January also brings a big celebration: a huge happy birthday to my dad (aka Teej) who turns 70 on New Year’s Day! He has always been wonderfully nontraditional in the best ways. While other dads collected ties or golf gear, mine was always getting his hands dirty running a body shop and fixing cars, or riding dirt bikes. My mom and I regularly joke (and maybe envy a little!) that he is the most unbothered human—calm, steady, and always grounding us. We’re incredibly lucky to have him. If January feels like it lasts 100 days to you too… you’re not alone. The cold, the early sunsets, and the quiet after the holiday rush can make the month feel slow…and if I’m honest, a little boring. Suzy’s article on page 24 has seven great ways to beat those post-holiday blues. I love every single one—especially staying active, getting social, and soaking in all the sunlight we can get. And speaking of getting social, come join us for Girls’ Night Out! We’ll be at Little Richard’s (Stratford Road location) on Tuesday, January 13th. You can find more details on page 67, and if you haven’t already, make sure to subscribe to our newsletter at forsythwoman. com so you never miss a GNO! I’m also thrilled to introduce two new columns launching this year. • Forsyth Firsts by Debbie Linville explores historic “firsts” in Forsyth County. She’s starting with the county’s first true gas station—and I bet you’ll recognize it! Check it out on page 28. • The Journey by Joy Nelson Thomas will dive into themes that shape women’s personal and professional growth. Her first piece is on page 46.

If there’s one thing Forsyth Woman readers know for sure, it’s this: when women gather with purpose, passion, and possibility… magic happens. And this year, that magic is about to reach a whole new level.
On Thursday, March 19th, 2026, the 5th Annual Women on the Move Conference returns—bigger, bolder, and more inspiring than ever—at the breathtaking Legacy Stables and Events. With the theme TRAILBLAZE: The Path to Balance and Brilliance, this year’s experience is designed to help women carve out their own unique journey toward purpose, growth, and fulfillment. And when we say all women, we mean it. Whether you’re building a business, growing your career, navigating a big life transition, or simply craving a space to learn, reset, and connect—we created this conference with you in mind.
TICKETS YOU’LL WANT TO GRAB ASAP The first 55 tickets are $20 off—and if the past four years taught us anything, they won’t last long. Even after those early-bird seats are gone, we’re committed to keeping this event accessible: tickets are just $100, which includes a full day of programming and a delicious catered lunch. It’s an investment in yourself that pays off long after the day ends.
FOUR DYNAMIC SPEAKERS. TWO POWERHOUSE PANELS. ENDLESS TAKEAWAYS. This year’s speaker lineup is nothing short of phenomenal— and the best part? Every single one of them is a local woman blazing her own trail right here in our community. (continued on page 16)

Keeping It Real NO MORE CRASH LANDINGS! by D R . D E B B I E L A N I E R
Once the magic of Christmas rests upon the shelf of our memory, the New Year stubbornly comes knocking. I quickly realize I don’t have my junk together. I nervously ponder potential resolutions only to realize I’m rehashing last year’s fizzled pursuits. Many of us don’t run with laser beam focus toward what we truly want because we don’t have the slightest clue what it is that we want. You know it’s true. We keep doing what we’ve always done and keep getting what we’ve always gotten. Familiar becomes the strategy. Predictable becomes the standard bearer. Could it be that we don’t allow ourselves to dream for our future because we’ve learned to expect more of the same? Could it be that we’ve assumed our beginning essentially decides our finish? Experience teaches that the trajectory of our journey doesn’t generally change course overnight. It’s hard work. In fact, it’s a lot easier to keep the freightliner of life moving in the same direction, isn’t it? Friend, I’ve come by to shake you out of your slumber. It’s like this. If we add nothing to our sick marriages, we get nothing. If we improve nothing in our fizzled finances and joyless jobs, we receive nothing. In fact, if we continue on this course, we eventually have nothing to worry about because all that’s left is…well, nothing.
Life is one continuous farming adventure. Each of us plants seeds that produce returns. The sowing always determines the harvest. It’s as sure as the sun rising. This is where it gets tricky. Every seed is true to itself. It operates with meticulous intention. It’s just that we don’t always execute our planting with that same resolve. (What the what is she talking about?) Seed is a stubborn thing. Every seed produces a return that resembles itself. You can’t plant apple seeds and get oranges. The apple seed is always going to produce apples no matter how many orange trees surround it. See, it’s true to itself. There’s nothing random or arbitrary about the seed’s objective or outcome. It doesn’t act haphazardly…but sometimes we do. What kinds of seed are we sowing? We can’t constantly complain about our marriage and expect a different harvest. We can’t perpetually grumble about our job and think it’s going to get better. We can’t whine about our wallets as if it’s hopeless and expect to bump into hope.
JODIE BRIM CREATIVE
Is it just me? Am I the only one who euphorically glides through the holidays only to crash land right into the New Year?
My husband says it like this. “Seed is a little piece of tomorrow. It's the smallest form of next!” Sure, there’s some plowing to be done before a good harvest comes. To be honest, in that “in between” season of planting and return, it feels as if absolutely nothing budges, much less grows. But THEN…inevitably, harvest appears that resembles the seed we sow! You suddenly realize the planting and plowing are worth the work! Listen, friend. God speaks this blessing over your life today. “For I know the plans I have for you,” says
the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Just look at how much God believes in your future. Catch a glimpse of how invested He is in your destiny. It’s time to shake off self-pity and every excuse that keeps you where you are. Stop permitting the pain of your past to threaten the joy of your future. Stop letting the chaos of your beginning confine the dreams you chase. Stop allowing your present deficits to restrict your view from all God has dreamed for you. No more crash landings. Let’s get to planting. Harvest time is coming! I promise! God does, too!

The Truth of It by J E A N M A R I E J O H N S O N
“Paris, PLEASE...enough already!” Good Lord...when will she ever stop? The “Mixed Poodle Rescue” description should have been enough to raise at least one of my overplucked eyebrows. “More or less looks like a poodle, should act like a poodle, but who knows?” Super cute, though!” That “who knows” should have been another warning, but being human, I lean into the hopeful, into what I wanted her to be. Well, good Lord, she was far from that. A banshee from the get-go, I tried molding her into my image of poodle perfection, of what she “should be.” And, to a certain extent, my girl “Paris” proved malleable. Bless her southern heart, she learned a few basic commands – to sit, to sit up, to “go easy” – along with a few key motivators: “Does Paris want a treat?” or “Look, there’s your friend!” But, that’s pretty much where we hit a hard stop because, beyond that, she was hell on wheels, intent on patrolling THE PROPERTY from inside and out with the mere suggestion of a potential threat – an errant branch, a distant bark, an Amazon driver two doors away. And, don’t get me started on that big yellow behemoth – the school bus.

Almost three years in, I’ve given up trying to train, cajole, scold or punish her into being who I imagined she would be. And yeah, I knew that I had choices. I could return her to the loving rescue group from whence she came or offer her to a more lenient neighbor. I breathed; took in those long breaths intended for clearing the mind and sat in my discomfort, awaiting the insight which eventually relieved me of my suffering: It’s how she’s wired. It’s who she is. It’s the truth of it. Deal with it. Oh crap, I hate when my inner knowing smacks me with irrefutable straight talk. I also know that some pricey, well-credentialed canine trainers and dog whisperers would push back hard, would tell me that it doesn’t need to be this way. After all, YOU, alphahuman, can be trained. Oh, shut up! But, they would be right. I could be trained to mold her into a more obedient and compliant version of herself. And honestly, I’ve sat with that compelling proposition, ultimately deciding that this is “good enough,” a
compromise between Paris’ nature and my preferences would be okay. I decided to see her for who she is – a brave, wired guard dog who will protect her gate-enclosed property and her humans with every fiber of her wild being – all 18 solid-as-a-rock pounds of her. And while I am genuinely apologetic to our accommodating neighbors, I also respect and admire that she is being who she was born to be while providing a “service,” by way of protection, no less! It’s fascinating to see her through that lens. This journey with my crazy, quirky, lovable Paris has made me think about the expectations we have of those we co-exist with, those we love. Are we willing to see them for who they are, to respect and appreciate the unique gifts they bring to this shared experience we call life? It’s a very “big” question. My experience with Paris, affectionately nicknamed Miss Wigglesby for her signature, unmistakable butt moves, reminds me to stop, to breathe, to take you in. To cut you the same slack that I can only hope you’ll cut me. Because here’s the thing – love isn’t blind unless you’re 13 – ironically referred to as “puppy love.” No, it’s the wise, consummate expression of appreciation, patience and forgiveness. That’s the truth of it.

