• – The premiere issue of LKN Magazine I’m so proud of my mom, Keela, for following her dream of launching a magazine in her new hometown of Lake Norman! Be sure to pick up a copy next time you are in the area—and you can always read it online at lkn-magazine.com. I was fifteen years old when the first issue of Forsyth Woman was published back in 2005. I wrote a column called “Teen Talk,” helped deliver magazines each month and always knew in my heart that eventually I’d take over this business that my mom loved so much. I’ve grown to love this community more than I even thought possible and it’s an honor to be a part of it through these magazines. Through these pages, our events, our podcast… I feel that lifelong, meaningful connections and friendships have been made. We love helping people tell their story and connecting our community. While I am passionate about it, it feels like more than passion. I believe it’s my calling - my purpose. Speaking of purpose, I have big news to share! I’m opening a CrossFit gym with my boyfriend, Gavin, and business partner, Scott. If you know me, you know I’ve been hooked on CrossFit for several years. My love for CrossFit runs deep. CrossFit is all about community and that’s one of the big reasons why I love it so much. Washington Park CrossFit is coming soon and we couldn’t be more excited. Being able to open a gym in a neighborhood I’ve quickly grown to love so much truly feels surreal! I’d love for you to come try it out for a week to see if it’s a good fit! You can learn more at washingtonparkcrossfit.com and by following us on Instagram, @washingtonparkcrossfit.

A LIFELONG FRIEND MOVES HOME About this time, also drawn to the pace of lake life, Keela’s lifelong friend Barbara Minor moved from Atlanta back near her hometown, settling in Denver. Keela and Barbara had gone to school together and spent the summers hanging out at Barbara’s aunt and uncle’s Mooresville A-Frame with friends, swimming in the lake, camping out, and learning to waterski. The two celebrated her return to the lake, picking up just where they left off, and Barbara was thrilled to join the team launching the magazine.
The story behind LKN Magazine is one of serendipity, lifelong friendship, family, and a horse-sized dog who wouldn’t hurt a fly that landed on his nose.

“In Lake Norman, I’ve found a vibrant, active community of friendly people. I’m excited to engage with this dynamic group of folks and the members of my Lake ‘neighborhood.’”Norman BROOKE EAGLE
The story starts with Keela Johnson who, like a lot of folks, looked forward to retiring at the lake. In 2020, she left the on-the-ground operation of a family of publications she’d founded in Winston-Salem in the capable hands of her daughter Brooke, and moved to the Butlake full time.anyonewho spends five minutes with Keela knows she’s not a woman Whileto sit still long.Brooketook
COLLABORATION IS KEY “I’m especially excited about the collaboration aspect,” Brooke said. “Our cover shoot is a perfect example of our vision. We’ve always been about positive encouragement. During our photo shoot, we had two incredible photographers working side-by-side, sharing equipment, and laughing. What could have felt like a competition turned into a collaboration – one that elevated the entire experience and turned it into a better-together “Ikind of moment.”agree,”saidKeela.
The four of them, Keela, Brooke, Barbara, and Kasey, teamed up to bring LKN Magazine to the Forsyth Family of publications. Meet the four, and you’ll discover their excitement for the possibilities of the magazine are limitless. LKN Magazine can be found in Harris Teeter & Food Lion stores from Statesville to north Charlotte as well as local restaurants, boutiques, gyms, salons and spas or online at Lkn-magazine.com. Meanwhile, next door to Keela, a family with New York plates pulled into the driveway to be greeted by the aforementioned horse-sized dog Carter, who happened to belong to Brooke. The family that got out of the car, Kasey Jamison and her writer husband Rocky Thompson (yours truly), along with two kids, met everyone at once. Kasey, eager to settle into Lake Norman life, made her the perfect serendipitous piece of the LKN Magazine puzzle.

“I have been to Utah twice and to Wyoming this year. Over the next few months, I have sessions coming up in Florida, South Carolina, and Montana. I love making people feel good about themselves! It’s amazing how a photo can make someone feel. I’ve made so many connections and friends through my business. There’s something about a photo that can bring people together, as friends or family. I have always believed in ‘a photograph is a pause button on life’ and ‘photography is the memory of our lives.’ I’m so fortunate to be trusted by my clients to share in their lives and be part of getting those moments of a lifetime recorded. I love what I do!” stated Megan. For more information on booking a session, email Megan Black
“I take all types of photos from couples, engagements, weddings, maternity, lifestyle, newborns, first birthdays, families, and any moment my clients want to capture. I also work with local businesses, many featured in Forsyth Woman, to help share their stories in the magazine. You name it and I’m here for you! Lately, my favorite types of photos are weddings. I also love clients who continue to call and have me follow their special times in life…whatever they may be,” Megan commented.
Although Megan Black Photography is located in the Triad area, she’s available to travel and will happily do so for shoots outside the area.
HELPING PEOPLE CAPTURE

Even with today’s technology and ways to capture a moment in time, nothing truly shares a memory like a photograph. It’s that thought that Megan Black of Megan Black Photography said inspired her choice in pursuing photography not only as a passion, but as a career.
LIFE’S MOMENTS
BY CAROLYN S PETERSON

Since Megan was a teenager, she’s had a camera in her hands and loved freezing a moment in time in a photograph, but she’s only pursued photography as her livelihood for the past five years. “I started my photography business in June 2017 after my daughter’s 1st birthday session with a local photographer was a bust. Thanks to teething and no time for a nap, we left the session with maybe one smile out of my daughter. So, the next morning I picked up a camera I had laying around the house and took her out and took her photos myself. After that was a success, I realized I wanted to do it more and more! After bribing my family and friends to let me take their photos, I finally got the courage to offer my services to the public. In October 2017, I had my first client and to this day, that client has booked me for all their big life events!” said Megan. In May 2021, with the support of her husband, Billy, Megan quit her full-time, 9-5 job and committed to her photography business. Now, the sky’s the limit in the photography she does!

So let us forget to remember the past. Yes, that’s what I said . . . forget to remember!
For comments or prayer, contact Dr. Lanier at PastorDebbie@HopeCommunityChurch.tv. Have you driven anywhere lately? How often did you use your rearview mirror? How much of your focus remained glued to the windshield? To be sure, your forward focus got you to the intended spot! It’s completely nonsensical to imagine reaching our destination while focused on that tiny mirror that reveals only what is behind us. Even small children understand this concept . . . to get where we’re going, we must focus forward. Yet how often do we fixate on what magnifies our past? Even if we don’t converse about those things behind us, we certainly internally rehearse them entirely too often. In fact, if truth be told, so much of the junk back there deeply impacts decisions right here. (You know it’s true!) What is it, back there? Perhaps it’s a wound that still bleeds when bumped. Maybe it’s poor choices with bitter outcomes that haunt your living. We all could dissect a myriad of situations and seasons we could have, should have handled differently. But folks . . . we will not get where we’re going by studying that rearview mirror. To fully live this gift called life, WE MUST SET OUR GAZE FORWARD! It is NOT the plan of God to wallow in the misery of regret. It is NOT the plan of God to remain fixated on past pain that only puts you deeper in a pit of defeat. The Apostle Paul knew a thing or two about regrets. He’s the guy who tried to murder Christians before he became one. This dude once hunted down believers in Jesus. Then he got hunted down for believing in Jesus. Talk about whiplash!
Determine daily to carry a short memory and a clear direction. Choose to fix your eyes and fasten your heart to the future God has dreamed for you! It’s the only way out of your regret. It’s the only way forward!
This man lived in deep regret for snuffing out beautiful lives that adored the LORD he came to adore. Can you imagine the memories that tormented this man of God each evening as he closed his eyes to rest? When the room went dark, his mind followed suit. No matter how much he had gotten right, in that moment it never felt like enough to overwhelm what he had gotten so wrong. The night grew outrageously loud in his head. (Can anyone relate?) But Paul finally made up his mind that all his energies, all his focus belonged to the race set before him. He determined to run with eyes forward toward Jesus and forget anything that lingered behind him. He realized that where God was taking him was so much bigger than where he had been.
Friend, WHERE GOD LONGS TO TAKE YOU IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN WHERE YOU’VE BEEN!
Stop rehearsing what’s behind you! The rehashing of that thing is a trap! When Jesus is the LORD of our living, the Omniscient One who knows all things decides to forget our past. It’s time for us to forget it, too.
Keeping It Real
EYES FORWARD BY DR. DEBBIE LANIER

Probiotics and Vitamin B are Found in Kombucha Kombucha may well be an acquired taste for some, but many find this fermented green tea drink to be delicious and, as a bonus, it is filled with probiotics and vitamins, including Vitamin B which can help to boost energy.
Golden Milk Golden milk’s popularity has increased recently due to the health benefits hype around Turmeric. The drink gets its name from the way the turmeric turns the milk a golden yellow color, as turmeric tends to do with anything. Caffeine free golden milk serves up a mix of spices that warm you up and comfort you. The ingredients can vary depending on taste, but generally include: a blend of turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, honey, maple syrup, and milk alternative. You can find recipes online or even pre-made mixes. Because of the turmeric, golden milk has anti-inflammatory properties which can benefit you in so many ways.
Who doesn’t love a smoothie in the morning? You add a kick of protein, some fruit, milk alternative, healthy fat, and leafy greens all blended up into one easy meal! The possibilities are endless when it comes to smoothies and there are recipes everywhere, but to be a true coffee swap, I believe a smoothie needs to have kick (like matcha…matcha is a type of green tea that is more nutrientdense than standard green tea), some protein, and a healthy dose of fruits and/ or vegetables. Get ready for a real energy boost!
Here are some of our favorites: Tea Has Added Benefits, In Addition to Less Caffeine
Smoothies
Lemon Water You can squeeze half a lemon into a glass of water for a quick but potent vitamin C boost to start your day. This virtually calorie-free drink provides a refreshing, caffeine-free energy boost you need to get going in the morning.
Alternatives to Coffee: other delicious drinks to help you start your day!
Black tea or green tea can be a great alternative to coffee. Although tea does contain caffeine, it does not have as much as coffee, and will still give you the boost you need to get going! The caffeine in green tea helps to improve mental acuity as well as increase metabolism. There are other health benefits associated with green tea including that it contains Catechins, a natural antioxidant. Chai tea, another delicious alternative is also known as Masala Chai. It is a blend of aromatic spices and herbs combined with black tea and milk. Its flavor combines delicious full bodied spices infused with milk to add to the creamy indulgence.
Best Milk Alternatives for Coffee:
If you are still enjoying your coffee but need more ideas for how to make it healthy and delicious, try these out! Dairy-free and enjoyable, see which ones are your favorites.
Almond Milk – If you’re looking for a milk alternative, then you can’t go wrong with almond milk!
Less anxiety – Coffee has caffeine which can sometimes be great but can also come with the side effect of nervousness, anxiety, and even panic attacks. Decreasing the amount of coffee we consume can promote a less “fight or flight” reaction within us, calming nervous system.our
Cashew Milk – This one mixes well with coffee. It can, however, be a bit more watery than other milk.
Coconut Milk – This milk is creamy and incorporates well into your coffee. It has the coconut flavor, so it’s great if that appeals to you.
BY KAREN COOPER
Healthy reasons to decrease caffeine intake:
Oat Milk – A barista favorite, this milk froths well and creates a creamier drink.
Better gut health – Coffee can irritate the gut, creating IBS-like symptoms. Many people rely on coffee to go to the bathroom but too much of it can create digestive upset.
There are still those die-hard coffee lovers who are not looking for a change, but now there are many other morning drink options for those who may be interested in trying something different! More and more people are setting aside their cup of joe for newer healthier coffee alternatives, some with less caffeine. If you’re looking to expand your morning horizons with something new and exciting, then a healthy coffee alternative might be just the thing for you!
Rice Milk – This mixes well into coffee but can also be a bit watery. It does provide a neutral base for adding syrups or sugar that nut coffees do not.
Balancing hormones (especially in women) – Caffeine can disrupt estrogen levels which can increase the negative effects of menopause, endometriosis, or PMS.
Soy Milk – A classic alternative milk, this one can cut the tanginess of coffee but beware…it can curdle once it hits the hot liquid. Warm this one up before adding it to your coffee.

In art school, I focused on oil paint as my preferred medium. Over the last few years, however, I have shifted to using acrylic paint. When I first became pregnant, my studio space did not have the best air flow to continue using oil paints. Acrylic paint became the more practical choice.
A monthly column that keeps its finger on the pulse of Forsyth’s artists and their inspiring stories!
What do you enjoy most about teaching? Do you have a favorite age student? I love when students are able to see their own progress and get excited about what they have accomplished. I truly believe anyone can grow and improve with practice. I want my students to feel safe enough to try new things. As far as an age group, I really don’t have a favorite. I love that being the art teacher allows me to get to know every student in school. It’s neat to walk down the hallway and know every student I see.
Theor a pretty landscape.inspirationformy abstract pieces varies more from nature or emotions. The painting may be a fun piece I have an idea for, or used as an outlet to process my emotions - both good and bad. Art can be so therapeutic. Even if the final product doesn’t look that great, sometimes the process of painting through my feelings is more important.
How do you carve out time to be creative? Because I work from home now, I have learned to balance working alongside my children. They still have afternoon naps which gives me a big chunk of time to work without interruption. I am homeschooling for preschool, and will work alongside them some days, too. I created a space for them in my studio, and they love working in ‘the art room’ with mom. What are you working that excites you right now?on
Right now I am working on several small series of landscapes from my travels. I love painting from nature and it has been so fun to relive these memories as I paint them. What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?
Abby Williams | Impressionist Painter
This month’s featured artist, Abby Williams, finds intrigue and expression across the different dimensions and color that only nature can provide. From flowers, landscapes and abstracts, Abby’s talent as an Impressionist Painter truly lies in her ability to see beyond what’s right in front of her and add beauty to the world in ways only she can see. How would describe youryouwork?
Color, texture, nature, and emotions. I am often taking photos of things that inspire me, and will use those photos as references for painting. Most of my pieces are inspired by something in nature - anything from an interesting looking rock to a beautiful flower
How have you evolved, personally, as an artist?
You can also check out her work this month locally at Every Corner Gallery.
Practice - and don’t wait around for motivation or inspiration to hit you. While you’re waiting, work on a still life, a scene from a photo, or recreate a masterpiece. I have a folder on my phone of “painting ideas.” I am always taking pictures of things that I think would be fun to paint. When I’m in a rut, I look through that folder and pick something.
If you are interested in learning more about Abby Williams you can follow her on Instagram @abbywilliamsart as well as find her work online at
I claim impressionism as my style. I work with acrylic paint and use a lot of color & texture in my pieces. The size of my work varies based on the subject - anywhere from 4x6 to 48x36. I prefer to do the majority of my work on canvas, but I will paint on paper occasionally. What your art most?influences
It took me about a year before I really felt comfortable with the shift from oil to acrylic. I spent a lot of time trying to make sure my style still translated with the change in medium. To keep my style as “oil-like” as possible, I use several layers of paint to make it feel thick. I also like to use a gloss varnish to finish off my pieces. I think the gloss adds a richness to the paint.

