As we were preparing for the March issue, our family almost made a HUGE decision to adopt a rescue dog. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and I’m a bit sad about it, but my son Tanner is highly allergic to dogs. As it turned out, the Golden-Doodle we were looking at had more Golden than Doodle and wasn’t as hypoallergenic as we’d hoped.

The good news from the almost-adoption was that I made a new friend. Her name is Kim and she is the 'rescuer' of the dog we considered adopting. I have so much respect for what she does and her love for animals is so evident.

Though having a pet isn’t an option for our family at this time, the Forsyth Magazines team is FULL of animal lovers who have rescued many animals. If you have adopted a rescue animal, our hats off to you! And if you haven’t, and have the time and resources to do so, we encourage you to consider adopting a rescue pet. As the saying goes, “Saving just one dog won’t change the world, but surely it will change the world for that one dog.” Whether you are adopting a rescue dog, cat, or other animal, it’s one more pet that has found a forever home.

You Are Not Alone

H

ave you been having trouble getting pregnant? Even though you feel all alone, you are not. Roughly one out of every seven women under the age of 45 suffers from infertility, or the inability to get pregnant in one year.

Imagine that – a group of ten women get together for coffee or a book club and two cannot get pregnant. Since infertility is a couple’s disease, the numbers are the same for men. If you are one of those couples, you feel devastated.

Isolation creeps in because you don’t want to tell those around you.

Family events, church outings, and holidays are unbearable – you dread the question “When are you going to have a baby?”

In you are unable to conceive, don’t believe comments such as “just relax and you’ll get pregnant” or “you’re too stressed out.” With current technology, nine out of ten couples are diagnosed with a physical reason for their infertility. So it is not in your head.

There is no reason to feel ashamed or feel like a failure. The most common causes of infertility are irregular cycles, tubal blockage, pelvic scar tissue, sperm abnormalities, such as low counts or low motility, and low egg quality due to advancing age. If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, take the first step and visit your gynecologist to determine the cause. Most couples will have a diagnosis after a few simple office tests.

Now for the good news. Due to advances in the past 10 years, most causes of infertility are treatable. If you are a woman with irregular cycles, there are excellent fertility medications that usually lead to a pregnancy. If you have scar tissue or tubal damage, in vitro fertilization (often called IVF) is successful in a majority of cases. If you are a man with sperm abnormalities, then simple office inseminations can often lead to a pregnancy. Many treatments are straightforward and inexpensive, and many employers in the Triad provide insurance coverage for the treatment of infertility.

In fact, the past 10 years has been a time of incredible advancement in the treatment of infertility, mainly due to IVF. This process involves fertility medications followed by the removal of the eggs from the ovaries by a simple office procedure. Once the eggs are out of the body, they are fertilized with a sperm sample and then the healthy fertilized eggs are placed into the woman’s uterus. With IVF, it is even

possible to take a single sperm and inject it into a single egg!

This is a process called ICSI and it is able to help even the most serious infertility conditions. Over half of the couples under the age of 36 have a successful pregnancy with a single try of IVF. Even though the pregnancy rate begins to drop after the age of 35, many of these couples are also able to get pregnant and deliver a healthy child. And remember, many couples achieve a pregnancy with simple office procedures such as fertility medications and inseminations and do not even need to go the route of IVF. So what are you waiting for? Like other medical conditions, take the first step and visit a doctor to determine the cause of your infertility. Most gynecologists can begin the process and refer you to a reproductive endocrinologist (a doctor with advanced training and certification in infertility) if needed.

TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF MAINTAINING A HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR LIFE!

ince opening the flagship store of Earheart Healthy Weight Loss in Winston-Salem last fall, Linda Finch has already felt a strong sense of community. That’s one of the reasons she chose this area to launch a program that she first tested in her home state of Texas.

She hopes the program will soon have a national presence and be a major force in the ongoing battle against obesity in the United States.

Finch is no stranger to the impact of setting goals and stretching oneself beyond what appear to be personal limits. In 1997 she recreated and completed the legendary Amelia Earhart’s aroundthe-world flight. Along the way, she turned her own adventure into an educational curriculum for school children, and now she’s hoping to share her passion for education from a different perspective – that of taking control of personal health and well-being.

Inspired by her own weight loss success, Finch built the Earheart program around empowering her clients to be stronger and more aware of the limits they set in their own lives. After two personal tragedies of her own, she realized how easy it was to lose control of your weight and ultimately, control of your life. She did manage to drop excess pounds in all the traditional ways, but it always came back.

She fought it – along with elevated blood pressure and blood sugar – for 10 years with no positive, lasting results. So she did her research and teamed up with doctors to find a healthy weight loss method – ultimately finding a combination of diet and supplements that work and, most of all, that stick.

“Our clients lose weight and keep it off because they lose it in a healthy way,” says Finch. “Dieting is a very emotional thing for women. Often weight gain is tied to emotional experiences. It’s not always just about what you eat.”

Finch also says that about one third of the clients in the Winston-Salem are men. A high protein healthy meal plan is individually designed to meet the patient’s needs, based on age, sex, current weight, medical history and level of physical activity. The program itself can be picked up from a Healthy Weight Store or shipped to the patient’s home. Although exercise is recognized as vital to overall health and wellbeing, it is not necessary with the Earheart plan.

At the heart of the program (which, as the name implies, participants should be listening to their hearts when it comes to their bodies) is not only weight loss, but an increase in energy and a return to a normal diet following the sixweek program and a transition period. For Finch, gaining control of her weight issues helped her change many other aspects of her life – all for the better.

What is Strabismus?

By Vic Khemsara, MD trabismus is the inability of two eyes to work in harmony and maintain proper alignment. If you have strabismus, one of your eyes looks directly at what you are viewing and the other eye does not. If it is looking inward, it is called esotropia; if outward, it is called exotropia; if upward, it is hypertropia; and if downward, it is hypotropia.

To prevent double vision from early childhood, the brain ignores the visual input from the eye that is looking away, which leads to amblyopia or "lazy eye" in that eye. Four percent of the US population has some form of strabismus.

There are six extraocular muscles that control eye position and movement. For normal binocular vision, all six eye muscles must be coordinated perfectly. Strabismus occurs when there are neurological or anatomical problems that interfere with the control and function of the extraocular muscles.

Genetics may also play a role. If your immediate family has a history of strabismus, your children have a greater risk of having it.

Treatment involves either glasses, surgery, or patching.

When a child that is farsighted is focusing hard to compensate for his uncorrected farsightedness, he will develop accommodative esotropia.

This usually occurs before two years of age and can be corrected fully with eyeglasses.

In most cases, the only treatment is surgery. This involves an eye surgeon who specializes in pediatric eye surgery. The success of strabismus depends on several factors and more than one surgery may be required.

Adults that have long-standing strabismus can also have their eyes treated with surgery. However, in most cases of adult strabismus, a significant degree of amblyopia can remain. That is why the earlier the treatment, the greater chance of developing normal vision.

In some cases, intermittent and small angle strabismus can be improved with vision therapy. For example, convergence insufficiency occurs when one can see distance properly but cannot maintain proper alignment when looking at close objects. This can cause eye strain, blurred vision, double vision, and headaches. Nonsurgical vision therapy can be effective in treating this condition. In a study published in Archives of Ophthalmology, 73% of 221 children with symptomatic convergence insufficiency had a successful or improved outcome following 12 weeks of vision therapy.

After surgery, your surgeon may recommend a program of vision therapy to treat amblyopia or small binocular vision problems.

Questions to ask your eye doctor or strabismus surgeon: 1) If surgery will be needed, ask whether one surgery will suffice or if additional procedures are likely or necessary.

2) Ask what the criteria for success are. Is success defined as perfect alignment or better alignment, reducing the eye turning?

A FANATIC’S VIEW OF RESURRECTION What memories does Easter conjure up for you? Reflecting on my childhood evokes vivid images of matching Easter dresses Grandma made for my mom, my sister and me. I can almost smell the ham cooking as I recall generous feasts with extended family. Easter egg hunts in the backyard were always an adventure. Oh yeah, somewhere in all the celebration, we attended church. Mom insisted. If you ask me, she was a little fanatical about the whole “Jesus thing.” I’m not kidding. She actually thought a person’s view regarding Jesus’ resurrection impacted everything the individual believed about everything else! (Told you she was a fanatic!)

So much has changed since those youthful days. I’ve experienced life and learned a few things along the way. I’ve attended some great schools and studied a myriad of views. I’ve traveled many parts of the world, encountering gracious people from diverse cultures. I’ve experienced seasons of doubt and at times it seemed I had the wind at my back. Through it all, I’ve come to realize a life-changing truth. My mom was right. Indeed, what a person believes about Jesus’ resurrection impacts everything that individual believes about everything else! (Yes, I have become the fanatic!)

The reality is that if there’s no resurrection, so many things we consider vitally important really aren’t that significant at all. Think about it. If there’s no resurrection, why not succumb to every urge, no matter how reckless and destructive?

Take what I want, no matter whom it hurts. Live for the moment with no concern for tomorrow. None of it matters. After all, I'm just a clump of cells . . . unless there’s a resurrection.

I can assume it doesn’t matter what I believe because all viewpoints are equally valid.

Well, except Christianity, of course. Christians are naïve pushovers needing a crutch to provide false hope. It’s the “opiate of the masses,” Marx explained. In fact, Christianity is so misleading that it should be banned from society. That is . . . unless there’s a resurrection.

Do whatever it takes to get ahead. Toss self-discipline and character to the wind.

Being faithful to your spouse? Why? Get even with those who hurt you.

Forgiveness? Never!

Let the defenseless care for themselves. What's it got to do with me? Besides, they’re eventually going to die anyway. WE ALL ARE, and then what? Nothing! It’s all so hollow, so hopeless, that is . . . unless there’s a resurrection.

If Jesus truly defeated every power by His ultimate power, then life has purpose. I matter. What I do matters. There’s value to my living beyond what I presently see. If the resurrection is real, then Jesus is undeniably the Son of God so I can believe what He says. Get this! Christ says, when we invite Him to dwell in us, Jesus infuses us with resurrection power to overcome also. No more wandering through defeated, directionless lives.

I don’t know what you believe about Jesus’ resurrection. Perhaps you have believed it all your life but then again, you’re realizing you’ve never wholeheartedly embraced its truth. Maybe the whole idea is a little over the top for you. You think people like me take this whole “Jesus thing” entirely too seriously. You’re probably right. I am a little off my rocker. I am making much to do about nothing. I sound like a foolish fanatic, don’t I? That is . . . unless there’s a resurrection.