How a Financial Advisor Can Help Lower Your Tax Bill BY MIKE MCGILVARY, AIF®, FINANCIAL ADVISOR
HOW CAN A FINANCIAL ADVISOR HELP?
As part of an overall plan to manage your wealth, many financial advisors will offer tax planning services, which may include:
Tax planning is a vital part of any wealth management strategy, but reducing your tax burden is not always a straightforward process, especially for individuals with more complicated returns. Careful planning can help minimize your tax liability, leaving you with more money to further your financial goals. Tax planning is not just something you think about when filing, it requires year round attention if done properly. Surely, your accountant should play a large role in this, but consider working with a financial advisor who can recommend taxefficient investment strategies as well.
WHAT IS TAX PLANNING?
Tax planning involves examining your finances holistically and incorporating strategies to reduce your overall tax bill through careful planning around income, purchases, investments and strategies like tax-loss harvesting. Strategic tax planning can also help maximize your estate and provide more flexibility for your heirs. For example, as part of your tax plan, you might hand off portions of your wealth to family members as tax-free gifts or establish an irrevocable trust to reduce the federal tax burden for those who inherit your estate.

•
Charitable giving strategies. The amount and timing of charitable giving can have an impact on your tax bill. A financial advisor can help you determine when and how much to give, so you can deduct your charitable contributions from your adjusted gross income. An advisor may help you time gifts to charity, so deductions can offset other big taxable events, like a financial windfall, a salary raise or a large bonus at work.
•
Tax-loss harvesting. An advisor can help you determine when to sell investments that have lost value to realize capital losses that can be used to offset taxable gains. Your advisor can help you use proceeds from the sale to reinvest in similar securities with upside potential.
•
Choosing tax-efficient investment vehicles. A strategic tax plan will consider the impact of contributions to tax-deferred savings accounts like 401(k)s, 529 education plans and health savings accounts (HSAs). Some plans – like traditional 401(k)s, traditional IRAs and HSAs – provide an immediate benefit by allowing you to reduce your taxable income. Contributions to 529 plans are not tax deductible, but investments inside the account grow tax free. Withdrawals made to cover qualified education-related expenses are tax free as well. A financial advisor can help you plan contributions to tax-deferred accounts to minimize what you owe in taxes.
•
Multi-Year tax planning. The most effective tax plans go beyond annual strategies and look ahead to your long term financial goals. An advisor can help you put together a multi-year plan to reduce your tax burden in the long run. For example, they could help you bank capital losses to offset a future taxable event, such as the sale of an investment property.
Tax planning involves a lot of moving parts from annual adjustments to IRA contribution to charitable deductions to staying abreast of local tax laws. Working with a financial advisor on year round tax planning can help ensure you are maximizing tax deductions, taking advantage of tax credits and using taxefficient investment vehicles effectively. An advisor can help ensure you do not miss any opportunities to reduce your bill and will keep up with regulatory changes, making any necessary adjustments to your plan. This information is not intended to be a substitute for specific individualized tax or legal advice. We suggest that you discuss your specific situation with a qualified tax or legal advisor.

Ways to Beat the Post-Holiday, Winter Blues
Small Shifts to Boost Your Mood and Energy Until Spring Arrives by S U Z Y F I E L D E R S
The holiday season is always so busy and filled with festive lights that it’s easy to overlook the fact that it gets dark so early and daylight is fleeting. However, as soon as the new year hits and the trees are packed up, winter really sets in for many people. Does this time of year leave you feeling a little sad or less energetic? You aren’t alone!
In fact, there is a condition called “winter depression” – more officially known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The reduced sunlight during winter can actually disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm. This is your internal clock that plays a key role in mood-regulating hormones like serotonin and melatonin. When
these levels get out of balance, it often leads to disruptive sleep, sadness, less energy and more. Luckily, there are some ways to turn the winter blues around! Below are a few ideas to add some cheer to your winter.
ENJOY SUNLIGHT
GET SOCIAL
Another way to combat the winter blues is to stay social. Two fun social options that are great indoor options are enjoying a girls’ night out at a local restaurant or joining a book club. If you are crunched for time, even a quick call or text chain with a bestie provides the perfect social fix.
It’s important to take full advantage of the sunlight hours. Even if it’s cold, bundle up and take a walk or take the kids to a park. Another great way to capture the sunlight is to enjoy your coffee outside on the patio in the morning.
STAY ACTIVE
Exercise is imperative for mood-regulating hormones as it releases endorphins. If you aren’t a fan of the cold, exercise indoors. You can join a gym which is great for having more structure, workout options and socializing. However, if that’s not in your budget, there are plenty of workout routines you can do at home.
MAKE IT FUN
One reason the winter blues don’t often hit until after Christmas is because that time of year is fun and bright, so capture and carry that festive feeling throughout the season. Go shopping for fun winter clothes that you feel great going out in. Try out different types of winter flavors in your drinks and meals.
FOCUS ON SELF CARE
While self care is important all year long, it is vital during the winter. Self care allows you to recharge your batteries and feel balanced. It can be anything as grand as having a spa getaway weekend or as small as taking a relaxing bath.
GIVE YOURSELF GRACE
CREATE A WINTER BUCKET LIST
Another way to embrace the season is by creating your very own Winter Bucket List. It will allow you to have fun and remember winter isn’t so bad! Need ideas for your list? Luckily, last winter, I wrote an article on this topic. Simply visit forsythfamilymagazine.com and search “Winter Bucket List.”
It’s hard for us women, but do not be so hard on yourself. If you didn’t finish your to-do list, instead of beating yourself up, change your list to be a little more manageable. Break down larger tasks into smaller ones. If you’ve been hating that holiday weight you put on, focus on the physical attributes you love.

RECONNECTING TO YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF by M A R T I E E M O R Y
Since the first day Drs. Jessica and Joshua Katz opened Aligned Health & Wellness in Kernersville in 2007 – and throughout their exciting expansions to Winston-Salem and Burlington – the two have devoted themselves to improving the daily lives of peripheral neuropathy patients of all ages.
encouraged me to see what the practice was all about,” Danielle shares. “A year later, I am very grateful I made that call!”
That incredible care has been a true blessing to Winston-Salem resident Danielle Borland, who learned of Aligned Health & Wellness about a year ago thanks to her husband who just happened to see a commercial for the practice.
As a cheer coach in the WinstonSalem area for more than 15 years, the 47-year-old Danielle had always been very social and active. More than anything, she hopes her story will show younger folks that neuropathy isn’t only an elderly person’s issue – and that wonderful treatment exists with Aligned Health & Wellness!
“My husband had watched me suffer for so long with numbness in my feet and excruciating pain, and he
Before her connection with Dr. Katz, Danielle had previously been unable to sleep without the assistance of heavy medication. She now happily shares that she hasn’t needed that medicine to sleep in four or five months.
“Dr. Katz is like family now – I am proud to come into the office, and I can tell they are proud of me in return for making progress,” Danielle adds. “I’m already line dancing again and cheering with my girls!” Danielle is quick to mention the importance of having a strong support system of friends and family – which she has – and that making your treatment a priority is a must. She’s fortunate that she’s able to coordinate much of her treatment into her daily work routine. Dr. Joshua Katz explains the therapy plan he put together to help Danielle improve her nerve function, reduce discomfort and support healthier blood flow – all without medication or surgery. “We first supported her nerves from the inside, with clinically studied nutrients that improve circulation and give damaged nerves the building blocks they need to repair,” he shares. “Her treatment also includes a gentle, bioengineered electrical therapy designed to retrain damaged nerves so they fire correctly again. Think of it as helping a ‘fuzzy’ radio station tune back into its proper signal.”
26 | ForsythWoman.com
Sensory activation therapy for the feet was also part of Danielle’s regimen, which targets the nerve receptors on the bottom of the feet to improve stability, balance and nerve-to-brain communication. “It basically reminds sleepy nerves, ‘Hey…wake up, you’ve got a job!’ and that is so important,” Dr. Katz explains. Rounding out Danielle’s treatment – which requires quarterly follow-ups – is low level light therapy, where specific wavelengths of light support blood flow, cellular repair and nerve regeneration. It’s relaxing, painless and helps the body produce more energy where healing is needed. For Danielle, joining the Aligned Health & Wellness family has been life changing! Now back in touch with her energetic, outgoing wonderful self, she is a true testament to the expertise, professionalism and personal care that Dr. Katz delivers to every patient. Another way the doctors share their non-drugbased approach to peripheral neuropathy is with lunch-and-learn educational seminars, held on most Tuesdays at the Olive Garden located at 170 Hanes Mall Circle in Winston-Salem. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Aligned Health & Wellness office. Patient Testimonial “Years ago I suddenly got to where I could not walk barefoot on tile floors without difficulty, and then developed balance issues, all of which I assumed was because of old age. After taking some prescribed medication for a few weeks with no results I read about this clinic in a magazine and thought, ‘What do I have I to lose?’ After just three days of treatment, the feeling in my feet returned. By the second week I was no longer relying on my cane for balance. I had been told by a previous doctor that a wheelchair was next for me. I would certainly look into what Aligned has to offer.” - Fred

