The View From This Side JULY 2018

At the June Girls’ Night Out, we had a moment that only comes once in a blue moon – an event so rare, it could even be called a miracle.

My husband got up and danced. Can you believe it?? I kid around, but seriously… if you know Tim, you know he’s not a dancer. This was a special moment, indeed, and I’m grateful that my sister-in-law snapped this photo.

Speaking of my husband, he’s been retired for 1 ½ years this month, and we’ve been in our new home for a full year. Best decision ever. While I’m still working (and can’t imagine stopping!), I love the retirement life with my husband! It’s great to spend time together, and after so many years of working, it’s nice to see him enjoy himself and spend time on the things he wants to do!

As we were putting this issue together, we had a major change in our business. We are almost finished restructuring all of our procedures. It’s like a facelift for our business, but with technology, forms, and something I’ve dreamed of for years – a back office for our team. While these changes aren’t seen by our readers or advertisers, we are excited about them.

While we are always proud of the magazines we produce, we have long embraced the motto, “Work smarter, not harder!”

These tools are enabling us to do just that, and we hope that through these new streamlined processes, you’ll see the results in the final product.

I know many vacations are being planned and it always thrills us when we see photos of Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family in exotic locations! It’s always an honor to know our readers pack us up and take us with them on their trips! If you’re traveling this month, please have a safe journey!

RECIPE: Summer Margaritas

Whether you are sitting on a sunny tropical island or in your own backyard oasis, an ice-cold drink always seems the most appropriate. When I close my eyes and feel the warmth of summer, I immediately begin to reach for a frozen margarita -- even before reaching for the sunscreen. If you’re like me, and your cocktails take priority, then I’m here to share with you three simple (but delicious!) recipes that will keep your taste buds quenched through these hot summer nights. Versatile and classic, each recipe can be customized to your preference, and while each recipe is one serving, they can be easily batched to feed a crowd.

CLASSIC MARGARITA INGREDIENTS

• ½ ounce agave • ¼ cup lime juice (key lime juice works great, too!)

• 1 ½ ounce tequila • ¾ ounce triple sec • Ice • Lime wedges, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake, strain and serve over ice.

Garnish with a salted rim and/or lime wedges if desired.

PALOMA MARGARITA

CUCUMBER MARGARITA

A twist on this classic tequila cocktail. This marries the best of a Paloma and a Margarita.

Incredibly refreshing! An added touch of jalapeno for an extra kick but is 100% optional.

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

Grenadine • 1 ½ ounce tequila • ¼ cup grapefruit juice • 1 ounce lime juice • ½ ounce agave • Ice

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake, strain and serve over ice. Finish with a splash of grenadine.

Garnish with a salted rim and/ or grapefruit slices if desired.

• 1 ounce tequila • ¼ cup lime juice • ½ ounce agave • ½ ounce orange liqueur • 1 cucumber, sliced • Jalapeno, for garnish • Ice

DIRECTIONS

Muddle cucumber in the bottom of a glass cup. Add tequila, lime juice, agave, orange liqueur and ice to the muddled cucumber.

Shake, strain and serve over ice. Add sliced cucumber and jalapeno for garnish if desired.

When it comes to summer cocktails, a margarita can’t be beat! Frozen, on the rocks, classic or with a twist, margaritas are my go-to summer cocktail to feed a crowd or enjoy on my own. These simple recipes are perfect to join you poolside on these squelching summer days!

SUNGLASSES  ARE THEY NECESSARY?

Selecting sunglasses is difficult for most of us. They come in all shapes, sizes, prices, colors. Which ones are the right ones? Should I pay a lot for them? Should I buy the large ones or the dark ones? Do I really need them or should I wear them just to look cool? It can be so confusing.

First, let’s answer the question: Should I wear sunglasses? The answer is yes. The sun gives off UV radiation that you can’t see or feel. In small doses, it can boost vitamin D, but too much of it can cause problems like sunburns, skin cancer, and many eye problems.

With overexposure, the sun may cause the conjunctiva (the thin membrane covering the white of your eye) to thicken and become irritated and inflamed. Sometimes the conjunctiva will begin to grow over the eye, and this is called a pterygium. Surgical removal is often necessary, as it can interfere with your vision.

Some evidence is indicating a connection between macular degeneration and the exposure to UV light. Persons with blue eyes may be more susceptible than someone with brown eyes.

Certain types of cataracts, which is a cloudiness on the lens of your eye that can also interfere with your vision, can be caused by overexposure to the sun.

Corneas can become acutely sunburned, causing serious pain and temporary blindness. When tanning beds first became popular, it was very common to treat patients who had “burned corneas.”

Cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes is very common, and sunglasses can help protect against the damaging rays. Sunglasses that “wrap around the side of the eye” can be beneficial as persons can get too much sun when driving in a car.

Last but not least, sunglasses make being outside more comfortable.

They protect the eyes from the glare and wind which cause squinting, watering, and dryness.

Should children wear sunglasses? Yes, they should. Children are typically outdoors more than adults, making protection at an early age more crucial.

Sure, sunglasses can look “cool” depending on the style one chooses.

Polarization and/or antireflective coating is selected by a lot of people in order to reduce glare. However, the most important feature is UV PROTECTION. Before you think about buying a pair of sunglasses, read the label. Does it say they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays? If not, don’t buy them. All sunglasses should have this feature to provide adequate protection from harmful rays. The size is also important. Wraparounds can block additional rays from the side, and larger frames can better protect the front of the eye.

Talk with your eye care provider about the purchase of sunglasses and what options might be best for you.

WHAT A LIE FEELS LIKE

Let’s get right to it.

What keeps you up at night? What fear swirls into a full-blown cyclone every time you ponder it?

Fear will surely wreck your days and rob your nights, won’t it?

Have you ever noticed that just before God does something especially miraculous in Scripture, He whispers, “Do not be afraid?”

He gets us, doesn’t He? This all-knowing Father understands our panic when our ducks get knocked out of their rows. (Don’t. Mess. With. My. Ducks!)

We females seem especially prone to worry. The moment our feet hit the floor, anxiety sets in. “Did the kids finish their homework? I forgot to buy dog food! Is there enough clean laundry for everyone? Work is going to be impossible again today.” Anxiety becomes our default. If we can’t find something to worry about, we… worry!

This deep-seated anxiety finds its home in us when we believe we must solve all life’s problems – when we assume responsibility for fixing all that is broken. Whether we recognize it or not, our fears are rooted in this notion that God’s love will quit on us, or that His ability to do the impossible will collapse in our story, leaving our world entirely upon our shoulders.

My husband said recently, “Fear is what a lie feels like.” Did you get that? Fear believes; it just believes the wrong thing.

Faith looks toward God; fear focuses on the reverse route.

This backward gazing sabotages our every endeavor. It’s like trying to score a touchdown running toward your own end zone. You spend your energy scoring for the opposing team and feeling like an idiot. There is NO VICTORY in fear…

EVER! I can hear your thoughts from where I’m sitting. “Yeah, yeah, I know God loves. I know He performs miracles. I’m just not so sure I make the list.”

The truth is, you cannot wear God out! You cannot outrun His love, and you surely cannot diminish His power to do the impossible. You can only diminish your ability to believe it and watch His work unfold in your journey.

Stop reacting to the emotional shrapnel in your soul. Just because you did not get THAT job does not mean you will not get this job. Just because other marriages are crumbling does not mean yours will, too. Just because your loved one is combatting cancer does not mean you are destined to fight this evil. Just because one love left you does not mean that every love will leave you. Fear is what a lie feels like!

You say, “You don’t know what I’m facing. You don’t know how long I’ve stood here and how insurmountable this mountain seems.” You’re right. I don’t. But this I know: God hears your every prayer and believes in your success infinitely more than you do.

Fear cannot remain when your gaze gets riveted on the One who carries you. When you lock eyes with Abba, every other reality in your living is exposed as immeasurably less than the reality of Him. Stop running in the wrong direction. Stop where you are. Turn around. See Him? He sees you.

As you face these rough waters, I can’t tell you how God is going to take you to the other side. But even if He must carry you right through the eye of the storm, His love will not leave you. His Power will not abandon you in the turbulence. If He said He will do it, HE WILL! “When she arrived at the cliff in the valley, there was no room in her soul for fear, for she knew God had brought her this far and He would still be with her here.

And though she was waiting to see what miraculous thing He would do, she never let go of His highwind whispers: ‘I know the plans I have for you.’”

For the first time in Cirque du Soleil’s nearly 35-year history, the company’s first production on ice pushes the boundaries of performance by combining awe-inspiring ice skating with acrobatic feats of wonder that will defy the imagination. CRYSTAL’s international cast, representing 11 different countries, includes figure, extreme, and freestyle ice skaters, acrobats, musicians and a comic character. The cast tells the adventurous tale of a young woman, Crystal, as she dives into a world of her own imagination.

CRYSTAL invites audiences to suspend reality and glide into a world that springs to a colorful life with astounding visual projections and an original score that seamlessly blends popular music with the signature sound of Cirque du Soleil.

The music of Crystal is cinematic in scope while supporting the narrative and pulsing to the rhythm of the action on ice. With its sweeping, atmospheric, and romantic soundscapes, the score moves from grand orchestral sounds to klezmer-style chamber music to melodic folk and rock-tinged beats. Another first for the company, cover versions of well-known pop songs were specifically recorded for the show to stir the emotions of the audience and enhance key moments in the narrative. The songs were chosen not only for their ability to capture the feelings of the original, but also to heighten the emotional charge of the scenes they accompany, thus adding the “Cirque du Soleil touch” to the songs themselves.

As with all Cirque du Soleil shows, visually, CRYSTAL will wow audiences with the show’s versatile stage changes. The show will take viewers on a wild adventure from a giant pinball machine to an office tower in a big city, with many more imaginative environments in-between. Blending with the set design, the overall look of the costumes is one of frivolity laced with surrealism in a fantastical world of ice. Different types of skates are used in the show, including figure skates, ice dance, and hockey skates. The costumes and props needed for various Cirque du Soleil shows are hand-created in Montreal, in the production workshops of the International Headquarters.

The Cirque du Soleil workshop is the only one of its kind in North America.

Approximately 300 artisans are employed full-time to make the props and costumes and 16,000 or so items are created for Cirque du Soleil’s shows every year. Shoes are hand and custom-made for all performers by the artisans of the Shoe Workshop. Approximately 1,200 pairs of shoes are produced by the workshop every year. For the company’s first ice show, acrobatic shoes were developed, incorporating a combination of small metal spikes and crampons into the soles of the shoes to enable them to walk, slide, run, and so many other things that are normally not possible on ice. Because of this, they can keep their stability.

From the story to the music to the set design, families will not want to miss Cirque du Soleil’s CRYSTAL. A sensational new production combining circus arts with the world of ice skating, guests will be taken on a journey into a surreal world mixing the artistry of figure skating with the graceful athleticism of acrobatics and aerial expertise. Cirque du Soleil’s first ice show, CRYSTAL, will be in the Triad for a limited time, with seven shows at the Greensboro Coliseum from Aug. 22 through Aug. 26. Stories of Self-Discovery Self Discovery You Belong at the Table

A couple of years ago, I was asked to speak at a Women in Workforce conference. Not knowing what I should speak about, I asked the conference coordinator why he asked me to be the keynote speaker and what message he wanted me to touch on. He immediately said to talk about being fearless in the workforce. Fearless? Me???

I honestly had no idea what he was talking about. He explained that he admires how I don’t mind taking risks and to talk about how I am comfortable doing that.

I went home that day unsure of what he meant, but I had a couple of months until the conference for something to come to me. Fast forward a few weeks and I was in an Air Force Auxiliary Officers Staff Meeting. At that time I was a First Lieutenant in a meeting with Commanders and Generals. Needless to say, I was the low one on the totem pole.

The room was set up with tables forming a circle and additional chairs along the wall. When I walked into the room there was a couple of women sitting against the wall talking to each other. One was of my rank and the other was ranked higher. My instinct was to go over and sit with the only other females in the room, but that’s not what I did that day. Instead, I grabbed my stuff and plopped my behind in one of the chairs at the main table. Now, I did get some looks when people walked in as I was the only female at the table, but here is the thing, when there was a discussion, I was included.

The other women in the room sitting against the wall were not. Why was that? It was simple. I had placed myself as an equal to those at the main table. I believed I belonged there and because I believed it, I exuded confidence which made them confident in me.

Was I at times uncomfortable? Yes. Did I wonder if I deserved to be there? Yes. But the simple act of sitting at the table immediately changed the perception others had of me. Before that meeting, many didn’t know who I was, but after that meeting, I would be asked my opinion or advice on important topics.

Fast forward to the Women in Workforce conference. I talked about that day when I sat at the table. Where the simple act of believing that I belonged at the table

instead of against the wall made an impact on the opportunities I would later receive in the Air Force Auxiliary. I wasn’t comfortable taking risks like the conference coordinator said, but I wasn’t comfortable sitting against the wall either. I had to choose my path.

Sit in the back and hope I gained respect, or put myself at the table and show them why they should respect me.

For months after that talk, I would receive messages from some of the attendees about how they told themselves to sit at the table and what opportunities that afforded them. I believe that “Sit at the table” is a metaphor for what we, as women, need to do. We need to believe we deserve what we want out of life. That could relate to your job or even a personal situation.

