The View From This Side JUNE 2018

To all the men who read Forsyth Woman (and we know you’re out there, even if you don’t admit it!), we wish you all a very special and happy Father’s Day! So now – other news to catch you up on! We were so thrilled to be a part of the Komen Race last month! It was bittersweet since it was the last Komen “Race for the Cure”– an event that has been 19 years strong in our community – but Komen has something new up their sleeves for 2019, and we can’t wait to see what’s next on the horizon!

June is a special month for me because I have so many special men in my life to honor. First – my husband, Tim. While we are now empty-nesters, Tim was an amazing father to our children and remains active and engaged in their lives. Our family is so blessed by him, and I’m grateful to share my children with him!

Next, my prayer is that my own father has a Father’s Day that is as special as he is. My dad has been my rock throughout my life, and not only is he my dad, he’s also been an instrumental factor in my business.

Chances are you or someone you love will face cancer in their lifetime. Cancer patients and their families need more than treatment, they need hope and community. Cancer Services is the Triad’s community of caring for people facing cancer and their families. With a mission of enhancing health, life and survivorship, the agency works closely with health teams at both Novant Health Derrick L. Davis Cancer Center and Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center to ensure the needs of those with any type of cancer are met.

ENHANCING HEALTH Cancer Services’ community outreach team works to decrease health disparities by providing life giving education on healthy living for cancer risk reduction.

Up to 40% of cancers could be avoided if Americans ate nutritious diets, were physically active on a daily basis and maintained a healthy weight. Our community outreach team provides cooking programs and active living classes for at-risk groups in our area.

ENHANCING SURVIVORSHIP

Cancer Services works to optimize health after a diagnosis of cancer. Living after such a diagnosis can be a challenge emotionally and physically. Our community of cancer survivors enjoy educational sessions that share the most up-to-date and evidence-based information on optimizing survivorship. Survivors participate in social support, nutrition programs and active living encouragement. We deliver these in person, and through our online survivorship website - cancerdietitian.com.

ENHANCING LIFE Cancer Services strives to improve the quality of life during cancer treatment by addressing urgent needs to access cancer care. Our Patient Advocate Team diligently works to find help to pay for life saving medication, offers an appearance boutique with wigs, hats and prostheses, and helps provide hospital equipment and other needed resources, all at no charge.

Each and every Cancer Services volunteer plays a key role in making our services possible.

EYE ALLERGIES

It is almost a no-win situation. During the cold months, allergies flare up due to changes in the way we live. We live in homes that are sealed to trap heat in the winter and cool conditioned air in the summer. We have wall-to-wall carpeting and throw rugs on our floors. This comfortable and energy-conscious approach creates an environment in which dust mites thrive. There is less fresh air from outside being exchanged with stale air indoors, which means that dust builds up inside. Carpeting may be comfortable to walk on, insulating, and attractive, but stuff that settles in it is fodder for dust mites, and their waste is highly allergenic.

Then add the warm weather and the allergens associated with grass, trees, pollen, etc., and this turns into millions of people suffering with congestion, runny nose, coughing, sneezing, headaches and difficulty breathing all year long. Individuals with allergies often suffer from eye allergies or allergic conjunctivitis resulting in red, watery, itchy and sometimes swollen eyes. Just as irritants cause an allergic response in your nasal and respiratory system, your eyes also react with an oversensitive immune response. Particularly seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) is common during the spring, summer and fall.

If your eyes itch, are red, tearing or burning, pay attention to what they may be telling you. You may have eye allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis, a condition that affects millions of Americans. It is a condition that can occur alone, but often accompanies nasal allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, sniffling and a stuffy nose. And, while most people treat nasal allergy symptoms, they often ignore their itchy, red, watery eyes.

Then comes the question, are allergies causing my itching, burning, tearing eyes? Or is dry eye syndrome an underlying component? Dry eye syndrome can be caused by many things, however, medications used to treat our runny nose and congestion can be the root cause of dry eye.

Antihistamines do a great job of drying out our body and relieving our body of nasal congestion and sinus headaches; however, it can also dry out our eye, causing a problem on top of a problem. One way to help negate this, is to use artificial tears. This can help provide some relief during the times of allergy seasons.

Another cause of allergic conjunctivitis is dry eye. If the eye is dry to begin with, it may be difficult for the eye to rinse itself of allergens that may settle into the eye, creating a cascade effect of tearing, itching, and burning. The use of artificial tears may help to relieve these symptoms.

If they do not, a further evaluation with a dry eye specialist may be needed. Summer Learning Academy: A Program of the YMCA of Northwest NC

Ward Elementary School, located at 3775 Fraternity Church Road, is joining seven other schools in Forsyth County who offer the Summer Learning Academy program. This program is designed to keep the participating students on track to maintain and/or improve their academic growth; the program closes the gap between the school years and sustains learning from one school year to the next. Students are selected by their school’s principal to participate in the program based on their academic needs.

“The program originally started in 2008 as Camp High Hopes,” Bonita shared. “In 2012 the name was changed to Summer Learning Academy. We started as a half-day program with 45-minute sessions covering math, reading, and enrichment activities; however, over time, we saw the need for full day classes. The Academy has adapted to the technological advances and needs of our students. The Summer Learning Academy involves the whole child environment with an emphasis on parental participation. Parents may work with Goodwill Industries’ job and career readiness programs, participate in ESL (English as a second language) programs, or receive guidance on ways to best interact with their children’s teachers.”

This is the first year that Ward Elementary School will participate and is a welcome boost for the Clemmons community at-large. Rosemary Suess, VP Operations / Executive Director, Jerry Long and Stokes Branch, YMCA of Northwest North Carolina shared, “Jerry Long Family YMCA is providing sponsorship via grant monies from the Wayne A. Shore Fund and Women Who Care, a community advised fund with Clemmons Community Foundation. We are excited to bring this tried and true program to Clemmons, giving our children an opportunity to claim a greater impact on their learning. We view this as an investment in our children, who are the future of our communities.”

Fifty children from first and second grades have already been selected to attend the Summer Learning Academy at Ward Elementary, which runs from June 25 through July 27, 2018. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm.

Roderick Howard, Executive Director of YMCA Child Care Services explained, “Each school participating in the Summer Learning Academy targets a different grade dynamic based on the academic need identified for that particular facility, selecting about 50 children to participate.

The teachers for the Academy are certified from that school and are also selected by the school’s principal based on their academic performance. The students receive breakfast and lunch provided by the school district, as well as a morning and afternoon snack. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC provides weekend meal packs to ensure children have food to eat over the weekend.

Bonita Patton Judge, Senior Program Director for YMCA Child Care Services, explains the scope of the Academy program. “The first half of the day, students focus on academics – literacy, science, technology, engineering, and math (i.e., STEM). The second half of the day, after lunch, students work on enrichment skills, arts, character, and leadership endeavors.”

5 Things to Do on Sunday for Your Most Productive Week

Have you ever heard that saying, “If you don’t run your day, your day will run you”? I have a feeling that whoever said this was talking about Sundays in particular. I don’t know what it is about Sundays, but they go by faster than any other day of the week it seems.

I’ve decided it’s because that is the day of the week that so many of us feel like we are chasing daylight, trying to fit as much as possible in before the week starts over again! Weekdays come with their own set of stressors and scheduling conflicts, and sometimes all blend together in a blur!

So, what if I told you that Sunday could be the answer you’ve been looking for? That with a little tweak to your mindset and a few simple steps, you could turn your Sunday into a launching pad for your most productive week ever!

CLEAN THE HOUSE

Now of course, this isn’t our favorite thing to do on the weekend, but, hear me out. Having a clean space is proven to help us relax, be less distracted and be more creative, and studies have even shown it helps us sleep better! Put a little chunk of time on Sunday towards picking up the house, emptying the trash and making sure the bathrooms are clean to help make your home a welcoming space with less distraction.

Let Sunday start you off with a clean space and you’ll be surprised how much less likely you are to let it get messy during the week.

MEAL PREP

How much nicer is your Monday morning going to be when you already have breakfast ready to grab and go? Preparing things like overnight oats or hardboiled eggs for breakfast can be a game changer when you’re running out the door. Taking time to review your schedule for the week and what meals you will and won’t be eating at home allows you to prepare ahead of time. Instead of running around at lunch time or coming home each evening to cook dinner, carving out time on Sunday to prep meals and snacks for the week can make things so much easier. It’s like getting time back in your pocket while helping you eat healthier with prepped meals already portioned out and fresh.

PACK YOUR GYM BAG

How many times have you said you’d head to the gym after work or attend that yoga class in the afternoon and something as small as not having time to pack your gym bag gets in the way? Taking as little as twenty-five minutes to pack your gym bag for the week on Sunday can encourage you to work out more and make it easier to avoid. Think about which activities you’ll be doing that week and pack the number of active wear outfits you’ll need. Be sure to also throw in things like headphones, hair tie, a water bottle, your fitness tracker and charger, etc.

PLAN YOUR OUTFITS

How much time is wasted each morning picking out what we’re going to wear before we head to work or take the kids to school? If you’re anything like me, it’s a lot of time! Sunday is the perfect time to check the weekly weather forecast and step into your closet to plan out your outfits for the week. Rather than washing several loads of laundry aimlessly, this helps you see what you’ll be needing and make sure you’re including these specific pieces. Have your weekly wardrobe hung up in your closet ready for the week ahead.

CREATE A SCHEDULE/TO-DO LIST

Even if you aren’t a type A personality necessarily, it doesn’t mean organization isn’t for you! Get prepared on Sunday by looking at all of your and your family’s appointments and plans for the week ahead. Of course we can’t schedule every little detail, but the events of the week you know ahead of time are great to get down in your calendar or planner. Creating your to-do list at the same time helps you not only stay organized and more likely to accomplish these things, but allows you to envision your week and its needs.

Stories of Self-Discovery

“Be You: Stories of Self-Discovery” is a new monthly column in Forsyth Woman. Writer Tracy Harris’ vision for the column is to tell stories that are motivational lessons for women. She is a vocal proponent who believes women can achieve anything, no matter their situations. Harris is an only child from Mississippi and has recently relocated to the Triad from Maryland. She is a mother of four and soon Harris will be getting remarried, and will gain two more children. Currently, she is the Catering Manager for Plain and Fancy Caterers in High Point. She has earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations, holds an MBA, has hosted her own radio morning show in Baltimore, and participated in the Air Force Auxiliary. In addition, Harris has served as a Captain and a Co-Pilot in the Air Force Auxiliary, and has flown airplanes, as well as helicopters.

There comes a pivotal time in a person’s life when they reach a crossroad. That time came for me a couple of years ago in an unlikely source, Hurricane Irene.

I was a single mother of four kids barely making ends meet, constantly stressed and worried. Then Hurricane Irene hit the eastern seaboard. At that time I was working a sales job and was a co-pilot with the Air Force Auxiliary (Civil Air Patrol). I was fortunate enough to have flown in a mission right after the storm that received a Presidential Award. A few weeks later, I received a call from a local radio station asking if someone from our squadron would come in and be interviewed on the air.

Now I was the only female in an all male squadron, and when word got out that they needed someone from our mission to talk on the air, all the men ended up with laryngitis on the same day (so they said). Needless to say, I was the one to do the interview. That interview started me down the path of learning about not only myself, but also some important life lessons.

Shortly after that interview aired, I was approached about becoming an on-air talent for that station. I had no radio background nor had I ever considered it as a career. Quite frankly, I didn’t think I had the confidence or thick enough skin to be a public persona and all it could entail, but it did pique my interest.

So I talked to my friends and family about making this rather large decision and was given every reason why I was foolish for considering it. Even the thought of considering it made me feel guilty, as I had four lives that depended on me. Self-doubt began to appear, along with the disappointment that comes from giving up on something you really want.

However, before I made the final decision, I sat my children down (ages 15, 14, 10 and 7 at the time), as I do with most

important decisions, and asked them their opinion. Children have the privilege of not having preconceived notions as to who we should be. They only see what we can be. With four pairs of loving eyes staring at me, and with the enthusiasm that only children can exude, they gave me every reason why I should take the opportunity. “Go for it, Mom!” In that moment, I realized something really important.

Everyone comes to the table with their own negativity or their own thoughts on the way things should be. However, if we are to be true to ourselves, we need to realize that no one can tell us who we are meant to be but ourselves. No one! With this new found knowledge and a whole lot of hyperventilating, I began my radio career. I eventually became the host of my own morning show in Baltimore where I had the honor of talking to so many inspiring women about their struggles and how they overcame them.

As my show evolved, there was a common thread that I began to see. That thread was that, as women, we tend to let those around us dampen our dreams or convince us that our current circumstances prevent us from reaching for what we want, or from being whom we are meant to be. I am not ok with that.

So if my experience has any lesson, it would be to follow your heart and ambitions, realizing that YOU are the only one who can make your dreams come true. With this in mind, my goal with “Be You” is that by sharing some of my stories and insight, they will resonate with you and hopefully help you tap into your inner strength. If I am able to make a difference in one woman’s life, then my efforts will be worthwhile.

How to Improve Your Man’s Style

Bless their hearts…wearing sandals with socks or rocking gym shorts with a polo are just a couple examples of fashion misses I see men exhibiting.

Sometimes our men need help with their fashion sense and that’s part of our job! And guess what? You can make your man’s clothes look better without hurting their feelings. That’s the key! As women, we don’t want to hurt their feelings, we just want to help them feel confident in more fashionable clothes!

SHOWCASE HIS PERSONALITY.

Just because you think something looks good on the cover model of GQ magazine does not mean it will look good on your boyfriend, husband or significant other. Help him become the best version of himself instead of what you think looks good. It’s about him feeling and looking great, not about you. If he’s an outdoorsy guy, pair his Teva sandals with more fitted jeans and a crisp button-down. If your man is a former athlete and only wants to wear tennis shoes, start shopping for sneakers that are both stylish and functional. If he loves to wear t-shirts because he feels most comfortable in them, go shopping for a more fitted, graphic t-shirt that showcases his personality.

FIT IS IMPORTANT. Nothing ruins an outfit more than an illfitting garment. I’ve found that men buy their size sometimes without trying it on and are stuck with a pair of shorts that’s too tight or entirely too big. Encourage your guy to try on always! Go shopping with him and have him do a mini-fashion show in the dressing rooms. Help him realize what a good fit entails, and this could even involve talking to a sales associate at the retailer where you are shopping. An outfit can be completely transformed if it fits the correct way.

Too much fabric is never a good thing.

It either makes him look too skinny or too large. You also want to make sure clothes are not too tight either. Fabric should closely drape a person without pulling in an unflattering way.

GROOMING IS GREAT. My hubby was blessed with a lot of hair. He can grow a beard like nobody’s business! It’s a great thing, but his facial hair can get out of “bounds” very easily

if he does not maintain it. I noticed that once he started growing his beard, it was getting a little too rugged and did not look maintained. The truth is, he just needed to go to a barber who knows what he’s doing to help shape his beard, offer him tips and tricks on how to maintain it, and buy products that keep it looking nice. I made the appointment for him and he loved how much he learned and how he looked afterwards!