Audrey Hepburn once said “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” People have many reasons for planting gardens. A feeling of joy comes when seeds take root in the ground and start to grow. After a bit of time, produce, flowers, or whatever you planted, is ready for picking, eating, or sharing. For some, a garden is their summer grocery store for produce. For others, it is a hobby and way to share with others. But, for a community, a garden can not only be a source of food, but also a source for fellowship, connection, and Withinenrichment.thepast few decades, community gardens have started to appear in urban, suburban, or rural areas. A technical definition for the phrase is “a piece of land gardened or cultivated by a group of people individually or collectively.” Each gardener has a section of land in the overall garden that they adopt as their own. The gardener then chooses what to grow and is responsible for cultivating the seeds. In return, the produce is either used solely by the gardener or donated to community resources, such as food pantries and shelters for use. Civic groups, churches, nonprofits, neighborhoods, and other groups often get a section of land together to create the garden. No matter what your purpose is for using a community garden, participating in one gives you a connection to your community and an opportunity to share your love and knowledge of gardening with others. Through community gardens, gardeners are able to learn and work together. But, these are not all of the benefits this type of garden can provide. Research has shown that community gardens can give individuals an increase in access to fresh foods, increase in physical activity due to maintaining the garden, an increase in fruit and vegetable intake, and relieve stress and improve mental health. As for communities as a whole, these gardens improve food security, especially in food deserts. A food desert is an area that has limited access to healthy and affordable food. Usually food deserts are in low-income, urban areas where the nearest grocery store is more than a mile away. In addition, community gardens help clean up the environment, and beautify areas within communities.

As for Forsyth County, we have several community gardens. These gardens are spread throughout the county and are accessible to many people. Take a look at the list below to see which garden is near you.
Resources are available online and in-person at city buildings if you would like to start or participate in a community garden. When it comes to gardening, it can take a lot of work, but can be very much worth it. Seeing seeds take root and grow into something is an exciting experience. Add in working with members of your community and a chance to give back, and there is nothing better than being a part of a community garden.

Dr. Scott L. Tucker and Dr. Hampton A. Howell – and their team at Renewal Med Spa – have enthusiastically embraced Skintrinsiq™, a new Obagi device aimed at minimizing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discoloration. Here’s how it works: The integrated blue and red LED light treatment combines with the other excellent Obagi products already available, to give skin exactly what it needs – and exactly when and where it’s needed most. This unique, individualized treatment addresses multiple issues, rather than simply one particular element. Plus, there’s no down time, as the 30-minute customized treatment extracts built-up impurities, then rapidly infuses proven Obagi products that are absorbed directly into the skin. Think of the phrase “out with the bad, and in with the good” – you get the picture! The products then continue working even after the Skintrinsiq™ treatment.

After a few years, Erika decided to bring her blog to life with a personal styling business, Taylor Your Closet, with the philosophy to help women from all walks of life feel more confident every time they get dressed. It is a great time to teach online cooking classes if you have the passion and knowledge to do so. People are now willing more than ever before to learn from online curriculum. Organizing content, picking a culinary niche and marketing yourself well are all key components for teaching online courses.
Teaching via the Facebook Live platform is a great way to share your love and passion to teach others how to cook. If you want to conduct live cooking classes, then you may want to consider a platform such as Skype, Zoom, or Google Hangouts, or another platform with these same capabilities. Then you can charge people for the meeting link, and it can be a good way to interact with your attendees as you can answer their questions.
In addition, there are a host of platforms where anyone can lend their vocal talent to myriad commercials, audiobooks, e-learning content, or corporate presentations. I have gotten started with a minimal amount of investment and my ‘studio’ is in my closet surrounded by the auditory buffers of my dress shirts and some foam padding purchased online! A decent microphone and audio recording and editing software round out the setup to earn a little more each month with voiceover work.
ONLINE SURVEYS Market research is a huge industry. Completing online surveys for marketing organizations can be a great way to earn some extra cash, but one should be cautious about what websites are chosen to fill online surveys. There are legitimate market research companies out there, but also plenty who exist as scammers who do not mind ripping you off. Be sure to do your research before embarking on this pursuit. There are lots of websites who investigate the validity of these market research companies and can help you sort out the legitimate survey sites versus the scammers.
If you do not have the time to live stream a cooking class every day or week, but you have one day a week where you can pre-record a series of classes, then you can still do this - obviously, this would require more planning and a good budget. Then you can upload your classes to your website or another website like SkillShare (www.skillshare. com) where you can charge for your classes.
VOICEOVERS Shameless promotion here from “yours truly.” I have been fortunate to be chosen as a narrator on ACX (www.acx.com) which is Amazon’s audiobook production platform. AIRBNB There are so many types of accommodations that are available on Airbnb (www.airbnb.com). They range from tiny houses and trailers to widespread mansions. You could rent out your abode at various times during the year, perhaps when you vacate the premises for a much-deserved vacation yourself, or during a well-populated event in your town. There are countless individuals in High Point, for example, who sublet out their homes during the celebrated High Point Furniture Market each season! I personally have a friend who simply rents out a spare room and bathroom in his home and it has a separate entrance, meaning this arrangement becomes even less invasive to his privacy.
UPWORK Upwork (www.upwork.com) offers an ingenious platform to work and earn in a variety of ways. Users can search for temporary jobs that can be done remotely. Day Four: Biloxi After spending your first three days in the middle of Mississippi, it’s time to drive south to the Gulf Shore. Biloxi is a hotspot for gambling and even houses a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. There is no shortage of restaurants in Biloxi, especially when it comes to fresh oysters and seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. Across the street from the Hard Rock is the Hurricane Katrina Memorial to honor victims who lost their homes and lives in August 2005.
From Gulfport, visitors are able to take a convenient ferry ride to Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, built in the 1800s and surrounded by beautiful white sand on the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Pack a lunch and plenty of sunscreen, and don’t forget to check the National Park Service website ahead of your ferry ride for any facility closures or safety notices that could throw a wrench in your plans.
Day Six: Airboat Swamp Tour
Day Two: Explore Jackson Jackson is home to excellent museums such as the Mississippi Natural Science Museum and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Nearby is LeFleur’s Bluff State Park Mayes Lake along the Pearl River, which is an excellent location for a picnic and a day by the water to beat the summer heat. The park also sports an expansive playground and children’s museum to keep younger travelers occupied.
Day Three: Civil War History Learn more about Mississippi’s role in the Civil War. Less than an hour north of Jackson is Vicksburg National Military Park, where visitors can tour a Civil War battleground, memorials, and exhibits. Approximately 90 minutes west of Jackson, at Windsor Ruins, are picturesque stone columns that have remained standing over 100 years in the aftermath of a large plantation fire in 1890.
On your last full day in Mississippi, spend your day in the swamp by booking an airboat tour through Gulf Coast Gator Ranch. On Gulf Coast Gator Ranch tours, guests are guaranteed gator sightings and even have the opportunity to feed the gators if they dare. After your ride on a highspeed airboat through the swamp, take a walking tour around the ranch. To find out how to book a tour with Mississippi’s only airboat swamp tour operator, visit airboatswamptoursofmississippi.com.www.
After returning your rental car to the notso-crowded Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport, settle in and have a snack at one of the few terminal restaurants available. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal prior to your flight home, be sure to find a breakfast or lunch spot in Biloxi or Gulfport before reaching the airport, where your only choices will be Arby’s, Gulf Coast Grill and Taproom, or a newsstand (although there’s never a bad time for Arby’s curly fries).
Day Five: Ferry to Ship Island
Day Seven: Depart Gulfport-Biloxi
Day One: Fly into Gulfport Book a roundtrip flight to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) and head north to Jackson, Mississippi, as soon as the plane lands. Jackson is a great base for exploring all that inland Mississippi has to offer. After checking into your accommodations, relax over some southern cooking at Lou’s Full-Serv, where you can order crawfish fondue and bourbon cake to kick-start your week in the deep south.

Journaling Advantage #2: Writing daily can help log specific symptoms. Whether someone is suffering from anxiety, depression or another mental illness, writing can be extremely helpful. Oftentimes in therapy, one of the key exercises that doctors often recommend to patients is to write down their feelings and thoughts once a day. Not only is writing a great tool to help vent feelings you may be struggling with, it can also help by putting down what is happening in your daily life. If you can view your symptoms or triggers to a potential breakdown occurring, you can then use this to seek help—either from their therapist or close confidante.
How Journaling Can Boost Mental Health
Journaling Advantage #1: Journaling can help you clear out your mind. By putting down thoughts and worries on paper, you can at least try and let go of those stressors. Rather than letting these circle in your brain, journaling enables you the opportunity to put space between life’s dilemmas and take a clear view of what should be the next step.
Journaling Advantage #4: Writing can help you physically heal from trauma as well. According to the article, “Mental Health Benefits of Journaling,” a study on forty-nine adults in New Zealand found that cancer participants who wrote for 20 minutes about their feelings on upsetting events, healed faster after a biopsy than those who did not write. Specifically, women with breast cancer who wrote positively or expressively about their experience with the disease had fewer physical symptoms and fewer cancer-
BY ELISA COPPEDE
While journaling may sound like an activity only professional writers should take part in, everyone can reap the benefits of this activity. You should not be intimidated by this process, considering that you likely have already had to complete some type of journaling when you were younger. Perhaps it was writing down thoughts in a daily diary entry as a youth or completing a free writing activity while in high school - journaling is a process we often have already taken part in. What exactly is “journaling?” Is there a specific process to it? How often should you journal to experience the advantages? These are all questions you may have when it comes to beginning this routine. Journaling is the practice of writing within a notebook your thoughts and feelings surrounding your daily life. The entry can be a stream-of-conscious written entry, done right before bed, or it can be more organized, such as an early morning routine where you list concerns and worries to get them out of your mind. Either way, journaling can be extremely beneficial for a person’s mental health. In terms of how often you should journal to experience the gains, it is vital to be consistent. This can be through making it a daily routine, or weekly activity. Only if journaling is happening routinely can you experience how helpful this can be. Finally, how can writing down your feelings and thoughts be helpful to your mental health? Here are five of the top reasons why journaling is extremely valuable, and all should try and complete it!
Journaling Advantage #3: Journaling can also be a creative outlet. Writing things down can be a way to creatively express yourself. It also does not have to only be through words that you can journal. Often drawing pictures or doodles within your journal is an excellent way to let out feelings, worries and fears. Journaling is your own private place to discuss whatever you’re feeling, therefore using art as a method to do so is one way to try.

It’s no secret that the job market has changed significantly in recent years. Employers have struggled with a shortage of manpower to meet the demands, but in the middle of this, we’ve seen unprecedented measures to recruit. In an effort to address the employment challenges -- the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Shallow Ford Foundation and Forsyth Technical Community College’s Small Business Center, has created a unique series of events to connect employers with candidates who have a specific interest in specific industries.

“Each program day will feature a variety of panelists who are experts in their industry, but also who represent different facets of the industry,” explained Denise. “For instance – on Trade Day, our panelists represent everyone from commercial and residential construction, HVAC, plumbing, and even property management.
“Career Connections is for job seekers at any level – whether the soon-to-be or recent high school graduate, the mid-career job seeker looking for new opportunities, or a recent retiree who still wants to work – but wants to try something new! We are excited to welcome job seekers at any stage of their career!”
Denise Heidel, the Executive Director of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, shared, “Career Connections is meant to bring a strong educational component to the table. Instead, we wanted something more purposeful and strategic because we know that not all industries will attract the same audience.”

Denise continued, “We don’t want to waste anyone’s time. We know job seekers are looking for rewarding and purposeful careers. They want to feel valued and that what they are doing matters. This is a constant question we receive from our clients. We can’t begin to tell you how many cli-ents have asked us for durable fabrics to hold up to their families. Now we all know there is no such material, but we have something close. Sunbrella and Indoor-Outdoor fabrics have become a staple word in clients’ homes for interior furnishings, suitable for parents and pet lovers. You see many advertisements for these fabrics from retail stores

Recently, and fabric stores.wedelivered a sofa to a client who happens to be a veterinarian. One of her many large dogs proceeded to jump on the sofa with muddy paws immediately after we had delivered it to the home. Fortunately, the client had requested one of those fabrics. The red mud came clean with just a damp towel. Kids eating popsicles, candy, and pizza on sofas is normally a no-no. We still don’t recommend it, but if it does happen, when you have one of these fabrics, you can feel a little bit better that you will be able to clean it. We encourage clients if they have questions to test the sample fabrics. We took one fabric to sam-ple test with red wine and green juice. The fabric is called Crypton. The test products wiped off and rolled away completely. If it is liquid spilled on Crypton, it beads up and rolls off. Wiping the spills immediately is always a good thing.
We also offer a spray ultra-guard for other fabrics on sofas if a client prefers other fabrics such as velvets or chenilles. If you want to test one of our Sunbrella fabrics, we can order a sample for you to play with. We will be glad to order or make throws out of washable fabrics. There are endless possibilities. These are commercial grade fabrics often used in doctors’ offices and motels. These fabrics offer cleanability - not quite Superman yetbut we are getting there. God bless, June 2018, 2017, 2016, 2016, 2013

The space’s versatility has propelled Ivy into becoming the perfect addition to Hannah’s career and family.
The Triad’s Green Thumb for Photography & Videography
Hannah and Ryan spent weeks thinking through the foundation, structure, and paint colors of the greenhouse. Her vision has always been to keep it as functional and versatile as possible. She was adamant about wanting her photography clients to be able to stand anywhere in or around the space and it be a beautiful backdrop. She was willing to put in whatever work was necessary to make the space something her clients were sure to find one-of-a-kind.
If you already know Hannah, you know she’s always up to something creative. From working on her home remodel with her husband Ryan, creating matching embroidery outfits for her two children Maverick and Stella, or whipping up something unique in Adobe Photoshop for a client, it’s hard to catch her resting on her laurels. Her love for creativity started at a young age and has only strengthened over time. She is forever grateful for her extraordinarily talented builder and engineer husband, who helps bring all of her creative dreams to life in their renovated 1980s brick ranch home. One of Hannah’s favorite pastimes is creating something beautiful from something that’s on the verge of being given up on. The duo’s most recent project has been designing and building Ivy the Greenhouse, a country-chic she-shed and greenhouse built mostly from old windows. “The windows were too beautiful to throw away,” explains Hannah. “My husband called to ask if I wanted them, and without hesitation, I replied, ‘Absolutely!’”
With their own family entertainment in mind throughout the design and building of the greenhouse, Hannah and Ryan knew that the greenhouse also needed to function as a hangout space for them when it wasn’t being used for photography sessions. They started their first garden beside the greenhouse earlier this year, and have found it to be nothing short of an enriching experience. According to Hannah, “It’s been fantastic to watch our kids grow and learn from what we’ve created. We’re really just getting started.”