he first true “gas stations” started appearing in North Carolina around the early 1920s. Before this time, drivers primarily purchased gasoline from general stores, hardware stores and other businesses that also sold kerosene. As time marched forward, gas stations across the nation became more than just a place to get fuel. They were landmarks symbolizing the automobile’s growing importance in American culture, representing progress and a new era of mobility. Major oil companies competed for customers by establishing distinctive corporate logos and slogans to build brand loyalty and to help consumers identify their stations. In the 1930s, eight Shell Oil service stations with gas pumps located in front of the structures were built in Forsyth County – seven in Winston-Salem and one in Kernersville. Bert Lester Bennett, Sr. and his nephew, Joseph Henry Glenn, Jr., owners of the Quality Oil Company (a local marketer of Shell Oil) designed the stations in the unique shape of a giant scallop shell as an innovative advertising strategy to attract motorists. The patent for these one-story, 18-foot-tall, three-dimensional novelty buildings was granted in November of 1930, setting the stage for construction by the Frank L. Blum Construction Company. Making a scallopshell-shaped gas station was not easy! First, the office and bathroom were boxed in, then surrounded by a bent wood and wire framework over which a concrete stucco was applied. These novelty shell-shaped architecture service stations were designed to stand out, and they certainly did! As time marched on, the buildings proved to be too small for expanding automotive

services and many were forced to close, but the scallop shell gas station on the quiet corner of East Sprague and Peachtree Streets continued to serve the community until the mid-1950s. In 1972, JD Watson began renting (and later purchased) the gas station for his lawn mower repair shop which spared the iconic structure from demolition. In May of 1976, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, the city of Winston-Salem officially designated it as a local historic landmark in May of 1994. The once bright yellow-orange scallop shell structure slid into disrepair near the end of the 20th century. In the late 1990s, Preservation North Carolina, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic sites, raised $50,000 and spent one year restoring the landmark to its former glory. It was tedious
work! Layers of faded yellow paint were removed to reveal the original color, the crack in the original front door was repaired (it was previously sealed with black tar) and the interior was carefully restored and filled with antique Shell memorabilia, newspaper clippings and photos. As a final touch, Quality Oil Company generously donated two restored gas pumps. This unique property remains today as the only one of its kind and, until 2011, it served as a regional office and informational center for Preservation North Carolina. The quirky service station of the past has a protective covenant which prohibits it from being architecturally altered or destroyed, so the scallop shell will be preserved in perpetuity. While it is not possible to enter the building, photo ops are available 24/7 at 1111 East Sprague Street.

INGREDIENTS • 1 whole chicken (I usually grab the cheap ones with the giblets) • Cajun seasoning of your choice
INSTRUCTIONS 1.
Cut the backbone off the chicken.
2.
Flip it over, twist the legs/thighs out to the sides, and press down firmly on the center of the breastbone with both hands until you hear a pop. This flattens it out.

3.
Preheat your smoker to 300°F.
4.
Season liberally — all over. Get into all the nooks and crannies. I even season the undercarriage for maximum flavor.
For January, I wanted to share one
5.
Once the smoker is hot, toss the chicken in and let it do its thing.
6.
Depending on the size of your bird, cook time is typically 1.5–2 hours.
7.
When the thickest part of the breast temps at 160–165°F, pull it off the smoker.
8.
Let it rest at least 15 minutes (I usually go for 20).
9.
Slice it up — cut the thighs from the bottom, separate the legs from the thighs, then remove the breasts from the breastbone.

of my go-to recipes — something I make almost weekly at home on the smoker: spatchcock chicken. It’s simple, mostly hands-off, and feeds a decent crowd… or a small one with leftovers (which is never a bad thing).
10. Enjoy an extremely juicy, smoky chicken!

STRONG AT ANY AGE How Strength Training and Community Transform Lives photos by J O D I E B R I M C R E AT I V E

taying active isn’t just about fitness—it’s about maintaining strength, mobility, and confidence at any stage of life. Research consistently shows that strength training offers wide-ranging benefits for everyone, helping build muscle, protect bones, boost metabolism, and support mental well-being. Regular resistance exercise has been linked to improved mood, sharper cognitive function, and reduced stress, making it one of the most effective ways to maintain overall health. But exercise is about more than just the science. Motivation, accountability, and enjoyment play a huge role in long-term success. Many people find that the social side of fitness—training alongside peers, sharing achievements, and encouraging one another—can be just as transformative as the workouts themselves. Being part of a supportive community increases adherence to a routine and turns exercise into a sustainable, uplifting habit. Washington Park CrossFit has built a reputation for providing exactly that kind of environment. A common misconception is that CrossFit is only for elite athletes—but in reality, every single movement is scalable, so anyone can train safely and effectively, regardless of experience or fitness level. For those who prefer to avoid barbells or gymnastics, the gym offers “Engine Room” classes and memberships, focusing on
kettlebells, dumbbells, and machines. These classes deliver all the benefits of strength training in a safe, approachable, and results-driven format. Members also have access to optional recovery tools, including an infrared sauna and cold plunge, which can be added to a membership for those looking to elevate their wellness routine. Tailored coaching ensures proper form, gradual progression, and celebrates every milestone—helping members of all ages feel confident and capable. Washington Park CrossFit offers a one-week free trial, giving newcomers a chance to experience the workouts and the community firsthand. For ongoing inspiration and a peek inside the gym, follow @washingtonparkcrossfit on Instagram. Whether lifting a barbell, mastering a bodyweight movement, or cheering on a fellow member, strength training combined with a supportive community transforms both the body and mindset—no matter your age or experience. Location & Schedule Washington Park CrossFit is located at 2020 Hollyrood Street in Winston-Salem. Classes run Monday–Friday, 6am–6:30pm; Saturdays at 8:30am and 10am; and Sundays at 3pm. A monthly column that keeps its finger on the pulse of Forsyth’s artists and their inspiring stories!
Dean Roland Johnson | American Realism Painter This month’s featured artist, Dean Roland Johnson, explores botanical forms with precision, depth, and quiet beauty. Each of his paintings reflects a lifelong devotion to capturing nature in its purest form through a disciplined process and a continual pursuit of artistic mastery.
Please join us for the Artist Reception at the Elberson Fine Arts Center, Salem College, on January 9th from 5-7 pm.
It has taken many years to master painting. Early on I painted directly onto a canvas but eventually realized that I could achieve better results with a good drawing before applying paint. That approach has allowed me to work out any compositional challenges and create a “blueprint.” There is always more to learn about different techniques, brushes and different qualities of paint. Growing as a person and an artist is a lifelong process which I will embrace as long as I’m alive.
How would you describe your work? My work is an exploration of botanical forms, from roses to lily pads painted in the rich tradition of American Realism.
What was your journey to developing your artistic skills like?
As a college student, I hitchhiked my way around Europe for several months. I visited many museums and viewed firsthand magnificent works of old masters. It was a seminal experience that has stayed with me throughout the years. I understood then what “great art” looks like. Since then I have been committed to creating the best work I can through my experimentation with abstract expressionism and later non-objective geometric forms. Over time I found that I got the most personal satisfaction from drawing realistically, which evolved into the paintings I create today. I continue to develop my skills with line, form, and color to further enrich my work.
How have you grown, personally, as an artist? I draw inspiration from all great art, from the Renaissance to American masters like O’Keeffe, Hopper and Wyeth.
What is your secret for carving out time to truly be creative? I started out teaching art in college, but it was not a good fit for me. Then after spending many successful years in business, my life still felt incomplete. I had neglected my passion for art, so I began painting again. I now devote as much time as I can to working in my “sacred space” while listening to classical music and cool jazz to enhance the experience.
Do you have a favorite story behind one of your projects and why?
Most of my paintings have a “story,” but the one that comes to mind is that of an old Rose of Sharon, a hibiscus, that bloomed every summer outside my office at our country inn. I had just recently begun painting again and saw this proud flower swaying in the mountain air as a worthy subject. The plant was quite large and regal and warranted a large canvas of 48” × 48”. I started painting and had it well underway, but as I zoned in on its center (stamen tube) I realized that a very close inspection was necessary. I got up close and backed off; I just couldn’t focus on it. Discouraged, I put the painting aside. Not long after that I went for my annual eye exam, where my ophthalmologist said I had very cloudy cataracts and had been driving illegally. Shortly after that visit I had
my cataracts removed, got home and took another look at my Rose. I now could clearly see what was blurred before and was able to finish the painting. Problem solved!
What are you working on that excites you right now?
Our (actually Jean Marie’s) garden provides me with endless possibilities. Each flower has distinct shapes, sizes and colors that motivate me to capture their unique forms. Right now I am working on a “humble” salvia whose stems and petals create an arabesque-like form. I will return to that graceful flower once my Salem College exhibit is complete.
What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with fellow artists?
I know it’s cliché, but follow your dreams. The day before my father, a machinist, died, he asked what course I was following in school. When I told him I’d be studying art, his face dropped. I’ll never forget that moment; I expect he was hoping that I was going to say business or law. But to his great credit he then smiled and told me that he loved me and wanted me to be happy in whatever I did with my life. I did stay with art, although, ironically, a big chunk of my career was in business— forecasting colors and designs and then developing commercial textiles. None of us can predict where a life in the arts will take us, but it’s always rich and fulfilling.
If you are interested in learning more about this month’s artist, you can find their work online at www.deanrolandjohnson.com.