Don’t you see? Everything we believe about everything really does hinge on the reality of the resurrection. If the Son of God didn’t really die that tortuous death for our sake and physically rise with resurrection power that Easter morning, then there’s neither rhyme nor reason to this journey called life. It’s ultimately pointless. But if the Son of God actually did conquer death and humiliate the grave, it changes everything!

It means He really is who He says He is, and I really am who He says I am.

By Meghan E.W. Corbett Many of life’s problems are simple to fix. We are hungry, we get something to eat; we are tired, we go to sleep; we can’t hear the television, we turn up the volume. The issue with that last problem though, is that turning up the volume is not always an option. Millions of Americans have some sort of hearing loss caused by genetics, noise, trauma or age.

When we think of hearing loss, our first thought centers around bulky hearing aids and obnoxious side effects, but hearing solutions have come a long way since then, and hearing care should never be ignored.

“We want people to come for annual check-ups whether they suspect they have hearing loss or not,” said Billie Swift, Hearing Instrument Specialist at Avada Hearing Care. For those who do suspect some hearing loss, the “signs of hearing loss include asking people to repeat, turning the television louder than others, increased difficulty understanding in large environments, ringing in the ears and reading lips to understand.”

oday’s woman has her hands full, no doubt about it! From taking care of her hubby or significant other’s needs, to getting everything done for her kids, chauffeuring and tutoring, time for her is limited. Still, women know they need to exercise and eat right because staying healthy is the only way they can continue to care for others. It’s kind of like the old saying with an update, “If Momma ain’t healthy, ain’t nobody healthy.” Many women are turning to Zumba, a dance and fitness program with aerobic elements, which has become a fun alternative to hitting the gym and weights. It’s the exercise phenomenon that is sweeping the nation, and on February 1, 2013, it invaded Hanes Mall!

The Zumba Flash Mob & Health Fair at Hanes Mall was held to celebrate the American Heart Association’s national awareness movement, Go Red for Women, ‘celebrating the energy, passion and power of women to join together and wipe out heart disease, the number one killer of American women and men.’

More Fun, More Participation Cheryl Lindsay, founder of H.E.A.R.R.T (Help Educate And Reduce Risk Today) and the organizer of the Zumba Flash Mob & Health Fair at Hanes Mall, has made her group’s mission addressing the need for education and programs on heart health, fitness, childhood obesity and overall nutrition. “The event brought together approximately 200-300 women of all ages and diversities to have fun and, most importantly, educate them on heart health and the resources that are available to reduce the risk of heart disease. With the help of Helen Naples of Women’s Wellness and Fitness Center, and Tracy York of ZT Studio, I really feel like we showed the ladies of the Triad that they can have fun and exercise all at the same time,” stated Cheryl.

The ladies in attendance at the Zumba event were of all ages and all stages of life, but they shared a love of being together with their friends, having fun and doing something good for themselves. “Zumba is about having fun and connecting with others. You are much more likely to make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle if you have friends to support you and hold you accountable, and that’s what is great about Zumba,” Cheryl commented. Beyond shaking a leg and getting their heart healthier, the women learned about the great farms and programs that are available to them and their families to have better eating habits.

“We had Cobblestone Farmer’s Market and Harmony Ridge Farms at the event sharing the wonderful items that we have in the area to make better food choices. Harmony Ridge Farms has a program, CSA, where you can sign up to have fresh, inseason vegetables and fruits boxed and available for pick up each week. The box feeds approximately four people and knowing that you have the best and freshest items waiting for you to prepare, you are less likely to make those quick stops at fast food places. It’s not about being on a ‘diet,’ it’s about understanding that the more good food you eat, prepared in a healthy way, the healthier you will be, and the less likely you will make poor choices in the future,” said Cheryl.

Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques: A Snapshot of Our Gallery

By Ryan Laster hen you first walk into our gallery, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the artwork and pieces of furniture that surround you. Please, don’t feel that way! We are open and welcoming to everyone that graces our doorway and want to spend time with us. Many of our customers are regulars that come to see us on a weekly (even daily) basis, saying they always missed something the last time around. For those who have not been to our gallery before, I’d like to show you a few of the things you are missing out on seeing.

Andy Anderson Carvings One of the most recent additions to our gallery is a collection of woodcarvings by American great Herbert S. “Andy” Anderson. Andy was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. At the age of 16, Andy left home to work as a cowboy, and that experience would go on to influence his carvings. He moved to California in 1927 where he began to really flourish as a woodcarver, creating characters of the Old West. During World War II, most of his carving went to high-ranking officials in the Army, and one even made its way to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Andy is considered one of the great masters of 20th century woodcarving. His work may not appeal to everyone, but you can’t deny the talent he truly had.

His wooden characters display so much emotion and personality, you almost expect them to begin walking and talking.

He travelled to Montana at the age of 19 and witnessed the shrinking buffalo herds, wide-open prairies, and the last skirmishes between the U.S. Calvary and Native Americans. He would later depict the things he saw out West in many of his artworks. The Bronco Buster is one of his most famous works, which was also the first sculpture he ever attempted. Theodore Roosevelt was awarded a bronze copy of The Bronco Buster which Remington said was “the greatest compliment I ever had…After this everything will be mere fuss.”

These are just a few examples of all the items we handle in our gallery.

We have many things that belong to the store, but we also accept consignments. Our consignors receive 60% of the final sale price of the items they have consigned with us. We handle fine art, high-end and antique furniture, jewelry, sterling flatware, decoys, pottery, civil war items, rare books, old maps and prints, sculptures, and other accent pieces.

Stephen White Chances are you have seen Stephen White’s work somewhere in North Carolina, whether it has been at a friend’s house or another gallery you frequent. Stephen has created a name for himself based on the unique style and characters in each of his works. His art is heavily influenced by Asian culture and it really shows. When you see his work, you’ll notice a theme: Asian women dressed in cultural attire with large hats or large hair. Once you know what his art looks like, you will be able to spot it from a mile away. We have had a number of people walk in to our gallery and say “Look! It’s a Stephen White!” and that always makes us smile.

Stephen has become a good friend of ours since we opened our gallery and he comes to visit us every few weeks. So if you’re lucky, you might run into him one day!

The Bronco Buster by Frederic Remington Frederic Remington was an American painter, sculptor, writer, etcher, and illustrator who specialized in depictions of the Old West, concentrating on images of cowboys and Native Americans of the late 19th Century. He attended the art school at Yale but dropped out to tend to his dying father. After his father had passed, Remington did not want to

We’d also like to announce the sale and subsequent donation of the portrait of Earline “Heath” King that hung in our gallery. The portrait was donated by the Taylor family to the Sawtooth Center in downtown Winston-Salem. Ms. King played a vital role in bringing arts to the community with the sculpting classes she taught at the center. We could not have asked for a better final resting place of Earline’s portrait.

For owners Brenda Maready and Brenn Kennedy, knowing their business means knowing their customers. I met the owner, DeeDee Shaw, we became friends and soon decided to grow the business together,” recalled Brenda. But for Brenda and her daughter, Monkee’s is more than a business. It’s a place where friends come by and visit, taking time out of their busy days to chat, as well as to shop for the latest clothing, shoes and accessories fashions from designers Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Shoshanna, Lilly Pulitzer, DVF, Jack Rogers, Ferragamo, Michael Kors, Hunter Boots, Stuart Weitzman and Rebecca Minkoff, to mention a few.

“We offer shoppers a unique and intimate shopping experience.

Our sales associates know our customers by name and the store is designed to reflect the feeling of being invited into our living room, where customers can sit, socialize and enjoy a cup of coffee,” Brenda said. Since 1997, Monkee’s has grown into a thriving business, both locally and through franchises, with

21 stores in seven states. In those early years, the news of Monkee’s and its beautiful offerings spread by word of mouth, friends chatting over lunch about the new spring shoes or the latest trunk show. But these days, word of mouth is onscreen, via social media outlets and Monkee’s has stepped up to the virtual bat to bring their business to their customers, around the corner and around the country.

We are able to offer a sneak peek of what is in the store before our customers head our way and it’s a good way to introduce the store to those who have yet to shop with us,” Brenda commented. Getting the ‘Secret’ Out Online “Undoubtedly, social media has grown our business by letting people in on the Monkee’s ‘secret’ who might not have known us before. The technology of showing what is trending or reading up on our friends’ Facebook news feed provides the opportunity for others to ‘like’ us or to click on our Facebook page to learn more about the Monkee’s business,” said Brenda. In this day and time, it’s not enough to just be on the web – you have to appeal to your audience and get them interested in you and your business, which Brenda has done.

“We are currently doing ‘Tag It to Win It’ giveaway for our Facebook friends. They have to tag themselves in a photo, like the photo and comment on it in order to be in the running to win the giveaway for that week. We also provide promotions about various Trunk Shows and after hours parties through our Facebook page. Getting our customers’ feedback online about the shop helps us to address their needs better,” said Brenda. Sharing the fashion trends for upcoming seasons is also done through the internet.

Try Breaking A Few Decorating Rules

ReDESIGNS by Ava “First of all, there really aren’t rules! That is, the decorating police will not arrest you for making a mistake in your décor.

The neighbors might talk if you painted the whole house orange, and the authorities might object to a fire hazard. But most of us aren’t in danger of these extremes. What we want are a few basic guidelines for tasteful and inexpensive decorating.” ~~E. Barnes and Y. Brogger

s a decorator, I have my own rules of thumb when it comes to decorating. I always try to keep in mind that these are rules of thumb and guidelines for me to use…..not rules written in stone. So many times clients have told me, “I read somewhere or someone told me that pictures should be hung at eye level.” But eye level for me, at 5’ 8”, is very different from eye level for my brother, at 6’4”.

A good rule of thumb or guideline is that artwork that will be viewed while standing, like in a hallway, should be hung approximately 60” from the floor to the middle of the height of the picture.

Artwork hung in a room where people will almost always be seated should be 56” to 57” from the middle of the height of the picture to the floor.

Adjust accordingly but this is the average and should be comfortable for most people.

When in doubt, use beige; it goes with everything. The grain of truth in this common assumption is that neutral colors can be very relaxing and usually blend easily with other colors. Beige is far from the only neutral! Any “earth color”… white, black, gray, brown, terra-cotta and especially green and blue….can serve the same purpose and be far more interesting.

The sofa goes against the wall.

Not always! Instead of lining up the furniture square against the wall, you might try setting some pieces at an angle or creating small conversational groups away from the walls.

Befores

Paint small rooms pale colors to make them look bigger. It’s not necessarily bad to paint your tiny study a dark color. The dark color can emphasize its cozy character and make it more interesting.

Painting a large room a pale color can emphasize its airiness. Think of the statement you want to make, not what rules you’ve read.