Do me a favor… the next time you find yourself in a situation where you want something but are unsure if you should go for it, tell yourself to “sit at the table.” I promise it will make a difference.

As an aside, when my daughter was very young and we were at a family Thanksgiving dinner, she walked up to the adult table and sat down. My aunt told her that there was a kids table and that she should sit there. My daughter stood tall and told her, “I am going to sit at the big table because my mom always tells me to…”

Throughout life, people learn many lessons and skills. At a young age, we learn to walk, talk, read, and write. Most of the time, in early adulthood, we are taught how to balance a checkbook and how to do laundry properly. The list of all the tasks goes on and on, but there are a few that everyone should learn how to do as they become an adult.

1. COOKING

It doesn’t have to be a five-course meal, but learn how to cook something. Freezer meals and take out only go so far. Get proficient in a few simple, go-to meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plus, you’ll be able to impress your family and friends by cooking them one of your signature dishes. 2. BASIC HOME & CAR REPAIRS

You can save lots of money by teaching yourself how to fix the small home and car problems that occur. If you are unsure how to stop the leaky faucet in the kitchen, unclog the toilet, or how to replace a flat tire, a quick Internet search will show you. A piece of advice for all minor problems: if you think you can, try to fix it yourself before enlisting professional help. Also, if you ever get stuck, either in a pinch or out in the middle of nowhere, you’ll be able to get the job done without having to wait for help to arrive. Lastly, by having an understanding of basic home and car repairs you will have the knowledge to decide whether or not a professional is being fair in price and quality of service. For car repairs, DMV.org is a great resource.

3. BASIC FIRST-AID

It never hurts to have the ability to perform CPR, bandage a cut, and handle a burn. Always have a first-aid kit, filled with BandAids, gauze, alcohol wipes, gloves, and more at home. You never can predict when an injury or emergency will occur. Other firstaid skills you should have are recognizing the signs of a heart attack, stroke, allergic reaction, and a concussion. Check with your local Red Cross, community center, and community colleges to see if they offer classes in first-aid and CPR.

4. WRITING A RESUME & COVER LETTER

This task can be tough for many people and can be a dreaded one. However, it is a skill everyone needs to learn and is a must when looking for employment.

Many employers don’t spend a great deal of time reading resumes and cover letters. These documents need to be well-written, professional, and to the point. Think of it as being your 30-second elevator speech on paper. Community colleges and career centers in your area, as well as Goodwill, are willing to assist and answer your questions. Also, there are multiple resources online to consult.

5. ORGANIZING IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS & FINANCIAL RECORDS

Sometimes I’m guilty of throwing away receipts that might be needed later, especially during tax season. It is important to have documents, such as your birth certificate, Social Security card, and insurance information, in a safe place that you can easily reach. Also, store any receipts and tax documents in that same spot as well. You never know when you’ll need something, but this will especially come in handy during tax season. A good way to store these documents is to invest in a fireproof box.

6. TASKS WE RELY ON OUR CELL PHONES TO DO

It might be a harsh reality, but sometimes you won’t have internet access or a way to charge your cell phone’s battery. Teach yourself how to read a roadmap, in case GPS is down, learn the phone numbers of close family members, in case you can’t reach your address book, and how to compute simple math equations, without the help of a calculator. Utilizing these skills will help pull you out of difficult times, if needed.

7. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

No one wants to think that they might have to deal with a fire, flood, or tornado during their life, but sadly, some people do. Whether the power goes out or an accident strikes, it is vital to have the knowledge on what you should do and the supplies to stay safe. Part of being prepared for emergencies is having the ability to keep yourself safe. Take all precautions to avoid any unnecessary situations and how to handle the moment.

As a person goes through life, they acquire many skills and lessons that can be useful. Always keep learning something new, and you’ll be confident knowing what to do when a situation calls for a specific skill.

Where Academic Dreams Come to Life: Salem College’s Martha H. Fleer Center for Adult Education

“We want adult students to be comfortable using our resources. We offer a series of student achievement seminars, such as a series on time management and how to prep for exams,” says Betty Telford, Interim Dean of the Fleer Center at Salem College.

Students can take advantage of tutoring at the Academic Support Center which is open to all and services are free.

She is a visionary and is credited for changing many lives throughout the community.”

“He triumphs in the face of great challenges with grace and humility. I have seen how Isaac meaningfully connects with and touches those around him, and each of us is better for it.” Isaac married Dorothy, the love of his life, in June 2004. Energy Saving Tips for a Hot Carolina Summer

With summer’s official arrival to Winston-Salem on the Summer Solstice, June 21st, we are now solidly in its grip. With the sunny weather, comes hot temperatures, sure to cause any electric bill to rise.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, for homeowners, the electric bill is the highest bill during summer months. “The electric bill is a large share of a homeowner’s expenditure on housing and the most expensive utility,” the association says in the article “Average Monthly Electrical Bill by State – Updated Data.” Climate can play a significant role in consumption. For instance, the states in the Pacific Northwest had dramatically lower energy prices than those states located in the South (including our own state of North Carolina). With energy prices on the rise across North Carolina, and summer temperatures on a record high, it is not surprising that WinstonSalem homeowners would love to cut their energy bill down.

However, it is not necessary that you own a home to want to cut down on energy costs. Renters as well should be watching their energy intake and developing strategies to cut down on cost. Are these strategies difficult to employ? Do they require an expensive installation of a new energy saving product to work? This tip most notably applies to the cable systems we often use. At one time cable boxes cost Americans $3 billion per year, and $2 billion of that was when televisions were not on!

An easy way to avoid this cost is to turn off the power strip the television is attached to during the daytime. Additionally, do not forget to turn off laptops, computers, tablets, etc. If you do not want to turn these items officially off, you can use “sleep mode” and other power management features to cut down on energy costs.

ENERGY SAVING TIP #3: KEEP COOL WITH BLINDS.

While it is vital to keep your home cool in the summer, as no one wants to sweat in their own homes, by simply keeping blinds closed, you can easily slash energy costs. When heading out to work, simply lower the blinds and open them back up upon returning. You will not only enjoy a lower energy bill, but also a cooler home during the night hours.

ENERGY SAVING TIP #4: LOWER OR TURN OFF AC WHEN OUT OF TOWN.

When heading out of town for a weekend/week, you can easily lower bills by simply turning off AC. If you are hesitant to do this, try simply raising the temperature. You are sure to be pleased with the lower bill at the end of the month.

ENERGY SAVING TIP #5: LIGHT UP YOUR CORNERS.

Here is a surprising fact, by placing a lamp or similar light fixture in a corner with a lower-wattage bulb, your home will enjoy the same illumination as if a lamp was in the middle of a room with a more powerful bulb. This is simply because light reflects off the adjoining walls to brighten the room.

ENERGY SAVING TIP #6: TRY MOTION SENSORS TO AVOID HIGH ELECTRIC COSTS.

While you are more than likely very astute at turning off lights when you leave a room, are your kids? Probably they are a work in progress. Easily handle this dilemma through buying a few motion sensors programmed to turn off lights when everyone leaves a room. Problem solved.

Whenever I’m invited to visit The Crosby Pub, it’s always an event. My husband is the first to raise his hand to go with me, and our other guests always have the same reaction – there’s a restaurant at The Village Inn?? YES! And my friends, I’ve written it before, but Crosby Pub is THE best-kept secret in Clemmons. But I care way too much about our readers to let it stay a secret! The Crosby Pub is a superb dining experience everyone in the family will love!

From the fun, casual atmosphere to the fully stocked bar to the carefully planned menu – hospitality is the name of the game. The bar manager, David Saltiel, and his team excel at making their guests feel welcome. They are attentive on the front end, while Chef Araceli Cabrera and the kitchen crew are busy attending to the exact details of every plate they prepare.

When we arrived for this review, the first thing David asked us to do was sample some new cocktails from the bar. These beautiful drinks were artistically prepared with high-quality ingredients and unique flavor combinations. First, we tried the MARTINI SUNRISE. This drink, made from peach vodka, pineapple vodka, pineapple juice, and orange juice is just begging to be sipped on the beach. Seriously, the only thing missing is some warm sand between your toes. Fruity and delicious!

Another drink with the tropics in mind was the BLUE LAGOON. This drink is just about humming with the sound of ocean waves with a blend of Malibu rum, pineapple vodka, pineapple juice, blue curacao, and sour mix.

I love the combination of blueberries and lemons, so the BLUEBERRY MOJITO was not only delicious but oh-so-pretty, too! Almost too pretty to drink, in my opinion! But we persevered… Bacardi rum, fresh lemon, soda, fresh mint, and fresh blueberries come together for a refreshing summer cocktail!

Finally, we sampled the MELON COOLER MARTINI. This was a light and refreshing twist on a martini, made with Midori, vodka, and lemonade. Excellent.

We sampled a variety of entrees, including the classic SHRIMP AND GRITS. Who doesn’t love shrimp and grits, right? The Crosby Pub’s version of this southern staple is made with fresh shrimp, cheddar cheese, and mushrooms. It’s served with two grit cakes that are made with cheese, beer, garlic, panko, and seasonings.

The whole entrée is hearty and filling.

We also enjoyed a GRILLED RIBEYE WITH VEGGIES! If you read regularly, you know I love a good steak. And not only does the team at Crosby Pub know how to grill a steak, it’s affordably priced! A great meal for any steak lover! And their veggies! I love the way they grill them – flavorful, tender, but still firm. They are the perfect accompaniment to a perfectly grilled ribeye!

When the WINGS arrived, our table could not get over the platter we were served. I have never seen wings as big as the ones at the Crosby Pub. Plus, the sauces are all house-made. During our visit, we sampled the barbecue wings, and they were, to use a cliché, finger-licking good. Absolutely amazing. Paired with traditional celery sticks and house-made ranch dressing – this is an appetizer to be shared or an entrée on its own!

If a sandwich is more your thing, you may be tempted to order a CLUB SANDWICH and think you can handle it. If you order it, just plan to ask for a to-go box, too.

That sandwich is HUGE! Layers upon layers of turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, and cheese – this is a deluxe-sized club!!! Bonus! It was served with FRIED ONION RINGS! Onion rings can be so heavy and greasy, and honestly, I have no idea how Crosby Pub manages to fry these without them turning out greasy, but they are anything but. The batter is so good, and the fried taste does not overwhelm the flavor of the onions.

The Crosby Pub is a hidden gem in the community and being a locally-owned restaurant within a locally-owned hotel and run by some of the nicest people you could ever meet – it’s a place you will want to support and add to your list of go-to restaurants. Plus, they have nightly specials (check out the side bar for the full list!)!

I consider it a good thing that I have not been the spouse in my family that has to go out and do the weekly shopping for groceries and necessities while my kids have been growing up. My wife usually takes care of those chores during the day, and thus it insulates me from actually seeing firsthand how expensive things have gotten recently. Case in point, I went to a local eatery last night for a quick salad and a soft drink. It had been a long day; my wife had a friend in from out of town and it gave me an opportunity to eat out and do some quick reading with no distractions. I ordered the salad with a medium drink and the total bill was right under $10.00. I may not have indicated this was a fast food restaurant, not a sitdown place with a waiter or waitress.

It took me a second to digest the price but I handed over a $20 bill and got some change back. As I was finishing up, my wife texted me and said she had placed a call-in order at the same place I was eating to make it easy for me. I did not see the bill as it was paid for by her on her phone. When I got home, my wife and her friend remarked about how small the cup of fruit they ordered was and how it cost almost $5.00. The entre, just a short time ago, only cost $5.00. Now the side of fruit does. My wife and her friend were dumbfounded and they both do the shopping for their families.

I look at inflation from my work perspective as a good thing.

Traditionally, prices rise (inflation) during good economic growth times.

Good economic times tend to lead to wage increases or raises for workers.

Rising wages for consumers, coupled with the rising cost of production, can mean higher prices at the store.

Maybe if wages are rising because the economy is so strong, that will help cover the higher prices. Maybe it will not. For the average family, simply keeping up with monthly bills and family needs takes most, if not all, the income. I see issues in the future if

inflation continues to run at the pace it is running now. At some point, consumers will either run out of money, max out their credit cards, or both.

The long-term effects of that scenario, played out over tens of thousands of people, is a recession.

For those families who have an unemployed parent or child, or maybe a high school graduate looking for options instead of immediately going to a 2-year or 4-year college, check out the article from the Washington Post, written by Heather Long that I read recently. The title of the article is “America doesn’t have enough truckers, and it is starting to cause prices of about everything to rise.”

Maybe the article will spark some interest in what jobs are actually in demand right now. Maybe everyone does not need to load up on student loan debt and get that 4-year college degree. More truckers would mean more volume shipped and more volume shipped would bring the cost to transport down. More electricians and plumbers and skilled trade workers would mean more houses being built.

More supply of new houses would help contain costs. We desperately need more people who earn their living working with their hands. The younger generation does not get it like the previous generations did. A good skill can pay the bills and give you a great quality of life. A good skill can lead to employment opportunities that present themselves quicker with greater pay. It can help the overall economy to fill a massive shortage of “in demand” opportunities. Who knows, it may even bring down the price of my chicken salad.