Recipe developed by LAUREN SEPHTON (@BRIGHTMOMENTCO)
January might be cold and windy, but the kitchen will keep you perfectly warm and cozy with all its seasonal specialties. For instance, you’ll find plenty of carrots, cabbage, celery, leeks, sweet potatoes and broccoli for your favorite soup recipes. You also find Brussels sprouts, arugula, baby spinach, parsnips, romaine lettuce, endives and cauliflower for salads or delicious side dishes. And, don’t forget about the variety of apples still in season, plus pears, oranges, persimmons,
pomegranates, lemons, limes, oranges, kiwi and grapefruit. This month, we’re indulging the variety of citrus in season by making a simple citrus garlic herb butter roasted chicken that has a crispy skin, incredible flavor and is oh so juicy! It’s perfect for make ahead family dinners, holidays or meal prep. Citrus fruits are known for being rich in vitamins and plant compounds, they’re a great source of fiber and low in calories. Studies show they may help with iron absorption, reduce cardiovascular diseases, help strengthen immune support and assist in brain health.

Timeless Elegance & Modern Grace There’s something undeniably soothing about a space that marries warmth with refinement. The soft interplay of muted tones and natural light creates a room that feels both open and intimate – a place where you can sip coffee in the morning or unwind with a book in the evening. Subtle gold accents add a touch of modern elegance without overpowering the calm, while tailored textures and soft fabrics invite comfort and conversation. It’s the kind of space that feels curated yet lived in, designed for moments that unfold slowly. At the heart of this design lies balance – between structure and softness, tradition and modernity. Architectural details frame cozy gathering areas, while thoughtful symmetry gives the eye a sense of rest. Each element, from the layered artwork to the gentle glow of lighting, works in harmony to create not just a room, but an experience. It’s proof that timeless design isn’t about following trends; it’s about crafting a space that welcomes you home every single day. Our portfolio is listed on our website, junedelugasinteriors.com, under “Design Projects.” You can see some of our projects from the past 10 years and how we specialize in giving every home a timeless and elegant look that will last for years to come. ach woman carries a story shaped by her victories, her shifts in direction, her struggles and the moments that push her to grow. Our lives don’t unfold in straight lines. Instead, they move in seasons, chapters, detours and leaps of faith. Whether we’re stepping into new roles, rediscovering ourselves or learning to trust the road ahead, one truth remains constant – it’s a journey.
This column was created with that belief at its heart. “It’s a Journey” will be a monthly space dedicated to honoring the many paths women walk, paths that are rarely identical, but often deeply connected. Each day invites us to grow, evolve and embrace where we are, even when that place feels uncertain or unfinished. In a world that often praises the destination, this column aims to celebrate the process.
Every month, we will explore a theme that reflects an important dimension of women’s personal and professional growth. From wellness to leadership, entrepreneurship to motherhood, love to legacy, these journeys are multifaceted and ever changing. Some we choose; others choose us. Some require courage, others require patience and all of them require intentionality. While each monthly topic will stand on its own, the column as a whole will reflect a larger truth – our journeys are interconnected. Growth in one area often strengthens another. Lessons learned in one season often prepare us for the next. And sometimes, what feels like a setback is actually an invitation to pause and realign. In ”It’s a Journey,” you’ll find a blend of insight, reflection and practical takeaway tools and perspectives that encourage intentional living. Some months will challenge you to set goals or re-evaluate priorities. Others may invite you to rest, breathe and celebrate progress you’ve been overlooking. The goal is not perfection but presence. Not checking boxes, but honoring purpose. Along the way, we’ll also spotlight the voices of women in our community who are navigating their own journeys with courage, authenticity and grace. Through interviews and shared stories, we will learn from their wisdom, their stumbles and their breakthroughs. Their insights make it clear that growth isn’t meant to be done alone; it’s built through shared wisdom and support.
Whether you are stepping into a new season or standing at a crossroads, whether you feel steady or stretched thin, ”It’s a Journey” will meet you where you are. So, welcome. Take a breath. Settle in. And let’s explore these journeys together, month by month, with curiosity, courage and compassion. There is power in reflection. There is beauty in becoming. And there is strength in knowing that you don’t have to have it all figured out to keep going.
After all…it’s a journey. 46 | ForsythWoman.com

New Year, Healthier You: Start 2026 Prioritizing Your Well-Being
A
new year brings fresh opportunities to reset, refocus, and put your health at the top of your priority list. At Hawthorne Obstetrics and Gynecology in Winston-Salem, the care team believes that preventive care and healthy habits are the foundation for long-term wellness. This January, take charge of your health with these simple yet impactful tips.
PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH
The best gift you can give yourself is consistent care. Whether it’s scheduling your annual well-woman exam or staying on top of preventive screenings, making your health a priority today can help prevent bigger issues tomorrow.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE • Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days a week. Exercise improves cardiovascular health, boosts mood, and supports healthy weight management. • Eat a heart-healthy diet: Focus on whole, nourishing foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Limit red meat and dairy for better heart health and energy. • Get quality sleep: Adults need 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Adequate rest helps regulate blood pressure, supports healthy cholesterol levels, and reduces stress.
KEEP UP WITH PREVENTIVE SCREENINGS
START THE YEAR WITH SUPPORT
MANAGE STRESS WISELY
This year, make yourself a priority. A healthier, happier you begins with the choices you make today.
Preventive screenings are vital to catch potential health concerns early. Your provider at Hawthorne Obstetrics and Gynecology can help determine which screenings are right for you. Based on your age and family history, your provider may discuss cervical cancer screenings, mammograms, bone density screenings, and colorectal cancer screenings. Stress is a part of life, but too much of it can take a toll on your body and mind. Explore healthy ways to manage stress such as yoga, meditation, physical activity, or quality time with friends and family.
LIMIT ALCOHOL AND AVOID SMOKING

family ourselves which affects how we deal with others. We meet people where they are, no matter the circumstances, and we want them to feel their voices are heard when they come to Mountain Valley.”
“Our hearts are in everything we do,” shares Tracey Dobson, President and CEO for the past seven years. “We feel like a

