Welcome back to the Fancy Fork – your seasonal produce insight and farm-style recipes that are made to satisfy.

Summer has officially arrived! So, you know what that means… big, juicy heirloom tomatoes are at their peak! But besides our summer beloved, you’ll also find melons, nectarines, plums, rhubarb, strawberries, figs, blueberries, and avocado in season. For our veggies, you’ll notice more onions, swiss chard, summer squash, garlic, celery, cucumbers, carrots, green beans, and a variety of radishes.

To celebrate the first of our heirloom tomatoes, we’re going to make a Savory Southern Tomato Pie with fresh basil, freshly grated cheeses, and a very flaky pie crust. Tomatoes are a summer powerhouse that’s incredible for glowy skin and heart health. Studies have shown tomatoes may prevent certain cancers, good for diabetes, may prevent urinary tract infections, reduce high blood pressure, and even improve vision.

SAVORY SOUTHERN TOMATO PIE

PREP. TIME: 20 MINUTES | COOK TIME: 40 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 60 MINUTES | SERVINGS: 10

INGREDIENTS

1 unbaked pie crust, store-bought or homemade 4-5 large tomatoes, sliced 1 tsp. salt /3 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped 2 T fresh chives, chopped ½ cup green onions, chopped 1 garlic, minced

1 cup grated mozzarella cheese ¾ cup grated sharp cheddar cheese ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt, or mayonnaise Salt & black pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375F. 2. Line a baking wire rack or plate with a few sheets of paper towels.

Add the sliced tomatoes in a single layer, sprinkle with salt and let the juices be drawn out of the tomatoes for 10-15 minutes. Pat dry with extra paper towels.

3. Roll out the pie crust to line a 8-9” pie plate. Crimp the edges and poke holes in the bottom of the pie crust using a fork. Bake for 15 minutes.

4. In a bowl, combine the grated cheeses, chopped basil, chives, green onion and garlic. Mix well. Add the Greek yogurt or mayonnaise, then stir to combine. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

5. Layer half of the tomatoes into the baked pie crust, sprinkle half of the cheese mixture on top, then repeat with remaining tomatoes and cheese mixture.

6. (Optional) Add an additional layer of crust for a lattice top. Brush with an egg wash.

7. Place the tomato pie in the oven to bake for 30 minutes until the cheese is lightly browned on top.

8. Let the pie rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Keeping It Real WHAT IF YOU COULD REMAKE YOU?

Given the chance, how many of us would take a do-over—not an adjustment but a complete reset, a chance to shed the past and its labels, a life entirely new? (Be honest! Most of us wouldn’t hesitate!)

I didn’t realize it then, but growing up, I got a small taste of remaking myself.

At home…in church…people knew my story. They watched my family unravel.

My father left. My mama started carrying the weight of raising four children with limited resources. That reality shaped how people saw me.

In school, though, most people didn’t know my story. I wasn’t “the girl from the broken home”; I was simply… me. I could participate, achieve, and belong, out from under the shadow of what I had walked through.

In hindsight, what felt like opportunity was also an escape. I wasn’t just staying busy. I was searching for a version of myself untouched by pain and shame.

Many of us know that longing. The desire to move forward is real. But the past has a way of lingering, doesn’t it, warping our thoughts while influencing our decisions and direction too? It tries to own who we are because of who we used to be.

We want a new chapter but keep running into old narratives. (Can I get an AMEN?!)

What I didn’t realize then but know in high definition now…real transformation doesn’t come from erasing the past. It comes from being reshaped right here in the present.

God speaks to us as powerfully as He spoke in ancient times. He urges us with these words: “Rise to your feet!”

He seeks to do a purifying work in us in THIS season! As we allow Him to have His way, God promises… “I am remaking you… into a people invincible.” (Micah 4:13) We can feel so overlooked and worn down that “invisible” seems more fitting than “invincible.” I hear you!

Study God’s process described in Micah. Remaking occurs through refinement, through pressure and stretching, in seasons that feel uncomfortable, even unwanted. In such seasons, NONE of what you’re facing is punishment. It’s preparation!

The language of threshing and refining feels unfamiliar to our technological age, but I promise, it speaks to where we are. Anything that cannot sustain what lies ahead must be removed. Not everything we carry is meant to continue with us. (Read that again! WHEW!) Fear, insecurity, approval-craving… they shape our lives and limit our capacity to grow into all God dreams for us. Refinement burns away those things that can’t go where He’s taking us. This separation doesn’t diminish us! It strengthens us!

Friend, we must reframe how we process difficult seasons. What feels like loss may actually be freedom.

What feels like pressure may be development. What feels like delay could be intentional preparation.

With God’s help, we become more stable, more grounded, and more capable of carrying what comes next.

Stop saying, “Why is this happening to me?” Start asking, “God, what are you building in me for my next chapter?” He’s not doing something to you; He’s doing something worthwhile in you!

If you give Him free reign to do the work, your internal growth will steel your capacity to stay steady through hard things.

God is not building in you a life free from challenge. He’s developing a depth in you that no longer shakes at what used to break you! You’ll gain strength not determined by circumstances. You’ll carry confidence not rooted in what others think. You’ll possess endurance that weathers life’s storms with courage.

Y’all! THIS is what it means to be REMADE by God Himself.

You’re not stuck, and you’re surely not what you once were. As you are refined and remade by God, you become someone stronger than you’ve ever been!

Will you allow God to remake you? He offers a far better “doover” than you’ve ever imagined! I’m living proof!

When Cancer Speaks

I have been a big fan of Forsyth Woman magazine for quite some time, truly appreciating its focus on elevating businesswomen of our community. As a female financial advisor in a male-dominated industry, I value initiatives that encourage driven and successful women to collaborate and empower one another. I always imagined that one day I would share my business journey – a path that took me, an immigrant from Belarus who arrived in the U.S. alone in my early 20s with just $100 to my name, from working in human rights and international relations to building a family and a successful practice in financial planning, retirement and wealth management.

Never did I expect that the story I would be sharing would have nothing to do with my success. Instead, it would be something deeply personal – an experience that many women may face in their lifetime: a cancer journey.

At 47, with a long history of responsible choices, years of being vegan and a reasonably active lifestyle (albeit with on-and-off commitment to exercise), I believed I was in good health. Yes, I had begun to notice hormonal changes, but I was reassured that these were a normal part of aging and thought little of them.

So, when I felt a lump on my neck, I assumed it was just another temporary change that would resolve on its own. After a few weeks, I decided to have it checked.

In early January, our family was shaken to its core when I was diagnosed with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

With no family history of cancer, strong blood work and no significant medical history beyond three C-sections many years ago, the diagnosis came as a complete shock.

I had heard that we face a 40–50% lifetime risk of cancer, but like many people, I never truly believed it would apply to me.

What struck me even more was how many individuals in online cancer communities were far younger – in their teens, 20s and 30s. That realization brought a mix of emotions: gratitude (continued on page 20)

The foundation of my daily routine contained: • Gratitude and a positive mindset • Journaling to track habits, treatments and progress • Intentional nutrition • Time in nature • Mindfulness and meditation • Gentle movement such as yoga and Thai chi • Acupressure practices • Targeted supplements and more For the first two months especially, I documented everything – what I ate, how far I walked, the practices I followed and even simple health markers like weight and blood pressure. This gave me a sense of control during a time that can often feel uncertain.