KEEP IT CLASSIC BY AVOIDING THE TRENDS. This tip works for both men and women: when in doubt, keep it classy. Just as Ron Burgundy said, “Keep it classy, San Diego.”

There are tons of trends out there that your man may be intrigued by, but your role is to encourage him to stick with the classics. Too often I’ve seen guys try to rock man-capris or the bowler hat and end up looking like they’re playing dress up for Halloween. I like to encourage my hubby to play with color instead of getting too crazy with the trends.

WOOL SCULPTOR & FIBER ARTIST

Fiber artist Laura Frazier uses wool to create amazingly detailed animal sculptures. You may have seen her hard at work on a muscular wool horse or dog at her tent at Cobblestone Farmers Market at Old Salem. Laura originally began sculpting animals with clay years ago, learning from different teachers. “I made sculptural vessels using my new skills and techniques,” she said. “But I still longed to make figurative sculptures of animals that would express my experience of intimacy with them.”

Clay was her primary medium of artistic expression until she found herself with many pounds of wool from her father-inlaw’s sheep. In an effort to make use of the wool that came in year after year, she discovered needle felting, a technique in which the wool is shaped by thousands of insertions, by hand, with a special needle. The wool begins to matt together in a shape and form that can be controlled.

This was the type of sculpting of animals Laura had been craving in her art. “This medium and technique afforded me the kind of control I’d longed for when sculpting,” she commented.

THE PROCESS

Laura begins each piece by sculpting a thin wire armature around which she wraps her wool roving. Next, a shape unique to the specific species or breed is sculpted by adding the wool bit by bit and felting it down. Lastly, the color and textural coat treatments that represent the distinctive characteristics of the subject’s form and disposition are applied.

Using photographs as a guide, her miniature creations are quite lifelike. She receives many commissions for pet portraits. “I love hearing stories about love and loss from pet owners near and far,” noted Laura. “Working with them over the time it takes to create a pet sculpture can be very intimate.” Laura tries to capture not only the physical likeness but also something of the pet’s personality and character.

Most are miniatures that range in size from 3.5” tall to 5” tall and take upwards of 40 hours to complete. Larger pieces have taken 80 to 150+ hours. She has moved on to create more advanced and larger animals, such as elephants and horses.

THE LOCAL ART COMMUNITY

“I feel supported by the art community and individual artists and collectors here in Winston-Salem,” said Laura.

“The Sawtooth School nourished my clay inquiries. Urban Artware and the SEED Gallery both propelled my work forward. Kim Varnadoe at Salem College helped find opportunities to exhibit with local and national artists.

Piedmont Craftsman Inc. juried in my work and Krankies Craft Fair is such a hub of creativity and lovely artists.”

Laura is a juried member of The Piedmont Craftsmen Guild and a member of the Mountain Homespun Fiber Guild of NWNC and SWVA.

BEATING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL

There he goes again! He’s.

Driving. Me. Nuts.

Ah . . . you thought I was referring to my husband. Nope. It’s this crazy bird!

No lie. Some jacked up, on-a-mission red bird rams right into my morning, day after day after . . . well, you get the point. As I sit at my computer, Crash. Bang. Boom. I race to investigate the ruckus.

Yep, it’s him. In rapid succession, this crazy bird flies smack dab into my glass door.

Nothing deters him. This repeated act of futility doesn’t remotely weaken his resolve. It won’t phase his pace. Just when you think this fella can’t endure one more slam of blunt-force trauma, he smashes in fiercer than ever.

You would think after hours of wasted work and squandered sweat, this irrational bird would get the message. He’s not breaking past this barrier.

But nope! Without the slightest apprehension, he’s right back at it when the sun rises.

The whole ordeal leaves me wondering, “Where. Is. His. Mama?” Surely she would intervene, advising against such meaningless measures. After all, that’s what moms do, right?

As I ponder a little deeper and muse a little longer, I realize that perhaps this bird isn’t so uncommon after all. Irrational? Yes. Rare? Not so much.

It’s ironic, isn’t it, this tendency many of us share. We exert enormous energy toward meaningless endeavors that perpetually trigger pain and disappointment. Hold that thought.

Have you ever suffered betrayal by someone you trusted deeply? Maybe you’ve agonized emotionally at the hands of another. Have you endured physical brutality that left every part of you paralyzed with fear? Perhaps some sick soul ravaged the innocence of a defenseless girl’s sexuality, leaving you to pick up the pieces alone.

The wound cut deeply, metastasizing like a cancer to every part of who you are. Regardless, you determined to move forward, leaving yesterday’s anguish in the rearview mirror.

Just when you’re sure it’s buried, just when it’s finally licked, the unexpected erupts in your story. The situation pushes you right back into those familiar reactions that pain birthed.

From that place, we create haunting habits. They tend to grip tight, refusing to let go.

The significant relationships of our lives see the destructive patterns that we so easily justify. Nevertheless, we roll out of bed in survival mode each new day, ramming into the same brick walls of life. It’s what we know.

Hear me. It’s time to stop beating your head against the wall.

What if we let go of the stronghold that’s been holding us captive far too long? What if we began holding strongly to the only One who can completely heal the hole housed in our hearts?

The reality is that we can’t fix ourselves. If we could, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation, would we? A wound so much bigger than us takes a God so much greater than us. My whole life attests to this Truth. “God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He cures our pains and our sorrows” (Psalm 147:3).

Notice that this Healer won’t merely offer a patch. He doesn’t simply soothe the pain. It’s in the Father’s very DNA to stay the course with the brokenhearted, completely mending and restoring the shattered pieces. This Healer sticks it out with those who feel left out. He bends down to those who feel let down. You’ll never have all the answers but you can rest your life in the One who IS the Answer.

It’s time. The wall isn’t budging. Besides, you weren’t made for pain. You were created for purpose. Stop slamming into the same hard places. Spread your wings. Fly in a new direction that makes you better, not bitter.

Beautiful Ideas Market is always a whirlwind, and I like to bring back my interpretation to my readers and clients. This year’s designs, from every showroom, were geared toward bright colors, mixed metals, gilded golds, performance fabrics, and soft elegance. The High Point Market is all about what we might see in a year or two, but for us, it is refreshing. Honestly, market is the inspiration for our thoughts and conceptualization of new projects.

Inspiration and innovation are the keys to every designer’s creation.

We research everything to obtain several options when putting rooms together for clients.

The colors most noticed were teal / blue, from light to dark. Blue seems to hang around year after year. Styles ranged from modern farmhouse to cottage traditional. Modern has a twist to it this year from urban to mid-century.

Demi & Bruce or The War of the Roses

How Do You and Your Ex Get Along?

Depending on the statistics you read, somewhere between 40-50% of marriages end in divorce. Is it possible to go through a divorce and not secretly wish for a bus to hit your ex? Emotions run high and there is trauma and heartache for all concerned, but it doesn’t have to be a miserable situation. Unless there is emotional or physical abuse involved, you can work, slowly, toward a friendship, or at least a peaceful co-existence.

If you were around in the 1980s, you probably remember the romance and marriage of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. Two of the biggest Hollywood actors at the time seemed to have the perfect union. Fast forward 11 years and three daughters later, and the couple were in divorce court. Around the same time, a movie was released called ‘The War of the Roses,’ a dark comedy about the ‘perfect marriage’ and how, when things take a very bad turn, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle. Let’s say, the Moore-Willis situation worked out much better than the Roses’ did. But what can you do to make sure you and your ex are more like Demi and Bruce?

Just like it takes two people to make a marriage, it takes two to tear one apart. Unless either spouse is abusing the other. Never ever tolerate your partner raising their hand to you or verbally belittling you. I have read that ‘marriage is a circular system in which two parts make up a whole.’

Admitting to your ex that you made mistakes that you regret can go a long way toward building and mending wounds. It’s nice if they do the same, but take the high road and recognize your part whether they do or not.

Unlike the Roses in the movie, have a clean legal battle; many times partners are unbelievably vindictive and

look at the division of assets as a competition. No one wins in this situation. Remember, how important is that dining room table in the scheme of life? Not really when it comes to your peace of mind. Don’t focus on getting even by taking his baseball collection to get some satisfaction. Be an adult, not a child in your litigation.

Nothing good comes from badmouthing your ex to family and friends. Think back on when you made the decision to walk down the aisle with this person. There had to be something there, a redeeming quality to this person…you can’t claim complete insanity during the union. Being slandered can just add misery to the situation. Even if your ex doesn’t hold to this idea, make sure you do. Karma is, as they say, well… not a nice lady.

Going along with the idea of not talking badly about your ex to your acquaintances, definitely don’t degrade your ex in front of your children, if you have them. Putting down your ex only puts your children in a loyalty bind and breeds further animosity with your ex. Keep your kids out of the middle. They don’t deserve it.

And in the event that, after a time, you meet someone, look at that person with new eyes. Don’t think ‘all men are alike,’ or ‘all women are the same.’ They aren’t, so don’t lump an entire sex into one pool of adjectives like ‘cheaters,’ ‘losers,’ ‘gold diggers,’ etc. You get the picture. And by all means, do not get involved with any of your ex’s friends or neighbors. There are enough people on earth for you to date, so cast your net wider than your immediate pond.

At the end of the day, keep in mind that we are all the sum of our experiences and relationships. Like I said, unless some form of abuse is involved, you likely had both good and bad in your marriage so take away the good and set the bad aside. Nothing good comes from harboring ill feelings. This perspective centers on the fact that relationships are one of life’s greatest classrooms.

Forging a friendship or even a co-existence with your ex after divorce can be a healing experience and allows for an integration of your past, present and future.

One of my favorite things about living in Winston-Salem is the local food! It seems there is never a shortage of restaurants to try and dishes to fall in love with.

This month’s review was something truly special. I was invited to taste the new summer menu at Providence Restaurant & Catering. Located inside the DoubleTree

by Hilton on University Parkway, Providence Restaurant & Catering not only serves up an incredible menu every day, but also it is on an incredible mission that changes lives. All of the profits from Providence go to support the Second Harvest Food Bank’s Providence Culinary Training (formerly TCK). In fact, most of the restaurant’s employees are apprenticed from the program.

With a mission like that, it’s no surprise that the staff at Providence sets the bar high before you even place your order. Everyone is so welcoming, and even on a day as challenging as preparing entirely new dishes for the first time, they make you feel like family. Plus, Chef Jeff Bacon was happy to share details about where he gets his local ingredients. I loved our shared passion for supporting local and small businesses!

We started out with two wonderfully dressed summer salads, both ripe with fresh produce from local farmers.

First, the SUMMER BEET CARPACCIO comprised of Harmony Ridge beets, Goat Lady Dairy chevre, toasted pecans and a sweet and tangy honey-balsamic vinaigrette. Such a flavorful salad! Next, I tried the STRAWBERRY AND SPINACH SALAD. Strawberries are my favorite fruit, so this was a winner in my book!

Local spinach, strawberry feta cheese, shaved red onion and an unexpected crunch of candied bacon! As appetizers began to arrive, I quickly realized I needed to take smaller bites to leave room to try all of these amazing meals. For example, NOT YOUR AVERAGE AVOCADO TOAST is aptly named! Delicate local greens, heirloom tomatoes, toasted pepitas with creamy mashed avocado tops a hearty slice of toast. It made for a deliciously light and photo-worthy meal. The OYSTER PO BOY served up the perfect amount of crunch with really well breaded flash fried oysters paired with crisp French fries. And, how could I ever forget THE RACHEL? This mammoth of a sandwich was stacked to perfection with layers of house-made pastrami, smoked turkey, creamy slaw on rye with Providence’s special sauce. I haven’t stopped dreaming of this sandwich!

The LOBSTER FRITTERS and I were destined to meet.

I’m not exaggerating here—my life is better after trying it. These are everything you want a fritter to be. Crisp, savory and not too heavy. They were complemented with a poblano pepper jelly that really ups the flavor profile of the dish.

The appetizers cover everything from NC SORGHUM WINGS seasoned with CHA! by Texas Pete to the GRILLED SPANISH OCTOPUS with heirloom fried potato, chorizo, saffron aioli and black olive caviar for the more adventurous.

Next came the dinner entrées. We started with the DARCY FARMS PORK CHOP, a thick cut chop paired with corn puree, succotash, crispy shallots and a sweet and sour demi glaze. This is a beautifully seared pork chop with tons of flavor and a colorful plate that was perfectly seasoned. The sweet and spicy CHIPOTLE-PEACH BBQ RIBS had real St. Louis spare rib flavor and were paired with a fennel slaw and a heaping portion of shoestring fries.

Of course, you can’t do summer supper right without a delicious steak in the mix and the JOYCE FARMS HERITAGE ABERDEEN ANGUS NY STRIP did not disappoint! I am a steak girl all the way, and this tender entrée melts in your mouth. It is paired with a hearty stack of spring vegetables and heirloom potatoes.

Some people say they have a sweet tooth. I have a sweet everything, and the dessert menu did not disappoint! Be sure to leave some room at the end of your meal because you will not want to miss out on these incredible desserts!

YOU’RE KILLING ME SMORES is made with chocolate ganache, DoubleTree signature chocolate chip cookie, graham cracker crust, toasted marshmallow semifreddo and marshmallow drops.

One bite and I was instantly reminded of roasting marshmallows around a bonfire as a child. Did I mention the two fire roasted marshmallow skewers placed on top? There was true campfire crackle in every bite!

Next came DJ’S PEACH CHEESECAKE. DJ is a recent graduate from Providence Culinary Training who started his own cheesecake company. This selection may sound like a familiar dessert, but never has a cheesecake been so refreshing and smooth. The fresh peach flavor gave it a summer twist but balanced well with the Chantilly cream and cheese. On that same note of refreshing flavor, the CREPES CREME “FRAICHE” consisted of local berry compote, lemon curd, fluffy mascarpone and honey-thyme syrup. It was light, luscious and (like all of these amazing desserts) it’s perfect for sharing.

For me, few things are more difficult than choosing a favorite dessert, but after trying these summertime sweets at Providence, it’s downright impossible. Honestly, each one was better than the next!

I’m already thinking about what to order on my next visit to Providence. I have a feeling it won’t be easy to decide. In the current market, we have all been feeling the angst and remember well what volatility feels like. Fears of tariffs and trade wars, and real wars with guns and missiles, all seem to be looming in the not too distant future. Many people we talk to feel like they are getting mixed signals. The news and the media continue to focus on the negatives; they have to, it sells better than good news. While we cannot be certain what the future holds, let us take a minute to focus on some positives that may not be in the headlines as much.

Real business investment as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) continues to rise, as does productivity in the agriculture sector, and unemployment is at record lows. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), while lower than its peak of 26,616.71, is still well above 19,887, which was the last day of the previous administration.

We are not here to debate which administration is good or bad, but rather to put things in perspective.

