Welcome to 2017!

Are you as surprised as I am that 2016 is behind us? It feels like we just started, but here we go again…. Starting a fresh, new year, embracing New Year’s resolutions, and anticipating all that 2017 will bring.

I won’t lie – the end of 2016 brought some most unwelcome news when we learned that my best friend and business partner, Forsyth Family’s publisher Robin Bralley, has breast cancer. We had prayed for a different diagnosis, but God has other plans. We begin 2017 with heartfelt prayers for Robin and her family as she takes this difficult journey. As a breast cancer survivor myself, I know how terrifying those words “You have cancer,” are. They are words I wouldn’t wish anyone to hear, but much less a woman as near and dear to my heart as Robin is. Our team is rallying behind Robin, though and I am confident that God hears our prayers. We ask for your prayers, too – for healing and a quick recovery for Robin, and the strength and courage she and her family need during this difficult time.

If you read this letter regularly, you know that my husband officially retired at the end of 2016. After 30-some years as the owner of TJ’s Body Shop, Tim has officially turned over the reins to his long-time employee, Brad Lawson. We are very excited for Brad and know he will continue the same quality care and service that Tim has offered our community for decades… but anyone who knows my husband knows he’s not going to be sitting still for very long. Ever the car guy, Tim will be buying and selling used cars. He’s just going to be cutting way back on his hours.

In addition to Tim’s retirement, the other big change this year will be my son, Tanner’s graduation from UNC-Wilmington. With a major in Management Information Systems, I am excited for Tanner and the future that lies ahead. He was able to have an internship in Winston-Salem last summer, and my mother’s heart prays he will be returning to the area, but who knows? I’m not sure where my son will head after graduation, but I know that he has a bright future ahead of him. I will certainly keep our readers updated as decisions are made!

H.O.P.E. of Winston-Salem (H.O.P.E. – Help Our People Eat) is a grassroots nonprofit whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the over 40,000 children in Forsyth County who are at risk for hunger and to connect families with onsite support agencies. Founded in 2013 by Ben and Marty Tennille, H.O.P.E serves the community through the efforts of 62 faith groups (interfaith), three colleges, numerous community groups and over 1,500 individual volunteers. To date, H.O.P.E. has provided over 117,000 meals to children ages 0-18 and over 170,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to families in food deserts in Forsyth County.

H.O.P.E. uses kid-friendly, decorated musical vans to deliver healthy meals for children and fresh produce for adults to 26 sites every weekend, year-round, in Forsyth County, filling a tremendous need on the weekends when children are not being served lunches through their schools. These trucks have become a staple in neighborhoods where fresh food can be limited, proudly serving nutritious meals to 1,100 children each week.

But H.O.P.E. is so much more than just an organization that delivers food to hungry children. H.O.P.E. provides educational resources to take the improvement of lives one step further, by offering enrichment opportunities, including cooking, exercise

and art classes, plus financial advice for parents with limited funds who are shopping for healthy food. And H.O.P.E. is looking forward to making an even bigger impact in 2017 with a new facility under construction in Kimberley Park, next to a hydroponics urban farm which will contribute fresh produce year-round. The number of meals and amount of fresh produce delivered will be substantially more, plus the new facility will provide a classroom to teach farming, nutrition, exercise, and art and STEM classes for children. Empowering families to live healthy lives is an important part of H.O.P.E.’s mission.

In 2016, H.O.P.E. held their first Red Apple Harvest for H.O.P.E. fundraising dinner, presented by Allegacy Federal Credit Union, raising proceeds to supply over 65,000 healthy meals to children here in WinstonSalem. Like any nonprofit organization, sponsors, donors and volunteers are critical to the success of H.O.P.E. Every dollar donated provides a healthy meal for a child.

Dedicated volunteers include bakers, lunch packers and volunteers to help deliver on Sunday routes. None of what H.O.P.E. provides would be possible without donors and volunteers all year.

RESOLUTIONS FOR EYE CARE

As New Year approaches, many of us make resolutions to improve our health. We start diets, join a gym or try a new “quit smoking” plan. What resolutions can we make to improve our eye health?

1. WEAR SUNGLASSES -- UV exposure can make you more likely to get cataracts or develop macular degeneration. Sunglasses also reduce the risk of skin cancer of the eyelids. Choose sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection.

2. DIET WITH YOUR EYES IN MIND -- Certain foods can help

fight off vision problems like macular degeneration, cataracts or even dry eyes. Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, lutein and vitamin C. Eat foods such as leafy green vegetables like spinach or kale, oily fishes like salmon or tuna, citrus fruits and berries, and nonmeat proteins like nuts, eggs and beans.

3. QUIT SMOKING -- Follow through with this most important New

Year resolution! Smoking makes you more susceptible to macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage.

4. VISIT YOUR EYE DOCTOR -- Visiting your eye doctor is the

best way to protect your vision. Eye exams often catch eye diseases early that may not be symptomatic. If vision problems are caught early, they are much easier to treat. An eye exam not only helps to protect vision, it can uncover evidence of other diseases including diabetes or hypertension.

5. TAKE A BREAK FROM ELECTRONICS -- With increasing

use of computers, tablets and smart phones, there comes increasing computer eyestrain, blurry vision, trouble focusing, dry eyes and headaches. Remember the 20/20/20 rule; take a break every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

6. WEAR YOUR SAFETY EYEWEAR -- Whether you are at work, playing sports or doing projects around the house, put on safety eyewear. It only takes one accident to permanently lose your vison.

7. PRACTICE GOOD CONTACT LENSES WEAR -- Wearing your contact lenses beyond the recommended wearing time of the lenses can lead to eye infections that are not only painful but also have the potential to result in permanent vision loss. Change your contact lens case monthly and use fresh solution every night.

8. USE PRESCRIBED EYE MEDICATIONS AS DIRECTED -For example, if someone has glaucoma and does not use their drops as prescribed, pressures can rise and peripheral vision lost. This is vision that cannot be retrieved.

Celebrating 30 Years of Incorporation

If you live in Clemmons, NC you already know what makes it one of the top 10 communities in North Carolina to live. With the thriving businesses, advanced medical centers, and schools, it’s hard to believe the Village of Clemmons has only been incorporated 30 years.

HISTORY OF A SPECIAL COMMUNITY

Clemmons, NC was founded in 1802 by Peter Clemmons, who moved his wife and 14 children to the area from Delaware. Peter originally bought 216 acres for $542 and, although other settlers lived in the area, he developed Clemmons into a community. He opened a store in Clemmons and later his great grandson, Edwin T. Clemmons, worked as a stage and mail contractor, owning several stage lines based in Salem and running points including Clemmons, High Point, Asheville and Wytheville, VA. Clemmons, NC was a hub for travel by carriage to areas west including Asheville, NC. Edwin’s last and largest coach was purchased in 1872 and he named it the ‘Hattie Butner’ after his wife.

After the coming of the railroad in the 1870s, Edwin relocated his stagecoach business to Asheville, NC. Prior to his death, however, he returned to Clemmons and left funds in his will for the construction of Clemmons Moravian Church and a school. When he died, his widow donated the ‘Hattie Butner’ to the Wachovia Society. Fast forward to December 1986, when the Village of Clemmons was incorporated as a municipality. In 1993, the Wachovia Society permanently loaned the ‘Hattie Butner’ to the Village of Clemmons, leading to the town’s logo of a stagecoach. Today the Village of Clemmons encompasses about 12 square miles with a population of approximately 20,000. Clemmons, NC continues to grow with convenient shopping and employment as well as beautiful neighborhoods. There is something for everyone in Clemmons, NC!

A PLACE FOR ALL SEASONS

No matter what the season, there is always something to do in Clemmons, NC. In the summer, the poplar Village Farmers Market takes place at Village Hall, with people visiting from the surrounding areas for fresh farm goods. If you are looking for shopping and dining instead of ‘getting back to nature,’ Clemmons has everything you need, from boutiques, to larger retailers, to chain restaurants, to locally owned restaurants. With the addition of a new retail center featuring Publix as the anchor store, no doubt the choices to residents and visitors will be even more diverse.

If you stop anyone on the street in Clemmons and ask them what makes the town special, you will hear the same answer. The people who live and work in Clemmons are friendly and they know their neighbors. They know it is important to do business locally in order to support a community they love, and to make an effort to do so. Many refer to Clemmons as ‘the island’ and go out of their way to do any business, including doctor visits, dry cleaning, grocery shopping and household purchases in the village. Don’t be surprised if, after a few visits to a local restaurant or business, the owner or staff members know your name and ask about your family. It’s not just a ‘southern thing,’ but it’s also a Clemmons thing to make all who live and visit the area feel welcomed and know that the Village of Clemmons is a special place to live, work, shop and dine.

Village Facts The Village of Clemmons operates under the Council/Manager form of government.

Currently, with 23 employees, the budget is $7.2 million. Policy and legislative authority rest with an elected Council, composed of a Mayor and five Council members. The Mayor and one Council member are elected for a two-year term with the remainder of the Council elected to four-year terms. Clemmons, NC is fiscally conservative and believes in ‘doing more with less.’

The Village Council, among other responsibilities, passes ordinances, adopts an annual budget, appoints citizens to boards and committees, and hires a Village Manager.

The Village Manager is responsible for implementation of the Council’s policies and ordinances, supervision of the Village employees and overall maintenance of the day-to-day operation of the Village.

The tax rate for the Village of Clemmons is 11.5 cents per $100 of property tax value.

Average tax rate in North Carolina is 43 cents per $100 of property tax. Taxes pay for recycling, 13 deputies, planning board, zoning authority, marketing director, the new Village Hall and storm water utility and management.

The Village of Clemmons has no debt; the average debt per capita in North Carolina is $274 per person.

Employee per population in Clemmons, NC is 1/1000 with the state’s average of 1/103.

The Village of Clemmons over 30 years has had 7 mayors, 38 Council Members, 6 managers and 3 attorneys.

“Being a business owner has its challenges,” said Denise. “They say you’ll work harder for yourself than you will for anyone else. That’s very true. I work long hours, but thankfully, I love what I do!

The rewards outweigh any difficulties and, for me, as a stylist, plus I love the environment at Farrago. I developed this studio based on what kinds of services and atmosphere I wanted to see and what I thought my clients would enjoy. I’m very proud of the outcome! There’s something for everyone here.”

That is -- when the phones are put away! “I realize we live in a tech-dominated society,” said Denise, “but if I could start a movement, I would encourage anyone who is going to the salon to

go with the plan to indulge in an uninterrupted hour or so of pampering. That means -unplugging from text messages, emails and all the other demands on our time that come in the form of a smartphone. I know it’s hard to unplug -- my own phone is turned down but nearby in case I have a client who is running late or my son needs to get to me quickly. However, going to the salon is one of the few people-centric businesses that is ongoing and consistent. After all, a computer is never going to cut and color your hair!”

Denise has built her career on that personal touch and has forged lasting relationships that can only be forged through conversation. “Part of what I love about my job,” said Denise, “is spending time with people! I love people, and anyone who knows me knows I love to talk! It’s a chance to spend time together and emotionally connect during the process of cutting and styling.

Denise shares the story behind the name, Farrago: “Farrago” is defined as “a confused mixture; hodgepodge; medley.”

It simply means that we have several things available.

“Maybe it’s a generational thing,” Denise pondered as she continued, “The millennial generation is a delightful group of people, and I have such fun with them; however, I feel sorry for them in many ways.

So much of their communication takes place from behind a computer. They don’t have the same kinds of memories I have of making a salon appointment to enjoy and savor the experience as much as they do the outcome!”

Farrago is a community, with five stylists, as well as a massage therapist, a makeup artist and an esthetician.

Plus, the gift shop and art gallery are great places to unwind when you arrive, find a perfect gift while you’re in between treatments or buy something pretty for yourself just because you deserve it! After 40 years in business and two locations, 1502 Fabrics has helped some customers decorate their homes several times. “We make sure our customers

The marketplace has given us a better idea of our competition, and we have lowered our prices, online and in our stores, accordingly. We now ship fabric to 45 states and after the first of the year, we will hopefully have 2000-5000 products available online. With the busy lives that people have today, the convenience of ordering fabric online is good, for not only those in other states who don’t have fabric stores like 1502 Fabrics, but for local customers who just don’t have the time to drop by. Some order swatches to make sure they have found what they want, but others know a fabric they need and order without a swatch. I realized that for many, shopping online is the only way they can get the things they need, so our website, 1502fabrics.com, has become a great way to get our products to customers across the country,” Jim said. It’s also important to stay on top of the newest fabric and manufacturers, having the foresight to get those lines in the store when they become available.

“One of the hottest manufacturers right now is Revolution Performance Fabrics,” noted Jim. “They are located in Kings Mountain, NC and have an olefin that has a proprietary dye that is bleach cleanable. The internet has made the world of fabric very competitive, and companies have to be developing something that no one else has. The new year will also bring a line of bedding, duvets, coverlets, shams and bed skirts from French Laundry Home that is ready-made, but the customer will have fabrics to choose from, giving it a feel of being custom made. A few other things are in the works, and our customers will love the new additions coming soon into the new year.”

DAVIE DERMATOLOGY Celebrating 25 Years

Davie Dermatology is celebrating! They have been part of our community for 25 years and are still growing and going strong, but that’s certainly not a surprise to their many loyal patients and staff members. Dr. Suzanne Hess, the founding physician, began the practice as a standalone dermatologist in 1991. Dr. Hess initially had a two-exam room office with one staff member assisting her. In 1995, the practice moved to a larger facility and in 2008, moved to its present location. The present-day site was selected for its tranquil atmosphere, which is convenient to the city, but not a part of the bustle of city life. In 2014, the MedSpa @ Kinderton opened as part of the practice to address patients’ interests in cosmetic services.

Dr. Hess credits her dad as her biggest influence regarding how she interacts with team members, patients, and the community at large. “It is a privilege to practice medicine,” shared Dr. Hess. Her dad, Dr. Charles Powell, was a family practitioner and made house calls throughout Madison County, on horseback if the roads were too bad for a car. “He was the Marcus Welby of the community, and he loved his patients,” she said. “He taught me to treat everyone with dignity and respect and do the best you could for each person. He taught that learning was continual.” These lessons served Davie Dermatology well – in 2016 they were voted the #1 practice

by Winston-Salem Journal Readers Choice Awards. Dr. Hess enjoys long-standing relationships with patients from all surrounding counties, who often continue their skin care needs with her even after moving to other parts of the country.

One of Dr. Hess’ long-term patients, Gray P., also designed and leased her the first office space years ago. Lori T., another long-term patient, shared, “I’ve been with Dr. Hess since she opened her first office. With my fair skin and red hair, she’s treated all my skin concerns. The practice has certainly grown, but the quality of personal care for her patients is constant.”

Dr. Tracie Bryson joined the practice in 2002. A mutual mentor in medical school encouraged Dr. Bryson to contact Dr. Hess, and they found a connection within the first ten minutes of their conversation. Dr. Bryson indicated that the physicians make a wonderful team. Their philosophy regarding their care of patients and their impact on the community works beautifully. As Dr. Bryson shared, “I love what I do. I always wanted to join a practice, and I am thankful that Suzanne began this practice. We are all on the same page and are blessed to care for the people of this community.”

Dr. Kelly Barham joined the practice in 2007. Dr. Barham was one of Dr. Hess’ students in 2002 and recalled telling her mom about the experience. “If I go into dermatology and stay in this area,” she told her, “I want to work with Dr. Hess.” Dr. Barham is also family-centered and shared that she frequently starts a discussion with “If you were my (mother, sister, brother, etc.), this is what I’d do.” She believes, as do Drs. Hess and Bryson, in treating the person, not the condition.