Anything goes. Go ahead and break a few rules, but keep in mind that the principles of balance, harmony and comfort still prevail.

Preconceived decorating rules that have come from decorating books or magazines, HGTV, a friend, or even our mothers may need to be broken. Not long ago I came across an article that I had saved called “Decorating Rules Made to Be Broken” by Emilie Barnes and Yoli Brogger. I am sure you have heard some of these and would agree….they may need to be broken.

Don’t use white….it shows dirt. As long as they’re washable and bleachable, pure white slipcovers, curtains, towels and rugs can actually be the most practical accessories of all. However, use care when making everything white because it may not always be practical.

It all has to match. In fact, a mix of styles, colors and periods of furniture can be visually exciting. Just try to have a common element, such as a color or design motif, to tie them all together.

You need a round cloth for a round table. Too much “matchy” can be boring. Draped beautifully, or even tied up at the corners, a square or rectangular cloth will do just fine on any table.

You need a sofa, a chair and a coffee table.

Try to get rid of your preconceived notions about what you “ought” to have in a room and think about how the room is to be used. Remember, function is the main consideration.

adies, got a special event coming up and your teeth are not as white as you would like? No time to see your dentist to pursue professional whitening? What can you do to make your teeth appear whiter than they really are? Here are a few simple tips and tricks to get you smiling.

1. Wear blue based lipstick. The red family will always make your teeth appear whiter. Red not your color? Avoid yellow or orange lipsticks as they will give the illusion your teeth are browner than they truly are. Matte, pale and frosted choices will leave your teeth looking dull. Choose lipsticks that are not close to the color of your complexion as the contrast is too little, making your teeth appear darker. Gloss with some color is always preferable than nude lips when you are in a hurry. Get out of your rut and experiment with some new colors. But remember to keep the lipstick off your teeth and touch up your color every couple hours.

2. Wear a bronzer or use sunless tanning products.

The contrast of your skin to your teeth will be increased, making your teeth look whiter. Add the colored lipstick, and your look will really pop. Tanning beds and too much sun exposure are not recommended to give you this contrast. Wrinkles and putting yourself at risk for skin cancer are not worth it. And don’t forget to make sure when you are out in the sun that you wear lip products that have sunscreen in them. Lip cancers are on the rise.

3. Avoid bright white clothing, especially around your face. It is too easy to use your bright white clothing as a shade guide for your teeth. If you don’t have bright white teeth to match your white clothing, your teeth will lose the battle every time. The new clothing trend is color – lots of color. Vibrant colors make you feel happy and this will make you smile more no matter what is going on around you. Wear “bright bold power outfits” on those really important days, keeping in mind the above tips.

4. Believe it or not, the color of your jewelry can influence the perceived color of your teeth. Gold tones will make your teeth look more yellow. Silver and rhinestones will bring out the whiteness.

fter 29 years, Dr. Grant Wright still finds chiropractic exciting. “Everybody is different. No two spines are alike and each patient presents a new and unique challenge.”

This Illinois native says he has always been interested in how things work, whether in the realm of car mechanics, wood working or nature. While taking biology and chemistry in college, Dr. Wright became interested in manual medicine.

After talking with several chiropractors, he decided chiropractic was a good match for him. “Chiropractic was a perfect combination of subjects I was interested in, along with the ability to work with my hands and work with the most complex system in the world, the human body.”

Following graduation from Logan College in St. Louis, Dr. Wright moved to North Carolina and began practicing in 1984. In 1988, he purchased Wagner Chiropractic Office located on Main Street, where he continues to practice today, alongside his devoted support staff.

As a chiropractor, Dr. Wright treats people of all ages, including children, by adjusting the spine with easy, manual thrusts to restore function and alignment. But chiropractors are more than just spinal doctors, he said. “A lot of people don’t realize we work with ALL joints of the body, including arms and legs, treating people with conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis.”

Dr. Wright’s curiosity has led him in different directions in search of additional techniques, including acupuncture.

Certified in 1996, he says acupuncture analysis helps by providing him with more detailed information about how disease processes move through the body. This knowledge, along with his experience with joint and nerve problems, informs the decisions he makes regarding what interventions are likely to improve each patient’s condition.

Additionally, Dr. Wright has obtained certification in industrial consulting, including ergonomic evaluation of the work environment. “The layout of a person’s work station is a common cause of neck pain,” he says. If a person’s workstation is not set up properly, physical problems often result. “Removing or changing activities that stress our spines almost always helps reduce recurring problems and chronic pain.” A more sedentary lifestyle, which often starts at work, also leads to spine and joint issues. “People are more sedentary now than they have ever been,” says Dr. Wright.

“People often sit at work all day, they sit in the car on the way home, and then they sit once they get home. The human body is meant to be in motion; otherwise, it sets the stage for muscular deterioration and injury.”

Dr. Wright wants people to live a true wellness lifestyle. “The way I look at it, chiropractic is a very effective technique, but it’s just one part of a much bigger picture called Wellness.” In addition to the actual adjustment, Dr. Wright encourages people to be conscious of the food and drink that goes in their bodies and to continue with prescribed exercises. “Your body’s cells are constantly changing over and regenerating. As you heal, they need the proper building blocks. If a patient is getting spinal adjustments but not eating and moving correctly, chiropractic will help, but the long term result won’t be as good as it could be.”

This is why Dr. Wright believes the relationship between a patient and doctor should be more of a partnership.

“I ask patients what they want to accomplish with their treatment, and I work with them to reach those goals.

My goal is to help people take more control over what is happening with their bodies.”

As Dr. Wright notes, having regular spinal check-ups isn’t that much different than having regular dental exams – with one BIG difference.

“You can get dentures for your teeth if they deteriorate, but you can’t get dentures for your spine.”

and how we can protect our water,” Roseann said, alluding to her role as senior community educator for WinstonSalem’s Stormwater/Erosion Control Department. “Forsyth Creek Week is a much more positive approach, focusing on all the awesome uses of our water and how lucky we are to have so many creeks and streams in Forsyth County.”

As Roseann’s comments indicate, Forsyth Creek Week, presented by North State Environmental and being held March 16-23, is a first-ever weeklong celebration of our local waterways. The schedule is full of fun, educational and hands-on opportunities to discover, explore, and help our local creeks and streams. The list includes bird walks and “creek crawls,” fishing derbies, water-themed films, kayak demonstrations, a fly-fishing clinic, activities for preschoolers and homeschoolers, a photo contest, and workshops on how to restore an eroding backyard stream or capture rainwater for use in the garden.

In addition to these recreational and educational activities, Forsyth Creek Week offers three opportunities to tangibly help our waterways. The 3RC Envirostation, which recycles hazardous household waste, will hold extended

residents can turn in unneeded medications and prevent the damage that occurs when medications are flushed down the toilet, because sewage treatment plants cannot neutralize pharmaceuticals. And because litter can wash into our waterways, Creek Week will wrap up with the Great American Cleanup on Saturday, March 23.

All these activities represent the culmination of a year of preparation that started after Roseann read a news brief about Durham County’s Creek Week. “I thought, ‘That sounds like a cool idea.’ So I went online and saw the variety of activities they were sponsoring and I just loved the idea.”

After getting a commitment from her boss to start a Creek Week here, Roseann started pulling together a coalition of local agencies and organizations to make it happen.

“Everyone I approached about being part of this immediately said, ‘Oh, what a great idea.’ And the longer we worked at it, we heard from other groups that wanted to be part of it, too.

“Now, our hope is that as residents learn about Creek Week, they will want to be part of it, too.”

Honesty is the Best Love Policy

I

f you made a list of relationship resolutions for the year it might be a good time to take a two-month inventory of your progress so far. Maybe you were successful in improving your health, being more social, or even landing a date for Valentine’s Day. An honest assessment of your progress could keep you motivated and actively searching for that sexy, smart, attractive man, or a hard look inward could move you to rededicate yourself to giving your best effort toward meeting those resolutions.

If you did have a date on Valentine’s Day, are you still dating Mr. February 14th or was he more like Mr. Never Again? An honest self-assessment may have you asking yourself why your Valentine date (or any date for that matter) was a dud and not a delight. Maybe one or both of you were not truthful with each other prior to the date about your expectations, either online, on the phone, or through mutual friends. Little white lies about things like age, fitness, likes and dislikes, or even past relationships could turn from seemingly harmless to absolutely devastating.

Your mom probably told you that honesty is the best policy, and she was right. Honesty is a key to sustaining a fulfilling relationship. But what is the harm in fudging the truth about your age, educational degree, or love (or maybe hate) for fly fishing? Besides, it is tax season and who hasn’t been tempted to tell a few white lies to Uncle Sam about their taxes? Little fibs to Uncle Same will catch up with most of us eventually (a tax audit here, back taxes there). Fibbing to a date will eventually catch up with you, too. And if there really is a lack of eligible men, why would you want to be dishonest to any potential Mr. Right?

You may feel like you need to like all things masculine, look like a movie star, and be under 30 years of age to experience success in dating. But the opposite sex is in the same boat. Men probably dislike things, too, like shopping, antiquing, talking incessantly about their pets, watching reality TV, talking for hours on the phone, and discussing recipes. And they probably are quicker at voicing their desires, even though they may be just as likely to fib about their age.

So do you lie about what you like and dislike just to land a date? Hopefully not. Think back to that advice from your mom or apply the “Four Way Test” from a club called Rotary which promotes a truthful approach to life. Rotarians ask the following about any action:

Do you even need to resolve the differences? Is it fair or beneficial to ask someone to change in order to better fit your interests? Generally speaking, most men and women who are dating are looking for the same things: happiness, companionship, true love, a certain degree of shared interests, and intimacy. Honesty paves a much smoother road to finding these gems in a relationship than a journey interrupted by lies.

So are you honestly making progress toward your resolutions about fitness, fashion, or sex appeal? Are you ready for that lucky night when you might get “lucky”? Let’s hope so, but even if the progress is slow, it should not stop you from trading granny panties for a matching set from Victoria’s Secret, making plans to take a trip to the mountains, or doing those extra crunches that make taking your clothes off in front of Mr. Right a more confident performance.

If you spent Valentine’s Day at home watching Sleepless in Seattle or You’ve Got Mail, stay the course on your resolutions. Patience is a virtue and is especially helpful in dating. Don’t give up on the possibility of finding a date, especially if you try some new approaches and not the same tired Friday night routine. Doing the same old thing gets the same old results, says Omar! Join a club for the first time, like Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, a book club (preferably a coed club).