We are seeing larger daily swings in the market, but we also have a much bigger market. A 500-point swing in the DJIA at the bottom in 2008 would have meant a 7.58% change. The end of 2012, 3.82% and as of 4/6/2018, 2.09%. Remember also that the DJIA reflects the performance of only 30 stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange. The S&P 500 might be a better index to follow since it is comprised of 505 stocks issued by 500 large-cap companies and covers about 80% of the equity market by capitalization. Most portfolios also contain mid-cap, small-cap, international and bond positions giving you diversification in different sectors.

Diversification is designed to help reduce volatility over time. This simply means you may have some assets that are down while others are up. However, it is important to note that there is no guarantee that a diversified portfolio will enhance overall returns or outperform a non-diversified portfolio. Diversification does not protect against a market risk.

We are living in a time of an avalanche of both data and pessimism, but actually are achieving great things. Our share of the world’s GDP is almost 25%, employment rates are rising for all education levels, oil production in our country is at an all-time high, as are our exports of crude oil, and electricity generation is near an all-time high while CO2 emissions keep declining.

I present these facts because we often get caught up in the negatives we hear and that affects our investment decisions, particularly during periods of perceived high volatility. Volatility has been measured. In fact, a study was done by Kenneth Washer, Randy Jorgensen and Robert Johnson entitled “The Increasing Volatility of the Stock Market.” It examined the period between 1926 through 2014 and came to the conclusions that investors should focus on their longterm investment objectives and simply ignore the daily noise of the market. If you are worried, however, I would suggest sitting down with your financial advisor and discussing your concerns and portfolio allocations. Measure your level of potential risk with such tools as “Riskalyze,” which we use daily. Remember also, as I stated in a previous article, that focusing on your goals also puts things in perspective. Let’s clear away the clouds of despair and doubt and focus on the positives in the economy. I’m not saying things are perfect, but there are a lot of positive movements, and the American economy is one of the most resilient in the world. Perhaps a buying opportunity is in store.

The Myth of the Healthy Tan

A hundred years ago, Caucasian women were vigilant about shielding their skin from the sun. In the early 1900s, no self-respecting woman would have ventured outdoors (and certainly not to the beach) without the cover of long sleeves, a parasol, and maybe a sun bonnet or a wide-brimmed hat as well.

This obsession with fair skin had absolutely nothing to do with health. Pale skin was “in.” More than that, a lily-white complexion was a status symbol.

Ladies of wealth and luxury were identifiable by their fair skin. Socially, the paler one’s complexion, the better.

When I first learned about this I couldn’t help but wonder, “How in the world did this turn-of-the century passion for pale skin evolve into our present obsession with tanning beds and self-tanning products?” To find out, I embarked on a fact-finding mission.

I learned that the predilection for pale skin began to wane in the 1920s.

A new fascination with looking bronzed was apparently set in motion when trend-setter Coco Channel, vacationing in the French Riviera, got an accidental sunburn that turned into a tan. This “set off an international frenzy,” according to a townandcountry.com article titled “A Brief History of the Tan.”1 By the 1940s the desire for pale skin was finally eclipsed by the fashion-forward inventions of the bikini and the T-shirt.

People began spending more leisure time traveling to beaches and socializing at the pool. Throughout the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, the desire for the sun-kissed look of bronzed skin was further popularized by the California surfing culture, the debut of Malibu Barbie, and the iconic Coppertone ad campaign.

As a result, a “healthy tan” became widely regarded as hip, chic, and cool, and has remained en vogue right up to the present moment.

There is just one problem with this, and it’s a big one. There is no such thing as a “healthy” tan.

By way of explanation, let’s start with the bottom line: when skin turns tan, it is not a sign of health – it’s a sign of damage. The culprit is ultraviolet radiation, which damages the DNA in the cells of the skin.

When your body senses danger from ultraviolet radiation, it attempts to

protect you by making more pigment to darken your skin. Skin makes this defensive move on your behalf whether the ultraviolet rays are coming from the sun or from a tanning bed.

Skin darkens itself in response to both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Overexposure to either type increases the chances for skin cancer. In addition, UVA rays cause sunburn; UVB rays prematurely age the skin, creating age spots and wrinkles.

Even if your skin tone is naturally dark, which does provide extra protection, too much exposure to UVA and UVB radiation can still put you at risk for skin cancer.

According to skin health professionals, everyone, regardless of skin tone, should make liberal use of sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommendations are: • Use water-resistant sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and broad-spectrum protection. “Broad-spectrum” means that the product provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

• Reapply sunscreen to all exposed skin at least every two hours.

Reapplication is needed even on cloudy days, and especially after swimming or doing anything that causes sweating.

• Keep in mind that sunscreen loses its potency over time. Before using sunscreen that is left over from previous years, check the bottle for the expiration date.

A final, parting thought.

When it comes to sun safety, we can take a lesson from what the world learned the hard way about smoking: it’s not smart to allow advertisers and popular culture to convince us that being trendy is more important than our health. Let’s be more skeptical of messages from those with a profit motive, and give at least equal weight to the wisdom of health experts such as the American Cancer Society and the American Dermatological Society.

Kayla’s future is looking bright. But it almost didn’t happen.

At Family Services, we are passionate about ensuring that every child and family in Forsyth County is safe, secure and able to reach his or her full potential — especially our youngest children and their parents who are stranded on the far side of opportunities that could help them escape the generational cycle of living in poverty.

Like Kayla, and her mom — a single parent who desperately wanted to earn her associate’s degree so that she could apply for a better job and provide a more stable environment for her young daughter.

Thankfully, because of our partnership with the Wake Forest Downtown Health Plaza, she heard about Family Services’ child development programs and services, and enrolled her daughter in Head Start.

With Kayla in a quality preschool, her mom could attend classes and keep her part-time job. She also benefitted from having a family advocate who shared valuable resources that helped her set goals and work hard toward self-sufficiency.

Kayla benefitted, too. She received early childhood developmental attention in the first five years of her life – that critical, once-only window of opportunity to build an unshakable foundation for cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral health that will last her lifetime.

Yet limited public funding is not meeting the needs of our most vulnerable local preschoolers. Too many local children are on waiting lists for our services.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Meaning TheThe Meaning Behind theBehind Motto the Motto At Forsyth Magazines, a motto that we have lived by for years is “work smarter, not harder.” Everyone has their own definition of this phrase, but it generally means using your thinking skills to minimize tasks and extra steps, so that you use your time wisely and more effectively to get things done quickly. For example, instead of putting something off that would take five minutes or less to complete, do it immediately and move on to the next task.

The main purpose behind the “work smarter, not harder” motto is that you, as the individual, are able to prioritize your own needs and build upon your strengths and weaknesses. You are able to visualize what you need to focus on, see if there is anything you can cut from your workload or lifestyle, ask for help if needed, and figure out how you work in the quickest and most effective manner possible. Everyone has their own answers and meaning to the motto. Now, the question is: how do you work smarter, not harder? Take a look below to see some of the tips on how you can put this motto to use in your life.

1. Move and work in blocks. Instead of working hour after hour, divide up your work into equal sections. For each section of your to-do list, change up your location for working, whether it is inside, outside, or at home. The most important thing is to not set exact time limits for when you’ll finish a certain section, but to move when you have a certain section finished. Be sure to take a quick break or a fast walk to refresh yourself after each task.

2. Check your email first thing. This is mainly where I get the bulk of my to-do list. See what items you need to prioritize and get those done first. Then, move on to the smaller tasks that will take less time to finish.

3. Communication is key. Collaboration and communication can either make or break a project. Communicating effectively with other team members will help eliminate any mistakes or misunderstandings, or having to rework parts of the project.

4. Don’t multitask. As much as we love to do so, multitasking can actually cause more trouble (and work) than needed. Stay focused on one task at a time and complete that task before moving on to the next.

5. Create a routine and stick with it. When it comes to your work, to be more effective and efficient, it is best to try and do most of it at the same time each day. According to research, when we establish routines, our brains become in the habit of completing the task over and over again. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to accomplish a task quickly with less preparation. Essentially, you do the job on autopilot.

6. Relieve stress. When you are stressed, it can be hard to achieve anything on your to-do list. Let’s refer back to tip #1. The breaks between the sections of time will help you ease your stress and stay calm while working. Also, having a clear mind allows you to think through your task and helps prevent mistakes and misunderstandings.

7. Use your “GPS.” In her book, It’s About Time! author Mitzi Weinman explains GPS as “goal, purpose, and scope.” According to Weinman, this system can be used to get the whole picture and how you need to accomplish it. For example, you can see a task completed and then envision the various steps needed to completing it. Also, “GPS” can help you set goals for each of those steps until it is done (goal). Always ask yourself “why” we are doing something and how it fits into the larger goal (purpose).

“Work smarter, not harder” is a motto everyone should try at least once in their lives. Give it a shot – you might happily discover you are able to get more done in a shorter amount of time.

Got Type O Blood?

Here’s Why You’re Special

In addition to antigens, there is one more factor that plays a role in blood type. It is a protein called the Rh factor. Rh can either be present or absent in blood. If it is present, you are “Rh positive (+).” If it is not present, you are “Rh negative (-).” The presence or absence of the A and B antigens and the Rh factor determine the 8 most common human blood types (A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-).

TYPE O IS SPECIAL

The most common blood type is type O. According to the American Red Cross, about 45% of Caucasians, 51% of African-Americans, and 57% of Hispanics are type O. Since O is the blood type most people have, type O donors are always needed, as their blood is most often required for transfusions. (In case you are wondering, AB is the least common blood type. Less than 10% of the population has type AB blood, which makes people with this rarer blood type very much needed as donors, too.)

Have you ever wondered what is meant by the term, “blood types”? Not all blood is the same, and understanding human blood types hinges on one key word: antigen. Antigens are markers on the surface of red blood cells. The antigens on your red blood cells determine what type of blood you have. The four main blood types are defined by the presence or absence of two antigens, known as A and B, on the surface of the red cells: • If you have type A blood, only the A antigen is present on your red blood cells.

• If you have type B, only the B antigen is present.

• If your blood type is AB, both the A and the B antigen are present.

• If your blood type is O, neither the A nor the B antigen is on the surface of your red cells.

No one should ever be given blood that contains antigens that differ from the ones on their own red cells. This is because the body’s immune system is always on the lookout for foreign antigens. If it finds them, it sends out antibodies to attack and destroy them.

This is the reason blood type matters when someone needs a transfusion. If they were to be given blood that contains foreign antigens, their immune system would attack them, with potentially disastrous results.

Antigens are not only present on red blood cells, but also on skin and hair cells, saliva, and semen. This is why ABO typing is often performed on the biospecimens found at crime scenes.

O-negative blood is extra-special because it is far less common than O-positive blood.

While about 1 in 3 people have O-positive blood, only about 6.6% of the U.S. population has O-negative blood. If you are one of these people, you are a “universal donor.” This means anyone with any blood type can be transfused with your O-negative blood. Ideally, of course, everyone should receive their own exact type of blood, but in an emergency, type O-negative can be given to anyone who needs blood. This is because O-negative blood has no A or B antigens or Rh protein on its cell surfaces, so there is nothing there that another person’s immune system can reject. Many trauma victims have survived only because there was O-negative blood on a medical

helicopter or in an ambulance. O-negative blood is also the safest blood for newborns that enter this world with under-developed immune systems. Interestingly, while anyone can receive blood from an O-negative donor, those who are O-negative can only receive O-negative blood, since it has no antigens.

WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT TYPE O

Clearly, people with O-negative blood have a special opportunity to save lives by donating “the gift of life”—their blood. But there is one more reason type O blood is special. If you are blessed with type O blood, what you may not know is that your blood benefits you in special ways, too. Having type O blood gives you at least five health advantages that those with other blood types don’t have: • You are less likely to have heart disease.

• Your chances for developing dementia are lower.

• Your risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), a blood clot that starts in a vein, is lower.

• You have greater protection against pancreatic cancer.

• You have more stomach acid than others, so you can digest proteins and fats easier than those with other blood types.

Seven Ways to Easily Elevate Your Cooking

When you think about making your meals taste better, or becoming a better cook, what comes to mind? Do you think of luxury ingredients like truffle-infused oil or an imported cheese?

Or do you wish you could spend a few weeks at a French culinary school learning from the best? Believe it or not, you do not have to be a culinary school graduate to be a great at-home cook, and while many of us claim not to have the most advanced abilities, there are many easy and small things you can do to get better, more professional results, every time.

ALWAYS START WITH THE BEST FRESH INGREDIENTS

In today’s world of oversized grocery stores that offer every ingredient under the sun, it can be easy to reach for ingredients simply based on convenience. Despite the ‘ease’ of using prepackaged ingredients, using fresh is always is best. Shopping at farmers markets are a great way to get the best flavors, but while that isn’t always possible, shredding your own cheese or using fresh herbs as opposed to dried can elevate your dishes each and every time.

DITCH THE TABLE SALT AND SWITCH TO KOSHER OR SEA SALT

Using kosher or sea salt as opposed to table salt can add a new depth of flavors to your dishes. Salting throughout your cooking experience seasons your food to elevate the layers of flavors in each meal. Using little or no salt in your cooking often results in food that is tasteless and flat. Keep in mind that a recipe’s ingredients, as well as your palate, may require some adjustments to what is written in a recipe.

HONE IN ON YOUR KNIFE SKILLS

Developing good knife skills can not only help you become more efficient, but can also help ensure that all of your ingredients cook at the same rate. Making chicken stew? Cut the chicken breast into precisely-sized pieces, as well as the roasted vegetables. Practicing precision and evenness more than speed or fancy cuts will get your further than being able to dice an onion in 30 seconds.

SAY NO TO BULK SIZED SPICES

Spices have their purpose - to make food taste better! Often, however, spices hit their expiration rates faster than we can use them. You will know this is occurring when colors begin to dull and flavors become flat. Whether it’s cinnamon, cloves, cumin or coriander, purchase spices as you need them, and in the smallest quantity available, unless you use them frequently, to ensure your dried spices are packing the most punch.

BE CAUTIOUS OF OVERCOOKING

Overcooked vegetables become mushy and flavorless, overcooked meat is tough and dry, overcooked grains are soggy and fall apart. In other words, overcooked food is food that you do not want to eat. Keep in mind that you can always cook food more but can never cook it less. Learn to take your food off of the heat just before it’s done. The remaining heat will finish the cooking process and give you foods that are perfectly cooked every time.

GO AGAINST THE RECIPE

From cookbooks to magazines, internet food sites and blogs there are so many sources of inspiration for your meal planning. It can be easy to fall into the trap of printing recipes, collecting cookbooks and the like, but no recipe is perfect for every person in every kitchen. So many factors can influence the outcome of a dish. For instance, what is the exact temperature for mediumhigh heat? What if the author’s stove runs hotter than yours? The easiest way to bridge the gap is to taste your food as you go using the recipe as a guide, not a rule. The only exception is when it comes to baking -- always be as precise as possible when baking!

DON’T CROWD THE PAN

Trying to sauté some vegetables or brown your favorite steak? Overcrowding your pan will often result in steaming your ingredients. The more items in your pan, the harder it is for your pan to stay at its true temperature.

