The View From This Side MARCH 2018 Right before we started production on this issue, my daughter and I, along with some of our best friends, enjoyed a long girls’ weekend in Cancun, Mexico. Our trip was coordinated by Jackie Ireland of Cruise Planners, and it was a marvelous trip! We had such a great time! We worried about making it to the airport since our trip was scheduled two days after our inclement weather in January! But we made it, and it was great to escape the frigid winter and spent a few days enjoying warm tropical breezes and fruity drinks! See pictures on page 120.

After some wonderful R&R, it was also great to come home to do what we love. And as we got into the full swing of March production, I began to think about “luck.”

What constitutes luck versus a blessing? March is synonymous with “luck,” but the older I get, the more I realize it’s not so much luck as it is hard work, commitment, and the support of the people around you!

I certainly can’t credit the success of Forsyth Magazines to something as arbitrary as “luck.” It’s a blessing, and I’m blessed by our team, our advertisers, and you – our readers.

And speaking of blessings – I have to give a shout out to my amazing son-in-law, Chris Eagle, who celebrates his 30th birthday this month on March 17th! I love you, Chris, and we are so happy you’re a part of our family! Welcome to your 30s!

When I consider the 13 years of being a part of the community and then see a cover story like this month’s – I realize I’m not alone. Talk about perseverance and commitment! The people behind Hakka Chow are a shining example of hard work in our community. Plus, they are one of my favorite restaurants! I hope you’ll check out their cover story!

BLEPHARITIS

Do you suffer from dry, watery, red, itchy eyes? Blepharitis could be the underlying root of it all. Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from chronic blepharitis. This condition causes irritation and inflammation of the eyelid margin, where eyelashes join the eyelid. If not treated, this condition can worsen and may lead to further problems, including styes and decreased vision. Blepharitis is quite difficult to manage because it tends to reoccur.

Blepharitis occurs in two forms: anterior and posterior. The anterior form affects the outside front of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached. The two most common causes of anterior blepharitis are bacteria (staphylococcus) and scalp dandruff.

Posterior blepharitis affects the inner eyelid (the portion of the lid that makes contact with the eye) and is caused by problems with the oil (Meibomian) glands. These glands help to release oil onto the front surface of the eye to aid in a normal tear film layer.

If this chemistry is disrupted, dry, watery, or redness can ensue.

Posterior blepharitis can develop as a result of a skin condition, such as acne rosacea, which leads to red and inflamed skin, or scalp dandruff.

The way that I explain it to my patients is that there is a normal number of bacteria that live on everyone’s skin surface; but in certain individuals, they tend to overpopulate and inflame the lids and lashes, resulting in clogged oil glands, dry eye disease, and chronic redness.

TREATMENT Treatment of blepharitis revolves around hygiene of the area. In most individuals, the bacteria are overpopulating and it is our job, to get this under control and develop a maintenance program to keep the bacteria in check. Depending on the severity of your blepharitis, we may recommend simple sprays to help kill the bacteria, or may perform other procedures in office.

BLEPHEX BlephEx is a new procedure to Summit Eye Care. This can help speed the process along and get the bacteria at bay. Performing BlephEx requires no medications and is a simple in-office procedure to help reduce the bacterial load, allowing for relief of your symptoms in a quick and efficient manner.

Summit Eye Care is taking the next step in 2018 to focus on dry eye disease and some of its associated conditions, such as blepharitis. We understand that dry eye is an epidemic and must be treated in order to prevent further damage in the future. Get control of your eyes, so that you can get control of your life.

Embrace Your Inner

Katie Marsh is a woman who loves princesses and fairy tales. “When I was a kid, I didn’t so much read fairy tales, as I devoured them,” Katie shared. “I constantly pretended to be a princess and played dress up every weekend with my mother’s makeup and old formal dresses. I spent hours upon hours watching Disney movies.” Katie is a lot like many women. She was raised on fairies and princesses, magic pumpkins, and fairy dust. And since 1937’s release of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,”

by Disney, little girls across America have loved the idea of being rescued by Prince Charming. Growing up though, they found life to be less and less fairy-tale esque.

Don’t you sometimes wish you could turn back the clock to the days when you played dress up and pretended to be a princess? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fairy godmother who could make all your fairy tale wishes come true?

Ladies, it’s time to embrace our inner princesses and make them work for us, even when life fails to live up to our fairy tale standards. Let’s take a look of some of the Disney princesses and examine some of the life lessons learned from each of them.

CINDERELLA

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Life’s not fair, and sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do.

But we still have a choice to make with our attitudes. We can either be miserable and grumble, or we can sweep the stairs with a song. Singing on tune is optional. But let’s agree to draw the line at being friends with mice – dressing up rodents is a whole other topic.

SNOW WHITE

The consummate example of why we tell our children not to take candy from strangers, Snow White is a great example of what NOT to do. Let’s not be gullible. How many women could have avoided pain and heartache by avoiding those with selfish motivations?

TIANA

Work hard. You may not be born into prosperity, but that doesn’t mean it’s outside of your reach.

BELLE

The heart matters more than the outside.

What we learn from Belle is that beauty isn’t found in a pretty face or a tough, masculine exterior. It’s found in simple moments of kindness and compassion. Long term, those qualities far outweigh physical attraction.

JASMINE

Money isn’t everything. Isn’t Jasmine amazing?

Despite being raised in a royal court, she wanted what was real, more than she wanted what was gold. From her, we learn the value of true love being more important than a lifetime of being rich-yet-miserable.

ARIEL

Don’t try to be something you’re not. The real you will always come out – it’s exhausting to pretend to be someone else. And for goodness sakes, if your voice fails you, get out a pencil and paper and write what you have to say if it’s that important!

POCAHONTAS

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Just as Belle knew that beauty wasn’t found on the outside, Pocahontas taught us that different doesn’t mean bad. It just means different.

Traditional Irish RECIPE: Soda Bread

When I first began baking, I was terrified of recipes that involved yeast. Traditional bread was simply too complex for me even to wrap my head around. Because of this fear I began to rely on quick breads, or breads that typically do not require yeast, to learn. Zucchini bread, pumpkin loaves, and Irish soda bread became staples for my weekend baking adventures.

These days I make Irish Soda Bread every St. Patrick’s Day. Its simplicity, and rustic qualities make it easy to prepare and easy to eat. Paired with stews or prepared as your breakfast toast, this recipe is divine, simple and festive!

INGREDIENTS

• 3 cups bleached all-purpose flour, plus more for your working surface • 1 cup cake flour • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda • 1 ½ teaspoons cream of tartar • 1 ½ teaspoons table salt • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted • 1 ½ cups buttermilk, at room temperature

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Whisk together flours, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt in a large mixing bowl. Work softened butter into the flour mixture with a fork or your fingers until its texture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. Add buttermilk and stir with a fork until the dough just comes together – do not over stir! Turn onto your work surface prepared with flour and knead, 12 to 14 turns.

4. Pat dough into a round, 6-inch loaf and place onto a greased baking sheet or in a cast-iron pot. Cut a cross shape into the top.

5. Bake until golden and when an inserted toothpick comes out clean, 40-45 minutes.

Remove from oven and brush with melted butter; cool to room temperature.

IT’S FUN & IT’S HOW WE KEEP HER MEMORY ALIVE

THE JOY TAKES OVER I remember her initial diagnosis and the year that followed, filled with doctor’s visits, hospital stays and fear. The fear of losing her was overwhelming but she needed me to be her strength. She needed me to be her voice. She needed me to be her advocate. She needed me in ways I have never been needed before and it was, I thought, too much.

In her final days, the staff at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter helped ease my fear. Fear was replaced with peace in the knowledge that she was not suffering. With their help, I was able to become her daughter again. I no longer had to be the caregiver.

I could just hold her in my arms and love her as she passed on.

The way they treated my mom at the end of her life touched me tremendously. Their capacity to love and care for a perfect stranger like my mother was a beautiful thing to witness. They are truly angels on earth.

The hole is always there – I miss my mom every single day – but I can now celebrate her life and I’m not sad all of the time.

One of the ways we celebrate my mom every year is by forming a team for the annual Hospice Hope Run. All of her grandchildren called her Mimi, and since her favorite color was purple and she loved butterflies, it seemed only natural to call our team “Mimi’s Purple Butterflies.” For me, the butterfly

symbolizes her ability to break away, be free, and fly away from the pain she experienced.

Hospice & Palliative CareCenter helped her with this transformation. Their mission is to provide compassionate care and they certainly lived up to that mission with my family. I had no idea of the depth of their services before my mother’s passing.

The care they provided helped her pass on with dignity and without suffering and they helped me to cope with the loss.

We miss her. Oh, how we miss her!

It’s been 7 years, and I still wish she could be here for all the little moments. My children were so young when she died, but I promised her that I would keep her memory alive. Participating in the Hospice Hope Run has been a way for me to fulfill that promise. I start preparing my Hope Run team at the first of the year so during that season she is in the forefront of all of our minds. We talk about her, we share our memories, and we have intentional conversations. It keeps her memory alive. But it also provides an opportunity to give back to an organization that helped her and that helped us.

By the time the Hope Run comes around in April, we find ourselves out on the course with so many others who have walked in our shoes. You can feel the hope. You can feel the joy. There may be tears in your eyes, but the joy takes over.

There’sno freelunch

We’ve all heard someone say, “There’s no free lunch,” or “You get what you pay for.”

Have you really thought about what these phrases mean?

During the holidays it is easy to rationalize overeating and over-indulging our sweet tooth by claiming, “I’ll just work out longer at the gym,” or “I am going to start walking in the new year because I got this new fitness watch or mobile app, so I can eat what I want now and the weight will come off quickly.” Yes, we can make bad food choices but that “lunch” will not be free because it will cost in health effects. One day of bad choices for many of us, unfortunately, becomes days and weeks of bad choices. The result – 20, 30, 70+ pounds of extra fat that takes time and effort to eliminate. There are many published studies that describe the health effects of excess body fat. Just do a quick internet search and you will be overwhelmed and terrified at what may be going on in your own body! One website listed over 50 health problems associated with being overweight (helpguide.org/harvard/ how-excess-weight-affects-your-health). And what about selfesteem and depression?

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Do you see a smile or a frown? Do you run from cameras or only do headshots in your “selfies”? Do you use shapewear to attempt to smooth and squeeze in your mid-section? Do you only wear long or ¾ length sleeves because you carry fat on your arms? Do you always seek out stretchy pants so that you don’t have to go up a few sizes? Have I described you in any way? If so, please know that I have been there, too!

Are you at the point in life where it seems the less you eat, the higher the scales go? Are the techniques that you previously used for weight loss no longer working? Does exercise no longer seem to burn fat for you? In fact, do you gain weight even with regular exercise? That is so frustrating, and I have experienced that in the past as well. You are not alone and this is not the end of the story.

There are many commercial weight loss programs in the marketplace. There are lots of weight loss plans available on the internet. These plans and programs can be effective for many people. So why would anyone pay to lose weight?

Another phrase I have heard many times is “You get what you pay for.” This phrase applies to weight loss as well. If

Youget whatyou payfor something is free, do we consider it valuable? Diet Center programs are not free, nor are they the least expensive of the commercial weight loss programs. MALE BREAST REDUCTION

Nothing makes men leave their shirts on during the summer more than “man boobs,” or what surgeons call gynecomastia.

“This is very common, and many times men are embarrassed to go to the beach or the pool,” says Dr. Leslie Branch, the newest surgeon at Forsyth Plastic Surgery. “Reducing the male breast so that it looks more normal can literally be life-changing.”

Dr. Branch says that male breast reduction usually does involve surgery, but often men can be back to a normal routine in just a few days. “We often use a combination of liposuction and tiny incisions, so the scars are minimal.”

I DON’T LOOK LIKE WHAT I’VE BEEN THROUGH!

My life probably looks a lot like yours, chasing hectic schedules that leave us limping a few steps behind. Never enough hours.

Never enough us. Never enough.

My frantic pace screeched to a standstill last March. First, my world landed on its head; then a tsunami leveled every semblance of normalcy.

I suffered an incident that shattered my hip socket and pelvis, leaving me with nothing but long days and even longer nights.

Every agonizing hour crawled into the next. I combatted physical pain as I had never known.

Three weeks later, as I lay flat on my back, I received a call in the wee hours for which nothing could have prepared me. My sweet Mama, who was helping care for me, died suddenly in the night. The torment in my body instantly turned to child’s play as the anguish in my soul overwhelmed every other pain.

In my most vulnerable season, I lost a fundamental piece of me.

In fact, there had never been one moment of “me” without her.

This fully-grown, fragile little girl grappled with the absence of Mama’s “love without limits” in the most chilling winter of life.

Each evening, feelings of hopelessness surged to high definition as the sun retired its shine. I wrestled against the heaps of grief trying to engulf me. Each time I attempted to change the channel in my mind, doctors’ dire prognoses broke in and reverberated in my head. The air of my soul hung heavy.

We inevitably find ourselves asking “Why?” when we hit hard places along the way. But where did we get the notion that we deserve a problem-free journey? Have you ever met one person (just one!), who lived such fantasy? It’s downright laughable when you consider it.

Life is a battlefield, not a playground. It’s all-out war because both Heaven and hell desperately want us. This conflict that rages internally is essentially about one thing: which voice we listen to. The one we choose will shape every part of our story.

Will we listen to the voice that persistently questions the Father’s goodness? Or will we attend to the voice that delights in us and seeks our good always? THIS, my friend, is where the battle is lost or won.

As the bitter winds of fear and grief howled through those dark days, the Good Father saw into my heart, spoke courage into my pain, and carried me until I could walk again.

I learned that fighting back on the inside is FAR MORE powerful than what happens to me on the outside. When despair tried to swallow me and dictate my course, I clung tight to the Rock that does not shudder with shifting winds.

Ironically, the more I spoke God’s unchanging words into my depleted soul, the more I realized it was the Father who held tightly to me. I was pulled close. I was loved. I was safe. I was coming out.

It’s been one year since everything in my world shattered.

One thing is certain – I don’t look like what I’ve been through.

Doctors concede that my recovery is nothing short of miraculous. I’m doing everything they considered impossible.

Others still try to wrap their heads around my miracle. I know with absolute certainty what saved my life: I believed the Father’s voice more than I believed anything else!

Hear me. Hell will keep you focused on what you’ve been through. The good Father’s voice will hold you through the bitter cold and carry you to the other side of this painful season. If you keep staring at your past, you will miss your future. Which voice will you allow to shape your story?

It’s time to rise from heaps of hopelessness. It’s time to believe God’s whisper so emphatically that you allow Him to hold you close and carry you until you can walk again. No matter how dire your dilemma, I promise, when your heart listens for the Father’s voice, you won’t look like what you’ve been through!

A Look into Downtown Winston-Salem: The Future

For the past few months, we have looked at the past and present of downtown Winston-Salem. Now, let’s take a trip into the future to see what’s in store for the City of Arts and Innovation.

According to the report Downtown Winston-Salem High-Rise Development Opportunity Sites, “a strong downtown core helps Winston-Salem compete with other communities on a national level” and “a robust downtown core lead to community growth.” Throughout the years, one can easily see the growth of downtown Winston-Salem and how the area has become a favorite among many.

In 2013, the City Council adopted the Legacy 2030 plan.

In this plan, a community-driven vision for downtown was mapped out. It stated continued development for the core districts. Some of the goals listed include: attracting young professionals ages 20-35 to the area, creating a supportive environment for families living downtown, and providing residential spaces for “new economy” industries. These industries are high tech, research and designed based and biotech businesses. As the City of the Arts and Innovation, the Legacy 2030 plan wants to accomplish enhancing public art and design throughout the city.