Each person is treated individually and with the level of care that you’d use for your own family members.

Amanda, Triage Coordinator, and Elaine, Insurance & Billing Specialist, have 20+ years each with the practice.

Both recall years of steady growth and share that the management team treats employees as well as they treat patients. As they say, “Davie Dermatology is a family-oriented environment. We are a team and have a committee that focuses on giving back to the community (Red Cross, food drives, etc.). Family milestones are important and shared with the rest of the team.”

The MedSpa focuses on helping individuals look their best with two certified medical estheticians – Dawn Hill and Jessica Shea. A variety of services are offered, including chemical peels, micro needling, radiofrequency, body contouring and laser devices.

The goal is to “whisper, not scream” with a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.

I like “new!” It feels fresh and clean. “New” has no baggage, no memories to beat me around. It’s untainted by yesterday’s failures and life’s regrets. “New” offers me a blank slate to start again.

I like “new!”

Given the astonishing opportunities afforded by “new,” why is it that we often use it so feebly? Think about it. What do we female creatures do when we dislike the reflection in the mirror?

We go shopping! Surely, getting a “new” outfit will bring confidence to meet life’s demands. A “new” hairstyle will rid us of life’s stifling monotony, right? I’ll lose weight.

That’s got to help. It’s exactly what I need . . . a “new” me.

There’s just one big problem with this solution. Have you noticed how quickly the “new” wears off? Within weeks, we’re right back where we started . . . a predictably overwhelmed life that leaves us feeling blah all over again!

It’s time we start using “new” in ways that truly work for us.

After all, we stand at the brink of a brand “new” year. While new clothes and looks are fun, we need more than this to create authentic “new” in our lives, a kind that generates lasting change. We need some forward movement with a new view!

I can’t help but think of an old friend, Paul. Here’s a guy who, despite his extraordinary brilliance and stature in the community, made some dreadful choices he lived to regret. Paul desperately wanted to change his story. He longed to get past his past. Ever been there? There was just one monumental problem. Paul’s harassing memories played like a continuous movie reel in his head.

Sleepless nights became his new normal. Paul’s past hounded him without reprieve as frustration festered and shame surged.

When Paul finally hit the wall, he had an encounter with the One who is all about forward movement. In fact, God’s dreams for your future are exponentially greater than you could dream for yourself. They were conceived even before you were!

This life-changing encounter alleviated Paul’s agony, providing a fresh perspective. Paul famously penned, “Forgetting those things which are behind me, I press on!”

(Philippians 3:13) For you see, when he realized God wasn’t holding Paul’s past over him as punishment, Paul decided he would stop dwelling on it, too.

He dropped the “never-enough” mentality that crippled his ability to live today and hope toward tomorrow. Paul pressed on to the goal of his life found in the One who dreams big for us.

You may wonder, “How do I stop dwelling on what I can’t change?

How do I alleviate regrets that play persistently in my head? How do I experience joy that ‘new’ can offer with my weighty baggage of yesterday’s pain and guilt?”

It’s not as difficult as it seems, I promise.

It’s funny. Somehow we think God doesn’t know the package He’s getting. Surely, He doesn’t know what He’s signing up for when He takes us in. The truth is, God knows precisely what He is getting.

He simply believes in the power of His love more than the power of our failures!

Hear me tell you that the God who adores you is continuously obsessed with your future. In fact, He does not relate to you based on who you are now, but on who He knows you can be! Wow! How many people in your life offer that invaluable gift? Most people will not let you forget what you did wrong at a particular point in time.

God will not let you forget what He knows you can do right! He speaks life into us and continually seeks to remind us of who we can be!

Give yourself a gift this “new” year. Forget those things that are behind you, those things you can’t change. You can’t start enjoying the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one. Choose to press on! Choose forward movement that focuses on what can be. It’s a perfect time for “new” in you! Let’s press on together. Forward, March!

Design Is in The Details January is the month of tying up loose ends from one year and looking towards the New Year to come. For me, it is planning all the changes for June DeLugas Interiors’ store and showroom as well as dreaming of what we are going to do that is awe inspiring for our customers, clients and retail shoppers. January is also the month that we suggest to everyone to start planning for his or her spring projects. Your plans need to include a designer or professional. We like to take our time and plan the best solution that exceeds your expectations. That plan might be a kitchen or bath remodel or new furniture, art, lamps and accessories. You might have in mind that you need to update with all new paint colors throughout the house. Whatever your thoughts are, it is best to call a professional like us to help with your project.

Our design firm will sit with you and take down all the information needed to create your dream. We start with a CAD drawing with the best possible layout to scale. If it is a kitchen, we also start with the CAD drawing, adding elements of design such as granite counter tops, new plumbing accessories, tile back splashes, cabinets (style and color), hardware for the cabinets, paint colors and furnishings, if needed. Once our client approves the plan, we provide the costing estimates and, if we are lucky, obtain the “okay” to start. We hire and schedule the subcontractors. For most bathroom and kitchen remodels, it is a three-month effort. Now, you must take into account that the inspectors have a mind of their own, and the suppliers may not have the product you have selected which means the project can be delayed while waiting for the product of choice to come in.

I am finding that granite and hard surfaces, such as quartz, are the hardest part of the job, as there does not seem to be as many choices as we had a few years ago – or, I might say what we really want within budget. With our past several clients, we put the granite or quartz countertop on hold very early in the process. We also want the client to know that planning in advance is most important. With recent projects, a vendor called and said they dropped one of the quartz slabs we had selected after driving to Raleigh to put it on reserve months in advance. They also informed her that they did not have anymore and could not find a supplier to replace the same pattern. Sometimes you just must regroup and find alternatives. Recently, we had two clients tell us that they don’t know how we do this every day. In other words, without a professional helping, you might get a bit frustrated.

We love what we do and appreciate the finished look. Since we understand the process and want to alleviate the headaches for you, we offer a turnkey option for your future remodel. A note to remember, it will be great in the end and worth the trouble and mess you had to go through to get there.

The Crosby Pub & Restaurant

BY ROSEY The Crosby Pub is tucked away at the Village Inn Event Center in Clemmons.

Some people may assume they can’t go to the restaurant if they aren’t a guest of the hotel, but that is incorrect. The Crosby Pub is open to the public, and I’m here to tell you why you need to go. Now. Not only do they offer great service, but the food is exceptional. It took me a day to snap out of my food coma, but I’m ready to revisit the memories of a phenomenal dining experience at The Crosby Pub, and hopefully, inspire you to visit them yourself!

First, let’s talk drinks. The bar manager, David Saltiel, and bartender Gabriel Johnson outdid themselves with winter-themed drinks that are dangerously delicious. The Cinnamon Toast is made with fireball and rumchata. The White Chocolate Martini didn’t last long with its decadent combination of white chocolate liquor, vanilla vodka, cinnamon swirl, and cocoa rum, polished off with a hazelnut cookie.

Homemade Eggnog was divine. The adult-version of the Crosby Pub’s Hot Chocolate was rich and creamy, topped with mini-marshmallows. I was delighted with the Winter Coffee prepared with Kahlúa, Bailey’s, white chocolate liquor, and vanilla vodka. It took my favorite caffeine fix to a new level!

It’s always a pleasure to see Executive Chef Araceli Cabrera, and I met two new members of her team, Assistant Chef Joshua Allen and Cook Antonio Roman. I was invited to sample the new menu available on January 1st, and boy did they outdo themselves!

They brought us an enormous, homemade Chimichanga. Stuffed with chicken and covered with a rich cheese sauce and seasoned with jalapenos, this is a dish to dream about. What was surprising, though was how light it was – bursting with flavor, without being heavy! We also tried the new Kids’ Mini Quesadillas… the classic favorite every kid loves and every parent is happy to give them (anything other than chicken fingers, right?) We were also served homemade flour tortilla Tacos, with the option of beef or chicken. You can’t go wrong with a really awesome taco! And since there’s nothing that leaves this kitchen that isn’t homemade, including the tortillas, we had Nachos! Layers of classic flavors, including salsa, sour cream, and avocado. YUM! The Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches arrived and were excellent. We had the chicken fried, but there’s an option for grilled chicken, too. Either has a fantastic spice that will challenge your taste buds. I absolutely loved them and the fried chicken wasn’t heavy or greasy. Both

were served with super delicious Curly Fries!

And really, who doesn’t love a great curly fry?

Few things get me as excited as brinner… you know, breakfast for dinner? First, Chef Araceli presented us with French Toast. I am a bit of a French Toast snob and have a very particular way I like it. This was the way. Accompanied by authentic syrup, it would be a great way to end a day! We also tried a Traditional Breakfast Plate of eggs cooked to order, toast, and bacon or sausage. Again, I love breakfast for dinner, but a restaurant reviewer must persevere… so I had to move on…

We were brought two of the thickest, juiciest burgers I have ever eaten. The Crosby Burger is your classic hamburger with lettuce, tomato, and onions… a meat lover’s dream! And I couldn’t get enough of the Mushroom Swiss Burger! The mushrooms were perfectly cooked and seasoned with the melted Swiss cheese. Both came with fresh cut French Fries that were the perfect blend of crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside.

I was to the point of bursting, but when they arrived with paninis, I made room and sampled the new Ham and Cheese Panini (hot and savory ham with awesomely gooey Swiss cheese!) and the Turkey Reuben Panini. The homemade sauerkraut added that perfect and distinctive flavor that makes a Reuben a favorite!

Finally, I was in for an education when they brought out Jamaican Wings. These aren’t the spicy wings you normally think of, though it should be stated that they are not without their own powerful flavor. The secret is in the Jamaica Flower. This tropical blossom is dried and soaked in water. It’s the water that is used to make the sauce. Delicious.

The Crosby Pub has done a lot to set up fun, nightly specials. Monday night is Nacho Night… Tuesday is Taco Night… Wednesday is Panini Night… Thursday is Classic Burger Night… and Friday is Wing Night. Whichever night you go, you’re not going to be disappointed, I promise. Be sure to tell them that Rosey sent you!

You’re Never Too Old to Face Your Fears

“That which you think you cannot do, you MUST do.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt “Is your mom going on the ropes course?” I heard my daughter’s friend ask. I could feel beads of sweat forming. “Ohhhhh, nooooo,” I thought.

“Nope, I don’t like heights, definitely not the plan.”

Her friend said, “My mom would never do that.

She’s too old.” My head snapped up. Wait! What did she say?!?! My daughter (who is awesome) said, “Well, my mom’s not old.” And there it was.

I was going to conquer the ropes course… or die trying! It was indeed harrowing, but I nailed it.

Like many people, I have a fear of heights (acrophobia). Fear is normal, even helpful in potentially dangerous situations. Fear activates our “fight or flight” response systems. It’s an adaptive response whose purpose is to keep us safe. That must be the reason I never wanted to skydive. I mean, seriously, why would you want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?! But I digress. Fears, like anything else, only become a problem when they impede the enjoyment of new experiences, or even your daily life.

Fear can be non-specific or situational. But when a fear is associated with a specific object, class of objects, or situation, and is so intense as to be overwhelming, that is referred to as a phobia.

Phobias are subjective, and their consequent reactions vary from person to person. Mild reactions include avoidance, mild anxiety, rapid heart rate and perspiration. At the other extreme, phobias can be so traumatic as to cause emotional meltdowns, panic attacks and emotional paralysis (shut down). Although the object of fear itself poses little or no actual threat to the individual, it is perceived as a very real danger.

There may come a time when you find your fears are limiting or prohibitive and you are missing out.

The good news is that you are never too old to face your fears. The first thing to do is identify your phobia(s). Here are a few…

These are just some of literally hundreds of phobias. You probably recognized many and identified with a few. Most everyone is afraid of something in varying degrees. And although they are common, most will not cause distress or disrupt your everyday life. For example, if you are afraid of insects (entomophobia), you’re in luck! Most insects are dormant in the wintertime. Are you afraid of needles (trypanophobia) or dentists (dentophobia)? Most people only see them once or twice a year. In that case, your phobias may not be a great concern.

If, however, your fear is of technology (technophobia) or making or taking calls (telephobia), to the extent that it is overwhelming…well, you may need to work on that. Most phobias can be easily managed by yourself by gradually and repeatedly exposing yourself to your fear while practicing self-soothing or relaxation techniques. These include soothing music, counting, aromatherapy, self-massage or just walking it off. Take it slowly and be patient with yourself. As you expose yourself to your fears, repeatedly and methodically remind yourself that you are okay. And give yourself an ‘atta boy.’ Gradually it will become easier until your fear is no longer a disruption. With this new sense of empowerment, you’ll be ready to make the most out of life!

All three women were matriarchs in their respective families. “Growing up in Brooklyn, the houses were small, but it wasn’t unusual for 10-20 people to come to our grandmothers’ homes for Sunday dinners,” said Tony. “And, in an Italian family, Sunday dinners aren’t simply a meal… they are an event!”

Where Three Grandmothers Are at the Heart of Every Bite

It’s no secret that grandmothers are special…and whether you’re Italian or not, you know that Italian grandmothers have a reputation for feeding their families really amazing food. So, when it came to naming their restaurant, it’s little wonder that the Maresca family wanted to pay homage to the three grandmothers that fed them, nurtured them and inspired a family business.

Tre Nonne is Italian for “three grandmothers.” Owned by Tony Maresca along with his wife, Alice, and sister, Debby, Tre Nonne Italian Restaurant offers authentic Italian cuisine that has been passed down and perfected through their family for generations.

It started with Tony and Debby’s grandmothers, both of whom hailed from Naples. Ann Vitale (their maternal grandmother) and Alice Maresca (their paternal grandmother) immigrated at a young age, but even though they grew up in America, both women embraced the old-world traditions in the kitchen. Alice’s grandmother, Alice DeLuca, hailed from Calabria and, like Tony and Debby’s grandmothers, brought traditional Italian cooking techniques from her native land.

These were hardworking women who spent their lives caring for their families and passing on the values and traditions that the Maresca’s still hold very dear. “My wife Alice’s grandmother, Alice DeLuca, worked third shift in a donut factory to support her family,” said Tony. “Our grandmothers worked long hours in a supermarket and a hat shop, respectively, and they demonstrated hard work and perseverance. We are all very proud to honor their legacy in our restaurant which has been so heavily influenced by these amazing women.”

It wasn’t a simple matter of making sure there were enough place settings. These were the moments when people shared conversation, had debates and spent time together. “We were in tight quarters, and money was tight,” said Tony, “but we were also a tight family.”

Indeed, a traditional Italian Sunday dinner is the foundation of the Tre Nonne business model. Good food. Good conversation. A time for family. A time for friends.

The Marescas have entrusted family recipes to him, as well as Chef Carmine Iooz. Both worked to perfect the recipes while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the dish. It’s a new year. You are probably working on your resolutions. They could include eating better, working out more, being more organized or managing your time better. You have a to-do list that’s a mile long, and there are some things on there you just don’t want to do. Small, little tasks that need to be done, but you don’t want to take the time or the energy to accomplish them. I’ve been there. Most of the smaller tasks weren’t difficult, but I still pushed those things to the bottom of the list until I was forced to do them. Then I learned the two-minute rule. This rule was first introduced by time management consultant and author David Allen. It states if something takes less than two minutes, do it now. This is also helpful if you want to get in the habit of doing something. All it takes is a two-minute start. This strategy can put an end to procrastinating and help you successfully complete tasks.