a way of life that begins with dispelling the misconception that hospice is simply a place to die. “Patients who have more than six months to live can also receive treatment here to ease their symptoms. Examples of those chronic illnesses include heart disease, cancer and COPD. Even dementia patients can receive help with symptoms that often include agitation,” explains Tracey. Palliative care can be received at any stage of a serious illness, including while pursuing curative treatment, while hospice care is specifically for those with a terminal illness with six months or less to live – and who have stopped seeking treatment.
THE MOUNTAIN VALLEY DIFFERENCE
Two vital programs that set Mountain Valley apart are Love’s PEAK (Providing Empathy and Assurance for Kids) and their Convalescent Transport Vehicle services. Love’s PEAK is a program dedicated to pediatric hospice and palliative care – where children typically have a life-limiting prognosis. Anyone can make a referral to the program, and Mountain Valley works closely with primary care providers to meet care goals. Those goals, always directed by family, can be continued aggressive treatments, comfort care only or something in between. “Our Love’s PEAK program cares for children and families facing the challenges of coping with a serious illness or condition,” explains Tracey, who began her career at Brenner Children’s Hospital and knows the level of heart and compassion necessary to nurture young patients. “Ages range from infancy to 21 years, and our multidisciplinary pediatric team offers physical, emotional and spiritual care with the goal of enhancing the quality of life for children, teens and their families as they cope with a potentially life-limiting illness or condition.”
Mountain Valley also provides grief support for children through an annual Grief Camp. Free of charge and open to children in grades K-8 who’ve experienced loss in the past two years, Grief Camp activities include pet therapy, drum circle and music, art therapy, self-care focus, yoga, journaling, lots of engaging fun and a remembrance walk and butterfly release that’s a family inclusive tribute. While committed to providing care to people of all ages, Mountain Valley is one of only a few hospice and palliative care organizations that provide a specialized program of care for seriously ill children. Chief Clinical Operations Officer Jenna Campbell, who has been part of the Mountain Valley family for 10 years, also notes that just like adults and geriatric patients, pediatric patients are also treated holistically – focusing on mind, body and spirit. “When we learn of a child with a serious illness, our hearts break right along with the child’s family and community,” adds Tracey. “It’s in these difficult times when we bring comprehensive care and support with our specially trained team. There is deep sadness but also hope and beauty found in caring for children, and we honor that sacred place. In everything we do here, and particularly when it comes to children, we are servants to the patient and also the family and surrounding community.” Also unique to Mountain Valley is their Convalescent Transport Vehicle. “Having our own transport vehicle means we can provide safe, timely and compassionate transportation for patients who need to move between care settings (from the hospital to one of our inpatient care centers, for example),” explains Jenna. “It reduces delays in transitions of care, ensures patients are transported by professionals who understand their unique needs, relieves the burden on our community’s emergency services teams, who are often stretched thin and offers a gentler, more personalized experience for families during emotional moments.” What also allows Mountain Valley to care for every patient, regardless of their ability to pay, are strong philanthropy efforts. “It fills the gap where insurance ends, allowing us to never turn anyone away! Philanthropy is not an ‘extra’ – it’s an essential. It allows us to keep services local, personal and mission-focused.” shares Leigh Anne
or in-home companionship often aren’t funded. Donor support allows for whole-person, whole-family care. Chief Financial Officer Barry Dowell has been with Mountain Valley more than nine years and is dedicated to managing “mission and margin” – essential to making the most of Mountain Valley’s resources. “Being a nonprofit in rural markets can be a challenge, but we work hard financially to give the very best care possible,” he shares, adding that philanthropy also sustains Love’s PEAK, veteran’s projects and Alzheimer’s support – programs that profoundly affect the community. Donor support also sustains Mountain Valley’s two hospice homes, including the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home – a 22,000-squarefoot facility – located at 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC, and the SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin – a 10,000-square-foot facility located at 243 North Lee Avenue, Yadkinville, NC. Groves, Senior VP of Philanthropy. “We commit to guiding our patients and family members through the end-of-life journey with compassion, support and respect. This is our calling.” While Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers cover core hospice services, critical support like bereavement counseling, spiritual care
With an unmistakable emotional bond among the entire Mountain Valley team – it’s with the most heartfelt efforts that patients come first here – and always with comfort, dignity and peace. SIX Benefits of Launching a Podcast
More Than a Mic: The Surprising Ways Podcasting Changes Everything
by S U Z Y F I E L D E R S
Do you own a business? Are you a mom? Do you like telling stories or talking with others about their stories? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, you should consider starting a podcast. While it might seem farfetched upon initial thought, the reality is that podcasts provide numerous benefits for their hosts. When I started Twin City Talk, a local podcast devoted to sharing stories of those who work, play, live and visit Winston-Salem in October of 2024, it was more of a passion project. It’s grown and been incredibly beneficial in so many ways, many I never would have thought. As I write this, we’ve published 55 episodes, so I wanted to share with others the benefits of starting a podcast. Whether you have already been pondering the thought or, like me, it wasn’t even something you considered until someone brought it up, here’s your sign to launch your own podcast!
TURN THOUGHTS INTO IMPACT
The biggest benefit of starting a podcast is that it gives you a voice. It’s a way to share your story or help others share their stories if it’s interview-style. There will always be people with whom your stories resonate.
PURE FUN BEHIND THE MIC
One unexpected benefit I found was that it brings me so much joy. Every recording session is fun and something I truly enjoy. I always walk away in a good mood!
ENDLESS CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES
The creative potential is unlimited with podcasts. There are so many topics and guests that the possibilities are virtually endless. It’s very unlikely you won’t have content to cover once you define your podcast and begin recording.
MARKETING TOOL WITH MASSIVE REACH
In 2025, more than 584 million people listened to podcasts around the world. Experts expect that number to go to more than 600 million in 2026. Right here in the US, 55% of people (age 12 and up) listened to podcasts monthly in 2025. Those are huge numbers! Meaning, it’s a great marketing tool that isn’t going anywhere.
CONFIDENCE YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED
Another unexpected benefit was that it helped boost my confidence. I wasn’t necessarily lacking confidence prior to launching the podcast, so at the time, I really didn’t think it was something I needed. However, after launching Twin City Talk, I’ve found time and time again it is a great confidence boost.
RELATIONSHIPS THAT GO BEYOND THE STUDIO
Unless you do your podcast completely solo which I wouldn’t really recommend, it’s an amazing way to meet people and build relationships. For me, I’ve gained two wonderful friendships with my producer Tim Beeman of Such-N-Such Media and co-host Burgess Jenkins. Furthermore, I’ve met so many amazing people we’ve had as guests.

Aging Out Newfound Respect
by A
I used to think 20-somethings complaining about not being taken seriously at work or by others due to their young age was all talk. I assumed that their perceived lack of respect was a result of their own behaviors or choices and that their argument of ageism was somewhat overblown. While I still feel that way to some degree, as we all have control over how we show up professionally and how much effort we put forth into working hard to prove ourselves in a professional environment, I have discovered that many intangibles I have acquired as I have entered my early-to-mid 30s have unintentionally commanded slightly more respect from others in the workplace that I never expected. If you work multiple jobs throughout your young adulthood, it is no secret that hard work pays off in more ways than just financially. You learn to become flexible, a team player, anticipate needs and have more overall grit and resilience than someone new to the working world. With age, your priorities become less about having fun and workplace gossip, which can often trip up 20-somethings (myself included). At 22, I thought it was cute to giggle with coworkers in front of customers and made excuses for my fluctuating professionalism based on my age and inexperience. Now, at 33, I understand

MY HILL
that the last thing a busy manager or hungry customers want to see is a group of young employees standing around chatting while work can be done. When I mention intangibles, of course work ethic is included; however, there are non-work-related skills and information I have gained that have helped me relate more easily to older and more established colleagues than someone freshly out of college. With more life experience, I’ve seen more places, improved conversational skills and gained perspective and wisdom to aid in carrying on conversations with people of all age groups and demographics that 24-year-old Amy would have been ill-equipped to carry. I’ve also learned through painful experiences how to set up stronger boundaries emotionally and socially in professional settings to ensure that I more aptly compartmentalize work and personal relationships. It was a harsh wake-up call when I was forced to come to the realization that most people in a professional setting are there to work and that workplace relationships I assumed were mutually deep or emotionally significant were often not as deep or significant to the other person. Although a painful lesson to learn, it is imperative to guard your heart and understand that your coworkers’ finances will (more often than not) trump any workplace friendships when the chips are down.
Although it’s tempting to gossip about your coworkers in most workplaces, my perspective on engaging in constant whining about work conditions has changed since my early-to-mid 20s. With time and experience, I realized that complaining and poisoning the well usually only spreads negativity and allows resentment to fester, which damages the social environment at work and can often backfire. My personal advice? If you are working in an environment where you feel the need to vent or complain that often to others, the likelihood of that environment suddenly changing from your complaints or feedback is slim and it is best to seek employment elsewhere for your mental health and for the mental health of your colleagues. Confidence is something I never imagined I would gain, as I can be the queen of self doubt and social anxiety, but when I find myself no longer feeling incompetent or like an imposter in meetings or social events at work, or when I stop feeling the need to run everything by my supervisor before making a decision, I am surprised at my own growth. In turn, others sense my confidence and feel more comfortable relying on me or confiding in me about their own workplace struggles. While growing older and aging has its psychological downfalls and physical consequences, a few more smile lines are worth feeling a bit more revered among workplace peers.