If there is one thing this experience has taught me, it is that health is not something we can take for granted – and it is not something we should begin prioritizing only after a diagnosis. The small, consistent habits we build over time become the foundation we stand on when life presents unexpected challenges.

My hope in sharing this story is not to offer a prescription, but a perspective: that even in the most difficult moments, there is space for intention, empowerment and resilience. And that, perhaps, by starting to build these practices now, you may one day find yourself better prepared – strong in body and steady in spirit – no matter what comes your way. that I was at a stage of life where I no longer had to worry about having children and also relief that I was still young enough to endure treatment and recover with strength.

After the initial shock, we made a conscious decision: rather than allowing fear and anxiety to define this chapter, we would approach it with hope, gratitude and intention. Less than six months later, my most recent scan shows no evidence of cancer, and I feel stronger and healthier than before – even after completing chemotherapy.

In the early days following my diagnosis, I immersed myself in learning.

There is no shortage of medical information, research and shared experiences available through online communities. Understanding the disease, treatment protocols and expected side effects was relatively straightforward. What proved far more difficult was finding reliable information about integrative and holistic approaches that could support the body during treatment. Much of what I found came with disclaimers about limited evidence or a lack of large-scale studies.

Fortunately, my interest in holistic health began long before my diagnosis; and from the very beginning, I knew I wanted to combine conventional treatment with integrative approaches to strengthen my body throughout the process.

I also explored alternative paths, including holistic-only cancer treatments and integrative clinics both in the U.S. and abroad. While some centers offer comprehensive programs, they are not covered by insurance and can cost anywhere from $70,000 to $350,000. After careful consideration, we chose to follow the standard course of chemotherapy while integrating holistic strategies independently.

Very intentionally, my focus of the past few months has been fixed on wellness rather than cancer, all aspects of it: spiritual, emotional, physical, intellectual, environmental, financial, occupational and social.

HIBACHI CHICKEN & FRIED RICE

For June, I wanted to share a summertime classic meal that we make almost weekly at the house. It’s great for a crowd, fairly simple and a pretty quick cook – hibachi chicken and fried rice on the griddle.

Ingredients: • 1 pack (6) Boneless/Skinless Chicken thighs – sliced into ½-1 inch cubes • Marinade: S&P, 2 T olive oil, 2 T soy sauce, 2 T sesame oil, 1 T rice vinegar, couple squirts of sriracha (if you want some spice) and ½ cup of Bachans Japanese BBQ Sauce (or any kind of teriyaki sauce) • Jasmine Rice (1-1½ cups for serving 2 people) – I usually like to make around 2-2½ cups to have some leftover fried rice with the chicken for the next day • 2-3 eggs • Some kind of green – zucchini or broccoli (or both) work well for this dish Instructions: 1. First, you’ll want to cook the jasmine rice the day before – or at least a few hours before you’re cooking the rest. I always cook it in a rice maker, then let it sit in the fridge for a day before. I also like to go ahead and marinate the chicken with the above ingredients the day before, so when you’re ready to cook the next day, there’s a lot less prep!

2. Note: You could cook all of this on a couple of large skillets or one of those indoor breakfast griddles, but I always love using the blackstone for this. You have so much room and different heat zones for a smooth, easy cook.

3. When you’re ready to get to cooking, preheat the griddle to medium heat, add on your chicken and veggies and keep stirring frequently. Cook until everything looks nice and done. (Chicken thighs this way usually take around 10-12 minutes on medium heat.)

4. While the greens and chicken are cooking, melt a couple pats of butter

and lay down your previously cooked rice on the griddle top, creating a square-ish shape that isn’t too thick so it can get crisped up nicely.

5. Add your eggs to the griddle, scramble them up and, once done, stir the egg into the rice.

6. Next, add a good amount of soy sauce and a few dashes of sesame oil.

7. Keep stirring the rice around and add more soy sauce or sesame oil, as needed.

8. The fried rice should also take around 10-12 minutes. Once it starts to look darker brown and crispy, give it a quick taste test.

9. Pull everything off and combine for a delicious hibachi at home!

A Housekeeper’s Lasting Gift

I’m amazed how the memory of some folks stays with us. It’s been well over a decade since I’ve seen “Mary” who worked with us for about 18 months at our Connecticut country inn. But oh, do I remember her! To say that she had a presence is an understatement.

Standing at about 4’10” and weighing less than 100 pounds, her spirit defied her size. She arrived to “interview” with me wearing a lovely summer dress and a gorgeous, lightweight sweater handmade by her European aunt.

As we talked, connected and talked some more, I learned that Mary was a naturalized American citizen with a middle school-aged daughter, a husband who worked on a farm and a past that included exposure to the arts and competence in at least three languages.

Why she was sitting before me in search of a housekeeping role at the peak of our busy season was not my business.

I immediately took a liking to Mary, and I think the feeling was mutual. Keeping housekeeping staff was always a challenge.

People found higher paying jobs, moved away or, occasionally, simply stopped showing up. My gut told me to give Mary a chance, despite the seeming disconnect between who she was and the work I needed her to perform.

My gut proved worthy of my trust as Mary arrived the very next morning in a tee shirt, capris and tied back hair – very much ready to get her hands dirty. Zip, zip like a bumble bee, she moved from task to task with her nimble hands. As the days passed and Mary gained quick competency, I found myself looking forward to seeing her, to chatting – even briefly – as I worked my writing job upstairs in our private quarters. Having developed employees in corporate settings for nearly three decades, I observed that Mary was indeed the rarest of the rare: competent, proactive and as flexible as they come. In innkeeping, things change constantly: a group of four expands to eight, cancellations are filled by new bookings, a pipe bursts in the main parlor, a squirrel appears in the kitchen or a guest refuses to leave well beyond checkout time. The ripple effect is hard to describe unless you’ve been there.

But Mary, with a wealth of life experience, the emotional maturity of a wise old soul and the work ethic of a true leader, could pivot on a dime. If only she could be cloned!

There is another quality that Mary possessed that is more difficult to describe. It’s one I think was innate to her, one she brought to everything she touched. I’ll call it “finesse.”

Whether she was plating for breakfast, fluffing the pillows or even, yes even, folding the laundry, it was as if she was preparing for a photoshoot. Of course, not everyone has this ability, aesthetic or “eye.” In my experience, it is indeed rare! But here’s the thing: this particular ability to finesse isn’t really the point.

It’s Mary’s willingness to bring the very best of her gift, of what she had to contribute, to her housekeeping role.

It makes me wonder how many people bring their special talent, their superpower, their defining gift to what they do and how they live.

Do I? Do you?

One day, Mary arrived at the inn and shared some hard news: both of her parents, afflicted with Alzheimer’s, were now living with her. She was to be their caregiver and would have to phase out her hours until I could find someone else. I would find someone else, but I would never find another Mary, and I knew that.

I will never forget Mary. I often wonder how things worked out, and I will always appreciate the gift of her gift as I continue to pray for her.

Cool Recipes When it is Too Hot to Cook

With last summer bringing record highs to the Piedmont area, everyone is bracing for impact. Regardless of what one does during the day, the one thing we all have in common is how summer can zap everyone’s energy; especially those also in charge or putting delicious meals on their family’s table.

While this season does bring heat to our area, it also provides everyone with iconic summer flavors – from summer vegetables like tomatoes, watermelon and sweet corn, to delicious seafood, most notably shrimp. The good news is there are effortless recipes, perfect for a lazy summer evening. Read on for three cool, fresh and simple recipes sure to beat the heat for everyone; most of all the chef!