Try a new sport, new class, or new park to walk in. Practice going on a date test run with a good friend and ask for honest feedback on any annoying habits, hygiene issues, wardrobe choices, or boring topics of conversation (your pets, your illnesses, or your favorite scrapbook store). Once you are in a relationship, you should continue practicing honest feedback. If your boyfriend asks if you like his beard, don’t say, “I love the way it tickles” if you really hate the way it scratches. Eventually the truth with come out and may ruin a potentially good relationship when a little honesty in the beginning might have saved it. As the Rotarians say, “Is it the truth?”

hey just don’t make things like they used to. Whether you have heard this saying or found yourself saying it, we can all agree that we wish “they” still made quality products. Since most of us cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars on a single piece of furniture in order to enjoy that hard-to-find quality craftsmanship, it is lucky we have another way to get the quality of the past at prices we can handle: 2nd Dibs Furniture in Clemmons.

“My dad, Frank McGraw, and I opened 2nd Dibs to honor the memories we shared with my mother and to create a store she would be proud of,” said Owner Lindsay Owen. “My parents have loved antique furniture longer than I have been alive. They have hunted, bought, decorated with and sold antiques on and off my whole life. What has always been a hobby for them quickly turned into a passion. As I grew up, I knew I had acquired my mom’s love and gift for decorating.

She and I were always coming up with ideas for our own business to do together. In August of 2009, our lives drastically changed when my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and, after a courageous battle, she passed away in May of 2010. As therapy, my dad turned to their lifelong passion of ‘antiquing’ to pass the time. I would tell him what I needed for my house, and he would find it for me.

I started ‘restyling’ the pieces he found to fit my style.

Quickly, we filled up his garage and a storage building with these, what we now refer to as ‘treasures.’ After several months of this, and with the support of a wonderful husband and two very understanding children, I quit my full-time job to concentrate on our adventure -- 2nd Dibs! We started setting up at craft shows, advertising on sites like Craigslist and Facebook, and got our own website. After about a year, we realized if we wanted to reach our goals, we really needed a storefront. After lots of prayer and a huge leap of faith, here we are!”

he long cold months of winter are nearing an end.

Mother Nature could still hit us with a punch or two of cold spells, but in general, March is a time to start thinking about longer, warmer days and outdoor activities. March also signals the need to bring out the t-shirts, shorts, and yes, even trying on a swimsuit (dare we say a bikini) for spring break trips and the approaching summer vacations. The idea of trying on a swimsuit could be a joyous one, but for some the winter months may rob us of that anticipation of warm weather fun and leave us with thoughts of inches of snow and inches on our waist.

For many of us, weight gain is an acceptable, almost inevitable, part of the winter season. We are less active because of less daylight hours. Holiday demands interrupt our exercise schedule. We also increase our consumption of empty calories, starting with the postHalloween leftover candy and possibly ending with the Super Bowl party munchies. In between we eat and drink at Thanksgiving, Christmas parties, and New Years’ Eve celebrations. Unless we are extremely disciplined and dedicated to our diet during the winter months, it is not unusual to gain the average five pounds that most Americans experience as part of the holiday season. If you are in this not-so-exclusive group, don’t panic. There are still a few months before pool and beach season land on our doorstep.

If you are trying to get back into last year’s swimsuit, you can start by making realistic goals that are realistic for the timeframe you have for weight loss. With 10-12 weeks left before summer begins, you can make a goal of 1-2 pounds of weight loss per week, which is a healthy amount that will be easier to keep off than the pounds quickly lost by a crash diet. Be extremely cautious of taking in dead calories in your diet. Giving up sodas, sweets, and/or candy might be a helpful life-time habit, as well as a good habit to give up for Lent (which started on February 13). Concentrate on 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, smaller portions at each meal, and

Adding exercise to your week is an essential component to a weight loss program. As we age, our metabolism tends to slow down and we can lose overall muscle mass. This loss of muscle mass contributes to the slowing of our metabolism since muscle activity burns up to 95 % of our calories at rest. This relationship means it is imperative to maintain and, better yet, increase muscle strength through high intensity strength training for 2-3 sessions per week. A high intensity strength training program requires exercise to muscle exhaustion, especially exhaustion of larger muscle groups such as core muscles in your back and trunk, and quadriceps and hamstrings in the legs. This type of training can have several effective variations, depending on strength, age, and time to dedicate to exercise. One general rule to follow is to involve as many muscles as possible in each lift or activity and try to complete 12-15 repetitions in order to reach muscle exhaustion. The last few repetitions should be

difficult to complete, but not totally impossible. An example of a strengthening exercise that works several muscle groups is a full range of motion squat while holding a weighted barbell, finished with a full shoulder overhead press with the barbell.

A circuit training class combining 8-10 of these types of exercises can build strength, burn calories, and result in long-term improvements in weight, endurance, and function. Adding 2-3 days of cardiovascular exercise to a strength program will put you on the right track toward wearing whatever you want on your beach trip, but more importantly, toward a healthier lifestyle.

he business of critiquing a restaurant can be a tricky one. Sometimes, you love everything about the restaurant, but the décor needs work or the owner is rude or the food is bland, and that single problem ruins the entire experience. I have been there before, faced with having to choose my words carefully when writing my review. But this month, my review will flow effortlessly because there is absolutely nothing negative to say when you dine at The Crosby.

The Crosby is located inside the Village Inn Event Center just off Lewisville-Clemmons Road and is clearly marked on the outside. Once inside the restaurant, guests notice the brand new, beautiful décor of this recently renovated space. Since purchasing the property, Owner Dana Lu Bryson has diligently spent her time gutting and renovating the hotel from top to bottom to reflect her modern but elegant taste, with help from General Manager Lana Schlotfeldt, and Director of Sales Beth Gardner who acquires local artistic barn quilt paintings to adorn the walls. Get ready to have the opposite problem at The Crosby; lucky for us, we got to try nearly everything. We started the night with appetizers: Crosby Ultimate Nachos, tender chicken with grilled peppers and melted cheese over crispy tri-color tortilla chips accompanied by homemade, authentic guacamole and every dip you could ever want; stuffed sliders in a variety of combinations that were so tender and flavorful just thinking about them makes my mouth water; shrimp ‘n’ grits that was warm, smooth and fresh; and shrimp tacos filled with panko breaded shrimp, cole slaw, guacamole and topped with a mini salad.

Needless to say, we were getting full. One of the necessary evils of the restaurant review business is stopping yourself

from eating entire dishes because there is so much to sample. It was an evil I was failing miserably to control that night.

Ignoring my increasingly full stomach, here came round two: Romeo’s fried chicken sandwich which you have to taste to believe because no words can describe how delicious this is…

I ate the whole thing; grilled rib eye steak you could cut with a fork, with caramelized vegetables that my somewhat picky friend went on and on about until I tried and loved as well; sweet potato puree that will make even the biggest sweet potato nemesis go back for more; two huge, and I mean huge, bowls of pasta primavera with chicken that I forced them to box up for me as soon as I stabbed my hand with the fork so I would stop eating it; and creamy salmon wraps that were light and delicious! Each and every dish was accompanied by a delicious wine, many of them

local such as the Westbend sauvignon blanc and Riesling, in addition to Foothills beer.

I wish I could tell you that was all, but suddenly, the four chefs were once again at our table with three “chocolate molten” cakes. This made-to-order finale features dark chocolate bread with a melted chocolate center that hits your sweet tooth perfectly when paired with vanilla ice cream. The bartender also let us try two of The Crosby’s signature cocktails: the Crosbytini and the Bling It. If you have never tried sweet tea vodka, you need to, and that is all I will say about that!

If all of this is not enough to get you in your car and over to The Crosby, then nothing will, except maybe the remarkably reasonable prices. Nothing is stopping you, but hurry up and go before there is a waiting list to get in; and when you get there, be sure to tell them Rosey sent you!

As times changed, the idea that only women were going to need to possess these skills seemed discriminatory and so these courses were soon dropped from the curriculum. Fortunately, there are still talented teachers willing to teach the fundamentals of sewing to those with a desire to learn.

lemmons is the type of community most people assume no longer exists. It’s the kind of place where kids can safely play in their yards, neighbors help one another and everyone seems to really enjoy life. For the past three years, area residents and visitors have found another way to enjoy the place they call home by celebrating all that Clemmons has to offer with an annual community day celebration.

“Clemmons Community Day began as a way to foster the sense of community within Clemmons with an annual event,” said Jody Peske, immediate past Chairperson of the Lewisville Clemmons Chamber. “I was Vice President of Community Service with the Lewisville Clemmons Chamber of Commerce in 2009 when Mayor Bost met with me to discuss what such an event would look like. The first ever Clemmons Community Day was May 1st, 2010, at the Forsyth County Broncos field on Stadium Drive and was very well received by the community. The first event featured area businesses showcasing their products and services. Area bands and schools participated on stage. Jump houses, an area car show, stilt walkers and characters such as Scooby Doo were enjoyed by all. I continue to co-chair the event with other chamber board members, Joanna Lyall, vice-chair, and Tim Miller, vice president of community service, as well as many other volunteers that make this event possible each year.”

This year marks the alignment with the Jerry Long Family YMCA as a Platinum Sponsor. “The YMCA is a central part of the entire Clemmons community and thus an incredible venue to showcase a healthy community with healthy kids and healthy businesses,” said Peske. Each year the Jerry Long Family YMCA hosts Healthy Kids Day and the YMCA and Chamber leadership decided both parties would benefit from combining the two great events. The YMCA provides an excellent opportunity for our businesses and local organizations to reach the entire family. Julie Peache, Healthy Kids Day Director, said this was an opportunity for the Healthy Kids Day to reach new audiences as well. “At the YMCA, we know that when the school year ends, many kids lose exposure to activities that keep

them moving and learning. With summer just around the corner, events like Healthy Kids Day and Clemmons Community Day help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to stay physically and intellectually active in the summer.

“Attendees can expect to visit business booths, participate in healthy exercise demonstrations and get information on how to have healthy lifestyles,” said Lyall. “Kids can participate in the fun run scheduled for 11:45 am in addition to bounce houses, rock climbing walls and a slide. Music will be provided throughout the day. Big Bang Boom, the popular children’s band, is scheduled to perform.

Healthy food items will be available for purchase as well. The event is free to the public, and we will welcome canned food item donations for the Clemmons Food Pantry.”

American Idol Syndrome I love watching American Idol. My favorite part is in the beginning of the season. That’s when someone with no vocal ability whatsoever says, “Well, my daddy says I sing like an angel so that MUST mean I have talent!” Meanwhile, any creature with ears can tell you this person is not destined to be a star. Call me sick, but I find their shock and dismay humorous. I often wonder, “How did this person get this far in life, yet somehow miss the fact that they lack the ability to sing?”