Finding a Job at Any Age

It’s a common task that almost everyone has to conquer at some point in their life: the task of finding a job. The reality of hunting for a job, going through numerous searches, and updating your resume and cover letters can be daunting. Then, add in your experience level, and unfortunately, your age, and things might get tricky. Some like to say that finding a job is a full-time job in itself.

If you are in the market for a new job, here are some tips to help ease your stress and make your search a little easier, no matter your age.

IN YOUR TWENTIES:

You are fresh out of school and ready to take on the world with a new career. But you might come across a few problems, such as your age and experience level. To overcome this, start with polishing up your resume. You may not have much job experience at this stage in your life. To help fill your resume, list any jobs, internships, volunteer positions, honors, skills, and coursework. Be sure to tailor your resume to each position you are applying for and make it relevant to what qualifications the job requires. That way you are highlighting what you could bring to the job. Also, always

proofread and correct any typos. Employers usually discard any resumes or cover letters with grammar and spelling mistakes. Lastly, continue learning new skills. The more abilities you have, the more hirable you’ll become.

Part of finding a job is getting your foot in the door and networking, especially for the job searchers in their twenties. Bring your resume to various career and networking events held by your college or university, or in your community. Starting to build those professional relationships at the beginning of your hunt will help you secure a position when the time is right.

IN YOUR THIRTIES AND FORTIES:

At this point in a person’s life, there are many reasons why someone would be looking for a new job. The first step in your job search in your thirties and forties is determining your strengths and in what career they would be beneficial. Think about what interests you, and what type of career would make you happy.

Then, find professionals in that field and network. If you can, complete an internship or “job shadow” a leader in that position to get exposure to the company and job. Another option is to volunteer with a nonprofit in that career field. This opportunity allows you to network with employers, and vice versa, so they will get to know you, which can be helpful when a position in that organization or field opens up. An advantage of exploring a career field while applying for jobs gives you a chance to see if you need to further your education or get qualified for a certain occupation. There are many options available for continuing your studies while working, such as online classes offered through colleges and universities. One downfall to this part of the job search is the time an internship, networking, and job shadowing takes. Be sure to attend different events in your community where you’ll have the chance to network. Also, think about your family and friends. Do they have a professional connection that would help you? It never hurts to ask.

IN YOUR FIFTIES AND SIXTIES:

It is a harsh reality that finding a job later in life can be tough and age discrimination does occur in the job search. Some employers view people in their fifties and sixties as being too expensive or not wanting to work or stay for long in an entry-level position. However, this is not true. People in this life stage can offer professionalism and usually have a strong work ethic earned through their maturity. A person 50 or older will automatically have more experience and knowledge, perhaps in a variety of fields. During a job search, this is a quality to highlight on your resume and in your cover letters. Emphasize your accomplishments and where you have been a leader in various occupations. However, you do need to explain in your cover letter any gaps in employment, or why you are applying for a job for which it may seem you are overqualified. Leave off years from your education and shorten your resume to focus on jobs held within the last ten years. Along with your abilities already acquired, show off your skills and interests in current news and events, and how to navigate technology. Try to stop thinking about your age as a burden in the job search, but instead, as an advantage you can bring to the job.

No matter what your age is, all of these tips can be useful in a job search. Be confident in your abilities, skills, and experience, and before you know it, you’ll find the perfect profession for you.

Downtown is brimming with restaurants and attracting new residents. Business 40 will become a safe and swift expressway, adorned with creative corridors.

Against the backdrop of an increasing need for human services — driven by income inequality, lagging student achievement, an aging population, and the challenge of the opioid epidemic — Family Services is working with the community to expand the programs and services that are helping children and families reach their full potential.

How to Style Your Coffee Table in

10 Easy Steps

I understand styling your coffee table can be a challenge. I’ve been there, and also have spent way too long before I admit trying to get the “perfect” look for my coffee table. Recently, I spent some time researching tips on how to style your coffee table. Your living room is usually at the center of the house, where all your family and guests hang out, so it’s important for it to be both stylish and practical. This can be tricky, but it’s very doable! Questions I commonly ask myself: “Is that too much?”

“Is there enough on the table?” “Too many colors?” and “Is this too bland?” You will not need to ask yourself these questions if you follow the tips below!

1. Maintain Balance. Vary the scale of items on your coffee

separate sections. This can help you decide where things look best—especially for a longer, rectangular shaped table.

7. Add Something Green. Coffee tables are a perfect place for a lower maintenance plant. Add it to the center of your table to bring freshness and life into your living room. Succulents, orchids, and moss are all great options.

“Big brokerage firms traditionally do it differently than independent financial advisory practices,” said Jon. “We see it all the time. If a big firm advisor who has built a good size practice leaves, his or her clients are divvied up among other advisors in the office. Again, finances are not sold off, but the client has lost the relationship, understanding, and personal interest in their unique needs. They have to start over again with a new advisor. And then, when that advisor leaves, they have to start again.”

But trying to find talent is not always an easy task.

“When we tap into local talent, the options are really fairly limited,” Jon explained. “The average age of financial advisors is early-mid 50s. Ten years ago, when we were in a recession, many younger people hesitated to enter our industry. There was a mistrust in capital markets.

You never know when a certain experience is going to inspire you to your calling in life. Chelsea Taylor, a Winston-Salem, NC native, owner and massage therapist at Moonstone Massage, decided on a career as a massage therapist after having a massage herself. “After a bad day when I was working at the bank, I used a gift card for a massage. I thought how happy I was to see the massage therapist, even though I knew nothing about her. I realized I wanted to be like her – making people feel good and working in a job where people were happy to see me,” recalled Chelsea. After attending The Living Arts Institute and specializing in massage therapy, Chelsea, at the young age of 23, opened Moonstone Massage, in 2013, enjoying every day since by helping clients feel better, mentally and physically.

Chelsea knew clients had many choices for massage therapy in the WinstonSalem area, so she set out to make the client’s experience different from what they may have had in the past. “When I started my business, I saw something was lacking. Many places have therapists on

such a tight schedule that clients become numbers. At Moonstone Massage, our therapists treat clients the way they would want to be treated. Five Key Questions to Ask

Volunteering may be something you enjoy – giving of time, talents, and providing needed assistance. It is an important part of many lives and does much for a community. Perhaps you have been approached to step up from those volunteer activities and have been asked to serve on an agency’s Board of Directors. What does that mean? What kind of responsibility does that entail? Good questions all. There are five key questions that you may want to address before agreeing to serve on a non-profit Board.

WHAT IS A BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

By definition, a nonprofit Board of Directors is the “governing body of a non-profit comprised of individuals who sit on the board and are responsible for overseeing the activities of the organization. Members meet and vote on the affairs of the organization.”

According to the Midwest Center for Non-Profit Leadership, a board member has three fiduciary duties – care, loyalty, and obedience.

Basically, a board member should be actively engaged and involved in the agency, work toward the interests of the agency, and possess a knowledge of the state/federal governing laws to work within those guidelines.

WHAT ARE SOME KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE AGREEING TO SERVE ON A NON-PROFIT BOARD?

• What is the strategic plan or direction for the organization? Is the plan reviewed on a regular basis? Documenting the short and longterm plans is important to the agency. Having a perspective on the direction impacts the agency, the community, and ultimately, your role in helping to achieve those goals.

• Are the responsibilities of the board members defined? Do members have unique expertise that they bring to the board, perhaps from their

corporate/work environment or skillset? What are the expectations for a board member? How many years do board members serve?ˆ • Is there an information packet available for prospective board members? Reviewing information on the agency, the board, and expectations is an important step in deciding to serve. Personal research is an option; however, having information on hand may expedite a decision.

• What are the fundraising requirements for a board member?

Fundraising is an important component for most non-profit organizations. Assessing your personal comfort level in asking for donations may be necessary. In many cases, board members are expected to participate actively in fundraising endeavors, which may include cold calls, adding personal notes to mailings, working on a fundraising event, or perhaps speaking to a group of potential contributors.

• What is the time commitment? How many times does the board meet? Ideally, most boards meet monthly. Are the meetings during normal work hours? If so, how will that impact your work and work/life balance? Depending on personal circumstances, the time factor may be a critical decision-making component.

Take time to think through what may be required of you to serve as a board member. Yes, it is an important role. Be sure it’s a role you would enjoy and that would be fulfilling to you as well as the agency.

Community involvement has a far-reaching impact on the current and future generations. Help is needed in many avenues with many different skill sets needed. Working to improve our communities takes all of us working together toward common goals. If asked to serve, do your research before making a decision. Stepping up and stepping out to help our community keeps it growing!

The entrance to one’s home makes a statement about the people who live there. You may have a ‘welcome’ mat by your front door, but is it enough to make your guests feel they are welcome?

SUMMER TIME, SLIM TIME

Good ol’ summertime is finally in full force! It is great to be outside in the early morning or at dusk to enjoy a walk with friends or family when the temperature is more comfortable. Summer is a great time to make small changes in your lifestyle to improve your health and your family’s health. Many of us spend most of the day at a desk, whether at school or at work, and it is easy to come home, complete our chores and then just sit some more. Make a small change by finding a healthy slow cooker recipe to prepare dinner, then spend the spare time taking a predinner walk with the family around the neighborhood. Instead of going to the gym by yourself on Saturday mornings, find a local hiking trail and get outside with the family or a group of friends. If you have younger children, bring a list of things to find on the hike (an acorn, a squirrel, a caterpillar, etc.) Who doesn’t like a treasure hunt?

Many people choose to take a bite or two of some favorite high fat or high sugar food that is packed with calories in even just a little amount. One lollipop, one potato chip with cream cheese based dip, and one spoonful of ice cream easily can amount to 50 calories each. One cocktail meatball, one spoonful of icing, and one cube of high-fat cheese can amount to 100 calories each. One small fried chicken wing, one teaspoon of cookie dough, and a spoonful of tartar sauce, pesto or Hollandaise sauce can easily add up to 200 calories each! Try to be conscious of when and what you may nibble on. Try to avoid nibbling on high-calorie treats. Those fewer bites a day can make a difference in losing a few more pounds.

Try to make an effort to stop skipping meals. One of the most important meals skipped is breakfast. Research shows breakfast helps boost metabolism, improve your food selections throughout the day, and improve mental performance. Studies show an association between weight control, slimmer bodies, and breakfast. Research also shows that those who consume breakfast tend to consume less fat, and more vitamins and minerals than those who skip the meal. Stock your kitchen with convenient, ready-to-eat foods. For example, you can have fresh fruits, pre-washed salad greens, non-fat yogurt, milk, and cereals around.

Try waking up a little earlier if you need to make time for breakfast, and pack lunch the night before. On days when you’re not busy, you can prepare dinner items that you can pre-portion and freeze for several vmeals.

Find a replacement for those pasta cravings. Pasta is filled with carbohydrates, and though they’re fine once in a while, the weekly pasta meal can add pounds to your body quickly. Instead, try making spaghetti squash or swap out traditional wheat pasta with quinoa pasta. I bet no one would even be able to tell the difference. A vegetable spiralizer is a great tool for making “spaghetti” from vegetables. This substitution is a great way to reduce calories and starch but still allows us to have a “spaghetti dinner”!

Many people skip regular meals and just graze all day. While consuming smaller, more frequent meals can help boost metabolism, nibbling on high-calorie foods with little nutrients all day long can lead to weight gain. It is still important to consume balanced, nutritious meals or snacks throughout the day if you want to rev up your metabolism and lose weight. Grazing can result in consuming too much fat and calories, yet not enough nutrients. Less all-day munching and more regular meals can help you fuel up properly to lose weight. Many people think a little nibble here, and a little nibble there can’t do much damage. This

Summer can be a very busy season and leave us lacking in rest because we have more daylight hours for outdoor activities. Sleep has an impact on weight control. A great change to make this summer is to set a goal to get about 8 hours of sleep each night. Not only will you have low energy levels from little sleep, but research also shows that people tend to compensate for lack of energy with food. It is easy to lose track of time when the days are longer, so try to leave time at the end of your day for relaxing and unwinding prior to getting a good night’s rest.

Think of summer as a time to enjoy nutritious meals with fresh fruits and vegetables from your garden or the farmers market, exercising outdoors while spending time with family and friends, and pleasant dreams of vacations to come! Summertime is slim down time with these simple, healthy choices for meals, snacks and social time.

Honoring Our Local Military

As we celebrate our nation’s independence, let’s also give honor to those local men and women who are actively serving our nation all over the world. According to data from governing.com as of September 2017, North Carolina had one of the highest number of active and reserve military personnel. As of that date, 112,951 were serving in the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Navy, or the Coast Guard; 91,175 were classified as active, with 21,776 in the reserves.

Meet two of our local military currently on duty who represent a vast number of others from our state. Each person is each special and we are grateful for their willingness to stand and protect our rights and freedoms.

Austin Carl McMullen, son of Maria and Wayne McMullen, joined the U.S. Army in March of 2017. He completed his basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma and is now a Private First Class (PFC).

Austin’s Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is intelligence analyst. “Austin graduated from Reynolds High School and was in their ROTC program. He wanted to join the military all through his high school years,” Maria shared.