BRUSCHETTA SUMMER PASTA SALAD

This recipe features two of my personal favorite ingredients – pasta and tomatoes! Featured in “RecipeTin Eats,” an online recipe blog out of Sydney, Australia.

INGREDIENTS 1 box of penne pasta 2 lb. tomatoes ¾ cup of basil ½ cup fresh parmesan (to sprinkle at end) ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves ½ cup extra virgin olive oil DIRECTIONS 1: After adding a hefty amount of salt to the pasta water, boil pasta (penne works best for this recipe).

2: While the water is boiling, make the dressing by mixing up olive oil, balsamic vinegar and minced garlic cloves.

3: Chop up tomatoes and put in a small bowl with the juice.

4: Drain your pasta, then put it back into the same pot (save washing up). Give the dressing a good shake, then pour 2/3 of it over the pasta. Stir well, then leave for 15 minutes until it cools.

5: Transfer the tomato and all the watery juices into a large bowl. Pour over all the remaining dressing, then gently toss. Set aside for 10 to 15 minutes for the flavors to meld.

6: Pour the tomato juices over the pasta salad, then toss the pasta.

7: Add the tomato into the pasta, make sure to do this last so the tomatoes do not get mushy. Add basil and parmesan.

GRILLED SHRIMP WITH HERBY GARLIC BREAD

Nothing says summer like fresh seafood. This Food52 recipe takes a total of only 20 minutes.

Note, this recipe will require you to grill.

INGREDIENTS 1 pound of jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined 4 garlic cloves, finely grated 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley (finely chopped) 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (finely chopped) 3 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 1 teaspoon of kosher salt ½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes 1 small ciabatta loaf, halved crosswise DIRECTIONS 1: In a medium bowl, combine the shrimp, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt, herbs and olive oil.

Set aside 1 tablespoon of the mixture. Toss to combine, coating the shrimp on all sides. Thread shrimp onto a pair of skewers to anchor them in.

2: Get the grill ready. If using a gas grill, heat it to high.

3: Arrange the skewers over the hottest zone, and drizzle a little olive oil over the skewers. Grill for three minutes, or until the edges start to appear opaque. Swap skewers as you turn them over for even grilling. Grill for one minute longer before transferring the skewers to a clean sheet pan.

4: Spread the reserved marinade from the bowl across the surface of the bread. Drizzle olive oil across the ciabatta, and slather the marinade and oil to coat.

5: Place ciabattas face down over the flames.

Grill the bread for 20 to 30 seconds. Rotate it and repeat.

6: Remove shrimp from the skewers onto a serving platter and serve alongside the grilled bread. Drizzle a little more oil, sprinkle salt and eat at once.

SWEET CORN AND WATERMELON SALAD

This last recipe features the two most notable flavors of summer – watermelon and sweet corn.

Considering this recipe is also ready in 15 minutes, this is surely a safe bet for a quick summer dinner.

INGREDIENTS 6 cups of cubed watermelon 2 ears sweet corn ¼ cup fresh lime juice (you may not need it all) ½ tsp. sugar 4 leaves fresh basil 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese DIRECTIONS 1: Husk the corn and wrap in wet paper towels.

2: Microwave for about three minutes.

Plunge the hot corn into an ice bath to cool down and stop cooking.

3: Slice the kernels off the cooled ears of corn.

4: Combine the watermelon and corn in a serving bowl.

5: Combine the lime juice and sugar, and stir to dissolve.

6: Drizzle the lime juice over the salad, just enough to moisten everything.

7: Top with shredded basil and feta cheese, and serve immediately or chill until needed.

How HOT GIRL HOUR at Washington Park Crossfit Helped Me

fter writing for Forsyth Magazines for more than five years and working closely with Forsyth Woman Editor Brooke in assisting with the Forsyth Magazines Podcast, I was well aware that she and her husband, Gavin, owned and operated Washington Park CrossFit, but I had never dipped my toes into CrossFit waters myself. On the tail end of a tumultuous spring due to a bad breakup, I think Brooke’s “spidey senses” must have been tingling because her invitation for me to join WPC’s Hot Girl Hour last July came at an opportune time. I jumped at the chance for healthy social interaction and a few good workouts.

Additionally, anyone who knows Brooke can attest to the fact that she is nothing short of a role model to women, so I concluded that anything she endorsed had to be worth looking into.

Prior to Hot Girl Hour, I had experience in bodybuilder-style lifting with heavier weights throughout my 20s, then transitioned into lifting lighter weights in an interval-style approach in my 30s in order to slash time and combine cardio and resistance training because – well, let’s face it – I no longer had the attention span or desire to use the Stairmaster for 20 to 30 minutes to then follow that grueling cardio workout up with 30 minutes of repetitive weightlifting. If I’m being completely honest, I was always a bit wary of CrossFit because I was afraid of injuring myself, but CrossFit has taken athletes by storm over the last decade, and I was excited to see what the hype was about.

As it turns out, my interval style workouts served as a great baseline for the high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts that ended each night of the program. After a warmup (which was just the right level of challenging), followed by a lesson on various Olympic lifting techniques like deadlifts, cleans and front squats, my fellow ladies and I were sweating by the end of the session when the workout of the day (WOD)

was over. Sessions ran twice per week for six weeks, which was the sweet spot between effectiveness and avoiding overwhelm and fatigue for those inexperienced in resistance training.

The coaches at Washington Park CrossFit are diligent in making sure each participant’s form is up to par in order to prevent injury and to ensure that everyone is gaining the maximum benefit from each movement performed. As someone who struggles with social anxiety, working out in a group environment was initially intimidating and sometimes made it difficult for me to follow instructions on how to perform certain movements out of fear of embarrassment. Fortunately, the WPC coaches were patient and attentive and did their best to explain each movement until my thick skull calmed down and absorbed the information.

Aside from breaking a sweat and gaining an insight into what joining a CrossFit gym would entail, Hot Girl Hour served its purpose socially for me in a time where I desperately needed a bit of light in my life. The ladies in the class were warm, friendly and worked well together. I even made a friend whom I would have loved to keep in touch with more often had I not been moving to Wilmington within a couple of weeks of the six-week program ending. After completing the program, it became apparent why the WPC community is so tight knit and supportive of each other. Hot Girl Hour was a brief window into the high quality coaching, camaraderie and calorie burn that a Washington Park Crossfit membership reaps. In fact, I still utilize a few of the techniques I learned from the program into my private workouts. Prior to Hot Girl Hour, I never did burpees; however, the program illuminated just how quickly burpees elevate my heart rate and add intensity to many of my interval workouts that are starting to plateau.

Nancy Stewart | Glass Artist This month’s featured artist, Nancy Stewart, is a glass artist whose colorful, whimsical creations are designed to spark joy and make her viewers smile. Through pairing recycled and found objects with her mixed media glass work, she transforms everyday materials into playful works of art. paths you take on your journey. I’ve spent time applying the skills I’ve learned on each path into a new art form.

What is your secret for carving out time to truly be creative?

This is not an issue for me, honestly. The way my mind is wired, I’m always visualizing new ideas throughout each day. My problem is carving out time to clean the house!

Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?