Keeping Your Business Top-of-Mind in a Fast-Paced World by M A R T I E E M O R Y

hile immersing himself in photography and videography with his company, Dark Water Creatives, Spencer Douglas tapped into an even stronger passion – collaborating with local businesses and forming The Content Club. “Over the last few years, the way businesses communicate with their audience has changed dramatically,” he shares. “Long form brand films and full scale productions still have their place, but most small businesses need something different to stay visible today – consistent, authentic, high quality content that shows who they are day to day.” His initiative means small businesses can show up, adapt quickly and stand out, despite all the other noise! “We live in an attention-scarce world where audiences are inundated from every direction,” he explains. “One great video simply isn’t enough to stay visible. Businesses need ongoing support – consistent, high quality content that keeps them top of mind and genuinely connected with their customers.” It’s no secret that social media isn’t simply a “nice option” these days – it’s one of the top tools small businesses rely on to reach customers. Approximately 96% of small businesses in the United States include social media in their marketing strategy, and about 77% use social platforms to support key business functions from marketing and sales to customer service. Nearly 41% of local businesses depend on social media to directly drive their revenue. “Small business owners don’t always have the time or resources to create fresh content that truly represents them,“ shares Spencer. “In addition to offering full scale video production and photography, I launched this new service to equip them with quality video and photo content on a regular basis.” If you’re a small business owner, you already know you should be posting more and are reminded of it every time you scroll (continued on page 62)

social media. But, between running a business, serving customers, managing operations and wearing a dozen different hats, content creation usually falls to the bottom of the to-do list. Spencer also stresses the importance of strategy, as he explains a few copy-and-paste posts or trendy viral videos won’t move the needle. Copying trends often does more harm than good, as it blends your business into a sea of sameness and rarely communicates anything meaningful. Trends can be fun, but don’t build long term connections. Focusing on authenticity, clarity and purpose, Dark Water Creatives helps businesses show up as well as show off what makes them different. The Content Club is a flexible, scalable retainer designed to give businesses continual access to fresh, strategic video and photo content. It’s fully customized and built around the goals and platforms of each business. “Every partnership begins with understanding,” shares Spencer. “I get to know your business, your audience, your goals and your

challenges. From there, we build a personalized plan that outlines what content you need, how often you need it, where it will live and how it supports your long term goals.” Most Content Club sessions are video-focused, but photography is included for clients who need it. Many businesses benefit from a mix of both, and that’s the beauty of the program – you get exactly what you need and nothing you don’t. From planning to production to editing, Dark Water Creatives handles everything, so you always have a steady pipeline of high quality content. “This is not social media management – I always like to make that clear,” Spencer adds. “We create all the photo and video assets you need – start to finish – so social media posts or website updates take mere minutes of your time instead of hours or even days.” To collaborate with Dark Water Creatives and enhance your own small business, learn about their services at darkwatercreatives.com, email info@darkwatercreatives.com or call 336.462.8789. Hustle & Heart by TA R Y N J E R E Z , OF GOFORITCREATIVE.COM
This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.
3 STEPS TO RESET YOUR MINDSET FOR 2026 YOUR WAY You don’t need a cheat sheet for quick wins that aren’t getting you sustainable success. You need a compass for a more intentional year that leads you right where you want to be. Let’s dive into what you really need and want in your business this year, instead of being pressured by whatever is popping up in your Instagram feed. It’s time for a mindset reset!
THIS YEAR, BUSINESS LOOKS HOWEVER YOU WANT IT The start of the year can add so much pressure with the “new year, new you” messaging, but what if we leaned into a different side of this overused mantra? Your business starts with your brain, so think about what you need to feel clear, aligned and grounded in what you’re working towards in 2026. It’s time to take a quick pause to explore what business could look like on your own terms.
Your Definition of 1 Rewrite Success We’re putting pen to paper! Write this down – “What would success look like in 2026?” In the words of the Spice Girls, “tell me what you want, what you really really want.” Is it launching something you can’t stop thinking about? More time traveling with family? Less client work? Meaningful rest? The answers to these questions are going to be that north star guiding you every step of the way.
64 | ForsythWoman.com
2 Embracing Your Unique Rhythm The pressure to keep up is downright ruthless in this day and age – especially as business owners. Your mission this year is to block out the noise of shiny launches, sexy metrics and all the highlight reels of other people. Comparison makes us feel so behind even when we’re not even close to it! Keep your eyes on your own to-do list concentrating on what feels aligned, what’s bringing in the type of sales you desire and what makes you feel successful. This is giving you permission to run your business – and your life – the way you want to.
to Your “Why” – 3 Stick Not Your Goals You might feel a little resistance here, but focusing only on your goals is actually a great way to not get to your version of success. It’s completely natural for your goals to shift and evolve as the months go on, but your “why” is what stays consistent. Reconnect with your “why” by remembering why you started doing this to begin with, who you feel called to serve and what the purpose is you feel called to fulfill with your business? Whenever overwhelm and frustration start creeping in, check in with your “why” to see
if you’re still on the right track or somehow wandered a bit too far off course. It’s Not About The Hustle. It’s About the Heart. Beautiful branding, trendy marketing, fancy offers – all of these are great but don’t mean anything if your foundation is already shaky from the start of the year. Remember that when you align your inner values, your voice and your business vision, your business isn’t just surviving but thriving. Don’t allow your vision for success to be clouded by what everyone else is doing. The heart you have for what you do and who you serve is what will lead you this year towards success. Hustle & Heart Challenge This month, take 15 minutes to write down your 2026 definition of success! Next, pick one small boundary or value you know will help get you there and block that time in your calendar or share it with an accountability friend.

THE SWEDISH ART OF DEATH CLEANING: A Surprisingly Liberating Reset for the New Year by J A N E B U R N E T T E
healthcoachjane.com IG @coachjanebb FB @coachjanebb January arrives with fresh goals, renewed energy, and—let’s be honest—more stuff than any of us planned for. Holiday décor that didn’t make it back into the right bins, gifts without a real home, kitchen gadgets you forgot you owned, and keepsakes that multiplied overnight. It’s normal. And fixable. Instead of fighting the overwhelm, consider a surprisingly comforting Scandinavian tradition: the Swedish art of death cleaning. Despite its dramatic name, “döstädning” isn’t about anything morbid. It’s about clearing the excess so you can live more freely right now. It’s thoughtful, empowering, and incredibly doable— because it’s meant to be slow. A few minutes here, a small space there. No perfection required. Here’s how to put this gentle, practical method to work in your home as you step into 2026 with more clarity and less clutter.
START WITH WHAT’S EASIEST
Skip the sentimental category for now. You need momentum, not emotional wrestling. Begin with items that carry zero attachment: • Expired spices • Stretched-out workout bands • Mismatched food-storage lids • Winter hats no one uses • Duplicate water bottles These quick wins create confidence for deeper decluttering later.
USE THE “LOVE, USE, OR LEAVE” RULE
Choose a category—coats, mugs, skincare, holiday décor—and physically touch each item. Ask yourself: Do I love this? Do I use this? Has it earned space in my home? If the answer is no, it’s hidden clutter. Release it guilt-free.
66 | ForsythWoman.com
REPLACE BULKY KEEPSAKES WITH PHOTOS
This is one of the most powerful shifts. Instead of keeping every: • Dance recital program • Participation trophy • School craft • Birthday card • Team T-shirt Take a photo and add it to a digital “Family Memories” album. You keep the memory without the bins—or the guilt your kids will eventually feel when deciding whether to keep them.
CREATE THREE SIMPLE SORTING PILES No fancy containers needed—just: 1. Keep & Use 2. Give Away or Donate 3. Not Sure Yet
That third pile is your secret weapon. It removes the pressure to make the “right” decision immediately. Revisit it monthly. Clarity grows with distance.
IDENTIFY THE HIDDEN CLUTTER ZONES Most homes have a few repeat offenders: • The bathroom drawer filled with half-used products • The guest room closet • The basket by the back door • The random cords bin (everyone has one) • Kitchen gadgets bought with great intentions Set a timer for 10–20 minutes and stop when it goes off. This keeps the process gentle—not draining.
APPLY THE ONE-IN, ONE-OUT PRINCIPLE After the holidays, this rule is a lifesaver: • New robe? Let an old one go. • New candle? Finish or discard a half-burned one. • New kids’ toys? Donate what they’ve outgrown. It keeps your home feeling balanced instead of slowly expanding with every new item.
GIVE YOUR FUTURE SELF (AND FAMILY) A GIFT
One thoughtful element of death cleaning is considering the people who might someday sort through your belongings. But rather than feeling heavy, it’s actually a generous act. You’re choosing what matters now. You’re reducing the burden later. You’re creating space for the life you want to live today. It’s caring in every direction.
STORE SENTIMENTAL ITEMS WITH PURPOSE
What you choose to keep deserves intention: • Create a slim memory box for each child • Use a decorative tray to display heirlooms • Keep handwritten letters in one, curated folder • Label bins clearly so nothing becomes “mystery clutter” Honoring keepsakes is part of the ritual— not an afterthought.
END EACH SESSION WHILE YOU STILL HAVE ENERGY
This small habit changes everything. Stop before you’re tired. You’ll feel accomplished instead of overwhelmed and far more likely to return the next day.
A GENTLE RESET FOR 2026
The Swedish art of death cleaning isn’t about endings—it’s about living with more lightness and intention. It’s a caring, guilt-free, indulgent way to release what weighs you down and make room for what supports your well-being. No marathons. No pressure. Just one drawer, one pile, one honest moment at a time. That’s how a home becomes a place that truly supports you.