“Our family has a history of service, one of my brothers was a Marine, five other brothers were in the Army, and my Dad was also in the Army. We are so proud that he wanted to follow our family tradition in serving our nation.” Maria and Wayne attended Austin’s graduation at Ft. Sill. After graduation, Austin was transferred to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona for Advanced Individual Training (AIT) training. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas prior to his deployment overseas. “As a Mom, of course, I worry; however, we know that God will protect him and all the others service men and women.”

Maria shared that she enjoys spending time putting together special packages from home filled with goodies and practical things that he needs and that remind him of home. Sharing a taste

of home with his buddies is common so she packs each ‘care package’ with that in mind. “Supporting our loved one is so important when they make the decision to join the military.

Letting them know how proud you are of them, that you are praying for them, and that you support their decision is critical.”

Taylor Ray Idol, son of Kristi and James Idol, joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 2016. He currently holds the rank of Lance Corporal. Taylor completed book camp at Parris Island, South Carolina and then transferred to Camp Lejeune. His MOS is in the infantry as a rifleman and he served as a scout with the Second LAR. Taylor completed his first deployment in September 2017 and is currently back at Camp Lejeune. Before his return to the US, he had the opportunity to participate in a desert survival school in Africa. Taylor graduated from West Forsyth High School where he played baseball and was all-conference and all-state. He attended WSSU on a baseball scholarship for two years prior to enlisting. “Taylor always wanted to be a Marine,” James shared. Taylor is following his family’s tradition of military service; his dad was a Marine in Desert Storm and Operation Restore Hope, his grandfather was in the Army and served in Vietnam. “Taylor always had a servant’s heart. He joined just because he wanted to serve his country,” explained his parents. “He does not talk much about his military service and doesn’t look for fanfare, he just wants to be of service to his country. We know that God will be with him through whatever comes across his path.”

5 Things You Might Be Doing That Prevent Sales This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

As a business owner, gaining customers and making sales is a pretty big deal. So, naturally you wouldn’t want to do anything to sabotage that!

The truth is, so many business owners have every good intention, and yet somehow fail to see that some of their common practices in their shop are exactly what’s preventing their own sales.

Here are 5 simple things you can avoid that may be preventing sales.

#1 - BEING DISTRACTED

When a customer enters your shop, what are you doing as the seller? Are you on your phone, checking Facebook? Maybe you opened a little later than expected and you’re sorting through price tags and putting out product? Well, I hate to say it, but the two women who walked in to find gifts left before you even said hello.

Remember, you don’t have to be a social butterfly, but a simple “hello” and “how are you” can go a long way to make someone feel welcome. On busy sales days try to take a moment and acknowledge people to let them know you will get to them shortly and encourage them to look around.

Doing this does two things. First, it shows them you care, makes them feel welcome and reminds them that you want them there. Second, it lets them know that you see them. As in, literally see them. It’s sad but true – small businesses aren’t an exception to shoplifters.

#2 - NOT ENOUGH INVENTORY

Your shop looks great and your product is on point, but things are looking a little barren.

A lot of store owners forget that even if you have a plan on how your product will be merchandised, you must think about the empty spaces that will occur as things get sold. (That’s the goal, remember? You want product flying off the shelves!)

Having extra inventory on hand is important for when you sell out of bestselling items or get customers who are hoping to purchase multiples.

Of course, be sure to have that surplus of inventory hiding out of site ready to refill as items are being sold throughout the week. If you start running out of inventory and notice an empty shelves or racks, just move things around. This is a great strategy as it makes your space look a little fresh and new each time customers stop by.

#3 - TOO MUCH INVENTORY

Wait- didn’t I just tell you that having not enough inventory is the problem? Yes! But, having too much inventory can kill your sales, too!

Just picture that family member who has a million figurines, frames and who knows what else in their living room, so that you can barely find place to sit or set your coffee mug down? The same idea can be used here. When your shop has a surplus of inventory taking up space, it can be distracting for the customer and can take away from your product’s appearance and worth.

Think of a high-end boutique and what sets it apart from other stores. When you walk in, you can see all the product, but it’s merchandised to show negative space between items, and product is arranged to create interest and feel inviting.

Another issue with overcrowding is that you run the chance of having customers knock something over or cause damage. I suggest approaching different areas of your shop and reviewing displays to help you decide if something needs to be shifted to make for a cleaner appearance or easier reach.

#4 - PRICING ISN’T CLEAR OR CONSISTENT

Your shop is merchandised beautifully with your products visible for the world to see, but what happens when someone comes in and looks at an item that they are interested in? Typically, they’ll look for the price tag or signage to tell them the cost.

So, what happens when they can’t find one?

Sometimes you get lucky and customers will ask the price. Other times, you get someone who will simply put it back and walk away. People may make assumptions when they don’t see a price listed, especially if you’re selling specialty items like handmade goods or artwork. They may think it’s going to be out of their price range or that they must make an offer, both of which can turn them away. You want to make sure that customers can clearly identify how much your products cost, so be consistent keep the prices easily visible for shoppers.

#5 - NOBODY CAN TELL WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU’RE SELLING

Being a Jack of All Trades is a compliment, but when it comes to your brand it’s important to know what you want to be known for. When someone walks into your store, can they tell what kind of business you are within the first five seconds? Or are you a little all over the place, selling a mix of products that don’t fall under a common category or theme? An example of this would be a shop selling dog leashes and accessories, but which also has exotic handmade soaps for sale. Do you see the disconnect?

When you’re setting up shop and planning out your product, spend some time thinking about what message you want customers to take away.

Who are you trying to invite in to shop? How you set up and the kinds of things you sell will prove to be an invitation to passersby or a “keep walking” sign. You want to be sure your ideal client is seeing it as an invitation! Don’t try to be all things to all people. Be who you are most excited to be known for.

Shaved Ice, Sorbet & Ice Cream

From the days of emperors and royalty, patriots and citizens, scrapings of ice and creamed ice were cool and refreshing delights.

Today, ice cream parlors and creameries, festivals and gatherings feature a variety of flavors to encourage patrons to delight in the refreshing taste of this historical pastime: eating ice cream and sherbets, sorbets and shaved ice.

We as a people can also celebrate “National Ice Cream Month,” a July resolution signed into public law since 1984 by President Ronald Reagan.

While many businesses will be offering new flavors and great specials, July is the perfect month to gather the family and make your own!

HISTORY OF SHAVED ICE:

The language was discovered documented on a scroll, dating back to the fourth century. Roman emperor, Nero, requested large blocks of ice to be harvested from the mountains, shaved, and topped with fruit mixed with a form of milk.

Shaved Ice with Berries and Yogurt Recipe:

Ingredients: 3/4 cup yogurt, one packet of Splenda, one handful of berries, seven ice cubes Directions: Pour yogurt into a bowl and stir in one packet of Splenda. Carefully fold into the yogurt the handful of berries. With a food processor, place the ice on “pulse” for 30 to 40 seconds until the cubes are flaky. Once again, fold the shaved ice into the mixture of yogurt and berries.

HISTORY OF SORBET:

Sorbet has a wide-ranging documented history, spanning the Arab, Chinese and Egyptian cultures. One story tells of a Pharaoh who offered visitors a cup of ice mixed with the juices of the fruit. It is believed Marco Polo brought the basic principles of sorbet back to Italy. It became a simple, refreshing beverage to cleanse the palate between courses. As Italians made their way to America, sorbet arrived on the streets of New York by the late 1700s.

Fruit Sorbet Recipe: When you have a wide range of fresh summer fruit, strawberry and peach sorbet, or raspberry rose sorbet, is a wonderful solution. It requires just a little creative combination and a basic recipe to follow.

Directions: Slice two pounds of fresh fruit.

To make a simple syrup, combine one cup of water with one cup of sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat for five minutes. You should have a half cup; allow to cool. Place fruit in a container and pour syrup overtop. Blend until liquefied.

Strain, but do not force any solids through the strainer; then, stir the bowl. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice. (Take a quick taste to see if the flavoring is bland or too sweet.) Refrigerate for one hour. Pour into an ice cream machine for 10 to 15 minutes.

Freeze for four hours until the sorbet has hardened. Kept in the freezer, sorbet can keep about a month in the freezer.

HISTORY OF ICE CREAM:

Second to Emperor Nero is King Tang of Shang, China of the 6th century, who established a method to combine ice and milk concoctions. Then it was a Sicilian, working at the Cafe Procopio, who introduced an ice cream recipe to the public around the1660s, which comprised milk, cream, butter, and eggs. When the first American ice cream parlor opened its doors in New York in 1790, George Washington himself, had a bill across one summer totaling $200.

Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe:

Ingredients: 2 cups heavy whipping cream, 2 cups half-and-half cream, ¾ cup white sugar, one tbs. vanilla extract Directions: In a large bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream and the half and half. Gradually, add in the sugar, whisk until blended. Add the vanilla. Refrigerate for at least three hours, or until cold. Whisk the mixture to blend, then into an ice cream maker. Transfer to a covered container and freeze up to 8 hours.

TRAVEL BALL - THE PRICE WE ARE REALLY PAYING It’s been many years, decades would be the more truthful fact, since I played high school baseball. I have so many fond memories of my senior year when we won 21 straight games and came within an out of winning the state championship.

There is also a vivid memory of our second day of practice.

This not only happened my senior year of high school but every year I played baseball. The issue I, and everyone else on the team had, was a sore arm. This was due to the fact that the majority of us had not thrown a baseball since we hung up our cleats in July of the previous season. That’s right, we were all on a top-notch high school baseball team, and not a single one of us had played baseball for nearly eight months. The majority of athletes played multiple sports, and many were three-sport players. By now you are probably wondering what this has to do with our health. To be as uncompromisingly forthright as I can, to me it’s sickening the physical abuse we are putting our young kids through with the amount of baseball they are playing. In Forsyth County alone two promising high school pitchers have had Tommy John surgery in hopes of continuing their baseball careers. By no means am I pointing a finger at the high school coaches – by the time they get to high school, the recipe for disaster has been ongoing for some time. This falls on the parents and the parents alone. There are competitive baseball tournaments being played in March and ending in November. During this eight-month stretch parents are allowing their kids to play on Little League, travel teams, and school teams. By season’s end, some kids are playing 60-80 games. This is happening before many kids reach the age of 10!

John Smoltz, former Atlanta Braves pitcher, spent the last portion of his Hall of Fame acceptance speech talking about this issue. The following is summarized from his speech.

Summer fun as he knew it is just about extinct. Travel leagues have come to dominate the summer of even grade-schoolers.

Kids as young as seven are herded into travel tournaments for entire weekends. The clear carrot hanging from the travel league stick is the promise of a college scholarship.

But few kids are good enough to play at the college level. And those who are end up at schools where a meaningful degree is secondary consideration. The nuttiest part of it is how it drains not just the fun out of play, but the life out of arms. Physical injury is occurring. Smoltz finished his

speech by saying, “I want to encourage you, if nothing else, to know that your children’s passion to play baseball is something they can do without a competitive pitch. Every throw a kid makes today is a competitive pitch. They don’t just go outside and have fun. They’re out there competing and maxing out too hard, too early, and that’s why we’re having these problems.

Please take care of those great future arms.” (At this point, everyone in the Cooperstown crowd stood and applauded) Let me point out that up until now it may seem I am taking dead aim at the sport of baseball. I am not! Just about every sport that kids play today have some form of travel teams that extend far beyond the three to four month intended season.

The hook being cast by all these organizations is, if you want to be seen by college coaches, you’ve got to be on a travel team. Now that our society has taken the bait, the money will continue to flow in and the seasons will get longer and longer.

In conclusion here’s a couple of things to ponder as you write your checks to these organizations. Only a very small amount of college athletes are awarded full scholarships. Most of these come from Division 1 schools in football and basketball. Out of the 32 first round draft picks in this year’s NFL draft, 30 played multiple sports in high school. In other words, your rare star athlete is one of God-given talent that has made it to the top of his sport by being an overall athlete, not by a year-round practice of competitive pitches, swings or kicks. This is not only true in football. Two of the best baseball players in the major leagues, Aaron Judge, 3-star athlete in high school, and Clayton Kershaw, a center on his high school football team, are all-stars without the help of travel ball.

It would be interesting to me to know the amount of money paid out by families for travel ball expenses over the number of years their child is involved. That’s every fee, meal, hotel room, gas, plane ticket, tournament ticket, apparel, and any other expense paid out. I would imagine it is close to the college money being awarded to the few that receive scholarships.

There is also the lesser amount of precious family time we have with our children growing up. When there are more kids on the soccer and baseball fields on Mother’s Day, than there are at church and grandma’s eating lunch, it is a sad day in our society. Is this really where we are today?

WHAT MAKES PROVIDENCE RESTAURANT & CATERING UNIQUE?

On May 6th, Providence Restaurant and Catering hosted their second annual Fresh Starts & Full Plates Gala. This was a cocktail party of epic proportions to support a cause of unquestionable value.

Held in the non-profit’s restaurant itself, the festivities commenced at 6 PM with a silent auction, gift card gamble, and Champagne game. Wait staff – all Providence Culinary Training alum or current students – traveled among the guests offering scrumptious appetizers, while guests also had the option to sample various entrees at stations throughout the party.