I was commissioned to create two hearts, one for each granddaughter. The base was a heart wood cutout, and I placed family heirlooms on the hearts including the father’s drafting supplies, class rings, Girl Scout pins, family dishes, even marbles from a favorite game. The heart was then covered with an epoxy resin, and it was such a special project.

What are you working on that excites you right now?

Currently, I’m painting layers of glass with enamel paints. The three layers of glass are layered on each other, the sides are dammed to prevent spread, put into the kiln and then fired. This creates depth in the piece, almost like a hologram effect!

How would you describe your work?

My artwork consists of glass-on-glass mosaics, jeweled animals and fused glass pieces. My glass-on-glass mosaics and jeweled animals are made with recycled items, including old picture frames, found objects and scrap glass. After each design is complete, epoxy resin is floated on the surface.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists, especially those at the start of their careers?

I say this to every artist but especially those at the start of their careers – never give up and always create!

What was your journey to developing your artistic skills like?

This is a very hard question for me, as I have always enjoyed creating art. It started with photography when I was in high school and progressed to a minor in art and has continuously evolved from there.

Fast food consists of meals prepared quickly at restaurants and purchased at drive-thrus or counters, focusing on speed, uniformity and immediate consumption outside the home – such as burgers, fries, pizza and fried chicken.

Convenience foods include a wider range of timesaving options like pre-packaged, frozen or ready-to-eat items primarily from grocery stores that require minimal heating or assembling at home. Both types generally have lower nutritional value and higher caloric intake than homecooked meals.

THE HISTORY OF THE FAST FOOD INDUSTRY

The U.S. fast food industry as we know it began in the 1920s with White Castle, but truly exploded after World War II (1940s-1950s). It was fueled by a booming American economy, the rise of automobiles, suburbanization and changing family dynamics that required quick, affordable meals. With more people increasingly working outside the home, eating out shifted from being a luxury to a necessity. Fast food restaurants thrived by providing speedy, affordable meals that suited the needs of busy workers and families, leading to the rapid expansion of chains tailored for on-the-go lifestyles.

By the mid-1970s, competition in the fast food sector intensified, sparking the so-called “Burger Wars” of the 1980s and 1990s. Restaurants responded by updating their interiors and introducing features like indoor seating and the now-famous drive-thru. To appeal to families, they developed special kidfriendly spaces and meal deals (themed, branded toys packaged with fast food).

BURGER ORIGINS – FROM ROME TO THE USA

The hamburger stands out as the quintessential fast food choice. Its origins are debated, with claims stretching from ancient Roman minced meat patties to “Hamburger Charlie” serving meat between bread at 19th-century fairs, to White Castle’s early 20th-century “slider” burgers. Regardless of its exact beginnings, the hamburger’s popularity soared in postwar America. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, burger restaurants were opening nationwide, including the now-famous McDonald’s, launched by Dick and Mac McDonald in 1948 in San Bernardino, California. By 1958, McDonald’s had sold 100 million burgers, revolutionizing American dining habits. Their success paved the way for other fast food chains, such as Burger King – proudly known as the “Home of the Whopper” – to enter and shape the market.

FORSYTH’S FIRST FAST FOOD RESTAURANT

Burger King’s story in America began on December 4, 1954, when James McLamore and David Edgerton launched their first restaurant in Miami, Florida. The company’s roots trace back to 1953 in Jacksonville, where it was originally called “Insta-Burger King.” After reorganizing, McLamore and Edgerton expanded the brand nationwide, choosing the name “Burger King” to evoke a sense of quality and royalty. In 1957, they introduced the Whopper – a quarter pound, flame-grilled burger with all the fixings, priced at 37 cents – which quickly became their signature item, standing out against the smaller, less expensive burgers offered by competitors. By 1962, Burger King had grown into a national chain, thanks to a pivotal purchase by Miami franchisees in 1959. This expansion brought the Whopper and the Burger King experience to North Carolina, with the first location in the state opening on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem that same year. This restaurant, with the “Sitting King” logo, was part of the chain’s early growth in the southeast and marked Forsyth County’s introduction to fast food. The rest is a whopper of a successful fast food tale with more than 232 Burger King restaurants in North Carolina alone and more than 19,000 locations around the globe.

The Quiet Ways My Dad Shaped Me

ast month, I wrote an article titled “You’re Just Like Your Mom!” and this month, in honor of Father’s Day, it only felt right to write one for my dad. Similar to my mom, in some ways I’m just like him… and in others, we couldn’t be more opposite.

a year eventually became the place he got to retire and live full-time. My parents have lived there for almost 10 years now, and it’s hard to get him to leave. As a fellow homebody, I get it.

I’ve got his blue eyes and long legs— appearance-wise, it’s pretty obvious we’re related. I can be soft-spoken like him, and I definitely get my more introverted qualities from him too. But beyond the physical traits and personality similarities, there are so many deeper things I’ve learned from watching him my whole life.

I also vividly remember him always washing the dishes after dinner. At the time, I thought it was just part of his routine, but really, I think it was his way of trying to get his hands clean after a day at the body shop. When you work with your hands like that, they carry the evidence of it. His hands were always rough and stained in a way that instantly told you: this is a hard-working man.

One of the biggest lessons? The value of hard work.

Another thing my dad taught me was the value of exercise.

That man works HARD. He owned a body shop for my entire childhood, and long days, weekends, and even holidays were just part of life. Looking back now, I realize how much sacrifice came with being a business owner, but as a kid, it was simply what he did. He showed up every single day.

For as long as I can remember, he rode his bike around town for an hour every single day around lunchtime. If you lived in Clemmons, you probably saw him biking at some point. It wasn’t negotiable, it was just part of his routine. Looking back now, I’m sure it gave him a mental break from work, but I also know taking care of his health mattered a lot to him. Especially during a time when people weren’t constantly talking about wellness and exercise the way they do now, I think that level of consistency is really admirable.

The one exception each year was our Fourth of July vacation. He’d close down the shop for the week, and we’d all pack up and head to Lake Norman. To this day, some of my favorite childhood memories are from those lake weeks—tanning on the pontoon boat, being out on the water, and seeing my dad fully relaxed and happy. That man LOVES the lake. And it makes me so happy that the place he looked forward to escaping to once

And speaking of health… my dad has always been extremely particular about what he eats. He loves a sweet treat just like I do, but overall he’s very disciplined

with his diet. He doesn’t eat pork or red meat (despite my occasional attempts to convince him moderation is okay), and he’s always open to learning more about health. If I suggest he needs more protein or should start drinking electrolytes during the summer, he’s immediately on board.

He also taught me the importance of taking care of your things.

Some of our biggest arguments when I was younger were about me not keeping my car clean. My dad has always been meticulous about maintaining everything he owns. He’s basically the definition of the ideal homeowner, car owner, boat owner—you name it. While that trait maybe rubbed off a little more on my brother than me, I still like to think I’m pretty good at taking care of my car and home… and that is 100% because of him. (Sorry, Mom)

I sure do love that man.

Growing up with two entrepreneur parents and a dad who was so far from the stereotypical golfing, office-job dad gave me such a unique childhood experience…one I’m incredibly grateful for. Instead of taking me to soccer games, he took me riding dirt bikes. Instead of teaching me through long lectures, he taught me through his daily actions—the consistency, the hard work, and the quiet way he showed up every day.

He’s truly the best there is, and I’m so grateful he’s my dad.

