hile summer doesn’t officially begin until next month, in my mind, it’s already here. The warm weather, longer days (aka more time for walks!), and a calendar filled with beach and lake trips through August have me fully embracing my summer-girl era. Being by the water is truly my love language.

This month is also extra special because my husband and I are celebrating our first anniversary! Marriage has been such a blessing, and we are absolutely loving newlywed life. Even more special, we share an anniversary month with my parents, who are celebrating an incredible 42 (!!!) years of marriage this year.

May also means Mother’s Day, and I want to wish a very happy day to my momma (KeeKee), my mother-in-law (Lyndsay), and all the amazing moms out there. It’s such a joy watching my friends step into motherhood (although I still feel like we’re teenagers, so how do they have kids already?!).

On the events front, we’re excited to host our next Girls’ Night Out at MidTown Café and Dessertery on Thursday, May 14th.

and 72). It was truly my favorite conference yet, and spending the day with 250 like-minded local women left us feeling inspired and full of ideas for 2027.

On a more personal note, over the past four months I’ve been working really hard to learn how to do a ring muscle-up. I’ve been sharing the journey on Instagram through my “ring muscle-up diaries,” posting a reel each week. What’s amazed me most isn’t just the physical progress, but how much the process has translated into other areas of life. It’s taught me patience, the power of a positive attitude (an underrated life skill!), and the (sometimes frustrating) reality that progress isn’t always linear. But with consistency, improvement becomes inevitable.

It’s wild how something that once felt completely impossible can, over time, feel within reach. That’s one of the reasons I love CrossFit so much…the lessons go far beyond the gym. (Though it is fun to see what this 36-year-old body can do!)

So consider this your sign: getting 1% better each day is far more powerful than staying stagnant. Time is going to pass anyway—you might as well use it to grow, whether that’s in the gym or beyond.

Dynamis Estate Wines has entered the world wine stage, helping lead the East Coast into a new conversation.

The estate was recently nominated for Wine Enthusiast’s American Winery of the Year and delivered two 95-point wines, the highest scores ever recorded for wines produced in North Carolina. Those numbers carry weight. Wine Enthusiast’s critics evaluate wines from around the world, tasting thousands each year. A 95-point wine isn’t regional recognition. It’s global.

recognized well beyond its borders. The Mother Vine on Roanoke Island, still alive today, stands as the oldest cultivated grapevine in the United States, a reminder that this region has always had the conditions to produce meaningful wine.

That history didn’t disappear. It waited.

When the property was first explored as a vineyard site, what stood out wasn’t just its past, but its potential. The elevation, soils, and rhythm of the climate suggested something more, a place capable of producing wines with structure, balance, and identity.

Matheson Worrell and Katy Kidd serve as winemakers, guiding each vintage with a focus on balance and restraint. Worrell’s foundation was built through North Carolina’s viticulture program and refined in Burgundy, where precision and patience define the craft. Kidd brings a complementary perspective shaped by fine-dining and advanced winemaking, with a strong sensory focus that helps shape wines that feel complete, not constructed.

Keeping It Real WHEN IT FEELS LIKE PUNISHMENT

Is anything in the whole wide world better than grandbabies?!

No one fills my heart with more joy OR keeps me on my toes quite like my twenty-one-month-old granddaughter, Hadassah Hope.

She exhilarates my days and creates cartwheels in my heart. But mercy!

I need a nap after chasing that energizer bunny all day! (Mamas and MiMis KNOW what I’m talking about!)

My husband says Hadassah is the most curious human he has ever met. He’s not wrong. That inquisitive spirit especially shows up in her fascination with water—any water.

Sinks, cups, puddles, and even…wait for it…toilets.

That particular aqua-addiction keeps us habitually shutting all bathroom doors. That infuriates this child!

We try to distract her, but nope!

When she encounters a locked door that she believes should be open to her, Hadassah passionately persists. Through tears, she pleads for help. She works that handle with determination to break through, with or without our permission!

If I’m honest, I see myself all wrapped up in that story. The doors that close in my life, the plans that fall apart, the dreams that don’t work out…oh, how they sting in the moment! It can feel like God is holding out on me; like I trusted Him, yet He didn’t come through!

In Hadassah’s mind, she’s sure our “no” is meant to hinder her. She can’t imagine in her wildest dreams that our “no” actually shields her. Though it seems like punishment to her naïve understanding, it’s protection!

Slurping toilet water is just not conducive to her digestive health!

Truth is, Hadassah cannot remain safe if we give her what she’s sure she must have. STILL…her heart feels denied.

Her mind feels confused. From where she stands, she simply can’t know what we know.

The closed doors are her protection, not her punishment.

The closed doors are her security, not her stumbling block.

The closed doors are for her success, not her setback.

What door is closed in your own life right now? We knock, we push, we plead, certain that exactly what we need lies beyond that door. The locked door leaves us frustrated, confused, even hurt—believing that something good is being kept from us.

Could it be that God is redirecting us away from outcomes that will work against us?

Closed doors can feel like loss, even heartbreak. But in time, we see that God knew EXACTLY what He was doing. His Goodness protected us from ourselves and everything we could not see coming!

If you’re in a season where things aren’t unfolding the way you hoped, it doesn’t mean you are forgotten or forsaken. If God is in it, He’s guiding you with high-level intel. He’s covering and caring for you in ways far above your pay grade and experience!

Sometimes God says “no,” not to hold you back, but to hold you safe!

Can we choose to trust the heart of a loving Father who sees the full picture—past, present, and future— and is always working for our good?

Can we believe the Lover of our soul

is steering us away from what was never meant for us and toward what is?

Can we thank Him not only for the doors that open, but also for the ones that close?

Because sometimes, the greatest blessings don’t come from what He allows into our lives, but from what He lovingly keeps out.

Closed doors are not the end of the story. They are often the beginning of something better.