The Wally West Little Big Band kept guests entertained before Master of Ceremonies Cameron Kent got the main event going. It was a magical evening of great food, great music, and community support for a great cause!

Thanks to the generous support of both sponsors and guests, the Fresh Starts & Full Plates Gala raised funds to support Second Harvest Food Bank’s Providence Restaurant & Catering, Providence Culinary Training, and other projects designed to feed local families! This financial support helps Providence run their innovative culinary training program, which provides kitchen skills and internships to help local folks move into family-supporting wage work in the culinary field.

“Providence Restaurant is opening doors for those who thought they had run out of options,” said Chef Jeff Bacon, the founder and leader of the Providence programs to event guests. “The program emphasizes the importance of skills, confidence, and ongoing personal and professional development.”

This annual event allows Providence Culinary Training studentsturned-apprentices the opportunity to show off their culinary chops (pun intended!). The gala’s menu included extraordinary dishes such as Soy Mirin Compressed Watermelon; Israeli Salad; Crispy Pork Belly; Braised Asian Greens; Aberdeen Angus Strip Loin; Joyce Farms Chicken and Dumplings; Gold Rice Crusted Carolina Classics Catfish; Seared Sea Scallops; DJ’s Peach Cheesecake with Bourbon Peaches; Chocolate Macadamia Tart with Salted Caramel; and Sweet Potato Grand Marnier Cake. Each ingredient and each recipe reflected Second Harvest and Providence’s dedication to local farmers and local economies, making sure each bite reflected community values… and, to be sure, no one left hungry!

How to Keep a

PrayerJournal

In the movie The Help, one of the main characters, Aibileen, discusses writing down her prayers at one part in the film. It’s a good bet that Aibileen is talking about a prayer journal. This unique type of journal is a way many people communicate their prayers to God. It is a treasured notebook that allows people to reflect on what is on their hearts.

To keep a prayer journal, you don’t need to be a writer, you don’t need to write a page or more, and you don’t need a large amount of time to channel your thoughts.

Keeping a prayer journal and writing down your prayers can be as simple as five words and five minutes per day. It can, however, be challenging to get started. But by following the tips below, it will be as easy as riding a bike.

Use one journal and one journal only. It can be tempting to have multiple journals.

Maybe you have one for only prayers and another for writing down your daily thoughts. A quick tip is combining the two into one. A prayer journal doesn’t have to be a specific notebook, just for prayers.

It can include your daily reflections, life happenings, and prayers. This is a timesaver,

as well. You aren’t switching between books and stopping and starting. Everything is in one place and there is easy access for you to spend more time in thought and prayer.

Journal everything. Many times prayers are questions we ask God. Yet, some prayers can be thoughts, praises, and more.

Channel your thanks, questions, dreams, and answered prayers. One of the things that makes journaling special is being able to look back and see what has happened in your life and how God has influenced it.

Choose a time that works for you. It might be writing first thing in the morning or last thing before bed. You don’t have to spend an hour, penning a book. Five minutes works for some people and an hour works for others. This habit should be comfortable and not stressful. It is meant to be a relaxing, no pressure way to unwind. The amount of time you spend writing might change day to day, and that is okay. Also, think about how many times per day, week, month you want to journal your thoughts and prayers. Keeping a prayer journal shouldn’t be a burden; it should be a joy. Create a plan that works for you and stick with it, but be flexible for changing your schedule when needed.

Find a place that is sacred to you. This spot may be inside or out, but it should be an enjoyable and cozy place that allows you to get in the mindset for time in prayer and journaling. Try to avoid distractions while in this area.

Always start your time in prayer. God will lead your thoughts and prayers during your reflection. Ask Him for the peace to explain what is on your heart and mind. There is no right or wrong answer for what you should and shouldn’t write. Grammar and spelling can be thrown out the window. Don’t be afraid to be honest and give it all to God. Just remember to be specific with what you are praising, asking for, etc.

Relate your thoughts to scripture. When you are writing, it is helpful to have access to a Bible. This gives you a chance to refer back to and add in scripture to your prayers, if needed. Also, you are able to read as you write.

Writing in a prayer journal can be a special habit to develop. It is a moment to channel what is going on in your world and ask God for guidance. It is a simple task that can make a big difference in your life.

Neuropathy is a complicated health condition that has many different symptoms and causes. There are also five different categories of neuropathy, and each type depends on which nerves become compressed, defective, or damaged.

Here is a brief introduction to each and how they affect the body: 1. Peripheral neuropathy: This is the most common type of neuropathy and results from damage to the peripheral nervous system. Patients with this type of neuropathy may experience discomfort in one or more of the following areas: toes, feet, legs, fingers, hands, and arms.

2. Proximal neuropathy: The second most common type of neuropathy, proximal neuropathy encompasses nerve damage to the hips, thighs, or gluteal areas of the body. While it usually only impacts one side of the body, it can spread to both sides.

3. Cranial neuropathy: This condition occurs when damage is done to any of the 12 cranial nerves, or the nerves that travel from your brain or brain stem. Cranial neuropathy can be categorized further into different types, which include Bell’s palsy, third nerve palsy, fourth nerve palsy, and others.

4. Autonomic neuropathy: This type of neuropathy occurs when the nerves that control your involuntary nervous system become damaged. Diabetes is the most common cause of autonomic neuropathy, but other conditions and infections can trigger this type of neuropathy, as well.

5. Focal neuropathy: One of the less common types of neuropathy, focal neuropathy only affects a single nerve. Also called mononeuritis. For example, it can affect a nerve in the thigh, wrist, or foot.

No Spend Month

It happens to most of us – overspending one month and not having enough money for the next. There are many ways to alter your budget to fix this problem. One of those solutions is having a no-spend month. That’s right, you don’t spend money on anything, but the necessities.

You might be thinking, “How can I do that?” Continue reading to find out.

• First, keep it simple. Try giving up only one luxury for the month. This tip is especially important for starting out.

For example, try avoiding shopping for clothes, shoes, etc. for a whole month. This can be a drastic change, and it is best to start with what you are most comfortable with in terms of eliminating expenses. If you feel like giving up multiple expenses for the month, start with decreasing one at a time. Maybe it is the coffee you get on the way to work each morning, or maybe it is cooking dinner at home for a whole week, instead of eating out.

Then, build up the amount of purchases you eliminate, until you aren’t spending money on unnecessary expenses by the end of the month. Lastly, you can also alter the time frame for how long you are doing this undertaking. Give it a go for a week. If that works, add on another week and so on. The main idea about the no-spend month is to truly keep it simple. Do what works for you and the plan won’t fail.

• One option to help motivate you to stick with the nospend month is to set a goal or give yourself a reason to save up for something. You might be wanting to add an X amount of money to your savings account for the future, or you might want to contribute a certain amount to your favorite cause or organization. This challenge can get tough. It is helpful to have a big picture in mind as to why you are doing this task.

• Can it be a complete no-spend month? Yes and no. You need to still pay the bills and will have to do some planning ahead of time for the other expenses, such as groceries, gas, toiletries, etc. Think about this goal in terms of not spending money on things that can be considered “luxury” items. Do you really need a new pair of shoes this month? Do you need to see the latest movie in the theaters or can you wait until it is available to rent? There is no exact way to have a complete no-spend month because things happen and expenses come up. Just don’t go overboard on buying items that aren’t needed at that time or could wait another month or so for purchasing. For the needed expenses, try finding deals before spending the money.

• Use what you have at home before going shopping. This is huge for groceries and toiletries. Remember that pantry full of products or extra shampoo you bought some time ago? Use those items first before purchasing more. Get creative and cook some fun meals for you and your family. You never know what will taste good

together until you try it. As for the unused toiletries just sitting there? Think about the money you spent on purchasing those items. Not using the product is really wasted money. Another option is utilizing the items to make other items. For example, low on household cleaning products? Make a homemade version. Most DIY cleaners take ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and dish soap. Recipes can be found through a quick online search.

• Stay at home, instead of going out. Date nights and family nights don’t need to be nights on the town. Try spending a day or night at home, watching your favorite movie, reading a classic book, cooking a meal together, playing a game outside, or doing absolutely nothing, but relaxing. There is no shame in spending a day or night at home. Plus, it puts more money in your pocket. If you feel the need to get out of the house, spend your time doing free things in your community, such as taking a walk in a park or volunteering.

A no-spend month can be tough. Create a plan and stick with it. Know exactly where you need to spend money and where you can save. At the end of the month, you might be surprised by how much money you saved.

Milestone Anniversaries in 2018 Times to Remember

Looking back at what’s happened in the past is interesting, nostalgic even. Many times, we find ourselves amazed at how much time has passed; that phrase “seems like it was just yesterday” pops into our heads as we realize that decades have passed. Whether the event is of historic significance or the birth, death, launch, or invention of something that impacted our lives, remembering the time when it happened and reflecting on what life was like then is a good thing.

2018 is a milestone year for many events that shaped generations.

HISTORICAL EVENTS

• World War I, The Great War, ended 100 years ago on November 11th, 1918, at 11:00. Over 8.5 million military personnel lost their lives during that war; the civilian casualties were even greater.

• One hundred years ago, the Spanish influenza resulted in over 500 million cases with the death toll estimated at between 50 and 100 million worldwide.

• 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the North Korean seizure of the USS Pueblo on January 23rd, 1968. Eleven months went by before the crew was released.

• December 24 will be the 50th anniversary of the first manned orbit around the moon by the crew of Apollo 8.

• October is the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act. One of the oldest trails is the Appalachian Trail, 2,200 miles long.

• February 11th was the 25th anniversary of the nomination of the first woman to become the US Attorney General. Janet Reno served from 1993 to 2001.

• 200 years ago, one of the most beloved Christmas carols, Silent Night, was performed for the first time in Oberndorf, Austria.

• On February 19th, 50 years ago, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood broadcast its first show.

• March 30th was the 75th anniversary of Oklahoma on Broadway.

• April 29th marked the 50th anniversary of another Broadway legend— Hair.

• 2001: A Space Odyssey was launched on April 6th, 1968. Happy 50th birthday, Hal! • 60 Minutes with its investigative journalism format launched is first telecast on September 24th, fifty years ago, and is still going strong.

• It’s been 40 years since Mork and Mindy was first televised on September 14th, 1978. Nanu, Nanu.

• The Jurassic juggernaut began on June 11th, 25 years ago, with the film launch of Jurassic Park. Those dinosaurs continue to roam the earth!

BIRTHS/DEATHS

• Frederick Douglas, a champion of civil rights, was born 200 years ago, in February 1818.

• Emily Bronte, author of Wuthering Heights, was born 200 years ago on July 30th. Wuthering Heights was her only novel and is considered one of the top 100 most popular novels.

• Within a two-month period, two leaders were lost to generations. On April 4th, 1968, Rev. Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. On June 5th, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down after a political rally in Los Angeles, California. Fifty years later, commentators still reflect on their legacies and what might have been, had King and Kennedy lived to fulfill their dreams.

These are just a few of the notable anniversary events of 2018. Personal milestones are equally important. Celebrate your milestone events—that first step by your child or grandchild, a retirement date finally achieved, first driver’s license, graduations, weddings, births—all are important marks of time.

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

FIERCE COMMERCIALIZATION

Makeup was a signifier of status and was worn by both men and women.

Egyptians were the first to adorn their faces with lipstick; purple and black were the signature shades. Of course, their lipstick was created from the earth, such as carmine dye from insects. They also used dangerous substances such as lead and iodine, which eventually gave them serious diseases.

Sumerian civilians also adored their lipstick which was composed out of fruits, henna, clay rust, and insects. Mesopotamian women added to the adorning of their lips by dabbing remnants of precious jewels over their lipstick to create the shimmery look.

Ancient Japanese women would wear dark lips extracted from beeswax and tar while ancient Greeks believed that dark lips were affiliated with prostitution because prostitutes were ordered by law to sport dark lips.

RED-LIPPED CONDEMNATION

During the Middle Ages, the church heavily banned Christian women from wearing lipstick and makeup all together. It was believed in the church that red lips were associated with devil worship and related to sorcery and witchcraft.

Although the church did accept lip salves, Christian women also had their alternatives to creating red lips by biting, pinching, and rubbing their lips with certain materials to make their lips appear redder.

RESERVED FOR THE “ELITE”?

Originally makeup was only reserved for the wealthy and popular. When Queen Elizabeth I popularized beautiful red lips during her reign in the 16th century, red lips became accessible only to women of royalty and stage actors and actresses.

A SYMBOL OF STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE

In the 1920s, the first wave of feminism made its appearance and women began to demand more rights and fight for equality among men. During this time, many of these passionate women flocked to lipstick which quickly became a heavy symbol of feminism. The women of this era simply wanted to be bolder and represent where they stood.

In the 1930s, the Depression Era, lipstick left a remarkable red trace here as well.

With matte finishes being one of the main contributors of the love and power of lipstick, the depression era resulted in more affordable (and accessible) lip products. Deep plum and burgundy were among consumer favorites.

