As I type this month’s “View,” it’s 98 degrees. The word is HOT. My husband, Tim, works in the heat at his shop, TJ’s Body Shop. The heat normally doesn’t bother him, but even he is struggling. My son, Tanner, who is in Wilmington at college, has a part time job detailing yachts. While he’s near the water, the temperatures there are over 100! My son-in-law, Chris, who owns Chris’ Lawncare, is struggling to keep the yards he cares for green in this scorching heat. And my dear, 80-year old dad continues to brave this heat and help deliver copies of Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family magazines all over town!

My project manager’s husband has a trick for beating the heat – he imagines himself wrapped in a thick woolen sweater and blankets. They swear it works and if this heat continues, I may have to try their “mind over matter” trick.

But as unseasonably warm as it is, it really does cause some safety concerns.

Please be sure you’re drinking plenty of water and make sure that you’re using sunscreen if you’re outside! And please don’t forget your pets! Make sure they have fresh, clean water, and of course, don’t leave your dog in a car!

Do My Eyes Really Need to be Dilated?

By Dr. Vic Khemsara he dreaded eye doctor appointment! Really, it would not be too bad if only they did not dilate my pupils! Why do they put all those drops in my eyes anyway? What does it accomplish other than make me sensitive to sunlight, prevent me from going to the mall (cannot see price tags), and cause me not to be able to read for hours? Is this really necessary?

Yes, it really is necessary. First of all, dilation drops are typically a combination of two drops: one to paralyze the muscle that contracts, to make the pupil smaller and the other to stimulate the muscle that controls the iris, to make it larger or wider.

The results inhibit your eye’s ability to change focus, which is why you have trouble reading afterward. The widening of the pupil allows the doctor a better, wider window to view the back of the eye. Otherwise, the doctor would not be able to see parts of the retina. This enables the physician to view changes caused by diabetes such as bleeding, retinal changes such as tears and macular degeneration, and also provides a better view of the optic nerve to determine if your eye pressures are causing damage.

Most patients do drive after their eyes have been dilated, since the dilation only affects near vision, not the distance vision.

Sunglasses are offered to patients who have none with them because the light outside can seem brighter due to more light entering the eye, and increased glare can make driving more of a challenge. If this is especially uncomfortable for patients, then we recommend a driver come with you.

Dilation can last three to four hours or, if someone is especially sensitive, it can last until the next day. If so, do not be alarmed.

This is why a lot of working folks have their exams at the end of the day. Remember, near vision is greatly affected, making it difficult to work, especially if close-up vision is required for your job.

If you have any questions before or after a dilated eye exam or procedure, be sure to speak with your eye doctor. Dilation is not something we enjoy, but it is very necessary to receive the best eye exam and care available.

TENNIS, LADIES?

ids may not want to hear this, but before you know it, the school year will begin. Although the beginning of school signals that summer is winding down, it also means action will be heating up on the tennis courts at the Winston-Salem Open! The year’s tournament, which takes place August 22-29, features a whole week full of events and activities suited for any and every kind of tennis fan, from the die-hard to the simply curious.

Two Winston-Salem Open special events will specifically target the women of Winston-Salem and surrounding areas.

On Wednesday, August 26, USTA North Carolina and the Winston-Salem Open will present “Take It on the Rise for Ta-Tas,” a tennis clinic to benefit Earlier.org—Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. By signing up, guests will be able to participate in a tennis clinic with lunch sponsored by Panera Bread, all while supporting this important organization.

The following day on Thursday, August 27, the fifth-annual Ladies Day at the Winston-Salem Open will take place on the fourth level of Deacon Tower at BB&T Field from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Traditionally a day of brunch, fashion shows and shopping, the Winston-Salem Open is mixing things up a bit this year. For the fifth anniversary edition of Ladies Day, there will be several “How To” booths, followed by a special lunch and ending with a fashion show featuring Champion active wear and a local boutique.

“Ladies Day has proved to be a successful piece of the Winston-Salem Open experience,” Winston-Salem Open associate tournament director Amy Knudson said. “We’re thrilled to support Earlier.org with our new ‘Take It on the Rise for Ta-Tas’ special event. Both days offer a great way to get a group together—a ladies lunch group, friends from work or a book club—and come out and enjoy unique parts of the tournament and tennis afterwards.”

Tickets are available for the Ladies Day Brunch for $35 with an option of also enjoying an afternoon tennis match at 3 p.m. with a $65 ticket. Ronald McDonald House To Welcome Victory Junction REACH Team

S

ummertime across the country is vacation time, camp time, ice cream man time, and it’s definitely no school time!You might be surprised to learn this, but that’s exactly how the kids staying at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) of Winston-Salem feel too. You might also be surprised to learn that it’s not just pediatric patients staying at the house, but their siblings stay here, too, especially during summers.

Kids staying at RMH got a special treat last month – Victory Junction’s REACH camp came to the house and set up camp for a day! Patients and siblings, along with former RMH families, participated in camp activities including games, songs and an old-fashioned cookout during the day and a night of board games, movies and even a pretend campfire.

The Victory Junction team believes that every child, no matter his or her illness or disability, deserves the chance to be a kid and enjoy experiences like every other child.

The REACH program, sponsored by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, brings camp-style crafts and songs to children and families year-round at hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses in both North and South Carolina. During the summer – when children (patients and siblings) are out of school and more likely to be staying at RMH – programming is expanded to include outdoor camp games.

“The REACH partnership has been a big part of our programming for the last five years,” said Heather Rompel, Family Support Services manager at Ronald McDonald House. “It has naturally developed into longer programming during the summer to help entertain our patients and siblings and support our focus of family centered care. We love bringing the magic of camp to our families, especially after a long day at the hospital.”

The Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, Inc. strives to enhance the care and well being of children receiving treatment in our community’s medical facilities by providing “home away from home” programs and vital resources dedicated to meeting the needs of the whole family.

The Agonizing Shift

R

emember the carefree summers of childhood? Capturing lightning bugs in mason jars and wearing the sticky drool of popsicles.

Wonder-filled adventure permeated our days while Mom and Dad protected the fort.

As we fluttered around like fireflies, could we have imagined a day when our defenders would need us more than we needed them? Could we fathom the agonizing shift that loomed?

The ringer blared as I sprang out of the shower. The day’s frantic schedule already called the shots. I hesitated to answer. Begrudgingly, I huffed “hello.” A frenzied nurse panted. “Come now! Your mom is in ICU! A heart attack is imminent!”

My demanding, inflexible schedule suddenly screeched to a standstill.

Plans that seemed non-negotiable turned trivial.

My world rotated off its axis throughout the coming days. Fatigue ransacked my body. Weariness withered my soul. I forced a joyful countenance, yet my eyes puddled continuously.

Witnessing a parent’s helplessness shatters the heart. She’s the tower of strength who once protected this little girl from danger and disease.

She’s the wonder woman who once covered all the bases of motherhood like it was child’s play. My powerful protector suddenly needed my protection.

Roles shifted without warning. The kaleidoscope of responsibilities smothered my confidence. Panic crept in like a thief in the night.

On the homeward journey under the dark skies, I grabbed Abba’s words to nourish my deprived soul. “Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you”(Isaiah 43:1-2).

You see, Israel’s future appeared uncertain. Babylon held God’s people hostage. These captives spotted no hope on the horizon. Isaiah interrupted life’s insecurities with the unflinching assurance of God. Sometimes our future screams with fear. Tumultuous waves crash against our lives without warning. It steals our breath. It mocks our anchors. Yet, God’s presence hovers close. He offers intimacy amid the loneliness of night. He lovingly paves a path through the storm.

When the little girl inside collapses beneath the weight, Abba leans into our hearts. He whispers to the deepest chambers of our constitution with a certainty that interrupts life’s greatest uncertainties.

I don’t pretend that the agonizing shift comes without boatloads of stress. Just like you, some days leave me longing for simpler yesterdays when our parents ruled the day. Like you, I wearily muddle through moments that leave me grasping for even a smidgen of predictability amid these ever-changing times. Regardless, this much is undeniable.

What we know is immeasurably greater than what we don’t know.

The certainty of God’s promises is infinitely more certain than the uncertainties we face.

Despair finds a home when we become more preoccupied with life’s uncertainties than God’s unchanging certainty. This distorted fixation illuminates our fears and sabotages our strength.

Hope emerges when we steep our lives in God’s absolute certainty that interrupts every uncertainty.

Abba is a faithful Father who goes the distance. When we’re in over our head, He sticks like glue. Despite the tempest winds that threaten our boat, let us rest in knowing the certainty of God is infinitely greater still.

orsyth Woman loved catching up with Amy Cushman, owner of American Moving & Hauling in Winston-Salem, which recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. It’s easy to see why the company is a successful, wellrespected resource. If the mere thought of a home move makes you cringe, Amy and her top-notch staff can offer you peace of mind … with a smile.

FW: What prompted you to launch a moving business in the first place?

AC: I was a storage facility manager and began helping people who were storing their stuff and/or moving. I knew some strong fellows who needed work and I saw people that needed help! At first we did “labor only” and rented trucks – then we grew. I saw a need and I filled it.

FW: As a new business owner – and as a woman – what were your biggest obstacles?

FW: What sets American Moving & Hauling apart from other moving companies?

AC: It’s not an easy business – it can be physically and mentally exhausting. I had no business model so it was all “learn as you go” and trial and error. Yes, as a woman, I had more challenges, and maybe people wondered what a young woman knew about the transportation and moving industry. Often you have to exceed people’s expectations so they will take you seriously and see that you know what you’re doing!

FW: Tell us a bit about where you travel and what services you offer.

AC: That Johnny Cash song “I’ve been everywhere, man” should be our motto! We go a lot of places – mainly along the east coast and in the south, but we’ve been to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Texas and Florida – and have even been to Minnesota – so all over. We mainly do residential but don’t discriminate, so we do some commercial as well. I would say about 90% is residential and, of our customer base, I’d estimate 80% are women.

FW: Yours is obviously very much a “team” business, where loyal employees would be a must. How big is your staff?

AC: We have 14 hard-working employees at the moment and they are all great. I really love and appreciate my guys, and girl! We don’t do temporaries – we make sure all our staff is trained. It doesn’t benefit us or the customer to send inexperienced workers to move valuable belongings. Being a small company lets me be selective about my employees, too. I only want people who really care about their work, take pride in what they do and get satisfaction from doing a job right and making the customer happy.

AC: I think because we are a small, local, woman-owned business we really have a different perspective on helping people move.

Truthfully, as a woman, I do understand the need to have some physical help when moving, and from good quality people with character. I’m always telling my guys to make sure they go the extra mile for our female customers who might be making a solo move, while making them feel like their important belongings are safe.

Then they know they can count on us. At the end of a job when the customer expresses their satisfaction and appreciation for all the work that went in to scheduling, planning, coordinating and completing their move, it really does make my day!

FW: You also offer home staging services and even “de-cluttering” help – what prompted adding that to your business mix?

AC: I love design and I love for things to be clean and organized!

I think it makes life easier, too. Sometimes it take someone else’s eye to see things that would improve your daily routine OR what would really help make your home more appealing if you’re trying to sell. Home staging is a valuable tool that I enjoy being able to offer our clients. We also offer a labor-only service if you just need help re-arranging furniture in your home.

he cobalt sign has always captured my attention while driving down Frontis Street in Winston-Salem. While the name “Bleu” has intrigue, I often wondered if the same appeal was found on the inside of the restaurant. The building itself is strikingly attractive, tucked away from the busyness of Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard. A slight rain fell when my husband and I pulled into the parking lot, and I knew many others had discovered the quiet setting of Bleu Restaurant and Bar.

option of ordering one of the bar’s drink specials. Families or work colleagues could gather to enjoy dinner during the festive nature of a holiday or the celebration of a birthday. Warm temperatures arriving to Winston-Salem would encourage patrons to take advantage of the patio, where string lights contribute to the enclosed outdoor atmosphere. Friends could order one of the restaurant’s delicious desserts, which include cheesecakes, sorbets and ice creams to name a few, all made from scratch.

