped out the oceans with His hand . . . this God chose to come pitch His tent right here among us. Talk about a demotion! But that’s what love does. Jesus didn’t want to merely possess knowledge of what we faced. He chose to face it with us. He subjected Himself to the most excruciating experiences of life so he could “feel” what we feel. He wanted to walk the journey alongside us, assuring our hearts with every step that we are not alone. Now, that’s a gift worth remembering. It’s a gift worth embracing. It’s the gift that creates the miracle of Christmas.

So amid all the exchanging of presents this year, let us reflect upon the real gift. Even better, why don’t we embrace this life-giving offer? Embrace the One who loves us enough to extend the most incredible gift! Of all the presents, His Presence matters most. Emmanuel – “God is with us!”…so we are never left to walk this journey alone!

Giving your Child the Gift of Communication My son doesn’t seem to communicate like other children his age. Everyone tells me he is just a late talker and not to worry, but I feel like I need to do something. What if I let this go and then find out later there really was a problem. What do I do? he American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) reports that an estimated 42 million Americans have a speech, language or hearing disorder.

Children who are not able to effectively communicate with others, or who have not developed speech and language skills that are considered age appropriate, could have a speech/language disorder which will affect their continued development of a language system.

How do I know?

As a parent, it can be difficult to determine whether or not your child is a “late bloomer” or has a speech or language problem. While there are reliable stages children pass through in the development of speech, factors such as innate ability to learn language, the types and amount of language a child hears, and how people respond to a child’s early attempts at communication can all impact the pace of speech and language development.

Early Intervention is the Key! Free, Effective Screenings.

What to Consider?

It is important to understand that communication problems are not limited to the ability to say or respond to words. There are a range of communication areas, including expressive language (conveying meaningful messages, oral and written), receptive language (understanding meaningful messages, reading and comprehending), speech (sounds produced that make up words and phrases), voice (quality, pitch and loudness), fluency (smoothness of speech), hearing, cognition and pragmatics (social use of language). Thus, it is easy to miss a

communication problem in a child who, for example, has a vocabulary of approximately 300 words at the age of two and appears to be meeting key language milestones. Though the child may be using a significant number of words, a formal assessment may reveal he or she is unable to do so in a conversational way or is unable to complete a meaningful sentence. Early screenings, and subsequent evaluations, by professionally trained and licensed speech-language pathologists ensure that a child’s speech and language problems, mild to severe, are identified and treated so that problems with reading, writing, schoolwork, and interpersonal relationships may be prevented or improved.

Greening Your Reproductive Life

I

n this age of "being green," there is a heightened awareness about the dangers of pesticides, antibiotics and hormones in our food. Eating healthy is becoming a broader trend with organic grocery stores and farmers markets on the rise. Mothers, in particular, are shopping the organic section of the baby food aisle for their children, scanning for buzz words like: organic, pesticide-free, free-range, HGH-free, no preservatives, BPA-free, no high-fructose corn syrup, non-GMO and hormone-free. But as careful as we are to avoid these harmful chemicals, carcinogens and other contaminants in the food we eat, many women purposely ingest hormones daily in the form of birth control pills.

“A significant portion of the female consumers buying their hormone-free options [of groceries] are daily taking some form of hormonal and chemical contraceptive, not by accident, but on purpose and with a prescription,” said Ashley McGuire of Verily.com. These mothers “who avoid feeding their kids pesticides and hormones are themselves consuming a steady diet of desogestrel or medroxyprogesterone acetate" via hormone birth control pills. Many of these women's bodies still contain high levels of these hormones when they conceive, and so pass the hormones and chemicals through the bloodstream to their fetus. Natural Family Planning (NFP), though it has Roman Catholic roots, is more often sought today by couples seeking to avoid artificial hormones and chemicals. Historically associated with practicing the not-so reliable "rhythm" or "calendar" methods, modern NFP is more reliable and not just a choice for those of the faith. Both the rhythm and calendar methods predict fertile periods based on the woman's cycle history, assuming the current month's fertile period will be the same as the last. "These statistical methods are not very effective when used

to avoid conception. Modern NFP methods take into account the woman's current fertility, and are physiologically based, using biomarkers to determine periods of fertility," said Lewis D. Lipscomb, MD, of Triad Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Lipscomb is the area's expert in Natural Family Planning.

"My view of fertility is that it is not a disease to be treated with surgery or prescription drugs. Rather, fertility is a state of health. Infertility is a symptom of underlying disease. This is a paradigm shift -- if we view fertility as a state of health, we will try to preserve and respect it rather than suppress or destroy it."

Some modern methods of NFP include the Billings Ovulation Method, the Creighton Model, the Marquette Method, and the Symptothermal Method. Each one of these involves recording fertility cycles. "Women who chart their cycles notice abnormalities,"

explained Dr. Lipscomb. "PMS, painful periods, bleeding between periods, limited mucus and heavy flow are all abnormalities that can be corrected to restore normal hormonal cycles, even enhancing fertility without expensive procedures. Birth control pills don't correct the problem, but only mask it."

These methods are 97-99 percent effective when used to avoid pregnancy (the same effectiveness as birth control pills) even in women with irregular cycles, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and during breastfeeding.

After a consultation with the couple, Dr. Lipscomb recommends one of several NFP methods that would best suit their lifestyle and preferences, and connects them to further resources for training.

Some training options are offered in a group setting, while others are one-onone, or even online self-study courses.

"Natural Family Planning has to take place in a supportive marriage to be effective," said Dr. Lipscomb. "Both parties must have a willingness to learn and a willingness to abstain during fertile times if their intent is to avoid pregnancy. After a couple of months, they are able to confidently recognize the fertile time of their cycle. Don't forget NFP can be used to help achieve pregnancy too!"

The Knitted Sweater.

There is an unwritten rule that, unfortunately, loved ones forget in their quest to give the perfect, handmade gift.

Never, never make someone a sweater unless they have specially requested one.

Scarves, even mittens are fine (author’s opinion only), but not a sweater. This was even in an instruction book I own.

If you are the recipient, you are obligated to wear it immediately – whether the collar has a chokehold on your throat or the yarn is so scratchy you want to bathe in calamine lotion.

These include birthdays, graduations, weddings, births and anniversaries, and for most of us, photos and memories are all we have to take us back to the celebrations. Unfortunately, memories can fade and while each photo can tell a thousand words, a video can tell the whole story!

“I am not the typical videographer,” said Matthew Hall, owner of 201 Media Productions. “For weddings, I like to capture the personality of the bride and groom and their guests. I want to tell the story of their day in every way. I've been known to be in the middle of the dance floor at a wedding reception filming up close and personal. I walk into a wedding as a stranger and usually feel like a family member when I leave. I want to try to interact with everyone, from the parents of the bride to guests and wait staff. I feel that everyone should be treated equally no matter what, and my excitement for filming is obvious to everyone that sees me.”

Now that we've grown and expanded, things are really taking off. 201 Media Productions just turned three years old in September, and I am excited about the direction that we're moving in.”

From the start, Matthew knew he wanted to expand his business to more than just videography. “In the beginning, it was only about video production, and now I have developed a great team of professionals that help my company become a more valuable tool for our clients,” said Hall. “The goal is to make 201 Media Productions a fullservice media company, especially in the wedding industry.

Matthew’s knowledge of videography can be traced back to his extensive broadcast background. “I worked for three news stations in North Carolina – two NBC stations and one FOX station – and now I film everything from corporate and business videos to television commercials and live events,” said Hall. “Showcasing many types of video samples keeps leading to new open doors for 201 Media Productions. I expect the future to grow tremendously, especially in the wedding industry and in corporate video.

My 5-year goal is to be known all over the state of NC. My 10-year goal is to personally be involved in productions around the country. I want to continue developing strong teams that can be sent out to multiple events every week.”

oliday cheer is contagious across North Carolina as streets light up, stores become festive, and beloved traditions such as the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ (UNCSA’s) production of The Nutcracker get underway.

Directed by Ethan Stiefel, former Dean of the UNCSA School of Dance and now artistic director for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the 2012 production of The Nutcracker remains one of the most-anticipated Triad holiday traditions for kids and adults alike.

UNCSA’s heralded ballet The Nutcracker received rave reviews from critics and enthusiastic audiences since the reimagined production debuted in 2009.

Last year, the Winston-Salem Journal’s Ken Keuffel said the UNCSA production

The vastly popular Tchaikovsky Nutcracker ballet music will be performed by the UNCSA Nutcracker Orchestra under the musical direction of special guest conductor Charles Barker, principal conductor for the American Ballet Theatre.

2012 also marks the first production of The Nutcracker under the leadership of Susan Jaffe, who was named dean of the UNCSA School of Dance.

Declared by the New York Times to be “America’s Quintessential American Ballerina,” Susan Jaffe danced as a principal with American Ballet Theatre for 20 years and now is a respected choreographer and dance teacher.