I think I have an explanation. I call it “AIS: American Idol Syndrome.” AIS affects people when they surround themselves with folks who ‘blow smoke’ and tell them they are better than they are.

They begin to believe they are destined for great things. Sadly, when reality sets in, it is a painful moment of clarity.

Kids are being told, “We are all winners!” Everyone gets a trophy.

Because adults in their early twenties can be paid at a lower rate, they are often tossed into the deep end of the employment pool too early. Their bosses “empower them” to tackle a project for which they have not yet developed the skill set required to succeed. Rather than take the time to train or mentor, those around them simply cover them with false compliments. They are left to figure out things on their own. Without accurate information, they assume they are doing great. They are shocked when a bounty of rewards fails to come their way.

Meanwhile, somewhere in reality, there is a college coach who is only interested in finding a player in the top 1% in the country to fill a spot on his team. There is a player who believes he can get his PGA tour card, but his average chipping distance from the pin is 10 feet. And there is a young man in corporate America who is being laughed at by his peers because of his lack of presenting skills. Can’t you just hear him saying, “But my boss said I was great!”? On American Idol, it’s funny…. In real life, not so much.

So how do you know if the feedback you are getting is honest? Use more than one source.

1-The numbers don’t lie.

Track your statistics over a 6-12 month period.

2-Between lessons, videotape your swing and work in the mirror to be SURE you are making the swing changes you desire.

3-Consult with an expert. Don’t be afraid to interview your potential golf pro, asking, “How many beginners have you taught, over the age of 50?” “Do you have any experience helping kids get college scholarships?” “Have you ever taught someone with disabilities?”

American Idol Syndrome does not exist on my lesson tee. I am completely honest because I believe that only specific feedback will help you refine your game. Whether you want to play social golf or turn pro, your goal deserves honesty. I challenge you to be honest, be accurate and be successful.

the girlfriend-chatter demands we jump in with our complaints, too. We walk away feeling empowered, never realizing we zapped power right out of our marriage.

How can a woman STOP husband bashing?

I

magine two women in a coffee shop.

You overhear snippets of their conversation that may go something like this, “Laundry is scattered everywhere,” “There’s always dirty dishes left in the sink,” or “I talk until I’m blue in the face, but I’m never heard.” Chances are, these women are practicing something called “husband bashing.” How many of us are guilty?

The men in our lives aren’t there because we were forced to marry them. In our culture, arranged marriages are long gone. We chose these men, yet we belittle them to our friends and, often, to their faces. Belittling and bashing our husbands may seem like a release at the time, but it never helps strengthen a marriage. Instead, it just tears it down.

Wives, we should be doing what we can to empower our husbands and uplift them in order to get the results we hope to achieve.

Men need to feel important and vital in order to make contributions.

Dr. Debbie Lanier shares some insight: Why is it that we so easily fall into the trap of bashing our husbands?

The reality is that women are verbal creatures. This comes as no surprise to anyone, especially our husbands. Females generally talk three times more than males.

It’s just what girls do!

When something goes right in our day, we talk about it. When something goes wrong, we talk about it. When something does anything, WE TALK ABOUT IT!!! You think that’s excessive? Put girlfriends together and watch the accelerator hit the floor! We view the million-mile-a-minute conversation as a therapy of sorts.

Because women so freely express their feelings, the conversation can spiral downward before we realize it happened.

One voiced frustration with a husband creates a climate for enlistment. And who doesn’t have a grievance to add to this conversation? No spouse does everything the way we think they should. Before long,

Girls, we totally underestimate the power of our words. Did you know our choice of words have the power of life and death?

That’s not my take on the situation; it’s God’s! (Proverbs 18:21) Our vocabulary forms our focus. When we accentuate the negative aspects of our husbands to others, we intensify our focus on the very things that bring frustration. From this position of mounting irritation, we eventually speak these annoyances to our husbands in a way that generates more tension and sabotages resolution.

Underneath the tough exterior, men continually combat the haunting question, “Do I measure up?” His greatest fear is that he is not enough for those who depend upon him. When we berate our husbands about their imperfections, it feeds their feelings of inadequacy in a manner that is far more damaging and destructive than we imagine.

The conversation doesn’t make him strive to do better. It chips away at the very core of the one we love. We must choose our words wisely!

What can a woman gain by empowering her husband, rather than tearing him down?

A woman has everything to gain by encouraging her husband! Throughout my years of counseling, I’ve learned the power of this truth. As difficult as it may seem at times, if we treat our spouse as if the changes we desire are already evident, almost inevitably the spouse begins to progress toward that reality. For real! They feel the respect and gratitude. Your love makes him want to be the man you believe him to be.

What steps should she make in her own life to change her perspective?

Perspective is everything! The way we view the world around us dictates our response. If we focus upon our husband’s imperfections, we inevitably feel the need to share it with our girlfriends. Again, this resolves nothing. It only exacerbates the problem.

If we make a decision to concentrate on the things our husbands do well, it’s amazing what transforms in us and in them. Before we know it, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the blessing of our men. I know what some of you are thinking right now. “But you don’t know my husband!” No, I don’t, but I do know that regardless of who he is, he’s got redeeming qualities. Many single women long for companionship. They would give their right arm to have what you and I have.

Why don’t you give it a try? Start jotting down a list of reasons you love your husband. Consider things he does that you take for granted. Perhaps you haven’t realized their significance because he handles them so you don’t have to. Share these positives with your spouse. It will feed the love in you both. Did you know it’s impossible for gratitude and anger to simultaneously occupy your heart? If you’re focused on the frustration, gratitude dissipates. If you concentrate on reasons for gratitude, anger disintegrates. Both can’t inhabit the same space at the same time.

A Word of Advice: All “Girlfriends” are Not True Girlfriends!

Perhaps you find yourself in the middle of these “husband bashing” conversations with friends.

Remind yourself that you don’t have to take the bait. In fact, you don’t have to stay in the conversation. It’s not a bad thing to speak up for your husband while others are belittling their men.

Perhaps, you can help them rethink their choice of conversation. Some women have participated for so long that they no longer give it a thought. You could help provide a healthy alternative.

I’m wise enough to know that some “girlfriends” won’t embrace such change. This doesn’t mean that you disassociate from them completely. It just means that you see the toxic nature of these conversations and refuse to remain. Walk away, reminding yourself that your marriage deserves better.

ith a strong faith in the Lord and a belief that she is fulfilling her ‘calling,’ both personally and professionally, Tandra Chandler, Hospice & Palliative CareCenter’s (HPCC) Clinical Care Coordinator, approaches each new day with hope in her heart, knowing that ‘God’s care will carry you, so you can carry others.’ It’s that belief that inspired Tandra to form a team, Hospice Angels, for the Hope Run, the annual fundraiser for Hospice & Palliative CareCenter.

Along Life’s Journey Tandra and her family, husband Thurmond Chandler, and sons Dedric, Shamon and Marquis Benton, have been carried many times by God throughout life’s journey, and one stop along the way brought Hospice into Tandra’s life, changing it forever.

“At the age of 7, my son, Marquis, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. One day I was sitting in the day room at the hospital,” recalled Tandra, “while my son was getting a chemo treatment and WXII News12 had a story on Hospice. I called to volunteer, hoping that there were children that I could work with, but at the time, Hospice didn’t have a pediatric team. After volunteering for several months, I worked as a CNA, and now I am the Clinical Care Coordinator.

The Lord placed me at Hospice for a reason.”

I have seen patients granted their last wish, including a woman who wanted to go to the beach one last time. Bedridden, with only a week to live, Hospice brought the beach to her at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Sand, pool with water, beach ball, sunglasses, bathing suits, music, food, family and friends – the patient had a ball, with lots of photos taken for her loved ones to cherish. She died three days later. Hospice helps patients to tell their story and give an ending to life that is full of love and care,” Tandra said.

Over the years, Tandra has been honored and recognized for her work in the community through her role at HPCC as well as volunteering through her church, Love and Faith Christian Fellowship in Greensboro, NC. But no praise can come close to the reward that Tandra sees with the patients and families that she works with at HPCC. “I believe in Hospice, not because I am employed here, but because it has ignited more passion in me and only strengthened my commitment to give back. A job is what we do for money; my work at Hospice is what I do for love. In my almost 20 years with HPCC, I have watched pain be replaced by comfort. People may forget what you have said, what you have done, but they never forget how you made them feel,” Tandra said. As Gina notes, “I follow the latest trends and always make sure to include Fair Trade products and items made in the USA. I also listen to my customers. A

Moving Experience

By Vonda Henderson Moving . . . to another city/state, or just across town. How many of us dread the packing and unpacking?? I’m guessing all hands are up. It’s an experience all right!

One of my earliest recollections of moving was when I was probably around seven. Most of our moves when I was growing up were of the do-it-yourself variety. You know – get boxes from the grocery store, round up two or three strong friends who didn’t think fast enough to say they weren’t available, rent a truck, and get moving (pardon the pun). Back to the move . . . I remember this one in particular because after my dad got the truck all loaded up, one of the tires was flat. I thought he would have to unload the truck again to change the tire and I felt bad for him.

The move that encompassed the worst of the worst was, unfortunately, one I experienced as an adult. This move was a corporate move which should have been, realistically, far easier since we didn’t have to pack anything, load or unload the truck. To begin the tale, they truly did pack everything . . . when we unpacked I even found the bottom tray for a package of ground beef. A memento from the grocery store left behind I guess.

When the truck arrived at our new home, we found that the driver had brought along his five year old child. We weren’t expecting to have a small child to watch out for as part of the unloading process. Who would?

the seal was broken on the lid rendering it useless. Several chairs had nicks in the legs, and one even fell off.

The crowning moment was when the guys put the bed-frame together and managed to swing it upwards, taking out the ceiling fixture in the process.

To say by then that I’d had enough would definitely be an understatement. After filling out many forms and submitting pictures of the damages, we did get some reimbursement from the moving company. Anyway, we never used them again.

Now, what does a professional, quality move look like? Three words: Todd’s Easy Moves. This is a local company that I have used for the third time now, and each experience has gone well: no problems, no worries. I’ve also recommended Todd’s to my friends, and those who have used Todd’s services have been equally pleased with the quality of their work.

When their coordinator, Karen, gives you the time the truck will be there to start the move, you better listen.

They will be pulling into your driveway on time and may be a few minutes early. For this latest move, Jessie, Grant, and Austin introduced themselves and then got busy. My job was to answer questions and mostly stay out of the way and let them do theirs.

By lunch, they had finished the packing and had the truck loaded.

They were at the new home shortly after their lunch break. They told me that they were going off the clock for lunch and when they’d be there to start the unloading. Again, they were there when they said they’d be.