Multiple projects for creating new residential areas, office buildings, and more are scheduled for downtown Winston-Salem. Plans are in the works for renovating the 757 North Apartments on Chestnut Street, Hotel Indigo in the historic Pepper Building, and Bailey Power Plant. In addition, ideas for new restaurants, shops, galleries, and workplaces are being developed, allowing for more people to hopefully gravitate towards the area. Other places with ongoing improvements are the West End Historic District, Northwest Boulevard, North Winston, West Salem, Old Salem, Liberty Street corridor, South Marshall, Happy Hills/ College Park, and Southwest Marshall.

The study also explains that the city now has an “increased economic investment in arts and entertainment, architecture, design and preservation, parks and streetscapes, house, and personal service opportunities.” This means you can be on the lookout for new galleries, public art exhibits, shows, and much more.

Lastly, another investment is geared towards making downtown Winston-Salem more “walkable.” After all, who doesn’t love walking through the vibrant streets or the historic cobblestone paths of Old Salem? Bicycling, parking, and public transportation are other key aspects to be improved. Corridors are being established to connect downtown to the rest of the Camel City. Improvements to Business 40 are slotted to begin this upcoming fall. Road construction is set for the Peters Creek Parkway interchange at Business 40 near BB&T Ballpark.

Once completed, there will be a seven-lane bridge, new interchange loops, and a roadway from First Street to Fourth Street. After this segment is completed, the next big changes are to Business 40 from Peters Creek Parkway to U.S. 52, and from Main Street to Peters Creek Parkway. As of right now, these areas will reopen in summer of 2020.

Downtown Winston-Salem is a vibrant place that is full of life. Included in the area are multiple restaurants, retail shops, art galleries, parks, and places to live. More buildings are arising each year and the growth of downtown Winston-Salem is unstoppable.

Home Trends for 2018 I have been watching the home décor trends and what the industry experts predict, and would love to share what I have learned. Americans are looking for their homes to be restful and soothing, yet at the same time stylish. More and more people are interested in creating a refuge that is peaceful, inviting, and easy to maintain. They want to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Comfort and functionality are equally important.

Colors are across the spectrum this year with a forecast of lively colors such as sophisticated vibrant greens, citrons, violets, lavenders, salmons, blues of all shades and, believe it or not, corals. I particularly love transforming homes into a living oasis using shades of neutrals especially warm creams, gray blues, green blues, and teals - along with bold accent pieces. These shades are in demand by my customers. Gilded gold light fixtures and warm golds for plumbing fixtures are on the move into our near future. I have talked with other designers and they see yellow/gold also emerging as a very versatile color. Popping up with every shade from lemon-lime to sunlight yellow and citrine adds attention-getting appeal to any room. Customers want style that is casually elegant, glamorous, and classic. We see a huge trend with traditional coming back strong, lots of color accent updates, and clean lines with beautiful symmetry. Antique prints, local artists’ oil paintings, bench-made furniture of all tones of wood, and hand-painted pieces are some of my favorites.

We are receiving requests for wallpaper and wild patterns. I never thought I would see the comeback of wallpaper, but the young people love grass cloth wallpaper and bold patterns. The prediction by the experts is that murals, whether wallpaper or hand painted, are making a strong comeback. I saw some mural scenes at the Atlanta market of modern and historical French reproductions.

If you are planning to update your home with paint colors for the spring, I would suggest, as a rule, that you select a fabric or a paint sample in the daylight. Also, look at fabric at night under artificial light. It is important to remember that the shade will appear slightly different in each instance. Natural light coming from a northern exposure is a cold light and accentuates blue and violet. Natural light, like direct sunlight from the south or west, is a warm light and intensifies yellows, reds, and oranges while neutralizing blues and violets. Fluorescent light is a real killer for colors because it creates a bluish washed-out look.

I mean, come on, who doesn’t love a good deal?

As a small business, you want to stand out from the crowd by showing that you are providing competitive value for your customers while being a rock star at increasing sales. But how do you do it?

KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER AND BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR PRICING

I can’t tell you how many small business owners can’t tell me why they chose the price they did. Before you can give a discount or offer promotions, you must know what you can afford to do and what makes sense for your customer. You can create amazing promotions but make sure you know who you are selling to and why they buy from you in the first place. Every decision you make for your business should have your ideal customer in mind, while asking yourself a few questions.

Is this going to attract my ideal shopper?

Am I offering them something they will find valuable?

How will this speak to them and their needs?

DON’T BE AFRAID OF LOSING THOSE DOLLARS

The biggest mistake people make when offering promotions for their business is worrying that if they give a discount, they will lose money. This is not the case! In fact, it’s the exact opposite. (Of course, if you were giving away product like there’s no tomorrow, we’d need to have a serious conversation!) But, when you create strategic discounts for your customer it gets them more excited to shop and save. It’s a proven fact that shoppers experience a surge of endorphins when they save money. Endorphins make people happy and you know what happy people do? Shop more!

MAKE THEM AN OFFER THEY CAN’T REFUSE

Think about it. If you went to buy something and the sales associate shared with you that if you bought two items instead of one you would save ten cents, how would you react? If it were me, it would be a hard pass! Why would I spend more of my money on a second item to save a measly dime? People don’t need a deal for the sake of a deal – they want to feel like they are getting a bargain! So, make sure those “deals” are actually adding value to your customer.

SHOUT YOUR SALES FROM THE ROOFTOPS

You came up with a great promotion strategy. Now it’s your chance to tell the world! You don’t want to keep these deals a secret! Get on social media and start sharing. Take a few moments to create some fun graphics to display with your upcoming and current promotions and show your excitement over them. If you have a customer email list, send out a quick email giving them a heads up!

Also, make sure you have signage with your promotions in plain sight for customers at your shop space. You can do this in such an effortless way, just make sure it stays in line with your branding. Do something simple like hang small chalkboards up with your deals, and hand letter them with metallic sharpie or chalk. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

DON’T FORGET

Your number one reason for running promotions should be to help your customer see value in your product and brand. When you concentrate on that, increasing sales comes so much easier. Keep in mind that big sale days are the perfect time to snag new customers, not just for a day, but for life.

The customer service you show, and the reminders that their purchase means something to your small business, will make them a loyal customer.

The first time I reviewed Davie Tavern in Advance, I was so pleasantly surprised by my experience. Don’t let the name fool you. It’s a restaurant in every sense of the word, and everything is made from scratch. The food was great. The service was great. The atmosphere was great. Wonderful first experience, and over a year later, I continue to rave about the Bull Burger. I still say it’s the best burger in the area!

So with all that said, I had high expectations for my second review. And I was not disappointed! The primary owner of Davie Tavern is Allan Coats, a local entrepreneur; Allan’s primary business is actually in insurance. However, he’s assembled an outstanding team to oversee the day-to-day operations of Davie Tavern, along with the partnership from Corey Owens and Steve Hondos. Head Chef Mack Parker leads a talented group of culinary experts in the kitchen, without whom none of this would be possible, while General Manager Beth Chafin is keeping things organized and orderly on the front end of the restaurant. It takes a lot of talent to make Davie Tavern one of the best restaurants in the Triad.

While not located in the center of things, Davie Tavern is not inconvenient to get to. In fact, it’s right off the interstate in the Tanglewood Commons Shopping Center, a few doors down from Food Lion. Just a few miles from Winston-Salem, you’ll quickly come to agree that a visit to Davie Tavern is always well-worth the trip.

First – let’s talk about the bar area. As previously mentioned, Davie Tavern is not a bar, nor do they serve pub grub. It’s a full-service restaurant, and like many full-service restaurants, they happen to have a bar, which is fully stocked with a variety of craft made beers and highly rated wines from Wine Spectator.

The bar manager, Sam Wardlow, regularly features signature cocktails that are both creative and delicious. First up, the SEXY ALLIGATOR. This is a combination of vodka, melon, raspberry, and pineapple. Green, yes. Delicious, yes. We also tried the VALENTINE COCKTAIL and BLUEBERRY LEMONADE. While these drinks aren’t on the menu all the time, they were great examples of the seasonal and daily drink specials offered at the Davie Tavern. And by the way, if you’re a connoisseur of bourbon, you’ll definitely want to stop by!

Our appetizers for the evening were BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS and CORN MEAL FRIED OYSTERS. When it comes to onion rings, forget everything you know. Onion rings have the reputation for being heavy and greasy. These are light and flavorful – not even remotely greasy. Served with ketchup or ranch dressing for dipping, these are an exceptional take on a comfort-food favorite.

Oyster lovers – run. Run to Davie Tavern. The Corn Meal Fried Oysters are to die for. With a unique flavor of breading, these are oysters worth sinking your teeth into! They are served with a house-made Remoulade.

We also enjoyed a hearty bowl of Davie Tavern’s own SHE CRAB SOUP. Allan shared that when it’s announced this soup is available, it never lasts long.

After one taste, I understand why. The She Crab Soup is a cream based soup, flavored with sherry, and is, hands down, the very best She Crab Soup I have ever tried. They have customers who buy it by the quart.

Next up began the round of entrees. My dinner partners and I were in for several delicious options, including the VEGGIE BURRITO. I think this is one I’ll be ordering for my next visit. I love veggies to begin with, and this burrito was stuffed full of squash, zucchini, carrots, onions, and mushrooms. Served over a bed of rice, this was a huge portion and was wonderful the next day, too!

Steak lovers will love – and I mean LOVE – the JACK DANIELS FILET KABOB. All of the steaks served at Davie Tavern are dry aged, and what that means for a dish like this – tender excellence. This beef is brined in Jack Daniels and grilled with onions and peppers. Served over mashed potatoes with a mushroom demi-glace, and it’s nothing short of paradise on a plate.

Davie Tavern offers a weekly veal special, and on this particular evening, we sampled VEAL CHOPS WITH A BACON JAM CHUTNEY. Of course, any time you cook meat on the bone, it’s more flavorful, and anytime bacon is involved, it’s better. So this was a decadent plate, served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

I’ve mentioned MASHED POTATOES twice now and let me stop right here to say – these are the mashed potatoes that are reminiscent of the creamy goodness that your grandmother made. These are potatoes at their finest.

Those mashed potatoes were also part of the next entrée – the TUESDAY NIGHT STEAK SPECIAL. In this case, it was a sirloin. Sirloins have a bit of a reputation, but the culinary experts at Davie Tavern know what they are doing. This is a huge serving, and it looks more like a cut of filet mignon.

It’s tender and flavorful. A serving of steamed veggies was the perfect accompaniment.

The last time I reviewed Davie Tavern, I had the opportunity to taste one of their house made cheesecakes. And since they change their cheesecake flavor often, you never know what you can expect. But I can promise you this – you won’t be disappointed. On this occasion, I sampled BANANA PUDDING CHEESECAKE. Let me sum it up this way: Every. Southerner’s. Dream. Sweet, creamy, fluffy, not heavy.

Absolute heaven.

For the peanut butter lovers out there, you’ll be torn. I want to encourage you to try the cheesecake, but I also want you to sample their PEANUT BUTTER PIE. I think the best option is probably to just order both. The peanut butter pie is like none other. The word I’m searching for is Ah. Maz. Ing. Don’t forget, Davie Tavern is an excellent resource for local catering needs. Everything from a business lunch to wedding reception and everything in between! Davie Tavern can cater events for up to 400. It’s a wonderful (and reliable) catering service that your guests would love!

Davie Tavern opened in 2016 and is quickly gaining a reputation for excellence. Don’t miss out on the best-kept secret in the area. Make sure you tell them that Rosey sent ya!

For years people have focused primarily on market returns, and perhaps even tried to time the market. Some have been successful and some have not. A better approach may be financial planning where you focus on your goals, not just on returns.

The concept of financial planning is foreign to many. Yes, it involves your investments, allocations and measuring your level of risk, but it involves so much more.

The important aspects of comprehensive financial planning include looking at your assets, liabilities, protection (insurance coverage), income, expenses and your life goals. These values help develop a picture of your cash flow, cash reserves, net worth, taxes, retirement, projections, and estate.

You may have additional goals of educating your children, vacations, a second home or a new vehicle. Since there are only so many dollars to go around, it is important that the right amount of money is allocated to each goal. This allows you to use your dollars in a more efficient manner.

When you have a plan, you may realize that you are on track or ahead of reaching a particular goal, and can commit surplus dollars for other goals where a shortage is indicated.

During good and bad markets, focusing on your goals may keep you from making bad investment decisions. During the down market in 2008, many clients questioned whether they were invested properly.

Granted, part of this was due to fear of the market at that time and what would happen in the future. Because they had a financial plan, however, I could show them that based on their goals, expected long-term return averages, and the prospect of inflation, they were still on track to meet their goals. For retired clients, I was able to show them that they

still would have sufficient dollars to continue to provide for their needs in retirement. Having a plan also helps the advisor pick investments that are appropriate for your goals.

It takes away the “do it yourself” or, as I have often called it, the “shotgun approach” to investing. Selecting investments due to performance is important, but just as important is the selection of investments that help mitigate downward risk. Believe it or not, sometimes a less aggressive investment may perform better in the long run due to less extreme ups and downs in price along the way.

An underserved area that we often see in others’ financial plans is the lack of insurance planning. This could be attributed to the fact that many people do not understand the importance of insurance in their financial plan. For example, you might be planning for your retirement or paying off your home.

A death, disability or long-term care event could lead to your family using dollars for expenses that had been set aside for your long-term goals. A well developed and calculated plan will tell you how much insurance you actually need for this coverage.

Planning also helps you decide whether you can add charitable giving to your goals. If your plan indicates you have more than adequate dollars for your retirement, then you might be able to share some of your wealth while living, or plan an appropriate strategy for passing on your assets at death.

As you can see, comprehensive planning does take work. However, a sound financial plan can also lead to a more confident and less stressful life. Working with competent professionals, such as your financial, tax, and estate advisors, may make things easier both now and in the future.

I’ve seen dead before – and she was cold. She had that look. Lifeless.

No movement. Her eyes were closed. I sat on the steps inside the house. Two of my young sons, Jordan and Jamesen, sat there with me as they worked on her…

The doctor came into the hospital waiting room and said, “I am sorry to inform you there was - nothing we could do…” I went back to where she was – hopes, dreams, aspirations – what I was to become yesterday, today and beyond…lying on the table with a sheet across her…

At that point in my life, everything in my existence changed forever.

I questioned God. As a Special Agent with the U.S. Department of Justice fighting the war on drugs, I was highly trained to evaluate complex situations, gauge what actions needed to be taken and come to life altering decisions in short periods of time.

With everything in me I could not deduce what had happened with my wife.

Days later an answer came in the mail in the form of a death certificate. I could not understand: METHADONE TOXICITY. I felt like I had the wrong death certificate. My loving, beautiful wife. A professional woman. A devoted wife and amazing mother. This document couldn’t be hers. I looked at the name on the death certificate – CLEMENTINE KIMBROUGH. I examined again the cause of death – METHADONE TOXICITY. Was it an accident, a misprint or did I just not know?

The methadone toxicity that took the life of my wife was indeed an opioid overdose. The opioid epidemic in the United States of America is snatching lives from families at an alarming rate. The truth is, this debilitating crisis has no respect for age, race, socioeconomic status or educational level. It is invading and gripping families from all walks of life. Without question, we must be aggressive in our approach to eradicating this problem. It is key that we acknowledge there is a problem and bring awareness through education and training, remove the stigma of shame and embarrassment and galvanize expertise and resources. We must come together to have an immediate and lasting impact.

For some reason, I was ashamed. I dared not tell my family and friends that my wife died from an overdose. As time passed, I began to think and know that there were always signs, but I did not notice them initially. The love of my life, my wife, was suffering in silence.

She was dealing with something that disturbed her deeply and I had no idea. When I look back over my life, I recognize that all the signs were there, I just did not want to see them. While I was fighting the drug war, there was a war going on in my home; I had no idea the effect it was having under my own roof. If I am completely honest (as with many whose families struggle the way my family has), looking back on that tragic day, all the signs were there, I just ignored them.