While grandparents were happily entertaining our children, we were pleased to have a night to enjoy dinner and each other’s company. Entering through the large doors, we were greeted with a warm welcome. It felt good to hear my husband say, “Dinner for two.” Seating was immediate, as for all who came early that particular Saturday evening. Following our host, I quickly absorbed the dark wooden tables and soft candlelight, and instantly knew the experience would be more than just a dinner out. Bleu Restaurant and Bar was pleasantly intimate. Our table was situated in front of an eye-catching wall unit that extended from the floor to the ceiling. Looking up, patrons would agree the water feature aided in a feeling of relaxation. Vibrant pieces such as the extraordinarily large vase of flowers and the colorful canvas paintings added to the restaurant’s ambiance.

Bleu Restaurant and Bar refers to its style of cuisine as “inventive American,” suitably defined as a modern take on classic and comfort food. Any patron would find plenty of choices from the menu listing tapas appetizers; salads and soups; chef entrees; and after-dinner desserts and drinks. With so many options, it personally was hard to pinpoint the most satisfying choice. While the listing of appetizers offered many appealing seafood selections, we opted to enjoy the “crispy calamari” served with Creole mustard. The generous portion included a colorful lettuce garnish on a rectangular plate. Warm bread was promptly served soon after we finished our appetizer. As the bread melted in my mouth, a garden salad with red wine vinaigrette arrived. Even to the last bite, I thoroughly enjoyed tasting spinach, cucumber, tomato and cheese. I appreciated having our choices brought to our table without feeling the slightest need to hurry. Each of our entrees was large in portion and wonderfully delicious. Having the freedom to select sides made the meal more desirable and tasteful. The chatter was not disturbing or even noticeable.

My attention went toward the ease of conversation with my husband.

The dining area offered customers the option of either a booth or a table; yet, opportunities were available for all seasons and preferable seating choices. I could envision the bar being enjoyed by spirited sports enthusiasts in the late afternoon.

The lunch menu has many choices to appease any sports fan, as well as the

Walking toward the door, I noted families with young children, dating couples, groups of friends and married couples, like us, enjoying a datenight together. Bleu Restaurant and Bar was a wonderful choice. It is an intimate experience that suits all occasions.

Doctors at Summit Eye Care Use Latest Technology to Improve Lives

uring rotations as a medical student, I witnessed a cataract surgery that changed the life of a veteran for the better,” said Dr. Vic Khemsara, ophthalmologist at Summit Eye Care, PA. “At that point, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in this field and help change people’s lives in the same way.” Today, Dr. Khemsara and his staff at Summit Eye Care impact lives every day, upholding the highest level of patient care by treating patients in the manner they would like themselves and their family members to be treated.

Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Khemsara completed his medical training in his home state and did his glaucoma fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta. He has been in private practice since 2002, moving to WinstonSalem in 2008 with his wife and children to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere of the city. Dr. Khemsara’s practice on Hawthorne Road has been in existence for over six years with a simple goal: providing the best patient care with the latest technology.

Working closely alongside Dr. Khemsara is Dr. Truc Ly Tran, an optometrist who grew up and studied in Chicago.

After attending optometry school in Memphis, she completed an ocular disease residency at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. Dr. Tran joined the practice one year ago in order to expand the services the office provides. Her inspiration comes from seeing adults and children gain a new awareness of the world for the first time through new glasses or contact lenses. “My job is so gratifying,” she said. “Sight plays a huge role in our lives and, to me, helping someone obtain such a gift is priceless.” Dr. Tran sees most of the adolescent patients and does most of the contact lens exams and fittings. Working with children is especially fun for her because contact lenses can play a significant role in a child’s life. “It really increases their confidence,” Dr. Tran said.

In speaking with Drs. Khemsara and Tran, it is clear that their desire to help people forms the foundation of their work at Summit Eye Care. A

ugust 26 is Dog Day, a day to celebrate all the reasons dogs are man’s best friend. No matter how your canine came into your life – by luck, friend, breeder or pound, you’ve no doubt come to realize the joys of dog ownership. My husband and his ninety pound Chesapeake Bay retriever were a package deal.

Drake moved in with the same resolute encroachment as the ugly gray couch that came with the merging of our households.

And, a thousand decimated pieces of card board, 300 toe stubs on mislaid bones, five emergency trips to the vet (once for breaking a tooth while chewing rocks) and three baby gates reduced to kindling later, I’m finally understanding what a big commitment I made. As the previous owner of such stately breeds as a teacup Maltese and a Yorkshire terrier, I didn’t know the bigger the dog, the more room he takes up in your heart. These are the things that I love about you, Drake:

• How you sit and stare at me as if I’m the broken half of a telepathic connection, but somehow I know what you want anyway.

• How you pee on the deck if it’s snowing because three extra steps in the cold just isn't worth it.

•

The innocent look you’ve perfected despite the fact that we know where that choking, noxious gas came from.

•

The way you wait to eat your dinner, hedging your bets that something better might be leftover from ours.

•

• The way you take up two thirds of the couch and don’t think we’ll notice.

• How you can’t quite navigates U-turns in small spaces like the laundry room, hall way, or closet, so you retreat with the awkward dexterity of an 18 wheeler. You’re only missing the wide-load sign and beep-beep-beep.

• Your unwavering enthusiasm for me, even though I just went to get milk, and it’s only been ten minutes since you saw me last.

• The way you love the bone we got you six years ago.

That’s the best ten bucks we ever spent.

The way you howl when the sirens go by, as if that’s your pack and you got left behind.

• The way you know tears are the human command to come and give kisses until the crying stops.

• The way you slide Tom Cruise style across the linoleum when you’re excited about something.

•

• The way you think you can creep into the bed with us and if your head’s down we won’t notice the extra 90 pounds taking up space nor the feet digging into my spine.

Although there are a few things I have less of (like quality alone time in the bathroom or sleep that’s not interrupted by snoring), you’ve added so much to my life! There are so many reasons to love you, every day should be dog day!

• The way I tell people you’re such a good dog right before you attack the stick they just picked up.

The way you love me unconditionally and irrepressibly no matter the circumstance of my day or life.

Karen Barry Presents “Hold Me Tight ” ®

started growing in popularity and, as an EFT therapist, I decided I wanted to know what the buzz was about. So, I attended two workshops as an assistant. The progress I witnessed couples making was nothing short of remarkable. In a review we received, a husband wrote that the workshop saved his marriage.”

This experience led Karen to host her own workshop to help couples locally.

“In late 2014, I started preparing myself to deliver the program, and in April and June, I offered my first two in Charlotte at Pfeiffer University,” said Barry. “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to come back to Winston-Salem to offer the workshop. When I found the Old Salem Visitor Center, I was really excited to have a special place to host the program. The maximum number of couples I can accommodate is 15.”

n the past 50 years, the number of marriages ending in divorce has increased dramatically.

There are many factors that have led to this change, including transitioning spousal roles professionally leading to tension, a changing society that is more accepting of divorce, and lack of time to dedicate to the marriage itself due to the ever-busier daily lives of technologically driven generations. For many couples having trouble, whether married or not, therapy can help in an impactful and fulfilling way.

This August, Karen Barry hopes to help couples take the first step towards a lasting, happy relationship with the “Hold Me Tight®” Couples Workshop.

“I’ve been a marriage and family therapist since 1994,” said Barry. “I specialize in couples therapy which is considered the most difficult type of therapy. I chose to specialize in couples work because a healthy couple’s relationship has a profound effect (mental, emotional and physical) on the well being of all family members.

I’ve been studying Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) since 2003. It is shown to be the most effective model of all couples therapy – 45%-60% more effective than the others. This workshop is a popularized version of EFT. It’s not therapy, but it often has therapeutic results. The workshop is based on the layperson book, Hold Me Tight – Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love by Dr. Sue Johnson, the developer of EFT. Hold Me Tight® Workshops started being delivered in the U.S. and Canada in 2008. They

“The workshop is partly lecture and video but mostly exercises the couples do privately,” said Barry. “The most valuable aspect of the workshop is exercises the couples do together to practice what was presented in the didactic portion of the class. They are structured and allow one another to understand themselves better and understand their partner, and then they have a ‘conversation’ to share with each other. Through doing these, they ‘feel’ the effect of EFT which is highly experiential in nature and helps people get to the core of their problems. No one is expected to share their personal stories to the group, though some will share their experiences of the exercise. Topics that are covered relate to the topics covered in the book -- called conversations. There are conversations about the nature of love, attachment theory, where love goes wrong, repetitive patterns of interactions, forgiveness and repair, and bonding through affection, touch and sex. I will have highly trained EFT therapists assisting during the exercise portion of the workshop to assure everyone is helped as needed.”

Many of us put shopping for jeans in the same painful category as shopping for bathing suits. If you follow these tips, you can increase your chances of success while making the process more enjoyable.

1. Do not begin by shopping on-line. There are too many washes, cuts and size variations, and you will not be able to narrow down and order the best styles to try. You will actually spend more time this way and end up frustrated.

2. Take the time to go to a store where you can have an experienced salesperson help you or, better yet, have a personal stylist go with you. You need someone who understands how each pair of jeans fits and which will be the best bet for you.

The advantage of a personal stylist is that they know your wardrobe, taste and style so they can guide you in the right direction.

3. If you wear jeans on a regular basis you will want to make sure you have a dark wash that can be worn dressier, as well as a medium wash. Of course, there are other washes you can add along the way, but a dark wash is a good place to start.

are some examples). My suggestion is to start with either a straight cut jean or a slim boot cut. These are both classic styles that will look good for a long time.

5. In addition, you will need to figure out the best rise (length of seam from crotch to waist band) for your figure. Thankfully, rises have gotten higher, which tends to work better on most people. However, if you happen to be short-waisted, you are usually better off in a lower rise, otherwise the waist comes up way too high on you and your top half will look too short compared to your bottom half.

6. Bring a pair of shoes with you that have a heel height that you will most likely wear with your jeans. If you want to be able to wear flats and heels with your jeans, you will need to have a seamstress pin it with both shoes. Basically you will want to have the jeans hemmed so they don’t look too short with your heels or too long with your flats. You will have to compromise a little on this. If you find a pair of jeans you love and are able to do it, I suggest buying two pairs and hemming to each shoe so you can designate one pair as your “heel jeans” and the other as your “flat jeans.”

7. When looking at jeans, I think it is best to go with a fabric mix that’s a blend of cotton and stretch. Nowadays, there are so many different blends available. You may not always be able to find just cotton and stretch, but try and make sure the cotton has the highest percentage. When rayon or polyester become a big percentage of the fabric content, that’s when your jeans will stretch on you too much. Jeans always stretch some, but you don’t want them to grow a whole size or two too big!

8. When deciding how much to spend on your jeans, think about how often you wear them. If you wear jeans numerous times a week, invest more in them. When you calculate your cost per wear, you will see it is worth the extra money spent on a nice pair of jeans.

Let’s Spread the Word!

f you ask parents what they want most for their children, they will invariably answer “health and happiness,” so it is devastating to learn that your child has a life-threatening illness. Your family’s life gets turned upside down as the focus has to be centered on doing everything possible for your sick child.

It is clear how this affects the parents, but often we forget the impact it has on the child’s siblings.

Having mother’s intuition, Michelle Welborn knew something wasn’t right with her five-month old daughter, Lilly.