The number of American seniors is expected to reach 70 million by the year 2030, according to the U.S. Census. Even with good golden years’ planning, two-thirds of older adults will need some form of assistance to go about their daily lives (American Journal of Public Health). While some elderly individuals choose to downsize by moving into a smaller residence or a quasiindependent assisted living facility, many seniors prefer to remain in their current homes for as long as possible – a burgeoning movement called aging in place. There are some challenges, of course, as the need for assistance varies by person and activity, but with proper medical equipment, supplies, mobility devices, and assistive furniture, this growing segment of the American population is proving it is possible to modify their lifestyles and environments to spend their later years living comfortably and independently.
With knowledgeable associates to help customers decide the size and style that’s right for them (and over 25 lift chairs on site available for immediate rental or purchase), taking home the perfect chair is easy. Forsyth Medical Supply even files the warranty for the life of the chair and can provide delivery!
Power wheelchair and mobility scooter: Wheelchairs and scooters are necessary mobility accessories for millions of older adults. There are many things to consider when selecting a wheelchair or scooter: manual or electric, portability, controls (one or two handed, level of dexterity), size, weight capacity, height, seating, wheel durability, turn radius, etc. The associates at Forsyth Medical Supply can help seniors find the very best wheelchair or mobility scooter to get around comfortably and easily.
Forsyth Medical Supply – Caring for You is Our Specialty
For more than 50 years, Forsyth Medical Supply has been a trusted source for common and unique medical supplies and equipment of all kinds. They are accredited by the Better Business Bureau and have received the Readers’ Choice Award for 20 years in recognition of their unbeatable customer service. Forsyth Medical Supply is proud to serve clients throughout the Triad and surrounding areas. Whether renting or purchasing, customers receive guidance from a qualified, compassionate professional in the selection and use of highquality medical supplies, equipment, and assistive furniture. When used properly, medical aides can make seniors’ lives healthier, happier, and relatively stress-free.
The showroom is located at 3033 Trenwest Drive in Winston-Salem, and their store hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 336-768-5512, or visit them online at ForsythMedicalSupply.com.
BATHROOM/BEDROOM SAFETY AIDS Shower Chair: A loss of mobility in aging can make everyday activities like bathing difficult. The tub/shower is one of the most common places to fall in the home and, for those over 65, such falls have a high likelihood of resulting in injury, and even hospital stays. A shower chair diminishes the dangers of falling by adding much-needed stability, as well as a comfortable resting place while showering. Because seniors have different disabilities and ranges of mobility, no one chair is right for every individual. Forsyth Medical Supply team members are adept at helping seniors select the correct option for them.
5 Resources Seniors Can Leverage to Maintain Independence and Well-being: MOBILITY AIDS Lift Chair: Getting out of a chair without pain and added strife can be a real struggle. Forsyth Medical Supply believes individuals should not sacrifice comfort and ease of getting in and out of a recliner to enjoy relaxing (or sleeping) in their favorite chair.
Bed Rails: Adding rails to a home bed prevents falling out of bed and can also provide support when getting in and out of bed. Different sizes, styles and heights of bed rails are available. With so many options to choose from, it is important for seniors to determine the rail that provides them the utmost level of comfort and one that is compatible with the bed they have at home. Some bed rails can be adjusted for size, some come equipped with padded handle grips, and others come with an accessory pouch.
“Adapting the home for safety and ease of use can help people retain their independence longer.” (Languirand, How to Age in Place)
TOP 5 HOME MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR SENIORS TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY FOR LONGER BY DEBBIE LINVILLE
HEALTH IncontinenceAIDSSupplies: Seniors frequently suffer from incontinence as part of normal aging. In fact, 1 in 3 older women and 1 in 12 older men experience incontinence problems that are not only inconvenient but can be life-altering, too. Having the right products provides peace of mind without the worry of accidents. Because there are so many choices for washable and disposable bed pads, top of the line absorbent disposable undergarments, adult diapers, disposable washcloths, etc., it can be challenging to know which products to purchase. Thankfully, seniors can rely on the well-trained staff at Forsyth Medical Supply to point them in the right direction to help their specific needs.

If customers want to make their own curtains what style would you suggest that is easy for beginners?
COVID has turned many into online shoppers, what tips do you have for consumers shopping fabric online?
For homes with an open floor plan how much (if any) should kitchen and living rooms drapes and fabric match/ coordinate? “Open floor plans can be a little trickier for the timid or first time decorator. Matching or coordinating solutions are both viable but the choice really revolves around other design decisions. The focal points of the spaces and how “open” the floor plan is both play significant roles in that decision, as well as size and location of windows and doors.”
“A simple panel solution is a forgiving structure that can build confidence in neophyte drape makers.”
“There isn’t one answer to this question. I’m more subtle in my preferences. Designers typically choose the focal point in the room and make choices that draw the eye to that piece or place.”
“We always advocate for the custom solution. However, there is a personal investment from a time perspective. If I were assuming a short term lease I might consider the pre-made solution.”
How has this DIY culture and reality TV changed your industry and customer base?
CUSTOM DRAPES: Hip or Hype?
50 | ForsythWoman.com
There are millions of prints and colors available - when designing a room, how do you mix and match to get a well decorated room without being over the top?
How much time and labor goes into making curtains?
“Simple curtains of a nominal size could be completed in an afternoon. More sophisticated designs and unstable fabrics require master level skills, great attention to detail, and much more time to complete.”
“The majority of our business is online. We always advocate for samples. It allows the customer to appreciate the fabric in their lighting conditions. Every customer is viewing the fabric on-line from different lighting sources, monitors, phones, or other devices, which brings about great discrepancy in their online experience. We always recommend a monitor that has been calibrated for color. but that is an unrealistic expectation for the average consumer. Our trade customers understand how the calibrated monitor can move their process along more quickly. Fabric weight and construction can give a hint to the hand of the fabric, but we always suggest the sample.”
“We appreciate the ambitions of our DIY clients. Some of those tutorials can be found on common sites like YouTube or TikTok. We always recommend a little more fabric and a lot more time for those new projects.”
You mentioned curtains are an investment - what is the most classic shape of curtains/drapes that never goes out of style?
“Ripple folds, tailored pleats, and inverted pleats can always be found in any design environment.”
Curtains were born out of necessity, providing separation from the outside world and protection from the elements. As architecture styles shifted and building materials advanced, curtains were no longer needed for protection but stayed a staple in the home. Curtains have evolved from cow hides to linen and eventually cotton, silk and lace. They are still useful for privacy and regulating sunlight- providing temperature control which translates to lower energy bills, but are best known in American homes as a decorative accessory. Custom curtains allow you to personalize your home, putting your unique style on display. Many people avoid custom curtains due to assumptions about cost because, as part of the social construct, they have long been a sign of wealth - a way to quickly assess one’s home and categorize the occupants into social classes. In some ways this still exists, as many higher end homes utilize custom curtains whose price can be prohibitive to the masses. However, Wendy Williams, President of Anatol’s Fabric Outlet, says “There’s a fabric solution for every budget.” With that in mind I asked Wendy to answer a few other questions for our readers. When should we invest in custom curtains and when (if ever) should we go the pre-made route?

You need rest Take everything you’ve heard about “grinding” and throw it out of the window. Grinding literally means to reduce something to small particles or powder by crushing it. Many don’t realize that’s exactly how they are living their lives in pursuit of their dreams. They are reducing their potential because they won’t rest, eat, or take a break! Right now, ask yourself, “Is this what I really want?” There’s a lot of data and personal testimonies to support how resting is essential for overall health (and success). Look some up for yourself. I’ve seen the difference when I incorporated rest in my mind and body, and I get more done now in business than I ever did when I had a “grinding” mindset.
You still battle with imposter syndrome I found out imposter syndrome never actually goes away. Blame it on being human but knowing we are not perfect will always keep the door open for us to fall into comparison. Being aware of this, however, is good so when a negative thought tries to knock on the door, we can choose not to answer. We can instead say, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalms 139:14), and carry on with the next part of our day. It’s a muscle to continue exercising but the more you do, the quieter that discouraging voice becomes. Your role models experience imposter syndrome just like you do and they keep going and so will you. The beautiful thing about being in your purpose is despite the turmoil, you will love what you do and choose it every single day. It costs the old version of you to step into what’s next so you can be the woman that makes things happen! It may be the biggest thing you ever invest in but take it in stride and believe everything that prunes you are those divine signs affirming you have what it takes. Let’s go boss, I have faith in you.

Solitude is the best form of love you could ever give to yourself and I highly suggest it. When I set out on my journey to entrepreneurial success, I didn’t know what I was looking for. As the first business pursuer amongst my friends and family, I didn’t have anyone I could call to keep me grounded and encouraged. Social media influencers, who were only showing the tip of their iceberg, were my only references and it caused me to feel inadequate. I didn’t know any better but I refuse to allow another woman to feel like she can’t do what’s in her heart. We don’t get these ideas and passions Tofor no reason.avoidrunning in circles, spending money on the wrong coach, and delaying purpose, I asked God to help me transform. I learned some things along the way: You will fail if you do it alone We’re combatting every entrepreneurial myth that keeps us from progressing. One myth is thinking you can do it alone. If nothing else, your customers are a part of your journey because you couldn’t make money without them. If you’re a solopreneur, customers are your first circle of support. Use that support to improve your craft and customer service. As you continue to grow, you’ll realize you have more demand than you have time to fulfill. Ask for help! You’re amazing but you aren’t supernatural and being able to keep up with demand results in growth and repeat customers. Build a team, get volunteer help from friends and spouses. If the demand is there, it is possible to fulfill it but the key to not losing your mind is bringing in God to be the CEO. Migraine disease impacts 40 million Americans—about 1 out of every 4 families. So, chances are, you probably have a friend, coworker, neighbor, or family member with migraine. Unfortunately, many sufferers of this invisible disease feel that, as another local patient put it,
Here’s how three Winston-Salem area patients described it to researchers last year: 1
• Moderate to severe throbbing, pounding, or pulsing head pain on one or both sides of the head
It will also help us train future headache doctors so that more patients can get the help they need.”
• “It’s debilitating...I’m sick feeling, I’m dizzy, I’m nauseated. I don’t want to be in the light. I can’t think straight. I can’t talk straight.”
Worldwide, migraine is the second leading cause of disability, affecting a billion people. More than 90% of people with migraine cannot function normally during an attack, which can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. Migraine affects three times more women than men, and is most prevalent in those between the ages of 25 and 55. Because migraine is an inherited neurological disease, it’s not uncommon for several members of a family to have it. The best-known symptom of migraine is headache, which includes:
The Miles for Migraine run-walk-relax event will kick off at 8:30 am on October 15th at Jamison Park, 285 Meadowlark Drive in Winston-Salem. We are working to decrease the disruption of migraine disease on patient lives—and we invite you to partner with us! There are four ways you can be involved:
1. Walk or run with us on October 15th. To register yourself, a group of friends, or your entire family (kids welcome!), simply use the QR code in the ad on the opposite page. (Or, go to nc.milesformigraine.org and click “Register.”)
• “I have to stop everything. I can’t work, can’t interact. I have to go to my room and just sit in the dark...and it can take 24-48 hours. And if it’s extreme, I have to go to the hospital and get a shot.”
2. Volunteer at the event. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, registration, nutrition, clean-up, as course monitors, or to cheer on those who are walking or running. Go to nc.milesformigraine.org and click “Volunteer.”
3. Donate to our team. Go to nc.milesformigraine.org and click “Donate Now” in the column on the right. 4. Participate virtually. Want to be part of the fun but can’t be with us on race day? MILES FOR MIGRAINE In 2022, 24 cities across the U.S. are hosting Miles for Migraine, a 5K run/2-mile walk/relax event to raise both awareness and funds to support research and migraine education. The only Miles for Migraine event in North Carolina this year will be in Winston-Salem on October 15th. On that day, runners, walkers, sideline supporters, and local business sponsors will come together to make a powerful local impact on migraine disease.
Dr. Rebecca Wells, founder and director of the Comprehensive Headache Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, said, “The money raised by the local Miles for Migraine event will directly benefit our mission to provide headache education, exceptional patient care, and cutting-edge headache research. We want to decrease the stigma around migraine, and this event helps us do just that.
What’s not as well known is that migraine is much more than “just a headache.” (In fact, there is even a hashtag: #NotJustaHeadache). While symptoms can vary from person to person, in addition to headache, migraine can include: • Nausea and/or vomiting • Sensitivity to light (photophobia) and/or sound (phonophobia)
• “The pain is so severe. I can’t work, can’t take care of my kids, can’t take carpool. I have to sit in a dark room and can’t do anything...I am losing a day of my life.”

FOR FANS OF FOOD! ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY LAUREN SEPHTON

Moving on to the house plates, we had their renowned Salmon & Risotto that was cooked off their wood burning grill to perfection. The salmon had a crispy, crunchy skin and a mouth-watering tenderness on the inside. It was plated on top of a creamy risotto that had little chunks of tender asparagus and maitake mushrooms mixed in. It was also garnished with a ginger-soy beurre blanc sauce that was slightly sweet, a little tangy, had a velvety richness and overall was oh, so flavorful. Hands down a favorite!
September 2022 | 57
Wrapped Venison that is calling all our meat lovers. The venison was rich, earthy, and tender. It was served with pickled jalapenos for a bit of spice, water chestnuts for a nutty and sweet component, and drizzled in a ponzu sauce for a complex tart-tangy flavor ending.
The other house plate we were delighted to taste was their Duck Gnocchi. The seared duck breast was rich, juicy, and full of flavor. And unlike the typical gamey taste, this duck tasted more like a strong beef! It was plated with homemade gnocchi tossed in a creamy sauce with roasted cherry tomatoes, duck mole, and fresh cotija cheese. In fact, the duck breast is local and comes from Lastly,Harmony Ridge Farms in Pfafftown.wewereservedanout-of-this-world dessert that made a lasting impression like none other! It was a smoked carrot cake that had caramel-y notes, warm embraces of cinnamon and nutmeg, while also being moist and never once baked in an oven! You heard that right. This carrot cake, like everything else on the menu, was made over a six-hundred-degree woodfire - hence the restaurant name. It was broken up into bite-sized crumbles that were toasted to be a little crisp around the edges and served with pistachios, salted caramel, candied ginger, and a house made ginger ice cream. Let’s just say, there was not a crumb left once we had our first bite.