Keep all ingredients in one breathable layer. Adjust your pan size accordingly or cook in batches to ensure everything cooks the way that it’s intended to.

Where to Begin?

Pillow accessory When starting a new decorating project for a client, I consult with them on how they use the room and what their expectations are for the update. I consider their existing furniture pieces and décor to see what pieces need to be replaced and what pieces can be used. Then I evaluate and measure walls to know what size pieces will be needed.

The next step is to choose a color palette for the new project. This is when I ask my client for an ‘inspiration piece’……this can be something they already have like a piece of art they love or, more times than not, it’s my job to search for an ‘inspiration piece.’

This means I shop for fabric, a rug or art that will be used in the space. Once I’ve found the ‘inspiration piece’ my client loves, I begin pulling the plan together.

Choosing a paint color for the walls is chosen last to complement the furnishing and fabrics to be used in the room. Accessories are added last to enhance the décor – like jewelry added to an outfit, accessories complete the space.

Healthier Dessert Ideas

I have a massive sweet tooth and feel like the world is ending if I don’t get a dessert at least once a day. This can be a problem for my waist line, but thankfully I’ve found a few desserts that don’t break the calorie bank! Check out some of my favorite healthier dessert options that will leave you satisfied but still feeling good.

DATES WITH PEANUT BUTTER AND CHOCOLATE

I love these as a snack in the middle of the day because the added protein from the peanut butter gives me lots of energy while satisfying my sweet tooth.

• 1 pitted Medjool date • 1 spoonful of peanut butter • 1 square dark chocolate • Sprinkle of sea salt 1. Cut the date in half. In each half, slather peanut butter and then place dark chocolate on top. Finish it off with a sprinkle of sea salt.

FROZEN CHOCOLATE BANANA POPS

These popsicles are refreshing and healthy on a hot summer day.

• 4 large bananas, ripe • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder • 3 tablespoons heavy cream • 3 tablespoons maple syrup • ½ cup salted peanuts, finely chopped • Ice-pop molds 1. Puree the bananas in a food processor until mixture is creamy and smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients, except for the peanuts.

Combine well.

2. Spoon into ice pop molds and freeze until ready, about 8 hours.

3. Spread peanuts on a plate and roll the pops in the peanuts.

SWEET POTATO BROWNIES

This recipe does have a good bit of sugar, but the fat is from nut butters instead of butter or vegetable oil. It’s a great alternative to your normal brownies!

• ¾ cup sweet potato • 1 cup peanut butter or almond butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons flour • ½ cup mini chocolate chips • 2/3 cup granulated sugar • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons cocoa powder • 1 ½ tsp baking soda • Pinch of salt 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease an 8 by 8 inch baking pan.

2. Heat your nut butter so it can be easily stirred. Combine that with the sweet potato and vanilla extract.

3. Combine all other ingredients in another bowl. Then combine nut butter/sweet potato mixture together.

4. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes.

BROILED PINEAPPLE SUNDAE

This dessert reminds me of pineapple upside down cake but without as many calories! Major bonus: it’s so easy and quick to put together.

• 12 slices pineapple • ½ cup brown sugar • 2 tablespoons melted butter • Pinch of salt • Low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt 1. Preheat broiler. Place pineapple slices onto bottom of baking pan. Sprinkle with brown sugar and melted butter. Add a pinch of salt to taste. Broil pineapples until brown sugar has melted and pineapples begin to brown slightly.

2. Spoon 3 pineapple slices into a bowl and top with a spoonful of low-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt.

MAKE YOUR OWN ALOE VERA GEL! INGREDIENTS: • Aloe vera leaves • Vitamin C (optional) • Vitamin E (optional)

Reasons Why

You Need an Aloe vera plants are part of the succulent family. They are easy to grow, even for those who tend to kill plants. While they don’t like cold temperatures, they grow well in pots and can happily live indoors during the winter. The gel that is found in the leaves of the aloe vera plant is full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. The aloe vera plant is often used topically for hair and skin, but can also be eaten.

Some of the benefits include: 1. Relief from sunburns. Everyone knows that aloe vera’s cooling properties are instrumental in fighting the effects of a sunburn.

Using aloe vera helps burns to heal more quickly.

2. Relief from insect bites. Aloe vera’s healing properties can help eliminate the pain and itchiness from some insect bites.

3. Improves dental health. A study showed that aloe vera juice was as effective as mouthwash for reducing dental plaque.

4. Relief from canker sores. Fresh aloe vera, when applied to mouth ulcers, not only reduced the pain, but also helped heal the sores more quickly.

5. Aloe vera is a moisturizer. Since the plant’s gel is largely water, it makes sense that the plant would be great for skin. While research has not definitively stated that aloe helps prevent wrinkles, skin treated with aloe vera does show improvement in elasticity.

6. It can help relieve dandruff.

Massaging aloe vera gel into the scalp has shown to reduce dandruff, and even helps with hair growth.

7. Improved digestion. Aloe vera juice can help reduce heartburn and improve protein absorption in the digestive tract. While the juice can be slightly bitter, it can be added to other juices, smoothies, or recipes so the benefits can still be enjoyed.

Aloe vera’s benefits continue to be studied, but the research continues to show how amazing this plant is. The benefits of aloe vera are substantial, making it a useful plant, as much as it is simply interesting to look at.

Cut the aloe vera leaves into manageable pieces.

Trim the serrated edges.

Carefully use a knife to remove the skin on one side of the leaf. Then, using a spoon, scrape the gel into a bowl. Put the gel in a blender (or use an emersion blender). The gel should become frothy, without any chunks.

You can stop right here, and the gel will last for about week in the refrigerator, or you can freeze in ice-cube trays to use as needed.

However, the addition of Vitamin C and Vitamin E will help improve the shelf-life of the aloe vera gel, and of course, give you the added benefits that come with vitamins C and E. 2000 mg of Vitamin C and one tablespoon of vitamin E for every cup of aloe vera gel are good additions. Mix with the blender and the gel should last up to six months in the refrigerator.

MAKE YOUR OWN HAND SANITIZER! INGREDIENTS: • ¼ cup of aloe vera gel • 1 tbsp of rubbing alcohol • Ten drops of cinnamon essential oil • Ten drops of tea tree essential oil • Distilled water Cut the aloe vera leaves into manageable pieces.

If you have those moments in the week where you find yourself feeling like you are in this crazy world of working toward your goals all by yourself, get out there and make some relationships! I see this happen all the time in the Facebook groups I’m a member of! Someone will mention they are looking to create a graphic t-shirt line for example. Within minutes you’ll see comments popping up recommending friends who screen print or work with a heat press. Instant collaborations are made! So many times, what we can create together surpasses what we can do by ourselves.

ENCOURAGEMENT

Let’s keep it real. The journey of being an entrepreneur isn’t glamorous and can be anything but easy. It’s literally running toward your goal at full force, passionate and determined, with what can feel like the entire world, at times, reminding you that there’s a chance of failure. So having people who genuinely know what those struggles are like can make it much less lonely.

Seeing other people’s successes can make you feel empowered and sometimes offer you the encouragement you need to try something new or push yourself in the direction you’ve been afraid to move in.

There is a special type of support when you create a community through connection. Your friends and family are amazing, but having a tribe of people who truly get it makes such a difference in running a business.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It’s who you know.” And while I’m the first to tell you that having success it’s much more than just that, let’s not be naive either. By getting yourself and what you do out there, you are putting your name in someone’s head when they have that wonderful opportunity for which you are the perfect fit.

On the flip side, by building community and being a part of different networks of people, you could meet the next person you need in your life for your business!

Time to Celebrate All Things Dairy!

Milk. Cheese. Yogurt. These are just a few of the delicious dairy staples that we all turn to when craving something rich and creamy. Lucky for dairy lovers, these yummy items also provide many benefits. For years, it has been well known that dairy products, such as milk, provide nutritional elements from which all can benefit. According to an article from Healthline.com, “The nutritional composition of milk alone is highly complex, and it contains almost every single nutrient that the human body needs.” Considering that this dairy product in particular contains so many vital nutrients—vitamins A and D—it is easy to see why so many foods include some form of milk product.

Especially since vitamins A and D are vital when it comes to having strong bones and a healthy body. From the elderly to toddlers, today the modern diet is filled with delicious dairy items sure to satisfy all cravings.

Senior citizens can reap countless benefits, including having a lower risk of developing osteoporosis. According to the article, “4 Reasons for the Elderly to Drink Milk,” one cup of nonfat milk has about 300 mg of calcium—that’s almost half the recommended daily intake for seniors. Dairy products can also be a good source of potassium for seniors, which can help lower blood pressure.

Children over the age of one year can also benefit from dairy products, specifically milk. Whole milk provides fat, which can give youth the energy they need to grow. Milk is also high in calcium, which is important for growing bones and teeth. Calcium is also easily absorbed into the body from milk, rather than from other vegetable foods.

Since dairy products are such crucial elements of the modern diet for so many reasons, this June join the Dairy Alliance’s month long celebration. Since 1939, “June Dairy Month” has encouraged families to make milk the beverage of choice. The celebration started out as a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer. The official honor was established in 1937 by grocer organizations sponsoring “National Milk Month.” By 1939, June became the official “dairy month.”

More than 75 years since the annual celebration began, June Dairy Month continues to recognize not just the dairy products, but also the farmers who produce them. TIP # 1: AVOID FATTY DAIRY PRODUCTS

Avoid drinking whole milk. Instead, try fat-free (skim) or low-fat (1%) milk. If you currently drink whole milk, you can try gradually switching to lower fat versions. This change cuts saturated fat and calories, but does not reduce calcium or other essential nutrients.

TIP #2: START YOUR DAY WITH A SMOOTHIE

One of the simplest recipes only requires milk and fruit. Mix 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh or frozen strawberries, peaches or banana chunks in a blender, with 1 cup (250 mL) milk, and 5 - 6 ice cubes. Blend for 20 seconds. Note: Omit the ice cubes if you are using frozen fruit.

TIP #3: SWAP OUT THE COFFEE FOR A LATTE

Swap your regular coffee for a café latté, since the hint of milk you might add to regular coffee is far from the recommended serving of 250 mL (1 cup). Most add just a splash of milk in their regular coffee, meanwhile a café latte (which literally translates to coffee milk) is made from 1/3 espresso, approximately 2/3 hot milk, and a layer of foamed milk.

TIP #4: ADD A SPRINKLE OF DAIRY

Try using fat-free or low-fat milk on cereal and oatmeal. Add zest to fruit salads and baked potatoes, with low-fat yogurt instead of higher fat toppings such as sour cream.

TIP #5: FINISH OFF WITH DAIRY

Finish your meals in style with a delicious piece of cheese served with fresh fruit (apple, pear, melon). Add elegance with a glass of wine.

LOSING SLEEP OVER ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Women can lose sleep over a wide variety of stress-inducing issues. We lose precious hours of sleep worrying about our love life, our children, our job, our aging parents, our bills, our weight, our long to-do list – you name it. What most women don’t know is that new research indicates that lack of sleep can contribute to increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists have previously reported links between sleep deprivation and fatigue, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. The link to Alzheimer’s disease has just recently been identified.

Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. It is estimated that more than 5 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s, and that this number will increase as our population ages.

Alzheimer’s disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, placing it with other common health conditions such as heart disease and cancer as a cause of death for older people.

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia among older adults. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning—thinking, remembering, and reasoning—and behavioral abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities.

Dementia ranges in severity from the mildest stage, when it is just beginning to affect a person’s memory and functioning, to the most severe stage, when the person must depend completely on others for basic activities of daily living.

Increasing age is the greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is not a part of normal

aging, but your risk increases greatly after you reach age 65. The rate of dementia doubles every decade after age 60. People with rare genetic changes linked to early-onset Alzheimer’s begin experiencing symptoms as early as their 30s. Genetics and family history also play a part in risk for Alzheimer’s, as does having Down’s syndrome, being female, and having mild cognitive impairment (which is minor cognitive decline that is worse than normal, but not significant enough to be called dementia).

So how does lack of sleep lead to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease? While there’s no lifestyle factor that’s been definitively shown to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, there are lifestyle choices that increase the risk, and sleep deprivation has just been added to that list.

Lifestyle habits that increase risk include: • Lack of exercise • Obesity • Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke • High blood pressure • High blood cholesterol • Poorly controlled type 2 diabetes • A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables Interestingly, lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, liver disease, and hypertension. It makes sense that the incidence of diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer’s disease are all on the rise.

Scientists are busy trying to identify the relationships between these chronic conditions, as 37% of Americans report sleeping less than 6 hours/night, and less than two-thirds of US adults sleep the seven to nine hours/night recommended for optimal physical and mental wellbeing. The numbers are huge!

Many sleep deprived adults may think that they can “catch up” on lost sleep on the weekend or “next week” or when life slows

down. This may or may not be true. The newest research on the link between sleep and Alzheimer’s-type dementia indicates an immediate increase in beta amyloid plaques in the brain (the protein that clogs brain function in Alzheimer’s) by as much as 43% after only one night of lost sleep. It is unclear if these proteins get cleared away over time or with increased sleep, thus continued research is needed. Until answers are found, why take the risk? Get some sleep!

What You Can Do to Improve Sleep: • Go to sleep and get up at the same time each day • Limit daytime naps • Exercise at regular times each day (and not right before bed) • Get some natural light every afternoon • Don’t drink caffeinated beverages late in the day • Don’t use cigarettes or alcohol as sleep aid • Use your bedroom only for sleeping or sex • Create a safe and comfortable place to sleep – dark, well ventilated, and as quiet as possible • Develop a bedtime routine • Give yourself 15-30 minutes to fall asleep • Try not to worry about your sleep • If you are so tired during the day that you can not function normally, and if it lasts for more than 2-3 weeks, see your health care provider or a sleep specialist Resources: DukeMedicine Newsletter, May 2018.

In a world of sharing digital photos, keeping up with old friends and meeting new folks, posting pivotal life events, and showing ourselves to the public, social media has vastly become a way of life over the past decade. We upload photos to filter out the undesirable in our lives and apply the “Valencia” shade to highlight our best moments. But do we filter out a bit too much about ourselves? Did social media make us prideful to the point where we only choose to show others the greatest version of ourselves? Why are some of us so afraid to be one hundred percent in who we are and what our lives are really like?

HOW SOCIAL MEDIA MADE US PRIDEFUL

Self-inflation is unhealthy and flaunting on social media feeds that self-inflation. Today, it appears Instagram and Facebook have become an oasis of presentation where people come to flaunt their accomplishments, material possessions, and personal appearance. We’ve become “illusionists” projecting the illusion of bliss, giving our followers the idea that our lives are nearly perfect. We choose to show people the highlight reels of our lives and leave out the unattractive. Do we fear judgment and criticism from others?

There is a craving to impress others in this digital world.

With infinite explorative Instagram hashtags, we have access to millions of users. Why do we feel this urge to impress others? Perhaps it’s the human desire to be liked, accepted, and admired; it makes us feel good. But what we are really showing others is a mere façade; we’re just vainly impressing them with nice things. Do they know the story behind why we have these nice things? In other words, it’s okay to share a little more than what is observable.