After multiple doctor appointments with several specialists, Lilly was finally diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a rare and intractable form of epilepsy that begins in infancy. For years, their pediatrician offered to recommend Lilly to the Make-A-Wish® Central and Western NC Chapter, but the Welborns always felt that somebody else deserved the wish. “It wasn’t until the doctor said, ‘It’s not about you, it’s about her. They can do things for her that you can’t do.’ We really understood that when Lilly’s wish was granted and we got there,” said Michelle. “Lilly's wish was to meet Barney at Universal in Orlando.”

“It was really the first normal family vacation we had had,” said Lilly’s sister, Logan.

That trip made a huge impression on, then 12-year-old, Logan and supporting Make-A-Wish® became a passion of hers. “I saw how awesome Lilly’s wish turned out to be and how much effort Make-A-Wish® took into making sure that everything went well,” said Logan.

Two years ago, Logan organized Team Lilly for Walk for Wishes. This is an annual event that takes place at Tanglewood during the Festival of Lights. On this night, Tanglewood is closed to the public, and participants are able to walk on a route through the park. Last year, Team Lilly raised $1,600 for Make-A-Wish®. Not only will Logan keep and hope to grow Team Lilly, but she has gotten her school involved with Make-A-Wish® as well.

Elected to the Junior National Honor Society at Forsyth Country Day School, Logan knew that, besides high marks in academics, members were required to provide service hours. “I knew MakeA-Wish® was a great organization seeing it first hand with Lilly’s wish,” said Logan. “I thought it was a really great way to give back. Entering high school, I was able to enlist the help of members of girls’ service clubs, so our numbers grew a little. This year, we plan to increase our numbers even more by going outside the clubs and, hopefully, going into the community and getting other area high schools involved.”

It is no wonder then that, last year, Logan was honored by becoming the first junior member of the W.I.S.H. (Women Inspiring Strength and Hope) Society. “I was approached about W.I.S.H. Society and felt, because Logan had done so much more for Make-A-Wish®, that if they had junior members, I would like her to get this opportunity,” said Michelle. Last year was the inaugural year of the W.I.S.H. Society in our area.

“The W.I.S.H. Society is an honor society for women who are highly invested in the community philanthropically,” said Director of Development, Christy Collum. “They are usually very successful in business as well. For the senior W.I.S.H. Society members, it is a networking opportunity to meet other like-minded women and work together for philanthropy in the community, grant wishes and help spread awareness about Make-A-Wish®. The average cost of a wish is $6,000, so each honoree commits to raising that amount. This year, we will grant 260 wishes. We know there are an additional 200 children who would qualify, but they do not know about Make-A-Wish® and have not been referred to us. This year, Make-A-Wish® began allowing anyone, not just the child’s doctor, to make a referral – including the child. Make-A-Wish® grants wishes to children ages two-and-a-half to 18 years of age with, as its mission states, “life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

Spreading the word and getting involved are crucial to this wonderful organization. Many assume the Make-A-Wish® Foundation gets money from a national headquarters, but all the money raised through donations and fundraisers stays here in our community.

“Our area covers 51 counties in central and western North Carolina,” said Collum. “Although this area's Make-A-Wish® was founded in 1985, we still need help in getting the word out about this wonderful organization.”

Celebrating 10 Years Recent Kitchen Update Before

H

ow old were you when you knew what you wanted to be when you grew up? I didn’t know until I was 55. So just why did it take 55 years?

I was born to good parents who raised me on a dairy farm where hard work was expected. After high school, I was off to college to become an elementary school teacher. I married a wonderful man and had the privilege of being April and Leah’s mother. With my husband’s career we moved and made our home in many places.

I was a small business owner and volunteered in the community. I served as an Area Representative with Christian Women’s Club and traveled throughout the southeast as a featured speaker. For 14 years I served on a church music staff as pianist and preschool choir leader. In between all of this ‘life,’ I enjoyed completing several quilts and antique reproduction cross-stitch samplers.

Through the years I begin to realize that God had given me a special gift. Walking into a room, my mind would immediately start to spin: how can changing the placement of furniture and colors create a more beautiful room? For many years I used this gift to help friends create a beautiful home. Just before we moved back to North Carolina in 2004, I helped a friend for several days do a redesign and shop for her home… that was before I knew what the word “redesign” actually meant. The difference it made in her home and in her attitude towards her home made me think, “This could be a business!”

Within a year we moved back to NC and I became certified as an Interior Redesigner, Real Estate Home Stager, and Interior Decorator. ReDesigns by Ava began in August 2005. Shortly thereafter, my

business was a featured article in the Winston-Salem Monthly Magazine (July 2006).

May 2007 gave rise to a special advertising relationship with Forsyth Woman magazine.

This has led to unique opportunities to teach decorating classes for Salem College’s “Courses for Community,” and to teach Decorating 101 at Meg Brown Home Furnishings.

It’s been an amazing 10 years and I have had the privilege of getting to know some wonderful people. Thank-you notes from clients reaffirm that I am now what I wanted to be when I grew up.

“Saturday was a wonderful day. I couldn’t believe the time went by so fast… you worked so hard! That day seemed so short and the time you spent with me is priceless.

We have had an open house and 19 guests have come to see our redesign. My enthusiasm has been out the roof! Our friends have been excited for us, too. We have always enjoyed sharing our home with others and always want it to be a warm, welcome and happy place to be. It just feels different and you have inspired me to ‘de-clutter’ even more.

Ava, you have so much charm and grace about you and you’re beautiful inside and out.

Thank you for sharing your talents with us. I told several of my friends that you had been doing this for years, but you just received your Redesign Certification and become official.

Ava, I will continue to pray for you as you begin this exciting work that you are so talented with and that you love. Please… continue to create beautiful homes, one room at a time!”

21 Discoveries Found During the Grieving Process

ach of us believes we have suffered some form of loss or grief in our lives until the unimaginable occurs in an instant.

The body and mind automatically adapts through more or fewer hours of sleep, a change of appetite and weight. While shock is expected, what may be termed as the “new normal” arrives without warning. Life is viewed with a clearer understanding.

All of those complications, complaints, stresses and worries become so trivial. While each of us hopes to never experience the unimaginable, it happens frequently in our social circles. There is no way to understand how to help a loved one or friend; however, perhaps, the following list can provide some form of clarity to you.

9. No, it doesn’t get easier with time. In fact, the pain and sorrow become intensified.

1. Everyone wants to provide some form of advice to those who are grieving.

14. The community, a church congregation, family, and great friends will move mountains to provide any form of help.

While it is hard to say “yes,” southern hospitality will arrive with full force. The best form of action is to concede.

2. Not everyone can help during times of grief and loss. Guilt cannot be felt by those who are unable to meet emotional needs; instead, it is best to distance yourself and choose those who can lift the spirit, listen, understand, and be supportive.

10. Crying is productive, and talking through feelings is very therapeutic.

11. Sometimes, it is hard to convey how we feel or think or what we even need.

12. Touch and embraces are important.

13. Household pets have the grace to know exactly how to show love and support. Words are not needed; instead, all that matters is being near.

15. When you think you are not strong enough, strength will come.

3. There will be many who don’t know what to say, and will end up saying the wrong thing. It is okay to say, “Please don’t say you are sorry. I’d rather you say I am here for you.” Family and friends want to know how to help, and especially what to say.

16. While you will (practically) demand to have a face-to-face conversation with Jesus to discover clarity of the situation, it is important to continue to pray and maintain faith.

4. To compensate for not knowing what to say, books will arrive in your mailbox. You may think, “Each of us handles loss in our own way, how could a book possibly understand my situation?” You may find comfort in its pages or let it sit on a shelf for a year or two before you are ready. Despite the stages of grief, no experience of loss is truly textbook.

18. Surprisingly, a young child will say exactly what you need, and express perfectly how you feel without prompting.

5. Since we process grief individually with a myriad of feelings, it will take open communication to understand one another.

6. Being a family, standing together to talk and support one another has healing powers. The extended support through family members and friends is equally important.

7. Fear may arrive when looking at future dates on the calendar.

Living day by day and in the present moment is a good rule.

8. Being alone often doesn’t help.

19. Just as worry and regret are never ending, grief has no timetable.

20. Calling counselors can take days and cause feelings of tremendous stress. For children under five years old, there are few child psychologists or play therapists available. Finding the “right” counselor can be equally exhausting and time consuming. Please know, Hospice has centers in close proximity to where you live, and can provide excellent counseling, free services for the entire family, especially preschool aged children.

21. There is comfort in knowing someone else has stood in your shoes and felt your pain. Loss may feel individualized, but our personal struggles are unfortunately common.

food and art activities for children. We decided that yes, we could make a day of it.”

Those humble beginnings have resulted in a much-anticipated biennial event with 2013’s event culminating in the biggest ARTSfest in history.

“We had more than 60 artists participate, an amazing selection of performers plus food and fun for everyone,” said Stanley.

“It’s hard to believe that this notion of bringing the arts to Grace Court has morphed into a festival that draws as many as 6,000 people.”

Twelve years ago, two women living in the beautiful and historic West End did something that perhaps they were not ready for; but with determination and resolve, they ended up creating one of the Southeast’s most popular arts festivals. It all started with just an idea… n 2003, Kathy Stanley and Kathleen Ramich were members of their local neighborhood association but had never met. Kathy was remembering when there used to be a small festival in Grace Court back in the late 1980s, so she inquired of the president of the association if anyone had ever thought of starting another one? She was soon introduced to Kathleen, and the idea started to become a reality.

Kathy and Kathleen met and began to dream a dream of an art festival that would bring talented artists to Grace Court for a day of merriment and to showcase all of the talent artists and craftsmen in the area and beyond. Neither had ever started an art festival before, but they pushed through and had a breakthrough.

“We were pretty much reinventing the wheel so to speak,” said Stanley. “We talked with local art scene movers and shakers to get a grasp of what it might entail, and soon we decided to add music,

The committee each year isn’t made up of legions of people. Still operating on the less-is-more philosophy, ARTSfest’s steering committee is usually a small group of no more than six women.

How does such a small group pull off such a big festival?

“I think it really demonstrates that if people, especially a group of like-minded women, are ardent and focused, there really are no limits,” said Kim Thore, marketing chair for 2013 and, also, this year’s event. “It’s about a shared love of the arts and a desire to bring something special to our city. To think that a festival of this size, with all of its working parts comes together after just a few short months is actually inspiring.

I am really proud to be a part of it.”

This year’s ARTSfest is scheduled for September 27th from 11am-5pm and promises to be yet another hallmark of distinction.

Cover Artist Diana Caldwell brings an eclectic collection of original digital, photo/illustration, fine art prints and paper goods inspired by the rural North Carolina farm where she lives and works. Entertainment will be provided by JJBlue, Nobody's Business, Fade the Moon, The Jim Tedder Band, Dan Dockery and Gulley The Band. iet and health were already complicated before the buzz words “prebiotics” and “probiotics” were introduced into our vocabulary about a decade ago. More people are faced with colon complaints and seek not just answers, but viable dietary solutions.

While eating healthy foods sounds easy, researchers have determined that each of our gastrointestinal tracts has over 1,000 different types of bacteria. You may be wondering if this is important information. Absolutely!

It has everything to do with the amount of good bacteria in your body. Before we go any further, I will readily admit that understanding the biology of our body is challenging.

The definitions are not simple; however, beyond that, we can begin to see how our body can benefit from natural prebiotics and probiotics. And, that means always choosing healthy foods.

A Dining Experience Not To Be Missed

veryone has places they have gone that evoke wonderful sensory memories.

You can remember every time you were there and can’t wait to return. Ryan’s Restaurant is one of those places. The food, the setting and the service make every visit a special occasion.