According to Allen, a lot of people procrastinate because they don’t want to take the next action to start a task or simply don’t know what their next action should be. Plan out in your mind how you are going to finish a task, breaking it up into small steps. Then, if you can get even one step done in a short amount of time (two minutes), at least start it. Sometimes this is all it takes to keep going and complete it.

Once I started using the two-minute rule, I was surprised at how much I could accomplish in a short amount of time. For example, if I needed to send a quick email, put away clothes, or simply wash a dish, I could get it done efficiently. In the long run, you’ll end up saving more time than you would by constantly putting off the task. The second part of the rule involves starting a new habit. This concept involves the bigger picture of beginning a goal. Any task or project can be started in two minutes.

Allen based the rule off Isaac Newton’s theory that objects at rest tend to stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion. When a person just starts a goal, no matter how big or small, they will continue to work on that goal. For example, if you need to write a report, just spend two minutes and write a few sentences to get started, or if you need to read a book, read a little bit for two minutes. Before you know it you’ll have written a paragraph or read several chapters. Usually, when a person begins something, it’s easier to continue doing it.

Another interesting part of the rule is it allows people to see the possibilities of what can happen when they start a project or task. Once started, people will tend to get excited to finish it or cross it off their to-do list. Getting started can be the most important part of a project. The focus is all about taking action.

This rule can also be applied to exercising. Something we all love to hear, right? Recent studies have shown that short, intense bursts of exercise are as effective as longer workouts. They help improve a person’s health with little time commitment.

The purpose of the two-minute rule is to improve productivity and get more things accomplished in a shorter amount of time. Some things might end up taking longer than two minutes to complete, but it will still be easier to do now than putting it off. Don’t you love the feeling of checking things off your to-do list and clearing the task from your mind? Start using this rule to decrease stress and have more time on your hands. The two-minute rule may not work for everyone. But it doesn’t hurt to give it a try. The next time you are working on that mile long to-do list, prioritize your tasks and see what you can get done in two minutes.

THE CHANGING RETIREMENT LANDSCAPE

Make a Great First Impression The care you take to make the entrance to your home welcoming will make a great first impression on those who enter… and who knows? They may just want to linger a bit.

How can your home’s entryway make a good first impression?

My husband, Ed, and I just celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary the 28th of December. A mutual friend set us up on a blind date. When he came to pick me up for the date, his appearance and his manners made a great first impression… I wasn’t so sure of his last name, though and thought he had made it up. His driver’s license proved he hadn’t. Yes, it was love at first sight, and five months later I became his wife.

Not long ago I had the opportunity to enter a business I had never been to before.

Maybe it’s because I had my “decorator eyes” on… my first impression wasn’t a good one! The pictures hanging in the entry were very faded, the furniture was too small for this grand space and the live plant, on the console table, was not only scraggly but also trying to grow in an unattractive container. While this may be a great place to do business, my first impression was not a good one.

First impressions happen in a matter of seconds. When guests come to visit, the entryway or foyer is the space that will introduce them to your home. Is it welcoming? Will they want to “Just come in and sit”?

• Start with a rug. Choose a durable material that not only protects the floor, but also minimizes the dirt being tracked in from the outside, and coordinates with your décor.

• Create a focal point. Your entry needs something grand… maybe a beautiful framed mirror or a favorite piece of art. If space permits, hang art over a console table or pretty chest. Some foyers are large enough to use a buffet or dresser as a foyer table, or even a round table in the center.

• Display accessories on the entry table: a few beautifully framed family photos, small artwork, a small box or tray for car keys, a stylish lamp, flowers or a green plant are good suggestions.

• Hang a large mirror only if it will reflect something beautiful. Mirrors add sparkle and create the illusion of a larger space, and they are wonderful for last minute hair and wardrobe checks before heading out the door.

• Decorate with wall art to add interest and personality. Examples: a gorgeous oil painting, decorative plates, a wrought-iron piece, sconces,

a family portrait, a quilt, old hats, antique musical instruments, framed maps of your favorites places to visit, an over-sized clock, etc. Be creative, and your guests will know your interest and your ‘art’ will be a great conversation starter.

• Welcome guests with a comfy chair or bench in your foyer. It will not only provide a place to sit but also a place for guests to put down their purses or coats. Add a throw pillow for a splash of color.

• Choose either real or silk plants to bring life to your foyer. Place on a foyer table or use a large tree or plant to add interest to a corner.

American Heart Association Profile:

The pain began in her jaw but soon spread to her ears. Debbie Lentz wasn’t overly alarmed, but the discomfort she experienced in June 2007 finally prompted her to see her primary care physician. That’s when the Clemmons resident learned the pain in her face had nothing to do with her jaw.

“That was my wake-up call that something was terribly wrong,” Lentz said. “My general practitioner immediately sent me to a cardiologist and a week later I was having openheart surgery.”

Lentz had been living with a 95 percent blockage in her main artery. That jaw pain, as it turns out, was a telltale symptom of heart disease.

“I was at a very high risk of having a heart attack, but being mindful about my symptoms possibly saved me from having a heart attack,” Lentz said.

Every 80 seconds, one woman is killed by heart disease and stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

That’s one in three deaths among women each year.

Too often, women miss the warning signs. Lentz almost did. “I never had chest pain,” she said. “I had shortage of breath and extreme fatigue, but not to the point where I thought I was having heart problems.”

She had her surgery at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and continued to visit Novant Health Cardiology Winston-Salem for her follow-up. “It’s important to stay up-to-date on checkups because if you don’t have your heart, nothing else really matters,” she said.

When Lentz reflects on her surgery, she says it certainly wasn’t easy, but the care she received made the whole process easier to accept. “After the surgery, I immediately felt better because I could breathe better. Novant Health’s cardiac rehabilitation program was certainly very much a part of my recovery going as smoothly as it did.”

Amazingly, Lentz was only in the hospital for five days and returned to work in three months. “My family, friends, and church community gave me tremendous support,” she said. The experience, she said, changed her more than physically.

“When you go through a life-changing event, it makes you look at life in a different way,” she said.

“The most important lesson that I’ve learned,” Lentz said, “is that it’s extremely important to listen to the symptoms that you are experiencing, especially for women. We will blame our symptoms on everything in the world until it’s too late. Be very conscious of dealing with any symptoms you are experiencing. Please, women – just do what you need to do because it can save your life.”

Lentz recently retired after 45 years at Piedmont Federal Savings Bank. With her newfound time, she hopes to get back into knitting and regularly attend water aerobics and Zumba classes, and spend more time with her grandchildren.

“I love to travel,” she added. “My husband and I will hopefully be visiting the beach.”

Family history potentially played a role in her condition, Lentz said, with both of her parents receiving open heart surgery and her father, unfortunately, losing his life to a heart attack.

Lentz’s history has inspired her to become an avid volunteer with the American Heart Association, participating in walks and Go Red for Women’s National Wear Red Day. February is American Heart Month, an initiative led by the American Heart Association that encourages women to know their risk factors

and take precautions to improve their health in the fight against heart disease. National Go Red Day will take place on February 3, 2017, and is sponsored by Novant Health.

Forsyth Medical Center was recognized by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2010 with a 3-star rating for providing consistent excellent cardiac surgery outcomes. This honor places the hospital in the top 12 percent of all cardiac surgery programs in the nation.

Forsyth Medical Center’s cardiac rehabilitation program offers patients with heart disease a team of experienced cardiac nurses and specialists that create an individualized and closely monitored exercise plan.

The program includes exercise therapy, nutrition education and counseling, psychosocial education and counseling, and smoking cessation and support.

Practical Depression Coping Skills

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “In 2014, around 15.7 million adults age 18 or older in the U.S. had experienced at least one major depressive episode in the last year.”

The following statistics are even more troubling: • At any point in time, “3 to 5 percent of adults suffer from major depression.”

• Adults are not the only ones affected by depression, as “2 out of 100 young children and 8 out of 100 teens may have serious depression.”

• The institute explains that “anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population.”

What exactly defines depression? The three types of depressive disorders include major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder—and these can occur with any of the anxiety disorders. Perhaps the most troubling aspect is that studies show that over 80% of people with symptoms of clinical depression, are not receiving specific treatment for their treatment.

With this type of information, what exactly can be done to help those suffering? While professional treatment is first recommended, there are a few things one can do to help cope with depressive disorders. Read on for eight practical depression coping skills.

MONITOR YOUR LIFESTYLE. A person suffering from depression can be easily influenced by their surroundings. Making a few lifestyle changes—taking on a new hobby, eating healthy, working out, and so on—can boost your mood and help alleviate many of your symptoms, including low self-esteem.

EXPRESS YOURSELF IN WRITING.

It is vital to relieve stress by being open about your thoughts, feelings, and concerns in your writing—and stress management is an important part of living well with depression.

Make sure to be honest about your feelings and thoughts. You’ll be surprised by how good it feels to release pent up emotions on paper.

MAINTAIN A SET SCHEDULE. Sticking

to a healthy and regular routine is very helpful for people with depression. Make sure to schedule at least one to two activities that you enjoy doing every day. When a set schedule is put into effect, you can rest easy, knowing what to expect.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES ARE A MUST!

Even though it can be difficult to go to events and socialize, this can be incredibly helpful.

Social connections can help keep you from spiraling downward into deeper depression and becoming isolated and alone with your thoughts. Grab a friend and go to the movies, share a brisk walk, or just catch up—it is guaranteed to lift your spirits.

FIT IN TIME FOR SLEEP. People with depression often have noticeable irregular sleep patterns—either sleeping too much or not enough. It is vital to go to sleep and wake up on a regular schedule. Feeling run-down will exacerbate your symptoms of depression and make it more difficult to be social, work out and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

PRACTICE RELAXATION TECHNIQUES. A daily relaxation practice

can help relieve symptoms of depression, reduce stress, and help boost feelings of joy.

Try yoga, meditation, deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation.

GET OUTSIDE! Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues may all be eased by simply spending some time in the great outdoors—especially when you combine it with exercise. Grab your sneakers and hit the trails; a simple walk outside can be the first easy step.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DON’T BE AFRAID TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP. Working with a therapist is the most

important part of successfully managing depression. Psychotherapy will focus on helping people adjust their lifestyle in ways that are possible, minimize their stress, and cope with the stressors that come with life.

Among the issues that you can address together are how to improve your self-esteem, practice stress management, and switch from negative to positive thinking.

I absolutely adore the month of January.

Maybe it’s because I love a new beginning.

I get excited about the thought of getting a fresh start and having a clean slate. I admit, each December I like to spend a little time analyzing my life and thinking about how the past year has gone.

I like to focus on what I love about my life, and I try to identify positive changes I can incorporate in the New Year.

I used to make New Year’s resolutions. The older I get, the more I realize the pressure of trying to keep resolutions doesn’t seem to work for me.

There’s no need to put a label on it. Even though I love my life and feel good about the choices I’ve made, I recognize there is always room for improvement.

A New Year, A New Opportunity

I know you’re busy, and I get that you probably spend a lot of time rushing around from one activity to the next. However, don’t miss the opportunity a new year brings.

Don’t be afraid to make changes in your life and be willing to try new things.

If there are areas in your life where you would like to make a few changes, January is a good time to start. You can create the life you want. It just might take a little work.

The more effort and energy I put into living the life I want, the more satisfied and content I am with what I’m getting. If something doesn’t feel right, I think about it and try to figure out a different approach.

Living is an art. A skill. A craft.

Don’t be afraid to erase a few lines or draw a new picture in your own life.

An artist is constantly changing and growing his or her work. The same holds true for life.

Mold your life into the picture you want, give yourself the freedom to figure out what direction you want to move in and enjoy the process of seeing it take shape.

Helping You Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

BY MEGAN TAYLOR It’s a goal many people have – maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes that can be easier said than done. But, there are ways to add eating right and being active into your busy schedule. Since its opening in 1997, Fitness Edge in Clemmons has been dedicated to helping people reach their full potential with fitness goals. Owner David Jablonski shares his top 11 tips for balancing health and fitness.

1. Start your day with a balanced meal with good carb and protein sources. Fitness Edge helps teach people the best choices for starting their day right.

2. Always try to do some type of exercise each day. Even if it’s only 15 to 20 minutes, it’s definitely better than doing none. We can structure cardio and workout programs around your schedule, Jablonski advised.

3. Setting up a workout schedule that works for you is sometimes half the battle. Create one that is doable for you and don’t overreach. Set realistic goals for yourself.

4. Fitness Edge is a personal training studio.

The bonus of having a personal trainer is that he or she can create a program that actually works for you. We adjust the

workouts to fit your schedule and physical limitations. Also, we can teach you the proper way to perform exercises and use the equipment.

5. Not knowing how to properly lift weights, use equipment, and complete exercises could cause you to harm yourself, making it harder to work out. Therefore it’s a good idea to schedule a time and meet with a personal trainer from the studio who can coach you and help you learn the proper lifting techniques and other skills.

6. Seeing is believing when it comes to measuring a person’s progress. At Fitness Edge, we take different types of measurements as you work out. These include a skin-fold caliper for body fat.

This test calculates the amount of fat in 3 to 9 areas of the body. The caliper pinches a layer of skin, not the muscle.

Also, tape measurements are used.

However, we have found one of the best tests is before and after pictures.

7. Not only does exercise help with physical health, but it also helps with mental health. It can build a person’s self-confidence and provide continued motivation. Plus, it can be a great stress reliever, as well as a bonding activity between people.

8. Sometimes people struggle with eating healthy while eating out. Many times they don’t realize there are healthy choices at restaurants. Our trainers help show their clients how to make better food choices, especially when they aren’t eating at home.

9. People often believe the more cardio, the better. That statement isn’t always true. This is where the 80/20 rule comes in - 80% of weight loss is controlled by proper nutrition, and 20% comes from exercising.

10. Motivation and sticking to a goal can be hard to do. “I’ve been told many times if I, as a personal trainer, wasn’t waiting for someone, they would have never shown up,” said Jablonski. Sometimes it’s the commitment and accountability a person needs to keep going. This accountability can come from another person, such as a friend or personal trainer.

11. Always remember that it’s never too late to start, no matter how old you are. This is probably one of the most important things. It doesn’t have to be the first of the year or a New Year’s resolution. Anytime is a good time to start maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Life can get busy with your family, friends, work, and other responsibilities. But one of your responsibilities should be exercising and eating right. Start small and keep adding new healthy habits to your routine.

What other time of year could you fully invest in the pursuit of new leisure activities? Creativity combined with a willingness to try something new this year may result in a new lifelong hobby.

Whether you need personal time or small group participation, hobbies can help revitalize your energy levels while lowering stress. No matter a person’s age, we all can learn new gifts or skills that can teach us something wonderful about ourselves.

Learn a Language: French, Italian, or perhaps sign language.

There are available resources online to help you attain your goals. Many computerized programs are designed with a young child in mind, and there are tutorials to educate all ages and levels of proficiency; therefore, don’t think you cannot learn a language. Of course, you can! Your dedication and time will help you become a skilled speaker, listener, and reader.

Audio Books & Podcasts: How many hours a day do you find yourself walking or sitting without a work responsibility? You will be amazed at the amount of time in which you could be listening to something constructive, such as a novel or podcast.

Whether you are driving home, preparing a meal, folding laundry, or vacuuming, the effort can include some form of educational experience. Most iPhones offer apps in which you can download books or podcasts directly to your phone. Begin a journal to tabulate the number of titles you’ve listened to this month or year. Happy listening!