This year, guest artists Veronika Part (principal, American Ballet Theatre) and Charles Askegard (principal, New York City Ballet and soloist, American Ballet Theatre) will dance the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier Prince at the performances on December 13 at 7:30 p.m. and December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Douglas Gawriljuk, a former faculty member of the UNCSA School of Dance who now teaches dance in West Palm Beach, Fla., will return to supervise the 2012 production of The Nutcracker.

“I, um, don’t usually come here. My I felt like doctor said massages would help my back heal quicker from my I had to surgery….” It struck me as odd that I justify why felt as if I had to explain myself to the I had bumped into at the I was there. student massage therapist’s office. I realized that I felt guilty for being so “self-indulgent.”

You see, taking an hour off, in the middle of the day, just to get a massage did not seem justified. I know that sounds sad, but I suspect I am like a number of other women out there. We skip doing things that we know will benefit us because we are too busy taking care of everyone else.

Here’s the reality, however. If you are a golfer, your BODY is more important than what kind of clubs you play. Yet, it is often the last piece of equipment we take care of. I recommend massage therapy for my golf clients for a number of reasons.

• Increased flexibility yields faster club head speed, which equals more distance.

• Better body balance not only avoids injuries, but also improves body awareness. When attempting to make swing changes, body awareness is essential.

• Increased ability to work out and stretch helps strength and posture.

• Improved mental and physical health leads to lower scores.

For those of us over the age of 40, who feel a bit stiff, massage is a MUST. Having endured chronic pain for years before my back surgery, I can tell you that when you are in pain, you “curl up.” Because your posture is bad, you can’t take deep breaths. Failing to breathe properly leads to all kinds of other issues, both physical and psychological.

Turning that argument around, the better I feel, the more I can work out.

The more effective my stretching, the better posture I have…. You get the picture.

So where do you start? Well, I started with Siri. “Is she your massage therapist?” you ask. No, she’s the voice on my iPhone.

One day, I pulled a muscle in my back. I was desperate for relief, so I asked Siri to find me the closest massage therapist. There are MANY great professionals in the Triad, but my phone found Becca at Beneficial Bodywork in Clemmons, NC. Becca turned out to be a terrific massage therapist. Her deep tissue massage was unlike the standard Swedish massage I had experienced at spas. Thanks to Becca, I am now able to play golf again and am moving towards improved health.

This winter, if you want to get better, do your swing drills, work on your mental game, and get massages at least twice a month. Taking care of your body is an essential part of playing your best. The next time I bump into a student in the massage therapist’s office, I will not be embarrassed.

I only have one body. I guess I better start taking care of it.

By Kerri Stewart No, I’m not referring to presents and parties. It’s almost tax time! One of the biggest hurdles facing individuals (and some businesses) during tax time is disorganization during the year.

Tax time can be particularly frustrating when you’re digging through piles of receipts and searching for lost tax documents.

Besides the stress, there could be lost deductions, delays in filing, and a higher fee charged for tax preparation. While our work mostly focuses on business bookkeeping, a household is a “business” of its own as well. Treating it as one can make tax time a lot easier.

1. Best tip of all – don’t wait until April to start organizing for your taxes. Implement a system that you will use each month, all year round. If you keep up with receipts and deductions on a monthly basis, tax time is a breeze.

2. Create an easily-accessible folder for all 2012 tax documents that come in the mail in January. Even if you’re not sure it’s a tax document, put it in the folder anyways, rather than hunting for it later. Save time for your tax preparer by throwing away the envelopes.

3. Determine what your tax deduction categories are.

Use a simple accordion file to store receipts for each of the categories separately. This is particularly important for deductions for which you may not receive an end-of-year statement. Examples include: a. Home mortgage/property taxes b. Contributions c. Child care d. Medical e. Investments f. Employee expenses g. Home office 4. Review your W-2 withholdings at the beginning of the year. If you owed taxes last year, you could increase your withholdings at work to make up for the difference. It’s always easier to pay a little bit as you go, rather than all at one time.

5. Consider using technology to keep track of your expenses each month. Mint.com is one of my favorites. It connects with your online banking accounts, and all you have to do is categorize each purchase. There’s even a smart phone app. This is very helpful if your receipts have a tendency to grow legs and “wander off.”

6. Digital file storage has come a long way as well.

Another favorite of mine is the Neat Desk scanner, which is specifically designed to scan receipts and reduce data entry time. This is a great way to organize and easily retrieve old receipts. If you’ve had trouble in the past with old receipts fading, or thermal receipts turning black, this is a great solution.

7. If you are a business owner already using QuickBooks for your business, you can set up a new file for your personal expenses without having to purchase the program again. Most banks also offer a download into QuickBooks which, again, saves on data entry time. At the end of the year, determining your personal deductions is as simple as pulling up one report.

8. Contact your tax preparer early. This will give you and your accountant more time to ask questions and review.

There are also a few tax deductions that can be made after the end of the year, but before April 15th, which could help if you realize you owe taxes.

We all know the old adage: The only thing certain in life is death and taxes. Tax time doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few proactive habits during the year, you can file quickly and on-time. And hopefully get a nice refund check.

ReDESIGNS by Ava “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas. Just like the ones I used to know.

Where the tree tops glisten, and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow.” ~ Irving Berlin “It’s been around here a long time” is a statement that my mom and I chuckle about at least once or twice when I am visiting with her. Mom, who just turned 88 in November, not only has been around for a long time, but most of her household belongings have been, too. As I put up Christmas decorations in my home last week, “it’s been around here a long time” were words I was uttering about my own stuff. The ornaments on the small tree in the kitchen, the paper-maché Nativity, the Santas gathered on the mantle and sofa table, our handmade stockings hung on the mantle, a few framed counted cross-stitch Christmas pieces, the wreath by the back door, and family photos of past Christmases, all remind me that I, too, have some things that have been around here a long time.

Each year as I pull out our decorations, I sort through them and decide on the ones I’ll use, the ones that need to be discarded, and the ones I’ll take to consignment. Some have sentimental value and I’ll always try to find a place to display them. I admit I do not need to buy another decoration! But I do buy a few things each year to

refresh the ones that have been around here a long time.

A few ideas to help you refresh decorations that have been around your house for a long time: • Dress up that tired wreath you have been using on the front door with a new bow and maybe red berries or beaded fruit.

• Add small Christmas trees to your collections. They are a nice addition to your Santa collection or even the collection of Christmas china in your hutch.

• Display your antique ornaments in pretty bowls or hurricane vases instead of putting them on your tree. Mix in some beads, greenery or pinecones.

• Cut evergreens from your yard and add to your arrangements for a fresh and inexpensive decoration.

• Spice things up a bit by rearranging your decorations and how you display them in your home. This year I used some of my smallest Santas on the chest in our foyer instead of the usual Nativity. This year the Nativity is displayed on the tea table in the dining room.

Most of all – have fun decorating your home.

It had been on the racks for a while because people didn't give it a chance. After seeing it on one of our models, it was snatched up right away!”

Something Old, Something New

"I opened Shea's Consign & Design (named after my only child, Shealin) on September 1st of this year," said Cindy Ashburn, owner. "My husband and I own Ashburn Tile in Lexington. I have always taken care of all the office work for the company with my office being in the home. This was always great for my family so I could be home with my daughter through her school years. She has since graduated and started college. I seemed to be at home a lot by myself and was feeling less needed, so I began the quest for a little business of my own. I came across this beautiful little house on Harvey Street offered by The House of Plants. It was the perfect place to start my new business. I got started, and took with me inspiration from watching my husband grow the tile company over the years, doing something I love. This, for me, is decorating, and doing so with new and used pieces and mixing modern with antiques. I had always leaned toward the modern side of furniture until my grandmother passed away and I was given her hall tree. I had wanted this beautiful hall tree and remembered her story of how she would step up on her tip toes when she was a child trying to see herself in the mirror. Now it sits in my home with my modern pieces, and the mix is fabulous."

This mixture of old and new is evident at Shea's. "We have an eclectic mix of antiques and modern furniture," said Cindy.

"We have new furniture, ranging in price from $300 to $700, and a wonderful selection of unique antiques, some consigned and others collected."

Cindy loves having her own business. "I now get to work with Shealin here at the shop a couple days a week, which is nice to have that time together. She is quite busy with school work, so my sister, Resa, has joined the fun and will be another smiling face around the shop."

Kim Buccino was raised by a father who believed “if you see a need, fill it,” no matter if meeting that need means a financial contribution or making one’s time available through giving back. “Michael and I have always believed in ‘paying it forward’ and helping others in need, however you can. When we had a box full of football cleats from our son’s years of playing for the Forsyth County Broncos, we decided to take them to the field and see if any other kid could use them. It was that idea of ‘recycling’ and how the consignment of items we all use, from clothes, to home accessories, to furniture, to yes, even jerseys and cleats led us to opening Invio Consignment Shoppe,” Kim stated. Opening a new business can be hard on a family; however, Kim and Michael have seen their family step up to the challenges.