Thirty-eight years ago, former owner Scott Richardson had a vision of building a finedining restaurant in an idyllic, peaceful setting tucked back in a wooded area that offered diners choices to please every taste, using the highest quality of ingredients, and only five minutes from downtown Winston-Salem. It was a recipe for success.

Through the years, the culinary world has seen many changes in tastes and trends.

Keeping a menu fresh over the years while still remaining true to the original concept can be difficult, but the chefs at Ryan's have mastered this beautifully. “Restaurant trends have changed dramatically over the last 38 years with everything from foams to infusion,” said Owner/General Manager, Dennis Carter. “There has been a huge expansion in just about every ethnic flavor you can think of and, of course, the most current ones being fresh everything and farm to table. We have and still do feature items with different ethnic approaches, primarily in Asian, Southwestern or Tex Mex as they lend themselves to the type of foods we start with as we are basically a steaks, chops and seafood restaurant. We will always be looking for new and trendy items to feature as daily specials or menu items. It could be as simple as using quinoa as a side (which we are doing) to adding a different or newer cut of beef. Our current Executive Chef, Jon Willis, is a young man with a tremendous amount of energy and knowledge about current trends.

He is constantly bringing in new items for us to try as daily features. Our Sous Chef, Sarah Bishop, has made excellent contributions as well.”

Another approach that has come front and center in restaurant jargon in recent years is farm to table. “We have always used a fresh first approach to almost everything we do,” said Carter. “If it is readily available and of the highest quality, we absolutely want it fresh. As for the farm to table movement, we use the same approach. As long as we can get it in sufficient quantities and the best possible quality, we are all for it. Currently, we have several local farms that we buy from.”

Service is an important part of making the dining experience an overall success, and Ryan’s scores high marks in that area as well. “I think our consistency through the years is due in large part to our staff and our philosophy on restaurant management,” said Carter. “We have been very fortunate to find really good staff both in front and back of the house, and we have managed to keep those folks here for very long periods of time.

I originally opened Ryan’s in 1977 as the general manager, left for about two and a half years, came back in 1981 and have been here ever since. Along with the management style of my partner Jeff, managers Kelly and Brian, and myself, we are actively involved in the day to day operation and being on the floor talking to our guests, making sure that we are starting with the absolute best products we can find and being reasonable with the prices we charge.”

While many may perceive Ryan’s as a place to go only for a special occasion, this is a misconception that needs to be rectified. “Some folks think that Ryan’s is an expensive place to eat, but if you look at our menu with the small portion entrées, dinner salads and appetizers, it is very affordable for anyone,” said Carter.

Long time patrons will notice recent updates to the décor, but the serene, romantic and private setting will never change. “BACK TO LIFE” AFTER LOW BACK PAIN

By Sara Migliarese efore this past weekend, I had never given low back pain much thought. I knew plenty of friends and family who had occasional short-term muscle soreness in their back or even symptoms from a bulging disc, but I had never suffered back pain that interfered with my normal daily routine. That changed after deciding to run on a Friday, spin on Saturday and work in the yard for several hours on Sunday. Three consecutive days of “overdoing it” landed me on a heating pad, popping ibuprofen every four hours. I had joined the 61% of Americans who say that they have experienced low back pain and, of those, 69 percent reported that it had affected their daily lives. That was me.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) published these findings in 2012 and currently provides evidenced-based information at www.apta.org on proven treatments such as physical therapy for the elivation of low back pain. The APTA also reports that “physical therapy is a costeffective first choice in an era when all too often back pain is over-treated with narcotics or unhelpful imaging scans that lead to higher costs.”

Activities that are commonly affected by low back pain include exercise, sleep, work, intimacy, travel, “other” and family time, in order of prevalence.

For me, spending way too many hours gardening resulted in lack of sleep, back pain that prevented my daily exercise routine and increased time needed for daily activities like showering, walking, standing and dressing. My main symptom was pain with movement during sit to stand and after prolonged sitting. The typical symptoms of low back pain vary a great deal, but can be described as pain that is dull, burning or sharp. Pain might be felt at a single point or throughout a broad area in the back. It might be accompanied by muscle spasms or stiffness. Sometimes, it might spread into one or both legs.

According to the APTA, there are three different types of low back pain: • Acute – pain lasting fewer than three months • Recurrent – acute symptoms come back • Chronic – pain lasting longer than three months The APTA goes on to report that “most people who have an episode of acute pain will have at least one recurrence. While the actual cause of low back pain isn't often known, symptoms usually resolve on their own. Psychosocial factors, such as self-confidence and a perceived ability to cope with disability, have been shown to be predictors of who might not recover from low back pain as expected. We used to believe the cause of low back pain was related directly to the tissues of our body but are now understanding the condition to be more complex.”

While most low back pain resolves after a few days on its own, there are several conditions that may be related to your low back pain that can be more serious, such as: • • • • • • •

Degenerative disk disease Lumbar spinal stenosis Fractures Herniated disk Osteoarthritis Osteoporosis Tumors of the spine

If your low back pain is accompanied by loss of bowel or bladder control or numbness in the groin or inner thigh, you should visit your local emergency department immediately as the spinal cord may be involved.

I could almost bet that my low back pain was a result of overuse of back and leg muscles over three days that culminated with a long gardening session on the last day.

I should have reviewed the following tips from the APTA • Warm up before you garden. A 10-minute brisk walk and stretches for the spine and limbs are good ways to warm up.

• Change positions frequently to avoid stiffness or cramping.

• Be aware of how your body feels as you work in your garden. If a part of your body starts to ache, take a break, stretch that body part in the opposite direction it was in or switch to a different gardening activity.

For example, if you’ve been leaning forward for more than a few minutes, and your back starts to ache, slowly stand up and gently lean backwards a few times.

• Make use of a garden cart or wheelbarrow to move heavy planting materials or tools. Be sure to keep your back straight while using a wheelbarrow.

• If kneeling on both knees causes discomfort in your back, try kneeling on one and keep the other foot on the ground. Use knee pads or a gardening pad when kneeling.

• If kneeling or leaning down to the ground causes significant pain in your back or knees, consider using elevated planters to do your gardening.

• Use good body mechanics when you pick something up or pull on something, such as a weed. Bend your knees, tighten your abdominals and keep your back straight as you lift or pull things. Avoid twisting your spine or knees when moving things to the side; instead, move your feet or pivot on your toes to turn your full body as one unit.

• Avoid bending your wrist upwards when pulling things or using gardening tools. Instead, keep your wrist straight and use your shoulder muscles to pull and lift.

• End your gardening session with some gentle backward bending of your low back, a short walk and light stretching, similar to stretches done before starting.

But, if I fail to return to my normal activities after a few more days then I am headed to see a physical therapist! Happy gardening, but protect your back in the process.

arsha Wise could not have a more appropriate last name. She is the epitome of wise, and she is a strong example of what a woman can do when she sets her mind to something. When she was laid off due to downsizing of a corporate company in 1989, she had a big decision to make – find another corporate job and always worry about another round of employee cuts, or take a leap of faith in starting her own business.

“I was devastated because I had never been unemployed before,” said Wise. “My children were very small, so instead of working long hours and always worrying about the pink slip again, I thought that I would try doing something on my own. I wanted flexible hours, so I could be home after school with my boys every day, so I decided that cleaning was the way to go! I knew I was a great housekeeper but wasn't sure if anyone else would think so. I got in touch with a few good friends and cleaned their houses to see if I really wanted to do this on an everyday basis, plus...was I good enough to make a career out of house cleaning? House Matters Cleaning Service was born!

Needless to say, 26 years later, House Matters still exists, and my husband, Roger, runs and operates House Matters Lawn Care.”

We do competition BBQ, and we give a percentage of our winnings to an organization called "Cancer Sucks" which is a team that competes in the memory of Corliss Johnson, who unfortunately lost her fight several years ago. We feel very strongly in giving to cancer research of any kind because of the huge progress that they have made in improving the lives of so many women with this terrible disease. I stand as an advocate because I have gone through the exact same situation. I feel that I am so fortunate in so many ways and will continue to give what I can to this cause.”

High School Archetypes are Alive and Well in the Workplace

H

igh school is the longest running show (on or) off Broadway, and high school archetypes are an institution. Oh, the names and faces may change, to protect the innocent, but the play remains the same. But have you ever noticed some of these folks forgot to leave it with their mortar board at graduation? See if you can spot these characters at your office: The Brain (smart kid, intellectual, hipster) Usually the class valedictorian and in the workplace you’ll want them at the helm (or very near it). These guys do their homework. Because of their mastery of information and presentation, they are often committee chairs and department heads.

The Jocks (Sports, Bros) Not always the sharpest tools in the shed, they excel in delegating, motivating and goal orientation. If they don’t know it, they will find someone who does. They are enthusiastic sales team leaders, or car salesman, rife with sports analogies and motivational metaphors.

The Popular Crowd, The Royals Sometimes jocks or rich kids, always the most attractive people we had ever seen. Intelligence was optional, just so long as they looked gooooood. Post high school this may have opened doors, but it’s not sustainable without hard work or a willing accomplice. Be careful not to get sucked up into their vortex or you will be doing the work while they get the glory.

The Plastics (Un-original, Wanna-be, Try-too-Hard) This ‘flock’ hovers in the shadow of the Royals. Exact replicas, they’re popular by association. They are blind followers and are expendable. At work they’re leadership’s ‘yes men.’ Just make sure your mission is aligned and remember that the corner office they are gunning for does not come with stadium seating.

The Stoner Excelled at doing the bare minimum. Oh, they had priorities, like parties. Ironically they are often closet whiz kids – with greater ambition they could have ruled the world. Some grew into ambition though, you may no longer recognize them as they climb the Fortune 500 charts. Still, those who did not are easily spotted – they expend the least amount of effort and are out the door as soon as their shift ends.

The Alternatives In school they were the Goths, Emos, Hippies and Poets. They were interesting, philosophical, socially, and environmentally sensitive. Today their professional attire makes it harder to spot them. You’ll find they thrive in the fields of education, community service, and human resources.

The Criminal He or she kept a low profile and a standing reservation in ISS (in school suspension). You needed it, they could get it. At the office we say they are “connected.” They know how to circumvent the system. This go-to guy is a good friend to have. He is most creative when he is acquiring necessary office supplies through unconventional means.

The Anti-Conformists Never without a petition or megaphone.

Not that gal at your office organizing the walk for (pick your charity) – she’s lovely. This one is different, militant, feels duty bound to be the dissenting vote in any committee. To their inner devil’s advocate, Argument is King! Best just to pass them at the water cooler or avoid them altogether.

The Prep or Goody Two Shoes (Narc, Snitch) Impeccably groomed, and well-mannered he or she is every parent’s dream prom date. One wonders, though, what happens if something goes awry in the workplace? Will their perfectly inflexible facade implode? I say we keep one eye on this ticking time bomb and the other on the nearest exit.

The Class Clown (plucky sidekick) This person is probably your best friend, fiercely loyal and unfailingly gifted at lightening up any situation. They may or may not have mastered the material, but they are always entertaining. Keep these guys close because you’ll need them at work and in life. As coworkers, they keep us from taking ourselves too seriously.

Then there’s the rest of us, the average kids, sometimes intentionally invisible, with a small circle of close friends.

Like most people, we outgrew archetypes after high school as a part of finding out who we are.

Some folks are stuck in these roles. Identifying them makes it a little easier to navigate through their Breakfast Club.