While trying to make sense of the silence and the non-involvement, like many things in life where we are uncomfortable, we have a tendency to hide them or place them in the closet. Thirteen years later, I am truly of the belief that with this epidemic we must remove the shame, the guilt and the blame from it. We have to give both the addicted and their families the comfort, support and education needed to deal with it directly so that they can overcome it.

Bringing our resources together and finding ways to address this issue is the only way we will reclaim our families and our communities. Every day in North Carolina this tragic scene is being played out in someone’s household, in someone’s life. The question has been asked of me, why are you willing to talk about this years later? The more I have learned about this epidemic, the more I have come to realize that I have a role to play: I am a resource. I have a moral obligation to speak and share my experience in hopes that it

encourages someone that may be struggling alone. Whether they are the person suffering or the family of that individual, it is not necessary to struggle alone and die in darkness.

While it is painful to share and talk about what could have been and what should have been, if either my wife or I had acknowledged the issue, had the stigma of shame and guilt been removed and had we accessed the resources available, I would likely be writing a different story today. My family and I have shared and talked about this. Our hope is that by offering our story we can change the atmosphere concerning this opioid epidemic, and thus change the outcome for it, not only in this county, but in this country.

There is no shame in being a victim of this disease. There is no harm in saying that I need help.

When I look back over how it impacted my household and how it affected my wife, there are things I should have paid more attention to. Many of us did not see what was going on until it was too late.

Whether we see it coming or we don’t – we have the resources and everything we need if we deal with it from a holistic point of view.

The truth is, we need EVERYBODY – all hands on deck. People need access to resources and together we must make sure they get them. Health departments, mental health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, law enforcement, teachers, trainers, pastors, medical professionals, preachers, mothers, survivors – we need all hands to be present and working intentionally. This I know from experience: what is a problem in someone else’s house today, could surely be a problem in your house tomorrow.

At the time when my wife passed, because of my ignorance of this illness, my lack of knowledge of this addiction, I was ashamed to discuss it. So when people asked me what the cause of death was, I never told them the truth. I would tell them my wife died from an aneurysm. It is amazing that even in death, we want to maintain respect and decorum. We even want the cause of death of be respectable. Continuing to cover and hide what is tearing our homes apart does not maintain respectability; it allows this epidemic to continue to run rampant and snatch lives too soon.

As I look back, I embrace the role I must play going forward. I must be an advocate, a champion for the cause of better treatment and better research. I must be a cheerleader for those who can’t cheer any more, a runner for those who cannot walk, a fighter for those who cannot fight. For those that are still struggling, we must become a help mate until they can help themselves again.

As a retired special agent for the U.S. government, the primary and lead agency responsible for fighting this thing called the drug war – this war was raging in my home for years and even I overlooked the signs. What I have concluded is that there is a price to pay for silence and absence. We must speak. We must be present. We must start by providing HOPE – Helping Other People Every day. Every day we are losing lives and every day we must be diligently doing something to help our fellow family, friends and community members.

I have sat in meetings, talked to friends and family members, connected with military who still struggle, conferred with experts – doctors, lawyers, politicians. We all have our thoughts on how to deal with this epidemic. It is a must that we sit down at the table together to prevent other families from experiencing what my family continues to live. My wife Clem was a beautiful soul who held our family together in love, and impacted everyone she came into contact with as a trauma certified registered nurse. I am certain she will be pleased that her legacy will be expanded as we share our story to remove the pain and suffering of others; she did it in life, and now in death.

Spring 2018 Fashion Trends from NY Fashion Week & How to Utilize Them in Your Wardrobe

I don’t know if you’re like me, where sometimes you look at Vogue magazine and the NY Fashion Week photos and think, “Who the heck would wear that?”

Well, the answer is truly “Only the model on the runway.” This is how it’s supposed to be. NY Fashion Week and runways around the world are meant to be over the top and impractical.

Designers get more press and attention when their looks are overdone and almost dream-like. As consumers, we are then encouraged to take those looks and put our own spin on them.

Most of the time this means muting the trend the designers are showcasing, and incorporating it into our own closets in a smaller way.

Here are the trends from 2018 NY Fashion Week and how I plan to incorporate them into my own wardrobe.

1. FANCY JEANS.

I am actually all over this trend. I have loved “fancy” jeans for a while. You may be asking yourself, “What are fancy jeans?” Well, they are just that…jeans but a little fancier. The runway had jeans painted in abstracts all over the denim with rhinestones and, to be honest, not something anybody would wear out of the house. I plan on incorporating this by purchasing a pair of denim with a few extra embellishments on them (think fringe on the hem or pearls near the pockets).

2. RED, WHITE & BLUE.

Sorry, NY Fashion Week but this trend is not for me.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it! Red, white and blue Americana feels were everywhere in NY. I personally cannot wear red because of my skin tone and only feel it’s appropriate to wear red, white and blue on the 4th of July. Sorry, not sorry.

3. ‘90S IS BACK, ANORAK STYLE.

Another trend I can get behind but in a smaller way.

The runways had floor length anorak jackets draping the models. I’m not about a plastic trench coat.

However, I am all about a hip-length rain jacket that’s brighter and more fun.

4. BRIGHT, SATURATED HUES.

Yes! This makes me happy because I truly believe bright colors flatter everyone. Muted colors have their place in our closets, but so do bright colors. Fashion Week had models strutting their stuff in 4-5 different bright colors. I don’t see myself doing it to that level.

Instead, I’ll choose a bright, hot pink silky button down to add to my jeans and wedges for the spring.

5. MIXED PRINTS.

This can be either really good or really bad. I’ve talked about mixing patterns in this column before, but the key is the scale. If you mix all large-scale patterns together, you’ll look almost like the comic section of the newspaper.

Instead mix 1 large pattern with a smaller-scale pattern. For example, gingham skinny pants with larger flowered patterned sleeveless shirt (both in the same color scale).

6. SATIN & SHINE.

Again, another trend that can be wrong really fast. Satin is beautiful but it can cling in all the wrong places and we don’t want that. Instead of choosing a satin dress or satin pants, choose a drapey/flowy satin button down or a tank top. Make sure you size up to allow for the flowy effect and your skin doesn’t cling to the satin material.

Laura Henderson recently learned that she is part Irish. “Through the help of Ancestry.com and FindAGrave. com,” shared Laura, “I have traced my grandfather’s side of the family back to my 24th great-grandfather who was born around 1150.” Laura spent hours studying the history of her ancestors and learned that, though they were originally from Hertfordshire, England, her 24th great-grandfather was the first to arrive in Ireland, and from there, his son was born in Dublin in 1180.

“For the next 550 years,” she said, “my ancestors lived and died in Ireland before my 8th great-grandfather came to America in 1701 and died in Virginia in 1730.”

We all want to know where we came from, but for those who discover Irish roots, it becomes a deep longing to know more.

If you suspect that you’re Irish, obviously the best test is going to be a DNA test from Ancestry.com. For $99, a simple saliva swab can reveal what percentage of ethnicity your DNA is made of. For

many, this is a simple way of finding out the background without spending hours poring over historical records and documents, trying to trace long-dead relatives and where they may have lived.

Laura considers the research to be half the fun, but says if you want a simple answer without the details, the DNA test is the quickest way to get the answer.

When you learn about your Irish heritage, another aspect of this newfound knowledge is sharing it with the rest of the family! “When I learned my family roots extended all the way to Ireland, I went to Facebook to share the news, and several distant cousins were as excited as I was,” said Laura. “No one knew there was an Irish heritage and it was exciting to share the details of my discovery.”

The next thing about learning you have Irish roots is to actually learn what region of Ireland your family is from. Laura shared, “My research shows my ancestors lived in Dublin and Kilkenny.

It’s been an interesting lesson in history to study these two cities. For instance, the question of why my 24th greatgrandfather left England to begin with is answered through my homework on Dublin’s history. The Anglo-Normans took over Dublin in the 1170s, and many Welsh and English people came to

the city during that time period. This was due to a political overtaking via the King of England, and it coincides with what I know of my ancestors through other historical research.”

To learn about Irish roots is an exciting thing. Beyond the history of the country, Ireland is known for the beauty of its emerald green countryside; beer drinkers get excited about Guinness; the country has influenced literature; and Celtic music is awesome. Ireland gave us U2 and the Riverdance. And for the sports fans – rugby, soccer (or to the true Irish, football), and horse racing.

Downsize, Upsize, Right-size Downsizing seems to be a buzz word I have heard many times in the last several years. Having helped several clients do just that by helping them decide what pieces of furniture would fit into their new place, helping purchase new pieces, choosing updates for the new house, or placing furniture and hanging pictures once they moved. Many empty-nesters or newly retired folks are beginning to think about the possibility of downsizing.

I can’t imagine my grandparents or even my parents ever having this thought. They built a house and lived in it their entire lives. My mother still lives in the house she and my dad built over 70 years ago. Like my family and possibly yours, the property they live or lived on is our family ‘home place.’ Our society today is more mobile, and it is highly unlikely you will stay in one house…or one place for life.

While you may want to downsize because you no longer need as much space, you want less home maintenance, you want to free up your cash flow or have more time to travel and enjoy life, many are choosing to upsize or right-size. Yes, there are many good reasons to downsize, but please consider the cost of selling and the cost of moving…..it may be more costly to downsize.

Many are choosing to upsize, whether it’s for selfish reasons such as they feel they have worked hard all their lives, their children are grown, and they want a larger home with all the bells and whistles, and they can now afford it, or they are having to accommodate aging parents or adult children. They may also be considering upsizing because they need more space when their kids and grandchildren come to visit. Many retirees or empty-nesters are very active and want to live near activities and choose to live in a community geared to the activities they love, and it may cost more to live there than their present house.

Right-sizing may be the best option. People often love their homes and neighborhoods and don’t want to move because of the memories made there with their families and want to find ways to stay put. With a few updates, improvements and modifications, right-sizing may cost less than moving, and allow people to age in place.

Any of these choices need to be made wisely when the time comes to consider upsizing, downsizing or rightsizing. There are pros and cons to any of these options I have mentioned.

Women & Sleep Apnea

How valuable is a good night’s rest? Can you really put a price tag on it? For so many women, demands on their time have long-term effects on their health, and in turn, their sleep. It’s hard to be everything to everyone when you can’t get enough rest at night! That’s why a recent study from the Society for Women’s Health Research is so important.

ABOUT THE STUDY.

According to the study, there are several key sleep challenges that women face throughout their lives including hormonal challenges, pregnancy and early parenthood, the impact of sleep on fertility, and menopause. The study also addresses types of sleep and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, hypersomnia, shift work sleep-wake disorder, and parasomnias (which are abnormal movements or behaviors during sleep). The impact of these sleep disruptions has a tremendous impact on a woman’s health and overall well-being, including heart disease, diabetes, mental health, cancer, pain, and cognitive decline.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

The Mayo Clinic defines sleep apnea as “a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly, and you feel tired even after a full night’s sleep.”

HOW CAN I KNOW IF I HAVE SLEEP APNEA?

The study has determined that one in five women have sleep apnea, yet 90% of them are undiagnosed.

With so many undiagnosed cases of sleep apnea, it is important to look for potential clues and communicate those to your doctor so that proper treatment can be determined. Without treatment, long-term health issues can occur and may prove to be detrimental to a woman’s life.

• NIGHTTIME CLUES: o Frequent or loud snoring, gasping, or snorting sounds o Difficulty falling asleep and frequent awakenings o Restless sleep and changes in dreaming o Frequent bathroom visits during the night o Nighttime heartburn

• DAYTIME CLUES: o Depression, anxiety, irritability, or impatience o Feeling tired, drained, or lacking energy o Feeling sleepy, or even falling asleep at the wrong time and place o Forgetfulness, fogginess, fuzzy thinking, and trouble with focus and concentration o Being accident prone Being overweight or having hypothyroidism are contributing factors to sleep apnea. Also, if other members of your family have it, you are more at risk for it, too. Those who have polycystic ovary syndrome or those who have entered menopause are also at greater risk.

WHY IS KNOWING THIS IMPORTANT?

Untreated sleep apnea can create so many long-term health problems.

There is a huge concern in the field of Sleep Medicine that many General Practitioners are not recognizing sleep apnea as a possibility, and simply diagnosing women with depression or something else. However, given a proper diagnosis, certain conditions may be avoided with treatment.

A Woman Reborn

In 2015, I was pushing 300 pounds and busting out of a size 20.

I was incredibly stressed and anxious, and eating to appease my feelings, thinking that with every forkful of pasta I was going to feel less stressed. Every spoonful of ice cream was supposed to make me happy. I would get out of breath just by walking from the kitchen to the bathroom. I was a hot mess. I was on blood pressure medicine, had high cholesterol, and knew I was at risk for heart disease and stroke.

My niece helped to change all that. I never liked wearing a bathing suit, but in 2015 I was visiting family, and we decided to all go to the pool. That afternoon, I recall sitting on the side of the pool dangling my feet in the water when my 6-year-old niece said, “Aunt Gail, do you know who you look like?”

Now, anyone who has ever been overweight knows that a question like that makes you feel incredibly vulnerable. However, despite the feeling of angst in the pit of my stomach, I said, “Who?” “Ursula, from The Little Mermaid,” she said.

I closed my eyes and pictured the fat, grey, octopus-like monster, and it made me want to cry. This is how she saw me, likely how most people saw me. Everyone but me.

I realized that I didn’t want to be fat anymore. I had that same thought almost daily for decades, but a few days before, my friend Frann had a heart attack and we didn’t know if she would survive. Frann was just a few years older than me, and I knew in my heart that I was a ticking time bomb.

As the weight started to melt off, I was even more motivated and would eliminate certain high fat/ high-calorie foods from my diet. I would also kick up my workout routine.

I lost 30 pounds and was surprised folks didn’t notice it. Then I lost 50 pounds and my kids told me how proud they were of me. At 75 pounds, I bought some new workout clothes.

When I lost 90 pounds, I bought running shoes in the most obnoxious color, and I wore them with the pride of a woman reborn. At 95 pounds, I cleaned out my closet and replaced my size 20 jeans with size 10s.

I’ve lost well over 100 pounds and over 39% of my body fat. The joy I feel in my heart is

greater than any purchase or any material gift.

I gave myself the gift of health.

I wanted to live a longer life for my kids and be able to do things I’ve never done before. I’ve since gone snow tubing and rode many roller coasters! I’ve hiked steep trails and run two 5Ks in a year.

I am off of all medication, and I am healthier and stronger than I have ever been. My journey has been incredible. My physical and psychological transformation is beyond words.

It all started with that first step, and I’m so proud of myself for taking it. I hope to inspire other women to start their own journeys. Mine has been amazing. If I can do it, so can they!

After some deep introspection, I realized that diets never worked for me and I didn’t want to give up the foods I loved.

I decided I would track my calories every day and stick to a specified calorie range. It was an effort to change, and I would stick with it as best I could, knowing that I would have good days and bad days.

I started making small changes the very next day. I ate what I wanted within my daily calorie range and started walking. I started feeling better, motivated, focused and determined. I went to the YMCA and joined group exercise classes almost daily.

The Reunion of the Founding Board

It was a cold, Tuesday evening. No one was quite sure what to expect, but one by one, cars pulled up to the curb. They parked in front of the beautiful brick house and made their way to the door. Slowly, the house filled with people, and the laughter and conversation were animated as old friends and colleagues shared hugs and squeals of delight in seeing one another. The air was thick with stories and memories, eager to be shared.

Chairs were brought in from other rooms, and a group of 14 sat in a circle, mostly women, but a couple of men. And the reminiscing began…

BROOKE BURR

Twenty years ago, in 1998, Brooke Burr visited Washington, D.C. and participated in her first Komen Race for the Cure.

She walked in honor of her friend, Pam Versaggi, who was in treatment for breast cancer. The experience was lifechanging. She returned to Winston-Salem to share the experience with her friend Pam and to encourage her to participate in the National Race for the Cure.