Genealogy: Family gatherings often inspire us to look further into our ancestors’ history. If you have ever wondered if the stories are true, there are numerous ways to find answers.

It begins with one name, a birth date and year of death.

It may take time to reveal that one needle in a haystack. While information is available at notable genealogy websites, with a cost, you may also find information in a hometown courthouse, library, and cemetery. Call or visit elder members of the family.

In preparation, stock your pantries and cupboards with food staples such as flour, rice, a variety of beans and noodles, and pre-packaged broths to eliminate trips to the grocery store. In advance, research reviews to see how others eliminated or substituted ingredients. This winter could ease your comfort in making homemade breads and soups, stews and side dishes. While you are content to be in a warm kitchen, think about tweaking a recipe for sauces, for instance, and freeze pouches in sizeable portions. Just remember, the gardening season is around the corner. Start planning or spring on how you can utilize your favorite vegetables in new and exciting meals. Bon appétit!

Rekindle or Discover a Hobby: While it may feel beneficial to spend days curled beneath blankets sipping mugs of our favorite hot cocoas and teas, we can expand our horizons when we include new passions and interests to keep our mind active. Lauren Rauck Komanski: Talents & Goals

up at four in the morning to exercise, and school, with endless clinic duty and classes. Her love for the sport increased and she signed a pro contract, though, she was still hesitant to dedicate herself to cycling unreservedly.

There is a difference between having a talent and achieving a goal. You may have a goal but feel you do not have the talent to achieve it, or you may have a talent, but you feel that the goal is unrealistic. Lauren Rauck Komanski has a talent, and this is the story of how, time and again, she defied expectations on her path toward her seemingly unrealistic goal.

Lauren’s career as a professional cyclist began less than five years ago when her parents gave her a road bike. This was after graduating from college, where she had pursued Division I athletics intensely but had decided to step away to pursue a career as a veterinarian.

She was unconvinced about giving herself to cycling when her parents presented the gift, and she was prepared to sell the bike.

Then she got an invitation to the Olympic Training Center. Intent on her prospective veterinary career, she decided to juggle the responsibilities. Her life was split between cycling, waking

Even in the midst of a grueling schedule, Lauren could always find rest and solace in cycling. “I loved getting to spend time solely focused on cycling,” she recalls. “It was a chance to disconnect and reset.” Finally, she was invited to one of the most prominent cycling teams in the US: TWENTY16.

Lauren put her career on hold and accepted the offer to join TWENTY16 and also race for the US National team. Lauren participated in some of the most challenging races in the world, from Europe to New Zealand, and rode alongside Megan Guarnier, US Olympian and the number one cyclist in the world. Lauren jumped at the opportunity to arrive early to a team camp and train with threetime Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong, who began working with Lauren that year and would be her coach for the rest of the time she was racing.

It was time to truly dedicate her time and energy to cycling. She was on the path to achieving an arguably unrealistic and potentially incredible goal.

A series of successes defined the next year of Lauren’s life. She raced the Tour of California, standing on the podium every day, and proudly pulled on the yellow jersey, marking her as the overall race leader going into the final day of racing. She notes that performing for a home crowd and standing on the podium at the WinstonSalem Cycling Classic was icing on the cake to her victories. She finished the year by racing for the USA at the World Championships in 2015 and helped the USA win their first medal in the road race in 20 years (women or men). At the beginning of 2016, Lauren signed with a new team and started the year at a race in South America in January.

Thirty minutes into a race in San Luis, Argentina, Lauren was involved in a serious bike crash. Incredibly, she finished the race and continued to compete for six days following the accident. Little did she know that she had severely broken her hand. She impatiently waited for her hand to heal and, two days after the cast was removed, she flew to Europe and raced again. Her first competition was on the gravel roads of northern Italy. Although she continued to race the cobblestone filled Spring Classics throughout Europe, needless to say, her hand did not take the jarring journey well.

She experienced nerve damage and was forced to step away from competitive cycling.

Her veterinary dream still in her heart, Lauren made a smooth transition back to Winston-Salem to begin her long-awaited career at Village Way Veterinary Hospital near Tanglewood Park. Lauren can now look back on her enormous successes in cycling all over the world while honing another talent. She is enthusiastic about her career at Village Way and is thrilled at the initiation of downtown Winston-Salem’s National Cycling Center. She can now share the cycling experience with her family, who has pushed her to success through the tough times.

As it turns out, Lauren Rauck Komanski was capable of not only honing the talent and achieving the goal of becoming an incredible cyclist – she was also able to pursue and accomplish the goal of becoming a veterinarian. Lauren has shown incredible perseverance and presence of mind as she has followed both goals simultaneously and is an inspiration to the talented, yet possibly hesitant, in our state and around the world.

Oh, My! You Look Like You’ve Lost Weight!

BY ELIZABETH JENKINS If you’ve ever made this statement to someone before… this public service announcement is for you. Please, do everyone a favor and refrain from ever doing it again. Why? First and foremost, because you don’t know each person’s situation. What if he’s lost weight because he is very sick?

Or has a spouse, parent or child that is very sick? What if she is battling an eating disorder? What if, in fact, she has not lost any weight? If she has not lost any weight, but you make the comment that it looks like she has, it seems insincere and something that you say to everyone as a “compliment.” And even if she has lost weight, you bringing attention to it can make it appear that you think she used to weigh too much.

I firmly believe that most everyone who says this has the sincere intention of giving a nice compliment. I doubt anyone makes this comment with the thought that she is purposely hurting someone’s feelings. Regardless, I ask that you consider other compliments to offer people when you see them. In fact, I would recommend not using the word “weight” at all when complimenting someone.

When you do make the decision to give someone a compliment, be sure it is sincere. An insincere compliment is worse than no compliment at all. Perhaps her hair looks nice, or you love his shoes. Better yet, make it a compliment that has nothing to do with outer appearance.

Tell her that you so enjoyed her hosting you at her beautiful home last weekend or you couldn’t get enough of reading his new blog.

We need to take the focus off of weight and stop acting like that is the ultimate compliment. While a healthy weight is important, how much we weigh should not be the ultimate focus. Bringing a lot of attention to it, in my opinion, usually does more harm than good.

If someone has, in fact, lost weight (through diet and exercise) and he or she does open up that conversation with you, by all means, compliment away! Tell her how proud you are of her, or ask him what he is doing to lose the weight. Refrain from giving your personal weight loss or diet advice (unless it is asked for) or saying things like, “I can’t believe how great you look!” There is nothing wrong with supporting someone on his or her weight loss journey, but realize that it’s a thin line and erring on the side of caution is always a good idea.

Oh, and one more public service announcement for you… please, please don’t ever ask someone if she is pregnant.

No matter how pregnant she may appear to be, just don’t do it. I can think of few things more uncomfortable than asking a non-pregnant woman if she is pregnant. It’s an embarrassing situation on both ends and is an easily avoidable position.

YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A PLAN: MAINTAINING A DESIRABLE WEIGHT In my previous article in November, “The Key to Losing Weight: Determination, Discipline and a Plan,” I wrote about the weight loss program I use for any of my clients interested in losing weight. I used the words “simple plan” to help them understand what is needed to lose weight. It boils down to burning more calories on a daily basis than you take in and, of course, doing this over a period. The plan I outlined in November is a 40-day plan and requires much determination and discipline (i.e., no sweets or high-calorie snacks). The plan does work. It’s worked for me and has for many of my clients through the years. But, there also needs to be a plan for keeping the weight off once one goes through the “diet” stage. In other words, how do I keep the weight off over time once I lose it? That can be answered in two simple words: lifestyle change. To lose weight, there have to be drastic changes made to reduce our caloric intake to at least 500 calories per day less than what our body is burning. Remember, to gain weight one has to have a daily positive caloric intake, so it’s probably going to take a reduction of more than 500 calories daily to start the weight loss process. This can be drastic!

So, where is the balance between the drastic cuts it takes to lose weight and getting back to a more normal caloric intake without the weight coming back? I’m probably as good as anyone to answer this question because I’ve been fighting this battle since my late 30s and have come up with good enough results to maintain a desirable weight. The first realization I had to come to grips with was that the athletic or model-ish type of body we see on TV was going to take an extraordinary amount of time, effort and discipline to attain. Is it worth spending 15 hours a week working out, cutting out some of my favorite foods, having the discipline to say “no” every time I go to a party or holiday get together so that I could see that six pack at night when I took my shirt off? For me, the answer to that question was “no.”

So, where did the balance come for me? It all comes down to those numbers I got at my yearly physical. Our body has a way of telling us if our lifestyle is conducive to maintaining good health without a daily weigh in. If the cholesterol, resting heart rate, blood pressure and some of the other numbers that are directly related to my diet, exercise and healthy living were good, I knew I was maintaining a healthy weight.

This does not mean I don’t check the scale because I do on a weekly basis. Now that I am comfortable with my desirable weight, I can stay within a five-pound range of that weight most of the year.

Now, what are the rules for maintaining the weight once you’ve lost it? First, let me say this is coming from one who loves sweets of any variety. They are strictly off limits for me during the week. My reward for being good during the week is a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night dessert. For someone that loves sweets like I do, it’s more of a mindset of being disciplined enough to make it through the week and the reward coming on the weekend. The same can be said about my “big” meal of the day, which for me is dinner. Monday through Thursday, the meals consist of grilled chicken or fish with a salad or vegetables and my reward of burgers, spaghetti and pizza come on the weekend. I eat very healthy low-calorie meals for breakfast and lunch during the week with the guarantee of my favorite sandwich -- peanut butter and jelly -- waiting for me on the weekend.

I know this may sound a little quirky and not the best of plans. The one thing I do know is you have to have a plan, and you must stick to it. Throughout the year, someone has picked up doughnuts at Krispy Kreme or brought in a birthday cake to be shared. It might seem unappreciative, but I have to decline. Doesn’t bother me to say I’d love to take home a piece of cake and enjoy it on the weekend. I am asked to go out and eat lunch or breakfast with friends, but I politely decline. For me, it’s much easier to have the discipline to say “no” than to go out and order healthy food when that menu is full of foods I’d rather have.

Finally, other general rules I have. Stay away from fast food as much as possible. Yes, I love Bojangles’ biscuits and how easy it is to pick one up on the way to work, but fast foods are high in calories and fats and shouldn’t be part of a daily diet. Exercise is imperative. No matter what your exercise of choice, it should include high intensity, strength resistance training. It’s the only way to build lean tissue that will help our metabolism rate to remain high throughout our life. The last thing -- don’t get discouraged if you add a little weight. For me, this is a ritual from Thanksgiving until the end of the year. The discipline I maintain throughout 11 months of the year gets severely tested during the holiday season. The result is being over my desired weight by the New Year. I, like many, make the resolution to lose that weight and get back on my plan. By the time this article reaches you, it’s going to be a new year. I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year -- let’s get back at it!

“Relationships are like a box of chocolates.”

Anyone who has seen the movie “Forrest Gump” remembers the metaphor that Forrest’s mom uses to explain the unexplainable (why bad things happen to good people). She tells him, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Even Jesus in the New Testament section of the Bible used metaphors to help his disciples understand his teachings (“fishers of men”). Relationships can be explained the same way. You may like the look of someone and decide to give them a try, but once you bite into the relationship, you don’t like the taste. Or to steal another metaphor, “You can’t tell a book by its cover.” And sometimes a relationship can grow on you, despite how awful the first bite tastes, like that first ever cup of coffee or first bottle of beer. If you look at the definition of a metaphor, “a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable,” you might think of many different ways to explain your relationship to a curious friend. A perfect example of a relationship metaphor might be the phrase, “That relationship just sucked the life right out of me.” For country-western music fans, Garth Brooks sings about love and describes it by saying, “Our lives are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain, but I’d have had to miss the dance.” Or some of us “middle-aged” readers may remember one of Pat Benatar’s best metaphors, “Love is a Battlefield.” One of our favorite collections of metaphors in music is part of the lyrics to a song by Rascal Flats entitled, “Bless the Broken Road”: “I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you That every long lost dream lead me to where you are Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars Pointing me on my way into your loving arms” The Lone Star state is a great place to look for metaphors.

Songwriters from Texas have quite the collection of tunes with catchy metaphors in the title, and most share thoughts about love. Have you ever thought of yourself as “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” or found yourself “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” or have a lover “Waltz Across Texas” for you? In another Texas song, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” is a metaphor we have all used sometime, maybe not always about tricky relationships. How about “Crazy Arms” or “Whiskey River” or “Starry Eyes” or “Only Daddy Who Will Walk the Line” or “King of the Road” or “Walkin’ the Floor Over You”? Texas crooners love metaphors!

It’s a new year, ripe with the chances of reviewing your relationship in a new light, with new glasses (not rose-colored glasses), and with your eyes wide open, blinders off, post “morning- after Excedrin and Bloody Mary.” How’s that for some metaphors?! A Health Coach Shares Her Most Common Questions

What is the difference between a health coach and a personal trainer? What is the proper ratio between food and exercise? How do you lose baby weight? We sat down with health coach Chelsea Newman of FLY Health Coaching to ask these questions and others. With the new year, getting healthy is on the minds of millions. In fact, 45% of Americans will make a New Year’s resolution, and of those resolutions, 38% of them are weight-related. However, only 8% will be successful! It doesn’t have to be that way though. This is where a health coach like Chelsea can help you reach your goals!

DH: What is the difference between a health coach and a personal trainer?

CN: A personal trainer typically creates a workout program from a

scientific approach. It is systematic and can feel impersonal. With a health coach, a relationship is built and a program is designed based on the client’s needs, enjoyment of activities, and includes a nutritional aspect. Health coaches focus on behavior modification to create lasting change instead of quick results. As a bonus, since not all exercise programming is created for a gym setting, health coaching can be done almost anywhere, including online or on the phone.

DH: What should the balance be between food and exercise?

CN: I tell my clients the balance should be 70% food and 30%

exercise. Within that, you should eat “right” about 80% of the time, with a few cheat meals thrown in (after all, we don’t expect you to go the rest of your life without a birthday cake!). However, it’s about proper planning and balance. All the exercise in the world isn’t going to help you if you don’t eat well.

DH: For the carb lovers out there, how do they break the habit and focus on other nutrients, including protein?

CN: Breakfast is the most challenging meal for overcoming the carb

cycle. After all, most people think of toast, cereal, oatmeal, waffles, pancakes, and other carb-heavy foods for breakfast. Getting adequate protein, especially in this first meal of the day, in a key component to success. I work with my clients one-on-one to find high quality proteins that they like and which will help them. When you get enough protein in your diet, you feel full and satisfied longer, which helps overcome the vicious carb-cycle.

DH: The hips are the worst! How do you lose weight in the hips?

CN: Spot training isn’t realistic, but if you focus on overall health and

weight loss, the hips will naturally slim. Some people are naturally hippy and our culture has an unrealistic obsession with the “thigh gap.” I tell my clients to focus on diet and exercise of high intensity interval training (HIIT) for the best results.

DH: What is the best way to exercise without bulking up?

CN: Women are often afraid of weight training for fear of “bulking up.” Simply put, we don’t have the necessary amounts of hormones to bulk like men do. Lifting weights, including heavy weights, creates more muscle mass, which in turn increases metabolism and decreases percent body fat. Lifting weights will create a toned look and enable you to feel more confident (and enjoy clothes shopping again!).

DH: Many women are struggling to lose baby weight. Often, new mommies are so frustrated by their post-pregnancy bodies, they give up.