This year marks a milestone birthday for Lewisville Laser & Aesthetics! The medical aesthetic practice, owned and operated by Dr. Leigh Ringer Summer, turns 18 in October, a fact which has Dr. Summer feeling both profoundly grateful and a bit nostalgic.

“It’s hard to believe our practice is officially an adult this year!” Dr. Summer shares. “What a joy it’s been to be a part of this community for almost two decades, and to have established lasting relationships with our patients built on trust and excellence.”

After working in private practice as a family physician for over a decade, Dr. Summer began Lewisville Laser & Aesthetics as a natural outgrowth of holistic care for her patients.

“So many women had aesthetic concerns they wanted addressed but didn’t know where to go for clear direction and medically sound treatment,” she says. LLA was born out of Dr. Summer’s desire to provide aesthetic medicine services for her patients that were equal parts art, science, and commitment to an experience defined by excellence.

Thankfully, her longtime friend and coworker in private practice, Kristen Murphy, PA-C, shared that vision, and in June 2026 | 47

“Each of our patients is unique — age, skin type, genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle, aesthetic goals — and it’s incumbent upon us to create a plan of care that’s as unique they are,” Kristen explains.

Customized care is a hallmark of the LLA experience and includes a wide variety of services offered by both injectors and the team’s two licensed aestheticians, Haley Vazquez and Krista Lunsford.

Dr. Summer also stresses the importance of continuous training on the nuances of aesthetics, particularly when it comes to injectables.

“At the end of the day, only an expert should ever come near your face with a needle!” Dr. Summer says. She and Kristen, along with Nurse Injectors Alisha Childress, RN, BSN, and Shelia Anderson,

RN, prioritize continuous training with nationally and internationally recognized experts. Additionally, the LLA staff utilizes ultrasound imaging to assist with filler placement, as well as offering treatment with hylenex, an FDA-approved enzyme that dissolves injectable dermal fillers.

“Sometimes our patients love what we undo almost as much as what we do,” Dr. Summer explains, especially about hylenex, noting it enables patients who’ve had unfavorable filler results elsewhere to “reset” and then go forward with more modest treatment.

You are the daisies growing in the cracks of concrete, moss reclaiming abandoned buildings, wild buttercups in the meadow. What I mean is, you persist, no matter how many times work or school or family tells you that you can’t grow here. You can. You do. You grow anyway.

Did you know that, every day, daisies choose themselves by opening at dawn and closing at dusk? They save themselves from the dew and cold, predators and fungi.

You’re like this, too. You know when to rest and when to wake. You know what you feel in your gut. Listen to it, your body, this cosmic wisdom. Do whatever is necessary to bloom.

And moss. Moss is ancient, older than trees, me and you. Moss broke volcanic rock to create life for itself where life otherwise was impossibly barren. Your voice is moss: ancient and wise, defensive of your well being. You create life that’s vibrant and green, soft to the touch yet sturdy, as you listen to the sound of whatever walls you must break to find the forest.

And buttercups. They put down roots that are immune to mowing, roots that regenerate from fragments, roots that do not require fertilized soil to grow but simply need any place, anywhere, to turn their shimmering faces to the sun. You may feel broken. You may feel unseen. But those pieces still love you. They expand your horizon, under and below ground. Wherever you are, you attract the sun like a halo on your entire being. Light sees you, every golden petal.

You can continue. You already are continuing. Remember this. The daisy of you, the moss of you, the buttercup of you. You make people stop and notice life, how it prevails, always. You prevail, always. Keep saving what’s yours: your life. Keep growing where you please, where you’re told there is no growth here. There is growth here. Look how much you’ve already made your world yours, look at all the ideas you have only to nurture to give rise to.

There may be too much rain today or none at all. But you are made from the same independence as nature; you are nature, and you will make it. You’re already making it. Your life, the world, they’re beautiful because of you.

Aging Out Grace and Grieving

bout six months ago, I wrote an article describing an abrupt and unexpected fallout with my oldest and closest friend. It definitely wasn’t a dissolution I wanted, so it’s safe to call the rupture one-sided. I’ve spent months racking my brain trying to figure out where I went wrong and torturing myself with self blame. When I obsessively ruminate, I know it’s simply my brain wrestling with the bleak reality that I can’t control what she feels about me or how she behaves, and I somehow need to accept that.

One day recently, I was a bit more tormented than normal (I also partially blame PMSrelated mood swings) and decided to reach out for the first time in six months asking why she handled things how she did. When she didn’t reply for nearly a day, my protest behavior kicked in and I sent a longer form message airing out my feelings because I could no longer hold in what I had been trying to suppress for months. I knew it was unlikely that she would respond, but speaking my mind was the only tool I had in my toolkit to throw at the situation when everything else felt out of my control. Even though my family and support systems were kindly reminding me that she obviously wanted space, I felt betrayed and tossed aside, and I didn’t want to go down without standing up for myself in whatever way I felt I could.

I spent the next 48 hours in shock that she was truly not responding after nearly three decades of close friendship. I was crying every hour or two and was confused as to why these strong emotions were flaring up so

intensely six months later. The two-day crying bender felt like it came out of nowhere, yet hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m bummed about the situation but still distracting myself with travel plans and laughter in whatever way I can find it. Then, one day, out of the blue, I’m destabilized and sobbing?

As someone who has been fortunate enough to have made it 33 years without experiencing deep grief related to losing a loved one, I’ve been asking myself a series of questions ever since. Is this what people talk about when they say grief isn’t linear?

Am I allowed to even call this grief when she’s still alive? For six months, I still had hope that we would come back together in time for a conversation like she suggested when she was exiting the dynamic, although she didn’t clarify what she meant when I asked followup questions that day. Since I had known her since we were in kindergarten, I told myself that she would never say that if she didn’t intend to follow through. I suppose I was in denial and my denial finally broke.

While it’s technically always possible that, in more time, she may come around, I have lost a lot of hope in very little time recently that she will keep her word. Feeling betrayed on top of feeling abandoned is a shock to the system, and I had hoped that I’d be much more healed this long after the initial rupture than I actually am at this point.

Having lost a best friend that you believed (and still believe) is a great person feels like a personal failure and a statement about your own character. I can try to give myself

grace for my mental state during the time our friendship imploded due to a failed toxic relationship exacerbating my anxiety and trust issues around that time. In her own words, it was the most toxic man she’d ever witnessed me dating throughout our friendship and she was deeply concerned about my self abandonment tendencies throughout. Even though I know I was doing the best I could with the headspace I was in at the time, it’s still nearly impossible to feel like this wasn’t all my fault. If I had only been less needy or less intense, I wouldn’t be sitting in this. If I had only shut up and given her more space when she was going through her own issues too, there may have been hope. If I can’t keep someone as understanding, kind, patient and loyal as her around, how bad of a person does that make me?

Her absence is a dull ache. Things happen in my life, and I want to update her but can’t. I remember some of our inside jokes that now feel sour and painful to the mental touch. I recently saw she’s in a new relationship now and, as much as I want to be happy for her, trying to be happy for her hurts right now. I know deep down I’ll always want the best for her, but being left to stew in my own self doubt puts a damper on those well wishes for the time being. Perhaps this is the anger stage of grief. As uncomfortable as it is to admit that I am struggling to genuinely be happy for someone I called my closest friend, perhaps going through an angry stage may shift my focus from self blame to beginning to believe I actually didn‘t deserve feeling tossed aside like this no matter how annoying I can be at times.

Main Character Outfits

You are the main character of your life.