“Consignment shopping is such a great alternative to regular retail shopping,” said Julie Hunter, owner of Siss-A-Friss. “You won't have to fight the crowds, search for parking spaces, or wake up early to hopefully snag a great deal, because we always have great deals! In addition, consignment shopping is helping small businesses and communities grow. You won't get that emotional connection at a store at the mall. When we sell items, our consigners get 50% profit, so it's helping our shop and our consigners.”

To stay ahead of the competition, Siss-A-Friss offers several unique ways to enhance the buying experience. “We offer our customers a few different ways to shop with us,” said Hunter. “In addition to shopping in the store, we offer shipping options, and customers can give us their card numbers over the phone to pay for items that we will hold for them until they arrange pick-up. We have a Facebook page where we post different items in the shop, so people don’t even have to leave their homes to shop with us. If customers are searching for particular items, we simply get their contact information and give them a call if we get in what they are looking for.”

Part of what allows Hunter to offer this option is because of the great relationship she has with her customers. “We now know lots of our regular customers by name,” said Hunter. “We know about their families, pets, what they usually shop for, things they may be going through in their lives that we pray about. It's wonderful to have that connection.”

For a small shop, we offer lots of different merchandise. We have baby, teen and women’s clothing and accessories, shoes, scarves, jewelry, handmade hair bows, décor, home goods, baby equipment, toys, books, DVDs, games, etc. We get items in daily, so you never know what may come through the door. Although we do receive inventory all the time, we are selective in what we accept: only items that are new, like new, and very gently used, in season and in style.”

To celebrate the season, Siss-A-Friss is hosting something extra special! “We will be holding a Christmas party on Saturday, December 8th,” said Hunter.

he historic district of West End in Winston-Salem is decking the halls and the neighborhood for their biennial Historic Holiday Homes Tour, which takes place this year on Sunday, December 9th. This festive event is a great opportunity to view inside some historic homes and interesting sites decked out for the holidays.

The tour also offers visitors an up-close view of the forgotten woodcarvings recently uncovered in the original chapel of Centenary United Methodist Church, as well as a review of the designs for the high-end residences planned for the former YWCA property.

The West End neighborhood, known as "Winston-Salem's Front Porch," is one of the few National Register historic districts in the city of Winston-Salem and is home to a variety of architectural styles, with many homes over a century old. Every two years, neighbors come together to welcome others into a select group of homes that represent the diverse array of styles in the district.

Realtor and home restorer Toni Phillips has seen exciting changes take place in the neighborhood since she moved there 10 years ago. "Block by block, I've seen houses renovated and restored to their original glory. All the exciting activity downtown is making our neighborhood an even better place to live. People enjoy being able to walk to parks, restaurants and now even baseball games," she said.

People mainly need storage when they sell their home and are looking for a new home but have not found that perfect one; or the new house they are building is not finished, so they have to move some items to an apartment and the rest to storage. We do have permanent storage for people that like to store Christmas items, Halloween decorations and other stuff.”

ach month, we feature a different restaurant review under this column, Rosey’s Review. But who is Rosey? Well…we’re not going to tell…we’ll just say that Rosey is a valuable member of our team, having been with Forsyth Woman for a very long time.

She is a staple in our pages, providing a valuable service to the community by offering mouthwatering-descriptions of various unique and locally owned restaurants in WinstonSalem. And being in the South, we have some fantastic food to sample and her descriptions have helped to introduce many readers to some of the great eateries in Forsyth County. Indulge us a moment while we recap and remind you of some of the past year’s Rosey’s Reviews.

In January,, Rosey introduced readers to District Rooftop Bar and Grrille. When it comes to dining with atmosphere, you’d be hard pressed to find a restaurant with such a magnificent view of the downtown skyline. Rosey described pickled tomato chips served with remoulade and then focused on a long-time Southern favorite, fried chicken and waffles. But like any reasonable person, my personal focus of the review was on dessert! Banana pudding and three-layer chocolate cake were described as “amazing.”

Big Shotz Tavern was reviewed in April. Having been a longtime advertising partner for Forsyth Woman, we are always happy to talk about a great business with a commitment to excellent food in a fun, familyfriendly environment. Big Shotz Tavern surprised Rosey’s palette with their fish tacos,which she found to be a great mixture of flavors. But the old Southern favorite, Shrimp and Grits, really

blew Rosey away! “It was an impeccable mixture of flavors that was probably one of the best that I have ever had.”

Tomo’E Steakhouse was the featured restaurant in Rosey’s Review for June. Rosey shared that a Japanese restaurant may not be the first restaurant one would think of for summer, but I have to say, I think a Japanese restaurant is good anytime! (And if anyone wants to share that opinion with my husband, along with a wink-wink, nudge-nudge, please be my guest!) At Tomo’E Steakhouse, Rosey enjoyed a variety of offerings, including a special sushi roll made from shrimp wrapped in rice, with sliced crab rolled on the outside. Rosey recommends Tomo’E Steakhouse for a great meal, coupled with great entertainment from talented chefs!

In August, Rosey introduced us to Mac &Nelli’s.

An exciting new restaurant in the community, Rosey and her family enjoyed a wide variety of appetizers and almost filled up before the meal came! They also enjoyed a variety of entrees, including Maryland style crab cakes, salmon, filet Oscar, and beef stroganoff. But, if I may interject – my personal favorite at Mac &Nelli’s is the artichoke and brie pizza. An amazing combination of flavors that I would have never expected! But, being on the perpetual diet, I didn’t get to try the dessert that had Rosey raving!

Rosey’s description of the ice cream skillet cookie is enough to make any weight-conscious person go weak in the knees.

Rosey visited The Hickory Room in September and was not disappointed! Rosey described the ambiance of the restaurant as “upscale meets

rustic…cozy yet classy.” She sampled a variety of tasty delights and even (GASP!) gave them credit for making a better pimento cheese than her grandmother! The carving station featured meats that had been smoked with hickory wood and according to Rosey, the rib-eye was “juicy and flavorful!”

Spring House Restaurant, Kitchen, and Bar got a visit from Rosey in October. A wonderfully historic restaurant, with a story as rich as its cuisine, Rosey had nothing but rave reviews for this wonderful eatery! She and her family sampled Chilled Cucumber Gazpacho, Garlic Ginger Salmon Salad, Gertude’s Favorite Panini, and their son was even happy with the Kids’ Fried Shrimp plate! And in my opinion, if you have a restaurant that offers high-caliber cuisine that even the kids will like – you’ve found a winner!

And true to the holiday spirit that permeates the air, Rosey reviewed two of my personal favorites in November: Tart Sweets Homemade Cakes and Candies and Heavenly Cheesecakes by Becky.

Chelsea Tart (Tart Sweets) and Becky Brown (Heavenly Cheesecakes by Becky) brought a variety of their goodies to Rosey at her work to be sampled by her and her co-workers. These delectable desserts were sampled with gusto, gauging by the quotes Rosey included in her review from the various tasters. Many would be happy to receive these sweet treats as holiday gifts!

Getting the Right Gift from Your Santa By Omar & Christie

I

f you are fortunate enough to be in a relationship during the holiday season, you may also be fortunate enough to receive a holiday present from your special someone.

This could be a very exciting prospect, both receiving and giving a present, depending on how long you have been dating, how well your Santa knows you and how well you know your Santa, and how openly you communicate with each other. Receiving just the right present from your fairly new Mr. Right can turn into a very happy surprise or a very awkward moment of silence, followed by a false smile, if you have unwrapped a dud. Avoiding the dud moment can make for a merrier holiday season.

You may be asking yourself if you should even exchange presents this holiday season.

A common sense answer to that question could be “yes” if: 1. You have had a few dates and find him interesting and feel the beginning of some “relationship chemistry”; 2. You have been dating about 3 months and may have shared some of that chemistry firsthand; 3. You have been dating about 6 months and have been on a few trips together, enjoy the chemistry, and know each other well.; 4. You have been dating about 9 months or longer, so exchanging gifts is a “no brainer”! If you find your relationship in one of these “yes” categories, the next step is to communicate with your partner about your decision to buy a gift. Nothing says bah humbug more than an unequal exchange of holiday gift-giving because you assumed that your partner read your mind about what you want for Christmas. And, as fate may have it, some men need a little education on appropriate gifts to accurately represent the relationship status, your wants, and their thoughtfulness (we hope).

Whether or not a gift hits the mark for you can depend on several factors, including the man’s past relationship experiences, time commitments to work or children, financial constraints, and the ability of both parties to communicate honestly about expectations and desires. You may unwrap an

engagement ring after only 5-6 months of dating and only be ready for a wrist watch; or you may really want to unwrap a ring after 5-6 months of dating and, instead, receive a year’s supply of lattes at Starbucks.