Located in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem, you’ll find Six Hundred° - a restaurant that showcases locally sourced food, friendly staff, and a phenomenal atmosphere. They have dynamic small plates, extraordinary entrees, an extensive wine list, as well as a large patio overlooking Bailey Park that is perfect for Sunday brunch. Their chefdriven menu is creatively rooted in southern cooking and designed to leave you speechless as every single menu item is cooked over a wood fire burning hearth. Suffice it to say, Six Hundred° is an experience you don’t want to miss out on!
Our evening began with one of their most popular small plates, Coal Roasted Carrots. By cooking these gorgeous carrots among the coals of a smoldering fire, an unbeatable smoky sweetness was unlocked. They were also seasoned with ras el hanout for a woody-sweet flavor, then plated with a pistachio butter that added nutty and earthy notes. Lastly, they were lightly garnished with a pistou that is a basil-based sauce often served in the south of France for added freshness. The second appetizer we had the opportunity to taste was their Bacon
And while they are currently revamping their cocktail menu, there are two signature drinks that are here to stay! The first is their Placebo Effect mocktail that is a strawberry lemonade with ginger beer for a spicy kick, and the other is their 600° Spritz cocktail that is bright and cheery for a girls’ night out.

THE GIFT OF TERPENES What is a terpene and why is it such a great gift? By definition, terpene is a natural compound formula (C5H8)n and there are over 30,000 compounds of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Alpha-Pinene is one of those compounds and is the one from the pine tree (the name is a giveaway). It can also be found in rosemary, eucalyptus, and orange peels. Remember, that every time you peel an orange, the spritz that comes out is a healthy dose of terpenes released into the air. AlphaPinene has some very beneficial properties. It’s anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antiulcerogenic, can aid in memory retention and studies have cited its ability to halt cancerous cell growth. That’s pretty powerful stuff!
WALK YOUR TO BETTER HEALTHWAY You can see how a simple walk in the woods can be good for so many of our ailments! Of course, walking has some great health benefits on its own, and the fact that the forest is full of terpenes is an added bonus. Perhaps it’s why hiking seems to really lure people into the forest for Ifmiles and miles!youdon’thave time to make it out to the woods for a walk, kick off your shoes and take a walk through the grass with your bare feet. This is a great way to feel grounded, connect yourself to the earth and studies have shown that just this simple act can be a great way to relieve stress by clearing the mind, uplifting your mood and stabilizing your blood pressure. Barefoot walking stimulates the nervous system (which is an immune system!) and doing it boosts your immune system, while also improving your posture and foot mechanics which can relieve pain in your ankles, knees, and hips. When you’re at the beach, the sand and pebbles will stimulate the acupressure points on the foot. This can give the whole body a boost of energy and even boost the pressure point for eyesight. Whatever you do, just get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature!
Fall is just around the corner and our hot humid summers have almost come to an end. Getting out into the shade is great summer relief from the heat and it has some additional benefits you might not realize you are getting for free! When you are out walking under the trees, enjoying all of the stunning fall foliage, you are doing something the Japanese coined “Forest Bathing” in the ‘80s. In Japan the traditional name is Shinrin-Yoku, which means experiencing the forest through your five senses and connecting yourself to the natural world. Sadly, most of the American population spends almost eighty seven percent of their time indoors and an additional six percent in an enclosed vehicle. That math makes it seem as though most of us could take a little time to really get back to nature and it’s as simple as a walk in the woods.
While you are walking under the trees and taking a “Forest Bath,” you are getting the added benefit of the aerosols that many trees and plants emit, called terpenes. Conifer trees, like the good old southern pine we have no shortage of here in North Carolina, are trees that strongly emit terpenes. They can also be found in some herbs, spices and even fruits.
In oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, you will find the terpene D-Limonene. Its benefits include acid reduction which is great for acid reflux and heartburn. It’s an antioxidant and can help with any metabolic issues, aid in weight loss, as well as reduce Birchstress and inflammation.trees, mint, laurels, cinnamon and rosewood all emit Linalool. The benefits of Linalool include pain relief, a reduction in inflammation, anxiety reduction, and it is also an anti-epileptic. Linalool has a floral and sweet scent. A spicy terpene known as Beta-Caryophyllene can be found in black pepper, clove, basil rosemary, oregano, and cinnamon. This is another anti-inflammatory terpene that can reduce depression and anxiety, and has been shown to slow the growth of bacteria. Terpinolene can be found in cumin, nutmeg, apples, lilac and tea trees. It’s antibacterial, antifungal and can be a sedative.
Interestingly, the terpene Myrcene can cross the blood-brain barrier, and when mixed with other terpenes it can increase the effects of them. This is a more common terpene that can be found in hops (yes, the hops in your beer), cardamom, eucalyptus, lemongrass, mango, bay leaves, and wild thyme. Myrcene can be used as a sleep aid, it’s antiinflammatory, a pain reliever and anti-mutagenic.

REFRESH YOUR MEAL PLAN
• Style your mantel and other “display” areas with fall-related, decorative items
• Display fall magazines where they can be seen and appreciated
Darker and cooler mornings, followed by earlier dusks are a given. Instead of being annoyed by nature’s reset, ask yourself how you can go with its flow. I wake a tad bit later, read a little longer, and head out just before first light for my morning walk. Of course, this means that the feeding of the backyard birds is delayed, but their timing reset seems to be quite in sync with my own. You might also consider turning on a few lamps as dusk approaches – not just because it’s getting dark, but because it brings a warm ambiance to your home. Meeting a friend for a hot cup of coffee or tea is another welcome fall routine you can establish. A new routine might even be selecting a few new books to devour this season as you anticipate spending more time near the hearth.
One way that we honor the passage of time and the experiences we’ve had is to consciously recollect them. What did you do this summer that stays in your mind and in your heart? Focus on those highlights and remember how you felt and what made them great. You might even decide to post or display photos of “My Summer Highlights” online or within your home. This way, you can revisit them at any time.
• Springing for a few new kitchen towels in tones and designs that say, “it’s fall!”
• Clean and store summer bedding and replace with warmer items
• Using cloth napkins. Add some rich textures and darker hues to your table
RESET YOUR SPACE
Fall is synonymous with harvest. Get online or pull out your cookbooks and focus on seasonal vegetables, soups, stews, and casseroles. If you are a “big salad person,” you can incorporate seasonal produce there as well. You might even identify ten or so recipes that you will focus on this fall and stock up on non-perishables accordingly.
• Incorporating autumnal scents for your room diffusers, candles, and soaps
ANTICIPATE
For example, your porch or patio can host fall annuals as well as colorful pumpkins to reflect the colors of the season. Inside, even if you don’t have a white, beige, or gray color scheme (mine is red-based!) you can still honor the season with a few small changes. Consider:
• Including some real or faux branches in your vases
• Adding in some warm, cozy throws on your sofas
REFLECT ON YOUR SUMMER MEMORIESBEST
Now, take a step back and enjoy your fall life to the fullest…

ATTEND TO YOUR GARDEN Does the garden ever really die in these parts? I’m still unsure! In any case, get busy deadheading or leave it be so that the birds can have their pickings of berries and seeds. By all means, stash away that half-used bag of potting soil along with your tools and gear. Taking the time to clean and organize as you go will pay off come spring.
BY JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
I have always loved the passing of summer and eagerly embraced the promise of fall. I used to think that I was the exception, but a little research proved me wrong. It turns out that both spring and fall compete for the top spot in terms of seasonal preference. Because a beginning is always preceded by some type of ending, the natural progression from summer to fall is no different. It invites us to let go and to let in, a process we can approach with intention and a sense of grace by making ourselves a partner with the rhythm of nature.

Out TRU Taekwondo’s Newest Campus in Clemmons
NEW! CAMPUSCLEMMONS
TRU Taekwondo is passionate about serving the community and taking advantage of every opportunity to gather together and celebrate. Notorious for attracting large crowds at its special events and celebrations over the years, TRU welcomed over 900 individuals throughout the community to revel in the end of the school year at Tanglewood Park. Interacting with Triad locals through good food and fun is just one way in which TRU serves its surrounding community. To ensure that students around the Triad are exposed to the values important to TRU, the team often teaches gym classes at local schools and visits classrooms to talk to students about the importance of focus and the various character-building qualities involved with learning martial arts. TRU also hosts birthday parties at its facilities, allowing guests to get a taste of Taekwondo alongside pizza and cake. A common misconception about martial arts is that athleticism and aggression are key. While possessing innate physical capabilities as a Taekwondo student is important, the TRU team strives to help students excel interpersonally and athletically. By teaching vital lessons of working hard and treating others with respect, enrolling in Taekwondo classes not only helps students work up a great sweat, but also instills values in students and fosters personal growth. Taekwondo is also an excellent outlet for students with special needs to learn their bodies’ abilities and limits while sharpening social skills.
Grand Master Douglas is a highly accomplished student himself, who is trained under the highest ranking female martial artist in the world. While GM Douglas has won championships in Taekwondo and was undefeated for years, he realizes as an instructor that not everyone has the time, resources, physical ability, or natural talent to achieve such high rankings in the sport. This realization is why GM Douglas is the perfect fit for TRU Taekwondo’s program, which focuses on pouring into students and the community as opposed to solely winning championships.

At SSFC, we work with parents and educators to provide resources to help their children thrive.
The importance of early childhood education cannot be overstated. Early childhood education sets the foundation for a child’s future development, providing a strong base for lifelong learning, and also helps the child with cognitive and social development that is crucial to a strong future. As a community, we have to understand the importance of this crucial education to our children in our community.
Experiences a child has during the first 2,000 days—from birth to kindergarten—have been shown to have an impact throughout life. Therefore, SSFC invests time and money in local, evidence-based initiatives to improve early care and education, family support, health, and literacy as a holistic approach for children birth-to-five.
Smart Start takes the time needed to understand each person’s situation and then we are able to guide them through programs that cater to their specific needs such as the NC Pre-K program, Dual Subsidies, Emergency Childcare Scholarship’s, Teaching & Learning Services, R.O.O.T.S, and our free Diaper Bank.
In addition to providing funding for many childcare centers across the county, we also provide free community resources to families.
Parents and caregivers can visit our website to apply for scholarships, emergency scholarships, and subsidies at www.SmartStart-FC.org. Families with children that are five and under can also register for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which is a free literacy program that sends Spanish or English books to registered children every month based on their age. Our newest program is ROOTS and it is funded by the Kate B Reynolds charitable Trust. The ROOTS program is designed to help our community break the cycle of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and help local children develop strong roots with their families as well as within our community.
Early education is often overlooked and the early learning educators are frequently treated like babysitters at a daycare facility. But we need to treat them and their profession with the respect and admiration that they deserve in order to boost employee retention and overall satisfaction with the important career that they have chosen. These early childhood educators are creating and molding the future of our Herecommunity.atSmart
Start of Forsyth County (SSFC), we are a blend of a quasi government and non-profit organization that is devoted to early childhood education programs in Forsyth County. We provide free resources to local early childhood educators and education Smartcenters.Start was created in 1993 by Governor Jim Hunt as an innovative way to tackle an important problem: children were coming to school unprepared to learn. Today, Smart Start of Forsyth County provides funding for innovation, and also serves as an incubator of innovative ideas and practices that impact children, birth to five and their families.

Since the March 2021 opening of her South + Main Boutique storefront in Advance, Thim Phommavanh has been blessed beyond measure, given the chance to share her love for local style with a thankful entourage of loyal customers.
“There are really great days, and really hard days, but it’s important to be consistent, even on the difficult days! I don’t fake it, and my customers appreciate my honesty, and they know I care,” she says. “They care about what’s going on with me just as much as I care about them.”
Thim and her staff genuinely want customers to love what they are buying, and she’s sure those loyal customers know she is always going to be honest with them when it comes to discussing She’ssizing and quality.honestabout that, and honest about the ups and downs – and ultimate joy! –of being a boutique owner.
She also strives to personally interact with customers – and happily meet new ones –keeping up-to-date with any big life events they have coming up. She also loves getting acquainted with new markets, and sets up frequent pop up shops from Raleigh to Charlotte.
Developing a positive presence in the local small business community is a dream come true for Thim, and she’s very focused about transparency as a business person. As she has from the very beginning, she’s quick to tell you there aren’t any items in the boutique she wouldn’t wear herself, and how important it is to stay true to yourself, no matter what! “I pride myself on standing behind everything I bring into the store 100%. I don’t bring things in because they are on trend and will sell easily – if I bring them in it’s because I would personally wear that item or use that product.”
It’s a creative mix of women’s clothing lines that you’ll find at South + Main, always available in an array of sizes, from catchy, quotable tee shirts to romantic dresses, and there’s always the opportunity for personal styling. Just ask! “If a customer walks in and desperately needs a specific piece for an upcoming occasion, we pull what we think will work for them based on their body type, and what we think will look best,” says Thim. You’ll also leave with the perfect accessories to finish the look, often from other small businesses nearby.