PAM VERSAGGI

The founding survivor on the board, Pam recalls her first experience with a Komen race as being life-changing.

She walked with thousands of women who were survivors.

Though she’d been surrounded by family and friends throughout her cancer journey, she finally realized she wasn’t alone. She was one of many who fought the same fight; many of whom who had been victorious over it.

Together, Brooke and Pam saw hope. Courage. Tenacity. Strength. Beauty. And fierce determination. With their own brand of fierce determination. They found others who saw the potential benefits of bringing a Komen Race for the Cure to Winston-Salem. These are the founding heroes of the Northwest North Carolina affiliate of Komen.

CINDY CHRISTOPHER Well known for her community advocacy efforts and volunteer work, Cindy was (at the time) the President of the Junior League. She was in a great position to help recruit numerous volunteers. Cindy was a tremendous resource for the budding Komen board and a tireless leader for helping get the first race started.

SUSAN KING DERAMUS There are movers and shakers. And then, there’s Susan King DeRumas. When others see obstacles, Susan sees opportunities. It was her persistent vision that brought two local healthcare powerhouses under one roof for a common goal.

Taking a pause mid-career is never an easy decision for a young mom, but Carolyn was doing just that. Her friend Cindy Christopher called her to share the news of the Komen race coming to Winston-Salem.

The concept struck both a compassionate and philanthropic chord for Carolyn, who jumped in with both feet.

Danna was still recovering from her own bilateral mastectomy when she got a call from Cindy Christopher, asking her to participate. One of the first two survivors on the board, Danna brought a personal, first-hand perspective to the group.

CINDY FARMER

In a moment that could have only been orchestrated by God Himself, Cindy was presented with the opportunity to help support Komen just as she was grieving the loss of a close friend who died from breast cancer. From the moment the concept of the Komen race was presented to her, she felt God giving her a nudge to be an advocate for the cause.

These are some of the leaders that make up the foundation of Komen of Northwest North Carolina. This is the power of shared vision.

Commitment. Determination. Teamwork.

Perseverance. Friendship. And one more thing...

The people named come from different backgrounds, and they have different stories.

But their common denominator in the successful launch of Komen Northwest North Carolina was love. Whether love for a specific individual or love for their fellow humans and a heartfelt desire to help support those going through such an ordeal, these are people for whom the cause has never diminished.

These are people of action. Words weren’t enough. They said they were going to, and they did. They gathered followers and participants.

They recruited sponsors. They raised money.

They raised awareness. They identified a need.

Michelle’s curiosity was piqued when she noticed a group of women regularly meeting at the YWCA. Intrigued, she began to ask around.

Who were these women? What were they doing? When she learned about their plans to bring a Komen Race to Winston-Salem, she knew this was a group she had to be a part of.

TOM SHORT

A Komen race consultant from Dallas, Texas, whose heart was touched by the ladies of the first Komen board. He committed to helping support the first race. With his guidance and mentorship, this self-organized team-with-a-vision pulled together a first race that was so memorable, it is still celebrated 20 years later.

EDITH HOOD

An honorable mention because Edith wasn’t an original board member.

She wasn’t even a board member at all. But her $50,000 donation was the first seed money donated to Komen of Northwest North Carolina. It was her support of the vision that began the life-changing work that has touched countless lives in our community.

They created a shared goal and a common cause. Their contagious enthusiasm was met with extraordinary results.

In fact, the results of their first collaborative effort included 4,500+ participants and a staggering $367,000 in donations. Raised on a rainy, cold, dreary day, lit up with pink t-shirts and smiling faces of survivors and supporters.

Their story is remarkable. The chain reaction has had an untold reach in our community.

For 20 years, Komen has existed in Winston-Salem (and grown to service 22 counties) because of the people who believed a race in our community was possible. Could it have happened without them? Sure. But with the kind of response that still brings a sparkle to eyes that are bright with excitement? Who knows? This is a success story of the perfect mix of talent and passion.

It’s a success story poised to re-write itself. With the founding Komen board members joining forces with the existing board, as well as new executive director, Michael McKinney, 2018 promises to be a year of renewed commitment to a cause for whom a cure is inevitable…because with champions like these, how can it not be?

Out with the Old, In with the New How to sort through the chaos to get the most out of your home!

GET STARTED

Do you ever look around your home and wonder how the heck you wound up with so much stuff? Recently my husband and I decided that the space in our house wasn’t being used to the best of its ability. (I mean, a collection of board games stacked to the ceiling probably isn’t what our coat closet was intended for, right?) After a few weekends of tackling each part of the house, I’m happy to say it feels like we added square footage to our home! It’s amazing what sorting through things and reimagining each space can do.

Once you have your project lists, you can choose where to start. My favorite way to determine this is asking myself which room or closet gives me the biggest headache when I think about it. Maybe for you, it’s the garage you can’t park your car in or the computer area with endless stacks of paper everywhere. Look at the space you are going to tackle and grab any supplies needed such as garbage bags, boxes, new organization tools for the area, or anything else you might need. When you’re ready to jump into the first thing on the list, it may be a great time to get the family involved, too, or even grab a friend who loves a good project!

With all the things that make their way into our homes over the years, it’s not hard to wind up with what feels like chaos somewhere down the line. Taking inventory of your home and sorting through it all to make space for new experiences and new things can be simple and rewarding. But, where to begin?

As you attack each part of the house you’ll want to organize unwanted items into the below four categories to help you stay focused and get the most out of your sorting. (It can be difficult to get rid of things, so try to remember that getting rid of things makes a room feel bigger and is easier to keep clean.)

BREAK IT DOWN

If you’re like me, looking at the big-picture project can sometimes seem overwhelming. Rather than tackling Revamp the Entire House 2018, break it down into smaller projects to make it more manageable. Take inventory of your home and the spaces that need the most help and go from there! I recommend creating two lists to stay organized.

The first is your smaller projects, which are tasks that have a less than a 30-minute time commitment. (e.g., cleaning out the linen closet, reorganizing the nightstands, etc.)

The second list would be comprised of bigger projects that take an hour or more. (e.g., master closet makeover, home office organization, etc.)

GET IT OUT OF THERE

Repurpose – Ask yourself if the item can be used somewhere else in the home? Is that unwanted basket under the sink the perfect item to store your remote controls on the coffee table? If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you may be able to find a new purpose for items like clothing and old furniture, so keep a creative eye open.

Sell – You work hard for your money and just because the item no longer has use to you, doesn’t mean you should lose out. Yard sales, consignment shops, Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace all are great ways to try to make some money back on your stuff.

Donate – You’ve heard the expression “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”? Many of the items you no longer find desirable or have a need for can benefit someone else. Local thrift stores like the Rescue Mission Thrift in downtown Winston-Salem would be more than happy for your gently used items.

Toss – Let’s be real. Sometimes we just have trash piled up in places.

Old papers, expired makeup, clothing beyond repair? Recycle what you can and toss the rest.

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SPACE

Lots of Luck!

Have you ever thought about how an inanimate object or animals can hold something like luck? Here are the historical stories behind some of the most popular good luck charms:

HORSESHOES

small elephant statues in the entrance hall of their home to bring longevity, success, and knowledge throughout the household.

LUCKY DICE

The practice of hanging up horseshoes came from Saint Dunstan, a historical blacksmith who was commanded by the Devil to put horseshoes on his horse. Instead Dunstan, not wanting to obey the Devil, nailed the horseshoe to the Devil’s foot instead. The Devil was in so much pain, but Dunstan did nothing to remove the horseshoe, thus relieving the Devil’s pain. The Devil then declared that he would never enter a home or building with a horseshoe hanging over the front door. Therefore, you see some people hanging horseshoes over their doors.

Lucky dice became popularized during World War II where fighter pilots would go on missions with narrow odds of returning home. To increase their chances of a safe mission and return, they would bring lucky charms along with them on their flight, such as cards and dice. From this era, fuzzy dice were marketed in the late 1950s by hanging them on rearview mirrors and became a fuzzy fad. Dice also became a symbol of luck due to the amount of dice rolled in a game of chance. Maybe one may win by rolling a lucky 7…!

FOUR-LEAF CLOVERS

The number 7 has always held special meanings throughout history. It has always been associated with luck, perfection, completion, and knowledge. There are several good occurrences when this number uniquely shows up: seven days in a week; seven colors in a rainbow; and seven being the winning roll when playing with dice.

There are various reasons why these unique plants are deemed as fortunate. For one, their rarity makes them more valuable (almost one in 10,000!). These are an old Irish symbol of luck that led the Celts to believe that they could see fairies and avoid any mischief that those fairies brought.

The mischievous acts of these fairies were thought to be a source of bad luck. Also, the four leaves were believed to represent faith, love, hope, and luck. Other beliefs claim that the four leaves represented fame, wealth, health, and faithful love.

ELEPHANTS

Elephants are quite admirable creatures. They are highly intelligent with a great memory, capable of showing compassion and expressing grief, and are great at using tools. Why do they carry a reputation of good fortune? Elephants are known to represent strength, power, wisdom, and stability. Many cultures, especially Asian, practice placing small elephant statues or pictures next to the front door of their homes to bring good luck into the house.

Also, many Asian business owners place elephant statues near the office entrance to provide stability and wisdom for the company and to attract success.

LADYBUG.

These adorable insects have been looked upon as lucky over the years by many different cultures. Some cultures claim that if a ladybug lands on your hand without you brushing it off, it will bring good fortune in your life.

Other cultures say that if a ladybug is spotted by both a man and woman at the same time, they will fall in love! Belgians believed if a ladybug crawled across a single woman’s hand, she would get married soon. Farmers also saw ladybugs as a sign of fortune when they were spotted crawling over their crops, because that meant a plentiful harvest was on its way. It is also believed that the deeper their color is, and the more spots they have, the more luck they will bring!

Whether you believe in lucky charms or not, it’s always enjoyable and enlightening to plow the ground and explore the seeds that brought forth these beliefs. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

MAKE EXERCISE PART OF YOUR AGING PROCESS

Growing old can be a trying time for everyone. But decisions we make as we age can be critical to the quality of life we live as we get older. In this article, I want to discuss the importance of exercise in the aging process.

As we age, the body does take a little longer to repair itself, but the benefits of exercising regularly far outweigh the risk. Many medical conditions are improved with exercise, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity and even Alzheimer’s and dementia.

In my 40 years of working out and being a part of training, there are three areas that I believe to be critical in any training program. They include aerobic activity, strength and resistance training, and stretching and flexibility exercises.

Aerobic activities generally recommend 30 minutes of cardiorespiratory endurance exercise, such as walking, cycling and swimming. While I am not a big enthusiast on jogging due to the stress it puts on our joints, elevating the heart rate several times where normal talking becomes difficult can be most beneficial.

Strength and resistance training, in my personal opinion, can be crucial in the aging process. Strength training helps prevent loss of bone mass and improves balance, both things that will help seniors avoid falls and broken bones.

Stretching is also vital as we get older.

Maintaining our flexibility will assist in keeping us mobile and can be instrumental in all daily activities that can enhance our quality of life.

An exercise program should also focus on developing a strong core. Core muscles provide the foundation for all movement and strength. Core strength can help reduce muscle pain and strains to our lower back that can occur at any age.

Exercise should be a commitment for all ages, sizes and sexes. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to lose weight, have more energy, or even hit a golf ball farther. Your commitment will lead to a happier and more fulfilling life.

Healthy Appetizer Ideas

We’ve all been there…we’ve been invited to a party and promised ourselves before arriving, “I will make sure I eat healthy and don’t over-indulge.” Well, to no avail there ends up being only cheesy and fatty appetizers that are delicious, but not exactly in your healthy eating plan. I’m here to save the day! If you are a party goer, offer to bring one of these appetizers below. If you are hosting a party, try some of these appetizers because they are winners. I promise you won’t miss the fat and calories!

CAPRESE SKEWERS Yes, these bite-size goodies have cheese on them but they are portion controlled!

Allow yourself two of these and you’re good to go.

• Toothpicks • Bite-size tomatoes (cherry tomatoes) • Basil leaves, chopped • Mini mozzarella balls • Balsamic vinegar – ½ cup • Olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste 1. To make the balsamic syrup, place on stovetop on medium heat.

Simmer until the vinegar starts to form a syrup and get thick. This usually takes 10-15 minutes. Set aside and let cool.

2. Start assembling your skewers.

Place 1 tomato, 1 basil leaf and 1 mozzarella ball on a toothpick. Once you’ve used all the ingredients and the toothpicks are full, place into your serving dish.

3. Drizzle the skewers with olive oil and salt and pepper.

Lastly, finish with a drizzle of the balsamic syrup.

LOADED SWEET POTATO BITES

I love these sweet potato bites because they are super cute and offer more nutrients than typical nachos.

• Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into ¼ inch rounds • Green onions, diced • Light sour cream • Crushed red pepper flakes • Salt, pepper and cumin 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Stir together enough olive oil to coat the sweet potato rounds.

Add salt, pepper and cumin to taste. Spread onto sheet pan.

Bake for 8 minutes and then flip the rounds and bake for an additional 8 minutes or until done.

2. Top each round with a small dollop of sour cream, a sprinkle of green onions and a dash of red pepper flakes. Yummy!

BRUSCHETTA WITH WHEAT BREAD

Who doesn’t love toasty bread with tomatoes? This girl does! This is made healthier by using wheat bread and less cheese than the traditional recipe.

• 1 wheat baguette, cut into slices and toasted • 2 teaspoons minced garlic • 3 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup parmesan cheese • 3 cups chopped Roma tomatoes • Thinly sliced basil • Balsamic vinegar and salt, to taste 1. Combine all ingredients but the bread in a bowl. Place in the refrigerator and let this mixture sit at least an hour to allow the flavors to mellow.

2. Place tomato mixture on top of bread slices and dig in!

Reusing & Repurposing Everything Needed to Turn House into Home

CORBETT In April of 2015, the doors of a remarkable endeavor opened with the purpose of serving some of the most deserving individuals in our community with a service they never dreamed of receiving. Since that opening date not too long ago, more than 350 families have been touched by greeNest.

“Like all good projects, greeNest started as a perfect storm of ideas: Our church, Augsburg Lutheran, was gearing up for the winter homeless overflow shelter and we knew well the struggles and obstacles that face the guests there,” said Co-Founder Joanna Britt. “Several years before, a friend of ours had started an organization called The Green Chair Project in Raleigh that had uncovered and served a greater need than they ever imagined. We modeled closely after them but knew there would be challenges in Forsyth County that would be different from those in Wake County. My sister, Jan Barbee, was considering retiring from teaching high school, and I am an artist and we wanted to work on a project together. This was it!”

Joanna and Jan knew they would need to partner with others to make their dreams of changing lives a reality. “Since we opened, we have partnered with 45 social service agencies and faith community care teams who have, through greeNest, assisted their clients in furnishing their homes,” said Britt. “These relationships have been invaluable in connecting us with the great need that is in Forsyth County. We assist families that are moving into sustainable homes from a variety of crisis situations, including insect infestations, fire or another catastrophe, those fleeing domestic violence, coming out of incarceration or aging out of foster care, among others. We are constantly humbled as we realize how much these folks have been through and how hard they have worked to get to the point of being ready for our services. We have met so many wonderful families and individuals, many veterans and lots of children!”

Even though greeNest has partnered with other organizations, there is still a great need for help from the local community. “To ‘keep our lights on,’ we have depended on financial donations from individuals in the community and grant funding,” said Britt. “We love that this is a community organization…funded and operated by generous donors and volunteers. Because of the way the concept has been embraced by

GreeNest has also developed a program known as “Up Off the Floor” which has served more than 47 families (more than 100 children) so far. “Through grant funding, Up Off the Floor provides twin bed frames, mattresses and bedding for children identified by WSFCS social workers in Title One schools as sleeping on the floor,” said Britt.

our donors, partnering agencies and those in the Rapid Re-housing network, we have outgrown our space and are looking for new space that will allow us to be more active in procuring items for our participants. We have received items from Wake Forest and NC School of the Arts, as well as a few local hotels and several consignment and furniture stores, but we have also had to turn down donations because we simply did not have the space at the time to store them.