The entire move was smooth and wellmanaged. Todd’s teams are polite and maintain their professionalism throughout the entire moving experience.

The freezer (one of those large chest freezers) came off with a crushed lid.

We never did find out how that happened, but

VO I C E A Story About New Beginnings – Part 2

ast month you were introduced to Julia Osterberg and learned that in less than one year Julia relocated to a neighborhood near the Forsyth/Davidson County line, married a pastor, began to blend two families with a total of five children, ranging in age from 7 years old to 12 years old, and is helping her husband start a new church just off Peters Creek Parkway.

Considering the Children Before her husband proposed to Julia, he went to her parents and asked for their blessing. He also talked to his oldest daughter, telling her what he was considering. After getting the blessing of Julia’s parents and a green light from his oldest daughter, he proposed.

Marriage was so much more than considering just what Julia wanted. Marriage meant bringing a person into her two daughters’ lives and a new home.

She asked the question, “Would this person be a good step-parent and role model for my daughters?”

The answer was “yes” and Julia and Scott were married July 21, 2012, in their new home surrounded by family and a few friends. While most wedding days are filled with flowers, decorations, caterers and all the trimmings, their wedding day focused on their commitment to one another and the blending of two families. Their wedding day was simple and meaningful, and Julia told me that it was fun for them, as well as for the entire family!

Giving the Children Space Family life began and Julia decided the most important thing for her to do was to “step back” and let her new step-children come to her. She didn’t want to be pushy or invade their space; she simply wanted them to know that when they needed her, she would be there. She said she knew it would be easy to make mistakes if she was overly eager and she knew it was important to allow them time to adjust.

Julia told me she “could go on for days” about all the blessings of having five children in her home. “The

children teach me in so many ways,” she says. “Each one of them is so different and each one brings a unique joy into the home.”

I have had the opportunity to be around these five children and they are among the best behaved, respectful and joyful children I have ever met. I asked Julia, “What is the secret?”

Listening to the Children Julia said the secret is spending time with each of the kids individually so they each know they are important. Both parents visit with each child, separately, in his or her room for at least a few minutes before bedtime each night. By staggering the kids’ bed times, they can accomplish this goal. During this time, they talk, read, play a game or do whatever the child chooses during his or her special time. Julia said, “Every night doesn’t go perfectly, but perfection is not the goal.

The goal is to let each of the children know they are loved for who they are individually, even in the midst of a large family.”

A New Story for Children Julia is the director of KidStory, the new children’s ministry at New Story Church. She said, “I love children so much and think kids should have a great time when they come to church.” New Story Church is a brand new church located at 1401 Trademart Blvd, just off Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem. New Story Church is very different from many churches. Julia suggested that people look at the website (www.newstorychurch.org) and see what New Story is about.

This chapter of Julia’s life sounds chaotic and, well, it really is, but she said, “I am enjoying every single minute of it. I just feel really blessed with a great husband, five wonderful children and a children’s ministry filled with beautiful children – life is good!”

M

y husband is an avid mountaineer. If we are in a hundred-mile radius of a mountain, he will find it and climb it. Fortunately for us, Forsyth County is a gateway to the Appalachian Mountains. One of our favorite things to do on a sunny Saturday is head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, hike, picnic and rejuvenate ourselves in the cool mountain air.

Many Triad residents might be surprised to find that Mabry Mill and Rocky Knob, popular destinations on the Blue Ridge Parkway, are just up HWY 52 near Fancy Gap, Virginia. March is a great time to set out on this very doable day trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visitors can watch as spring unfolds in Appalachia, baby buds hinting of warm weather and blossoms to come.

Keeping It All Together ...

Or at Least in the Car By Martie Emory This morning I trekked out early to get my oil changed. But in order to leave my car for service, I had to remove a hefty pile of papers from the front seat, not to mention my lunch tote (full of everything, except anything related to lunch), more than one calendar, a couple of magazines, reading glasses, phone and assorted receipts. No doubt you know it well: the traveling desk. If I pick up my son from school he doesn’t even glance into the front seat any more – he just heads for the back.

He knows better.

surely never made it to the calendar pages any way. So my daily to-do list seems to be chronicled on brightly colored squares, attached to larger pieces of paper, nestled nicely on the front seat.

Frightening enough is the fact that I may, at any given time, possess more than one calendar -- plus a smart phone -- and yes, I’ve tried to bond with the notepad app on my phone, I really have. However, I’m still partial to pen and paper.

Every shiny new calendar tends to wind up covered with sticky notes and, soon enough, it’s just too much trouble to open the darn thing to see what’s written down. What’s penned on the sticky note

Truth is, my thoughts are well-organized; I’m a writer, a very fine personal assistant and a mom whose record for not forgetting necessary school items and permission slips is practically pristine. But my collection of scribbled-on pieces of paper on any given day is fodder for argument otherwise. They say that the memory begins to fade in 50-ish women embarking on a new life stage. It’s true. I need my friendly reminders front and center, preferably in large print. Pin it to the dashboard and I’m on top of it! Write it neatly into an executive calendar … and it’s no more than a nice thought with no sense of urgency. Do we women secretly love the chaos and uncertainty of a frantic pile of lists and reminders? Are we so conditioned to be prepared for any situation that we feel more secure with all our notes and agendas on the seat beside us? Personally, I blame brain overload and jam-packed schedules that don’t leave us much time for sitting at a tidy desk pondering our next move.

So the journey of managing our daily lives continues -- one bright pink square at a time. What’s on my agenda for tomorrow? Let me rummage through the passenger side seat and I’ll get back to you.

Better yet, I’ve made a pledge to dig out one of my many stylish tote bags tonight and politely slip all those papers and everyday essentials inside.

Tomorrow I actually may be able to invite someone to ride in my car.

Local Firefighter Reaching Out to Women Cancer Survivors

Some

people go a lifetime without finding a cause they are passionate about. But for Chuck Goins, a fire engineer for the past 14 years with the Winston-Salem Fire Department, he found his passion rather innocently when he was invited to an event to help women battling cancer. “One day when I was at a gym in High Point, a guy noticed I was wearing a fire department t-shirt and he began telling me about this group of firefighters who have a pink fire truck, as well as a pink police car, and they drive the truck and car to visit women battling cancer. The program is called ‘Pink Heals’ and I thought it sounded like a neat event, so I went and from that moment on, I knew this was a group that I wanted to be involved with, both locally and nationally,” recalled Chuck. That was a few years ago and Chuck’s passion has only grown, leading him to found his own chapter of the group, Guardians of the Ribbon-Triad, NC, here in Winston-Salem, NC.

To start his own chapter, Chuck needed a fire truck and a police car.

Additionally, it is the group’s tradition to name the truck and car in honor of a woman battling cancer, but Chuck didn’t know anyone to name either one after. “We got a surplus fire truck and police car from the City of WinstonSalem. I wasn’t sure of a name, but on the bulletin board at my station, there was a note that said ‘Sofie is cancer free.’ I found out Sofie was a 5 year old who had cancer and was now cancer free. I contacted her family and asked if we could name the truck ‘Sofie’ and so that’s how the truck was named,” commented Chuck. But that left the pink police car yet to be named…

An Irish Feast

Wallace and Emily Eileen Carter Many North Carolinians can trace their Irish roots to the surge of Scot-Irish immigrants who settled in the foothills and Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1700s. These settlers had a huge influence on Appalachian culture, most notably bluegrass music. Whether you have Irish ancestry or not, Saint Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate with our Irish cousins and honor their impact in our state. You can try out one of these Irish recipes to commemorate the occasion.

Irish Soda Bread

Golden Irish Ham

Irish Potato & Chive Casserole

Irish Cabbage with Bacon

4 cups flour

Ham

2 Tbsp. sugar

1 cup of cider

8 potatoes, peeled and cubed

1 (12 ounce) package bacon

1 tsp. salt

2 carrots

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese

1/4 cup bacon drippings

1 tsp. baking soda

2 onions

1 (8 ounce) container sour cream

4 Tbsp. butter

Peppercorns

1/2 cup butter

1 small head cabbage, cored and finely chopped

1 cup raisins

1/2 cup of golden syrup/brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 ¾ cup buttermilk Directions 1. Preheat oven to 425F. Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.

2. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles a coarse meal. Add raisins.

3. Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture. Add egg and buttermilk to the well. Mix until dough is too stiff to stir.

4. Dust hands with flour and knead dough in the bowl until it’s a rough ball. Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a loaf (be careful to not overknead).

5. Transfer dough to a lightly greased cast-iron skillet or a baking sheet. Using a serrated knife, score (cut into) top of dough about an inch and a half deep in an "X" shape.

6. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until skewer comes out clean.

1 cup of cornflakes (optional) 4 teaspoon mustard Cloves Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Boil water and cider, peppercorns, carrots, onions for approximately 3 hours, but do not overcook. When cooked, remove skin.

2. Mix mustard and golden syrup (or brown sugar) and ground cornflakes (if desired). Coat ham with this mixture. Stick cloves into ham.

3. Bake in the oven for half an hour (more if needed) to crisp.

1/4 cup chopped fresh chives Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Place potatoes in a large pot of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain.

3. Combine hot potatoes, cream cheese, sour cream, butter, and salt together in a large bowl.

Mash potatoes until creamy.

4. Spoon potato mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish. Sprinkle with chives and paprika. Bake in preheated oven until bubbling, about 30 minutes.

Directions 1. Cook bacon in a deep skillet over medium heat until crisp, 5 to 7 minutes.

2. Remove bacon from skillet and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Reserve 1/4 cup drippings in skillet.

3. Cook and stir cabbage in hot bacon drippings over medium heat until cabbage wilts, 5 to 7 minutes.

4. Crumble bacon over cabbage.

Stir and simmer until bacon is warmed, 2 to 3 minutes.

Season with black pepper and salt to taste.

Three words that have defined Antoine Hood as a professional basketball player and his journey throughout life. Welcome to the back yard of a man who knows what it means to fight for his life and the dream placed in his heart.

Graduating from the Air Force Academy in 2006 after leading his basketball team to several victories, and being named one of the Academy’s Fifteen Greatest Players of all Time, bigger things were destined to take place. The journey began for this man of valor when he was first introduced to basketball at nine years old. Playing at the local youth centers and junior leagues, a foundation was laid for his future. As he continued to develop his love and passion for the game, things took an interesting turn when he woke up with a large mass on the side of his ear at age thirteen.

Although no initial pain or discomfort was present, Hood’s parents took him to the Children’s Hospital where a biopsy determined that he had lymphoma. Time seemed to stand still as he received news that he would undergo chemotherapy, spinal taps, medication and a series of CT scans. As an adolescent with a yearning to just be normal again, something new was born through the battle he faced: hope.