And just like my sweet Hadassah, one day we may look back and realize those closed doors were never meant to bind us but were there to bless us and lead us into far better than we imagined for ourselves.

ost articles on inheritance focus on those leaving the assets behind, covering trusts, estates, and leaving a legacy. But what about the person on the receiving end?

Inheriting money can feel overwhelming, especially during an already emotional time. Here’s a few thoughts to keep in mind.

HIT PAUSE ON MAJOR DECISIONS Your first instinct after receiving an inheritance might be to act quickly. Maybe you want to pay off the mortgage or make some investments. Resist this impulse. Give yourself at least six months before making any significant financial moves. This allows you to process the emotional weight of the inheritance while getting your priorities clear. Park the funds in a high-yield savings account or money market during this waiting period. Remember, the money isn’t going anywhere, but hasty decisions are hard to undo.

UNDERSTAND THE TAX PICTURE Tax implications on inherited money vary widely depending on what you receive, so take inventory of everything before making moves. Cash inheritances typically aren’t taxable income, while inherited IRAs come with required distributions and tax consequences. Real estate and brokerage accounts get a tax benefit that resets their value to the date you inherited them, which can reduce what you owe if you decide to sell.

Understanding the tax treatment of each asset type shapes what you keep, sell, or donate.

MAKE INTENTIONAL CHOICES ABOUT EACH ASSET Not everything you inherit needs to stay in your portfolio. Maybe your aunt left you stocks in companies that don’t align with your values or risk tolerance, or the family vacation home requires more upkeep than you can manage. Go through each asset and ask whether it serves your financial plan. Some pieces might be keepers while others make more sense to liquidate or donate.

children’s boutique didn’t begin with a business plan, it began with a problem. Like so many moms, she found herself standing in the aisles of big-box stores, searching for clothing that checked all the boxes: cute, comfortable, and capable of surviving the realities of childhood. Too often, those boxes went unchecked. “I’ve always loved children’s clothing, but when I became a mom, I realized how hard it was to find pieces that were both adorable and durable,” Michele said.

Clothes that looked worn after a few washes, fabrics that didn’t hold up to playground adventures, and styles that sacrificed comfort for appearance left her wanting something better, not just for her own child, but for other moms, too. So she created it. Her boutique was born from a simple but powerful idea: a place where moms could walk in and trust that everything they see is thoughtfully chosen; pieces that stay soft, hold their shape, and still look new after countless washes.

Michele doesn’t approach her boutique as just a retailer, she approaches it as a mother, the mother of the boutique’s namesake, Gretchen. “It influences everything. I buy like a mom, not just a business owner,” commented Michele. That perspective shapes every decision she makes. From fabric selection to fit, from durability to ease of care, Michele filters every item through one simple question: Would I put this on my own child? If the answer is no, it doesn’t make it onto her racks. That mindset also helped her identify a clear gap in the children’s retail space, one that many moms feel but struggle to articulate. “There’s this divide between highend boutique pieces that aren’t practical for everyday wear and cheaper, mass-produced clothing that doesn’t last. I wanted to bridge that,” Michele stated. The result is a carefully

curated collection that balances style, quality, and affordability, without asking moms to compromise.

Spend even a few minutes in Michele’s boutique, and a pattern quickly emerges.

While styles may vary, priorities don’t.

“Comfort, price, and durability,” Michele said. “Those are the top three things moms care about.” And while price is always a consideration, Michele has noticed a shift in how moms define value. “They’re willing to pay a little more if they know something will last. It’s not about the cheapest option, it’s about getting something that’s worth it,” commented Michele. Comfort, especially for younger children, is non-negotiable. If an outfit is itchy, stiff, or restrictive, it simply won’t be worn, no matter how adorable it looks on the hanger. That’s why Michele stocks soft, breathable fabrics, including bamboo pieces that are ideal for children with sensory sensitivities. Nearly half her inventory is tagless, eliminating one of the most common complaints from kids. And then there’s the practical side of parenting… laundry, stains, and the daily wear-and-tear that comes with active little ones. “Moms love items they can throw in the wash without worrying, with bonus points if it hides stains and can be worn multiple ways,” stated Michele. While social media may inspire curated looks and picture-perfect outfits, Michele sees a different reality play out in her store. “Moms love unique pieces, but everyday wear wins,” Michele said. Today’s moms are looking for clothing that feels special without being fussy; outfits that can transition from playdates to errands to casual outings without a second thought. There’s also been a noticeable shift toward practicality. “More moms are focused on pieces that last, mix well, and can be worn again and again,” Michele explained.

Even as interest in sustainability and ethical sourcing grows, particularly among younger moms, practicality and price still lead the conversation for most families.

What truly sets Michele’s boutique apart isn’t just the clothing, it’s the experience. “It’s more personal and curated. Moms don’t have to dig through racks. They know everything here has been chosen with intention,” commented Michele. That sense of ease is something customers immediately feel. “They can come in, quickly find outfits, get help if they need it, and trust what they’re buying,” Michele stated. But beyond convenience, it’s the connection that keeps moms coming back.

“Moms appreciate being known. They want honest recommendations and someone who understands their needs,” said Michele.

For Michele, the most meaningful moments often come in the simplest forms. “One of my favorite things is when a mom comes back to buy more outfits because her child loves the one they already have so much,” Michele commented. It’s a small moment, but one that perfectly captures the heart behind her business. As a mom herself, Michele understands the daily juggle. She remembers wanting clothes that were easy, affordable, and most importantly, something her daughter Gretchen actually wanted to wear. That experience continues to shape her boutique today, offering children the chance to choose outfits they love while giving parents the confidence to say yes.

“You are just like your Mom!”

I truly can’t think of a better compliment to receive. And it’s funny how the older I get, the more true it becomes. I guess that’s inevitable, right? Becoming like the person who raised you?

My mom is full of passion in everything she does. Her excitement for life is contagious, and her commitment to always be learning is something I’ve always admired.

Over the years, I’ve had a front-row seat to what that really looks like.

I watched her care for my papaw—her dad—through dementia. It was one of the most emotional seasons of my life, but also one that deepened my respect for her in a way I can’t fully put into words. Her patience and compassion were unmatched.