New space is definitely one of our top priorities this year!”

Donations of time are always appreciated, as are financial donations, but there are other ways to help as well! “We accept donations of gently used furnishings from the community and work with casemanaged programs in Forsyth County that are helping families move from crisis into sustainable housing as they furnish their home,” said Britt. “For a small furnishing fee (about $150), a family can furnish a one-bedroom apartment. This furnishing fee gives the participant a true sense of ownership. As one of our participants said (through tears), ‘Now my family can sit around the dinner table and talk about the day, because we HAVE a dinner table to sit around!’”

Interested in volunteering? “There are a variety of jobs to do around the warehouse, from cleaning and processing incoming donations to arranging and dusting furniture to creating cooking and dining packs,” said Britt. “We have had several high school students and entire families that have joined our ranks on a regular basis. Also, spread the word about greeNest! We are so happy to take your gently used home furnishings and get them into the homes of those in our community who need to make their house a home! We accept not only furniture, but cookware, dishes and silverware, towels, sheets, comforters and small appliances. And, to keep those lights on, we will gladly accept financial donations!”

Choosing a paint color can be a time-consuming and frustrating process when the array of colors is so diverse. Popularity often influences main choices, from the ever-appealing “white” to the blue and green hues, which emerged as popular color choices for cabinetry in 2017. In the new year, an additional trend is seeing cabinetry in darker natural woods, such as walnut and mahogany, or a charcoal black. If you are seeking an intense color, then check out this year’s Pantone color choice, “ultraviolet.” In lieu of looking for a “color,” think about the description you would like to achieve, such as fresh and earthy, a warm white, a pop of color, or bold and bright.

Embracing Your Own Timeline:

How to Rise Above Comparison to Lead a Life You Love Yet, every now and then I did question our choices of timing and let myself fall into that comparison trap that we all find ourselves in time and again.

It’s that little voice that pops into our head. You know the one? It’s sneaky and will say things like, “Maybe you should be at (fill in the blank) stage of life by now.” It makes you stop and question how the timeline of your own life measures up to those around you.

I married my best friend when we were both twenty-one years old as we were approaching the end of our college careers. I remember getting engaged and once the excitement settled a bit, I wondered if anyone (outside of our families) would think we were too young, and then wondered if I cared.

I was nineteen and a sophomore in college at that point and knew we would have a long engagement and were planning to wait until after we graduated to get married. At that time, I fell into a routine of announcing my engagement but making sure to add a disclaimer: “…but we’re waiting until after college to get married.” I think I added this because I felt it got rid of some of the stigmas of being engaged young.

Spoiler alert. As my first sentence stated, we didn’t end up waiting until after college.

Honestly, we both got to the point where it didn’t make sense anymore to wait to start out life together and we decided to set the date and the rest is history. Looking back, I realize how often throughout our relationship I felt the need to add a disclaimer to our decisions. I guess it was my way of providing a preemptive reasoning before anyone could form their own opinion of the timing we chose to do things.

I used to think that getting married at the younger end of the spectrum was the reason behind the unsolicited advice my husband and I would get from people over the years. We’d hear things like, “You won’t graduate college if you get married first,” “Renting is a waste of money, you should really buy a house already,” and let’s not forget about the ever popular “Are you going to have kids soon? You don’t want to wait too long,” comments people love to offer up.

Remember that sing-song children’s rhyme?

“First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage.”

It’s almost as though the sequence of our lives was already being engrained in us. Of course, it’s just a silly rhyme but I believe there is a sneaky similarity to the timelines many women are taught they should follow.

People love to give opinions on the “right” timing to do things in a relationship, as a parent, in a career, at retirement - the list goes on. No stage of life is sacred.

I can say with honesty, that I trusted in every life choice my husband and I made together, even when they didn’t seem to follow the timeline of others around us. We were happy not to rush into every new stage and still have so much to look forward to.

As a wise-old-married-lady of only twenty-eight, here is some advice. Don’t listen to that voice.

Stop being worried about what’s next and enjoy each segment, despite what strangers or loved ones may offer as the assumed next step in life.

You never get a phase of your life back, so leave comparison at the door while you’re at it and embrace where you are. If you’re dating, try not to worry about how long it should be before you’re living together or engaged. Instead, enjoy that excitement of still being picked up for a date. If the rest of your social circle is retiring and you aren’t ready to let go of your career yet - don’t!

It may be the confidence that only comes with getting older, but I try to no longer provide disclaimers with my life choices, because nobody needs to know why we choose to live our lives the way we do. I know now that choosing our own timeline is what led my husband and I to have the incredible marriage we have. (That and God’s sheer grace.) Life goes so quickly on its own without getting caught up in the timing of it all. We just have to trust that everything in life will happen exactly when it’s supposed to.

Ribbons with Reasons The Causes Behind the Colors

BY MEGAN TAYLOR We all have seen them at one time or another: awareness ribbons of different colors, representing various causes. According to the website Disabled World Towards Tomorrow, awareness ribbons are “short pieces of colored ribbon folded into a loop and are used in the United States, Canada, Australia, UK, and other parts of the world.” These ribbons are used to show your support for a certain cause or issue. A single color can have multiple meanings, and some can have patterns. Also, a cause or issue can have more than one color. There is no exact number as to how many awareness ribbons exist because they are universally-used. Some of the wellknown colors include pink for breast cancer, red for AIDS, and purple for Alzheimer’s. But, do you know what the lesser known colors support? Let’s take a look below.

• Black is used as a sign of mourning for those lost in the 9/11 attacks and the Virginia Tech massacre. Also, black is associated with melanoma awareness, narcolepsy, and sleep disorders.

• Blue awareness ribbons have many meanings, including addiction recovery awareness, bullying, colon cancer, foster care awareness, Huntington’s disease, and the West Nile virus. Light blue ribbons stand for Addison’s disease, prostate cancer, and lymphedema. As for navy blue, this color brings awareness to Crohn’s disease, rectal cancer, colon cancer, and colorectal cancers. Robin’s egg blue represents Pierre Robin syndrome, and pale blue is achalasia awareness. Lastly, royal blue stands for child abuse awareness.

A mixed blue and gray ribbon with a red drop means awareness for type 1 diabetes.

• Brown is an alternate color for colon cancer and colorectal cancers, but it also stands for anti-tobacco.

• Burgundy has a few different meanings, including adults with disabilities, meningitis, sickle cell anemia, and headaches and migraines.

• Brain tumors and brain cancer are supported through gray ribbons. Also, diabetes and asthma awareness use this color.

• There are a few shades of green that symbolize various causes. Your regular shade of green gives awareness to bipolar disorder, childhood depression, cerebral palsy, depression, mental health, mental illness, and kidney cancer. A lime green ribbon is used for Lyme disease, muscular

dystrophy, and lymphoma. Addiction recovery, bone tumor awareness, and renal cell carcinoma are supported by turquoise ribbons. Another commonly known awareness ribbon is the color teal. This shade represents anti-bullying, anxiety disorder, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and other gynecological cancers, polycystic ovarian syndrome, food allergies, post-traumatic stress disorder, and sexual assault and sexual violence awareness.

• Yellow awareness ribbons mean bladder cancer, endometriosis awareness, liver cancer and liver disease, missing children, and suicide prevention.

• Gold awareness ribbons are another popular color and many people know their meanings. Childhood cancers and neuroblastoma and osteosarcoma are represented by this color.

• Orange brings awareness to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), COPD, leukemia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and kidney cancer.

• Pearl, white and clear ribbons stand for dating violence awareness, lung cancer and lung disease, emphysema, bone cancer, postpartum depression, and scoliosis.

• Pink is very well-known for breast cancer, but it also gives awareness to birth parents and nursing mothers.

• Many people associate purple awareness ribbons with Alzheimer’s Disease, but that isn’t the only thing they’re known for. This color is used for ADD, ADHD, cystic fibrosis, domestic violence, epilepsy, March of Dimes, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer. Shades of purple, such as lavender and periwinkle draw awareness to all types of cancer awareness, gynecological cancers, eating disorders, and gastric cancer.

• Last, but not least, brain disorders, dyslexia, Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia are given awareness through the color silver.

Symbols and patterns are also used in various awareness ribbons. These symbols include the autism infinity symbol, blue star, blue diabetes circle, and butterflies for Turner syndrome and Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome.

PATRICK RISER FITNESS: BRINGING TRAINING & NUTRITION TO YOU Since his high school basketball days, Winston-Salem local Patrick Riser has made working out more than just a hobby and turned it into a passion. For the past six years, he has been working as a personal trainer, helping clients reach their ideal health and nutrition goals.

“I initially started off at a commercial gym like most trainers do. Eventually, I branched off and started my own local and online training business. My online business is done via Instagram, as well as a plethora of local clientele who I train face to face at the gym, Kore Training Systems, in Clemmons,” stated Riser.

Riser helps over 50 thousand followers train on Instagram and over 500 clients through his online program. He is a certified ACE (American Council on Exercise) personal trainer and a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) fitness nutritionist. Each plan is designed specifically for the client and their needs, who vary in ages and demographics. Riser states he has worked with teenagers who are getting stronger for various sports and has assisted people in their 60s dealing with arthritis and osteoporosis.

I find out about their past workout experience and any injuries he or she has had. As for creating their nutrition plan, I branch off of what each individual is currently eating and doing. It is an easier transition to a healthier lifestyle and, in the end, there are better long-term results,” Riser commented.

From his experience, Riser has found his process to be successful with clients.

Another benefit of individual training and nutrition plans is having a personalized schedule.

“I base my schedule 100% off my clients’ needs. I am able to work around anyone’s day and give them a short, but efficient workout. My online training is a great option for those who opt to work out on their own with a plan customized to their needs. I’m always just a phone call or text away,” said Riser.

For some, this individualized plan may sound expensive, but it’s not! Riser’s nutrition plans start at $50, training sessions start at $40, and a group trainer session starts at $15 for a minimum of three people. According to Riser,

“For online, this is doable since I don’t meet with these people in person. As for my local clients, I would like to eventually transition into a “bring a gym to you” type of deal,” explained Riser.

This “bring a gym to you” program would give clients the opportunity to work out without leaving the comfort of their homes, and Riser would bring the necessary equipment. This idea is just one of the many examples of how far Riser will go to assist his clients.

GIVING PETS MEDICATION & MANAGING THEIR FEARS.

Giving a pet their medication may not be as simple as wrapping a pill in a piece of turkey. It may require patience and time, especially as the pet may be stressed to be given medication by someone other than their owner. Take notes before the owner leaves, and make notes while they’re gone, too. Is the pet showing signs of distress? Do you need to sit with them and speak soothingly to them to encourage them to eat? Is there anything you need to alert the owner to when they return?

YOU MAY BE BITTEN OR SCRATCHED.

Pets who are under stress may manifest it in negative ways, such as biting and scratching – even pets who have never shown aggression. Be prepared with a first aid kit, and don’t react in loud, threatening ways. That would only exacerbate a situation. Make a note of it, and be sure to tell the owner about the incident.

BE PREPARED TO HANDLE THE POOP.

Don’t take on the role of pet sitter if you’re not willing to deal with the ugly, too. Kitty boxes will need to be scooped daily and the floor swept around them. Dog poo will need to be scooped in the yard and disposed of properly.

Being a pet sitter is a great way to earn some extra money, but it’s not without its cons. Consider all the responsibilities before jumping in to offer your services.

Dash of Everything Podcast

Our nation’s history is littered with heroes and moments that have helped shape this country and even define it. From the first man walking on the moon, Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, or the election of the first African American president in Barrack Obama, moments and people can truly define a country or time. Sports can be just as responsible for doing this, and no other sport has defined our country more than baseball. Heroes such as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Jackie Robinson have given us moments that are talked about today. Even as soon as 2016, when the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series title in 71 years, once again America stopped, listened, hoped and cheered as new heroes and moments were created. Baseball is still a part of the fabric that is this country.

This is even true locally and is demonstrated every season with the success of the WinstonSalem Dash minor league baseball team. From the moment the club moved to downtown Winston-Salem, it became an important part of the downtown scene. Knowing this, the Winston-Salem Dash have worked hard to make the club not only easily accessible, but a real part of the community. One way they have achieved this was to introduce a Winston-Salem Dash podcast, and the community has listened in.

“The podcast started before the beginning of last season. Brian Boesch (the former “Voice of the Dash”), David Kahn (a broadcast/media relations assistant, like me last year) and I were well aware that the media landscape had been gravitating towards that medium, and we felt it could create something fun that would resonate with people who are interested in the Dash, Minor League Baseball and the Chicago White Sox. Thus, the Dash of Everything Podcast was born in March 2017,” says Joe Weil, Broadcast and Media Relations Manager of the Winston-Salem Dash.

“The goal of the podcast is to humanize the players we are covering. All too often, prospects are seen as stocks rather than people, and what you learn in Minor League Baseball is that there is an incredible story behind each player. We also want our listeners to get to know the incredible personalities that are behind these guys. The Dash team has been a huge part of this community for quite some time, and this podcast allows people to get to know the players who are performing in front of them. The fans fall in love with the players through the course of the season, and we want to provide our fans with an opportunity to get to know the players they love watching,” Weil continues.

“What makes our podcast so unique is the access we have to our players. We work with these guys on a daily basis and ride the bus with them to the various ballparks in the Carolina League, and that provides us an opportunity to get to know them. I think what also makes our podcast unique is that

we are talking to these guys as Minor Leaguers. Every player’s goal is to reach the Majors, and I think it provides a lot of value that we get to hear what it is like in their shoes before they get closer to that stage. We also do a fun segment where we dig up old tweets from the players and ask them about what they thought when they sent it. The long-term vision of the podcast is to have it become one of the most popular listens in Minor League Baseball.

We want it to become one of the marquee forums of its kind in that realm,” he concludes.

Baseball has truly made its mark on our culture. It has made its mark on this nation and in fans’ hearts for years. The reasons for this can be debated and discussed, but one thing cannot: Americans love their baseball. In a time when it’s easier to find differences and disagreements than common ground, it’s a great feeling to sit next to someone new and cheer and “high five” a simple little ball that truly has stood the test of time.

5 Novels that Will Immerse You in Different Cultures

Reading is a leisurely joy for many and, quite frankly, an adventure that leads us into a vicarious world of possibilities, plots, drama, twists, and perhaps eccentric but loveable characters. But there are many existing novels that will enlighten you with fresh cultural perspective. Below are a few bestselling novels with their synopses that will plant in you a seed of cultural knowledge and appreciation that will hopefully grow into further exploration!

1. AMERICANAH BY CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE

tells the unique love story of Ifemelu, a young Nigerian woman, and Obinze, a young Nigerian man. Americanah is set in a time where military dictatorship breaks out in Nigeria and many citizens are seeking to leave the country.

Ifemelu then leaves for the United States for university while Obinze, wanting to join Ifemelu, ends up in London. They both have struggles adapting to these new cultures as immigrants: Ifemelu becomes a victim of racism and depression while struggling to find a job and adapt to American culture.

Meanwhile in London, Obinze’s visa expires and he ends up undocumented, seeking to live under a different name to remain in his new home. Later, amid Ifemelu’s blogging success in America and Obinze’s high-paying job as a property developer back in Nigeria, the two reunite in their native country in hopes of rekindling their relationship. Americanah tells a relatable story through the lens of immigrants who struggle to adapt to a new world but still find success while managing to stay rooted in their culture.