“The small business community is unlike any other,” Thim explains. “Even at our pop ups I’m able to find more resources, and I love carrying products from local vendors in the boutique.” A die-hard believer in community over competition, Thim says she has built the boutique’s Tiktok platform around helping others who want to know more about the industry, and how to start one “Iof their own.knowIwas not the first to start a boutique, and I won’t be the last.,” she shares. “But if I can help start a business that will help someone build the life they’ve dreamed about, then I’m happy to do it.” She’s also learned some personal truths along the way, and enjoys sharing some words of wisdom for other business owners.
“Your journey is not someone else’s journey,” says Thim. “It’s easy to compare yourself to others in the same industry. For example: So-and-so has this many followers but I only have this amount. They are able to do this, but I can’t yet. You can’t compare your business to someone who has been in business longer because you aren’t at the same point in your journey. Social media followers do not define how successful you are!” She’s also learned that helping someone open their own dream boutique won’t take away from her success at South + Main, and that small business owners need to work together to build successful strategies. COMING SOON As fall edges closer and our closets need a refresh, South + Main Boutique offers the following fun events: September 24: Girl Tribe Pop Up at the Charlotte Convention Center , October 1: Forsyth Woman’s Tour De Boutique – where they will have Hope Anchored Designs Permanent Jewelry in the store from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., and October 15: A Patiently Rooted Pop Up in the store from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Schedule some “me time” (read: shopping time!) soon, to get to know yourself! By adopting these eight strategies for success in the workplace, you will increase your confidence and be on the right path to achieving your career goals.
72 | ForsythWoman.com
•
To be collaborative, you need to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with others on your team and across the organization. You can start by completing your own tasks in a timely and responsible manner as this will directly contribute to reaching group goals. In addition, you might assist others in the completion of their tasks to support the team. Last but not least, ask others for their feedback and ideas and really listen to them.
1. BE TRUSTWORTHY One of the most important things you can do to cultivate workplace success is to build trusting relationships with company leadership, colleagues, and teammates. Below are some important behaviors that build trust.
Showing positive energy is critical to your success in the workplace. You can do this by trying not to complain and display negativity. In addition, you should be professional and avoid gossiping and engaging in other similar behaviors.
• Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position Extend trust to others Put others’ interests before your own Keep your word • Be open and honest Share credit and recognition Encourage participation/feedback from others
•
Most of us desire to succeed in the workplace. Whether you’ve just landed your dream job or you’re looking to grow or advance in your current position, here are eight strategies that you can implement to take your career to the next level.
Celebrate your successes, analyze them, and learn how you can build on them in the future. Accept accountability for your failures or mistakes without letting them drag you down. Many of the world’s most successful people would not be where they are today if they did not accept their mistakes and learn from them.
3. DO YOUR JOB WELL To ensure you’re doing the best job you can, you need to make sure that you understand what is expected of you. If the expectations are not clear, ask questions to clarify and check in with your leader regularly on progress. Further, you should always be on the lookout for ways to increase your efficiency and productivity. And when you make a mistake or misstep, learn from it rather than repeating it.
•
8. SET AND ACHIEVE GOALS
A set of well-thought-out goals can serve as a roadmap to success, providing you with objectives to meet along the way as you work towards your long-term career goals. Make sure your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound).
2. INCREASE YOUR SELF-AWARENESS Self-awareness involves an understanding of your values, strengths, and weaknesses. If you aren’t self-aware, you won’t have a baseline to grow and enhance your performance. In addition, self-awareness helps you to manage your emotions in a healthy manner. Some methods of increasing your self-awareness include taking personality assessments; reflecting on what triggers negative and positive emotions; getting clear of your core values; and asking others for feedback.
Strategies for BY LESLIE SPEAS Workplace Success
4. SHOW INITIATIVE Showing initiative involves proactively making suggestions and going above and beyond expectations. To show initiative, you might volunteer to lead a project, offer suggestions for improvement, and/or actively participate in team meetings and interactions. Finally, when you go to your boss with a problem, share at least one idea for a solution. Even if your boss doesn’t take your suggestion, you will be seen as a problem-solver.
5. BE COLLABORATIVE
•
6. TAKE OWNERSHIP AND ACCOUNTABILITY
7. BE POSITIVE AND PROFESSIONAL

TWO FUN FACTS & A TIP
1. If Michael could have any other career – he would have wanted to be a stand up comedian or a musician.
2. Michael and his wife love to travel, but nothing beats the North Carolina coast for them, especially Ocean Isle.
A native of Clemmons and graduate of West Forsyth High School, Michael has deep roots in the community. “I love Clemmons. Other than a short stint working in Charlotte and my time at East Carolina University, Clemmons has been home. I think we have an incredible community, and I feel incredibly blessed to go to work every day to a job I love in a community that I have grown up with.” His love for community is also demonstrated through his servant leadership. Michael has been an active member of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors since 2018. He served as President BY DENISE HEIDEL MEET THE ADVISORS
Michael McGilvary shares two fun facts and his best financial tip:
A very wise saying goes like this: “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” It’s no secret that people significantly influence our lives, and for Michael McGilvary, this truth is demonstrated. For much of his childhood, Michael’s mother, Angela, worked for Marzano Capital Group so he was exposed to the industry at an early age. After meeting Jon Marzano, Michael developed a great interest in the world of investments. His circle of influence paved the way for his future career.
MICHAEL’S TIP: ‘Don’t sweat the latte.’ In other words, don’t sweat the small purchases, but plan for the large ones.
“Jon was a huge encouragement for me,” Michael shared.
“When I visited Mom at the office, I was very curious about investments, and he was incredibly patient with me –encouraging my interests. Over time, I determined I wanted to follow in the same footsteps. After college, I joined the industry in 2014, and two years later, I joined Marzano Capital Group.
“What I learned very quickly is that our business isn’t about numbers. It’s really about relationships and trust. I can input numbers all day long, but nothing gives me as much satisfaction as helping individuals and families. You could even argue that Marzano Capital Group is in the relationship business; investments are just the vehicle we use to get there.”
Today, Michael is a partner in the firm. His favorite kind of clients are the ones who reach out to him for financial advice and to learn about their options. “I have a great deal of satisfaction in helping my clients make smart financial decisions. I want them to be educated investors and serve as a resource for them!”
Securities offered through LPL Financial, Member FINRA/SIPC, Investment advice offered through Independent Advisor Alliance, a registered investment advisor, Independent Advisor Alliance and Marzano Capital Group are separate entities from LPL Financial.

I don’t “fix my face” with consults, injections, and treatments in an attempt to stave off the inevitable impact of time. I clean it, exfoliate, drink a lot of water, turn my eye into that of a curious observer and… accept the result.
I know it won’t last. Nature will decide otherwise, turning this glorious spring profusion of fanciful white into a plain and undifferentiated undulation of weeds. Or maybe the extra hand the lawn guy managed to hire will simply deem it “plain old weed” and mow it down. I get the dynamic, but still… I want to hold onto this unexpected beauty, nature’s orchestration of pure perfection, knowing that I can’t. The best I can do is to honor and cherish this moment, breathe in its glory, say “yes” to this fleeting perfection, and then, let it be. In all of this watching of nature “in the groove, doing its thing,” I am aware that it is a lot like the holding on of what’s left of my youthful self.
I want to hold onto this moment – the wild weed bush just beyond my fence blowing snowflake-like blossoms and offering just the right contrast to my mid-spring, purple-infused garden.
But this is no stoic resignation. There is no sense of defeat. Hell no! As organic nature and human aging do their thing, I • plant more flowers • wear the funky, cool earrings on a regular Tuesday • light the dinner candles on a ho-hum Wednesday • paint the toenails shrimp red I do these things because now I get, get, get what it means to parse out what I can control and what I can’t. I am getting old. Older. Depends on the day. A gift, a blessing; some say the curse of time. You choose. As for me, I’ll work with it. My inner knowing whispers: “Do what you need to do, my love, to accept the natural, organic process of change that accompanies the gift of time, but never, ever stop being you.” I listen. I • plant more flowers • wear the funky, cool earrings on a regular Tuesday • light the dinner candles on a ho-hum Wednesday • paint the toenails shrimp red And I walk back out onto my veranda. The snowflake-like blossoms are gone now. I smile in gratitude for their fleeting beauty, and my own ability to let go, then I turn on some music.

Having just celebrated its five-year anniversary in June, Baked Just SO has been serving its pastries, specialty cakes, airroasted coffee, and ice cream sandwiches to Winston-Salem, Lewisville, and Pfafftown locals since 2017. This woman-owned bakery is your best bet for custom-baked cakes and cupcakes for parties and events, as well as unique baked goods at breakfast time to get your day started.
The shop’s award-winning cinnamon buns have been satisfying sweet-toothed locals since the bakery opened its doors. Owner Stacey Milner also created the customer favorite, dairy-free latte called “The Stacey,” a lavender vanilla latte made with oat milk. Customers also rave about Baked Just SO’s croissants, which sport seasonal flavors such as fig and goat cheese with honey. This fall, be on the lookout for treats such as pumpkin muffins and pumpkin lattes made with housemade pumpkin syrup. Stacey has been working hard to make sure her baked goods are found around other local businesses in Winston-Salem, with Baked Just SO’s vegan goodies currently sold at La Luz. Moji Coffee serves up Baked Just SO’s croissants, cinnamon buns, cookies, and more, while Milner’s American Southern Restaurant on S. Stratford Rd offers customers Baked Just SO’s cakes, pies, and gluten-free brownies for dessert. In the future, she plans to focus on furthering her wholesale ventures as opposed to opening new storefronts. The tight knit team members at Baked Just SO are advocates for education. Having three children herself, Stacey is adamant about giving back to the school system and supporting teachers. She believes teachers work much harder than the public realizes, making them deserving of more recognition and respect than they currently receive. In fact, teachers are treated to a 10% discount year-round at Baked Just SO, and on Spirit Day, local schools receive 10% of Baked Just SO’s sales.
If you find that Baked Just SO’s coffee beverages brighten your day a bit more than commercial or chain coffee beverages, it’s not all in your head. Coffee served at Baked Just SO is air roasted Magic Bean coffee. While most coffee is drum roasted, air roasting involves the transfer of heat to coffee beans by using the steam of hot air for roasting the beans. This process creates lighter tasting coffee than traditional drum roasted coffee, making it perfect for flavored lattes or a cup of Joe to accompany a buttery croissant. To place a custom order or read more about the baked goods offered at Baked Just SO, visit the bakery’s website at www. bakedjustso.com. “Decorating my own home is a process and I try to make informed decisions that will be the best value for my money. After I have made a decorating plan, I shop local stores and online to get an idea of how much items cost. This helps me to not only plan my budget but also to know where the best prices are. I do the same for my clients.”

For the past 15 years, Ava Lewandowski’s monthly decorating column has been one of the most popular in Forsyth Woman. But Ava is looking to lessen her load a bit and, while ReDESIGNS by Ava – her business and her column – are still available, you may notice that Ava is doing a little less writing. You will still find her in our pages, though just on a quarterly basis – and you can always see back issues on our website, if you can’t remember how high to hang that new painting.
“Artwork that will be viewed while standing, like in a hallway, should be hung approximately 60” from the floor to the middle of the height of the picture. Artwork hung in a room where people will almost always be seated should be 56”to 57” from the middle of the height of the picture to the floor. Adjust accordingly but this is the average and should be comfortable for most people.”
Thank you, Ava, and we look forward to your continued input to Forsyth Woman!

Right up the street from Wise Man is one of the newer breweries in town, Radar Brewing. With easy parking and a large outdoor patio, Radar attracts a large afterwork crowd looking to wind down before dinner. They offer nightly food trucks and live music almost every Friday and Saturday night. While Radar currently does not make as many varieties as other breweries yet, it’s known for its Harmony Gose and rotating seasonal offerings.
2. WISE MAN BREWING There’s always something happening at Wise Man: trivia, music, music bingo, and more. Wise Man feels like the cornerstone of Industry Hill, bringing people together in this burgeoning neighborhood to share a drink and conversation. They are constantly rotating out and coming up with new varieties of beer, but perennial favorites include Mountain Calling, an American IPA, Body Electric, a double New England IPA, and Outraged Daughters, an Irish-style red ale (it’s harder to find but worth the effort when you do!). The frosé slushies are pretty great, too, for the non-beer drinkers in your group.
3. RADAR BREWING COMPANY
The local craft beer scene just keeps getting better in Winston-Salem. With so many options, here are 5 of our favorite places, where you’re guaranteed to have a good time and drink good beer. 4. INCENDIARY BREWING COMPANY Now with two locations, one in WinstonSalem and one in Lewisville, Incendiary is certainly on fire. Incendiary helped to jump start the area of Innovation Quarter known as the Coal Pit in 2018, and now it’s hard to find an empty seat on a sunny Saturday afternoon there. The Coal Pit attracts families because of its open layout and enclosed space, but the beer at Incendiary is still the star of the show. The selection rotates frequently, but we especially love their lagers, like Solemnity, a German-style Helles lager. Incendiary is also a big part of the local music scene, with concerts at both locations several days a week and larger concerts during the warmer months in the Coal Pit. If you’ve never been, put Incendiary at the top of your list to visit as soon as possible.
5. LESSER-KNOWN BEER CO. As the newest brewery in town, LesserKnown is already making a name for itself. Appropriately located near Old Salem on Broad Street, this brewery is focused on beer styles that are less widely known and appreciated. Be adventurous and try Lomax, a Bavarian-Inspired Schankbier, that is poured directly from a horizontal tank like you might see in Germany. The taproom is cozier than the standard brewery and feels closer to a café setting, perfect for a smaller gathering or tête-à-tête. With more limited hours currently, make sure you check their schedule before heading for a visit.
FISH BREWING CO. Located on Trade Street at the border of Industry Hill is Fiddlin’ Fish Brewing Co. This family owned and operated brewery quickly gained a fanbase for its laid back, outdoorsy vibe, cute pictures of dogs in its taproom on Instagram, and its beer (of course!). Favorite beers include That Fish Cray, a double New England IPA, and the Black Mountain Chocolate Stout, a beautiful match made in heaven. Fiddlin’ Fish loves community, so check out their run, bike, and book clubs that are open to all.

True Yourselfto
BY JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
People say: “Retirement should be all about you!” What they often have in mind is a stereotype of what the “good life” should look like once you’ve said sayonara to your work life: You’re moving to Florida, right? Or maybe Arizona? Time to chuck that big house and buy yourself a Lock and Leave. Have you signed up Havefor a cruise yet?youthought about a sports car or a boat?
The peer pressure can feel just as intense at this stage as it did when you were a teenager! I know plenty of people who have moved to Florida and Arizona; who’ve bought that spanking new Lock and Leave, taken a cruise or two, or acquired a cool new car or boat. For some, it was the right thing to do. Others didn’t find the happiness they hoped they would, and a few even retraced their steps and made a different choice.
IntentionalityUncompromising
I also know several renegades who wisely placed a patient finger on the pause button, to give themselves time to regroup, and in some cases, ask themselves for the very first time: What do I want for my life now? Because many of us have considerable experience living the auto-pilot life, or one that has followed a hand-me-down script, living from a place of uncompromising intentionality feels unfamiliar and maybe even uncomfortable. But think about it: if you don’t put yourself squarely and unequivocally in the driver’s seat of your life at this point, then when will you?
Explore how you want to “show up” in the years ahead. We retain the ability to “reinvent” ourselves if we are open to it. Maybe you’ve been a little stingy with your time, more judgmental than you’d like to admit, or closedminded. Maybe you decide that those ways of being don’t reflect how you want to experience yourself or how you want others to experience you. It is 100% within your power to be more of who you want to be. If you’re not sure where to start, look to your core values for guidance. Kindness, generosity, being good-humored, being a good listener, having empathy for others may fit into your evolving version of you. Be honest with yourself about what you want your days to look like. Consult all available resources for tried and true as well as off the wall approaches to being retired. Then, adopt those that feel right and true for you. I know an Atlanta-based woman who moved to a small town in Georgia, started planting vegetables, and then planned two African safaris. Her drivers were a simple life, a love of nature, and adventure involving animals.
Others say they’ve waited a lifetime to devote their free time to a cause they are committed to, and still other retirees who land on “getting myself healthy and fit, then figuring out the rest!”
I’ve given this a lot of thought and poked around to see what others who focus on retirement are saying. If your intuition or experience is telling you to press pause before diving into a prescribed retirement, consider the following IN THIS ORDER:approach,
Determine what you want to have in your life at this point. There is a lot of peer pressure –some of it quite smug – to toss, trash, and declutter. I get it. Most of us have far too much stuff. But again, don’t cave in just because it’s the thing to do, or because the people in your life are making you feel like a hot, cluttered mess. The things around you reflect the life you’ve lived. You get to decide what you want tokeep; no one needs to understand because it’s not about them. Interestingly, I’ve noticed a counter movement where retirees have let go of the idea that they have to declutter so that the kids won’t have to! So, there you have it, in sequence:
• Who do you want to be?
• What do you want to have? I am rooting for you!
• How do you want to live?