I know you know this, yet when we’re struggling (and who isn’t struggling right now?), we often feel like someone else is in more control of our future than we are. But I want to take a moment to remind you of how powerful you are, even when it feels like your livelihood and dreams depend partly on someone else. You’re you, and that makes you powerful and worth acknowledging.

One way to acknowledge yourself – to help yourself feel seen or to see yourself in a new light – is through whimsy. Especially the whimsy we’ve been taught, as adults, to “grow up” from. Do you remember who you wanted to be when you grew up? Do you remember which characters you dressed up for as Halloween or had on your bedsheets as a kid?

Last Halloween, I dressed up as a sun goddess; even though I wore a medical boot and had been in one for a month or more at the time. I almost didn’t do anything for Halloween. I was too upset over my foot injury and the time it was taking to heal. But when I don’t feel like doing something is when I most need to do it. Are you the same?

After some encouragement from friends and knowing I’d regret it if I didn’t do it, I started by looking for goddess costumes online.

While I saw some gorgeous ones, I could almost feel their cheap plastic material through the screen, and based on their prices, it didn’t feel good to potentially spend nearly 50 dollars for something I’d wear once.

What did feel good, however, was ordering an orange pair of fairy wings.

And thrifting on a whim one day after work.

I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for, but I figured I’d know it once I found it.

I ended up with a few pieces: a floral gold maxi dress, a long cardigan with a celestial design in autumnal colors and a golden gemstone crown clearly made for Halloween but only a dollar. I completed the outfit with my wings and a brown boot I already owned.

On Halloween, I wore the dress to work. I almost didn’t wear the dress because it’d show my medical boot, which felt like an eyesore. But the boot? The boot added backstory. Maybe my character had been in battle and won, with only a foot injury to prove it.

My outfit was mine. It wasn’t a mass produced one-size-fits-all costume but something that really fit, something that made me feel powerful, beautiful, magical. I loved it! Plus, it was practical, featuring items I’d wear again for less than the price of a premade costume.

I recently saw a quote on Instagram by @lilly_prinz that said, “Decisions are portals.” This quote resonates with me so much because it’s true.

Portals, being the whimsical things they are, often lead to other worlds.

And decisions are how we get there – how we find portals, how we make portals, even to something as simple as having a better day.

It can be hard to remember that we’re the main character of our lives, but whimsy helps. And we don’t have to wait for Halloween.

Want to be a mermaid? A barbie? A goddess? A spy? A witch?

A butterfly? An assassin? A superhero? Another character who beats all odds and looks glorious doing it? The outfit you wear doesn’t have to be obvious to anyone but you; it can be inspired by a character’s energy. Or the outfit can be obvious, an invitation for others to have fun and play in their empowerment, as well.

Either way, you’ve got this and I believe in you.

AUDIT WHAT’S WORKING (REMOVE THE BUSY WORK)

Now what is getting likes or views but actually turning into inquiries, bookings and sales. Is there content that tends to lead to conversations in your DMs? Do specific platforms drive more

The hardest part of moving to a more minimalist marketing strategy is honesty.

Reducing and removing efforts around content that isn’t helping your business is a strategy in itself. Your goal isn’t to show up everywhere doing everything - it’s to be effective and efficient.

SIMPLIFY YOUR CONTENT EFFORTS Business owners who have been in business more than five years have seen that content has become a full production studio worth of effort for some entrepreneurs. Why You’re Still Hungry, Craving Sugar and Storing Belly Fat

For many women, the missing piece has nothing to do with food choices or workout frequency.

Two powerful and often overlooked lifestyle factors may be quietly working against every effort – sleep and stress. And, as the research shows, these two are more intertwined than most people realize.

THE HUNGER HORMONE CONNECTION The body regulates appetite through a sophisticated hormonal system. The key players are leptin, ghrelin, cortisol and NPY (neuropeptide Y). When sleep and stress are out of balance, all of them shift in the wrong direction at once.

Leptin is the “put the fork down” hormone, signaling to the brain that the body has enough energy. Ghrelin is the “growling” hormone, literally what makes your stomach growl before a meal. When sleep is cut short or stress runs high, the communication between the brain and fat tissue (where leptin is stored) breaks down.

The signal is still being sent, but the brain stops receiving it clearly. The result feels like hunger even when the body has plenty of stored energy.

At the same time, ghrelin spikes higher and stays elevated longer, driving more intense hunger earlier in the day.

WHAT POOR SLEEP DOES TO YOUR BODY

Even a single night of shortened sleep disrupts this communication. Insulin sensitivity drops, blood sugar swings become more pronounced and the crashes that follow send the body reaching for quick energy – sugar, refined carbohydrates, anything that brings blood sugar back up fast. Studies show that women sleeping only four hours consumed up to 300 more calories the next day compared to nights with adequate rest.

Here is where sleep and stress become impossible to separate. Cortisol, when chronically elevated, competes with melatonin for the same receptors.

High evening cortisol blocks melatonin from docking, disrupting the hormone responsible for restful sleep. Poor sleep then keeps cortisol elevated, and the hormonal consequences compound with every night it continues.

HOW CHRONIC STRESS DRIVES BELLY FAT

Cortisol follows a natural daily rhythm, peaking in the morning and tapering throughout the day. The problem develops when it stays chronically elevated, which given the cortisol-melatonin connection, is also a sleep problem.

High cortisol activates neuropeptide Y (NPY), one of the most potent hungerpromoting signals the body produces.

Elevated NPY drives cravings specifically for calorie-dense comfort foods – sugary, salty, high-fat combinations that feel almost impossible to resist under stress. This is the biological basis of stress eating, and it has very little to do with emotional weakness.

Cortisol also instructs the body where to store excess fat, and under chronic stress, the answer is around the midsection.

This visceral fat is both stubborn and metabolically significant. Elevated cortisol increases insulin resistance, making it harder to access stored fat while making it easier to store more.

For women in perimenopause through postmenopause, this compounds further.

Declining estrogen reduces the body’s natural buffer against cortisol’s effects, intensifying visceral fat accumulation and blood sugar dysregulation. This helps explain why belly fat can feel particularly resistant during this transition.

FOOD NOISE AND WHY IT GETS LOUDER

Food noise describes that constant mental chatter about food – thinking about the next meal, fantasizing about something sweet, feeling like hunger is never fully resolved no matter what was just eaten. When sleep is short and stress is high, the brain’s reward centers become hypersensitive to food cues while impulse control becomes suppressed.

Recognizing this as a hormonal response rather than a reflection of habits or discipline is often the first step toward quieting it.

WHERE TO START

Addressing these root causes often moves the needle faster than any nutrition adjustment. For sleep, aim for seven to nine hours with a consistent wake time even on weekends, dim lights an hour before bed, limit screen stimulation and cut caffeine by early afternoon. Alcohol, though it may feel relaxing, fragments deep and REM sleep and increases hunger the next day.

For stress, daily low-intensity movement, especially an outdoor walk, is one of the most accessible cortisol regulators available. Box breathing (inhale four counts, hold four, exhale four, hold four) activates the parasympathetic nervous system within minutes, lowering cortisol and creating space for melatonin to do its job come evening.

When sleep is protected and stress is actively managed, hunger quiets, cravings ease and the body finally has the hormonal conditions it needs to cooperate.