And what made it even more powerful is that patience doesn’t come naturally to her—meaning every bit of it was a choice. A daily, intentional choice.

I watched her start a brand-new magazine from scratch at 63 years old. Sixty-three. Most people are thinking about slowing down, and she was just getting started. When she sets her mind to something, she is going to make it happen—come hell or high water. I am so proud of her I can hardly stand it.

But some of the moments that shaped me the most were the quieter ones.

She wasn’t sitting me down and telling me to be kind. She was showing me—over and over again—what kindness looks like in action.

As a young child, I remember a woman in her twenties who would come to our house. My mom would sit with her, listen, offer advice when asked, and simply be there. That’s one of my earliest memories of what it looks like to show up for someone.

As a young adult, I watched her walk through breast cancer with a kind of grace that never made me question the outcome. Somehow, she carried strength in a way that made the people around her feel strong, too.

As a teenager, I watched her do the same for another woman—someone older who was facing health, financial, and family struggles.

At the time, my mom was the busiest person I knew, building her business from the ground up. But she always made time. She answered every call. She brought meals. She supported her in any way she could.

And later, when I went through one of the hardest seasons of my own life—a divorce— she became my safe place. My constant.

My shoulder to cry on for months. They say a mom is only as happy as her least happy child, and that year, I know I tested that.

While it was incredibly hard for me, I can only imagine how hard it was for her to watch her daughter hurting.

So… am I just like my mom?

In some ways, absolutely.

In others, we are complete opposites.

But the older I get, the more I realize— it’s not about becoming exactly like her.

It’s about carrying forward the pieces that matter most. The way she loves people.

The way she shows up. The way she keeps going, no matter what.

And if one day someone tells me, “You’re just like your mom,” I hope I’ve earned it.

Because if I can be even half the woman—and someday, half the mother— that she is, I think I’ll be just fine.

BROOKRIDGE Life Plan Community A New Path to Couples Memory Care S

ince opening its doors in 1989, Brookridge — a Life Plan Community owned and operated by ThriveMore — has been dedicated to creating an impeccable senior living experience.

Always continuing to invest in its community, the 46-acre wooded campus will soon be home to an innovative option for persons with dementia and their families — as EverTogether Residence has a planned opening for early 2027.

“This is an innovative memory care solution that allows residents with dementia and their care partners to stay together in this new home at Brookridge in Winston-Salem,” shares Julianna Jones, Director of Communications. “Unlike traditional models of memory care, residents and their care partners will live together in a cozy and inviting home, but with full healthcare and support available for residents with dementia.”

The idea for this unique residence — the first of its kind — was inspired by a visit ThriveMore President and CEO Reed VanderSlik made to a support group for partners of those needing memory care years ago. The standard practice in senior living is that the person needing memory care support must move into a separate residence where that care is offered — so one clear message came from that interaction: Even if a caregiver knows their loved one is in (continued on page 30)

good hands, the separation is simply heartbreaking. One man shared that simple daily acts such as eating dinner together, holding hands as they fell asleep, and other sentimental routines they had established through the years were not possible with how memory care was set up. Reed began exploring ways to change that — which grew into this new residence format at Brookridge.

The EverTogether Residence will be a circular building made up of 12 homes, a central courtyard, and community area where the person needing memory care would receive support from trained professionals.

“From the outside, it looks like a traditional neighborhood street. Inside, each unit features a room that can be secured for the resident with dementia when the independent living partner needs to leave for a time. This room opens to the inner core, which provides access for healthcare workers to safely provide memory care services. These staff members will be consistent care partners, trained experts in caring for those with cognitive loss,” shares Reed.

Memory care residents and their care partners will maintain familiar routines and connection, without a clinical setting.

Knowing their neighbors are going through similar adjustments will also provide much-needed emotional support for all.

Honored recently with the prestigious Fluxx Award 2025 in the category of Leadership in Senior Living Transformation — Health and Wellness, USA — Reed hopes this innovative approach can become a blueprint for other senior living communities around the country. As word has spread, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially from those with first-hand experience of having a loved one in memory care.

“It would open up a whole new program to help people who want to be with their loved one — staying with their spouse instead of being separated from them,” said Nancy Pyles, a Brookridge resident whose husband passed away from dementia. Nancy said she would have loved to live in a place like the EverTogether Residence with her husband of more than half a century. Instead, she had to say goodbye to him each night because they couldn’t continue staying together.

“I didn’t like being separated from Richard,” she said. “We’d been married so long, and he was always there. And I wanted him to continue to be there.”

“The EverTogether Residence represents what’s possible when we listen to couples and design care around their lives, not their diagnosis,” Reed explains.

“It’s a place where love, dignity and belonging remain at the center, even as needs change. My hope is that EverTogether becomes not just a home for the couples who live here, but a model that inspires others across senior living to think differently about memory care and what it can be.”

Timely Lessons

I’ve never been good at goodbyes. I’m the one who: - Clings hard as I hug my sister at the airport, knowing that too many months will pass before we’re together again.

- Dismantles the holiday decorations simply because I want to be done with the inevitable feeling of loss, of something so good ending so soon.

- And yes, I am also the one who stays too late at the party for the same reason: I don’t want this moment to pass into the ordinary – not just yet.

As I sat with these reflections late one dreary winter morning, I came to see that I respond to relationships in a similar fashion, even those that have seemingly run their course.

Goodbyes and endings are hard for me. I marvel with some suspicion at people who confidently respond with, “Not me, sister. I live in the present – not in my yesterdays or my tomorrows. It’s all about the here and now with me.”

Well dang, how do they do that? My truth isn’t that simple, or absolute. It’s an amalgam of straddling yesterday, today and tomorrow. A one-dimensional experience of time feels unnatural, limited to me – more like erasure, or denial of the past, or fear of the future.