We hunger for “likes” and comments and it is likely that they feed our confidence.

Breaking a hundred likes on a selfie—especially for the first time—is a confidence booster!

Getting comments from various admirers under a celebratory “I graduated summa cum laude” post possibly assures us that we’re doing a great job in life. But do too many of us look to our internet “friends” for some sort of validation?

Social media has also become a tool for comparison. We may scroll through the wide ocean of filtered images and come across an aspirational post and think to ourselves, “Ugh, her life is more interesting than mine,” “she makes more money than I do,” she has more friends,” or “she’s younger than I am but accomplished more.” Rather than giving us a sense of pride, comparison hurts our pride. Either way, our pride is involved when it shouldn’t be. Comparison can leave a residue of inadequacy. The antidote: finding peace with your life and yourself.

#SOCIALMEDIATRANSPARENCYCHALLENGE

Knock out social media pride with a dose of transparency! You can start off small and graduate from there. Show your followers and “friends” that you are human.

Write a post about something you struggled with and overcame. This will give your followers hope with what they may be dealing with. Make a post about something you need to improve on. Be honest if you’re having a bad day. Post a makeup-free photo of yourself. What is a characteristic of yourself that you’re not proud of?

This can be a once-a-week challenge or a once-a-month challenge or even a daily challenge. However you tailor it, being truthful with yourself and others will shrink your social media pride.

We don’t need this pride. So many admirers are waiting to identify with you. Showing people who you really are will make them think more highly of you and help them heal from anything they are struggling with. In doing so, you will inspire them to be honest with themselves. So you can continue to post your highlights, but pepper them with your humanity.

The Art of Encouragement

Encouragement is something few people ask for, but everyone needs.

It fits various purposes and seasons in life, and there’s no specific size or form for it. We needed encouragement when the training wheels came off our first bicycle. We needed encouragement when we started a new school year. We need encouragement when we walk into a job interview. We need encouragement when we face monumental life changes - from wedding celebrations to surgery and illness to saying goodbye to a loved one. Sometimes encouragement comes in the form of a kind word and sometimes it takes the shape of tough love.

While encouragement comes in different shapes for different reasons, the art of encouragement comes naturally for some, while it’s a very learnable trait for others.

Encouragement starts with empathy. It’s a heightened sensitivity to what others are experiencing and the challenges they may face.

Encouragement is taking that awareness and backing it up with both words and action. Bonus? Giving encouragement rarely costs anything and is at the top of the list of priceless gifts you can give.

With all that said, some ideas for encouragement include: • Look for the unknown qualities. People rarely think twice about things they are naturally good at. Let them know you see and value what they do. For example, someone who is naturally kind and patient with small children may not think a thing in the world of it, but the encourager in their lives may point it out and say something like, “Children really love the way you talk to them; you’re very kind and make them feel heard and valued. That’s a special gift.”

• Do something nice for them. Busy mothers with young children often feel overwhelmed and underappreciated. Take a load off her one night by bringing over a casserole with a note that says, “You work so hard to care for your family; I wanted to do a little something to take care of you.”

• Step away from the keyboard and actually pick up the phone.

Our days of texting and emailing have created a chasm in actual conversation. Even if the person you’re calling doesn’t answer, leave a voicemail. Let them know you were thinking of them and just wanted to say hello.

• Piggybacking on that, send a card! Letter writing is quickly becoming a lost art, but you don’t have to be a prolific wordsmith to simply write, “I was thinking of you” on a card. Hallmark has a ton of options if you’re short on words.

• “I understand” goes a long way to encouraging someone who is going through a difficult time. It doesn’t work in every situation, but the simple act of being there and listening is, in itself, a wonderful form of encouragement, even if you can’t say, “I understand” from a voice of personal experience.

• Give them a shout out on social media. Tag them and let your friends (and theirs) know how much you appreciate them. Watch the snowball effect that happens when others follow your example. What a great team-approach to encouragement!

• Don’t say, “What can I do?” but instead, just do it. If someone is having a hard time, they won’t easily ask for help. Just do what you would want others to do for you in the same situation. The fact that you cared enough to just do it will speak volumes.

• Celebrate with genuine happiness when a friend has a special occasion. Encouragement doesn’t always accompany hard times. For those who are celebrating a big birthday, anniversary, or a new job – encourage them by acknowledging how far they’ve come and how well-deserved the occasion!

• Let others know you pray for them. We don’t tell each other often enough that we pray. When they’ve asked for prayers, let them know days and weeks later that you remember their request.

• Give them positive affirmations – tell them job well done; let them know their efforts are noticed. Those words of encouragement show a person they are valued and important.

• Ask about their past and show interest in their lives. The time spent learning about another person is a gift of encouragement for anyone!

When it comes to being an encourager, practice matters. Encourage often. Think of the people who have encouraged you and how it made you feel. Then go out in the world and give it back to others.

Morning or Evening People Which are You?

Are you someone who greets the morning with a smile and bounds out of bed excited to get the day started? Or do you fight with your alarm clock for just a few more minutes of shut-eye because you stayed up most of the night reading, working, or just could not fall asleep? It’s easy to make a distinction like this, right? How else can you determine whether you’re a morning or night person?

ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON, ALSO KNOWN AS A LARK? • Do you generally need only one alarm to wake up each day? It sits right next to your bed, rings, you just tap it and you’re on your feet. Or, do you actually wake up before your alarm goes off most days? The sun is up; so are you.

• Do you enjoy the early hours before everyone else is up? It’s your quiet space, it’s peaceful. If you’re out and about early, the streets are not congested, traffic is light, and you can actually hear sounds of nature.

• Do you enjoy early morning workouts?

They energize you and help you prepare for the rest of your day.

• Do you think that lounging in bed is a waste of time?

• Your best time of day is early; you get most of your work done while others are working on their third or fourth cup of coffee.

• You’re cheerful in the morning.

You don’t understand why everyone else is hovering around the coffee pot waiting for that first whiff and sip to start their days.

• Your job is to get the rest of your family up and ready to face the day.

• By early evening, you’re done and ready for bed. Staying up to watch a late movie or going out on the town? Pass on that – it’s bedtime for you.

ARE YOU AN EVENING PERSON, ALSO KNOWN AS A NIGHT OWL? • Is your alarm clock on the other side of the room, forcing you to get up to turn it off? Do you have more that one alarm set every day – at say, ten-minute increments? Your alarm is so loud it wakes the whole house, everyone except for you.

• Does the thought of an early morning meeting stress you out?

If you have to get up early, do you have trouble going to sleep?

• If you’re going on a trip the next day, do you get a good night’s sleep?

Probably not; you’re actually thinking about packing up and leaving for a night drive – you can sleep once you get to your destination.

• Is it a struggle to get to sleep almost every night? Your mind is busy planning things to do when the rest of the world is sleeping.

• You do your best work late in the day.

When the rest of the office is gearing down; you’re just getting started and hitting your stride. You’re a nighttime multi-tasker.

• Working out in the morning is not even a consideration. You have no energy for hitting the gym in the morning; but in the evening, that’s a different story.

• Your first priority in the morning is that cup of coffee to get your motor going. No one – friend, family, or foe – wants to face you until you’ve been appropriately caffeinated.

• Are you tired during the day? Does a quick power nap help you get through the day?

Is a weekend of sleeping late a perfect idea, a time to catch up on missed sleep during the week?

• Is your evening calendar full of things to do, places to go?

So, which one are you? A ray of morning sunshine or a late night powerhouse of energy? Whichever you are, be kind to the opposite spectrum.

Perhaps tone down the morning greeting until your work buddy has that first cup of coffee. Understand the grumpy, good morning is not personal – their internal clock is still getting started. For the night owl, tolerance for the cheerful morning person is a good thing. There is that middle ground where the field is level and we all work together. Good morning / good evening! Whatever time your day actually starts – have a great one!

Once-in-a-Life Time Trip to Cooperstown

Cooperstown, NY is where it all began…the mythical birthplace of baseball.

While the stories of who invented the sport vary depending on who you ask, the draw of Cooperstown, NY to baseball fans, young and old, make a trip there a must! The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum first opened its doors in 1939 and has welcomed millions over the years who celebrate our national pastime. Many wait a lifetime, having Cooperstown on their ‘bucket list’ to visit, but for one group of 12 year olds on the GRIT 12U (Game Ready Intense Training), a travel baseball team, their trip to Cooperstown will not only include a trip to the Hall of Fame and the regular site-seeing, but an opportunity to play in a tournament at the Cooperstown Dreams Park, and it just doesn’t get better than that!

As the team prepares, with practices and training, to play in Cooperstown Dreams Park, they are also fundraising, because the trip will cost around $1,100 per player, as well as per coach. Experiencing a week of baseball with your teammates and coaches is every ballplayer’s dream come true, even more so at 12 years old. The GRIT 12U team will be facing ninety-six teams from around the country and while it is a great honor, it comes with a hefty cost. “For all of our GRIT Teams, we hold tryouts in the offseason and players are selected after that process. Unlike other teams or organizations, GRIT are travel teams with players from Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Wilkesboro, Eden – all the way to Charlotte and Raleigh. The $1,100 per player and coach is just the cost to participate and doesn’t include travel expenses, so we are currently looking for donations to help offset the costs for the players. We are looking at a minimum of $15,000 for the team just to play,” said Jason Culler, Director of Player Development. To play in this tournament is very special honor and usually takes several years to be selected to participate due to the wait list, but the GRIT 12U team was chosen and have had only 6 months to raise their funds.

For the players, it’s not just about the tournament – it’s coming together in a place that, for baseball fans and players, is sacred. “Dreams Park has 22 fields where 104 teams play per week, along with bunks where they stay on the property. It truly is an experience the players, coaches and parents will never forget,” Jason commented.

In the 1989 movie, ‘Field of Dreams,’ one of the most remembered lines was ‘If you build it they will come.’ The same can be said about all that Cooperstown, NY has to offer, but most importantly all that the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament has to offer. Since it was built, they continue to come, to play and have an experience of a lifetime. Not many times come along in one’s life where you can live the dream and make memories to last a lifetime. For the GRIT 12U team, they have trained and honed their skills to participate in this tournament, but need financial contributions to help make this dream come true.

Barbecue

Some people like Eastern, while other people prefer Lexington. Wondering what I’m talking about?

North Carolina barbecue. This tasty food has had a longstanding history in the Tarheel State that dates back to colonial times.

According to historians, barbecue, in general, was first introduced in the Caribbean. During the 1500s, there would be island barbecues with meat, such as lizard and alligator. Shortly after, the Spanish brought hogs to the Caribbean and southeastern United States. This is when pork became the favorite meat for barbecue. As for North Carolina, influences came from the original settlers and African-Americans on plantations. Today, many people associate barbecue with their favorite style and you can’t have barbecue without a sauce.

MAIN TYPES OF BARBECUE

It is said that Eastern-style barbecue (vinegar-based) was the first style in the state. It wasn’t until Heinz created ketchup and introduced it to the public at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, that we began seeing a difference in barbecue styles. During World War I, Lexington-style barbecue was created in Lexington, North Carolina.

Eastern-style barbecue is a vinegar and pepper based style with no tomato. All parts of the hog are used. There is a common saying associated with this style, which is that “every part of the hog except the squeal is used.”

Originally, lemon juice was used in the base. However, since this juice was hard to find in many southern states when barbecue started gaining popularity, vinegar was substituted. Eastern-style barbecue has more of a spicytartness and focuses more on the actual meat than the sauce. As for Eastern-style slaw, it matches the tangy taste of the barbecue and includes vinegar. This style is mostly famous along the east coast of North Carolina.

Lexington-style barbecue (my favorite) is all about the tomato. This style is commonly referred to as Piedmont or Western style. It uses a red sauce, made up of ketchup, vinegar, and pepper and has a smokier taste compared to Eastern. The slaw mimics the tomato sauce, as well, and is called “red slaw” or “barbecue slaw.”

Lexington-style barbecue is more well-known in the Piedmont and western parts of the state.

OTHER STYLES

Most people are only familiar with North Carolina barbecue as being Eastern or Lexington. However, another, lesser known style involves pork ribs. The Baby Back Ribs, also called top loin ribs, are cut from the center section of the loin and are a favorite among many. Another type of pork ribs is spareribs. This style is a larger and longer rib and more flavorful than Baby Back Ribs. This style of barbecue can be found at many festivals and competitions throughout the year, including the Twin City RibFest.

Lastly, throughout North Carolina, pork meat isn’t the only type of barbecue a person can find. Chicken and beef are also favorites to serve up. In addition, there are influences from Texas, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Jamaica.

COOKING BARBECUE

The most traditional way to cook barbecue is pit style.

According to historians, this technique has been used for thousands of years. A pit barbecue is an enclosed, above-ground “pit” that cooks the meat slowly over different types of wood. Some popular varieties of wood are hickory, mesquite, and oak. The smells and smoke of the wood drift up into the meat and flavor it. Also, pit style is known for producing very tender meat. An example of pit style cooking is smoking barbecue or using a smoker. There are many various ways on how to use this style, as well as types of equipment needed. The most common types are cold smoking and hot smoking.

Cold smoking is used to flavor the meat and hot smoking can be defined as the meat’s cooking time.

BARBECUING VERSUS GRILLING

Yes, there is a different between barbecuing and grilling.

Crystal Cleaner in Clemmons

“Exercise? Oh, I just don’t have time...”

“I JUST DON’T HAVE TIME “

Anyone who has seen me for a preventive health visit (“physical”) or really almost any other visit may find much of this familiar. I often listen to frustrations about gaining weight, difficulty losing weight, sleep trouble, or the perennial favorite: “I just don’t have any energy.”

More recently, these complaints are followed by “something must be wrong with my thyroid” as somehow the human thyroid gland has ceased to be able to function correctly, all of a sudden.

(Yes, true thyroid disease does happen but most of the time your thyroid is NOT the problem).

Also, how can we expect our bodies to work well when we don’t move, but eat like we do, sleep poorly, and otherwise mistreat them.

Attempting to micromanage thyroid function is not going fix those problems.

During the conversation that follows these complaints, I will ask about other symptoms, diet, sleep, etc., and... (cue the music from “Jaws”) then ask the questions about exercise.

Simple things, such as: “What sort of exercise are you doing now? How much?” And “How often?”

After I ask these questions, I probably involuntarily hold my breath a second, since I know it’s coming: “Well…I just don’t have time.”

(Which is probably greeted with this expression):

No, I am not a heartless ogre, contrary to popular opinion. I completely understand where that excuse -yes, excuse- comes from. People have the idea that “exercise” has to mean doing something really unpleasant at a gym for at least an hour, plus traveling to and from this torture chamber. I will agree that a lot of people with normal lives (jobs, kids, family duty, pets...you know: a “life”) really DON’T have that kind of time. But you do have some time.

HOW? WHERE? WHAT?