Traveling Solo

ummer is here and the itch to travel is in the warm July air. Your friends have trips planned with their spouses or children or boyfriend to exciting places far away, or even not-so-exciting locations nearby, but that are at least out of town. What if you find yourself “solo” in the desire to travel, but dislike the idea of vacationing alone? This could be a familiar circumstance for women between boyfriends, who are divorced or widowed, or who have unusual tastes in travel destinations making it difficult to find a companion, even if they are in a relationship. Maybe you like to explore the shopping and museums in a large city while your boyfriend would rather fly fish in Montana? Whatever the reasons may be for finding yourself without a traveling companion, there is a growing list of solutions.

An easy, safe option could be joining an adventure group like Backroads, America Outdoor or Butterfield and Robinson, where every detail of your trip is planned for you.

Solo travelers can choose from having a room to themselves or can pick a roommate. These groups are well-known and offer several options of activities, cost, and destinations (both domestic and foreign). If you request a roommate to save money or to have someone to share the day’s experiences with, then the person paired with you is typically “potluck.”

A second option could be finding a traveling companion, male or female, who has similar interests, excluding the interest in a romantic relationship. This person is typically an acquaintance or “friend of a friend.” With this option, a pre-trip discussion is helpful regarding potential traveling issues that could pop up on a trip with a casual acquaintance. Sleeping arrangements should be tackled first, along with whether you both want a private bathroom, separate beds, or separate rooms. Cost may be a factor in these choices and force the need to keep expenses at a minimum. This might mean sharing a room with or without separate beds. Sometimes sharing a room results in sharing other things, too, like snoring, bedtime routines, and the bathroom. And be aware that even if you discuss these potential hurdles ahead of time, your traveling companion may not be aware that she talks in her sleep. A set of earplugs may be a good addition to your packing list.

For the social media savvy singles, Internet dating sites offer another avenue for finding traveling companions. Be aware, however, that this option poses many more risks if you decide to travel with someone whom you only know from what the dating site shares, phone conversations, or emails.

Traveling with someone you have never met may work out just fine, but it may also be a disaster. Reaching out on Craig’s List may not be the safest option, but even ChristianMingle can be a risk!

A newer option at some universities are alumni travel groups. Universities are starting to discover that alumni who lack a traveling companion are researching trips for “solo travelers” through their alma mater. Most universities already offer organized group travel programs to destinations covering the globe. In order to better serve alumni who are requesting a matching service for travel companions, some schools are considering a “solo traveler” program. These programs pair individual travelers through compatibility surveys. The travel programs are typically not restricted to alumni of that university and are open to anyone with the funds to travel. Usually these trips include less outdoor adventure and more cultural activities, such as museum visits, information on the historical background of the area, and exploration of the local customs.

The cost of these trips may be more than a typical itinerary planned through a travel agent, as the university may spend additional resources on the planning and implementation of the journey.

While the idea of traveling solo may not make you blush, some of the issues that can arise when traveling with a “stranger” could bring the blood to your cheeks. More of these issues seem to crop up when traveling with the opposite sex. Should you be concerned about the toilet seat being left up in a shared bathroom or let it go (no pun intended)?

What sleeping attire is appropriate if you share a room to cut costs?

Does it matter what you wear if you are not interested in a relationship?

Maybe it does if you sleep in the nude; maybe it doesn’t if you sleep in flannel pajamas. How comfortable are you sharing a bed if separate beds are not an option, and what if he wants to snuggle up to you in his sleep? And of course there is always “hair in the sink,” “no makeup in the morning,” and “roll him over if he snores”!? None of these issues are life threatening and should not prevent you from trying to travel as a solo and see the world. It’s much more interesting than staying at home and sleeping with the cat. You might be surprised to learn how many people enjoy vacations as solo travelers.

his August 6-8th, Paige Carter will compete in the National Mrs. Pageant representing North Carolina. Many people think the women who participate in pageants as adults were focused on nothing else as children.

For Carter, though, the competition of pageants as a child was familiar, but it never consumed all of her time. Entering pageants as an adult was about much more – reaching young people about very important issues that are close to her heart.

“I had been in pageants as a child but don’t remember much about them,” said Carter. “One day, I decided to try for married pageants. I was in the Mrs. North Carolina America pageant in 2014 where I had no idea what to expect because that was my first pageant. Then, I went on in January to try to win National Mrs. North Carolina where I took home the crown. I started pageants because I wanted to be able to reach people about my platform and talk to as many young adults about the dangers of substance abuse, texting and driving, not wearing seatbelts and much more. My close friend died in an automobile accident at the age of 15 in 2006 due to substance abuse and not wearing a seat belt. This impacted our family and entire community. As a mother, this is something I want to teach my kids, as well as educate other parents and young adults. I’m 27, married to Brandon Carter and, together, we have a two-year-old daughter named Kaylee.”

Though the pageant world can be hectic and overwhelming, Paige was determined to focus on her goal of reaching young people through her platform, which inspired her to keep going. “It was very busy as I was planning outfits, hairstyles, fitness training and many fundraising events in which I raised money for the Chortney Allisa Wilmoth Memorial Scholarship fund that I founded in memory of my dear friend,” said Carter. “My platform is Crown VIP: Very Important Person. Chortney Wilmoth was that very important person in my life, my family’s lives, as well as many in our community. She was loved by many and always the one to make you laugh.

We went to church and school together, went on many vacations together and always spent time together finding interesting stuff to laugh about. The morning we found out about her tragic accident, we were just in shock and didn’t know how or why this could happen to such an amazing, beautiful, talented young lady. Teaching others about these dangers and keeping her memory alive is what helps give me peace still to this day. If I can help save just one life through her story it would be worth it all.”

Winning National Mrs. North Carolina has allowed Paige to continue spreading her message. “I felt very blessed and honored to win this pageant to represent our state of North Carolina and to be able to keep my friend Chortney’s memory alive by spreading awareness of not wearing seatbelts, texting and driving, and drug and alcohol use,” said Carter. “I want to share the story of my friend in hopes that others will make smart and safe decisions.

I believe knowing what to expect this go ‘round and going to many events, as well as leading many events and fundraisers, is what led to my success because they saw the desire in me to know how bad I wanted this, and how winning this could get me in front of so many more people, which it has. The pageant coming up is National Mrs. Pageant. This is the pageant where all state winners of this pageant division come together and try to win the National Mrs. Crown. This pageant will be held August 6-8th in Williamsburg, Virginia. We will arrive and meet the other state contestants, give and receive gifts, as well as go to different amusement parks the first day there. The next day will be the interview process and preparing for registration. The following day will be the day of the pageant in which we get ready and have an opening dance number, fitness wear and evening gown competitions.

Then, we will all come together on stage to wait the announcing of the runner up and winner. The last day will be photo-shoots and appearances as the newly crowned National Mrs. Queen.”

Raise Your Left Hand – August 13 is Your Day to Celebrate

“Everyone is born right-handed.

Only the great overcome it.” (Author Unknown) This left-hander slogan is quite profound and supports the fact that they are outnumbered and forced to adapt to life in a right-handed world. Not many day-to-day tools/items are expressly designed for the lefties amongst us. Not even the computer mouse or a pair of scissors. Did you ever see a spiral notebook with the spiral on the right side?

No, me either.

It must be irritating to write with the spiral sticking in your arm the entire time.

At least the left-handers have a special day just for them to celebrate that they are left-handed!

It’s coming up soon – August 13 in fact. Left Handers International introduced International Left Handers Day on August 13, 1976. As lefthanders comprise about 10% of the population, the rest of us are encouraged – or challenged as the case may be – to try to be left handed for the day.

Good luck with that. My handwriting is bad enough as it is and would be indecipherable with my left hand I’m quite sure.

What causes a person to be left-handed versus right-handed? No one really knows. One theory is that a baby will put their dominant hand in their mouth more frequently.

At least left-handers have reason to celebrate these days.

In the 1600s, left-handers were assumed to be sinister and likely witches or warlocks. In fact, the Latin word for left is sinister.

In later years, if you preferred to write with your left hand, you might find it tied behind your back and forced to learn right-handed.

Scientific studies have since proven that the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left hand. That side of the brain centers on creativity – music, art, perceptions, and emotions. For the right-handers, the left hemisphere controls the right hand, which centers on logic, speech, math, sciences, and writing.

Evidently, in the US we like left-handed presidents. We’ve elected seven so far – Garfield, Hoover, Truman, Ford, Reagan, Bush (H.W.), Clinton and President Obama. Left-handers are well represented in the entertainment industry, too. Their ranks include Oprah Winfrey, Dick Van Dyke, Julia Roberts, Keanu Reeves, Jim Henson, Bruce Willis, Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie, Marilyn Monroe and Carol Burnett.

Famous left-handed artists include Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci (although his might have been due to some paralysis in his right hand). But left is left, right?

Shapers of generations include Benjamin Franklin, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Henry Ford, Helen Keller, Nelson Rockefeller, H. Ross Perot, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Joan of Arc and Julius Caesar (et tu Brute?).

Then there are the notorious left-handers: John Dillinger, the Boston Strangler and Jack-the-Ripper. Royal lefties include Queen Victoria, Prince Charles and Prince William.

Astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Wally Schirra were left-handed. I wonder if any of their spacecraft instruments were accommodated for their left-handedness. Authors H.G. Wells and Peter Benchley were also left-handed.

Music has quite a large number of left-handers. Both Everly Brothers (Don and Phil – Wake up Little Suzie), Glen Campbell, Judy Garland, Jimi Hendrix, Cole Porter, Seal, Paul Williams and Lady Gaga, just to name a few, are south-paws.

So, if you’re among the approximately 30,000,000 left-handers in the US, celebrate your day! Raise your left hand proudly!

(Finally!) Yoga is also widely touted for its highly effective therapeutic value in treating some of the everyday – and not so everyday – aches, pains and anxieties that can disrupt our lives.

For many women, menopause is a very disruptive and unsettling stage of life. Not only does it usher in heightened and more frequent states of anxiety, it also adds layers of stress and uncertainty to already-overloaded lives, along with concerns and questions about the physical changes taking place in our bodies.

If you search the Internet for information about managing the “symptoms” of menopause, you will find no shortage of resources, recommendations and “prescriptions” for navigating the transition from the reproductive to the post-reproductive years in a woman’s life; but calling the side effects of menopause “symptoms,” as we often do, is to classify it as something that needs to be cured, circumvented or “fixed” when, in fact, it is simply a natural progression in the female life cycle that needs our understanding. Even so, menopause can be fraught with uncomfortable side effects as the body shifts from one life stage to the next.

In Yoga for Menopause at Sunrise Yoga, students explore simple and accessible yoga postures requiring no previous experience, as well as basic breathing and meditation techniques that can help cool the body and soothe an agitated disposition. Students also learn some of the reasons behind the side effects of menopause – what’s happening to our bodies, and why – and receive tips for continuing their practice at home.

And just as important as the physical benefits of yoga, students may also discover a sense of camaraderie – friendship and fun with like-minded women who are coping with the same concerns.

The six-week series is offered on Tuesday evenings and is designed for the woman whose menopausal experience is either on the horizon, in progress, on the wane or completely “over.” There are no age restrictions or physical requirements – couch potatoes with creaky knees and stiff joints are welcome!

Class size is intentionally small to allow for the comfortable exploration of this very personal side of a woman’s life journey.

Yoga for menopause can help. Yoga’s tool kit is perfectly suited for the topics that are most concerning for the majority of women – how to manage hot flashes, how to maintain healthy bones and even tips for improving mental focus (“where did I leave my car keys?”) and relieving irritability.

Friendship Day

riends are special. No doubt about it. The first Sunday in August (August 2 for this year) is designated Friendship Day. Isn’t it nice that beginning in 1935, a day was set aside just to celebrate friends?

F

Childhood friends: The friends you played with, went to school with, and generally grew up with into who you are now. If you’re lucky enough to still have them in your life, you’re very fortunate indeed. Lifelong friends are worth the effort it takes to keep in touch.