Okay, so maybe I am simply “in my head” too much. Guilty! But still, is there an understanding of this way of being in three time zones simultaneously? It turns out that none other than Albert Einstein is famously quoted as saying: “The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.” Thank you, Sir, for giving some credence to my experience!

And yet, those sage words aren’t much help in the day-to-day business of living, particularly how I experience endings. I’ve decided to work on this, whether it’s:

- A season.

- A friendship.

Or even:

- A sense of myself.

Instead of focusing on what is over or lost, my intention is to cherish what was, to be grateful for it and to look forward to what is to be. You’ve heard this sentiment before and so have I. But putting it into practice will take practice as I count on the plasticity of my brain to forgo well-worn pathways in favor of forging new ones.

For me, this was progress, as normally I’d immediately see a void and feel an absence. “The house looks so empty when you take all of that down,” my good man laments, putting words to my own latent sentiments. In that moment, I am reminded of my new resolve, responding, “It was beautiful, wasn’t it?” then shifting my attention to two emotional anchors:

True to my word and determined to do better, I started with the dismantling of our festive décor. Instead of getting stuck in that familiar feeling of loss, I “thanked” my everhardy faux garland and newfound twinkling lights for capturing the beauty and the hope of the season just past, reassuring myself that I would joyfully unwrap them once again next year.

- Gratitude and anticipation.

This mindset shift is monumental. It turns a sense of loss into thankfulness and an openness to whatever lies before me in the beautiful months ahead. I’m no physicist and certainly no Einstein, but how I work with the past, present and future – illusion or not – is something I can lean into in a positive way.

Daniel Patrick Robinson | Contemporary Figurative & Abstract Art in Oil This month’s featured artist, Daniel Patrick Robinson, creates unique work through oils exploring the beautiful chaos of the human condition. Drawing from a lifelong journey through diverse creative mediums, his paintings reflect a bold, evolving artistic voice shaped by decades of experimentation and expression.

How would you describe your work?

I think one of the main themes constant across my work is the juxtaposition of images showing the beauty and tragedy of the human condition.

What was your journey to developing your artistic skills like?

My journey was exceptionally wide ranging. I have been through many different artistic endeavors throughout my life including music, carpet art, stained glass, etching and, of course, oil painting.

How have you grown, personally, as an artist?

The more accomplished you get at painting, the more you grow and feel more confident to push the envelope. The more experience I have, the bolder I’ve gotten at trying new things that I might not have done early on.

What is your secret for carving out time to truly be creative?

Honestly, that’s sometimes hard for me. But, you have to prioritize making the time.

Put away the phone and the electronics, put on a record album and get into the zone!

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

I wouldn’t say a specific piece necessarily, but I feel great joy going to a gallery show and seeing and hearing the reactions to my work – sometimes without them even knowing that I am the artist, which is really special.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

I’m most excited about experimenting with different textures and materials such as cardboard as well as sand and paper on the canvas before I paint.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

Paint what you want to paint, and keep at it. We all have our favorite artists, but use what you learned from them to try to find something original in yourself. Don’t focus on making money from it in the beginning; do it because you love it!

Forsyth Firsts Lights, Camera, Action!

ROOTS OF VISUAL ENTERTAINMENT

Paul Ayers, as referenced in “WS Theater History,” notes that the area’s first public entertainment venue was located in the Sixth House, in Old Salem, just south of Fish Alley at Main Street. In 1843, several musicians requested permission from Moravian church leaders to convert one part of the building into a space for music practice and concerts. In time, this setting became known as the “music hall.” While the church elders imposed strict bans on what they considered frivolous activities, they did permit limited types of visual entertainment, many of which were lectures. It was Br. Christian Friedrich Sussdorf – a piano tuner and landscape gardener – who organized “picture shows” using a device called the “magic lantern.” Making their debut in the 17th century, magic lantern shows protected images – created from paintings, prints or photographs on transparent glass plates – onto walls using a combination of lenses and a light source – often kerosene – to project the photographic slides. These visual presentations typically featured stories with educational, humorous or moral themes and were enhanced with live music, narration and sound effects making for an immersive experience for the audiences. By the mid19th century, “movie shows” had become pretty sophisticated, including triple lens projectors; and the popularity of the magic lantern remained well into the 20th century until it was eventually replaced by the slide projector.

FORSYTH’S FIRST INDOOR MOVIE THEATER

In 1903, the Winston Elks Club constructed an impressive $35,000 headquarters at 442 North Liberty Street that incorporated an auditorium especially adapted for stage productions, including 50-foot drops with a collection of generic stage backgrounds. The

Elks Auditorium quickly earned a reputation as the finest theater between Washington, DC and Atlanta. Its grand opening on September 24th featured a vaudeville show that packed the house with more than 1,300 attendees and generated $1,100 in ticket sales. Over the following years, the Elks Auditorium became a popular destination for entertainers and eventually began showing moving pictures – illustrated songs.

Tragically, a fire broke out in the early hours of April 27, 1916, causing such extensive damage to the building that it had to be torn down. The loss of the Elks Auditorium was deeply felt throughout the city, as it had been regarded as Winston Salem’s finest movie house.

REBUILDING, RENAMING AND THE “TALKIES”

After the Elks Club decided not to rebuild their original theater, Sams, Moses and their Piedmont Amusement Company – already owners of three downtown venues (Elmont est. 1912, Pilot est. 1913 and Broadway est.

1918) – constructed a modern, fireproof Auditorium Theater on the same site.

The remarkable $100,000 building, with seating for 1,800, opened on January 28, 1918. About 10 years later, Winston-Salem experienced a cinematic revolution with the introduction of “talkies” – feature-length films with synchronized music and dialogue.

On Christmas Day 1928, the Auditorium Theater debuted the “Photophone” system with the film “The Spieler.” This innovative technology developed by Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant, Charles Tainter, recorded sound directly onto film for improved editing and synchronization.

Meanwhile, other local theaters – the Carolina and Colonial – adopted the competing “Vitaphone” sound-on-disc system, premiering their own first “talkies” soon after. Thanks to the Photophone’s

industry-leading capabilities, the Auditorium became one of Winston-Salem’s longest running and most influential movie houses.