Women Wild in the
by A M Y H I L L
Wildcats You're Most Likely to Encounter in the U.S. As the proud owner of a fluffy Maine Coon and a lover of hiking and all things nature, I have a soft spot for any kind of cat – even dangerous wildcats in nature throughout the United States. I’ve never been fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a cougar on any of my hikes, but I have yet to give up hope. Here are a few feral felines to keep your eyes peeled for on trails throughout the country.
MOUNTAIN LIONS
Although elusive and unlikely to be seen while hiking, mountain lions roam around the western United States in popular national parks and commonly hiked areas. Also referred to as cougars or pumas, mountain lions are most commonly seen in states like California and Colorado, as rugged mountains, canyons and forests provide ideal conditions for these big cats to hunt and raise offspring. As carnivores, mountain lions primarily prey on elk or deer, wild pigs, rabbits, bighorn sheep and other small mammals and birds. In fact, according to multiple sites on the internet, it is reported that mountain lions eat between eight to 10 pounds of meat per day. What makes mountain lions a bit eerie is their ambush strategy when it comes to hunting prey. They often stalk their prey and remain hidden many feet behind their prey until the time is right to strike – making a mountain lion attack difficult to see coming.
68 | ForsythWoman.com
Although mountain lions usually keep their distance from humans, there have been many news reports of hikers or bikers being stalked on trails in California and Colorado by mountain lions, sometimes curious juvenile mountain lions, that give the passersby a good scare and a viral video with which to walk away. In fact, in November of last year, bikers filmed their terrifying encounter with a mountain lion on a trail in southern California (ksl.com/ article/51404608/have-you-seen-thismountain-lion-stalks-bikers-on-californiatrail). Fortunately for the mountain bikers, they remained calm and assertive, shouting and not cowering in order to stand their ground as the mountain lion followed them for minutes before retreating.
FLORIDA PANTHERS
Part of the mountain lion family, Florida panthers roam around South Florida in areas like the Everglades. Classified as endangered species, there are only an estimated 120 to 230 panthers in the state of Florida, as reported by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Swamp forests and pinelands are their habitat of choice, and a visitor’s best chance of catching a rare glimpse of a panther is by taking a trip to Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park or Collier-Seminole State Park.
BOBCATS
Smaller than mountain lions and panthers, bobcats are widespread throughout the United States, inhabiting almost every state but Delaware. Their versatility in habitat means they can be found in North Carolina forests, river valleys in Texas, deserts in Arizona or swamps in Florida. It is estimated that there are between one and two million bobcats throughout the United States, but your chances of seeing one in the wild is still quite rare, considering their shy nature. With shorter tails than mountain lions and panthers, they are considered mediumsized cats and are most active in early morning hours or dusk. North Carolina alone is home to approximately 125,000 bobcats, with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park having a higher population than other areas throughout the state. In July of 2025, a bobcat was captured on a home security camera in Asheville, NC at around 5:00 a.m. as it prowled through the homeowner’s backyard. Sadly, according to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park website, rangers still insist that a bobcat sighting in the park is unlikely as this breed of wildcat remains stealthy.

SAM WHITE Sam White is the owner of Guidance Grove Research – a blend of art and science at its heart. “My first passion was flavor chemistry,” said Sam. “In high school, I became fascinated by how food worked, which led me to major in food science with a simple goal – create healthier food that actually tasted good. But, what truly hooked me wasn’t just the chemistry; it was listening to people and understanding their stories, preferences and the deeper ‘why’ behind their choices. That curiosity eventually pulled me into market research. Guidance Grove began almost accidentally, when a colleague asked me to run surveys and analytics for a personal project. Word spread, and soon, I was supporting more founders and teams than my 9–5 could hold. Many were turned away by large firms for being “too small,” but I saw something different – a real need for enterprise-level insight without enterprise-level barriers. Today, I lead Guidance Grove using the A.I.M. Framework™ -- a repeatable approach proven to get businesses 50% more revenue and 30% faster lead conversions. My mission is straightforward – close the gap between insight and action, so businesses can move forward with clarity and confidence. Outside of work, I’m part of a lively household of six (plus a cat and a dog). I’m a sci-fi reader, a singer and an unapologetic nerd. Think of me as your superhero-loving strategist – turning curiosity into clarity and insight into momentum.

Winter Blues? How to Travel Cheaply by I S A B E L L A C A S T I N E Y R A
We’re all feeling it – the sun feels like it’s setting as we leave work. The cold feels endless. It’s been ages since a warm day.
Her content is engaging, funny and inclusive to people traveling with families and those who can jet off at any moment alike. If you want to keep an eye on some travel options without your inbox being flooded with Google flight alerts, @ WellTraveledChild is the perfect way to start.
A vacation sounds like the perfect fix, but we’re often scared away by the price tag – and the hassle – that comes with it. A vacation may be easier and less daunting than you DON’T FEAR, BUDGET IS HERE! think if you use some great tools available to I know that people often pledge loyalty to one us in North Carolina. airline, and this can be a great call for points, but if you’re looking for a nonstop flight for a weekend, budget might be your new best @WELLTRAVELEDCHILD ON friend. Most Douglas Airport (CLT) offers a whopping 188 of the flights she promotes are from RDU, but nonstop destinations, including budget airlines she does throw in some CLT options, as well. Spirit, Avelo and Frontier.

With budget airlines comes caveats. The seats are often tight and a carry-on bag might not be included. Budget airlines only offer a few flights per week, so it offers less flexibility with changing days and times.
DON’T FORGET GSO!
North Carolina is lucky to have RDU and CLT, two large and convenient airports within two hours of Forsyth County. Don’t forget, however, about Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO)! It is the closest airport to Forsyth County and still completes more than 240 flights a day. My experiences with small airports, including GSO, have been very positive. Security is quick and efficient. Although there are fewer dining options and an abundance of destinations like RDU and CLT, GSO is a great option, as well. I have found that there are some domestic direct destinations (Chicago and Atlanta, in particular) that are much more affordable and direct than anything offered out of RDU and CLT.