Quarry Park is a place where I get religious. I feel the footprint of the Creator here in the gorgeousness of the area, the serenity of the atmosphere, and the quality of the light. Up in these hills, standing behind the metal fence surrounding the perimeter of the quarry and the lake at its base (for safety of visitors and safekeeping of the environment), you feel the living animation of this nature scape, in its waters, grasses and trees. I am grateful to have stumbled upon the divine archi-tecture here and it is where I say my prayers, for my family, the world, my beloved dog, too, quietly lying at my feet, and where I am encouraged to shape and promote an attitude of reverence for all life. Each of us needs a spiritual refuge to practice the acts of gratitude in an increasingly beleaguered and set-upon world. There are so many things I need to talk to God about, and in this beautiful domain I have found a wonderful habitat to do so.
BY RENEE SKUDRA One day I drove down a random avenue looking for an environmentally beautiful retreat, somewhere to ponder my woes. With my Bichon Frise, Jackson, and my bookish Civil War historian son in tow, I ended up on 1790 Quarry Road and discovered, by sheer accident, an unaccountably beautiful lake with an adjoining shimmering landscape, punctuated by numerous trees and braces of wild flowers. That evening I found a place which has become my sanctuary, which has become sacred, and where I look closely at things, large and small, and note the color of the sky as it moves towards nightfall. Virginia Woolf once wrote that, “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” I haven’t had much luck with the money part, but I have found it essential to have some sort of private and personal space where creative juices can flow. Quarry Park is this aesthetic oasis for me and an event, not simply a location, which I urge others to visit. Located in the southeastern part of Winston-Salem, it can serve as a recreational and spiritual resource for the city, as well as a cultural asset. The quarry is located in close proximity to Winston-Salem State University and UNC School of the Arts, and only a short distance from the downtown central business district. I did a bit of research and discovered that, at one time, indigenous peoples like the Cherokee, Saura and the Keyauwee, lived in the area until their forced removal in the 1830s under President Andrew Jackson. At some point during the mid-1920s to 1970s, Vulcan Materials Company operated a quarry (known as Piedmont Quarry) on approximately 228.2 acres, mining and producing rock aggregates. A large amount of those products eventually went to the construction of the Interstate Business 40 highway project, the Westinghouse Turbine Plant, Stroh’s Brewery, and the construction of WinstonSalem State University. In 1997, the property in its entirety (1 larger and 1 smaller quarry) was donated to the City. The larger quarry, with its water 200-300 feet deep, seems to have a life of its own, teeming with freshwater jellyfish and other life in its crystal clear environs, but also boasting a surreal view from its topmost hilly exposures from which well-known city buildings can also be seen.
Quarry Park has undeniably kindled in me an eye that looks more intensively and appreciatively upon nature’s treasures and allows a quiet moment of reverie. My son, always bent in the direction of elucidating history, informs me that in the late 1990s, the quarry was featured in an independent film called “The Lesser Evil,” and we vow to find it and watch it. He goes on to tell me that the Indigenous peoples originally inhabiting this area interacted with the Moravians during the late 1700s and early 1800s, but were forcibly removed under the federal Indian Removal Act, causing them unconscionable pain and unwanted displacement. I am listening, but I am also busy acknowledging the power of the sacred here, the moments on this soil, whether they be miraculous or mundane, and observing the tiniest details, patterns and geometries that are everywhere apparent, waterfowl alighting on the lake, a colony of mushrooms pushing forth their heads in the grass, a wild hare running for cover. I put my ego and its measures of self-worth away before this profound expanse of beauty gracing the park and lake. This place in nature is the equivalent to the “room of my own” Wolfe spoke of, where I can put aside my catastrophizing, sundry griefs, and troubles and practice a ritual of necessary gratitude and prayer, for the redtailed hawk circling overhead and the cumulus clouds gathering in the darkening sky. I invite every reader to visit Quarry Park and see why Gregory James, with the Winston-Salem Parks & Recreation Service, told me “It is a hidden gem of Winston-Salem.”

Nikki Miller-Ka is a powerful and inspiring woman who has worked so hard to make it to where she is today. Her story involves following her specific passion and doing hard work until she got where she wanted to be. “I am literally living my dream,” says Nikki. “My job is traveling the world, eating, drinking, having a good time, and writing about it.” Nikki graduated from ECU and planned on being a teacher, but when she found herself in an internship with a reporter, she discovered her passion, and her love for writing was unveiled. After being able to shadow this woman who looked like her and did something she wanted to do, she was set. “Representation really matters,” says Nikki when describing the importance of having every kind of person in every kind of role. She went on to work as a journalist, and quickly realized the topic she wanted to cover: FOOD. The job wasn’t exactly available where she was, so Nikki took her experience and started Nik Snacks, her food blog!
After discovering her love for writing, she paired it with her love for food. “I like to eat, I like restaurants, and food is an integral part of life,” Nikki shared. She discovered that her favorite things to do involve food and writing, so why not combine them? With her previous education in English, she chose to then pursue education in food. Nikki explained that learning how to cook and learning about food are totally separate and different ideas. She wanted to be able to do both, so she packed herself up and moved to Florida to pursue a degree at Le Cordon Bleu-Miami, a culinary arts school. While learning at Le Cordon Bleu-Miami, Nikki kept her specific passion and goal at the forefront of her mind throughout. She wanted to be a full time food writer. Not many others in culinary school were able to have such a clear purpose for their future, but Nikki’s never wavered. She left Miami with a bundle of creative culinary energy that she needed to get out. “I had to find a way to make a career out of this,” said Nikki.

While writing for multiple different publications, Nikki was able to make valuable connections in the industry that she still values to this day. She was hired at one of the oldest and most renowned food publications in America, and even had the sixth most popular recipe on their entire website at one time! She worked very hard and accomplished a lot, but after spending time giving this venture her all, she felt it was time to move on to “Ithe next chapter.literallyletgoand let God,” said Nikki. “People say that all of the time but don’t feel it in their soul.” She released everything, hit the ground running, and opened her eyes to see what was next. This is when she began to truly live her dream. Now, as a full time freelance food and travel writer, Nikki has gotten the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic, resorts in Florida, Puerto Rico, Portland, and more! When asked about a typical day in her life, she compared her schedule to having a “well oiled machine.” Nikki is running a business, and she is the business. From customer relations, schedules, meetings, logistics, social media, and much more, she is the woman behind it all! She has her own hours of operations, and boundaries as well, that make her a success. Nikki can be an inspiration to us all - she discovered her passions, put in the hard work, and is living out her true dream. She makes the world a better place with her love of writing and food. Check out Nikki and all she has to offer online and on her socials.

One of the colors of the year has been green and this is one shade that is perfect for your fall wardrobe. I always love neutral colors and 9 times out of 10 you can pair them with a skirt + color like this. This tulle skirt is one of those pieces you can dress up or down. It would look adorable with a pair of light tan booties and/or sneakers and a graphic tee. One great thing I noticed about LoveWell Boutique when I was there were all the great staple pieces they have, such as this tan tank. If you’re looking for some tops to add to your wardrobe for layering, they’ve got you covered.
Fall is here! This is by far my favorite season because of the cooler temps, but for sure because of the fashion. We’re kicking off the fall season this month with LoveWell Boutique. Located right here in Winston-Salem, LoveWell Boutique is proudly owned by a husband and wife who opened their doors back in 2019. Through their business, they build women up so that they can go out into the world and make a difference. We love that!

This next look is one of my favorites! You can hardly ever go wrong with a black on black look, especially when you add the perfect jacket, or in this case, shacket with it. Shackets are a mix of shirts + jackets and you can actually pair them with multiple looks. This one from LWB is warm and comfy. This look could be elevated with a pair of taller boots or booties as well. If you’ve got an upcoming mountain trip planned for the fall, this outfit would be perfect Iffor your trip!you’rewondering what else you can wear a shacket with, wonder no more. A shacket can be worn with a tank and denim, Spanx leggings, leather leggings/pants, and/or with a skirt. I love the colors in this particular one because they are more neutral, making it easier to put outfits together.
Our next outfit is this gorgeous burgundy dress. From the texture of the sleeve, to the neck-line to the pockets, the details make the dress. As you can see, I took the more casual route with this dress; however, a pair of tan or brown western boots or booties would also take this dress up another notch. This is one of those dresses you can wear all fall long and even into the holiday season. It’s perfect for a little date night, work, a football game, brunch or Thanksgiving dinner. Our last outfit is a great office look. These pants can be worn with so many different things. Remember, it’s always great to have those staple pieces in your closet that you can get a lot of mileage out of - meaning, the more outfits you can make with a pair of pants, top or jacket, the better!
XO, Erika Taylor
You could also pair these pants with a longer cardigan, a leather jacket or even a blazer. I put them with this short sleeve sweater quarter zip and a very cute (and comfy) pair of mules to give a monochromatic-type look. As we previously talked about, a pop of leopard print is always a good idea and this is one of those looks that would be great for a pop of leopard either in the shoe or purse! This top would also look great with a pair of distressed denim and sneakers or dress it up a little more with a pair of black slacks and nude pumps. If you’ve loved these looks or if you’re looking for some new pieces for your fall wardrobe, definitely check out LoveWell Boutique. They also have a great selection of accessories and even make-up to choose from. You can be color-matched using their app on your phone, which is a super unique feature, especially for a boutique! Another bonus to the boutique is their staff, all of the women are so sweet and very willing to help their customers. Check them out this month for your fall outfits! Happy Shopping!

In college you would have thought I was majoring in procrastination. Regardless of what class it was for, if you saw me tackling a big project - especially one that would involve a presentation of sorts - you could bet it was due in the very, very near future. Afterall, why do something today if you can wait until tomorrow and do it under the weight of added stress?
The reality is that our lives are busy and filled with never ending tasks most weeks. It’s far more common to approach a task list with the plan of crossing off the simpler things and moving the “big ones” to the bottom in an effort to feel more productive and accomplished. What so many don’t realize is that there’s actually a better way! Instead of jumping to the smaller tasks, hop on over to your most challenging one and try “swallowing the frog” instead! What exactly does it mean to “swallow the frog”? Don’t worry, no actual frogs will be hurt in the process! Whether it’s the task that takes the most time, the one that pushes you outside of your comfort zone or simply the one you’ve been dreading, embracing the most challenging “todo” on your list follows the “Swallow the Frog” productivity method. This method is centered around prioritization to avoid procrastination. By prioritizing the most difficult task it frees up your mind and allows you to think more clearly as you approach the balance of your items that need accomplishing. How do you define unique frog of the day?your One of the hardest parts of being productive isn’t actually doing the things, but having an actual plan of attack to get them all done. When you embrace the “Swallow the Frog” method it’s important to be highly critical of what you’re going to prioritize first as your frog. First, admit to yourself that checking email, replying to calendar invites, organizing your desk are never going to be your frog. Instead, look at the things you need to do that may play a larger part in your other tasks, the ones you need to do before you can move forward on something else. Another identifier is the time it takes to accomplish the task. Look for something that is going to be more time consuming than the rest and may take a little more brain power - there’s your frog!
Swallow the Frog How Tackling The Hard Stuff First Makes You More Productive BY TARYN JEREZ

Have you heard that the early bird gets the worm? Well, in this case it’s the early frog I suppose! The best thing you can do to create a mindset that allows you to accomplish more in less time is to start your day off by “Swallowing the Frog.” Once you identify which task is your frog, that’s your cue to get to work! When you push yourself to get that task done first thing as you start your day you are basically telling procrastination to kindly see its way out. Make it part of your routine at the end of each day to look at what’s on your list for tomorrow and identify your frog! What about days when you don’t want “Swallow the Frog”?to Here’s the thing about frogs - nobody wants to eat that sucker! In fact, that’s why I think it’s called “swallow the frog” and now “eat the frog” - you have to close your eyes and get it down quick before you realize what you’re doing! If you’re interested in learning more about AARF and how you can support the mission, please visit AARF’s website (www.aarfws.org). The new facility is located at 302 Thurston Street in Winston-Salem and is open to the public from 12–5pm Tuesday–Friday. Adoption fairs with adoptable dogs and cats are every Saturday from 11am–2pm.
Opens New Facility
“Not only are their generosity and commitment to investing in animal welfare unmatched, but we were fortunate to learn from Christine’s experience starting and building an animal shelter in Fresno.” A truly local organization, AARF was founded in 1995 by community volunteers, Leila Warren and Starr Stimmel. AARF’s humble beginnings included adoption fairs in the Thruway Shopping Center, meetings at the public library, and volunteer fosters covering the costs of animal care.
“We couldn’t ask for better community partners on this project than the Morykwas family,” says Mitchell Currin, AARF’s first Executive Director.
With the addition of a staff veterinarian and the investment in a surgical suite, AARF can keep up with the spay and neuter procedures that directly address the community’s stray problem.
Despite challenges, AARF was always guided by passionate volunteers working hard for the animals’ best interests.
While these big changes bring new opportunities, AARF is committed to maintaining the core values represented in its mission of “finding loving homes for dogs and cats through rescue, foster care, veterinary services, adoption, and education.”
Oneor assist strays daily.ofthemostimpactful opportunities with the new facility is the ability to perform spay and neuter surgeries in-house. According to a recent study by Mars Veterinary Health, the United States will need nearly 41,000 additional veterinarians to meet the demand by 2030. Indeed, AARF has experienced the challenge of scheduling spay and neuter surgeries with partners at local veterinary clinics. According to Currin, the current system isn’t sustainable. “We have great veterinary partners who have served our organization for many years, but they are overwhelmed with the rising demand for their time and services. We also must ask our volunteers and staff to jump through more hoops with transportation and scheduling logistics working with multiple partners,” he says.
Finding a Forever Home
AARF still depends on community volunteers and donations to accomplish this mission and welcomes new supporters. Currin adds, “We are excited for the potential to expand our volunteer opportunities and add new corporate and private partnerships with our new space. We are just scratching the surface of our possibilities.”
AARF plays a critical role in addressing the problem of homeless cats and dogs in the community. Each year more than 6 million animals are surrendered to shelters. AARF receives countless requests to rehome pets
Like most things at AARF, the project began with a rescue. When local animal advocates and philanthropists Michael and Christine Morykwas found an abandoned cat and kittens by the dumpsters at a local country club, they reached out to AARF for help. That relationship kickstarted the multi-year project.
The new facility was built on this solid foundation. “This gift has been truly transformational for our organization,” adds Currin. “After many years operating with a limited budget and minimal staff, this facility shows animal lovers in our community that we are here to stay.”
After more than 25 years of finding homes for cats and dogs in Winston-Salem, the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation [AARF] cut the ribbon on its forever home on August 2. The new facility offers more than 6,000 square feet dedicated to providing veterinary care for animals, housing adoptable cats, training volunteers, and hosting community events.