2. ANNA KARENINA BY LEO TOLSTOY

is one of the greatest love stories in world literature! This dense, but equally intriguing, novel is set in imperial Russia. Anna Karenina, a married woman and mother, falls madly in love with a rich army officer named Count Vronsky. Anna’s passionate love and desire to find meaning in her life drives her to leave her husband and child to live with Vronsky. But she soon slips into a hopeless situation from which she cannot seem to escape. Anna Karenina is infused with history and Russian culture, and paints a picture of what 19th century Russia looked like. It also shows how Anna was ostracized and criticized by her peers for breaking Russian society norms.

3. THE LOWLAND BY JHUMPA LAHIRI

is a vivid and comprehensive family saga that traces the life of an Indian family during times of brutal war. It marries Indian culture with its history. The family flees to America because of this war and the narrator follows how they adjust to American culture and customs, despite being haunted by their past.

4. HOMEGOING BY YAA GYASI

is steeped in culture as it takes place in 18th century Ghana. Homegoing follows two half sisters who were born in two different villages and brought up in polarizing situations, completely unaware of one another.

One sister grows up marrying a wealthy Englishman and lives in a castle.

The other sister ends up being captured, imprisoned in the same castle as her sister, and sold into slavery. This is also a family saga that follows the descendants to Mississippi, all the way to the Jazz Age.

5. PERSEPOLIS: THE STORY OF A CHILDHOOD BY MARJANE SATRAPI

is a graphic (comic) novel but a literary favorite that is set in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Satrapi gives us a true account of her childhood that is marred with war in her country. This poignant story is told through the eyes and voice of an intelligent, outspoken young girl and is soaked in the country’s history. It gives a vivid image on what the culture is like and teaches a great deal on how to positively respond to national chaos.

These are only a few novels that are steeped with culture and history. There are so many more gems to explore and gain a sharper perspective on different cultures – take a look through your local library to find some that open your eyes to something new!

Goes to the Movies!

BY VONDA HENDERSON How often do you finish reading a book and think ‘That would have made a great movie!’? Perhaps it did. Or, watch a movie and wish it were a book. Again, perhaps it was. Let’s take A Novel Idea to the movies (we’ll be back to our book review format next month) and check out books that were adapted to film. Some may be familiar; some may be surprising. (Disclaimer: This is an extremely short listing of book adaptations. Hopefully, some of your favorites are mentioned!)

Classics

There’s as much history about the making of Gone With the Wind as the actual film.

Adapted from Margaret Mitchell’s 1939 epic American novel, David O. Selznick’s film version is in a class by itself.

The movie To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Originally published in 1960, the novel has never been out of print.

Drama

The Godfather saga was adapted from Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. For fans, a recent television documentary on the behind-the-scenes drama is enlightening.

Forrest Gump was based on a novel

by Winston Groom. Although it was reported that Tom Hanks did not want to make a sequel; there is a second Gump book in print, Gump & Co. Shawshank Redemption is based on Stephen King’s novelette, Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption from his short stories Different Seasons (1982).

Million Dollar Baby was adapted from Rope Burns by F. X. Toole (aka Jeremy Boyd). These short stories were based on Boyd’s experiences while working as a boxing trainer.

Westerns

Dances with Wolves was based on the 1988 novel, Dances with Wolves, by Michael Blake.

Blake also won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Comedy

MASH was adapted from the 1968 book, MASH, written

by Hiester R. Hornberger, Jr. over an eleven-year period under his pseudonym, Richard Hooker. The book is based on his personal experiences as a surgeon with a MASH unit in Korea.

The Parent Trap was based on the German novel, Lottie and Lisa (Das doppelte Lottchen) by Erick Kästner written in 1949.

Mrs. Doubtfire was based on British author Anne Fine’s book Alias Madame Doubtfire. The film’s storyline was quite true to the plot of the book.

Christmas with the Kranks is based on Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. Published in 2001, this lighthearted novel is a departure from Grisham’s typical novels – funny, poignant, and not an attorney in sight.

Military

From Here to Eternity was adapted from James Jones’ novel From Here to Eternity. Jones was actually stationed in Hawaii prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The movie Patton utilized two sources – a biography, Patton: Ordeal & Triumph by Ladislas Farago and A Soldier’s Story, Omar Bradley’s autobiography.

Horror

The list of novels by Stephen King transitioned to films is long. A few memorable films include Carrie, The Shining, IT, Misery, Cujo, Stand by Me, and Children of the Corn.

Psycho was based on Robert Bloch’s novel, Psycho.

Alfred Hitchcock bought the film rights in 1959 for $9,500 and people have faced taking showers with trepidation ever since.

Action

Die Hard was based on the novel, Nothing Lasts Forever, by Roderick Thorp, published in 1979. The book is actually a sequel to his 1966 novel, The Detective.

Musical

The Sound of Music was based on Maria von Trapp’s remarkable life as depicted in her memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Although the film ended with their escape, the book takes their journey all the way to their life in America.

South Pacific was loosely adapted from James A. Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum and published in 1900, was adapted to film as The Wizard of Oz in 1939. The film was nominated for Best Picture and lost to Gone With the Wind.

Sagas

The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling was adapted from seven novels into eight films.

The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer transitioned from four novels to five films.

Were you Team Edward or Team Jacob?

The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins translated into four films.

Overcoming Phobias: Practical, Reliable Methods

Considering that the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that approximately 10 percent of people in the U.S. experience some type of phobia, it should come as no surprise that having a phobia is the most common mental disorder in the United States.

The list of phobias is just as long as the names of the various fears. From the common phobias— “acrophobia” (fear of heights), “glossophobia” (fear of public speaking), “arachnophobia” (fear of spiders) and “aviophobia” (fear of flying)—to the rarer phobias— “coulrophobia” (fear of clowns), or “nomophobia” (fear of being without mobile phone coverage)—having a phobia occurs more than one may imagine.

What exactly is a phobia and how would one diagnosis this mental disorder? According to a Livewell.com article, “How many people have phobias?” a phobia falls under the category of anxiety disorders. This class would include disorders such as “generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder.”

While it is extremely difficult for even the most seasoned anxiety disorder experts to pinpoint exactly what causes a phobia, it is clear that most of them likely stem from genetics, life events or culture.

Anyone suffering from a phobia could either have the anxiety disorder begin at a very early age or emerge later in life. Regardless of when the phobia decides to show up, one thing is clear: the fear it induces is equal to the stress of severe injury or even death. While determining how a phobia may occur is not clear, the symptoms it can produce is. Those suffering from phobias can experience the following physical and mental indicators: dizziness, trembling and increased heart rate; breathlessness; nausea and stomach ailments; a sense of unreality; preoccupation with the “fear object”; and finally, fear of dying.

While slight fears about certain things or situations are completely normal, when these fears become phobias, they can begin to alter, or even ruin, people’s lives. Phobias can have a troubling impact on an individual’s health and mental wellbeing, causing anxiety levels to rise and, in the most severe cases, preventing individuals from their usual day-today activities. This said, finding coping mechanisms and techniques to overcome a phobia is extremely important. For those struggling with overcoming a phobia, seeking professional medical help is recommended first. However, read on for six relatively stress-free methods to begin gaining control of these fears.

METHOD #1: FLOODED EXPOSURE TO PHOBIA.

This may be the toughest process of conquering the phobia, but for many it has quick results. With this technique, the fear is tackled head-on. The individual confronts the phobia, allows the feelings to overcome them, then continues to be near the object/thing until the fear subsides. This is repeated until the feelings of anxiety have lessened. Through repeatedly confronting the phobia, the individual eventually realizes that the situation may be unpleasant, but not harmful.

METHOD #2: DESENSITIZING YOURSELF.

Also known as a gradual exposure method, this technique is great for those who cannot begin to imagine the thought of trying the flooded exposure technique. When the person is desensitizing themselves to the phobia, they are simply gradually exposing themselves to the dreaded thing/situation. For example, if they are terrified of heights, they would begin by going into a tall building, allowing themselves to look over a ledge, but withdrawing once the anxiety begins. The individual could try by looking down for five seconds, then build up until they have conquered the fear.

METHOD #3: GRABBING A PARTNER FOR HELP.

Just like gradual exposure, this slow confrontation method engages the support of a caring friend or family member for help. For example, if the individual is terrified of crowded places, they can have a friend accompany them. Then, when walking through a crowd, have the friend move ahead, so that the individual has to walk alone through the mass. Knowing that the support is close by, easily helps many conquer their fear.

METHOD #4: EDUCATING ONESELF ON RELAXATION TECHNIQUES.

While it is excellent to have a partner aid in the conquering of one’s fear, at times this method is not available. Therefore, it is vital to educate oneself on various relaxation practices to help overcome the anxiety that comes with phobias. Simply breathing deep from the abdomen can quickly quell feelings of panic and slow down shallow breathing and heartbeats.

METHOD #5: TRYING OUT HYPNOTHERAPY.

Sure, many consider hypnosis to be a smoke and mirrors method, nevertheless, there is a strong percentage of those who swear by trying this practice for overcoming their phobia. With hypnotherapy, the individual goes to a medical professional experienced in hypnosis for help.

The professional will help the patient –while under hypnosis—not just confront the fear, but also discover where the phobia stems from.

CYNDI BRIGGS CAPTURES LOCAL VETERAN STORIES

Since 2014 Dr. Cyndi Briggs has helped veterans record their stories for future generations. The daughter and granddaughter of Army veterans, Cyndi became interested in the effects of war after discovering her deceased grandfather’s World War II photos and memorabilia. The photos revealed a secret chapter in her grandfather’s life, as he never talked about his combat experiences.

Curiosity and a desire to understand his experiences led her to interview a World War II veteran. Since then, she has conducted more than 90 oral history interviews, primarily with World War II veterans from the US, Canada, and France, as well as veterans from the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and with civilians who experienced World War II in the US and England.

The interviews are archived in the New Winston Museum in WinstonSalem, NC, and are currently being added to the University of Kentucky Library Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS), where they will be searchable in the Library of Congress.

“On November 18, 2017, we presented a staged reading of 10 veterans’ stories,” explained Cyndi. “’I Was There: A Staged Reading of Veterans’ Stories’ project was created in collaboration with Dr. Brook Davis (Department of Theatre and Dance, Wake Forest University) and Dr. Cheyenne Carter (Counselor Education, Wake Forest University). Professional actors from the community collaborated with veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to create short vignettes presented to a live audience.

Cyndi has presented her research, both in the community and at professional conferences, including the North Carolina Counseling Association, the Southern Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors, the Association for Creativity in Counseling, and the American Counseling Association. The title of the project, “Soldiers’ Heart” refers to the earliest known name for what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). After the American Civil War, medical professionals, family and loved ones of returning soldiers struggled to define what had changed in the veterans who experienced significant trauma. Anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing all served as symptoms.

“Quite poetically,” said Cyndi, “nostalgia for home was also a symptom: a longing for a return to the past. In my oral history research I’ve interviewed several World War II veterans who still carry significant PTSD symptoms, some seven decades after the war. And nearly all the veterans demonstrate nostalgia for the life they had before the war, but also for the friendships and relationships they developed during it. A recurring theme in these interviews is, ‘I am so glad it happened. And I’d never do it again.’ In relationship to this theme, I have begun training counselors and hospice workers to address the specific needs of combat veterans at the end of life.”

The next staged reading, a residency-type format, will be performed in Fayetteville, NC and Winston-Salem this fall.

Cyndi has her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Guilford College, her master’s in counseling from Wake Forest University, and her doctorate in counseling from Oregon State University. In support of this project, Cyndi completed her Certificate in Documentary Arts from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in 2017.

She is employed as a core faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Walden University.

Like, Ya’ Know?

Word Overload

What annoys you in conversation? A catchphrase or word that creeps into almost every sentence? It’s easy to edit those out in writing; however, in conversation, other than walking away, you’re stuck. For instance . . .

“Hi, like I was just thinking about you! Saw the most awesome thing this morning, like really early, like around daybreak. I was like so excited to be up that early, like that never happens! Anyway, like I was saying, I was like just driving from home and like this amazing herd, I guess it was a herd, I’ve never seen anything like it before, just came out of like nowhere, man! Really! It was like mindblowing, dude! I was like I have to tell someone and here you are!”

Okay, hope you’re still reading – I feel that I must go wash my hands and sanitize my keyboard. Do you have any idea what the person was saying? Let’s try that once more . . .

“Hi, I was just thinking about you! I was up early this morning and saw something I’ve never seen before as I left home. A herd of (whatever animal it was – remember, that never was stated) was right in front of me. So glad I got to share that with you.”

Better? Although you still don’t really know what the person saw, you might still be paying enough attention and not mentally counting all the ‘likes’ in the first conversation to ask what type of animal they saw.

Interestingly, according to research, like is number two on the annoyance scale; whatever is number one.

What is your reaction when you hear whatever?

Depending on the volume/tone, it can take on several meanings – dismissive, condescending, irritating; it’s mostly a conversation ender, especially if enunciated with each letter.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHERS?

Words that describe a person – dude, man, bro. Put gnarly with it and you’ve got a description of sorts. According to the urban dictionary, gnarly is a negative description, not a good thing like cool.

Saying sorry (sort of) – my bad; sorry, not sorry; it is what it is; just sayin’.

Are you sorry or not? Nothing beats a simple ‘I’m sorry.’

Clarification – Ya’ know what I mean? Or the shorter version – Ya’ know?

By itself there’s nothing wrong with confirmation of understanding, it’s the repetitiveness of the phrase that’s the problem. Said often enough, someone may think you’re questioning their intellect.

To be honest – so, were you not truthful all the other times you were speaking?

With all due respect really doesn’t sound all that respectful. And, talk to the hand (stated or just with a hand raised) is clearly dismissive and meant an end to a conversation.

Amazing, awesome – Okay, something was fantastic. Could we please use another adjective and get out the ‘a’s’? I wouldn’t even mind a shazam thrown in there!

Granted, we all have our favorite sayings that we use without thinking. Some are just ‘place keeper’ type of words used while we quickly think of the word we intend to use. ‘Hmm’ is one that comes to mind – not really a word, but more an indicator that you’re thinking of what to say next. Sadly, ‘like’ seems to have taken on that characteristic and if you haven’t already surmised, it’s the word that drives me to distraction.

THE EXTERIOR: KEEPING THE SHINE

Salt and grime appear as a mask, camouflaging our vehicles from their native color and shine. However, one means to rejuvenate a vehicle from winter’s impact is a well-needed wash and shampoo. One of the many options available, especially as we enter a season of warmer temperatures, is to consider a car wash. You may discover that hand washing your car will provide a detailed understanding of every aspect of your “ride.”

INSPECTION

Whether your darlin’ beauty is vintage, rugged, a transport between work and home, or the family vehicle, every car demands different care. After rinsing thoroughly, light scratches, and swirls are noticeable. This is the perfect time to run your hand over the surface to check for small bumps or inspect for deep scratches or rust spots. Do not wait –take care of imperfections or problems immediately.

Often, surface issues can be resolved with minimal time and expense.

THE RIGHT TOOLS

We would never use an abrasive tool to wash our body or we would end up with scratches.

Washing a car with the wrong tool can result in the same effect if we look closely. With this idea in mind, embrace materials that are soft and comforting, such as sponges, terry cloth or microfiber towels, cheesecloth, and cloth diapers. In addition, due to the varying types of chemicals, it is important to separate the towels used on your paint, wheels, and windows during use. Afterward, wash your towels and mitts in hot water to ensure all material is cleaned and ready for the next use.

• Soap: A do-it-yourself car wash is the best means to clean a vehicle. While saving money, you are also in full control of the material and ingredients that are applied to the surface of your car. While household agents such as soap and dishwashing detergent have a purpose for cleaning, do not use these particular products on your car. They are not formulated to protect a car’s paint. In fact, it may strip off the protective wax and affect the paint and

shine. In using a car-wash product, you are guaranteed a soap that is both milder and specifically designed for use on automotive paint; therefore, it is important to read all labels. (The ingredients can vary between brands and vehicles.)