During World War II, women were highly encouraged to wear lipstick that was especially red to uplift the grim atmosphere left over by the war. Perhaps this

The very first ad for lipstick was seen in 1884, courtesy of a French perfume company, Guerlain. Their lipstick was composed of deer tallow, beeswax and castor oil and wrapped in silk paper to preserve the narrow shape. Eventually in 1915, Maurice Levy invented lipsticks in cylindrical containers, likely for easier storage and application.

In 1923, James Bruce Mason, Jr. created the modern roll-up tube that we see today. Iconic silent movie stars would popularize deep red lips and viewers all over the nations will recreate this famous look. Lipstick was further encouraged by magazine ads and, of course, women ran to copy them. This was followed by an invention of the lipstick stencil which would supposedly bless women by helping them create the perfect “cupid’s bow” lip.

In the 1950s, iconic women such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Liz Taylor took red lips to a higher tier of beauty. They were setting trends in popular movies and women all around wanted to emulate their favorite stars. This is when lipstick was at its peak in popularity. “Kiss-proof” lipstick was also invented in this era by Hazel Bishop.

Fast forward to the 1990s where lipstick was hardly ever worn without dark lip liner! This is also when women became more environmentally conscious and demanded chemical-free lipstick with natural formulas.

Another popular fad of the 1990s was tattooing color on lips but that died out quickly.

Today, lipstick colors vary across the spectrum from nude to orange; there are more color options than ever, and more women are getting expressive and creative.

What Nobody Tells You About Making Friends as a Grown Up I can still remember all the things I wanted to tackle as I was entering adulthood. I asked questions and relied on Google for tips on things like creating a budget, building a career and how to get red wine stains out of a white blouse. (All the important stuff.)

Over time, I figured out the secrets to juggling it all and finding the answers on my own. There were even days where I felt like I was succeeding at this thing called “adulting.” Yet, here I was without the slightest clue when something as simple as making friends became such a puzzle.

Growing up, I was always a social person who loved meeting new people and making new friends. So how was it that, as I entered the after-college and newly married phase of my life, that forming new relationships was harder than ever? Even holding onto existing ones proved a little more difficult.

As I’ve grown through the years and reached this pinnacle last year of my twenties, here is what I’ve realized that nobody tells you about making friends as a grown up.

YOU HAVE TO GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE.

Remember what it was like as kids? You’d see another little boy or girl in your classroom with a sticker of your favorite cartoon character, and you declared right then and there that you were friends. Times were simpler. Many times, you are spending your days in and out of the same places doing most of the same things without the opportunity to meet new people. Getting out of your comfort zone by doing something new is a fantastic way to meet new like-minded people. You can explore your city, check out an event or Meetup, head to a trivia night at a local bar, take a class and try something new! If you’re determined to connect with new people, you may have to push yourself a little and get out there.

MAKING THE TIME FOR A SOCIAL LIFE IS A CHALLENGE.

I’m not talking about sending the casual text message or Facebook post. I’m talking about real quality time with people! One of the best ways to make new friendships is to get together in person and do something fun. With so much fighting for our attention and time, this can feel impossible sometimes! Think about how often you go back and forth on your calendar trying to find a free time to schedule something! Remember, this takes discipline. Even when you want it, you have to carve out the time for those people in your life that are important. This goes for new and old friendships. Scheduling a phone call with your best friend once a week might be what you need to keep that closeness.

There is nothing wrong with making relationships a priority on your calendar!

SIGNIFICANT OTHERS ADD ANOTHER ELEMENT TO THE MIX.

Albert Einstein was a genius, but I’d love to go back in time and challenge him to find the perfect equation for making friendships my husband and I enjoy equally. So often one part of the relationship makes an acquaintance or an old friend but when it comes time to meet? Things can get complicated.

Sometimes half of the party just doesn’t seem to hit it off as well.

Understanding that just because one of you has a friend who’s with someone, doesn’t mean your better halves always need to be included. Enjoying those friendships and having some quality time one on one is just as important.

Every now and again that miraculous moment happens when you do meet that perfect friend couple. When that happens, start scheduling those game nights!

FRIENDSHIPS ARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU REALIZED.

What I’ve come to realize is that the friendships I have now are some of the most meaningful I’ve ever experienced. The reason? I go out of my way to make each of them a priority, and so do they. Balancing a social life in the middle of everything else on your plate can seem daunting, but this is the time in our lives when relationships mean even more. The friendships we have are just that much sweeter.

Science-fiction lore has made astounding predictions into the future. In fact, what once may have been viewed as great imagination is now part of our civilized world. Today’s amazing technology may be tomorrow’s next invaluable gadget, tool, or means of transportation.

In 1962, voice actors George O’Hanlon and Mel Blanc reacted to the new script written by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera titled The Jetsons. It was laughter. In this new animated series, the characters had touch screens to receive meals, flat screen televisions for teleconferencing abilities, a home computer to complete homework assignments, and a treadmill for the family dog, Astro. Beyond the futuristic concepts, this cartoon shaped our view of the 21st century. Watching the Jetsons today, we may not live in space or fly our cars to other galaxies, but we can relate to the housekeeper robot named Rosie, in the form of two names: Alexa and the Roomba. And, just wait. A flying car, which will take off in similar fashion to a helicopter and fly like a plane will also be able to drive on roads. In another decade or two, a version of the TF-X may be parked in everyone’s driveway.

The Glass Bottom Boat, starring Doris Day and Rod Taylor and released in June 1966, was chock full of all sorts of futuristic technology. Rod’s character was a leading space scientist whose inventions went beyond space endeavors and into to his own home, supposedly to add conveniences to everyday life. Maybe so, maybe not.

For instance, the self-cleaning vacuum worked just fine – on the surface. However, it seemed to have a mind of its own and was more than a little crazed when anything landed on the floor. It managed to not only ingest a banana cream pie but also forcibly abscond with Doris’ shoe. The vacuum went back to its hideout under the cabinet with its bounty once cleanup was complete. Does that sound like the Roomba vacuum of today?

Pretty much, with the exception of the chirpy sound effects and perhaps the frenzied attitude. Other automation tools (a mixer that dropped down when needed, then cleaned itself, or a stove that cooked in mere minutes) made the kitchen the bane of his housekeeper’s existence.

Voice control is big news these days with in-home command systems; now we have the additional concern of how to keep homes safe using this new technology.

The boat in the film was outfitted with remote control steering and speed control. Our generation now has cars that drive themselves and some that can parallel park better than most people. Driverless cars show up fairly often in films. You may remember in Total Recall and I, Robot, people didn’t drive cars, robots did. Are we really ready to sit in the passenger seat?

In 1983, theatergoers witnessed Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker riding on what appeared to be a type of motorcycle hovering off the ground and zooming through the forests in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. In 2017, a prototype of the Aero-X hoverbike was designed, flying 10 feet off the ground and traveling up to 45 miles an hour. Appearing as large as a drone, it can carry a rider or deliver equipment or aid to those in need.

Computerized technology continues to take concepts seen first in movies, to the next level. One very intelligent system is known in Tony Stark’s laboratory as J.A.R.V.I.S, in 2008’s Iron Man, as Space X CEO Elon Musk is trying to find ways to “replicate a virtual workspace.” Just imagine the ability to remove the screen, and interact with hand gestures! This prototype is called “SpaceTop.” Technology is a good thing. Imagination and people with the ability to ask those ‘What if?’ questions, whether in film or TV, really do translate to reality in more cases than we might think.

Perhaps we should take the statement, “If you build it, they will come,” from Field of Dreams and transition it to ‘If you can dream it up, it can be a reality.’ However, it also leads to the question, is faster, easier always better? Makes you think, doesn’t it?

A Walking Symbol

Like a baby taking her first steps— “come on, just one foot after the other”—she already attempts to walk with goal in her little mind: to get from Point A to Point B. This is pretty much our main goal when it comes to walking anywhere. But there is something powerful about walking as a group or a mass. While their goal is still getting from Point A to Point B, there are deeper symbols and reasons behind walking as a crowd.

WHAT WALKING CAN REPRESENT

A movement or protest. Walking has always been a staple of activism. When a group, whether large or small, comes together under a mutual purpose, walking as a mass shows great solidarity among the individuals and strong dedication to their cause. With many protests in the past being heard by oppressors and being successful in pursuing their goal, the walking is sure to continue. Walking as a mass is powerful, attention-grabbing, and many times makes others of the same passions want to chime in.

“Walking away from the past.” A group of protesters can coalesce because of one thing: they have grown tired of dealing with their past and present obstacles (whether personal, socioeconomic, racial, or health-related), and want to work towards a better future. Walking can represent symbolic action of “walking” away from the painful past and walking towards a healthier, more joyful future.

Again, here’s the profound concept of getting from Point A to Point B…just taking one step in front of the other.

Assertion and unity. Walking as a group shows such a strong force. When people walk together under one united purpose, they are not distracted by what goes on beside them or behind them. They are only focused on what is ahead: a brighter, more productive future. The walking mass doesn’t show fear of those who would try to stop them or harm them in any way.

They are assertive and intentional about marching to spread their cause. They want other people to be aware of what they are pursuing, and what they stand for and they want to motivate outside individuals to round up together and assert whatever their cause may be.

HOW IT ALL STARTED?

Although there are a plethora of social marches in history, we will focus on the history of the famous March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in 1963 where he delivered his impeccable “I Have A Dream” speech, we can see how this march came about. Many African Americans—before and during the Civil Rights’ era—became fed up with racial inequalities and injustice with segregation flooding up in school systems, transportation companies, and even in restaurants and just in everyday life. The march was an integration of 160,000 black people and 60,000 white people; even non-blacks have had enough of these social issues.

This showed oppressors that both races had a desire to come together and promote desegregation not only across the nation but across the world. They aimed to achieve equal employment opportunities as well. This march was one of the main social events that eventually led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Walking as a mass is believed and expected to bring about positive change.

WHY WE DO CHARITY WALKS?

It is conceivable that charity walks were inspired by famous marches in history. We know when a massive crowd forms with a mutual goal in mind, we capture attention and a collective cry is heard from the public. Very much like protest marches, charity walks attract numerous people who are married to a certain cause who are willing to “walk” to raise money for a certain foundation. Just as protest marches are stronger with more people— and diversity—charity walks are stronger and more impactful with more passionate ndividuals.

So, whether you are walking for a protest, a charity event, or if you are just walking for anything at all, know that walking is also very symbolic and powerful. It’s all about getting from Point A to Point B…one foot after the other.

Road Manners

Did you learn your manners as a child? Do you remember most of them and still use them? What about driving manners?

We could all use a refresher on basic driving guidelines, also known as road manners or common courtesy. With so many news stories about road rage, distracted drivers talking on cell phones, eating, and doing who knows what tasks, plus folks hitting the roads for vacations, it’s a good time to remind ourselves of some of the basics we learned in driver’s education. See how many of these you still do on a regular driving day.

• The stop sign is the signal to stop – not roll through, slow down, tap your brakes, or check to see if anyone is in the opposing lane. It means stop, period.

• Turn signals are there for a reason. Drivers behind you have no idea what you plan to do unless you signal your intent. If you’re going to turn right or left, turn on your signal. If you’re changing lanes on a multi-lane highway, signal long enough to let the driver behind you and in the other lane know.

• Don’t hog the left lane. Its real intent is for passing, not a personal drive-thru traffic lane to get ahead of everything in front of you. If you’re not planning to pass someone, stay to the right.

• Be aware of tractor-trailers on the road. We

were taught in driving class that they are not able to stop as fast as a car and need plenty of room to maneuver.

That hasn’t changed. Darting in and out in front of them is asking for trouble. Use your mirrors and give them plenty of space before moving back over after passing.

• Be courteous to others. If someone is trying to

enter the stream of traffic and you have time to make space for them, let them in. They will appreciate the gesture, especially in heavy traffic. It would be nice if you got a wave or nod of thanks, but if you don’t, no matter – it’s the right thing to do. Hopefully, someone will do the same for you.

• Daily commutes can be frustrating. Leaving

home a little early to get ahead of traffic can make the morning so much easier. The same goes for the afternoon drive home. If the five o’clock traffic is like a parking lot, why not wait a few minutes before leaving and let the traffic thin out rather than sitting in a hot car trying to mentally move the traffic along.

• Be aware of road conditions. We worry about

driving conditions in the winter months but tend to not pay as much attention to rainy or foggy road conditions at other times. However, suddenly wet roads are hazardous and can be quite slick. Adapting to changing road situations is an important defensive driving skill.

• Aggressive driving is a real problem

and reacting to an aggressive driver is likely to make a situation worse. If someone is acting aggressively toward you, get to a populated area and pull off. Call 911 if necessary. Don’t try to handle an out-of-control driver alone. Don’t take chances.

• Pay close attention to work zones. Those cones

and warning lights are there for a reason – to protect workers and to protect you. If you see a “lane closed ahead” notice, pay attention and move to the open lane.

How many times have you seen someone continue driving to try to get as far ahead as possible before moving into the designated lane? Besides being irritating, it’s of little use, since eventually, everyone will have to slow down through the work zone or get stuck in the closed lane until someone finally lets them over.

• Listen for emergency vehicles. Pull over for

them, especially at intersections. They’re either on the way to help someone or transporting someone who needs to get help quickly.

• Watch out for school buses. They may be off the

roads for the summer, but before long they’ll be back.