Many folks think they have to join a gym and suffer in public in some formal class or extreme program with lots of yelling and sweating and pain. No pain, no gain, right? Wrong. If you can walk, then walk. Outside is preferred (use a hat/ sunscreen/parasol/whatever, if you will be out long) and there are too many parks to be able to avoid them completely. Your neighborhood road would suffice if it is not dangerous from traffic. Heck, you can walk back and forth in your driveway, laps in the parking lot of your apartments or work, or make a circuit inside your house if you need to start there or the weather is bad. The mall is a great place also in extreme weather.

Let me just warn anyone who has not been in this situation: “Just don’t have time” is not good enough. Not for me. And not for you.

DON’T HAVE THE TIME?

When you say you don’t have time, what you really mean is that changing your patterns and your schedule to include exercise is difficult.

Changing a pattern is ALWAYS difficult; just getting started is always the hardest part, but once you get over the hump (or maybe mountain), exercising becomes your pattern, and now that becomes the thing that is hard to change.

The local Y’s are great for some of the days, with indoor and outdoor walking areas at the bigger ones, and also all the other scary equipment which you can be shown how to use by a trainer.

This is great to add if you wish, starting very low on the weights. The pool is perfect for folks with mechanical problems, such as back or knee Arthur-itis or back trouble, and just walking back and forth across the shallow end is a great workout. The stationary bikes are also great if you have back or knee problems.

Exercise tapes work for a lot of people. The Nintendo Wii is an amazing video game console and the Wii Fit game has a number of “games” for balance, strength, and even cardio which are also FUN. I highly recommend this machine. (product endorsement NOT paid for).

WHEN? WHAT TIME IS BEST?

You can find recommendations for either morning, evening, mid-day, whatever and various reason why. You must begin within 28 minutes of sunrise to get the perfect blend of cortisol, melatonin, chi and Feng shui for the most benefit of your program. That of course is a bunch of nonsense. Honestly, it makes no significant difference. The best time is whenever you can.

HOW OFTEN?

My suggestion is to do something every day, if at all possible. Start slow and add time slowly. If you can just do two or three days a week, that is fine, too. Anything is better than nothing!

(I should copyright that phrase, I say it so much.)

“OK, I MIGHT ACTUALLY START”

So, if you have progressed all the way to actually contemplating exercising (gotta start somewhere, right?) the first stage is “I will exercise today... if I have time.”

Let me just get you through that stage quickly: If you wait to see if you have time, guess what: you won’t. There are too many other things that will get in the way. Including nothing.

YOU HAVE TO PUT EXERCISE ON THE SCHEDULE.

As in: “I will walk/jog/ride/stagger/ whatever, for 10 minutes at whatever o’clock today”...and then DO IT. TODAY, not tomorrow or next week.

What You Need to Know about Working from Home

In today’s business world, many companies offer their employees the option to work from home. While it can sometimes be challenging, working from home offers many benefits that you might not get in another workplace. So, let’s take a look at what it can be like to work from home.

1. YOU NEED TO FIND A WORK/LIFE BALANCE.

Sometimes it can be difficult to stop working and turn off the computer at night or on the weekends. If you have the option of setting your own hours, create a schedule for working. Think of your work from home job as a 9 to 5 job, but one you can do in your pajamas, if acceptable. Every morning on weekdays, begin your work at the same time, eat lunch at the same time, and end your day at the same time each night. As for the weekends, try to work only if and when needed.

2. SET ASIDE A DESIGNATED WORKSPACE IN YOUR HOME.

This could be an office, a desk in the kitchen, or a table in the living room, but make this space the place you’ll do your job. Having a designated space allows you to spread out all your materials and supplies and keep them there. You don’t have to constantly move things around from room to room or table to table. Plus, this tip keeps your things organized and prevents them from getting lost.

3. STAYING DISCIPLINED IS A HUGE ASPECT OF THIS TYPE OF JOB ATMOSPHERE.

It can be very easy to get distracted by what is on television or what’s going on outside. Staying disciplined helps you stay on task and focused on your work. Turn off the television, close the curtains, if necessary, and make your work your priority, just like you would if you were in a business office. However, if your company allows flexibility, you can use that to your advantage. For example, create a schedule that works for you. It might not be the traditional 9 to 5. You might like working late into the night and sleeping in or vice versa. You might be more productive working on a Saturday afternoon, instead of Monday. It might take a while to discover what works best for you. But, one thing

stays the same – you need to discover a schedule, workspace, etc. that allows you to flourish and accomplish the needed jobs.

4. MOVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

One thing that a person quickly discovers is working from home might mean less walking around and more sitting, since you are working in the comfort of your own home. Also, you might be in a smaller space compared to a corporate office or building. Try to get up every hour and move around. Walk from the back of the house to the front a few times or from the downstairs to upstairs. Set a timer to remind you to get up and stretch every so often. In addition, be sure to take one or two breaks a day to go outside and take in the sunshine.

5. SCHEDULE TIMES TO MEET WITH COLLEAGUES.

Sometimes working from home can be lonely and isolating. Your kids might be at school and spouse at work, meaning you are the only one in the house. Set aside times to meet with your colleagues to discuss work and help maintain a social connection. Just because you are working by yourself doesn’t mean you should completely avoid being an active part in the company for which you are working.

6. CHANGE UP THE SCENERY AT TIMES.

While you do need to have a designated spot to work at home, it never hurts to take your work outside or to a coffee shop for a bit. A change of scenery can be good for you and your work.

7. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

One of the downfalls of working from home is getting too caught up in your job. Always be sure to eat healthy and exercise. It is all about creating the work/life balance, as mentioned in tip #1. Take care of yourself, because the healthier you are, the better able you are able to complete your job.

Working from home can be easy for some people and hard for others.

It is all about creating a balance, setting a schedule, and finding what works for you. If you think working from home is a good fit for you, and your job allows it, maybe give it a try. You might be glad you did.

Presentation in a message is truly everything! Credit card companies believe in their incentive by offering, “Freedom Debt Relief” with the goal of issuing their clients another credit card payment with no interest for a period of time. It may be 18, 24, or 36 months.

Is this truly freedom and relief from the very debt that binds and limits our ability to do more with our income? The larger picture is eliminating the debt, and the seemingly unlimited power of credit.

Yes, it is a challenging concept. Few Americans live strictly by the money they earn, and still have the ability to save. We all have well defined dreams and goals without providing credit card companies a substantial chunk of our hard-earned income on a monthly basis. The dream is present in our minds; yet, the first step is not to use more credit. Instead, a plan must be made to pay off debt, while saving for or having cash in hand for purchases.

HIGHEST INTEREST RATES PAID FIRST

When statements arrive either by mail or email, the balance is the only number which holds our attention. Interest rates or amounts rarely receive a glance simply because we know it is the price of not paying a credit card off in full. Create of list of your credit cards according to their interest, highest to lowest. Begin with a new plan to pay more on the cards with the highest interest. Do you need to carry the cards in your wallet? With a determination to be debt free, this is the moment to eliminate the temptation of “charging” purchases. Take the time to call customer service and learn whether you are eligible for a lowered rate. Ask if the rate could be lowered for 12 months or even six months. It certainly does not hurt to ask.

KEEPING WRITTEN TRACK OF FINANCES

Debt does not have to be a connected to a chain. There is a light at the end of the tunnel if we can visually see when a final payment will occur. The list of expected monthly expenses defines how much money remains at the end of the month.

Consider how much additional money can be added to debt, go to savings, food and other expenses. Creating a strict food budget and offering a set amount to spend for other needs is imperative to eliminating debt. You may discover if you have a set amount, perhaps in cash, you are less likely to go on expensive spending sprees.

A VISUAL CHALLENGE

Save all receipts across one week and one month. Label them according to the purpose of the purchase to understand how money is being spent. Small expenses such as a drink or candy bar adds up. If you know how you spend, you may be able to find an alternative means such as carrying snacks or a case of bottled water in your car. Think of other ways that could reduce spending.

ENTER SAVINGS AS AN EXPENSE

Savings must be treated similar to an expense, and immediately placed in a savings account for the time when an emergency arises, and accessible money is needed.

See if your bank has the option of setting up multiple accounts for insurance, for instance. Paying six months in advance allows the insurer to save money. Additional money that could be entered into an account are for taxes, house projects, your children, and Christmas, are included in accruing monthly “savings.” You may be surprised to discover just how much money is being saved and earning interest.

WHOLE DEBT FREEDOM

Purchasing power is too easy with a credit card. The desire to analyze your spending habits and create a new plan to pay off debt can be empowering, especially when more money no longer is earmarked for expenses. The money becomes a freedom to invest in your hobbies, interests, or simply to realize a lifelong dream! It can happen. It takes a great plan, determination, and getting back on course when obstacles occur!

What is

ACTIVISM?

This world has brewed strong cups of chaos in the past and continues to do that today. One of the most impactful ways to combat upheaval is for many different people to coalesce, stand up and fight for what they believe is fair and just. But there are some masses today who greatly misuse the concept of true activism and ultimately create the ripple for even more chaos. In order for a positive and enduring impact to be made in the world, we must stay aware of the core of what activism is and also what activism should not look like.

WHAT ACTIVISM DOESN’T LOOK LIKE

Activism is not a riot or a hate-charged protest. What do we prove when we burn property, use fire arms, get violent, and throw things? What do we solve when we publicly express fits of rage? Absolutely nothing. Such anger is not productive and will not elicit any form of peace from our environment. Because many people respond more strongly to negativity these days than positivity, these riots which attract more media coverage will likely lead more to believe that creating bedlam is a way of evoking positive change when it’s really not.

There’s no strategy or structure put behind a riot, so chaos continues to ensue.

Activism should not encourage division. It is meant to bring peace between many nations and breeds of people. What kind of positive protest stands for segregation? Division of classes? Or age discrimination? Activism should always be clothed in peace, justice, and love.

Activism requires action and armchair activism has no place in today’s world!

Armchair activism is when you feel so strongly about an issue and motivate others to make a move but you’re the one who is not creating any momentum. Instead, armchair activists sit in their “armchair” while waiting for their political goals to be manifested, when they are the catalysts for the change they want to see. A difference is not made until an activist’s intellect and plans interact with the physical world.

HOW ACTIVISM SHOULD LOOK

Activism is sparked with a thirst for positive change. One must internalize a current societal issue so strongly and be shaken to the core to have a vision for a better world and almost feel the hunger pains for a positive change. One must have a burning passion for the people and for what they stand for and a vision of what their society or the world could be, instead of only seeing it at its current state and saying, “Oh, well, it is what it is.” A passionate leader will attract passionate followers. One must not only have the boldness to promote their world-changing vision, but also the intelligence, wisdom, and influence to materialize it.

Activism is strategic and forward-thinking. It is most successfully carried out when the geniuses behind it are future-oriented and can spot worldly patterns. People who are involved in activism possess a genuine love and awareness for humanity and want to pursue a better nation. True activism is when different people come together under mutual purposes and passions and desire to achieve the same goals.

Shelley, known to many as The Fairy Godmother, began waving her magic wand on March 23-24 at the annual Dressing Event prior to the 2018 Joy Prom held on April 13, 2018 at Calvary Day School. Forty-nine ladies (ages 16 and up) scheduled appointments with The Fairy Godmother to select dresses for the Joy Prom. Ah, but it wasn’t just dresses that they got. No indeed, the ladies were in for a spell of individualized magic, planned just for them.

Shelley and her team of volunteers, coordinated by Linda Sullivan, The Fairy Godmother’s Helper, spend much time prior to the dressing event sorting and organizing the donated dresses and all the accessories needed. Linda scheduled the 30-minute appointments for each lady asking a few key questions such as age, dress size, and most importantly, their favorite color.

Prior to the appointments, Shelley hand selected dresses for guests to try on based on the information provided when they set their appointment.

This year, sizes needed ranged from 00 to 32. In addition to their dress, each guest visited the Accessories Room to pick just the right accessories needed to complete their look – jewelry, a wrap, and an evening bag.

Shelley also had a team of seamstresses available to make minor on-site alterations if needed. The guests’ dresses were then steamed and bagged so they were ready to go for Joy Prom. The appointment, dress, and all the accessories were provided free of charge by The Fairy Godmother’s Closet.

Part of the magic of The Fairy Godmother’s Closet was that Shelley transforms herself into The Fairy Godmother for the guest appointments and tries to spend at least a little time with each guest individually as they try on their attire. Shelley’s team of volunteers helps each guest try on and make their final decision on which dress they not only like, and that flatters their figure, but most importantly, which dress they feel best in. “Everyone needs a day to see themselves as beautiful as they are,” explained Shelley, “and through their experience at The Fairy Godmother’s Closet and the donated dresses, I feel like that goal was accomplished.”

“A visit to the Fairy Godmother’s Closet is more than a trip to pick out a dress to wear to Joy Prom Winston-Salem, it is an EXPERIENCE!” Linda shared. “The excitement each lady exudes as they experience The Fairy Godmother’s Closet is indescribable! It’s quite common to see tears in the eyes of volunteers who help the ladies go through The Fairy Godmother’s Closet experience.”

Closet The Fairy Godmother’s job was not finished after the closet shopping days ended. Shelley personally greeted each guest as they arrived at the 4th annual Joy Prom Winston-Salem 2018. Upon arrival, each guest received a corsage or boutonniere as they checked in and were assigned a personal escort for the evening. The guests entered via a red carpet, each announced by name. The evening included a DJ, Bingo, crafts, a buffetstyle meal, a quiet room, a professional photographer, and a caregiver room. It was a memorable evening!

HOW TO CLEAN THE UPHOLSTERY

When the majority of our activity is spent seated in a vehicle, it takes hours to a few days to realize the fresh and clean upholstery requires a touch-up. Accidents happen, whether it is an on-the-go meal or a spilled drink. No matter whether the interior is leather, cloth, or carpet, it does not take long for stains to appear. Here are a few tips to help you tackle messy situations.

KEEP A WIDE RANGE OF SUPPLIES

Preparation is the key when situations occur, especially while you are on the road. While you may not have the available time to remove a stain or spill, a few supplies can make a difference; therefore, consider keeping a few clean rags, a bottle of water, baking soda, plastic bags and gallon-sized Ziploc bags, and glass cleaner in your vehicle.

The difficulty with spray-on cleaners is they release a toxic smell, which tends to linger and intensify in small spaces. For liquid situations such as blood, spilled coffee, or vomit, immediately dilute the location with cool water and start blotting. Baking soda is a key ingredient to help saturate into the fibers or ease a stain on vinyl that needs to be removed (it has the ability to pull up the stain; therefore, do not blot). Allow the baking soda to sit, and vacuum when you have the chance. Use Ziploc bags or plastic bags to contain the rags and smell. (Don’t forget about them!)

INK STAINS

• Leather can be cleaned with a cloth soaked in a mixture of water and low-pH soap. Once wiped clean, allow to dry thoroughly.

Apply a leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking.

One handy fact is ink can be removed with hairspray. After application, allow the chemical to absorb for a few minutes. You can reapply if needed. Then, dab dry.