TIME MARCHES ON

In time, Publix-Saenger acquired and renovated the Auditorium Theater and reopened it as the State Theater in 1930 with the premiere of “High Society Blues.”

The State Theater flourished for almost 20 years, but its prominence began to fade after the Winston Theater opened at 635 West Fourth Street in 1949 – a shift that ultimately led to the State’s closure in 1952. The building briefly served as the State Furniture Company in 1956 before being demolished in the early 1970s. Over the course of 60 years, 442 North Liberty Street was home to two different buildings, three theaters and a furniture store; today, the site is occupied by a parking garage. All of Winston-Salem’s historic downtown movie houses have disappeared, leaving only one: a/perture cinema, which opened in 2010 at 311 West Fourth Street. This independent, locally owned art house theater seats 230 and hosts more than 4,000 screenings and special events annually, showcasing more than 250 films each year.

Leadership and motherhood do not live in separate spaces. For many women, they show up at the same time, in the same breath, in the same day. Learning how to move between both without losing yourself is part of the journey.

When I say motherhood, I am not just talking about birthing a child. I mean the fuller picture. Nurturing, guiding, protecting, pouring into others. It shows up in raising children, but also in mentoring, leading teams, caring for communities, and simply showing up for people in a way that helps them grow.

A lot of women are mothering in ways that do not always get named.

A lot of women are leading in ways that do not always get recognized.

And a lot of the time, they are doing both.

Leadership calls you to be clear, steady, and decisive. Motherhood, in all its forms, calls you to be present, patient, and aware of what others need. One strengthens your voice. The other softens your heart. Together, they shape a kind of leadership that feels grounded and real.

But it is not always balanced.

Some days, leadership takes everything you have. Other days, caring for people, at home, at work, in your relationships, in your community, feels like more than you can carry. There are moments when you quietly wonder if you are doing any of it well.

That tension is real.

And still, you show up.

Holding both worlds is not about getting it all right. It is about being present. It is about learning how to carry what is yours without losing who you are.

Over time, your definition of success starts to shift. It becomes less about doing everything perfectly and more about doing what matters, on purpose. You learn that being fully present in one space sometimes means trusting the other will be okay until you get back to it.

Because whether it is leadership or motherhood, what you are really doing is helping people grow. And that kind of work matters more than we always say out loud.

hen Emily and Keith Davis take a rare quiet moment to reflect on the last two decades as owners of Fleet Feet in Winston-Salem, the emotions are real!

“It’s been 20 years of not taking our foot off the gas,” shares Emily. “That’s the only way small businesses make it. There’s pressure from so many directions – if you look too long at what your competition is doing and let the few negative customers take your focus, you lose sight of the bigger picture.”

Much has changed since 2006 when the couple opened Fleet Feet, and this milestone evokes both professional and personal observations!

“I turned 50 this year, and it’s weird to look back on your life, realizing now you’re the one getting older,” Emily shares. “You’re no longer the youngest person in the room. When we opened Fleet Feet Winston-Salem, we were on the younger side – I was 30 and Keith was 32 – and we were just getting started. Other franchises were older than us, some had prior longterm careers and were opening a store as they transitioned from 20 years of doing something else. We looked up to them because they were wiser, more experienced and had so many stories to tell.”

At the first national conference they attended – before even opening – Emily recalls a more experienced owner warning they would have days with no sales, months with low sales and would have to figure out simply getting by. She wasn’t wrong.

“We had spent two years saving so we had enough money to open our first store, and then took – what at the time felt like – massive loans to open our Reynolda Road location. We had a mortgage, student loans, (continued on page 50)

car payments and wiped out our savings to open the store. Our families thought we were crazy, but we were going for it! We weren’t going to let up until we made it work,” Emily shares.

In 20 years, Emily and Keith have had more than 350 employees, three different locations for the Winston-Salem store, sponsored thousands of local races and trained thousands of people for 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons. They’ve sought marriage counseling to learn how to work together, argue, resolve and maintain a Godly marriage (they celebrated 23 years together in April!) – and had three awesome children. Both realize they’ve somehow become the “older” people in the room – and yes, their combined persistence made it work.

“Fleet Feet is celebrating 50 years as a brand nationally, and when we go to a national conference in May, we’ll be one of those older franchisees. They’ll recognize us for celebrating 20 years – while the newer franchises will be looking at us. I hope what they see first is a marriage that glorifies God, but then I hope they see the commitment it takes to make a small business work,” Emily shares, reflecting on the ups and downs, tears, fights, navigating a pandemic and many, many celebrations!

“There were plenty of days I wondered if we could do it another day, trying to be business partners, then coming home to be spouses and parents at night. It was tough to ‘put away’ all the business stress,” she adds. “But, here we are! I’m so grateful to the Winston-Salem community for circling around our small business and to God for being there every moment.”

Exceptional Young Women in the Community: D’Khariyah Patterson-Stevenson

potlighting successful and stand-out women in the community is important to Forsyth Woman. With the help of LEAD Girls of NC, the Exceptional Young Women in the Community column helps spread the word about local youth and their positive impact on the world around them.

This month, we’re focusing on 13-year-old D’Khariyah Patterson-Stevenson. Named the 2025 LEAD Girl of the Year, D’Khariyah was chosen by her principal to join the organization in the 7th grade. Throughout her time in LEAD, she has learned to take accountability for her actions, speak up for herself and encourage other young women to use their voices as well. LEAD has also inspired her to not follow the crowd and to make wise choices.

Outside of LEAD, she is involved in Crosby Scholars and Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!). She enjoys dancing, volunteering with her church’s food bank and has aspirations of styling hair and pursuing her dream career in nursing.

Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams (LEAD) Girls of NC is Winston-Salem’s beacon of hope for local young women as a nonprofit organization supported by dozens of sponsors and grantmaking organizations, including The Women’s Fund, Winston-Salem Foundation, J.H. Walker Legacy Foundation and others. LEAD supports girls in order to propel them to succeed academically, professionally and personally through its numerous programs available. Young women involved with LEAD grow in confidence, social skills and leadership skills, setting them up to become successful entrepreneurs and fulfilled members of their community.

Although it was tough for D’Khariyah to narrow them down, one of her favorite memories in LEAD thus far has been visiting the photography studio of the inspirational Jodie Brim, who never ceases to make those around her feel energized and uplifted. D’Khariyah hopes to one day vacation in the crystal clear waters of Turks & Caicos, while relaxing on the beach and listening to her favorite musical artist, Rod Wave. She enjoys meals at Kickback Jack’s and Wingstop, browsing Target in her free time and watching movies like A Madea Family Funeral.

LEAD offers school-based programs at partner middle schools as well as community-based programs that are attended in-person in downtown Winston-Salem, available for any middle school girl. Topics covered through LEAD’s evidence-based curriculum include The Importance of Empathy, Dealing with Authority Figures, Exploring my Goals and Dreams and Connecting with Each Other. These sessions encompass awareness, communication, leadership and perspective – which LEAD touts as its four core fundamentals. According to the LEAD Girls of NC website, “After one semester with LEAD, 90% of participants recognize their good qualities, 87% feel confident about their future and 100% believe they can be entrepreneurs.”

When asked about what advice she would give fellow young women, D’Khariyah believes her peers can stand up for themselves and be their own leaders. She would like to encourage her peers to never let anyone get them down and to keep pushing through tough times. She looks forward to what her future holds, with her friends and LEAD team members expect a promising path ahead for her.

Aging Out The Struggle with Closure

uch like an overgrown toddler, I spend a lot of time asking “why.” Whether it’s because human behavior and psychology have always fascinated me or because I genuinely struggle to understand, I never cease to spiral into a mental quest to get to the bottom of why someone behaves in harmful and confusing ways. More destructively and often inaccurately, that spiral then snowballs into my brain obsessively trying to piece together how someone’s poor behavior reflects negatively upon myself instead of believing that their behavior reflects their own limitations.

On social media, you frequently see and hear women claiming “they always come back” after getting dumped by a man, spreading around the expectation that most exes will eventually try to reach out again for whatever reason. Sometimes this does happen, and while validating and vindicating in many post-breakup scenarios, it’s often too little too late. There’s nothing more anticlimactic than an ex you spent two years trying to move on from finally trying to come back five years later after you couldn’t force yourself to feel

anything for him anymore if your life depended on it. Wouldn’t that full circle moment have been much more poetic or satisfying during the throes of active heartbreak?

Unfortunately, some of the most painful breakups or failed dating attempts from my past have been left unresolved. In fact, even the abrupt dissolution of my long term friendship months ago still remains in figurative purgatory. For an overthinker like me, sitting with the unknown is grossly uncomfortable.

What do you mean I may never get an answer or explanation? What the heck am I supposed to do with that?

For as many questions that have gone unanswered for me lately, I would be lying if I didn’t mention the many times I have been fortunate enough to receive explanations, albeit painful ones at times. If you’ve experienced being ghosted a time or two, you start to greatly appreciate whatever crumbs of closure do get communicated, even if a bit direct or harshly delivered. A swift “I’m not interested” is nothing short of painful to someone as sensitive and self blaming as myself, but at least it stops the mental loop of “what if.”

Within the last few months, I have had three exes circle back around

out of the blue which was quite unexpected for me. Fortunately, one in particular was very kind and wanted to apologize for any hurt he caused me in the past, explaining that he was unaware of how to process emotions during our brief time together and created collateral damage as a result. He affirmed my value and expressed how he regrets not treating me better when he had the chance, as time showed him the rarity of my positive qualities.

In other words, this was the ideal form of closure that most of us dream of having, and I was very grateful to him for reaching out.

But, of course, I was well over the situation by that time and had much bigger emotional fish to fry, so the poetic ending fell a bit flat.

On the other hand, one of those three exes (who still lives in my head rent free for various reasons) went to great lengths to reach me after I tried to disappear from his life for nearly a year for my own sanity. Not having fully healed from the situation, I was warm, but still curious to hear what he had to say for himself. He expressed just how much he missed me and discovered I had moved away, but avoided mentioning the elephant in the room and vanished yet again when I mentioned how

badly his behavior hurt me a year prior without offering any apology. The only closure I was able to take away from that encounter was that nothing had truly changed. He was still behaving in dysfunctional ways, and I was yet again left to spiral in my emotions as a result of his patterns of emotional immaturity, cowardice and avoidance.

Closure isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. As great as you think it will feel to hear an ex boyfriend say he regrets losing you, closure typically doesn’t show up when or how you want it to. I have always resented how pop psychology emphasizes the importance of creating closure and forgiveness for yourself because I find that idea to be much easier said than done and that it disregards the inherent desire we have of reaching a just ending to a painful experience. But, truthfully, pop psychology may be onto something. Hearing an ex you still care about say “I miss you” is a beautiful fantasy until it happens and you’re still left standing with your same, tired suitcase of unanswered questions, asking yourself, “Is that it?”

Protecting Your Health It’s common to be wary of aggressive bears or poisonous snakes and spiders while hiking or spending time in nature off the beaten path, but the lesser known safety hazards of insects and small rodents often go overlooked when talking about wilderness safety. This month, I researched the most common diseases spread by even the smallest wildlife in North America.

individuals with Chagas Disease will continue into the chronic phase of the disease, which often takes years to develop and includes heart complications. While no vaccines exist, doctors can effectively identify and treat symptoms and complications from the disease.

Because mosquitoes carry diseases like the West Nile virus or malaria, and deer ticks are capable of infecting humans with Lyme disease, most individuals are aware of the risks of insect-born illnesses that are often brought to light by news reports. In fact, celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber have spoken out about how Lyme disease has affected their lives, increasing awareness of checking your body for ticks after spending time outdoors. However, below are two insect or animal-borne illnesses that often fly under the radar – no pun intended.