Give plenty of space and time for kids to cross streets and enter/exit the buses.

If you read through this list and can check off that you routinely do all these suggestions, good for you.

Reminders are good things. Happy driving on your daily commutes, your road trips, or your sightseeing excursions.

CHIPPING IN FOR THE CAUSE 2nd ANNUAL EZRA GOLDBACH FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Ezra Goldbach Foundation was established in 2017 as a non-profit organization formed in the memory of Ezra Goldbach, an 18-year-old freshman college student at Campbell University in the five-year golf management program. Ezra had a love for family, friends, and sports but a real passion for golf.

On July 28, 2017, we had our first Ezra Goldbach Foundation Golf Tournament in Ezra’s memory and to honor his love for golf. Our goal was to be able to generate enough money to award two scholarships to upcoming students with academic merit. The week before the event, the tournament was full to the maximum capacity. We were overwhelmed by the love and support from family, friends and the community for Ezra and all of us. Pilot Knob Park Country Club was so accommodating to hold the event there. The country club volunteered to let us use their kitchen, and their cooks even volunteered their services. All the food was donated from different restaurants and people in the community. People said, “What can I do to help?” It is such a great feeling that an 18-year-old left that big of an impression on so many people, young and old. We just couldn’t believe how many people wanted to donate and volunteer. It was such an outpouring of love!

We know how much we loved Ezra, but everywhere you went people talked about him as the smiley, blonde headed young man that was always friendly and just loved going to the golf course to play. It just warms your heart and makes you feel so good!

On Friday, May 25, 2018, we had the honor of awarding the two students with scholarships from the foundation. They were both at two different schools and counties. One was awarded

by Ezra’s dad, Don Goldbach, to Jamie Smith at East Surry High School, and the other was awarded by Ezra’s stepmother, Brenna Goldbach, to Ashleigh Washburn at South Stokes High School. What a wonderful feeling to know we all did a wonderful thing in Ezra’s memory. At Christmas time, Ezra’s family went shopping for the foundation and donated a full Christmas to an underprivileged family in King – new bikes for all the children, clothes and food. And in the spring, the foundation was involved in building a playground for children with disabilities in King.

On Friday, July 27, 2018, we are having our 2nd Annual Ezra Goldbach Golf Tournament, and we already have received several teams. There are 18 teams in the morning and 18 in the afternoon. It is Captain’s Choice/Scramble format and registration is $75 per person with four on a team. We are also starting to get items for the silent auction which was a huge success last year! Be watching the Facebook page of the Ezra Goldbach Foundation Golf Tournament. Sponsorship levels available are Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Tee.

REBECCA CLARK BRINGS HOLLYWOOD JOBS TO OUR CITY

As part of a creative family from Kernersville, NC, Rebecca was steeped in the arts at an early age. She sought a career that incorporated her interest and experience in visual art, theater, film, and music, and found just that at the Piedmont Triad Film Commission.

Her job as Executive Director of the Piedmont Triad Film Commission is to recruit out-of-state film, television, commercial and video production to our area. She markets our beautiful locations, from historic buildings to farmland and private residences, as well as the qualified production crew we have here thanks to UNC School of the Arts, UNC Greensboro, Piedmont Community College and Wake Forest University.

“The outstanding film crew here, along with the area’s talented screenwriters, directors, and producers, are all top notch. I am passionate about marketing, or, as I like to call it, ‘showing off,’ these wonderful locals, this creative community and recruiting business that benefits us all,” said Rebecca.

Films made here provide much needed local jobs and boost our region’s economy substantially through money spent at our hotels, rental cars, restaurants, catering companies, site rentals, equipment and supplies, construction materials and much more.

Film also creates tourism. Projects filmed in North Carolina attract visitors from all over the world.

Priddy’s General Store in Danbury, for example, regularly welcomes tourists and fans of Eli Roth’s film Cabin Fever. And Mount Airy attracts visitors worldwide for its association with “The Andy Griffith Show” and its star.

“The film industry is unique to other economic development efforts,” explained Rebecca. “It has benefited our rural counties that truly needed the additional influx of dollars. Matthew Weiner’s film Are

When asked her favorite film that was shot here, Rebecca says she has a deep regard for each, but her favorite is Two Soldiers, a heartwarming film she recruited here in 2001 that won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short.

We are living in an age where folks are becoming more expressive with writing, photos, and videos. For those feeling led to blog, here’s how to begin!

WHY BLOG?

Tell your story and document a personal journey. If your aim is to reveal who you are to the nations, share an inspiring life story, or document a personal journey that you believe will motivate others, then a personal blog will suit your yearnings. A personal blog is basically an interface where you can be as quirky, intelligent, fashionable, and as creative as you dare to be. No one can tell you how to behave on your website…the beauty of having a personal blog is basking in your free reign.

So, if you want to document your college experience, a workout journey, a pregnancy term, first year of marriage, studying abroad, mission work, or even dealing with or recovering from cancer, a personal blog may be a milestone in your path.

Express your insights, knowledge, interests, and passions. What is something you have down to an art? What are your deepest passions? What are some topics and ideas that you can really teach others? What do you live to talk about and break down? A blog is also an outlet for you to disburse the mysteries and intricacies of your mind. This area of blogging really helps others to see who you are, what you know, and what you stand for. If teaching people is

one of your love languages, this is a fitting option for an aspiring blogger. This option of blogging is ideal for food bloggers, book bloggers, photographers, educators, activists, sociologists, art critics, theorists, and just anyone who enjoys tinkering with ideas.

Share your faith. Any believer in God who wants to exercise their spiritual gifts, edify fellow believers, and help birth new believers will love creating a faith blog. With the gift of technology, faith bloggers can reach thousands and millions of people from diverse nations (the Disciples probably wish they had this luxury); these bloggers don’t even have to travel unless they feel led to. Technology is making it easier to spread the Gospel and spiritually teach others every day.

Hone your writing, technological, or speaking skills. There is nothing wrong with blogging if your writing skills aren’t up to par or if you’re not the best with technology. Allow yourself to learn and strengthen your skills. There is no wrong or right way to blog. The only “wrong” way to blog is to be anyone or anything other than yourself. That’s the idea of a blog – to showcase who you are and what your personal values, convictions, and opinions are.

HOW TO START A BLOG?

Read! The best writers are usually better readers and learners. Reading everything from novels, magazines, newspapers, other blogs,

websites, and nonfiction will provide you with knowledge, help you explore your writing style, and give you different perspectives.

Study other bloggers. You may look at other experienced bloggers as a template to help you get started on your project. Look at their layouts. What plugins or interesting features stand out? Does their blog have social media buttons to access the blogger’s channels? Is the overall theme of the blog consistent with their content? This may help you shape your own blog, but remember to be original!

Ask yourself what you want to talk about and explore. Many people want to blog but may not know where to begin. A grand starting point is to explore yourself. Bloggers cannot just sit down and begin writing; they must have a main objective – otherwise they will have an empty, meaningless article and readers wouldn’t get anything out of it. So, find your main objective.

What is your “why”? What topics or causes are you glued to and why do you want to write about them?

Find a blogging site where you can create your website using templates. Wordpress, Wix, and Weebly are free with designs and templates you can select from.

If you feel called to start a blog, don’t ignore it!

When you birth your blog, be sure to promote it via social media, business cards, or the oldfashioned word of mouth!

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF A MASTER BEDROOM AND BATH Behind the door of a master bedroom is a room for privacy and relaxation, as well as a sleep sanctuary. The color of the walls, the placement of the bed, and the accessories define an escape from the outside world. Although, it is not a room for visitors, the master bedroom has become a room beyond the placement of apparel and shoes. It is a room to become reenergized or to attain tranquility and peace.

THEME

The first question is, “What helps you to relax and feel comfortable?” Each style you select will lend itself toward different features and colors. If you are seeking a natural theme, such as tan and off-white, the selection will fit well with your choice. For instance, a romantic style would suggest a four-posted bed with a canopy, and include rich wood tones, and soft colors such as white and beige with gold or silver tones. On the other hand, a country style exudes openness and comfort. It may feature an iron framed bed, a sitting bench or chair, hard wood flooring, and natural lighting filtering through the windows. With soft wall colors, bold patterns may be found in the print of the quilt or rug.

Themes can include the beach or a rustic setting, tropical or Mediterranean, cottage or French country, Asian, eclectic, or traditional. A few accessories can give your master bedroom the feel that you’re looking to create.

FUNCTIONALITY

In planning for the elements of your master bedroom, consider what type of bed and accessories would offer the most storage and essential space.

Ideas to consider: • A platform bed with drawers underneath ensures a clutter free zone.

• Are you a night time reader? If so, where would a table lamp fit your purpose?

• Is there room for a bench or chair?

• Is a floor length mirror necessary?

• In which direction is the room facing?

Are you going to receive sun exposure in the morning or evening? How much light do you want to allow in your room?

The theme and color scheme will lead to the purpose of the finer details, such as placement of the essential and necessary accessories.

THE BATHROOM

The one room where your day begins and ends is in the bathroom. It is a place to reflect upon health and wellness, inspiration and positive emotions. A bathroom no longer needs to feel cramped, dark, and cluttered; it should fit your personal needs and lifestyle.

STORAGE

Creating more efficient storage spaces is one of the key goals in finding a functional and peaceful room. And, there is no place better to begin than in the master bathroom. The visual of a cluttered countertop needs to change. You may begin by adding specialty dividers for cosmetics and jewelry, whether it is a drawer or a cabinet.

(Ask yourself how much of what is found on the countertop is used? Be selective and minimize your “clutter.”

Would an additional outlet, even inside a cabinet assist your daily routine? If room allows, consider adding a small ottoman, which opens up for added storage.

LIGHTING

There are many wonderful ways to create an inviting atmosphere through natural light. A dimmer switch can help set the tone for an evening shower or early morning; however, relying only on natural lighting, you may want to research the benefits of solar tubes and remote-controlled skylights, with the option to open and close.

SHOWER OR BATHTUB

One of the biggest questions couples ponder is whether to include the bathtub in the master bathroom. It is one additional piece that consumes space. In the modern era of luxury, frameless glass showers or tiled showers without a door have become quite popular.

It suits couples of all ages, and is especially practical for the elder couple who need additional space to enter and exit. (If a bathtub is important for bathing young children or grandchildren, consider adding it to the plans of a shared bathroom.)

BY DENISE HEIDEL Solitude and loneliness are two very different things. Solitude is a deliberate choice of being alone, while loneliness is a feeling of being alone. The irony is that loneliness can happen any time, even while surrounded by a group of people.

The root of loneliness stems from a need for emotional connection. We need to feel that others hear us and understand us; that we aren’t alone in our feelings. It’s more than a physical state of being alone, but a lack of emotional connectivity.

And as we get older, and our lives move into different seasons, loneliness can increase.

As relationships become more and more disconnected, loneliness is on the rise. And a 2015 study showed that 75% of Americans feel lonely.

For instance, a young mother who is the first of her social circle to have a child may feel very lonely and isolated because her new role as mother has shifted her priorities. She may not feel quite as connected to friends who haven’t yet started their own families.

Flash forward, and that same mother may feel a sense of loneliness if she struggles with parenting issues none of her other friends seem to face. Or, if she gets divorced, she may feel isolated from married friends. When she becomes an empty nester or retires from work – all of these things represent different seasons, and with them, potentially, a sense of isolation.

It’s for this reason that women should prioritize friend time. The effort to periodically put in face-time and communicate one-on-one through conversation is a key component to fighting the isolation that ushers in loneliness. But beyond that, a few key points about loneliness:

• It’s a feeling. And while feelings are valid, it doesn’t mean they are always accurate.

Loneliness as a feeling can be fought when we consciously choose to acknowledge our feelings with another person. That doesn’t come easy for women, who generally don’t like to ask for help (for fear of bothering someone or appearing inadequate).

• Reaching out to others may be the very thing needed to battle loneliness, but it also may serve as a lifeline to someone who is afraid to reach out.

• Write in a journal. Writing is therapeutic and enables us to express thoughts and emotions in an honest way. Getting it out on paper may help identify loneliness triggers.

• Recognize that silence is just that. Silence.

We live in a noisy world and silence can be intimidating. But for those who push past the uncomfortable awkwardness of silence, they may discover a deep love for it.

• When you’re lonely, Ben & Jerry are not your friends. Avoid turning to comfort foods and, instead, do something healthy – even a walk around your neighborhood with some music may help lighten the feeling of loneliness.

• Smile at a stranger. Sometimes, the simple act of showing kindness to someone else, even a stranger, is enough to engage in a feeling of connection.

• Joining a group of people with similar interests may be a great solution for loneliness. Finding a group who share the same hobbies or interests may help disengage the negative self-talk that can be a side effect of loneliness and help establish new friendships and relationships.

• Get off social media (which has its own special way of cultivating loneliness) and do some volunteer work.

When feelings of loneliness set in, take action. Loneliness can lead to depression.

And if you suspect depression may be at the root of the problem, seek medical assistance.

But more than anything, be confident that you are not alone. So many understand and share the feelings you have. Be bold enough to seek those people out and ask for help.