• Vinyl is easily cleaned with a sprinkling of baking soda directly on the seats and scrubbed with a damp rag. Afterward, rinse with a wet cloth. Do not apply oil or mineral based cleaners to the vinyl.

In time, the vinyl will become rigid, and quite uncomfortable.

A DIFFERENT METHOD TO CHALLENGING UPHOLSTERY

After shampooing a material, consider applying a fabric protector to ease the process of cleaning future stains.

Thick woven fabric is a challenge to clean. Try using a cup of ammonia with a pint of water. A mop may be recommended for this process; the goal is to allow the diluted ammonia to absorb into the fabric. Afterward, blot the excess water.

GREASE STAINS

Use a utensil to scrape off dried grease; however, if the stain is wet, then blot the excess grease using a damp towel or cloth. Sprinkle baking soda, covering the stain, and allow the grease to absorb from the upholstery for up to 20 minutes. It is important to not dab the stain to push the grease down into the material. Vacuum.

DEEP CLEANING

Not all upholstery requires the same means of cleaning. For instance, fabric can be cleaned by mixing a cup of vinegar, and dishwashing soap in a gallon of hot water. A hard-bristled brush can ease the ingredients into the fibers. After 30 minutes, rinse with a rag and clean water, and absorb the remaining water.

AN ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER

There are a number of factors to consider when cleaning upholstery.

1. How old is the stain?

2. What is the composition of the stain?

3. What type of fabric are you cleaning?

4. What cleaners have you tried?

Not all upholstery shampoos and cleaners can solve the problem.

It is important to read the label to determine if the cleaner you have chosen is recommended for leather, general upholstery shampoos, or carpet. Natural cleaners such as baking soda, vinegar, soap, and water have the power to remove difficult stains at a fraction of the cost of commercial brands. Keep trying. With continued application, many stains can be removed in time.

Plants Become Stressed and Sick, Too!

Not all plants are transparent with their needs. Take the beautiful peace lily, for instance. The emerald leaves will begin to wilt as an indication the soil lacks moisture. By pushing one finger six inches through the surface, you will be able to determine the condition of the soil. For a quick pep-me-up solution for dry soil, all it requires is a drink of water; however, a larger problem may arise when a plant receives too much water. Air will be pushed out of the soil and suffocate the roots. Stress will be noticed through the color of the leaves; perhaps changing from a rich green to a sickly lighter coloring, and before long, spot before turning brown. A quick relocation to a new pot may be the solution. Not all plants survive stress and sickness. The best news of all is that if plants are healthy, they can rebound from unexpected problems! Identifying the signs, acting immediately, and implementing a remedy can improve the results.

PLANT SHOCK

A second reaction to wilting relates is to provide too much sunlight.

Plant shock will be noticeable by a change of color in the leaves termed bleaching. The discoloration could be a result of sunburn, or a response when plants have not had the time to adapt to a new location, such as a placement in direct sunlight and heat.

The solution is to move the houseplant into a location with the greatest amount of shade, and to expose tender plants to sunlight gradually over a few days. Do not worry about sunburn; removing the deadened leaves will foster new healthy shoots. After a few weeks, houseplants should be well adapted to thrive outdoors.

If planting in a garden, pair up with flowers that would be considered heat-loving perennials such as black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, coreopsis, daylilies, lantana, Russian sage, and verbena, and incorporate herbs such as thyme and rosemary. Many herbs will attract the good insects to devour the ones which cause havoc. Tall flowers can easily shield less heat resistant plants. (Take notice of the sun’s movements and plan well before planting!)

SOIL DEFICIENCIES

Blue, red, yellow, and purple are not colors one would naturally expect from green leaved plants. Blueberry plants, for instance, will turn bright red due to poorly drained soil when low levels of nitrogen or phosphorous are present. (If you are seeing a lack of growth, relocate and amend the soil with pine bark, compost, and sand to improve drainage.) Tomato plants, corn stalks, and marigolds will often have a phosphorous deficiency by displaying reddishpurple leaves. A liquid fertilizer will help balance the problem, which may be due to poor soil or drainage issues. Supplementing the soil with compost (such as banana peels, crushed egg shells, and coffee grounds, added directly around your plants will help boost the minerals in the soil.

BANISHING INSECTS

Amidst the gardening season, gardeners may be unaware of the insects that either gravitate toward leaves or are found within the soil. There are steps you can take to make your garden less inviting to those pests. A squash plant, for instance, will thrive one day, and be weak and defenseless the next. Aphids, a small insect, will consume the underside of leaves and the trunk. Spray immediately with a strong blast of water, or use insecticidal soap. (Aphids can also destroy your house plants, too!)

Click beetles, found in the soil, feed on the root of the plant. You will notice the plant becoming weaker, and unable to grow. While they thrive in poor soil, it is important to prepare the soil by tilling and adding healthy compost or a soil conditioner prior to planting.

Beyond a drink of water, our plants show us their state of health, and often it is seen in the leaves. Take a long purposeful stroll through your garden to be watchful for signs.

Lift leaves and inspect for insects, spots, or discoloration. You may be the one who can act fast, provide a remedy, and revive a plant in a state of stress!

BY LISA S.T. DOSS Droplets of water pound against the windows leaving a reminder of Mother Nature’s impression. Evidence of pools of standing water may be found close to the house or throughout the yard. Underneath these poor drainage locations, moss may be evident where neither flowers nor grass can grow. Standing water may result in a larger problem if it travels toward the house’s foundation and weakens it. The solution may not be simple or quick; yet, there are ways for you to start enjoying your yard again.

ASSESSING THE SITUATION

A well-drained property slopes gradually away from the house.

Homeowners can measure the distance from the foundation and extend out ten feet. There should be a slight decline where water can descend, almost rolling to another location.

DRAW A DRAINING PLAN

A sketch of your property detailing the house, decks, steps, driveway and street, as well as how the water flows, marked with directional arrows, will determine high and low spots in your yard. Whether this “drainage plan” is a visual for you or a professional, it will certainly help to pinpoint the problem and create a plan.

DRAINAGE TEST

To determine what is occurring underground, dig a hole measuring two feet in depth and width. Fill the hole, reaching the surface, with water. If the water is drained within an hour, your drainage is excellent; however, a problem will be evident if water remains after 12 hours. If it remains beyond 24 hours, it indicates a significant problem affecting trees and shrubs.

GUTTERS, RAIN BARRELS, AND DRAINAGE DITCHES

Are your gutters working properly or clogged? This may be one reason why excess amounts of water are present near the foundation. If the water puddles beyond the gutter, you may consider creating an extension. Two possibilities would work.

1. An ecofriendly means is to capture the water in rain barrels, and use for a multitude of purposes, especially watering newly planted trees

or flowers or during periods of drought. Consider adding a rain barrel to other buildings on your property, such as barns or garages.

2. A secondary action may be to install a French drain, which is an underground drainage ditch. Where water normally gathers, a fourinch diameter drain pipe could carry the water to a six-inch deep graveled location five-feet underground. These types of ditches can prevent water from reaching the foundation as well as eliminate puddles on the surface.

RAIN GARDEN

If you are seeking to add a feature to your yard, consider a rain garden.

Growing in popularity, a rain garden has become a practical, beautiful solution to drainage problems. Located in a low spot in the yard, roughly ten feet away from the house, rainwater is used to redirect flow to plants. If the soil is predominately clay or a combination of soil and sand, compost or light soil will need to be added. To prevent seeds from washing away, choose native plants, shrubs, and trees with a deep root system, such as daylilies and cannas, Minnie Pearl phlox and blue lobelia, red switch grass and inkberry bush, or sweet bay Magnolia or the red maple. Through North Carolina’s State Cooperative Extension Office, homeowners can find more information about how to design a rain garden to ease drainage and attract birds, butterflies, and bees.

DRY CREEK

A second beautiful feature that blends in with your yard combines a variety of sized rocks with a flavoring of plants. This “dry creek” remains beautiful with a trickle of water to seasons of drought. Just imagine a low area in your yard divided by river stones and large rocks surrounded by cascading plants or shrubs. While the “dry creek” eliminates standing areas of water, it provides a low-maintenance and strikingly attractive means to help water find a place to travel.

Expensive to inexpensive solutions are available to those who need a pathway to redirect water. It is time you start feeling positive when hearing thunder or a downpour of rain. Perhaps, rain will force a new reaction rather than worry… grab your umbrella and start singing, “Singing in the Rain!”

THE PURPOSEFUL MUDROOM Every household needs a transitional room between the outdoors and indoors to contain the items that essentially clutter the home.

In your house, it may be defined as a menagerie of footwear and coats, sports equipment, and a means to clean muddy or wet paws.

The popularity of such an essential room has increased in the last two decades. Initially designed as a second entryway into the home, and often located in the back or side of the house, mudrooms today have expanded to large rooms with ample storage to accentuate a neat and organized system for the arrival home of each member of the household. No matter the size of the room or area, this hidden room can be designed to foster both aesthetics and functionality. It simply needs access to an exterior door.

BENEFITS OF A MUDROOM

It can be tiring to clean up the entrance to the home every time the family, pets, or visitors walk through the threshold. Think of a location which could contain a bench and baskets for shoes, low hooks for coats, pegs for key chains and dog leashes and, quite possibly, horizontal open shelving to hold various accessories for each member of your family. Imagine knowing a coat, a pair of shoes, or a set of keys are nicely contained in one location, the mudroom. With the improved organization, time is not spent looking in multiple rooms to find a specific item.

THE FAMILY PET

On rainy days, towels may be strewn across the floor; water droplets sprayed on furniture and walls each time the family dog enters the home. One solution is to have an area that could contain a sink or deep well to hold wet or dirty items. A more elaborate concept would include a location to wash off feet, and especially paws.

AN IDEAL LOCATION

A mudroom already exists in your home without the need for construction. Consider the logistics.

• If you have a large kitchen, part of the room can be easily converted. A partition may assist to conceal this defined area of your home. For new construction, you may want to consider adding a wall for privacy and separation.

• A garage can offer a convenient location for a mudroom as long as it is an entrance for the entire family.

• Access through a storage, utility, or laundry room can especially appease the need for a mudroom.

While dirty clothes can be easily removed, it also may offer enough space for shoes or potentially a sink or deep well.

• Other rooms to consider for mudrooms may be a sunroom or basement.

PLAN A MULTI-FUNCTIONING ROOM

The key to a mudroom is personalizing it to your family’s needs. By making a room multi-functional, you can integrate a myriad of purposes both inside and out. Here are a few ideas that you can make use of in your mudroom.

• Select a floor which is easy to clean and maintain, such as stone, tile, or vinyl. A rug or floor mat at the threshold can absorb water or dirt before stepping inside.

• The walls will need a layer of protection against scrapes and dirt.

Consider adding bead board or wainscoting.

• Ventilation is an important aspect to prevent mildew from forming; therefore, a fan can control the humidity and maintain the room at a comfortable level.

• Would a message board assist the family? Reminders of important phone numbers and listing who has appointments, practices, or classes after school may be a great help.

• A small mirror is an added touch instead of wondering, “I hope I look okay!”

• Consider what would assist the family the most, such as a bench, hooks, a separate location for keys, and what types of storage, baskets or open shelving are most useful.

Mudrooms can be beautiful, accommodating rooms, despite the fact that they are unseen by visitors. Your mudroom can be designed with your needs in mind.

Walking in hand with a young child, the question, “What is that name of that flower?” often arises.

Sometimes the answer is known, while other times, it could simply be lost to memory or labeled a weed.

We have all seen flowers that could be described as long bright yellow petals cascading back or a narrow leaved purple coneflower. Both grow as wildflowers; yet, each has exceptional health benefits, such as improving mood and bodily pain or preventing sickness. St. John’s wort and echinacea are two lifesaving medicinal remedies for millions of men and women and could be a new miracle herbal supplement for you, too!

ST. JOHN’S WORT

As far back as the first century, Greek physicians used what became known as St. John’s wort for medicinal purposes. Its properties have the ability to create many actions in the body and promote a broad definition of healing. One of the most popular herbal therapies is to ease the symptoms of mild to moderate depression.

Though scientific studies have proven St. John’s wort to be effective, there is a warning. Do not begin the regime without consulting your doctor first. While it takes several weeks to a month to begin noticing a difference in mood, for example, the supplement can produce substantial side effects if combined with other specific prescribed drugs.

DRYING FLOWERS

ECHINACEA

As an American plant species in the sunflower family, the coneflower has another important botanical name: echinacea. Since the 1800s, this plant was used by American Indians, who used it for blood purification, treatment of dizziness, and rattlesnake bites. Prior to the arrival of modern day antibiotics, extracts from the plant were used to treat infections.

Known for its abilities to stimulate the immune system, most teas offering a boost of wellness include the ingredient echinacea; however, the ingredient can also be found in topicals to assist in healing wounds. Echinacea may also potentially shorten the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, and trials are ongoing to discover whether echinacea can be used in cancer therapy.

There are currently no known adverse reactions to echinacea.

These multi-purpose flowers planted as plants or seeds would be a wonderful addition to your flower or vegetable garden, or growing in pots. As perennials, the advantage is witnessing the flowers bloom year after year. The art of drying flowers is a therapeutic pastime, but by expanding the understanding of medicinal flowers, you can begin to incorporate herbal ingredients into your meals or learn how to make tinctures or oils. The history of medicinal plants is almost gone unless we continue to expand our knowledge.

Dr. Leslie Branch is a plastic surgeon with Forsyth Plastic Surgery.

She was born and raised in Winston-Salem and graduated from Pepperdine University in 2007 in the top 10% of her class with a degree in sports medicine. Taryn Griggs is a professional dancer and certified Pilates instructor.

She graduated from UNC’s School of the Arts (UNCSA) in 1999 with a degree in contemporary dance and has been dancing professionally for the past 20 years. She currently teaches at Inner Strength Pilates, UNCSA and the Gateway YWCA. She loves movement and helping people learn to move with ease and efficiency. She offers several Pilates for Dancer classes as well as private, semi-private and group instruction courses at Inner Strength Pilates. When not working and dancing, Taryn enjoys spending time with her family, cooking and working on home renovation projects. She has also organized a dance performance series in town called, Food For Thought (modeled on the program of the same name in NYC), which features artists presenting short works on a combined program. The performances collect donations for the NWNC Food Bank as admission.

Ruby Griffin recently received the prestigious Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.

As described by North Carolina’s official website, the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award “honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service.” Professionally, Ruby worked as a manager with Southern Bell/AT&T for 34 years. After retiring from that career, she worked for seven years as a bank teller for Sun Trust Bank. She started volunteering shortly thereafter and has not slowed down since. Ruby volunteers for many agencies, although Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care were instrumental in getting her nominated for the Governor’s award. Through volunteering, she demonstrates an outstanding love for children, animals, North Carolina’s historical heritage; but most of all, society as a whole. She shows remarkable dedication to those in need and performs extraordinary service in her community. Even with all of her commitments, Ruby still finds time to enjoy the things she loves – cooking, gardening, cross stitching, reading and dancing.