JENNA SMITH Jenna Smith is the Co-Founder and Assistant Director of Monkey’s Wish Foundation, a nonprofit she launched alongside her fiancé in honor of their beloved ferret, Dook— affectionately known as Monkey—who passed away after battling Disseminated Idiopathic Myofasciitis (DIM). Through the foundation, Jenna works to raise awareness of this rare and often fatal autoimmune disease in ferrets, while advocating for access to life-saving treatments that can give these animals a second chance. Her passion for animal welfare extends well beyond her nonprofit work. Trying New Things: The Tiny Art Exchange

ave you ever had a pen pal? I don’t mean an internet friend, but someone who takes the time to write you a letter, not expecting an immediate response and sometimes no response at all. They just want to tell you about their life, and they want it to be personal and handmade.

H

I think in the age of email and texts and social media, we’re all nostalgic for how we once communicated with one another. I know I am. I’ve never had a pen pal, but I’ve always wanted one.

One night on Instagram, I came across a post promoting something called The Tiny Art Exchange. It was serendipitous. I saw it the night before the registration deadline. I didn’t hesitate.

I signed up. I knew this was an opportunity I needed to experience. While not a pen pal, it was close enough.

The Tiny Art Exchange is a project by the Creative Guts Podcast creators, where each artist who registers sends a piece of their art, no larger than 5x7, to a stranger randomly assigned to them by the hosts. You also receive a piece of art from a

stranger in return. It’s completely random, and you aren’t assigned to the person who sends you art but to another artist all together.

I didn’t expect it’d be so exciting to send art to someone I don’t know, but it was! I sent mine to a woman named Kaitlyn in New York. All I knew about her was her name and that she also likes art. I’d recently made two mini collages with this exchange in mind, so I wrote a card and put both pieces into the envelope. But, then I found myself feeling attached to the art I’d made. The more I thought about the collages, the more I wanted to keep them. Isn’t it funny how attached we become to the things we make?

Though I made two new collages with Kaitlyn in mind, they didn’t feel right. I ended up sending Kaitlyn the two original collages – one of tincture bottles filled with leaves and a micro-poem: “to explore on foot, echoes.”

The second collage was made of cloth that looks like a landscape, featuring a bunny

and glitter glue to demonstrate where he’d roamed. His echoes, so to speak.

The day I sent my art, I received art by a woman named Leanne who’d sent a handmade card with an origami dress and a collage of lemons titled “zest.” Both pieces are me, speaking to my interests in fashion design and nature. Both are serendipitous.

The same day, before coming home to this parcel, I’d written a poem about lemons for my Instagram with the lines: “when life gives you lemons, understand this is a sign to change your life, to write poetry to the dripping sun, your solar plexus.”

Life did, in fact, give me lemons. Serendipity.

An opportunity to let go and receive.

I think these kinds of exchanges are what we need more of as a society, especially for us as women. Less division and more art. More moments where we give and receive. More moments where we realize the serendipity of truly connecting to each other.

There comes a moment, after countless prayers, disciplined patience and consistent transformation when God will finally say, “It’s time.” As an ambitious woman in business, I know you want to sustain what God places in your life. Have you thought about what that looks like? It’s a level up, and you will take on a higher level of thinking, strategizing, delegating or, in other words, stewarding.

Picture yourself about to go into the boxing ring: God and His angels are hyping you up and reminding you that you have prepared for this very moment. Your job is to protect your body from punches and find opportunities to gain the upper hand using the training you’ve been given. That’s what stewardship is in business.

PROTECTING WHAT HE’S BUILT In your walk with God, you’ve developed into a stronger, more resilient version of yourself. And, sometimes, the mind is the last to realize that you are capable of new things. In Joshua 1:9, God commands strength and courage because you should have faith that He is with you wherever you go. When you’ve entered new territory, there will be weapons formed against you to dismantle what you’ve accomplished, but your assignment is to be steadfast and dodge the obstacles that try to take you out. If you remember everything God says that you are, you’re equipped to do this gracefully.

Practical things like journaling and meditating on scripture are powerful practices. You can revisit your journal entries and scriptures that helped you through tough times to remind yourself that God will finish what He started (Philippians 1:6). You are the vessel He is working through, so protect your mind and body to stay sustained.

FINDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPANSION Expansion does not always mean increased revenue, although it can if that’s God’s will. In this point, I am talking about Kingdom expansion. You are a steward of the business God gave you, so how are you uplifting people along the way? The customers and team involved in your business should feel the warmth and presence of God.

the enemy, essentially gaining the upper hand, because more people are being introduced to your God-sustained business. The community you’re building will pay attention to how you navigate obstacles and keep God in the center of it all.

When you bounce back from challenges that make others close shop, it will cause your followers to put their faith in God for their own lives. Be sure to tell them if God did it for you, He can do it for them, too. Don’t measure your business success by the revenue, but by the impact.

Evidence to look for is how people speak about your service or products. When people are inspired and feel valued, they find every opportunity to tell others. Word of mouth remains the most effective form of marketing, and if you’re growing in awareness, you are defeating

And just like that, you’re a force to be reckoned with, and you’re equipped to handle that for which you’ve been praying (Psalm 30:7). The revenue needed to sustain your business is a byproduct and effortlessly magnetizes to your business.

God knows what you need, and He will always provide. It’s a beautiful mix of faith and blessings. So, keep praying and stewarding well. I have faith in you.

From Boomers to Gen Alpha: A Lighthearted Guide to Every Generation

Every generation grows up in a different world, shaped by the technology, trends, music, and chaos of their time. As a result, each age group develops its own personality, habits, slang, and stereotypes. Are all the stereotypes true? Of course not. But they are entertaining. Here’s a fun look at the generations that make up today’s world — and the quirks they’re famous for.

THE SILENT GENERATION (BORN ROUGHLY 1928–1945) The Silent Generation grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, which explains why they’re often known for resilience, discipline, and practicality. They tend to value hard work, good manners, and saving absolutely every plastic container “just in case.”

Stereotypical quirks? They can fix almost anything, still write checks at restaurants, and somehow know the exact price milk should cost. They also mastered the art of saying a lot with a single disappointed glance.

BABY BOOMERS (1946–1964)

Boomers were raised during postwar prosperity and major cultural shifts like rock music, television, and the moon landing. They’re often associated with ambition, career-focused lifestyles, and the belief that you should “just walk in and ask for a job.”

Boomer stereotypes include loving phone calls more than texting, forwarding suspicious Facebook posts, and reminding everyone how much cheaper college used to be. They also have an unmatched ability to start stories with, “Back in my day…”

GENERATION X (1965–1980)

Gen X is often called the “middle child” generation. They grew up during the rise of cable TV, arcades, and mixtapes, and many were famously “latchkey kids” who came home to empty houses after school.

Their reputation? Independent, sarcastic, and low-maintenance.

Gen X stereotypes include surviving on caffeine and cynicism, refusing to care about trends, and being weirdly proud of knowing how to program a VCR. They’re also the generation most likely to say, “Whatever,” and actually mean it.

MILLENNIALS / GENERATION Y (1981–1996)

Millennials came of age alongside the internet, smartphones, and social media. They witnessed the transition from floppy disks to streaming services and probably remember both dial-up internet and TikTok. They’re known for valuing experiences over possessions, embracing “side hustles,” and turning hobbies into personality traits. Stereotypically, millennials survive on iced coffee, nostalgia, and group chats that never end. They also allegedly “ruined” everything from napkins to diamonds — at least according to headlines.