The days of playing outside and attending school activities were put on hold as he spent his time receiving treatment at the hospital.

The choice that made the difference between life and death for Hood was his decision to speak scriptures from the Bible daily. Hearing words of encouragement in the passages enabled him to keep a smile on his face and receive the gift of faith that carried him through. As a result of his

childlike faith that allowed him to believe that he would be healed, he received this miracle from the hand of God after eight months of continuous treatment.

Entering the world of high school with his gift of faith, Hood wanted to show the skills he had mastered through the years on the court. Although he had great intentions and a strong will, he spent his days as a professional bench warmer until his senior year, when he started every game. Triumphs soon followed as he maximized the opportunity on a team that ranked Top Ten in the state, as well as an individual player rank of 72. Upon graduating high school, he decided to challenge himself and attend one of the top schools in the country: the Air Force Academy.

During his tenure at the Academy, their basketball team won the most games since 1950 and continued to boast a winning season his sophomore, junior, and senior year. These winnings brought them to the NCAA tournament and allowed Hood to set a record of receiving the Bob Spear award twice, an award given to basketball players who have demonstrated excellence in athletics, academics and military performance.

Life continued to show silver linings toward his aspirations to play professional ball when he received an invitation for training camp for the Denver Nuggets.

Upon being offered a contract after playing the entire pre-season with them, duty called for the completion his service commitment with the Air Force. The devastation and disappointment shook him to his core as he contemplated where this would lead him. Realizing the difficulty of fulfilling his obligation and his dream did not stop Hood from training on and off the court. He developed a daily routine of getting up at 4:00 am to run through a gauntlet of drills in the gym, and he managed to keep hope alive in anticipation of a future opportunity. As each day came and went, the expectation for a chance to play intensified. Knowing that he had to serve his country and somehow keep his dream alive, he purposed it in his heart to remain faithful and pray for his next big break.

The long awaited break arrived for the second time, but with strings attached.

He was given an opportunity to play in the Development League for the Colorado 14r’s; however other clauses in his Air Force commitment contract withheld the chance for him to receive the call-up to the NBA that he desperately longed for.

Sealing the deal to become an official Reservist, there was a light at the end of the tunnel when he was invited to work out with the Miami Heat. After impressing coaches and receiving outstanding player ratings, the opportunity ended as quickly as it came when the team decided to go a different direction. Although all hope seemed dashed in that moment, Hood battled the odds around him that said he should “just give up.” It was clear to him in these moments that there had to

After spending years without hearing from any teams, fate led him down a different path where he could further develop off the court: marriage. After deciding to settle down, start a family, and enter the corporate world, Hood was given a second wind to play overseas for the Czech Republic, in addition to a team in Venezuela. Upon completing the season overseas and realizing that the chance to play stateside was slim to none, he decided to return to his family and the familiar silence of receiving no team interest. Little did Hood know that he would be presented with an exclusive opportunity to share his extraordinary story with the world. Long time friend and independent film graduate from NYU, Ryan Johnson, expressed a sincere interest in filming a documentary that would depict Hood’s journey of chasing his dream. Considering Hood’s unique experience and the longevity of the revolving door that never seemed to close, it was agreed that the world

needed to know that “Dreams Don’t Die.” This amazing documentary would share the innermost details of a man who experienced the grit and grind of the road less traveled for a passion beating in his heart. The details of this documentary continue to build, as emotions intensified when Hood received a call last December from the coach of the San Antonio Spurs offering a contract. A celebration was heard, a victory was charted and a breath of fresh air was breathed in. The trek to reach this point was achieved, but it was also short-lived. Hood was released due to a complete roster and once again on the road of hope against hope.

Ready to prove to the world that holding on to dreams creates new possibilities, Hood awaits for the completion of his story that will reveal that no one’s journey is over until they give up.

Salem College Director of Student Professional Development Esther Gonzalez-Freeman and Salem College Director of Student Activities Brooke Barber were both recently awarded American College Personnel Association’s (ACPA) Freshmaker Awards for their work on the new Salem Firsts program. The Salem Firsts program is a joint program between the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Student Professional Development designed to connect first generation students and their families with the information and resources needed to successfully transition into collegiate life at Salem.

The Freshmaker Award honors college professionals for fresh or new perspectives, high levels of participation and contribution to the field. Both women were also selected as "Best of North Carolina College Personnel Association (NCCPA) 2012" for their presentation on first-generation students at the 2012 state convention in October.

Brooke Barber Esther Gonzalez-Freeman Originally from New Jersey, Gonzalez-Freeman is a first-generation college graduate with a BA in political science from The College of New Jersey and an MS in leadership and business ethics from Duquesne University (PA). She has worked in the field of education, focusing on higher education equity and access, for the last 11 years. Before coming to Salem, she held positions at several institutions, including Lehigh University (PA), where she served as the Director of Diversity Recruitment.

A Charlotte native, Barber is a 2002 graduate of Salem College with a degree in communication. Before returning to Salem in 2008 as Director of Student Activities, her professional experiences included event planning and mentoring high school youth in Huntington Beach, CA, and Charlotte.

Barber is an active member of the National Orientation Director Association and the American College Personnel Association. She is currently pursuing a Master of education degree in student personnel administration in higher education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The American Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) announced today that it has selected Sally Anne Irvin of Winston-Salem, NC, to serve as the new Public Member for the Board of Directors.

“The public member serves an invaluable role on the Board as the voice of the general consumer,” Dottie Roberts, MSN, MACI, RN, CMSRN, OCNS-C, ABSNC President, said. “Sally brings unique experience and insight to this position and we are excited to add her knowledge to the ABSNC leadership.”

The Public Member champions the perspective of the healthcare consumer in decisions made by the ABSNC Board of Directors. Specialty nursing certification serves the general public, the nursing profession and the specialty. Public input broadens the perspective of certifying organizations and helps focus attention on consumer concerns as they relate to quality, cost effectiveness and access to care.

The individual filling this position must have the ability to communicate and listen effectively, view specialty nursing certification as a means to protect the public and generally be interested in healthcare as it relates to the protection of the public. ABSNC also requires that the public member is not a registered nurse (RN) or involved in healthcare in any way to ensure that there is no conflict of interest.

“Sally brings her many strengths to the table, not the least of which is a passion for advocacy and making a difference,” Shelly Cannon, BSN, RN, CPAN, Chair of the ABNS Nominations and Elections Committee, said. “She is a consumer in the healthcare/hospital systems and has a special place in her heart for nurses, and she would like for all nurses to earn certification.”

Irvin currently serves as the Associate Director for Faculty and Technology Services and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Wake Forest University School of Law where she was previously Associate Director of Educational Technology, among a variety of other positions. Irvin has received distinguished degrees in the fields of law, education and library science, including a Juris Doctor (JD) from the Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, FL, a Master’s of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida, a Master’s of Educational Technology from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Stetson University.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to work with a group of dedicated individuals and organizations looking to protect the public and advance the nursing profession with professional certification,” Irvin said.

She has been involved in numerous professional and community-based organizations, including WomenHeart and the American Heart Association.

Irvin will begin her term on July 1, 2013, and she will serve a three-year term.

community made both monetary and in-kind donations of advertising space, magazine articles, graphic design, posters, signs, facilities, raffle prizes, food and beverage.

Many others purchased engraved bricks honoring their pets and close friends to be placed at the park entrance. These bricks helped make a difference in realizing our fundraising goal. Still others sent checks to the Forsyth Humane Society, The WinstonSalem Foundation and the Dog Park at Tanglewood. For all practical purposes, the work of the Dog Park at Tanglewood Committee is done. We have our funds.

hat began as an idea in 2009 is finally coming to fruition. During the last several weeks, dog owners and supporters of the Dog Park at Tanglewood have seen the park’s construction begin. The dog park will be open this spring.

Davie Construction Co., along with Allen Geomatics, Sparks Grading, Stanleyville Paving, Bodenheimer Plumbing, Salem Fence, Clemmons Concrete and T and T Farms will be installing storm water controls, grading the site for a ninety-space gravel parking lot, running a water line for the drinking fountains, installing the fencing and gates, pouring the concrete entrance, installing the water fountains and laying the brick pavers.

They are building a park design donated by Stimmel and Associates.

It’s coming!

It’s coming because our community said that they wanted a dog park and they wanted to see it built at Tanglewood Park. Members of our community volunteered many hours of their time, helped spread the word and donated money. They talked to their friends, neighbors, employers, government leaders, business owners, civic groups, foundations and whoever would listen to them. They told all of these people that the dog park would get built if they had their help. The Forsyth Humane Society and the Winston-Salem Foundation jumped on the bandwagon early and saw that building a dog park in southwest Forsyth County would not only be

a good place for dogs to exercise and socialize, but a place for people to gather as well.

The Village of Clemmons saw the dog park as an amenity that residents would find appealing. Vulcan Materials said that they would help. Over 1,000 dogs and their owners came out to Tanglewood Park to see the site where the dog park was to be built.

Four hundred dog owners paid to attend a fundraising event at WinMock last February and that same night Lowes Foods and Purina both made major donations to the effort.

One woman wrote a very large check to help with the park’s funding with the remark, “I can do it, so why not?” She later wrote another check.

The Dog Park Committee hopes the construction that started in late January will be completed by late April. On Sunday, May 5, the group is planning a Dog Park Dedication Party from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Admission to the new Dog Park will be free with a supply item (Purina Dog or Puppy Chow, Purina Cat or Kitten Chow, clumping Cat Litter, Bleach, or Paper Towels) to be donated to the Humane Societies of Forsyth and Davie Counties. Donor booths and a variety of food will be available. The goal of the party is two-fold: to thank the Dog Park sponsors and to help both the Forsyth and Davie Humane Societies supply their shelters.

When the park opens, we will have a place to take our dogs to run off-leash. Thank you Forsyth, Davie and Davidson County residents! You wanted a dog park, you raised the money to build the dog park and soon we will all enjoy the Dog Park at Tanglewood.

L

ocal musician Jon Montgomery has a lot of “Carolina” in him.

He says that is what keeps him “young, crazy, wild and free.”

As a college student, he is certainly not an old man, but he has done some living. He writes and sings about some of the same subjects and themes that the traditional country music legends have for decades – love, partying, cars and the south – but with his own young-at-heart style that is still to be tempered by life.

A self-taught guitarist and vocalist, Jon has been around music as long as he can remember. His uncle plays several stringed instruments and his aunt was a contemporary Christian artist, so music was a part of his family heritage.