Some gifts may shout “thoughtfulness”, like your gift of his favorite homemade cookies and a subscription to Men’s Health, but if he reciprocates with 2-carat diamond stud earrings then he may be shouting something less complimentary. You may want to scream, and not in the good way, when you receive a gym membership to help you with the “happy in your relationship pounds” that occasionally sneak up on a happy couple.

Maybe you have been dating for less than a month and his present to you is a sexy little almost-nothing from Victoria’s Secret which suggests a desire to speed things along, when you are wanting a slower pace. What if he shows up on your doorstep after only a few dates, wearing nothing but a holiday bow, and a small bow at that?

A few tips on gift-giving can help you avoid a holiday gift mismatch. Most men and

women love gifts that are surprises, that show time and effort, and that are thoughtful reminders of your relationship. If you have been dating for about 1 month then select an inexpensive gift that is somewhat personal, but useful (framed picture of the two of you, earrings or golf balls versus a Tag watch or designer purse). If you have been dating exclusively for about 3 months then try something that is very personal and that shows you care about their interests and hobbies (cuff links, monogrammed shirt, book with an inscription, spa day). At 6-9 months, some couples may be thinking about remaining exclusive and gifting for the long haul (ring, vacation, expensive watch). Not every couple is ready to consider a ring or any other sign of lasting commitment quite this soon and that is another reason why communication plays a central role in helping your Santa choose the right gift for you, no matter how long you have been dating.

Remember that some gifts are never “right”, like a case of beer, box of condoms, or lottery card from a gas station. Santa should never put those in your stocking!

Keeping a White Christmas from Turning into a Blue One loneliness may be avoided by saying “yes,” not “no,” to holiday opportunities to help others and to be social. Try ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, adopting a family who needs a little extra support during the holidays, or participating in a toy drive.

The leaves are almost gone, the days are shorter and Christmas is right around the corner. This time of year can be full of excitement and joy for neighbors, friends, and family. But for many, the upcoming holidays can bring stress, loneliness, and even depression, all of which can negatively impact health and wellness. The holidays can look much brighter and less “blue” by paying attention to a few health tips this winter.

A simple, but true, piece of advice is to never wish for time, whether it’s a week or a season, to rush by. This advice comes from an author that is probably older than most of this article’s readers, and who has learned that the older you get, the faster that clock seems to tick. So appreciate every Monday just like it was a Friday, every winter just like it was spring,

and every minute of every holiday as if it was your last.

How do you accomplish this with Christmas only a month away and the burden of getting ready for all that the season demands? As your calendar begins to fill up with shopping, parties, family gettogethers, and church outings, your heart can fill up with a sense of dread and stress. Another simple, but true, bit of advice is to say “no” to opportunities that may not be a priority to your and your family’s holiday happiness (better say “yes” to the in-laws, though, if you have them). Holiday traditions spent with family or friends de-stressing can be as unplanned as driving through neighborhoods to see Christmas decorations, visiting the Lights at Tanglewood, or wrapping presents in front of a fire. For some, depression or

Holiday schedules can tempt you to replace your regular workout routine with a trip to the mall or to your neighbor’s holiday party. The gym or YMCA will always be waiting for you in January, right? Right – the gym will be waiting for you to show up in January with that extra five pounds that most people gain over the holidays, along with the stress and depression over the weight gain. Why not continue to make exercise a priority throughout the winter and benefit from the endorphin release, calorie burning, and social interaction that can result from regular workouts?

That early morning trip to the YMCA will pay off in the New Year!

Maintaining a sensible diet during the holidays is a necessary partner to regular exercise. Temptation pulls on you at every turn – parties, family gatherings and office luncheons all have your favorite dessert or sausage balls, or iced Christmas cookies. Weight gain, mood

swings, and disappointment are the result of too many trips to the buffet for that processed treat or goody made with refined sugar. The key to avoiding the holiday “five pounds” is portion control. Enjoy the party, but limit the calorie intake (remember that you have to burn 3,500 calories to rid your body of one pound of extra weight). Try eating a healthy snack before the party to lessen your hunger temptations during the occasion. If you indulge in too many treats, help lessen the impact by exercising those calories away. Getting some exercise outside in the sunshine can also help keep the winter blues from darkening your holiday mood. Grab your dog, your kids, your neighbor, or your holiday honey and take a walk outside in the sunshine!

This holiday season can be a time to give thanks, which is a great way to start each day, even if the only thing you can be thankful for is that your feet hit the floor and can move you to the coffee pot.

Blessings sometimes come in small, often overlooked, packages that are disguised as everyday occurrences.

Embrace the joy of each holiday event, stop to notice each holiday smile, and resist the urge to wish the winter away. Spring will come soon enough (and maybe too soon for those folks who gained more than the holiday five pounds)! Happy holidays!

DR. LAURA RAMSAY Dr. Ramsay was born and raised on her parents’ farm in Waynesville, North Carolina. After a professional career in classical ballet with the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, she returned home to North Carolina WomanCare to pursue a career in medicine. She graduated magna cum laude at UNC-Asheville, and she subsequently obtained a Health Professions Scholarship with the US Navy to attend East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine.

Dr. Ramsay completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During residency, she received two prestigious awards for teaching and the Special Excellence Award for Endoscopic Procedures.

Dr. Ramsay then served four years of active duty service in the US Navy, achieving the rank of LCDR. During that time, she was placed in charge of training for all Obstetrics and Gynecology students at the Uniformed Services University. She held the position of Assistant Professor, and was awarded the 2011 National Faculty Award. Upon completion of her military service, she was additionally awarded the Meritorious Service Medal from the US Navy for the work she did with Wounded Warriors, their families, and the future physicians who serve them.

Dr. Ramsay is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Her main interests are in adolescent health care, eating disorders, exercise in pregnancy, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

She is married to Dr. David Ramsay, who practices Gastroenterology at Digestive Health Specialists. They have two children.

Her hobbies include dancing, yoga, pilates, and anything that gets her outdoors.

oughly 95% of the US population celebrates Christmas and of that – only 1% are actually ready for the holidays by the time they arrive.

Actually, I made that statistic up – but we all know that one person who actually has their Christmas gifts bought and wrapped by September. And we can all agree that we feel particularly resentful towards those people, especially as the holidays arrive earlier and earlier each year. I believe I saw the first Christmas tree of the year sometime around Fourth of July…

The BIG “WHOOP”

In 2011, approximately 19,000 cases of pertussis infections were reported, with many more undiagnosed and unreported. Pertussis, better known as whooping cough, is a respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. Pertussis is a very contagious disease and is described as uncontrollable, violent coughing fits that make it difficult to breathe. A deep “whooping” sound is often heard when the person is suddenly able to take in a breath. Serious complications can also develop, increasing morbidity and mortality, especially in infants and young children.

Transmission & Symptoms

Diagnosis

Pertussis can only spread person to person. An infected person usually spreads it by coughing or sneezing. Those in close contact then breathe in the pertussis bacteria and become infected.

Symptoms usually develop within 7-10 days after exposure. The progression of the disease is as follows:

Pertussis infections can be difficult to identify and manage because clinical symptoms can mimic those of other respiratory infections.

Pertussis is diagnosed by first taking into consideration whether a person has been exposed to pertussis. A history of signs and symptoms are taken and a physical examination is conducted.

Laboratory tests are taken, including culturing a sample of throat secretions and performing antibody tests on blood samples.

• Stage 1 – Catarrhal stage: runny nose, low-grade fever, mild, occasional cough – highly contagious; may last 1 to 2 weeks.

• Stage 2 – Paroxysmal stage: fits of numerous, rapid coughs followed by “whoop” sound; vomiting and exhaustion after coughing fits (called paroxysms). Lasts from 1 to 6 weeks, may extend to 10 weeks.

• Stage 3 – Convalescent stage: recovery is gradual. Coughing lessens but fits of coughing may return. Lasts about 2 to 3 weeks; susceptible to other respiratory infections for many.

Pertussis is a more severe and potentially fatal illness in infants and young children. This population is more likely to need hospitalization. Of those infants who are hospitalized, complications such as pneumonia, convulsions, apnea (stopped breathing), encephalopathy (brain disease) and death have been reported.

Treatment Early detection and treatment of pertussis is very important. Early treatment with antibiotics may make the infection less severe and prevent the spread of the infection, but are only useful in the first two weeks, preferably before the coughing fits begin. After three weeks, antibiotics will not alter the course of the illness because the bacteria are no longer in the body. However, symptoms will still be present due to the damage caused by the bacteria. If indicated, a full treatment course with a macrolide antibiotic is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control [CDC]. An antibiotic course should also be administered to close contacts within three weeks of exposure.