ABBY LOOPER Abby Looper is a hairstylist and makeup artist at Farrago in Lewisville. She’s been licensed almost three years and loves it! Food crazes come and go. A few years ago, it was bacon everything. Including bacon and chocolate (a combination that is baffling!). Lately – much to the delight of pickle enthusiasts – it’s all about pickles.

Fried pickle chips have been around for a while, but fried pickle poppers are taking things to a new level. Pickle dip is a great addition at a party, and dill pickle soup is awesomeness in a bowl. And just as bacon infiltrated the dessert market, so have pickles with pickle cupcake recipes for those who are up for the challenge.

The pickle craze isn’t just about the flavor (though it can’t be denied that it’s a great bonus). Pickles are good for you and bring with them many health benefits.

Antioxidants. Pickles are full of them! These antioxidants are preserved in the pickling process and can help the body fight against free radicals.

Digestion. The pickling process is a great way to promote healthy bacteria in our digestive tracts. Plus, the vinegar in pickles can protect the stomach lining from damaging acids.

Cures Morning Sickness. The human body is amazing. Scientists have discovered why pregnant women and pickle cravings so often go hand-inhand! Sour foods can help reduce nausea and the urge to vomit.

Helps with Weight Loss. Because pickles are low in calories, plus they are a vegetable, they are a healthy option for those who are trying to lose weight. Plus their high water content helps fuel hydration. Just be careful to monitor the sodium!

Promotes Liver Health. Pickles can help remove toxins from the blood, which in turns, helps out the liver.

Good for Diabetics. Science has shown that pickles can help control blood sugar in diabetics, thanks to the low glycemic-index.

Almost Instant Relief from Cramping. Get leg cramps? Get pickle juice. A 2013 study showed that drinking pickle juice could help cramps dissipate 45% faster.

DILL PICKLE SOUP RECIPE

It may be summer, but pickle soup is delicious. Crank up the air conditioner and try a bowl!

INGREDIENTS:

5-1/2 cups chicken broth 1-3/4 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and quartered 2 cups chopped carrots (smaller dice) 1 cup chopped dill pickles (smaller dice ~ about 3 large whole dills) 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup sour cream 1/4 cup water 2 cups dill pickle juice* 1-1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning 1/2 teaspoon table salt 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

DIRECTIONS:

In a large pot, combine broth, potatoes, carrots, and butter. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender. Add pickles and continue to boil.

Reduce the Risk of Yeast Infections. Pickles can help keep probiotic bacteria at a good level and therefore, keep yeast under control.

In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sour cream and water, making a paste. Vigorously whisk sour cream mixture (2 Tablespoons at a time) into soup. (This will also break up some of your potatoes which is okay. You might see some initial little balls of flour form, but between the whisking and boiling, all will disappear. Don’t panic.)

Helps Manage Stress. Huh? Yep – the same stress that causes stomach upset and nausea may benefit from a pickle. The relief of a calm stomach may help reduce stress in of itself.

Add pickle juice, Old Bay, salt (*see below), pepper and cayenne. Cook 5 more minutes and remove from heat.

Serve immediately.

Reduce Constipation. Pickles are high in fiber and have a high water content. Those factors, along with the probiotics that accompany pickles, may help eliminate constipation (pun intended).

*All pickle juice is not created equal. Some is saltier than others. Taste your soup after adding the pickle juice and final seasonings. It’s possible you will not need any salt or would prefer more or less.

Consuming pickles may not be ideal for everyone, especially those who need to closely monitor their sodium intake. However, the benefits of pickles shouldn’t be overlooked.

In 2018, many Americans have been glued to hearing the latest news from across the pond. Many waited to hear about the birth of the new Royal baby or to get a glimpse of Meghan Markle’s wedding dress at the Royal wedding. These are just two events that have captured the interest of Americans.

Throughout the decades, the United Kingdom and the United States have cross-influenced each other and their cultures. Maybe it is because of the connection these two countries have that dates back to the 1700s. Both have inspired the other’s clothing, music, and more. But, do you know exactly how Great Britain has changed American culture?

Test your knowledge below to see if you are an adopted citizen of the United Kingdom.

• British influence dates back to revolutionary America. English philosopher and Enlightenment thinker John Locke inspired many of the ideals in the Declaration of Independence. Along with Locke, other English philosophers, who made their mark on early American history are Thomas Paine, who is known for writing the pamphlet “Common Sense” and saying the famous line “Give me liberty, or give me death.”

In addition, the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights impact our government. Lastly, the tunes of England have carried over into early American music. For example, one can easily hear the commonalities between “My Country Tis of Thee” and “God Save the King/Queen.”

• One can credit the beginning of the pop-culture “British invasion” to The Beatles. This popular band first arrived in the United States in February 1964 and, since then, they have made a lasting impression on the 50 states. The Beatles aren’t the only band who has musically moved across oceans. Other groups have included One Direction, The Spice Girls, and The Rolling Stones.

• Another area where America is influenced by the United Kingdom is in fashion. Iconic designers, including Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, have inspired many Americans. These stylists are commonly worn by the Duchess of Cambridge.

• Speaking of the Royal family, one could say the Windsors are as famous in the Land of the Free as they are in jolly ol’ England. People throughout the world were enamored with Princess Diana and now Princes William and Harry are having similar influences. As mentioned above, Americans like to have a front row seat, via the television, social media, or news, to what is happening in the lives of our favorite family. The Royals’ effect has mainly been seen in fashion, but it has also inspired American entertainment. Lastly, the Windsors have raised awareness worldwide for charitable causes, such as mental health and veterans.

• Films and television shows, such as Harry Potter, James Bond, The King’s Speech, Downton Abbey, and Doctor Who were all first popular in England before their popularity carried over into the US. • The works of English authors Charles Dickens, H.G. Wells, and Jane Austen are now timeless tales in our country that many people read every year. Where would the 50 states be without Dickens’ A Christmas Carol or Austen’s Mr. Darcy?

• Names of cities, towns, schools, and more places have felt the English spirit. Doesn’t it seem like almost every state has a city named York, Manchester, Wilmington, Norfolk, Lancaster County, or New London?

All of these names have English origins and meanings. Most are named after English leaders, kings, queens, or places.

• Lastly, one can draw the conclusion that the first design for the American flag was guided by the British Union flag. The original flag of the United States included the 13 red and white stripes, but instead of 50 stars in the upper left, it was the British Union flag. The Grand Union Flag, as it became known, was flown for the first time in 1775.

The United Kingdom has left a huge impact on the United States. The list above is just a few of the many ways the country has done that. For years to come, the two will continue to influence each other and it will be interesting to see what new trends, music, fashion, etc., will come in the future.

SAMARITAN MINISTRIES 5th ANNUAL TOUR DE LLAMA BIKING FUNDRAISER APPROACHING On June 23, 2018, Samaritan Ministries will host their 5th annual Tour de Llama bike event at Divine Llama Vineyards. Arbor Investment Advisors is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the event.

All proceeds raised through rider registrations and sponsorships help provide food and shelter to our hungry and homeless neighbors in the Winston-Salem area.

Last year, 57 sponsors and 173 cyclists raised $21,573. Samaritan Ministries’ goal this year is $20,000.

The fee is $30 per person and riders must be 18 years or older.

Sponsorships are $250. Samaritan would like to thank Arbor Investment Advisors, Ken’s Bike Shop, as well as all sponsor and vendor partners for helping to plan this special day for the riders.

The three bike routes are in rural Yadkin County and go through beautiful scenery with minimal traffic. Riders can choose 21, 36 and 60-mile routes that begin at 8:30 a.m. Day-of registration opens at 7:30 a.m.

Active.com has also developed a four-ride package deal. Riders can pay $100 and participate in four rides that all benefit four local nonprofits. The rides are Saddles and Spokes (June 2); Tour de Kale (June 16); Tour de Llama (June 23) and Operation Red Sleigh (July 21).

“This is the first year we’ve added a 21-mile route, so we anticipate having more riders join us for this exciting event,” said Sonjia Kurosky, executive director of Samaritan Ministries.

After the ride, attendees are invited to stick around for lunch, tours, llama activities, photo opportunities, wine tastings and more on the farm.

Fireworks have been part of celebrations worldwide for centuries. Beginning with China in the 7th century, fireworks have been used to mark special occasions. There’s nothing like the awe of looking up in the sky to see plumes of color bloom out, looking so close to the ground, or the silvery twinkling lights cascading down, followed by that boom that makes you jump.

WHERE ARE SOME OF THE LARGEST FIREWORKS DISPLAYS?

• Bonfire Night in Great Britain is one of the largest. The display, on November 5, commemorates the 1606 execution of Guy Fawkes, who attempted to blow up Parliament. Fireworks exploding in the air to mark an attempted explosion on the ground – somewhat ironic don’t you think?

• In Diwali, India, fireworks light the night skies during October and November as part of the Festival of Lights.

• Bastille Day in France celebrates the history of the French Revolution and includes parades, fireworks, and other festivities.

• Chinese New Year is celebrated the first weekend of February in conjunction with the Lantern Festival.

• One of the largest New Year’s Eve countdown celebrations was in 2016 when 810,904 fireworks were used in Manila, Philippines.

• Thunder over Louisville is a massive fireworks show to help kick off Kentucky Derby

• The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics used 22 tons of fireworks during their three-hour opening ceremony.

WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?

• Fireworks are not fun for everyone. We tend to forget that for some, fireworks explosions can trigger PTSD episodes. Let your neighbors know if you plan a backyard fireworks show so they can plan accordingly.

And be aware of signs that may be posted in yards requesting courtesy with fireworks.

• Dogs and cats are not fans of fireworks.

Dogs have been so terrified that they run away from home to escape the sounds. Give neighbors a heads-up so they can provide a safe place for pets while fireworks are going off.

• Half of all firework-related injuries are to children below the age of 16.

• Sparklers burn at temperatures 15 times the point of boiling water. Three sparklers held together equate to the heat of a blowtorch.

To be sure sparklers are out, plunge them into a bucket of water.

So, whatever the celebration, whatever the season, enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly.

Moonwatch – A surprisingly colorful face with a familiar smell…

BY MARK MATHOSIAN What colors do you see when you look at the Moon? Your answer is probably shades of white and gray. So, you may be surprised to learn the Moon is actually quite colorful, with countless shades of yellow, orange, blues, browns and purple. It’s just that for most of us, our eyes are not sensitive enough to distinguish them, even through a telescope.

The easiest way to see the colors is by examining enhanced digital photographs of the Moon’s surface. Highly sensitive camera lenses capture muted colors. Although a tweaked photograph is needed to expose delicate hues and shades, American astronauts astutely observed a few colors on the Moon while orbiting in their spacecraft during Apollo 12 in 1969.

In a post flight report, Astronauts Charles “Pete” Conrad and Alan Bean noted, “The first day, everything appeared to be dull gray. If we looked very closely, of course, now and then it was possible to observe a white rock or, in an area where we had disturbed the soil, perhaps a slightly different shade of gray. Between the first and second days, definite color change accompanied the Sun-angle change. On the second day, everything that had appeared to be gray on the first day started looking either a dark or a tannish brown.”

Why are there different colors on the Moon? Simple answer: The moon’s surface consists of many different minerals. These colorful minerals pop out in photographs enhanced with software like Adobe Photoshop. For example, blue pops out from titanium rich minerals on Mare Tranquillitatis and the impact crater Aristarchus. Shades of brown appear on Mare Serenitatis, a basaltic lunar plain rich in iron from ancient lava flows. Dried lava beds, craters, and rocks all have subtle color differences visible in processed photos. Let’s move on to the Moon’s smell. First I’ll set the scene. When astronauts walk on the Moon, their spacesuits get covered with lunar dust called regolith. Regolith is fine gray lunar soil and rock fragments from bedrock blended with silicon dioxide glass created by meteoroids crashing into the moon’s surface. The meteoroids have been smashing into the moon for billions of years, and heat from their impacts fuses the meteoroid material with lunar topsoil creating the glass that shatters into tiny sharp pieces. The glass bits also become mixed with elements on the Moon such as iron, calcium and magnesium. You may wonder how you can smell anything on the Moon since it has no air. The answer is, you can’t. Astronauts didn’t smell the moon dust until after they returned to the command module and removed their spacesuits.

Astronauts Jack Schmitt and Gene Cernan on the Apollo 17 mission said that when they got undressed, they handled and smelled the dense lunar topsoil. Schmitt radioed to NASA in Houston that the odor was quite strong. “When I took my helmet off after the first EVA (extravehicular-activity), I had a significant reaction to the dust. My turbinates (cartilage plates in the walls of the nasal chambers) became swollen.”

Astronaut Cernan further described the smell in the lunar module as “spent gunpowder,” commenting that the Moon dust “smells like someone just fired a carbine in here.” They also said they could taste the metallic-like substance in the middle of their tongues. Interestingly, the powerful stench of the lunar dust gave Astronaut Schmitt the first case ever of extraterrestrial hay fever. With a congested voice he radioed to Houston that hay fever like symptoms came on “pretty fast.”

So, there you have it. The Moon is truly a colorful place, not just shades of white and gray. It smells like a spent shotgun shell and causes hay fever like symptoms if you ingest its dust. No doubt there will be more revelations after future Moon missions. You can look forward to reading about them in future columns of & Another Thing.