What do you recommend?

CN: As a new mom myself, I understand. The biggest thing to

remember is that it took nine months to put it on, it’s going to take time to take it off. Focus on baby and taking care of yourself. Get enough to eat (especially if you’re nursing!) and sleep whenever the baby sleeps. Strap the baby in a stroller or carrier and go for a walk! Get some fresh air. Eating right and walking are a great way for your body to start to feel back to normal.

Preserving Your Family Photographs

Family get-togethers provide many opportunities for sharing family photographs and usually result in more photographs being added to the collection. So how do we manage these precious images that remind us of special people and special occasions?

3. Check the photographic storage location for sunlight and other light exposure. Use an air purifier to remove pollutants and clean the storage area frequently. Handle photographs with clean hands, void of lotions or perfumes, or wear cotton gloves.

If you’re lucky, you may have inherited family photographs from several generations of family members. The people all look different and so do the photographs. There are different methods for handling, treating, and storing images based on the method used to produce the original image.

4. Avoid water damage problems by storing photographs away from water pipes, air conditioner units, radiators, windows, skylights, or exterior walls. Store them at least one foot above the floor.

Early photographic images are described by processes such as calotype, daguerreotype, albumen, collodion, dry gelatin, and Polaroid.

These processes may result in one-of-a-kind images placed in wooden cases (daguerreotypes) or images affixed to different sizes of cards (carte-de-visite) or images on polished glass (ambrotypes) or images on a thin sheet of lacquered metal (tintypes).

If these types of images reside in your family photograph cache, and if you have questions about how to handle, clean or store the images, be sure to identify the kind of image you have before you attempt to treat it. One helpful book is “An Ounce of Preservation: A Guide to the Care of Papers and Photographs,” by Craig Tuttle. The National Archives offers in-depth information on photograph preservation, with a good online reference source at archives.gov/preservation.

We think of photographs as inactive items that just sit in boxes or in frames or in albums.

But photographs are constantly in danger of deterioration because of temperature, relative humidity, fungi, insects, rodents, light exposure, pollutants, water damage, and mechanical disfigurement. Even when we put them into albums or scrapbooks or plastic enclosures, we may be placing them in harm’s way.

Here are a few photograph preservation tips: 1. Store images in a controlled temperature and relative humidity environment that is about 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit and 45-55% relative humidity. An excessively high or low temperature and relative humidity will stimulate chemical reactions which cause photographs to deteriorate.

2. While photographs may be a feast for our eyes, they provide an edible feast for fungi, cockroaches, silverfish, bookworms, lice, mites, termites, moths, mice, rats, and squirrels. The omnipresent fungi are active in warm, stagnant air when the relative humidity is above 60%.

Remove food and beverages from the storage area, keep the air circulating, and check images frequently.

5. If you place images in a frame, consider using a copy rather than the original, unless it is professionally framed using archival mats and backing paper. Make sure the image neither touches the glass nor hangs in direct sunlight.

6. Do not laminate photographs as a method of preservation. This is a destructive process which damages photographs and is irreversible. Instead, encapsulate the image with acid-free materials if such a method is needed.

7. Do not staple or clip photographs with metal holders, and do not use rubber bands or string to bind images. Rubber bands dry, crack, and stick resembling dead worms.

8. Store photographic prints and their negatives in separate locations. Copy photographs and digital images onto a flash drive and/or an external hard drive that is stored away from your home, or use an online backup service.

9. Use acid-free folders, boxes, photo albums, scrapbooks, and plastic enclosures (no PVC) for photo storage. Remove images safely from magnetic albums with a microspatula device.

10. Identify your photographs by writing names and dates on the image back with a softlead pencil, written on a hard surface. For digital images, add metadata or put them into digital albums with names and dates.

If you don’t identify the photographs, why bother with all of the above?

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Identify and preserve your photographs to keep the conversation going.

Your descendants will thank you!

MOLLY GRACE

The name Molly is from the Gaelic Maili, which is a pet form of Mary. The name Mary means “rebellion” or “bitter.”

Add Grace on the end and the result truly is Molly Grace – a strong, charismatic woman with a passion for the empowerment of people. She’s a graceful rebel – a beautiful bitterness too striking not to listen to.

Molly is a traveled artist of many disciplines. She’s been a punk rocker in Pennsylvania, a painter in New York, a stage actress in Pittsburgh, and more recently an entrepreneur and songwriter in Winston-Salem. Molly is a mother and creator with a passion for challenging the dispositions of society that ought to be improved upon or discarded, best she can tell. One avenue she uses to accomplish this is songwriting.

This is what enticed me to start playing with her. There was something intoxicating the first time I saw Molly perform solo, commanding her songs to the audience with conviction and poise. Hearing her didn’t feel like enough. As Molly tends to do, she inspired me to want to participate in the perspective that she was putting forth. Thus, we formed Grace and Nails.

The songs aren’t protest songs, nor are they overt activist creeds – they’re just songs. They happen to express the perspectives of two authors whose writings reflect themes of humanism and the complexities therein. These perspectives aren’t born from ideology, but rather from the contexts of our own lives and experiences. Molly wrote a song called, “There You Go,” in which she describes the struggles of growing up with the existential dilemma that we all face concerning how to find value within ourselves – in relationships, in getting older, and in being admired. In a call-and-response last verse, Molly and I sing to each other, “And when you say that I grew strong, you know I grew much smaller. And normal folks can lift you up, or they can make you wallow. And still you hope that they will say that she is one to follow. And still you hope that they will say, ‘what a lady, what a man.’”

Imagery and storytelling are traditional staples within the Grace and Nails writing. In a song I wrote for the duo, Cussing at a Neon Sign, Molly and I go back and forth in describing a story of children growing up in a bucolic portrait of retro America. “Will you tell me 'bout the time a pair of kids were running 'round an apple farm, smoking Daddy's cigarettes and hiding Mama's garden gloves underneath their arms. And that night you parked a car and listened to the radio by the trestle bridge, and whispered I don't want to go to Sunday school tomorrow, and kissing on the lips.”

Ironically, if one of us more embodied the Nails designation of the duo name, it would likely be Molly Grace. Molly pounds the songs into the room with forcefulness and sternness. The essence of her persona is detectably born from the same place as Molly’s passion for the empowerment of people. youth unlimited giving kids a second chance

BY MEGHAN E.W. CORBETT With the holidays behind us, it can be easy to transition back into our own routines. No matter what that routine may be, it results in the days and months flying by until that next great trip we have planned, and before we know it, the holidays are upon us again. Many people consider fostering but allow their routines and schedules to get in the way and delay the assistance they so badly want to offer. While the choice to foster a child in need is one of the most important decisions you can make, Youth Unlimited will make the transition as seamless as possible.

“Youth Unlimited began as a storefront ministry in downtown High Point in 1968 in response to concern about the welfare of local teenagers,” said Training Director and Therapeutic Foster Care Program Director Judy Fradenburg. “Youth Unlimited has evolved into an agency with a continuum of services for children from birth to 18 years of age in both community and residential programs.

Youth Unlimited began providing foster care services in 2001. We train, license and provide ongoing support for our foster families and children.”

Those who are not immersed in the world of the foster system can easily ignore how great the need is for loving foster parents around the world, and the need is especially great in our community. “We have between 15-25 children in our foster homes at a given time,” said Fradenburg. “However, we have had to turn down literally dozens of referrals for placement due to not having enough foster families available. Our agency is not alone in turning away referrals due to lack of available families. Many siblings are split up because foster families are only able to take one or two children. There is also a need for stay-at-home foster parents (including retired parents) for children that are unable to attend daycare due to being too young or because of medical needs. Foster parents that are fluent in other languages (including American Sign Language / ASL) are also incredibly rare and very much needed. The greater the pool of available foster families, the more likely it is that good matches will

be made with children needing placement, the more likely that siblings will be able to stay together and the more likely that children will be able to stay in their communities or schools.”

While there are sacrifices made on both sides, there are also great benefits! “We recognize that becoming a foster parent is a huge commitment of time and emotional and physical energy,” said Fradenburg. “However, it is incredibly rewarding.

Some foster parents become licensed with the objective of adoption, some foster with the intention of helping children until they return home or are adopted by another family, and still others provide respite for full-time foster parents without having full-time placements themselves.”

Youth Unlimited’s work doesn’t end with its foster program.

“We have mental health residential services for children and adolescents, in-home and outpatient therapy services, psychiatric services and a residential program for siblings in the foster care system,” said Fradenburg. “As part of our foster care program, we assist with accessing medical and dental care, therapy and visits with family. Our case managers provide 24/7/365 support to our foster parents.”

Becoming a foster parent is an important decision, and it is important to educate yourself about the realities of fostering a child in need, both positive and negative. “Our children come from different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds,” said Fradenburg. “They will have all experienced some form of abuse or neglect, and they will all be grieving. They have lost everything familiar to them -- not just their parents, but often siblings, pets, teachers and friends. A common misconception is that foster children are grateful to be living in foster families and that they won’t want to return to difficult family situations.

Most children love their parents no matter what and believe that they have been punished by being taken away from their families. Another misconception is that older children in foster care are ‘trouble’ and can’t be trusted with foster parents’ own children. By and large, this is so untrue. Many older children have been responsible for younger children and just want to be kids again. Initial and ongoing foster parent training is designed to assist foster parents in guiding children and learning new skills that may have been lost along the way.

Foster parents are never out there alone. All kinds of people can become foster parents -- married, single, men, women -regardless of economic status, religion, age (over 21) or sexual orientation. You don’t have to have had children before -- you just need to have a heart for them. We can help you with everything else.”

She shares a quote from Oscar Wilde, “Be yourself: everyone else is taken.” With the relaxed lifestyle most experience these days, an unfortunate side effect is that dress habits have also relaxed – many times to the extreme. When did it become commonplace to see folks running to the store in pajama bottoms? And it’s not just young people making that decision. How often does one hear, “I’m just going out for a second, I won’t see anybody I know.” No, most likely you’ll see more than one person you know.

About Fierce & Fabulous:

Glynis wrote Fierce & Fabulous using the alphabet as a guide. It’s a technique that works well in developing her key points (the capital letters) and supporting points (lower case). Her use of Mirror, Mirror highlights key questions for thought based on the points made in that particular chapter.

Her use of humor and illustrations drive home the points about what is appropriate and what is not. The message is timely and timeless.

For example, the ‘I’ chapter focuses on Investment with the idea of investing in yourself. A few quality pieces can mix and match and carry a person into many different situations – from business to casual, to after hours. ‘S’ covers style terms and what that typically includes (such as business casual, semi-formal, black tie, etc.).

While the focus may be on fashion, the underlying goal is to present oneself with pride and dignity – how you look is how you’re perceived.

Ready, Set, & Enter the New Year Feeling Successful

Are you ready? Are you set to jump from the invisible joy of holiday lights and celebration into the void of a new calendar year? It often feels that way, doesn’t it? The invisible slate of personal and professional goals wiped clean to reveal a fresh start. The irony is in the timing. In the darkest and coldest days of our calendar, we must have a mental and physical need to not only identify our resolutions, but maintain their promise.

We are driven by intense and lofty goals emphasizing a desire to change ourselves. How often has the goal focused on an immediate change of routine or diet? While we have the best intentions, the timing and the expectation lead to a feeling of failure. We are all affected by the winter blues, the need to hibernate while contained for days within our home due to poor weather. This year, let us focus on resolutions which are not only realistic but can create a year of achievement and success.

Plans & Promises: It begins with a consideration of what you need. How often is “more time” the answer? We put off tomorrow what could be accomplished today. Perhaps this relates to your personal relationships, finances, or the desire for something else. We all have something that feels incomplete or messy and requires a remedy. With the area that you chose to alter, a plan is essential. You must promise to live in the present moment, and not wait until tomorrow to improve your life. Choose a word or phrase of inspiration as a daily reminder and post it in your car and on your bathroom mirror and refrigerator. Isn’t seeing also believing?

Relationships: How often do you say “yes” to a child or friend’s invitation to spend time together? We rush here and there, imposed by a strict schedule without allowing time to truly connect with others. It’s time to say “yes” to the moment. We can also promise to improve our inner circle of friends and acquaintances by holding tight to those who improve our lives and return the gift of friendship.

Financial: Money can be a delight, but difficult to attain. We have wants and needs, which may require a change of perspective. Begin the year with a promise to understand how your money is spent. For instance, one area that may be consistently over budget is food. Start assessing how much money you spend weekly; as a result, you may come to the following conclusions: • Shopping with a strict list once a week can ease your food budget. (Find out if your grocery store allows you to order online for additional savings.)

• Warehouse and dollar stores have great deals on canned, jarred and packaged foods at a great savings. (It pays to comparative shop.)

• Planning weekly meals will answer the question, “What’s for dinner?” and eliminate the expense of eating out.

• Getting out of the office with a packed lunch can save money and the need to escape.

Reflecting on “how you live” may help you find a way to improve. You can also save by calling insurance, telephone, cable, and power companies to determine if you are eligible for a discount or special promotion. Getting into great habits will help your overall financial picture and allow you to start moving toward your goals.

Health: Toss out the desire to start exercising for improved

health. Begin by choosing a smaller goal such as cutting back on your salt, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup intake. Make the conscientious effort to read labels, and cut back on buying prepackaged foods. Perhaps by spring, you will start walking on your lunch break or consider starting or enlarging your garden. Great health is an ongoing effort that evolves. It doesn’t have to happen in a whirlwind decision on January first.

This year’s resolution will involve imperfection and difficulty.

Take it slow, reassess, and know our lifelong goals are never ending. We can achieve success with a new perspective! Happy New Year!

Hairstyles for 50+ are no longer the (seemingly) mandatory “bob.”

Anything goes -- long, short, straight, curly or layered hairstyles are considered age appropriate. It’s fashionable to gray gracefully. However, for those of us who want to “wash away the gray,” there are stunning new trends in hair coloring.

“9-1-1! Come over as fast as you can! Don’t tell anyone.” This was a text I received last week from my friend Rochelle. That’s weird, right? The next text had me running for the door. “Bring black trash bags!” Were we disposing of a body? Turns out it wasn’t a body in the foyer but a mountain of clothes. “I’m taking your advice!” She yelled, as blue eye shadow, shoulder pads, acid wash jeans and sweatshirts with sequins sailed through the air. I stuffed the bags. “Out with the old, so we can make room for the new.”

“Thanks, but isn’t this a little over the top?” “Nonsense,” she said, “I need the space because the new me is going shopping!”

It all began a few weeks ago in Barcelona. I sat next to the most remarkable, much older woman on the plane. She wore bright patterned leggings, tall boots, a fitted vest over a flowing top and one glorious hat! I admired her youthful spirit, bold style and easy confidence. That’s when I decided 2017 would be the “New Year for a new you.” Here are some of the fashion trends I discovered.

Hair painting -- Hair is quite literally painted with several shades, so that the colors flow showing no signs of where they begin and end, making applications less frequent. This technique creates dimension, unlike older dyes, that provided a solid, singular color.

Because today’s dyes are gentler, your hair will look and feel more natural and vibrant.

Color contouring -- Stylists choose complementary color shades specifically designed to contour and complement your facial features and skin tone.

Fashion is bold and bright. To the untrained eye, it may even appear mismatched. It takes some getting used to. For example, pair a bright pink scarf with a rust colored top.

Mix up your patterns and/or stripes with floral accessories. Or, with more monochromatic outfits, add mismatched socks or bold accessories.