In August, Mae’s Makeovers celebrated its 8th year in business as a bridal makeup and hair company made up of a strong team of ladies who specialize in airbrush makeup and boho bridal braids. The Mae’s Makeover team recently expanded its horizons in January with the opening of its stunning new salon, Mae’s Beauty Bar.

Add Magic to Your Wedding Day with Mae’s Makeovers
A lot has changed since Mae’s Makeovers was first created eight years ago. As a young female entrepreneur, Mary-Ann has learned many valuable lessons about running a business throughout the years. When she first started as the owner of Mae’s Makeovers, she approached each day with a structured regime in mind. Since life rarely plays out how we expect it to, Mary-Ann now knows the importance of flexibility and being prepared to roll with the punches on the job. She and her team also pride themselves on providing stellar customer service and putting clients at ease. Because brides are sharing their special moments with Mary-Ann and her team, Mae’s Makeovers is dedicated to creating a welcoming and upbeat atmosphere to help add to the excitement of wedding days.
Mae’s Makeovers and Mae’s Beauty Bar run smoothly thanks to Mary-Ann’s great team of gals. Mary-Ann first hired her sidekick Bethany six years ago, who performs flawless airbrush makeup for clients. Bethany later introduced Mary-Ann to Felicia, who makes lash extensions and brow treatments look easy.
When Mary-Ann was in high school and college, her friends often asked her to help them with their hair and makeup. She continued strengthening her skills in cosmetology, graduating with a degree in Management from N.C. State University before earning a certification in makeup artistry and updos from the London Beauty Institute. After college, she worked full-time at a financial firm during the week, and performed cosmetic services for weddings on weekends. After a few years working a full-time desk job, she decided to follow her passion in cosmetology, graduating from Paul Mitchell and becoming a licensed cosmetologist.
Mae’s Makeovers owner Mary-Ann Ladd always aspired to open Mae’s Beauty Bar to the public, but the COVID-19 pandemic sparked the perfect storm for her to finally make her dreams come to life. The pandemic allowed Mae’s Beauty Bar in Kernersville to serve as a “home base” for her team to take necessary safety precautions and provide services to clients during the week before traveling to different wedding venues across the state to provide cosmetic services to brides and bridal parties. Want to bring your bridal party to the Mae’s Beauty Bar team? The Beauty Bar is also able to host wedding-day bridal parties for ladies to sip on mimosas and snack on charcuterie in order to de-stress during wedding day prep. The team at Mae’s Beauty Bar treats brides and clients of all kinds to top-notch cosmetic services in a stylish, intimate, and cozy atmosphere. MaryAnn and her team offer microblading, airbrush makeup, lash tinting and lifts, facials, teeth whitening, and lip blushing. The most commonly requested service offered at Mae’s Beauty Bar is hand-tied hair extensions, a specialty of MaryAnn’s. Because each weft is carefully tied by hand, these extensions are less visible, feel stronger, and prevent shedding. With hand-tied extensions, there is minimal hair breakage or stress on the scalp, allowing clients’ hair to continue to grow to be healthy and long.

I’m not sure how it happened, but I am now in my fifties. Somehow, I thought it would take a lot longer to get to this age! Some things are not so great about getting older—gray hair, hot flashes, wrinkles, gravity… I’ll stop there as I’m getting depressed. But there are some positive things about being in this stage of life. I have time to read and take naps. I don’t have to operate a taxi service any longer (and with the price of gas, that’s a bonus). I don’t have to feed everyone. And I care less about what others think of me.
YOU PROBABLY CAN’T HAVE IT ALL
SLOW DOWN Being busy is not a badge of honor. Figure out what’s important to you and say no to things that don’t fit these criteria. Chill out on the activities your kids are involved in —they probably aren’t going to be soccer stars or ballerinas. Doing so much running wears them out and wears you out, too. Finally, make sure to give yourself ten to fifteen minutes of quiet time in the morning - you’ll start your day from a centered, calm state.
TIPS ON CHILDREN Children are a blessing and a joy, but if you have them, keep in mind that they will break your heart and scare you to death more times than you could ever imagine. And you aren’t done when they are in their twenties and beyond, as I thought would be the case. Puppies are a good lower maintenance substitute. Just sayin’.
EXERCISE AND EAT RIGHT Yay! There is one that I did consistently. As a result, I haven’t had struggles with my weight or health problems. I also think I may have gone off the deep end if I didn’t exercise because it helps me manage stress. I can even still do plyometrics (jump training), only sometimes I pee.

ACCEPT AND LOVE YOURSELF AS GOD MADE YOU Quit comparing yourself to others and understand that God made you the way you are for a reason—he doesn’t make mistakes. Get counseling if you need to work through your issues. You must love yourself before you can love and nurture others.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self? Here are some tips that I would share with the younger version of me.
BY LESLIE SPEAS
CHOOSE A PARTNER WISELY AND WELL Be with someone who will treat you well and takes care of your soul. Understand that it isn’t your partner’s job to fill the emptiness inside you. And you probably aren’t going to be able to change the other person –only God can do that. Don’t settle, even if you feel it’s time that you find a partner. It’s better to be single than in a difficult, unfulfilling relationship.
P.S. Also, stay out of the sun and try not to squint!
Focus more on relationships and less on building bank balances and climbing the career ladder. In the end, relationships are what will matter, especially your relationship with God.

God used this story and all of its parts to bring us the lineage of our Savior, Jesus! The people and stories involved in the genealogy of Jesus are undeserving in the eyes of the world. Most of them have major mess ups or deep losses. God chose to allow these people and situations to lead up to the birth of Jesus. This shows us that He can use every story and every person for our good and His glory.
Road Through Ruth
BY ANGELIA CORNATZER
and His character, even in the midst of struggle and uncertainty. Here we go, down a road through Ruth!
While the book of Ruth itself barely mentions the name of God, we can dig deep and see that this story is all about God. We can see God’s glorious intentionality and redemption at every turn. The Bible is full of things we can learn about our God’s character and design for our life on this earth as we walk with Him. We see time and time again from scripture how our extraordinary God works in ordinary ways. Some may discount the Bible as an ancient fairy tale, but we can hold fast to the timeless truths that we see on every page.
That is not the end of the story, though. As we continue reading, we see her try to go alone back to her country. Ruth, her daughter in law, would not let her go alone. She decided that she would go with Naomi wherever she went and worship the God that Naomi worshiped. They returned to Israel and came across a man named Boaz. He allowed them to glean grain and have enough to eat from his barley harvest. Further in the story we see that Boaz was a man of noble character and Ruth was a woman of noble character.
Back to back she experienced civil unrest, a famine, moving to foreign land, the death of her husband, witnessing her sons marry
The book of Ruth begins out with a statement about the time period they were in. This was a hard and dark season of having no king and everyone just doing whatever they wanted to do. They were in cultural unrest and in the midst of this, there was a famine. We start the story looking at a family who fled the famine and went to Moab in search of food. This family contained Naomi, her husband Elimelech, and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion. They arrived in Moab and soon after that, their father, Elimelech passed away.
As we look into this story, it is so important to look at how God worked through it all. There was loss, hardship, and deep lamenting. We see how God led them to redemption and gave them provision.
From this story we can learn about God’s faithfulness, intentionality, and the way He can work all things together just like He did for Naomi and Ruth.
Following this, the sons married Moabite women named Orpah and Ruth. A little while later, they experienced even more loss as Littleboth sons passed away.didNaomiknowthat so much turmoil would occur in her life.
104 | ForsythWoman.com
After doing things the right way, they were married and bore a son named Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. Just a few generations after this, we see Jesus come through this lineage.

5. Send your forgiveness inward. Say something like: “I forgive myself for hurting Susan. I am working on how I satisfy my needs and how I interact with others.”
2. Remind yourself that everything you do is intended to fulfill some need. Everything. In other words, there was a reason behind what you did. Go there. Ask yourself what need you were trying to satisfy that prompted your need for selfforgiveness. Don’t judge the need; just accept what was really going on with you and take responsibility for your actions and their consequences.
The inability to send forgiveness inward can be torturous. When you see someone you care about suffering in this way, you do what you can to be helpful. But when the tables are turned, you may have a hard time taking your own advice. Feeling good about yourself can be very difficult when: you feel guilty because you think you’ve done something wrong, or when you feel ashamed because you think there’s something wrong with you. You may get stuck in that torturous place because you: • have no role model or road map for self-forgiveness • have conflicted feelings about what you did
“Forgiveness is the release of resentment or anger.”
BY JEAN MARIE JOHNSON Yourself
Forgive
“Forgiveness is the gift you give yourself.” -Suzanne Somers
As with many things worth mastering, selfforgiveness takes courage and practice. Here’s an approach that will help you to turn forgiveness inward when you need to:
4. Mend the bridge. Say, “I am sorry for what I did.” Or “My comment was very insensitive. I apologize.” Or “How I acted was uncalled for. I hope you can forgive me.” If the person you have hurt or harmed is no longer alive or no longer in your life, ask yourself how you can take the lesson you learned and help someone else. Remember that many of us are struggling with similar selfforgiveness challenges.
3. Think about the person you want to be. Let’s say that you took a good look at your words or actions and realized that you tried to show someone up or compete with them in a nasty way. Why? Because you were tired of feeling unappreciated. Instead of doing the same thing next time, stay attuned to your thoughts and feelings when they arise. Work on “checking” that response and, for the longer term, turning your attention to what you can do to feel appreciated in healthy ways.
You’ve said it to others: “No one is perfect.” “Try to let it go.” And finally:“When are you to forgive yourself?”going
- Psychology Today
• don’t feel deserving of forgiveness • lack sufficient coping skills to deal with the discomfort of the process of Everyoneself-forgivenessmakesmistakes and wishes they could go back and undo uncalled for words or actions that caused someone else hurt, pain, or loss. But we can’t. To move forward, we need to learn how to forgive ourselves and to “make things right” as best we can.
1. Instead of spinning your wheels by avoiding, minimizing, justifying your actions, or beating yourself up, consider your values, the person you want to be, and then take take responsibility for what you did, and the consequences thereof. It has to start here.
6. Let it go. If you find this difficult, it may be an indication that your self-forgiveness is incomplete. So, forgive yourself for not having an On-Off switch and remind yourself that every day you work on self-forgiveness, you are also working on being the best version of you.

If you could choose to live at any time in the past, when would it be? What if you lived 100 years ago?
pastimes included: attending movies, going dancing, attending sports games (especially baseball – known as the national pastime), gathering around the radio, and playing games.
Let’s look back 100 years at what life was like for a woman in the 1920s. The 1920s was a time of big changes for women. It was the first decade in which their interests and abilities outside the home were truly recognized. When I think about the 1920s, flappers are one of the first things I think of, and while flappers were a big part of the cultural change of the 1920s, most women of the decade were homemakers who took care of their homes, husbands, and children. In 1920, two thirds of people over the age of 14 were married. The average age of marriage for men was 24, and the average age for women was 21. Interestingly, the average family size began to shrink during this decade. The 1920s women started to embrace a looser, more comfortable style of clothing...leaving corsets by the wayside. Skirts were becoming a more common fashion choice and the length of the skirts started to shorten from ankle length to knee length. Bobbed hairstyles were in fashion and women started to wear more makeup.
110 | ForsythWoman.com
Consumerism was becoming more prevalent with advertising being marketed directly to the 1920s woman through magazines, newspapers, radio, and movies. Much like today, advertisers sought to create an image of an ideal woman who was extremely proficient in all the things she did! A hard standard to live up to then, as now.
Women had fought for their right to vote for nearly a century before the amendment was finally passed. Those who took up this cause faced jail time and harassment in their attempt to acquire women’s rights.
One of the most notable changes for women of the 1920s was securing the right to vote when the 19th Amendment passed on August 26, 1920. The 19th Amendment did not secure the vote for all women in the United States, but it was still a groundbreaking achievement that paved the way for broader change.
1920s women typically had jobs as secretaries, telephone operators, factory workers, store clerks, and schoolteachers.
At the close of World War I, the 1920s were the beginning of an era of great change and advancement. With new developments in technology, the world of the 1920s woman Itbecame much bigger.wasatimeofmodernization and innovation which would significantly change the way women spent their days. There were many new time saving gadgets created for women to simplify their duties in the home. Women had access to ice boxes, electric stoves, washing machines and vacuums, among other appliances, and they could use the time they saved in a myriad of ways.
The number of women working rose by 2 million in the 1920s, which was still only a small percentage of the population overall. Discrimination in wages persisted, as well as the opinion that women only worked until they married.
Regrettably, the prosperity of the 1920s would ultimately come to a screeching halt in its last year when the stock market crashed in 1929. Life in the next decade of the 1930s would look drastically different for women.
The 1920s was a complex time for women as they continued to fill the roles that were expected of them, but were also able to explore other distractions or avenues of self-fulfillment. This decade offered women more options than had been available in decades before.
The 1920s were a time of unprecedented prosperity for many. There was more money to be made and families had more time and disposable income to participate in activities just for fun. These
Sometimes life today can become so chaotic and stressful we romanticize the past and long for something simpler. Was it a simpler time though?