The United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the World’s Ambassador of Friendship in 1997.

With all the turmoil in the world, it’s nice to have Pooh as a friend for everybody.

Seasonal friends: Friends who are in your life for a particular phase or period of time. Perhaps they’re there just to help you through a tough patch or vice versa.

Who are friends? A friend is: • The one you call first when you have fantastic news to share • The one you call first when you need a shoulder to cry on • The one you call just to talk about oh, nothing much • The one who shows up without being asked • The one who knows immediately by your tone if something’s going on because they know you so well • The one who checks on you just because • The one who know you’re hurt even if you say nothing’s wrong • The one who listens to your ranting and wailing and then sets you straight • The one you can count on • The one who listens Friends come at all stages of our lives.

Work friends: These are unique in their own way. You share a common bond of working together but may or may not socialize outside the office.

You’re still friends, just within the boundaries of the workday. If one leaves, it’s nice if you’re able to continue the friendship. I have a friend who used to work in the same office but she’s since retired. Now, we make a point to meet for lunch about once a month to catch up at our favorite restaurant.

Sometimes is takes several tries to finally coordinate our times, but it always works out.

Distant friends: With the mobility of life, some friends are just too far away to see often. But that doesn’t change the fact that you’re friends. It sure makes a get-together special and times seems to fly.

Whether you have a bunch of friends or a few close friends, they’re an important part of life. Through life’s highs and lows, giggles and tears – friends are there keeping us grounded, supported, and valued.

On August 2, remember your friends.

What makes them special is that they are your friends.

The Best Dog Food: What Are Your Options?

et’s face it, life is better with a dog; studies show they make us happier and healthier. But who needs a study to tell you that when you see that wagging tail and get those sloppy kisses? There really is nothing like the feeling of knowing you were missed for a whole 8 hours! Since our dogs add so much to our lives, who can blame us for wanting the best for theirs? When it comes to making nutritional choices for your BFLF (best four-legged friend), what is your best option: commercial or homemade dog food?

Commercial dog food is by far the most popular choice amongst dog owners; it’s convenient and reasonably priced.

But how nutritional is it? When you start reading labels, here are a few guidelines to follow.

•

The first ingredient on the label should always be meat with a name, like chicken, beef or lamb, as opposed to ‘meat,’ which can be anything.

•

A food should have more meat protein than grain protein. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell this from the label, but online investigation can shed some light on this.

•

Don’t be fooled by the words ‘natural’ or ‘premium,’ because these are mostly marketing terms to pull you into purchasing the product. If you want to know what the manufacturer means by a certain label on the food, it’s best to call the company and get some answers.

•

Checking with your veterinarian is a good place to go when the search for the best food becomes overwhelming.

Do You Ditch the Dog Chow for Cooking from Scratch?

Deciding on the type of dog food you provide is one of the most important decisions you will ever make for your puppy or adult dog. Balanced, nutritional food directly influences every aspect of your dog’s life, promoting healthy skin and coat, strong, well developed bones, bright, clear eyes, defined muscles, good quality of life and longevity, as well as healthy teeth and gums and firmer and fewer stools. Good nutrition, from head to tail, is a big part of keeping your dog healthy and in your life for as long as possible.

So do you buy a bag of dog food with the best looking label at the grocery store, a brand only found at your vet, or should you break out the pots and pans and make Fido’s favorite feast? The answer comes down to three factors: the quality of meat, less emphasis on vegetable protein, and the lack of chemical-based additives.

Homemade Dog Food By making your own ‘chow’ for your dog, you have complete control over the content of all the meals you serve.

You know exactly how much of each ingredient goes in, where it came from and that it was prepared in a clean environment: your kitchen! The homemade dog food plan comes with the responsibility of choosing nutritionally balanced meals (i.e., proteins, vitamins) and making sure you meet the caloric requirement to keep your dog healthy.

Cooked or raw diet recipes are available online at various sites. No matter which you choose, make sure that meat always makes up at least half of the diet. Some raw diets are high in fat, which can lead to obesity. A few pointers when going the made-from-scratch way are: • Start with a good recipe incorporating protein, fat and carbohydrates with calcium and essential fatty acids, all in the proper amounts. Always follow the recipe – don’t deviate because that could make the nutrients completely different.

• Choose high quality meats like chicken, beef and lamb.

Most owners who make their dog’s food prepare and serve meats that they themselves would consume.

• Make sure you are well informed on canine nutrition because your dog needs vegetables, but choosing the right ones is important. A dog doesn’t need too many vegetables in his diet, but they are important in a wellbalanced meal. Check with your veterinarian for specific veggies and the quantities.

• After 2-3 weeks of being on a homemade diet, check your dog’s weight to make sure there isn’t a fluctuation.

If his weight changes, you should visit your vet and discuss whether your choice of cooking for your dog could be the reason for the change.

In the end, the rule of thumb is to consult your dog’s medical professional, the veterinarian. Just as you check with your physician when looking into a new diet, contact your dog’s vet to make sure you are doing what is best for your pup.

Kelly still volunteers with the Forsyth Humane Society, but she wanted to help her community even more by training therapy dogs and creating a therapy dog program. Her therapy dog venture has grown from that first class two years ago into a network of 21 teams (a team is one dog paired with its human) who regularly visit schools, nursing homes, and community events.

By Kathryn Royal n the spring of 2013, Geralyn Kelly tried something new at her dog training center, Elite Canine. In addition to puppy classes and continuing obedience classes, she offered a therapy dog certification class in hopes of building a therapy dog program.

Kelly did not name her program before the class began but instead decided to leave the name to the creativity of the students in that first class.

The name they created shows the admiration they developed for her, as the class named the program Fostering Friendship Therapy Dog Team.

The inspiration for the word “fostering”? Kelly’s beloved Australian shepherd Foster.

Kelly tears up as she recalls her students choosing to name the program after Foster. The act of choosing to work her dog’s name into the name of the therapy program showed her how much she meant to her students, and it also means that once he is gone, Foster will still be touching lives.

Working as a dog trainer at a corporate store, Kelly was discouraged from volunteering with animal rescue groups. This restraint stifled her desire to help her community, so the day she made the drive home from her corporate job for the last time, she stopped at the Forsyth Humane Society and asked what she could do to volunteer.

Her teams visit five schools throughout the Triad as a part of the Reading Buddy Program.

With this program, the dogs sit or lie quietly while children read to them. Since dogs do not judge reading ability, having a canine audience helps some less secure readers read better.

The Fostering Friendship Therapy Dog Team has visited the Center for Exceptional Children’s Sibshops (workshops for siblings of special needs children) and has helped Kelly conduct dog safety training for children at locations such as the Children’s Museum and the YMCA. Nursing homes and The Shepherd’s Center are also regular destinations of the Fostering Friendship Therapy Dog Team. Recently, they set out to conquer a new sphere: hospitals. In May, Wake Forest Baptist Health received a visit from several of the Fostering Friendship teams, who talked to the medical residents about the positive effects of therapy dogs on both patients and staff in healthcare settings.

Kelly says she is humbled by the hard work and dedication of her 21 teams; she has never had fewer than five teams show up for a visit or an event, regardless of the time of day or the setting.

From its humble beginnings two years ago, the Fostering Friendship Therapy Dog Team continues to grow in numbers and expand its reach, which makes Kelly extremely happy and proud. Kelly explains, “If someone says, ‘Can you help me?’ I want to be able to say, ‘Yes.’”

Friendship Through the Decades

friends plan to visit the Isle of Palms where they will have plenty of time to talk and catch up on life. In between visits, they e-mail often, both to give updates and reminisce about the past.

Of the sixteen friends, nine live in WinstonSalem, two in Charlotte, two in South Carolina, one in Wilmington, one in Los Angeles, and one in Virginia. They remember each other’s birthdays and special occasions, and thanks to e-mail and the Internet, no one is left out due to distance.

The year was 1962.

Gas prices hovered around 30 cents per gallon, the first Wal-Mart store opened its doors, and the Beatles released their first single and changed the face of popular music forever. At R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, a group of sixteen friends, many of them close companions since elementary school, donned their caps and gowns. With the bittersweet expectation that graduation brings, these young women prepared to embark on the next stage of life, both excitedly primed for the possibilities that lay before them and anxiously aware that things were about to change.

And things did change. The friends moved forward in their own directions, building new relationships, forging careers, and raising families. Several of the women moved to other parts of the state and country, and many dug their roots deep in their hometown. All of the women, whether near or far, held their childhood memories close.

The year was 2012.

Gas prices neared $4.00 per gallon, Wal-Mart operated over 400 stores, and the next big musical sensations were chosen by a panel of celebrities on a reality television show.

Sixteen women reunited, along with two hundred of their classmates, for their 50th high school reunion. A few of the girls that lived in Winston-Salem after college had stayed connected through the years, but the others reconnected for the first time in a long time.

Amazingly, they picked up right where they left off. The old friends talked late into the night, reminiscing on memories like the time the other girls forced Betty to try pizza for the first time as a teenager at a slumber party, or the beach trips during summer vacation where the girls learned to water ski and sunbathed with baby oil mixed with iodine. They did not want the good times to end, so the women set a goal: they would commit to gathering for a meal at least once every three months and taking a trip together once a year. As they celebrated 50 years of life after high school, the women excitedly looked forward to the days ahead.

The year is now 2015,

and this group of friends, now in their 70s, has stuck to their commitment. They have already had many adventures together, including a trip to New York City last fall where they saw plays and visited the 9/11 memorial and other museums. This year, the

“There was a time in my life when I did not have many close girlfriends, when I was selfemployed with my husband and raising my children,” said Betty Johnson, who had only attended a couple of high school reunions before the 50th. “Now, I have friends I can call just to chat. My life has been enriched by my friendship with these women.” Her fifteen classmates and friends all echo the sentiment.

The world will continue to change, but this group of old friends will always have each other to reminisce with – about the days when prices were lower, life was simpler, and 50 years seemed like a lifetime away.

As high school graduates saying a bittersweet goodbye in 1962, these sixteen young women could not imagine how their paths would cross again, or that their future friendships would be deeper and even more meaningful than the ones they shared then.

As I mentioned, I’m not a nutrition expert, but I personally love it and wanted to share my recipe (and experience) with you.

By Brooke Eagle ince August is National Coffee Month, I thought it would be appropriate to share my favorite coffee recipe! Disclaimer: I’m not certified in anything nutrition related nor do I have a degree in anything related to health and nutrition… but I do have a passion for just about anything associated with fitness and health. I thoroughly enjoy reading articles and researching different aspects of health and personal well being. One healthy “trend” I started noticing several months ago was something called “bulletproof coffee.” The gist of bulletproof coffee is to mix grass fed butter and coconut oil in your coffee; it gives you an extra boost of energy, is full of (good) fats and can be beneficial for burning fat.

Now anyone who knows me (or who knows my mom, dad or brother) knows that we do NOT do butter… we don’t put it on our dinner rolls…we don’t top our toast with it… we carefully remove it when it’s accidentally added to our pancakes. We just don’t like it. So why would I add butter to my coffee you ask? Well, good question. But I’m glad did because I am definitely hooked on my bulletproof coffee.

Start by adding 1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of grass fed butter (I use unsalted Kerrygold) to your coffee cup. Next, add your coffee. Then pour the concoction into a blender or food processor and drizzle in about a teaspoon of local honey. Finally, (this is the most important step) pulse your blender or food processor for a few seconds and pour your frothy amazing-ness back into your coffee cup and sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top if you’d like. It’s that simple! I often make this before I workout in the mornings as a “pre-workout.” It does two things: it holds me over for another hour or two before I eat breakfast (I typically don’t eat breakfast before I work out), and it also gives me a BIG burst of energy. One final tidbit I’d like to add… you may want to start out with about a teaspoon or so of coconut oil and a teaspoon or so of butter and work your way up to a tablespoon of each. HELPFUL TIPS Storing: The manner in which you store your coffee matters to its overall taste! Nothing is worse than stale, flavorless coffee! The best way to store it is in an airtight glass or ceramic container that is kept in a dark and cool location.