Other therapies, such as bronchodilators and cough suppressants provide no real benefit against the coughing fits associated with pertussis.

Prevention The primary way to protect oneself from the pertussis infection is immunization. Childhood immunization with the DTaP vaccine (acellular pertussis vaccine combined with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids) is a series of 5 shots. The first three are given when an infant is 2, 4 and 6 months of age. The fourth is given between 15-18 months of age and the fifth is given before a child starts school, at 46 years of age. Between the ages of 11-12, a Tdap is recommended.

The protection of the childhood vaccine fades overtime, thus it’s important that preteens receive the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) with all individuals receiving the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) booster every 10 years throughout life.

An adult 19 years or older should get a Td booster every 10 years.

An adult who has not been previously vaccinated with Tdap should receive Tdap in replace of the next Td booster dose. It is also recommended that pregnant women who were not previously vaccinated with Tdap receive one during the third trimester or late second trimester.

Although the pertussis vaccines are highly effective, there is still a chance that someone who is fully vaccinated can become infected.

However, the disease will be more severe in a person who has not been vaccinated than a person who has been vaccinated.

Since the development of the pertussis vaccine, the incidence of pertussis has drastically reduced the mortality rate among infants and young children. However, pertussis still remains the most common disease in the United States that can be prevented by vaccination. All individuals are recommended to get immunized against pertussis.

Early detection and treatment is important to lessen the severity and its spread to others. With this in mind, better recognition and control of pertussis outbreaks will lead to improved health outcomes.

By Allison Pennell Lighted garland is hanging from the ceiling. Santas, snowmen, and Christmas trees of all colors and sizes line shelves around the store.

Even the pink “glamingos” (flamingos with seasonal flare) are dressed and “glammed” with sparkling tinsel and a Santa’s hat— ready for the season to commence.

Gerald and Renna Welborn, owners of Ketchie Creek Bakery and Café in Mocksville, are ready for their bakery’s biggest months. The staff will be preparing countless deli trays, sandwich trays, and boxed lunches for holiday parties and corporate lunches.

And of course, let’s not forget the popular gingerbread houses. In early November, bakers at Ketchie Creek Bakery and Café started hand-rolling gingerbread to create this holiday favorite, and they plan to make 175.

The Welborns say these completely edible treats that are available in two sizes, 4x4 and 6x6, are shipped all over the country. “People who order them, reorder them,” they said. “We can even personalize the gingerbread houses with the name over the door.”

“Stacks of Snacks” and gift baskets that are available year-round also are popular sellers at holiday time.

the bakery has personally selected. The gift baskets, however, can be customized to an individual’s tastes and vary in sizes.

This holiday season will be the fifth that the Welborns have embraced as owners of the bakery, which derives about 60 percent of its business from bakery items and 40 percent from deli and gift shop sales.

Ketchie Creek Bakery, a household name almost since its inception 30 years ago, has been owned by this young couple since June 2008.

While the Welborns had talked for years about opening their own restaurant, it wasn’t something they studied in college at Appalachian State University. Renna had graduated with a degree in elementary education and Gerald had graduated with a degree in business.

However, they both gained valuable experience working in the food industry during college, not to mention the active roles they both played in assisting their parents and siblings with meals at home while growing up.

After college graduation, though, these high school sweethearts pursued their chosen careers and then were married several years later.

“During this time, we cooked every day,” Renna said. “We were always

trying to create our own recipes, as well as recreate food from the restaurants where we had worked.”

They even catered some events for friends and family, using their small kitchen in the Ardmore community where they lived in Winston-Salem. “There were a few big parties where we served up to 150 people,” Gerald said. “We served heavy hors d’oeuvres… anything from crab cakes to tenderloin to homemade pimento cheese.”

So, when a mutual friend of the Welborns and Debbie Koontz, the original owner of Ketchie Creek, met with them in the fall of 2007 about buying the bakery, the concept wasn’t too far-fetched. “We fell in love with the bakery,” Gerald said. “We realized we missed it (the food industry) once we were in our careers.”

“If you have a love for it, you stay or come back to it like we did; otherwise, it’s just a job,” Renna added. In June of 2008, this much loved bakery became theirs.

the couple has taken advantage of the advances in technology by offering online ordering for items that can be picked up or delivered to surrounding counties for a fee.

The deli, dessert, and catering menus are available on the website as well and can be downloaded. In addition, the public can also follow the bakery on Facebook to see the most updated information about the business.

What’s next for Ketchie Creek Bakery and Café? Will the WinstonSalem area ever see a Ketchie Creek Bakery and Café? The Welborns say customers often ask this question. While it’s not something they have actively pursued, they agree it wouldn’t be out of the question.

The Welborns said an extra bonus is the flexibility the business gives them in the off seasons because it allows them to spend more time with their girls: Renna Margaret, 3 years, and Kate, 4 months.

Now, four and a half years later, the same food, quality, and family atmosphere remain the same. In fact, Ketchie Creek Bakery and Café was recognized in the Our State magazine two years ago for its fiveflavor pound cake.

The Welborns have simply added on to the deli, bakery, and beverage offerings as a result of their own ideas, and even suggestions from staff and customers. Gourmet brownies are an addition to the dessert menu, as well as new cake flavors, and a broader selection of cupcakes. The beverage selection now includes smoothies and a full espresso menu.

Last Christmas, the bakery introduced “Cake in a Jar,” an idea formulated by Renna and a close friend who now lives in New York.

The idea spawned out of the necessity of her friend to have access to these yummy cakes. “I want you to be able to ship me cake!” she recalls her friend exclaiming.

Thus, “Cake in a Jar” is now available in any of the more than 30 cake and icing combinations and can be shipped anywhere in the country.

And if that weren’t enough, last month the Welborns added a Moravian-style chicken pie available as a slice, or as whole pie. Also,

VO I C E A Story About Returning to School…At Any Age

By Wendee Goodman ow often have you heard one woman tell another woman that she couldn’t possibly go back to school due to her age?

As the years roll by, some women think they can’t learn, they can’t remember, or they might not be able to handle the new technologies.

At the age of 59, no one in Janet’s family was surprised that she decided to begin pursuing a graduate degree in Library and Information Studies at UNC Greensboro.

“A woman is as old as she feels . . . not so much physically, but mentally,” Janet Shepherd said. While Janet is the oldest student in her class, she said she can bring something to the class discussion that can only come from years of experience. For Janet, going back to school is hard work, but it is invigorating and rewarding at this time in her life.

What I love most about my job is after 40 years in the workforce, now I get to do everything I love every single day when I go to work. I don’t think it’s ever too late to make the effort to do something that maybe you never had the chance to do before. Don’t let age be the factor that keeps you from doing something you always wanted to do but didn’t have the chance.

After teaching middle school for 25 years, Janet said she knew her time teaching in the classroom was drawing to a close. Nowhere near retirement, she wondered what she could do. After dabbling at an office job for which she says she was quite ill-suited, Janet remembered that one of the places she had always loved being in was the library.

With a little encouragement from a dear friend who is a media coordinator, and her mother, Janet called the UNC-G Library and Information Studies department on a Thursday. The very next day she had an advisory meeting and started classes on Monday night!

Janet said she was always one to move quickly and enrolled in three graduate classes – one on campus and two online. Her advisor tried to talk her out of it, but Janet said, “Oh, I can do it – no problem.” As she began her studies, she found her evening class quite challenging because she was not accustomed to learning, or even being out, in the evening. Her next challenge was the online courses –- a totally new experience for her.

Most recently Janet accepted a job at the Forsyth County Public Library and has begun taking her classes at a more palatable rate.

Janet said she is working in the perfect place, noting that those working in the downtown location are like family. Janet said she was welcomed as a new employee and the warmth she continues to feel each day is quite special. Janet is learning to be the children’s librarian and has coworkers that are guiding and teaching her along the way.

Janet said, “I wished I could do a Spock’s mind meld on each one of them and take everything they know for my own!”

Janet said that she feels fulfilled as a person when she can be part of another person’s growth and learning. In the library, she is a teacher and a librarian. During story time, Janet watches children’s eyes widen with delight as they listen to their favorite story or dance to a song like the “Toot Ta.” Janet said, “I am around children from the time I arrive at work until I leave and nothing could be better than that!”

Women Helping Women

ince its founding in 2006, the Women’s Fund of WinstonSalem has brought together women who care deeply about the economic and social well-being of women and girls in Forsyth County.

Whether passionate about education, economic security, health and safety, or leadership, over 1,400 of the Fund’s members have come together to translate their passion into positive action through the power of collective giving. The Fund takes a multi-pronged approach to achieving their vision: investing in research on women’s circumstances and needs, raising awareness of key issues impacting women and girls through education and engagement, and grant making.