Are you going to the gym? Consider brightly patterned yoga pants or leggings with a long colored camisole and a different colored t-shirt.

Fashionistas say we should stop hiding our curves. Thank goodness! I’m not sure my curves are all where they are supposed to be, but hey, there’s always Spanx, right?

Women are wearing fitted jackets, tailored tops and dress slacks (with supportive undergarments when warranted). They say “Avoid oversized clothing; it adds 10 years to our age.”

If you are more comfortable in billowy tops, that’s okay too. Pair these tops with fitted leggings or skirts. Draw attention away from your trouble spots with a scarf, hat or jewelry.

Speaking of hats, you may want to hold on to yours for this casual wear trend. Buy a pair of well-fitting jeans with holes already in them. Seriously?

Yes, it was a fundamental stretch for me too. Didn’t we throw out our torn jeans? Not anymore. Now, women spend perfectly good money on already-torn jeans. And, believe it or not, they look awesome. Try them out.

Mine make me feel rebellious, even a little “edgy,” and that’s just fun!

Accessories are always a good idea.

Bangles, layered necklaces, leather or silver cuffs, and hoop earrings are all the rage for our 50+ ladies. Footwear includes wedges up to three inches and boots -- all kinds of boots. And last, but not least, hats! Wear them anytime, anywhere. They are not just for special occasions anymore.

Be bright, and be bold. Invite your bestie over, pour a glass of wine (or tea) and clear out your closet clutter.

Edna Harding Clemmons Moravian Preschool Director Retires After 32 Years

We all find our ‘calling’ in different ways.

Sometimes we know from childhood that we want to teach, or help others in the medical field, or perhaps pursue our artistic abilities. But for Edna Harding, retiring Clemmons Moravian Preschool Director, her love for children began not only as a mother herself, but after taking care of teachers’ children during the school year, so she could have the summers off to travel and spend time with her family.

“I was raised in Winston-Salem, NC, and have lived in Clemmons, NC, in the same house for 51 years. My husband passed away in 2009, and I have two children and two grandchildren, and many years ago I kept the children of several teachers, having my summers off to travel on small vacations. I started working at Clemmons Moravian as a substitute, then a teacher’s assistant, working my way up the ladder, teaching three-year-olds for nine years, eventually becoming the preschool’s fourth director in 1984,” recalled Edna. As director, Edna has the day to day responsibilities that you would imagine, but she also believes that she should be the face that the children see each morning as they come to school.

“I welcome the children each morning when they arrive. I want the children to have a connection with me, knowing that if they ever need help or are hurt, that they can come to me for help.

We have Mother’s Mornings Out, for one to two-year-olds and then 1/2 day preschool for up to five-year-olds. Although I’m not sure of the number of children I’ve had the wonderful privilege of being a part of their lives, I’ve enjoyed every minute of my 32 years here.

When I am out in the community, I often have adults come up to me and say, ‘I know you don’t remember me, but I went to Clemmons Moravian Preschool.’ We even have second generations now in the school. It’s hard to tell you what my time here has meant to me. One of my fondest memories, as I prepare for retirement, was each year on my birthday, a teacher would have the children in her class make birthday cards, and

she would get small little gifts for them to give to me. We’d have a party, and they would sing to me. The purpose of the time wasn’t to necessarily honor me, but to teach them that on special days like birthdays, we honor those we love and care about…I’ll miss that time with the children,” Edna said.

After serving her community in her role as preschool director, and a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader in the past, you might think that Edna would want to take some time away from working with children upon her retirement, but that isn’t the case. “I feel like it is time to step away and enjoy one of my favorite things to do: work with flowers and plants. There’s no better therapy than digging in the dirt for me. I also will be volunteering in the public schools to read to children. I own 500 children’s books, and I love to spend one-on-one time with children. Families are so busy these days, that children may not get the time they need and I want to help in that area,” commented Edna. As she leaves her position at Clemmons Moravian Preschool, Edna has no doubt the new director, Angela Hicks, will do a wonderful job.

“Angela has been here at the school for several years as the community liaison manager and the teachers know and love her. My wish is for a smooth transition, and I have every confidence that with Angela that will be the case. She shares my love for the children that are here and in helping them in any way they may need. I will miss my time here, but I know I will continue to be in the lives of children in some capacity and get a little digging in the dirt done, too!”

#3 – MORNING ME TIME. (June 2016) Ahh, my favorite time of day! Even if you aren’t a morning person, I encourage you to start your day off with meditation and relaxation. Rushing around, lots of TV and/or social media use first thing in the morning isn’t an ideal way to start your day.

#4 – GOING OUT TO EAT. (July 2016) We know eating at home is generally healthier, but eating at home for every single meal is unrealistic. Avoid the bread (or chip) basket, drink water (or wine), and order a salad or protein entrée with double veggies. Most importantly, don’t stress about what you already ate. Enjoy your night out and strive to make a better decision next time.

Nearly ten months ago, the very first “B.E. Healthy” column appeared in the April 2016 issue of Forsyth Woman. It is so exciting for me to share a tidbit of information with our readers each month. I have a passion for living a healthy lifestyle and sharing that with others makes my heart happy. If you’ve read this column more than once or twice, you’ll know that B.E. Healthy is NOT all about physical health. It’s about a journey to a healthy lifestyle.

This includes physical health, of course, but perhaps even more importantly, it incorporates mental and emotional health. I’d like to do a re-cap of the past nine months. The idea behind this column is for readers to try out the tip / idea for 30 days and see how they feel. Have you incorporated any or all of these into your life? If so, I hope that you’ll continue to do so. No one can totally change the way she lives in a month, but by taking small steps and creating new habits (even for one a month), you can make significant changes to your life.

#1 – WATER. (April 2016) I could go on for days about the importance of drinking water. I recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces each day. For example, a 150-pound person should aim to drink 75 ounces of water per day. Do your best to skip out on soda, tea and other calorie-laden beverages. #2 – SLEEP. (May 2016) If you are like me, you may get a bit grumpy if you don’t get an adequate amount of sleep. Beyond that, though, it can wreak havoc on your immune system! Aim to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day (yes, even weekends) to ensure your body is on an optimal sleep schedule.

#5 – DE-CLUTTER YOUR LIFE. (August 2016) Have you

ever gotten sick from being stressed? I have! A cluttered home makes it challenging to be stress-free. I include several tips in the full article, but most importantly, make it a point to throw away a few things every. Single. Day. Food that has gone bad, junk mail, paperwork that is no longer needed, etc.

#6 – LOVE HOW YOU MOVE. (September 2016) Exercise

is undoubtedly a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. Find a form of exercise that you LOVE and look forward to. An exercise you dread is one that I guarantee you won’t stick with. Think outside the box—the full article lists several “ways to move” that you may enjoy.

#7 – 11 FOODS YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND IN MY FRIDGE. (October 2016) Keep fresh fruits and veggies in

your fridge. I like to use Lowes Foods pick and prep so that they are already cut up and ready to eat.

#8 – GRATITUDE JOURNALING. (November 2016)

Consistently writing down three things you are grateful for each day (different things each day) will have a huge impact on your life. I guarantee it. The inspiration for this article came from reading The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor. A fabulous read that I would highly recommend.

#9 – WINE. (December 2016) Last, but most certainly not least, I wrote about my relationship with wine. If you know me, you know I love my nightly (rather large) glass of wine. It may seem excessive to have a glass of wine most every night, but I rarely (if ever) overindulge because of this practice with wine. I savor every sip and am satisfied with 1-2 glasses.

Remember - take small steps and you can create new habits and make significant changes to your life!

Depending on what you might have heard or read online, a 40-plus woman doesn’t need special techniques or tricks to begin dating after a long term relationship. Keep it simple!

What worked at 25 is what will work at 40 and beyond – you just have to remember that you are not only a ‘catch,’ but are worthy of a good relationship, so don’t settle!

With somewhere between 40-50% of marriages ending in divorce, it’s safe to say that there are quite a few women ‘of a certain age,’ as ‘they’ like to say, looking to find that special someone. There’s a shift in your 40s and beyond, from not necessarily ‘needing’ a man, to ‘wanting’ one. Fulfilling careers, raising children and good friends are our priorities, but the right man can enrich your life. Whether you go on blind dates, use internet dating sites or bump into someone in the frozen food aisle at the grocery store, there are certain tips to help you find a man who values you.

When You’re Over 40, You’re Pretty Comfortable in Your Own Skin

When you hit about 30, you have your beliefs well established, and you know what you like and what you don’t. If smoking or drinking bothers you, make sure you take that into consideration when you meet someone.

Don’t excuse behavior that you know is going to be an issue in the future. Invest time in those that you share not only beliefs with, but behaviors, too. If you are looking on dating sites, be specific in your profile preferences. Don’t be wishy-washy; you know what you want, so go for it!

When You’re Over 40, You Know a Lot More about the Nature of Attraction

You’re of the age where you are mature enough to know that sometimes men are like Christmas presents: you can have a beautifully wrapped box with a gorgeous bow, and when you open it there’s a socket wrench set. Pretty packaging doesn’t always mean it’s beneficial or healthy for you. Sometimes the knight in shining armor isn’t the one you want…the knight with dings and dents in his armor has lived, been hurt and still is willing to love. journey and actually listen to you when you share your hurts – that’s the guy to look for.

When You’re Over 40, You Know How Much Baggage You Have and What You Can Take When a man is newly separated or fresh from a divorce, beware, especially if they have been in a long-term relationship. He isn’t at the same place you are, emotionally or spiritually, so don’t expect him to be. A man ‘back on the market,’ in my personal experience, can see the world as full of women at his disposal.

Hurting you is probably not at the top of his list of concerns, but it should be at the top of yours, so guard your heart. Know your value and worth…you are worth more than being a man’s stepping stone back into the dating scene. Women usually put their hearts into a relationship before a man does, so protect your heart. I can’t say that enough. Ask yourself how much baggage you are willing to take on in a new relationship. It’s not judgmental to know that you want to be a priority to a man, so if the guy you meet has small children that demand attention (as they should), then you need to recognize that and, if it’s a problem, move on. Or if you have children and know that a relationship would take away from making their lives the best it can be, the children come first. They didn’t ask to be in this situation.

When You’re Over 40, You May Realize That Marriage Isn’t for You

We all know couples who are happily married, some for many years, but we also have those friends who compromised their lives and happiness because they didn’t want to be alone. When you are good with who you see in the mirror every day, you won’t settle for something not that special in order to overcome what you think is a lonely life.

Remember, you can be in a relationship and be alone and lonely, or you can get to know yourself better during the time you have alone. When your friends go above and beyond in trying to hook you up with a man, don’t take it negatively and think they believe your life is empty without a mate. As I recently read, ‘it’s only human for people to want to feel validated in their own life decisions by seeing you reflect them with your own.’

At the end of the day, you know yourself better than anyone, so treat your heart with care and make sure wany man you meet does the same.

I keep a running list of toiletries, groceries, and other items I need to replenish and go through the weekly store flyers and coupons on Sunday to see if anything from my list is on sale. If there is a special, where I will buy it can depend on what it is. Will I buy the item at a drugstore, grocery store or a superstore? It depends on wherever I can get the best buy because there are little-known secrets on ways to save based on the various types of stores.

GROCERY STORES

Grocery stores are logistically laid out in a square. Most of your essentials are located on the outer rim of the store, such as dairy and produce. However, most of the time people will walk through the middle aisles, spending money on unnecessary items. Try to skip the aisles you don’t need and stick to your list. Never buy toiletries here, instead, buy them at a drugstore. Rarely do I buy toiletries with my groceries. Yes, it is more convenient, but it can also be more expensive. When shopping for items, don’t be afraid to buy generic and store brands compared to brand names. Just be sure to check the ingredients to make sure you are getting the right item. Lastly, remember that the most expensive items are located at eye-level on the shelves. Look up top and down below for better buys.

DRUGSTORES

Drugstores can be a place to easily overspend. One of my favorite tips for saving is to shop when your essential items are on sale, not when you run out of them.

I’m guilty of purchasing toothpaste, shampoo, etc. when I desperately need them and don’t have a coupon. If possible, wait until you have a manufacturer’s or store coupon to stock up. Always read the store flyers and cut out coupons before your shopping trip. Speaking of coupons, check to see if the drugstore has a store coupon book. These books include high-value store specials that can be used with manufacturer’s coupons, letting you double up on the savings. Also, use your

points or bucks from the rewards program.

Some stores have a kiosk when you walk in to scan your rewards card and print more specials.

There can be time limits on when to use the points. If you don’t need anything during the time, as money allows, stock up anyway. You can give the items to someone else, donate them to a non-profit for a tax write off, or keep them for yourself. All the points and bucks are extra money, so spend all you have, and you’ll get more in return.

SUPERSTORES OR MAJOR RETAILERS

Sometimes at superstores or major retailers, we think of buying in bulk. Well, be careful.

Compare the prices of a bulk item to the item individually to see which is the better price.

Also, pay attention to the quantity of the item you need. At the end of the aisles, there can be a fun display promoting an item with a special.

This isn’t always the best deal, but the way the display is advertised serves to trick customers into believing they are getting a great deal.

Another way to save is by downloading the store’s app. Sometimes there will be specials only on the app or additional coupons for you to download. Want to know if an item is going to be on clearance? Look at the price tag. For some stores, a price ending in 7 is usually the original, a price ending in 5 is the 1st markdown, and a price ending in 1 is the final markdown. For others, prices ending in $0.06 or $0.08 mean the item will be on markdown again, and prices ending in $0.04 are at their final clearance price. Lastly, research the store’s markdown schedule, because different items are marked down on different days of the week. Speaking with store managers can help you understand the schedule.

The next time you go shopping for essentials, pay attention to where you are going and where you can get the best buy. Shopping for the right items at the right stores will help you put more money in your wallet.

North Carolina is, and has always been, home to a great many creative minds. It’s quite an array of inventions, products, and ideas that originated from the minds of many North Carolinians over the years. Let’s do some bragging about our ‘inventive’ state and what’s been contributed to the world…

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts: Yum!

We have Vernon Rudolph to thank for this tasty treat. In 1937, he bought the recipe from a French chef. Although his original plan was to market them only to grocery stores, their popularity led him to sell directly from his bakery.

Winston-Salem is home to the first Krispy Kreme bakery. Today, we love it when the ‘Hot Now’ sign lights up on the storefront ‘cause that’s when they’re the best!

Pepsi: Yep, wash that doughnut down

with a cold Pepsi. New Bern is where Caleb Bradham invented ‘the Brad drink’ in 1893 at his drugstore. In 1898, the name of the drink became Pepsi and has been one of the top sodas ever since.

La Bleu: Who knew bottled water would be so prevalent and popular?

In 1990, Jerry S. Smith developed a patent-pending purification process for water. La Bleu, based in Advance, has been quenching thirsts ever since.

Goody’s Headache Powder: Winston-Salem is home to Goody’s, invented by a pharmacist, Martin Goodman, in 1932. Taking care of headaches ever since, Goody’s is sold nationwide. NASCAR legend Richard Petty has long been the product’s spokesperson.

Mt. Olive Pickles: Shickrey Baddour began the largest independent pickle company in the US in the 1920s. Now a national brand, the business originated in Mt. Olive, NC. The company vats can store up to 40 million cucumbers at a time.

Universal Bar Code: Invented by George Lauer in conjunction with IBM in 1969, the universal bar code was implemented in 1972 and changed the checkout process.