Britny Parks is the tasting room manager at Medaloni Cellars. She earned her bachelors degree in psychology and child development from East Carolina University in 2013 before working part time for Medaloni Cellars. Through learning the process of making wine from Joey Medaloni, taking on the roll as tasting room manager and booking all weddings and events, she turned her part time position into a full time career. “I love being a part of this community,” said Britny. “I love getting to know my regulars and my locals. The people who walk through our door aren’t just customers, they’re our Medaloni Cellars family. I also love being able to book and support our local artists, musicians and food trucks as well as support local businesses on my own time.” When Britny isn’t working, she enjoys getting away to the mountains, the beach and the lake so she can relax with a glass of wine!

From Overweight Misfit to Miss Fit Boss:

Meet Liz Hronek

Liz Hronek is one of those people who can truly say her experiences have shaped her. She spent over half her life struggling with her weight and tried every conceivable diet plan. Liz attended her first Weight Watchers meeting when she was only eight years old. By the time Liz was in college, she weighed 300 pounds.

“I tried so many weight loss programs,” said Liz. “I’d lose weight, and then gain it all back. I was completely disconnected from my body. No matter how many pounds I lost, I didn’t know what healthy felt like. So I would gain it all back.”

The degree of Liz’s disconnect came to light when she learned she was pregnant – the day before she gave birth. That day was a game changer in more ways than one.

“After my daughter was born, I got serious about making a change,” explained Liz. “While I would encourage anyone who wants to lose weight to do it for themselves, at the time, I didn’t love myself enough to do it for me. But I did love my daughter, so I decided to do it for her. I missed the joys of pregnancy because I existed in my body. I didn’t really live in it. When she was born, I committed to making a lifelong change. I knew the weight loss techniques I’d used since I was a child weren’t the answer. But I was determined to figure it out.”

Liz spent the next 18 months learning how to be a mother and how to change her life. She lost over half her body weight and dealt with the emotional weight that was contributing to the physical weight.

“I know what it’s like to commit to being healthy, and one little trigger can cause the whole thing to collapse.

That’s why it can’t be a ‘house of cards’ approach. Weight loss has

to be more substantial than a flimsy basis,” Liz continued. “I know how it feels to be ashamed of my looks and feel uncomfortable in my clothes,” she went on. “When I finally got control of my weight (instead of letting my weight control me!), I was determined to help others who wanted to walk the same path.”

Liz has been a certified personal trainer for eight years and also has nutritional therapy certification. She’s taken her expertise in the industry, along with a lifelong voice of experience, and created a program that is designed to inspire, empower, and equip anyone who is serious about a lifelong change.

Formerly “Liz Fit Life,” Miss Fit Boss is a unique and affordable program. The program begins on Facebook – where members are a part of a closed group community that allows for both privacy and community support. Members have access to five new workout videos every month, which range between 15 – 30 minutes per session.

The 411 on Flip Flops

Flip flops first appeared in the U.S. after World War II when soldiers brought this novelty footwear home from Japan. Since that humble debut, flip flops have become the warm weather footwear favorite that now practically symbolizes summer. Flip flops are casual and fun, but fashionable, too, available in every imaginable color and style, graced with flowers, bows, college logos, and innumerable other adornments. When the mercury rises, flip flops keep your feet cool and let you show off your pedi. What’s not to love?

While the fun and fashion aspects of flip flops are indisputable, there are a few drawbacks you should know about. In terms of foot health and protection, flip flops are a good news/bad news scenario.

First, the good news. Whether you are walking or just standing around chatting with friends, flip flops are always better than going barefoot. They provide basic protection for your feet when you’re on any hot or rough surface, such as a sidewalk or the concrete around a swimming pool. Wearing flip flops also protects you from the fungus that causes athlete’s foot, an infection you can catch simply by coming in contact with skin flakes on the floor of a public shower or gym. Similarly, flip flops can spare your feet from plantar warts, which are also contagious, transmitted when the plantar surface of your foot (the sole) comes in contact with the offending

virus. The germ barrier created by flip flops is especially important if you happen to be diabetic and have a cut or sore on the bottom of your feet.

Here’s the downside to flip flops, which is much more significant. While flip flops can spare you from an encounter with a fungus or virus, they don’t provide much protection from injury. Flip flops leave you vulnerable to stubbed toes, puncture wounds, torn toenails, and anything accidentally dropped on your foot.

In addition, flip flops provide no arch support, no heel cushioning, and no shock absorption, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

That’s why it’s important to know when not to wear flip flops.

Experts say that flip flops are never the right footwear choice when you will be: • Doing a lot of walking — a day of shopping or visiting a zoo or amusement park, for example.

• Running or playing sports. Flip flops are a poor substitute for athletic shoes.

Wearing flip flops even for an impromptu game of Frisbee can land you in the emergency room with a sprain or a fracture.

• Mowing or doing yardwork. Flip flops are no match for mowers, string trimmers, or the critters that hang out in yards and fields—bugs and snakes.

Close contact with Mother Nature always calls for closed-toed shoes.

• Driving. This is a safety issue. If one of your flip flops comes off or gets stuck under the gas or brake pedal, you might be risking a fender bender or worse.

We all love flip flops for their convenience. Flip flops are so easy to slip on to run a quick errand, walk a few feet to the mailbox, or join some friends for lunch. But if you wear flip flops when you shouldn’t, that is, when something more supportive or protective is called for, as in the bullet points above, your feet may repay you with arch pain, tendonitis, heel pain, or even a sprained ankle.

If you want to avoid foot problems, but you don’t want to trade the breezy summer feel of flip flops for shoes, the APMA suggests a compromise: supportive sandals such as those made by Dansko, Rockport, or Wolky. If those options don’t appeal to you, consider Crocs, which at least protect your toes.

Flip flops are wildly popular, in part, because they are so inexpensive. The cheapest flip flops, unfortunately, are made from the materials you should avoid: plastic and rubber. The decision to spend a little more on flip flops can mean better protection for your feet. The best flip flops are those made of soft leather, which helps protect your feet from blisters and irritations. Better flip flops often also provide some arch support, which can be a big plus if you wear them a lot. Before you buy a pair of flip flops, give them the bend test: if you can easily bend flip flops completely in half, they are too flimsy. Some bending at the ball of the foot is okay; you need that flexibility to walk.

A final pearl of wisdom from foot care professionals is to keep in mind that flip flops wear out over time. Before you slip on last summer’s flip flops, inspect them for wear and tear. If they are looking worn, throw them out and get new ones. (Your feet will thank you!)

Q&A with Samantha Kichman, Traveler

BY SAVANNAH NORRIS Samantha Kichman, born in South Korea, has never known a life where she hasn’t been traveling. Between trips to Portugal and Honduras and living in Florence for the fall of her fourthgrade year, Samantha found at a young age that traveling was just as important to her as it had always been to her mom. Now graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Samantha is ready to start her own travels, moving on from the university life to life abroad.

The following are all questions we’re dying to have answered:

WHERE ARE YOU GOING NEXT & WHY?

Samantha plans to start her journey in Europe, spending time in Georgia, Istanbul, Edinburgh, Oxford, and Bordeaux, before heading to Africa to spend the rest of the summer with her mom.

She’s not entirely sure what’s on the agenda, but drinking wine, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and walking the Camino de Santiago through the north of Spain are in the books as of right now until September of this year.

In September, Samantha starts an internship in South Africa working with an organization that stops human trafficking until November, when she will be volunteering in Cambodia for five weeks working on various projects, including teaching English. Post-Africa, Samantha is heading to the UK to do research for a few months in hopes of turning her honors thesis on Women’s Literary Tradition of WWI into a book. Should she be given the fellowships she applies for, funding will take her to archives around the world, as well as Greece, Lebanon, or Jordan to work with Syrian refugees to complete her research. Depending how the book goes, she may go to graduate school, but right now she’s waiting to see where this plan takes her.

WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO STAY?

Many people, when they choose to stay abroad, will rent a home for several months or stay in hostels, but because Sam and her mom are staying in some of the countries for as little as four days, services like Airbnb and Couchsurfing are easy, cost-effective options. Airbnb allows you to stay in an entire home or private rooms for a fraction of hotel or vacation rental costs, and Couchsurfing allows you to stay in a home with a family or couple for free. Hostels, while a great option, aren’t always the cleanest option.

Sam and her mom have heard one too many bed bug horror stories. They stick to Airbnb and Couchsurfing for that reason.

DO YOU MISS HOME WHILE TRAVELING?

Home is a hard word. Growing up a traveler, home was just really wherever you were at the time. It

was more about who you were with than where you were, Samantha explains, saying “My mom sold my childhood home in Colorado when I was a sophomore in college and since I went to college, I feel like the only home I really have is my mom.”

CAN JUST ANYONE TRAVEL LIKE YOU & YOUR MOM?

There’s a difference between a vacationer and a traveler. A vacationer is accommodated and usually has a plan for the day. They are visiting Jamaica’s most beautiful waters for a week; they are exploring the streets of Italy for a month. Travelers, like Sam and her mom, are more gung-ho. They work by goals (like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro) and take opportunities as they come. Sometimes, the places they stay aren’t that nice. “Once I dropped my eyeliner down this giant black hole in the bathroom. I don’t know why there was a hole there and I didn’t ask. The woman I was staying with didn’t speak English,” Sam explained.

To be a traveler, you have to really love immersing yourself in a culture.

Samantha Kichman and her mom are best friends. Though they don’t live a conventional life, they have a lot of fun traveling the world together.

The Cash Envelope Method

Every so often, I add a new trick to my budgeting system. Sometimes this new addition helps, and sometimes it doesn’t. Recently, I tried the cash envelope method, also known as the envelope budgeting system, and this was definitely a positive move. The idea is that you pay everything in cash and don’t use a credit or debit card. Instead, you withdraw a certain amount of cash from your bank account and divide it into the payments needed for different expenses. Then, place each amount of cash into an envelope, label it with the name of the expense, and don’t touch it until paid. Sounds simple, right? Well, after using this system for about a month, I discovered there were some advantages and disadvantages.

• It works, but you need lots and lots of discipline. With the cash envelope method, preparation and organization are key. At the beginning of each month, as you are preparing your budget, think about what expenses are automatic withdrawals or can be paid with cash or check. Then, schedule in the bills that will be automatically taken out of your account. After calculating your new bank account total, determine how much money will be needed for the rest of the month’s expenses. For me, all of my bills are automatic withdrawals, so I used this method for my extra expenses, such as groceries, toiletries, etc.

Lastly, be prepared to make multiple trips to the bank or ATM. For me, I withdraw money in larger amounts and then set aside individual amounts for the different expenses.

To calculate that bigger amount, I added in how much I would spend on the individual expenses.

Getting started can be confusing at first, but it is worth it.

• One downfall for me was not recounting my extra cash often. Early on, I allotted different amounts for upcoming expenses. However, if I didn’t spend all of that certain amount, I had change left over (mostly one dollar bills). But, I discovered I was able to use this loose cash on expenses that popped up during the month (it acted as an emergency fund). Lastly, when I didn’t count my cash often, I relied on my debit card for some purchases.

One of the ways to fix this mistake is by always knowing the amount of cash you have on hand.

• It provides you with a sense of security. I went ahead and set aside money for upcoming, planned expenses towards the end of the month. When the expense was finally needed, I was at ease knowing I already had the money for it and didn’t have to worry.

• Adjust your system to fit your needs. The cash envelope method is very flexible and can be individualized for any budget. For me, it worked best continuing the automatic withdrawals and using this system for the remainder of my monthly expenses. For you, it might work better to use the method for everything, including your bills. Find what works for you. This budgeting method should help your budget, not harm it.

• Stick with it. This method is unique and will take time to work. Try using this system for only a few weeks and then you can lengthen the time as you become familiar and comfortable with it.

The cash envelope method is something I will continue to use in my budget system. After time, I will be perfecting what works and how I can make it better. You can do the same. Give this method a try, at least once, because you never know how much more money you’ll have left over after all expenses are paid.

Where Were You When the Earthquake Hit?

Do you recall where you were the day Winston-Salem and surrounding cities shook from an earthquake? To refresh your memory, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter near Mineral, Virginia, hit the east coast on August 23, 2011.

That afternoon at about 1:52 pm I was standing near the kitchen sink in my home in Advance transferring a casserole from a pan to Tupperware.

The television on a nearby wooden and metal hutch was tuned to a news channel reporting that Muammar Gaddafi’s Libyan compound was just invaded by rebel forces. The volume on the TV was low.

Suddenly, the floor trembled and I felt wobbly. I heard a low rumbling outside and thought that perhaps a tornado touched down. However, the sky was clear with no breeze so I quickly ruled out the tornado theory. As I stood attentively in the kitchen, I heard the metal frame of the hutch creak as if someone was shaking it or shut a drawer hard, causing it to rattle. Since I was the only one in the house this simply couldn’t be. At the same time I also heard our grandfather clock in the living room making musical sounds as if someone was tinkering with its chime rods. I walked to the hutch and put my hand on a shelf trying to figure out why it was shaking. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but something was definitely not right.

I turned up the volume on the television and just as I did a scrolling red news banner popped on the screen reporting that a major earthquake had just hit the east coast of the U.S. A reporter said tremors were felt from as far north as Rhode Island to as far south as North Carolina.

Residents from North Carolina were calling in and e-mailing the station reporting that they felt the earthquake.

The reporter said the White House was evacuated and people were just starting to come to grips with the fact that a 5.8 magnitude earthquake had just hit. Locally, the quake was reported on WXII 12 with links

for live updates. The Winston-Salem Journal also reported that while we had “shakes and shimmers, no damage was reported in Forsyth County.” However, they also reported a “barrage of cellphone calls” disrupted service and that emergency officials received several 911 calls.

The earthquake caused some buildings in downtown Winston-Salem to be evacuated including the 18-story GMAC building. Many people ran outside in fear after feeling tremors. One woman reported the chandelier in her Clemmons condo swayed and she and her husband were in disbelief that this could actually be an earthquake. Another person said her house shook for 30 seconds.

Since this was my first earthquake ever, I was excited and called my wife Kathy who was in Florida. She hadn’t yet heard the news. Kathy later informed me that my daughter-in-law in Apex, NC, called her right after I did to ask about our well-being and the status of our home. Kathy told her all was well and I sent my son in Apex a text telling him about the quake. He texted back, “Cool.” He said his customers were also e-mailing and texting about the earthquake.

I guess we could call this cool, because fortunately, it was an extremely minor earthquake in our area. It was more scary than anything else.

However, I doubt we would think it was cool if we had received more damage. At my home, the shaking lasted for about 20 seconds or less.

It happened very quickly and then it was over. Later in the week we learned this was the largest Virginia earthquake since 1897. Interestingly, North Carolina has been hit by larger earthquakes, with some causing damage. Statistically, this happened 22 times from 1732 to the present.

The last damaging earthquake occurred in 1981 in Henderson County.

If you are interested in learning more about this subject, Google “earthquakes and North Carolina.” For now, my main questions are these, “Will there be another earthquake?” If there is, “Where will I be when it happens?” I suspect you may ask yourself the same questions.