Using the pooled resources of its members, the Women’s Fund makes grants to programs that support women and girls. In the past five years of grantmaking, the Fund has received over $2,943,000 in requests for funding and has awarded 49 grants, investing nearly $750,000 in the community. Early grants focused primarily on providing direct services. Over the years, the Fund has attempted to shift its focus to address the root causes of problems and create social change. In addition, since 2010, the group’s grantmaking has been grounded in the findings of the Fund’s landmark research report Through a Gender Lens: The Economic Security of Women and Girls in Forsyth County.

At their seventh annual luncheon, held at the Benton Convention Center on November 28, the Fund released a report entitled The Impact of Passionate Giving.

The report looks at the impact of the organization’s early grantmaking in four primary categories: Educating and Empowering Girls and Women The importance of educating and empowering girls and women cannot be overstated. Research consistently shows that youth are less likely to engage in high-risk behaviors (alcohol and drug use, sexual activity, violence) or find themselves at risk for other problems such as depression, suicide, anti-social behavior, and school failure, when they have a strong set of developmental assets in their life. Developmental assets include things

discipline methods, and parental advocacy and support help to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors against risk factors such as substance abuse, premature sexual activity or criminal behavior. Regardless of family structure, it is important to support women in their varied family roles and facilitate the implementation of programs that strengthen and support families.

There have been seven grants made in this area, totaling $119,135 and directly impacting 680 women and girls. such as support from adults and social systems, a sense of empowerment and boundaries, positive values, social competencies and skills, a positive identity, a commitment to learning, and constructive use of time.

Grant making in this category is the largest among the four key areas. The Women’s Fund has made a total of 13 grants in the category, totaling $206,709 and directly impacting 843 women and girls in our community.

Helping Homeless and Low-Income Women Become Economically Secure Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Of the individuals in our community unable to meet some basic need, and therefore seeking emergency aid, 68% are women.

Through a Gender Lens found that women are disproportionately affected by poverty in Forsyth County (16.1% of all females compared to 12.5% of all males live in poverty). Four in ten families headed by single mothers in our community live in poverty—a higher poverty rate than counterparts statewide and nationally.

Over the past five years, the Fund has made nine grants in this category, totaling $190,188 and directly impacting 388 women and girls.

Strengthening and Supporting Families Strong family bonds provide a vital support system to the healthy development of children and youth.

Protecting Women’s Health and Safety Despite a higher incidence of breast cancer among white women, women of color die from the disease at four times the rate of white women—a disparity largely caused by late detection. In addition, teen-dating violence impacts approximately one in five female high school students in our community. In 2011, the Winston-Salem Police Department reported 48 out of 103 victims of rape were under the age of 20.

Over 400 cases per year of domestic violence are reported where children are present in the household. Health disparities, access to quality, affordable healthcare and the responsibility of securing healthcare for the family are issues often directly linked to a woman’s level of economic security.

The Women’s Fund grant making in this critical category consists of five grants, totaling $113,944 and directly impacting 515 women and girls.

While the Women’s Fund of WinstonSalem has made a significant impact on the lives of girls and women in our community in the past five years, there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done. Forsyth Diabetes Center Gets DMAPP Grant for Diabetes Education and Prevention

It is estimated that nearly 30 million people, or 10% of the American population, have diabetes.

This disease occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or when the insulin produced is not recognized by the cells, which leads to high blood sugar. Because diabetes requires constant blood sugar level checks, it can be expensive to monitor. Unfortunately, it is thought that nearly 700,000 adults in North Carolina have diabetes, while another nearly 150,000 have diabetes but are unaware they have it.

Additionally, more than 450,000 adults in the state have pre-diabetes.

Special efforts will be made to enroll higher risk groups – low-income adults, African-Americans, Hispanics and women – who often lack access to quality services. These individuals will be engaged in group educational sessions alongside adults who have sufficient insurance or who can afford the out-of-pocket fee.”

These statistics are staggering and have led to a heightened sense of need within the local medical community. Luckily, the Forsyth Diabetes Center in Winston-Salem has received a three-year grant to provide diabetes education and diabetes prevention to the less fortunate who live in Forsyth County.

“This DMAPP initiative will provide culturally appropriate education, treatment support and follow-up to a total of 500 underserved adults in Forsyth County,” said Cathy ReederMcIntosh, assistant nurse

Those who qualify for the grant services will start with an individual visit to discuss their needs and have a free A1c lab test (measure of blood sugar average) if they haven’t already had one recently. During the visit, they will also receive either diabetes education or prevention counseling provided by certified diabetes educators who are registered nurses and registered dietitians. At a follow-up visit three months later, the patient receives a repeat A1c lab test and additional counseling.

working with our Forsyth Medical Center Foundation and putting together data on diabetes to show the need for assistance in the low-income population,” said Cathy. “The hospital’s mission is to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time. To accomplish this, Forsyth Diabetes Center offers numerous educational opportunities to learn about managing diabetes. We provide programs for anyone living with diabetes, no matter when they were diagnosed, as well as for those at risk for diabetes. We help patients use proven treatment tools for positive lifestyle changes including healthy eating, exercise, behavior change processes and stress management in order to prevent or lessen diabetes and related complications. Our participants are different from the general population in that racial and ethnic minorities have a higher prevalence of diabetes. For minorities born in the United States in 2000, the estimated lifetime risk of developing diabetes is close to 50 percent for women and 40 percent for men. Diabetes prevalence is up to three times higher in adults with incomes less than $15,000 compared to adults who earn $75,000 or more. To address this disparity, grant funds are available to support this more challenged population.”

The long-term goal for this grant is to decrease risks of complications from diabetes, which include heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and amputation and to help individuals live healthier lives.”

Cathy, a certified diabetes educator, has worked in the Diabetes Center since its opening in 1986. She has seen firsthand how many people are in need of assistance as a result of the financial requirements to manage diabetes. “We have been very successful in providing education and have positive outcomes in overall diabetes care for our current patients,” said Cathy.

“Our goals are to optimize blood glucose levels, prevent acute and chronic complications, help patients change unhealthy behaviors and improve quality

To qualify for the grant, you must have diabetes or prediabetes (confirmed by a lab test), live in Forsyth County, have a low income (up to 300% of federal poverty level according to the number of members in your household) and if you have diabetes, you must be uninsured or underinsured. If a person has pre-diabetes, he or she can be insured or uninsured.

by The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, whose mission is to improve the quality of life and quality of health for the financially needy of North Carolina. Since diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, it is important for those at risk to be aware that they have the problem, whether they have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

“Participants will be screened and enrolled through a variety of avenues,” said Cathy. “Referrals can come from physician practices, community clinics, health fairs and screenings, health departments, and discharged hospital patients, among others. Participants will receive education, training and follow-up visits for up to four months.”

Christmas Cookie Swap Favorites!

Dark Chocolate Chunk Cranberry Cookies 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup white sugar

Last year I attended my first-ever “Christmas Cookie Swap Party.” It was truly a delight to taste the vast array of cookies that everyone brought to share. Everyone has a favorite (or favorites) Christmas cookie that embodies the spirit of the season. This year, why not try and create some Christmas cookie favorites and host your own “Christmas Cookie Swap Party”? Or just make these recipes with the kids to create special Christmas memories.

However you decide to share these delectable favorites, you’re sure to be left with only the crumbs!

1 cup light brown sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups dark chocolate chips/chunks 1 cup dried cranberries 1 cup chopped pecans Directions 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2) Cream sugars, butter, and vanilla until smooth.

3) Add eggs one at a time.

4) Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl. Then combine in a large bowl with egg/sugar mixture.

5) Fold in chocolate chips, cranberries, and nuts 6) Drop by large spoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.

7) Bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are brown.

In bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy, approximately 3 to 4 minutes.

2) Add egg, and beat until completely combined. Reduce speed to low, add flour, and mix. Shape dough into 1-inch balls.

3) Place on baking sheets, spacing at least 3 inches apart. Moisten thumb with water, and gently press center of each ball to make indentation.

4) Heat jam in small saucepan over medium until melted. Spoon about 1/2 teaspoon into each indentation.

5) Bake—rotating sheet halfway through—until cookies are golden brown around edges, aproximately18 to 20 minutes.

6) Transfer to a wire rack, and let cool.

Cookies can be stored in single layers in an airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days.

Spiced Whiskey and Walnut Cookies Eggnog Cookies

2 and 1/8 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda

¾ cup butter, softened

1 teaspoon salt

1 ¼ cups white sugar

1 cup butter; room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/8 cup granulated sugar

½ cup eggnog

1/8 cup dark brown sugar

2 egg yolks

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 teaspoons bourbon

2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon baking powder

Half a bag of dark chocolate chips

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ cup chopped pecans

Directions 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2) Combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.

3) Cream sugar and butter.

Add eggnog, vanilla and egg yolks.

Beat with a mixer until smooth.

4) Add flour and beat until just combined.

5) Drop on greased cookie sheet by teaspoonfuls, 1 inch apart.

6) Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg 7) Bake for 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are light brown.

Directions 1) Mix flour, salt and baking soda.

2) In larger bowl, mix butter, sugar, vanilla and bourbon until creamy.

Slowly add eggs to butter mixture, one at a time.

3) Gradually mix flour mixture into butter mixture. Add chocolate chips and pecans.

4) Let dough sit in refrigerator for at least three days.

5) Bake at 375°F until edges are golden brown (9-10 minutes).

his is a very busy time of year.

It seems at times that the days are flying by and, before we know it, Christmas will have come and gone. As hard as it may be, it is important to slow down every now and then to take in all the beautiful aspects of the holiday season. The decorations around town, the ringing of bells near those familiar red buckets, seasonal traditions like the Candle Tea at Old Salem, Tanglewood’s Festival of Lights and beautiful songs sung by some of the most heartwarming performers known as the Star Catchers.

“The Star Catchers is a high-energy performing ensemble of special-needs adult students enrolled in the Compensatory Education program at Forsyth Tech Community College at the Stokes Opportunity Center in Walnut Cove,” said Kris Jonczak, instructor of the Compensatory Education program. “Paul Kindley and I began an ‘Arts Based Education’ program for these adults about seven years ago. We have witnessed firsthand how powerful a change the humanities can be in someone’s life. In fact, the North Carolina Community College curriculum was changed, in part, due to our dedication and commitment to offering ‘Arts Based Education.’ We have received funding from local foundations and individual donors that allow us to continue offering performances and art shows throughout our state and elsewhere. Now, every adult enrolled in the Comp Ed program throughout the state, is entitled to receive theatre, drama, music and art education.”

These students bring immense dedication and perseverance to everything they do, and Jonczak knew this would translate into a wonderful treasure for the community to share. “These ‘uniquely enabled’ adults bring so much joy and love to everything that they do, I feel as if I have been given a gift when I am with them. Through their performances, they are able to express their creativity and exuberance for life. No one

leaves a performance without being emotionally touched and encouraged to find his or her own talents and strengths.”

Not only does this group perform locally, its schedule fills long in advance outside the area as well. “Our most recent performance was at Showplace in High Point, on Saturday, November 3rd for the Fall Tournament for Special Olympics,” said Jonczak. “We performed for more than 1,200 athletes, coaches and family members.

On Thursday, December 6th, the Star Catchers will be traveling to Philadelphia to perform a Christmas show at 12pm for the members of the Philadelphia Rotary Club.

On Friday, December 14th, the Star Catchers will be performing at 6pm at the High Point Theatre prior to the North Carolina Shakes annual production of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ On Wednesday, December 19th, at the Benton Convention Center, they will be performing at 4pm for the annual Christmas for the City celebration. More than 2,000 children and adults have attended this celebration the last three years, and this year, the Star Catchers’ artwork will also be on display. These performances and others scheduled throughout the month are sure to put you in the holiday spirit!”

Jonczak’s dedication to the Star Catchers is impressive to say the least, and she has many high hopes for the future of the program. “My dream for the Star Catchers is to continue performing and let society see just how ‘special’ these folks really are,” said Jonczak. “We have been honored to perform for our governor three times. This past 4th of July, we began the day’s activities on the steps of the capitol, with our ‘Patriotic Show.’ Our latest YouTube site is the Star Catchers of Forsyth Tech if you would like to see us in action!”

Good Boundaries for Healthy Holidays!

By Susan Brooks, LPC decisions and actions may be the most effective stress buster ever for the holiday season.

Y

ou may be among those who, after Thanksgiving, travel to the North Carolina mountains to bring back “the best Christmas tree ever.” The North Carolina tree growers who have fields adjoining each other usually build fences between their properties, to ensure everyone is clear about which tree farm is whose, and which farmer you should go to when you have found the perfect tree.

Physical “boundaries” such as these are helpful; as Robert Frost famously said, “Good fences make good neighbors.”

The same idea applies to families, activities, eating, drinking, gift giving, and all of the many aspects of daily living that somehow get amplified during the holiday season. Emotional or energetic “boundaries” have the same clear effect as the farmers’ physical boundaries. Boundaries tell us when it is best for us to say “no,” or “not now” or “no more.” They are formed when we pay attention to our own limits, whether physical, emotional, or financial. Listening for our own boundaries and letting them guide our

Much of the seasonal stress I hear about in my counseling office comes from clients’ beliefs that the holidays don’t involve the normal rules for healthy living that are effective the rest of the year. There’s the guilt of not attending every event offered, especially of not attending every family gathering, even to the point of multiple gatherings in the same day. Or of not eating every holiday meal, again, sometimes multiple meals on the same day, or trying every sweet treat offered, or taking every drink served.

Then there is gift giving, which in many families has become a competitive sport.

Who can spend the most, give the grandest, make the biggest impression?

It’s as if anyone attempting to set a limit or a healthy boundary is being a “Scrooge” who grumpily dampens holiday spirits.

Media doesn’t help at all, sending a barrage of “more, more, more” messages. One suggestion I make to

clients is to limit exposure to media, including commercials and advertisements, whether on television or the internet . . . coming from any screen whatsoever.

Perhaps this year you will be able to give yourself the gift of healthy boundary setting, of acknowledging and honoring your own limits. And by the example you set, share the gift with family, friends and co-workers.

on the Ashley Kohlrus, chief experience officer at Allegacy Federal Credit Union, has been named one of the

five finalists in the Credit Union Executives Society’s (CUES) 2012 Next Top Credit Union Exec contest.

CUES highlightsand honors emerging leaders from within the credit union community and recognizes the work they are doing to advance their credit union and the movement.

Kohlrus, who is responsible for the enhancement of member experience, alignment of the synergy culture and development for employees, internal communications, and community relations, submitted details of Allegacy’s current project called ‘Mapping the Member Experience.’ The initiative reviews all aspects of member services, identifies what impressions are created along the way and where impressions may be enhanced.

Updates on the finalists’ projects will be featured on the website NextTopCreditUnionExec.com, including video of their final presentation. The public will get a chance to vote on the final presentation online on Tuesday, November 6.

Kohlrus received her undergraduate degree in Speech Communications from East Tennessee State University and her master’s degree in Leadership and Organizational Change from Pfeiffer University. She also earned a senior professional human resources certification.

Kohlrus is active in the Winston-Salem community where she volunteers with the Wake Forest University MA Mentor Program and serves on the Women's Council for Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, the NC Triad Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Board of Directors and the Maya Angelou Center for Women's Health Advisory Board. She is also a 2010 recipient of the YWCA "Women of Vision" award.

Rebecca Nussbaum, general manager of the Open Dream Ensemble, received the R. Philip Hanes Jr.

Young Leader Award from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. The award was announced at the Arts Council’s Annual Meeting on October 10. The R. Philip Hanes Jr. Young Leader Award is given each year to a person 40 years of age or younger who exemplifies volunteer dedication, contributions and leadership. As stated on the Arts Council website, Nussbaum “has spent countless hours teaching youth the importance of responsibility, learning, teamwork, determination and imagination. She is a Fellow for the A+ Schools Program, a role she has filled since 2008. In addition to her work with the Open Dream Ensemble and A+, she is a teaching artist and performer.”

“Rebecca was an excellent choice for this award,” said Lynda Lotich, interim director of the Kenan Institute for the Arts. “She is a creative, energetic and highly successful administrator and educator. We couldn’t be more thrilled that her efforts have been so justly rewarded.”

Nussbaum is an administrator, educator and flutist. She has performed with orchestras, chamber groups and as a soloist. In 2004, with the generous sponsorship of the Kenan Institute for the Arts, she helped develop the Open Dream Ensemble, a professional outreach program of the UNC School of the Arts that is comprised of professional artists who trained in dance, drama, and music at the school. Using the diverse skills of its cast, Open Dream Ensemble presents original performances and residencies to school children throughout the Southeast.

Director of the Salem College School of Music, piano professor and artist-in-residence Barbara Lister Sink has been invited to perform and conduct a masterclass and workshops in two international festivals in Sydney, Australia, in January 2013. She will perform a solo recital in the International Masterclass Festival, as well as perform a recital and conduct workshops and a masterclass for the Sydney Piano Teachers Festival, sponsored by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Invitations for recitals and presentations at these events are extended only to performers and teachers of international renown.

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music's annual Sydney Piano Teachers Festival brings some of the top instructors from across Australia and New Zealand together for classes, workshops and performances.

to our first installment of Local Vocals. This month, we introduce our new monthly series of articles aimed at reviewing local/regional musical talent – that is either based here or originated here – that isn’t necessarily mainstream. Many of the artists can be seen at local venues and concerts.