Purpose Push: Letting God Write the Next 12 Chapters Happy New Year, my friend! You made it. Another year, another set of 12 chapters waiting to be lived, written and revealed. Before you rush into planning, strategizing and filling your calendar with tasks and goals, I invite you to adopt a new kind of New Year posture; one where you allow God to be the author, not just the editor, of your business journey. If you’re like me, January brings a mix of excitement, pressure and self-imposed expectations. I always think about the grand goal at the end and then have a habit of stressing myself out to build a roadmap for everything in the year to go perfectly. God always reminds me, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails,” (Proverbs 19:21). Over the years, I’ve gotten better at releasing control to allow God to do what He does best – protect me from harm unseen and blow my mind with His supernatural abilities. This year, instead of handing God your plans like a permission slip, give Him the pen and let Him lead the narrative.
RELEASE THE PLAN
I know you love a good plan. Vision boards, color-coded goals, yearly projections, new systems and the like. Planning is biblical, but pressure isn’t, so before you finalize your Q1 goals, spend time surrendering every part of your business to God. Ask yourself: •
God, what do You want my business to accomplish this year?
•
Who do You want me to serve?
•
What needs to change in me before anything changes around me?

by S H E R I D A N C . W AT K I N S
When God is the foundation of your planning, you start the year with peace instead of panic or pressure.
SET GOD-LED GOALS, NOT EGO-LED GOALS
Let me be the first to tell you to dream big! God is the One who put vision inside of you, but your goals are meant to align with His purpose, not the world’s definition of success. A Godled goal feels peaceful, even if it’s challenging. An ego-led goal feels heavy, stressful and complicated. If your intentions glorify God, draw you closer to Him and build His Kingdom, you’re on the right track. We’re not in business to glamourize our productivity or exalt our efforts to prove ourselves to man. Don’t let ego slip in. The right goals don’t just grow your business, they grow you.
LEAVE ROOM FOR DIVINE DISRUPTION
We love control, but God loves transformation. And, sorry to say, transformation rarely comes through predictable, comfortable routines. This year, stay open to divine pivots, sudden redirections and opportunities that weren’t on your radar. Some of the most powerful breakthroughs in business come from unexpected doors God opens when we stay flexible. Your job is obedience. God’s job is outcomes. Don’t mix up the responsibilities.
TEND TO YOUR SPIRIT
A business is only as healthy as the leader behind it. Don’t forget to nourish your spirit along the way by making space for replenishing rituals like quiet reflections,
prayer, scripture-led planning sessions, sabbaths without guilt and whatever brings you inner healing. You cannot do Kingdom work with an empty cup. God’s voice becomes clearest when your soul is rested and receptive.
TRUST GOD WITH THE CHAPTERS YOU CAN’T SEE YET Just like a good book, you won’t know every plot twist or challenge ahead. Some chapters will be joyful. Some may stretch you. Others may feel like nothing is happening at all. But, God wastes nothing. There’s no season, setback or delay God won’t use for His glory and your best interest. Your calling was beautifully written long before your calendar was created. So, let God be the author of the next 12 chapters of 2026 because He truly tells the best stories. I have faith in you.

Trying New Things: sprinting by I S A B E L L A C A S T I N E Y R A
Welcome back to another Trying New Things! This month, we are speeding up with sprinting. Sprinting is running as fast as you can for a short amount of time. A few months ago, I joined a recreational softball league and wrote about my great experience with it in Trying New Things. Softball actually inspired me to write this article because I found it more difficult than I anticipated to run from home plate to first base. I was often sore after games because I am not used to exerting too much speed. When I do run, it’s mostly for completion of a distance more than it is for time.
WHAT IS IT?
Sprinting is a sport that jumps up from a level of recreation all the way up to the Olympics. In track and field, there is a 100-, 200- and 400-meter race. Four hundred meters is one lap around a standard track, 200 is half of a lap and 100 is a quarter of a lap. The 400-meter long sprint is considered by some to be the most difficult track distance because of how long the run is at full speed. When I first started this article, I thought it would be a much easier endeavor – it doesn’t sound super difficult to run for less than a
76 | ForsythWoman.com
minute. In reality, sprinting is a huge challenge and a great way to build muscle mass since it requires so much muscle use and exerts so much energy. It’s also a great way to improve endurance and prevent heart disease.
BEGINNER FRIENDLY?
One huge benefit of sprinting, and what I mentioned in my previous articles on walking and running, is that it is extremely accessible. There’s no special equipment; it’s free and, as long as you can find a safe area, it can be done. Sprinting does not come without its risks. It’s an easy way to pull an achilles tendon or strain a calf without proper stretching and training. Building up to a full sprint is likely a better course of action to avoid any sort of injury. Additionally, it may also not be wise to run on a track when first starting as it could lead to further injuries. Maybe try grass, a path or pavement and work up to the track.
DID I FEEL LIKE I WAS WORKING OUT? For my sprinting workout, I decided to sprint for 30 seconds, then walk for a few minutes. The first 30 seconds went alright, but after a few tries, I realized I had to bring down my
sprinting time to 20 and then 10 seconds. I also dropped down from 100% effort to around 80% after the first few sprints. I overwhelmingly felt like I was working out. I expected that this would be more challenging than anticipated after playing softball, but it still surprised me that I struggled to even run at 100% effort after the first sprint. Sprinting is a fast way to build muscle and see some stark improvements in a short amount of time. It doesn’t come without its risks – without proper preparation, it is an easy way to find yourself injured. If you work up to faster sprints, it is a quicker way to build muscle and endurance than jogging. For a faster workout, sprinting is excellent. In just 10 or 20 minutes of sprinting and resting in between, it’s almost guaranteed to feel sore the next day. If this piques your interest, I highly recommend The Fastest Way to Boost Your Fitness, a New York Times article by Michael Venutolo-Mantovani, a journalist out of Chapel Hill. He does exceptional research into sprinting, and it may help you decide if it is right for you!

Conversation with Your BFF “Can Friendship Survive Political Differences?” by R E B E C C A C O O P E R
BOUNDARIES PROTECT FRIENDSHIPS
Some friends enjoy spirited debates. They can go back and forth for hours and then shake it off and get a pizza. Others? Not so much. If political talk feels like a fast track to frustration, set boundaries. You might agree to keep certain topics off the table or say, “this conversation is getting a little heated; let’s move on.” Boundaries aren’t about avoidance, they’re about protecting what you treasure most – your friendship.
THE POWER OF LISTENING
Listening is a lost art, especially in politics. Too often, we listen to reply, not to understand. But, what if, instead, you approach your friend’s perspective with curiosity? Ask them why they feel the way they do. Often, personal stories or life experiences shape opinions far more than headlines do. Listening doesn’t mean you agree, but it does show your friend that you value their voice, even when you don’t share it.
CELEBRATE WHAT YOU SHARE
It’s easy to let differences take center stage. But, healthy friendships thrive on common ground. Maybe you both adore the same Netflix series, share a love of working out or laugh endlessly at inside jokes no one else gets. Maybe you’ve walked through life’s hardest seasons together. Those bonds matter more than disagreements… focus on what connects you instead of magnifying what divides you.
KNOW WHEN TO PAUSE It seems for the past several years, politics has a way of seeping into every corner of our lives. It pops up in newsfeeds, family dinners and even casual conversations at the coffee shop or in texts between you and your BFF. This recently happened to me, and I wasn’t sure how to navigate my way through the maze of two strong women of different viewpoints, each believing we are right. So, can a friendship survive when you’re on opposite sides of the political aisle or issue? I’m so glad you asked, but the short answer is “yes,” but it requires respect, patience and a clear understanding of what truly matters in your relationship.
REMEMBER WHY YOU ARE FRIENDS
Think about how your friendship began. Was it shared classes, a business trip, work project, kids on the same soccer team or a random chat? Chances are, politics wasn’t what drew you together. Friendships are built on shared experiences, laughter and support during life’s highs and lows. When disagreements threaten to overshadow all of that, it helps to pause and remind yourself of the bigger picture – your friendship is more than a ballot box.
RESPECT OVER CONVINCING
Here’s a secret – most of us aren’t going to change our friend’s political views, no matter how persuasive we think we are. The goal isn’t to convince but to respect. Respect sounds like this: “I see we disagree, but I value our friendship more than this argument.” It doesn’t mean you suddenly agree with their perspective; it means you’ve chosen to prioritize the person over the position.

Of course, not every friendship can weather deep political divides. If conversations leave you feeling disrespected, unheard or consistently angry, it may be time to step back. A pause doesn’t mean the friendship is over. Sometimes space allows emotions to cool and perspective to return. True friendships can endure silence and distance – they bend without breaking.
CHOOSING THE HEART OF FRIENDSHIP
At the end of the day, politics is only one piece of a person’s identity. Your BFF isn’t just their vote or their opinion. They are the one who shows up when you’re sick, cheers when you succeed and laughs with you until your stomach hurts. If you can honor each other’s humanity above your differences, your friendship can absolutely survive and even grow stronger. Because, in the end, being there for each other matters more than being on the same side of every issue.