Cheerwine: North Carolinians love their soft drinks! L. D. Peeler bought a bankrupt syrup company in Kentucky, moved the operation to Salisbury, NC and continued to make Mint Cola, a beverage from the Kentucky business.

He was looking for something special and bought some flavors from a traveling salesman. He developed Cheerwine in 1917 while experimenting with flavors in his basement. The business remains in Peeler’s family to this day and is the oldest family-owned soft drink company.

Vicks VapoRub: Selma, North Carolina is the home place of Vicks, originally called Vicks Croup & Pneumonia Salve. Lunsford Richardson invented it in 1890. At one time there were 21 different remedies. Lunsford sold the family drug store to start Lunsford Richardson Wholesale Drug Company.

Eventually, his son focused on one product – Vicks VapoRub. That distinctive smell is a memory of many childhoods.

Texas Pete: New York City?! Nope, try North Carolina. That’s the home of Texas Pete, manufactured by Garner Food Company, in Winston-Salem. Texas Pete is the #3 hot sauce in the US.

Putt-Putt: Moving away from beverages and food, a favorite activity for families was started in 1954 by Don Clayton in Fayetteville. Many a putt-putt ball has passed through the windmill since that time.

Gatling Gun: In 1861, the first successful machine gun was invented by Richard Gatling, a physician from Hertford County.

It was used in the Civil War and the SpanishAmerican War. Ironically, Gatling hoped that his invention would help diminish wars.

Funny, with all the soft drinks developed in North Carolina, milk is the state’s official drink. So, let’s raise a big glass of milk to the inventive minds of North Carolina – past, present, and future!

Curious Rites of Passage

BY STACY LEIGHTON AND SAMANTHA LEIGHTON Every one of us has enjoyed some rite of passage, events that marked an important transition in our lives. We couldn’t wait to get our license or to go to the prom. And who could forget spring break? You may not remember all of it, but there’s no denying its importance. Many cultures around the world have their own traditions, too. Some are delightful, while others border on ‘curious.’

For your pleasure, here are a few of these curious rites of passage:

BRAZILIAN AMAZON – BULLET ANT INITIATION

AMISH COMMUNITIES – RUMSPRINGA

13-year-old boys are initiated into manhood in the SateréMawé tribe. After gathering bullet ants, the ants are temporarily sedated in an herbal solution. The ants are woven into gloves, stinger side in. The boys must wear the now angry ants in gloves for 10 minutes. They prove they are men by not flinching during the excruciating stinging.

To complete this initiation, each boy must do this 20 times, over several months.

At 16, Amish young men and women are encouraged to spend unsupervised weekends away from home in the “English world.”

They are allowed a party, to wear English clothes, etc., Then, having experienced both cultures, they will be better able to decide to stay (or not to stay) in the Amish community. By 26, they must choose. If they choose to return, they are baptized and commit their lives to the Amish community and way of life.

NATIVE AMERICANS – VISION QUEST For young men, every tribe’s vision is unique, but their quest is the same: to find their purpose in life and their place in society. Through four cycles of day and night, they are sent into the wilderness. Without food or sleep, it is believed they will have a better spiritual connection. Some tribes consume hallucinogenic plants and herbs to aid in their spiritual quest.

ABORIGINE, AUSTRALIA – WALKABOUT Aboriginal males (age unspecified), will venture into the outback, alone, to reconnect with their ancestry. Occurring between life changing events (school, employment, etc.), this can last from 2 to 6 months. Hunting and living in their traditional ways helps to preserve their culture. This is especially critical to Aboriginal communities as they become assimilated into Western cultures.

JEWISH COMMUNITIES – BAR AND BAT MITZVAH Boys aged 13, and girls aged 12 spend long months preparing for their Bar (‘son’) and Bat (‘daughter’) Mitzvah ceremony. There they will demonstrate a commitment to their faith and upholding of their laws. They must recite a blessing over the weekly reading of the Torah in front of everyone at the Synagogue.

Immediately following, they are honored by family and friends with a banquet, gifts, and revelry.

LATIN TRADITION – THE QUINCEANERA This elaborate coming of age celebration is years in the planning for 15-year-old girls and their families. Even families with modest means will save for gowns and receptions that rival royal balls. After renewing her vows at a Catholic mass, the young lady is honored at a party to end all parties.

MALAYSIA – KHATAM AL KORAN Upon their 11th birthday, Muslim girls celebrate Khatam Al Koran. This is an exciting time that requires a great deal of preparation. At a ceremony in their Mosque, they will recite the final chapter of the Koran, in front of their proud family and friends.

ETHIOPIA – HAMAR COW JUMPING Not your traditional bachelor party…grooms-to-be must successfully jump a (castrated) male cow four times, while naked, before they can marry. If they are successful, they become “Maza” and are then responsible for supervising this activity for other grooms-to-be.

PENTECOST ISLAND, VANUATU, SOUTH PACIFIC – LAND DIVING To prove they are men, boys as young as 7 or 8 land dive with only liana vines tied to their ankles. They begin jumping from shorter towers until they can jump from a 98-foot tower. Because these vines lack elasticity, calculating the correct length of vine is critical. Most divers do hit their heads and necks, though deaths and injuries are rare.

We may not jump over cows, naked, but we can appreciate the importance of cultural rites of passage. These traditions connect us to our ancestry, communities, faith, family, and friends. So, why not embrace them? If nothing else, we will have great stories - some we may even tell!

Vegetable Chili with Cheese Topping

• Non-stick cooking spray • 3/4 cup finely chopped zucchini (1 medium) • 1/2 cup finely chopped yellow squash (1 medium) • 3/4 cup grated carrot (1 large) • 2 TBL chopped green onion • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 15-oz. cans hot-style chili beans in chili sauce • 2 14.5-oz. cans petite diced tomatoes • 1/4 cup catsup

• 1 TBL unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 tsp chili powder • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp bottled hot pepper sauce • 1/4 tsp dried oregano, crushed • 1/2 of an 8-oz. tub cream cheese with chives and onion • 2 TBL milk • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (4 cheese Mexican)

DIRECTIONS

INGREDIENTS

At the age of 19, I made a choice not to eat any poultry, pork or red meat, which cut down on many of the foods I grew up eating. Although I slipped and had lasagna or a burger in my 20s, now I am a pescatarian, meaning I only eat fish or seafood and every vegetable under the sun. Over the years, I’ve had to search for my favorite meals in vegetarian form, and I found the best vegetable chili about ten years ago, and it has become a ‘go to’ meal on cold, winter days.

Spray a large saucepan with a non-stick cooking spray. Cook zucchini, squash, carrot, green onion and garlic in a saucepan over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add undrained chili beans, undrained tomatoes, catsup, cocoa powder, chili powder, cumin, hot sauce and oregano. Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered for 45 minutes or till of desired consistency, stirring occasionally.

Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together flavored cream cheese and milk till smooth.

Stir in shredded cheese. Boil thin spaghetti noodles and cook per directions.

Place noodles in a bowl, ladle chili over noodles. Spoon a little cream cheese mixture onto each serving and sprinkle additional shredded cheese on top. Serve with corn muffins. Makes 6 servings.

Getting Organized for the New Year

When January 1st rolls around, I’m ready to get everything organized for the New Year. Ready to get paperwork in order, my closet straightened, and my planner set to use. But, getting into that state can be difficult and overwhelming. Dreary January provides little excitement and energy for starting a large task, and let’s not mention the possibility of a movie watching, hot chocolate filled snow day. However, there are tips to ease the stress of getting organized and prepared for the start of the year.

When it comes to cleaning anything or any space, there are several questions to ask yourself. Is this item something I use regularly? Am I saving it just in case?

Do I have multiples of the same thing?

Could I use this space for something else? Once you have gone through this mental list, your direction for destressing will become clearer.

• Gather all of your bills and receipts from last year. Also, include your bank statements. Put them together with a big paper clip and keep them for tax time. Come April, you’ll be glad you have already this done.

• Create a family binder with important documents handy, such as birth certificates, health records and other forms you will use. Also, make a section for household budget, recipes, and tax paperwork. Make sure to have information on all family members, as well as your pets. Another tip is to have a different binder for different information. For example, one for medical, one for auto, and one for pets.

• Or you can try to go paperless as much as possible. We always have our phones in hand, so use them to your advantage. There are apps for calendars, shopping lists, and more.

reminders for appointments and other events.

• Find a system with your closet.

Group items by type, color, and season. Use suitcases to store out of season clothes and place on the top shelves.

Closet:

• Shoe boxes make great organizers.

These boxes can help store socks, underwear, t-shirts, toys, etc. Use a variety of different sizes and stack them on your closet floor or shelves. Also, ice cube trays are good for keeping your jewelry straight and untangled.

• There are multiple ways to protect your shoes. Invest in a shoe rack at the bottom of your closet and alternate the way shoes are facing to fit more in. Don’t have space for a rack? Clear shoeboxes allow you to see what pairs you have while giving them their own spot.

• Wooden and padded hangers are the best for keeping a garment’s shape.

Also, you can use small, slim hangers to gain extra space.

I love getting a brand new planner and figuring out how to organize my schedule for the upcoming days. Choose a planner that fits your style and functionality.

Sizes, layout of days and months, and different tabs can be make or break factors.

Planner:

• Use a single planner for everything.

Having everything in one place is the easiest way to stay organized.

• A color coding system is handy for keeping different events straight.

For example, use pink for school,

green for appointments, and blue for social activities.

• Write down special dates, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and important events as soon as you know them.

• Spend some time each day and week planning out your schedule. Take 5 or 10 minutes to go over your tasks. This will also give you a chance to plan out events in the future.

• Plan out and write down your cleaning schedule based on daily, weekly, and monthly chores.

There are countless problems you encounter on a daily basis that can put a little speed bump in your day. Life hacks are those “a-ha!” moments where you find the simplest solution to your daily problems, often using items immediately at your disposal. Each month this column will take you through some creative hacks to use in all different areas of your life to make your day to day as simple as possible. For January we’ll explore hacks to help you keep your resolutions for 2017.

If you’re resolution is to make 2017 a more productive year, there are several hacks you can utilize. Start getting up earlier so you can have more time in your day to get more tasks done. Set your alarm clock earlier one minute every day so you can adjust to the change weasily.

Make a daily to-do list and put your most difficult tasks at the top of the list. Getting the most difficult items on your list done at the start of the day eases the workload for the rest of the day. Your mind functions best at the beginning of the day, so your bigger tasks will be easier to tackle earlier.

Every year could use a little more kindness but if your resolution is to make sure you put more kindness into the world in 2017, try spending 10 minutes each day beautifying the spaces around you. Clean up litter from the roadside in your neighborhood or plant flowers outside the windows of a local nursing home. During the workday, carry around a pack of sticky notes and leave kind and encouraging messages on your co-workers’ desks.

Break up your workday to work a full 25 minutes followed by a five-minute break to reach your peak levels of productivity.

Every day, pay a compliment to first three people you see. This may be your family, or it may be the drive-thru worker or barista at your local coffee shop. That one small compliment may be the spark that changes their day and spreads kindness even further than yourself.

We should all strive to end each year wiser than the year before. In 2017, try a reading challenge by finding a checklist online and seeing if you can read books that take you outside your comfort zone and challenge your views.

If reading isn’t your speed, you can listen to podcasts or audio books. There are hundreds of podcasts out now to choose from. Try picking topics that you have no background on, or that hold an opposite viewpoint from you, so that you broaden your horizons.

If your resolution is to have a more profitable year, there are several hacks you can use to pinch your pennies more in 2017. This year, try a simple cash saving challenge jar. There are several versions of the challenge jar so you can cater it to your budget and comfort level. You can easily save $1,050 in a year with an easy monthly savings plan. In January you simply save $25, then $50 in February, $75 in March, $100 in April, $125 in May, $150 in June, $150 in July, back down to $125 in August, $100 in September, $75 in October, $50 in November and just $25 in December when Christmas spending gets tight.

To help yourself make 2017 a cleaner year, try making yourself a weekly schedule that plans out set chores you’ll do each day of the week to eliminate the need for regular day-long cleaning sessions. On Mondays, set aside 25 to 30 minutes and vacuum the house thoroughly, including detailed spots you usually miss, like curtains, vents and windowsills. On Tuesdays, set aside 15 to 20 minutes to dust your home, and include furniture polishing every other week or once a month as needed.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, take 15 to 20 minutes and split up cleaning your bathrooms, wiping down toilets, counters, showers, tubs and mirrors, and sweeping and mopping floors.

On Fridays, take 15 to 20 minutes to clean your kitchen. Wipe down your counters and cabinet doors with a disinfectant cleaner, wipe down the stove, removing the eyes of the stovetop and sweep and mop the floor.

Retirement

Year One Look Back

It’s hard to believe that I’ve now been retired for over a year. At the time I retired and left corporate America to follow my writing dreams, I thought I had done plenty of planning and was good to go. Even with all the prep work I did, I didn’t pay enough attention to some key areas. I’ve had to make adjustments along the way; not too big a surprise there, but some overlooked things have made significant dents in my plans. I’m sharing so perhaps my missteps won’t be yours when you make your own retirement decision.

Healthcare:

Even with all the hype about retirement health care, the actual cost did not hit home until I got my COBRA package. While I was fortunate to have this option, the cost was quite an eye-opener. I think anyone who pays insurance rates through their employer may have the same reaction. It would have helped if I’d budgeted for the higher rate early in the planning process (I did know it would cost more). As it turned out, open enrollment was a few months after my retirement, so at least I had the opportunity to change my coverage option for a lower premium. I will still have to get another policy later next year to bridge my insurance to the time that Medicare will become available. Anyone retiring early is likely to face this situation. I’m planning to begin researching for the bridge policy next month so that I have plenty of time to make my decision.

Budgeting:

Anyone who knows me knows I budget (annually and monthly). I try as best I can to keep to a monthly budget.

I hate when there’s more month than money left! I spent a good deal of time revising my budget and paying down bills before retiring. On paper, it was a good plan. I found, however, that mentally I had to do many a gutcheck on purchasing decisions. This is still an on-going work in progress.

Travel:

Frankly, I had big travel plans in my head for the first year of retirement. I was going to see the country – all the parts I hadn’t visited yet (mostly out west past the

Mississippi). However, life intervened, and now I’m patiently waiting for those trips. I’m not letting those retirement dream trips go; they’re just waiting for a better time. In the interim, I’m doing more research and will probably be better equipped and informed when travel time actually rolls around.

Scheduling:

You wouldn’t think that lack of a schedule would be a big deal; after all, I spent all my working life with calendars (mine and many times those I worked for). I learned that I don’t get as much done without at least putting it on my calendar. Yes, I’m old school (and a bit of an office supply nerd). I enjoy buying my calendar refills every year. Maybe it’s just a habit, but I feel I’ve accomplished something if I mark it off. I’ve decided that’s a habit I’ll keep. I’ve learned that lack of planning bothers me and even if I’ve done a lot, it just doesn’t seem so without being able to acknowledge it.

My Dad Was Right:

Once my dad retired, he always commented that he was busy all the time. I know that feeling. A full day with nothing to do is rare, even as a retiree; there’s always something to do. Frankly, I like that. I don’t think I’d enjoy retirement as much if I weren’t doing something.

Dream Job:

That, I’m doing right now. I always had a secret dream of writing; now, I get to have that as my second career.

I love it! I still have a plotline rolling around in my head, and as any writer will tell you, it will have to be written at some point. I’ve learned so much about our community since I began writing. It’s quite remarkable how much talent we have in our own backyard.