Lacy Green Lacy Green… don’t hate her for her drop-dead, beauty queen good looks – listen to her soulful, sophisticated country/bluegrass contemporary music and enjoy. She is a bright (University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill), caring and talented young woman who draws inspiration from the likes of New Grass Revival and Alison Krauss. She brings a modern twist of solid, traditional bluegrass roots and turns it into a thoughtful new genre.

Teaming up with another local celebrity, Susie, Lacy has been working on developing the soundtrack for the new movie, Susie’s Hope. If you are a local dog lover, you may know Susie’s story. She was a badly abused shepherd-pit bull mix who was rescued by the kind folks at the Guildford County Animal Shelter, and literally brought back from death’s door by the tenacity of that dedicated group of people. She was adopted by a woman who was searching for a way to recover from the trauma of a pit bull attack and found a kindred spirit in Susie. They have much in

common and have been healing each other ever since they met.

Lacy grew up in Pilot Mountain and has recently moved to Nashville but appears at Triad venues from time to time. Her record label is SwanGate Records (swangaterecords.com); Lacy’s website is lacygreen.com and Susie’s is susieshope.com.

Carter Brothers Carter Bothers is another local band currently living in Nashville. Brothers Danny and Tim are originally from High Point and have built a beautiful new studio called TreeHouse in music city. Together with band mates Dann and Adam, they test the waters of conventional country/bluegrass and have come up with a self described genre of: “Appalachian, folk, rock, funked-up, bluegrass gypsy blues music.” Whew! In concert, they provide the same energy that name implies and combine it with a gifted harmony that only genetically linked brothers could provide. Influenced by Celtic music, Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page, the Carter Brothers take a modern twist on centuries old traditional music.

Their first album release by Compass Records is an inspired piece of work called Road to Roosky. Danny tells the story of the actual road in Ireland that inspired the album on their website. His storytelling talent begins here and transfers into his music. Road to Roosky includes several guest artists of renown, including Sam Bush, Tim O’Brien and Vassar Clements, which illustrates the depth of their talent and growing respect within a very rich genre. Carter Brothers have found wide popularity in Europe (especially Ireland and Spain) so give them a listen and you, too, will be intrigued.

Exploring Holiday Celebrations in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem. A city filled with residents of all different backgrounds and ages.

With the holiday season upon us, Forsyth Woman set out to explore the diversity ofcelebrations hosted in thischarming city.

Tanglewood Festival of Lights A holiday staple in our area, the Tanglewood Festival of lights offers patrons an incredible visual experience.

Beginning Saturday, November 17th, and running through Tuesday, January 1st, the park’s rolling countryside is transformed into a winter wonderland of giant, twinkling lights and magical holiday scenes. In total, the park offers visitors over one hundred displays and over one million lights. Entering its 21st season, Tanglewood's Festival of Lights, presented by BB&T, remains one of the largest and most impressive light shows in the entire Southeast.

Jewish Festival of Lights Enjoy a different festival of lights by attending the Jewish Festival of Lights, held at Wake Forest University on Sunday, December 11th. The festival, which has taken place at the university for the past few years, commemorates the Maccabean recapture and rededication of the Jerusalem Temple in 165-164 b.c.e. The festival runs December 9th through the 13th and is free of charge to the public.

Frohliche Weihnachten - German Christmas Learn about German holiday traditions at the historic Bethabara Park’s “Frohliche Weihnachten - German Christmas.” Hosted this year on Saturday, December 1st, the day-long event offers attendees a variety of German Christmas activities. Relive the first Moravian Christmas Celebration in North Carolina, listen to memorable German carols, view hand-crafted German art and, of course, taste delectable German pastries. This holiday celebration is sure to satisfy all senses. Admission is free.

Old Salem’s “Holiday Hearthside Baking Class Continuing with the Moravian theme, learn the delicious recipes the Moravian dwellers first used by attending Old Salem’s “Holiday Hearthside Baking Class.” Using hearth cooking techniques, attendees will learn how to make a cranberry pound cake and an apple pie with an 18th century Moravian twist! While most of the goodies to take home are pastries, attendees will also learn how to make an egg-shell basket with Marzipan treats. These make beautiful decorations for Christmas trees. Registration is $34 per

person/$31 for Friends of Salem.

Official Elf Training Looking for a kid-friendly holiday event?

Santa’s helpers have arrived at the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem. Join the elves for a night of magic on Saturday, December 15th from 6-8 pm. Children can expect to play games, sing songs and make an elfthemed craft. All kids will complete an“Official Elf Training” class and earn a special certificate. A pizza dinner will be served to both parents and children. Cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members of the museum and registration is required.

Gingerbread Train Another fun event for families with children is the Gingerbread Train, also hosted at the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem. Truly, what is a holiday season without gingerbread? The event, which is hosted on December 8thfrom 1-2:30 pm, is recommended for children ages six and older. Each child will create a gingerbread train to take home. Registration is required.

Cost is $10 for child—1 adult free—and museum admission is not included. Each additional adult is $3.

Kwanzaa Finally, the Triad Cultural Arts organization is the convener of the only city-wide Kwanzaa celebration. Each night, from December 26th through January 1st, separate organizations host a variety of festivities. Cheryl Harry, the founder of Triad Cultural Arts, started the organization in 2007.

“Kwanzaa has been celebrated in Winston-Salem since 1977, when Rachel Jackson held the first Kwanzaa celebration at the East Winston Library (now Malloy Jordan Heritage Center),” explained the TCA founder. Since then, several organizations throughout the city havehosted a night dedicated to celebrating the African American holiday celebration. In 2007 TCA was asked to become the official convener of the city-wide Kwanzaa committee. Today the organization is responsible for handling all communications, marketing and scheduling. Information for this year’s Kwanzaa celebration can be found on the Triad Center Cultural Arts website at www.triadculturalarts.org.

Considering that the Twin City is such a rich and diversified place, it is easy to see how countless celebrations are hosted here. As the weather gets colder, enjoy a full cultural experience through exploring the variety of festivities this city has to offer!

How to Avoid the Holiday Weight

Trying to fit workouts in around the holidays is a challenge that she’s seen. “The most important thing is to make the time to exercise. I know schedules get hectic, but take that time for yourself and get your exercise in. Exercising during the holidays improves body image as it makes you stronger, it makes putting on those fancy clothes a joy rather than a burden,” says Hartsook.

Everyone can get tied up with family and office parties and reunions during the holidays. These crazy schedules can mess with your planned workouts. If you cannot make it to the workout, then April says to bring the workout to you! “I always tell my clients that tell me they can’t make a scheduled workout due to other obligations – create your own class at home, or Aunt Matilda’s, or Grandma’s house. Mrs. Claus was gracious enough to stop her and Santa’s busy schedule of visiting with local Forsyth County children to answer a few questions for The Last Word. You’ve seen her at the Brenner’s Children Hospital’s Festival of Trees and other events in the Triad area.

1. Most choose their occupation, but being married to Santa Claus yours was already chosen for you?

Yes, but it is something that I love! We’ve been together over 65 years and the highlight of our year is visiting with the children. Of course, Santa loves children, and I do, too. When he first started visiting with children, some would be afraid of this big man with a lot of hair in a big red suit. Me? Well, I am the grandmotherly type and children feel safe enough to come to me. I can even coax some onto Santa’s lap after showing them he’s just a big softie! If they refuse, Santa and I stand real close and let the moms and dads get that forever picture.

2. How do you handle crying babies?

I know the parents really want that forever picture, so if the child is afraid, I’ll let them come to me and we just sit and be still. It’s been my experience that just sitting quietly and talking can calm a child down. There’s no magic way to get a baby to stop crying; sometimes you just take the picture anyway and that turns out to be the favorite picture!

3. What advice would you give to moms coming to see Santa?

The best advice from me is to think twice about bringing the tiny baby to a large group coming to visit us. Santa and I may be healthy, but you don’t know how many children we’ll hug and kiss. You don’t want your little one sick on Christmas Day. Look for a smaller, more intimate setting.

4. What is your greatest obstacle as a woman?

Well, I can’t think of one. Everyone loves Mrs. Claus, and is so nice to me. Maybe it’s because of Santa’s list – we know all their secrets! Or it’s because they all know that I have Santa’s ear. And no one wants coal in their stocking. It’s always hard getting ready for Christmas but so much fun!

5. What sets you apart from other women?

I think it is my love of children. I love seeing the joy on their faces when they sit in Santa’s lap and pull on his beard. It is always so magical, the time we spend visiting with the children.

6. Where do you see women in 5 years?

Santa and I always see a vision of peace.

We’d love to see that for everyone.

7. What do you see your legacy as?

Santa and I have been doing this for a very long time; we hope our legacy is great memories for children and their parents.

8. Last, but hardest question, what’s your guilty pleasure?

I’m letting out one of Santa’s secrets, but every year after Christmas and up to my birthday in February, Santa shaves his beard just for me. I love seeing and touching his original face. After 65 years together, every year it’s always a beautiful surprise!