• Commercial Power Washing: One of the most beneficial ways to remove dirt and grime is to use a low force wash.

Commercial power washing is beneficial as long as you maintain a distance between the surface of the car and the powered jet.

A strong pressure can create small, shallow dings in the surface or damage the paint.

If you own a power washer, chose a low setting jet to apply to your car.

• Polish: While a good body wash is a wonderful start to care, we often take it one step further by applying a moisturizer to our skin. Polish acts with the same purpose. The conditioning oil will add depth to the color and enhance the shine, prior to the application of wax. (If you have a dark-hued vehicle, the polish is clearly visible, offering a maximum gloss in appearance.) Keep in mind, ingredients truly make a difference. Depending on the type of paint used on your vehicle, it may react to your polish, and result in scratches or stripping the car from its original shine. Be sure to read the label first, and begin with a small area prior to use on the entire vehicle.

• Wax: Before our bodies go out into the sun, a layer of sunscreen is needed. Wax, similarly, adds a layer of protection against UV rays and fading paint, and protects the layer of polish. Professionals have compared the two types of wax – carnauba and polymer – to a regular and synthetic engine oil. The polymer, despite being more expensive, is easier to use, and believed to result in a higher quality. It’s a good feeling to stand back and admire the radiant beauty of your vehicle, and know she is well protected, no matter the season or temperature!

Parents of Addicted Loved Ones

~ You Are Not Alone ~

PETERSON When Deborah Capps of Advance, NC, was dealing with her teenage son’s battle with alcohol and drugs over 20 years ago, support groups were rare; although she attended one for a while, places to help her know she wasn’t alone in her struggles to help her son were limited. “Kevin’s drug problem started in his teen years and gradually got worse – from marijuana, to harder drugs and alcohol. But with the birth of his daughter in 1996, we really thought he had conquered those demons. He stepped up as a dad and did everything he could to be what she needed him to be,” recalled Deborah. Sadly, on April 24, 2005, at the age of 31, with his daughter away at a sleepover, Kevin, after a day and night of heavy drinking, died at a party, on a sofa, and no one noticed. “I think ‘What if they could’ve done something to save him?’ Everyone was so out of it that they didn’t check on him until it was too late,” Deborah said.

So when her church, Clemmons United Methodist Church, (UMC) became involved with the national support group, PAL- Parents of Addicted Loved Ones, Deborah became a facilitator for the meetings. Her personal experience with her son gives her a passion to help other parents whose children are currently dealing with substance abuse. “These parents are still able to help their child and we are here to give them the support they need to make it through this journey,” commented Deborah.

PAL is a faith-based, Christian organization with a mission to provide hope through education and support to parents of addicted loved ones. Founded in 2006 and incorporated as a non-profit in 2015, the group has now expanded nationally. All facilitators must have or have had an addicted loved one and complete the PAL training. Clemmons UMC is the first church in North Carolina to support PAL. Reverend Gloria Hughes of Clemmons UMC said, “As the Church, the body of Christ, we are called to be a place that offers healing, hope and love in our world. Our community, like many others is facing a rising tide of substance abuse and addictions. There is no way we can take away the pain, but we can walk this journey together. We can be a welcoming, non-judgmental presence that prays for one another, listens to one another and responds with grace, hope and love. The PAL Ministry and other Covenant Partners of CUMC also support the Forsyth County Opioid Task Force.”

The guiding principles of PAL are confidentiality, respect, acceptance and support. “I am so blessed to work with the other facilitators in our PAL group. They are amazing, beautiful, compassionate and talented people. Each meeting has a set of guidelines that we follow, from the way we open the time, to sharing of what is going on with a loved one. It’s important that not only do we share about our loved ones and what substance they battle, but that there’s an educational part also. We have a different topic each week focused on helping a parent on how to confront a challenge that they’ve never had before. We never tell anyone what they should do, but we do offer suggestions.

Everyone experiences this journey at their own pace and is supported by the group regardless,” Deborah stated.

Members of PAL quickly realize that they are not alone and that is a big relief in and of itself.

When you are the parent of an addicted loved one, often you take the guilt and blame on yourself, but PAL helps parents see the truth behind addiction. “Adult children make their own decisions and, as parents, we aren’t responsible for that.

To be able to help your addicted loved one, you have to be healthy yourself which comes from surrounding yourself with people who are going through the same situation as you are. We want parents to know there is hope, there’s always hope, and it comes from educating ourselves and trusting in God,” commented Deborah.

The Love and Hate of Spring Home Repair

The moment March 1st arrives, we often start daydreaming about warmer temperatures, the arrival of flower buds, and the transition from dreary winter to beautiful spring. Our anticipation rarely includes home repairs, which can be difficult, time-consuming, and dirty. Tackling spring repairs does not have to be achieved in one month. Consider marking your 18-month calendar with the essential list of tasks.

SPARKLE AND SHINE

Soon enough, you’ll be able to not only open the curtains, but feel the warmth from the outdoor breezes, too. Begin by washing your windows on the inside and out. Wipe down the molding, too.

If possible, take down your screens and simply use a rag and a bucket of water with dish soap.

CHANGE THE BATTERIES

Looking up is not natural when walking through a doorway, but one of our households’ most important life-saving devices, the smoke detector, needs maintenance. Marking your calendar as a reminder to change the batteries twice a year ensures you won’t have to trust the proper function of your detectors’ during an emergency.

DRYER EFFICIENCY

With the goal of easing monthly power bills, you may discover your sheets require more time to dry. This is one indication to clean the vent leading from the dryer to the outdoors. Make sure large quantities of lint are not trapped within the grooves; or, it may be time to replace it with a new coil. With this task achieved bi-annually, consider using wool dryer balls. The bounce of six balls opens up air pockets and allows your items to dry much faster!

CRACKS AND LEAKS, OH, NO

Leaks can enter your home not only through the roof, but in cracks established in your basement walls. To eliminate worry for future problems, seal the walls with a waterproofing concrete masonry paint. If cracks are noticeable, you can also repair with a liquid concrete repair kit.

GUTTERS

One of the least favorite jobs is standing on a ladder while eliminating leaf mold and twigs from your gutters. While you are assessing, check the condition of your gutters and whether the clips are secure. Repairs can be quite simple and inexpensive if taken care of quickly. Depending on the type of debris found within, it may be wise to cut limbs near your house to ease the cleaning process, and prevent house damage.

Additionally, a way to save your time and money (if hiring a service), is to research types of gutter covers. Most often, the pieces snap into place. Install one side if you are skeptical. It may make a substantial difference to this bi-annual dirty job!

PATIOS & DECKS

One of the most used social locations is the deck or patio. Begin by determining if you have loose boards, uneven flooring, chipped paint, or loose nails. A trip to the home improvement store can also include looking for decorative hanging baskets, new pots, and

beautiful perennial flowers, in addition to shopping for a paint or deck stain. A power washer, set at a low stream, is one useful tool to ease the task of cleaning the deck. Since the tool is out, why not wash your house siding, too!

STANDING WATER

Prior to fertilizing or seeding your yard, look at the areas, especially near your home, which may attract pools of water. The goal is to force water away from your house. Sloping soil at a slight downward angle, or filling in shallow impressions or holes will help the cause. Sprinkling grass seed, once the ground temperature warms, will complete a multi-step task.

DONNING THE TOOL BELT

In comfortable temperatures, it’s wonderful to have the freedom to walk outside and witness new growth and discover repairs. Wearing a tool belt with handheld tools such as clippers or scissors, pruners, a hand trowel and hand rake will increase your efficiency and decrease the amount of time your yard chores consume.

Spring repairs and yard work do not have to be an overwhelming task. Mark your calendar.

A Commitment to Save More Cats & Dogs

In 1941, the Forsyth Humane Society [FHS] was founded and has acted as an advocate for the unwanted and uncared-for cats and dogs in our community. Although the FHS has made great strides at their facility in assisting cats and dogs in finding their forever homes, there are still many that go unadopted in our county. To increase the save rate for shelter animals in Forsyth County from 36% to 90% by the year 2023, FHS has assumed care of the cats and dogs at the county shelter, as of January 8, 2018. FHS is overseeing the intake, sheltering, care, fostering and adoption of the cats and dogs at the shelter. From the outside, this may seem like quite a task to undertake, but Sarah Williamson, Executive Director of Forsyth Humane Society, believes it is achievable with the organizations that are in place currently, all working together for the same goal.

“Our goal is to bring the euthanasia rate in Forsyth County down from 64% to 10% in the next five years. It is doable and has been done in other parts of the country from Los Angeles, CA, to Austin, TX and Richmond, VA. Closer to home, Asheville, NC once had a euthanasia rate of 80% and now it is below 10%. We aren’t taking this on ill-advised; we are educating ourselves about what has worked in these other areas and putting those ideas to work in our community, with many other groups, including local rescues, to make this successful,” said Sarah.

With the now two locations for the FHS, 4881 Country Club Road, and 5570 Sturmer Park Circle, known as FHS University North, both in Winston-Salem, NC, intake of animals as strays or owner surrenders will take place at the FHS University North location.

“Between the two locations, we have 300 beds available for cats and dogs, combined. To better manage our number of beds, we are asking that owners who need to surrender their pets do so by appointment. Many times, a cat or dog comes to us because of a change in a family or a job issue and if the owner could give us a little time, the animal’s chances of finding a home increases. There are also resources available, if there is, for example, a financial strain, free food is available, some vet services are offered, and low-cost rabies clinics are also available. People just need to

know that there are ways to help them keep their animals if that is an option,” Sarah commented. With so much going on at the two locations, Sarah said that the work of the FHS couldn’t be accomplished without the volunteers who do many jobs to further the cause.

“There are so many ways our volunteers help us every day. From fostering animals, which gives us extra beds to take in more animals, to transporting animals to other areas or states for adoption, to walking dogs, loving the cats, cleaning the facility, greeting visitors and working with prospective adopters, doing laundry…nothing would be possible without our volunteers. Each day we staff 60 volunteer hours, and the volunteers can go online and schedule the time they have to give. Some volunteers help by donating food, toys, leashes and cleaning supplies. We have volunteers from every age and time of life. For children who are under 16 years old, we have a program where they can volunteer with their parents starting at age 12. It’s rewarding to see an animal leave us for his forever home, it’s why we do what we do,” stated Sarah.

Doing what they do not only takes volunteers, but donations and funds raised by community events like the Mutt Strut 5K. “Our 3rd Annual Mutt Strut 5K is a sanctioned, timed race, which is also a family and dog-friendly event. Last year we had over 300 runners/ walkers, over 150 dogs and one brave cat participate in this event.

We raised $26,000, helping with our operating expenses, including the care and feeding of the cats and dogs. This year we are thrilled to have Bob King Automotive as our presenting sponsor and the continued support of the Town of Lewisville. It’s a great way to have fun with your family and friends, 2- and 4-legged, some who started their journey with us, support Forsyth Humane Society so we can continue to do what we love. Leading Girls to a Promising Future:

Lead Girls of Nc

Helping girls find their voices and their power to build confidence, make good decisions and grow to be successful women is what drives Joy Nelson-Thomas, the founder and executive director of Learning Everyday Accomplishing Dreams (LEAD) Girls of NC. Now in its second year of operations, LEAD Girls of NC is a one-of-akind nonprofit that has provided leadership development to over 300 local girls ages 11 to15.

“Right now, our programs serve 160 girls each year. We hope to double our reach and expand our program to at least 300 girls each year within the next two years,” says Joy. “With so many local girls facing bullying, increased social and peer pressure, struggles with difficult home lives, and challenges at school, there is an incredible need for LEAD—and we have a tremendous desire to help every girl who needs us.”

CREATING SELF-LEADERS FIRST

Dedication to developing girls’ leadership skills as the gateway to helping them find their voices and coax out confidence, selfreliance, and independence makes LEAD Girls of NC a unique program for girls. It all starts with helping girls better understand themselves and learn to communicate openly and honestly.

“My purpose when I started LEAD Girls was to equip girls to flourish and thrive.

That’s still what motivates me and what drives our programming,” says Joy. “When you teach listening skills and respectful dialogue, and you show that defying peer pressure and trusting your decision making are choices you can make, what you’re teaching girls is how to be leaders, starting with leading their own lives. It’s powerful and empowering for middle school girls to develop and nurture these skills.”

LEAD Girls’ leadership program meets bi-weekly in one-hour workshops for eight weeks.

Weekday sessions are hosted at two local middle schools twice per year, in the fall and spring.

A community-based workshop series, open to girls from any local school, is offered on weekends at LEAD’s program space in downtown Winston-Salem.

Workshops use an evidencebased curriculum that facilitates discussion, guides introspection, challenges thinking and inspires girls’ creativity, in a framework that is scientifically tested and proven effective for changing behaviors and developing leadership skills.

“If that doesn’t sound like fun,” laughs Joy, “You’re wrong! It really is fun for the girls. We are thrilled to have over 95% of our participants report that the program is fun and engaging, and they don’t want it to end after eight weeks.”

LUCK IS NOT ENOUGH TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY

Is it simply luck that determines which preteen girls thrive and which girls never seem to get ahead because of countless challenges? That’s the question Joy asked herself when she started LEAD Girls, and it’s one she poses to the organization’s partners, supporters, and volunteers. She knows from firsthand experience it’s not luck. As a first-generation American and victim of bullying, Joy has faced—and overcome— adversity in its many forms, thanks to a strong support network.

“It’s so important to create a support system for girls in the Forsyth community. Our program equips girls to achieve greatness academically, emotionally and creatively—which is great, but we also need to be their proverbial village and raise strong girls together as a community.”

Forsyth county girls could really use a ‘village,’ Joy believes. Her research uncovered alarming statistics about our community and the struggles local girls often face as they experience poverty in childhood and into adulthood. Without another path to choose, many girls seemed destined for poverty and a lifetime of unfulfilled dreams. The Winston-Salem metropolitan area ranks second in the nation for experiencing the greatest increase of suburban poor people living in concentrated poverty areas. Children who grow up in poverty-stricken neighborhoods are much more likely to be in poverty as adults. In Forsyth County, 27.5% of children between 5 and 17 are in poverty (exceeding the state average of 21.5% and the national average of 19.5%).

While the perils of youth poverty are well-documented— including poor academic achievement and higher school dropout rates—so, too, are the successes leadership development can produce. Engaging girls in leadership development as they are maturing into young women is proven to improve schooling outcomes, help girls to avoid risky behaviors, and empower them to chart a different course for their futures.

“LEAD Girls hopes to transform girls’ lives,” says Joy. “We give them the foundation they need to recognize their worth, cultivate and trust their decision-making abilities, and find their voices to counter bullying and challenge peer pressure. When even one girl recognizes her worth and sets her sights on achieving her dreams, we’ve made a tremendous difference.”

Heels or Flats?

Do you remember your first pair of high heels and what a big deal it was that you got to wear them?

Compared to the high heels worn today, they were tame and not exciting by any means. The heel was maybe two inches and there was no platform, just a regular leather sole. Still, it was a learning curve to walk in them without looking like your ankles were wobbling all over. Babies learned to walk more surefooted that my first attempt in heels. Scrubbing the soles of new heels with sandpaper to rough them up gave some degree of safety on slick floors and a fighting chance to stay upright. Yes, I loved wearing heels. When you’re five feet nothing, you need all the help you can get. So I pretty much lived in heels through high school and for years after.

I well remember a visit to the mall with my little girl, ironically to get her new shoes. When the clerk told her to walk to the door and back, well, she walked to the door fine, looked over her shoulder and took off running. And there I went after her in my suit and heels, chasing her around the usual mall-walkers and into the store across the walkway. When we returned, me panting and red-faced, her quite happy that she had new shoes on, the clerk’s only remark was that they seemed to fit her well.

Then the Candies era of heels became popular.