Did I make the right decision to retire when I did? Yes, I feel confident that I did. I still keep in touch with my work friends. While the actual day that I turned in my retirement letter was one of the most stressful days ever, I knew even then that I was ready for retirement.

I wanted to be able to follow my writing dreams and have time to enjoy my family and friends. I didn’t intend to just leave my work friends once I walked out that last day and I haven’t.

So if you’re thinking about retirement, I wish you the best. Do your homework (there’s lots of planning to do). I hope this retrospect gives you some additional insight. Enjoy the process and plan for your own fulfilled retirement. Follow those dreams!

A Restaurant Owner

There are so many types of people in the world, but we have to make a choice about who we become. This new column gives a glimpse into the typical daily routines of local people, their average days and the lifestyles they have been called to lead.

After dumping all his early morning groceries into the trunk, Brandon Cassidy climbed back into his still toasty car and headed for his restaurant, Food Freaks and Beer Geeks.

Li was already inside prepping the assembly line and whistling softly into the still kitchen.

“Traffic ok this morning?” Li asked, piling fresh cheese into a chilled container on the counter.

“Atrocious, but I did get the sweet onions you needed.”

The lock clicked at the front of the restaurant, and the little bell chimed as JD, Nate, Katie, Tom and Josh hurried in from the cold.

“I didn’t see your car outside, Daddy.”

Called Tom. Brandon smiled at the nickname.

“I had some extra groceries to bring in this morning; I parked around back.”

“The life of a business owner never slows down does it?” smirked Tom scrubbing his hands in the sink.

“You see the reviews on Yelp for the food truck this morning?” asked Katie. “You guys killed it Wednesday. The Elvis got a shout out too; no surprises there.”

“Katie,” called JD who had finished cleaning his hands and was pulling out peelers, “I hope you haven’t gotten too cocky from yesterday. Because today I am going to make fries so mouth-wateringly delicious they’re going to make customers cry.”

“Please, everyone agrees that I make the best; it’s a delicately balanced combination of perfect timing, a steady hand and pure talent,” she retorted.

The whole kitchen was engaged in an enjoyable debate when Marie unlocked the front door. Brandon went over to help her with her load. She had brought new napkins and straws.

“Hey honey,” she said, kissing him on the cheek. “It’s almost 11:00; I saw our first customer pulling up.”

“Ok, can you check the POS machine before they come in? We don’t want another opening night debacle.”

“Hear, hear,” called Tom. Brandon remembered the soft opening of the restaurant a few months ago.

As the customers were pouring into the newborn restaurant, the Point of Sale machine had jammed, and all the orders had to be written out by hand. Brandon had learned a lot about his employees as their true characters manifested themselves through the stress, and he had not been disappointed. The incident had brought the team closer together, and they could now work like a well-oiled machine in any circumstance.

“Remember, Brandon, tomorrow is Wednesday 11:00 to 2:00, you, me, Nate, food truck at Wake Forest Park!” reminded his wife from the refrigerator.

“Yes, thank you, and I got the drink lids at Sam’s this morning.”

“Perfect, I think we should head out a bit sooner this time to beat the early lunch traffic; we just managed to get the kitchen prepped in time last Wednesday.”

A memory of lunch traffic flashed across Brandon’s mind. A minivan had cut the food truck off and, as he slammed on the breaks, the bungee cord strapping the frig shut had snapped. Sauces, apple ring batter and seasoning had flown everywhere.

“Yes,” he said grimacing, “let’s try and miss the traffic.”

The bell tinkled cheerfully again as the first customer of the day swept in.

Brandon and his staff tensed as the cash register clicked, the POS system hummed and they were off like runners at the sound of the pistol. The stove crackled to life; the bacon sizzled, and toppings were piled high as the stuffed burger was escorted down the assembly line. The fries were loaded on and “order up” echoed through the newly scented kitchen.

Marie and Josh, the kitchen manager, high-fived; first order, done!

Another popped up on the POS screen, and they were off again.

It was business as usual until a woman carrying a clipboard, wearing a neat black suit and a foreboding look entered the restaurant.

Brandon’s stomach lurched with excitement.

It was a surprise inspection!

The team stayed calm as the inspector examined the kitchen; Brandon had taught the entire staff firm habits, and the kitchen was in ship shape.

The inspector left 10 minutes later, satisfied.

The 5:00-to-closing-time shift, Gabby, Mia, Grant, Toni and Selena, arrived shortly after.

Gabby was humming a tune as the dinner guests began to arrive and, before long, the back kitchen was filled with a chorus of voices.

Finally, the last “order up” was called, and the final impressed and contented customer exited.

Brandon was telling Marie about a new burger idea called Blue Mad Goon, and she was saying it sounded fantastically unique and delicious just like everything else they served.

As he tucked in his four children later that night, Brandon thought with anticipation about the day to come; he was sure it would be filled with inspirations, surprises and, most importantly, the people he cared about because that is what running a business is all about.

TO THE MUSIC

When I married my husband in 2011, I made all the traditional promises… for better, for worse, in sickness and health, until death do us part.

However, despite using the traditional wedding vows, my marriage vows could have also included: 1. Listening to music all the time. Literally.

2. Listening to a pendulum swing of genres – from Ozzy Osborne to Kenny Rogers within five minutes.

3. Heavy lifting.

4. Very late nights.

Why? Because I married a drummer. I joke around that being married to a musician is also signing up as an unpaid roadie. I can pack and unpack drums with the best of them, though my husband cringes if I ever try to actually play the drums.

As much as I occasionally complain about loading and unloading heavy drum equipment, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’m very proud of my husband’s talent.

I’ve learned quite a bit by being married to a musician over the years…not only from him, but from his musician friends that I’ve spent time with…

1. Never (ever) try to argue with a musician about what constitutes “good music.” They are very emphatic about what is and what is not “good music.”

2. Musicians never have only one favorite artist. Or one favorite song. Or one favorite genre.

3. A true musician rarely plays for the money – getting paid is gravy. Sure, they all want to make money at their craft, but for most musicians I know, it’s about the simple joy of playing.

4. A drummer cannot have enough drums (mine has two sets) and a guitar player can never have enough guitars.

5. Musicians are experts at telepathic communication.

I love watching my husband interact with his band mates (and have gotten in the habit of watching other bands to see if they have the same kind of synergy). The silent communication that is done on stage, through eye contact, smiles, and nods of the head, are pretty impressive.

6. They are also masters at teamwork.

When you have multiple instruments playing to complement one another, you know there is a strong demonstration of teamwork being played out in front of you (pun intended).

7. Most musicians have a great, self-deprecating humor about themselves… My husband is the first to tell the standard drummer joke, “How do you get a drummer off your doorstep?” (Answer: Pay for the pizza.)

8. Most of them talk in movie lines – specifically, “This is Spinal Tap.” This one goes to 11! If you want to spend time with musicians, it will serve you well to be familiar with that movie!

I love being married to the music! Next time you have an opportunity to see local musicians, be sure to show your support! The talent and camaraderie on stage is the culmination of years of learning respective instruments and hours of practicing the songs they play – over and over and over again!

JOYFUL JANUARY

Well, we made it through Christmas!

All of the extra events and tasks squeezed into our already full schedules have come to an end, I think. Most of us look to January as a down time… a time when things are forced to slow down a bit due to the weather conditions. We are just beginning to take an easy and unhurried breath again when we are bombarded.

Yes, it’s true. We are literally bombarded with every diet book, fitness guru, and workout wonder known to man. Certainly, marketing executives are out of touch with real women. After weeks of shopping, cooking, writing cards, attending school and business holiday functions, decorating, entertaining, and volunteering, women need a comfort month to regain their balance. Retired folks need a work break!

But honestly, women of any age are exhausted after the holidays. Boomer women have exhausted themselves “re-creating” the perfect home for their returning adult children. They have cooked everyone’s favorite meal in which some of the dishes contain the phrase, “from scratch.” Let me tell you, “scratch” is always the most tiresome ingredient. Many have shopped for those hard-to-find hot toys of the season for precious grandchildren. Then there are the social obligations and grandchildren’s performances. Just balancing the calendar can bring on fatigue for many women.

So we definitely need a new mindset for January. After all this stress, the last thing any woman needs is the media overwhelming her to punish herself. I don’t care how it is marketed…

“Do it for yourself!”

“Become your best self!”

“Feel younger and stronger!”

It is still pressure and punishment. Punishment for all those lovely meals we worked so hard to create during the holidays. Why should we feel bad about it?

So I recommend that we practice “Joyful January,” a month of relaxation and reflection… a month to regain our balance. We can do this by tuning out all the media blitz about dieting and exercise. There! I said it! It is okay to curl up in your favorite chair and reflect on the great memories you’ve just made and enjoy a treat.

Reward yourself with a special snack after you have undecorated the tree and cleaned up the mess. Breathe deeply and enjoy the contented feeling of a successful family event. If you feel energetic, go ahead and organize your holiday pictures into an album or transfer them onto a disc. The reflection time you take for yourself is invaluable.

I recommend a lot of stretching in January. When you first wake in the morning, breathe deeply and stretch your legs out wiggling your toes in the luxury of your sheets, knowing that you do not have to cram them into dress shoes for a party. After your shower, stretch your arms into a hug for yourself in appreciation for all you’ve done for the holidays. Before dressing, bend forward and touch the floor. Think of it as a well-deserved bow for a successful performance, whether for believable “acting” or best supportive family member.

Please help me to infuse the peaceful month of January with joy for exhausted women of every age and location. We’ll start with one delayed gym membership at a time. February is a more reasonable month to start your new healthy exercise routine. The gyms will be less crowded as the New Year’s resolutions quickly expire for most folks by the end of the month. I urge you to embrace Fitness February, thereby giving your self-permission to put the joy back into January.

Relax, rejuvenate, and regain a Joyful January!

Webster defines muscle cars as, “any group of American-made, two-door sports cars with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving.” In other words, they are loud, and they go real fast!

Now, I’m the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about how a car works. Other than filling up the gas tank, making sure it has its oil changed on schedule and rotating the tires . . . that’s about it. The way the engine works? A complete mystery. But, you don’t have to know everything about cars to like cars. The muscle cars of the ‘60s and ‘70s – those are the ones I really like.

They were the ‘it’ cars of my generation. The cool cars, the ones that got noticed cruisin’ on Friday night or roaring into the parking lot at school.

Between the songs about them, the movies and TV shows, lots of people have fond memories.

My first car was a ’71 Mustang – fastback, lime green with black racing stripes down each side.

Not your typical girl’s car, but I loved it. Mustangs have been one of my favorite cars for a long time.

Ford Motors hit it right with their introduction in 1964 (or 1964 ½ to purists). Decades later, they’re still popular. Recently, CBS’s show Blue Bloods had an episode about the Bullitt Mustang.

Driven by Steve McQueen, one of the dark green ’68 Mustangs used in filming was reportedly sold after the movie for $2,500. The Charger driven in the epic chase scene was destroyed during the filming.

The 1972 Gran Torino (dark green like McQueen’s car) used in the Clint Eastwood film was purchased on-line and later bought by Eastwood for his collection. The car used in the Starsky & Hutch series was also a Gran Torino (a red ’75 model).

The 1964 Pontiac GTO is considered one of the pioneers among muscle cars. It could go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Ronny and the Daytonas had a hit song – GTO – that you may remember.

Other well-known muscle cars include the ’68 Road Runner, the ’69 Chevy Camaro (it could go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds (see how much improvement came about in five years?), the Chevy Nova, Pontiac Trans Am, Plymouth Barracuda, and the Chevrolet Chevelle SS. And let’s not forget the Dodge Charger of the Fast & Furious movie series.

So many classic rock & roll songs were written about these cars: Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett, the Dukes of Hazzard theme (who didn’t love that airborne orange Charger?), and Hot Rod Lincoln and Maybellene by Chuck Berry. The Beach Boys has several hits, including Little Deuce Coupe and 409. One of my favorites, by the Beach Boys, was The Little Old Lady from Pasadena – “but parked in a rickety old garage, there’s a brand new shiny super stocked Dodge.”

And let’s not forget the TV series that featured some favorite muscle cars. First to mind is, of course, The Dukes of Hazzard, but there was also the Monkeemobile from The Monkees that was built from a Pontiac GTO, that cool Corvette on Route 66, and Nash Bridges’ ’71 Barracuda.

Present day cars are certainly more energy efficient, but the era of the muscle cars was special. Perhaps it’s just nostalgic to remember them and the friends who had them. They really were and still are classics in their own right. Varoom . . . . .

2016: WHAT TO TAKE & WHAT TO LEAVE 2017 could not have come soon enough.

For many of us, the 12 months that were 2016 brought some of the worst pain and sufferings we have known for a while.

The worst mass shooting in United States history. Some of the worst social divides we have seen in decades. Entirely too many high-profile deaths, many marking the ends of some of the most influential lives we have ever known.

But it would be unfair to judge a year on its shortcomings and not acknowledge the many triumphs we all enjoyed last year.

Here’s to 2016’s highlights, the moments we cherish and carry with us. As for the rest?

Leave it in the past.

TAKE: THE RIO SUMMER OLYMPICS

The Rio Games, by all indications, was headed quickly toward the “leave” category in early 2016, as security and virus concerns cast a cloud over the event. But looking back, the 2016 Summer Olympics shone through as a source of light in an uncertain international hour. Sure, the games had their share of missteps, but as it should, the Olympics served as further proof that athletes and citizens alike from countries across the world share far more than a competitive nature. Olympic events give us hope for worldwide cooperation. Let’s take that with us moving forward.

LEAVE: THE IPHONE 7

I am team Apple through and through, but enough is enough. The newest iPhone model seems to sacrifice technological advancement for wow-factor publicity. Eliminating the headphone jack for promoting yet another Apple product seems vain. Smartphones, in general, seem to have very few avenues for continued improvement, but this one was a miss. Keep your trusted cord headphones and your iPhone 6 and hold out for what 2017 has in store.

TAKE: ADELE

Even though her latest album, 25, released in late 2015, 2016 has been the year of Adele. Multiple songs from the album have circulated worldwide on top charts, and the Adele Live 2016 tour has brought smiles to sold-out arenas from Ireland to Los Angeles.

Nothing could make 2017 more exciting than more Adele.

LEAVE: THE NFL

An unpopular opinion, I know, but let’s put this sport to bed. The NFL experienced a sizeable dip in popularity early in the 2016 season, and despite a resurgence following the presidential election, the sport of football is simply archaic. Research continues to prove that its players are sacrificing their bodies and minds for entertainment purposes. In 50 years we’ll look back and say “I can’t believe we over thought that was OK.”

TAKE: THE CUBS!

What brings Americans together more than a 100-year curse? The Cubs enjoyed a special season throughout 2016—from April into November—but the eight-day World Series between Chicago and Cleveland may very well go down as one of baseball’s most important milestones. Families held their breath with each pitch and even the most casual baseball fan tuned in to see history in the making.

LEAVE: SUPERHERO MOVIES

The genre, of course, extends well beyond 2016, but please, can we move on? Both Marvel and D.C. Comics have attempted to capitalize on the popularity of superheroes movies with extensive plot lines and entire universes played out over the course of a dozen or so movies. I don’t say this often, but in the case of many comic book characters, the original was better. Leave it alone.

As we enter 2017 with a clean slate and a fresh start, there’s no doubt the next year will bring its own set of highs and lows. But without the bad, how do we appreciate the good?

Here’s hoping 2017 treats us well.