Cleaning The Coffee Pot: Keep your coffee pot cleaning by periodically running 1 part distilled white vinegar and 1 part water through the machine, followed by 2-3 pots of clean water to flush out the vinegar smell. This will help remove the residue from brewing and other impurities.

You can use this same technique on a Keurig© (just don’t add a K-cup).

Ground Or Beans? Ground coffee does have the advantage of convenience. Scoop and brew! However, whole beans will always yield the freshest tasting coffee.

Where Can Your Bike Take You?

Corbett s summer begins to wind down, the back-to-school season officially starts, and it seems as though life will once again switch back to hectic and fast-paced, there are more than just a few things on our to-do lists each day. Before all the craziness commences, when was the last time you checked on the condition of your bicycle? Or your child’s bicycle? As soon as the summer temperatures begin to cool, many of us will once again be back on the roads of our neighborhoods enjoying some much needed relaxing outdoor time.

It is important to understand that routine bike maintenance is necessary, not just for the safety of the bike, but to extend the life of it and save money down the road. “As a rule of thumb, bike maintenance should be performed at least once a year, but it really depends on how often and how hard the bike is ridden,” said Josh Tucker, co-owner of Clemmons Bicycle. “For example, mountain bikes may need more service than road bikes or hybrids because of the conditions they may encounter on the trail. Certain parts on mountain bikes, like suspension and disc brakes, have service intervals that have to be kept, just like changing the oil in your car.”

Much like a car, it is usually apparent when a bike needs some attention. “Noise, leaking parts, mis-shifting drive-train, wheels that

don’t spin freely, brakes that squeal or grind, loose feeling parts – if you think something is wrong, it probably is,” said Tucker.

“Neglecting your bike can cause a lot of different types of damage, but most importantly it can cause serious personal injury. If tires/tubes are dry rotted or not holding air properly, they can deflate or explode while riding which can be very dangerous.

Rusted parts can be just as dangerous as they can also fail at any point during the ride. If it is not replaced once it is stretched to its full potential, it will start prematurely wearing out the more expensive parts of the drive train such as the cassette, chain rings and possibly derailleurs.”

Sonja Sepulveda Winston-Salem Youth Chorus Names New Artistic Director Dr. Sonja Sepulveda was appointed the Artistic Director of the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus this past June. She replaced Barbara C. Beattie who founded the WSYC in 1993 and who has impacted the lives of hundreds of youth over the years. Mrs. Beattie retired on June 30th and passed her baton to Dr. Sepulveda who will continue the mission and growth of the chorus.

Winston-Salem Youth Chorus Board Chair Art Bloom said, “We want to assure that Barbara Beattie’s legacy will continue by hiring a new artistic director who can bring exceptional musicianship, genuine passion for youth and understanding of the diverse needs of our talented singers. We feel that Dr. Sonja Sepulveda will bring all of these attributes to the position.”

Dr. Sepulveda graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of South Carolina where she directed the Renaissance Singers and Carolina Alive.

She is Director of Choral Activities and teacher at Salem College, and conducts the Salem Chamber Choir, Chorale and SuperTonix. She came to Salem following positions at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY, and Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA. Dr. Sepulveda’s choirs have toured Europe, Mexico and Canada, and have performed for the National Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, National American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Southern Division ACDA, and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). She conducted, as well as sang choral parts, for the ABC mini-series, North and South, and also sang with the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus for eight years. She frequently serves as guest conductor or clinician for festivals and choirs nationally and internationally.

Cheri Lingafelt Cheri Lingafelt is an interior stylist who has a passion for fashion and love for home decor.

Tabatha was born in Buffalo, New York and grew up in the Finger Lakes region of NY. A graduate of Jefferson Community College in Watertown, NY, Tabatha has a degree in Travel/Tourism.

She began her first job working for Premier Cruise Lines in the Bahamas before leaving to spend 10 years with Piedmont/USAirways. After leaving the travel industry, Tabatha’s career took a turn to the world of non-profits and event management. She held positions at 88.5 WFDD, Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem, WinMock at Kinderton and, currently, she is the coordinator of development events at Old Salem Museums and Gardens.

In addition to her full time job at Old Salem and her work with Forsyth Woman Engaged!, Tabatha does freelance work for a local florist and caterer. She is also on the Board of Whimsical Women artist group and volunteers at her son’s school.

Tabatha has been married to Bobby Renegar for 17 years and, together, they have a son, Beau (14) and she is a step-mom to Sean (22).

In her free time, Tabatha enjoys avoiding housework by working on whimsical art, exploring downtown and local events, and kayaking with her family and one-year-old Boston terrier, Norman.

embraced a few positive changes? What are the endless possibilities that could come about if we found ways to support, encourage and empower one another? Each month, we’ll explore a new way to embrace a way to live more gently, and hopefully, create a ripple effect in the lives around us.

Wise Words: “And oftentimes excusing of a fault doth make the fault the worse by the excuse.” ~William Shakespeare Reasons I was running late: “I couldn’t find my keys.”

“I was stuck in traffic.” “The dog was sick.”

Reasons I didn’t do my homework: “My internet was down.”

“I left the assignment in my locker.” “The dog ate it.”

Reasons I didn’t close that deal: “The customer was a jerk.”

“The competition under-bid me.” “I hit a dog on the way to the meeting.”

Let’s make one thing clear: There’s ALWAYS an excuse. For anything. For everything. Any time we fail to meet commitments, appointments, or expectations, we can find an excuse. The dog is often a convenient one, since let’s face it… it’s not like they’re going to tattle on us!

Excuses abound and are readily available, but are we possibly addicted to them? Think about it: When is the last time someone was late for an appointment or failed to meet an expectation and you heard the words, “It was my fault; I messed up.” Probably, it’s been a while. Because we’re a society who has mastered the good excuse.

In fact, it’s a defense mechanism. We make decisions, and then, work to rationalize them or justify them in the aftermath.

Why? Are we looking for reasons to explain poor choices?

Or to excuse bad behavior? Rationalizing our decisions with an excuse helps alleviate our own sense of personal guilt.

But why do we need to do it? We all know humans aren’t perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone makes an occasional bad decision. Everyone does something that may annoy or irritate another. Yet, we use our excuses as a Band-Aid on a bad habit rather that addressing the root of the problem…which may be as simple as being too lazy to break a bad habit.

Chronically late? It’s an easy fix – start getting ready earlier.

Failure to meet an assignment? Create an organization system, or ask someone who is naturally good at organizing to help you.

Missed opportunities? Then take ownership. Work harder to make decisions that will yield more positive outcomes.

Despite being a society full of excuses, no one likes hearing them (even chronic excuse-makers!) Our challenge this month (myself included), is to take responsibility for our actions. If you’re late, simply say, “I failed to budget enough time.” If you screw up a big account, acknowledge it and identify the steps that could have prevented it so that you don’t make the same mistakes again.

Excuses, schmexcuses. Let’s stop assigning blame and most of all, stop making excuses. Let’s collectively make the effort that for one month, we’re going to change this habit and instead, look for the opportunities to better ourselves rather than remain dependent on the excuses no one wants to hear.

Utensils and Cookware • Coconut oil acts as a lubricant, so pans greased with it will be easy to wash.

• Wooden cutting boards can become dry or difficult to clean, so wipe them down with a thin coating of coconut oil on occasion. This handy application will make a difference in your time and efforts in the kitchen.

h, coconut oil, there are many more reasons to love you. While last month clarified the differences between refined and unrefined coconut oil, and focused on medicinal, health, and beauty suggestions, this month will focus on ways to use coconut oil in the kitchen, house, and the garage. As the list expands even further, you will be surprised to learn coconut oil can assist with practically everything.

Mind the Gap

I noticed, and benefitted, from the fact that younger students tend to spend more time on campus, for various reasons, and I made sure to tap into that resource: where to eat, which professors to take (and which to avoid), what clubs to join (if that’s your thing), and how to tackle the parking problem (if there’s even a solution to that), among other things. It’s easy to make assumptions, like I did, about people from a different generation than you, but those assumptions don’t have to be permanent. Everyone has something to bring to the table; everyone has their own experiences and opinions and life lessons that differ from everyone else’s, and it’s cool to see when all of those things are brought together in a situation like a classroom, where people so different from each other might not have otherwise crossed paths.

Branching out, meeting each other, learning from each other…..it’s a great thing.

ugust can make us think of many things: the winding down of summer (although around here, the hot weather isn’t going ANYWHERE), the eality of fall being just around the corner, and for many folks, going back to school.

As we all know, going back to school isn’t just for “young” people. When I completed my degree, I was in my mid-thirties, and although I was outnumbered, I was still in good company.

Being an adult student brings a unique set of challenges with it. There are, of course, the usual suspects: juggling school with any combination of spouses, children, job, social lives, exercise (if that’s even on the radar), financial responsibilities… the list goes on. But aside from all of those, there can be the added confusion (awkwardness? hilarity?) of being in classes with people that are much younger than you. The age gap can take some getting used to, and it can sometimes cause problems in the communications department, not to mention occasionally make you feel incredibly old. Regardless, there are lots of good things that come with being in class with the millennials.

Millennials can: • Make you extremely grateful for the era you grew up in.

• Remind you that you don’t have to take yourself so seriously.

• Make you feel like you’ve got it more together than you really do.

• Help you to remember that even though being a “real adult” is a lot of work, it does come with lots of perks.

• Remind you that you’d probably never want to be that age ever again.

• Remind you that people of all different ages can be friends and learn from each other. “not so young” that you’re out of touch and have nothing to bring to the table.

• Bring a liveliness to the classroom, keep you on your toes, and make you laugh.

Going back to school for anyone can be a struggle, and it can be even worse if you feel out of place or if you don’t know anyone. It’s important to make an effort to talk to people and make a few friends. School can be isolating if you feel like you’re going at it alone.

Life Hacks – Back to School Tips and Tricks for Making Life Easier

There are countless problems you encounter on a daily basis that can put a little speed bump in your day. Life hacks are those “a-ha!” moments where you find the simplest solution to your daily problems, oftentimes using items immediately at your disposal. Each month this column will take you through some creative hacks to use in all different areas of your life to make your day-to-day as simple as possible. In preparation for back to school, here are some great life hacks to help you prepare for your own, or your children’s, return to class.

1. Morning routines can be a struggle if you’re not an early riser so anything that can be done in advance to get you out the door on time is worth a shot.

Why not set up a lunch station for you and your little ones? This can be done a couple of ways; you can have prepared lunches in bins in the fridge or cabinet or you can have 2 a collection of healthy goodies that you or the kids can pull from to put together quickly.

2. Getting adjusted to your new class schedule can be tough the first week or two. Instead of tucking that paper copy away in your pocketbook or book bag, snap a quick picture of it and set it as your phone’s background or the lock screen. Your phone is always at your fingertips and now your schedule is, too!

3. Studying solo can be great for focus but when it comes time to start reviewing your work it can present a challenge. If you’re knocking out a late night paper and need that extra review of your work, but there’s no roomie or study partner around, there’s no need to fret. Simply highlight and copy the text from your document, go to Google Translate and paste the text into the left box. Set it to translate to English and hit the microphone to read it aloud.

5. If you’re moving into a dorm room, closet space is typically quite limited, particularly if you have to fit multiple seasons in one closet. To salvage as much space as possible, start hanging on to the tabs from your soda cans and slide them onto the hooks on your hangers. Now you can hang another hanger from the open hoop on the tab.