At age fifteen, his mom gave him his first guitar and, like any self-respecting 21st century kid might do, he went online to learn chords. Soon he was playing along with songs on the airwaves and knew he had found his passion. He hopes to incorporate some formal training into his schedule at some point, which is already packed full with music, school work and swinging clubs on the Guilford College golf team.

Growing up in the small Piedmont town of Germanton, Jon’s music is supported by folks from this area. He often plays at a fun local venue called Second & Green Tavern in downtown Winston-Salem, where he is quickly gaining a following, as well as anywhere he has his guitar handy. A graduate of South Stokes High School, Jon currently attends Guilford College. While living in Greensboro, he has come under the influence of local musicians Chris Lane and Jody Lee Petty of Honeysuckle Ridge, a local

country/rock band that is rapidly moving into the big-time of Nashville. They are a talented, diverse group of musicians who have a sound that is all their own. Jon knows that he is not the same musician as his mentors, the Avett Brothers, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan or Florida Georgia Line, but he is coming into his own musical identity.

While Jon has stayed local and is going the route of higher education, his musical partner and inspiration has gone another path. Josh Noah, Jon’s high school buddy and best friend, is also his “other half,” musically speaking. Josh is currently serving our country as a member of the United States Navy, but every time he is home, he and Jon get together and work on their music. Recently they recorded a demo that Jon’s father is using to introduce him to local bars in the area. icole Smith’s self-described hardheaded nature may have saved her life. At 28, she was diagnosed with what most people that age think of an “old person’s disease,” she said – breast cancer. In January 2001, Smith and her husband began fertility treatments. In March, she found the lump. Her fertility specialist believed it to be related to her menstrual period and did not take Smith’s alarm seriously due to her young age. “At 28, no insurance company will approve a mammogram,” Smith said. “That was not a way to catch my cancer.” So Smith insisted on seeing a surgeon who immediately sensed her alarm. “That was April 15. On April 17, he called me, and I was told that I did in fact have cancer, and on April 27, I was in surgery. ” Smith’s treatment lasted until September 25 of that year, and she has since been in remission. Smith stressed that her doctor at Regional Cancer Center in Greensboro, NC, made her journey through treatment a better experience. “You have to be able to trust the people who are treating you and really feel like they care about you, not just as a patient, but as a person,” she said.

During her treatment, Smith only took one sick day from work. “I needed a place to go during the day so I could

pretend I was still normal” Smith said. Her mother provided a strong support system during the worst days of her chemo.

Smith’s husband picked up the slack around the household, taking care of chores and cooking. Smith also said her best friend was “awesome” throughout her treatment period. “She was a stay-at-home mom at the time. I would call her during the chemo and tell her I was craving a specific food, and she would pack her kid up in a car seat, no questions asked,” Smith said. Since being in remission, Smith has helped other women, mainly family friends and coworkers, through breast cancer as someone they could come to with any question. But Smith wants to do even more to help and reach as many people as possible. As a Face for the Northwest NC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, Smith hopes her story will reach and influence individuals throughout the region. “I think the message I bring – the age I was diagnosed – is important because people think it’s an old woman’s disease and it’s not,” Smith said. “I have a great story to get out there, and with Komen’s backing, the number of people I can reach is endless.”

Heather Matkowsky, a veteran of our Move It And Lose It first challenge, is a success story in getting by with a little help from her friends. “I never heard of the program until two of my friends saw the ad in Forsyth Woman and brought it to my attention. We’d always talked, or rather complained about things together - we want to have more energy, we want to lose weight, we want something different. When a couple of my friends went to Forsyth Woman’s Girls Nite Out and signed up for the Move It And Lose It Challenge, I wasn’t going to be left behind. I called the next day and signed up for the program. I have been through all three challenges and now as an assistant to April Hartsook, I have gone from dreading going to a work out by myself, to looking forward to group trainings.”

Heather’s success is not just body but also mind, “When you make the commitment to change, to want different and do different, it affects every aspect of your life. Sure your eating changes, and you start going to scheduled workouts, but you find that your attitude changes with it. You start to treat people in your life differently, friends and strangers. The best part to me is my circle of friends has widened with every challenge, we not only workout together but we support each other through email, text and phone calls.

This time, the woman in the department looked at me and asked what I was doing there. It didn’t register, so I told her I was looking for shorts. She told me I was in the WRONG department, that Women’s was downstairs! I knew then that I’d changed my life, and now as April’s assistant I am ready to give back.

Where does Heather see herself in 5 years? “I’m committed to this journey. I see myself on the path of running a marathon and becoming a Personal Trainer. I want to give back what April has given to me - the courage to start, the perseverance to continue, and the desire to never give up. There are so many people out there that sit in the place I was, I want to tell them, ‘Take that first step for yourself, because you are worth it.”

By Raven At the show, I could tell Sherman was feeling anxious because he was sweating profusely and being excessively bossy (nerves make humans snappish, I’ve noticed). After the warm-up, he went to use the facilities (nerves also make humans use the bathroom a lot, too) and put me in a stall to await his return. I was minding my own business when several riders from another team approached. I pricked up my ears when I heard Sherman’s name.

“Did you see that guy named Sherman warming up?” “I know – it’s a scream!” Well, I thought to myself, these are classless broads. But then they went over the line. “And the horse, too – he’s so slow!”

Jill from Salem College Dear Fans and Friends, Twice a year the barn where I reside has the local college “home show” for the Wake Forest University and Salem College dressage teams. It’s like a “home game” in that the other schools are the visiting teams. At last fall’s home show, the atmosphere was electric. The riders were smartly dressed in their show coats, pants and tall black riding boots, we horses were groomed to perfection and the flattery was flying fast and furious.

“Dilbert, I’ve never seen you so radiant, even your teeth…well, never mind about your teeth…”

The college horse shows are grouped into beginner levels for the most junior of riders and higher levels for the more advanced equestrians. The names of the home team’s horses are put into a hat and drawn out by the riders – you ride the horse whose name you draw. Mr. Cool, Tabby, Dodger and I are usually in a beginner group, which has several advantages: we have to exert minimal effort and can usually get away with whatever we want since the riders are mostly feeble rookies.

At last fall’s show, my first round was uneventful. The rider was a pleasant girl from a visiting school who gave me a peppermint afterward (a nice gesture, but I wasn’t the one scoring her performance – based on where she placed, she should have given the peppermint to the judge). However, for the afternoon round, I smiled broadly when I saw the rider heading toward me. The vast majority of college equestrians are female – there is a distinct shortage of male riders, and we can go many, many years with all-estrogen teams. But this year, a local freshman named Sherman had decided to saddle up. Now, Sherman was a nice enough fellow, but I figured he wasn’t long for the equestrian world.

Ultimately, though, we developed a rapport as we got to know each other (I think it’s called “male bonding” or some such twaddle).

The nerve! I whinnied for Marjorie, my field sparrow friend, and explained what I had overheard. Off she flew to put a plan in place with Tabby, Mr. Cool and Dodger. And not a moment too soon, as the announcer was calling the first rider in Sherman’s class.

That rider was one of the girls previously slandering Sherman, and she was aboard Mr. Cool. They looked quite smart as they approached the starting point and saluted the judge. Then, despite kicking, cropping, spurring, whining, pleading and so on, Mr. Cool did not budge an inch, and the rider was dismissed from the ring. Next was Tabby who, in accordance with the plan, made sure that every time she was supposed to walk, she trotted – and every time she was supposed to trot, she cantered. That rider finished the test a little stunned, whining bitterly about how she “never gets a good horse!”

After that, Dodger was up and, instead of trotting the required 20 meter circle and moving on, he simply continued circling, over and over again, until the doomed girl became so dizzy she fell off and had to be assisted from the arena.

Finally, it was Sherman’s turn. I gave him a little wink as he hopped in the saddle, and away we went. With a little help from me (well, a lot of help actually, but guys have to stick together), Sherman rode like a champ and finished to a Bieber-fever-worthy celebration from his female teammates. Of course, the spontaneity of that celebration spooked me into a gallop around the ring that almost unseated him, but we called it a victory lap, and all was put to rights when the blue ribbon was awarded.

Yes, the fall home show was quite a success, and all the horses at the barn wish the Wake Forest and Salem riders GOOD LUCK at the spring home show!

The Last Word caught up with Carol Roan, President of Winston-Salem Writers.

A professional stage presence since the age of 18, Carol developed methods for teaching communication with an audience. Author of four books and co-author of three anthologies, Carol teaches voice and stage presence in the local area.

1. What brought you to Winston-Salem and to Winston-Salem Writers?

“I moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to family in the area. I was researching the area and what drew me here was the growing writing community. Press 53, a local publisher, was building their titles, and we had several published writers teaching at local colleges. I became president of Winston-Salem Writers with a little arm twisting; you have to be nominated by the Board. I knew I was great at project management, but terrible as a president. Turns out that the role of President is just a series of managing projects.”

2. What advice would you give younger women?

“Start young. Writing is open to women more than it ever was. Be open to opportunities. I’d tell them to start early, think outside the box, don’t categorize yourself. And by all means, trust your creativity.”

3. What is your greatest obstacle in business as a woman?

“Women tend to get categorized in writing – very few are considered writers of serious literary fiction. If you take a look at the New York Times Best Seller list, you will see more male names than female names.

The good news is that I see the pendulum swinging the other way.

4. What sets you apart from other women?

“I think my belief in creativity.

Creativity is a part of the soul. When you block your creative process, you are blocking your soul. I’ve seen many people make their lives miserable by not letting themselves be creative or not believing in their own creativity.

5. Where do you see women in five years?

“I like to see continued growth of women in serious literary fiction. I’d also love to see the growth of southern writers. I’d really love for young women to see the history of their mothers and grandmothers, their sacrifices, and let that give them the energy to forge ahead. To let their voices be heard.”

6. If you could nominate one woman for President, who would it be?

“I thought long and hard about this one. I’d have to say Shirley Deane.

She’s local to Winston-Salem, 84 years old, and her memoir, An Unreasonable Woman, published by our local Press 53, is an amazing read.

Shirley is brave – she’s never backed down from a challenge. She wrote, ‘Who’s Who’s of Black South Africa’ during the Apartheid years. She’s intelligent, always questioning rather than accepting. And she’s generous.

Many things she’s done are on behalf of others. That’s what we need in leaders – a thinking person, creative, and brave.”

7. What do you see as your legacy?

“I’ve always seen myself as a teacher.

I love teaching. I hope I am that facilitator that opens paths for other people, paths that they thought were formerly closed to them.”

8. What is your guilty pleasure?

“Oh, my goodness, chocolate. You would not believe the amount of chocolate I receive on special occasions. But I’m good about limiting myself. There’s nothing better than looking in your cabinets and wondering which box of chocolate you’ll raid that day!”