Millennials are perhaps best known for their love of avocado toast and saying things like, “I saw it on Pinterest.”

GENERATION Z (1997–2012)

Gen Z grew up fully online. For them, social media, memes, and instant information have always existed. They’re often described as digitally fluent, socially aware, and incredibly fast at detecting anything remotely “cringe.”

Their stereotypes include communicating almost entirely through memes, using slang no one over 30 understands, and having the attention span of a 15-second video. Gen Z also treats TikTok as both a search engine and a life coach.

At the same time, they’re known for being entrepreneurial, adaptable, and surprisingly good at editing videos.

GENERATION ALPHA (2013–PRESENT)

Generation Alpha is still young, but they’re already developing a reputation. These are the kids growing up with AI, tablets, smart homes, and voice assistants from birth. Many learned to swipe screens before they could tie their shoes.

The stereotypes? Tiny tech experts who can navigate apps better than adults, watch YouTube at lightning speed, and somehow skip every ad in under half a second. Gen Alpha kids are also known for saying brutally honest things in public at the worst possible moments.

No one knows exactly what Gen Alpha will become, but one thing is certain: they’ll probably explain future technology to the rest of us someday.

THE FUNNY TRUTH ABOUT GENERATIONS

Every generation thinks the next one is strange, while secretly borrowing its trends anyway. Boomers joined Facebook late, millennials made nostalgia a lifestyle, Gen Z revived early-2000s fashion, and Gen Alpha may eventually convince us all to wear virtual reality goggles to grocery stores.

In the end, generations are less about strict labels and more about shared experiences. Still, the stereotypes are fun — especially when they’re just accurate enough to make everyone laugh.

Fur Babies or Fake Friends?

For the last six months, my dad has been grieving the loss of the family cat, Abner, who was especially partial to my dad to the extent that he would cry when my dad left the house even for a brief period of time. Abner had a unique, quirky personality that left an impression on anyone who interacted with him, and my dad was his favorite person.

After my dad worked hard to nurse Abner’s diabetes into remission with proper treatments and medication, a few other health complications were discovered, leading to his passing in December.

Being an introverted man who grew up attempting to avoid showing vulnerability, my dad has been stunned at just how strongly Abner’s death has affected him. In fact, most of us take the loss of our furry family members to heart and struggle to pick up the pieces easily in the aftermath of an animal’s passing. With the exception of serial killers, I believe it’s safe to assume that most people shudder at the sight of a suffering animal, but why is it that we have such a soft spot for various species?

Anthropomorphism is defined as the interpretation of nonhuman things or events in terms of human characteristics.

If you’re borderline insane like me, you may struggle to leave just one potato chip in the bag even if you’re full because you don’t want the chip to die alone in the garbage or feel left out. I often assume what my cat is thinking based on how I feel and believe that we have a much closer bond than what likely exists on her end beyond me feeding her daily. One of my college psychology professors, Dr. Hal Herzog, extensively researched human-animal relationships and sparked my interest in the topic after he wrote the book Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals discussing anthropomorphism at length.

As it turns out, not everyone is as prone to anthropomorphism as others. According to Psychology Today, research has discovered that the tendency to attribute human thoughts and behaviors to animals or inanimate objects may correlate more strongly with loneliness or higher levels of neuroticism (susceptibility to negative emotions like worry and overall emotional instability) than those exhibiting lower levels of neuroticism in their personalities. Ascribing human emotions to our pets may fulfill social needs, insinuating that pet ownership is largely more beneficial to us as humans than it may be to our indoor cats, who stare longingly out the window at birds flying by for hours on end. I know I can’t

be the only heartbroken soul who’s been guilty of impulsively adopting a cat in my early 20s to cope with a breakup (and it worked).

Ever wonder why you talk to your dog in a baby voice? Domesticated animals like cats and dogs exhibit infantile-like traits found in human infants, such as large eyes and perceived helplessness and dependency (as well as other adorable features) that most humans innately desire to protect on a primal level. It’s almost as if our pets are unknowingly exploiting parental instincts that some of us (including myself) aren’t even fully aware we possess. Much related to this, one of the aspects of grief that my dad is dealing with regarding Abner’s death is whether my dad made the right choice in taking him to the vet and deciding euthanasia was the “best” route when Abner’s rapid decline and suffering became too much for anyone, including Abner, to bear. Parents despise seeing their children suffer, and witnessing the suffering of those most vulnerable and feeling responsible for a child or pet’s livelihood can feel indistinguishable from one another.

While we may be wrongly ascribing human emotions and personalities to our animals, I believe that’s part of the magic in pet ownership. As someone who believes many animals were divinely inspired to provide companionship to humans, what fun is life without a little delusion? Even if no one can prove it, I know with every bone in my body that Abner loved my dad and lived a good life.

It’s the emotional labor no one sees.

So, if you’ve been “feeling off,” here’s your permission slip: You don’t need a perfectly packaged reason to feel the way you feel.

WHAT WE’D TELL EACH OTHER OVER COFFEE

If we were having one of those honest, no-filter conversations, here’s what I’d remind you of and what I hope you’d remind me of as my BFF. You’re allowed to rest before you completely burn out.

You don’t have to earn your rest by running yourself into the ground.

You’re allowed to say “no” without explaining yourself.

Not every invitation, request or obligation deserves a “yes.”

You’re allowed to not have it all figured out. Life isn’t a checklist, it’s a process and sometimes it is messy.

And, most importantly, you don’t have to carry everything by yourself.

SMALL WAYS TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD This isn’t about overhauling your life. It’s about small shifts, the kind that feel doable on a regular day.

My BFF and I were talking the other day, and she said that things were just feeling heavy and not quite right, but there really wasn’t a specific reason for being out of sync. You wake up tired after a good night’s sleep. Your patience runs thin over things that normally wouldn’t faze you.

The to-do list feels more intense than usual and even the small joys of life, like your morning coffee and hearing the birds sing, don’t quite land the way they used to. “Why do times like these happen in life with apparently no reason?” I am so glad you asked!

THE PRESSURE TO HOLD IT ALL TOGETHER

Somewhere along the way, we decided, as women, for the most part, that we were supposed to be everything to everyone…strong, dependable, organized, emotionally available, professionally driven and, somehow, still well rested and glowing.

We carry families, friends, careers, aging parents, growing children, relationships and expectations, and we do it quietly. From the outside, it looks like we have it all together.

Between us, holding it together can be exhausting.

And, the truth is, a lot of that “heaviness” comes from carrying things we were never meant to carry alone.

WHEN YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU NEED Sometimes the hardest part isn’t that things feel heavy; it’s that you can’t quite name why.

It’s not one big thing but a thousand small things. * The text you forgot to send. * The conversation you’re avoiding. * The appointment you need to make. * The constant mental tabs open in your brain.

Maybe you can let something go to the next day’s to-do list without guilt, ask for help even if it makes you feel uncomfortable or say “I am overwhelmed” out loud to someone you trust.

These aren’t dramatic changes, but they matter.

YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE FEELING THIS WAY

Here’s the part we don’t say enough; so many women are walking around feeling exactly like this.

Put together on the outside, but quietly overwhelmed on the inside.

If we talked about it more, we’d realize how much we’re all carrying, and how much we could ease the weight for each other.

So, consider this your reminder from your BFF: You’re doing better than you think.

You’re carrying a lot, and it makes sense that you feel it.

And, you don’t have to go it alone.