4. With the massive amount of technology at our disposal these days it’s easier than ever to be distracted and procrastinate when you should be studying or working on that big paper. Luckily there are lots of options out there to help you with your self-control. Cold Turkey is a program for PC users that allows you to download and block an unlimited number of websites and set it on a timer that you can’t change until your time is up. There’s various versions with basic being free and pro running you a one-time fee of $14.99.

Mac offers a similar program in a free app called SelfControl.

6. When preparing to move into a dorm, the small decorative things can add up. It’s also safe to say that you’ll get 6 bored quickly and feel the need to change things throughout the year.

An easy and changeable decorative option is to frame photos and posters on the wall using washi tape. They don’t leave residue behind and the wall paint will be safe – plus it comes in countless colors and designs so your walls will never be boring.

F

or the past two years Rick Gustaitis, Jason Bodenhamer and Melanie Bodenhamer have been entertaining their audiences with their ‘Acoustic Americana’ sounds, focusing on the harmonies of Folk, Country and Acoustic as the band known as Sunrise Shadow.

Rick Gustaitis – Vocals, Guitar, Baritone Guitar, Mandolin As an Ohio native, Rick Gustaitis knew the winter of his home state and the lack of access to beaches and mountain would one day take him to another place, and in 1998, he moved to the Lewisville, NC area. Music has been a part of Rick’s life since the first time he heard sound come from a radio. “I remember hearing the Beatles for the first time at the age of 9 in 1963 and thought, ‘that is what I want to do.’ I bought my first album when I was 10 and I have been to over 400 concerts in my life, ranging from jazz, to country and rock. I grew up on Motown, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin and Johnny Cash, so my love of music is well-rounded,” said Rick. With his talent and skill on the guitar and mandolin self-taught, Rick took a guitar he inherited from his grandfather and began playing at 16, began writing songs at 17 and bought a Les Paul and formed his own band with friends in the late ‘70s. Since joining up with Jason and Melanie, Rick has continued to learn about harmonies from Jason.

Jason Bodenhamer – Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Dobro Jason Bodenhamer, a native of Pfafftown, NC, now living in Westfield, NC, began his love of music at a young age, playing piano and organ as a young child and then taking up guitar in college. “I fell in love with bluegrass and started playing around with all the typical bluegrass instruments. I met my wife Melanie in 1998 and taught her how to play the upright bass and we have been playing music ever since. Melanie and I have been heading up some form of bluegrass jam since 1998 and we now hold those jam sessions at our church, Nazareth Lutheran Church, in Rural Hall, NC. Since forming Sunrise Shadow, Rick, Melanie and I have been bringing a new creativity and passion to our music. Being able to play a wide variety of instruments and music from different styles has proven to be a lot of fun. The best part of it all is the reaction we get from people who come to see us.

There’s an honest interaction between us and the crowd that makes every show just a little different and I hope people enjoy it,” Jason commented.

Melanie Bodenhamer – Vocals, Bass As wife to Jason Bodenhamer, band member and mom to sons, Lee and Jackson, Melanie is quite busy, but loves sharing music with Jason and meeting those in their audience. “Growing up in Mt. Airy, NC, I started singing in church during my high school years and developed a new love of music. After meeting my husband Jason and learning bass from him, I started playing bluegrass music. I enjoy a higher level of satisfaction with the trio music because of its wide variety and its appeal to more people.

Connecting with an audience during a show is the best feeling and Jason, Rick and I love meeting everyone who comes to see Sunrise Shadow,” stated Melanie.

Sunrise Shadow plays at local wineries, restaurants and private parties, but are open to all venue offers.

When not performing, Rick, Jason and Melanie are collaborating on an upcoming CD featuring original songs. “We plan on recording a CD of original music written by Rick and Jason in the next few months and will also release a CD of our popular cover tunes.

Hopefully we will one day record a live CD and, as always, continue to improve on our skills as musicians,” Melanie said.

SECU Members Announce $1 Million Challenge Grant for SECU Hospice Home of Yadkin in their own homes. The home will be 10,000 square feet and will feature six patient suites with private baths and enclosed outdoor patios. There will also be a chapel, family living room, kitchen and dining area, a kids' playroom, a teen room, community meeting room with covered patio, a sunroom, covered porches and a beautiful courtyard with a view of Pilot Mountain.

"Our dedicated staff and well-trained volunteers provide professional, individualized care for those who need it most, and the new hospice home in Yadkin County will only enhance that service," said Watson.

Those patients needing hospice care had to be transferred outside of Yadkin County for end-of-life care which took them away from family and loved ones who, often times, could not travel to see them in neighboring communities.

According to a press release, “Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care has announced plans for building a hospice home in Yadkin County. Construction of the facility will be funded with monies raised in this year's capital campaign. The new hospice home will be located on land purchased by Mountain Valley at the SECU campus along North Lee Avenue in Yadkinville. It will be Yadkin County's first full service hospice facility.”

Denise Watson, the executive director of Mountain Valley Hospice attributed the success of the goal to build in Yadkin County to a very generous donation. "Our goal is to raise $2.5 million dollars, and I am happy to say that we are more than half way there thanks to a $1 million donation from the State Employee's Credit Union (SECU) Foundation," said Watson. “There just aren’t enough words to properly express my thanks to the members of SECU for their generous grant which will help us build a hospice home that will serve patients and their families in Yadkin County and throughout the region. The SECU Foundation has been a long-time supporter of our mission, and their challenge grant will not only boost our capital campaign, but I’m sure will inspire others to contribute as well.

We are extremely grateful for the gift and the continued support. The demand for hospice services is growing at a constant rate, and we do not see this trend slowing. Currently, about 35% of terminally ill patients in Yadkin County use hospice services, but with the new hospice home, we will be able to serve more patients who really want and need compassionate care."

Like all hospice facilities, the Yadkin County hospice will provide a private, home-like setting, designed specifically to provide end-of-life care for patients who can no longer stay

According to the press release, “For patients in Yadkin County whose terminal care cannot be accomplished at home, the current alternatives are the hospital or the nursing home. Indeed, 57% of all deaths occur in hospitals and 17% occur in nursing homes. While hospitals and nursing homes may be good places to receive acute care and rehabilitation, they may not be the right places for palliative, end-of-life care and death. Hospice provides palliative care – care that focuses on the patient’s comfort and quality of life – rather than curing care when curing the disease is not a realistic possibility.

In many ways, hospitals are not welldesigned or arranged for patients, their families and their friends who want to spend quality time together during the final days of life.”

hen it comes to fears, public speaking is one of the most common. In 2014, The Chapman Survey on American Fears reported that fear of public speaking ranked 5th on the overall list, behind walking alone at night, being a victim of identity theft, Internet crimes and being the victim of a mass shooting.

That’s a serious fear there to be ranked right behind mass murder!

Reasons for the fear include self-consciousness about being in front of a group of people and being judged, fear that their nervousness will be evident and a significant chunk of the fear comes from feeling unprepared.

“Many people procrastinate the things that they don’t want to do,” said Owner Denise Heidel. “And as public speaking is a common fear, many people wait until the last minute to prepare their speeches. Then, they find themselves worried about their choice of words and fear they may end up rambling.”

Vow To Be Different is a company designed to take the fear out of public speaking by making sure that the speakers are prepared and confident in their messages. hen it comes to knowing how to be a great friend, instructions are pretty basic. You know a true friend has your back…is loyal…supportive…always there…and so on. The act of being a true friend (or having a true friend) is something that simply cannot be underestimated. Friendship is so invaluable to our world that many have penned legendary songs about it. Let’s consider the lessons in friendship we can learn from some of my personal favorites.

My husband and son love the movie Napoleon Dynamite (personally, I think it’s a boy-thing…can’t get into it).

But, I admit that when they watch it, I do stop to listen to the opening credit song.

Sometimes, a friendship feels instantaneous…as if you’ve just met someone you have known for years. remember feeling that way when I met my best friend 17 years ago.

Lesson: Sometimes, you meet someone, and you just know.

For centuries, people have celebrated the things most treasured in life through song, and friendship is a common musical theme.

I challenge each of you to let your friends know what they mean to you…and, if you’re feeling particularly daring, sing it to them! (Personally, I love my friends too much to do that to them.)

What made you think about starting Farrago? Was it something you wanted to do as a child? Funny, as a child I wanted to be a schoolteacher.

The driving idea behind Farrago was creating a space of reprieve for our clients (friends), an oasis for taking it down a notch, relaxing and enjoying quiet time. People can come and relax with a hair stylist and shop, or get work done in several lounge rooms as they wait on hair processing. I’ve always enjoyed art, so it only makes sense showcasing local artists in the boutique. With so much local talent, nothing gives me more pleasure than networking. I love introducing people to other people, gaining new friends and business associates.

What was your first job? What was an important life skill you learned from it? Spending summers at my grandparents’ farm, my first job was weeding the garden, priming tobacco and driving the tractor, everything farm related. I treasure the wonderful memories with my grandparents, but I wouldn’t trade the grit and discipline of farm life for where I am now.

I learned I wanted an education/trade. From that job to today, I am still a hard worker; my job is filled with wonderful friendships and lots of laughter. Owning a business is long hours, hard work and stressful, but this is where I belong; it is downright fun! Being a hairdresser is perfect for me; I love people, being creative and the networking!

What was the most important life lesson you learned from your experience in business? Opening my own business at 19 years old, I’ve learned business is always changing, requiring re-inventing yourself, assessing the climate and changing with the times. Owning a business is in a lot of ways like being a parent, 24/7 – you never stop thinking about it; there is always something to do. Surround yourself with good like-minded people for success.

What is the biggest obstacle in your life today? How will you overcome it? Without a doubt, it is all the technology which does not come naturally for me. It continually frustrates me, but I'm determined to become adept at it. Technology is such a huge part of being in business, you must stay in touch with the way the younger generation gathers their knowledge, cultivating your next generation of clients.

What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a singer – either Linda Rhondstat or Emmy Lou Harris.

What is your favorite thing about Winston-Salem? The people here, the way this city offers a lot of the arts and lots of great independently owned restaurants. It genuinely feels like small business owners really do wish each other well, supporting and promoting one another. There is so much to do in this small town; it gives it a big town feel.

What defines a person as your friend? What trait draws you to them?

In order to be my friend, you just need to be yourself, have a heart, be considerate of others, non-judgmental and open-minded. We all have something good to offer and shortcomings. It’s a plus if you have a good sense of humor. Humor gets us all through the madness of every day.

Biggest lesson you’ve learned in your life (so far). By far, it’s that the things that seem to be the largest struggle turn out to be the best teachings and blessings.

Where/how do you like to volunteer your time? I volunteer at Hospice and travel to people's homes cutting their hair. It’s a very rewarding experience – really puts things in perspective. Hospice is one of the most amazing, impressive organizations around!

Denise Moseley Sometimes it’s just too hot to stay outside, so The Last Word went into the cool boutique and spa Farrago and sat with Owner Denise Moseley. Farrago, with services from spray tanning and massage to manicures and pedicures, also showcases local artists of the Triad. Denise poured both of us an ice-cold glass of water as we sat listening to music, clients and the sound of hairdryers.

What would you like your legacy to say? I helped friends get through hard times. Possibly they learned some things from me and that I made them laugh.

What’s your guilty pleasure? Swanky hotel rooms on nice vacations, acting wealthy and enjoying the finer things in life. After all, a vacation is supposed to be a break from reality, right?

What is the perfect retirement age, and why? I don’t believe in retiring.

When you love what you do, there is no need to retire. Perhaps slow down a little or lighten your schedule, making time for trips and life experiences.