Remember those? In some ways, they were a prerequisite to today’s platform heels. I could not walk in those. I bought one pair and wore them to church with really no practice run. Big mistake! That was the only time I walked into church in shoes and out carrying them. I think I gave them away to a friend at work the next day.

My love of high heels was waning. I’d worn them so long that it was painful to walk in any other type of shoe. I had to start wearing flats more often to stretch out the tendons and reduce the pain level.

Honestly, I don’t think I could navigate in the platform heels of today.

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a

particularly graceful person.

Frankly, I can trip over nothing (and have, more than once). My more spectacular claim to fame in this area was the day the tip of my shoe got caught on the edge of a sign waiting to be hung in the office. It got caught just enough to send me sprawling on the floor. Not the way to end a meeting by the way, tripping while exiting an office.

Flat shoes suddenly seemed to be much more stylish for some reason. Maybe because I’d finally given up on wearing heels.

My posture seems better since I’m now in flats all the time and more conscious of standing straighter. Granted it’s sometimes hard to reach the top shelf in the grocery store; of course, the healthy stuff is always up there out of the line of sight. However, I am undeterred. I’ve been known to stand on the bottom shelf to reach what I need (to the embarrassment of family members – you know who you are). Or, I just ask someone taller to help out and get what I can’t reach.

People are happy to help.

So, I have embraced wearing flats. Some practical, but more fun – like

my pink and blue striped pair, the pink with little hearts all over, madras, metallic, paisley.

They’re fun to wear and they don’t hurt at the end of the day.

That’s my heels to flats story. One extreme to the other. As Forrest Gump explained, “Momma always said there’s an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes.

Where they’re going; where they’ve been.”

Evolution of the Working Woman

From being restricted to housework and peddling as retail vendors, to stepping outside the house to become lawyers, surgeons, and business owners, women have marched long miles and fought their way into the workforce. Here is a brief, but substantial look at how the working woman evolved throughout the centuries.

First, it’s important to know the main job held by women throughout history—across many cultures—is “hawking.”

This means women would go out to be public vendors or go door to door selling goods and clothing items. This was likely the only other work they could do outside of the house before it became socially acceptable to work the same jobs as men.

ANCIENT ROME

Women were forbidden to hold positions of power (societal leaders) because they were regarded as “inferior to men.”

Nor could they speak or vote in political assemblies. Instead, they were expected to keep the house.

AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT

This was when things changed drastically for women. They found out that they were as competent as men! Perhaps because of Mary Wollstonecraft’s book, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. This groundbreaking literature embraced women’s rights, became a hit and made society gradually accept women into the workforce.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

At a time when manufacturing and steam engines became widespread, women joined men in factory work to help owners earn more profit. They also began working in textile mills for only $3 per week. But once the women got married, they would stop working at the mills, perhaps because the husband became the worker and the provider for the household. Eventually, men began to feel threatened by women working beside them in factories, and wanted to fight against their declining pay and status in the workforce. This led them to unionize and stand up for their rights. Women noticed the movement and created their own union, Lowell Female Labor Reform Association (LFLRA), which made a big impact on society because, at this time in history, women barely spoke in public. LFLRA stood up for higher wages and shorter working days among women and…it worked! Women continued to enter the workforce in the USA and other industrialized countries over the course of the 19th century.

POSTBELLUM

After the American Civil War, hundreds of thousands of men were killed and injured which forced more women to enter the workforce to fill factories and other maledominated jobs.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION

The big economic depression in the 1930s caused a major setback for the working woman. The loss of jobs made unemployment rates crawl up to 25 percent, and male-dominated unions revived the idea that only men should work. Despite this tumultuous era, married women managed to find work. The percentage of working women increased 25 percent!

WORLD WAR II

When American men left for war, women took on their jobs to keep companies active during the war. Six million American women entered the workforce and took on men’s jobs. After the war, though, women had to leave their jobs to make room for veterans. But women remained in the workforce with jobs in retail, nursing, teaching, and in offices. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 created a huge change for the working woman. The act outlawed discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, and nationality. This made women seek employment in various fields such as law enforcement, construction, and finance.

Very soon, the act led to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (allowing pregnant women to find work), which then created even more working ladies!

TODAY

Currently, as of 2017, there are over 74 million women in the workforce, and approximately 47 percent of American workers are women! Women also own about 10 million businesses. There are more women in management positions now than ever before, and they are taking on previously male-dominated careers such as engineering, politics, criminal justice, and surgeons. Working mothers have also become a standard with 70 percent of mothers in the labor force; not something you would see much of many years ago.

For centuries, we working women have been on the rise and will continue to exceed expectations and fight for our rights, because we will always have something great worth offering.

A private oasis in your very own backyard brings images of floral colors and tranquil moments. Just the mere thought of opening a door and walking onto stones or lush grass, hearing birds and blocking out noise has the potential to lower stress. The first thought may be a fence, an automatic screen of wooden boards standing five to six feet in height.

Would you feel too enclosed by those defined corners and borders? Are you willing to add scraping, sanding, and painting to your annual maintenance? Alter your mindset slightly and you can achieve privacy through a green screen of living plants, comprised of trees or shrubs, and a decorative element of vines. While you may have to compromise on the time period, there are wonderful selections available that are both easy to grow and an inexpensive alternative to fencing.

Plus, you can choose more than a plant to achieve beauty and maintain a happy relationship with your neighbors, on all sides!

Here are a few options to consider:

TREES

While arborvitae and the Leyland Cyprus are popular options for a privacy fence due to its ability to create a dense hedge, the variety, especially of arborvitae is important. Depending on your available space, the “emerald arborvitae,” for instance, can extend up to 15 feet tall and spread to four feet at maturity. Evergreen trees used for privacy screens are low maintenance, but you will have to wait until the tree grows to the desired height.

SHRUBS

The green shrub typically requires pruning and bi-annual care. If you hope to create a low maintenance “oasis,” try a native viburnum,

which, depending on the variety, develops a flower, often not fragrant, resembling either a hydrangea or a snowball-like-cluster. The viburnum is a low maintenance shrub, and would make a wonderful privacy screen. One variety to consider is the snowball viburnum bush. (Other types of shrubs to consider are the weigela, the French lilac, and the Nikko Blue hydrangea!)

VINE

For areas you may want to conceal, vines provide an ornamental appeal as well as a softer look. Whether the vines are held by wooden beams connected with a heavy gauge wire, an arbor, or trellis, the “right” vine can bring a more natural look to your yard. Make sure your structure is solid because these plants can become quite heavy as they mature.

Be aware of how the vine attaches. In vines such as the clematis or climbing hydrangea, a small stem will extend until it can twirl around a support, such as a wire or a branch.

Vines that do not have support, such as the climbing rose, will wind themselves through and around their support system without guidance. (Be wary of climbers such as Virginia Creepers, that use adhesive pads to attach to flat surfaces. Removing can damage any surface.)

WILLOW’S ALLURE

Saving the best for last, I present the willow. The unique term “fedge” is a combination of a fence and hedge. The process begins by making a small hole to insert the willow cutting at an angle, which resembles a semi-large rod. Two rods will be tied at the top together, creating a lattice fence. As the willow grows, you will be able to manipulate the design and the height. The overall appearance is quite appealing. One of the most attractive aspects of this type of privacy fence is a fast grower. Willow can be cut and planted.

(Willow rods are inexpensive; yet, can only be purchased online. While 35 rods are needed for every 10 feet, you’ll be able to use cuttings for the purpose of planting.)

INVASIVE SPECIES

It is important to research the tree, shrub, or vine first to ensure it is the right dimensions for your location. Be careful when reading wording such as “rein it in with frequent pruning.” Private hedges, morning glories, Wisteria, the trumpet and the chocolate vine, are prime examples of fast growing species that can quickly become invasive, and take over your yard, and your neighbors’ yards.

If you enjoy the walk from door to backyard, creating a beautiful space takes time. Thoroughly research the trees, shrubs, and vines you choose to plant. While beautiful in color of leaf or flower, the “right” choice will make the difference between your time and contentment!

Did you know it is important to alter your budget based on the month? For example, maybe you add a little more in the expense category rather than savings for the month of December, or you figure you’ll spend more money during the summer months for things such as vacations.

There is no better time than the first day of the month to set your updated budget. Read below to see the 9 things you should include in your March budget.

5. Tax Season: April 15th will be here before you know it. When getting your taxes filed, always make sure to include any expenses or fees that may be involved.

1. St. Patrick’s Day: On March 17th, many people join in the green fun and celebrate the holiday just like the Irish do! According to research, 52% of Americans will spend an average of $37 per person on food, drinks, and more for their St. Patty’s Day events. If you plan on having a good time, add it into your budget.

6. Springtime Maintenance & Home Repairs: Now is the time for annual spring cleaning and that can mean making those long needed home repairs. Home maintenance can be either expensive or cheap. Do your research and determine if you need to hire a professional or can DIY a repair. However, you’ll need to include the expenses for both avenues.

2. Spring Break: Whether or not your kids’ Spring Break is in March or April, it is time to start planning and saving. Even if you don’t go on a trip, it is nice to have extra money for fun staycation activities. Also, if you need extra childcare during this time, you will need to factor out how much extra money you’ll need.

7. Spring Consignment Sales: While you are doing your spring cleaning, get rid of things you don’t need anymore, such as clothes, shoes, and books. Then, sell them at consignment sales and consignment shops. This tip doesn’t take money out of your wallet – it will hopefully add some money to it!

4. Summer Vacation & Camp Fees: Yes, I said it. We are in March and I’m already talking about summer.

However, it is never too early to start saving and planning for the various activities your kids and family will take part in. Also, if your kids are attending summer camp or childcare, register as soon as possible and remember that with those registrations, come deposits or full payments.

9. End of the School Year Expenses: Too early to talk about the end of the school year? Your budget will thank you for getting a head start on preparing for the many end of the school year expenses, such as teacher gifts, projects, and more. After all, May and June are only a few months away!

Don’t forget to add in the above expenses to your March budget. On March 31st, you’ll be glad you did and will hopefully have more money than you started the month with.

Flash Mobs Imagine yourself sitting quietly at the mall food court minding your own business. Someone just stands up and begins to sing, a guitarist starts playing, and someone starts swaying to the music.

What do you do? Leave? No, no! Stay and enjoy the show! You’re in the midst of a flash mob!

These spontaneous outbursts of song, music, or dance are fascinating for many reasons. First, they’re a surprise to everyone not part of the show, they are mostly always upbeat, and they just make you feel good. Even watching them on Facebook or YouTube puts a smile on your face. Watch a few and see if you don’t end up smiling by the end.

Flash mobs are a fairly recent phenomenon. The first one was in Manhattan in 2003, and they’ve been showing up all over the world ever since.

From train stations in Europe, college campuses, grocery stores, malls, and as surprises for weddings, reunions – basically anywhere people gather.

A flash mob is supposed to look spontaneous, but of course requires substantial pre-planning, depending on the number of participants and size of the event. The Internet has many sites that offer suggestions on how to plan a flash mob (such as flashmobamerica.com).

The sites all stress that pre-planning is most critical. If you decide to set one up consider these points:

• Select the best date and time for the majority of the folks who will be participating.

• Decide where you’re going to perform.

If it’s part of an already planned event (like a wedding), let the wedding coordinator or one of the family members in on the surprise. Otherwise, get permission from the location to stage the event. You may also need permission to use the music as well, depending on copyright laws.

• Watch some videos and see how others create these events.

• Get the word out via social media for volunteers to participate or send out a mass email to your contact list. I’ve seen calls for volunteers to sign up on Facebook several times.

• Are the participants going to be dressed similarly or just in street clothes? One for Ohio State had the participants in various collegiate t-shirts, sweatshirts, in cheerleader uniforms, or wearing a school logo backpack.

• Designate someone as the choreographer so that everyone knows their cue to join in the song or dance.

• Rehearse – rehearse – rehearse. This may look spontaneous, but a lot of preparation goes into them to create something fun to share.

And, let’s face it; that rehearsal time is also part of the fun.

• Be sure someone tapes the event; you’ll want to share it after all that hard work.

• Most flash mobs are fairly quick – two to three minutes. People stop to enjoy the show and, once it’s over, go back to whatever they were doing.

Check some of the most famous flash mobs on YouTube. You’ll probably find a few favorites to re-visit, such as: • The coffee shop: This one has young kids and teenagers with a few playing guitars who sing, “So This is Christmas” to the diners. They enter at certain points of the song or just stand at their tables or in the line.

• The Hallelujah Chorus at the food court: This is a favorite of mine. One woman who looks like she’s on the phone begins as a solo and people all over the court join into the closing crescendo to the delight of everyone watching. These voices are amazing and it’s like being at a concert – they’re that good.

• There are a few great wedding flash mobs on Facebook. One was a group of 15 students performing “Goin’ to the Chapel” for their teacher as a gift. Scattered throughout the church, one boy stood for the opening lines, then others, and finally five guitarists entered and as they finished, the group left down the side aisles finishing the song as they exited. What a wonderful gift to give someone. Another one on Facebook this week was at an Irish wedding where one of the parents surprised the couple with a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

As much as I enjoy seeing these on social media, someday I hope to see one in person. That would be such a fun treat! If you know of one coming up in our area, let me know!

“Alexa, can we talk?” Typing & swiping may take a back seat Before delving into this month’s column here is a trivia question. Which of today’s popular voice-enacted virtual assistants has the most market share, Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri or Google’s Assistant? The answer is at the end, no peeking. The title of my column asks, “Alexa, can we talk?” Unfortunately, the answer, for now, is no. None of the current artificial intelligence (AI) devices (aka smart devices) engage you in a human-like, back and forth conversation. We ask questions and smart devices, give answers, usually pretty good ones. While smart devices are fun and helpful, I assure you that future interactions will be much better.

Modern-day AI research began in a workshop on the campus of Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956 by a small group of mathematicians and scientists who also coined the term artificial intelligence. They believed then, as researchers do now, that human intelligence can be precisely described and a machine can be made to imitate it. Traditional goals of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, language processing, perception, and the ability to manipulate objects. General intelligence is among the field’s most ambitious long-term goals. Early scholars predicted that a machine as smart as a human would exist within a generation and they were given millions of dollars to make it happen. However, the task proved much harder than anticipated and difficult years followed because computers just weren’t ready. Over time that changed, and today, computers process massive amounts of data with breathtaking speeds.

Computer progress supercharged AI research. Consider your cell phone. For most of us, they have become an extension of our hands and brains - we simply can’t live without them. As a point of interest, your smartphone is millions of times more powerful than the room-filling IBM mainframe computers NASA used to send astronauts to the moon in 1969. Those computers cost $3.5 million each and were as big as cars. Think about that the next time you feel like griping about the cost of your smartphone.

Today several smart device makers are working on AI projects.

Take Google, for example. Inside the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, Google has a diverse group of creative writers working full time on giving Google Assistant a dynamic character and personality.

Lilian Rincon, director of product management for Google Assistant, was recently quoted in a national magazine and explained the concept to her interviewer like this, “It’s, can I just talk to Google like I’m talking to you right now?” Making small talk and staying fully engaged with your smart device is what she meant – communicating with a machine that has the intelligence of a human.

Going from Q&A to a conversation is no easy task. However, they are working hard to get there, and this is great news because as consumers, we benefit from their hard work. It will be exciting to see where AI is five to ten years from now. In the meantime, smart devices will continue to evolve, and we will receive timely upgrades to software operating systems running them. Here is the answer to the trivia question. Amazon dominates the U.S. voice-controlled speaker market with its Echo-brand being used by about 70% of all voice-enabled speaker users. Google is second with about 24% market share, and Apple and Microsoft follow far behind.

It was a bit surprising to learn Apple’s Siri is not on top. After all, Siri paved the way for the others when it was introduced on the Apple iPhone 4S in 2011.

Finally, a prediction. Within a few years, voice recognized AI devices will be as widespread as smartphones and like smartphones, we will take them for granted. If you want another opinion, just ask Alexa. LOL