To prevent contracting Chagas Disease, secure gaps and holes around your home to prevent the entry of kissing bugs, avoid leaving windows and doors open and keep the area surrounding your home clean from wood, animal nests and other debris that may entice animals from frequenting your yard, as small mammals are often hosts for kissing bugs. Additionally, leave lights off at night, as light attracts kissing bugs as well.

CHAGAS DISEASE

Most commonly reported in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, kissing bugs have been found in 29 states but are not household names across the country. Like mosquitoes, kissing bugs feed on blood from humans, dogs and other animals, but unlike ticks, they do not latch onto their hosts while feeding. What makes kissing bugs not so sweet is the parasite they carry that causes Chagas Disease, which 50% of kissing bugs are believed to be infected with according to a report from Texas A&M University.

What makes Chagas Disease unique is that the parasite that causes the disease is not found in the saliva of the kissing bug; instead, humans are infected with the disease after the kissing bug defecates after feeding, allowing the parasitecontaminated feces to infect the human through scratching a wound or contaminated hand-to-mouth or hand-to-eye contact.

During the acute phase of Chagas Disease, humans experience symptoms like fever, rashes, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and body aches. Only approximately one out of three

HANTAVIRUS

Rodents are the culprit of spreading Hantaviruses to humans, which cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HRS) in North America, and less commonly cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Rats, moles and bats do not typically wreak hantavirus havoc through bites or scratches; interestingly enough, hantavirus is most often transmitted through aerosolization.

According to the CDC, humans encounter the virus by sweeping up or cleaning out rodent droppings or urine, which releases the virus into the air that is then breathed in by humans. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome symptoms occur one to eight weeks after coming into contact with the virus and include muscle aches, fatigue, fever, digestive issues, dizziness and headaches. Later stage HRS symptoms include breathing difficulties, coughing and even fluid in the lungs, potentially causing death in 38% of patients who develop pulmonary symptoms. Renal manifestations of the disease in the United States are uncommon but are found more frequently in Europe and Asia.

It is important to ensure proper pest control protocols are in place to limit your exposure to rodents in your home. While camping, be sure to seal food and properly dispose of garbage to avoid attracting rodents to your campsite.

You may be a businesswoman, finally in your stride. You’ve got systems in place, and opportunities are lining up at your door. Congratulations, you’ve entered the middle phase of your business journey! This is going to be the most challenging but the most rewarding season yet.

You’ve come too far to stop now, and during this period, you will experience so much stretching and growth that it’s going to shock you at how much you can handle.

Remember that you have God on your side, and He’s the best partner because He knows everything that you will face. Trust Him and seek his guidance.

THE MIDDLE IS A BLESSING Society tends to focus on humble beginnings and victorious endings. But, there’s the uncomfortable stretch between starting and succeeding that every entrepreneur must endure, which isn’t glamorous. Think about a few esteemed Bible characters like Moses, David, Ruth and, of course, Jesus.

Most of their development wasn’t written in the Bible, but the subtle cues are there. Moses was exiled from Egypt, but the Bible made sure we knew how long he was gone – 40 years (Acts 7:23, 30). David was anointed and slew Goliath, but did not become king immediately (1 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 5:3-4). Ruth stayed faithful to her late husband and mother-in-law before marrying Boaz, who placed her in the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-5).

And, after the story of Mary and Joseph losing Jesus in the temple (Luke 2:46), His daily life was unknown for 18 years (Luke 3:23).

After this gap in time, they conquered and triumphed over many odds! Do you think they were just being idle during that time? No, they were growing in wisdom and obedience. That’s what the middle of your journey is for.

MUNDANE IS NOT IDLE There’s a hidden danger in mislabeling growth as stagnation. The bookkeeping tasks aren’t fun, but you’re learning how to do it and what to pay attention to because you’ll need that vital wisdom one day. Mundane days may not bring the most joy, but they develop maturity, favor (Luke 2:52) and help you find peace with what God has assigned in that season. What’s most important during this season is staying connected to the Source. The middle is where you will be presented with numerous options and opportunities, and not all good

things are God things. Diligently seeking the Lord, as Proverbs 8:17 says, will keep you aligned and ready for what God has purposed for you.

SHIFT TO A KINGDOM MINDSET

Many entrepreneurs think of business growth in quantitative numbers – follower count, ticket sales and monthover-month revenue. This is fruit that lasts and outweighs all inevitable obstacles you will face in entrepreneurship. Shift your reflection questions from “What am I accomplishing?” to “Who am I

One day you will reminisce about what it took for you to reach your goals and your destiny, so while you’re in it now, embrace it! When you learn to love the process – the middle of your journey – you will experience God’s best and be an inspiration for others who are on the same path. So again, congratulations!

Grace, Grit and the Power of Purpose

Some places don’t just live on a map… they live in your spirit.

For Sandra “Sandy” Smothers, North Carolina was never simply a destination. It was a feeling shaped by childhood summers spent barefoot in red clay, chasing chickens on her grandparents’ farm and rinsing off with the water hose before dusk. It was simple living, strong values and a deep sense of belonging.

“My father may have left North Carolina,” she said, “but it never left him, and through him, it never left me.”

Though her adult life unfolded in Maryland, through career, marriage and raising a family, that quiet pull never faded. After retiring from a 31-year career with the Maryland State Department of Education, she and her husband began searching for a place to call home. After three years and countless visits, one final stop changed everything – Kernersville.

“We said, ‘Where in the world is Kernersville? But, the moment we arrived, something in my spirit said, ‘You’re home,’” Sandy recalled.

WHERE HOME FINALLY FOUND HER

In Kernersville, Smothers found more than a house, she found a community, as well. With its historic charm, family centered events and welcoming spirit, the town felt like a return to something she had always known.

From Spring Folly and the Honey Bee Festival to quiet afternoons strolling downtown, she embraces the rhythm of small town life. But, what resonates most are the people.