• Savor sippables like chai black tea, homemade apple cider, and mulled wine. Try adding spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom pods, star anise, and black peppercorns (optional) to loose black tea. Add vanilla, grated ginger, or orange zest for a flavor boost. For spiced apple cider, boil apple juice or cider with cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice (optional). For mulled wine the Swedish way (known as glögg), boil red wine, port, brandy, and water with orange peel or orange slices, raisins, blanched almonds (optional), cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, and grated ginger or ginger root slices. Sweeten to taste with honey, maple syrup, or stevia. Make the most of the splendor of this season. This is your precious time to fall in love with fall!
• You don’t have to be hiking on a trail to snack on an energy boosting, blood sugar stabilizing trail mix. For healthy at-home or on-the-go snacking, combine your fav granola or healthy cereal, nut/ seed mix, and dried fruit. Adding in some plain, butter-free popcorn is another option. Try a combination of your favorite granola, pecans, walnuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, and raisins.
• Identify the constellations and wish on a star while dancing and toasting marshmallows for s’mores by a bonfire.
Fall is a season of harvest and transformation as trees display their vivid array of autumn colors. Make the most of fall’s magical mystique as you make more memories. Here are some ideas and inspiration to creatively celebrate the magic of fall:
• Get a fall beauty and fashion make-over, reflecting the colors of autumn. Get your cues from nature, inspired by the colorful, changing leaves on trees, berries, plants, skies, and earth, and try out a new cut and color and make-up that suits the season. If green eyeshadow is too strong for you, try more subtle shades in a more neutral palette. For a highlighter color, try shimmery metallic gold or matte off-white eye shadows. For more subtle contour shades, try shades of bronze and brown. And for autumnal colors, however bold or subtle, try hues of sunshine yellow, zestful orange, and fiery red.
• Take your yoga mat outside and enjoy body conditioning, including relaxing tai chi, out in nature.
• Decorate with pine cones, fall flowers, gourds and pumpkins, or other elements from nature and add to the ambiance with candles.
• Sip and savor the festive flavors of fall like chai, pumpkin spice, apple cider, pecan, and caramel.
• Take a nature walk and toss colorful leaves in the air like magical confetti.
• Get crafty with colorful leaves, pinecones, acorns, and other natural materials collected on your next nature walk.
• Stay cozy and warm in flannel shirts, sipping a cuppa something comforting.
• Enjoy listening to nature’s symphony of crickets and frogs, still out and about until hibernation season arrives. Capture their sweet songs on your phone with voice memo or with a field recorder and their music will be ready when you need a nature escape.
MagicCelebrateCreativelythe&MystiqueofFall
• Combine fishing trips with canoeing, kayaking, and camping out in the mountains.
• Fall in love with the colorful crisp leaves and crisp autumn apples as-is, on your salad, or as baked sweet treats. Keep that kitchen and tummy warm with baking. Here’s a quick and easy recipe for apple crumble/crisp. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Rinse and slice or chop your choice of apples and place in a baking dish. Top with granola, raisins and chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, and/or almonds. Add a few dabs of softened butter mixed with brown sugar or for healthier options, go for coconut oil and maple syrup. Set timer for about 20 minutes and set dish in oven. Check with a fork to see if apples are softened and the granola mixture has melded in.
• Take your journal, sketch pad, or easel outdoors to set up at a scenic spot or find a perfect park bench and capture the splendor of the scene.

In my work as a Human Resources Consultant, I teach the 4- step BEAN model to guide constructive feedback conversations. Here is how it works:
• Tell the story of what happened, focusing on the behavior and not the person or their intentions.
1. Describe the Behavior Be descriptive, timely, and use “I” statements.
• Don’t initiate a feedback conversation when you are angry. It will never go well! Practice the pause and come back to it when you are in a calmer state of mind.
3. Ask for input and explore alternatives Pause and ask the other person to share their thoughts.
• Prepare in can be very helpful. The model sharedadvance!below
• Make the feedback specific, actionable, and timely (as close to the event as possible).
Feedback is information about past behavior delivered in the present which may impact future behavior. Ken Blanchard says that “Feedback is the breakfast (and lunch, dinner and midnight snack) of champions.” Why is feedback so important? In a nutshell, without it, you don’t know what you are doing well and how Positiveyou can improve.feedback is used to thank and praise other people. It is easy to give and doesn’t take much pre-planning. Constructive feedback is clearly more difficult, but it is essential for productive relationships and workplaces. Over my career, I have observed that most people don’t do constructive feedback very well. Why? Because we tend to avoid conflict and don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings. So, what can we do? Here are some essentials to delivering constructive feedback in a professional and effective manner.
• Use a feedback loop to make sure the other person understood what you communicated.
2. Effect – This seemed to make others hesitant to share and took the meeting in a negative direction.
BY LESLIE SPEAS
2. Describe the actual or potential Effect of the behavior Share what happened or what could happen because of the behavior.
• Tailor your feedback approach to the individual. Not everyone responds to feedback in the same way. Some like it direct and others may need you to sugarcoat it a bit.
After the meeting, you decide that you are going to give Nelly feedback. You could approach the situation as follows using the BEAN model: 1. Behavior – Nelly, I was bothered by a comment that you made in the meeting today. When I asked for feedback, you said you didn’t know why I was asking because I was going to do what I wanted anyway.
4. Next steps – So, next time you have a concern related to the project, you will share it with me privately and we can discuss it, rather than in Willa public forum.thesefeedback conversations always go well? Despite your best efforts, you may run into defensiveness or deflection at times. However, using these tips can help increase the potential for success. As a result, you will have more effective relationships, more engaged team members, and a stronger organization.
4. Determine Next steps. Work together towards a mutually agreeable solution.
Let’s work through an example: Negative Nelly is a member of a project team you are leading. In the meeting today, you asked team members for their suggestions and Nelly said, “I don’t know why you are asking. You are going to do what you want anyway.”
• Make sure that you have balanced positive feedback with constructive feedback over time. Some sources say that we need three instances of positive feedback to every criticism to maintain a positive relationship.
3. Ask for input – What makes you feel this way? Is there a reason that you feel that your comment needed to be shared in that forum? What else would you like to share about the situation?

I have a client who sent me a voice message sharing how excited she was to say “no” to one of her social media clients on something that was outside of her project scope. Can I just tell you that the energy on the other side of her voice message was dripping with pride. And you know what? That’s how it should be. So often business owners feel like they have to say “yes” to every ask and opportunity that comes their way in order to be successful. The reality is that by drawing a healthy line for you and your clients you create a business relationship that has clear expectations and avoids burnout. The best thing you can do is create boundaries that embrace what you need.
#2 BOUNDARIES
BY TARYN JEREZ OF ONECRAFTYMISS.COM
Landing new clients or selling out of your latest product release are exciting, but doing business in ways that honor the way you actually want to be doing business is on a whole other level! Unfortunately, it can become too easy to say “yes” to the things you don’t want to be doing or keep working in ways that don’t feel good due to things like fear, scarcity or insecurity.
Hustle & Heart Challenge
#3 PIVOTING Have you ever heard the saying, “the most dangerous phrase is “we’ve always done it this way”? Never get stuck doing something in your business just because you’ve always done it. No longer want to offer custom work? Remove it from your website. Don’t love shooting newborn photos as a photographer? Simply stop saying yes to those shoots and refer to someone else. When you embrace the act of pivoting in your business it lets you say “no ‘’ to things that aren’t serving you anymore and embrace something new! Allowing yourself to dream about what’s next and different in your business keeps it feeling good and can lead to more success!
Mindset matters, friend! After 6 years of working with women as they tackle their business goals, I can tell you with 100% certainty that mindset is the biggest barrier that we face as we work towards success. It takes a whole lot of intention to overcome those feelings but there’s magic on the other end waiting for you. While there are so many opportunities to celebrate growth as a business owner, I’m sharing three major mindset shifts that deserve all the confetti!
This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.
Consider sharing your struggles with a mentor, coach or business friend who understands and can help you talk it through.

#1 PRICING One of the most common sources of insecurity of business owners I’ve worked with comes from pricing! There are so many “what ifs” and “am I doing this right?” thoughts bouncing around with the common theme of comparison. It takes a lot of mindset growth to price your work confidently and let go of other people’s opinions on what’s too high or too low. When you create a pricing strategy surrounding the value you provide in your business, paired with the financial goals you have both professionally and personally, there is such a positive change in your mindset. When you know the “why” behind your prices, you become more confident in your pricing. This leads to easier selling conversations, more accurate sales goals and a clearer growth strategy long term.
Celebrate in Your Businessto
This month, challenge yourself to examine the areas in your business in which you feel held back by your mindset. Are you doing too much or just not enough of what brings you joy? Are you not making enough sales or simply not pricing your offers according to their value?

TIP #4: DON’T CHECK LUGGAGE
TIP #3: KEEP SPONTANEITY TO A MINIMUM
A trip to Myrtle Beach leaves plenty of room for spontaneity, but a transatlantic trip to Prague does not. In today’s postCOVID world, it’s important to do your research and stay updated on the current events and political happenings of your destination. If the news is showing an upturn in political unrest or economic hardship, it might be a better idea to choose another country for the time being. For the six months prior to my trip to Italy in November 2021, I kept tabs on the COVID-19 infection rates for each region of Italy to determine which region would be least likely to re-enter lockdown if the situation worsened. In the process, I learned so much about Italy’s pandemic trends and policies as a byproduct of my obsessive preparation that I should have become Italy’s next prime minister.
There are virtues to packing light, despite what your urge to pack four pairs of shoes for a two-week trip is telling you. Keep in mind that many streets in Europe are made of cobblestones, and the city centers in many popular European cities are pedestrian only. Whatever you pack will follow you over cobblestones, staircases, and onto public transportation, and other countries aren’t always as elevator-obsessed as the United States. There’s also the ever-increasing chance of your luggage getting lost as the airlines iron out their post-pandemic staffing and scheduling issues. Stick to cabin-only luggage and pack a modest amount of versatile, neutral-colored clothing to save space in your suitcase. Going to a local laundromat and grabbing a coffee nearby as your clothes wash and dry can be a cultural experience in itself, so don’t be afraid to pack less to relieve yourself of the burden of heavy luggage. Tips for Trips Abroad
BY AMY HILL 118 | ForsythWoman.com
Although I’m no travel planning guru, I have learned a thing or two about making plans run smoothly when it comes to leaving the country. Here are lessons I’ve learned along the way that will save you time and energy during international travel.
TIP #2: PRIORITIZE CONVENIENCE OVER COST Unless you’re traveling for work, the idea behind taking a trip abroad is to have fun and experience novelty. I’m a firm believer in spending a few extra dollars every now and then to make myself comfortable as opposed to being frugal to a fault. While there’s a time and a place for frugality, it’s necessary to treat a vacation as such. While this doesn’t mean booking thousands of dollars’ worth of first-class airplane tickets, I do encourage travelers to pay the minute upcharge for little luxuries such as seat selections. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the middle seat for over eight hours regretting not spending an additional $45 to book a window or aisle seat ahead of time for comfort.
Travel Planning
The primary tool I use for travel planning is Google Maps. In fact, I don’t know how people traveled before Google came to be. Not only am I able to determine which neighborhoods I want to stay in based on the restaurants in the area and/or a neighborhood’s proximity to a city’s various attractions, but I can also use the street view function to take a virtual walk down the neighborhood’s roads to get a feel for a potential accommodation’s surroundings. In many situations, I have used the street view tool ahead of my trip to “practice” walking to and from my hotel or vacation rental to a certain location in order to avoid looking like a lost tourist (i.e., a target for scammers or pickpockets). What’s even greater about Google Maps is your ability to download offline maps ahead of your trip that help you navigate when you have no cell service or Wi-Fi – a situation you don’t want to find yourself in when you’re in unfamiliar territory.
TIP #1: GET FAMILIAR WITH GOOGLE MAPS

“And, I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents, Larry and Linda, my best friend, Megan and my former boss and best friend, Loretta!”
Kristina Ebbink was born in Ontario, Canada and grew up primarily in Southern California. A graduate of the University of California at San Diego, she worked in the travel industry until her husband’s career brought them to Winston-Salem in 1995. Living on the opposite coast from friends and family, Kristina discovered volunteer opportunities at The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem as a way to meet new people in the area. She and her husband ended up meeting a network of friends who became like family, and they have been involved with the company ever since. Kristina has worked, on and off, as the marketing director for The Little Theatre for more than 13 years and recently felt the need to focus on the heart of the organization, which has always been its volunteers. “I’ll never forget how welcomed we felt to both The Little Theatre and to Winston-Salem when we moved here,” said Kristina. “As the volunteer coordinator, I want to make sure that sense of community continues to thrive and grow.” When she’s not “doing theatre,” Kristina works with her husband, Kevin, who owns Compass Financial Services, and enjoys traveling, enjoying time with friends and family (who moved here!) and, of course, seeing plays and musicals.

HARRIS GROSS Harris Gross is the owner of Gold Leaf Productions (GLP). “I’ve always had a love for videography but never believed I could make a business out of it,” said Harris. “After going to school for a degree in construction management, I soon realized my heart would never be full unless I was able to create my own business and make my own schedule. I then took the leap to come back home and work with my father with our family business while starting GLP on the side. Gold Leaf Productions is a wedding and farm videography business. Highlighting farms local to North Carolina and filming the most madly in love couples all over. Fast forward a few months, I found out I was pregnant and was distraught not knowing how I could handle everything at once. I then took the leap and jumped into wedding + farm videography full time and have been blessed with so much business since then. If I hadn’t ventured out to taking my business full time, I never would have known how well it truly was going to do. It’s been almost a full year of running GLP full time, and I wouldn’t change a single thing!” In her spare time, Harris enjoys spending time on the farm with her husband riding tractors or out flying her drone to get unique and creative shots to showcase on her Instagram page.

RELATIONSHIPS CHANGE WHEN WE CHANGE As a recovering people-pleaser, it made sense that when I made a change this drastic, not all of my relationships would hold up. Some people are in a relationship with me for what they can get out of it. As I grow and set boundaries, some connections with others may not feel right anymore. But remember that people-pleasers usually attract those who take advantage of them, so losing them from your life is actually a positive.
Once I decided to pull the plug on making everyone else happy, I came down with a bad case of self-doubt, second guessing that ending a certain relationship was the right thing to do. It’s challenging to change, leave a familiar situation for an unfamiliar one…that’s the way most of us People-pleasersare wired. tend to be very sensitive to guilt and self-doubt.

CHANGE IS NEVER EASY
Ending any relationship can bring on feelings of ‘was that the right decision?’ but in the end, with a little distance, you will see that no longer being in that relationship that caused you so much anxiety is a good thing.
THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE Change is the only constant in life; we change our environments, situations, and circumstances and so do others. We aren’t static in our lives - some sort of change is always happening. For this reason, it is unrealistic to believe that our relationships won’t change; sometimes we grow closer to others and sometimes we grow apart. In the end, the perspective I keep is that sometimes it is necessary to end relationships to make room for connections that better align with our beliefs and stage in life. Being a people-pleaser is draining and you are always jumping through hoops for others, making their lives easier, all the while setting your needs aside. Remember, you are as important in a relationship as the other person and if the other person can’t see that, it’s not much of a friendship.

‘What Happens When I Stop Being a People-Pleaser?’

From as far back as I can remember, I’ve been a people-pleaser. If there was a meeting like AA for peoplepleasers, I’d be there every time they opened the doors. Yes, I am that bad, or was that bad. Growing up as an only child, I was always trying to make my parents happy, since most of the time they were arguing, I figured if I did everything possible to please them, from good grades, to not causing any issues at school or at home, life would be easier for us all. Unfortunately, I didn’t outgrow that need to make everyone, except me, happy and I took it into my marriage and other relationships. Anytime anyone was slightly upset or perturbed with me, I’d bend over backwards to make things right at the cost of myself. But within the past few years, I’ve put a stop to that and am now seeing the world didn’t fall off its axis because I stuck up for myself and did what I wanted to on occasion. So what happened when I stopped being the people-pleaser everyone had grown accustomed to? I am so glad you asked!