“They’re salt-of-the-earth folks. You can feel that they truly care,” commented Sandy.

That sense of connection turned a retirement destination into home.

remains deeply committed to service. “You don’t retire from purpose. You just live it differently,” Sandy stated.

She quickly became involved across Kernersville, serving on boards and volunteering with organizations including the YMCA and Kiwanis Club. Her role on the Kernersville Family YMCA Board of Advisors is especially meaningful, where she focuses on member experience and community wellness.

“The YMCA’s mission speaks to me – healthy mind, body and spirit,” Sandy said.

Whether supporting wellness programs or initiatives like “Bright Beginnings,” which helps children prepare for school, Smothers believes in showing up for others.

“Money fades. But, what you do for someone is what lasts,” commented Sandy.

A CROWN WITH A GREATER CALLING

It was at the YMCA that Sandy first learned about the Ms. Senior Forsyth County Pageant. Encouraged by friends, she stepped outside her comfort zone…and won!

“I was honored, but more than anything, I wanted to make Kernersville proud,” Sandy stated.

The title gave her more than recognition, it gave her a platform.

She went on to place as 1st Runner-Up in the state pageant and is preparing to compete again this spring.

Her message is simple – life doesn’t diminish with age, it expands.

“There is still so much we have to offer; it’s our experiences that matter,” said Sandy.

RESILIENCE WOVEN INTO EVERY STEP

Behind her vibrant presence is a story of perseverance. Diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 1983, Sandy has faced serious health challenges, including legal blindness and a bout with viral spinal meningitis that required her to relearn how to walk.

“And yet,” she said, “here I stand.”

During her recovery, it was an older woman who helped teach her how to use a walker, an act of kindness she has never forgotten.

“She showed me that, no matter your age, you always have something to give,” Sandy commented.

LIVING WHAT SHE BELIEVES

Sandy lives by her motto: “It’s not age that defines us, but our actions.”

Her days are filled with movement and meaning, from early mornings at the YMCA to church leadership and community service. She believes in leading by example and measuring life by impact, not words.

“People want to see what you do,” Sandy commented.

When asked to describe this season of life, her answer is simple: “Blessed.”

A LEGACY STILL IN MOTION

As she prepares to represent Forsyth County again, Sandy carries a message of possibility.

“It’s never too late,” she said. “Life doesn’t end with age, it evolves.”

Whether on stage, in the community or in everyday moments, she continues to inspire others to step forward and live with purpose.

AN INVITATION TO LIVE FULLY

In Sandra Smothers, Kernersville has found more than a resident; it has found a reflection of its heart.

“I plan to dance to the music and enjoy the journey,” Sandy stated.

And, in doing so, she reminds us all – the most meaningful chapters of life may still be ahead, waiting to be lived with courage, joy and purpose.

Conversation with Your BFF Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get any easier with age…what to do after a falling out with a best friend who really mattered. Not just someone you casually texted, but your person, your BFF. The one who knew your stories before you finished them. The one who felt like family or even better than family.

So, when things go sideways, harsh words, misunderstandings, silence, it leaves a different kind of ache. And eventually, the question creeps in: “Should I reach out and reconnect?” I am so glad you asked!

“When (and How) Do I Reconnect After a Friendship Fallout?”

THE ANSWER ISN’T OBVIOUS, BUT THERE ARE SIGNS

First, check in with yourself. Not the version of you that’s still replaying the argument, but the one that’s had a little space to breathe. If your first reaction is still anger or the need to prove your point, it might not be the time yet. But, if the sharp edges of the situation have softened, if you can reflect without immediately getting defensive, that’s usually a sign you’re moving toward a place where reconnection is possible.

Next, ask yourself why you want to reconnect.

This matters more than you think. Are you missing them, or just missing the comfort of having someone there? Are you hoping to repair the friendship or just ease the awkwardness of the distance? Reaching out works best when it comes from a genuine desire to rebuild, not just to feel better in the moment.

CAN YOU SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE?

It’s also important to look at the bigger picture.

Every friendship has disagreements, but not every friendship is built to last through them.

Was this argument a one-time clash or part of a pattern? Did you both contribute to the fallout, or did the dynamic feel one-sided? A healthy friendship that is rooted in mutual respect and care is usually worth the effort to repair. But, if the relationship has felt draining or hurtful more often than not, it’s okay to pause and reconsider whether reconnection is truly the right move.

If your heart keeps pulling you back to the friendship, that’s worth paying attention to.

And, when you do decide to reach out, keep it simple. You don’t need a perfectly worded message or a dramatic apology speech. In fact, the most meaningful first step is often the most straightforward.

Something like, “I’ve been thinking about you, and I miss our friendship,” or “I’d really like to ask if you’re open to being my friend again,” can

open the door without pressure. It shows care, without assigning blame.

wrong. It simply means you showed up with honesty and courage.

WHEN THE WORK REALLY BEGINS

Friendships are some of the most meaningful relationships we have, but they aren’t immune to conflict. What makes them special isn’t perfection, it’s the willingness to extend grace, to grow and, sometimes, to try again.

If they respond, this is where the real work begins. Reconnecting isn’t just about saying your piece…it’s about listening to theirs. And truly listening can be hard, especially if their perspective doesn’t match your own. But, this is where understanding grows. Try to resist the urge to interrupt or defend every detail.

This isn’t about winning an argument, it’s about rebuilding trust.

Of course, there’s no guarantee things will go back to the way they were. And that’s something you have to be ready to accept. They may not be ready to reconnect. They may need more time.

Or they may have chosen a different path altogether. That can hurt, deeply, but it doesn’t mean reaching out was

So, if you are wondering whether to reconnect, listen to your heart, but bring your self awareness with you. If the respect is still there, if the connection still feels beneath the hurt and if your intention is to rebuild rather than to revisit old wounds, it might just be worth reaching out.

And no matter what happens next, know this, you’re allowed to outgrow, reconnect or simply remember what was good and carry it forward. For most of us, including myself, my BFF is worth it.
